France Gall Dies from Cancer Aged 70

French singer France Gall has died at the age of 70.

The singer, who rose to fame in the 1960’s, was suffering from cancer for two years.

France Gall was taken to hospital near Paris last month for a severe infection.

She won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1965 representing Luxembourg with the song Wax Doll, Rag Doll (Poupée de cire, Poupée de son).

France Gall enjoyed more international success in 1987 with her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Ella, Elle l’a.

The singer was born in October 1947 into a musical family – her father was singer and songwriter Robert Gall, who penned songs for music legends Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour, among others.

France Gall was known for her childish smile and sweet voice and, in the words of Le Figaro website, “embodied the emancipation of French girls in the post-war era”. Her career spanned 50 years and Culture Minister Françoise Nyssen described her as “a timeless icon of French song”.

She was just 16 when her first single, Don’t Be So Stupid (Ne Sois Pas Si Bête), sold some 200,000 copies.

However, it was France Gall’s Eurovision victory with Poupée de cire – written by Serge Gainsbourg, one of the biggest figures in French popular music – that helped catapult her to fame and make her a star on France’s Yé-yé (yeah yeah) pop scene, so-called because of its nod to English music at the time.

Johnny Hallyday Dies Aged 74

France Gall’s death comes a month after the loss of another giant of French music, Johnny Hallyday – widely seen as the leader of the Yé-yé singers.

Her collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg later came under scrutiny, however, after she admitted she had been too young to fully understand the double meanings of some of his songs.

One of France Gall’s biggest hits was Les Sucettes (Lollipops), which tells the story of a girl who is “in paradise” every time “that little stick is on her tongue”.

Once she realized its full meaning, France Gall refused to perform the song and vowed never to work with Serge Gainsbourg again.

Her 1987 album Babacar, which included her tribute to jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald, saw her shoot to international fame.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted about France Gall’s death: “She leaves behind songs that everyone in France knows and set an example of a life devoted to others.”

France Gall had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer in the mid-1990s, not long after the death of her husband and fellow singer Michel Berger at the age of 44 in 1992. He had written the music and lyrics for her Babacar album.

She retired from her music career following the death of the eldest of her two children, Pauline, from cystic fibrosis in 1997.

France Gall spent the final years of her life working on various humanitarian projects.

Fire and Fury: Michael Wolff’s Donald Trump Book Goes on Sale Days Ahead Its Scheduled Release

Michael Wolff’s book, Fire and Fury : Inside the Trump White House, went on sale on January 5, days ahead of its scheduled release, despite President Donald Trump’s attempts to block its publication.

The book reveals how White House employees believed Donald Trump’s “mental powers were slipping” and how his team was shocked and horrified by his election win.

Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, and the author have both been the target of the president’s ire over the past few days. Steve Bannon cried when he lost his job last year, President Trump said and Michael Wolff had written a book “full of lies”, the president added.

The book also claims that Melania Trump was in tears of sadness on election night – though she has denied this and the president’s son, Donald Jr., engaged in “treasonous” behavior, according to former Trump aide Steve Bannon (claims denied by the Trumps).

On January 5, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told CNN that he had “no reason to question” President Trump’s mental fitness.

Rex Tillerson said Donald Trump was “not typical of presidents of the past”.

“I think that’s well recognized. That’s also though why the American people chose him,” the secretary of state said.

Camp David Summit 2018: President Donald Trump Meets GOP Leaders to Thrash Priorities

President Donald Trump and leading GOP members are meeting to thrash out their priorities for 2018.

According to recent reports, the two-day retreat at Camp David is expected to focus heavily on a strategy before crucial congressional elections in November.

The meeting takes place as a row continues between President Trump and Michael Wolff, the author of a new tell-all book about his presidency.

The Camp David summit begins two weeks before the end of President Trump’s first year in office. It will seek to tie up unfinished business by Republicans, who have rallied around Donald Trump during the release of Michael Wolff’s book.

President Trump said as he left for the Maryland retreat: “We have a lot of things to work on, a lot of things to accomplish.”

The agenda is not public, but various media outlets have said the talks could also look at immigration and the opioids crisis.

Bomb Cyclone: East Coast Temperatures Hit Record-Breaking Low

The US East Coast is shivering in a record-breaking freeze in the wake of a deadly “bomb cyclone” that dumped snow as far south as Florida.

In parts of US and Canada, temperatures were forecast to fall below -20F, with wind chill making it feel more like -90F on January 5.

In Canada, high winds have knocked out power for tens of thousands of residents in Nova Scotia.

Thousands of snow ploughs are clearing roads across the East Coast.

On January 5, the National Weather Service (NWS) predicted dangerously low temperatures moving into the weekend as frigid air lingering over the North Pole prowls towards the US mid-Atlantic region.

In Massachusetts, residents of Boston, which received over 1ft of snowfall, were clearing the streets with shovels.

It comes just days after a phenomenon described as a “bomb cyclone” brought heavy snowfall to a wide area along the East Coast, as well as hurricane-force winds.

Storm Eleanor Causes Power Outages and Affects Transport in Northern Europe

Giant waves caused by the storm saw freezing floodwaters inundate parts of the New England coast.

According to reports, the extreme weather has so far been linked to up to 19 deaths in the US and two more in Canada.

Four deaths were reported in traffic accidents in North and South Carolina. Further fatalities occurred in Wisconsin, Kentucky and Texas.

In Philadelphia, a car was unable to stop at a railway line at the bottom of a steep hill and was hit by a commuter train, killing a passenger in the vehicle.

In Virginia, a girl was fatally struck by a car while sledging, and a 75-year-old man was killed after being hit by a snow plough.

In Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where the temperature averaged 20F on January 4, a 13-year-old girl died and 35 others suffered carbon-monoxide poisoning in an apartment building. Seven of those treated were first responders.

