Dr. Dre is the biggest earner in hip-hop, thanks largely to his range of headphones and audio equipment.
According to Forbes magazine’s Cash Kings 2012 list, the rapper is thought to have earned $110 million before tax, in the last 12 months.
Last year, Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, and Jimmy Iovine, chairman and founder of Beats Electronics, sold a 51% share of the company to HTC for $309 million.
The star tops the earnings list, but has not released an album since 1999.
Throughout recent years the rapper has been thought to have been working on songs for forthcoming release Detox.
According to Forbes magazine's Cash Kings 2012 list, Dr. Dre is thought to have earned $110 million before tax, in the last 12 months
The project has been delayed several times and Dr. Dre himself has announced he will be working on his Beats products instead of new material.
Other artists in the list include Diddy, who makes cash from vodka and Jay-Z who has ventures including a restaurant, basketball team and cosmetics company.
Musicians further down the list like Nicki Minaj ($15.5 million) generate earnings from endorsements and advertising, rather than just from album and single sales.
British rock band Genesis has been honored at the first Progressive Music Awards held in London, alongside other bands including Pink Floyd and Rush.
Genesis members Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony at Kew Gardens last night (September 5).
Keyboard legend and ex-Yes member Rick Wakeman was given the Prog God Award.
The awards, created by Prog Magazine, were hosted by presenter Gavin Esler.
Prog rock, which grew out of 1960s psychedelia, was originally associated with 70s bands including Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes and King Crimson.
Such bands generally eschewed traditional song structures and drew influences from classical, jazz, and world music.
The prog genre flourished again in the 80s with bands such as Marillion, while acts such as Porcupine Tree and Muse have helped carry it into the 21st Century.
The inaugural event on Wednesday night brought together prog pioneers from the 1970s, and newer acts like progressive metal band TesseracT, who won a newcomer award – having released their debut album One in 2011.
“All of us are massive Pink Floyd fans, so to be acknowledged by people of a similar school is quite surreal,” said TesseracT’s bass player, Amos Williams.
“We’re just this tiny little band from England who’ve travelled far, but were still at the beginning of what we hope is a long career.”
Genesis has been honored at the first Progressive Music Awards held in London, alongside other bands including Pink Floyd and Rush
Jerry Ewing, editor of Prog Magazine, told the audience that the music genre was “in a rude state of health”.
“These awards have been a long time coming. But certainly, when one considers the enormous amount of success that progressive artists have garnered over the past four decades, and perhaps more importantly, the enjoyment they have given millions of fans over the years, it felt only right that we give something back.”
The magazine, which launched in 2009, sells 25,000 copies a month.
After picking up the lifetime achievement award for Genesis with Mike Rutherford, keyboard player Tony Banks said: “Our own music has varied over the years. We’ve been fairly broad, we’ve done some stuff you’d call progressive and some you’d call more mainstream. But we love writing.”
Genesis formed at Charterhouse School in 1967 and has sold an estimated 150 million albums. Among their best-known works from the 1970s are Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
The band also enjoyed massive success in the 1980s with more commercial offerings like Duke, Abacab and Invisible Touch.
Past members of the band include Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett.
Among the 10 awards given out on the night, Emerson, Lake and Palmer drummer Carl Palmer was given the Virtuoso Award celebrating a career spanning more than 40 years.
The Guiding Light Award, for an inspirational musician who is “pushing the boundaries”, went to Steven Wilson, best known as founder member of Grammy-nominated British band Porcupine Tree.
Steven Wilson said that bands like Radiohead and Muse had helped change negative mainstream attitudes towards progressive music.
“I think now progressive is once again something desirable – it’s good to have on your CV – I honestly never thought I’d live to see the day.”
Steven Wilson, who started Porcupine Tree as a solo project in his bedroom in the late 1980s, thanked his late father for introducing him to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon when he was a boy.
He added: “When you discover progressive music you feel special – it makes you part of a very exclusive club.”
Canadian rock band Rush’s latest concept album, Clockwork Angels, was named Album Of The Year.
With its dystopian steampunk theme, the three-piece’s 19th studio album has earned rapturous reviews, even in the mainstream press.
Describing it as Rush’s “most solid and compelling set of songs in years”, The Guardian went on to say: “Those who worship at the temple of Rush will be in raptures; for those who remain agnostic, there may well be enough here to justify a leap of faith.”
The Anthem Award went to the title track from Squackett’s album A Life Within A Day. The album is the work of ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett and Yes bass player Chris Squire.
Rick Wakeman said of his Prog God Award: “I’ve always believed that these days there is hardly a band or musician anywhere who haven’t used some element of prog in their music.
“It’s all about freedom of expression, which in my case is often in seven different time signatures! I am genuinely very, very proud to get this award.”
Tom Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields has denied claims that the Church of Scientology embarked on a long-term “auditioning” process to find the actor a new partner, after his 2001 divorce from Nicole Kidman.
Bert Fields called a Vanity Fair report, previewed on the magazine’s website, “long, boring and false”.
He said it was “a rehash of tired old lies” run in the supermarket tabloids.
Tom Cruise and his third wife Katie Holmes divorced in July this year.
The article, written for October’s edition of Vanity Fair, claimed the top-secret project was led by Shelly Miscaviage, the wife of Scientology leader David, in 2004.
Tom Cruise and his third wife Katie Holmes divorced in July this year
Special correspondent Maureen Orth said she was told by “several sources” that actresses were quizzed by fellow Scientologists to find a suitable partner for Cruise, one of the organization’s most prominent proponents.
Actress Nazanin Boniadi, who was born in Iran and raised in the UK, told the magazine she was approached in 2004 and “audited”, before being selected to date Tom Cruise.
