Hong Kong protest: Occupy Central founders call for protesters to retreat

Occupy Central founders have repeated their call for Hong Kong protesters to retreat.

Benny Tai, Chan Kin-man and Chu Yiu-ming also said they would turn themselves in to police on December 3.

Occupy Central movement initially led the pro-democracy protests, but has receded as students continued with demonstrations.

Student leader Joshua Wong has begun a hunger strike to demand talks with the Hong Kong authorities over the movement’s ideas for political reforms.

Occupy and the students want China to scrap its plans to screen candidates for the 2017 election for the territory’s leadership. They want the Hong Kong government to renegotiate the arrangement with Beijing.

In a statement read out by Benny Tai at Tuesday’s press conference, where Chu Yiu-ming was seen weeping, the founders said they were handing themselves in to police to demonstrate “commitment and responsibility”.Hong Kong Occupy Central

The three added: “For the sake of the occupiers’ safety, for the sake of our original intention of love and peace, as we prepare to surrender, we three urge the students to retreat – to put down deep roots in the community and transform the movement to extend the spirit of the Umbrella Movement.”

Occupy Central plans to continue its work through public debates, community education and funding democracy groups.

Joshua Wong began his hunger strike on Monday night, along with two other members of his Scholarism group, in the hopes of reopening dialogue with the government and “restarting the political reform process”.

On December 2 he told reporters: “We admit that it’s difficult in the future to have an escalated action, so besides suffering from batons and tear gas, we would like to use our body to get public attention.”

“We are not sure if the hunger strike can put pressure on the government, but we hope that when the public realizes about the student hunger strike, they will ask themselves what they can do next.”

On Sunday night and early Monday, hundreds of protesters clashed with police as they tried to surround government offices in Admiralty.

The move was an escalation of protests in retaliation to authorities clearing the Mong Kok camp while acting on court orders. The protest sites at Admiralty and Causeway Bay still remain.

Kenya: Al-Shabab kills 36 Christians near Mandera

Thirty six people, mostly Christian quarry workers, have been killed by al-Shabab militants near the north Kenyan town of Mandera.

The attackers from the Somalia-based Islamist militant group separated Muslims from non-Muslims and shot the Christians dead, residents said.

Earlier, one person was killed in a bar popular with non-Muslims in a neighboring district.

Al-Shabab killed 28 people in an attack on a bus targeting non-Muslims in the same area last week.

The attack on the quarry workers took place early on December 2. Witnesses said the victims were caught after midnight, while sleeping in their tents at the quarry.Al Shabab Kenya

The attack took place in Kormey, 9 miles from Mandera town.

Al-Shabab said it carried out the attack.

Kenya’s Red Cross said on its Twitter feed that security personnel and one of its own teams were on the ground at the site of the attack.

In the attack on a bar in the town of Wajir earlier on Monday night, gunmen reportedly opened fire and hurled grenades, killing one and injuring 12.

Mandera County borders both Somalia and Ethiopia, and it is dominated by Somalis, who are largely Muslims.

Many of the quarry workers killed are reported to have come from the south of the country where Christians predominate.

Al-Shabab has stepped up its campaign in Kenya since 2011, when Kenya sent troops across the border to help battle the militants.

Study: HIV becomes less deadly and less infectious

0

According to a major scientific study, HIV is evolving into a milder form, becoming less deadly and less infectious.

The research team at the University of Oxford shows the virus is being “watered down” as it adapts to our immune systems.

It said it was taking longer for HIV infection to cause AIDS and that the changes in the virus may help efforts to contain the pandemic.

Some virologists suggest the virus may eventually become “almost harmless” as it continues to evolve.

More than 35 million people around the world are infected with HIV and inside their bodies a devastating battle takes place between the immune system and the virus.

HIV is a master of disguise. It rapidly and effortlessly mutates to evade and adapt to the immune system.

However, every so often HIV infects someone with a particularly effective immune system.HIV infections take milder forms

“[Then] the virus is trapped between a rock and hard place, it can get flattened or make a change to survive and if it has to change then it will come with a cost,” said Prof. Philip Goulder, from the University of Oxford.

The “cost” is a reduced ability to replicate, which in turn makes the virus less infectious and means it takes longer to cause AIDS.

This weakened virus is then spread to other people and a slow cycle of “watering-down” HIV begins.

The team showed this process happening in Africa by comparing Botswana, which has had an HIV problem for a long time, and South Africa where HIV arrived a decade later.

The findings in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences also suggested anti-retroviral drugs were forcing HIV to evolve into milder forms.