The extreme weather caused travel chaos and led to the cancellation of thousands of flights on January 4 and 5.

Most flights have since resumed at airports in New York and Boston.

Experts say the so-called bomb cyclone storm drew moisture and strength from as far south as the Caribbean Sea.

New Hampshire’s Mount Washington, which boasts of having the “world’s worst weather”, was forecast to experience a wind chill temperature as low as -90F on January 5.

Law enforcement in Indiana issued a joke warrant for the arrest of the heroine in Disney movie Frozen, blaming her for the cold snap.

Afraid of Flying? Don’t Be, 2017 Just Proved to Be The Safest Year In Record

0

plane

Flying is not the ideal way of traveling for a significant proportion of the population (image: https://www.pexels.com/photo/flight-flying-plane-air-travel-59519/)

2017 has been the best year for the aviation industry for two reasons: it has been a year in which no passenger-carrying jets have crashed, and when most people have flown to destinations all around the world. If you are anything like 25 percent of the US population, however, it is likely that you will take this news with a pinch of salt. This is the proportion of citizens that has admitted to being afraid of flying, and with the media regularly showing horrific images of plane crashes, it is a surprise only a quarter of the American population feels this way.

While it is normal to feel slightly nervous about taking off and landing, anyone who has been on a rollercoaster will recall the butterflies they have felt in the stomach when the ride goes down, having a life-limiting phobia that stops you from traveling the world by plane is something you should address sooner or later. Otherwise, you will be stranded in your hometown or traveling only to places that are accessible by a land vehicle, and that is no fun!

Here, we share a few tips so that you can put your mind at rest ahead of you or your family boarding a plane.

Meditate

While meditation will not solve all your fear-related problems, it will help you see the bigger picture for you to cope better with your nervousness surrounding this accessible means of travel. Meditation is no magic tool to remove your fear of flying, but it is a resource you can use and will help you quiet your mind from all that fear talk. Do you find yourself playing the same thought over and over again in your mind before boarding a plane? Are you fidgety when flying? Do you anticipate horrible scenarios in the days before flying? If this is the case, it is time to give meditation some thought. All you will need to do is find a quiet area where you can relax and sit with your eyes closed while you feel your body inhale and exhale. This meditation app will help you with your practice.

Get legal representation

This might sound too formal, but you might be surprised at how much calmer getting legal representation might make you feel. In 2016, 217 people lost their lives in seven fatal crashes, compared to 471 in 2015. While air travel is getting safer with technology having contributed massively to the aviation industry, fatalities are still a reality, and some people are taking measures to ensure they are covered in the unlikely event of an air travel-related death or major accident. “The risks to civil aviation remain high as shown by the seriousness of some of the non-fatal accidents,” said Senior Aviation Consultant Adrian Young. Slack & Davis have represented hundreds of passengers who have been involved in complex aviation crashes.

Do some good research

If boarding a plane fills you with horror, there is something else you can do to calm your mind. That is doing as much research as possible about your fear of flying and trying to figure out where it stems from. Fear is an irrational thing, and we are all afraid of one thing or another, but we can usually find the reason behind this. If it makes you feel more at ease, you could even research the type of airplane that you will be flying on and gather facts around air travel and what allows for planes to be able to fly, etc. Knowledge is the best tool against fear, and this will be a beneficial exercise for you. While you won’t be able to control the plane in question and fly this to your destination, you can still learn as much as possible about the act of flying and hopefully realise that air travel is still the safest mode of transportation there is.

Take a course

Spending your hard-earned cash on combating your fear of flying might not be an ideal scenario for you right now, but experts in the field say this is one of the best methods to get over the uncomfortable feeling you get every time you are about to board a plane. These courses are available all over the country, and they consist of workshops that will help you feel at ease with the idea of air travel. Facts surrounding the aviation industry will be given to you in an effort to appease your worries, and these will be delivered by experts with years of experience in the field. “Fear of flying affects all ages, all levels of wealth, all levels of flying experience” claims the Fear of Flying Clinic, and with this irrational behaviour manifesting itself at any time in our lives, a course to combat it will be one of the best investments you ever make.

Whether you need to fly for business, leisure or to visit family and friends in a faraway destination, if fear of flying is stopping you from taking any of these trips, it is time to put a stop to it and become confident in your abilities to remain calm while up in the air. Embracing your fear and enjoying the ride will not only allow you to visit new destinations and revisit old ones, but it will also make you feel more confident and able to conquer any other challenges that may come your way.

Living in fear is not a way to live, and you know it. Start 2018 by confronting your deepest worries surrounding air travel so that you can broaden your horizons and live a life beyond your wildest dreams. You are entitled to a life based on freedom and so are your friends and family. If you would like to see how this is done, try the tips above to overcome your fear of flying this year. You will never look back.

Is Solar Power Really The Best Way To Generate Clean Energy?

Renewable energy is a hot topic at the moment and more countries are starting to drive toward the end goal of generating all of their energy from renewable sources. A huge amount of the research is going into wind and solar energy and that’s what most people tend to use on their houses if they want to generate their own power, but what about the other sources? The research into solar and wind energy is mostly directed at efficiency because there are a lot of downfalls. If you live in a country that isn’t particularly sunny or windy it’s going to be patchy. Relying on something completely out of your control to generate your power isn’t ideal which is why some of these alternative energy sources are a lot better.

Hydroelectricity

dam

Pixabay

Hydroelectricity is a fairly well established source of renewable energy. It works by putting turbines in a dam which are then turned by the flow of the river. The initial costs are obviously going to be fairly high when compared with wind turbines or solar energy but after that large outlay, it’s a lot cheaper. The cost of generating hydroelectric power is around 3 times cheaper than the cost of solar panels and you can get a far larger yield out of it as well.

