Is Your Art Authentic? 6 Questions to Ask an Authenticator

Is that beautiful “original” hanging in your living room authentic?

According to Columbia Law School, some experts estimate that as many as 40% of artwork sales involve forgeries. Statistically, there’s a two-in-five chance that your “original” is actually a fake.

Forgeries are more common than most art buyers realize, say art collectors and experts. Regardless of the artwork’s origin, purported provenance, or cost, you need to ascertain its authenticity.

That process begins with a credible authenticator. You’ll want to ask that person some questions:

1. Do You Use Authentication Software?

Art authentication isn’t solely about intuition. Modern authenticators increasingly use sophisticated, algorithm-driven software “trained” to detect inconsistencies, variations, or flaws that suggest foul play. Eric Postma, a professor at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, shared his cutting-edge software with PBS NOVA back in 2008. His proudest achievement: ferreting out the famed Wacker forgery, one of history’s most vexing.

2. What Other Methods Do You Use?

Algorithmic software is just one of many technological tools in an authenticator’s belt. Reputable authenticators like the International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR) use “X-radiography, infrared reflectography, pigment or media testing, fiber analysis,” and other techniques. A bigger toolbelt is usually better.

3. Can You Authenticate Any Artist’s Work?

Some authenticators focus on a relative handful of prominent artists or discrete periods of art history. Others are more versatile. If you’re in possession of an obscure but potentially valuable work, you’ll need to do your due diligence to find someone capable of accurate authentication.

4. Will You Alter the Work in Any Way?

It goes without saying that your work is worth more intact than altered, regardless of its true origins. Before signing an authentication contract, confirm with the authenticator that they won’t damage or alter the work in any way. Some single-artist foundations are known to stamp purported forgeries, denying their owners the right to second opinions.

5. Is an Original Necessarily Authentic?

Can an original be inauthentic?

When a work is genuine — actually created by he or she who claimed to create it — it’s by definition an original. But that doesn’t mean it’s meant for prime time. Every great artist has a “B-roll” of sketches, drafts, larks, and the like. When they pass on, opportunistic relatives or estate managers often try to sell them off, contrary to their likely intent. It’s important to know when you’re in possession of a “work” that was never supposed to see the light of day.

6. How Much Do You Charge?

This isn’t a very creative question, but he answer is important to know up front. Many authenticators charge non-refundable deposits simply for agreeing to consider the work. Once the piece is accepted for authentication, there’s likely to be another charge — possibly refundable and held in escrow, possibly not. During authentication, the authenticator may incur additional expenses, depending on the techniques used or the amount of research required; these are typically passed on to the owner or agent. Final payment is due after issuance of an official report, regardless of its findings.

What is Modernism: A Brief History

Modernism stemmed from the Industrial revolution, a time where rapid changes to the landscape at the hands of manufacturing, transportation and changes to the urban landscape as city centres began to prosper. Before this time artists were commissioned to produce art depicting scenes from the bible or mythology; but as the landscape changed there was new inspiration and artists begun to take influence from their surroundings. This was perceived as a reaction from the past and this style of art was centred around innovation, experimentation and the embracing of new materials and colour, to create artwork reflective of the time.

Modernism reflected changes in society, the experimentation of colour and lines and a tendency towards abstract depiction is reminiscent in the works of Antoni Gaudi, scattered throughout Barcelona.

At the end of the 19th century, Barcelona was beginning to transform and its’ culture was transforming, in Barcelona, the urban landscape was developing and there was a significant increase in the quantity of buildings being developed. The return of the ‘los indianos’, Spaniards that were returning home with their fortunes and the modern lifestyle influences from Latin America, who were keen to bring around changes.

Barcelona’s economic prosperity and the rise of the bourgeoisie was clearly evident. The Passeig de Gracia is a road that unites the old and new town and this is the destination that depicts so much of the work Antoni Gaudi. This area became a desirable location for the Catalan middle classes to spend their time and money in the abundance of luxury shops. The wealthiest members of society wanted to build their houses as demonstration of their wealth.

Josep Batllo was a wealthy textile business owner, he bought a bland and dreary building and enlisted the services of Antoni Gaudi to transform the building into something more prominent and bold, the result created one of the most iconic buildings of the modernism movement. This movement is credited with development of Barcelona. The development of the building known as Casa Battlo in the Passeig de Gracia is a celebration of Gaudi and he is credited as one of the most dynamic of this movement.

Caso Battlo embodies typical modernist and Gaudi style. Modernist architecture is characterised by the use of curved lines, merging the functional and the aesthetic of a building, the use of plant and animal symbols, asymmetry and a more organic style and shape. Modernism embraces the use of colour and the use of new materials incorporated with existing is typical of this style.

Caso Battlo, has a fantastical and imaginative façade with the use of glass and stone, wavy lines and covered in a rainbow of cleared mosaics in colours of the sea and sand made from glass and ceramics. The roof is shaped like the back of large scaled animal, often likened to a dragon, the ornamental spine forms the top of the building.  The main gallery overlooks passersby on the Passeig de Gracia and a full panorama of the outside view is possible running the whole width of the room. The interior pillars are decorated with modernist floral designs. Balconies adorn the exterior projecting outward over the pavement. Much like Gaudi’s work Caso Batllo is an organic and colourful representation of the time, a representation of a creature adorning the pavement.

Donald Trump’s Controversial Travel Ban Comes into Effect on June 30

President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban comes into effect on June 30 and people from six mainly Muslim countries and all refugees now face tougher US entry due to.

According to the new order, people without “close” family or business relationships in the US could be denied visas and barred entry.

