Vladimir Putin orders Russian troops to withdraw from Ukraine border

President Vladimir Putin has ordered the withdrawal of the Russian troops from Ukraine’s border, the Kremlin says.

Units in the Rostov, Belgorod and Bryansk regions should return to their permanent bases, a statement said.

Russia has made a similar statements in the past, only for NATO to report no change.

Correspondents say the removal of some 40,000 Russian troops near the Ukrainian border could help de-escalate the Ukraine crisis.

The apparent build-up of Russian forces in the region has ratcheted up diplomatic tensions in recent weeks.

“In connection with the completion of the planned spring phase of military training… at ranges in Rostov, Belgorod and Bryansk regions, Putin ordered the defense minister to withdraw the troops that took part in the exercises,” the Kremlin statement provided to Russian news agencies said.

Tensions between Russia and the West rose after the overthrow of pro-Kremlin Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in February, following months of street protests.

Russia’s subsequent annexation of Crimea triggered a crisis in relations.

Meanwhile, clashes have taken place between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russia separatist militants in eastern Ukraine.

One Ukrainian soldier was killed and one was injured on Monday in attack by separatists on a checkpoint near Sloviansk, in the Donetsk region, Ukraine’s Interfax news agency quoted the country’s defense ministry as saying.

On Saturday, the separatists appointed a prime minister for what they call the People’s Republic of Donetsk.

The board of directors at both companies have approved the merger.

However, the deal is subject to approval by DirecTV shareholders, and needs to be reviewed by US regulators, including the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice.

Both companies are hopeful the transaction will complete in about 12 months.

AT&T chairman and chief executive Randall Stephenson said in a statement: “This is a unique opportunity that will redefine the video entertainment industry and create a company able to offer new bundles and deliver content to consumers across multiple screens – mobile devices, TVs, laptops, cars and even airplanes.”

DirecTV is a leading pay TV provider in the US and Latin America. Meanwhile AT&T is a telecommunications provider and it boasts of a nationwide mobile network and a high-speed broadband network, which the company says will cover 70 million customer locations, with the broadband expansion enabled by this transaction.

DirecTV’s premier content includes exclusive pay TV rights to NFL Sunday Ticket which gives subscribers access to every American football game played on Sunday afternoons, which they can view on TV, laptops and mobile devices.

Under the terms of the merger, DirecTV shareholders will receive $95 per share, comprising $28.50 per share in cash and $66.50 per share in AT&T stock.

AT&T intends to finance the cash portion of the transaction through a combination of cash on hand, sales of assets and loans.

His son, David Brabham, confirmed that he had died at his home on Australia’s Gold Coast after a long battle with liver disease.

“He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of,” said David Brabham.

“He will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind.”

Jack Brabham began racing in Australia in 1948 after serving in the Royal Australian Air Force as a mechanic.

After a number of successful years racing in New Zealand and Australia, he came to the UK and made his Grand Prix debut in 1955.

Jack Brabham’s Grand Prix wins ranged from his first in Monaco in 1959 to his last in South Africa in 1970, the year he retired from the sport.

His world championship win in 1966 was achieved in a car of his own construction, the rear-engined BT19.

He remains the only man in history to have designed, built and driven a championship-winning car.

Jack Brabham raced on into his 40s, recording his last of his 14 F1 victories at the age of 43 in the 1970 South African Grand Prix.

After his retirement, he sold his team to Bernie Ecclestone – who would go on to run the sport – with the Brabham name remaining in the sport until the 1990s.

Jack Brabham was knighted for services to motor sport in 1979. He is survived by his wife, Lady Margaret, and sons Geoff, Gary and David and their families.

AstraZeneca rejects Pfizer’s final takeover offer

0

AstraZeneca has rejected an improved “final” takeover offer from Pfizer.

US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer had made a new offer of £55 ($88) per share, valuing AstraZeneca at about £69 billion ($105 billion).

However, AstraZeneca says the new proposal “undervalues the company and its attractive prospects”.