Bioenergy

Bioenergy isn’t something that is used all that much but it has the benefit of recycling materials as well as producing clean energy. Bioenergy – Renewable energy uses waste in a lot of different ways to produce energy. A large amount of it comes from farms but there are all sorts of sources. Biodiesel was one of the options for clean cars but it hasn’t taken off as of yet. Bioenergy is one of the only clean forms of energy that can directly replace fossil fuels so we can still make use of those power plants without too many expensive modifications.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is a clever way of producing power using the temperature difference above ground and below ground. Like hydroelectricity, there are quite significant costs initially because you need to bury a lot of the equipment below ground. However, it doesn’t require much maintenance afterwards and it’s a lot cheaper than solar energy. It works out about the same price as wind energy but you don’t have to deal with the added issue of people that don’t want wind turbines near their house because it’s an eyesore.

Coal

fire

Pexels

Coal is obviously a terrible source of energy, but only in the way that we use it right now. It sounds like an impossibility but there is such a thing as clean coal. By using new equipment that filters out a lot of the pollutants so they can be buried deep underground, it is actually possible to burn coal without damaging the environment. It would take a lot of modification to update the power plants but once it’s done, the energy produced would still be about half the cost of solar energy.

Solar and wind energy are still valuable sources of clean energy but these options are often cheaper and more reliable.

Steve Bannon Book: Donald Trump’s Lawyers Issue Cease-And Desist Notice

After Steve Bannon announced his tell-all book, President Donald Trump’s lawyers have written to his former strategist, saying he has violated a non-disclosure agreement.

The cease-and-desist notice accuses Steve Bannon of defaming President Trump in speaking to author Michael Wolff.

Michael Wolff’s forthcoming tell-all book describes Donald Trump as being unprepared for the president job.

The 64-year-old writer is a former columnist for New York magazine and Vanity Fair. He also wrote a biography of media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

His book is reportedly based on more than 200 interviews.

President Trump responded by saying Steve Bannon had “lost his mind” after losing his White House position.

The president’s lawyers said Steve Bannon had broken his employment agreement by speaking to Michael Wolff about Donald Trump and his family, “disclosing confidential information” and “making disparaging statements and in some cases outright defamatory statements to Mr. Wolff about Mr. Trump, his family members, and the Company”, the letter said.

Steve Bannon Fired as White House Chief Strategist

Steve Bannon Removed from National Security Council

Donald Trump Jr. Releases Private Twitter Correspondence with WikiLeaks

Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House makes many explosive claims, including that Steve Bannon thought a meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a group of Russians was “treasonous”. The Trump team was shocked and horrified by his election win and Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, was in tears on election night. Donald Trump was angry that A-list stars had snubbed his inauguration and the new president “found the White House to be vexing and even a little scary”.  The book also claims that Ivanka Trump had a plan with her husband, Jared Kushner, that she would be “the first woman president”. Ivanka Trump mocked her dad’s “comb-over” hairstyle and “often described the mechanics behind it to friends”.

The book also alleges that former UK PM Tony Blair told Donald Trump during a meeting in February 2017 that the British intelligence services may have been spying on him and his campaign, according to a report in The Times.

The Times says Tony Blair was hoping to get a job advising Donald Trump on the Middle East.

A spokesperson for Tony Blair told The Times that the allegations were a “total fabrication: and said the former prime minister had not suggested himself as Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy.

In March 2017, then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer told journalists UK intelligence services could have been involved in an alleged spying operation on Trump Tower in New York. GCHQ said the allegation was “nonsense”.

According to New York magazine, which first published the extracts from Michael Wolff’s book, the author was able to take advantage of the Trump administration’s political inexperience to gain an unusual amount of insight.

“There were no ground rules placed on his access, and he was required to make no promises about how he would report on what he witnessed,” it says.

Michael Wolff said he was able to take up “something like a semi-permanent seat on a couch in the West Wing” following the president’s inauguration.

In a statement on January 3, President Trump said: “Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency.

“When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”

“Steve was a staffer who worked for me after I had already won the nomination by defeating seventeen candidates, often described as the most talented field ever assembled in the Republican party,” the president continued.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders described the book as “filled with false and misleading accounts from individuals who have no access or influence with the White House”.

“Participating in a book that can only be described as a trashy tabloid fiction exposes their sad desperate attempts at relevancy.”

Steve Bannon, the president’s former chief strategist, was considered a key player in the Trump White House and helped shape Donald Trump’s “America First” campaign message before he left his post in August.

In April, President Trump had declined to affirm that Steve Bannon still had his support, removing him from his elevated role on the crucial National Security Council.

He then appeared to downplay Steve Bannon’s role, declaring in a New York Post interview: “I’m my own strategist.”

After leaving the White House, Steve Bannon returned to his role as the head of the right-wing Breitbart News website, where he said he planned to help the Trump administration as a “wingman outside”.

Donald Trump reportedly spoke to Steve Bannon as recently as December 13, the day of the special Senate election in Alabama that saw the defeat of Republican Roy Moore, whom Bannon supported.

Storm Eleanor Causes Power Outages and Affects Transport in Northern Europe

Most of northern Europe, including France and Germany and the UK, has been battered by winter storm Eleanor leaving tens of thousands of homes without power and affecting transport.

In France, a skier died in the Alps and 15 others were injured elsewhere in the country, four of them seriously.

A train was blown off its tracks in Switzerland, leaving several people with minor injuries. One person was hit by a falling tree in the Netherlands.

Wind gusts may reach 124mph.

In northern France, Eleanor cut power to more than 200,000 households and it is set to move to other regions throughout the day, including Corsica.

Air travel was also disrupted in the capital, Paris, and in the east of the country.

In Paris, the Eiffel Tower was closed because of the strong winds. The French capital’s parks have also been closed until the storm dies down because of worries over falling tree branches.

A skier was killed by a falling tree in Morillon, in the Haute-Savoie region of eastern France.