The article alleges their first date was conducted “with an entourage of Scientology aides”, but the relationship faltered after a few months and ended in 2005.
The Church of Scientology has spoken out against the feature in a statement.
“There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the church to find a bride (via audition or otherwise) for any member of the church. Never.”
It claimed the magazine relied on a small group of “anti-Scientologists” for information, who had “shamelessly exploited Tom Cruise’s divorce by spreading false and invented tabloid stories.”
Vanity Fair says it stands by the story and has denied claims that it paid its sources.
Maureen Orth is a long-time contributor to the magazine, who has interviewed Vladimir Putin and Margaret Thatcher, as well as writing investigative articles about the allegations of sexual abuse levelled against pop star Michael Jackson.
Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes, with whom he has a daughter Suri, in an Italian castle in November 2006.
Katie Holmes filed for divorce at the end of June this year and the couple announced they had agreed a settlement several weeks later.
South Africa’s Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini wants the government to spend $700,000 on a palace for his sixth wife, officials say.
Queen Zola Mafu, who is his youngest wife, is sharing a palace.
The KwaZulu Natal government, one of nine provincial administrations, has already budgeted about $6.9 million for the royal family this year.
Opposition parties have previously accused the king, his wives and more than 25 children of lavish spending.
King Goodwill Zwelithini wants the government to spend $700,000 on a palace for his sixth wife
King Goodwill Zwelithini, as leader of South Africa’s largest ethnic group, is an extremely influential traditional leader in the country.
Royal household department chief financial officer, Mduduzi Mthembu, told a parliamentary committee that a further $700,000 was needed to build Queen Zola Mafu’s palace.
The department also wanted $1.4 million to upgrade Queen MaMchiza’s palace, he said.
Funding for the accommodation would be spread over three years, said Mduduzi Mthembu.
MPs on the committee said they would consider the request later this month.

Queen Zola Mafu made headlines in 2004 when, as a 14-year-old, she first appeared in public with King Goodwill Zwelithini.
In 2008, opposition parties criticized King Goodwill Zwelithini’s wives for spending about $24,000 on linen, designer clothes and costly holidays.
The royal palaces are in different parts of Nongoma, a rural area about 300 km (185 miles) north of Durban, the main city in KwaZulu Natal.
Save the Children’s foreign staff have been ordered to leave Pakistan within two weeks, the aid agency confirms.
Save the Children charity says it has been given no reason for the order, but correspondents say the move is thought be fall-out from the operation that killed Osama Bin Laden.
Following the raid, a Pakistani doctor was arrested for working for the CIA.
Pakistani intelligence officials accuse Save the Children of involvement – the group denies the claims. Six of its staff in Pakistan are foreigners.
Save the Children's foreign staff have been ordered to leave Pakistan within two weeks
The charity has worked in Pakistan for more than 30 years. Correspondents say that it is not thought that the forthcoming expulsions will have any significant impact on its operations in the country in the short term.
Dr. Shakil Afridi was arrested after it emerged he had been running a fake vaccination programme on behalf of the CIA as part of efforts to track Bin Laden, who was killed by US special forces in May last year.
The doctor was jailed for 33 years in May in a controversial hearing held behind closed doors under Pakistan’s tribal justice system.
It was originally thought that he had been imprisoned for running the fake vaccination programme – but court papers later showed that he was sentenced for alleged links to a banned militant group.
His family have called the treason allegations “rubbish” and his lawyers said they would appeal.
Over the last 18 months foreign staff of other aid agencies in Pakistan have reported increased restrictions on the way they work.
Despite that, huge numbers of Pakistanis have been reliant on their help, particularly following displacement because of conflict in the north-west and after natural disasters, like the floods of the past two years.
A new study suggests that moderate exercise and a regular intake of oily fish fatty acids keeps elderly immobility at bay.
Findings of a recent trial show that women aged over 65 who received omega-3 fatty acids gained almost twice as much muscle strength following exercise than those taking olive oil.
A larger trial is planned to confirm these findings and to determine why muscle condition improves.
The findings are being presented at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen.
Some studies have linked diets high in omega-3 – commonly found in oily fish such as mackerel and sardines – to potential health benefits, such as a lower risk of coronary heart disease.
During healthy ageing, muscle size is reduced by 0.5-2% per year.
This process – known as sarcopenia – can result in frailty and immobility in old people.
US data shows that 25% of people aged 50-70 have sarcopenia and this increases to more than half of those aged over 80 years.
A new study suggests that moderate exercise and a regular intake of oily fish fatty acids keeps elderly immobility at bay
According to Dr. Stuart Gray from the University of Aberdeen, the cost of sarcopenia is immense; either in direct nursing and care costs or in hospital admissions through falls.
“Around one-and-a-half percent of the total US healthcare budget is spent on sarcopenia-related issues,” he said.
The rate of muscle loss is dictated to some extent by lifestyle – consumption of a low protein diet and a sedentary lifestyle are known to exacerbate muscle loss.
Previous studies demonstrated that livestock fed on omega 3-rich diets had increased muscle bulk.
This prompted Dr. Stuart Gray to investigate whether these fatty acids could help reverse sarcopenia in the elderly.
In his initial studies, he showed by MRI imaging that middle-aged rats taking fish oil supplement had a lower loss of lean mass than counterparts fed a normal diet.
“The fish oil seemed to be having anabolic [muscle-building] protective effects in the rats, but rats aren’t humans, so the next step was to try it in humans,” he said.
Dr. Stuart Gray recruited 14 women aged over 65 years and asked both groups to undergo a 12 week exercise programme consisting of two 30-minute sessions of standard leg muscle exercises.
Half the women were given the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, whist the other half received an olive oil placebo (negative control).
At the start and end of the trial, the women’s leg muscle strength was measured.
