According to Labor Department data, US companies added 128,000 new jobs,
ahead of a forecast 85,000 rise, during October, when thousands of workers walked
out at General Motors.
Last month’s employment was more resilient than
expected despite the impact of strike action at the auto maker.
The unemployment rate edged up slightly to 3.6% from 3.5% in September,
which had been the lowest rate since 1969.
According to analysts, the data supported the Federal Reserve’s comments
earlier this week that the economy is in good shape.
President Donald Trump immediately praised “blowout” jobs data,
stating that adjusted employment figures showed growth of 303,000 roles.
However, this includes upgrades to figures from previous months and other
adjustments.
He tweeted: “Wow, a
blowout JOBS number just out, adjusted for revisions and the General Motors
strike, 303,000. This is far greater than expectations. USA ROCKS!”
The jobs data for August and September was revised upwards. In August, 51,000
more roles than originally thought were added to the US economy and 44,000 more
jobs were created in September.
The data from the Labor Department showed that the manufacturing sector shed
36,000 positions last month, the biggest fall for a decade.
However, within manufacturing, employment in the motor vehicles and parts
sector declined by 42,000 because of the strike at GM. Striking employees are
treated as unemployed in the US statistics.
The White House said that 60,000 jobs were affected by the GM strikes.
Public sector payrolls fell in October because 20,000 temporary workers who
had been preparing for the 2020 Census completed their work.
On October 30, the Federal Reserve cut the key interest rate, but signaled that there would not be further reductions in the near term.

President Trump has never released
his tax returns and refuses to disclose personal tax information.
Donald Trump has owned the
Mar-a-Lago resort since 1985 and travels frequently between there and the White

The president said he would always cherish New York but added: “Unfortunately, despite the fact that I
pay millions of dollars in city, state and local taxes each year, I have been

The New York Times reported that
President Trump and his wife Melania filed for residency in Florida in
September, the New York Times reported.

“other places of abode” are listed as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (the
White House) and his private golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
An apartment in Trump Tower, Manhattan, has been Donald Trump’s

Pentagon has published the first footage of the raid in northern Syria in
which Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State (ISIS) group was
killed.
The video showed troops firing at militants on the ground as they flew
towards the compound where Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was hiding before they moved in
on the ground.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi fled into a tunnel and killed himself by detonating a
suicide vest.
After the raid the compound was destroyed with munitions.
General Kenneth McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, said the destroyed
buildings were left looking like “a parking lot with large potholes”.
He said two children had died with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in the tunnel – not
three as previously reported.
Gen. Kenneth McKenzie also could not confirm President Donald Trump’s
graphic description of Baghdadi whimpering and crying as he died.
“He crawled into a hole with two
small children and blew himself up while his people stayed on the ground. You
can deduce what kind of person it is based on that activity,” he told
a news conference at the Pentagon.
“That would be my empirical
observation of what he did. I’m not able to confirm anything else about his
last seconds. I just can’t confirm that one way or another.”
He said four women – who were wearing suicide vests – and one man were
killed at the compound.
Gen McKenzie said an unknown number of fighters also died after opening fire
on US helicopters.
He added: “I want to make it
clear that despite the high-pressure and high-profile nature of this assault
that every effort was made to avoid civilian casualties and to protect children
we suspected would be in the compound.”
He confirmed that Baghdadi had been identified through his DNA – adding that
samples had been on file since the ISIS leader’s detention in an Iraqi prison
in 2004.
Gen McKenzie said Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s remains were flown back to a staging base for identification and were then buried at sea within 24 hours of his death “in accordance with the laws of armed conflict”.

A resolution setting out the next steps in President Donald Trump’s impeachment have been published by House Democrats.
The motion sets out a more public phase of the inquiry and hands the lead
role in hearings to the chairman of the intelligence committee, Adam Schiff.

