Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi Appears in Court on Video

Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been seen for the first time since she was detained in a military coup, after she appeared in court via video link.

Aung San Suu Kyi, 75, appeared to be in “good health” and asked to see her legal team, her lawyers say.

Two new charges were announced against Aung San Suu Kyi, who was arrested after the February 1 coup.

Meanwhile, protesters took to the streets again despite February 28 seeing the deadliest day yet with 18 killed.

The deaths came as the military and police ramped up their response to demonstrations across the South East Asian nation over the weekend, firing into the crowds.

However, protesters defied the crackdown on March 1, demanding the elected government be restored and Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), be released from detention.

The military says it seized power because of alleged fraud in November’s general elections, which saw the NLD win by a landslide.

It has provided no proof of these allegations – instead, it has replaced the Election Commission and promised fresh polls in a year.

Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested when the coup began and had not been seen in public until Monday’s hearing, when she appeared via video link at the court in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw.

It is unclear where she has been held over the past month, but some reports suggest she was detained at her home in Nay Pyi Taw before being moved to an undisclosed location.

Aung San Suu Kyi originally faced two charges of illegally importing walkie talkies and violating Myanmar’s natural disaster law, but a further two charges were added on March 1. She was accused of using illegal communication equipment and causing “fear and alarm”.

The initial charges carried sentences of up to three years in jail. It is not clear what punishment the new charges might carry, but she could reportedly be barred from running in future elections if convicted.

The case has been adjourned until March 15.

News agency Myanmar Now reported that ousted president Win Myint – a key ally of Aung San Suu Kyi – had also been charged for incitement under the penal code.

Her popularity has soared in Myanmar since her arrest, but her international reputation still remains tarnished by allegations that she turned a blind eye to ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority Rohingya community.

Protests erupted again in multiple cities across Myanmar. According to the AFP news agency, one clash saw unarmed protesters fleeing after a volley of shots were fired. It was unclear if live ammunition was used.

AFP reported that in Yangon, demonstrators were seen using makeshift items like bamboo poles, sofas and even tree branches to erect barricades across streets.

Tear gas and stun grenades were also used to disperse hundreds of protesters in Yangon, Reuters news agency reported.

At least 21 people have been killed since the unrest began last month.

On March 1, army chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing gave a TV address during which he said protest leaders and “instigators” would be punished.

Myanmar’s military seized power after overthrowing the government and declared a state of emergency.

C-PAC: Donald Trump Gives First Public Speech Since Leaving Office

Donald Trump is giving his first speech since leaving office as president at the Conservative Political Action Conference (C-PAC).

His public appearance comes just weeks after he was acquitted during an impeachment trial which saw some members of his own Republican Party vote against him.

The former president is expected to attack the actions being taken by successor Joe Biden in the Florida speech.

The C-PAC appearance represents his continued influence over Republicans.

The mood of the conference so far has been extremely pro-Trump, with loyalists including Texas Senator Ted Cruz and his son Donald Trump Jr. among the speakers confirmed.

Donald Trump’s speech was hotly anticipated by his supporters, given his relative absence from the political spotlight since leaving office.

He remains banned from social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, over his response to January’s deadly riot at the US Capitol.

He has been living at his Mar-a-Lago Florida golf resort since leaving the White House.

According to prepared script excerpts sent by his office ahead of time, Donald Trump will attack early actions by President Joe Biden during the speech – especially on immigration.

He is also set to focus on what he will describe as the future of “our movement” during the speech, amid a divide among some Republicans over the party’s future political direction.

He is expected to say that the “incredible journey” that he and supporters “began together four years ago is far from over”. But Donald Trump is not expected to confirm another presidential run in 2024 yet, according to a senior adviser quoted by CBS.

Donald Trump Jr. trailed his father’s appearance during his own speech on February 26.

He told the audience: “I imagine it will not be what we call a low energy speech, and I assure you that it will solidify Donald Trump and all of your feelings about the MAGA [Make America Great Again] movement as the future of the Republican party.”

Members of the Republican Party remained largely loyal to Donald Trump during his time in office but 10 voted to impeach him in the House of Representatives last month and seven voted to convict him in the subsequent Senate trial. The overall tally, 57-43 in favor of his guilt, fell short of the two-thirds margin needed to convict Donald Trump.

The schism in the party has remained since, with those who have broken rank against him notably absent from the CPAC stage.

The C-PAC, which began in 1974, is seen as the most influential gathering of conservatives and a barometer of the Republican party’s political direction.

Despite losing November’s presidential election and being deeply criticized over the January riot by some of his supporters, reports suggest Donald Trump remains extremely popular among his voting base.

Last week, one poll suggested 46% of surveyed Trump voters would vote for him on a third-party ticket rather than another Republican candidate.

Andrew Cuomo Faces Second Claim of Harassment

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is facing a second claim of harassment coming from his former aide Charlotte Bennett.

Charlotte Bennett, a health policy adviser to Governor Cuomo until November, told the New York Times that he had harassed her last year.

Andrew Cuomo, 63, has denied any inappropriate behavior and ordered an independent inquiry into the allegations.

Another former aide, Lindsey Boylan, has previously accused the governor of harassing her.

The 63-year-old, who has been governor for more than a decade, has found himself under pressure on several fronts in recent weeks.

Andrew Cuomo is under scrutiny from the Democratic Party – of which he is a member – for allegedly hiding the true number of Covid-related deaths in New York care homes.

He has also faced allegations of bullying, including from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Charlotte Bennett, 25, told the New York Times that Andrew Cuomo had asked her numerous questions about her personal life including whether she believed that age made a difference in romantic relationships.

She said he had also suggested that the governor was open to relationships with women in their 20s. Charlotte Bennett said she believed the comments were clear overtures to a sexual relationship.

In the interview, she said that in June last year Governor Cuomo had talked about feeling lonely during the pandemic and had asked her whom she had last hugged.

She said she dodged the question by saying she missed hugging her parents, but she believed the conversation had been another overture.

Charlotte Bennett said: “I understood that the governor wanted to sleep with me, and felt horribly uncomfortable and scared and was wondering how I was going to get out of it and assumed it was the end of my job.”

She said she informed Governor Cuomo’s chief of staff, Jill DesRosiers, after the interaction and less than a week later was transferred to another job.

She said she had decided not to seek a formal investigation because she “wanted to move on”. No action was taken against Andrew Cuomo.

Covid-19: New York Imposes New Restrictions Aimed at Curbing Coronavirus

Coronavirus: President Donald Trump Lashes Out At Democrat Governors

In a statement released on February 27, Governor Cuomo said he believed he had been acting as a mentor to Charlotte Bennett.

He said he had “never made advances toward Ms Bennett, nor did I ever intend to act in any way that was inappropriate”.

He said: “The last thing I would ever have wanted was to make her feel any of the things that are being reported.”

