Munich Attack: Gunman Obsessed With Mass Shootings

0

The 18 year-old attacker who killed nine people in Munich on July 22 was obsessed with mass shootings and had an obvious link to Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, German police say.

Police who searched the gunman’s room say they found written material on attacks.

The young man, who later killed himself, had a 9mm Glock pistol and 300 bullets.

Police are investigating whether he may have lured his victims through a Facebook invitation to a restaurant.

The man is suspected of using a fake account under a girl’s name to invite people to the McDonald’s restaurant where he launched his attack.

Anders Breivik murdered 77 people in Norway on July 22, 2011, killing eight with a bomb in the capital Oslo before shooting dead 69 at a summer camp for young centre-left political activists on the island of Utoya.

Now 37, Anders Breivik is held in solitary confinement in Norway after being sentenced to 21 years in 2012. He recently won an appeal against the tough regime of his incarceration.

Breivik harbored radical right-wing views and said his attack was aimed at stopping Muslim immigration to Europe.

Yesterday’s attack at Munich’s Olympia shopping mall also left 27 people injured, including children.

Seven of the dead were teenagers. Three victims were from Kosovo, three from Turkey and one from Greece.

According to police, the gunman had been in psychiatric care, receiving treatment for depression.

“We are in deep mourning… we share your grief,” said German Chancellor Angela Merkel after chairing a meeting of the national security council.

Flags are to be flown at half-mast across Germany in mourning

Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae said there was an “obvious” link between the new attack and yesterday’s fifth anniversary of Anders Breivik’s attacks in Norway, when he murdered 77 people.

A spokesman for the Munich prosecutor, Thomas Steinkraus-Koch, said the killer might have been receiving psychiatric care.

“We are assuming that he may have suffered from depression,” he said.

“As far as we know he has no criminal record. In 2012 and 2010 he was a victim of an attack – on one occasion he was beaten by three young offenders.”

Hubertus Andrae warned the number of injured could increase if people who had fled the scene came forward. Ten people were critically ill, including a 13-year-old boy, he said.

First reports of the shooting came in just before 18:00 local time on July 22.

Witnesses say the attacker opened fire on members of the public in Hanauer Street before moving on to the shopping mall.

A grainy video appears to show a man firing a gun outside McDonald’s as people flee.

Another video shows the gunman walking around alone on a flat roof before again opening fire. He can be heard shouting at the person filming, saying at one point: “I’m German.”

Police said the gunman was a dual German-Iranian national who was born in Munich. His name has not been released.

The attacker’s body was found about half a mile from the mall. He had no known links to ISIS, police said.

Police have ruled out any connection to ISIS.

Fears of a new ISIS attack had been high just four days after a teenage Afghan asylum seeker stabbed and injured five people on a train in Bavaria before being shot dead by police.

Claiming the attack, ISIS later released a video showing the 17-year-old brandishing a knife and making threats.

Hillary Clinton Announces Tim Kaine as Her Running Mate

Hillary Clinton has announced Tim Kaine, a 58-year-old centrist senator from Virginia, as her running mate.

The Democratic presidential candidate broke the news in a tweet on July 22. She plans a formal announcement on July 23.

Hillary Clinton passed over more left-leaning candidates in favor of Tim Kaine, who is a strong supporter of free-trade agreements.

Tim Kaine’s home state of Virginia is a major battleground in the coming election.

He speaks fluent Spanish and could help the Clinton campaign maintain its support among Hispanic Americans – a growing voting bloc.

An experienced politician who has been toughly vetted, Tim Kaine is considered a “safe” choice for the vice-president slot. He personally opposes abortion but supports abortion rights.

Tim Kaine was a finalist to be Barack Obama’s running mate in 2008 and served as Virginia governor before his time in the Senate.

Hillary Clinton also reportedly interviewed liberal firebrand Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Senator Cory Booker, an African-American senator from New Jersey. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was said to have been on her shortlist.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump, in a text to his supporters, described President Barack Obama, Hilalry Clinton and Tim Kaine as “the ultimate insiders” and appealed to voters to not “let Obama have a third term”.

GOP chief Reince Priebus tweeted scornfully: “Hillary Clinton’s choice of Tim Kaine does nothing to unify a fractured Democrat base repelled by her dishonesty and cronyism.”

Bosnian Pokemon Go Players Warned About Landmines

Pokemon Go players in Bosnia are being warned to avoid straying into areas still sown with landmines from the war in the 1990s.

A Bosnian demining charity, Posavina bez mina, issued its warning after hearing reports of Pokemon Go users venturing into risky areas.

Pokemon Go players use their smartphones to hunt for cartoon monsters in the real world.

At least 600 people have been killed in landmine accidents in Bosnia since the end of the war in 1995.

According to a Bosnian demining group, an estimated 120,000 mines remain undiscovered.

As the popularity of Pokemon Go has soared, there have been numerous incidents and accidents involving gamers.

Posavina bez mina said on Facebook: “We received information that some users of the Pokemon Go app in Bosnia were going to places which are a risk for mines, in search of a pokemon.”

“Citizens are urged not to do so, to respect demarcation signs of dangerous mine fields and not to go into unknown areas,” it added.

Earlier this week, two teenagers in Florida were shot at by a householder who mistook them for burglars.

Pokemon Go, however, has had some unexpected positive effects: in one UK town police said players reported a theft while hunting for monsters.

Munich Attacks: Major Police Operation as Multiple People Shot Dead

At least six people have been shot dead during multiple attacks in Munich, Germany.

The shooting started at a shopping mall, police say.

According to police, at least three gunmen are involved in “suspected terror attack”

A big operation is under way. Police are telling people to stay at home and avoid the streets.

Several people have also been injured at the shopping center in the north-western Moosach district.

Reports speak of one or more attackers. Some shopworkers are reportedly unable to leave the building.

The police Facebook page quoted eyewitnesses as saying they had seen three attackers carrying guns.

Police are now describing it as “an acute terror situation”.

The security forces have been on alert after a teenage refugee stabbed and injured five people on a train in Bavaria on July 18.

