Istanbul Mayoral Re-Run: Erdogan’s Party Suffers Historic Defeat

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party has lost control of Istanbul after a re-run of the city’s mayoral election.

With nearly all ballots counted, main opposition party candidate Ekrem Imamoglu, 49, had a lead of 775,000 votes, a huge increase on the margin of 13,000 he achieved in the earlier election.

The March victory was annulled after the AKP alleged irregularities.

The result ends 25 years of AKP rule in Istanbul.

The AKP’s candidate, former PM Binali Yildirim, conceded to his opponent.

President Erdogan tweeted: “I congratulate Ekrem Imamoglu who has won the election based on preliminary results.”

The president had previously said that “whoever wins Istanbul, wins Turkey”. He has ruled the country since 2003 both as prime minister and now president, becoming the most powerful leader since Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic.

In his victory speech, Ekrem Imamoglu, of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), said the result marked a “new beginning” for both Istanbul and Turkey. He said his supporters had “fixed democracy”.

“We are opening up a new page in Istanbul,” he added.

“On this new page, there will be justice, equality, love.”

Ekrem Imamoglu added that he was willing to work with President Erdogan, saying: “Mr. President, I am ready to work in harmony with you.”

With 99% of votes counted, Ekrem Imamoglu had 54% of the vote and Binali Yildirim 45%.

Ekrem Imamoglu is the mayor of Istanbul’s Beylikduzu district but his name was barely known before he ran in the March election.

Binali Yildirim was a founding member of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP and was prime minister from 2016 until 2018, when Turkey became a presidential democracy and the role ceased to exist.

He was elected Speaker of the new parliament in February and before that served as minister of transportation and communication.

Ekrem Imamoglu’s victory of 13,000 votes in March was not enough for Binali Yildirim to accept defeat.

The AK Party alleged that votes were stolen and many ballot box observers did not have official approval, leading the election board to demand a re-run of the vote.

Critics argue that pressure from President Erdogan was behind the decision.

Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city, with a population of 15 million, not far short of a fifth of the country’s 80 million, and is also the nation’s business hub.

Local currency, the lira, down 10% this year, rose on news of the result.

Istanbul is also close to President Erdogan’s heart – his political career rose there as his AKP took power in the city a quarter of a century ago and he himself served as mayor from 1994 to 1998.

The city accounts for just short of a third of Turkey’s GDP. It has a $4 billion municipal budget which spawns lucrative contacts. The AKP has now lost control of it.

Part of Ekrem Imamoglu’s campaign was to allege the squandering of public money by the AKP.

Although less conservative as a whole than the AKP’s rural heartland, Istanbul still has conservative districts such as Fatih, but Ekrem Imamoglu also won there and in President Erdogan’s own childhood district of Beyoglu.

Turkey’s capital, Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir are all now in opposition hands.

The president said he had called off strikes after being told 150 people would die.

Donald Trump tweeted: “10 minutes before the strike I stopped it, not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.”

Attacks on three sites were planned in response to the shooting down of a US unmanned drone this week.

The late reversal was first reported by the New York Times on June 20. The newspaper said the operation had been “in its early stages” when President Trump stood the US military down.

On June 21, President Trump said: “I am in no hurry.”

“Our military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world.”

The president said Iran had downed the drone on June 17, despite an earlier US military statement that the incident happened at 23:35 GMT on June 19 (04:05 Iran time on June 20).

On June 21, President Trump told NBC News that he decided not to give final approval to the planned strikes because of the predicted death toll.

He said: “I didn’t like it. I didn’t think it was proportionate.”

Tehran says the unmanned US aircraft entered Iranian airspace early on June 20. The US maintains it was shot down in international airspace.

Tensions have been escalating between the two states, with the US recently blaming Iran for attacks on oil tankers operating in the region.

Iran has announced it will soon exceed international agreed limits on its nuclear program.

President Donald Trump Pulls US Out of Iran Nuclear Deal

In 2018, the US unilaterally pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear activities.

“Iran can NEVER have nuclear weapons,” President Trump said in his tweets on the aborted strikes – also revealing that increased economic sanctions against Iran were “added last night”.

The US has now asked the UN Security Council to meet on June 24 to discuss Iran, Reuters reports.

In its initial report, The New York Times said that as late as 19:00 local time on June 20, US military and diplomatic officials had still expected the strikes to take place on agreed targets, including Iranian radar and missile batteries.

However, President Trump refuted this report on June 21, telling NBC that no planes were in the air.

The strikes had been set to take place just before dawn on June 21 to minimize risk to the Iranian military or to civilians, the New York Times report added.

Tweeting on June 21, President Trump said three sites had been targeted.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press quoted a US official as saying the strikes had been recommended by the Pentagon and had been among options presented to senior administration officials.

According to the New York Times, top Pentagon officials warned a military response could result in a spiraling escalation with risks for US forces in the region.

