Donald Trump: “US President Has the Complete Power to Pardon”

Amid reports President Donald Trump is considering presidential pardons for family members, aides and even himself, he has insisted he has the “complete power” to pardon people.

Democratic Party spokesman Mark Warner has called the reports “extremely disturbing”.

The US authorities are probing possible collusion between the Trump team and Russia. Intelligence agencies think Russia tried to help Donald Trump to power.

Moscow denies this, and President Trump says there was no collusion.

The Washington Post reported on July 20 that Donald Trump and his team were looking at ways to pardon people close to him.

Presidents can pardon people before guilt is established or even before the person is charged with a crime.

Describing the reports as disturbing, Senator Mark Warner, who sits on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said “pardoning any individuals who may have been involved would be crossing a fundamental line”.

On July 22, President Trump tweeted: “While all agree the U. S. President has the complete power to pardon, why think of that when only crime so far is LEAKS against us. FAKE NEWS.”

Donald Trump also attacked “illegal leaks” following reports his attorney general discussed campaign-related matters with a Russian envoy.

Jeff Sessions Met Russian Ambassador During Donald Trump’s Campaign

The Washington Post gave an account of meetings Attorney General Jeff Sessions held with the Russian ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak. The newspaper quoted current and former US officials who cited intelligence intercepts of Sergey Kislyak’s version of the encounter to his superiors.

One of those quoted said Ambassador Kislyak spoke to Jeff Sessions about key campaign issues, including Donald Trump’s positions on policies significant to Russia.

During his confirmation hearing earlier this year, Jeff Sessions said he had no contact with Russians during the election campaign. When it later emerged he had, he said the campaign was not discussed at the meetings.

An official confirmed to Reuters the detail of the intercepts, but there has been no independent corroboration.

The officials spoken to by the Post said that Sergey Kislyak could have exaggerated the account, and cited a Justice Department spokesperson who repeated that Jeff Sessions did not discuss interference in the election.

Jeff Sessions Testimony: Attorney General Denies Having Undisclosed Meetings with Russian Officials

However, the Post‘s story was the focus of one of many tweets President Trump fired off on July 22.

“A new INTELLIGENCE LEAK from the Amazon Washington Post, this time against A.G. Jeff Sessions. These illegal leaks, like Comey’s, must stop!” the president said.

The Washington Post is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has been an occasional sparring partner for Donald Trump. “Comey” refers to James Comey, the former FBI director President Trump fired.

Earlier this week, President Trump told the New York Times he regretted hiring Jeff Sessions because he had stepped away from overseeing an inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the US election.

Jeff Sessions recused himself in March amid pressure over his meetings with Sergey Kislyak. He says he plans to continue in his role as attorney general.

Several other regular targets for Donald Trump featured in his series of tweets.

The president accused the “failing” New York Times of foiling an attempt to assassinate ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

It is not clear what President Trump was referring to, but on July 22 a US general complained on Fox News that a “good lead” on Anu Nakr al-Baghdadi was leaked to a national newspaper in 2015.

A New York Times report at the time revealed that valuable information had been extracted from a raid, but the paper stressed on July 22 that no-one had taken issue with their reporting until now.

Donald Trump again urged Republicans to “step up to the plate” and repeal and replace President Obama’s healthcare reforms, a key campaign pledge of his that has collapsed in Congress.

Ben Affleck Denies Warner Bros. Drops Him from Batman Franchise

Ben Affleck has denied rumors he is quitting as Batman after his upcoming role in Justice League.

The actor had been due to star in and direct another standalone movie – The Batman – but pulled out of directing duties in January.

After Ben Affleck’s script was also ditched by incoming director Matt Reeves, it looked like he was going to jump ship.

However, the actor denied he was leaving the franchise, saying: “Batman is the coolest part in any universe.”

“Let me very clear – I am the luckiest guy in the world. I’m so thrilled to do it,” Ben Affleck told fans at Comic-Con on July 22.

“There’s a misconception that because I wasn’t directing it, I wasn’t enthusiastic about it, but it’s amazing.”

Weird Things You Should Know About Ben Affleck And Henry Cavill Before Seeing Batman VS Superman

Ben Affleck also addressed reports that Warner Bros was working on plans to “usher out” his Batman gracefully as he is getting too old.

“I still can’t believe that after two films [Warner Bros bosses] Kevin Tsujihara, Sue Kroll and Toby Emmerich have said, <We want you to be our Batman> – and I believe them.”

Regarding War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves taking over his directing role and starting afresh with scripting, Ben Affleck said: “I would be an ape on the ground for Matt Reeves, never mind Batman.

“It’s a great time in the DC universe, so you can see why I am so excited to be Batman.”

The Warner Bros panel also featured a new Justice League trailer and confirmed that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman would be getting a sequel.

It’s unsurprising as Patty Jenkins’ movie is the biggest of the summer, taking $386 million so far in the US and $771 million around the world.

It is also the third highest-grossing Warner Bros movie ever, behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises – and the highest-grossing live action movie by a female director.

Warner Bros also confirmed it intends to make a standalone Batgirl movie and a new Green Lantern movie.

“The person was determined to be deceased. While still under investigation, the death is not considered suspicious at this time.”

Macaulay Culkin at risk of lung cancer

Arguably John Heard’s most memorable role was as Peter McCallister, the father of Macaulay Culkin‘s character in the Home Alone movies, in the 1990s.

John Heard first started acting in the 1970s, appearing on the stage, on TV and in movies.

He went on to play leading roles in movies including Cutter’s Way, C.H.U.D and Gladiator, opposite Cuba Gooding, Jr.

In 1999, John Heard was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role as Vin Makazian – a corrupt New Jersey police detective – in TV series The Sopranos.

North Korea Economy Accelerates at Its Fastest Pace in 17 Years

North Korea’s economy surged at its fastest pace in 17 years, despite sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs.

According to the Bank of Korea, North Korea’s GDP grew by 3.9% in 2016 compared with 2015.

The growth stemmed largely from mining and energy, as well as an increase in exports to China.

The US has been urging China to cut trade with North Korea as tensions mount over Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.

China is North Korea’s only major ally, trading partner and aid donor.

US Bans Traveling to North Korea

Lim Ji-hyun: Celebrity North Korean Defector Returns to Pyongyang

Last week China issued data suggesting trade with North Korea was not as strong as implied by President Donald Trump.

However, while China has stopped coal imports from North Korea, it has continued to trade iron, iron ore and other commodities.

Although North Korea doesn’t publish economic data, South Korea’s central bank releases GDP figures every year, based on data from its Ministry of Unification and the National Intelligence Service.