The results were compelling. Women receiving olive oil increased their muscle mass by 11% whilst those receiving EPA and DHA showed a 20% increase – a statistically significant improvement.
But as Dr. Stuart Gray was quick to point out, not all fish oil supplements contain beneficial amounts of these fatty acids.
He said: “One of the problems with a lot of these supplements is that the amount of EPA varies.
“A capsule containing one gram of fish oil might only contain 100 milligrams (mg) of EPA and some might contain 400.”
His advice for anyone wanting to improve their intake of dietary EPA and DHA was to take a supplement that contained the highest levels of these two fatty acids.
Alternatively, half of the average portion of oily fish contains equivalent amounts of beneficial EPA and DHA as those used in the trial.
The researchers have now received funding to carry out a larger trial that includes 60 people aged over 65 years to confirm the beneficial effects of the fatty acids. The new trial will recruit similar numbers of men and women.
Previous research has shown that men and women differ in their ability to synthesize new protein and also in their response to exercise.
“Older women have similar levels of protein synthesis to younger women whereas older men have lower levels compared to younger men.”
“Older men adapt to exercise and increase their protein synthesis. Older women don’t do this to a great extent, although their basal levels of synthesis are higher,” Dr. Stuart Gray explained.
Assessing whether women and men respond differently to exercise and fatty acid supplements will be one of the questions that the new trial will address.
The trial is scheduled to start in the next month and will recruit people from the Aberdeenshire area.
NASA’s Dawn satellite has left the giant Asteroid Vesta after 13 months of study.
A signal from Dawn probe confirming that it had escaped the gravitational bounds of the 530 km-wide rock was received by NASA on Wednesday.
The spacecraft’s ion engine is now pushing it on to an even bigger target in the belt of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter – the dwarf planet Ceres.
Dawn is expected to reach this 950 km-wide body in early 2015.
Before departing on its long cruise to the new destination, the probe trained its camera system on Vesta’s northern pole.
The pictures reveal mountains and craters that are being seen for the very first time. Only now, as Dawn heads away, has the Sun risen high enough in the sky to illuminate the highest latitudes.
Dawn satellite has left the giant Asteroid Vesta after 13 months of study
Scientists are poring over the images to see what interpretation they can put on the terrain.
Vesta has the appearance of a punctured football – the result of two mighty impacts that removed huge volumes of rock from its southern pole.
These collisions sent shockwaves rippling across the asteroid, producing a deep system of troughs that extends around the object’s equator.
Researchers have speculated that this disturbance might also be reflected in the features hitherto obscured at the northern pole.
However, Dawn’s principal investigator Prof. Chris Russell said a definitive statement on such matters would have to wait on a detailed assessment of the new pictures.
“We haven’t got together to discuss it carefully yet,” he said.
“[The region] is not as jumbled as I had expected; it’s more subtle than I had expected – but the people who are experts in this particular area do feel that there is an effect of the southern impact.”
The Dawn mission has returned a great swathe of data to transform our understanding of Vesta.
Before the probe’s arrival in July last year, the best views of the asteroid were some fuzzy pictures acquired by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Dawn studied in detail the pattern of minerals exposed at Vesta’s surface and also mapped the diverse geological features shaping its terrain.
These observations have enabled scientists to elucidate a history for the colossal rock.
They now regard it as a unique body – the only remaining example of the original objects that came together to form the rocky planets, like Earth and Mars, some 4.6 billion years ago.
It is clear now that Vesta has a layered interior, with a metal-rich core that takes up some 18% of the body by mass.
All of the other objects like it at the Solar System’s birth were either obliterated in the intense collisional environment that existed back then or were incorporated into successively larger aggregations of material that eventually produced the planets we recognize today.
Perhaps the stand-out discovery is the definitive association that can now be made between Vesta and the howardite-eucrite-diogenite, or HED, class of meteorites that regularly fall to Earth.
From telescopic observations, researchers had always suspected these meteorites came from Vesta. But the signatures of pyroxene – a mineral rich in iron and magnesium – in those meteorites have now been matched precisely with the mineral signatures spied in Vesta’s surface by Dawn’s instruments.
It is highly likely that much of the HED material was thrown off Vesta in those two big impacts at the southern pole.
“We have used those meteorites and their chemical analysis to tell a story about the formation of the Solar System and its evolution, and if that was wrong we’d have had a lot of explaining and new work to do. The fact that it is right, and we’ve confirmed it, is really very good. It makes our lives a lot simpler,” said Prof. Chris Russell, who is affiliated to the University of California, Los Angeles.
The Spring/Summer 2013 collections start coming down the runways on Thursday when New York Fashion Week shifts into high gear with nearly 300 shows and presentations over eight days.
Nicholas K, BCBG Max Azria, Richard Chai and Japan’s Tadashi Shoji are among the first to show at Lincoln Center, ground zero for a dizzying array of events around Manhattan.
Veterans on the schedule include Helmut Lang on Friday; Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta on Monday and Tuesday, and Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein when fashion week winds up next Thursday.
Younger designers and labels are prominent as well, among them Jason Wu on Friday; Alexander Wang and Altuzarra on Saturday; Thakoon, Zac Posen and Rad Hourani on Sunday; Phillip Lim on Monday; and Rodarte on Tuesday.
Newcomers include actress Katie Holmes, embarking on a new life as a part-time designer after her much-publicized divorce from film star Tom Cruise, with a collection put together with full-timer Jeanne Yang.
Running alongside fashion week is Fashion’s Night Out, on Thursday, spearheaded by Vogue magazine in 2009 to sustain shoppers’ interest in fashion in the wake of the post-2007 financial crisis.