The rules apply to people from Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, as well as to all refugees.

Lawyers took up positions as US airports, offering free advice.

However, there was no sign of the chaos that affected travelers when the first version of the ban was brought in at a few hours’ notice in January.

That is because the executive order does not affect people who already have valid visas or green cards.

US Travel Ban: White House Sets New Criteria for Visa Applicants from Six Muslim Countries

The Department of Homeland Security said it expected “business as usual at our ports of entry”.

The Supreme Court ruling on June 26 upheld the temporary ban, a key Trump policy.

However, the judges provided a major exception, for those who have “a credible claim of a bona fide relationship” with someone in the US.

The effect is that citizens of the affected countries with a close relative in the US, such as a spouse, parent, child or sibling, will potentially be allowed in.

In a last minute change, the Trump administration extended the definition of close family to include fiancés.

However grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces are not considered to be “bona fide” relations.

Moments before the ban began at 20:00 Washington time on June 29, it emerged that the state of Hawaii had asked a federal judge for clarification.

Hawaii’s attorney general has argued that the definition of “close family” is too narrow and may improperly prevent people from travelling to the US.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said it would be closely monitoring the guidance and implementation of the order.

The Supreme Court is expected to make a final decision on the ban when its next session begins in October.

Can Brookhaven come back to its senses?

Municipalities should create an environment where their citizens can live happily.

Brookhaven does not currently seem to have such common sense.

A bronze statue called the “Statue of Peace” will debut in a Brookhaven city park on June 30th. The name sounds quite nice, but there are two big problems with this statue.

Park risks becoming a place for political propaganda

On the 19th, “Reporter Newspaper” reported on some citizen’s opposition to the statue’s installation. Looking at the photos featured in this article, few people are likely to imagine a normal park where children run around. In a beautiful green environment, a mysterious statue of a girl is suddenly about to appear.

This statue is modeled after women called comfort women. Comfort women are women who care for soldiers fighting on the front lines during a war. In other words, these women provide sexual services to soldiers. Their purpose is to resolve unfulfilled desires and to help soldiers concentrate on battle. The statue to debut in Brookhaven is modeled after Korean women who provided services to Japanese soldiers during World War II.

“It is compatible with the theme and imagery of the memorial”. This statement was made by Burke Brennan, the city’s spokesperson. Does he mean to say that “women who provide sexual services” are the appropriate theme for a quiet green place?

Furthermore, the comfort women topic sparking discussion actually violates South Korea’s international pledge. The problem of comfort women has long created a rift in South Korean-Japanese diplomatic relations. However, almost one and a half years ago, South Korea and Japan signed an international treaty. They put a stop to the issue of comfort women, which had become a wall between the two countries. They signed an international pledge stating that Japan would once again pay reparations to South Korea and issue an official apology, and that neither country would ever again bring up this topic. But establishing a comfort woman statue in support of South Koreans’ claims will increase tension between South Korea and Japan. By getting involved in this political dispute, Brookhaven is about to once again divide these two Asian countries. There will likely be less visitors to the park because of the installation of this statue. One can imagine the strange scenario of the park being visited only by South Koreans.

South Korean prostitution encroaches on US

New York, Texas, Georgia, Indiana. These are places where South Korean prostitutes have been exposed. The Department of State report on the eradication of human trafficking stated that at 25%, Korean women made up the largest percentage of foreign female prostitutes in the US. One rumor raises concern that wave may have reached Brookhaven. That rumor involves the close relationship of a certain strip club and a South Korean organization in Atlanta.

There is no one in Brookhaven who doesn’t know about this club, called “Pink Pony.” Strip clubs are prohibited in this city, but Pink Pony has remained in business by paying the police something called a “patrol fee.” At the beginning of this year, a prostitution incident involving Pink Pony occurred in the neighboring Sandy Springs. Also, the South Korean organization in Atlanta has only one goal. That is to establish a statue for comfort women. They actually tried to have a statue installed in Atlanta, but were refused and failed.

Pink Pony is given special permission to operate illegally, and then a comfort woman statue is suddenly installed in a city with a calm atmosphere. What these two things have in common is this Atlanta South Korean organization. It is difficult to explain this as a coincidence.

Top Republicans Disapprove Donald Trump’s Attack on Mika Brzezinski

Senior Republicans have joined condemnation of President Donald Trump over an attack he made on Twitter against prominent journalist Mika Brzezinski.

Donald Trump called Mika Brzezinski “low IQ crazy Mika”, in response to disparaging remarks about him on an MSNBC show.

The president also referred to her “bleeding badly from a facelift” and assailed her co-presenter Joe Scarborough.

Senator Lindsey Graham said Donald Trump’s remarks were “beneath the office” of president.

Lindsey Graham said the tweet “represents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America”.

“Please just stop. This isn’t normal,” tweeted fellow Republican Senator Ben Sasse.

Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan also joined the criticism, saying: “I don’t see that as an appropriate comment. What we’re trying to do around here is improve the tone, the civility of the debate. This obviously doesn’t help.”

MSNBC said it was “a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job”.

However, the White House sprang to President Trump’s defense.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told Fox News: “I don’t think that the president has ever been someone that gets attacked and doesn’t push back.

“People on that [MSNBC] show have personally attacked him many times. This is a president who fights fire with fire and certainly will not be allowed to be bullied by liberal media and the liberal elites within the media, or Hollywood or anywhere else.”

Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough co-present the MSNBC’s Morning Joe, which has increasingly derided President Trump since he took office.

In recent weeks, Joe Scarborough has called Donald Trump a “bumbling dope”, resembling “a kid who pooped in his pants”, while Mika Brzezinski has mocked members of the administration as “lobotomized”.

