Self-Care Advice for Living in California

Whether you have lived in California all your life, or have recently moved, there may be a number of things that you love about the state. However, at times, it is normal to feel despondent, especially if local or national news, or even your own personal problems, get you down. There are a number of ways that you can take better care of yourself while making the most of what California has to offer. In doing so, you could really boost your overall wellbeing and even fall in love with your state all over again.

Cutting down on going out can be a great way of making yourself feel that bit more financially secure, and could even help to reduce some of the strain on your family. Rather than attempting to take on more work, or even a second job, to get by, you could consider your current bills and figure out which could benefit from a significant change.

Switching to pay-per-mile insurance in California can be one way to make a big difference in your household. This can reduce the amount you pay for your insurance premium simply by using telematics to figure out how much driving you actually do. Many traditional policies could simply set out a blanket price for a number of miles which, more often than not, you may have estimated greater than you actually do. Saving tens, if not hundreds, of dollars on your car insurance could cause less stress, meaning you may feel better within yourself, and even have fewer problems sleeping.

Another form of self-care that you could certainly undertake while living in The Golden State can be to get plenty of fresh air and exercise. While there are a number of gyms and leisure facilities throughout the state, sometimes it can be a good idea to venture into the great outdoors. California has many areas of natural beauty that can be perfect for hiking. You could opt to find some inner peace on a waterfall trail, ground yourself next to the mighty Redwood trees, or even take an amble with your family along some of the gorgeous coves and beaches. Getting yourself outside, and engaging in physical activity, could help your body to release endorphins, which can make you feel a lot happier.

It is quite well-known that California can be a hotspot for celebrities to live in. This does not, however, mean that you need to keep up with all the fashions and trends. It can be difficult to see others having luxuries, especially if you live or work in a city that is known for excess, or people having a lot of money. Attempting to mirror their lifestyle choices could make you feel low, or even cause you severe financial strain. Opting to reduce how much you follow celebrity culture, and finding ways to feel more confident with who you are, could allow you to still appreciate living in a star-studded environment, without the need to feel self-conscious.

Practicing self-care can help you to feel better about yourself. This could involve considering your finances, but also making the most of the sights and attractions that California has to offer.

Qualities of the Best Workday Implementation Partners

0

It’s likely you’ve at least heard of Workday. And if you’re looking for a Workday implementation partner, you probably already have some idea of its capabilities. But how should you know which Workday implementation partner is right for your organization? Here are some of the qualities of the best Workday implementation partners.

What Is Workday?

Workday offers several compelling enterprise cloud-based applications—focused mainly on financial, human resources, and lifecycle management. These are some of the most useful tools in the whole world of enterprise software. There are several reasons why Workday is such a workhorse when it comes to administrative duties:

  • With everything under one roof, Workday allows for comprehensive management of the departments that drive your organization—all while collecting data for analysis and realizing greater efficiencies.
  • Being a cloud-based service provider, Workday’s suite of applications comes in at a lower price point than many of its competitors’ offerings. Without having to invest in upfront infrastructure and IT spend, Workday can deliver more immediate return.
  • Workday is a software provider you can trust. Management has a long history of delivering top-level products and results. Furthermore, Workday is used by the largest enterprises in the world because it’s able to pass the most stringent of security audits.
  • There are some applications that don’t change with the times. Workday isn’t one of them. The ability to always be striving for more, and continuously improving, are two of the defining characteristics of Workday.

Clearly, there are benefits to adopting Workday. But how is your organization going to extract the most value from its deployment? This is where a Workday implementation partner comes into play.

What Is a Workday Implementation Partner?

There are plenty of reasons why it makes sense for enterprises to utilize Workday solutions. But doing so comes with its own set of challenges. The range of outcomes for Workday implementation is incredibly wide. Those who make the right moves deploying and using Workday over the long term will achieve better results than those who take less optimal paths. No matter the quality of software applications, there’s still a level of responsibility that rests with the user.

This is where Workday partners come into play. Essentially, you don’t have to go at it alone when utilizing Workday. There are organizations that offer Workday-related services that run the gamut from on-boarding to continuing support. Choosing a winning Workday partner can help your organization get much better results. These are a few of the ways a Workday partner can assist in this process:

  • Translate your needs into action – You know what you need from Workday; but do you know how to accomplish it? Moreover, do you know how to go above and beyond what you originally imagined to realize new efficiencies? This is exactly what you can expect from a great Workday partner.
  • Show you full platform capabilities – It can take a long time to figure out how to make a software application conform to your needs. Utilizing a Workday partner will allow you to get the full benefits of the platform in less time, which will help both with operations and finances.
  • Have someone guide you through updates – As already mentioned; Workday is a suite of applications allergic to stagnation. While this keeps Workday services constantly on the cusp of what’s useful and productive for teams, it also requires active engagement on the user end. A Workday partner will keep you up-to-date on all current best practices and uses for the Workday platform.

A Workday partner can be a positive influence on your adoption and ongoing use of the Workday suite. Yet, not all Workday partners are going to offer the same level of services. Let’s investigate what to look for when seeking a Workday partner.

What Are the Qualities of the Best Workday Implementation Partners?

Now that you know a Workday partner can play a vital role in its successful implementation, you need to get an idea for what qualities make the best Workday partners. These are some things you should look for and expect from Workday implementation partners:

  • Ability to further increase ROI – When evaluating anything in the business world, it’s essential to carefully consider return on investment (ROI) before allocating capital. Workday is known to be a terrific investment, as it consistently creates return for enterprises. You want your Workday implementation partner to take this to an even greater degree. Workday partners can accomplish this through improving your internal data usage, getting your system up and operational in less time, and knowing how to manage the platform more efficiently. Ensure a Workday partner can show how they’ve created value through their services in the past through quantifiable return figures.
  • Knowledge and services through the whole lifecycle – The process of deploying Workday isn’t just a finish line you cross and then call it a day. It’s an ongoing process, constantly requiring optimization, configuration, and support. Can your Workday partner handle all that? Going with a Workday implementation partner that has broad, but also specialized, experience will help guarantee you’re getting the most out of the platform, while reaching cost parity and return sooner.
  • Proven track record of successful deployment – This should go without saying, but it’s still something that’s mistakenly overlooked at times. You only want a Workday partner that has a proven track record of getting deployed at other enterprises at your scale and in your industry. While this might not be as critical of a concern for all organizations, some businesses, such as those that operate in highly regulated areas, need to be extra vigilant about data security. A botched platform deployment can leave enterprise data vulnerable to malicious parties, which can be catastrophic for groups that deal with highly sensitive data. Only trust a time-tested Workday partner with your precious digital assets.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that the right Workday implementation partner can significantly affect the speed, quality, and long-term success of Workday deployment. Make sure you look for the best qualities in a Workday partner during your search.

What is the Origin of the BlackLivesMatter Movement?

The BlackLivesMatter movement is something you must have heard at one point in time. It rocked the US and the world to its core when this movement started. Every college and university student has to know about this movement now as it has changed history in its way and is an integral part of education now.

What was the Original Structure of the Black Lives Matter Movement?

The Black Lives Matter movement was founded in 2013 by three black female organizers: Opal Tometi, Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement was started as a reaction to a situation these powerful women knew needed looking into. It was formed due to the unjust killing of Trayvon Martin. George Zimmerman’s neighbourhood watch shot an unarmed, black teenager walking around a district.

