Hurricane Earl Arrives in Belize

Hurricane Earl makes landfall in Belize, in Central America, the US National Hurricane Center has announced.

Earl now has speeds of up to 80mph, with the eye of the storm now passing just north of Belize City.

Belize’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) warned of flash flooding and mudslides in Earl’s wake.

Heavy rains have fallen on Honduras. The storm is forecast to continue through northern Guatemala into Mexico.

Authorities have urged Belize City residents and other coastal communities to move inland and take advantage of higher ground or a network of storm shelters.

Officials ordered the closure of Belize City’s international airport while archaeological reserves and national parks were also shut.

The storm is expected to lessen when as it moves inland.

In the meantime, NEMO officials say heavy rain could cause flash floods and mudslides, with a storm surge possible along the shore.

They have warned of trees being blown down, power cuts and damage to houses and buildings which will be hit by flying objects and projectiles.

After Earl passes through across Belize, it is expected to go through a northern rural part of Guatemala and from there into south-eastern Mexico.

Guatemala at this time of the year has its rainy season with often fatal flooding and mudslides.

Meanwhile, Mexican authorities say that the southern states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatan are likely to be affected by Earl and have issued an alert.

The storm knocked over a large numbers of trees and utility poles in Honduras, officials say.

At least nine people died on August 1 in Haiti and the Dominican Republic as the storm passed over the Caribbean.

Jade Rabbit: China’s First Moon Mission Shuts Down After 31 Months

Chinese Jade Rabbit Moon rover has bid its final farewell and shut down after 31 months of exploration, far outliving its expected lifespan.

Jade Rabbit arrived on the Moon in December 2013 in the Chang’e-3 space mission, and has been exploring the surface in search of natural resources.

The rover made China the third country to reach the Moon after Russia and the US.

Jade Rabbit has also been an active social media. Its final message said: “The Moon has prepared a long dream for me.”

The rover is named after Yutu, the pet rabbit of the Chinese Moon goddess Chang’e, in turn the namesake of the lunar mission.

Designed to survive just three months, Jade Rabbit had been operating for more than two years, lasting longer than Russia’s 1970 Moon rover Lunokhod 1, which lived a total of 11 months.

The Jade Rabbit’s main objective was to achieve China’s first soft-landing on the moon, as well as to explore the surface.

On Weibo, Jade Rabbit has a following of over 600,000 fans.

It has kept them updated with news of its discoveries, as well as cute cartoons about its antics.

In February 2014, Jade Rabbit briefly went quiet during a lunar night, but after recovering from mechanical difficulties posted the message: “Hi, anybody there?”

In a message sent on July 31 it said: “This time it really is goodnight.”

“There are still many questions I would like answers to, but I’m the rabbit that has seen the most stars.

“The Moon has prepared a long dream for me, I don’t know what it will be like – will I be a Mars explorer, or be sent back to Earth?”

China’s space agency confirmed Jade Rabbit’s demise on August 3 and netizens have been mourning his loss.

Jade Rabbit joins 60 American and Russian space vehicles, three Apollo buggies and two golf balls – hit by astronaut Alan Shepard – left behind on the Moon.

China sent its first astronaut into space in 2003, and since then has taken huge advancements, including the deployment of an experimental space station.

Nicaragua Elections 2016: President Daniel Ortega Picks First Lady as Running Mate

Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega Saavedra has named First Lady Rosario Murillo as his running mate and candidate for vice-president as he seeks re-election for a third term.

Rosario Murillo already has a prominent role as the chief government spokeswoman and is widely seen as sharing power with her husband.

The first lady appears on Nicaraguan TV almost every day.

Critics accuse President Daniel Ortega and his wife of running Nicaragua – which has elections in November – like a personal fiefdom.

While Daniel Ortega rarely speaks to the media, Rosario Murillo is regularly seen on TV discussing policy and promoting her own brand of New Age spirituality.

Mother of the president’s seven children, Rosario Murillo is fluent in English and French in addition to being a renowned poet.

Rosario Murillo also has a reputation for wearing colorfully extravagant outfits and jewelry more commonly seen in the hippy 1960s.

Correspondents say many Nicaraguans see Rosario Murillo as wielding the most power in her country because of her higher public profile.

Daniel Ortega, 70, and his 65-year-old wife officially submitted their candidacy papers in the capital Managua, accompanied by the legal adviser of their Sandinista party.

Hundreds of Sandinista supporters cheered the couple when they left the building.

However, opposition supporters are concerned her promotion may herald the rise of a new family dynasty in the impoverished Central American nation.

Daniel Ortega is a former left-wing guerrilla who formed part of the government junta following the Sandinista revolution against the dictatorship of the Somoza family, which ruled Nicaragua for four decades.

The Cuban-inspired Sandinistas seized power in 1979.

The party lost elections in the 1990s, but Daniel Ortega returned to power in January 2007, after a successful election campaign.

Why Are Teens & Young Adults Still Smoking?

While there has been great progress in reducing the number of teen smokers in the past decade or so, the figures are still stark. As many as 5.6 million American youngsters will suffer from an early death due to an illness caused by smoking and tobacco. It’s an enormous figure, and begs the question: why are they still using cigarettes?

There are many factors at play, here. For many people, becoming a teen is the start of a process of experimentation. But it is also a period of life where issues such as self-esteem and stress start occurring. There is the peer pressure factor, too – which still has a strong effect on teenagers who want to fit in with their friends.

We’re going to look at all the factors that are affecting teenage and young adult decision-making when it comes to starting smoking. With so many avoidable illnesses still on the horizon, it is vital to shed some light on the reasons why. Let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons teenagers start smoking.