President Trump tweeted on June 29: “I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore).”

He accused “low I.Q. Crazy Mika” and “Psycho Joe” of “insisting on joining me” at his Mar-a-Lago Florida golf resort over three days at New Year’s Eve.

“She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!” the president added.

Democrat Nancy Pelosi called Donald Trump’s tweets “sexist, an assault on the freedom of the press & an insult to all women”.

Mika Brzezinski is the daughter of the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was an aide to presidents Carter and Johnson, while Joe Scarborough is a former Republican congressman. Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough are engaged to each other.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion reportedly told police she did not see the couple’s car and she was driving slowly.

Venus Williams’ lawyer Malcolm Cunningham told CNN in a statement: “Ms Williams entered the intersection on a green light. The police report estimates that Ms Williams was travelling at 5mph when Mrs. Barson crashed into her.

Sony Music Resumes Vinyl Production

Sony Music has announced it will start pressing its own vinyl releases again for the first time since 1989.

The company will resume in-house domestic vinyl production at a Japanese factory south-west of Tokyo by March 2018.

Sony Music is one of the big three global record companies.

The move comes amid renewed demand for old-fashioned black plastic records, which now occupy a key market niche.

At one time, the vinyl format had been expected to disappear after the rise of CDs, digital downloads and streaming.

During vinyl’s long decline from the late 1980s onwards, many record factories closed down, with production confined to a few specialist independent companies.

However, this year, global vinyl revenue is expected to hit $1billion, with many consumers swearing by its supposedly superior sound quality.

Kesha’s Sony Music Slavery Case Dismissed by New York Court

Vinyl records have been growing in popularity again in recent years, boosted by events such as Record Store Day in April every year, for which record companies produce special limited-edition singles and albums.

Sony Music’s move comes a few months after it equipped its Tokyo studio with a cutting lathe, used to produce the master discs needed for manufacturing vinyl records.

It has not yet said which titles it will be pressing in vinyl, but big sellers in the format these days are a mixture of classic back-catalogue items and modern releases by new bands.

Value Adding: Home Improvements to Consider to Attract Real Estate Buyers

Before you start pulling out everything, think about your house need some make over. Reasons may differentiate the things you need to do if you aim to improve the value of your home.

If you intend to sell your house, then your renovations must somehow add value to its costs. This home improvement becomes an investment and is aiming towards an increase in saleability.

If you want to compete and have your house as marketable as ever, never miss out these easy home improvement ideas.

Fix the Floors

According to surveys the most damaged part of a house are the floors. Fixing this would sizably add up a value towards the marketability of your home. You can consider putting tiles to add texture and color and print to your home. Tiles are a good way to produce a more polished and elegant feel in spaces like your bathroom or kitchen.

Nicely Paint the Walls

Again our intention here is to add up value to your house, so it becomes more attractive to potential buyers. When painting the walls forget about your desire for it to reflect your personality or mood.

The best advice is to paint your walls with neutral colors. This thing is important because it will help those who are buying your home have a bright idea to incorporate their personal preference when they are moving in. Other people are not good at imagining colors and spaces.

Darker Grout on Bathroom Tiles

architecture, bathroom, contemporary

There is no other way to impress your buyers when it comes to presenting your bathroom but to have it clean and free of any stain. Attain this by manically scrubbing every inch of your bathroom. After you’re done removing the unnecessaries, consider putting dark grouts. It provides more emphasis and cleaner look especially when you do have white-colored tiles.

Spruce Up Your Garden

daisies, flowers, garden

You can convince your potential buyers to buy the impression of what is inside looks goods same as the outside. Transform your garden by cutting the grass in your lawn, repainting the paint. The cheapest way to put more effects is to put a plant or to create a landscape as a minor detail.

The main thing is, in every presentation, the first impression lasts, and it is always about how it looks from the outside.

Consider Checking the Roof

If there’s a part most likely unattended, it was the roof. You’ll never want any prospective buyers to be surprised that after they bought your house, they are then facing problems like leaks from the ceiling.

Put Carpets to Add More Details

Putting elegant rugs is one of the tricks and are a relatively cheap way to increase the value of your house. Carpets can bring luxurious detailing to the floors of any part of the house. Consider placing one with a dull color which is in line with the theme of your home, and you need to avoid ones with additional patterns.

Takeaway

Home improvement for the purpose of selling your house may take a little of investing. This move can add up a pretty nice market value and can increase the marketability of your home. Paying attention to details and those things that are often missed out can produce unexpected gains. Put more value on what you are offering to gain more returns.

US Travel Ban: White House Sets New Criteria for Visa Applicants from Six Muslim Countries

0

The US has set new criteria for visa applicants from six mainly Muslim countries and all refugees, requiring them to have a “close” family or business tie to the United States.

The new rules, affecting people from Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, come into force on June 29.

They were issued after the Supreme Court partially restored President Donald Trump’s travel ban.

Donald Trump’s controversial executive order had been blocked by lower courts.

According to the new rules, for the next 90 days those without a close relationship – defined as a parent, spouse, child, son or daughter-in-law, or sibling – will not be able to enter the US.

The definition of “close” relationships excludes grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family and grandchildren.

Also exempt from the new rules are those with business or educational ties to the US.

However, the guidelines specifically state that the relationship must be formal, documented and formed in ordinary course, rather than for the purpose of evading the executive order.

Trump’s New Travel Ban: Judge James Robart Declines to Issue Emergency Order to Halt Implementation

Those who already hold valid visas are not affected. Dual nationals who travel on their passport from the unaffected country will also be allowed entry.

