Indonesia: Bali Volcano Eruption Disrupts Flights

A red air travel warning has been issued after Bali’s Mount Agung erupted for the second time in a week.

Volcanic ash is sent in the skies as the volcano emitted a thick plume of smoke reaching 13,100 feet.

It is the second major emission from the Indonesian island volcano this week, and flights have been disrupted.

The red warning means an eruption is forecast to be imminent, with significant emission of ash likely.

Authorities have begun distributing masks in areas amid ash fall.

Bali is a major tourist destination, although the main destinations of Kuta and Seminyak are about 43 miles from the volcano.

Its main airport is for now operating normally, but some airlines have canceled flights. Volcanic ash can damage plane engines.

Turrialba Volcano Ash Covers Central Costa Rica

On the island of Lombok just east of Bali, the main international airport has been closed entirely.

The information director of Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency tweeted that volcanic ash rain had fallen on the Lombok city of Mataram.

The agency said in a statement: “Tourism in Bali is still safe, except in the danger (zone) around Mount Agung.”

It told people within a 5 miles exclusion zone to “immediately evacuate” in an “orderly and calm manner”.

About 25,000 people are thought to still be in temporary shelters after more than 140,000 people fled earlier this year. Increased volcanic activity had prompted fears a major eruption was imminent.

Most of the population outside the immediate exclusion zone was ordered to return home at the end of September, and the mountain has been intermittently rumbling since.

According to official estimates, Bali lost at least $110 million in tourism and productivity during the major evacuation.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

It is home to more than 130 active volcanoes. The last time Mount Agung erupted, in 1963, more than 1,000 people died.

China Factory Explosion Kills at Least Two People in Ningbo

A major explosion in the eastern Chinese port city of Ningbo killed at least two people, local officials say.

The explosion is said to have occurred at a factory at about 09:00 local time in the city’s Jiangbei District, causing some nearby buildings to collapse.

Chinese media said the explosion happened in an industrial area, and residential buildings damaged nearby were already empty ahead of planned demolition.

Some local reports suggested gas canisters could have been to blame for the blast.

Shattered windows were reported in businesses up to 1mile away from the site of the explosion itself.

According to state media, at least 30 people had been taken to local hospitals amid rescue operations.

President Donald Trump Claims He Rejected Time Magazine’s Person of the Year Offer

Time Magazine is contradicting President Donald Trump’s account of how he rejected a request for an interview and photo shoot ahead of its Person of the Year issue.

On November 24, President Trump tweeted that Time had called to say he was “probably” going to be named Person of the Year.

However, Time later said the president was incorrect about how it makes its choice.

Donald Trump was awarded the title in 2016.

The president has previously falsely claimed that he holds the record for cover appearances on Time Magazine.

Mexico has created a huge marine park around a group of islands home to hundreds of species including rays, whales and sea turtles.

The Revillagigedo Archipelago is a group of volcanic islands off Mexico’s south-east coast.

With a protection zone of 57,000 square miles, it has become the largest ocean reserve in North America.

The move will mean all fishing activity will be banned, and the area will be patrolled by the navy.

The Mexican government is hoping the move will help populations hit by commercial fishing operations in the area recover.

The park was designated by a decree signed by President Enrique Pena Nieto. It will also forbid natural resources being extracted from the land or the building of new hotel infrastructure.

According to local media, María José Villanueva – the director of conservation of WWF in Mexico – described the move as an “important precedent” to the rest of the world.

Egypt Mosque Attack Kills At Least 235 in Bir al-Abed

At least 235 people have been killed after militants launched a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt’s North Sinai province, state media say.

The al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed was targeted during Friday prayers.

The attack is the deadliest of its kind since an Islamist insurgency in the peninsula was stepped up in 2013.

Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi vowed to respond with “brute force” after talks with security officials.

No group has yet claimed the attack, but militants affiliated with ISIS have been responsible for scores of deadly attacks in the province.