Becoming adults

One of the biggest reasons teens start to smoke is simply because they are becoming adults. The older you get in your teen years, the more likely you are to smoke or use tobacco products on a regular basis. There is a slight discrepancy here in that younger adolescents are more likely to try smoking. However, as youngsters grow into their late teens, these one-off experiences are more likely to develop into a habit.

Addiction

As everyone knows, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on the planet. It makes perfect sense, then, that the earlier a teenager starts smoking, the more likely they are to form a habit in the later teen years. The stark facts are that the tobacco industry targets these people as they make up the vast majority of customers. Around 90% of all people who smoke started out as an adolescent. Clearly, if people can delay starting using tobacco and other products until they become a young adult, there will be fewer smokers.

Genetic disposition

On the subject of addiction, it’s vital to understand people have a genetic disposition for enjoying substances. The drug affects people’s brains in different ways, and there is evidence to suggest that some are more likely to become an addict than others. It might be worth talking to your doctor if there are addicts in your family, as there may well be a genetic cause underpinning all of it. While there is no single addiction gene, research shows that some genes have causal links. For example, the A1 allele of the dopamine receptor gene DRD2 is more common in people with cocaine and alcohol addictions. Similarly, there are protective genes. The CYP2A6 gene, for example, can cause people to feel nausea and dizziness from smoking.

Cultural background

Your cultural background also has a big impact on the chances of you starting to smoke in your teen years. White adolescent males are more likely to start smoking than their black or Hispanic contemporaries. Conversely, black teens are more likely to start using other tobacco products such as cigars. But, it’s multi-ethnic people with a mixed heritage that are the largest demographic of teen smokers.

Weight issues

Weight issues are a serious problem for adolescents. They often result in concerns about body image, and can lead to conditions such as bulimia and anorexia. However, there is a widely held notion that smoking can suppress appetite. So, it’s no surprise that many teens use this as a method of combating weight problems. Again, it’s a clear sign that other psychological factors are in play when it comes to teens smoking and developing an addiction.

Mixing e-cigs and real cigs

As any e-cig or vaping guide will tell you, e-cigarettes are a fantastic way to give up smoking. However, the benefits of moving from tobacco to e-liquid are lost when real cigarettes are still in use. While many teens are using e-cigarettes as a substitute for smoking, others are using it in combination. And, there is increasing evidence that some teens are starting to vape, despite not being a smoker. The result is an enormous spike in nicotine addiction amongst teens. And, there is a concern that it could lead to the rate of teen smokers rising for the first time in several decades.

Peer pressure

As we mentioned in our introduction, peer pressure is an enormous factor when addressing why teenagers smoke. The simple fact is that as teens explore who they are, they are drawn to others with similar interests. They want to fit in, too, so will often make choices based on peer pressure in an attempt to be part of the group. While most will not continue smoking beyond a certain point, there is still a high percentage of teen smokers that will carry on into adulthood.

Lack of physical impact

Teenagers see the same health warnings we all see. The pictures of black lungs, the terrible teeth, and all the other disturbing imagery that we associate with smoking. The problem is, teens are all too aware that these examples are all from much older people. And, given that the teenage body can handle the effects of smoking a lot better than older folks, they have a sense of invincibility. Adolescents don’t believe they will suffer from addiction and think they can quit at any time. It is likely they still feel the same twenty years down the line.

Lack of further education

Young people who don’t go to college are more likely to smoke than those that do. It is unclear why this is, although an interest in self-development is likely to be among the primary causes. There is also an issue with young people’s parents’ educations. Unqualified adults are more apt to raise teen smokers than those who go to college and university.

Exposure to stressful events

Young people who have been exposed to high levels of stress as a child are more likely to start smoking when they reach the teenage years. In fact, there is a good chance this pivotal event could occur by as soon as they hit the age of fourteen. Witnessing violence at close hand, or being the victim of abuse of any form can often be the driver for your teens. However, factors such as parental separation or mental health problems can also contribute.

Risk taking

Of course, the teenage years are all about becoming adults, while still retaining a sense of youthful immortality. It’s no secret that having access to all kinds of substances – and the freedom to explore them – is a big draw for teenagers. This, combined with the likelihood of taking more risks, is a potent cocktail that can often lead to early nicotine addiction.

teenage-smoking

The nature of nicotine

While smoking causes many people to feel ill, the effects can start to subside quickly. As the body gets used to inhaling, teenagers will start to feel the ‘buzz’ of smoking. The trouble is, these effects do not last for a long time, and the reward feeling disappears after a few minutes. It is the nature of nicotine that causes people to reach for the cigarettes again and again. Plus, there are symptoms of withdrawal to contend with, which can manifest a lot stronger in a young person’s brain. By their nature, teens can be irritable, lack the ability to concentrate, and have disturbed sleep patterns. Nicotine withdrawal can make all of these typical teen problems even worse. It makes sense, then, for teens to smoke when it appears to be a cure for their ails.

The element of cool

Despite the clampdown in cigarette adverts, many teens still feel that smoking is a match for their rebellious natures. They don’t have to look far for inspiration. Plenty of iconic photos from years and decades gone by still have a cultural impact – and many of them feature smoking. There is still an allure that cigarettes are cool and alternative for many teens. Think James Dean and the constant stream of rock stars puffing away like chimneys. Picture the sultry look of a celebrity with a cigarette hanging loosely from their lips. It is often a better advert for tobacco companies than they could ever hope for.