Governor Cuomo said he had authorized an external review of the matter.

“I ask all New Yorkers to await the findings of the review so that they know the facts before making any judgements,” he said.

Earlier this month, Lindsey Boylan published an essay detailing her claims of harassment.

She accused Governor Cuomo of kissing her on the lips and asking her to play strip poker while on his private jet.

She also claimed that he touched her without consent and frequently made inappropriate comments to her and other women about their appearances.

Andrew Cuomo had denied the accusations when they emerged late last year and reiterated those denials after the essay was published.

New York was one of the states worst hit by the pandemic and the governor won widespread praise for his response.

However, in January a report about New York’s response to Covid-19 in care homes – and the handling of related data – said it appeared a complete tally had not been provided to state lawmakers.

More than 15,000 New Yorkers in care homes have died since the start of the pandemic – believed to be the highest of any state in the US.

But until January, New York’s health department had logged just over 8,500 fatalities.

Andrew Cuomo acknowledged “a delay” in the reporting of some nursing home deaths but said the overall Covid-19 death count had always been accurate.

However, in a private conversation leaked to the New York Post, a top aide to Governor Cuomo confessed to covering up the real numbers and withholding the information out of concern the data “was going to be used against us”.

Andrew Cuomo has also faced accusations of bullying.

After Democratic New York Assemblyman Ron Kim criticized Andrew Cuomo over the nursing home issue, Governor Cuomo allegedly rang him and threatened his career.

Ron Kim accused his fellow Democrat of “verbal abuse” as other officials rushed to his defense.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the account “classic Andrew Cuomo,” adding that “the bullying is nothing new”.

Andrew Cuomo became one of the nation’s most influential Democrats during the early days of the pandemic.

The governor’s briefings, TV live, sometimes received more attention than appearances by the then-presidential Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

FDA Approves Single-Shot Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 Vaccine

The FDA has formally approved the single-shot Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine, the third to be authorized in the US.

The vaccine is set to be a cost-effective alternative to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and can be stored in a refrigerator instead of a freezer.

Trials found the vaccine prevented serious illness but was 66% effective overall when moderate cases were included.

It is made by the Belgian firm Janssen.

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to provide the US with 100 million doses by the end of June. The first doses could be available to the public as early as next week.

The UK, EU and Canada have also ordered doses, and 500 million doses have also been ordered through the Covax scheme to supply poorer nations.

President Joe Biden hailed it as “exciting news for all Americans, and an encouraging development”, but warned that the “fight is far from over”.

He said in a statement: “Though we celebrate today’s news, I urge all Americans – keep washing your hands, stay socially distanced, and keep wearing masks..

“As I have said many times, things are still likely to get worse again as new variants spread, and the current improvement could reverse.”

The FDA authorization came after an external committee of exerts unanimously backed the vaccine on February 27.

Results from trials conducted in the US, South Africa and Brazil showed it was more than 85% effective at preventing serious illness, and 66% effective overall when moderate cases were included.

Notably, there were no deaths among participants who had received the vaccine and no hospital admissions after 28 days post-vaccine.

Overall protection was lower in South Africa and Brazil, where virus variants have become dominant, but defense against severe or critical illness was “similarly high”.

Single-Dose Janssen Vaccine Shows 66% Effectiveness Against Covid-19

South Africa began administering the unapproved Johnson & Johnson vaccine to healthcare workers as part of a study earlier this month. It came after early trials suggested the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine offered “minimal protection” against mild disease from the variant dominant in large parts of the country.

So far the only other country to approve the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for emergency use is Bahrain, which gave it the green light on February 25.

Because the vaccine will require fewer doses than its two-shot Pfizer and Moderna counterparts, it will also require fewer vaccine appointments and medical staff.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses a common cold virus that has been engineered to make it harmless.

It then safely carries part of the coronavirus’s genetic code into the body. This is enough for the body to recognize the threat and then learn to fight coronavirus.

This trains the body’s immune system to fight coronavirus when it encounters the virus for real.

This is similar to the approach used by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca.

American Rescue Plan: President Biden’s $1.9Tn Covid Relief Bill Passes House Vote

President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion relief plan to help Americans during the Covid-19 pandemic has been approved in the House of Representatives.

The vote was along partisan lines. Two Democrats joined Republicans – who see it as too expensive – in opposing it.

The relief bill must now go to the evenly-divided Senate, which has already blocked a key element – doubling the US minimum wage to $15/hour.

The Covid-19 relief package seeks to boost vaccinations and testing, and stabilize the economy.

The cash would be extended as emergency financial aid to households, small businesses and state governments. Unemployment is close to 10%, with some 10 million jobs lost in the pandemic.

The vote comes in the same week the United States passed 500,000 coronavirus-related deaths – the largest figure of any nation in the world.

In brief remarks at the White House on February 26, President Biden hailed the House’s approval of the plan, saying he hoped it would receive “quick action” at the Senate.

He said: “We have no time to waste.

“If we act now, decisively, quickly and boldly we can finally get ahead of this virus, we can finally get our economy moving again. And the people in this country have suffered far too much for too long. We need to relieve that suffering.”

Joe Biden had appealed for bipartisan unity when he took office last month.

He has championed what he calls the American Rescue Plan as a way to help struggling Americans through Covid-19.

However, Republicans say the plan is unnecessarily large and stuffed with Democratic priorities unrelated to the pandemic.

The divisions were reflected by the representatives.

The bill is the third major spending package of the pandemic, and actually not quite as big as President Donald Trump’s $2trillion last March.

President Trump Fails to Sign Covid-19 Relief Bill into Law

President Trump Threatens to Block Covid-19 Relief Bill

The key elements include:

  • A $1,400 cheque per person, although payments phase out for higher incomes
  • Extending jobless benefits until the end of August to help the more than 11 million long-term unemployed
  • Parents of children under the age of 18 to get a year of monthly benefits
  • $70 billion to boost Covid-19 testing and vaccinations
  • Financial support for schools and universities to help them reopen
  • Grants for small businesses and other targeted industries
  • Funds for local government

One of the other major elements is the increase of the minimum wage from $7.25/hour – where it has been since 2009 – to $15.

On February 25, Elizabeth MacDonough, the non-partisan Senate parliamentarian – who interprets its rules – said that raising the minimum wage would violate the budgetary limits allowed in this kind of measure.

The bill that passed in the House does still include the increase and it remains unclear how the issue can be resolved.

The minimum wage rise remains a key Democrat goal, particularly for the party’s progressive wing, and some top Democrats are considering a measure to penalize employers who pay less than $15/hour.

Republicans argue the minimum wage increase would be too heavy a toll on firms struggling to rebuild following the Covid-19 outbreak.