Pfizer’s pursuit has been under scrutiny because of fears it would hamper AstraZeneca’s drug research and cut jobs.

Pfizer had made a new offer of £55 per share, valuing AstraZeneca at about £69 billion

Pfizer planned to create the world’s largest drug company, with its headquarters in New York, but based in the UK for tax purposes.

In a strategy known as “tax inversion” Pfizer could pay the UK corporate tax rate of 20%, rather than the 35% rate applied in the US, if it bought AstraZeneca.

That plan has proved controversial with unions and politicians, with AstraZeneca employing 6,700 people in the UK.

AstraZeneca chairman Leif Johansson said Pfizer’s pursuit had been “fundamentally driven” by the corporate financial benefits.

“Pfizer has failed to make a compelling strategic, business or value case,” he added.

Of the two companies’ research and development workforce, Pfizer has said it will retain at least 20% in the UK for at least five years. It has also pledged to base its European HQ in Britain.

AstraZeneca’s shares fell over 13% in early trading after its rejection of the offer.

In its new offer statement, Pfizer chief executive Ian Read said: “We stand by our unprecedented commitments to the UK government.”

Pfizer had said that its improved offer of £55 per share was “final” and would not be increased.

AstraZeneca shareholders were being offered £24.76 in cash and 1.747 shares in the new firm – worth a combined £55 – for each share currently they hold.

Pfizer had also promised not to mount a hostile takeover – a direct approach to shareholders of AstraZeneca without the involvement of its board.

Leif Johansson said that he had made clear to Pfizer that his board could only recommend a bid that was at least 10% above an offer of £53.50 made by Pfizer on Friday.

Soma mine: Three people facing charges of multiple deaths

Three people are facing a charge of causing multiple deaths in Soma mine disaster, Turkish officials say.

They were among 25 people detained on Sunday, including several mining company officials.

Soma mine explosion and fire on Tuesday sent carbon monoxide gas into the mine’s tunnels, claiming 301 lives.

It was Turkey’s worst-ever mining disaster and sparked protests against the government and mine operators.

The three facing charges are also accused of negligence, AP news agency reports.

Public prosecutor Bekir Sahiner said that one of the 25 arrested was the mine’s operations manager.

The manager, Akin Celik, has previously denied any negligence.

Turkey’s Dogan news agency has also said general manager Ramazan Dogru was among those arrested.

It is not yet clear if either of the men faces charges.

Six of those arrested on Sunday have now been released, the prosecutor said.

Initial reports suggest that the disaster could have been caused by coal in the mine overheating.

Swiss voters reject world’s highest minimum wage proposal

Voters in Switzerland have rejected a proposal to introduce what would have been the highest minimum wage in the world in a referendum.

Under the plan, employers would have had to pay workers a minimum 22 Swiss francs (about $25 or 18 euros) an hour.

The minimum wage proposal was rejected by 76 percent of Swiss voters

Supporters said the move was necessary for people to live a decent life.

But critics argued that it would raise production costs and increase unemployment.

The minimum wage proposal was rejected by 76% of voters. Supporters had argued it would “protect equitable pay” but the Swiss Business Federation said it would harm low-paid workers in particular.

The issue was the most prominent of several referendums held on Sunday.

A controversial plan to buy 22 Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets for the Swiss Air Force was narrowly rejected by 53% of voters.

It was the trade union-backed proposal to ensure that an annual salary was not less than $53,600 a year that provoked the most debate.

Balkan floods threaten Serbia’s main power plant

Serbia’s main power plant is being threatened by the worst floods in the Balkans for decades, officials say.

The River Sava has burst its banks in many areas and water levels are expected to peak later on Sunday.

At least 20 people have died in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina after a month’s worth of rain fell in three days, and the death toll is expected to rise.

In Bosnia, landslides have buried houses and disturbed landmines laid during the war in the 1990s.

The floods are also affecting Croatia.

In Serbia, thousands of residents in Obrenovac were moved to safety after much of the town was inundated.

The town, south-west of the capital Belgrade, is home to the Nikola Tesla power plant, which supplies much of the country.