The 2016 GDP data is the highest growth rate since the 6.1% recorded in 1999.

The last year’s performance is a turnaround from 2015, when the North Korean economy contracted by 1.1% after a fall global commodity prices hit the value of its coal and iron ore exports.

North Korea is among the world’s poorest countries with per capita gross national income standing at 1.5 million won ($1136) a year. South Korea’s per capita income is more than twenty times that.

International tensions over North Korea’s were ramped up further last week after the test of a long-range missile, which it is believed was capable of reaching Alaska.

Audi is offering a free software upgrade for 850,000 diesel cars in order to improve emissions.

The German auto maker said the upgrade would “improve emissions behavior in real driving conditions further beyond existing legal requirements”.

Audi added it was convinced the program would counteract possible bans on diesel cars.

How Can Tensions in the Asia Pacific Region Be Addressed?

For: BlufftonToday.com

The thriving economies of countries in the Asia Pacific region remain threatened by political tensions that surface every time a sticky issue comes up. Japan and South Korea ties are less than friendly, despite both being US allies. China is at loggerheads with many of its smaller neighbors over territorial disputes and its aggressive militarization of the contested islands.

With President Trump scrapping the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal done by the previous administration, it would be wise for these Asian nations to band together, not to fight a superpower, but to find alternative solutions that would be favorable for them in light of the uncertainty of US policies that affect them.

Japan and China are two of the richest countries in the world, with the former generally viewed as “old money” and the latter as “nouveau riche.” Flattering or derogatory implications aside, it cannot be denied that both are the chief entities that make this once destitute eastern region now a powerful force in the international economic landscape.

It is therefore incumbent upon these countries’ leaders to rethink their differences and find ways to improve their relations. Achieving respectful politeness will pave the way for productive dialogues that will protect their solid global standing and safeguard the fiscal and defense forces’ stability not only for themselves but also for the other emerging Asian economies. Other than China’s military belligerence, the delusional leader of rogue nation North Korea is proceeding with his nuclearization goals, causing global agitation. Tokyo’s Abe Shinzo wields more influence in fixing the strained ties with China, his country being a long-time major US ally and a seemingly unsinkable force. But it won’t be an easy job for Abe, with the sitting US president flip-flopping on his views of Beijing’s Xi Jinping and giving the Japanese Prime Minister a politically induced headache.

Historical accounts allege that the fight for regional supremacy between the two countries already existed 1,500 years ago. China had the upper hand in geographical dimensions but Japan’s innovative progress in the 19th century and its victories in the Japan-Qing War in 1895 and over Russia in 1905 solidified its superiority over its Goliath-size neighbor. The Sino-Japanese bond was on friendlier footing in the mid-1970s to the ‘80s but events in the following decade cropped up that led to tensions that have not abated since then.

In the 1990s, nationalistic Japanese historians revised school textbooks to cast the nation in a better light and instill patriotism in the minds of the young children. Among the revisions were the downplaying of the crimes committed by the Japanese Imperial Army against its enemies in World War ll, including China, and the purported sanitization of the events that occurred in the Rape of Nanking in 1937. The number of people killed in that massacre has never been factually established and various counts put them between 40,000 and 300,000.

A thorny issue that has hounded the two countries is China’s insistence that Japan apologize for its WWll atrocities through financial compensation. But a book by author June Dreyer mentions an incontestable fact – 70 percent of Japanese aid in the 1980s went to China. The never-ending demand for apologies now does not solicit sympathy from the Japanese but has the opposite effect of annoying them.

Adding to the tensions is the continuing dispute between Tokyo and Beijing of ownership of the Senkaku Islands, or Diaoyu Islands as China calls them. The United States had given back control of the islands to Japan under the Okinawa Reversion Agreement. China, however, does not honor the agreement, insisting that the islands belongs to them. The long-held animosity escalated in 2012 when Japan purchased the set if islands from a private individual for more than 2 billion yen.

An accord that is mutually acceptable can put to rest these contentious issues if leaders Abe and Xi are open to rebuilding the damaged lines of communication. Further, Japan’s prime minister should nurture its relations with the new US administration and maintain the cordial ties it had with the previous resident of the White House. Pres. Trump’s vacillating moods now has him favoring Pres. Xi, and Abe must be careful not to offend him. Japan needs Washington and Beijing for economic and security soundness.

For its part, China should keep in mind that its current economic strength cannot continue if it repeatedly provokes other nations with its combative and hostile behavior. It should learn to respect the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration denying its rights to the Spratly Islands in favor of the Philippines. Despite the court’s ruling in July 2016, China continued building artificial reefs and a military airfield on the contested land. and ignored several countries’ requests to abide by the legal decision.

Earlier this year, three China Coast Guard ships entered the waters around Senkaku Islands, which is the subject of a Japan-China territorial dispute. The move came days after US Secretary of State James Mattis paid a visit to Japan and reaffirmed its government’s support for Japan’s claim.

Notwithstanding the recent chill in relations, Abe and Xi have vowed to resume communication and restore healthy ties when the two met on the sidelines at the G20 summit in Hamburg earlier this month.

Sean Spicer Replaced by Anthony Scaramucci as Trump’s Press Secretary

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer wants to minimize talk of divisions within the Trump administration after announcing his resignation.

Sean Spicer is reportedly stepping down because he is unhappy with President Donald Trump’s appointment of a new communications director.

However, he told Fox News he had “no regrets” about his six-month stint.

Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci has been picked for the role that Sean Spicer had partially filled.

The shake-up at the White House comes amid several investigations into alleged Russian meddling in last year’s presidential election and whether Donald Trump’s campaign team colluded with Moscow.

“The president obviously wanted to add to the team, more than anything,” Sean Spicer told interviewer Sean Hannity.

“I just thought it was in the best interest of our communications department, of our press organization, to not have too many cooks in the kitchen.

“Without me in the way, they have a fresh start, so that I’m not lurking over them.”

Sean Spicer, 45, defended President Trump’s agenda, saying it was an honor and a privilege to serve him, and hit out at what he termed “media bias”.

He said: “I was increasingly disappointed about the way the media here do their job – or don’t do their job.”

Sean Spicer also said he had told President Trump he “would stay on for a few weeks to achieve a smooth transition”, and was looking forward to spending more time with his family.

Meanwhile, President Trump wrote on Twitter: “Sean Spicer is a wonderful person who took tremendous abuse from the Fake News Media – but his future is bright!”