Conclusion

As you can see, many different factors encourage teens to start smoking. While most will give up before they become adults, many do not. And, the volume of people that will die from related illnesses is still far too high. While the rise of e-cigarettes is helping older people quit tobacco products, it is unclear if the same is happening with teenagers. In fact, it could well be exacerbating nicotine addiction – and the health impacts are yet to be known. In an ideal world, we would all be able to ward off our children from starting to smoke. The best we can do is furnish them with as much knowledge as we can. Good luck!

Man Spends Ten Days in Chinese Airport Waiting for His Girlfriend

0

A Dutch man spent ten days in a Chinese airport to wait for his girlfriend.

At the end of his trip the 41-year-old man was hospitalized for exhaustion.

Alexander Pieter Cirk recently flew from the Netherlands to Chinese province of Hunan in the hope of meeting his online girlfriend, a Chinese woman known only as Zhang.

He ended up spending ten days waiting at Changsha airport, after Zhang failed to show up.Alexander Pieter Cirk China airport

Alexander Pieter Cirk told Chinese media that he met 26-year-old Zhang in an app two months ago and romance blossomed.

He decided to fly to visit her, but when he got to Hunan found no-one had come to meet him.

Alexander Pieter Cirk refused to leave the airport for the next 10 days, and was eventually taken to hospital suffering physical exhaustion, according to reports by Hunan TV.

Zhang contacted the TV channel a day after the report aired to give her side, saying that she had thought it had all been a joke.

She also said that by the time Alexander Pieter Cirk arrived at the airport, she was away having plastic surgery in another province and had turned off her phone.

On Chinese social media, the majority of users were keen to point out the apparent absurdity of the man’s actions.

The hashtag “Foreign man went to Changsha to meet his online girlfriend” has been trending on Weibo.

Alexander Pieter Cirk was scheduled to fly home earlier this week.

Zhang reportedly said she would be keen to meet him after her recovery, saying she was still interested in maintaining their relationship.

The Simpsons Agree to Vote for Hillary Clinton

The Simpsons agree to vote for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the forthcoming election in a new video clip released by 20th Century Fox.

The standalone clip, entitled 3am, has been made public via YouTube.

Donald Trump is seen with a copy of a book called Great Speeches by A. Hitler in the video.

When Homer Simpson signals that he might vote for Donald Trump, Marge says: “If that’s your vote, I question whether I can ever be with you again.”

He replies: “And that’s how I became a Democrat.”Simpsons divorce rumors

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are set to face each other in the presidential election, which takes place on November 8.

Marge and Homer Simpson’ discussion comes about when Marge says that she “can’t make love until I’ve decided who to vote for”.

The narrator then poses the question: “It’s 3am and the phone is ringing in the White House – who do you want to answer that call?”

The question is a reference to Hillary Clinton’s political campaign of 2008, which ran an ad featuring a ringing phone at 3am, asking Americans who they wanted leading their country during a time of crisis.

Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are then seen responding to such a phone call.

Donald Trump responds by saying: “Not now, I’m on Twitter.”

The Republican then orders an aide to: “Put my name on the Lincoln memorial, disband NATO… and make me some scrambled eggs on gold plates.”

Former President Bill Clinton is seen initially answering the phone with: “The situation room? I’ll be right there.”

Bill Clinton’s face then falls as he hands the phone to Hillary, saying: “Oh, it’s for you.”

Hillary Clinton replies: “Yes, from now on, it’s always for me.”

Donald Trump Calls Hillary Clinton A Devil and Suggests Vote Could Be Rigged

Donald Trump has suggested that this year’s election could be “rigged”.

The Republican nominee told a rally in Columbus, Ohio, that he had heard “more and more” that the contest would be unfair. He offered no immediate evidence.

At another event Donald Trump called Democratic rival Hillary Clinton “the devil”.

He has come under fire from across the political divide for remarks he made about the parents of a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq.

On the forthcoming vote, Donald Trump told supporters: “I’m afraid the election is going to be rigged, I have to be honest.”Donald Trump San Diego rally

He later repeated the claim on Fox News, adding: “I hope the Republicans are watching closely or it’s going to be taken away from us.”

Donald Trump has made similar comments before in relation to the Democratic race, suggesting the party fixed its system to favor nominee Hillary Clinton over her challenger Bernie Sanders.

Earlier this year, Donald Trump also complained the Republican primary system was also “rigged” amid party efforts to stop his march to the candidacy.

Correspondents say the New York billionaire could be trying to capitalize on voters’ distrust of establishment institutions, or lay the groundwork should he lose the election.

At another rally in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump took the unprecedented step of directly calling Hillary Clinton “the devil”.

He attacked Bernie Sanders for capitulating in the Democratic race, saying he “made a deal with the devil. She’s the devil”.

Democrats and Republicans alike have condemned Donald Trump for his remarks about the parents of Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed by a car bomb in 2004 in Iraq, at the age of 27.

Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain became the latest senior figure in the party to criticize Donald Trump for his attacks.

John McCain, a veteran of the Vietnam War, said in a strongly worded statement that Donald Trump did not have “unfettered license to defame the best among us”.

Donald Trump had caused controversy by suggesting Humayun Khan’s mother, Ghazala Khan, had been prevented from speaking alongside her husband at the Democratic convention last week.

In another development, Warren Buffett challenged Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

Donald Trump has said that they cannot be made public until the financial authorities have completed an audit.

However, Warren Buffett said there were no rules against showing tax returns and allowing people to ask questions about them.

VW Emissions Scandal: South Korea Suspends Sales of 80 Models

The sales of 80 Volkswagen models have been suspended in South Korea and the automaker will be fined over allegations the company rigged emissions test data.

