Cambridge Analytica to Close Operations Following Facebook Data-Sharing Scandal

Cambridge Analytica, the political consultancy at the center of the Facebook data-sharing scandal, has announced that it is closing its operations.

The London-based company was accused of improperly obtaining personal information on behalf of political clients.

About up to 87 million of Facebook’s members was harvested by an app and then passed onto the political consultancy, the social media network has confirmed.

Facebook said its own probe into the matter would continue.

A spokesman for the social media network said: “This doesn’t change our commitment and determination to understand exactly what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“We are continuing with our investigation in cooperation with the relevant authorities.”

Cambridge Analytica Scandal: Facebook’s Shares Plunge Following Historic Data Breach

Cambridge Analytica said in an online statement: “Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations and, despite the company’s efforts to correct the record, has been vilified for activities that are not only legal, but also widely accepted as a standard component of online advertising in both the political and commercial arenas.

“Despite Cambridge Analytica’s unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully… the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the company’s customers and suppliers.

“As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business.”

The statement added that its parent company SCL Elections was also commencing bankruptcy proceedings.

Cambridge Analytica’s CEO Alexander Nix was suspended in March after secretly being recorded by Channel 4 News.

In a video, Alexander Nix suggested that Cambridge Analytica had helped run Donald Trump’s digital election campaign. He also detailed ways that it could discredit other politicians, including sending “girls around to the candidate’s house”.

After the scandal broke, the company said that it had only licensed 30 million records belonging to American citizens from the data-collecting app’s creator Dr. Aleksandr Kogan, and that they had not been used it in the US Presidential Election.

Cambridge Analytica added that it had since deleted all the information despite claims to the contrary by others.

In testimony to Congress about the scandal, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that his personal details were among those that had been harvested.

Iowa Approves Toughest Abortion Bill in US

Iowa has approved an abortion law banning most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Republicans passed the bill in back-to-back votes, sending it to the governor’s desk to sign into law.

If the bill comes into effect it will ban most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, and rights groups say it will be the US’s most restrictive.

Critics argue the bill will make having an abortion illegal before most women even realize they are pregnant.

However, Iowa’s Republican Governor Kim Reynolds has not said if she will sign the bill.

Donald Trump: “Abortion Laws Should Remain Unchanged”

Donald Trump Reverses His Position on Abortion Punishment

In 2017, Iowa Republicans successfully banned abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The so-called “heartbeat” bill would require any woman seeking an abortion to have an ultrasound to screen for a fetal heartbeat. If one is detected, the woman will be barred from obtaining a termination.

However, some exceptions have been introduced – in cases of rape and incest, where it has been reported to authorities, and to save the woman’s life.

On May 1, Democratic Representative Beth Wessel-Kroeschell spoke against the legislation on the floor of the Iowa House of Representatives.

She said: “All women, regardless of age, income or race, should be able to obtain reproductive health services, including abortion, free from political and economic barriers.”

Iowa’s Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union groups have also spoken out against the bill.

In an online statement released in February, when the bill was first introduced, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland’s director of public affairs Erin Davison-Rippey said: “These extreme attempts to ban abortion fly in the face of both medical and legal standards, as well as common sense and public opinion among Iowans.

“So-called ‘heartbeat protection’ bills are actually bans on safe, legal abortion, and they threaten to set reproductive rights back by decades.”

Apple Is Returning Another $100 Billion to Shareholders

Apple has decided to return another $100 billion to shareholders from its huge cash pile as solid iPhone sales helped revenues rise 16% to just over $61 billion.

The tech giant sold 52.2 million iPhones in the Q1 of 3018 – only a touch below expectations, despite waning global demand for smart phones.

Revenues at Apple’s services business that includes Apple Music and the App Store jumped almost a third to $9.1 billion.

Apple has about $145 billion in the bank, but plans to return the cash to investors.

After the announcement, the company’s shares rose 3% in after-hours trading on Wall Street.

Apple, flush with a huge cash pile on strong earnings boosted by the US tax cut plan of 2017, also announced a 16% boost to its quarterly dividend.

That came on top of $22.8 billion in buybacks executed in the Q4 of 2017.

Tax Cuts: Apple to Pay $38 Billion in Foreign Cash Taxes Following New Rules

Overall, the company reported a 3% rise in the number of phones sold, while revenue from phones jumped 14%, reflecting more expensive models.

Some analysts had questioned whether demand for the most expensive iPhone would hold up after the initial rush.

However, Apple said the iPhone X was the best-selling model in every week of the quarter – despite costing almost $1,000.

The iPhone’s average selling prices came in at $728, below analyst expectations of $742.

On a call with financial analysts, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook dismissed concerns about soft demand for smart phones, pointing to the millions of people who still do not own one.

He said on a call with investors: “We still believe that over time every phone sold will be a smart phone, so it seems to us… that’s a pretty big opportunity.”

The iPhone continues to account for the bulk of Apple’s revenues at just over 62% of the total. Sales of iPads rose 2% to 9.1 million units compared with the same period last year, while Mac sales slipped 3% to 4.07 million.

Apple’s services unit added 30 million subscriptions in the last three months alone, bringing the total to 270 million.

The company’s overall profits in the quarter were $13.8 billion, up a quarter from the same period in 2017.

Apple’s revenue hit a record for the Q1 of 2018, which follows the Christmas rush and is traditionally one of the company’s weaker periods.

Sales growth of more than 20% in Japan and the greater China market – a critical area for the company – helped to lift the numbers.

6 Job Benefits You’d Love to Have

A benefits package can make or break a job, since it will determine how desirable a role might be to prospective employees outside of the raw salary, the working conditions and other relevant factors.

Unfortunately not all businesses are able to offer competitive or compelling benefits to their staff. With that in mind, here are a few of the perks that will be most appealing to look out for when applying for a job.

Childcare Support

Some employers offer workers the opportunity to get assistance with childcare. This can be in the form of a payment which covers some of the costs of seeking support externally, or via an in-house service.