Zimmerman called the police about a black man looking “suspicious,” but Zimmerman had shot the budding youth before law enforcement could arrive. This cold-blooded murder led to a tasking case where Zimmerman was acquitted of the second-degree murder charge he was charged with. The Black Lives Matter movement started as a hashtag on social media and quickly gained ground due to this acquittal. The original structure of the organization was as an information platform and an organizing tool. A tool dedicated to fighting anti-black violence, racism, unfair treatment, and other affiliations black people face.

What’s Changed about the BLM Structure since then?

The BLM movement has risen to become one of the biggest civil movements in the United States. The moment in 2020 when millions of US citizens decided to come forward in a March, a BLM protest under the #Black Lives Matter or #BLM slogan, the game changed, and the movement became more prominent than ever. It quickly rose to a greater level, and it has become more traditional in the process. It’s like there is a new hierarchy in the movement.

Members typically see the movement as decentralized with no clear superior in charge. But now, it seems like power got to the head of some members and their behavioural patterns changed towards others. Coupled with the fact that some members are more recognized, the structure took a hierarchical structure. There are many essay examples about the movement online.

Photo by Kelly L from Pexels

How is Public Opinion about BLM Changing and Why?

When the movement started, it was solid, and it led to a very new mindset, showing masses how terrible and rampant police brutality is among blacks. But now, it seems like the hype is falling. Studies have shown that more people are putting their trust in US law enforcement in the USA. Some surveys showed how many white Americans aged 47 to 55 have the highest percentage of those who dropped the cause. When Trayvon was shot, the movement was very solid. Then after a couple of years, enthusiasm started dropping among the white folks. Till Floyd’s killings happened, and interest piqued up again. But dropped after a while.

The Black American movement is still solid; interests are not dying down across all genders, ages and individuality. The people dropping back had a couple of reasons; some said it was because things would never change, some changed because of a new thing they saw online.

Is this Evolution of Black Lives Matter Typical of Social Movement?

The evolution of the BLM movement is quite typical and not typical of a social movement. An excellent social movement will gain recognition and more attention because people can relate to them. This is what happened with the BLM movement. But after a while, people’s interests will start to wane. People are dynamic and cannot stay at the same frequency for a long time. The movement is not so typical because it gained tremendous coverage and members in a ridiculously little time. Many social movements don’t get to the stage of power and prominence the BLM movement have reached.

Is it all Clear what Structure BLM will or should have in the Future?

Humans are dynamic, and no one can exactly tell what will happen in the future. But there is speculation the movement will continue in its hierarchical form and maybe expand the idea to all its facets. The situation has already been set in stone, and some members already have titles, distinguishing them from the rest.

Conclusion

The BLM movement will always be a prominent and powerful political force in the US and other parts of the world. With branches and headquarters in different countries and cities, it is safe to say that this movement is here to stay.

Meat Loaf Dies Aged 74

Dallas-born singer and actor Meat Loaf has died at the age of 74.

His Bat Out Of Hell album is one of the best-selling of all time.

The news of his death was confirmed on the star’s Facebook page by his family.

“Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side,” a message read.

Meat Loaf sold 100 million albums worldwide and also appeared in movies like Fight Club, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Wayne’s World.

“Daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends have been with him throughout the last 24 hours,” his family continued.

“We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man.”

“We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time.

“From his heart to your souls…don’t ever stop rocking!”

Meat Loaf was born Marvin Lee Aday but also known as Michael, and got his nickname when his dad said he looked as red as meat at birth, before a high school football coach added the “loaf”.

He was best known for his Bat Out Of Hell trilogy, which sold millions of albums worldwide.

Meat Loaf released a string of other albums in the late 1970s and 1980s, most notably notably Dead Ringer and Midnight at the Lost and Found.

Cher, who duetted with him on the 1981 track Dead Ringer for Love, recalled having “had so much fun” with the singer on the track.

In the 90s, Meat Loaf’s hit I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) was the UK’s best-selling single of 1993 and earned him a Grammy Award.

On screen, Meat Loaf played Eddie in 1975 musical film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was bouncer Tiny in 1992’s Wayne’s World, and appeared opposite Brad Pitt as bodybuilder Robert Paulsen in 1999’s Fight Club.

Bat Out Of Hell – which remains one of the top 10 biggest-selling albums ever, alongside LPs by Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and the Eagles – was also adapted as a stage musical, written by long-time collaborator Jim Steinman.

Tributes have been paid from the world of entertainment.

Bonnie Tyler, who recorded an album with Meat Loaf in 1989, said he was “a larger than life character with a voice & stage presence to match & is one of those rare people who truly was a one off talent and personality.”

Meat Loaf had his battles with illness and injuries over the years.

In 1978, he broke his leg jumping off a stage in Ottawa, Canada, finishing his tour performing in a wheelchair.

The star also fainted on stage while performing in Pittsburgh in 2011 and then collapsed on stage during a concert in Canada in 2016.

Three years later, Meat Loaf broke his collar bone falling off an interview stage at a convention in Texas.

When Jim Steinman died last year Meat Loaf paid tribute, posting: “Coming here soon, my brother Jimmy.”

Novak Djokovic Set to Be Deported from Australia After Loosing Visa Battle

Tennis star Novak Djokovic is set to be deported from Australia after losing a last-ditch court bid to stay in the country.

Judges rejected the Serbian’s challenge to the government’s decision to cancel his visa on “health and good order” grounds.

The world number one’s hopes of defending his Australian Open title and winning a record 21st Grand Slam in Melbourne are over.

Novak Djokovic, 34, said he was “extremely disappointed” but accepted the ruling.

He said in a statement: “I will co-operate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country.”

It was not immediately clear when he would leave.

Novak Djokovic’s supporters fell silent outside the courtroom as the decision was announced.

Australian PM Scott Morrison welcomed “the decision to keep our borders strong and keep Australians safe”.

“Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected,” he said.

Novak Djokovic launched the case after Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used his ministerial powers to cancel the unvaccinated player’s visa, arguing that his presence in the country risked fanning anti-vaccine sentiment.

It was the second time Novak Djokovic’s visa had been revoked, after a first cancelation over not following Covid entry rules was overturned by a different judge.

Coronavirus: Novak Djokovic Tests Positive for Covid-19

During January 16 court hearing before a three-judge panel, Novak Djokovic’s defense unsuccessfully argued that the grounds given by the government were “invalid and illogical”.

Chief Justice James Allsop said the federal court’s ruling was based on the lawfulness and legality of the minister’s decision, not on the “merits or wisdom of that decision”.

Full reasoning for the ruling will be made public in the coming days, he said.

Deportation orders usually include a three-year ban on returning to Australia, though this can be waived in certain circumstances.

The January 16 decision marks the end of a 10-day saga over Novak Djokovic’s Australian visa.

There has been much public anger in Australia over the player’s attempt to enter the country unvaccinated. The federal government has repeatedly said people must comply with the strict laws in place to deal with the pandemic, and that no-one is “above the law”.

Novak Djokovic was originally granted a medical exemption to enter Australia by two different independent health panels – one commissioned by Tennis Australia, the other by the state government of Victoria – after testing positive for coronavirus in mid-December.

However, the Australian Border Force detained him on January 5 for not meeting federal coronavirus requirements.

A judge later overturned that decision, but the government stepped in on January 14 to revoke the visa again, saying doing so was in the public interest.

Although Novak Djokovic is not vaccinated against Covid-19, he has not actively promoted anti-vax disinformation. However, Australian anti-vaxxers have been using the hashtag #IStandWithDjokovic on social media.