In Germany, the storm – named Burglind there – has swept over much of the country. It packed gusts of more than 75mph in the west of the country and led to transport disruption, reports say.

Switzerland has also been badly hit, with some 14,000 homes without power. The high winds left several people stranded in a ski lift in St Gallen canton, overturned a light airplane in Stans and snapped the 42ft high Christmas tree in the capital Bern, Reuters reports.

Meanwhile, record wind gusts of 122mph were recorded on Pilatus Peak near the Swiss city of Lucerne, broadcaster SRF reported.

Belgium was put on “orange” alert, the third of four warning levels, with officials urging people to be cautious when going out because of tree branches and other flying objects.

In the Netherlands, gusts of more than 68mph were recorded as hundreds of flights were cancelled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.

Several main roads and train lines were also closed.

Dutch authorities have, for the first time, shut all five major sea barriers to prevent flooding, as large areas of the country are below sea level.

In the UK thousands of homes are without power and travel has been disrupted after Storm Eleanor hit there.

Specialists recorded gusts reaching 100mph overnight with a weather yellow warning still in place for Wales, England, most of Northern Ireland and parts of southern Scotland.

In the Republic of Ireland, 97mph gusts were recorded, and there was flooding, travel disruption and damage to buildings.

Donald Trump Responds to Kim Jong-un’s Nuclear Button Threaten

0

President Donald Trump has responded to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un saying his nuclear button is “much bigger” and “more powerful”.

In a tweet, the president warned: “North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”

President Trump’s tweet is the latest contribution to the bickering, increasingly personalized feud between the nuclear-armed leaders.

Earlier this week, Kim Jong-un threatened that his nuclear launch button was “always on my table”.

North Korea Crisis: Kim Jong-un Offers Threats and Hopes in New Year Speech

Donald Trump’s Tweet Calls Kim Jong-un Short and Fat

Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump’s unorthodox words sent social media into a frenzy.

It ended a quick-fire day of tweeting that included taking credit for a lack of airplane crashed, announcing awards for “corrupt media”, and threatening to pull aid from Palestinians who do not show “appreciation or respect”.

President Trump’s latest comment states the obvious: any US president has immediate access to the nuclear codes and the US has the world’s biggest nuclear arsenal.

Many people online have expressed alarm at the apparently light-hearted use of nuclear threats by world leaders.

However, Donald Trump’s supporters have defended him, saying his comments are both factually accurate and show American strength and resolve.

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump had a long-running spat with Marco Rubio over the size of his hands.

At the time, he insisted: “He referred to my hands – ‘if they are small, something else must be small’. I guarantee you there is no problem. I guarantee”.

This connection was not missed by social media users.

Time’s Up: Hollywood Stars Launch Initiative Against Harassment

More than 300 Hollywood A-list women, including actresses, writers and directors, have launched Time’s Up project to help fight harassment in the film industry and other workplaces.

The Time’s Up initiative was announced via a full-page advert printed in the New York Times.

The project is described as a “unified call for change from women in entertainment for women everywhere”.

It comes in the wake of abuse allegations by high-profile actresses against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

In a solidarity letter published on its website, Time’s Up says the “struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard” must end.

It added: “Time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly.”

The letter, which is aimed at “every woman… who has had to fend off s**ual advances”, goes on to say that such harassment can often continue because “perpetrators and employers never face any consequences”.

#MeToo: Matt Lauer Fired from NBC News over Assault Allegations

The Time’s Up campaign, which is backed by hundreds of actresses including Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Eva Longoria and Emma Stone, has already raised more than $13 million of its $15 million target.

The funds raised will be used as legal support for both female and male victims of harassment at work.

The project is aimed primarily at those who are unable to meet the payments to defend themselves, such as agricultural or factory workers, caretakers and waitresses.

The Time’s Up initiative also calls for “gender inequality and the imbalance of power” to be addressed, stressing the need for more women to gain positions of authority and parity of pay.

Last month, Time magazine named “the Silence Breakers” – women and men who spoke out against abuse and harassment – as its “Person of the Year” for 2017.

2017 also saw the rise of the #MeToo hashtag, which inspired a global movement of women and men to share their stories of abuse and harassment.

The #MeToo hashtag gained momentum after actress Alyssa Milano took to Twitter to ask victims of assault to come forward in a show of solidarity.

Between October and December 2017, #MeToo was used on Twitter and Facebook more than six million times.

North Korea Crisis: Kim Jong-un Offers Threats and Hopes in New Year Speech

In a New Year speech, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said a nuclear launch button is “always on my table” and warned the US it will never be able to start a war.

Kim Jong-un said the entire US was within range of North Korean nuclear weapons, adding: “This is reality, not a threat.”

However, he also offered a potential olive branch to South Korea, suggesting he was “open to dialogue”.

Kim Jong-un also announced that North Korea may also send a team to the Winter Olympics in Seoul.

When asked by reporters to respond to Kim Jong-un’s latest threats, President Donald Trump said: “We’ll see, we’ll see.”

President Trump was speaking at the sidelines of New Year’s Eve celebrations at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

North Korea has come under increased criticism and sanctions over the past year because of its nuclear weapons program and repeated testing of conventional missiles.

During the time, North Korea claimed to have a fully deployable nuclear weapon, though there is still some international skepticism about its true capacity to carry out such an attack.

In his televised speech, Kim Jong-un re-emphasized his focus on the weapons program, but implied the country still has a few stages left to go before achieving its ambitions. North Korea must “mass-produce nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles and speed up their deployment”, he said.

US Wants New Sanctions Against North Korea Including Freeze on Kim Jong-un’s Assets

Kin Jong-un also said they would not use their weapons unless they felt that peace was threatened.

While his language against the United States remained tough, Kim Jong-un did not employ his typically antagonistic tone when speaking about his neighbors in South Korea.