The authorities had warned of the danger of further attacks.

Public transport has been suspended as the extensive security operation continues.

NTV reports that special forces are at the scene. Munich’s central station has been evacuated.

Munich police said they did not know where “the perpetrators” were.

“Look after yourselves and avoid public places.”

People stranded by the emergency and unable to get home are being offered shelter by locals. The initiative was launched with the Twitter hashtag #Offenetür (open door).

Prince George’s Third Birthday: Kate Middleton and Prince William Release Four Official Pictures

0

Kate Middleton and Prince William have marked Prince George’s third birthday by releasing four official pictures.

The photos show Prince George at the family’s Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, and were taken in mid-July by photographer Matt Porteous.

One of them shows him playing with the family dog Lupo.

Prince George Alexander Louis – aka His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge – was born on July 22 2013.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: “The Duke and Duchess hope that people will enjoy seeing these new photographs.

“They would like to thank everyone for all the lovely messages they have received as Prince George celebrates his third birthday.”

However, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has criticized the picture of the little prince holding an ice cream close to the mouth of the family dog.

A RSPCA spokesman said: “It is lovely that Prince George is trying to help keep his family dog, Lupo, cool in these high temperatures.

“We would advise people to be cautious when giving their dogs food meant for human consumption as some items, like chocolate, can be highly toxic to dogs and dairy items can be difficult for them to digest.

“Instead of ice cream we would suggest making an ice lolly from pet-friendly ingredients. Making these can be really fun for children and the end product is both safe and enjoyable for dogs.”

Pokemon Go Launched in Japan

Nintendo has finally launched Pokemon Go in Japan, the birthplace of the little virtual monsters.

Amid a flurry of social media excitement, Niantic Labs, the software company behind Pokemon Go, announced it was “finally broadcasting” in Japan.

First released in the US, Australia and New Zealand on July 6 and now available in more than 30 countries, Pokemon Go has been a global phenomenon.

The Japanese launch comes with a McDonald’s sponsorship deal.

McDonald’s restaurants were expected to be advertised as places where people were guaranteed to find Pokemon, or as “gyms” where players can train up their captured monsters for virtual fights.

However, a McDonald’s spokesman said restaurants would “call on players not to become a bother to customers who are eating”.

On July 22, excited Japanese fans began tweeting that they had been able to start playing.

After weeks of stories about people in other countries running into trouble playing Pokemon Go, Japanese authorities have taken precautions and issued a nine-point safety guide, in cartoon form.

The warnings, by the National Centre of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity, included asking users to register with “cool names that are different from real names” and cautioning them against heatstroke as they walk around in the sun.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on July 21: “I want people to abide by the warning so that people can play it on smartphones safely.”

Just a few hours after the launch, there were already reports of an accident.

A student at Osaka’s Kindai University reportedly fell down the stairs while playing Pokemon Go and was taking to hospital, said users on social media.

Pokemon Go is an augmented reality game on smartphones which has millions of people worldwide obsessively capturing small creatures in public spaces.

The game works by showing you a picture of your real surroundings as caught by the phone’s camera, then uses GPS to place virtual little monsters within that picture on your screen.

The mix of virtual and real worlds allows players to, for instance, fight a dragon circling Big Ben or chase a spaceship moving down their street.

Pokemons were first popular in the 1990s when they started on the Nintendo Game Boy. Back then, trading cards were a huge hit in school playgrounds and the new game manages to build on that legacy.

Donald Trump Accepts Republican Nomination at GOP Convention

Donald Trump has officially accepted the Republican presidential nomination at the GOP National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

In his speech at the Quicken Loans Arena on July 21, Donald Trump vowed to tackle multiple threats facing the US.

“The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end,” the New York billionaire told the Republican convention.

Donald Trump promised his presidency would usher in a new era putting America and ordinary people first.

His nomination has been clouded by the refusal of major party figures like Senator Ted Cruz to endorse him.

Ted Cruz, who was Donald Trump’s bitter rival during the primary contests, was booed off the stage by Trump supporters.

Other Trump opponents such as members of the Bush family stayed away from the convention altogether.

Donald Trump, who was written off when he launched his campaign a year ago, said he hoped his speech would ease tensions and unite the Republican Party.

Speaking for well over an hour, Donald Trump said the security of the country was under threat from Islamist radicals, undocumented immigrants and trade deals that failed American workers.

“We will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace,” he said.

“We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order.”

Addressing the “forgotten Americans” who worked hard but no longer had a voice, Donald Trump said: “I am your voice.”

The Republican nominee attacked his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, at every opportunity, blaming the former secretary of state for “death, destruction and weakness”.

In his speech, Donald Trump presented his plan to “put America first”:

  • Promising to build a “great border wall” to stop illegal immigration, gangs and drugs
  • Accusing Hillary Clinton of proposing mass amnesty, mass immigration and mass lawlessness
  • Saying that decades of immigration have produced lower wages for African Americans and Latinos
  • Accusing President Barack Obama of failing US inner cities on education, jobs and crime
  • Saying that nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records were “roaming free” to threaten citizens
  • Promising to end trade deals that had “destroyed [America’s] middle class”
  • Promising that “Americanism, not globalism” would be the tenet of foreign policy

Donald Trump was introduced in glowing terms by his daughter Ivanka, who said her father valued women workers and that he would make quality childcare affordable.

Not long into his speech, the audience began calling for the jailing of Hillary Clinton, chanting “Lock her up!”.

Donald Trump promised to defeat Hillary Clinton in November.

In a departure from Republican orthodoxy, Donald Trump took up the theme of acceptance of gay rights, framing it in terms of American values.

“I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence… of the hateful foreign ideology,” he said to some cheers from the crowd.

“As a Republican it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said,” Donald Trump added.

In a key moment earlier in the night, Silicon Valley mogul Peter Thiel told the convention he was proud to be gay.

The chairman of the Hillary for America campaign, John Podesta, attacked Donald Trump’s speech as divisive.

“Tonight, Donald Trump painted a dark picture of an America in decline,” he said.