VW will be fined 17.8 billion Korean won ($16 million), in addition to a 14 billion won fine from 2015, the ministry of environment said.

The German automaker admitted last year that it had falsified emissions data in its diesel vehicles.

VW has since suffered a global setback in sales and reputation.VW emissions scandal 2016

The sales ban in South Korea affects 32 types of cars – including the VW Golf and Jetta – but a total of 80 models, which include different size engines or trimmings of each type of car.

The ban, which affect VW, Audi and Bentley models, come as the result of an extensive probe into the company which saw the automaker’s offices in South Korea raided by investigators.

South Korea’s environment ministry also revoked certification for an additional 83,000 cars, bringing the total number of cars de-certified to more than 200,000.

That is about 68% of the 300,000 cars sold by VW in Korea since 2007, Yonhap news agency said.

South Korea is an important market for VW, especially for the company’s luxury brands Bentley and Audi, and the company had more than tripled its sales before it was hit by a slump in the wake of the emissions scandal.

Nicolas Maduro Recall: Venezuela Election Council Approves First Step

The first step in Venezuela’s opposition campaign to recall President Nicolas Maduro has been approved, the national election council has announced.

The council said the opposition had succeeded in gathering 1% of voter signatures in all 24 of Venezuela’s states.

The move is the first part of the opposition’s push for an early end to Nicolas Maduro’s term in office.

In a further twist, the Supreme Court suspended opposition activity in Venezuela’s parliament.Nicolas Maduro imposes visas for Americans

The court said activity would be frozen until three opposition members being investigated for vote-buying were removed.

The country is going through a political and economic crisis, which has led to shortages of basic goods and looting.

The inflation rate is one of the highest in the world and there are long queues outside shops.

The election council said Nicolas Maduro’s opponents had cleared the threshold of obtaining 200,000 valid signatures on a petition demanding that the president face a recall referendum.

The council did not set a date for the next stage of the lengthy recall process – when the opposition will need to collect four million signatures in just three days.

The opposition accuses Nicolas Maduro’s administration of mismanaging the economy.

He was elected in April 2013 and his term runs until 2019.

Correspondents say election council head Tibisay Lucena provided the president with a major fillip by stating that claims of widespread fraud in the opposition petition should be investigated.

Tibisay Lucena said the authorities had detected more than 1,000 apparently falsified signatures.

“The electoral authority will ask the state prosecutor’s office to investigate,” she said.

However, Tibisay Lucena made clear that 98% out of about 408,000 signatures gathered by the opposition Democratic Unity (MUD) coalition – twice the minimum required in the initial phase – had been validated.

The government made clear that it was determined not to allow a referendum this year.

It has initiated nearly 9,000 lawsuits around the country in an effort to try to halt the referendum push.

Correspondents say timing is vital because if President Nicolas Maduro loses a referendum this year – as polls suggest he will – a new presidential vote will be triggered, giving the opposition a chance to end 17 years of socialist rule.

If the president loses a referendum in 2017, he would be replaced by his vice-president, effectively ensuring the socialist party remains in power until the next presidential election scheduled for 2018.

Opposition leaders want Tibisay Lucena immediately to announce a date for the collection of 20% of signatures in order to trigger a referendum as soon as possible.

How Does Tech Keep Us Safe On The Roads?

One of the primary concerns for anyone who uses the roads regularly is safety. We all know how potentially dangerous driving can be. That’s why most of us are glad of any new innovations which are likely to make our journeys safer. The good news is that there are plenty of technology uses which do exactly that. Every year, more and more safety designs are manufactured. Each starts as just a trial run, of course. But in time, they all soon become a regular part of the majority of new cars. In this post, we will be looking at some of the most effective pieces of safety technology in the world of motoring. Let’s take a look at the things which keep us safe, every day.

File:Mobiles Navigationsgeraet Navigon im Einsatz.JPG

SatNav Updates

These days, it is becoming more and more common for cars to have SatNav installed in them automatically. There is no doubt that SatNav is a useful and important tool. However, it does have its downsides, as with any technology. The main downside in this case is that the SatNav often leads you astray thanks to its out-of-date maps. However, there is a simple way around this, and it is becoming increasingly popular. Now, you can get SatNavs which update themselves automatically. This means that every time you turn them on, you can be sure that the map you are using is as accurate as possible. This then stops you from being led astray, which is a huge safety concern for many. Having a completely updated SatNav means that you can get exactly where you want to go, when you want to go there.

Swab Tests

But it’s not all about the technology which is in our own personal vehicles. There are other sides to the argument too. Part of the whole process of keeping the public safe on the roads is ensuring that the law enforcers have the latest tech too. One important piece of technology for the police is the use of on-the-spot swab tests. This means that the police can now test drivers for a whole range of illicit substances. The major benefit here is fewer dangerous drivers on the road, of course. But it is also of benefit of law firms like Scheiner Law, who can use a clean swab test as evidence of innocence.

Collision Avoidance Systems

Possibly the main safety concern for the majority of motorists is the risk of collision. This is exactly what most drivers fear most of all. Anything which helps you to avoid having collisions is bound to be a good thing. That’s where the collision advance systems come in. This is a whole range of different tech which helps you to avoid crashing into anything else. You can get backup cameras to help you reverse, for example. There are also forward-collision detection systems, which warn you audibly of anything coming close to you. These systems are soon bound to be standard in all makes and models. Let’s hope that that means far fewer accidents on the road in future.