He said: “The year 2018 is a significant year for both the North and the South, with the North marking the 70th anniversary of its birth and the South hosting the Winter Olympics.

“We should melt the frozen North-South relations, thus adorning this meaningful year as a year to be specially recorded in the history of the nation.”

A spokesperson for South Korean President Moon Hae-in said their office had “always stated our willingness to talk with North Korea at anytime and anywhere”.

“We hope the two Koreas will sit down and find a solution to lower tensions and establish peace on the Korean peninsula.”

Kim Jong-un also said he would also consider sending a delegation to the Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February – a gesture which South Korea has previously suggested would be welcome.

“North Korea’s participation in the Winter Games will be a good opportunity to show unity of the people and we wish the Games will be a success,” he said.

“Officials from the two Koreas may urgently meet to discuss the possibility.”

Lee Hee-beom, the president of the PyeongChang Games’ organizing committee, told South Korea’s news agency Yonhap he was delighted to hear of the potential participation.

He said: “[The committee] enthusiastically welcomes it. It’s like a New Year’s gift.”

The only two North Korean athletes who qualified for the Games are figure skaters Ryom Tae-Ok and Kim Ju-Sik.

Although North Korea has missed the official deadline to confirm their participation, the skaters could still compete with an invitation by the International Olympic Committee.

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in last month suggested delaying an annual joint military drill with US troops until after the Games. North Korea usually denounces any such exercises as a rehearsal for war.

Iran Protests: Revolutionary Guards Threaten Crackdown

After three days of anti-government protests in Iran, demonstrators have been warned by the Revolutionary Guards that they will face the nation’s “iron fist” if political unrest continues.

The protests erupted over falling living standards.

However, a Revolutionary Guards commander said the protests had degenerated into people chanting political slogans and burning public property.

The recent protests are the biggest show of dissent since huge pro-reform rallies in 2009. There are reports of two deaths.

In the cities of Khoramabad, Zanjan and Ahvaz there were calls for the removal or death of Iran’s Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutions Guards Corp is a powerful force with ties to the country’s supreme leader, and is dedicated to preserving the country’s Islamic system.

Brigadier-General Esmail Kowsari told the ISNA news agency: “If people came into the streets over high prices, they should not have chanted those slogans and burned public property and cars.”

The interior minister has also warned the public that protesters will be held accountable.

Are We Safe? Key Facts About The Iran Nuclear Deal People Won’t Tell You

Protests began in the north-eastern city of Mashhad on December 28 and spread to other major cities on December 29.

A small demonstration in the capital Tehran grew to several thousand people on December 30, and students clashed with police. The protests also became violent in several other towns.

Iran is a key provider of military support to the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. It is also accused of providing arms to Houthi rebels fighting a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, which it denies, and is an ally of Lebanon’s powerful Shia movement Hezbollah.

The Iranian authorities are blaming anti-revolutionaries and agents of foreign powers for the outbreak.

Also on December 30, thousands of pro-government demonstrators turned out for pre-arranged rallies to mark the eighth anniversary of the suppression of the 2009 street protests.

The US has led international support for the protesters.

President Donald Trump tweeted: “Oppressive regimes cannot endure forever, and the day will come when the Iranian people will face a choice. The world is watching!”

Iran’s foreign ministry called earlier comments from President Trump and other US officials “opportunistic and deceitful”.

Eric Garner’s Death: Black Lives Matter Activist Erica Garner Dies Aged 27

0

Eric Garner’s daughter, Erica, who became a civil rights activist against police brutality after the death of her father in 2014, has died aged 27.

Three years ago, a video of Eric Garner, in a police chokehold complaining he could not breathe, sparked national protests.

Erica Garner became a prominent member of the Black Lives Matter movement following her father’s death.

She had been in a coma since December 23 after suffering a heart attack triggered by an asthma attack.

Erica Garner’s official Twitter account, being run by her family, said she had suffered major brain damage from a lack of oxygen.

A tweet posted to her account said: “When you report this you remember she was human: mother, daughter, sister, aunt. Her heart was bigger than the world. It really really was.”

“She cared when most people wouldn’t have. She was good. She only pursued right, no matter what. No one gave her justice.”

Eric Garner death: Thousands protest in Staten Island over police chockhold death

Forty-three-year-old father-of-six Eric Garner was detained by police for allegedly selling loose cigarettes on Staten Island in July 2014.

Eric Garner also had asthma, and was filmed telling officers multiple times: “I can’t breathe.”

His words became a rallying cry for Black Lives Matter protesters, and the video of the arrest made headlines around the world.

Eric Garner’s death was ruled a homicide by medical examiners, but a grand jury did not charge any arresting officers in the case.

In a 2015 civil lawsuit, New York City agreed to pay $5.9 million to Eric Garner’s family.

Erica Garner was a mother-of-two, and had a son in August whom she named after her father.

Egypt: Ex-President Mohammed Morsi Sentenced to Three Years in Jail for Insulting Judiciary

Former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has been sentenced to three years in prison for insulting the judiciary.

Mohammed Morsi already holds other jail terms including a life sentence.

The ousted leader is awaiting a retrial on a separate charge of conspiring to commit terrorist acts, for which he was previously sentenced to death. The death sentence was lifted on appeal.

Mohammed Morsi was overthrown by the military in 2013 and has been detained since. He is currently in a high-security prison.

He has also been fined a million Egyptian pounds ($56,000) relating to a speech given in 2013.

Mohamed Morsi Death Sentence Overturned by Egypt’s Court of Cassation

On December 30, other 17 co-defendants, including fines for political blogger Alaa Abdel Fattah and broadcaster Tawfiq Okasha, have been sentenced.

Mohammed Morsi has previously rejected the authority of the courts, and in his first trial shouted from the dock that he was being “forcibly detained”.