The operation was called off after President Trump spent most of day on June 20 discussing Iran with his national security advisers and congressional leaders, AP reports.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton had pushed for a hard-line stance, but congressional leaders urged caution, the agency says.

Separately, Reuters quoted two Iranian officials as saying Tehran had received a message from President Trump through Oman overnight warning about an imminent US attack.

That report was later denied by a spokesman for Iran’s National Security Council, who said there was no truth to it and no message was sent.

In the US, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said America had no appetite for war with Iran, while the leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, Joe Biden, called President Trump’s Iran strategy a “self-inflicted disaster”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said a war would be a “catastrophe with unpredictable consequences”.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint.

On June 20, the FAA issued an emergency order prohibiting US airlines from operating in an overwater area of Tehran-controlled airspace nearby in response.

Airlines from other countries, as KLM, Emirates, British Airways and Qantas, have also said they will re-route their flights to avoid parts of Iran.

Turkey has been threatened with sanctions by the EU if it continues “illegal drilling” in waters near Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean.

The warning came at an EU summit in Brussels.

EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called Turkey’s actions “totally unacceptable”.

On June 20, Turkey launched the Yavuz, a second drilling ship for natural gas and oil prospecting off Cyprus.

The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member, but the breakaway north is pro-Turkey.

The European Council called on Turkey to “show restraint, respect the sovereign rights of Cyprus and refrain from any such actions”.

The statement said: “The European Council endorses the invitation to the [EU] Commission and the EEAS [EU foreign affairs service] to submit options for appropriate measures without delay, including targeted measures.”

A Turkish drilling ship, the Fatih, had been anchored west of Cyprus since early May and had begun drilling, the Reuters reported.

Turkey is a candidate for EU membership but its negotiations are currently frozen. The EU Commission has said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has backtracked on pledges to improve justice and the rule of law. The Turkish government has purged state institutions since an abortive coup attempt against Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July 2016.

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras said the threatened EU measures “are against companies and individuals, a possible EU accession process freeze and measures with significant economic consequences”.

He said at Brussels summit: “These will take place unless Turkey stops its illegal operations inside the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.”

Turkey – a key NATO partner for the West – has extensive trade ties with the EU and has not yet been hit with EU sanctions, unlike Russia.

The US has also threatened Turkey with sanctions if President Erdogan goes ahead with a deal to buy S-400 air defense missiles from Russia.

President Donald Trump threatened a Time magazine photographer with prison for apparently taking a picture of a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The president rebuked the photographer in the Oval Office after he was warned by an aide not to take a photo, according to Time‘s transcript.

The interview continued, but grew heated after the special counsel’s investigation of President Trump came up.

“You can go to prison instead,” Donald Trump is quoted as saying.

The interview took place at the White House on June 17, two days before President Trump traveled to Florida to formally launch his 2020 re-election campaign.

At several points during the interview, President Trump asked to speak off-the-record, including in the moments after showing the Time reporters a letter he said was from Kim Jong-un.

“Here’s a letter, OK, now I’m going to show you this letter,” said the president.

“So this was written by Kim Jong-un. It was delivered to me yesterday. By hand.”

“I didn’t give it to you to take photographs of it – So don’t play that game with me.”

The journalist from Time responds: “I’m sorry, Mr. President. Were you threatening me with prison time?”

Donald Trump replies: “Well, I told you the following. I told you, you can look at this off the record. That doesn’t mean you take out your camera and start taking pictures of it. OK?

“So I hope you don’t have a picture of it.

“I know you were very quick to pull it out – even you were surprised to see that.

Donald Trump has long had an interest in Time magazine, and has previously had fake issues printed with himself on the cover and framed at his golf resorts.

He was named person of the year in 2016.

In 2017, he claimed to have turned down an offer to be the magazine’s person of the year again, which Time‘s editorial staff said was untrue.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Iran for “unprovoked attacks” on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on June 13.

The US had made its assessment based on intelligence about the type of weapons used, he said.

Dozens of crew members were rescued after the explosions at the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous and the Front Altair, owned by Norway.

Both Iran and the US said they evacuated the crew.

“It is the assessment of the United States that the Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible for the attacks,” the secretary of state said at a news conference in Washington.

“This is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise need to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication.”

“This is only the latest in the series of attacks instigated by the Islamic Republic of Iran and its surrogates against American and allied interests.

“Taken as a whole, these unprovoked attacks present a clear threat to international peace and security, a blatant assault on the freedom of navigation, and an unacceptable campaign of escalating tension by Iran,” Mike Pompeo said.

The blasts in one of the world’s busiest oil routes comes a month after four oil tankers were attacked off the United Arab Emirates.

No group or country has admitted the incident in May, which also caused no casualties.

The US at the time blamed Iran – but Tehran denied the accusations.

Oil prices jumped as much as 4% after the incident.

The tanker was carrying methanol and was not in danger of sinking, a spokesman said.