Queen Anne of Romania Dies Aged 92

Queen Anne of Romania has died in Switzerland at the age of 92, Romania’s royal house has announced.

Anne was born in Paris, as the only daughter of Prince René of Bourbon-Parma and Princess Margaret of Denmark. With her three brothers, Anne spent her childhood in France. In 1939 her family fled from the Nazi Germans and escaped to Spain. From there they went on to Portugal and then to the United States.

In November 1947, Anne met King Michael I of Romania who was visiting London for the Wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten.

The wedding ceremony was held on June 10, 1948, in Athens, Greece, in the throne room of the Royal Palace.

Russian Mi-8 Chopper Shot Down by Syrian Rebels in Idlib

A Russian military helicopter has been shot down by rebels in Idlib, northern Syria, killing five people on board, Russia has said.

The Mi-8 chopper was carrying three crew and two officers, Russia’s defense ministry said in a statement.

The aircraft was returning from delivering humanitarian aid to the besieged city of Aleppo, the statement added.

It is not clear which group brought the helicopter down.

An alliance of rebel groups, including hardline jihadist factions, is the dominant power in Idlib.

Russia has previously, though seldom, lost aircraft since it launched operations in support of the Syrian government at the end of September 2015.

In July 2016, two Russian pilots were killed when their helicopter was shot down east of Palmyra by ISIS.

In November 2015, the pilot of a Russian Su-24 fighter plane was killed when the aircraft was shot down by Turkey on its border with Syria.

A Russian marine sent on a mission to rescue the pilot was also killed when his helicopter was shot down.

Pictures on social media purportedly of the latest Russian helicopter downing showed burning wreckage and bodies, with armed men milling around.

Footage showed at least one body being dragged away.

Russia is a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and is supporting pro-government forces with air strikes on rebels.

Government forces cut off rebel-held eastern parts of Aleppo last month.

Russia and Syria announced the opening of what they called humanitarian corridors for civilians and rebels wanting to surrender, but few people are reported to have used them, fearing they would be targeted.

Nigerian Scammer Arrested in Port Harcourt

A 40-year-old Nigerian behind thousands of online scams around the world has been detained in Port Harcourt, Interpol announces.

The man, known as “Mike”, is alleged to head a network of 40 individuals behind global scams worth more than $60 million.

Mike’s operations involve using targeted malware to take over systems, use compromised emails and romance scams.

Nigeria’s anti-fraud agency was also involved in the arrest.

Interpol said in a statement: “In one case, a target was conned into paying out $15.4 million.”

The suspect also allegedly ran a money laundering network in China, Europe and the US.

“The network compromised email accounts of small to medium businesses around the world including in Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Romania, South Africa, Thailand and the United States,” Interpol statement added.

“Mike” and an accomplice, who was also arrested in Port Harcourt, face charges including hacking, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.

According to Interpol statement, they are currently out on bail as investigations continue.

Uber China to Merge With Didi Chuxing

Uber China has agreed to sell its business to rival Didi Chuxing.

The cab service app’s China business will retain its separate branding, and Uber’s global business will receive a 5.9% stake in the combined company, Didi Chuxing said.

Uber China launched in 2014 but so far has failed to make any profit.

The two companies have been fierce competitors for years, but Didi Chuxing dominates the market.

Didi Chuxing says it provides more than 14 million journeys a day and claims to have 87% of the market share in China.Uber Didi Chuxing merger

The company is backed by Chinese internet giants Tencent and Alibaba, and has also invested in Uber’s rival US cab service Lyft.

Uber has been struggling to break into the Chinese market despite having Chinese search engine Baidu as an investor.

In February, Uber admitted it was losing more than $1 billion a year in China, spending huge sums to subsidize discounted fares.

The fierce rivalry had led Uber and Didi to heavily subsidize their journeys. The merger is likely to see fewer such subsidies.

The deal with Didi Chuxing comes just days after China agreed to provide a legal framework for taxi-ordering apps.

Both Uber and Didi have welcomed the decision, having previously operated in a legal grey area in China.

While the apps are widely popular, they have undermined business for normal taxis and have been met with protests by cab drivers.

The new rules will take effect on November 1, 2016, and will, among other things, forbid such platforms to operate below cost.

Humayun Khan’s Mother Hits Back at Donald Trump

Captain Humayun Khan’s mother has hit back at Donald Trump for questioning her silence during a speech by her husband at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Ghazala Khan said Republican nominee Donald Trump was ignorant about Islam and that he did not know the meaning of the word sacrifice.

Her husband, Khizr Khan, attacked Donald Trump in an emotional speech to the Democratic convention on July 28.

Donald Trump later suggested Ghazala Khan may not have been allowed to speak.

Captain Humayun Khan was killed by a car bomb in 2004 in Iraq at the age of 27.

In an opinion article for the Washington Post, Ghazala Khan said her husband had asked her if she wanted to speak at the convention but she had been too upset.

Ghazala Khan wrote: “Walking on to the convention stage, with a huge picture of my son behind me, I could hardly control myself. What mother could? Donald Trump has children whom he loves. Does he really need to wonder why I did not speak?”

Photo LA Times
Photo LA Times

Humayun Khan’s mother added: “Donald Trump said he has made a lot of sacrifices. He doesn’t know what the word sacrifice means.”

On August 1, family members of eleven service-members killed in action wrote to Donald Trump, expressing dismay at his treatment of the family of Humayun Khan, and demanding an apology.

Their letter said: “When you question a mother’s pain, by implying that her religion, not her grief, kept her from addressing an arena of people, you are attacking us. When you say your job building buildings is akin to our sacrifice, you are attacking our sacrifice.