Since then the former president has been forced to sit in soundproof glass cages in courtrooms, which officials say are designed to prevent him disrupting proceedings.

Mohammed Morsi was overthrown by the military following mass protests a year after he took office as Egypt’s first democratically elected leader.

The authorities subsequently launched a crackdown on supporters of Mohammed Morsi and the Islamist movement to which he belongs, the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood.

South Korea Seizes Ship Suspected of Supplying Oil to North Korea

0

South Korea has seized a Hong Kong-registered ship last month suspected of supplying oil to North Korea in breach of international sanctions.

According to officials, the Lighthouse Winmore had secretly transferred 600 tonnes of refined oil to a North Korean ship.

A UN Security Council resolution bans ship-to-ship transfers of any goods destined for North Korea.

The revelations came as China denied claims by President Donald Trump it had allowed oil shipments to North Korea.

to The ship entered Yeosu port in South Korea on October 11 to load up with refined oil and left for Taiwan four days later, Yonhap news agency reported.

However, instead of going to Taiwan it transferred the oil to a North Korean ship and three other vessels in international waters on October 19, South Korean officials were quoted as saying.

This defies a UN Security Council resolution imposed on September 11.

North Korea Describes Latest UN Sanctions as “Act of War”

According to the New York Times, the transfer was captured in US satellite photo, released by the US Treasury in November, although the Lighthouse Winmore was not named by the Treasury.

According to South Korean officials, the Lighthouse Winmore was seized when it returned to Yeosu in November and remains in South Korea.

There is no evidence for this, as although the Lighthouse Winmore is Hong Kong-flagged, it was leased by a Taiwanese company, Billions Bunker Group Corp.

Taiwan’s Presidential Office said the company that chartered the ship was not incorporated in Taiwan, but did not say whether the firm’s owner or officials are Taiwanese.

The Chinese government said the accusations against it were “not consistent with the facts”.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said: “China has never allowed Chinese enterprises nor individuals to violate UN Security Council resolutions imposed on the DPRK.”

China handles about 90% of North Korea’s foreign trade.

There has been increasing suspicion in Washington that Chinese ships have been secretly transferring petroleum to North Korean vessels at sea.

China has continued to deny this, saying it fully enforces UN resolutions against North Korea.

On December 28, President Donald Trump tweeted he was “very disappointed” with China, which he said had been “caught red-handed”.

The tweet followed a report on the issue in South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo.

President Trump has previously threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea if it launches a nuclear attack. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has described President Trump as “mentally deranged”.

Cairo Attacks: Nine Killed Outside Coptic Church and Store

Nine people have been killed in Egypt during two attacks on Coptic Christians in Helwan district, south of Cairo, the interior ministry has said.

According to the interior ministry statement, 6 civilians and a policeman died when a gunman tried to storm a church but was intercepted and arrested.

It said the gunman had previously attacked a Coptic-owned shop in the same area, killing two brothers.

The interior ministry revised an earlier account given by the health ministry.

The initial report said 12 were dead, and suggested there were two attackers. It said one had been killed, and the other fled but was later captured.

More than 100 Christians have been killed in Egypt in 2017, with most attacks claimed by the local branch of ISIS.

Security forces have reinforced checkpoints in place around Cairo in response to the attacks.

Earlier this week, they announced plans to protect festivities around the New Year and, on January 7, Coptic Christmas. They include the deployment of rapid-reaction forces, combat troops and jamming equipment.

Egypt Church Attacks: President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi Declares Three-Month State of Emergency

Egypt bombs ISIS targets in Libya following killings of 21 Coptic Christians

According to the interior ministry statement, the first attack on December 29 took place at a household appliances shop. Then the attacker headed to the Saint Mina Coptic church, where he attempted “to trespass the church’s perimeter security”.

It said that seven people, including an auxiliary policeman, had been killed and four injured as the gunman opened fire at the church.

The attacker also had an explosive device, a machine gun and 150 rounds, it added.

The ministry suggested he was known to security services, saying he was “one of the most active terrorist elements and he carried out several terrorist attacks which resulted in the martyrdom of a number of policemen and civilians”.

However, the interior ministry account contradicts earlier ones from officials and witnesses, who spoke of a higher death toll and more than one attacker.

Video footage has also emerged appearing to show one gunman lying dead at the scene and another alleged attacker fleeing in a red car.

Egypt is a Muslim-majority country and its Christian minority – mostly members of the Coptic Orthodox Church – make up around 10% of the population.

Donald Trump Believes He Will Be Treated Fairly By Robert Mueller’s Investigation

During an interview with the New York Times, President Donald Trump has said he believes he will be treated “fairly” by the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the US election.

There has been tension between the White House and the inquiry and President Trump has had to deny planning to fire lead investigator Robert Mueller.

The president again denied there had been any collusion with Russian officials.

He said he did not know how long the inquiry would take, but it had made the US “look very bad”.

The interview took place at the president’s golf club in West Palm Beach in Florida.

President Trump insisted he had the right to begin or end any justice department investigations.

He said of Robert Mueller, the special counsel: “I think he’s going to be fair.”

President Donald Trump Denies He Is Planning to Fire Robert Mueller

Robert Mueller Accused of Unlawfully Obtaining Emails

According to the New York Times, President Trump had denied 16 times during the interview that there had been any collusion with Russia.

US intelligence agencies believe Russia tried to tip the presidential election in favor of Donald Trump – a charge denied by both Moscow and the president.

The president has labeled Robert Mueller’s investigation a “witch hunt” while other Republicans accuse it of bias.

Donald Trump repeated his allegation that Democrats had invented the issue “as a hoax, as a ruse, as an excuse for losing an election”.

He said he was not concerned about when the inquiry would finish as he had nothing to hide.

However, the president added: “It makes the country look very bad, and it puts the country in a very bad position. So the sooner it’s worked out, the better it is for the country.”