Hundreds of stores and boutiques around Manhattan will be trying to outdo each other with the most original events, from tarot-card readings at Christian Louboutin to homemade charity cookies baked by model Karlie Kloss at DKNY.
New York Fashion Week is followed by London on September 14-18, Milan on September 19-25 and Paris on September 27 to October 3.
The semi-annual New York Fashion Week, branded Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 2009, is held in February and September of each year in New York City.
New York Fashion Week is one of four major fashion weeks held around the world (along with those in Paris, London, and Milan).
Dates for 2013 have been set for September 6 – 13, 2012 (Spring/Summer 2013) and February 7 – 14, 2013 (Fall/Winter 2013).
New York Fashion Week kicks off the global calendar of Fashion Weeks, and is immediately followed by Fashion Weeks in London, Milan and Paris.
Twice a year – in February’s snow-covered chill and then again in September’s sunshine – New York’s streets overflow with models, buyers and fashion editors alike. For both the Spring / Summer and the Fall / Winter collections, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) promotes America’s fashion talent to the world, from big name designers to up-and-coming talents. With official runways, after parties, and off-schedule events scattered across the city, New York Fashion Week brings a packed program year after year.

Russian model Kira Dikhtyar has revealed the horrifying extremes employed by her peers in the fashion industry ahead of catwalk appearances.
As another round of New York Fashion Week gets underway, Kira Dikhtyar admits getting down to sample size-zero is no mean feat, and some girls are prepared to do anything to lose pounds quickly.
According to Kira Dikhtyar, 22, packs of cigarettes, diet pills, daily colonics and laxatives are the weapons of choice for many, while metabolism boosting injections have also crept onto the scene.
Disclosing what goes on behind-the-scenes, the 5′ 10″ beauty told Fox News healthy models turn to “HCG injections that go with a 500-calorie diet plan to T3 thyroid injections that… speed up their thyroid function, which results in a faster metabolism”.
HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone found in the urine of pregnant women that supposedly works as an appetite suppressant. It is typically injected into the thigh, or taken as a drop under the tongue, however there is no scientific evidence proving its effectiveness.
Russian model Kira Dikhtyar has revealed the horrifying extremes employed by her peers in the fashion industry ahead of catwalk appearances
Kira Dikhtyar added that she has also heard of modeling agents encouraging drugs such as speed and cocaine in the run-up to shows in a desperate attempt to keep their money-making talent from gaining weight.
Fashion designer and former model Jackie Christie confirmed that models employ all kinds of dangerous techniques, such as hypnosis to control hunger and swallowing cotton balls, which enable them to get rid of excess fat or water before taking to the runway.
“I’ve seen models do ridiculous cleanses and diets – the lettuce soup diet, the lemon juice diet, extreme diet pills, etc. I’ve even heard of models detoxing a full month before a show and working out three times a day. It’s insane,” she said.
Nutritionists warn that limiting calorie intake in a short period of time can lead to nutritional deficiencies, which can in turn damage the immune system, cause dry skin and loss of muscle or bone density.
However, with many models wanting to boost their careers off the back of their stage appearances, the long-term health impacts of these unconventional weight loss methods can often be ignored.
Last year flame-haired model Coco Rocha spoke about the pressures on her to foster a malnourished look as a teenage model.
Coinciding with the launch of CFDA’s health initiative, aimed at protecting young women against eating disorders the size four Canadian told Vogue.com: “I was told: <<The look this year is anorexic. We don’t want you to be anorexic, just look it>>. This message was especially troubling given the fact that I was only 15.”
But commentators note that it’s not just the models who feel under pressure to be thin, and that the fashion industry as a whole including publicists, bloggers and editors have can be effected as fashion week looms.
Tweets about the #NYFW diet have been trending on Twitter this week. While many users humorously posted images of junk food others took to the social networking site demonstrating a more serious approach.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2013, begins today in New York and ends September 13.
A bad sleep may be an early sign of Alzheimer’s if a study in mice also applies to people, say researchers.
Clumps of protein, called plaques, in the brain are thought to be a key component of the illness.
A study, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, showed that when plaques first developed, the mice started having disrupted sleep.
The hunt for early hints that someone is developing Alzheimer’s is thought to be crucial for treating the disease.
A bad sleep may be an early sign of Alzheimer's if a study in mice also applies to people
People do not show problems with their memory or clarity of thought until very late on in the disease. At this point, parts of the brain will have been destroyed, meaning treatment will be very difficult or maybe even impossible.
It is why researchers want to start early, years before the first symptoms.
One large area of research is in plaques of beta amyloid which form on the brain.
Levels of the beta amyloid protein naturally rise and fall over 24 hours in both mice and people. However, the protein forms permanent plaques in Alzheimer’s disease.
Experiments at Washington University showed that nocturnal mice slept for 40 minutes during every hour of daylight. However, as soon brain plaques started to form the mice were sleeping for only 30 minutes.
One of the researchers, Prof. David Holtzman, said: “If sleep abnormalities begin this early in the course of human Alzheimer’s disease, those changes could provide us with an easily detectable sign of [the disease].”
“If these sleep problems exist, we don’t yet know exactly what form they take, reduced sleep overall or trouble staying asleep or something else entirely.”
However, findings in mice do not always apply to people are there are many reasons for disrupted sleep.
Bill Clinton has delivered a prime-time defence of Barack Obama, nominating the president for a second term in the White House.
Former US president’s 50-minute speech at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, was strongly critical of Republican economic plans.
Bill Clinton launched a full-throated defence of Barack Obama’s policies, saying his economic policies were working.
Barack Obama will take on Republican Mitt Romney in November’s election.
Bill Clinton’s speech is being seen as the high point of a revitalized relationship between the two presidents and as an attempt to boost Barack Obama’s appeal with white working-class voters.