Sean Spicer Confronted in Apple Store

The New York Times reported that Sean Spicer had “vehemently” disagreed with the appointment of Anthony Scaramucci, which he believed to be a “major mistake”.

Sean Spicer’s often chaotic press briefings over the past six months were a cable news hit, but in recent weeks he had withdrawn from appearances in front of the camera.

In an assured debut, Sean Spicer attended Friday afternoon’s news conference to announce that Sarah Huckabee Sanders, formerly his deputy, would step into his shoes.

“I love the president and it’s an honor to be here,” Anthony Scaramucci said, adding: “He is genuinely a wonderful human being.”

Anthony Scaramucci, who has no previous experience in communications roles, paid tribute to Sean Spicer as “a true American patriot” and “incredibly gracious”.

“I hope he goes on to make a tremendous amount of money,” he added.

Anthony Scaramucci also apologized and said he had been “unexperienced” as he explained his previous criticism of Donald Trump.

In an August 2015 interview with Fox Business, Anthony Scaramucci dismissed Donald Trump as a “hack” and “an inherited money dude” with “a big mouth”.

Anthony Scaramucci is currently senior vice-president of the Export-Import Bank, a government agency which guarantees loans for foreign buyers of American exports.

Venezuela Crisis: Opposition-Controlled National Assembly Appoints Judges to Supreme Court

Venezuela’s National Assembly has appointed 33 judges to the Supreme Court, prompting accusations of an attempted power grab.

The assembly, which is controlled by the opposition, says it has the right to name and fire justices under Venezuela’s constitution.

However, the Supreme Court, which is largely made up of pro-government members, has described the move as illegal.

The opposition is stepping up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro to call early elections.

President Maduro has refused and is instead going ahead with plans to form a constituent assembly which would have the power to rewrite the constitution and bypass the National Assembly.

The impasse has left the country in a political crisis and scores of people have died in months of anti-government protests.

Following the National Assembly’s announcement, the government said it would not allow serving judges to be unseated.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court Attacked by Helicopter

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has ordered “civil and military authorities” to carry out “coercive actions” in response to the appointments, but it is unclear what that will entail.

Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Unity coalition (MUD) has called for protest marches on July 22 from seven points in the capital Caracas to the Supreme Court headquarters.

The opposition says the current justices are illegitimate, having been rushed into their positions shortly before the governing party lost its majority in 2015.

Since the opposition took over the National Assembly last year the court has consistently blocked all bills passed by Congress.

The opposition announced last week that it would appoint new judges and that it would also take the first steps to set up a national unity government. Analysts say such proposals raise the possibility of a parallel state structure.

On July 20, millions of Venezuelans joined a general strike called by the opposition.

At least three people were killed in clashes between police and protesters and there were more than 300 arrests.

Protesters barricaded roads in Caracas and other cities with rubbish and furniture.

The opposition said that 85% of the country joined the strike but President Maduro said its effect was minimal and that its leaders would be arrested.

Meanwhile, Colombia, France, Spain, the US and the EU have urged the Venezuelan government to cancel the vote for a new constituent assembly on July 30.

However, President Nicolas Maduro has rejected the calls.

US Bans Traveling to North Korea

American citizens are to be ban from traveling to North Korea.

In a statement, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said that the ban would be published next week in the Federal Register, to come into effect 30 days later.

US officials linked the move to the death of jailed American student Otto Warmbier.

Once the ban is in effect, US citizens will need special validation to travel to or within North Korea.

Otto Warmbier traveled to North Korea with Young Pioneer Tours. He was arrested in 2016 for trying to steal a propaganda sign and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was returned to the US in a coma in June and died a week later.

Koryo Tours and Young Pioneer Tours, who both operate in North Korea, revealed on July 21 that they had been told of the upcoming ban by the Swedish embassy, which acts for the US as Washington has no diplomatic relations with Pyongyang.

It appears the embassy was urging all US nationals to depart immediately and was trying to check on the number of US tourists left in North Korea.

Heather Nauert’s statement said: “Due to mounting concerns over the serious risk of arrest and long-term detention under North Korea’s system of law enforcement, the Secretary has authorized a Geographical Travel Restriction on all US nationals’ use of a passport to travelling through, or to North Korea.

“Once in effect, US passports will be invalid for travel to, through, and in North Korea, and individuals will be required to obtain a passport with a special validation in order to travel to or within North Korea.

“We intend to publish a notice in the Federal Register next week.

“The restriction will be implemented 30 days after publication.”

Otto Warmbier Dies One Week After Release from North Korea

Otto Warmbier Sentenced to 15 Years of Hard Labor in North Korea

After the death of Otto Warmbier, the China-based Young Pioneer Tours announced it would no longer take visitors from the US to North Korea.

There has been movement towards a ban for a while in the US, which increased with the Warmbier death.

In May, two congressmen introduced the North Korea Travel Control bill to cut off the foreign currency the country earns from American tourists.

The House foreign affairs subcommittee is scheduled to take up the draft legislation on July 27 but it would still have to go to the Senate. So there could be an executive order.

Some are suggesting the US is using the date the ban is set to be announced – 27 July – to cloud North Korea’s Victory Day on the same day.

North Korea only relaxed its rules for American visitors in 2010.

The state department does not keep a record of the number of American tourists.

Tour operators suggest that up to 1,000 visit every year.

Top Tips For A Successful Supplement Company

0

Staying healthy used to just mean eating well and getting a good amount of exercise. These days, the market is saturated with thousands of dietary supplements and protein shakes that can help us burn fat, build muscles and get all of the nutrition that we need. These products don’t come cheap and there are so many people out there making good money from them, so, why aren’t you one of them? The market is huge and your chances of making a successful business are pretty good. Here’s how to do it.

Wikimedia

What’s Your Niche?

Although there’s a huge market out there, that doesn’t mean you can make good money doing the same thing as everybody else. Knowing your competition is important in any business but it is especially important in the dietary supplement world. The truth is, a lot of these products are exactly the same. The pre-workouts that people love taking are often just caffeine powder and a mix of proteins. What you need to be looking at is the way that they are marketing it. Everybody is selling the same stuff, the thing that makes them a success is how they spin it, so as long as you can come up with a good angle, you should be able to make some sales.

Deal With The Right Manufacturer

When you’re selling anything that people put into their bodies, safety needs to be a priority. If anybody has an adverse reaction, that bad publicity could kill your business immediately and it’s unlikely that you’ll recover. When you’re speaking to manufacturing companies, ask them if they have patient access. That way they will be able to identify any health problems that their products cause and alter their formula accordingly. That means you can avoid any bad press and be sure that your customers are getting the best product available.