He repeated his comments from May that the investigation was “hunting the US terribly”.

President Trump said the matter had angered his supporters, adding: “My base is stronger than it’s ever been.”

Liberia Elections 2017: Soccer Legend George Weah Wins Presidency

Former African soccer star George Weah has been elected as Liberia’s president.

With nearly all ballots from December 26 run-off vote counted, George Weah is well ahead of his opponent, Vice-President Joseph Boakai, with more than 60% of the vote.

As news of George Weah’s victory emerged, his supporters began celebrating in the capital Monrovia.

George Weah will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female president, in Liberia’s first democratic handover in decades.

After the results were announced, he tweeted: “My fellow Liberians, I deeply feel the emotion of all the nation.

“I measure the importance and the responsibility of the immense task which I embrace today. Change is on.”

George Weah starred at top-flight European soccer clubs Paris St-Germain (PSG) and AC Milan, before ending his career in England with brief stays at Chelsea and Manchester City.

He is the only African to have won both FIFA World Player of the Year and the prestigious Ballon D’Or.

Ebola 2014: Liberia holds postponed elections

George Weah, 51, entered politics after his retirement from the game in 2002 and is currently a senator in Liberia’s parliament.

His former club, PSG, congratulated him on Twitter.

Liberia, founded by freed American slaves in the 19th Century, has not had a smooth transfer of power from one elected president to another since 1944.

George Weah won the first round of the presidential election in October with 38.4% of the vote, compared with the 28.8% won by second-placed Joseph Boakai, 73. The failure of any candidate to secure an outright majority forced the run-off.

On December 28, the National Elections Commission (NEC) said that with 98.1% of the run-off vote counted, George Weah had won 61.5% of the vote while Joseph Boakai was far behind with 38.5%.

Legal challenges delayed the vote to replace Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and turnout was low – put at 56% by election officials.

However, election observers have praised the conduct of the poll.

More than two million people were eligible to cast their ballots from Liberia’s population of 4.6 million.

St Petersburg Store Explosion Injures at Least 10

0

An explosion at a store in Sankt Petersburg, Russia, has injured at least ten people.

According to officials, one person was said to be in serious condition after the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED).

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the explosion, at the Perekrestok supermarket chain on December 27, as a terrorist act.

No group has said it carried out the attack, which officials say produced a blast equivalent to 200g (7oz) of TNT.

Russia’s investigative committee said the home-made device was packed with lethal components.

St Petersburg Subway Explosion Kills 11

The explosion took place in an area of the supermarket that housed lockers for storing bags.

The property was quickly evacuated and there were no reports of a fire, but images circulating on social media in Russia showed extensive damage in an area of the store close to the tills.

President Putin commented on the explosion at a military awards ceremony on December 28. Officials had earlier suggested the attack was being treated as attempted murder.

Earlier this month, Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump spoke by phone after information provided by the CIA helped Russian security services foil an attack on St Petersburg’s Kazan cathedral.

At the time, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that a group had been planning attacks at a number of sites. Several people were reportedly detained.

In April, an explosion on the St Petersburg subway system killed at least 13 people and injured more than 50 others.

Staying On Top Of Business Finances Like The Pros

0

Running a business presents many different challenges. But maintaining good financial health is easily the most important. Without money, the entire venture will crash and burn. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of entrepreneurs ever truly master this factor. This is the chief reason why so many fail.

Entrepreneurs can learn a lot from analyzing other successful business owners. This is especially true when it comes to the financial management. Adopt the five simple points below, and you’ll be running the venture like a pro in no time.

Don’t leave it to chance. The best business owners share many traits, and an attention to detail and control is up there. Tackling situations without that tight grasp only increases the chances of problems surfacing. Nowadays, monitoring all elements is easy thanks to accounting and tax software and other key tools. Likewise, tracking overheads to see where money is being wasted should give you a far better shot at ongoing success. After all, kicking the bad habits ASAP is a habit shared by all modern success stories.

Don’t be afraid to borrow. Cash flow problems often stop businesses from reaching their goals. This is because the slower progress sees the company fall behind its competitors. Customers won’t stay loyal if you don’t give them a reason too, which will spell disaster. Services like Businesslineof.credit allow you to acquire extra funds in a responsible manner. With the door to expansion and growth fully open, the immediate and long-term revenue will look far greater. This should result in increased financial stability too.

Don’t waste time. We’ve all heard the phrase that time is money, and it’s true. Therefore, one of the most valuable skills you could ever master revolves around efficiency. Upgrading the communication links will make the team and money work harder. Investments into automated services ranging from stock management to client care will work well. Ultimately, you do not have the same level of resources as those big companies. Therefore, using yours in the best manner is crucial. Do not forget it.

Don’t spend for the sake of it. Many entrepreneurs make investments based on preconceived ideas of what seems right. In truth, the only moves worth making are the ones focused on maximized profits. For starters, you can find out about things you don’t need on a PC at Computershopper.com. Meanwhile, price comparisons on energy rates and ongoing services can see you reduce needless spending. When combined with cutting the gimmicks and other superfluous items, the business will run smoother than ever.

Don’t buy when you can rent. We live in a world where ownership is seen as essential. In business, though, successful asset management revolves largely around making money work harder. In many cases, it’s far simpler and more affordable to rent things. Not only does this ease the initial strain on your pocket, but it allows you to stay up to date with crucial features. The depreciation of vehicles, machines, and other tech features is very high. As such, your immediate and long-term situations will thank you for opening your eyes to rentals and running contracts. Purchasing assets is still useful at times. As with everything, finding the balance is key.

#MeToo: Corey Lewandowski Accused of Assault

0

President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, has been accused of assault by singer Joy Villa.

According to Joy Villa, Corey Lewandowski hit her twice on the backside during an event in Washington last month.

The singer told media she spoke to the police on Christmas Eve, having been persuaded to launch a formal complaint by friends.