Polls show these traditional Democratic voters are wary of Barack Obama, but Bill Clinton has a strong record in winning their support.
Bill Clinton has delivered a prime-time defence of Barack Obama, nominating the president for a second term in the White House
Bill Clinton told the crowd that they would “decide what kind of country you want to live in”.
“If you want a <<you’re on your own, winner take all society>> you should support the Republican ticket,” he said.
“If you want a country of shared opportunities and shared responsibilities – a <<we’re all in it together>> society – you should vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.”
Bill Clinton attacked Republicans for blocking further progress on the economic recovery and getting deep into the detail of policy debates.
“In order to look like an acceptable, moderate alternative to President Obama, they couldn’t say much about the ideas they have offered over the last two years,” he said, referring to the Republican convention in Florida a week ago.
Reminding the crowd that Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell had revealed that their number one priority was to get Barack Obama out of office, he declared: “We’re going to keep President Obama on the job.”
Bill Clinton argued that Barack Obama’s economic policies on taking office had prevented further collapse and begun the recovery, but said he knew that many Americans were still struggling.
He compared Barack Obama’s experience to his own first term in office, when “our policies were working and the economy was growing but most people didn’t feel it yet”.
“No president – not me or any of my predecessors – could have repaired all the [2008] damage in just four years,” he said.
“But conditions are improving and if you’ll renew the president’s contract you will feel it.”
Bill Clinton criticized Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who he said misrepresented Barack Obama’s Medicare policy at last week’s Republican convention.
He argued that Paul Ryan had made the same amount in cuts as part of his plan for the government-sponsored healthcare plan for the elderly.
“It takes some brass to attack a guy for doing what you did,” said Bill Clinton.
He also countered a Republican ad that Barack Obama had weakened the work requirement for welfare, which Bill Clinton signed into law.
“When some Republican governors asked to try new ways to put people on welfare back to work, the Obama administration said they would only do it if they had a credible plan to increase employment by 20%,” Bill Clinton said, adding that the Republican charge was “just not true”.
After the former president finished a lengthy and partially ad-libbed speech, Barack Obama joined him on stage.
They have previously sparred, most notably during the 2008 primaries when Bill Clinton supported his wife Hillary’s bid for the nomination, and they are known not have a close personal bond.
Earlier, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi was just one of a string of speakers who highlighted social causes including women’s issues, and economic concerns such as the future of the auto industry.
Nancy Pelosi warned that “democracy was on the ballot” in November.
“Republicans support opening the floodgates to special interest money and suppressing the right to vote,” she said.
“It’s just plain wrong.”
Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren railed against inequality, saying Mitt Romney’s policy would amount to “I’ve got mine, the rest of you are on your own”.
And Sandra Fluke, a student branded a “slut” by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh during a row over contraception, made a prime-time appearance calling for action on women’s issues.
In a procedural surprise as Wednesday’s events got under way, the convention reinstated language from the 2008 platform describing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
In confusing scenes a voice vote on the language was called three times. Despite loud boos in the audience, convention chair Antonio Villaraigosa said he had determined that two-thirds of the convention had voted in favor.
Reports emerged shortly afterwards that Barack Obama had personally intervened to change the platform’s language.
At least 25 soldiers have been killed and four others have been wounded during an explosion at an ammunition store in Turkey, the military says.
The blast happened on Wednesday night at a military storage for hand grenades in the western province of Afyon.
Environment Minister Veysel Eroglu said the explosion was most likely caused by an accident and he ruled out a terrorist attack.
It is thought many of the soldiers were trapped inside the building as firefighters tackled the huge blaze.
Rescuers found it difficult to reach the soldiers because hand grenades lay strewn around the area, reports said.
The blast happened on Wednesday night at a military storage for hand grenades in the western province of Afyon
Identification of those killed at the scene was impossible because of the force of the explosion, Hurriyet newspaper said.
A large fire burned at the complex for several hours and emergency services had difficulty responding to the incident because of the high security in place.
The wounded have been sent to a military hospital for treatment.
On hearing the blast, witnesses described residents in the provincial capital, Afyonkarahisar, taking to the streets believing an earthquake had struck.
“It was probably caused after a hand grenade was dropped,” Veysel Eroglu told reporters.
The soldiers’ deaths come at a time of heightened activity by the Turkish military.
Turkish warplanes have reportedly carried out strikes against Kurdish position in the south-east near the border with the Syria.
Marion Finlayson’s last catwalk appearance may have been over 60 years ago, but she looked as though she’d never been away as she made a triumphant return to the runway at the age of 80.
The glamorous grandmother, who first modelled when she was a teenager before pursuing a career as a teacher, went down a storm at the launch of the 50 Plus Festival in Aberdeen earlier this week.
Marion Finlayson says she is enjoying the experience a great deal more the second time around as she has grown more confident over the years.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said.
“I hadn’t done it since I was a student in the late 1940s. Luckily I don’t have nerves anymore so I just got up there and had lots of fun.
“I couldn’t believe the crowd. There were about 300 or 400 people watching and they were great.”
Marion Finlayson, who is grandmother to Antonia, 13, and Andrew, 11, previously worked as a teacher at Albyn School in Aberdeen for years and went on to work with special needs children.
Mario Finlayson looked as though she’d never been away as she made a triumphant return to the runway at the age of 80
She decided to return to modelling after the death of her husband Bruce in 2010 and says having something else to focus on is helping her to deal with her grief.
“My husband, Bruce, died a year and a half ago after 54 years of marriage, a very good marriage, and I found it very difficult to overcome it,” she explained.
“But doing this catwalk has really helped. I’ve got to meet lots of new, younger people, which I think is good for me.
“I even had a muscly personal trainer in tartan to walk me down the catwalk.”