“And his answer – more fear, more division, more anger, more hate – was yet another reminder that he is temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be president.”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz caused a storm on July 20 when he pointedly refused to back the nominee, sparking outrage and boos.

He later defended his decision, saying he would not be a “servile puppy” to someone who had attacked his family.

Donald Trump has previously criticized the appearance of Ted Cruz’s wife, Heidi.

Donald Trump’s nomination has been a source of conflict within the party, with some like Ted Cruz questioning his conservative principles.

Others like former nominee Mitt Romney are concerned about Donald Trump’s strident tone and extreme stance on immigration.

Are Your Kids Really Safe At School?

0

school

Credit Image

You would think that school is one of the safest places your kids could be, right? However, worrying news reports and recent research may show that simply isn’t the case. Your child’s school could be far more dangerous than you realize due to violence, peer pressure, cleanliness, and hygiene. Let’s look at some of these issues and think about how they could be a danger to your child’s health.

Bullying

Bullying is a lot more dangerous than people realize and lately, it’s become a far stronger presence in schools. This is mainly due to technology and new ways that children are able to bully under the radar. Social media is one of the common ways children now bully others. They can set up profiles online for that individual, post pictures or send hateful messages. This could be happening in school environment without you ever realizing there’s an issue. Teach may not even realize it’s going on and could argue it’s out of their jurisdiction. Particularly, if the messages are being sent out of school hours. Unfortunately, bullying can have severe and often fatal consequences. Cases of bullying have been linked to numerous child suicides over the years and increase the chance of self-harm.

Dangerous Individuals

Teachers working in a school should have been put through extensive checking procedures. Unfortunately, it seems that more often than not, dangerous individuals do slip through the cracks. There have been cases of teachers with a history of sexual offenses as well as staff with mental illness. It is clear that there needs to be more checks on anyone working with children. Background checks must be thorough, and they should go back years. Otherwise, how can we guarantee that our kids are safe in school? The answer is that quite simply, we can’t.

Cleanliness

You may not think of cleanliness in schools as a major issue. But think how many sick days could be prevented if schools were held to a higher standard of hygiene. Thousands of pupils are off school every year. This is due to illnesses that could have been prevented with better measures for cleanliness. The issue is that schools are facing tighter budgets. Many are trying to cut back in an area that doesn’t seem important, and that’s cleanliness. There should be a school cleaning checklist so that owners can make sure all the areas are completely covered. This will certainly reduce to the number of viruses and bugs kids contract in school.

Violence

Finally, from the knifing of a teacher in England to the shootings in America, it’s clear schools aren’t as safe as they used to be. It seems every year; there is another tragedy involving a school pupil involved in an attack. We need to be doing more to protect the children inside the school walls. This does not mean that staff should now be armed. However, it is a time we had metal detectors in every school across the country. We need to make sure that an armed civilian can never again enter a school and attack the children.

Rio 2016: Russia Banned from Track and Field Events Following Doping Scandal

0

Russia will remain banned from track and field events at this year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics following claims the country ran a state-sponsored doping program.

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and 68 Russian athletes attempted to overturn the suspension, implemented by the IAAF.

However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled the suspension can stand.

A handful of Russian athletes could still compete as neutrals at the Rio Games, which start on August 5.

“It’s sad but rules are rules,” said Olympic 100m and 200m champion Usain Bolt, who will be chasing more gold medals in Rio.

Usain Bolt said it was important to send a strong message to the dopers.

Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva – one of the 68 to appeal to CAS – said the ruling was “a blatant political order”.

The 2012 gold medalist, 34, told the Tass news agency: “Thank you all for this funeral for athletics.”

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said it was “pleased CAS has supported its position”, adding that the judgement had “created a level playing field for athletes”.Russia banned from Rio Olympics 2016

IAAF president Lord Coe added: “This is not a day for triumphant statements. I didn’t come into this sport to stop athletes from competing.

“Beyond Rio, the IAAF taskforce will continue to work with Russia to establish a clean safe environment for its athletes so that its federation and team can return to international recognition and competition.”

Separately, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is considering calls to ban all Russian competitors across all sports from the Rio Games following a second report into state-sponsored doping.

Some Russian athletes could compete in Rio as neutrals if they meet a number of criteria, including being repeatedly tested outside their homeland.

At least two – 800m runner and doping whistleblower Yuliya Stepanova and US-based long jumper Darya Klishina – have gone down that path.

Now the CAS ruling has cleared the way for more to follow.

CAS said the ROC could still nominate athletes to compete as neutrals. However, there appears to be little time for athletes to comply with the criteria.

Russia was suspended from track and field events by the IAAF in November 2015 following the publication of an independent World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report that showed a culture of widespread, state-sponsored doping.

Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko apologized for Russia’s failure to catch the cheats but stopped short of admitting the scandal had been state-sponsored.

However, another WADA-commissioned report delivered earlier this week – the McLaren report – contained more damaging allegations and suggested senior figures in Russia’s sports ministry were complicit in an organized cover-up.

The report implicated the majority of Olympic sports in the cover-up and claimed that Russian secret service agents were involved in swapping positive urine samples for clean ones.

Following July 18 publication of the McLaren report, the IOC faced calls to ban all Russian competitors from the 2016 Olympics and will hold an second emergency meeting on July 24 to decide its course of action.

The Russian authorities have already suggested that they will look at ways to continue legal action.

Following the ruling, sports minister Vitaly Mutko said CAS had set “a certain precedent” by punishing a collective group for doping offences by individuals.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “The principle of collective responsibility cannot be acceptable. The news is not very good.”

Turkey Coup Attempt: Recep Tayyip Erdogan Declares State of Emergency for Three Months

0

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a state of emergency for three months following the failed army coup in Turkey.

The state of emergency allows the president and cabinet to bypass parliament when drafting new laws and to restrict or suspend rights and freedoms.

Speaking at the presidential palace in Ankara, President Erdogan vowed that “all the viruses within the armed forces will be cleansed”.

Thousands of people have been arrested or sacked since the failed coup.

More than 600 schools have also been closed and thousands of state workers sacked in a crackdown by the president.