In the case of search engine giant Google, as well as many other titans of the tech sector, this means offering an on-site crèche, day care services and support for parents who want to bring their young kids into the office.

Comprehensive Medical Coverage

Getting a basic level of medical insurance is common across all types of employment, but businesses that go above and beyond the call of duty in this regard can more easily win loyalty from their staff.

This is not just about covering the cost of essential treatments, but also paying for things like dental work and optometry, which are not usually considered vital but can still be very expensive. Some firms even offer inclusive pet insurance, which is an advantage for animal lovers.

A PEO (professional employer organization) can help small businesses to offer comprehensive medical benefits to staff that match those of much larger firms, which is good news for employees as well.

Education

As one of the world’s biggest coffee chains, Starbucks has garnered global success as a brand. It has also kept employees happy by giving them the opportunity to further themselves and move on to bigger and better things.

For example, it works with Arizona State University to help reimburse tuition fees for its employees who choose to study online to attain a bachelor’s degree at this respected educational institution.

Health & Fitness

Staying healthy is important, but it has its own costs. Whether paying for a gym membership or splashing out on expensive organic foods, there is a price to pay for general wellbeing.

Employees of Eventbrite get $60 a month as part of the company’s ‘wellness stipend’. This is a deliberately vague description for a benefit which can be spent on a wide range of products and activities, so long as they contribute to the health of the worker in question.

In-Store Discounts

In the world of retail, getting a discount can be a big deal for employees. The level of savings that are made available varies, but the ideal scenario is embodied by Whole Foods Market, where permanent staff in both full and part-time roles can enjoy 20 percent off every purchase they make in-store.

The recent takeover by Amazon has caused a few changes at the company, but this benefit remains in place for the time being.

Sabbaticals

A sabbatical is a common concept in the world of academia, but people who work in other industries can also take time away from their job without putting themselves at risk of being replaced.

Deloitte is a supporter of sabbaticals, giving staff the option to take up to a month off without, needing a specific reason, whenever they like.

This period will be unpaid, but the firm also allows up to six months’ away from the office for those who want to take advantage of opportunities that will help them to expand their professional horizons while still taking home 40 per cent of their full salary. Any benefit which supports employees and makes them more of an asset to their employer is worth pursuing.

T-Mobile Buys Sprint for $26 Billion

0

T-Mobile has agreed to buy its rival Sprint in a $26 billion merger deal.

The merger of the US’s third and fourth largest telecom companies is designed to create a more competitive entity with about 130 million customers.

However, the deal is expected to attract regulatory scrutiny over its potential impact on customer prices.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere said the new company would spend $40 billion on building a 5G mobile network in the next three years.

He said in one of a series of tweets: “Together, we will build the highest-capacity mobile network in US history!! I’m talking 30X more capacity than T-Mobile today!!”

The deal comes after months of negotiations between T-Mobile’s controlling shareholder, Deutsche Telekom, and Japan’s SoftBank, which controls Sprint.

Under the deal, Deutsche Telekom will own 42% of the combined company and control its board. Softbank will hold a 27% stake.

John Legere will lead the new company which will take the T-Mobile name and have a market value of $146 billion.

15 Million T-Mobile Customers Exposed by Data Breach

According to analysts, the combined company would have more clout to compete with the first and second biggest US telecoms companies, Verizon and AT&T, each of which have more than 100 million subscribers.

In particular, aanlysts say it would be better positioned for America’s looming shift to next generation 5G mobile broadband technology.

They also believe that, without T-Mobile, Sprint lacks the scale needed to upgrade its network.

T-Mobile and Sprint had been in talks about a potential tie-up since 2014, when the Obama administration stopped a previous merger attempt over competition concerns.

Under the Trump administration, regulators have continued to challenge deals they believe could push up prices and are likely to scrutinize this latest takeover closely.

The DoJ is currently trying to block AT&T’s deal to buy US media giant Time Warner for $85 billion, warning that “consumers all across America will be worse off” if it goes ahead.

As Reuters reported earlier in April, the DoJ has also allegedly opened a probe into claims of co-ordination by AT&T, Verizon and a telecoms standards body to hinder consumers from easily switching provider.

In a statement, John Legere said the merger between Sprint and T-Mobile would lower prices and help the US accelerate its development of 5G, amid fierce competition from China.

The T-Mobile CEO also said it would create tens of thousands of jobs in rural America – factors analysts say could help sway officials in the Trump administration.

North Korea to Close Punggye-ri Nuclear Site in May

The South Korean president’s office has announced that North Korea’s nuclear test site will close in May.

Presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan said the closure of the Punggye-ri site would be done in public and foreign experts from South Korea and the US would be invited to watch.

According to scientists, the nuclear site may have partially collapsed in September.

On April 27, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreed to work to rid the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons.

Their summit came after months of warlike rhetoric from North Korea.

On April 28, President Donald Trump said he would like to hold talks with Kim Jong-un “over the next three or four weeks” about the denuclearization of the peninsula.

President Moon Jae-in’s spokesman said that Kim Jong-un had stated he “would carry out the closing of the nuclear test site in May”.

Yoon Young-chan added that the North Korean leader had also said he “would soon invite experts of South Korea and the US to disclose the process to the international community with transparency”.

President Moon Jae-in’s office also said North Korea would change its time zone – currently half an hour different – to match that of South Korea.

North Korea has so far made no public comments on the issue.

Situated in mountainous terrain in the north-east, the Punggye-ri site is thought to be North Korea’s main nuclear facility.

The nuclear tests have taken place in a system of tunnels dug below Mount Mantap, near the Punggye-ri site.

Six nuclear tests have been carried out there since 2006.

After the last nuclear test, in September 2017, a series of aftershocks hit the site, which seismologists believe collapsed part of the mountain’s interior.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency Kim Jong-un made an apparent reference to these reports, saying: “Some say that we are terminating facilities that are not functioning, but you will see that they are in good condition.”

The information about the Punggye-ri site has been gathered mainly from satellite imagery and tracking the movement of equipment at the location.