The widow says her family and friends have also played a huge part in helping her to move on after losing her beloved husband, and reveals that she recently found the strength to go on holiday alone.
“I used to go on holiday to Italy a lot with my husband, and I wasn’t sure about going away on my own,” she says.
“But I’ve gained a lot of confidence recently and I thought to myself, <<no I’m not going to stay at home, I’m going to go>>. After going to Italy I even went to Mauritius.”
Marion Finlayson, who is incredibly great shape for her age, says she likes to keep active and regularly attends yoga and Pilates classes.
“I do yoga, pilates and tums and bums classes every week,” she says.
“My grandchildren are a handful as well, they’re always running about.
“The modelling was something different and I would definitely do it again. If anyone asks me I will have a go – it’s better than doing the ironing.
“I’ve been interested in fashion all my life and I’d be the first to admit that I’m a bit of a shopaholic.”
The distinctive red soles of Christian Louboutin shoes are entitled to trademark protection, a federal appeals court in Manhattan has ruled.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday ruled in favor of the French maker of luxury shoes worn by stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Scarlett Johansson and Halle Berry.
The court says Christian Louboutin is entitled to protect its brand against red-soled shoes made by competitor Yves Saint Laurent S.A.S., which is also based in Paris.
The distinctive red soles of Christian Louboutin shoes are entitled to trademark protection, a federal appeals court in Manhattan has ruled
An exception to the rule is when the shoe itself is red as well. In that instance, a rival may match the color of the sole to the color of the shoe.
This would allow YSL to continue to produce “monochrome” versions of its Tribtoo platform pumps.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2008 had granted the trademark protection to Christian Louboutin.
Christian Louboutin has applied glossy vivid red to the outsoles of women’s shoes since 1992.
Kris Humphries appears on the cover of the new Page Six magazine, looking dapper in a tweed three-piece suit, complete with bow tie.
However, his most eye-catching accessories are the two stunning models pictured next to him, with a blonde and a brunette dripping off each arm.
Kris Humphries, 27, opens up about his desires to start a family one day, and touches on his failed marriage to Kim Kardashian in the accompanying interview.
The Brooklyn Nets star, who is currently embroiled in a fierce divorce battle with Kim Kardashian, told the September 6 issue of the magazine: “Some people just make bad decisions and you just know it’s not what’s meant to be.”
Kris Humphries appears on the cover of the new Page Six magazine, looking dapper in a tweed three-piece suit, complete with bow tie
However, Kris Humphries says he is managing to keep a positive outlook on life: “The decisions that you make, you obviously make for a reason. Everything in life for me has just been moving forward.”
He also played down his Twitter spats with Kim Kardashian’s new boyfriend Kanye West, who dissed him in one of his songs.
In the lyrics to Way Too Cold, Kanye West professed his love for Kim Kardashian and joked about her ex Kris Humphries: “Lucky I didn’t have Jay drop him from the team.”
Kanye West was referring to his pal Jay-Z, a minority owner of the Brooklyn Nets franchise.
When Kris Humphries signed a two-year deal with team worth $24 million two months later, he used it as a excuse to fire back at Kanye West, tweeting: “I’m up at Brooklyn… lucky I didn’t have Jay drop me from the team lol!”
Referring to the cyber row, Kris Humphries told Page Six: “I have a sense of humor. It’s whatever, I joke around. It was what it was. Take from it what you will.”
Kris Humphries also talked about starting a family one day, but didn’t put a timetable on when.
He was recently the subject of paternity reports following a fling with Myla Sinanaj – however it later transpired she was not in fact pregnant.
Speaking about settling down, Kris Humphries added: “I think everyone wants a family of their own one day.
“You’re at the point in your life when all of your friends are married and stuff. For me, at least, everyone runs their own race. You can’t put a timetable on it.”
Opening up about his fashion tastes, Kris Humphries revealed he has been working closely with stylists to carve out a look for himself.
“I think about my style as, like, London meets Italy – edgy but, you know, classic at the same time,” he said.
“I’ve been working with stylists. You don’t want to be looking like you just came out of a Big & Tall shop, you know.”

An international scientific team has published the most detailed analysis to date of the human genome.
The scientists have discovered a far larger chunk of our genetic code is biologically active than previously thought.
The researchers hope the findings will lead to a deeper understanding of numerous diseases, which could lead to better treatments.
More than 400 scientists in 32 laboratories in the UK, US, Spain, Singapore and Japan were involved.
Their findings are published in 30 connected open-access papers appearing in three journals, Nature, Genome Biology and Genome Research.
An international scientific team has published the most detailed analysis to date of the human genome
The Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (Encode) was launched in 2003 with the goal of identifying all the functional elements within the human genome.
A pilot project looking at 1% of the genome was published in 2007.
Now the Encode project has analyzed all three billion pairs of genetic code that make up our DNA.
They have found 80% of our genome is performing a specific function.
Up to now, most attention has been focused on protein-coding genes, which make up just 2% of the genome.
Genes are small sections of DNA that contain instructions for which chemicals – proteins – they should produce.
The Encode team analyzed the vast area of the genome sometimes called “junk DNA” because it seemed to have little function and was poorly understood.
Dr. Ewan Birney, of the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge, who led the analysis, said: “The term junk DNA must now be junked.
“It’s clear from this research that a far bigger part of the genome is biologically active than was previously thought.”
The scientists also identified four million gene “switches”. These are sections of DNA that control when genes are switched on or off in cells.
They said the switches were often a long way along the genome from the gene they controlled.
Dr. Ewan Birney said: “This will help in our understanding of human biology. Many of the switches we have identified are linked to changes in risk for conditions from heart disease to diabetes or mental illness. This will give researchers a whole new world to explore and ultimately, it’s hoped, will lead to new treatments.”