Photo Reuters
Photo Reuters

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after announcing the state of emergency: “This measure is in no way against democracy, the law and freedoms.”

The government will be allowed to rule by decree, with the powers of regional governors increased.

A re-organization of the police, intelligence services and the command structure of the armed forces is also expected.

Critics of President Erdogan have accused him of consolidating power on a scale largely unprecedented since Turkey’s first democratic elections in 1946 and of using the emergency to acquire more power for the presidency.

They say the president normally would need to alter the constitution to create an executive presidency and win back some of the powers he relinquished when his tenure as prime minister ended in 2014.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan praised those who were killed fighting against the coup as “martyrs”. Some 246 people were killed resisting the attempted coup, according to the government.

He was speaking after holding meetings of Turkey’s national security council and the cabinet in the capital.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier responded to Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s speech by urging the Turkish government to maintain both the rule of law and a sense of proportionality in its response to the coup attempt.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed the coup attempt on US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, a former ally whose followers run a worldwide network of schools.

He has called for Fethullah Gulen to be extradited to Turkey, but Secretary of State John Kerry said on July 20 that Turkey must provide hard evidence the cleric was behind the coup attempt for any extradition to take place.

Earlier, Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned of further arrests and suspensions to come as Turkish authorities continued to pursue those they believed responsible for the thwarted putsch.

Ted Cruz Fails to Endorse Donald Trump at Republican Convention

Ted Cruz was booed after failing to endorse Donald Trump as the Republican nominee, during a speech at the GOP convention in Cleveland.

The Texas Senator only went as far as congratulating Donald Trump who had been his bitter rival in the primary contests.

Angry chants of “We want Trump!” and “Endorse Trump!” grew louder as Ted Cruz came to the end of his speech.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence then took centre stage to give his vice-presidential acceptance speech.

Mike Pence praised Donald Trump’s record as a businessman and said the country had “but one choice” in November.

“It’s change versus the status quo, and when Donald Trump is president, the change will be huge,” he said.

Photo AP
Photo AP

Ted Cruz is likely to steal the headlines after stoking the rage of the convention, to such an extent that his wife Heidi had to be escorted from the floor.

In his speech, Ted Cruz told supporters to “vote [with] their conscience” and not to stay at home for the general election.

Ted Cruz finished second to Donald Trump in the delegate count during a campaign that featured personal attacks by the New York tycoon on Cruz’s wife and father.

The boos that drowned him out stopped when Donald Trump entered the convention hall before Ted Cruz had finished speaking.

Donald Trump later said he knew Ted Cruz would not endorse him but had let him speak anyway.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said his actions were “awful” and New York Congressman Peter King called the speech “disgraceful”.

The drama came at the end of the day when the Republicans tried to finally put the plagiarism scandal behind them.

Melania Trump faced accusations of copying after it was discovered that lines in her remarks matched almost word for word a convention speech delivered by Michelle Obama in 2008.

After initial denials from the campaign, Meredith McIver, a Trump Organization employee, admitted her role in writing the speech and apologized for the “chaos I have caused”.

Thursday night is the main event of the four-day event – Donald Trump’s acceptance speech.

3 Profitable Business Areas You Should Get Started In

0

Thousands of businesses are started every single year, to varying degrees of success. With worldwide economies slowing, or slumping – especially after Brexit – we need these businesses. We need them to create new jobs, opportunities and financial systems.

idea, bulb, thinking

https://www.pexels.com/photo/idea-bulb-paper-sketch-8704/

So, it’s important to keep that creative spark alive. We need new companies and entrepreneurs to provide that economic jump start that we can’t provide by ourselves. So, here are five businesses areas that would prove to be a popular investment for you – if executed well.

Handyman

Training to be a plumber, electrician or other form of skilled worker will take time, but can turn very profitable. Everyday people will always need these skills, and that means you’ll have a steady supply of work from which to fuel our company?

But how do you get started? Firstly, you need to learn the relevant skills. Night school, college or even videos, like the ones found at https://www.youtube.com, could help. Next, you must set up as a sole trader with the government, and get a license to perform this kind of work. Now it’s just a case of building up a reputation.

It’s not unreasonable for handymen to earn a high 5-figure salary, and even more if you build a team. You could bring on an apprentice, or even rent out an office space.

Tourism

Even though you may think your local area is pretty dull, to visiting guests, it’s a whole new experience. And fortunately, it’s an experience you could charge for!

Plenty of people run hotels out of their homes – that’s a good place to start. Next, look into your best local attractions. If you have a historical site, enquire about permits and see if you can lead tours. If you have a lake, invest in a boat or car carrier, like the ones offered by http://www.nautisnp.com. Suddenly, you can run water tours!

People love to pay for this stuff, and even better – you can charge a lot for it. A simple lake tour won’t cost you much at all, but the returns can be staggering. Again, just ensure you have permission to operate on that stretch of land, and there’s no reason to not get started.

Blogger

In 2016, literally anyone can start a blog. In fact, you could start a free WordPress blog today and turn it profitable within a year. Of course, it’s not quite that easy, but the possibility is still there.

It’s a simple case of picking your branding, first of all. There are millions of sites out there already, so look to make a big, bold statement. Next, you need to choose a CMS – WordPress is free, but limited. Squarespace is another great option. Run some free trials and see which you prefer.

Next, ensure your content is engaging and SEO-compliant. You can use a tool like Yoast SEO for this, or run down Google’s algorithms.

Now, begin to grow your audience by using social media, link building and guest blogging. It’s not unreasonable to gain hundreds of thousands of hits a month within a couple of years.

So, in summary, we need people like you. People who’ll read this post, become inspired and start something great. The news about our economy is never good, it seems. But you could be the one to change that.

Donald Trump Secures Republican Nomination at GOP Convention

Republican Donald Trump has secured his nomination for US president on day two of GOP’s National Convention.

House Speaker Paul Ryan urged delegates to unite behind Donald Trump, a day after splits in the party were evident as the convention opened.