ISIS militants usually target security forces and Christian churches, and the bloody attack on a mosque associated with Sufi Muslims has shocked Egypt.

According to witnesses, dozens of gunmen arrived in off-road vehicles and bombed the packed mosque before opening fire on worshippers as they tried to flee.

The assailants are reported to have set parked vehicles on fire in the vicinity to block off access to the mosque.

Pictures from the scene show rows of bloodied victims inside the mosque. At least 100 people were wounded, reports say, overwhelming hospitals.

The head of ISIS’ religious police in Sinai said last December that Sufis who did not “repent” would be killed, after the group beheaded two elderly men reported to be Sufi clerics.

The victim of the mosque attack also included military conscripts.

Militant Islamists have been waging an insurgency on the Sinai Peninsula in recent years, stepping up attacks after Egypt’s military overthrew Islamist President Mohammed Morsi after mass anti-government protests in July 2013.

Hundreds of police, soldiers and civilians have been killed since then, mostly in attacks carried out by Sinai Province group, which is affiliated to ISIS.

Sinai Province is thought to want to take control of the Sinai Peninsula in order to turn it into an Islamist province run by ISIS.

Emmerson Mnangagwa Inaugurated as Zimbabwe’s President

Emmerson Mnangagwa has been inaugurated as Zimbabwe’s new president in a ceremony at a packed stadium in the capital, Harare.

The move follows the dramatic departure of long-term President Robert Mugabe after 37 years of authoritarian rule.

Emmerson Mnangagwa’s dismissal earlier this month led the ruling Zanu-PF party and the army to intervene and force Robert Mugabe to quit.

The former vice-president, who had fled the country, returned from exile on November 22.

The opposition is urging Emmerson Mnangagwa, who has been part of the ruling elite, to end the “culture of corruption”.

Although Emmerson Mnangagwa has unseated Robert Mugabe, he is still associated by many with some of the worst atrocities committed under the ruling Zanu-PF party since the country gained independence in 1980.

After being dismissed as part of a power struggle over who would succeed Robert Mugabe as president, Emmerson Mnangagwa fled to South Africa two weeks ago – only to return home on November 22 to a hero’s welcome.

Tens of thousands of people packed the National Sports Stadium at Harare to witness the inauguration. Pop singer Jah Prayzer provided the entertainment and, as people in the crowd danced, the atmosphere was closer to that of a concert.

Dignitaries, including leaders from various African countries filed in to cheers.

Opposition leaders Morgan Tsvangirai and Joice Mujuru – who have both also had their sights on the presidency at various times – were there.

Emmerson Mnangagwa was led in the oath of office by Chief Justice Luke Malaba, saying he would “be faithful to Zimbabwe”, “protect and promote the rights and people of Zimbabwe” and discharge his duties to the best of his abilities.

He was accompanied by his wife Auxilia and gave her a kiss after the green presidential sash was placed around his neck.

The crowds cheered a 21-gun salute and a flypast.

Former President Robert Mugabe did not attend the inauguration ceremony – and the official reason given was that at 93, he needed to rest.

On November 23, several reports suggested Robert Mugabe had been granted immunity from prosecution.

Local media are reporting that Emmerson Mnangagwa has offered the Mugabe family “maximum security and welfare”.

Robert Mugabe “expressed his good wishes and support for the incoming president,” the Herald newspaper reports.

Oscar Pistorius’ jail sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Stenkamp has been increased to 13 years and five months, a South African court has ruled on November 24.

According to prosecutors, the six-year term for murdering Reeva Steenkamp was “shockingly light”.

A spokesman for Reeva Steenkamp’s family said the ruling “verified there was justice”.

The Olympic athlete claimed he shot dead his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day in 2013 after mistaking her for a burglar.

The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein has now given Oscar Pistorius the minimum 15 years prescribed for murder in South Africa, less time already served.