Serbian PM Aleksandar Vucic said that his government’s primary concern was to protect the power plant.

“We are doing all we can,” he said.

Thousands of volunteers have responded to the government’s appeal to build up flood defenses along the Sava.

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic also appealed for help.

“Support for everyone! Let’s help those in danger! Join the aid action!” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Officials have refused to give a death toll for Obrenovac until the floodwaters recede.

Almost one-third of Bosnia is under water. The north-east is worst affected, with houses, roads and railway lines submerged.

Bosnian Serb police chief Gojko Vasic said the situation had been particularly difficult in Doboj “because the flood waters acted as a tsunami, three to four metres high”, the Reuters news agency reported.

Bosnian Security Ministry spokesman Admir Malagic said that about one million people – more than a quarter of the country’s population – live in the affected area.

Chairman of the Bosnian three-man presidency Bakir Izetbegovic said that his country is facing a “horrible catastrophe”, the Associated Press reported.

China sends ships to evacuate workers from Vietnam

China is sending five ships to evacuate its workers from Vietnam following a wave of anti-Chinese riots.

The Chinese government has already evacuated more than 3,000 people, Chinese state-run media report.

The first ship set sail on Sunday, while 16 critically injured Chinese nationals left Vietnam on a chartered flight, Xinhua news agency said.

Two Chinese workers have been killed and dozens more injured in unrest over a Chinese oil rig in disputed waters.

On Saturday the Vietnamese government called for an end to the protests.

Officials said “illegal acts” would be stopped as they could damage national stability.

However, dissident groups have urged people to rally again in major cities on Sunday and the authorities broke up some anti-China protests in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In recent days crowds have set fire to at least 15 foreign-owned factories – including Chinese, Taiwanese and South Korean businesses – in several Vietnamese industrial parks.

Correspondents say the attacks appear to have worried authorities, as Hanoi depends heavily on foreign investment for economic growth.

However, China has urged authorities to take tougher measures to punish rioters.

“We are strongly dissatisfied by the Vietnamese side failure to respond effectively to curb an escalation,” Xinhua quoted security chief Guo Shengkun as saying on Saturday.

The protests have been triggered by China’s decision to move its Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig into contested waters in the South China Sea.

This led to confrontations between Vietnamese and Chinese ships earlier this month, as Vietnam sought to block the move.

China insists it will continue drilling in the area, west of the Paracel Islands – which are controlled by China but also claimed by Vietnam, and Taiwan.

Nationalist sentiment is currently running very high in Vietnam over the issue, correspondents say.

Swiss referendum on world’s highest minimum wage

Switzerland is voting in a referendum on whether to introduce what would be the highest minimum wage in the world.

If approved, employers would have to pay workers a minimum 22 Swiss francs (about $25 or 18 euros) an hour.

Supporters say the move is necessary for people to live a decent life.

But critics argue that it would raise production costs and increase unemployment because young people would find it more difficult to get work.

Correspondents say that the proposal “to protect equitable pay” is the most prominent of several referendums on Sunday.

Switzerland is voting in a referendum on whether to introduce what would be the highest minimum wage in the world

They include a controversial plan to buy Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets for the Swiss Air Force and to impose a lifelong ban against convicted paedophiles working with children.

But it is a trade union-backed proposal to ensure that an annual salary is not less than $53,600 a year which has provoked the most debate.

They argue that the measure is necessary because of the high living costs in big Swiss cities such as Geneva and Zurich.

The unions are angry that Switzerland – one of the richest countries in the world – does not have a minimum pay level while neighboring France and Germany do.

They argue that surviving on less than 4,000 francs a month is not possible because rents, health insurance and food are all prohibitively expensive.

The minimum wage in Germany will be 8.5 euros an hour from 2017.

A key element of the campaign in favor of a minimum wage is the argument that the Swiss welfare system is being forced to subsidize businesses which refuse to pay a living wage.

But business leaders and the government say that low unemployment and high standards of living for the majority show that there is no need for change.