Create A Brochure

A brochure is a pretty old fashioned marketing form that doesn’t work for a lot of businesses. However, when it comes to selling supplements, it can be very effective. There are loads of great places that you can put them where you’ll hit your target audience. Sports equipment stores and gyms are the best places to put them, and you should see a spike in web traffic soon after distributing them.

Once you’ve established yourself and you have a healthy customer base, you can start using your brochures to keep them coming back. As soon as they get comfortable dealing with a certain company, they won’t be likely to go elsewhere. You can establish that loyalty by sending out brochures with special offers and deals for long term customers.

Make Sure That You Sell In Bulk

Selling smaller quantities is not bad, but most of the people that are serious about their workout regime tend to get through a lot of this stuff. Selling bigger quantities at a slightly reduced rate will help increase sales. If the customers are happy then you’ll be more likely to establish brand loyalty and keep them coming back. This won’t happen if they can’t get the larger amounts from you that your competitors are offering.

Time For A Makeover: How You Can Transform Your Summer Look

0

Summer is here, and for many of us, this is a perfect time for a makeover. Not only can you change up your personal style, but you can experiment with new makeup ideas and hairstyles which can transform your image.

The warmer weather is also the perfect opportunity to get out in the sun, do more exercise, and work on improving your body. So, without further ado, here are some great ideas to help you make the most of the summer months before winter gets you scurrying indoors again.

Transform your wardrobesummer-look

(image: pexels)

Now is the time to clear out wardrobe to make your room for your summer outfits. Remember, your style is your own, so you don’t need to be a dedicated follower of fashion. You don’t even need to buy anything new, as you could mix and match the items you currently own into an entirely different outfit.

However, if you are stuck for an idea, take a look online and see what others are wearing. While bright colours are usually a must for summer clothes, you may want to take a hint from royalty, and check out Kate Middleton’s new summer outfit at Popsugar.com. Alternatively, take a walk down your local high street and (discreetly) check out what people are wearing in your town. Not only will you get an idea of what you should add to your wardrobe, but you will probably also learn the kind of outfits you should definitely avoid!

Don’t overlook your feet. Havaianas are a summer staple, so head over to http://www.theiconic.com.au/ to see what they have to offer. You will want to give your toes room to breath, and catch a little piece of the sun, so find the right footwear to complement the rest of your summer outfit. We also looked at the summer styles in shades here at Bellenews.com, so from your head to your toes you can build up a great new look.

Whatever outfit you choose this summer, be true to yourself and find something you will feel comfortable and confident in wearing. It doesn’t matter what your body size is; there will always be an outfit you can fit into. Don’t be envious of the models on the catwalk, or those you see in magazines. Be proud of who you are, and wear something that suits the style you are looking to create. Not only are you trying to convey a fabulous new image to others, but you should also enjoy your latest ensemble.

Begin your summer workout

(image: pixabay)

When it’s cold and wet outside, you have a reasonably good excuse to delay your workout plan. However, with the sun shining, you should make the most of the good weather and start to work on your body.

For starters, think about what you are trying to achieve. You may be trying to lose weight, or want to work on your cardio. There is a range of great ideas at Bodyandsoul.com.au that should give you plenty of ideas on where to start your workout. As you plan, make sure you pace yourself as you don’t want to burn yourself out before you have barely begun. Particularly if your body has been ‘resting’ for the last few months, you are going to need to be gentle on your arms and legs to avoid an injury and cramping.

For many people, exercise is a chore, but you don’t have to limit yourself to anything you will endure. Summer is a time to have fun, and there are many ways to keep fit while having a good time. You might also enlist your family and friends in the activities you take part in, ensuring you all have the opportunity to stay fit over the summer. Therefore, think outside of the box a little. Check out the ideas on Fitfulfocus.com, and you are sure to find something you will enjoy doing.

Whatever you do, try and spend some time each day in a keep fit activity. Use a fitness tracker to help you monitor how many pounds and calories you are losing, and set yourself targets. Of course, you will be battling against the rays of the sun, so look after yourself. Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated, and layer yourself in sunscreen to protect your skin. Remember to eat healthily too, so cut back on those summer barbecues, and focus on delicious fruit smoothies to ensure your body looks good in the outfits you have chosen to wear.

Aegean Earthquake: At Least Two Killed on Island of Kos

At least two people died after a strong earthquake in the Aegean Sea hit the Greek island of Kos, officials say.

The 6.7-magnitude quake hit 7 miles north-east of Kos, near the Turkish coast, with a depth of 6 miles, the US Geological Survey said.

At least 100 others were also injured at the popular tourist destination. Some buildings were damaged.

In the Turkish city of Bodrum, dozens of people were injured as they tried to flee the quake.

The earthquake struck at 01:31 local time on July 21.

Lesbos 6.3 Earthquake Felt in Athens and Istanbul

The two deceased have not been named but police said that both victims were tourists – a 22-year-old from Sweden and a 39-year-old from Turkey.

They died after they were crushed by debris from either a collapsed wall or an old building, police said.

Dozens more were injured when buildings collapsed, some of them suffering broken bones with a number in serious condition, Kos regional government official Giorgos Halkidios said.

The Greek army is supporting the emergency services with the rescue operation, he added.

Kos was nearest to the epicenter of the quake and appeared to be the worst hit, with damage caused to a number of older buildings, including cracked walls and smashed windows.

The mayor said the buildings that suffered the most damage were built before “earthquake building codes” were introduced.

“The rest of the island has no problem. It’s only the main town that has a problem,” Mayor Giorgos Kyritsis said.

Three Earthquakes Hit Central Italy In One Hour

The roof of a bar on the island also collapsed, and a ferry was unable to dock due to damage at the harbor, Greek police said.

Tourists later gathered outside terminal buildings at Kos airport having left their hotels and apartments.

In Turkey, pictures shared on social media showed people in the city of Bodrum walking with water lapping their ankles and localized flooding, and about 80 people sought hospital treatment for minor injuries.

Others described waking in the night after being violently shaken in their beds.

Residents fled their homes and tourists ran from holiday apartments with pillows and blankets. Some sustained injuries after jumping from windows in panic, Turkish broadcaster NTV said.

At a hospital in Bodrum, the wounded were being treated in the garden as a precaution after the quake caused slight damage to parts of the hospital ceiling, the Hurriyet Daily News reports.

The earthquake also triggered high waves off Gumbet, a resort town near Bodrum, which flooded roads and left parked cars stranded, Turkish media report. There were no reports of casualties.