Some things that beggar belief, yet he remains arguably the most important single individual in the Western World. How did this happen, what has become the norm, and what can we expect for the future from President Trump? Read on to find out.

How Trump was elected

Of course, why any single person gets elected as the leader of the free world is a complicated matter. However, there are two issues that stand out above all others.

The first is that voter turnout was incredibly low. 58 % to be precise, and as voter turnout reduces you can expect those with more extreme views to be the ones left making an effort to put their mark in the box. With the indifferent voters more likely to stay at home, something that perhaps had a role in Trump’s success?

Perhaps, also, if we had taken a leaf out of Estonia’s book and used something like the Smartmatic system, an online system that allows votes to be cast and verified. Something that raised votes in their last parliamentary election by 5%, we would have a different bottom on the chair in the oval office?

The other major issue here is perhaps one that became expressed in terms of reaction. In fact, framing Trump’s success as a reaction by those disappointed with Obama and his democratic policies is possible when explaining his triumph. It is even possible to frame it as a reaction by conservative America to having Hillary as the first ever female presidential candidate. Although why a capable, qualified woman would be less desirable than an ageing wheeler-dealer is enough to baffle the mind.

Some of the stuff Trump has done since being POTUS

A post on the truth of Trump cannot be complete without documenting of some of the more unusual behavior that we have seen. His use of social media, in particular, is worth commenting on, especially his official Twitter account.

There he has called the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un fat and short, although to be fair this was in response to the barb that Trump was old. He has also got into a Twitter battle with LaVar Ball, Michael Moore, and Sen. Bob Corker. While before he was elected, he was known to dole out the odd word of relationship advice to celebrities such as Katy Perry. I suppose it’s nice to know that he cares?!

What can we expect from Trump in the future

According to his aforementioned Twitter Trump, himself suggests that we can expect unemployment to fall below 4% under his leadership.

However, it seems we can also expect healthcare provision to be snatched from the hands of the neediest and free birth control provision to go out of the window. This is in addition to funds being channeled into fossil fuels as opposed to their more eco-friendly and suitable alternatives. Things that many of us find truly terrifying!

In a blog post published earlier this month, Melissa Schuman claimed Nick Carter forced her into an act against her will and raped her 15 years ago, when she was 18.

Melissa Schuman alleged: “He was relentless, refusing to take my nos for an answer.”

In a statement, Nick Carter said Melissa Schuman had “never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual”.

The musician went on: “It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”

#MeToo: Charlie Rose Suspended by Several TV Networks Following Harassment Allegations

The accusations are the latest in a slew of claims to be made against leading figures in the movie, music and broadcasting industries.

In a lengthy post, Melissa Schuman says she was invited to Nick Carter’s apartment while they were shooting a made-for-TV movie in 2003.

Melissa Schuman, then 18 and a member of girl group Dream, claims she was “forced to engage in an act against [her] will” before being thrown onto a bed and raped.

Nick Carter and Melissa Schuman subsequently recorded a duet and performed together, which Carter said was evidence that he “was always respectful and supportive… both personally and professionally”.

Melissa Schuman said she had decided to come forward after reading a report last month that claimed Nick Carter was investigated for assault against a 20-year-old fan in 2006.

No charges were brought against the singer, whose band – best known for such 90s hits as I Want It That Way and Everybody – currently has a residency in Las Vegas.

140,000 Immigrants Could Face Deportation in the UK

In the wake of Brexit, UK is tightening its borders and immigration policy is becoming much more strict. It’s been revealed that over 140,000 people, which includes a staggering 60,000 people who have been declared as illegal immigrants, have been directly informed by none other than the UK immigration body that they may have to serve time in a detention facility, as well as being removed from the UK.

The Independent Chief Inspector of Borders, David Bolt has conducted several reports on the matter and has recently published two reports that offered confirmation that a large number of immigrants have had their fates sealed and will have to leave the UK. Immigrants living in the UK who do not have a legal status will be in the firing line and will face ejection action in the coming months.