Small businesses, in particular Swiss farmers, are especially worried that being forced to pay their staff 4,000 francs a month would price their products out of the market.

Most of Switzerland’s low-paid workers operate in the service industry, in hotels and restaurants, and the majority of them are women.

Another vote, which was designed to ensure that bosses could earn no more than 12 times the salary of the lowest paid in their company, was narrowly defeated last November.

The latest opinion polls indicate the minimum wage proposal may be rejected.

Swiss monthly living costs:

  • One-bed city centre flat: 1,800 francs
  • Utilities: 100-200 francs
  • Health insurance: 300-400 francs
  • Public transport: 50-70 francs
  • Restaurant meal for two: 100-150 francs [youtube C0j9XP4asPI 650]

Soma mine death toll rises 301 as last bodies retrieved

The death toll of Soma mine disaster in Turkey has reached 301 after two more bodies were found.

The government has called a halt to the rescue operation as the bodies of all miners trapped after the mine collapsed are now thought to be recovered.

Protesters have clashed with police near Soma. Correspondents say more than 30 people, including several lawyers, have been arrested.

Demonstrations were held elsewhere over Turkey’s worst-ever mine disaster.

Hundreds of people marched through the western city of Izmir and there were protests in Istanbul and the capital, Ankara.

“The rescue operation was carried out to completion. There are no miners left underground,” Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said on Saturday.

“Until today we had focused on search and rescue efforts. Now we will be focusing on investigations, on what will happen about production.”

“We won’t be leaving (Soma) because the search efforts are ending,” Taner Yildiz, said, according to Associated Press.

“There will be psychological and social support.”

The local authorities have banned demonstrations in the Soma town centre. On Friday riot police used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon when a protest briefly turned violent there.

Police have reportedly been stopping coach-loads of protesters from entering Soma and several lawyers linked to Turkey’s opposition movement have been arrested.

Tuesday’s disaster occurred when an explosion sent carbon monoxide gas into the mine’s tunnels while 787 miners were underground.

Mine operator Soma Holding has denied any negligence. A representative said an unexplained build-up of heat in the mine appeared to have caused the collapse.

There have been several anti-government protests across the country over the last four days.

PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been criticised for appearing insensitive in his reaction to the disaster.

Pyongyang building collapse: North Korea in rare apology over disaster

The North Korean government has apologized for the collapse of an apartment building in Pyongyang last week which is feared to have killed scores of people.

The accident in Pyongyang on Tuesday was reported on Sunday morning by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The news agency said that the collapse happened in the city’s Phyongchon district.

While it is not clear how many people died, some reports say that the “unimaginable” accident could possibly have killed more than 100 residents.

North Korea has apologized for the collapse of an apartment building in Pyongyang which is feared to have killed scores of people

The construction of the apartment block “was not done properly and officials supervised and controlled it in an irresponsible manner”, the news agency said.

Correspondents say that it is extremely rare for North Korea to admit negative news, and the report from the official KCNA news agency included equally rare apologies from top officials.

An “intensive” emergency rescue effort had been carried out to rescue survivors and treat the wounded, it said.

The KCNA did not provide detailed casualty figures or explain the cause of the collapse, but said it had left Pyongyang citizens “greatly shocked”.

A South Korean official, speaking to the AP news agency on condition of anonymity, said the collapsed building was a 23-story apartment complex.

Another unidentified official told Reuters that the building was thought to have held 92 households.

“Hundreds are presumed to be dead, assuming that each family has an average of four members,” he said.

It is not uncommon for residents of partially built apartment blocks in North Korea to move into them before construction officially ends, correspondents say.

A senior Pyongyang official was quoted by KCNA as saying that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un “sat up all night, feeling painful” after being told about the collapse.

It is estimated that about 2.5 million people – mostly top party members or other privileged people – live in Pyongyang.

Pyongyang’s inhabitants are known to have more regular electricity supplies and better access to food, goods and other services compared with those living elsewhere in North Korea.