Turkey and Greece sit on significant fault lines and are regularly hit by earthquakes.

One of the deadliest in recent years hit the heavily populated northwest of Turkey, in 1999, killing some 17,000 people.

O.J. Simpson Granted Parole After Nine Years in Prison

0

O.J. Simpson has been granted parole after nine years in a Nevada prison.

The former football star is serving time for armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and 10 other charges over a 2007 confrontation at a Las Vegas hotel.

O.J. Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of the murders a year earlier of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

He was found guilty in 2008 of the botched Las Vegas robbery – exactly 13 years to the day after he was sensationally cleared in the so-called trial of the century.

O.J. Simpson and a group of five others stormed into a hotel room to confront two sports-memorabilia collectors and seize items that he claimed belonged to him from his career.

The hour-long hearing for Prisoner 1027820 took place at the Lovelock Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in the Nevada desert.

“Thank you!” said the 70-year-old, bowing his head as the board approved him for release in October.

O.J. Simpson Appears Before Parole Board in Nevada

O.J. Simpson told parole officials on July 20 the objects he took from the Las Vegas hotel room were later ruled by officials to legally belong to him.

“I’ve spent a conflict-free life,” he said.

However, in 1989 O.J. Simpson admitted spousal abuse after police responded to a domestic violence call at his home.

According to police records, his wife had run from the house screaming to officers: “He’s going to kill me!”

On July 20, Bruce Fromong, who was one of O.J. Simpson’s victims in the robbery a decade ago, testified in favor of his release.

“I’ve known OJ for a long time,” said Bruce Fromong.

“I don’t feel that he’s a threat to anyone.

“He’s a good man. It’s time to give him a second chance.”

O.J. Simpson appeared to dab a tear.

He told the commissioners he had helped establish a Baptist prayer meeting in prison, adding: “I could have been a better Christian.”

He also rejected suggestions he had an alcohol problem.

“I’ve done my time,” the former football star said.

“I’ve done it as well and as respectfully as anybody can. I think if you talk to the wardens they’ll tell you.

“I’ve not complained for nine years. All I’ve done is try to be helpful… and that’s the life I’ve tried to live because I want to get back to my kids and family.”

The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners said it had received hundreds of letters for and against O.J. Simpson’s parole.

In 2013, the board granted him parole on some of his convictions, but not for the more violent charges.

His daughter, Arnelle Simpson, choked up as she told the parole board: “My experience with him is that he’s like my best friend and my rock.”

She added: “He is remorseful, he truly is remorseful.”

However, O.J. Simpson’s legal problems are likely to continue after he is released.

An attorney for the family of Ron Goldman vowed to pursue him for due payment of damages.

Despite the 1995 not-guilty verdict, a civil court jury held O.J. Simpson liable for the deaths of his ex-wife and her friend, awarding $33.5 million to their families.

Two years ago a court enlarged that judgment to about $58 million, but it remains largely unpaid.

Legal experts say the families could claim a portion of O.J. Simpson’s future earnings, such as book deals or TV appearances.

However, under federal law O.J. Simpson’s estimated $20,000 monthly pension from the NFL is out of reach to creditors.

Following his playing career, O.J. Simpson appeared in TV commercials before taking roles in movies like the comedy The Naked Gun.

Salvador Dali’s Body Exhumed for Paternity Test

Salvador Dalí’s body has been exhumed to extract DNA to settle a paternity case.

Spanish forensic experts took samples from the surrealist painter’s teeth, bones and nails in a four-hour operation.

The exhumation followed a court order on behalf of María Pilar Abel Martínez, a woman who says her mother had an affair with the painter.

If María Pilar Abel Martínez is proved right, she could assume part of the Dalí’s estate, currently owned by the Spanish state.

It may take weeks before the results of the tests are known.

Salvador Dali’s Cartel des Don Juan Tenorio stolen from Venus Over Manhattan art gallery

Salvador Dalí, who died in 1989 at the age of 85, was buried in a crypt in a museum dedicated to his life and work in Figueres, in north-eastern Spain.

A crowd gathered outside the museum to watch as police escorted the experts into the building on July 20.

The exhumation went ahead despite the objections of the local authorities and the foundation carrying Salvador Dalí’s name, both of which claimed that not enough notice had been given ahead of the exhumation.

María Pilar Abel Martínez, a tarot card reader who was born in 1956, says her mother had an affair with Salvador Dalí during the year before her birth. Her mother, Antonia, had worked for a family that spent time in Cadaqués, near the painter’s home.

Last month a Madrid judge ordered the exhumation to settle the claim. It is contested by the Dalí foundation, which manages the estate of the painter, who was not believed to have had any children.

María Pilar Abel Martínez’s action is against the Spanish state, to which Salvador Dalí left his estate.

She says her mother and paternal grandmother both told her at an early age that Salvador Dalí was her real father.

However, the claim has surprised many, including Ian Gibson, an Irish-born biographer of Salvador Dalí, who said that the notion of the artist having an affair that produced a child was “absolutely impossible”.

“Dalí always boasted: <I’m impotent, you’ve got to be impotent to be a great painter>,” Ian Gibson said.

O.J. Simpson Appears Before Parole Board in Nevada

O.J. Simpson is appearing before a parole board to ask to be released after nine years in a Nevada prison.

The former football star, who was acquitted for a double murder in 1995, is serving time for armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and 11 other charges.

The sentence, which carries a maximum of 33 years, stems from a 2007 confrontation at a Las Vegas hotel.

O.J. Simpson, 70, had said he was only trying to reclaim his possessions.

He was found guilty in 2008 – exactly 13 years to the day after he was famously acquitted for the killings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

OJ Simpson’s Knife Found at His Former Estate NOT a Murder Weapon

O.J. Simpson and a group of five others stormed into a hotel room to confront two sports-memorabilia collectors to seize items that he claimed belonged to him from his own career.

The hearing for Prisoner 1027820 is happening at the Lovelock Correctional Facility, a medium security prison in the Nevada desert.

Parole panelist Connie Bisbee told him as July 20 hearing began: “Mr. Simpson, you are getting the same hearing that everyone else gets.”

“Sure,” he replied in a husky voice with a shrug and a smile.

“Thank you, ma’am.”

O.J. Simpson told parole officials that the objects he took from the Las Vegas hotel room were later ruled by officials to legally belong to him.

One panelist asked: “So you believe that the property was yours?”

“It’s been ruled legally by the state of California,” he responded, leaning forward and raising his voice.

O.J. Simpson said the belongings, which he described as images of his family and friends, was later handed over to him by officials.