Both reports conducted by David Bolt have subsequently been leaked, after being handed to the Home Secretary in May. This has come as a shock and an issue for the Home Office, as the claims made in the reports actually reveal a much less hostile environment for immigrants within Britain, which massively contradicts their initial claims.

The reports revealed the difficulty that the Home Office are facing in ensuring that 80,000 people are regularly attending the police station of a Home Office centre, which has massively compromised the value of trying to ensure that they are removed from the UK. Bolt’s office has clarified that the 80,000 people that have been mentioned amount to a portion of the total amount. It’s believed that some of these individuals have already returned to their own country.

The reports reveal that very little action was actually being taken to actually locate these individuals. He stated numerous cases where the “hostile” approach that has allegedly been adopted by the Home Office hugely backfired and made it much more difficult to track foreign national offenders who have disappeared after their release from detention correctional facilities. As these FNOs did not receive any additional supports after they had been released, they actually have no follow up address of them and therefore cannot track their whereabouts.

Overall, the reports indicated that both the people and the processes were under a lot of strain. It is difficult for the staff in the reporting centres to ensure that the reporting events can be deemed as meaningful, in terms of encouraging the immigrants to depart from the UK voluntarily. Bolt finalised the reports by claiming that the process is riddled by poor communication and inadequate coordination within the Home Office itself.

Roughly only 9% of the overall 80,000 people highlighted for removal from the UK were required to attend quarterly, or in some instances, monthly meetings at reporting centres, failed to turn up, and reportedly 60,000 of these fall into the category of run-aways. The foreign minister has urged more people to come forward and seek help from the local authorities, which would save time and costs on court proceedings. It’s also been revealed that the spikes in the life in the UK test have indicated that FNOs need to take steps to gain citizenship, and illegal numbers have continued to be substantial.

Former USA Olympic gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar has pleaded guilty to seven charges of assault against women and girls in his care.

Larry Nassar was charged with molesting seven girls, many of whom are gymnasts, while working for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University.

As part of the plea deal, the 54-year-old could face at least 25 years in prison.

The hearing comes after a third former US Olympian, Gabby Douglas, accused him of abuse.

In a statement to the court on November 22, Larry Nassar said he was pleading guilty to “move the community forward and stop the hurting”.

He said: “I’m so sorry that this was like a match that turned into a forest fire, out of control.

“I want them to heal. I want this community to heal. I have no animosity toward any one. I just want healing. It’s time.”

Ingham County Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said, noting that abuse is a nationwide “epidemic”: “You used that position of trust that you had in the most vile way – to abuse children.

“You violated the oath that you took, which is to do no harm, and you harmed them. Selfishly.”

Many of Larry Nassar’s accusers testified that they were abused while he was examining the young athletes, and sometimes while their parents were nearby.

He has been accused of abusing more than 130 women – including Olympic gold medalists Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney – during his time as team doctor for the US women’s gymnastics team.

Hollywood #MeToo March Seeks to Shed Light on Harassment

Gabby Douglas, who was one of the so-called Fierce Five that won gold medals at the London Olympics in 2012, revealed her accusation on Instagram.

The Olympic gymnast wrote: “I didn’t publicly share my experiences as well as many other things because for years we were conditioned to stay silent and some things were extremely painful.”

During the hearing Aly Raisman, a member of the 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams, tweeted that she was “disgusted” that Larry Nassar, who lost his license, was referred to as a doctor.

Larry Nassar’s case was part of a scandal which saw USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny resign in 2016. Steve Penny was accused by victims of failing to quickly notify authorities about abuse allegations.

In a statement after the plea deal was announced, USA Gymnastics – the organization which determines the US Olympic team – said it is “very sorry that any athlete was harmed” by Larry Nassar.

They added that it was “important” that he acknowledged “his appalling and devious conduct” in court and said the deal “permits punishment without further victimization of survivors”.