Tara the cat invited to throw first pitch at Bakersfield Blaze baseball game

Tara, the Bakersfield cat who was caught on video saving a boy from a dog attack, has been invited to “throw” the first pitch at a baseball game.

Tara would appear at the next home game of the minor league team Bakersfield Blaze, its representatives said.

“It sounds crazy. But we’ve got a trick up our sleeve,” team member Dan Besbris said, without giving further details.

Tara became a YouTube sensation after saving four-year-old Jeremy Triantafilo from the neighbor’s dog attack.

The California family’s CCTV video shows the dog biting and dragging the boy in a driveway in Bakersfield earlier this week.

The cat then pounces on and chases away the dog, described as a Labrador-Chow mix.

Jeremy Triantafilo – who needed stitches after the attack – praised his cat.

“She’s a hero,” he said.

The dog is now in quarantine and is expected to be put down.

Balkan floods: Bodies pulled from Sava River in Bosnia and Serbia

More than 20 people are feared dead in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia after the worst floods in more than a century.

Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes as several months of rain fell in a few days and rivers burst their banks.

Landslides have buried houses in Bosnia and reports say as many as 16 people may have died.

An outer suburb of the Serb capital Belgrade has been inundated and eight people are reported to have drowned.

Serbian PM Aleksandar Vucic told reporters the first bodies had been recovered in Obrenovac, the worst-hit area to the south-west of the capital, and he feared more would be found.

But he said the number of deaths would not be made public until the waters had receded.

A new flood surge was expected on the Sava River late on Sunday, he said.

In some areas, flood waters reached the second floor of people’s homes.

“The flash floods woke my uncle at around 0330 so they went up to the first floor. Then they had to go to the third floor because all lower floors were flooded,” one resident from Obrenovac said.

Rescue workers have been working to bring thousands of stranded residents to safety and officials have also ordered the evacuation of another town, Baric, closer to Belgrade.

The Sava River has risen particularly high in the western town of Sabac, and volunteers have tried to shore up flood defenses there.

Rescue co-ordinator Predrag Maric appealed for food, water, and clothing to help those in need.

One of the worst-hit areas in Bosnia is the eastern town of Bijeljina where rescue teams are trying to transport 10,000 people to safety.

Among those who drowned were 10 people in the Bosnian Serb Republic, police told local media. Six bodies were found in the northern town of Doboj and there are fears that more people have lost their lives.

Citalopram could slow onset of Alzheimer’s disease

0

Citalopram, an anti-depressant drug, could be used to slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, say scientists in the US.

Research into 23 people, and transgenic mice, found citalopram hampered a protein which helps to build destructive plaques in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

Scientists said they hoped the study could help prevent the disease.

Experts said the study was “interesting” and that using an approved drug could be beneficial.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.

Citalopram could be used to slow the onset of Alzheimer's disease
Citalopram could be used to slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease

It affects the brain through protein plaques and tangles which lead to the death of brain cells, and a shortage of chemicals important for transmitting messages.

Symptoms include loss of memory, mood changes, and problems with communication and reasoning.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Washington University School of Medicine carried out the study between 2012 and 2014.

They bred mice with Alzheimer’s disease and looked at the levels of the peptide – or protein component – amyloid beta (AB), in the brain.

AB clusters in plaques which, alongside the tau protein, are thought to trigger Alzheimer’s.

After giving the mice citalopram, the level of AB fell by 25%, compared to the control group, with no anti-depressant.

And after two months of anti-depressants, the growth of new plaques was reduced, and existing plaques did not grow any further, the study said.

But it noted the drug could not cause existing plaques to shrink, or decrease in number.

The 23 people used in the study were aged between 18 and 50 and were “healthy”, researchers said.

They were given a single dose of citalopram, and the levels of AB in their cerebrospinal fluid was monitored, according to the study.

Researchers said AB levels dropped by 38% in the 37-hour period after treatment, compared to a placebo test.

Lead author, Dr. Yvette Sheline, at the University of Pennsylvania, said the antidepressants worked by “clipping” the AB molecules so they were not able to function properly.