Australian opposition politician Kristina Keneally accused the government of a “litany of failures” in dealing with Djokovic’s visa application, as she questioned why the tennis player was granted a visa to begin with.

The government “mishandled Novak Djokovic’s case, undermined Australia’s border security settings, and provided a lightning rod for the anti-vaccination movement”, she argued.

In his statement on January 16, Novak Djokovic said he was “uncomfortable” with the focus placed on him because of the visa row.

“I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love,” he said.

Italy’s Salvatore Caruso, who is ranked 150th in the world, will now replace Novak Djokovic in his match against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic on January 17.

New year, new body! That should be your mantra and motivation to stay fit. Staying fit is important, not just because your body gets to look better but also because it generally enhances your health and keeps your body’s mind and soul in check. This is essential as it helps your life get better as unfitness is a leading cause of many terminal diseases. Therefore, as the year unravels, it is important to start a fitness journey so that you’ll be able to have a hitch-free year health-wise.

How Do I Start My Fitness Journey?

There are vital steps you need to take to start your fitness journey. If these steps are followed religiously and done properly, you will attain your fitness goal for the year. They include:

Get A Gym Membership

There is a lot of working out that needs to be done to stay fit. And sometimes, you may need to use certain equipment to aid your exercise routine. However, these types of equipment are not cheap, so buying them for personal use will not be recommended. Instead, it is advisable to subscribe to a gym membership to access different equipment and tools for a small monthly fee. A gym membership will also go a long way in motivating you and giving you a detailed and well-organized routine to achieve your fitness goal.

Photo by Gabin Vallet on Unsplash

Exercise Daily

After getting your gym membership, you should exercise for at least an hour each day. It doesn’t have to be strenuous and exhausting. It could just be moderate physical activities that you could include in your everyday life. However, if your goal is to shed a few pounds, you must do a higher-level intensive workout. For example, you could take a brisk walk for an hour. Or even jog and set certain intervals to sprint during that hour. As you do all of these, ensure that you are not undergoing any form of pain during your workout session apart from the muscle ache that is bound to occur when you undergo high-intensity workouts.

Keep Track of Daily Calories and Food Consumption

To keep fit, you have to keep track of how many calories you consume or burn in a day. This will go a long way in planning out your physical exercise. This is the reason why bodybuilders’ can amass so much body mass. By simply planning out their meals and taking in more calories than the average person, they can achieve their body goals. On the other hand, if you intend to lose weight because you want a skinnier physique, you will cut down the calories you consume.

Get Sufficient  Sleep

This is very important, but it is very neglected. The fact that many people have busy schedules that cannot be compromised cannot be ignored, but it is extremely important to get sufficient sleep to recharge the body’s batteries. Having an average of six to eight hours of sleep will keep the body going throughout the day, but it is important to take a break and get a nap if you are experiencing fatigue and tiredness. Ensure that you have rested a bit before delving into your routine if you intend to exercise.

Stay Motivated

This is the most important part of your fitness journey. Staying motivated is key to sustaining your fitness journey all year round. If you can stay positive, you will push yourself to get that fit body you’ve always wanted.

Your fitness should be your priority as it determines your general well-being. You owe it to yourself to always stay fit and healthy. Therefore, make your fitness your priority.

Novak Djokovic in Detention Ahead of Visa Appeal Hearing

0

Novak Djokovic has been detained in Australia ahead of a court hearing that will determine whether he can stay in the country.

The men’s tennis No 1 faces deportation after his visa was canceled for a second time, with the government labelling him a threat to public health.

Novak Djokovic’s lawyers are appealing against what they called an “irrational” decision, with the hearing set for January 16.

The 34-year-old unvaccinated tennis star is still scheduled to play the Australian Open on January 17 in Melbourne.

If the Serbian were to win the tournament, he would become the most successful men’s tennis player in the history of the sport with 21 major titles.

However, January 16 hearing, which has been scheduled for 09:30 local time, is crucial if Djokovic is to be able to compete just hours later.

If he loses the appeal, the world’s top-ranked men’s tennis player faces deportation and a three-year visa ban.

On January 15, shortly after an online pre-trial hearing, Novak Djokovic returned to the immigration detention hotel where he was held earlier this week. He will remain there until his final appeal on January 16.

Novak Djokovic’s Australia Visa Revoked for Second Time

Novak Djokovic’s Australia Entry Delayed over Visa Issue

Coronavirus: Novak Djokovic Tests Positive for Covid-19

Novak Djokovic’s visa was first revoked shortly after his arrival in Melbourne on January 6, after Australian Border Force officials said he had “failed to provide appropriate evidence” to receive a vaccine exemption.

The tennis star was detained for days at an immigration hotel, before his visa was reinstated by a judge, who ordered his release, ruling that border officials ignored correct procedure when he arrived.

On January 14, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke once again canceled Novak Djokovic’s visa under separate powers in Australia’s Migration Act.

The act allows the minister to deport anyone he deems a potential risk to “the health, safety or good order of the Australian community”.

PM Scott Morrison said the decision followed “careful consideration”.

Alluding to the heavy criticism his government has faced for allowing the unvaccinated player into Australia, Scott Morrison said: “Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected.”

Court documents were released on January 15 that showed Alex Hawke chose to cancel Novak Djokovic’s visa because – in his view – the unvaccinated player’s presence could fuel opposition to Covid-19 vaccination.

“[I] consider that his presence may be a risk to the health of the Australian community,” he wrote in a letter to Novak Djokovic and his lawyers, adding that he believed it could also provoke “civil unrest” because he is “a person of influence and status”.

Novak Djokovic’s legal team say their grounds for appeal will centre on the “invalid and illogical” rationale of Alex Hawke’s decision, which lawyer Nick Wood said was based on the threat of “exciting anti-vax sentiment”.

Nick Wood said he believed deporting the Serbian player would potentially do the same thing.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, meanwhile, condemned the Australian minister’s decision, telling Novak Djokovic in an Instagram message: “Novak, we stand by you.”

“If you wanted to ban Novak Djokovic from winning the 10th trophy in Melbourne why didn’t you return him immediately, why didn’t you tell him ‘it is impossible to obtain a visa’?” President Vucic added.

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, one of Novak Djokovic’s biggest rivals, said on January 15: “[The] Australian Open is much more important than any player. If he’s playing finally, okay. If he’s not playing, the Australian Open will be great… with or without him.”

Japanese player Naomi Osaka described the controversy surrounding Novak Djokovic as “an unfortunate situation”.

“He’s such a great player and it’s kind of sad that some people might remember [him] in this way. But I also think it’s… up to the government how Australia is deciding to handle it,” she added.

Novak Djokovic’s Australia Visa Revoked for Second Time

Australia has canceled Novak Djokovic’s visa for a second time in a row over the tennis star’s right to remain in the country unvaccinated.

The decision on “health and good order” grounds means the 34-year-old Serbian could be deported and get a three-year visa ban.

However, Novak Djokovic can still launch another legal challenge to remain in Australia.

The men’s tennis No 1 was scheduled to play in the Australian Open, which begins on January 17.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke said in a statement: “Today I exercised my power… to cancel the visa held by Mr. Novak Djokovic on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so.”

PM Scott Morrison said that the decision followed “careful consideration.”

Alluding to the heavy criticism his government has faced for allowing the unvaccinated player into Australia, the prime minister said: “Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected.”