The rules come into effect at 20:00 Washington time.

However, lawyers both for and against the ban have warned that the new restrictions – which will remain in place until the Supreme Court issues a final ruling – could open the door to a flood of legal challenges.

However, the Supreme Court will not be reviewing the case until October – which will mean the 90-day period will be largely done.

The court also approved the 120-day ban on refugees entering the US, allowing the government to bar entry to refugee claimants who do not have any “bona fide relationship” with an American individual or entity.

Trump Immigration Order: Justin Trudeau Does Not Agree with Refugee Ban

Donald Trump’s administration has put a cap on the number of refugees it is willing to accept at 50,000, which the State Department said would be reached in the next two weeks.

Rights groups have been fighting President Trump’s executive order for the last five months.

President Trump said the order was needed to stop terrorists entering the US, but critics said it was a ban on Muslims.

The order was first signed in February, but was blocked by the courts. A revised order was halted by a judge in Hawaii just hours before it was supposed to go into force in March.

President Donald Trump called the court’s decision a “victory for our national security.

President Xi Jinping Makes First Visit to Hong Kong

0

China’s President Xi Jinping is making his first visit to Hong Kong as leader.

His visit marks 20 years since Hong Kong was handed back to China by Britain.

The highly symbolic visit comes amid an increasingly tense political climate.

Official celebrations are planned, as well as large protests from pro-democracy and pro-Beijing camps.

Several well-known activists were arrested on the eve of Xi Jinping’s arrival.

The golden sculpture of a bauhinia flower – Hong Kong’s emblem – by the city’s harbor was a gift from China.

President Xi Jinping arrived for the three-day visit with his wife Peng Liyuan at Hong Kong’s main Chek Lap Kok airport. The couple was welcomed by a marching band and children waving flags.

China to stop issuing multiple entry Hong Kong visas

In a brief speech on the tarmac, President Xi said Hong Kong was “always in my heart”.

Beijing’s central government “has always been a strong backer of Hong Kong” and “will, as always, support Hong Kong’s economic development and improvement of people’s lives”.

President Xi also said Beijing was “willing to work with all sectors of Hong Kong’s society in maintaining Hong Kong’s extraordinary journey these past 20 years”, and would “ensure ‘one country, two systems’ will continue with stability”.

Hong Kong was handed back from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

Beijing agreed to govern it under “one country, two systems”, granting the city its own legal system, limited democracy with multiple political parties, and rights like freedom of assembly and free speech.

However, China’s growing influence has been met with unease and concerns that the mainland could undermine Hong Kong’s more politically liberal traditions.

Activists have been campaigning for years for Hong Kong to have more political freedom.

Time has said there was no March 1, 2009 issue of Time, and Donald Trump did not feature on the magazine’s cover that year.

A spokesperson said the magazine had asked the Trump Organization to remove the fake cover.

The Washington Post, which first reported the story, said the mock-up had been displayed in two spots at Donald Trump’s resort in Doral, outside Miami.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court Attacked by Helicopter

A helicopter has dropped grenades on Venezuela’s Supreme Court in what President Nicolás Maduro called a “terrorist attack”.

Footage on social media shows a police helicopter circling over Caracas before shots and a loud bang are heard.

A police officer said to have piloted the stolen aircraft issued a statement denouncing the “criminal government”. His whereabouts are unknown.

The attack comes after mass protests against the political and economic crisis.

The Supreme Court is regularly criticized by the Venezuelan opposition for its rulings which bolster Nicolas Maduro’s hold on power.

Venezuela Opposition Sets Up Roadblocks and Demands Early Elections

In an address from the presidential palace, Nicolas Maduro said the helicopter had flown over the Supreme Court and also the justice and interior ministries.

Officials quoted by Reuters said four grenades were dropped on the court and 15 shots had been fired at the interior ministry.

No injuries were reported but President Maduro said “a social event” had been taking place at the Supreme Court and the attack could have caused “dozens of deaths”. One of the grenades failed to detonate, he added.

Nicolas Maduro has placed the military on alert.

“I have activated the entire armed forces to defend the peace,” he said.

“Sooner or later, we are going to capture that helicopter and those who carried out this terror attack.”

The police officer identified himself as Oscar Pérez in video statements posted on the social media platform Instagram.

Appearing in military fatigues and flanked by armed, masked men in uniform, he appealed to Venezuelans to oppose “tyranny”.

Venezuela Opposition Leaders Stage General Strike

“We are a coalition of military employees, policemen and civilians who are looking for balance and are against this criminal government,” he said.

“We don’t belong to any political tendency or party. We are nationalists, patriots and institutionalists.”

Oscar Pérez said the “fight” was not against the security forces but “against the impunity of this government. It is against tyranny”.

It is not clear how much support, if any, the officer has.

Nicolas Maduro said the pilot had worked for former Interior and Justice Minister Miguel Rodriguez Torres, but was no longer with him.

IMF Cuts US Economy Growth Forecasts

The IMF has cuts its growth forecasts for the US economy due to uncertainty about White House policies.

The organization now expects growth of 2.1% in 2017 and 2018, against earlier estimates of 2.3% in 2017 and 2.5% in 2018.

The forecast is also below the 3% rate targeted by the White House.

Proposals such as cuts to spending on programs that benefit low and middle income households could lead to even slower growth, the IMF warned.

“The consultation revealed differences on a range of policies and left open questions as to whether the administration’s proposed policy strategies are best suited to achieve their intended purpose,” the IMF said.

US Economy Adds 211,000 Jobs in April 2017

The US is enjoying its third longest economic expansion since 1850.