She said: “We had predicted the results, but they were very exciting.”

Dr. Yvette Sheline stressed the study was a “proof of concept” study, hence the small number of people without Alzheimer’s, and that if the results were successful, they could be used to slow the progression of the disease 10 to 15 years before it could typically become apparent.

She added: “I am eager to get on to the next study, where we will look at whether the effect can be sustained.”

Dr. Yvette Sheline said after that a “big study” spanning several years would look at the effectiveness of the drug in people compared to a placebo.

India elections 2014: Narendra Modi becomes India’s new prime minister

Indian PM-elect Narendra Modi has received an enthusiastic welcome at his BJP party’s headquarters in Delhi after securing the most decisive election victory in three decades.

Narendra Modi was cheered by supporters after a victory parade from the airport.

Manmohan Singh, whose Congress party was crushed in the poll, has tendered his resignation as prime minister.

Narendra Modi, a Hindu nationalist and chief minister of Gujarat, campaigned on promises to revive the economy.

Results show the BJP gained a majority in parliament and will be able to govern without coalition partners.

However, many Indians still have profound concerns over Narendra Modi because of claims he did little to stop communal riots in Gujarat in 2002 in which at least 1,000 people died, most of them Muslims.

narendra Modi has always denied the allegations and was never charged.

After arriving in Delhi from his home state of Gujarat, Narendra Modi was greeted by flag-waving supporters. He stepped out of his car, flashing a victory sign.

With votes still being counted, the BJP has won more than the 272 seats needed for a parliamentary majority.

With its allies, the party could get more than 330 seats out of 543.

Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Narendra Modi said: “I want to bow, I want to give my thanks… to the people of India.”

He said Indian media had created “consciousness among voters” and a “great festival of Indian democracy”.

On Friday, Narendra Modi wrote in a widely-shared tweet: “India has won, good days are about to come.”

He also told supporters he would rule for all Indians.

“The age of divisive politics has ended – from today onwards the politics of uniting people will begin.”

World leaders, including President Barack Obama and UK PM David Cameron, have congratulated Narendra Modi on his victory.

India’s new leader has received invitations to Washington and London. Previously, the US denied him visas and the UK cut off all ties with him following the 2002 riots.

Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif commended the BJP’s “impressive victory” in the election.

The Congress party, which has dominated Indian politics since independence, is only expected to win 44 seats.

Congress has been mired in serious corruption scandals and its leadership has been considered ineffective in recent years, analysts say.

Accepting defeat, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said: “We humbly respect the verdict of the people.”

Manmohan Singh met the president to hand in his resignation.

In a televised farewell address earlier on Saturday, Manmohan Singh said the government had achieved a lot in the last 10 years.

“I wish the incoming government every success,” Manmohan Singh said.

On Friday, Tim Lambesis learned of his punishment at a hearing in San Diego Superior Court, as three of his bandmates watched on.

Meggan Lambesis, who has also filed a $2 million civil suit against her former husband, spoke at the sentencing, claiming that the rocker’s behavior had changed drastically in the months leading up to his arrest in May, 2013.

Tim Lambesis was charged with one count of solicitation to commit murder and one count of conspiracy to commit a crime and has been under house arrest since pleading guilty to offering a sheriff’s deputy, posing as a hitman, $1,000 to kill Meggan. He also gave the agent his wife’s address and the security code to her front door.

The singer’s bandmates have announced a hiatus to allow him time to deal with his legal woes.

As he awaited sentencing, Tim Lambesis and bandmate Jordan Mancino released a statement which read: “As I Lay Dying is sleeping rather than dead… Tim has acknowledged his guilt and clearly made some bad decisions in a period of time where he acted contrary to the person he’s been most of his life.

“He believes As I Lay Dying should only pick back up if it’s in a form restored to its roots. For Tim, the potential of pursuing As I Lay Dying again means working on a lot of other more important things in his personal life first.”

Kim Kardashian asks to have Joan Rivers moved away from her at NBC Upfronts

Kim Kardashian was seated next to Joan Rivers during NBC Upfronts on May 15, but asked to have Rivers moved because of how many times the Fashion Police host has made fun of her and her family.