The package goes to the Senate – spilt evenly between Democrats and Republicans 50-50 – probably next week. The rules of the Senate do allow a reconciliation bill like this to be passed on a simple majority, rather than 60-40.

Khashoggi Report: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Approved Khashoggi Operation

The report released by the office of the US director of national intelligence has found that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved the murder of exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

The report released by the Biden administration says the Saudi prince approved a plan to either “capture or kill” Jamal Khashoggi, who was based in the US.

It is the first time the US has publicly named the crown prince, who denies ordering the murder.

Meanwhile, the US announced sanctions on dozens of Saudis but not the prince himself.

Jamal Khashoggi, 59, was killed while visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Washington Post journalist had once been an adviser to the Saudi government and close to the royal family but he fell out of favor and went into self-imposed exile in the US in 2017.

From there, Jamal Khashoggi wrote a monthly column in the Washington Post in which he criticized the policies of Prince Mohammed.

The report says: “We assess that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman approved an operation in Istanbul to capture or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.”

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the son of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and is considered to be the effective ruler of the kingdom.

The intelligence report lists three reasons for believing that the Saudi prince must have approved the operation:

  • his control of decision-making in the kingdom since 2017
  • the direct involvement in the operation of one of his advisers as well as members of his protective detail
  • his “support for using violent measures to silence dissidents abroad”

The report goes on to name individuals allegedly complicit in, or responsible for, Jamal Khashoggi’s death. But it says “we do not know how far in advance” those involved planned to harm him.

Saudi authorities have blamed the killing on a “rogue operation” by a team of agents sent to return the journalist to the kingdom, and a Saudi court tried and sentenced five individuals to 20 years in prison last September, after initially sentencing them to death.

In 2019, UN special rapporteur Agnes Callamard accused the Saudi state of the “deliberate, premeditated execution” of Jamal Khashoggi and dismissed the Saudi trial as an “antithesis of justice”.

Shortly after the report was released, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the travel restrictions, dubbed the “Khashoggi Ban”.

Those targeted are “believed to have been directly engaged in serious, extraterritorial counter-dissident activities”, he said.

“Perpetrators targeting perceived dissidents on behalf of any foreign government should not be permitted to reach American soil,” Antony Blinken warned.

In addition, the treasury department sanctioned some of those around Prince Mohammed: one of his close aides, former deputy intelligence chief Ahmad Asiri, as well as his personal protective force, which was involved in the killing.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, is a key American ally in the Middle East.

President Joe Biden is expected to take a firmer line than his predecessor Donald Trump on human rights and the rule of law in Saudi Arabia.

In a phone call on February 25 with King Salman, President Biden “affirmed the importance the United States places on universal human rights and the rule of law”, the White House said.

According to sources quoted by Reuters, the Biden administration is also considering the cancelation of arms deals with Saudi Arabia that pose human rights concerns as well as the limiting of future military sales to “defensive” weapons.

US to Release Report on Jamal Khashoggi Murder

The US authorities are set to release a report of an investigation into the gruesome murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi which is widely expected to implicate the kingdom’s powerful crown prince.

President Joe Biden has read the report and is due to speak to King Salman.

The president wants to “recalibrate” ties with Saudi Arabia, which became closer under President Donald Trump.

Jamal Khashoggi’s body was dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bon Salman denies involvement.

The Washington Post journalist, known for his criticism of Saudi authorities, went to the consulate in October 2018 in order to obtain papers allowing him to get married.

According to Saudi authorities, Jamal Khashoggi’s death and dismemberment was the result of a “rogue operation” by a team of agents sent to return him to the kingdom.

Five individuals were given death sentences for the murder by a Saudi court but these were commuted to 20 years in prison in September 2020.

The report, which is expected to be released later on February 25, will say that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved “and likely ordered” Jamal Khashoggi’s killing, four US officials told Reuters.

They said the CIA was the main contributor to the report.

The Saudi public prosecution and Prince Mohammed insist he did not have any knowledge of the murder but in 2019 he said he took “full responsibility as a leader in Saudi Arabia, especially since it was committed by individuals working for the Saudi government”.

According to that reported assessment, there was no “smoking gun” but US officials thought such an operation would have required the prince’s approval.

The Washington Post said at the time that the CIA assessment had been based partly on a phone call made by the crown prince’s brother, Prince Khalid bin Salman, who was the then Saudi ambassador to the US.

Prince Khalid, who is now deputy defense minister, allegedly called Jamal Khashoggi at the direction of his brother and gave him assurances that he would be safe to go to the consulate in Istanbul. Prince Khalid has denied any communication with the journalist.

In 2019, UN special rapporteur Agnes Callamard accused Saudi Arabia of the “deliberate, premeditated execution” of Jamal Khashoggi and dismissed the Saudi trial as an “antithesis of justice”.

The publication of the report is part of President Biden’s policy to realign ties with long-term ally Saudi Arabia and take a much tougher stance than his predecessor President Trump on certain Saudi positions.

The Trump administration had previously rejected a legal requirement to release a declassified version of the report, focusing instead on improved co-operation with the Saudis.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on February 24 that President Biden would communicate with King Salman, and not directly with the crown prince, who is his son and is considered the de facto ruler in Saudi Arabia.

She said President Biden was due to speak to the 85-year-old king for the first time since taking office “soon”, without giving a specific time for the call.

Jen Psaki told reporters: “We’ve made clear from the beginning that we are going to recalibrate our relationship with Saudi Arabia.”

Covax Initiative: Ghana Receives 600,000 Doses of Covid-19 Vaccine

Ghana has become the first country to receive Covid-19 vaccines through the Covax vaccine-sharing initiative.

A delivery of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in Accra on February 24. The first recipients are due to be healthcare workers.

The Covax scheme aims to reduce the divide between rich countries and poorer nations unable to buy doses.

The program is planning to deliver about two billion vaccine doses globally by the end of the year.

Ghana, which has a population of over 30 million, was chosen as the first recipient of the free vaccines after promising quick distribution and meeting the criteria set by Covax.

Further deliveries are expected to neighboring Ivory Coast later this week, the Covax alliance says.

Vaccinations are expected to start in Ghana next week, and, as well as health workers, those over 60, people with underlying health conditions, and senior officials are due to be prioritized.

The vaccines delivered to Accra were produced by the Serum Institute of India and developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. The vaccine has been approved by the WHO and its roll-out in Ghana is not part of a trial.

Covid-19 Vaccine: Israel Leads the World in Vaccination Rate

The doses being sent to lower-income countries such as Ghana are funded by donations. As well as procuring and delivering the vaccines, Covax partners are supporting local authorities in areas such as training people to administer the vaccine and helping provide an adequate cold-chain storage and delivery system.

Many nations in the developed world, which began their own vaccinations months ago, have faced criticism for buying or ordering more vaccines than they need.