The Trump campaign also faces accusations a speech by Melania Trump on July 18 was plagiarized from First Lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic Convention speech.

On the second day of the Republican National Convention, speakers focused almost exclusively on attacking Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a former prosecutor, held a mock trial for Hillary Clinton as the crowd chanted “lock her up”.Donald Trump hails Brexit referendum result

Chris Christie and others criticized Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email account while she was serving as secretary of state.

An FBI investigation said Hillary Clinton was “extremely careless” but found her actions didn’t warrant criminal prosecution. However, Gov. Chris Christie and the crowd disagreed as he repeatedly yelled “guilty”.

Chris Christie said Hillary Clinton has “selfish, awful judgment” and was to blame for various foreign policy problems in Libya, Syria and elsewhere.

Donald Trump is expected to accept the nomination on July 21.

His children played a prominent role on July 19, standing with the New York delegation as he was declared winner and delivering remarks.

Donald Trump youngest daughter, Tiffany Trump, whose mother is former model and dancer Marla Maples, told some personal stories about her father.

Tiffany Trump recalled scribbling notes in her school report cards and how excited she becomes when introducing her father to her friends.

Donald Trump is a “natural-born encourager” who has motivated her to work hard, his daughter said.

His son, Donald Trump Jr., described him as his best friend and role model.

“When people tell him it can’t be done, that guarantees it will get done,” he said of his father.

Donald Trump Jr. said Hillary Clinton was a risk the US could not afford to take and that “if she were elected, she would be the first president who can’t pass a background check”.

Donald Trump addressed the audience via a live-stream and said the nomination was an honor.

“This is a movement, but we have to go all the way,” he said.

“This is going to be a leadership that puts American people first.”

Parts of Donald Trump Jr.’s speech used segments of an article that had already appeared in the journal The American Conservative.

However, the article’s author, FH Buckley, said it was not plagiarism, as Buckley himself acted as one of the family’s speechwriters.

Turkey Coup Attempt: More Than 50,000 People Purged by Government

Over 50,000 people have been detained, fired or suspended from their jobs by Turkey’s government in the wake of last week’s failed coup.

The purge of those deemed disloyal to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan widened on July 19 to include teachers, university deans and the media.

According to the government, they are allied to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who denies claims he directed the uprising.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Fethullah Gulen led a “terrorist organization”.

“We will dig them up by their roots,” the prime minister told parliament.

Turkey is pressing the US to extradite Fethullah Gulen and the issue was raised during a phone call between President Barack Obama and President Erdogan on July 19, the White House said.Turkey purge coup attempt

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said a decision on whether or not to extradite would be made under a treaty between the two countries.

A Turkish government spokesman suggested that the US should be able to extradite Fethullah Gulen “on grounds of suspicion” rather than requiring facts of the case against him.

“There is very strong suspicion for his [Fethullah Gulen’s] involvement in this coup attempt. So this is sufficient grounds,” said spokesman Ibrahim Kalin.

For his part, the preacher says claims he was behind the coup attempt are “ridiculous”.

“I urge the US government to reject any effort to abuse the extradition process to carry out political vendettas,” Fethullah Gulen said in a statement.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due to chair meetings of his national security council and cabinet in the capital, Ankara, on July 20, after returning to the city for the first time since the attempted coup.

The meeting will be Erdogan’s first chance since the coup attempt to sit and talk in person with all key members of the government and armed forces.

His task is to re-impose stability amid the turmoil and to reassure the country and Turkey’s allies abroad that he is not embarking on a witch-hunt against his many critics.

The Pentagon said that talks also took place on July 19 between Defense Secretary Ash Carter and his Turkish counterpart, regarding the Incirlik air base in southern Turkey.

The base is used by the US-led coalition fighting ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Meanwhile, the Turkish government crackdown widened on July 19 to include the education sector and government departments.

According to Turkish media,15,200 teachers and other education staff had been sacked; 1,577 university deans were ordered to resign; 8,777 interior ministry workers were dismissed; 1,500 staff in the finance ministry had been fired; 257 people working in the prime minister’s office were sacked.

Turkish media regulation body also revoked the licenses of 24 radio and TV channels accused of links to Fethullah Gulen.

The news came on top of the arrests of more than 6,000 military personal and the sackings of nearly 9,000 police officers. About 3,000 judges have also been suspended.

The removal of thousands of officials has alarmed international observers, with the UN urging Turkey to uphold the rule of law and defend human rights.

A senior German official said on July 19 that “a deep split” had opened in Turkey, and he feared the divisions would cause unrest among Germany’s large Turkish community.

“The danger of an escalation in violence between Erdogan supporters and opponents has also risen in Germany,” Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper.

President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz has accused Turkey of carrying out “revenge” against its opponents and critics.

He also said a debate around restoring the death penalty was “deeply worrying”. The EU has warned such a move would end talks over Turkey joining the bloc.

According to official figures, last week’s coup attempt left 232 people dead and 1,541 wounded.

Baby Wipe Ingredients to Know (And Steer Clear Of)

0

Making sure your baby is healthy and happy is one of the most challenging learning experiences that all parents must go through. Learning which products work for you and your family is a complicated process that will take some trial and error; some chemicals in your everyday products might not be as safe for your baby as you’d like to think. Even though they are approved for use on human children, you still might not want to risk activating or agitating any potential allergies.

Which is exactly why we’re going to take a deeper look at some of the more harmful ingredients inside baby wipes, so you can be sure to avoid them.Baby wipes allergies

Formaldehyde

It’s pretty widely accepted that you can’t just put formaldehyde into stuff that people use on or in their bodies. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) gave it the highest (i.e. worst) score for negative health impact. It is a leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis, which is a type of eczema that develops usually within a few hours of contact with the allergen (the substance that the person is allergic to).