“This goes beyond politics. It is about a sense of decency. That kind decency you mock as <<political correctness>>.”

Pakistani-born Khizr Khan said during his speech at the Democratic convention that his son would not even have been in America if it had been up to Donald Trump, who has called for a ban on Muslims entering the US.

Responding to the criticism, Donald Trump said in an interview with ABC’s This Week: “If you look at his wife, she was standing there.

“She had nothing to say… Maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”

Donald Trump also defended himself from Khizr Khan’s criticism.

“While I feel deeply for the loss of his son, Mr. Khan, who has never met me, has no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution, (which is false) and say many other inaccurate things,” he said.

Donald Trump’s remarks drew condemnation from both Democrats and Republicans.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton attacked Donald Trump’s treatment of the Khans during a campaign stop at a church in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Mr. Khan paid the ultimate sacrifice in his family, didn’t he?” she told the African American congregation.

“And what has he heard from Donald Trump? Nothing but insults, degrading comments about Muslims, a total misunderstanding of what made our country great – religious freedom, religious liberty,” Hillary Clinton said.

In statements released in the Republican camp, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan condemned any criticism of Muslim Americans who serve their country.

Mitch McConnell praised Capt. Humayun Khan as an “American hero”.

Both also rejected the idea of a Muslim travel ban, an idea proposed by Donald Trump earlier in the campaign.

Neither statement mentioned Donald Trump by name or criticized him.

However, Republican Ohio Governor John Kasich, a former rival to Donald Trump for the nomination, tweeted: “Shame on him. He has no decency, he has a dark heart.”

Turkey: Fugitive Coup Soldiers Captured Near Marmaris

All but one of the soldiers who are accused of trying to seize Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during last month’s failed coup have been captured.

Special forces arrested another 11 soldiers overnight after a two-week manhunt near Marmaris.

President Erdogan was on holiday at the south-western resort on the night of the coup, but fled before his hotel was raided.

Special forces located the fugitives in a forested area, reports say.

Since the failed putsch Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cracked down on those suspected of being linked to the coup.

Tens of thousands of people have been detained or dismissed or suspended from roles in the military, judiciary, civil service and education.Erdogan insult contest

Over the weekend the president announced a sweeping reform of Turkey’s armed forces to bring them under full civilian control.

Turkish authorities accuse US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen of being behind the coup attempt, something he denies.

The rebel soldiers were spotted by villagers hunting boar in the forested area near Marmaris. Gunfire was exchanged during the operation but no casualties were reported.

The soldiers arrested in total last night include Major Sukru Seymen, the alleged commander, according to Anadolu news agency.

More than 20 other members of the military squad suspected of involvement had already been remanded in custody to face trial, the agency reports.

During the attempted coup on July 15 Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke live on TV via his mobile phone. He said he had narrowly escaped an attempt on his life.

According to official reports, the president’s security team was tipped off that a squad of soldiers was heading to his hotel and moved him.

Meanwhile, Turkey has summoned Germany’s charge d’affaires to the foreign ministry in Ankara to explain why President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was prevented from addressing a rally in Cologne via a video-link on July 31.

At least 30,000 rallied in Cologne in support of the Turkish president.

The German authorities said such messages could stoke political tensions among the three million ethnic Turks living in Germany.

Kevin Roberts: Saatchi and Saatchi Chairman Put on Leave over Gender Comments

0

Saatchi and Saatchi chairman Kevin Roberts has been put on leave for saying the debate on gender bias in the industry is “all over”.

He told Business Insider he did not think the lack of women in leadership roles “is a problem” in the advertising industry.

However, Maurice Levy, the head of the advertising company’s parent group, Publicis, said it would not tolerate anyone who did not value inclusion.

Publicis said its board would decide whether to take further action.

In the interview, published on July 29, Kevin Roberts said the “debate is all over” about gender diversity in the advertising industry.

He goes on to say that rather than holding ambitions to progress into the higher echelons of management, many women – and men – simply want to be happy and “do great work”.

Kevin Roberts adds: “…they are going: <<Actually guys, you’re missing the point, you don’t understand: I’m way happier than you.>> Their ambition is not a vertical ambition, it’s this intrinsic, circular ambition to be happy.

“So they say: <<We are not judging ourselves by those standards that you idiotic dinosaur-like men judge yourself by.>> I don’t think [the lack of women in leadership roles] is a problem.

“I’m just not worried about it because they are very happy, they’re very successful, and doing great work. I can’t talk about s**ual discrimination because we’ve never had that problem, thank goodness.”

Publicis CEO Maurice Levy said: “It is for the gravity of these statements that Kevin Roberts has been asked to take a leave of absence from Publicis Groupe effective immediately.

“As a member of The Directoire, it will ultimately be the Publicis Groupe Supervisory Board’s duty to further evaluate his standing.”

Maurice Levy added: “While fostering a work environment that is inclusive of all talent is a collective responsibility, it is leadership’s job to nurture the career aspirations and goals of all our talent.

“Promoting gender equality starts at the top and the Groupe will not tolerate anyone speaking for our organization who does not value the importance of inclusion.”

Donald Trump Responds to Khizr Khan’s Criticism

Donald Trump has responded to criticism from the father of Captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq.

In an impassioned speech at this week’s Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan said Donald Trump had sacrificed “nothing and no-one” for his country.

The Republican nominee said he had made “a lot of sacrifices” by creating jobs.

However, he drew more controversy by mocking Khizr Khan’s wife, who had stood silently by her husband’s side as he spoke.