Stormy Daniels Lawsuit against Michael Cohen Put on Hold for 90 Days

0

Stormy Daniels’s lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen has been halted for 90 days, an LA judge has ruled.

Judge James Otero said Michael Cohen’s constitutional rights could be endangered if the case proceeded while he was under criminal investigation.

The actress is seeking to end a non-disclosure deal signed over an alleged relation with Donald Trump in 2006.

Michael Cohen had said he would invoke his right to remain silent over the case.

The lawyer had argued that any statement he made in court could affect a criminal inquiry in New York into his business affairs.

As part of the investigation into the Daniels case, the FBI raided Michael Cohen’s offices for information, including on the non-disclosure agreement with Stormy Daniels – whose real name is Stephanie Clifford – signed days before the 2016 presidential election.

District Judge Otero in Los Angeles said there was “a large potential factual overlap” between the civil and criminal proceedings against Michael Cohen.

The judge said that “would heavily implicate Mr. Cohen’s Fifth Amendment rights”, in a reference to the Constitution’s protection against self-incrimination.

Michael Cohen’s lawyers had earlier asked for the Daniels case to be put on hold for three months.

They had argued that Michael Cohen faced a Catch-22 situation: giving evidence in Los Angeles might mean incriminating himself in New York; while invoking his right to silence in the civil suit could undermine his defense there.

Catch-22 states that no individual can be “compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself”.

Invoking the amendment means Michael Cohen will not have to reveal sensitive information in the wider investigation into his affairs.

A lawyer for Stormy Daniels, Michael Avenatti, earlier described Michael Cohen’s move as a “stunning development”.

The raid on Michael Cohen followed a tip-off by the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Russia Denies Claims Its Intelligence Has Donald Trump Compromising Info

Russia denies interfering in the election and President Trump has denied any collusion.

Separately, Stormy Daniels alleges she had a relationship with Donald Trump in 2006.

President Trump has denied having any relation with Stormy Daniels or any knowledge of the $130,000 payment to her by Michael Cohen during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Stormy Daniels says she accepted the sum in return for signing the non-disclosure agreement.

During a recent TV interview, Stormy Daniels said she had been threatened in 2011 in a Las Vegas car park while she was with her infant daughter, and had been told to keep quiet about her alleged relationship with Donald Trump.

Stormy Daniels is now suing President Trump in an attempt to invalidate the non-disclosure agreement, which she alleges is invalid because he did not sign it personally.

Legal analysts have said that Michael Cohen’s $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels could have violated the rules on financing Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Kim Jong-un Becomes First North Korean Leader to Set Foot in South Korea

0

Kim Jong-un has become the first North Korean leader to set foot in South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

In a moment rich with symbolism and pomp, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un shook hands at the border.

Kim Jong-un said it was the “starting point” for peace, after crossing the military line that divides the peninsula. He also pledged a “new history” in relations with his neighbor.

His visit comes just months after warlike rhetoric from North Korea.

Much of what the summit will focus on has been agreed in advance, but many analysts remain skeptical about North Korea’s apparent enthusiasm for engagement.

Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in were met on April 27 by an honor guard in traditional costume on the South Korean side. The leaders walked to the Peace House in Panmunjom, a military compound in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the two countries.

The North Korean leader then invited the South Korean president to step briefly across the demarcation line into North Korea, before the pair stepped back into South Korea – all the while holding hands.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo Had Secret Meeting with Kim Jong-un in North Korea

North Korea: Kim Jong-un Hosting Dinner for Two South Korean Delegates

It was an apparently unscripted moment during a highly choreographed sequence of events.

When the first session ended, the pair separated for lunch and Kim Jong-un returned to North Korea in a heavily guarded black limousine.

When he returned in the afternoon, the leaders took part in a ceremony consisting of the planting of a pine tree using soil and water from both countries.

Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in shoveled soil on the roots of the tree and unveiled a stone marker featuring their names, official titles and a message that read: “Planting peace and prosperity.”

The Korean summit will conclude with the leaders signing an agreement and delivering a joint statement before dinner. The banquet will be held on South Korea’s side and the menu is as symbolic as the other rituals.

According to local sources, Kim Jong-un will serve Swiss potato dish rosti – a nod to his time studying in Switzerland – along with North Korea’s signature dish of cold noodles, and North Korean liquor.

Kim Jong-un is accompanied by nine officials, including his powerful and influential sister Kim Yo-jong.

The Korean meeting – the first between Korean leaders in more than a decade – is seen as a step toward possible peace on the peninsula and marks the first summit of its kind for Kim Jong-un.

The summit carries promise for both Koreas with topics being discussed ranging from nuclear technology and sanctions to separated families, and is seen as an opportunity to foster economic co-operation.

Ahead of talks with President Moon at the Peace House in the border village of Panmunjom, Kim Jong-un said: “I feel that [we] have fired a flare at the starting point… the moment of writing a new history vis-à-vis peace, prosperity and North-South relations.”

He also wrote in a guestbook: “A new history begins now.”

The White House has expressed hope that the talks will achieve progress towards peace ahead a proposed meeting between Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump in the coming weeks – an unprecedented move.

Talks are likely to focus on reaching an agreement on North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, which has advanced significantly since the last summit more than a decade ago.

South Korea has warned that a deal to rid North Korea of its nuclear weapons will be “difficult” to achieve.

Kim Jong-un announced last week that he was suspending nuclear tests.

The move was welcomed by the US and South Korea, although Chinese experts have indicated that North Korea’s nuclear test may be unusable after a rock collapse following its last nuclear test.

As well as addressing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in are expected to discuss a formal end to the 1950-1953 Korean War, as well as economic and social issues.

Michael Cohen’s Documents to Be Reviewed by Special Master Barbara Jones

0

Documents seized from President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen should be reviewed by an independent official, a New York federal judge has ruled.

The so-called special master was named as ex-judge Barbara Jones.

Barbara Jones will review documents seized from Michael Cohen by the FBI to determine if they include confidential communications with his legal clients.