However, none of this has stopped the use of formaldehyde-releasing preservatives – so keep an eye out for these ingredients:

  • Diazolidinyl Urea
  • DMDM Hydantoin
  • Imidazolidinyl urea
  • Quaternium-15
  • Tosylamide/Formaldehyde Resin
  • Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate
  • 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bronopol)
  • Polyoxymethylene Urea
  • 5-Bromo-5-Nitro-1,3 Dioxane
  • Methenamine
  • Glyoxal
  • Benzylhemiformal

They may be hard to pronounce, but keeping an eye out for these ingredients will save you a lot of potential trouble later on down the road. Pro-tip: Baby wipes by companies like Honest do not have any formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing substances in their product. Options do exist, you just have to do your research.

Hydroquinone

Tocopheryl and Tocopheryl Acetate are compounds that are hugely beneficial for your skin, as they contain strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, they are often synthesized using hydroquinone, which is currently recognized as a carcinogen, and thus found to have evidence of carcinogenic properties. It is an allergen, skin toxicant and has been linked with other non-reproductive organs toxicity.

Phthalates

You will likely not see phthalates as a listed ingredient on any labels of baby wipes. However, you would likely find the words “fragrance” or “perfume” on labels, which is a mixture of hidden ingredients in baby wipes. According to the EWG, fragrance mixtures can often contain diethyl phthalate, which is associated with hormone disruption, allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and has potential effects on the reproductive system. The EWG has given it a rating of 8 on a scale of 10 – with 10 being the most harmful.

When looking for a great brand of baby wipes, it is good practice to look for varieties not containing a fragrance, as they tend to irritate sensitive skin, as well as steering clear of anything containing the suffix “-paraben” (a chemical preservative).

These aren’t the only hidden ingredients in baby wipes, but they are among the most harmful. If you do you due diligence and research, you can steer clear of these chemicals and have a happy, healthy baby with a happy, healthy bottom.

Did Melania Trump Plagiarize Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic Convention Speech?

Melania Trump is facing accusations of plagiarism after her speech on the first day of the Republican National Convention.

Commentators noticed similarities with First Lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic Convention speech.

Melania Trump’s speech also praised her husband as a “compassionate” man who would “fight for the country”.

It was her first speech of the campaign and she had the help of a speechwriting team.

In a section, Donald Trump’s wife said: “My parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect.”

Michelle Obama’s speech in 2008 carried the lines: “Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.”

Melania Trump speech continued: “[My parents] taught me to show the values and morals in my daily life. That is the lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow, because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Michelle Obama said: “And Barack Obama and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generations. Because we want our children, and all children in this nation, to know that the only limit to the height of your achievement is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”Melania Trump Michelle Obama plagiarism

Donald Trump’s communications adviser Jason Miller issued a statement saying: “In writing her beautiful speech, Melania’s team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking.

“Melania’s immigrant experience and love for America shone through in her speech, which made it such a success.”

Melania Trump, a Slovenian-born former model, had used the speech to portray her husband as a tough but compassionate unifying force.

“He’s tough when he has to be but he’s also kind and fair and caring,” she said.

“The kindness is not always noted, but it’s there for all to see. That is one reason I fell in love with him to begin with.”

Melania Trump has kept a lower profile compared with other spouses of major candidates. Her adult children have often filled the role.

Her mostly personal speech contrasted with the night’s other speakers who spoke about “making America safe again”.

She said: “If you want someone to fight for you and your country, I can assure you, he is the guy.”

A wide range of speakers, including a county sheriff, a decorated combat veteran and a former model, told stories of military service, urban crime and the dangers of illegal immigration.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton took aim at presumptive Democratic nominee State Hillary Clinton, questioning her judgement in foreign affairs.

“Who would trust Hillary Clinton to protect them?” said Rudy Giuliani, whose rousing speech fired up the crowd at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

“I wouldn’t.”

Many GOP leaders – such as Ohio Governor John Kasich whose state is hosting the convention – have decided not to attend this year’s festivities, turned off by Donald Trump’s controversial stances on immigration and foreign policy.

Donald Trump has called for a ban on Muslims entering the US and also advocated deporting almost 11 million undocumented immigrants.

A speech by Wisconsin police sheriff David Clarke strongly defended police officers in the wake of the deadly shooting in Baton Rouge, which killed three officers over the weekend.

“Blue lives matter!” David Clarke said to huge cheers from the delegates in the convention hall.

The killings prompted Donald Trump to say the country was falling apart – a claim strongly disputed by President Barack Obama.

Earlier, anti-Trump delegates failed in their final push to block Donald Trump’s nomination.

The vote that would have allowed delegates to back a candidate of their choice was quashed when three states reportedly backed out.

Some said the GOP officials had sabotaged their efforts on purpose.

The push was the last gasp for those who hope to see a different Republican candidate get the nomination.

College Won’t Cost You A Fortune Thanks To These Tips

0

The cost of higher education is on the rise. Anyone that doesn’t think it is on the rise just has to look at the protests from around the world. Whether it is London or New York, students don’t want to pay tuition fees that cripple them in the future. At the minute, that is the prospect you face if you don’t have the cash in your bank balance. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way if you follow these tips. The tips below will help you cut the cost of your college education.

Choose A College That Suits Your Needs

No one wants to hear this, but it is worth considering a lesser college if you don’t have the money. Everyone wants to go to Oxford or Harvard, yet it isn’t always possible. For starters, the admission tests are almost impossible. Even worse, you have to pay a lot for the privilege to study at their establishment. After all, they can find ten people to replace you that have the finance. Maybe it is time to look into colleges that don’t charge as much for admission. Then, you won’t need to borrow as much and be in as much debt.

Get A Scholarship

The alternative is not to pay a single penny. How do you do that, you ask? It is simple: you get a scholarship. A scholarship is the best way to go to college if you don’t have any money. In laymen’s terms, the college waives your tuition fees because of your academic performance. They want you to go to college so much that they are willing to waive the fee. Now, scholarships aren’t easy to find, and they are competitive. However, if you can show the board that you are a well-rounded person, you have a good chance.

Minimize The Length Of Time

One of the main reasons doctors have so much debt is because of the length of their studies. Unlike most students, they spend five to seven years at college. As a result, the extra four years bumps up their student loans. The average student pays a lot less because they don’t spend as much time in the establishment. With that in mind, try and reduce the length of time you spend in college. The quicker you graduate, the less debt you will accrue.