Larry Nassar has already pleaded guilty to multiple charges of child abusing in federal court and could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The former doctor is due to be sentenced on January 12.

Lebanon: PM Saad Hariri Holds Off Resignation

Lebanon’s PM Saad Hariri has decided to “suspend” his resignation, which sparked a crisis when he announced it while in Saudi Arabia two weeks ago.

Saad Hariri said President Michel Aoun had asked him to “put it on hold ahead of further consultations”.

The two men held talks a day after Saad Hariri flew back to Lebanon.

The prime minister has denied that Saudi Arabia forced him to resign and detained him in an attempt to curb the influence of Iran and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah.

Hezbollah is part of a national unity government formed by Saad Hariri in 2016.

Saad Hariri said after November 22 meeting at the Baabda presidential palace: “Today I presented my resignation to his excellency the president, and he asked me to temporarily suspend submitting it and to put it on hold ahead of further consultations on the reasons for it.

“I expressed my agreement to this request, in the hope that it will form a serious basis for a responsible dialogue.”

Iran Rejects Saad al-Hariri’s Assassination Plot Claims

He said Lebanon required “exceptional effort from everyone” at this time in order to “protect it in confronting dangers and challenges”.

The prime minister also reiterated the need to remain committed to Lebanon’s state policy of “dissociation regarding wars, external struggles, regional disputes and everything that harms internal stability” – an apparent reference to the activities of Hezbollah.

The Shia Islamist movement acknowledges fighting alongside government forces in Syria and Iraq, and arming Palestinian militants. However, it denies advising and sending weapons to rebel forces in Yemen’s civil war and militants in Bahrain.

Saad Hariri was embraced by President Michel Aoun as the two men attended an independence day military parade in Beirut. The president, a Maronite Christian former army commander and ally of Hezbollah who publicly accused Saudi Arabia of detaining the prime minister, appeared to tell him: “Welcome back!”

Saad Hariri left Riyadh for France at the weekend with his wife and one of his three children. He flew to Lebanon on November 21, stopping in Egypt and Cyprus en route.

On November 20, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech that still considered Saad Hariri prime minister and that the militant Shia Islamist movement was “open to any dialogue and any discussing that happens” in Lebanon.

Saad Hariri announced his resignation in a televised address on November 4 from Riyadh, in which he accused Iran of sowing “discord, devastation and destruction” in the region and said he sensed there was an assassination plot against him.

Zimbabwe’s former vice-president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose dismissal led to the shock resignation of long-time President Robert Mugabe, will be sworn in as the new president on November 24, the state broadcaster announces.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, who fled to South Africa two weeks ago, would fly home on November 22, it added.

The news of Robert Mugabe’s resignation sparked wild celebrations across the country late into the night.

The announcement that Robert Mugabe was stepping down came in the form of a letter read out in parliament on November 21, abruptly halting impeachment proceedings against him.

In that letter, the 93-year-old said he was resigning to allow a smooth and peaceful transfer of power, and that his decision was voluntary.

A spokesman for the ruling Zanu-PF party said Emmerson Mnangagwa, 71, would serve the remainder of Robert Mugabe’s term until elections which are due to take place by September 2018.

Nicknamed the “crocodile” due to his political cunning, Emmerson Mnangagwa issued a statement from exile calling on Zimbabweans to unite to rebuild the country.

He told Zimbabwe’s NewsDay on November 21: “Together, we will ensure a peaceful transition to the consolidation of our democracy, and bring in a fresh start for all Zimbabweans and foster peace and unity.”

His dismissal by Robert Mugabe two weeks ago triggered an unprecedented political crisis in Zimbabwe.

The move had been seen by many as an attempt to clear the way for First Lady Grace Mugabe to succeed her husband as leader and riled the military leadership, which stepped in and put the president under house arrest.

Under Zimbawe’s constitution, the role of successor would normally go to a serving vice-president, and one still remains in post – Phelekezela Mphoko.