The move comes as President Trump distanced himself from his long-time lawyer.

On April 26, President Trump told Fox News his lawyer was “a good guy” but only one among his “many, many attorneys”.

The president said: “I don’t know his business, but this doesn’t have to do with me. He’s got a business. He also practices law. I would say probably the big thing is his business. And they’re looking at something having to do with his business. I have nothing to do with his business.”

However, President Trump confirmed that Michael Cohen represented him in the “crazy Stormy Daniels deal”, referring to the actress who alleges she had a relationship with him in 2006.

Donald Trump has denied having relations with Stormy Daniels or any knowledge of the $130,000 payment to her by Michael Cohen during the 2016 presidential campaign. Stormy Daniels accepted the sum in return for signing a non-disclosure agreement.

The actress, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is suing President Trump and Michael Cohen to invalidate the non-disclosure agreement, claiming it was void because the president did not personally sign it.

Michael Cohen said he will invoke his constitutional right to remain silent in the civil case, arguing it could affect the criminal inquiry into his business affairs.

The DoJ announced earlier this month it was investigating Michael Cohen’s business dealings, rather than his work as a lawyer, following a raid on his home and office.

The April 9 raid on Michael Cohen followed a tip-off by the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Russia denies interfering in the election and President Trump has denied any collusion.

It was unclear if any of those seized documents include material relating to Donald Trump’s business dealings.

Legal analysts have said that Michael Cohen’s $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels could have violated the rules on financing Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

On April 26, District Judge Kimba Wood ruled that Barbara Jones would be the first to review the material, before handing over documents prosecutors could use in their case.

Prosecutors had initially said the documents should be reviewed by a separate team of lawyers in their office while Michael Cohen’s lawyers argued they should have the first look, citing some of the material could violate attorney-client privilege.

Judge Kimba Wood said Barbara Jones could meet lawyers as soon as next week, but added she would intervene if the process took too long.

She said: “If at any point it turns out that the special master process is going too slowly, I will revisit it.”

Barbara Jones served as a federal judge for 16 years in the Southern District of New York and is a former organized-crime prosecutor.

The former judge was appointed in 2016 as the independent review officer for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in a corruption case at the labor union.

Bill Cosby Retrial: Comedian Found Guilty of Assault

Bill Cosby has been found guilty of three counts of assault, each of which carries a potential 10 years in prison.

The 80-year-old actor has been on trial for drugging and assaulting ex-basketball player Andrea Constand 14 years ago.

Bill Cosby, the first major black actor on primetime TV, will remain out of jail until he is sentenced, the judge ruled.

Prosecutors argued he should be denied bail, arguing that he should be held because he is “somebody who has unlimited wealth” and could flee on a private plane.

Bill Cosby accuser Lili Bernard said outside the courthouse: “I feel like my faith in humanity is restored.”

“We are so happy that finally we can say, women are believed, and not only on #MeToo, but in a court of law,” lawyer Gloria Allred added.

It was the second time Bill Cosby had stood trial for the allegations, after an earlier jury failed to reach a verdict in June 2017.

At the start of the retrial in Pennsylvania it was revealed that Bill Cosby had paid Andrea Constand almost $3.4 million in a civil settlement in 2006.

Ensa Cosby Death: Bill Cosby’s Daughter Dies from Kidney Disease Aged 44

Bill Cosby is best known for starring in the 1980s TV series The Cosby Show.

Around 60 women over five decades have publicly accused Bill Cosby of being a predator. But statute of limitation laws mean that only one charge has been brought to trial.

Some of his accusers were present in court, and cried as the guilty verdict was returned.

Bill Cosby’s lawyer Tom Mesereau insisted “the fight is not over”, adding that he believes the actor is innocent and that he plans to file an appeal.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele, who brought the charges against Bill Cosby, held a press conference after the verdict.

Kevin Steele said, as Andrea Constand stood beside him: “Money and power or who you are will not stop us from a criminal investigation and prosecuting a case.”

When the attack took place, Andrea Constand was working as director of operations for the women’s basketball team at Temple University, Philadelphia.

She told the court she had gone to the home of her then friend Bill Cosby, to discuss her resignation.

Andrea Constand said he had given her three blue pills to “help take the edge off,” which she believed to be a natural remedy.

Minutes later, she was suffering double vision and quickly lost consciousness.

She awoke to find Bill Cosby assaulting her, she said, adding that the drugs made her physically unable to fight back.

Andrea Constand reported the attack, but the district attorney refused to press charges. The case was reopened in 2015.

Judge Steven O’Neill allowed five of Bill Cosby’s other accusers to serve as “prior bad acts” witnesses during the trial, as the prosecution sought to establish a pattern of misconduct.

Heidi Thomas told the court that Bill Cosby served her spiked wine that made her drowsy for four days in 1984.

Former model Janice Dickinson was among those who testified, alleging that Bill Cosby drugged and raped her at a hotel in 1982, when she was 27 years old.

The case against Bill Cosby was one of the first celebrity assault trials conducted in the light of the #MeToo movement, which has raised awareness of alleged misconduct by a number of powerful media figures.

Mike Pompeo Confirmed as Secretary of State

Former CIA director Mike Pompeo has been confirmed as secretary of state after the Senate voted 57-42 to approve him as America’s top diplomat.

Mike Pompeo had been accused by Democrats of being a war hawk and harboring anti-Muslim and homophobic views.

He is the second secretary of state under Trump administration. Rex Tillerson, was fired last month by the president via Twitter amid a personality clash.

On April 26, Republican senators, who control the Senate, voted unanimously to confirm Mike Pompeo. Six Democrats joined them.

Some of those Democrats – including North Dakota’s Heidi Heitkamp and West Virginia’s Joe Manchin – come from conservative-leaning states where President Donald Trump won in 2016, and are facing tough midterm elections in November.

The approval comes in time for Mike Pompeo to lead a US delegation to NATO foreign minister talks in Brussels this weekend.