It is currently located about 80 miles from Fujairah in the UAE and 16 miles from Iran. The cargo remains intact.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has fired two high-ranking Moscow police officials, days after anti-corruption journalist Ivan Golunov was freed amid an outcry over a fabricated drugs case.

Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev had called for the dismissal of western Moscow police chief Maj. Gen. Andrei Puchkov and drug control chief Maj. Gen. Yury Devyatkin.

Ivan Golunov, 36, was released after lawyers said drugs had been planted on him.

It also emerged that police photos of a drugs lab were not taken in his flat.

The journalist, who had been working for the Latvia-based independent news website Meduza, alleged he had been beaten while in custody.

Ivan Golunov was later released under house arrest before being freed on June 11, a day after three respected newspapers published the same front-page headline: “I/We are Golunov.”

Kazbek Gekkiyev, Russian TV journalist, shot dead in North Caucasus

Hundreds of people were arrested during a pro-Golunov rally in central Moscow on June 12, many of them bearing the same slogan as the newspapers.

The interior minister announced the suspension of officers involved in the case on June 11, saying that the reporter’s guilt “had not been proven”.

President Vladimir Putin has avoided commenting on the case, although his spokesman said earlier in the week that the Kremlin had been keeping a close eye on it.

He will appear before the Russian public in the annual “Direct Line” phone-in on June 20, when Russians are given the chance to speak to the president.

Russian commentators have suggested the Kremlin is keen for the story to disappear before the event.

Referring to his recent UK state visit, President Trump initially tweeted: “I meet and talk to ‘foreign governments’ every day.

“I just met with the Queen of England (U.K.), the Prince of Whales, the P.M. of the United Kingdom, the P.M. of Ireland, the President of France and the President of Poland.

“We talked about “Everything!” Should I immediately call the FBI about these calls and meetings? How ridiculous! I would never be trusted again.

Fiber is something we need daily in our diet to maintain proper health. In this article, we will discuss what fiber is, why we need it, and how we can have it in our lives. Fiber is a carbohydrate that the body can’t digest. It helps our bodies regulate blood sugar and keeps our hunger levels in check. Fiber has many health benefits and we can obtain fiber through food or supplements.

There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber can be dissolved in water. It has been shown to lower glucose and cholesterol levels. Insoluble fiber will not dissolve in water. It helps food to move more quickly through the digestive system and helps to regulate the body and prevent constipation. Insoluble fiber keeps an optimal pH level in the intestines by preventing microbes from producing substances that may cause cancer in the colon.

Typically, Americans only consume 15 grams of fiber per day. Recommendations for adult men is 30 to 38 grams per day. Women should consume at least 21 to 25 grams of fiber per day. The recommendations for children, ages one to eight, is that children should consume at least 19-25 grams of fiber per day. Young teenage boys, under the age of 18, should consume at least 31-38 grams of fiber per day. Girls, under the age of 18, should consume at least 26 grams per day. Today, children can be given fiber gummies for kids to help meet the daily requirement. Adults can also include fiber gummies daily to meet their fiber requirement.

Having fiber in our diets helps reduce the risk of conditions. Daily intake of fiber can protect against heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. Type 2 diabetes can be regulated with fiber by controlling blood sugar levels. Diverticular disease, or inflammation of the intestine, and constipation can be controlled with fiber intake by helping to speed up the elimination of toxins in the intestines. Research has been conducted and shows great promise for those who have asthma might have incurred fewer symptoms with increased fiber intake. Increasing fiber will also help to achieve a healthy weight and possibly live a longer life.

Fiber can be found in beans, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pears, avocados, bananas, beets and carrots and fortified foods such as cereals. Soluble fiber can be found in oatmeal, nuts, beans, lentils, and apples. Insoluble fiber can be found in wheat, brown rice, legumes, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Supplements can be added to daily diets to help increase fiber intake. These supplements can bump up the levels in addition to food consumption.

The ways to obtain more fiber in our diets start with eating breakfast with at least 5 or more grams of fiber per day. Just adding some wheat bran to the morning breakfast cereal or oatmeal will help. Whole grains should be added to the daily diet by having at least 2 grams per serving. This can be switching to whole grain loaves of bread or cereals instead of white loaves of bread or sugared cereals. We should incorporate more legumes, lentils, fruits, and vegetables into our daily diets. It is recommended that at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables should be in our daily diet. Baked foods can be “bulked up,” with using whole grain flours, bran, or oatmeal in place of white flours and helps to increase our fiber intake. Snacking on nuts or dried fruits will also increase fiber intake. With all this increased fiber intake, drinking lots of water is encouraged to help aid the fiber through our systems. This helps to clean our digestive systems of the harmful substances that cause diseases.

By increasing the fiber in our diets, whether through food or supplements, fiber can help regulate our bodies and improve our health. Ideally, getting the proper fiber levels through consuming fiber-rich food is what we should be getting on a daily basis. This can be achieved by concentrating our diets on fiber-rich foods and using supplements as needed to obtain better health.