Novak Djokovic will meet immigration officials in Melbourne on January 15, and will be allowed to stay in his current accommodation on January 14 – some Australian media had speculated that he may be moved to an immigration detention hotel.

The nine-time Australian Open winner was hoping to defend his title next week, which if he won, would make him the most successful male tennis player in history with a record 21 Grand Slam titles.

US Open 2020: Novak Djokovic Disqualified After Hitting Line Judge with Ball

Coronavirus: Novak Djokovic Tests Positive for Covid-19

For the moment, Novak Djokovic remains in the Australian Open draw and is due to face fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic early next week. If he is deported, however, his slot will most likely go to Russian player Andrey Rublev.

Novak Djokovic’s visa was first revoked shortly after his arrival in Melbourne on January 6, after Australian border Force officials said he had “failed to provide appropriate evidence” to receive a vaccine exemption.

The palyer’s initial announcement that he was coming to play in the Open prompted a backlash from some Australians, who have lived under long and strict Covid lockdowns, because it was unclear if he could meet Australia’s strict entry rules. Melbourne in particular was hard bit by lockdowns, enduring 262 days under heavy restrictions last year.

Novak Djokovic was detained for hours at the airport’s immigration control when he first arrived, and then spent days at an immigration hotel. Days later his visa was reinstated by a judge, who ordered his release, ruling that border officials ignored correct procedure when he arrived.

However, on January 14, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke cancelled Djokovic’s visa under separate powers in Australia’s Migration Act.

The act allows the minister to deport anyone he deems a potential risk to “the health, safety or good order of the Australian community”.

However, Novak Djokovic can still appeal this.

It comes after Djokovic addressed allegations that his agent had accidentally made a false declaration on his travel form.

Novak Djokovic also admitted meeting a journalist and having a photoshoot after testing positive for Covid-19.

Full House Actor Bob Saget Dies Suddenly Aged 65

Actor and comedian Bob Saget, best known for starring in the sitcom Full House, has died suddenly aged 65, his family has announced.

Bob Saget was found unresponsive by staff in his room at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Orlando, Florida on January 9.

Officers from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department arrived after a call from hotel staff and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The exact details surrounding his death remain unclear.

However, in a short statement posted to Twitter, the Sheriff’s Department said that detectives had found no signs of foul play or drug use during initial enquiries.

Bob Saget’s family said in a statement: “We are devastated to confirm that our beloved Bob passed away today.

“He was everything to us and we want you to know how much he loved his fans, performing live and bringing people from all walks of life together with laughter.”

Bob Saget, a veteran stand-up comedian, had just started a new comedy tour across the US, performing as recently as January 8 in the city of Jacksonville, Florida.

After the show he had expressed his joy at being back on stage in a post on his Instagram page, telling fans that he was “happily addicted” to his craft.

“I’m back in comedy like I was when I was 26. I guess I’m finding my new voice and loving every moment of it,” he said.

Fuller House: Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen Not Returning for Full House Revival

Although Bob Saget was idolized by many comedians for his profane and often cutting act, he was best known for his role in the sitcom, Full House, where he starred alongside the actors John Stamos and fellow comic Dave Coulier.

He won plaudits for his portrayal of Danny Tanner, a widowed father of three daughters, playing the role from 1987 to 1995.

Bob Saget reprised the role in 2016 when Netflix revived the program for a further five seasons.

In more recent years he found fame among younger generations as the narrator of the hit show How I Met Your Mother and for his guest stints as a highly fictionalized version of himself in the TV series, Entourage.

John Stamos, who worked with Bob Saget on Full House and Fuller House tweeted: “I am broken. I am gutted.  I am in complete and utter shock.  I will never ever have another friend like him.  I love you so much Bobby.”

Candace Cameron Bure remembered Bob Saget, who played her father on Full House, writing on Twitter: “I don’t know what to say . I have no words. Bob was one of the best humans beings I’ve ever known in my life. I loved him so much.”

Two Innovative Ways to Work for Yourself in 2022

The COVID pandemic has caused many of us to rethink our careers, whether because we’ve changed our priorities or because our jobs may not be there for us anymore. Thankfully, there are more ways to work for yourself now than perhaps at any other time. Here are two innovative ideas for how to work for yourself in 2022.

Consider a Career in Real Estate

One unexpected development in the past couple of years has been the extraordinary boom in real estate. Home values have gone up tremendously all the way across the United States. In many neighborhoods, houses are being sold almost as soon as they are listed.

This trend has created a highly lucrative career for real estate agents. More people may be seeking out agents than previously since houses sell so quickly. Home seekers struggle to find the house they want before it is already purchased by somebody else.

By using quality real estate lead generation tools like the one provided by Haines, you can find essential homeowner and property information and increase your leads capacity, enabling you to make a great living with a career working for yourself in real estate.

Provide Child or Pet Care

Both child and pet care are booming industries right now. Many parents are reticent to send their children to daycare where they may be exposed to the COVID virus, which means that individual caretakers or caretakers who provide daycare services for only a couple of children at a time are in hot demand. With a few simple qualifications like CPR training and experience working with kids, you can set yourself up to make a great living in the comfort of your own home or in client homes looking after children.

Many more people also became pet owners in the past couple of years as loneliness, boredom, and more time spent at home drove people to purchase or adopt pets. As those new pet owners need to return to work, they may be finding that they need help taking care of their pets. This can be a great opportunity for you to launch a career taking care of other people’s pets, whether you offer care in your home, in the client’s home, or take dogs for walks.

Work for Yourself in 2022

Do you have dreams of a fulfilling career in which you are your own boss? There may never have been a better time to go it alone than now. Whether you’re interested in a career in real estate or you’d like to take care of children or pets, 2022 is a great year to get started in these exciting careers.

5 Reasons Why iPhone Owners Should Upgrade Their Devices to iOS 15

Every September, Apple announces a new, major version of its iOS operating system for iPhones – and, true to form, Apple made iOS 15 available for download on 20th September.

However, though the software is compatible with all iPhones already running iOS 14, iPhone users have seemingly not taken to iOS 15 quite so eagerly. One MacRumors report suggests that iOS 15 reached about a fifth of supported iPhones by the end of September – but, if you haven’t yet upgraded to iOS 15, the following exciting additions it brings could force your hand.

More Zoom-like FaceTime calls

Apple has brought FaceTime closer to parity with Zoom by letting users join FaceTime video calls from any device, not just Apple ones, on the web.

The Portrait mode enabling users to blur the background of a subject in photography – while keeping the subject itself looking crisp – has also been added to FaceTime, where Ars Technica’s Samuel Axon says “it’s dramatically better-looking than the background-blurring effect in Zoom”.

More synchronicity between Messages and other apps

Imagine how convenient it would be if, when a friend or family member uses Messages to show you photographic, web, news, music, podcast or TV content, you could quickly insert it into a particular Apple app? That’s what the new Shared with You feature lets you do.

In Apple apps like Photos, Safari, News, Music, Podcasts and TV, the feature also automatically surfaces such content your Messages contacts have shared in that app.

Holding a Smartphone

It’s easier to stay ‘in the zone’ with Focus notifications

Though notifications are supposed to be useful, they can – in practice – distract you for insufficiently good reason. This dilemma has led Apple to introduce Focus, where users can filter notifications so that only the most timely and relevant ones get through.

There are some ready-made filters, such as the Work Focus, which limits notifications to those from co-workers and work-oriented apps, and the Fitness Focus for preventing unhelpful notifications when you are engaged in a workout.