Mike Pompeo is expected to depart for the trip only hours after being formally confirmed.

In a statement, President Trump applauded Mike Pompeo as someone who “will always put the interests of America first”.

The president said: “Having a patriot of Mike’s immense talent, energy, and intellect leading the Department of State will be an incredible asset for our country at this critical time in history.”

Mike Pompeo has been arranging a summit between President Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The meeting is expected to be held in the coming months.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders tweeted a photo of Mike Pompeo watching on TV as the Senate held their vote.

Before Mike Pompeo was confirmed, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, described him as the “perfect person to come in at this time and lead” talks with North Korea.

Over the Easter holiday Mike Pompeo travelled to Pyongyang, where he met Kim Jong-un.

On April 24, President Trump described Kim Jong-un as “very honorable”, after months of deriding him as “Little Rocket Man”.

US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, also congratulated Mike Pompeo following the confirmation vote.

After travelling to Brussels, Mike Pompeo will next go to Israel, where he is expected to meet PM Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

According to a statement from the state department, during that trip Mike Pompeo will also visit Saudi Arabia and Jordan to “discuss critical and bilateral issues”.

Meghan Markle Makes Final Appearance in Suits

Meghan Markle made her final appearance as Rachel Zane in TV series Suits, which ended its seventh season on April 25.

The actress is due to marry Prince Harry at Windsor Castle on May 19 in a ceremony in which 600 guests have been invited.

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markel’s engagement was announced, the 36-year-old revealed she was giving up her acting career for a “new chapter” in her life.

Spoiler alert!

In the episode called Good-Bye, Meghan Markle’s character married her long-term boyfriend Mike Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams.

Meghan Markle’s on-screen wedding was not as glamorous as her ceremony to Prince Harry is expected to be.

The TV wedding was organized quickly in order for the pair to be able to move to Seattle for new jobs.

It was revealed the couple would be running a firm which takes class action cases against Fortune 500 companies.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Wedding Date Set for May 19, 2018

Suits creator Aaron Korsh said he believes the wedding scene was not the last Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams filmed together – but it was still moving.

He told Deadline: “I would say it was emotional. I remember having a really fun talk with Meghan as we were setting up to shoot the wedding and we were just wrapping up our time together.”

While two of the best-loved characters may have left, it isn’t the end for Suits as season 8 has already been confirmed.

Aaron Korsh announced in January that the new series would “have everything from shifting alliances and internal power plays, to secrets, betrayals and fiery relationships”.

Winning with a Money-Making Blog

Image source The Blue Diamond Gallery

When it comes to rocking your finances, one thing stands out: having more than one source of revenue. And if those sources of revenue can be passive, that’s even better. One way to create relatively passive income that requires only a small amount of work on a weekly basis is to monetize a blog.

Of course, the first thing you need to do is purchase a domain name, set up hosting, and start blogging. Once you do that, you can set some goals for monetization.

Getting Content

Of course, for that to work, your blog needs to gain traffic, and for it to do that, you need content. You can create content, but you can also have guest authors write content for you. The good thing about this is that if you can build up your site metrics, people will even pay you to post their content for them.

This means you not only get content, often for free, from writers who are trying to build their brand, but you can get paid by SEO companies and other businesses looking for backlinking opportunities.

Ad Revenue

Once you have enough content and are getting enough visitors per day, you will start to generate ad revenue. There are a number of places this can come from. Google AdWords, Amazon, and others offer both shopping and native ads.

Other more salacious ads are offered by companies like Outbrain, who offer ads that show clickbait articles with eye catching titles. Visitors often click on these ads, and that is exactly how you make money. Advertisers Pay Per Click to advertise, and you get paid a percentage of what they pay every time a user clicks on them from your site.

This is a simple way to make money, and although it might start out small, it will grow as your traffic grows.

Affiliate Links

Another common way to make money from a website is to utilize affiliate links. These work in a similar way to Pay Per Click links, accept that you do not get paid every time someone clicks on them. Instead you bet paid a certain percentage of any purchases made on the target site after a user has clicked through from your link.

This means that even if the purchaser does not buy the item in the ad, provided they stay logged in to the site (like Amazon) before buying anything else, you can get a percentage of that purchase as well.

This of course depends on the coding of the affiliate link and the landing page it directs the reader to, but often if your content is good and affiliate links are well placed, you can make a decent amount from them.

Finding a Sponsor

Of course, one of the best ways to make money with your website is if you can find a sponsor. This is easier said than done, but depending on the niche of your site, often a sponsor will find you.

The key to this is of course is organic web traffic, previous ad revenue, and an audience that is looking for what your sponsor has to offer. Ideally of course, your sponsor will still allow you to collect other ad revenue as long as it does not include their competitors. If not, make sure the sponsorship is high enough that it covers the loss of those sources.

Having a primary sponsor is one way to really rock monetizing your site. Typically, it is the most lucrative single method, but it does come with its downside. Were your sponsor to pull out, you could lose the majority of the revenue you are getting from your site.

You can prevent this by signing sponsor contracts that will guarantee you income for a certain number of months as long as you keep up your end of maintaining a certain level of traffic and web visitors.

Amazon?

Amazon offers a couple of different ways for you to earn revenue from them. As mentioned above, Amazon offers native ads similar to those offered by Google and other advertisers. Amazon also offers affiliate links. These can both be very lucrative.

You can also set up an Amazon store on your website. Not only is this store filled with affiliate links, but it can also be tailored to contain products that will appeal specifically to the readers of your blog.

Of course, there is a risk. Amazon native ads and even affiliate links within a post can be taken as pretty normal, but an Amazon store often will turn off users who are not fans of the internet giant. You can do some beta testing to determine how these stores will affect your audience.

Either way, Amazon can be a viable option for another stream of website monetization.

Rocking It

Once you have your site up and running, and you have built good traffic because of acquiring content through guest posting and other means, your website will be more of a source of nearly passive income. It’s one way to rock your finances.

Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron Discuss New Agreement on Iran’s Nuclear Program

0

France’s President Emmanuel Macron met President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss a new agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

After talks, President Trump, who is skeptical of an accord that was struck in 2015, spoke about “doing a much bigger, maybe, deal”.

President Macron said a new pact must cover Iran’s ballistic missile program and its role in the Middle East.

Iran warned of “severe consequences” if the US withdraws from the deal.

In 2015, Iran agreed to mothball its nuclear program in return for an easing of economic sanctions on Iran.

President Trump has been threatening to reject an extension of the Obama-era nuclear pact reached between Tehran and world powers by a May 12 deadline.

President Macron had been lobbying Donald Trump to stick with the deal, saying there was no better option.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to visit the US on April 27 to make a last-minute bid to dissuade President Trump from potentially torpedoing the agreement.

Iran Nuclear Deal Reached After Nine Years of Negotiations

Iran Nuclear Deal: US Imposes Fresh Sanctions over Ballistic Missile Test

Oil Prices Hit $75 over Prospect of New US Sanctions on Iran

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif was quoted as saying that Tehran would “most likely” abandon the accord if the US pulled out.

Referring to the 2015 accord which he described as “insane”, President Trump said: “They should have made a deal that covered Yemen, that covered Syria, that covered other parts of the Middle East.”

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron agreed that Tehran’s influence in the region must be part of negotiations.

The French president also stressed that – as well as controlling Iran’s nuclear program for the next decade as envisaged by the current agreement – a fresh deal would need to cover its nuclear activities longer-term, as well as its ballistic missile program.

Emmanuel Macron talked about working with President Trump to build a “new framework” in the Middle East – and especially in Syria.

He said he did not know whether President Trump would extend the May 12 deadline, adding: “I can say that we have had very frank discussions on that, just the two of us.”

President Trump earlier warned Iran against resuming its nuclear program.

“They’re not going to be restarting anything. They restart it they’re going to have big problems, bigger than they’ve ever had before,”

On April 23, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatened “severe consequences” if the US withdrew from the deal.

Meanwhile, Javad Zarif said just hours before the Trump-Macron summit that a probable response would be to restart the enrichment of uranium – a key bomb-making ingredient.

Iran says its nuclear program is solely for peaceful civilian purposes.

Oil Prices Hit $75 over Prospect of New US Sanctions on Iran

Oil prices hit $75 on April 24, the highest level in nearly three and a half years, as fears mounted over the prospect of new US sanctions on Iran.

Brent crude jumped for the sixth consecutive day, trading as high as $75.27 before falling back slightly.

By May 12, the US will decide whether to abandon a nuclear deal with Iran and re-impose sanctions.

Oil Prices Surge After Non-OPEC Countries Agreed to Cut Output

Oil prices have been rising since the OPEC nations, as well as other producers including Russia, decided to restrict output last year.

Last November they agreed to extend those cuts until the end of 2018.

President Donald Trump has said that unless European allies fix what he has called “terrible flaws” in the accord by May 12, he will restore US economic sanctions on Iran.

The other nations that signed the deal – France, Germany, the UK, Russia and China – all want to keep in place the agreement, which has halted Iran’s nuclear program in return for most international sanctions being lifted.

Toronto: Van Attack Kills Ten Pedestrians and Injures Other 15

Ten people have been killed and other 15 injured after driver of a rented van ploughed into pedestrians in northern Toronto on April 23.

Canadian police are questioning the suspected driver, named as Alek Minassian, 25.

He was not previously known to authorities, police said.

According to officials, the incident appeared to be deliberate but the motive was not clear.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said the “tragic and senseless attack” had brought him “great sadness”.

Meanwhile, an officer has been praised for not opening fire during a tense standoff with the suspect, who claimed to be armed.

Video broadcast on CBC News showed a man pointing what appeared to be a gun at officers and shouting “kill me”.

The officer tells the man to “get down” and when the suspect says he has a gun, the officer repeats: “I don’t care. Get down.”

The suspect was then arrested without shots being fired.

Canadian police said the white rental van mounted the kerb on Yonge Street between Finch Avenue and Sheppard Avenue at about 13:30 local time on April 23 and drove into pedestrians along a 1.24 mile stretch.

Pictures from the scene showed bodies covered in orange sheets along the van’s route. Debris and items of clothing were scattered across the pavements and road.

The van was brought to a halt by police several streets away and was quickly surrounded.

The suspect was arrested 26 minutes after the first emergency call was made to the police.

Police said Alek Minassian was from the northern Toronto suburb of Richmond Hill and was not previously known to authorities.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said: “The actions definitely looked deliberate.”

Public safety minister Ralph Goodale said there “would appear to be no national security connections” and Canadian broadcaster CBC cited government officials as saying he was not associated with any known terror groups.

Alek Minassian had previously attended a school for students with special needs in north Toronto, former classmates said.

Van rental company Ryder System Inc confirmed that one of its vehicles was involved and said it was co-operating with authorities.

The incident happened while foreign ministers of the G7 leading industrialized nations – Canada, the US, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan – were holding talks in Toronto.

Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said the G7 meetings would continue on April 24 as planned.

4 Exciting Uses For Drones

While drones are not a brand new invention or innovation, they have really taken off in the United States over the past few years. There are over 770,000 drones in the USA alone and don’t be shocked to see that number skyrocket in the near future.

drone

While many people use their drones to fly around and/or take pictures as a hobby, these versatile machines have many different potential uses. This article will take a look at some of the most exciting and useful uses for drones.

3D Mapping

3D mapping and modelling used to be a bit of a complex topic, but it has been made a lot more efficient and improved thanks to drones. Drones are ideal for capturing large areas from above and observing things high in the air, both of which are important in 3D scanning and mapping.

The improvements in drone cameras and the affordability and availability of them makes them ideal for photogrammetric measurements. Companies like Photomodeler (http://www.photomodeler.com/applications/UAS/default.html) have created software to truly provide cost effective and accruate scanning and mapping.