Scientists acknowledge that it is likely to be many years before patients see tangible benefits from the project.
But another of the Encode team, Dr. Ian Dunham said the data could ultimately be of help in every area of disease research.
“Encode gives us a set of very valuable leads to follow to discover key mechanisms at play in health and disease. Those can be exploited to create entirely new medicines, or to repurpose existing treatments.”
BitFloor, one of the biggest Bitcoin currency exchanges, has been taken offline after 24,000 units ($250,000) of the virtual currency were stolen from its computer servers.
Bitcoins can be used for online money transfers and trades, and the currency uses cryptography to protect it.
But BitFloor’s founder, Roman Shtylman, said he had kept unencrypted “keys”, which the thief accessed and used to take the money.
BitFloor’s future is now in doubt.
Roman Shtylman said his New York-based service was the biggest of its kind in the US and the fourth largest in the world.
BitFloor, one of the biggest Bitcoin currency exchanges, has been taken offline after 24,000 units ($250,000) of the virtual currency were stolen from its computer servers
Unlike other currencies, Bitcoins are not issued by a central bank or other centralized authority. Instead they are created in a process called “mining”, in which coins are issued to a user when they solve a complicated mathematical problem using their computer.
The complexity of the problems is determined by the number of “miners”, to ensure there is not a flood of new currency.
Most people using Bitcoins do not create cash in this manner, but rather use currency exchanges – such as BitFloor – to purchase them.
Part of the attraction is they can be used to make transactions that are difficult to trace, offering privacy to their users, and the currency has been adopted by Wikileaks and other sites to receive donations.
Effectively Bitcoins are a very long meaningless string of digits that only have value if their owner uses a shorter related number, known as a private key, to spend them.
The key identifies the address the currency is stored at, allowing the currency to be accessed and transferred to a new owner, who then stores it at a new address safeguarded by a different key.
It is therefore critical that a user protects their keys to secure their Bitcoins – and the Bitfloor exchange used encryption to protect its store.
But Roman Shtylman acknowledged on a forum that he had recently carried out an upgrade of his systems and stored an unencrypted copy of the keys during the process, which the thief took advantage of.
“I realize this is a very serious mistake,” he wrote.
He added the thief had taken the vast majority of the currency that he had been holding at the time, meaning he could not cover all his users’ account balances. However, Roman Shtylman added that account details had not been compromised.
“As a last resort, I will be forced to fully shut Bitfloor down and initiate account repayment using current available funds,” he wrote.
“I still have all of the logs for accounts, trades, transfers. I know how much each user currently has in their account for both US dollars and Bitcoins. No records were lost in this attack.”
This is not the first attack on a Bitcoin exchange.
UK-based Bitcoinica was hacked twice this year and subsequently sued by several of its users after they had alleged it was not able to honor their withdrawal requests. The firm has since ceased operations for what it terms “a transition period”.
Last year another exchange, Japan’s MtGox, suspended operations for several days after one of its accounts was compromised causing the currency to plummet in value. The service acted to compensate users who had been caught up in the sell-off.
A 7.6-magnitude earthquake has rocked the north-western part of Costa Rica triggering a tsunami warning, the US Geological Survey said.
A tsunami warning is in effect for Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua.
The quake was centred about 50 miles (80 km) south of the town of Liberia and was at a depth of 12.4 miles.
It rattled buildings and cut power in some parts of the capital of San Jose, Reuters news agency reported.
A 7.6-magnitude earthquake has rocked the north-western part of Costa Rica triggering a tsunami warning
Power and communications in much of the country were briefly knocked out, according to Costa Rican authorities.
Regional media reported it could be felt as far away as Nicaragua and El Salvador.
The US Geological Survey originally said the quake had a magnitude of 7.9, but revised it down to 7.6.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reduced the area of the tsunami warning, which had earlier included the Pacific coast of most of Central and South America to Costa Rica and its immediate neighbours.
Douglas Salgado of the National Commission of Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention told the Associated Press news agency that there were no initial reports of damage or deaths in the earthquake zone.
He said officials were having problems reaching people in the area nearest the epicentre.

Ellen DeGeneres, America’s most loved female stand-up comedian, television host and actress, finally got a star on the Walk of Fame yesterday.
Ellen DeGeneres, 54, was honored on Hollywood Boulevard in the traditional ceremony, and her lookalike mother Betty, 82, and wife Portia De Rossi were on hand to help her celebrate.
As always the funny woman hammed it up at the event as she posed with her new star.
In addition to the tradition of placing her hands on the star, Ellen DeGeneres got even closer to her new plaque, appearing to be giving it a kiss.
The blonde star wore one of her most stylish suits for the event, opting for a light grey jacket and trousers paired with a white open-neck shirt and black and white polka dot tie.
She also slipped on a pair of snazzy shoes in the form of bright white brogues.

Meanwhile, Portia De Rossi complemented her partner’s outfit by dressing in a flowing charcoal shift dress paired with tan suede open-toe ankle boots.
The couple looked more in love than ever as they cuddled up for numerous pictures.
Ellen DeGeneres’ extremely proud mother Betty, who often appears on her talk show, was by her side the whole way through the ceremony.
And it is easy to see where Ellen DeGeneres gets her looks from, as she is the spitting image of Betty, who has a similar cropped hair-cut to her daughter.
Her mother is one of her biggest fans, and went on to become a LGBT-rights activist after her daughter came out in 1997.
She is one of the first non-gay spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign’s National Coming Out Project.
Betty DeGeneres has written two books in relation to her daughter – titled Love, Ellen: A Mother Daughter Journey and Just a Mom.