However, many of those countries placed orders for doses with pharmaceutical companies before knowing whether the vaccine in development would be effective. They were hedging their bets – placing multiple orders in the hope that at least some of them would work out.

The Covax scheme is led by the WHO and also involves the Global Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

In a joint statement, the WHO and the United Nations children’s fund (UNICEF) said it was a momentous occasion and “critical in bringing the pandemic to an end”.

Last Statue of Dictator Francisco Franco on Spanish Soil Removed

Spain has removed the last statue of General Francisco Franco on its soil, after the tiny enclave of Melilla voted to take down its monument to the fascist dictator.

Workers destroyed the brink plinth and carried away the statue, which had stood at the gates of the city on the north-west coast of Africa.

Only the far-right Vox party in Melilla had voted against its removal.

Francisco Franco ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975.

More than 30,000 people were killed in the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War, which saw Franco’s Nationalist forces defeat the Republican government.

The general then presided over a regime of state terror and national brainwashing through the controlled media and the state education system.

It was not until 2007 that a Law of Historical Memory was passed that attempted to recognize the suffering of victims of Francoism.

Under that law, symbols of the dictatorship have slowly been removed, including other high-profile statues around Spain.

King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicates

Elena Fernandez Trevino, of the Melilla assembly, described the removal of the enclave’s Franco statue as an “historic day”.

She said it was the “only statue dedicated to a dictator still in the public sphere in Europe”.

Members of the Vox party had argued against its removal, saying that the statue – erected in 1978 – commemorated Franco’s role as commander of the Spanish Legion in the Rif War, a conflict Spain fought in the 1920s against Berber tribes in Morocco.

General Franco was buried in a vast mausoleum called the Valley of the Fallen, just outside Madrid, alongside tens of thousands of people who lost their lives in the civil war.

The mausoleum was partly built by political prisoners, whom Franco’s regime subjected to forced labor, and had become a shrine for the far right.

In 2019, Francisco Franco’s remains were moved to a low-key grave. Deputy PM Carmen Calvo said: “The more than 30,000 victims of both sides will have peace and respect from all there.”

Gerard Depardieu Charged with 2018 Rape

Gérard Depardieu has been formally placed under investigation over accusations that he raped an actress at his home in 2018.

The woman accuses the French actor of raping and assaulting her in Paris in August 2018.

Gérard Depardieu’s lawyer told AFP that the actor “totally dispute[d]” the allegation, and the investigation should not have been made public.

The arts world in France has been shaken by a series of accusations of abuse against leading figures.

Gérard Depardieu, 73, is one of France’s most famous actors, known for films including Jean de Florette, Green Card and Cyrano.

An initial investigation into the rape allegations was dropped in 2019, with prosecutors citing insufficient evidence, but was reopened last summer. Prosecutors formally placed Gérard Depardieu under investigation in December 2020.

The actor is free but under judicial supervision.

The woman’s lawyer, Elodie Tuaillon-Hibon, told AFP she hoped her client’s “private sphere” would be respected as the case unfolded.

Able to combine bearish physicality with emotional delicacy on screen, Gérard Depardieu has appeared in some 170 films, getting his big break in 1973 with Les Valseuses (Going Places).

He won the best actor award for Cyrano at Cannes in 1990, and was nominated for an Oscar for the same role.

Green Card, an English-language comedy made the same year, brought him further acclaim outside the French-speaking world.

Off-screen, the actor made headlines in recent years for attacking French tax laws, moving to Belgium in protest.

In 2013, Gérard Depardieu took Russian citizenship, with his decree of naturalization signed personally by President Vladimir Putin.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers.”

Tiger Woods was involved in a car crash in November 2009 which eventually led to admissions of infidelity and the breakdown of his marriage. He then took a break from golf but returned shortly afterwards.

Following five wins in 2013, Tiger Woods started just 24 events in the next four years because of chronic back pain and multiple surgeries.

In 2017, Tiger Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence when he was found asleep at the wheel of his car. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

He had five prescription drugs in his system as he recovered from the spinal fusion surgery that ultimately gave him a second golfing career.

Tiger Woods ended an 11-year wait for a major title when he won the Masters at Augusta in 2019.

How to Improve Your Home’s Air Quality

Many people feel safer in the comforts of their home, particularly when it comes to any kind of pollution. The outside world can be filled with dust, smog, haze, and other potentially harmful pollutants, which is why many people feel like their indoor air is clean and safe for them to breathe.

While it may seem that your home’s indoor air quality is far better than the outdoors, this is not entirely true. In some cases, indoors tend to be more polluted than the outdoors. The air in our homes can be filled with chemicals from home cleaners and fire-control equipment. In fact, there is a high probability that your home has a heating system that retains allergens indoors. It is not always possible to open the windows to air out your home. However, there are numerous ways for you to improve your home’s air quality:

1.   Regularly Clean Your Home

Air pollution in your home will be significantly reduced once you make cleaning a part of your routine. For one, you will see an immediate reduction of dust, pet dander, and other potential allergens. Start by having a regular schedule of vacuuming your carpets and rugs. Make sure you have a vacuum that comes with suitable filters. If you plan to renovate your home, it will help to replace the carpet flooring with hardwood or tiles to reduce the presence of air allergens.

In addition to cleaning your carpets regularly, you should also pay careful attention to your curtains, cushions, sofas, and bedding. If you have pets that stay indoors, make sure to clean their area, mainly where they spend most of their time. It will also help to reduce your clutter that can accumulate dust.

2.   Change Your AC Filters

Your home’s heating, venting, and air-conditioning system work year-round to make sure that your entire family enjoys the perfect temperature. Part of its function is to maintain the proper air cycle in your home by filtering the air pollutants. That’s why it is necessary to practice proper maintenance of the AC filters. Failure to clean these filters can lead to clogging and eventual breakage, which will drastically drop your home’s air quality.

3.   Air Your Plants

Having indoor plants offers many benefits. Aside from improving the overall appearance of your home, they also improve your air quality. However, they can also be prone to become a breeding ground for mold, dust, and other pests. That’s why it is essential to air them once in a while. It will help if you can bring your plants outside at least twice a week to get the necessary sunlight and air they need.

4.   Air Out Your Home

Indoor air can become stale if there is not steady airflow in your home. Whenever possible, it is best to air out your home. Open your windows to let the air circulate. However, if it is not possible, particularly during the winter season, you can use trickle vents instead. They are highly beneficial for homes in urban settings where the outdoor air is full of smog, smoke, and dust. Having them in your bathroom and kitchen helps, as these areas need it the most.

5.   Avoid Smoking Inside

If you live with a smoker, instruct them to smoke outside of your home. The smoke from cigarettes has over 4,000 harmful chemicals, which can cause cancer, infections, and asthma. If possible, quitting is a better option for everyone.

Maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial for one’s health. Following the above tips will ensure that your home is both clean and safe.