It showed the drugs would primarily target the nastiest versions of HIV and encourage the milder ones to thrive.

The group did caution that even a watered-down version of HIV was still dangerous and could cause AIDS.

HIV originally came from apes or monkeys, in which it is frequently a minor infection.

Phil Rudd pleads not guilty to New Zealand charges

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has pleaded not guilty to charges of threatening to kill and possession of drugs.

Phil Rudd, 60, was excused from appearing in New Zealand’s Tauranga District Court, with his lawyer entering his plea.

The Australian-born musician was originally charged with attempting to procure the murder of two men.

That charge was dropped because of a lack of evidence.Phil Rudd New Zealand charges

In an earlier ruling, the names of the alleged murder targets and that of the alleged hit-man were suppressed.

Crown prosecutor Greg Hollister-Jones on December 2 applied for witness names and any statements they made to be suppressed, according to New Zealand media outlet stuff.co.nz.

The court agreed but ruled that because of strong public interest in the case, details of the charges and a summary of facts should be released by the Crown.

Phil Rudd remains on bail and his case will be called again in February.

The drummer was kicked out of AC/DC in 1983 and rejoined in 1994.

Michael Brown shooting: Barack Obama asks Congress to fund body cameras for police

President Barack Obama has asked Congress to approve $263 million to improve police training, pay for body cameras and restore trust in policing.

Barack Obama asked Congress for the funds after a week of nationwide protests over perceived policing injustices.

Ferguson in Missouri was rocked by riots after a grand jury decided not to charge a white police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man.

Protests spread across the US and a mass walkout was held on December 1.

Students and workers held a lunchtime protest in several cities to highlight the issue.

“This is not a problem just of Ferguson, Missouri. This is a national problem, “ Barack Obama said.

The president spoke after a day of meetings with mayors, civil rights leaders and law enforcement officials at the White House.Barack Obama asks for police body camera

They discussed a program that currently provides redundant US military tactical gear to local police departments, free of charge.

Barack Obama said he has asked federal agencies for recommendations to ensure the program is not building a “militarized culture” in domestic police forces.

Police in Ferguson, Missouri, were criticized for being heavy-handed in dealing with protests sparked by the shooting of Michael Brown in August.

The funds requested by Barack Obama would be spread over three years and some of the money will go towards purchasing 50,000 body cameras for police officers as well as resources to reform law enforcement departments.

Body cameras can provide evidence of encounters between police and civilians, particularly in disputed cases such as the Ferguson shooting.

The president said the stories of discrimination that young people had told him at the White House on December 1 “violate my belief about what America can do”.

Barack Obama also unveiled a taskforce on modern policing, to be chaired by Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey.

Also on Monday, a commission tasked with making recommendations on issues stemming from the fatal shooting has convened in Ferguson.

The 16-member panel, stood up by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, will consider changes in areas including public interaction with law enforcement and community stability.

The officer who shot Michael Brown in Ferguson, Darren Wilson, resigned from the force over the weekend.

The decision not to charge Darren Wilson days earlier triggered a nationwide debate over relations between black communities and law enforcement.

The policeman said he had feared for his life.

Michael Brown’s supporters said the teenager was attempting to surrender when he was shot. Some witnesses said the 18-year-old, who was unarmed, had his hands up.

Sony Pictures hacking: North Korea refuses to deny involvement in cyber attack

North Korea refuses to deny involvement in Sony Pictures cyber-attack that came ahead of the release of The Interview movie about its leader Kim Jong-un.

Sony is investigating after its computers were attacked and unreleased films made available on the internet.

When asked if it was involved in the attack a spokesman for the North Korean government replied: “Wait and see.”

In June, North Korea complained to the UN and the US over the comedy film The Interview.

In the movie, Seth Rogen and James Franco play two reporters who are granted an audience with Kim Jong-un. The CIA then enlists the pair to assassinate him.North Korea Sony Pictures cyber attack

North Korea described the film as an act of war and an “undisguised sponsoring of terrorism”, and called on the US and the UN to block it.

California-based Sony Pictures’ computer system went down last week and hackers then published a number of as-yet un-released films on online download sites.

Among the titles is a remake of the classic film Annie, which is not due for release until December 19.

The Interview does not appear to have been leaked.

When asked about the cyber-attack, a spokesman for North Korea’s UN mission said: “The hostile forces are relating everything to the DPRK (North Korea). I kindly advise you to just wait and see.”