In Love, Ellen: A Mother Daughter Journey, Betty DeGeneres describes her reaction to her daughter coming out as a lesbian, and her path from passive acceptance to becoming a passionate advocate for LGBT rights.
Speeches at yesterday’s event were made by fellow comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest.
Ellen DeGeneres received the 2,477th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of television in front of the W Hollywood Hotel.
It has been great couple of weeks for the television star.
Portia De Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres last week celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary, as Ellen also marked her first decade as the host of her wildly popular daytime talk show.
To also celebrate this, The Hollywood Reporter put her on its front and back cover, along with a six-page story inside.
Obese people can be physically healthy and fit and at no greater risk of heart disease or cancer than normal weight people, a new research found.
The key is being “metabolically fit”, meaning no high blood pressure, cholesterol or raised blood sugar, and exercising, according to experts.
Looking at data from over 43,000 US people they found that being overweight per se did not pose a big health risk.
The results are published in the European Heart Journal.
In the study at the University of South Carolina, more than a third of the participants were obese.
Of these 18,500, half were assessed as metabolically healthy after a physical examination and lab tests.
Obese people can be physically healthy and fit and at no greater risk of heart disease or cancer than normal weight people
This subset of metabolically healthy obese people who did not suffer from conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure, were generally fitter and exercised more than the other obese people.
And their risk of developing or dying from cardiovascular disease or cancer was identical to people of ideal weight and was half that of “metabolically less fit” obese people.
Lead researcher Dr. Francisco Ortega, who currently works at the University of Granada in Spain, said the findings show that getting more exercise can keep you healthier, even if you still carry a bit of extra weight.
“This research highlights once again the important role of physical fitness as a health marker.”
Most of the men and women in the study came from a similar background, meaning the results may not apply to everyone. They were mostly Caucasian, well educated, and worked in executive or professional positions.
Mauritania has handed Muammar Gaddafi’s former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi over to the Libyan authorities, state media say.
Libya wants to try Abdullah al-Senussi for crimes allegedly committed during his time as Colonel Gaddafi’s right-hand man. He is also wanted by France and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Mauritania previously said Abdullah al-Senussi must first face charges of illegal entry.
He fled Libya after last year’s uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.
Abdullah al-Senussi was arrested on arrival in Mauritania, sparking repeated requests from the Libyan government for his return.
Libya wants to try Abdullah al-Senussi for crimes allegedly committed during his time as Colonel Gaddafi's right-hand man
The report of his extradition was carried by state TV and the state news agency in Mauritania. There has so far been no confirmation from the Libyan authorities.
“He was extradited to Libya on the basis of guarantees given by Libyan authorities,” a Mauritanian government source told Reuters news agency, without giving details.
According to the reports, Abdullah al-Senussi was delivered to an official Libyan delegation headed by the minister of justice.
If confirmed, Abdullah al-Senussi’s extradition to Libya will be a blow for the ICC.
Not only has the court been trying to win custody of Abdullah al-Senussi, he says, it is also arguing that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’ son Seif al-Islam should also be brought to justice at the court.
It is not known if he is still in the country although one official quoted by AP news agency said the former spy-chief left Mauritania on Wednesday on a Libya-bound flight.
A witness at the airport was quoted as saying Abdullah al-Senussi was not handcuffed and seemed in good spirits as he boarded the plane.
In March, Abdullah al-Senussi was arrested at Nouakchott airport in Mauritania after flying in from Morocco. He was disguised as a Tuareg chieftain and was carrying a fake passport.
He was later charged with illegally entering the country and using forged documents, and transferred to the civilian prison in Nouakchott. However, it is believed he has spent most of his time in Mauritania under house arrest at a private villa.
In June 2011, the ICC issued a warrant for Abdullah al-Senussi for crimes against humanity alleged to have been carried out in Benghazi, the main base of the Libyan opposition during the revolt last year.
France has already sentenced Abdullah al-Senussi to life imprisonment for the shooting down of a UTA airliner over Niger in 1989 in which 170 people were killed.
He has been accused of various human rights abuses including his alleged role in the 1996 massacre of more than 1,000 inmates at the Abu Salim prison in Tripoli.
Abdullah al-Senussi is alleged to have ordered guards standing on grated ceilings above the inmates to fire down on them, after riots broke out over demands for better food and conditions.
He is also believed to have information about Libyans kidnapped and assassinated abroad during Gaddafi’s rule, and the financing of terrorist organizations, especially in Africa.
Investigators in the US and UK also believe he may have further knowledge about the 1988 airliner bombing over Lockerbie in Scotland in which 270 people died.
Earlier this year, US House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who led a delegation to the region, said Washington had a “particular interest” in seeing Abdullah al-Senussi arrested “because of his role with the Lockerbie bombing”.

He briefly fled to a US consulate in February, triggering a series of events that led to the downfall of the powerful politician Bo Xilai.
Bo Xilai’s wife, Gu Kailai, has since been given a suspended death sentence for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.
Bo Xilai had been tipped for promotion to China’s highest leadership this year.
Wang Lijun was the former police chief of the south-western Chinese city of Chongqing and had a reputation for being tough on organized crime.
In early February, the Chongqing city government said Wang Lijun had been shifted to another job.
Four days later, he fled to the US consulate in Chengdu, near Chongqing, where many believe he sought asylum.
He spent the night there but was persuaded to leave a day later. He gave himself up to police and has been in detention since then.
According to the UK Foreign Office, Wang Lijun made allegations about Neil Heywood’s death while at the consulate.
Shortly afterwards, Bo Xilai was sacked as Chongqing’s Communist party chief, and his wife Gu Kailai was accused and later convicted of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood.
The charges against Wang Lijun appear to be an attempt to bring the scandal to an end before China embarks on a change of leadership later this year.