President Biden Commemorates 500,000 US Lives Lost to Covid-19

President Joe Biden has addressed the nation as the United States passed 500,000 Covid-related deaths, the highest number of any country.

He said: “As a nation, we can’t accept such a cruel fate. We have to resist becoming numb to the sorrow.”

The president and vice-president, and their spouses, then observed a moment of silence outside the White House during a candle-lighting ceremony.

According to recent reports, the number of confirmed US infections now stands at 28.1 million, also a global record.

President Biden ordered all flags on federal property to be lowered to half mast for the next five days.

At the White House, the president opened his speech by noting that the number of American deaths from Covid-19 was higher than the death toll from World War One, World War Two, and the Vietnam War combined.

He said: “Today we mark a truly grim, heartbreaking milestone – 500,071 dead.”

“We often hear people described as ordinary Americans,” President Biden went on to say.

“There’s no such thing, there’s nothing ordinary about them. The people we lost were extraordinary. They span generations. Born in America, emigrated to America.”

“So many of them took their final breath alone in America.”

President Biden drew on his own experience with grief – his wife and daughter were killed in a car crash in 1972 and one of his sons died from brain cancer in 2015.

He said: “I know what it’s like to not be there when it happens. I know what it’s like when you are there holding their hands; there’s a look in their eye and they slip away.

“For me, the way through sorrow and grief is to find purpose.”

Joe Biden’s approach to the pandemic is different to his predecessor, Donald Trump, who cast doubt on the impact of the deadly virus and was viewed as having politicized the wearing of masks and other measures needed to prevent the spread of the virus.

On January 19, one day before Joe Biden took office, he held an event to mark 400,000 Americans dying of the disease.

February 22 event, marking the latest death toll, comes about one month later.

Elsewhere in Washington, the bells at the National Cathedral tolled 500 times, once for every 1,000 Americans lost during the pandemic.

Emma Coronel Aispuro: El Chapo Guzman’s Wife Arrested at Dulles Airport on Drug Trafficking Charges

Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of jailed Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, has been arrested in the US on suspicion of drug trafficking, authorities say.

The 31-year-old was detained at Dulles International Airport outside Washington DC.

El Chapo’s wife is charged with participating in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana.

The 63-year-old drug lord is currently serving a life sentence in New York for drug trafficking and money laundering.

El Chapo is a former head of the Sinaloa cartel, which officials say was the biggest supplier of drugs to the US.

His trial in 2019 heard shocking revelations about his life, from drugging and raping girls as young as 13 to carrying out the cold-blooded murders of former cartel members and rivals.

El Chapo Guzman Complains in Court About US Jail Conditions

Emma Coronel Aispuro is due to appear in a federal court in DC via video conference, the DoJ said.

As well as facing drug trafficking charges, she is also accused of conspiring with others to help her husband escape from prison in Mexico in 2015.

El Chapo Guzman was sprung from Mexico’s maximum-security Altiplano prison after his sons bought a property near the prison and a GPS watch smuggled into the prison gave diggers his exact location. He escaped by riding a specially adapted small motorcycle through the tunnel.

Court documents said Emma Coronel Aispuro was allegedly involved in planning another prison escape for her husband before he was extradited to the US in January 2017.

Emma Coronel Aispuro has not commented on the charges.

She is a dual US-Mexico citizen and the mother of twins with Guzman. She attended nearly every day of her husband’s three-month trial in New York, during which she heard not only grim accounts of murder and rape, but also claims he spied on her and other mistresses.

El Chapo Guzmán came from a poor family in Sinaloa state, north-west Mexico. His organized crime business grew so big that he entered Forbes’ 2009 list of the world’s richest men at number 701, with an estimated worth of $1 billion.

NASA Releases Videos of Perseverance Rover Landing on Mars

NASA has unveiled stunning videos of its Perseverance rover landing on Mars.

The videos cover the final minutes of last week’s hair-raising descent, up to the point where the rover’s wheels make contact with the ground.

The sequences show a whirl of dust and grit being kicked up as the vehicle is lowered by its rocket backpack to the floor of Jezero Crater.

Perseverance was sent to Mars festooned with cameras, seven of which were dedicated to recording the landing.

Their imagery represents vital feedback for engineers as they look to improve still further the technologies used to put probes on the surface of the Red planet.

All the cameras employed in the descent and landing were off-the-shelf, ruggedized sports cameras, with next-to-no modifications.

The cameras were positioned to capture key hardware events – from the release of the supersonic parachute, through the jettisoning of the entry capsule’s heatshield and flight of the backpack, or “sky crane”, all the way through to touchdown and the backpack’s disposal.

This corresponded to roughly the final four minutes of the rover’s seven-minute descent to the surface.

One of the three cameras looking up at the parachutes failed, but the other six cameras worked flawlessly. NASA had hoped also to record the sound of the descent with a microphone, but unfortunately this didn’t succeed.

However, the team has managed to get a mic operating on the ground so there is the possibility of hearing Perseverance go about its exploration duties in the coming weeks. Already, the muffled sound of the wind in Jezero Crater has been played back.

Videos have been made at Mars before, but these were low frame-rate affairs – more what you might call “stop motion” action. The Perseverance offering on the other hand is simply jaw-dropping in its clarity and detail.

At the weekend, Perseverance’s navigation mast, which had been stowed flat since leaving Earth last year, was raised into the vertical.

This allowed the main science cameras at the mast’s top, the Mastcam-Z system, to begin building a panorama of the surrounding terrain in Jezero and of the deck of the rover itself. The latter mosaic is wanted to look for any damage that might have been inflicted by flying stones at the time of landing.

NASA’s Perseverance Rover Successfully Lands on Mars

Controllers will this week perform the critical task of transitioning Perseverance away from the software that got it safely down to the surface of Mars to one that enables the robot to rove and use equipment such as its robotic arm.

This is likely to take four Martian days, or Sols (a Martian day lasts 24 hours and 39 minutes). We might see a wheel wiggle and the first test drive of a few meters come the weekend.

A NASA satellite, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, has already identified and photographed the discarded hardware from landing.

Perseverance’s landing spot is in a 1.2km by 1.2km quadrangle that the science team has informally called Canyon de Chelly after the National Monument in Arizona.

President Biden Declares Major Disaster in Texas

President Joe Biden has declared a major disaster in Texas, clearing the way for more federal funds to be spent on relief efforts in the state.

Power is returning across Texas and temperatures are set to rise, but some 13 million people are still facing difficulties accessing clean water.

President Biden has said he will visit Texas as long as his presence is not a burden on relief efforts.

Nearly 60 deaths have been attributed to cold weather across the US.

In a statement released by the White House, President Biden said he had “ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe winter storms”.

“Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster,” the statement said.

President Biden has been in touch with the mayors of some of Texas’ biggest cities, such as Houston, Austin and Dallas, to ensure they have access to government resources, an administration official said.