The Live Text feature makes photographed text interactive

Text that doesn’t react in any way when you tap a photo of it is sooo iOS 14. Once you’ve installed iOS 15, you will be able to interact with text in photos you view anywhere on your iPhone – including in the Photos app, in social media apps and even on the web.

Through tapping that text, you could – for example – copy, paste or translate. You could tap a photographed phone number to ring it or the image of a URL to load the webpage in question.

An intuitive – but optional – redesign for Safari

Safari’s search and address bar have been switched from the top to the bottom of the interface, making the app easier to use while holding the device with one hand.

While the old Safari design is still available in iOS 15, you could find adjusting to the new design almost as useful a step as buying one of the relatively recent iPhones compatible with an especially wide range of iOS 15 features.

Novak Djokovic’s Australia Entry Delayed over Visa Issue

0

Novak Djokovic’s entry to Australia has been delayed over an issue with his visa.

The No 1 tennis player arrived in Melbourne on January 5, where authorities noticed that his team had made a mistake on his application.

Novak Djokovic is due to play in the Australian Open, after being exempted from vaccination rules.

However, the Serbian player’s team had not requested a visa that permits medical exemptions for being unvaccinated.

All players and staff at the tournament must be vaccinated or have an exemption granted by an expert independent panel.

Djokovic has been quizzed for hours about his visa status and exemption evidence in a room in Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport and is still awaiting a decision. He has not spoken about his vaccination status, but last year he said he was “opposed to vaccination”.

Australia’s border force had sought clarification from the Victorian state government about his visa application, the Melbourne-based Age newspaper reports.

But state government Minister Jaala Pulford tweeted that Djokovic’s application would not be supported. Visa approvals were a matter for the federal government, she added.

Meanwhile, the player’s father, Srdjan Djokovic said his son was being held in a room guarded by police.

“I have no idea what’s going on, they’re holding my son captive for five hours.

“This is not just a fight for Novak, but a fight for the whole world. If they don’t let him go in half an hour, we will gather on the street” Novak’s father said in a statement released to the media.

Djokovic’s coach and fellow Grand Slam champion Goran Ivanisevic posted a photo of himself on Instagram from a room in Melbourne, along with the caption: “Not the most usual trip Down Under.”

Earlier, Australia’s prime minister said Novak Djokovic would be refused entry to the country unless he provided evidence that he could not be vaccinated for medical reasons.

Scott Morrison said the tennis player “could be on the next plane home” if the proof was insufficient.

The tournament’s organizers say the defending champion has not been given special treatment, but the decision has infuriated many Australians. Australia is seeing tens of thousands of Covid-19 cases for the first time after enduring some of the world’s strictest restrictions.

Scott Morrison said Novak Djokovic would be required to present evidence upon arrival that he has a genuine medical exemption from vaccination.

The Australian Open begins on January 17 in Melbourne.

The tournament’s chief executive, Craig Tiley, said 26 athletes had applied for medical exemptions. “A handful” had been granted, he said, under guidelines set by federal regulators.

“We made it extra difficult for anyone applying for an application to ensure it was the right process and to make sure the medical experts deal with it independently,” he told Channel 9.

More than 90% of Australia’s over-16 population is fully vaccinated, but some people still cannot travel interstate or globally because of current measures.

Many Australians had previously accused the government of allowing the rich and famous to do as they please while ordinary people remained separated from sick and dying loved ones.

France: President Macron Wants to “Piss Off” Unvaccinated People

France’s President Emmanuel Macron has sparked outrage after using divisive, vulgar language to say he wanted to make life difficult for unvaccinated people.

He told Le Parisien newspaper: “I really want to piss them off, and we’ll carry on doing this – to the end.”

Three months ahead of a presidential election, opponents of President Macron said his words were unworthy of a president.

French lawmakers halted debate on a law barring the unvaccinated from much of public life.

The session in the National Assembly was brought to a standstill for a second night running on January 4 as opposition delegates complained about the president’s language, with one leading figure describing it as “unworthy, irresponsible and premeditated”.

The legislation is expected to be approved in a vote this week, but it has angered vaccine opponents.

Mandatory vaccinations are being introduced in several European countries, with Austria leading the way for over-14s from next month and Germany planning a similar move for adults. Italy’s government was on January 5 considering a compulsory vaccine pass for at least anyone over 60.

In his interview with Le Parisien on January 4, President Macron used the vulgar term emmerder to say how he wanted to stir up the unvaccinated. He would not “vaccinate by force” the remaining five million who had not had a dose, but hoped to encourage people to get the vaccines by “limiting as much as possible their access to activities in social life”.

He said: “I won’t send [unvaccinated people] to prison.

“So we need to tell them, from January 15, you will no longer be able to go to the restaurant. You will no longer be able to go for a coffee, you will no longer be able to go to the theatre. You will no longer be able to go to the cinema.”

Ahead of a presidential election campaign in which Emmanuel Macron is yet to announce his intention to run, his remarks prompted a strong reaction from opposition figures.

Right-wing Republicans candidate Valérie Pécresse said she was outraged that the president had accused unvaccinated people of not being citizens.

“You have to accept them as they are – lead them, bring them together and not insult them,” she told CNews.

Party colleague Bruno Retailleau said pointedly: “Emmanuel Macron says he has learned to love the French, but it seems he especially likes to despise them.”

Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen tweeted: “A president shouldn’t say that… Emmanuel Macron is unworthy of his office.”

Meanwhile, leftist politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon described the remarks as an astonishing confession: “It’s clear, the vaccination pass is a collective punishment against individual freedom.”

The latest opinion gave President Macron the edge over his rivals on January 5, with 27% of votes in the first round on April 10, ahead of Valérie Pécresse and Marine Le Pen both on 16%. The poll for Le Figaro/LCI also gave him a run-off victory, with the closest margin of 55%-45% with the Republican candidate.

France: President Emmanuel Macron Diagnosed with Covid-19

Emmanuel Macron’s choice of language is not unprecedented for a French leader.

The same word was used by Georges Pompidou in 1966 when he said it was time to stop annoying the French. Like him, Emmanuel Macron said his role was not to irritate the French, but the unvaccinated was a different story.

PM Jean Castex told parliament later that people everywhere were saying the same as the president. “Our citizens have a sense of exasperation seeing a whole kind of restrictions imposed while others choose to break free of them.”

France has one of the highest Covid vaccination rates in the EU, with more than 90% of the adult population double-jabbed.

For months France has asked people to show either proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test to access many public venues.

However, the French government wants to remove the option to show a negative test in response to record increases in infections, driven by the highly contagious Omicron and Delta variants of Covid.

On January 5, France reported 332,252 new daily Covid cases – the highest number of daily infections recorded in the country since the start of the pandemic.

Pope Francis: “Owning Pets Instead of Having Kids Is Selfish”

Pope Francis has said during a general audience at the Vatican in Rome that choosing pets over children is selfish.

The Pope’s comments came as he was discussing parenthood.

He told the audience: “Today … we see a form of selfishness.

“We see that some people do not want to have a child.

“Sometimes they have one, and that’s it, but they have dogs and cats that take the place of children.

“This may make people laugh, but it is a reality.”

The practice “is a denial of fatherhood and motherhood and diminishes us, takes away our humanity”, Pope Francis added.

The 85-year-old pontiff said that people who are unable to have children for biological reasons should consider adoption, urging people “not to be afraid” in embarking on parenthood.