“Khloe and Kim were seated next to Joan Rivers, but they had them move her,” a source tells Us Weekly.

Joan Rivers, 80, recently made fun of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s daughter, North West, even going as far as to call the 11-month-old “ugly”.

The source adds that Kim Kardashian never confronted Joan Rivers about the remark, and “saw her at Jimmy Fallon and was polite and didn’t say anything”.

The source told the publication: “They even took a pic together when Joan asked.”

Joan Rivers has also spoofed Kim Kardashian’s s** tape with ex Ray J and mocked her siblings. Not to mention, she touched on Bruce Jenner’s appearance during an E!’s Fashion Police episode in the past.

“Kim and Khloe both don’t want drama and can’t fake it anymore with Joan, so they asked the staff to keep them separate,” the source told Us Weekly.

France hosts security summit on Boko Haram threat after Nigerian girls’ abduction

France is hosting a security summit on the threat from Boko Haram Islamists, after the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria last month.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and other West African leaders will attend the talks in Paris.

On Friday, Goodluck Jonathan was due to visit the north-eastern town of Chibok, where the girls were seized, but called it off for security reasons.

He has ruled out negotiations over their possible release, reports say.

On Thursday, relatives of the girls called for their unconditional release by Boko Haram.

This came three days after Boko Haram released a video showing more than 100 of the girls and offering an exchange for prisoners.

French President Francois Hollande is expected to open the summit later on Saturday.

The leaders of Nigeria’s neighbors – Benin, Cameroon, Niger and Chad – are scheduled to attend the talks, which will also include representatives from the UK, US and EU.

A statement said delegates at the meeting will “discuss fresh strategies for dealing with the security threat posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in West and Central Africa”.

Francois Hollande on Friday discussed the issue in a phone call with President Barack Obama.

The safe return of the 223 girls was now one of America’s main priorities, with US specialist teams and drones being involved in the rescue operation, the White House said.

France is also providing Nigeria with expert assistance to help release the girls.

US officials have criticized the speed of Nigeria’s response to the threat from Boko Haram.

Bones of biggest dinosaur ever unearthed in Argentina

Paleontologists in Argentina have discovered fossilized bones of a dinosaur believed to be the largest creature ever to walk the Earth.

Based on its huge thigh bones, the dinosaur was 130 ft long and 65 ft tall.

Weighing in at 77 tonnes, it was as heavy as 14 African elephants, and 7 tonnes heavier than the previous record holder, Argentinosaurus.

Scientists believe it is a new species of titanosaur – an enormous herbivore dating from the Late Cretaceous period.

A local farm worker first stumbled on the remains in the desert near La Flecha, about 135 miles west of Trelew, Patagonia.

The fossils were then excavated by a team of paleontologists from the Museum of Palaeontology Egidio Feruglio, led by Dr. Jose Luis Carballido and Dr. Diego Pol.

They unearthed the partial skeletons of seven individuals – about 150 bones in total – all in “remarkable condition”.

By measuring the length and circumference of the largest femur (thigh bone), they calculated the animal weighed 77 tonnes.

This giant herbivore lived in the forests of Patagonia between 95 and 100 million years ago, based on the age of the rocks in which its bones were found.

But despite its magnitude, it does not yet have a name.

“It will be named describing its magnificence and in honor to both the region and the farm owners who alerted us about the discovery,” the researchers said.

There have been many previous contenders for the title “world’s biggest dinosaur”.

The most recent pretender to the throne was Argentinosaurus, a similar type of sauropod, also discovered in Patagonia.

Originally thought to weigh in at 100 tonnes, it was later revised down to about 70 tonnes – just under the 77 tonnes that this new sauropod is thought to have weighed.

The picture is muddied by the various complicated methods for estimating size and weight, based on skeletons that are usually incomplete.

Argentinosaurus was estimated from only a few bones. But the researchers here had dozens to work with, making them more confident that they really have found “the big one”.