Several other southern states hit by snow and ice storms this week have also reported water service outages.

Winter weather has also cut off water in the city of Jackson, Mississippi – home to around 150,000 people – as well as the largest county in Tennessee that includes the city of Memphis, with more than 651,000 residents.

Across the South, a region unaccustomed to such frigid temperatures, people whose pipes have frozen have taken to boiling snow to make water.

Texas’s energy grid has been overwhelmed by a surge in demand for heat as temperatures plummeted to 30-year lows, hitting 0F earlier this week.

As of February 19, about 180,000 homes and businesses in Texas still had no electricity. Amid freezing temperatures earlier this week, as many as 3.3 million were without power.

Around 13 million people – close to half of Texas population – have faced some disruption of water services as hundreds of water systems have been damaged by the freeze.

Austin lost 325 million gallons of water when pipes burst, the city’s water director told reporters on February 18.

Polar Vortex freezes parts of US

Texas’ largest city, Houston, is under a so-called “boil water notice”, with the CDC advising that all water planned for consumption – even if filtered – must be boiled as it may be contaminated.

Officials there say they are working to rapidly distribute bottled water, as well as power generators, to people in need. Breweries and other local businesses have also assisted with efforts to supply drinkable water.

On February 19, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the state was providing “any and all resources to assist and to accelerate the response at the local level”.

State officials could not offer a timeline for exactly when the water would come back on, saying it was a question for local water providers – and many have not yet fully assessed the damage to their systems.

Governor Abbott also said more plumbers are headed to the state. Water pipes have been bursting across Texas due to the freeze, and local plumbers have struggled to meet demand.

Over 320 plumbers have renewed their licenses, and the state agencies are working with out-of-state plumbing companies to secure additional help, he said.

As of February 19, storm warnings are still in place across much of Texas, but temperatures will rise in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The forecaster has also warned of dangerous travel conditions and power outages in eastern parts of the US as another winter storm system is expected to bring heavy snow, freezing rain and ice.

Alexei Navalny Loses Appeal Against Jailing

Alexei Navalny has lost an appeal against his jailing for violating the terms of a suspended sentence.

The Russian opposition leader was detained last month after returning to Russia from Germany, where he was being treated for a near-fatal nerve agent attack.

Alexei Navalny has blamed President Vladimir Putin for the attack and says the charges against him are fabricated.

However, the Kremlin denies any involvement in his poisoning.

Alexei Navalny was accused of breaking the terms of a 2014 suspended sentence for embezzlement that required him to report regularly to Russian police.

In court, in a speech that referenced both the Bible and the Harry Potter series, the activist argued the charges were “absurd” as he was unable to report to the police while recovering from the nerve agent attack.

He said: “The whole world knew where I was.

“Once I’d recovered, I bought a plane ticket and came home.”

However, the judge rejected Navalny’s case and he will return to the penal colony where he is serving his time. The judge did, though, cut his six weeks off the nearly three-year sentence imposed.

Alexei Navalny faces another appearance in court on February 20, on charges of slandering a World War Two veteran who praised Vladimir Putin.

The European Court of Human Rights, of which Russia is a member, says Alexei Navalny should be released out of concern for his life. But Russia said the call was “unlawful”.

Alexei Navalny’s supporters see the charges as an attempt to silence him and thwart his political ambitions.

The activist has been a persistent thorn in the side of President Putin, making allegations of corruption including a claim the president owns a lavish palace by the Black Sea.

Navalny’s allies are seeking to challenge pro-Kremlin parties in parliamentary elections this year, and President Putin warned on February 18 against foreign interference.

European foreign ministers are set to meet on February 22 to discuss imposing further sanctions on Russia over the case.

There are divisions among EU members, with Germany going ahead with the Nord Stream 2 project which would transfer gas directly from Russia to Germany.

The Nord Stream 2 project is opposed by Poland and the Baltic states. On February 19, Lithuania said it should be paused until after September’s parliamentary elections in Russia.

Kim Kardashian Files for Divorce from Kanye West

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West decided to release their wedding photos on social media a la Beyonce and Jay Z

According to recent reports, Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from Kanye West.

The reality star and the rapper have been married for almost seven years and have four children together.

The news was broken by celebrity news website TMZ after months of rumors of marital difficulties.

According to media reports, Kim Kardashian, 40, has requested joint legal and physical custody of their children. Neither has publicly commented.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are among the most recognizable stars in the world and are both hugely successful in their own right.

She first found fame in 2007 as the star of an E! Television reality series about her family. Keeping up with the Kardashians has remained hugely popular since, with its 21st and final series due to air in 2022.

Kim Kardashian has found success in many other areas of business, from mobile apps to make-up, and Forbes magazine estimates her personal wealth to be about $780 million.

Known for huge international hits like Gold Digger, Kanye West has been one of the biggest names in rap music for over 15 years. The Grammy-winning musician has also found success as a fashion designer.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were friends for years before they got together and the rapper first appeared on her family’s reality show in 2010.

Their first daughter, North, was born in June 2013.

Kanye West famously hired the San Francisco Giants’ baseball stadium and an orchestra to propose to Kim Kardashian in front of her family, and their show’s cameras, later that year.

The couple got married in Italy in May 2014 and a photograph of them kissing on their wedding day became, at the time, Instagram’s most liked post ever. By this point Kim Kardashian and her sisters had turned social media into an art form, with their online followings propelling their business success and fame ever further.

Kanye West Is Running for President

Kim Kardashian gave birth to the couple’s first son, Saint West, in 2015. They went on to have two other children, Chicago and Psalm, through a surrogate after the reality star suffered from health complications during her previous pregnancies.

They have rarely been away from tabloid headlines since, most notably when Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in Paris in 2016.

In 2020, Kanye West unsuccessfully ran for president. During his campaign, a series of erratic public appearances and online postings by the musician sparked concern and led Kim Kardashian to speak out.

She said her husband had bipolar disorder, was a “brilliant but complicated person” and called for greater empathy surrounding his mental health from the public and the media.

Rumors of their divorce have been around for months amid speculation Kim Kardashian had hired well-known lawyer Laura Wasser.

Page Six reported the filing was imminent in January, claiming Kanye West spent the festive season away from the California-based family at his Wyoming ranch.

Signs of a Romance Scammer

0

Victims of a romance scam are tricked into ‘false’ relationships by criminals who want to steal their personal information or money. Typically, this crime is perpetrated by fraudsters who create fake profiles on dating sites. An obvious sign you’re being duped is if you perform a reverse image search of a picture on someone’s profile and it emerges to be someone else’s, or you run a background check only to find they gave you a fake name.