He also spoke of a “demographic winter” – possibly referring to countries with declining birth rates – in which “we see that people do not want to have children, or just one and no more”.

Pope Francis Endorses Same-Sex Civil Unions

It is not the first time Pope Francis has taken aim at people who choose pets over children.

In 2014, he said that having pets instead of children was “another phenomenon of cultural degradation”, and that emotional relationships with pets was “easier” than the “complex” relationship between parents and children.

The Pope has been photographed petting animals ranging from dogs to panthers in the past, but he is not thought to have a personal pet.

His 2015 visit to the US was marked by dog owners dressing their pets in canine papal outfits with the hashtag #popedog on Instagram.

Asked at the time if the Pope was aware of the trend, a Vatican spokeswoman said: “I imagine he has more important things to think about.”

Choosing a Business Name You Won’t Have to Change

0

While it is possible to rebrand your business months or years down the line, this option can be confusing for customers — not to mention costly. After all, changing your business name may involve everything from having to update your website domain name to updating marketing across all channels to having to reprint physical media like business cards and signage.

Ideally, you’ll be able to choose a business name right off the bat you won’t have to change. Picking a timeless title from the get-go will allow you to make branding decisions that stick, cementing your company’s reputation in the minds of customers.

Here are some tips for choosing a business name able to go the distance, saving you the hassle and expense of having to rebrand down the road.

Choose a Clear & Understandable Name

Sometimes the ideas that seem like winners in our own brains fail to translate as well to the rest of the world. The result? You’ll find yourself having to continually correct confused customers. This especially includes names that are difficult to pronounce or spell.

It also pertains to clever names that involve humor or puns — be sure to test these out on audiences to make sure they land before committing. Avoid depending on any terminology or references requiring people to have an advanced level of expertise to understand, as this may push away potential clientele.

As one expert notes for Inc., having to apologize for a complicated name or explain it so that people “get it” just damages the impact of your brand.

Make Sure a Business Name Is Available

Many organizations throughout history have launched using what they felt to be the perfect business names ideas — only to find out they were already legally claimed by another entity. As Nolo explains, you’ll need to conduct a search to find out if a potential name is already trademarked within your industry.

Not only can using an existing business title lead to legal trouble, but it can also confuse customers due to cases of mistaken identity. Case in point: Your website analytics may see increased web traffic bouncing after a brief stint visiting your home page as people realize they’ve landed on the wrong company with a similar name. Similarly, your search engine results may be obscured by the other company despite your best SEO efforts.

These are frustrating situations all around — but can be avoided by doing research into company names already in existence before choosing a winner.

Consider Domain Name Possibilities

As ecommerce continues to grow and redefine doing business as usual, checking domain name possibilities for your business name ideas becomes more important before making a final decision.

Some things to keep in mind when exploring domain name availability:

  • Determine if you will be able to get the name you want with a .com extension, or whether it is already taken — meaning you may need to choose a different extension, like.net.
  • Decide if you want to buy a domain name pertaining directly to your business name or whether you want to choose a domain name made of relevant keywords.
  • Assess whether the name(s) you have in mind are short and understandable enough to be converted into a domain name of a few words or less.
  • Figure out whether your desired domain name is similar enough to other websites to cause possible confusion, as this may indicate a problem with your business name.

If you put in the time and effort to choose a winning business name the first time around, you’ll save yourself lots of headache down the line.

Sexism: Why It’s Everyone’s Responsibility to Nip It in the Bud

0

People often hear the word sexism and wonder what exactly the speaker refers to. It’s hard to know how to stop something if a person doesn’t know what that something is. For this reason, every person must know the definition of sexism and what it entails. Once they have this information, they can take steps to prevent this type of bias in their lives.

What Is Sexism?

The Council of Europe defines sexism as “any expression (act, word, image, gesture) based on the idea that some persons, most often women, are inferior because of their sex. Replace the word women in the previous sentence with the phrase person of color and sexism quickly becomes racism. The same principles apply when speaking of these two issues. Someone is treated less based on their sex, skin color, or another feature.

However, sexism actually works both ways. For instance, a man who files a sexual assault claim may be made to feel like they are at fault or they someone wanted the act to occur. The assumption is that the male is stronger and could overcome their attacker without difficulty. This isn’t the case.

Furthermore, a man may become the victim of a “he said, she said” scenario and find they are automatically seen as the aggressor. This serves as another form of sexism. However, it has far-reaching consequences and any man in this situation needs to get legal help from a sex crimes attorney immediately.

The Harm of Sexism

Sexism leads to a person feeling worthless. They begin changing their behavior and engage in acts of self-censorship. As a result, their health deteriorates. Women and girls find themselves victims of sexism more frequently.

Sexism : - World illustration Awards

A Worldwide Issue

Sexism knows no geographical boundaries. Women journalists state this is a major issue, as 66 percent of them have been confronted with verbal abuse at one time or another. Men in Europe make up three-quarters of new sources and subjects, while 66 percent of girls in the United Kingdom have encountered sexist language in their schools.

Almost 60 percent of women in Amsterdam have been harassed on the street, and half of all women in France have been humiliated or treated unjustly because of their sex. Three-quarters of Serbian businesswomen state people don’t take them as seriously as men, even though they are successful in the workplace. This goes to show how widespread the problem truly is today.

Why This is Important?

Women may dismiss an act of sexism, thinking it is harmless and they should just let it go. However, each act contributes to a climate of fear, insecurity, and intimidation. Over time, the problem escalates and violence becomes acceptable when aimed at women and girls. The impacts affect certain women and men more than others because of their age, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, or another factor.

Every person today must know sexism and its effects on individuals. Until people talk about this problem, it will continue, and countless individuals will be harmed. They’ll suffer from low self-esteem. This could lead to them being victims of domestic violence, sexual crimes, or other suicide. Some victims develop eating disorders while others suffer from isolation and loneliness. Nevertheless, people need to recognize women aren’t the only ones affected. Men can be subject to sexism also, which is why people must understand what it is, how to recognize it, and what steps they can take to combat it. Until everyone does, the problem will continue.

How To Right-size Your Inventory For Whatever Comes Next

0
Image source: Photo by Adrian Sulyok on Unsplash

Inventory can be from bags of flour in the small storeroom of a local bakery to a million-square-foot warehouse stuffed with large crates of big-box chains. But in whatever the case is, accurate inventory management is crucial to every company’s success. In other words, inventory is the sum of all the goods that a company owns and plans to sell. If you are an apparel retailer, products become inventory when you buy and take possession of your suppliers’ shirts, suits, and dresses. These products leave your stock when you sell to customers. Inventory can be stored on-premises, at distribution centers, warehouses, or other facilities. The idea behind right-sizing your inventory revolves around properly managing your inventory. This means you have all the necessary and important products at the right place at the right time. This has been the backbone of your business for centuries and is vital to keep it going and growing. This article highlights important steps that help keep your inventory right-sized.

How Do I Ensure That an Inventory is Right-sized?

In a bid to ensure that the inventory you manage is right-sized, there are a lot of things you need to do and put in place for that to be a success. You have to carry out proper inventory planning to ensure that you do not overload your storage space and that everything in the inventory is traceable. It involves tracking supply, regular counts, and routine reorganization. It is important to note that this isn’t exactly an easy chore, but it’ll certainly become a success if the maximum effort is put in.