In an interview with ABC’s This Week, Donald Trump said: “If you look at his wife, she was standing there.

“She had nothing to say… Maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”

Ghazala Khan said on July 29 that she did not speak because she was still overcome with grief and could not look at her son’s photos without crying.

Quoted by AP, Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Kaine said Donald Trump’s remarks were inappropriate: “He was kind of trying to turn that into some kind of ridicule.

“It just demonstrates again kind of a temperamental unfitness. If you don’t have any more sense of empathy than that, then I’m not sure you can learn it.”

Donald Trump’s campaign issued a statement on July 30 in which he praised Humayun Khan: “Captain Humayun Khan was a hero to our country and we should honor all who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe.

“The real problem here are the radical Islamic terrorists who killed him, and the efforts of these radicals to enter our country to do us further harm.”

Donald Trump rejected Khizr Khan’s criticism.

“While I feel deeply for the loss of his son, Mr. Khan, who has never met me, has no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution, (which is false) and say many other inaccurate things,” he said.

In the ABC interview to be broadcast on July 31, a transcript of which was released by the Trump campaign, the New York billionaire was asked what sacrifices he had made.

“I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures,” Donald Trump said.

“…I’ve had tremendous success. I think I’ve done a lot.”

Khizr Khan, 65, told a rapturous crowd on July 28, the final day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, that his son had sacrificed his life to save those of his fellow soldiers.

Captain Humayun Khan was killed by a car bomb in 2004 at the age of 27.

If it had been up to Donald Trump, Khizr Khan said, his son would not have been in America.

Khizr Khan asked if Donald Trump had “even read the United States Constitution”, and offered to lend him his copy.

Luke Aikins Becomes First Skydiver to Jump from 25,000 Ft Without Parachute

Skydiver Luke Aikins has become the first person to jump from 25,000 ft (7,620m) without a parachute, landing safely in a net.

On July 30, the 42-year-old American – who has more than 18,000 jumps under his belt – fell dead centre into the 100x100ft net in Simi Valley, southern California.

During the two-minute fall aired live on Fox television, Luke Aikins reached the speed of 120mph (193km/h).Luke Aikins jump without parachute

To loud cheers, Luke Aikins climbed out of the net and hugged his wife and young son.

“I’m almost levitating, it’s incredible,” he said after the jump.

“This thing just happened! I can’t even get the words out of my mouth,” said Luke Aikins, admitting that he was nervous beforehand.

Luke Aikins also admitted that he had nearly had to cancel the jump because he was ordered to wear a parachute for safety and this would have made his landing more dangerous because of the extra weight.

However, the organizers had lifted the ban just minutes before the jump.

His spokesman Justin Aclin said: “Aikins’ leap represents the culmination of a 26-year career that will set a personal and world record for the highest jump without a parachute or wing suit.”

Luke Aikins, who is a safety and training adviser for the US Parachute Association, said his friend came up with the idea two years ago.

Turkey: Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Put Spy Agency and Military Chief of Staff under His Control

0

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced he will put the spy agency and the military chief of staff under his own control.

He also said he wants to close the nation’s military academies.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the proposals would be brought before parliament.

The new measures are the latest in a large-scale crackdown launched after the failed coup on July 15.

Turkish authorities say US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen was behind the army-led coup in which at least 246 people died. He denies the allegation.

President Recep Erdogan told Turkey’s A Haber television on July 30: “We are going to introduce a small constitutional package which, if approved, will bring the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and chief of staff under the control of the presidency.”

“Military schools will be shut down… we will establish a national defense university,” he added.

President Erdogan said that the size of the gendarmerie would be cut, but its weaponry would be increased.

The president needs a two-thirds majority for the proposals to be adopted and therefore will have to secure support from opposition parties.

Turkey announced a military reshuffle on July 28, including the dishonorable discharge of 1,700 military servicemen. About 40% of generals and admirals have been discharged since the coup.

More than 66,000 public sector workers have been dismissed from their posts and 50,000 passports cancelled, while the labor ministry is investigating 1,300 of its staff.

The government has shut 142 media outlets and detained several journalists.

A three-month state of emergency has also been declared across Turkey.

Zika Outbreak: First Cases Contracted Within US Identified in Florida

0

The first Zika cases contracted within the US has been reported after four people were diagnosed with the virus in Florida, health officials say.

So far, cases outside of Latin America and the Caribbean, where the Zika virus is prevalent, have been spread by travel to that region or sexual transmission.

The four Florida cases mean US mosquitoes may be carrying the Zika virus.

Zika causes only a mild illness in most people but the virus has been linked to severe brain defects in newborns.

The Florida department of health said “a high likelihood exists that four cases are the result of local transmission”, centered on one small area just north of downtown Miami.

More than 1,650 cases of Zika have so far been detected in the United States, but the Florida cases would be the first in the US not involving foreign travel.

Two of those suffering from the virus are in Miami-Dade county and the other two in neighboring Broward county. They are the most densely populated counties in Florida.

Governor Rick Scott said the cases involved three men and a woman, and that none had been hospitalized.

To confirm whether Zika is being carried by mosquitoes locally, scientists are surveying houses and people within a 150-yard radius of the cases, the flying distance of the insect.

In February, the WHO declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency because of the risk to newborn children.

In severe cases, children can die and babies who survive can face intellectual disability and developmental delays.

Gov. Rick Scott asked all residents of affected areas to get rid of standing water, where mosquitoes thrive, and for residents to wear insect repellent.

Hillary Clinton Campaign Network Hacked

According to new reports, Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign has been hacked as part of a larger cyber attack against Democratic Party institutions.