Track What You Owe

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you will have some debt by the time you graduate. It is just an occupational hazard of going to college. What most students do to make it worse is to forget all about their debt. As far as high costs go, that is a suicidal move. Any student needs to use resources like NSLDS to keep their finger on the pulse. If you don’t know how, here are some tips for using the NSLDS. There is no way that you can lower the cost of education if you don’t understand what you owe.

College is expensive. However, it doesn’t have to break the bank if you know a few tricks of the trade.

Turkey Coup Attempt: Nearly 8,000 Police Officers Purged

Up to 8,000 police officers have been suspended in Turkey, reportedly on suspicion of having links to the failed coup attempt at the weekend, officials say.

Some 6,000 members of the judiciary and military, including generals, have been detained in connection with the coup.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to purge state bodies of the “virus” that caused the revolt.

The government claims cleric Fethullah Gulen was behind the plot.

Fethullah Gulen lives in the US and strongly denies any involvement.

Turkish state media reported on July 18 that more than 100 generals and admirals had been detained in raids across the country.

Eight Turkish military officers who fled to Greece by helicopter are appearing in court in the Greek border city of Alexandropouli charged with entering the country illegally.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a crowd on July 17 that Turkey would consider reinstating the death penalty.

Capital punishment was abolished in 2004 as part of Turkey’s bid to join the EU. Nobody has been executed in the country since 1984.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, was speaking ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers and Secretary of State John Kerry in Brussels, at which the events in Turkey are likely to be high on the agenda.

Federica Mogherini said there would be no excuse for any steps that would take Turkey away from the rule of law and that the foreign ministers would be sending a “strong message” on that.

Morocco Wants to Rejoin African Union After 32 Years

Morocco has announced its intention to rejoin the African Union (AU), 32 years after leaving the organization.

In a message to the AU summit in Rwanda, King Mohammed VI of Morocco said the time had come for his country to retake its place within its institutional family.

Morocco left the AU in 1984, after the organization recognized the independence of Western Sahara.

Morocco describes Western Sahara as its “southern provinces”.Morocco African Union

For more than three decades, Morocco has refused to be part of the AU.

In March, Morocco threatened to pull its soldiers out of UN global peacekeeping missions because of the dispute.

Now, the Moroccan authorities seem to have concluded their absence hasn’t helped them diplomatically over Western Sahara and many other issues.

They sent a special envoy to lobby African leaders at their summit in the Rwandan capital Kigali this weekend.

The AU has said that it will continue pushing for the rights of the people of Western Sahara to hold a self-determination referendum.

Morocco is the only African country which is not an AU member.

Baton Rouge Shootings: African-American Gunman Kills Three Police Officers

0

Three police officers were shot dead in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by an African-American who had served for five years in the Marines.

The suspect, Gavin Long from Kansas City, Missouri, was also killed.

Gavin Long, 29, had posted videos on the internet complaining about police treatment of African-Americans.

Tensions in Baton Rouge have been high since another black man, Alton Sterling, was shot dead by police two weeks ago.

That death – and a second police shooting in Minnesota – sparked protests across the US and triggered a revenge attack by a black army veteran who shot dead five officers in Dallas.

In one video, posted on YouTube, Gavin Long said that should “anything happen” to him, he was “not affiliated” with any group.Gavin Long Baton Rouge shooter

“I’m affiliated with the spirit of justice, nothing more nothing less. I thought my own thoughts, I made my own decisions,” he said.

In a live broadcast from the White House, President Barack Obama called upon all Americans to unite and refrain from divisive language.

“Regardless of motive, the death of these three brave officers underscores the danger that police across the country confront every single day, and we as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence against law enforcement,” said the president.

“Everyone right now focus on words and actions that can unite this country rather than divide it further,” Barack Obama added, as the US begins two weeks of political conventions with Republicans meeting in Cleveland later on July 18.

“We need to temper our words and open our hearts… all of us,” said the president.

A vigil was attended by police officers and members of the public on Sunday evening at Saint John the Baptist Church in Zachary, just north of Baton Rouge.

The incident began on July 17 with shots being fired at a petrol station on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge.

Police received reports of a man with an assault rifle.

Shots were exchanged over a period of more than 15 minutes, leaving three police officers and the suspect dead, with three other officers wounded, one in a critical condition.

The dead officers were named as Montrell Jackson, 32, and Matthew Gerald, 41, of the Baton Rouge police department, and Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Garafola, 45. All three men had families.

Gavin Long, a former Marine, received an honorable discharge, and won several medals while in the military, including one for good conduct.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards told a news conference it was an “absolutely unspeakable, heinous attack.”

Although no other suspects have been identified, police said they were investigating whether the gunman had help from unknown others.

“We are not ready to say he acted alone,” said state police spokesman Major Doug Cain.

Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden said he had spoken to White House officials who had offered assistance. He said it was “a defining moment” for community relations.

Kip Holden also told local media the “rhetoric from some people” after the death of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge may be connected to the shootings, without elaborating who.

5 Simple Steps to Finding the Perfect Serviced Office in Auckland

0

Sometimes, it can feel like providing all of the things needed to run a business takes more effort than actually running it. In a leased office or lot, there are all kinds of responsibilities to think about. Everything from heating to lighting, computers, stationery, furniture, cleaning, and safety equipment needs to be provided on a constant basis. This inevitably takes focus away from business objectives and ties up essential resources.

However, with a serviced office, like the ones offered by Servcorp, all of these things are taken care of on your behalf. These premium workspaces can be rented – on a short or long term basis – with everything that your business could ever need included in the deal. Unlike traditional office leases, you are paying for a personal space that is ready to use from day one. Plus, you can choose from one of two prestigious Servcorp addresses, in Auckland.

Step One: Establish a Budget

For smaller companies, budget is bound to be a priority. Fortunately, most reputable providers offer a range of different price tiers and packages. And, the majority of serviced office arrangements come with ‘user pay’ features. So, you don’t necessarily have to pay for a fully equipped workspace, especially if the package includes things that you don’t need. It is best to speak with a provider directly if you want more information on office rates.