Journalism

Journalism is all about getting people the news and information they want, as soon and as accurately as possible. Virtual journalism is taking off, and drones could potentially play a massive role in that market. Instead of simply being passive, drones can help us make journalism more active and immersive.

You could capture the entire scene from unique vantage points, giving those who consume news unprecedented access to news and other stories. The video, audio and pictures from the drones can be sent in real-time back to the studio for expert opinion, as well. Think of it like a modern-day and more efficient and stealthy version of the news helicopter.

Making Deliveries

Home delivery is more important than ever with Amazon and online shopping taking off and becoming incredibly popular. Most of the time, the purchases made online are transported to their destinations by a truck, which isn’t really the best way to do things, thanks to traffic and the costs of fuel and maintenance.

As a result, many companies are looking to drones as an option for aerial delivery to allow for quicker and more efficient deliveries. I addition to things like packages, eventually companies like Postmates or Uber Eats might be able to even deliver food orders via drones. While this might not take place for a long time, the potential uses in delivery for drones are undeniable.

Monitoring Traffic and Weather

traffic

Gathering information about storms while they are taking place is not only difficulty, but it can also be dangerous. Instead of sending researchers into storms, drones provide a safer alternative. Of course, the drones will need to be beefed up compared to standard hobby drones, but this option could provide a lot of helpful data on hurricanes, tornadoes and other weather emergencies.

In addition to weather, drones could also help monitor traffic. There are millions of miles of highway, with hardly anyone watching them. Drones could help reduce and pinpoint causes of traffic jams, survey land and keep eyes on stretches of road to make sure everything is going as it should.

China is also North Korea’s main political ally and largest trading partner.

Earlier, Chinese state broadcaster CGTN tweeted that more than 30 Chinese nationals had been killed after the bus plunged off a bridge – however, the post was later deleted.

There are no official tourist numbers for North Korea, but it is estimated that about 100,000 foreigners visit the country each year.

Tourists in North Korea are subjected to tight restrictions – most visitors must be escorted at all times outside their hotels by guides employed by the government.

How to write a good paper and impress your teacher?

0

As a student, writing an essay is one of the most common tasks. However, as simple as it might seem at first, not everyone is able to write a good essay. There are certain principles that should be respected, and this is something that many persons do not do.

If you want to learn the secrets behind a successful essay, then you should take a look at our article. Today we will share with you some tips that should help you write a good essay in no time.

Don’t use sophisticated words

You might feel the need to impress your teacher and you start using all those big words. However, in most cases, they do not help you. Simplicity is more appreciated so you should just stick to the words you know.  A teacher can tell when you used a dictionary for your entire essay and this is not something that impresses them.

Avoid slang

While we recommended you not to use too many sophisticated words, this does not mean that you should start using slang either. Slang is not something that is recommended for a school essay, unless this is the requirement for your paper.

In most cases your teacher won’t even be able to understand the words so you should avoid it at all costs. Additionally, slang will make your paper look less professional, which is not something that you want if you are aiming for a high grade.

Avoid using “very” too many times

A common mistake that many students do is using “very” too often in their essay. Even if you feel the need to make things more clear by using this word, too many repetitions become annoying and they will affect the quality of your essay.

Ask for help

If you feel like no matter what you do you cannot write the perfect essay, you might need some help. Try to talk with a colleague or a teacher and ask them to guide you. Sometimes, some tips from a person that you know can make the difference. If the situation is really dramatic you can even use a website that writes essays for you, as there are numerous options available on the internet.

Don’t leave any mistakes

After you write your essay make sure that you scan it for errors. It is very annoying for a teacher to discover small errors, no matter how good your essay is. There are some common mistakes that most students do, and you should do your best and try to avoid them. For example, there are many people who mistake “its” for “it’s” or “first” for “firstly”. Try to avoid all these things in your essay.

Again, if you are not sure, you should ask for someone to help you. Find a person that is better at grammar than you and ask him or her to take a look at your essay and make sure that there aren’t any mistakes in it.

4 Simple Tips for Keeping Your Personal Data Secure

Today, almost everybody comes with at least a little bit of data attached. Your personal data could be anything from your basic information of name, home address, and date of birth, or it could be your collection of smartphone photographs and videos which has been steadily growing over the past few years. It’s every page you’ve ever ‘liked’ on Facebook, every Tweet you’ve ever sent, and every text conversation with your partner, mum, best friend or boss. Of course, some data is worth protecting more fiercely – your precious photos, personal details, financial details, and important work data would be in this category. Amid rising concerns for the security of personal data around the world, we’ve put together four top tips to help keep yours safe.

Tip #1. Cloud Back-Up:

One of the easiest ways to ensure that your data isn’t lost is to back it up regularly to the Cloud. For example, if you use an iPhone, iPad, Apple Mac or MacBook, you can set the device to automatically back up your data to iCloud, where you can access it at any time by simply signing in on any connected device. So, if you accidentally drop your iPhone in the bath, you can rest assured that your videos, photographs, apps, contacts and messages are just a few clicks away.

Tip #2. Physical Back-Ups:

It may also be worth conducting a physical back-up of your data to a CD, external hard drive, pen drive, or SD card. However, bear in mind that unlike the Cloud, all of these can be physically destroyed, lost, or stolen. So, it’s worth using this in conjunction with an online backup for extra security, rather than a standalone solution.

Tip #3. Use a Strong Password:

Whether you’re storing data online or offline, using strong passwords will help to protect you against a potential data breach. Using passwords that are easily guessable should always be avoided; never underestimate the ease of finding out information today. Let’s say you use your child’s name and your date of birth – chances are, this information could be accessed by anybody simply by adding you on Facebook or checking out your LinkedIn profile. Use strong passwords with a combination of capital and small letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using the same passwords for different sites and apps.

Tip #4. Know What to Do if the Worst Happens:

No matter how many steps you take to keep your data safe, be prepared for if the worst happens. For example, you have important work files on your laptop that haven’t been transferred to the Cloud or a USB pen drive yet, but your laptop breaks down and becomes unresponsive before you have chance to do it. The good news is that all hope is not lost – it’s entirely possible for a good data recovery service to recover files from a broken device, or files that have been previously deleted.