However, Phelekezela Mphoko – a key ally of Grace Mugabe – has just been fired by Zanu-PF and is not believed to be in the country. In his absence, the Zanu-PF has nominated Emmerson Mnangagwa, the speaker of parliament confirmed.

Uber Reveals Data Breach That Affected 57 Million Users

Uber has confirmed it concealed a hack that affected 57 million customers and drivers in 2016.

The breach was hidden by the company which paid hackers $100,000 to delete the data.

According to Bloomberg, which first broke the news, Uber’s former CEO Travis Kalanick knew about the breach over a year ago.

The hackers found 57 million names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers, the ride-sharing company said.

Within that number, 600,000 drivers had their names and license details exposed. A resource page for those affected has been set up.

Drivers have been offered free credit monitoring protection, but according to Uber’s statement, affected customers will not be given the same.

Uber’s new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said: “While we have not seen evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident, we are monitoring the affected accounts and have flagged them for additional fraud protection.”

“None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it,” he added.

“While I can’t erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes.”

In the wake of the news, Uber’s chief security officer Joe Sullivan has left the company.

The company did not confirm precise details of the hack, but according to Bloomberg‘s report, two hackers were able to access a private area of Github, an online resource for developers.

From there it is understood they found Uber’s log-in credentials to Amazon Web Services. AWS is a cloud computing service used by companies to store data.

As is often the case, it will likely be the cover up that proves more bothersome for Uber than the hack itself.

Companies are required to disclose significant data breaches to regulators, something it has by its own admission failed to do in this case.

In January 2017, Uber was fined $20,000 for failing to disclose a considerably less serious breach in 2014.

PBS quickly suspended distribution of the Charlie Rose show following the allegations, which they described as “deeply disturbing”.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Charlie Rose said: “I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior. I am greatly embarrassed.

“I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.”

Numerous high-profile figures, including Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman and Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein have been accused of harassment in recent weeks.

The accusations were sparked by multiple women speaking out against Harvey Weinstein, and a subsequent campaign encouraging victims to share their stories of harassment under the #metoo hashtag.

US Declares North Korea A State Sponsor of Terrorism

President Donald Trump has announced that the US is re-designating North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism, nine years after it was removed from the list.

In a cabinet meeting, President Trump said the move would trigger “very large” additional sanctions to be announced on November 21.

However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson later admitted that “the practical effects may be limited”.

President Trump blamed North Korea’s nuclear program, and support for what he called international acts of terrorism.

While announcing the decision at the White House, President Trump said it “should have happened a long time ago”.

In September, the US proposed a range of UN sanctions against North Korea, including an oil ban and a freeze on leader Kim Jong-un’s assets.

It followed North Korea’s sixth nuclear test and repeated missile launches.

North Korea joins Iran, Sudan and Syria on a list of countries that are deemed to have repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism.

It has been on the list before but was removed in 2008 by the administration of George W. Bush as part of negotiations on its nuclear program.

The campaign to reinstate it intensified after the American student Otto Warmbier died shortly after he was released from North Korean custody.

Speaking to reporters at a White House press briefing, Rex Tillerson said the designation was meant to hold North Korea accountable for recent actions it has taken “including assassinations outside of their country” and “using banned chemical weapons”.

The secretary of state admitted that given existing sanctions it was “very symbolic” but also said new measures could “disrupt and dissuade some third parties from undertaking certain activities with North Korea”.

“The practical effects may be limited but hopefully we’re closing off a few loopholes with this,” he said.

Kim Jong-un continues to pursue nuclear weapons and missile programs in defiance of UN Security Council sanctions.

The North Korean leader has made no secret of Pyongyang’s plans to develop a missile capable of reaching the US mainland and has claimed to have developed a hydrogen bomb.

Last month, Defense Secretary James Mattis said that the threat of nuclear attack from North Korea was increasing.