It’s not always this easy to expose a scammer. Romance and dating scams usually take place through dating apps, but criminals might also use email or social networks to find victims. Sometimes, they will even call the victim to introduce themselves, then move communication to another medium. By knowing the warning signs, you’ll learn how to avoid a romance scam.

Image by mohamed Hassan from Pixabay

The Signs

Typically, scammers will pretend to be trusted people such as aid workers, military personnel, or professionals working remotely. Often, they claim to be working or traveling overseas. They will attempt to get close to people in a brief period of time, expressing powerful emotions for them in the process. They don’t have time to waste, after all. Suggesting to move communication to a private channel is typical of them. If you met them on a dating site, they’ll ask to move the relationship to IM, email, or phone.

Romance scammers will shower you with compliments, send gifts, share personal information, or otherwise attempt to provoke interest and gain trust. They might even pretend to book a flight so you can meet in person. Of course, you never actually end up seeing them.

Once they’ve succeeded in lowering your defenses, they’ll get to the point: asking for gifts, money, or bank account info, be it subtly or directly. They might ask you to send intimate photos or videos of yourself, which they’ll later use to blackmail you.

They’ll say they need the money for an emergency: being mugged, a failed business, or a loved one who needs surgery urgently. They want to visit you but don’t have enough money to buy a plane ticket or cover other travel expenses.

Expensive Gifts

Scammers sometimes send their victims mobile phones, laptops, or other valuable items “as a gift” but then ask them to resend these. They’ll always give a good reason why they need you to do this. Of course, it’s only an issue of concealing criminal activity. They might transfer money to your account and ask you to transfer it elsewhere or ask you to buy something expensive and send it to someone.

There’s no end to their tales, which could put Shahrazad herself to shame. By knowing the signs, you’ll be able to protect yourself. By running a background check, you might catch them red-handed. Be wary of people who ask a lot of personal questions and try to establish a bond fast. Don’t trust people who say things along the lines of, “I’ve never been so attracted to someone as I am to you.”

If you refuse to send them money, their calls or messages become more direct, persistent, or desperate. If you do send money, they keep asking for more. They always have an excuse for why they need more funds or why they can’t travel to meet you in real life.

Inconsistent Stories

Be alert to inconsistencies in stories and vague responses to personal questions. Watch for major spelling and grammar mistakes, especially if they claim to have a university degree or to be native speakers of English. Someone who was born in a country where English is the official language will know how to spell.

If their camera never works when you want a video call, it might mean they don’t want to be recognized. Be cautious about sharing videos or photos of yourself with a prospective partner, particularly if you haven’t met them in person. Tell friends or family where you’re going if you agree to meet.

Final Thoughts

You need to be extra careful because romance scams are on the rise during the pandemic. It appears their frequency will continue to increase in its wake.

NASA’s Perseverance Rover Successfully Lands on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance rover has ended end of its seven-month journey from Earth.

The six-wheeled robot in a deep crater near the planet’s equator called Jezero.

Engineers at NASA’s mission control in California erupted with joy when confirmation of touchdown came through.

The robot will now spend at least the next two years drilling into the local rocks, looking for evidence of past life.

Jezero is thought to have held a giant lake billions of years ago. And where there’s been water, there’s the possibility there might also have been life.

It’s got to put itself down safely on the Red Planet – a task that has befuddled so many spacecraft before it.

If Perseverance is successful, it has an amazing opportunity to find signs of past life on Mars.

Never has a science mission gone to the planet with so sophisticated a suite of instruments; never has a robot been targeted at so promising a location.

Jezero Crater bears all the hallmarks in satellite imagery of once having held a giant lake. And where there’s been abundant water, perhaps there’s been biology as well.

NASA Mars Simulation Ends After One Year

Red Dragon: Elon Musk Plans Mars Landing by 2018

Perseverance will sift and drill into the sediments to look for traces of ancient microbial activity. The most propitious examples will be packaged for return to Earth by later missions.

Matt Wallace, NASA’s deputy project manager for Perseverance, said: “But before we can get that surface mission going, we have to land on Mars and that is always a challenging feat.

“This is one of the most difficult maneuvers we do in the space business. Almost 50% of the spacecraft sent to the surface of Mars have failed, so we know we have our work cut out to get down safely at Jezero.”

The signal alerting controllers that Perseverance was down and safe arrived at 20:55 GMT. In the past they might have hugged and high-fived but strict coronavirus protocols meant they had all been separated by perspex screens. A respectful fist bump was about all they could manage. The robot’s protective capsule will do most of the work of scrubbing off the entry speed but a supersonic parachute and a rocket jetpack, or “Sky crane”, will be needed for the last three minutes of braking and surface placement.

Of the 14 landing attempts at the planet, eight have been successful – all of them American. Indeed, NASA has only got it wrong once, way back in 1999.

Engineers will be following proceedings at mission control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Telemetry from the rover during its descent will be relayed by an overflying satellite – the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The team will also be listening to a series of low-data tones coming back direct from the robot itself.

Ted Cruz Flew to Mexico Amid Texas Deep Freeze Crisis

0

According to new reports, Texas Senator Ted Cruz flew to Mexico with his family amid a winter weather crisis that has left millions in his state without power.

In a statement on February 18, Senator Cruz said that he planned the trip for his daughters, “wanting to be a good dad”.

Photos of the high profile Republican senator at an airport emerged on Twitter on February 17, fuelling reports that he had left Texas amid the energy crisis.

Texas has seen power and water outages due to the uncommonly cold weather.

Ted Cruz has drawn quick criticism for taking an international trip amid the weather emergency in his state.

Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal tweeted: “People in Texas are literally freezing to death and yet Ted Cruz went on vacation to Cancun.”

In a written statement released on February 18, Ted Cruz described an “infuriating week for Texans”.

With Texas schools closed, Senator Cruz said he booked the vacation for his young daughters who “asked to take a trip with friends”.

He did not apologize for making the trip amid the state of emergency in Texas, but said that he and his staff “are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas.”

The Republican will be returning to Texas on February 18, according to his statement. It is not clear if his return flight was originally scheduled for February 18 or is a change in plans.

As a federal lawmaker, Ted Cruz does not have a direct role in Texas’ emergency response, but residents often reach out to their elected officials – like Senator Cruz – during natural disasters for help accessing resources.

Texas Cold: Residents Told to Boil Tap Water as Power Outages Continue

The Houston Police Department told CBS News that a member of Ted Cruz’s staff contacted authorities on February 17 to request assistance upon Senator Cruz’s arrival at Houston’s international airport.

The senator arrived at the airport on February 17, Chief Art Acevedo said, and officers “monitored his movements through the terminal”.

The senator’s travel plans amid the crisis in Texas drew immediate criticism online.

Progressive rights activist Charlotte Clymer on Twitter: “Ted Cruz not only fled the state while millions of vulnerable Texans are without heat and water but specifically diverted police resources to get him through security and crowds faster for his outgoing vacation flight.”