A White House spokeswoman said the resolution was an “illegitimate
sham”.

unsubstantiated corruption claims against his political rival, Joe Biden, and

The president denies wrongdoing and calls the impeachment inquiry a

On October 29, the impeachment inquiry heard from Lt. Col. Alexander
Vindman, a White House official who had monitored a phone call on July 25
between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
That call sparked a whistleblower complaint and led to the impeachment
probe.
Col. Alexander Vindman said he was “concerned” by the call as he
“did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government
investigate a US citizen”.
The eight-page document sets out a two-stage process for the next phase of
the inquiry.
In the first, the House Intelligence Committee will continue its investigations
and hold public hearings. It will have the right to make public transcripts of
depositions taken in private.
In the second phase, a public report
on the findings will be sent to the House Judiciary Committee which will
conduct its own proceedings and report on “such resolutions, articles of
impeachment, or other recommendations as it deems proper”.
President Trump’s lawyers will be
allowed to take part in the Judiciary Committee stage.
Republicans on the committees will
be able to subpoena documents or witnesses – although they could still be
blocked as both committees are Democrat-controlled.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said
a House vote on the resolution would take place on October 31. She has
previously said such a vote is not required under the US Constitution.
House Republican leader Kevin
McCarthy, speaking before the resolution was unveiled, said the entire process
was a “sham.”
Referring to the closed-door meetings and depositions he said: “You can’t put the genie back in the bottle. Due process starts at the beginning.”
HBO has announced it ordered House of the Dragon, a prequel series to the hit fantasy TV show Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon
will be set about 300 years before events in the original series, which ended
its eight-season run earlier this year.
The cable channel’s announcement
came hours after another planned prequel, due to star Naomi Watts, was
reportedly canceled.
Game of Thrones
was HBO’s most popular series. The series won multiple Emmy awards and drew tens

“It’s my pleasure to announce today that we are
ordering House of the Dragon straight to series for HBO,” said Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming, at a launch
event in Los Angeles for the HBO Max streaming platform.
“It tells the story of House Targaryen and the early
days of Westeros.”
In a tweet, Games of Thrones said House of the Dragon would be co-produced by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin,
Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik: “#HouseOfTheDragon, a #GameofThrones prequel is coming to @HBO.
The series is co-created by @GRRMSpeaking and Ryan Condal. Miguel Sapochnik will
partner with Condal as showrunner and will direct the pilot and additional episodes.
Condal will be writing the series.”
A pilot episode for an unnamed prequel starring Oscar nominee Naomi Watts
was filmed over the summer.
On October 29, sources quoted by The
Hollywood Reporter said executive producer Jane Goldman had emailed the
cast telling them that HBO had canceled the show.

comment.

Alberto Fernández has been elected president of
Argentina in a vote dominated by economic concerns.
The center-left opposition candidate secured more than the 45% of the vote
needed to win, beating conservative incumbent Mauricio Macri.
Raucous crowds gathered at Alberto Fernández’s election headquarters to
celebrate the result.
The vote was held amid an economic crisis that has left a third of
Argentina’s population in poverty.
Mauricio Macri had trailed behind his challenger in pre-election polls and
was trounced by the opposition in primary elections in August.
The incumbent president conceded defeat on October 27. Congratulating his
political rival, Mauricio Macri said he had invited Alberto Fernández to the
presidential palace on October 28 to discuss an orderly transition.
Alberto Fernández later told supporters he would collaborate with the
outgoing president “in every way we can”, according to Reuters.
With more than 90% of ballots counted, Alberto Fernández had 47.79% of the
vote, compared to Mauricio Macri’s 40.71%.
To win in the first round, a candidate needs at least 45% of the vote, or
40% and a 10-point lead over the second-place contestant.
Alberto Fernández will assume the presidency on December 10.
The vote was dominated by concerns over the economy. With nearly one in
three people now living in poverty, voters backed the candidate they thought was
best-placed to lead Argentina out of the crisis.

precautionary blackout expected to be the largest in state history.
PG&E said the power cuts would
affect 940,000 households and businesses across 36 counties in northern
California – hitting an estimated two million people.
In a statement, PG&E warned
customers that they could be affected by a mass blackout, citing forecasts of
potential extreme weather.
The warning came as the gas and electricity
company faced scrutiny over its possible role in the fires.
The Kincade Fire in northern
California began seven minutes after a nearby power line was damaged, but
PG&E has not yet confirmed if the power glitch started the blaze.
PG&E is already seeking bankruptcy protection as it faces lawsuits over