Top 4 Ways To Save On Your AC Bill This Season

0

With the summer season around the corner, we all at some point are tempted to crank up our air conditioners to full speed. Before you plan to do that and completely ruin your budget for the month, why not consider taking a few steps to stay cool and save on your electricity bills at the same time. I have compiled a list of ways which will keep you cool during the dreadful months of unbearable heat.

AC Settings

Most people using an air conditioner do not realize that lowering the thermostat does not only harm the AC but also your electricity bills. If you are unaware of the working of an AC, then let me enlighten you on what exactly happens when you decide to turn down the thermostat to 17-18 degrees. The AC’s we use nowadays work by taking in indoor air, cooling it down and eventually throw it outside. The thermostat basically provides a sensory feedback mechanism by making sure that the outside and inside temperature of the AC is the same. By decreasing the thermostat, you are making the compressor work harder and run for a longer period. The compressor is the main unit in your air conditioner which determines your electricity bill; every degree above 20 can add up to 10% to your electricity bill! Therefore, a safe thermostat level would be around 24 degrees regardless of how hot it gets.

Use A Ceiling Fan

Using a ceiling fan is a great way to save on electricity bills, especially when the weather is not too hot. Moreover, a ceiling fan used along with an AC can make your room cool down faster and more effectively. Purchasing the right AC can also be helpful; conduct a thorough research and invest only in quality appliances for cooling such as Actron Air Conditioning.

Insulation

As complicated as it sounds, getting your house insulated should not be a problem in this day and age. A little effort on your part will go a long way. Think of insulation as a way of providing padding to the walls of your house; it is the same principle as found in a thermos. There are plenty of ways to insulate your existing house as well. The best part is that insulation works both ways i.e. for the winter season as well as the summer season.

Alternate Ways Of Generating Electricity

The depletion of fossil fuel reserves all over the world is like a sword hanging down our throats. It is high time we turn to alternate forms of generating electricity that are not only safe for the environment but are cheaper to produce as well.

How Technology Is Helping To Speed Up Parcel Deliveries

Innovative technologies are constantly changing the world we live in including anything from how we do business to how we live at home. One industry that has benefited greatly from this is the logistics industry and rightly so. With millions of parcels being sent each and every day, everything from letters, to large parcel delivery are moving from origin to destination in as little as 24 hours in some cases, but how has the industry come to such improvement? We’re taking a deeper look into how technology is helping to speed up parcel delivery below.

Online Quotes

Online quoting isn’t necessarily a way of speeding up the delivery itself, but customers are getting the opportunity to find a quote and book their delivery in minutes rather than trudging to the post office to stand in a queue. Online comparison companies can also offer potential clients a much faster way of comparing the prices that each courier will offer, rather than cycling through countless websites or phone up different couriers to get their rates. By offering quotes online, customers and businesses alike will have access to a much more streamlined, well-organised and ultimately much more convenient system.

Tracking

The big demand from consumers today is the ability to track their packages and while tracking has been around for a while, the need for increasingly transparent and real-time tracking solutions is constantly growing. Luckily, the availability of electronically submitted consignments are making it much easier for couriers to track parcels from A to B with increasing accuracy and pass this information on to the sender and recipient. Through doing this, it’s possible to eliminate the guess work previously associated with parcel delivery and instead provide much more efficient updates as to the status of a parcel.

Mobile Applications

The world is going mobile and as a result, the technology associated with our smartphones is providing more and more opportunities for a variety of different industries and the parcel delivery industry is no exception. Mobile apps are making it possible for businesses and customers alike to book shipments, keep track of where their delivery is and even receive notifications if anything changes along the way. The convenience this provides caters for increasing customer demand for transparency with ease, and can allow businesses to more easily track a large volume of shipments.

Automation

Automation is another technology spreading around every industry, but the convenience and efficiency that it is offering the logistics industry is not to be overlooked. From warehouse automation that eliminates the need for human interaction and speeds up the movement process, to talk of potential use of driverless vehicles and drones in the future, automation could change the parcel delivery industry as we know it. It could also provide a solution for back office jobs and give the employees currently spending time on these processes the chance to spend more of their time and effort on other business activity.

Supply Chain Visibility

In a similar way that technology is providing tracking to customers and businesses, the increase in technology is also opening up the supply chain to increased visibility across every stage. Not only will the sender and recipient have a better idea of where the parcel is, but every stop along the way can see what’s coming in, what’s going out and could  better help them prepare in advance to improve speed and efficiency overall. Visibility has been a big issue in parcel delivery in the past, but technological improvements are changing this for the better.

If you’re looking to send a parcel, speed, efficiency and a promise of a safe delivery are all things that you understandably want. With technological advancements making this much easier, couriers from around the globe are able to offer quicker shipments as standard.

Puerto Rico Blackout Hits 3.4 Million People

0

A total blackout has hit Puerto Rico nearly seven months after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island’s infrastructure and power grid.

Puerto Rico’s power authority, known as Prepa, said it was working to restore service to almost 3.4 million people within 24 to 36 hours.

According to Prepa, an excavator operated by a contractor in the southern region of the island caused the blackout.

It is the latest and largest disruption to hit Puerto Rico’s recovery efforts.

Hurricane Maria Leaves Puerto Rico Without Power

A Prepa spokesperson said the authority was prioritizing returning power to hospitals, San Juan’s airport, water pumping systems and financial systems.

Prepa, which has been in bankruptcy since last July, has struggled to stay out of the headlines since Puerto Rico was hit in September by the worst storm in 90 years.

Residents have suffered multiple blackouts since Category 4 Maria, and 40,000 people were still without power at the time of April 18 blackout.

Puerto Rico’s first total outage comes less than a week after a fallen tree knocked out service to 870,000 customers.

According to research consultancy the Rhodium Group, Hurricane Maria caused the largest blackout in US history.