However, the US is having trouble adjusting to the challenges produced by technology and demographic changes, the IMF said.

The US economy is also “effectively” at full employment, making further growth difficult, the IMF said. Meanwhile poverty and income divisions have inhibited demand.

The organization said it supported ideas such as tax reform, family leave policies and investment in infrastructure as a way to boost growth.

US Economy Slows Dramatically in Q1 2017

However, the IMF cautioned against some of the other measures supported by the Trump administration.

It urged the US to preserve the current system of financial oversight, maintain a commitment to free trade and retain recent gains in health insurance coverage.

The IMF’s earlier forecasts had assumed the economy would receive a boost from the Trump administration’s policies, but it has now dropped those assumptions.

The IMF said: “During the Article IV consultation it became evident that many details about these plans are still undecided.

“Given these policy uncertainties, the IMF’s macroeconomic forecast uses a baseline assumption of unchanged policies.”

A Career On The Open Road

0

A career in life is one of those things that can put a great amount of pressure on ourselves. We might second-guess our choices; we might feel pressured to jump straight out of college into a degree, we might chase pay at the cost of happiness. These things mean a career change is likely something that will happen in your lifetime – especially so if you have rushed into a decision. You might want happiness; you might want more flexibility. You might even want to do something else with your life. If you’re looking for freedom, why not consider a career built on long stretches of open road in some of the most rewarding fields known to mankind. Being a truck driver might something you’re looking to do.

Lorry Transport Travel Trucking Road Truck

(source)

As valuable as your choice is, it’s not the be all and end all – becoming a truck driver takes serious work and skills. You can’t just choose to be it and find yourself in the cab on the open road. You’ll need to work your way into a role. Logistics firms need drivers that they can trust, so you’ll need to be someone that they can trust if you want to drive a truck for a career! And hey, this role isn’t for everyone. If you don’t like being behind the wheel, you need to consider a different path – especially if you don’t like driving long-haul (think cross country). Not only that, but this is a solitary role, you’ll be on your own, and you won’t often be in big cities. You’ll have to be totally 100% prepared to be spending time with yourself.

You have to ensure you’re a responsible driver as well – accidents do happen on the road, but driving a truck is relatively safe – you need to be more worried about the smaller cars and motorcycles around you. You need to be aware of the road and aware of the vast power you are controlling, and you need to pay extra diligence to your driving, because it won’t be you that gets hurt in an accident. As for other things, you’ll need to nail down the numbers of a truck accident attorney, roadside repairs and all sorts of other services as a life on the road can bring up some surprising situations. It is not for everyone, especially not for those who dislike driving.

Truck driving isn’t just about pushing the pedal to the floor and driving from A to B. It’s going to require an intricate knowledge of road law and networks, it’s going to require communication. It’s going to ask a lot of your abilities not just as a driver, but concentrating for hours and hours at a time without a break. Certainly, you can find trucking roles that see you return home at the end of each day, but you’ll find a lot of long-haul jobs that could last for months. You might be responsible for loading the truck on your own at some points as well – so understand your role and make sure you meet the requirements.

ObamaCare Repeal Bill: Some 22 Million Americans Could Lose Health Insurance over Next Decade

According to a congressional report published on June 26, some 22 million Americans could lose their health insurance over the next decade under a Senate bill to replace ObamaCare.

The non-partisan Congressional Budgetary Office (CBO) said the bill would reduce the budget deficit.

Similar legislation passed by the House was also said to leave millions uninsured. Some Republicans have voiced reservations about the plan.

However, the White House disputed the CBO’s figures.

Responding to the report, it said: “The CBO has consistently proven it cannot accurately predict how healthcare legislation will impact insurance coverage.”

House to Hold Vote on ObamaCare Repeal Bill

The report is a review of draft legislation unveiled by the Republican Party last week.

It is unlikely to be approved by Democrats, who see the proposals as cruel and unfair.

The CBO said that 15 million more people would be uninsured by 2018 under the proposed legislation than under current law, largely because the penalty for not having insurance would be eliminated.

President Donald Trump’s party is struggling to secure the 50 votes it needs to get its bill through the Senate when it comes to the floor.

The Senate bill would slash taxes for the wealthy offering less help for working families to buy medical insurance.

Republicans have rejected the notion that anyone will die as a result of their healthcare plan.

The Long Road Back: Recovering After An Accident

No matter how well planned we think our lives are, sometimes disaster strikes, an unexpected event which can change our lives forever. You ask yourself, “why me,” but there are no easy answers. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and we are left to pick up the pieces.

If you have been through a distressing situation, you know that sometimes there are no words that can help, especially so close to the moment.  However, there is always hope, and if you have suffered in the past, you may have  the experience necessary to help others going through the same.

In this article, we are specifically talking about being involved in an accident, but there is advice here for anybody who has suffered a trauma, or for any one of us who could one day face the pain involved.
I hope the advice given here can help you.

Understand traumatic stress

You may never understand why an accident happened to you, other than you being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, it is possible to move on with your life when you understand the stress you are going through. Your body may have been hurt physically, but mentally and emotionally you are going to suffer.

Have a look at this website, which covers some of the emotions you are going to face, and how you can eventually overcome them. Time does heal, and this includes your emotional wounds as well as your physical ones. There may always be scars, but the bulk of the pain will go away as you move on with your life.

Legal justice

No amount of money can replace the stress of the trauma you have been through, but as you seek to understand the meaning to what happened, seeking a legal resolution may help your peace of mind.