On December 1, Sony Pictures said it had restored a number of important services that had to be shut down after the attack.

The company said it was working closely with law enforcement officials to investigate the matter but made no mention of North Korea.

The FBI has confirmed that it is investigating. It has also warned other US businesses that unknown hackers have launched a cyber attack with destructive malware.

Mickey Rourke reportedly paid homeless Elliot Seymour to lose boxing match

According to new reports, Mickey Rourke paid mentally ill homeless fighter Elliott Seymour to lose their boxing match in Russia on November 29.

Mickey Rourke, 62, stopped Elliott Seymour within two rounds at the Luzhniki stadium after he appeared to punch the buttocks of his opponent in what was described as a farcical exhibition fight.

According to MailOnline, 29-year-old Elliott Seymour was in fact a homeless drifter who trained at the same gym as Mickey Rourke and was jetted into Russia merely to make battle-weary Rourke look good.

Elliott Seymour barely threw a punch at Mickey Rourke, who has vowed to stage another four fights in Russia, where he has attracted a large following.Mickey Rourke boxing match Elliott Seymour

A source told MailOnline: “It was clearly a fixed fight. The whole bouncing off the ropes, hands down, punches were not landing and they were intentionally hitting each other’s gloves.

“There are people at Wild Card gym who know that Elliot’s in a really terrible situation and pretty much living on the streets; these are Mickey Rourke’s people who Elliot’s been around and known for some time.”

A family source revealed text messages believed to be from Elliott Seymour’s friend, who helped organize the boxer’s passport for his flight to Russia. His mental stability was even questioned, but the latter claimed he would be fine since he’d be with “movie people.”

According to the unnamed family source, Elliott Seymour developed mental issues following the fall of his boxing career years ago when he turned professional. He allegedly started having problems with “anger issues and became rude and volatile” that his family had to request for a restraining order against him. The source claims he has been living on the streets for 18 months since May 2013. Seymour himself writes about being homeless on his Facebook page and frequents Pasadena’s Starbucks, where the manager confirmed he is homeless.

Mickey Rourke returned to boxing after 20 years and his first win happened in Moscow.

Prince Harry reveals his secret fear

Prince Harry has confessed his fears before making speeches and being anxious when he enters a room full of people.

The royal was speaking in a video as part of a campaign run by his Sentebale charity to help reduce the stigma associated with HIV.

The “Feel No Shame” films are being released to mark World AIDS Day.

Nicole Scherzinger, Paloma Faith, and Gemma Arterton have also made videos confessions.

In his message, Prince Harry said: “My secret is, believe it or not, I get incredibly nervous before public speaking, no matter how big the crowd or the audience.

“And despite the fact that I laugh and joke all the time, I get incredibly nervous, if not anxious actually, before going into rooms full of people when I’m wearing a suit.”Prince Harry Feel No Shame

The prince co-founded Sentebale in 2006 in Lesotho after travelling around the southern African country. It has the third highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world and many children and young adults have the disease themselves, or have lost parents to it.

The campaign aims to encourage people with HIV to seek medical support and education about their condition, and prevent the virus from spreading.

Dressed in a sweatshirt, Prince Harry added: “Now I’ve confessed that, I’ll probably be even more worried that people are looking at me, but thank you very much everyone who is taking part.”

Prince Harry launched the campaign in another video and asked members of the public to share their own secrets via social media in exchange for his confession.

He said: “To show our support for the children of Lesotho, and help reduce the stigma for all those affected by HIV, we are turning this World Aids Day into a day in which no-one should feel any shame about their secrets.

“Together, we can tackle the stigma surrounding HIV and give the young people carrying it the childhood they deserve, the childhood so many of us take for granted.”

2014 Black Friday sales fall 11% from same period last year

This year’s Black Friday sales fell 11% from the same period last year, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF).

US consumers spent on average $380.95 per person, down 6.4% from a year ago.

Overall, total Thanksgiving weekend sales were estimated to be $50.9 billion.

The NRF attributed the decline to shifting consumer habits, such as earlier promotions and the growth of online shopping.Black Friday 2014

“A strengthening economy that changes consumers’ reliance on deep discounts, a highly competitive environment, early promotions and the ability to shop 24/7 online all contributed to the shift witnessed this weekend,” said NRF president and chief executive Matthew Shay in a statement.

Once more, retailers chose to open earlier on Thanksgiving Thursday in the hope of luring in more shoppers, with Wal-Mart, Target, Macy’s and others offering special promotions for those first through the door.