“It’s kind of mind-boggling that they turned over to me property that I’m in jail for, for trying to retrieve.”

Knife Allegedly Found at OJ Simpson’s Former Home Tested by LAPD

If four out of seven members of the parole board vote in favor of his release, he could be free by October.

Experts believe O.J. Simpson is likely to be approved for release, after a record of good behavior at the Lovelock prison.

Another panelist asked the former football star if he had completed a specific self-improvement course since his last parole hearing.

O.J. Simpson said he had not, but that he had taken another course called “alternative to violence”.

“I think it’s the most important course anyone in this prison can take because it teaches you how to deal with conflict through conversation,” he said.

“I’ve spent a conflict-free life,” he continued, when asked if he had completed an anti-violence course.

O.J. Simpson also told the commissioners he had had helped establish a Baptist prayer event, adding: “I could have been a better Christian.”

He also rejected the suggestion that he had an alcohol problem.

In 2013, the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners granted O.J. Simpson parole on some of his convictions, but for not the more violent charges.

Bruce Fromong, who one of O.J. Simpson’s victims in the robbery, is expected to testify in favor of his release.

Things You Auto Know: Recovering From a Car Accident

0

car-driving

In 2015 alone, Americans drove an accumulative 3.15 trillion miles. That’s the equivalent of driving between Earth and Pluto over 600 times. Needless to say, we are driving more than ever. But with so many drivers on the road, there are unfortunately higher chances of more accidents. This can be due to various circumstances: problems with the roads, problems with drivers or unfavorable weather conditions are just a few potential issues for road users. So if you find yourself in a car accident or have recently experienced a car accident, bear this following information in mind.

Stop

Always stop at the scene. If you believe that you have hurt another person or pet, significantly damaged another vehicle, or damaged some sort of roadside feature (lamp post, sign, barrier, etc) then this is especially important. There are few things worse than a hit and run incident. So avoid escalating the situation to a crime.

Call Emergency Services

If another person is significantly hurt, it is essential that you ring the emergency services immediately. Calling an ambulance quickly could make all of the difference to their condition and their potential for a full recovery. If you have been in an accident where someone has left without leaving their details, or the road is blocked or damaged, you will have to ask for the police. They will be able to ensure that the scene is managed properly, redirecting traffic until the road is safe to use again and thus preventing further subsequent accidents from occurring at the location.

Exchange Details

You will need to exchange insurance details with any cars that you have had a bump or minor accident with. Ensure that you all have each other’s’ full names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, vehicle registration numbers, insurance details and policy numbers. This will be essential for any insurance claims in the follow up to the accident. The situation is tense, but attempt to remain calm and civil with one another. Also exchange any details with witnesses, so that you can contact them later for statements or reports.

Take Photos

Take photographic evidence of any damage caused by the incident. This can be damage to your car or physical damage to your bodies, such as bruising, cuts or scratches. These can also be used as evidence later if needs be. Ensure that they are high quality and as clear as possible.

Visit your GP

If you don’t have any major injuries that need to be seen by paramedics or emergency services, book an appointment with your GP who will be able to conduct a full check of your overall health and well-being. Many injuries that people sustain in car accidents are not immediately visible and only become apparent later down the line. Think of problems such as whiplash. These are best treated sooner rather than later, as this will minimize the detrimental effects of the incident. Traumatic situations can also have negative effects on individuals mental well-being, which you may want to seek counseling or treatment for.

Seek Compensation

Besides physical and mental damage, car accidents can cause serious problems with your lifestyle. The time taken to recover can leave you out of work and this is particularly detrimental to those who are self-employed and are not in receipt of sick pay. This is especially awful when the incident happened through no fault of your own. In this kind of situation, it may be a good idea to get into contact with a compassionate and caring car accident lawyer. These professionals will be able to guide you through the process of reclaiming lost funds. This will reduce the stress involved in trying to tide yourself over without a steady income and also allow you the necessary time that you need to make a full recovery. You may also want to seek compensation for hospital costs, as treatment and therapy don’t come cheap.

Take Your Time

You may want to rush back to work as soon as possible, leaving the incident in the past. Who can blame you? Car accidents are traumatic and not something that you want to spend your time focusing on. But it is important that you allow yourself the necessary time to recover fully. Otherwise, you may see other health problems crop up down the line or a worsening of your current symptoms. Stick to your hospital or therapy appointments to ensure that you are in receipt of the best treatment possible and are entirely recovered before easing yourself back into your usual routine.

5 Reasons Alternative Healthcare Is Booming

0

In an age where we have more access to healthcare and scientific literature than ever before, there is a curious desire from certain sections of society to buck the trend. Rather than immersing themselves in the relentless quest for further medical developments, people are turning instead to the old remedies that would once have been dismissed as old wives tales.

It’s an intriguing phenomenon, and one made all the more common thanks to the spread of information on the internet. So what’s powering this huge change in attitudes, and is it something we should be concerned about?

#1 – Alternative Remedies Can Be Beneficial

honey

PixaBay

First and foremost, it’s important to acknowledge this simple truth: alternative remedies can be beneficial. What’s more, most people know them to use them in conjunction with medical advice rather than as a replacement for it.

If you’ve got a skin lesion, then applying honey to it is genuinely beneficial. If you’re wanting to lose weight, then switching to a paleo diet could actually help you. If you want to assist chemotherapy treatment, then you might find baking soda for cancer treatment to be an additional benefit. Provided people stay in touch with qualified medical professionals throughout, there’s little inherent harm to experimenting with what might work.

After all, humanity got to this point in its existence using these old, often dismissed, remedies. Aspirin is the product of tree bark, after all – so dismissing natural, alternative solutions can be damaging. When people try these things and see results, then of course they’re going to be inclined to continue using them – that’s the very basis of empirical thought.

#2 – Healthcare Is Expensive

Even in countries with healthcare provided by the government, it’s still not cheap to keep the human body going. The cost of seeing a doctor is prohibitive in times when economic growth is so sluggish and wages are stagnating the world over. So what do you do when you don’t have the option of conventional medical care? You see what you can come up with on your own.

#3 – Antibiotic Resistance Is A Real Danger

For many proponents of alternative remedies, there is a genuine concern for the growing issue of antibiotic resistance. The problem is just going to continue to get worse unless humankind addresses its over-reliance on these wonder drugs.

For conditions like throat infections and easing the symptoms of the common cold, turning to antibiotics is the common way of coping for most people. If this tendency were to be replaced by a focus on alternative strategies to deal with minor health concerns, then there could be a genuine worldwide benefit to be reaped from this. While people should always see their doctor if symptoms persist, there’s no doubt that a reduction in the number of prescribed antibiotics is something the world could genuinely benefit from.