Keep Count

You must create a system that will provide maximum visibility and keep an eye on supply ordering, consumption and waste in every nook and cranny of the organization. Management is easier when you have a concise idea and record what you are doing. You can begin this by employing an accurate formulary responsible for capturing all the supplies in use by your organization at your best available contract prices. Ensure that this source is reliable and adequately represents all the approved products and prices for your organization. Inventory planning is no easy work. Suppose you suspect the slightest barrier to accuracy and automation. In that case, it is your duty to have all hands on deck to find the most effective method to help your organization normalize and standardize data. You could use an internal team or even outsource the responsibility.

Have Seamless Communication

If you manage an inventory, you should know that communication is nonstop. For every organization to grow and progress, good and uninterrupted communication throughout the organization is needed to keep people and all processes on track. You should use a solution to track and receive details of items that gain access into your facility and track these items’ consumption. This should also be extended across your entire organization. The communication in your inventory should be nonstop. You should be aware that it isn’t a one-time activity. That is why you should have a team that can notice and communicate to you about the items that access your facility and inform you how each of these items is being used. You should also ensure that you secure and close the loop on your internal communication processes so that outsiders cannot gain information on what is happening inside. You can do this by partnering with your members of staff to identify and reduce problem areas. This will help them know and understand how they can adequately carry out their responsibilities.

Cut Off Excess Supply

When you begin to properly keep records on your supply levels, you should endeavor to cut off excess supplies by working through surplus inventory. Make inquiries on new items and vendors you need to help future-proof your in-house supplies. After you have discovered all of what is needed, the next step you should take is to work towards curbing out your excess inventories; this is your fastest and immediate opportunity for inventory reduction and will aid in reducing inventory expenses when it is time to check and balance on your sheets, this will go a long way in improving your financial ratios. Many inventory managers and store owners also use the Just-In-Time strategy, which allows them to only receive products when they need them to avoid prolonged storage. You should also write off damaged, lost, and expired inventory so that you can get it off your books. This will improve cash flow and largely reduce obsolete products.

Set Goals

Ensure that you create a conducive environment to aid continual performance and endeavor to set measurable and realistic goals for yourself and staff members. You should also work hand in hand with your finance team to determine all the areas where tracking and reporting will deliver the greatest benefit to your organization. Take your time, think, make analyses and set specific and measurable goals. You can start this by measuring the cost of all inventory you have on hand, then take your time to compare the cost of supplies after 6 and 12 months of process improvement to validate how much you have improved. Assign a leader amongst your staff on the supply chain team and charge them with the responsibility of measuring success rates.

Reorganize Your Supply Areas

Take your time to create a vivid requirement map to maintain and identify supply storage areas. Have and properly arrange how products will be stored properly and reorganize the issues. You should also ensure that you organize items by their type and uses. Make products easily accessible to members of staff and also monitor how it is being used so that whatever they are out of can be easily replenished so that progress can be attained. Also, try to combine storage locations whenever it is possible. You could also relocate products and goods into well-organized and properly managed locations where they can be properly tracked and replenished accurately. You should also raise price awareness to help in identifying high-value items. You should also train all members of your team to help reduce overuse and waste.

Managing an inventory is demanding, and it requires a lot of effort, dedication, and an ample amount of creativity to keep things going as they should. Depending on the size of your inventory, you might want to consider getting tools and software to make the work lighter. However, with these steps and solutions proffered, your inventory will be in a great state for whatever comes next.

Joe Biden Warns Vladimir Putin Against Invading Ukraine During Video Call

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned President Joe Biden that imposing new sanctions over Ukraine could lead to a complete breakdown in relations.

In a phone call late on December 30, Vladimir Putin said such sanctions would be a “colossal mistake”.

President Biden, meanwhile, told Vladimir Putin that the US and its allies would respond decisively to any invasion of Ukraine.

The call, requested by Russia, was the pair’s second such conversation this month and lasted for almost an hour.

It marked the latest effort to defuse tensions over Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia, where Ukrainian officials say more than 100,000 Russian troops have been sent.

The build-up has prompted concern in the West, with the US threatening Vladimir Putin with sanctions “like none he’s ever seen” if Ukraine comes under attack.

Russia, however, denies it is planning to invade Ukraine and says the troops are there for exercises. It says it is entitled to move its troops freely on its own soil.

Although the two sides exchanged warnings during the call, Russian foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters shortly after that Vladimir Putin was “pleased” with the conversation. He added that it had created a “good backdrop” for future talks.

Vladimir Putin admits Crimea annexation plot before referendum

US and Russian officials are set to meet for in-person talks in Geneva next month, and the White House said President Biden urged his Russian counterpart to pursue a diplomatic solution.

In a holiday message before December 30 call, Vladimir Putin told Joe Biden he was “convinced” the pair could work together based on “mutual respect and consideration of each other’s national interests”.

His spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Moscow was “in the mood for a conversation”.

Ukraine’s defense minister told parliament at the start of December that Russia had massed tens of thousands of troops near the border, and could be gearing up for a large-scale military offensive at the end of January.

Russia has argued the military build-up at the border is a protective measure against NATO, the Western military alliance. It wants legally binding guarantees that NATO will not expand further east, and that certain weapons will not be sent to Ukraine or any neighboring countries.

The US has rejected what it styles as a Kremlin bid to control the future of independent countries.

Ukraine has not been offered NATO membership, but has close ties with the bloc.

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine are nothing new. In 2014, Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and soon after started to back a separatist insurgency in Ukraine’s east that has seen some 14,000 people killed in periodic fighting.

Washington and its European allies have warned Russia to expect severe economic sanctions if troops do cross into Ukraine again.

Richmond’s Confederate Statues to Be Moved to Black History Museum

Confederate monuments taken down in Richmond will likely be moved to a black history museum and cultural center, Virginia officials have said.

An imposing statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee that was removed in September is expected to be among the monuments being transferred.

Memorials to leaders of the pro-slavery, Confederate states in the southern US have been controversial.

A community-led process will decide the fate of the memorials, officials say.

As part of the plan announced on December 30 by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, the monuments will be handed over to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA).

The museum will also coordinate with the city’s Valentine museum – which focuses on Richmond’s history – and the local community to determine how the monuments are used going forward.

The plan, however, still requires the approval of the local city council – which Levar Stoney will seek in January.

“Entrusting the future of these monuments and pedestals to two of our most respected institutions is the right thing to do,” Mayor Stoney said in a statement.

“They will take the time that is necessary to properly engage the public and ensure the thoughtful future uses of these artifacts.”

The collection includes monuments to a number of other prominent Confederate figures – including former Confederate president Jefferson Davis – as well as a ceremonial cannon and a monument to Confederate soldiers and sailors.

Richmond was the capital of the Confederate states during the US Civil War.

Governor Northam said that the monuments “celebrate our country’s tragic division and the side that fought to keep alive the institution of slavery by any means necessary”.

The BHMVA’s interim executive director, Marland Buckner, said in a statement to local media that a handover of the monuments will present “opportunities to deepen our understanding of an essential element of the American story: the expansion of freedom”.

Mayor Stoney ordered that the city’s remaining Confederate monuments, including a 21 ft statue of Robert E. Lee erected in 1890, be removed amid national protests over the murder of George Floyd.

Plans to remove the Lee statue were initially delayed by two separate lawsuits by Richmond residents opposed to its removal.

Hundreds of statues of Lee and other Confederate figures still exist throughout the southern US.

Should I Take a Settlement for My Personal Injury Claim?