However, those deals and earlier hours appear not to have convinced shoppers to spend, perhaps because they expect further deals as the holiday shopping period progresses.

The decline in sales surprised many, who had seen increasingly positive US economic data as well as lower gas prices as signs that the US holiday shopping season would be better than it has been in the past.

Last week, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis revised its initial estimate of third-quarter US economic growth upwards.

The figures showed the US economy expanded at an annualized rate of 3.9% between July and September, up from the 3.5% first estimated.

Tugce Albayrak: Surveillance video shows fatal strike

A car park surveillance video shows a man striking Tugce Albayrak, who died after trying to stop the harassment of two girls.

Tugce Albayrak’s death on November 28 left Germany in shock. There were candle-lit vigils in Berlin and other cities.

The girls whom Tugce Albayrak defended have not yet given statements to police.

Bild newspaper published the video of the November 15 attack, outside a fast-food restaurant in the town of Offenbach, near Frankfurt.

Another man is seen trying to restrain the suspect, named only as Senal M, before he throws the fatal punch which leaves Tugce Albayrak lying flat on the ground, motionless among a group of people.

The student teacher was in a coma for two weeks before her life support was switched off on November 28, her 23rd birthday.Tugce Albayrak attack

Tugce Albayrak had intervened when she heard cries for help from the toilet of a fast food restaurant, German media report.

A post mortem examination was expected to be carried out on December 1, to determine whether it was the punch that killed her or the impact to her head when she hit the ground.

Thousands of Germans paid tribute to Tugce Albayrak at the weekend.

Germany’s President Joachim Gauck said she had shown “exemplary courage and moral fortitude”.

Police in Offenbach were hopeful that the release of the video would stir further witnesses to come forward.

The suspect, 18, is in custody. He is from the Sandzak region of Serbia and has confessed to striking Tugce Albayrak, German public radio station Deutsche Welle reports.

A petition calling for Tugce Albayrak, an ethnic Turk, to be awarded the national order for merit posthumously has gathered more than 100,000 signatures.

Confirming he would consider the award, President Joachim Gauck wrote to her family to say: “Like countless citizens, I am shocked and appalled by this terrible act. Tugce has earned gratitude and respect from us all.

“She will always remain a role model to us, our entire country mourns with you.”

Free Up Those Funds: Turn Your Business Assets Into Cash

0

It goes without saying that the contemporary business environment is ruthless as never before. Companies come and go daily, sinking under in the hugely competitive environments which they have never before been subjected to. Any modern business owner must work extremely hard to keep their business afloat and successful.

Liquidating assets is the perfect way to raise funds in such an environment. Historically raising money in this way has been associated with going into administration, however there are degrees of severity in the action. And modern businesses cannot afford to be proud when it comes to sending their assets down the river. It is good business practice to sell those parts of your enterprise which are not currently serving any function. One should not be stopped from doing so by pride or anxiety regarding public perception. To emphasis it once again, there is no room for self-regard in the current environment. Money is money, and it is the lifeblood of any business.

With that in mind, we’ve assembled a small guide on the best ways to turn your solid assets into funds which can assist with the day-to-day running of your company. When used sparingly and with a sense of propriety these tips can be extremely helpful to your company, whether it’s in dire need or not.

Here are our top tips for the modern, ruthless business environment.

Audit

Undertake an extensive internal audit. What is being used? What can be jettisoned from your base of operations without being missed in the long term? You may sell some small piece of equipment, only to find that in one year you need it. And in this case, the hire cost may be exponentially higher than it was to buy the piece initially. This is what you’re trying to avoid. It can be tempting to see all of your assets, whether they’re property or Auto Trader plant equipment, as money in the bank. But you should remember that you’re saving this cash for the future of your business. If you begin to save now at the expense of the future, it’s almost certain that you will regret it.

Remember, you’re helping the functioning aspects of your business. You’re not going into administration.

Evaluation

Because you’re not going into administration, you should be able to get more for what you’re selling off. Businesses that have gone bankrupt are forced to sell their assets at a very low cost to meet the remainders of their obligations. You are at an advantage in this regard, as you don’t have to sell anything. You have no time restraints, and you certainly aren’t being legally compelled to sell. Make sure that you take this hint. Shop around in the same way that you would when you buy anything big. See what your assets are worth, and don’t be taken for a fool. Sell to the highest bidder, and understand when you’re being taken for a ride.