You may risk a loss of finance from taking time off work to recover, and in the event of a car accident, your vehicle may have been written off. Therefore, seek legal advice. Auto accident lawyers are specialists in car injuries, and understand how the recklessness of others has affected your life. If the accident happened at work, you shouldn’t be afraid to take your employers to court as it is illegal for them to fire you. Seek justice, and receive the compensation you deserve to help you move on with your life.
Focus on the positive

There are positive things in your life, even though it may be difficult to see through the pain. Think about the people who love and care for you. Be thankful for having the chance to continue in life, despite the new challenges you may have to face. You don’t have to go it alone so draw close to your family and friends, and see a counselor if you have troubling thoughts.

Dwelling on the negative is not going to help you in the healing process. Be kind to yourself, accept what cannot be changed and be grateful for the gift of life.

Salvador Dali’s Body to Be Exhumed to Obtain Samples for Paternity Suit

Salvador Dali’s body has to be exhumed to get samples for a paternity suit, a judge in Madrid has ruled.

A Spanish woman, Maria Pilar Abel Martínez, who was born in 1956, said her mother, a maid, had a clandestine affair with Salvador Dali in 1955.

In ordering the exhumation, the judge said there were no biological remains or personal objects of the surrealist painter to be used in the paternity test.

Salvador Dali died in Spain 1989, at the age of 85.

The artist was buried in the theater and museum he designed himself, in his home town of Figueres in the north-eastern Catalonia region.

Maria Pilar Abel Martínez, a tarot card reader who was born in Girona, made the claim for the first time in 2015.

The woman said her mother, Antonia, had worked for a family that spent time in Cadaqués, next to where Salvador Dali had a home.

Her mother then left her job in 1955, moved to a different city and married another man.

Maria Pilar Abel Martínez claimed that her mother told her several times that Salvador Dalí was her father, on many occasions in front of others.

“The only thing I’m missing is a moustache,” she once said, according to El Mundo.

At the time of the alleged affair, Salvador Dalí was married to his muse Gala, born Elena Ivanovna Diakonova. The couple had no children.

The decision also cites that Maria Pilar Abel Martínez underwent two paternity tests, both in 2007, but never received the results.

Her legal action is against the Spanish state, to which Salvador Dalí left his estate. The court said the decision could be appealed.

If the woman is confirmed to be Salvador Dali’s daughter, she could use his surname and be entitled to part of his estate – but Spanish media say she would have to legally request it.

Maria Pilar Abel Martínez’s lawyer said there was no date for the exhumation, but that it could happen as soon as July. The Gala Dalí Foundation has not commented.

PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018: North Korea Rejects South Korea’s Offer to Form Unified Team

North Korea has rejected South Korea’s offer to form a unified team for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in backed proposals for a collaboration after it was suggested by sports minister Do Jong-hwan.

However, North Korean International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Chang Un has dismissed the idea – saying there was not time to negotiate a deal.

The PyeonChang Games, in South Korea, will take place from February 9 to 25.

North Korea and OSuth Korea have played in the same team before – at the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships.

However, Chang Un told local media: “It took us 22 rounds of talks to set up that joint [table tennis] team… it took us five months.

“That’s the reality we face.”

Winter Games 2018: South Korea Olympic Chair Cho Yang-ho Resigns

South Korea’s sports minister had suggested a joint ice hockey team – even going as far as to suggest they might allow the north to host skiing events – to help make the 2018 games a “peace Olympics”.

President Moon Jae-in, who advocates greater dialogue with South Korea’s neighbors, then put forward the idea of a wider unified Olympic squad.

How Chang Un said the games should not be used for political purposes, adding: “As an expert of the Olympics, it is a little late to be talking about co-hosting. It’s easy to talk about co-hosting, but it is never easy to solve practical problems for that. It’s the same for forming a joint team for ice hockey.”

South Korean officials have said they continue to be open to the idea.

The two sides remain technically at war as the fighting at the end of the Korean War in 1953 did not end with a peace treaty. Tensions have risen recently following repeated missiles tests carried out by Pyongyang.

These Mistakes Are Making Your Business Look Unprofessional

0

Presenting a professional image when you run a business needs to be one of your top priorities. If you don’t look like you want to be taken seriously, people are likely to pass you by and consider other businesses instead. There are so many small ways you can fail to look like a professional business, as well as bigger mistakes you can make. Avoiding these problems will give your business more of a legitimate air, so people will be more willing to consider it. If you’re not sure if your business looks as professional as it could, here are some of the things you might be doing wrong.

Sloppy Documents and Communications

The way you communicate with people can have a huge effect on how they see you. When you talk to someone in person or even over the phone, it can seem easier to make sure you’re projecting a professional image. But if you’re communicating through the written word, it can make it seem a little more difficult. Your emails, documents, and even instant messages need to carry the right tone and look good too. You can improve the documents you send with tools like invoice templates to help you be consistent. You can include your logo and a smart header and layout. Using an email signature is another way to be more consistent with your professional image.

Amateur Graphics and Images

Professional graphics are vital for any business that you want people to take seriously. While you might think you can draw up some simple graphics on your own, they’re often not as good as you think they are. Even when you pay someone else to do them, it’s important to make sure you don’t try to cut costs too much. If you’re only willing to spend a small amount of money, you’re not going to get the best quality. A professional logo is the least you need.

No Domain Name

This might seem like an obvious mistake to make, but many business owners don’t realize how important it is. People who might have come to the internet late often don’t pay attention to this step, in particular. The lack of a dedicated domain name makes your business look either out of date or very new. Even if you have a domain name, many people then fail to extend it to their email address. Asking people to email a Hotmail or Yahoo email address doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in your business.