#4 – Distrust Of Doctors

doctor

PixaBay

It would be infantile to discuss this issue without talking of the high level of distrust that some sections of society have in the medical profession. The case of Charlie Gard in the UK is a perfect example of this. Gard – who is terminally ill with a rare mitochondrial illness – is being kept alive by life support. The hospital treating him, Great Ormond Street (one of the foremost children’s hospitals in the world) sought court action to withdraw his life support, which was granted and continued to be so at every appeal.

The fightback against withdrawing life support has been hugely based on a distrust of what the doctors of Great Ormond Street are saying. It permeates from all of the online discussion. Some people genuinely do seem to believe that doctors are constantly going against their oaths and seek to actively harm their patients.

Countering this distrust is a matter for the medical community and the media, but it shows no sign of abating at the present time.

#5 – Desperation

Finally, some undoubtedly turn to alternative therapies out of a sense of desperation as much as anything else. They may have been let down by conventional medicine, undiagnosed with conditions they actually have, and seek to take matters into their own hands. They might have been told there is no hope or nothing that standard medical practice could do for their plights, leading to a desire to seek help wherever they can. If alternative medicine offers them a solution and something to fight for, then it is hard for any bystander to tell them they shouldn’t do it. Ideally, things will never reach this point, but there is no doubt desperation laces many of the choices people make regarding their healthcare.

Should You Upgrade Your iPad Air 2 To iPad Pro 9.7 Or Pro 10.5

Though the iPad Air 2 was launched way back in 2014, it is still one of the hottest and most versatile tablets in the market. With 9.7 inches of screen and price tag that flickers in range of 440 EUR, Apple iPad Air 2 still manages to hold its own against latest entrants like Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 and iPad Pro series. Obviously, it blistered through the competition when it was released and claimed the top spot in the mid-sized tab segment. Yes, tabs reaching up to 10 inches are now mid-sized considering the array of 10 and 12 inchers released both by Apple and Samsung that mimic laptops and netbooks with their magnetic keyboard.

For most folks, the iPad Air series is the perfect balance of portability and functionality; one of the versatile gadgets that looks fashionable and delivers a punchy performance. The range of genuine leather iPad Air 2 cases can match your classic brown and black office wear.

But with a whole bunch of Pro series claiming to be new kingpins of tablets, should you upgrade your iPad Air 2? To answer that let’s look at what the Pro Series iPads have to offer that iPad Air 2 lacks.

iPad Air 2

Sharper Screen

That’s one area that will be most obvious when you see your friend’s iPad Pro 9.7 or 10.5 or even 12. The screen has got much, much sharper in two years, but ironically ppi density has remained the same, in case of iPad Pro 9.7. The difference-maker is Apple’s True Tone Display.

Faster Next-gen Processor and Increased Storage

Though Apple decided to go with 2 GB RAM for 9.7-inch variant of Pro and opted for a 2 GB bump (4 GB RAM) in iPad Pro 10.5, both the 9.7 and 10.5 variants got latest and greatest A9X and A10X Fusion chips respectively. Also, the minimum storage capacity for iPad Pro 9.7 is 32 GBs, while for 10.5 it is 64 GBs, unlike the measly 16 GBs found in iPad Air 2.

Improved Camera and Speakers

Apple improved the camera on Pro series massively. Not only they upped the mega pixels from 8 MP to 12 MP, on both iPad Pro 9.7 and 10.5, but also increased the size of pixels, thus improving color reproduction and low light performance. Not to mention, the newer cameras come with 4K video recording capabilities and simultaneous image capture.

Same story goes for the front facing cameras, which are improved from 1.2 MP to 5 MP for iPad Pro 9.7 and 7 MP for 10.5. Both new iterations come with capability of recording 1080p videos at 30 fps, that’s not too shabby for a tablet.

Additionally, for multimedia lovers, Apple ditched stereo speakers of iPad Air 2 in favor of four speaker system in both iPad Pro 9.7 and iPad Pro 10.5.

USB Connector

Apple went for the relatively new USB 3.0 reversible connector with newer Pro series to improve data transfer speeds. But as far as convenience goes, the old one wasn’t that bad, because it was also reversible.

That’s about it, on paper it looks like Apple improved multimedia capabilities of Pro series immensely, but when you compare them head to head, the difference is not that shocking.

US and China Trade Talks Fail

The US and China have failed to agree on trade after contentious talks in Washington.

The two sides did not issue a joint statement or action plan after the meeting and canceled scheduled press conferences.

The US was critical of China’s trade surplus and demanded “more fair” trade arrangements.

Separately, President Donald Trump indicated that tariffs on Chinese steel were still a possibility.

In his opening remarks to the annual US-China Comprehensive Economic Dialogue, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross criticized China’s $347 billion trade surplus with the US, saying it was not the product of market forces.

Donald Trump Says US Could Solve North Korea Nuclear Threat Without China’s Help

In a brief statement after the talks, Secretary Ross and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin offered few details and little indication of any progress on contentious issues.

The statement said: “China acknowledged our shared objective to reduce the trade deficit which both sides will work cooperatively to achieve.”

The contentious issue of steel tariffs was expected to be a difficult topic at the talks, but the two sides did not issue any statements on this.

The US blames China’s excess capacity for a global steel glut that is hurting US producers, and has threatened to impose tariffs.

US Steel stocks were sharply higher as investors interpreted silence on the issue as an increased likelihood of US action on Chinese steel.

Donald Trump Questions Whether US Should Continue One China Policy

According to Reuters, after the market closed, President Trump told a reporter that steel tariffs “could happen”.

Experts thought it was unlikely that the talks would produce any significant agreements on the most thorny issues.

In addition to steel, the US was expected to push China on its subsidies for state-owned enterprises.

China was expected to focus on US refusals to sell Beijing advanced technology products.

It was unclear whether the talks covered US demands for China to put more pressure on North Korea over its nuclear and missile program.

President Trump has previously signaled that China might obtain improved trade terms in exchange for help on North Korea.

In May, the US and China reached a trade deal that opens the Chinese market to US credit rating agencies and credit card companies.

China also agreed to lift its ban on US beef imports and accept US shipments of liquefied natural gas.