The latest hack follows two data breaches involving the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

US authorities widely believe that the cyber attacks were committed by agents working for the Russian government.

Some fear that Russia may be trying to influence the presidential election.

However, Russia has denied involvement and denounced the “poisonous anti-Russian” rhetoric coming out of Washington.

According to Hillary Clinton’s campaign, an analytics data program, which it shared with other entities, had been accessed by hackers.

However, there was “no evidence that our internal systems have been compromised”, Hillary Clinton’s press secretary Nick Merrill said on July 29.

The FBI said it was investigating the allegations and the extent of any hacking.

The DNC hacked emails were leaked last week on the eve of the party’s convention in Philadelphia.

The emails showed Democratic Party officials were biased against Bernie Sanders in his primary race against Hillary Clinton.

The hack led to the resignation of the party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and sparked protests at the convention.

In addition to the attack on the Clinton campaign, the DCCC was also found to have been compromised.

The DCCC works to raise money for Democratic congressional candidates.

According to a statement issued by the DCCC on July 29, they have hired cyber security company CrowdStrike to help with the investigation.

Hackers may have been able to access the Democrats’ political strategy documents as well as opposition research conducted against Republican candidates.

“We have taken and are continuing to take steps to enhance the security of our network,” the DCCC said.

“We are cooperating with federal law enforcement with respect to their ongoing investigation.”

Turkey Coup Attempt: Recep Tayyip Erdogan Withdraws Insult Lawsuits

0

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced he is withdrawing all lawsuits against people charged with insulting him.

He said he was inspired by the feelings of unity in the wake of the recent failed coup.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan also stepped up his attacks on nations criticizing his crackdown in the wake of the coup attempt, telling them to “mind your own business”.

The president earlier blasted General Joseph Votel, head of US Central Command, saying he was “on the side of the coup plotters”.

Gen. Joseph Votel had said in remarks on July 28 that the jailing of some military leaders could damage Turkish-American military co-operation.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the presidential palace: “I am going to withdraw all the cases regarding the disrespectful insults made against me.”

He said it was a one-off gesture of goodwill.President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Turkey elections 2015

Earlier this year, Turkish authorities said some 2,000 people were facing such prosecutions.

Recep Erdogan was also defiant in the face of criticism over his crackdown, which the interior ministry said on July 29 had seen 18,000 detentions.

He said: “Some people give us advice. They say they are worried. Mind your own business! Look at your own deeds.

“Not a single person has come to give condolences either from the European Union… or from the West… Those countries or leaders who are not worried about Turkey’s democracy, the lives of our people, its future – while being so worried about the fate of the putschists – cannot be our friends.”

Speaking at the same event, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Turkey had now succeeded in removing all elements linked to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen from the military.

Turkey blames Fethullah Gulen for orchestrating the coup attempt, something he denies.

On July 29, President Recep Erdogan had told Gen. Joseph Votel to “know your place”, adding: “You are taking the side of coup plotters instead of thanking this state for defeating the coup attempt.”

Gen. Joseph Votel had said one day before: “We have certainly had relationships with a lot of Turkish leaders – military leaders in particular. I am concerned about what the impact is on those relationships as we continue.”

The next day, replying after President Recep Erdogan’s comments, Gen. Joseph Votel said any reports that he was involved in the coup were “unfortunate and completely inaccurate”.

Gen. Joseph Votel added that Turkey had been an “extraordinary and vital partner” for many years and he was looking forward to their partnership in the fight against self-styled Islamic State.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper had also said on July 28 that Turkey’s crackdown was disrupting Turkish-American military co-operation in fighting ISIS.

Turkey announced a military reshuffle on July 28, including the dishonorable discharge of 1,700 military servicemen. About 40% of generals and admirals have been discharged since the coup.

More than 66,000 Turkish public sector workers have been dismissed from their posts and 50,000 passports cancelled, while the labor ministry is investigating 1,300 of its staff.

Petrobras Scandal: Brazil’s Ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to Go on Trial

Brazil’s ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is to go on trial for obstruction of justice in a case related to the scandal at state oil company Petrobras, court documents show.

The Petrobras affair has already seen dozens of politicians and officials arrested.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, with six others, is accused of hampering Operation Car Wash, the investigation into the scandal.

He has denied any wrongdoing.Dilma Rousseff and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

The date for the trial has not yet been set.

Those also charged on July 29 include former senator Delcidio Amaral and investment banker Andre Esteves.

They have been accused of trying to prevent former Petrobras director Nestor Cervero from testifying in a plea bargain deal.

Nestor Cervero was jailed for being the mastermind of the Petrobras scandal.

It is understood that the accusation against Lula is a result of a plea bargain testimony by Delcidio Amaral.

In May, Brazil’s Attorney General Rodrigo Janot accused Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of playing a key role in the Petrobras case, which is estimated to have cost the company more than $2 billion.

Rodrigo Janot said the corruption could not have taken place without the former president’s participation.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made a comeback to frontline Brazilian politics in March, when President Dilma Rousseff nominated him as her chief of staff.

A judge then suspended Lula’s nomination saying it had been aimed at protecting him from possible prosecution.

Operation Car Wash was launched two years ago by prosecutors focusing initially on money laundering.

They say that their investigations have since uncovered a complex corruption scheme at Petrobras.

Brazilian prosecutors allege the scandal was used to finance the electoral campaigns of senior politicians.

Several politicians and Petrobras executives have been arrested and sentenced.

Some of them have agreed to testify against other suspects in exchange for more lenient sentences, taking the investigation to a new level.