No Business Contact Details

Does your contact page list a mobile phone number and your personal address and email address? Maybe you don’t even have a contact page. Making sure you have these details for your business makes you look better to your website visitors and to search engines. You can get a dedicated phone number using Google Voice and use a virtual address service if your business is based from your home.

Don’t make these mistakes if you want your business to look professional. Pay close attention to how other businesses improve their images.

Takata Files for Bankruptcy in US and Japan

Takata has filed for bankruptcy protection in the US and Japan.

The Japanese car parts maker is facing billions of dollars in liabilities over its defective air bags, which have been linked to at least 17 deaths worldwide.

Some of the air bags contained faulty inflators which expanded with too much force, spraying metal shrapnel.

Takata Agrees to Pay $1BN Settlement over Exploding Air Bags Scandal

Key Safety Systems (KSS) has bought all of Takata’s assets, apart from those relating to the air bags.

The $1.6 billion deal was announced after Takata filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US, with similar action taken in Japan.

Takata Airbag: Honda to Recall Additional 20 Million Faulty Airbags

KSS CEO Jason Luo: “Although Takata has been impacted by the global airbag recall, the underlying strength of its skilled employee base, geographic reach, and exceptional steering wheels, seat belts and other safety products have not diminished.”

More than 100 million cars with Takata air bags, including around 70 million vehicles in the US, have been recalled since concerns first emerged in 2007. It is the biggest safety recall in automotive history.

What To Look For When Choosing A Nursing Home For Your Parents

0

The final years of anyone’s life can be challenging. There can be physical health issues that result in a loss of mobility and this can severely limit how you can get about. If you have an elderly relative (perhaps a parent or grandparent) who is experiencing this at the moment it can be very distressing to witness. Eventually, these health issues may make it impossible for them to live safely in their own homes.

Other senior citizens suffer from mental health issues. Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are both increasing in incidence and are most common in people aged over 70 years of age. Sufferers become confused and disorientated and it can be very frightening for them to live alone. You may have space in your home and the time to look after them yourself. This is a big decision and something that you as a family must decide. However, your work and family commitments, or the size of your house, may mean that you cannot do this.

This is when you have to make the difficult decision to move them into residential accommodation. Nearly 1.4 million people in the U.S. live in nursing homes so this is a common issue facing many families. There are many nursing homes to choose from and you will want to pick the best one for your relative. Here are some things that you should look out for when you visit a nursing home.

Check on the food

Food is one of the great pleasures of life and can become even more important as you get older. If you are not busy doing other things, your next meal becomes very important. It is vital that it is something that you can enjoy. There are two things that affect how enjoyable the meal is. They are where you eat it and what you eat.

Take a good look at the dining room. Is it a pleasant environment to enjoy a meal? Would you be allowed to visit your relative and enjoy a meal with them? It is also important that your relative has the option of eating in their own room sometimes if they don’t feel like venturing into the dining area. Is the seating pleasant and is the dining room light and airy?

The food itself is also vitally important. It needs to be both palatable and well presented. It also needs to be suitable for each resident. Some may have allergies, some may be on low-sodium diets and some may need pureed food. All needs and requirements must be catered for.

It is also important that a record is kept of what the resident has eaten. Anorexia is a real problem in some elderly people. They lose their appetite and simply stop eating. This needs to be detected early on and interventions put in place.

Listen carefully when you are in the nursing home

Use all your senses to make up your mind about the home. You may hear crying out and shrieks but you should not be alarmed as this is common for residents with dementia. However, it is important to listen to how the staff talk to the residents. They should be addressing them using their names and not using names such as ‘Pops’ or ‘Gramma’ as this indicates that they have not bothered to learn the resident’s names. They should enquire how your elderly relative wants to be addressed. They may prefer a more formal ‘Mr’ or ‘Mrs’ to begin with until they begin to feel more relaxed.

What does the nursing home smell like?

This is a delicate subject. There will inevitably be some incontinent residents and this can present a challenge to the nursing home owners and employees. There will always be the odd accident but, to retain the dignity of the resident and to make it more pleasant for other residents, this situation should be controlled. If the home strongly smells, it means that the monitoring and cleaning regimes are not up to scratch.

The staff should not look stressed

If the carers are rushing around and don’t have time to talk to you, it could indicate that the nursing home is understaffed and this is a problem. It could mean that they do not have time to attend to your relative’s basic needs. It also means that they will not have the time to chat and comfort your relative and this makes a lot of difference.

Can you see any of the employees stopping and talking to the residents? Are they sharing a joke with them or taking the time to walk with them out in the garden? There have been instances where poor staffing levels have led to residents being neglected and suffering psychological or physical harm. You are perfectly within your rights to consult a nursing home injury lawyer if you suspect that this has happened to a member of your family. Your lawyer can investigate your concerns and prepare a personal injury claim if the home has failed in their duty of care. If you win your case, you will get some compensation and it sends a message to the nursing home that they have to improve their procedures.

Signs that things are going wrong

There are several signs that the care provided in a home is not up to the required standards. If several residents have physical injuries this may mean that they are being abused. It can also mean that they are experiencing trips and falls. Measures should have been taken to prevent this. Residents should not have bed sores. There are strict protocols that should be followed to prevent this from happening.

They should also look happy and content. There should be a variety of activities, both inside and outside the home, and there should be evidence that these actually take place. It is not enough for them to be written in the brochure, ask if you can visit when they are actually happening.

With the correct care, your elderly relative can enjoy their final years in a well-run nursing home.

Glastonbury 2017: Ed Sheeran Closes Festival at Pyramid Stage

Ed Sheeran has closed this year’s Glastonbury Festival at the Pyramid Stage, just six years after his debut at one of the festival’s smallest venues.