Dublin.
Speaking after a magistrate granted Essex Police more time to question Mo
Robinson on October 24, Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills said her priority
was “preserving the dignity of the 39 people who have died and ensuring
that we get answers for their loved ones”.
The truck has been moved to a secure site at Tilbury Docks and police are
due to begin the process of moving the bodies to a mortuary at Broomfield
Hospital in Chelmsford.
They will be taken by private ambulance so that post-mortem examinations can
take place, with the force expecting all the bodies to have been moved by the
weekend.
Global Trailer Rentals Ltd confirmed to RTE News that it owned the trailer and
said it had leased it on October 15.
The company said it had given Essex Police the details of the person and
company they had leased it to.
Essex Police said it was the largest murder investigation in the force’s
history and the victims were all “believed to be Chinese nationals”.
It said formal identification of the 39 people, one of whom is a young adult
woman, “could be a lengthy process”.
China’s ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming tweeted that the embassy had read
the reports of the deaths “with heavy hearts” and was in close
contact with British police.
Police initially suggested the truck could be from Bulgaria, but later said
officers believed it entered the UK from Belgium.
A spokesman for the Bulgarian foreign affairs ministry said the truck was
registered in the country under the name of a company owned by an Irish
citizen.
The Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office said the container arrived in
Zeebrugge at 14:29 on October 22 and left the port later that afternoon.
It was not clear when the victims were placed in the container or if this happened in Belgium, a spokesman said.

UK’s PM Boris Johnson has said he will press on
“undaunted” with Brexit on October 31, despite losing a crunch
Commons vote.
He must now ask the EU for an extension to that deadline after the Prliament backed an amendment aimed at ruling out a no-deal Brexit, by 322 votes to 306.
Boris Johnson has told EU Council President Donald Tusk that he will now
send a letter seeking the delay.
Under the terms of the so-called Benn
Act, passed last month by UK lawmakers, he has until 23:00 local time on
October 18 to send it.
Having spoken to the prime minister at 19:15 local time, EU Council
President Donald Tusk tweeted that he was “waiting for the letter”.
An EU source said that once Donald Tusk received the letter, he would start
consulting EU leaders on how to react.

Boris Johnson has vowed to bring in legislation on October 21 to implement
the deal he struck with Brussels this week.
Lawmakers could also be given another vote on the deal then, if Commons
Speaker John Bercow allows it.
The Commons defeat is a major setback for the prime minister, who has
repeatedly insisted that the UK will leave at the end of the month come what
may.
PM Boris Johnson told the Commons he was not “daunted or dismayed”
by the defeat and remained committed to taking Britain out by the end of the
month on the basis of his “excellent deal”.
In a letter to lawmakers and peers on October 19, Boris Johnson warned the
EU could reject “Parliament’s request for further delay”.
He wrote: “It is quite possible
that our friends in the European Union will reject Parliament’s request for
further delay (or not take a decision quickly).”
The PM added that it was to his “great regret” that lawmakers had
voted for more delay, and that he “will not negotiate a delay”.
“I will tell the EU what I have
told the British public for my 88 days as prime minister: further delay is not
a solution,” he said.
Downing Street refused to offer any explanation as to why the prime minister
did not consider he was obliged to negotiate a fresh extension.
The EU said it was up to the UK to “inform it of the next steps”.
At a recent event, President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan said that Turkey will “crush the heads” of Kurdish fighters
if they do not withdraw from a planned safe zone area in northern Syria.
On October 17, Turkey agreed to suspend an offensive for five days to allow
the Kurds to retreat from the area.
However, on October 19, both sides accused the other of violating the
ceasefire.
Turkey views the Kurdish forces as terrorists and wants to create a
“safe zone” buffer inside Syria.
Despite the temporary ceasefire, some sporadic violence has continued –
particularly around the border town of Ras Al-Ain.
Speaking at an event in the central
Turkish province of Kayseri on October 19, President Erdogan said that if
Kurdish fighters did not withdraw by October 22 in the evening – as agreed in
the ceasefire – “we will start where we left off and continue to crush the
terrorists’ heads”.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due to hold
talks next week with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On October 19, he said that if those
talks did not produce a solution, Turkey would “implement its own
plans”.
Turkey’s defense ministry earlier
accused Kurdish forces of carrying out 14 “provocative” attacks in
the last 36 hours, mostly in Ras Al-Ain, but insisted Turkish forces were fully
abiding by the agreement.
But the Kurdish-led Syrian
Democratic Forces (SDF) accused Turkey of violating the ceasefire.
They also accuse Turkish troops of failing to create a safe corridor for the
evacuation of civilians and wounded people from the besieged town.
On October 19, the SDF urged US VP Mike Pence, who helped to broker the
temporary ceasefire, to pressure Turkey to allow the passage of civilians.
The SDF said in a statement: “Despite the constant communication with the American side and the promise made by them to solve this problem, there has not been any tangible progress in this regard.”