Journalist David Shuster shared a photo of a man who appears to be Ted Cruz boarding a plane, noting that millions of Texans “remain without electricity/water and are literally freezing”.

He tweeted: “Just confirmed @SenTedCruz and his family flew to Cancun tonight for a few days at a resort they’ve visited before. Cruz seems to believe there isn’t much for him to do in Texas for the millions of fellow Texans who remain without electricity/water and are literally freezing.”

Others suggested the added scrutiny may hurt Ted Cruz as he reportedly contemplates a second presidential bid in 2024. Ted Cruz’s current Senate term will expire in early 2025.

However, some conservatives came to Ted Cruz’s defense – author and activist Brigitte Gabriel wrote: “Senator Ted Cruz is one of the hardest working men in the country, he deserves a vacation.”

The news comes as hundreds of thousands of Ted Cruz’s fellow Texans woke up to a fourth day without power, after extreme winter weather overwhelmed the state’s energy grid.

At least 24 people have died amid the winter storms. Outages are expected to continue for days.

Texas officials have also ordered seven million people in the state to boil tap water before consuming it due to damaged infrastructure and pipes.

And with the sustained frigid temperatures, frozen pipes have caused a drop in water pressure in homes and hospitals.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has now asked residents to shut off water to their home if possible to help keep pressure up.

Demi Lovato Reveals She Had Three Strokes and A Heart Attack After 2018 Overdose

Texas residents have been told to boil tap water before consuming it after a deadly winter storm caused power blackouts at treatment facilities.

The huge storm sweeping across the southern US has killed at least 24 people and left millions without power.

Texas has seen widespread blackouts.

Freezing temperatures have also caused water pipes to burst, despite attempts by some homeowners to insulate them from the cold using blankets.

Texas energy grid has been overwhelmed by a surge in demand as people try to keep warm in some of the coldest temperatures there in more than 30 years – hitting 0F earlier this week.

President Joe Biden earlier approved a state of emergency for Texas, which has been blanketed by snow and ice since the storm swept in at the weekend.

A so-called “boil water notice” has been issued for the city of Houston and surrounding areas, affecting nearly 7 million people, with the CDC advising that all water planned for consumption – even if filtered – must be boiled as it may be contaminated.

Only boiled or bottled water should be used, including for brushing teeth, the CDC said.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner urged those without power – and unable to boil tap water – to try to access bottled water wherever possible.

He told reporters at a press conference: “Power will not be restored fully, I would say, probably for another couple of days.”

Mayor Turner also urged people who had been leaving taps running to prevent pipes from freezing not to do so, in an effort to help conserve supplies.

He tweeted: “Water pressure is very low. Please do not run water to keep pipes from bursting. Turn off water if pipes have burst. Please contact us if you don’t know how to turn off water. Be conservative on water usage today. It is needed for hospitals and fires. St”

Texas homes are not normally insulated for cold weather, meaning that indoor temperatures quickly plummeted after heating systems failed.

Mayor Turner said that businesses and churches were being used as “warming centers” to help shelter some of the most vulnerable, while also providing bottled water to residents.

“We are still in the midst of this winter storm,” he warned, urging people to avoid the roads or travelling in the mornings and evenings, describing them as the “most dangerous times”.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said that 1.2 million Texans had so far had their power restored, with more coming “on board”.

How to Maintain Your Jewelry

Jewelry can be timeless or temporary. They are often imbued with sentimentality. It could be an heirloom, for instance – a brooch passed down from a grandparent or a parent’s engagement ring. A partner might have purchased a special bracelet to commemorate an anniversary. One the other hand, they may just be fashion accessories. You had a dress that you’d specifically picked out for this date but it was quite an odd shade of blue which you struggled to match a necklace from your existing collection to, so you went out to a mall and searched for a piece you know you’d maybe only wear with this dress (once or twice then, but let’s not kid ourselves as we all have those outfits). Either way, they have a different value to clothes. Jewelry has its own space and rituals of preservation. There’s a delicacy and a preciousness. As such, here are a few ways for how you can maintain your jewelry’s condition.

Why Does It Tarnish?

Jewelry is often associated with precious metals. It’s true: they are made from gold and silver, for instance. However, they are mixed with other metals too because pure gold and pure silver cannot be handled as it’s too soft. It is the other metals – silver, copper, and zinc – which add the strength so it can be worn as jewelry, handled as coins, and stacked as ingots, that cause it to become dull. This is, then, a natural trajectory for jewelry: it will become dull. There’s no avoiding it.

Each piece will have a different composition of gold and silver, as you well know – hence the karat system for determining how much gold is present. Due to this, each will tarnish to its own degree because of the various metals. Each cause will react differently to whichever metal is present in the jewelry.

What causes the dullness and change in color? It’s body oils, water, salt, makeup – most external substances. This is why it’s hard to avoid tarnishing.

Insurance

Before we discuss the wear which can be helped, we should quickly discuss damage of the irreparable kind. Insurance kicks in for such scary situations as theft, fire damage, water damage, vandalism, falling-object damage – all such perils will be named in your policy. Now, this policy will likely be your homeowners insurance or renters insurance. These will cover your jewelry should they be damaged just fine. The majority of claims are made after theft, which is a standard part of most insurance of this kind. There is, though, a maximum for which your insurance will pay out. This may only go up to just over $1000, which could be more than enough, in which case you have nothing to worry about (those silver bangles and fashion-piece hoop earring might be purely functional to you). However, should you have more expensive jewelry, extra coverage is available. You will be able to find a policy which will have a high maximum limit, adjusted to what you need. However, this extra coverage will be reflected in your jewelry insurance cost.

How to Preserve and Clean your Jewelry

Firstly, keeping them dry and clean is a good first step. You may want to look fancy when you’re poolside, with your engagement sitting proud, but this isn’t best practice. Equally, taking it off before washing your hands or the dishes, if you want to be extra vigilant, is ideal. The water will oxidise the copper which might be in your ring or bracelet, leaving green marks on your skin.

Similarly, putting on jewelry after you’ve sprayed perfume, after you’ve put on lotion, after you’ve changed your outfit, after you’ve put hair spray on, after you’ve applied makeup will ensure that harsh chemicals won’t be applied directly onto the jewelry. As the saying goes, jewelry completes a look and it should be put on last so you can fully take in your appearance and because it helps your jewelry’s condition.

On the topic of harsh chemicals, using some cleaners will negatively affect your jewelry. As illogical as it sounds that cleaners can be bad, you should be wary.

Wearing it where is appropriate is also best. As alluded to above, pools, spas, and beaches are probably not a good idea. Neither is donning little pearls or having a necklace on while you exercise because your sweat will be full of salt which corrodes silver. Taking anything you have on or in when you’re heading to bed is also advised and it can quite easily be damaged or even hurt you.