In 2011, Ed Sheeran played the solar-powered Croissant Neuf stage, playing “to about 500 people”.

On June 25, he closed the festival, attracting a much younger audience than Friday and Saturday’s headliners, Radiohead and Foo Fighters.

Ed Sheeran, 26, admitted he was “very nervous but very excited” to be there.

“For those of you who haven’t seen one of my shows before or haven’t heard one of my songs, please pretend that you know them,” the singer told the audience.

“For those of you who have, please sing all of the words.”

He added: “The aim of tonight is to lose our voices.

“I’m going to lose mine as well.”

Glastonbury 2017: Johnny Depp Appears to Threaten President Trump

The audience took Ed Sheeran up on the challenge; joining in wistfully as he sang the ballads Photograph and Thinking Out Loud.

They didn’t quite keep up, however, with the spittle-flecked Take It Back – a whirlwind of wordplay in which Ed Sheeran declared: “I’m not a rapper, I’m a singer with a flow.”

Ed Sheeran played, as he usually does, without a band; using a loop pedal to layer his vocal and guitar lines and create a backing track live, on the spot.

He also invited traditional Irish band Beoga on stage to accompany him on Nancy Mulligan, a song about his paternal grandmother.

It was a moment that reeked of cheese but, watched from the side of the stage by his grandfather, Ed Sheeran made it seem genuine.

This year saw more pop and grime acts than ever, from Charli XCX to Katy Perry; from Wiley to Stormzy.

On June 25, the festival also saw sets from Royal Blood, Courteeners, Foo Fighters, The Jacksons, Radiohead and The Killers – who played a secret show on the John Peel stage on Sunday evening.

Mental Illness Among Children – Imagination or a Fact?

0

Generally, childhood is considered to be the best part of one’s life. Children are happy and free of the stresses that concern an adult. They do not suffer from emotional problems and mental problems, as adults do. However, research has proved over and over again that children experience similar psychological problems as adults. They also suffer from clinical depression and may be at a risk of committing suicide. According to an estimate, every hour 57 children and teenagers attempt suicide and every day 18 of these children and teenagers succeed.

These glaring facts definitely prove that mental illness is not just a creative imagination of a crooked mind. This also shows that parents need to provide them the special care and attention they need in order to prevent such mental illnesses.

Although some are biological in nature, some arise due to the circumstances they have faced while they were growing up. These illnesses can be taken care of if identified on time.

Depression

Prevalent in adults, depression is not rare or uncommon in children. Research shows that one in 10 children suffer from depression during the age of 6 to 12. Here are some facts about Australia alone. Its symptoms may be similar to those in adults such as hopelessness, excessive guilt, fatigue and change in sleep patterns. However, they may not be able to communicate their feelings. You can look for behaviors such as school performance, heightened anxiety and fear and constant wringing of hands. Depression can be caused due to biological reasons or may have its link with the family environment that the child is living in. For example, a divorce among parents, loss of a parent or an abusive parent might be some reasons triggering depression. It can be treated with therapy or antidepressants.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit disorder influences the child’s ability to concentrate and learn. This is 10 times more common in boys and usually develops before the age of 7. However, it is diagnosed between 8 to 10 years of age. Symptoms include lack of concentration in running and participating in active games. The reasons can be biological or environmental. Environmental problems might include the exposure of the child to cigarette smoke and alcohol. This can be easily cured through therapy and medication.

Separation Anxiety Disorder

Separation anxiety disorder appears in children when they are separated from a parent or a sibling. It usually appears suddenly and is extreme in the sense that it may hinder the normal activities of the child. The child may refuse to go to school, leave the house alone and may shadow parents by following them around all the time. They may also have difficulty in sleeping.  The reasons may vary depending on the environment the child is exposed to or the biological characteristics. Any stressful personal experience might also trigger such a disorder. It may be cured with detailed evaluation, therapy and medication. For troubled parents, it is better to consult with a family law Sydney for child custody, family violence and divorce cases.

Although, not an exhaustive list, these are some of the typical mental illnesses prevalent in children. When identified at an early age, they can be cured and the child would live a normal life.

Gessica Notaro Returns to Work Five Months after Acid Attack

Former Miss Italy finalist Gessica Notaro has returned to work as a sea lion trainer, five months after being severely disfigured by acid thrown in her face.

The 28-year-old said that she was doing so to encourage other women to fight back against bullying.

Gessica Notaro posted a picture of herself on social media with sea lions at the aquarium where she works in east Italy.

Her former boyfriend is being prosecuted over the attack but denies any involvement.

Gessica Notaro is scheduled to host the aquarium’s night-time performances later this year at the Adriatic resort of Rimini.

She was in danger of losing the sight in her left eye in the aftermath of the attack.

Gessica Notaro has had several operations since, and her injured eye remains bandaged.

In a Facebook post, the former Miss Italy finalist said: “My strength? Here it is,” as she touched a sea lion.

Gessica Notaro’s story caught the public imagination when she revealed her suffering on social media.

In April, she went on national TV to denounce former boyfriend Jorge Edson Tavares.

“I want you to see what he did to me. This isn’t love,” Gessica Notaro said.

“While the acid ate away at my face I was on my knees praying to God to take away my beauty but at least leave me with my sight.”

Gessica Notaro broke up with Jorge Edson Tavares last summer.

After she went to police to complain that she was being stalked, a restraint order was imposed on him.

On January 10, Gessica Notaro was doused in hydrochloric acid by a man she identified as Jorge Edson Tavares.

Jorge Edson Tavares has strenuously denied any involvement in the attack.