Corey Lewandowski has not responded to media’s requests for comment.

The accusations are the latest in a long line of harassment and assault claims linked to celebrities, politicians and companies, which have gathered pace in the past year, particularly following the downfall of film producer Harvey Weinstein.

According to Associated Press, Joy Villa said: “I was initially fearful to come forward with this.”

She said she did not want to embarrass Corey Lewandowski’s family or hers.

Corey Lewandowski: Donald Trump’s Campaign Manager Charged with Assaulting Journalist

Joy Villa, who is a vocal Trump supporter and wore a “Make America Great Again” dress to the 2017 Grammy Awards, was at a gathering at Trump International Hotel when she posed for a photograph with Corey Lewandowski, whom, she says, she had never met before.

The singer alleges Corey Lewandowski hit her once on the buttocks, and when she asked him to stop and joked about reporting him for harassment, he did it again. She said he laughed, adding: “I work in the private sector.”

Joy Villa said the hard slaps felt “disgusting and shocking and demeaning”.

Politico first reported on the incident last week, saying they had talked to a witness who spoke out before Joy Villa did.

Joy Villa has previously said she is considering running for Congress – and President Donald Trump has tweeted his support.

Donald Trump fired Corey Lewandowski as campaign manager in June 2016.

Earlier last year, Corey Lewandowski was charged with battery after allegedly yanking a female reporter out of Donald Trump’s way after a campaign event. The charges were later dropped.

Barack Obama Interviewed by Prince Harry

0

Former President Barack Obama has been interviewed by Prince Harry on BBC Radio 4.

Prince Harry, the fifth in line to the UK’s throne, is one of several prominent figures who are guest-editing Today program over Christmas period.

Barack Obama warned against the irresponsible use of social media and how such actions were distorting people’s understanding of complex issues, and spreading misinformation.

The former president expressed concern about a future where facts are discarded and people only read and listen to things that reinforce their own views.

He said: “One of the dangers of the internet is that people can have entirely different realities. They can be cocooned in information that reinforces their current biases.

“The question has to do with how do we harness this technology in a way that allows a multiplicity of voices, allows a diversity of views, but doesn’t lead to a Balkanization of society and allows ways of finding common ground.”

President Donald Trump is a prolific user of Twitter, but Barack Obama did not mention him by name.

Donald Trump has been accused of overusing Twitter and following only a narrow range of users, though he maintains it allows him to connect directly with the American people.

Invictus Games 2018: Prince Harry Announces Sydney as Event Host

Barack Obama suggested face-to-face contact would help counteract extreme views.

He said: “Social media is a really powerful tool for people of common interests to convene and get to know each other and connect.

“But then it’s important for them to get offline, meet in a pub, meet at a place of worship, meet in a neighborhood and get to know each other.

“Because the truth is that on the internet, everything is simplified and when you meet people face-to-face it turns out they’re complicated.”

The former president added: “It’s hard, being in the public eye is unpleasant in a lot of ways. It is challenging in a lot of ways.

“Your loved ones are made vulnerable in ways that might not have been true 20 years ago or 30 years ago.

“So it is a sacrifice that I think everybody has to be at peace with when they decide to go into politics. But, ultimately, I think the rewards of bringing about positive change in this world make it worthwhile.”

Barack Obama pays tribute to the support of his family, especially his wife Michelle, describing how glad he is that she was “my partner throughout that whole process”.

He compared his time in office to being a relay runner: “If you ran hard, you did your best and you were able to pass that baton successfully and the world was a little better then you had done your job.”

He cited ObamaCare – ensuring more people can afford basic healthcare – as a major achievement.

“What an enormous blessing it is to say that 20 million Americans have health insurance that didn’t have it before.”

Prince Harry’s program focused on issues such as the armed forces, mental health, youth crime and climate change.

Brazil Expels Venezuela’s Charge D’Affaires

Brazil has expelled Venezuela’s charge d’affaires Gerardo Delgado.

It came days after Venezuela’s decision to expel the Brazilian ambassador to Caracas, Ruy Pereira.

Venezuela said Brazil had acted illegally in impeaching its former left-wing president, Dilma Rousseff.

On December 23, Venezuela also expelled Canada’s charge d’affaires, accusing him of interfering in internal affairs.

On December 25, Canada announced that Venezuela’s Ambassador Wilmer Barrientos Fernández, who was already abroad, would not be allowed to return.

Venezuela’s charge d’affaires in Ottawa, Ángel Herrera, was also asked to leave.

Relations with Brazil have deteriorated since President Michel Temer took office in 2016, following Dilma Rousseff’s dismissal by Congress for fiscal irregularities.

Canada Expels Venezuela’s Ambassador and Charge D’Affaires

Venezuela Expels Brazilian Ambassador and Canadian Charge D’Affaires

Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro described her impeachment as “a right-wing coup”.

On December 23, the head of Venezuela’s powerful Constituent Assembly, Delcy Rodriguez, said that “diplomatic relations with Brazil will not be restored until the government reinstates the constitutional order it has effectively broken”.

The Brazilian government said the move showed “once again the authoritarian nature of President Maduro’s administration”.

Brazil and Canada have both become outspoken critics of President Maduro.

They accuse Nicolas Maduro’s socialist government of harassing the opposition and violating human rights.

Canada imposed sanctions on senior Venezuelan officials a few months ago.

Brazil and Canada were among many countries critical of President Maduro’s decision to convene a Constituent Assembly, which effectively replaced the opposition-controlled National Assembly.

The announcement prompted mass street protests, which killed more than 120 people in four months.

Venezuela’s opposition boycotted the poll in July and also held an unofficial referendum in which they said more than seven million Venezuelans had voted against the constituent assembly.

Nicolas Maduro’s six-year term ends in 2019. He is due to run for re-election in 2018.