0

“Should I settle?” is the most pressing question when you’re involved in a personal injury case. There isn’t a simple solution. It depends on the situation and how you want to proceed. Accepting an offer should only be done if you are convinced that it will cover your medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses. Read on for a few tips on if and when you should take a settlement for personal injury.

Don’t Make a Decision Until You’ve Healed

When renegotiating a low settlement offer, keep in mind that you should never accept a settlement until you have fully recovered from your injuries, often known as maximal medical improvement (MMI). If you haven’t fully healed from your injuries, or to the best of your ability, you may not have all the information you require. Do you have a long list of doctor’s appointments, prescription prescriptions, or physical therapy to look forward to? You won’t know how much your past medical treatments cost or how much medical care you’ll need until you’ve reached your maximum recovery.

Contact a personal injury attorney

Your personal injury lawyer has received considerable training and real-world experience, allowing them to assist you in calculating and pursuing the full value of your claim. Current and expected future medical expenditures, Current and estimated future pay losses, Property damage, Emotional pain and suffering, and whether or not blame for the accident is shared or in question are all elements that might influence how reasonable compensation is calculated in a settlement. As you may expect, some of these considerations are rather simple (for example, previous medical costs), while others are significantly more subjective.

You should negotiate

Whether or not you should accept the current offer may be determined by whether or not you have negotiated it. You might think it’s adequate if you’ve gone back and forth with an insurance company to arrive at the current price. However, if this is your first offer, consider again before accepting. The majority of insurance company settlement offers are low. The average amount collected by injury victims who accepted the first offer was $11,800. Negotiating victims received an average of $42,500.

Is Accepting the Offer Better Than Taking the Case to Trial?

Most personal injury cases are settled for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it is generally preferable for both parties to avoid a lengthy trial. However, not every settlement offer is preferable to going to trial. This is especially true if there’s a potential a jury will award you a larger sum of money (though we can never guarantee what a jury will decide). Your lawyer can advise you whether accepting a settlement offer is a better option than going to court, or vice versa, based on years of experience.

Another important consideration is liability, as the amount of compensation you might receive will be lowered if you share some of the blame. An competent attorney can assist you in preserving and organizing essential evidence, as well as protecting you from making avoidable mistakes while dealing with claims adjusters, allowing you to avoid receiving more blame than you deserve. Your lawyer will level the playing field between you and the insurance company by having the required knowledge and training to deal with insurance companies and their lowball proposals.

Omicron: Major Airlines Cancel Holiday Flights As New Variant Spreads

Thousands of flights around the world have been canceled for the Christmas weekend as the Omicron variant infections continue to surge.

Airlines have blamed shortages of healthy staff for the cancellations of nearly 2,400 flights on December 24 and more than 2,300 on December 25.

More than 800 of those canceled on December 25 were to or from US airports.

In Europe, travel restrictions are among measures aimed at reducing cases, largely driven by the Omicron variant.

Despite early findings that Omicron is milder than other variants, scientists are concerned by the sheer number of infections being recorded.

Many of the flight cancellations are the result of airline crews testing positive, or being forced to self-isolate to stem the spread.

Further delays and disruption is expected with hundreds more flights canceled on December 26, according to website FlightAware.

The US, like many countries around the world, has seen a sharp rise in cases.

Across Europe, governments are bringing in their own measures to combat the increase:

  • Italy, Spain and Greece have made face masks compulsory outdoors again
  • Catalonia, in north-eastern Spain, has imposed an overnight curfew
  • The Netherlands entered a strict lockdown earlier this week
  • Germany has said it will restrict private gatherings to 10 people and close nightclubs from December 28. Soccer matches will be played behind closed doors
  • Portugal has ordered bars and nightclubs to shut from December 26, and made working from home obligatory until January 9.

However, in South Africa – where the Omicron variant was first identified – the government has ended Covid contact tracing, except for serious cluster outbreaks or prisons.

The health department announced that as most of the population had now been exposed to the coronavirus, the policy is now shifting from a containment strategy to one of mitigation including self-monitoring, mask wearing and social distancing.

The US earlier announced it would lift travel restrictions imposed on South Africa and seven other African countries because of concerns about the Omicron variant on December 31.

Travelers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi had been blocked since November 29.

America’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, warned earlier this week that Christmas travel would increase the spread of the variant even among the fully vaccinated.

However, thousands found their plans thrown into disarray as flights across the country were cancelled or delayed.

The worst affected US companies are Delta, United Airlines and American Airlines.

United Airlines said rising numbers of Omicron cases had “had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation”, adding that it was contacting impacted passengers in advance of them coming to the airport.

Overall, global airlines have cancelled more 4,700 flights scheduled to take off on Friday and Saturday.

In Australia, thousands of festive journeys were affected on December 24 with more than 100 domestic flights from Sydney and Melbourne to other cities cancelled.

More than 5.3 million people have died with coronavirus worldwide, according to America’s Johns Hopkins University. There have been 279 million confirmed cases.

Let’s Go, Brandon: Oregon Dad Pranks Joe Biden at White House Christmas Event

0

A caller has pranked President Joe Biden by dropping anti-Biden “Let’s go, Brandon” taunt into their chat during a White House Christmas event.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were hosting the festive call for families when a father told the president: “Let’s go, Brandon.”

Apparently unaware of the gibe, President Biden said he agreed.

The term, which has become a rallying cry for many conservatives, is code for a profane insult directed at Joe Biden.

The first couple were speaking virtually with children for a White House custom, tracking the journey of Santa’s sleigh via the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

During Christmas Eve’s event in the South Court Auditorium of the executive mansion, the Bidens spoke with a family from Oregon: Griffin, 11, Hunter, three, Piper, four, Penelope, two, and their father, Jared.

“I assume you’re dad,” the president said.

“Hi. Yes sir,” replied Jared.

“OK, Dad, what do you want for Christmas?” asked Presidnet Biden.

“Maybe a quiet night,” he replied laughing.

The president said: “You know, Dad, we have a Hunter, too. We have a son named Hunter and a grandson named Hunter.”

“I didn’t know you had a grandson named Hunter, that’s cool,” said Jared.

The president asked how old was Griffin.

“I’m 11,” Griffin said. He said he wanted a piano.

Jared interjected: “I was going to say he has to cut some trees down to get a piano!”

Hunter wanted a Nintendo Switch, Piper wanted a Barbie.

The president reminded the children to be in bed by nine o’clock otherwise Santa might not show up.

The first lady said: “Have a merry Christmas, have a wonderful Christmas.”

President Biden told Jared: “I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.”

The father replied: “Yeah, I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas as well. Merry Christmas and let’s go, Brandon.”

The president replied: “Let’s go, Brandon. I agree.”

There was silence.

President Biden added: “Hey, by the way, are you in Oregon? Where’s your home? I think we lost him.”

According to a recent Gallup poll, only 5% of voters who identify as Republican currently approve of the president’s performance.

That same poll shows President Biden’s overall approval rating has dipped to 43%.

How did ‘Let’s go, Brandon’ start?

It all began at the end of a televised Nascar stock car race in Talladega, Alabama, on October 2. NBC reporter Kelli Stavast was interviewing the winner, driver Brandon Brown, when members of the crowd in the grandstand behind them began chanting an obscenity directed at the president.

It was clearly picked up on the broadcast’s audio.

Whether by mistake or as an attempt to deflect from the swearing on live television, Kelli Stavast told Brandon Brown the crowd was cheering him on with chants of “Let’s go, Brandon.”

A meme was born.