Kim Jong-un has climbed North Korea’s highest
mountain, Mount Paektu, on horseback, according to state media.
A series of photos released by KCNA show the North Korean leader astride a
white horse on a snow-covered mountain.
This is not the first time Kim Jong-un has scaled the 2,750-meter peak and
analysts say such gestures have been known to precede major announcements.
Mount Paektu holds a special place in North Korea’s identity and is feted as
the birthplace of Kim Jong-un’s father.
A KCNA report released on October 16 said: “His march on horseback in Mt Paektu is a great event of weighty
importance in the history of the Korean revolution.
“Sitting on the horseback atop Mt
Paektu, [he] recollected with deep emotion the road of arduous struggle he
covered for the great cause of building the most powerful country, with faith
and will as firm as Mt Paektu.”
In 2017, Kim Jong-un visited the mountain a few weeks before his New Year’s
address, where he hinted at a diplomatic thaw with South Korea.
The North Korean leader has reportedly climbed Mount Paektu at least three
times, and made a joint visit to the mountain with South Korean president Moon
Jae-in in 2018.
KCNA previously released photos of Kim Jong-un atop the mountain, after
apparently climbing it in black leather shoes.
Mount Paektu, an active volcano, is
said to be the birthplace of Dangun, the founder of the first Korean kingdom
more than 4,000 years ago.
The mountain is hundreds of kilometers
from the capital Pyongyang, and sits right on the border between North Korea
and China.
Earlier this month, North Korean officials held talks with US officials in Sweden, the first since President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un met briefly at the DMZ in June.
Thousands of protesters took the streets of Barcelona,
Girona and Tarragona in support of Catalonia’s independence from Spain for a
second day, leading to clashes with police.
Fires were started and protesters attempted to storm government offices in the
regional capital.
The protest was sparked by the sentencing on October 14 of nine Catalan
separatist leaders.
A spokesperson for Catalonia’s regional government, Meritxell Budó, said they

Protests were also reported in the
Catalan cities of Girona and Tarragona.
Pro-independence leaders – who
control the Catalan regional government – say they will keep pushing for a new
referendum on secession from Spain.

years by Spain’s Supreme Court on October 14.
The separatists were convicted of
sedition over their role in an independence referendum in 2017, which Spain
said was illegal.
Another three were found guilty of disobedience and fined, but not jailed.
All 12 defendants denied the charges.
Joan Tardà, the former deputy leader of a pro-Catalan independence party,
has called for peaceful protests.
He tweeted: “There is nothing
more lethal to independence than the combination between a violent minority
action on the street and an uncontrolled police force.”
On October 14, thousands of protesters blocked roads to Barcelona’s El Prat
airport – a major transport hub.
More than 100 flights were canceled as demonstrators fought running battles
with riot police at the terminal buildings.
Catalan nationalists have long complained that their region, which has a
distinct history dating back almost 1,000 years, sends too much money to poorer
parts of Spain, as taxes are controlled by Madrid.
The wealthy region in Spain’s north-east is home to about 7.5 million
people, with their own language, parliament, flag and anthem.
In September, a march in Barcelona in support of Catalonia’s independence from Spain drew crowds of about 600,000 people – one of the lowest turnouts in the eight-year history of the annual rally.