Think You’ll Never End Up In Court? Think Again

0

You might think that as a law abiding citizen that you will never end up in court arguing your legal case. But you might want to think again because there are lots of reasons why you could be in this situation. In some cases, it might be a situation where you haven’t even broken the law. In other cases, it could be a minor run in with the law that most likely won’t lead to prison time or even a fine. But you could still be asked to argue your case in front of a judge. So, what are some of the reasons why you might end up in court?

justice

Traffic Disputes

You may at some point in your life decide that you have been falsely accused of a traffic offense. Perhaps you feel that you were going the correct speed limit and despite this, you received a ticket. Or, maybe you believe that you were involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault. In either case, you will need to go to traffic court. Traffic court is a little more relaxed than your typical legal proceedings. But, you could still be asked to present evidence and argue your case. It is worth pointing out that if you do attend traffic court, you should make sure that you do have a case. Otherwise, you might find the punishment is more severe for wasting the court’s time.

Marriage Issues

Whether you want an annulment or you are seeking a divorce, you will need to use the services of the law. It’s true to say that most marital issues can be handled outside a lawsuit. But some can get very messy indeed. A court reporter is needed to keep evidence in check and present different pieces to the judge holding the proceeding. This usually occurs when there is a question of financial gain or perhaps child custody. In cases like this, it is important to make sure that each party gets what they deserve. It can be a long and arduous process, and divorce legal proceedings have been known to go on for months.

Petty Crime

Most of us do not have anything on our criminal records. However, it’s easier than you think to be dragged into court for a petty offense. You might have been on a night out and become a little too drunk to know exactly what you were doing. Perhaps you were shouting abuse at someone that you didn’t know. Or, maybe you annoyed a police officer. Either could earn you a night in lockup and a court proceeding at some point. These errors in judgment are one of the main reasons typical people end up in court arguing their case. At this point, it’s a smart move to get yourself a lawyer and make sure that you are represented.

You see, no matter how law abiding you are you could still end up in court at some point. That’s why it’s worth understanding the situation and how to handle it.

John McCain Diagnosed with Brain Cancer

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer and is reviewing treatment options, his office said.

According to the veteran Republican’s doctors, the options may include chemotherapy and radiation.

John McCain, 80, is in “good spirits” recovering at home.

The brain tumor was discovered during a surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye last week.

A Vietnam veteran, John McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war.

On July 14, the six-term senator and 2008 Republican presidential candidate underwent surgery at a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona.

Tissue analysis revealed that a primary brain tumor known as glioblastoma was associated with the clot, a statement from the Mayo Clinic said.

“The senator’s doctors say he is recovering from his surgery <amazingly well> and his underlying health is excellent,” the statement added.

“Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.”

Glioblastoma is a particularly aggressive brain tumor, and increases in frequency with age, affecting more men than women.

John McCain was in “good spirits as he continues to recover at home with his family”, his office said.

The senator’s family reacted with “shock” to the news, his 32-year-old daughter Meghan said.

She tweeted: “It won’t surprise you to learn that in all of this, the one of us who is most confident and calm is my father.

“So he is meeting this challenge as he has every other. Cancer may afflict him in many ways: but it will not make him surrender. Nothing ever has.”

President Trump said John McCain has “always been a fighter” and, in a statement, said: “Get well soon.”

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said John McCain was a “hero to our country”.

Former President Barack Obama said on Twitter: “John McCain is an American hero and one of the bravest fighters I’ve ever known. Cancer doesn’t know what it’s up against. Give it hell, John.”

Qatar Crisis: Gulf Bloc Drops List of Demands

The Gulf countries leading a boycott of Qatar are no longer insisting it comply with a list of 13 specific demands they tabled last month.

Diplomats from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt told reporters at the UN they now wanted Qatar to accept six broad principles.

These include commitments to combat terrorism and extremism and to end acts of provocation and incitement.

There was no immediate comment from Qatar, which denies aiding terrorist groups.

Qatar has refused to agree to any measures that threaten its sovereignty or violate international law, and denounced the “siege” imposed by its neighbors.

The restrictions put in place six weeks ago have forced Qatar to import food by sea and air to meet the basic needs of its population of 2.7 million.

At a briefing for a group of UN correspondents in New York on July 18, diplomats from the four Gulf countries said they wanted to resolve the crisis amicably.

Saudi permanent representative Abdullah al-Mouallimi said their foreign ministers had agreed the six principles at a meeting in Cairo on July 5 and that they “should be easy for the Qataris to accept”.

Qatar Crisis to Be Discussed in Cairo

Qatar Crisis: Saudi-Led Bloc Warns of Unspecified New Measures

According to the New York Times, they were combating terrorism and extremism, denying financing and safe havens to terrorist groups, stopping incitement to hatred and violence, and refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.

Abdullah al-Mouallimi stressed that there would be “no compromise” on the principles, but added that both sides would be able to discuss how to implement them.

The list of 13 demands handed to Qatar on June 22 included shutting down the Al Jazeera news network, closing a Turkish military base, cutting ties with the Muslim Brotherhood and downgrading relations with Iran.

Qatar Rejects List of Conditions for Lifting Sanctions

Abdullah al-Mouallimi said closing Al Jazeera might not be necessary but stopping incitement to violence and hate speech was essential.

“If the only way to achieve that is by closing down Al Jazeera, fine,” he was quoted by the AP as saying.

“If we can achieve that without closing down Al Jazeera, that’s also fine. The important thing is the objective and the principle involved.”

UAE permanent representative Lana Nusseibeh warned that if Qatar was “unwilling to accept core principles around what defines terrorism or extremism in our region, it will be very difficult” for it to remain in the Gulf Co-operation Council.

Qatar has acknowledged providing assistance to Islamist groups designated as terrorist organizations by some of its neighbors, notably the Muslim Brotherhood. However, it has denied aiding jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda or ISIS.

UAE Minister of State for International Co-operation Reem al-Hashimi said: “At this stage, the ball is in Qatar’s court.”

She added that the US had “a very constructive and very important role to play in hopefully creating a peaceful resolution to this current crisis”.

President Donald Trump was quick to claim credit for the pressure being placed on Qatar, saying it might mark the “beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism”.

However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson questioned the list of demands, acknowledging that some elements would “be very difficult for Qatar to meet”.

Also on July 18, NBC News cited US intelligence officials as disputing a report that alleged Qatar had paid a ransom of $1 billion to Iraqi Shia Muslim militias, Iranian security officials and Sunni Muslim jihadists in Syria as part of a deal to secure the release of royal family members kidnapped in Iraq.

The officials said Qatar had handed €300 million ($345 million) in cash to Iraq’s government but that Baghdad had confiscated the money after securing the hostages’ release.