Step Two: Pick a Great Location

Servcorp owns and operates from three prominent addresses in Auckland and Wellington. Its serviced office solutions are available at the Vero Centre and the PwC Tower. These are both prestigious Auckland addresses and they add credibility and authority to any business that makes it homes there. However, before you decide on a location, think carefully about things like distance from key clients, ease of parking, leisure (respite) areas, and equipment quality.

 auckland

Step Three: Start Small and Grow

If you have never used serviced office solutions before and you’re not sure how much space you need, the best approach is to start small. The great thing about this kind of service is that there are no rigid contracts. Businesses can downgrade or upgrade, as and when they see fit, by adding features to their existing deal or package. You can even pay on a monthly basis, so that you’re not locked into any long term arrangements.

Step Four: Select the Best Features

While budget is always going to be a consideration, skimping on features and perks is not a good idea if you want to take full advantage of the communication, secretarial, IT, and administrative benefits of serviced solutions. Make sure that you have a dedicated phone line and mailing address, as an absolute minimum. Also, check the policy on calls if you are planning to liaise with clients overseas. Most offer free local calls, but charge for international communications.

Step Five: Read the Rules Carefully

It is really important that you understand the terms of your arrangement, before you hand over any money. One of the best things about serviced offices is that they don’t have to lock you into a long term contract, so ultimately, if you are unhappy with the deal, you won’t have to wait long to change it. However, it is still best to read the terms and conditions carefully and know exactly what you are getting.

Choose Servcorp for Premium Serviced Office Solutions

With serviced office solutions from Servcorp, businesses can benefit from all the flexibility of ‘nomadic’ a work schedule, while also enjoying the security of a physical work environment. There are obligatory long term contracts, no charges for services that you don’t use, and there is no need to go it alone. The secretarial, administrative, and tech support teams are always on hand to provide advice, information, and onsite training.

Herbalife Reaches $200 Million Deal with FTC over Pyramid Scheme Label

0

Herbalife has reached a deal with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to avoid being labeled a pyramid scheme.

The dietary supplement company agreed to pay $200 million to settle the accusations.

The FTC had been investigating whether Herbalife misled customers about the potential value of reselling its products.

The deal was a blow to activist investor Bill Ackman who was betting against the company.

Herbalife shares climbed over 18% at one point.

Bill Ackman made several public allegations that Herbalife was a “bad” company that relied on a hierarchical structure that focused on recruiting new salespeople rather than selling products.

Photo Twitter

The FTC investigation also focused on this structure. Herbalife uses a direct sales method where products are bought by distributors to sell to the public and who are also encouraged to bring in new recruits.

The FTC settlement requires Herbalife to reorganize its compensation system to reward retail sales more than recruitment.

The regulator said, only a small proportion of Herbalife distributors earned anything near the amount the company promised.

FTC chairwoman Edith Ramirez said in a statement: “Herbalife is going to have to start operating legitimately, making only truthful claims about how much money its members are likely to make.”

Herbalife marketing material advertised that part-time sellers of its nutritional products would earn between $500 to $1,500 a month. Many distributors, in fact, lost money.

On July 15, Herbalife also announced it was changing its internal governance to allow investor Carl Icahn to own a larger stake in the company.

Carl Icahn will now be able to own 35% of Herbalife shares.

In a statement, Carl Icahan praised Herbalife’s management for the way it handled the investigation. He also said the company should move on and look at possibly acquiring some competitors.

“Now that the company has reached a settlement with the FTC, it is time to consider a range of strategic opportunities, including potential roll-ups involving competitors, as well as other strategic transactions,” he said.

Carl Icahan’s support of Herbalife led to a dispute with Bill Ackman.

Bill Ackman has been “shorting” the company – a strategy where an investor borrows stock and sells it hoping to buy it back at a lower price before the date of return.

The two exchanged insults during an interview calling each other a “liar” and a “cry-baby”.

Turkey Coup Attempt: 2,839 Soldiers and Officers Arrested

0

Turkey’s PM Binali Yildirim has announced that some 2,839 soldiers, including high-ranking officers, have been arrested after an attempted coup that is now over.

At least 161 civilians have been killed and other 1,440 wounded during clashes.

Those held include two army generals, Turkish media say.

Explosions and firing were heard in key cities on Friday night, July 15, and thousands heeded a call by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to rise up against the coup-plotters.

It is unclear who was behind the coup.Turkey coup attempt 2016

The authorities also said 104 suspected coup-plotters had also been killed.

Some 2,745 Turkish judges have also been dismissed in the wake of the coup, state media say.

They are reported to include a member of Turkey’s top court.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed a “parallel structure” – a reference to Fethullah Gulen, a powerful but reclusive US-based Muslim cleric whom he accuses of fomenting unrest.

Fethullah Gulen has rejected any suggestion of links to what happened, saying he condemned “in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey”.

The Turkish government wants Fethullah Gulen’s extradition.

Events began on July 15 as tanks took up positions on two of the bridges over the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, blocking traffic. Troops were seen on the streets and low-flying military jets were filmed over Ankara.

Shortly after, an army faction issued a statement that a “peace council” was running the country, and it had launched the coup “to ensure and restore constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms”.

President Recep Tyyip Erdogan, then in the south-west resort of Marmaris, made a TV address via his mobile phone, urging people to take to the streets to oppose the uprising.

After flying to Istanbul, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “What is being perpetrated is a treason and a rebellion. They will pay a heavy price.”

During the violence, the Turkish parliament and presidential buildings in Ankara were attacked. Gunfire was also heard outside Istanbul police headquarters and tanks were said to be stationed outside Istanbul airport.

Broadcaster CNN Turk was temporarily taken off air after soldiers entered the building and tried to take it over. CNN Turk later tweeted a photo of soldiers being arrested by police.

There were reports of fierce clashes in Taksim Square in central Istanbul, and gunfire and explosions were heard near the square. One of the helicopters being flown by rebels was reportedly shot down by government troops in Ankara.