Planning

Don’t suddenly sell half of your business. This should be a gradual process which adds to the functionality of your operations. It should not result in you suddenly having a crisis as you’ve somehow pulled the ground out from under your own feet. You should be thinking months, if not years, in advance. This isn’t a short term strategy, but if you manage it well, it can be a long term way of steering into the terrible financial conditions.

You should also consider using professional consultants in this regard. With a more objective understanding of your operations, they will be able to spot deadweight from the outside. This can, however, be a costly endeavor which turns out to be more of an investment than a quick fix.

Be Positive

This doesn’t have to be a negative experience. Many businesses could do with shedding some excess weight, and yours is no exception. This is a prime opportunity to diversify your operations, making sure that you move with as much freedom and flexibility as possible in a difficult climate. When you’re thinking about assets that can be turned into cash, you should be thinking about minimalism. They say that perfection does not mean adding more and more. They say it truly means taking away more and more, with everything still working. Once you’re down to the brass tacks of what makes your business run, that is true streamlined perfection. Aim for this, and selling your assets can be a positive and useful experience for everyone involved.

Common Sense

It should go without saying, but it doesn’t. So much of this sounds complicated and difficult, but it really isn’t. This is all a matter of common sense.

If your garage is cluttered, you have a yard sale. A less cluttered garage means you can use it more easily, and the extra cash is incredibly useful for your household. This is pretty much how selling off assets should work. Don’t overthink the core principles.

At the same time, though, you should be ruthless. When you’re having a big tidy up, you have to make some tough decisions about what to throw away and what to keep. More often than not you’ll get rid of something you quite wanted to keep at the time, before realising later that the space it freed up is more valuable to you. Try to think in a similar manner as you work your way through an audit, and try to keep yourself emotionally distant from the whole process.

Plan, Plan, Plan

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again. Planning is definitely key here. This isn’t a quick fix for much-needed cash. This is a long term action to be taken over a prolonged period of time. You should spend at least as much time planning as you intend to spend making the cuts and sales, so don’t be afraid of dragging your feet. It is ultimately a very difficult process to master as it requires both subtlety and decisiveness with an emphasis on forward thinking. You may never be truly happy with the results, but with proper planning you will be sure to garner the best results for your business.

Elizabeth Lauten resigns after criticizing Malia and Sasha Obama

GOP aide Elizabeth Lauten has resigned after accusing President Barack Obama’s daughters of lacking class.

Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Congressman Stephen Fincher, gave up her post on December 1.

She earlier criticized Malia and Sasha Obama on Facebook following their appearance in short skirts at Thanksgiving turkey pardon ceremony.

She later took down the post and apologized for her “hurtful words”.

Elizabeth Lauten had also accused Malia and Sasha Obama of looking bored when they stood with their father at a traditional turkey pardoning event at the White House.

While most commentators reported humorously on what they saw as the uninterested expressions of Malia, 16, and Sasha, 13, throughout the ceremony, Elizabeth Lauten was notably more outspoken.Elizabeth Lauten Obama daughters row

Her deleted post reads: “Dear Sasha and Malia: I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play.

“Then again, your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter. So I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the <<good role model>> department.”

The post goes on to advise Malia and Sasha Obama to “rise to the occasion and act like being in the White House matters to you”.

“Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar,” Elizabeth Lauten added.

In her subsequent apology, Elizabeth Lauten wrote: “After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were.

“I’d like to apologize to all of those who I have hurt and offended with my words, and I pledge to learn and grow (and I assure you I have) from this experience.”

She pointed out that she “had judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager”.

Sasha and Malia Obama are among the youngest presidential children at the White House for years.

Sony Pictures unreleased movies leaked online following cyber attack

Over the Thanksgiving weekend five films distributed by Sony Pictures leaked online following a reported cyber-attack on the company.

Among the titles is a remake of classic film Annie, which is not due for release until December 19.

Sony Pictures was reported to have shut down its internal systems last week due to an “IT matter”.

Some have linked the cyber-attack to forthcoming film The Interview, Sony’s comedy about North Korea.

That film does not appear to have been leaked. The Interview Sony leaked movie

However, reports say other high-profile titles have been circulated. Among them Fury, starring Brad Pitt, which was in cinemas in October but is yet to be made available on DVD.

According to research firm Excipio, Mr. Turner, Still Alice and To Write Love on Her Arms are also being distributed and downloaded.

Sony has not confirmed the authenticity of the leak, but was quoted in Variety magazine as saying: “The theft of Sony Pictures Entertainment content is a criminal matter, and we are working closely with law enforcement to address it.”

Little is known about the breach of Sony’s systems last month.

A group calling itself the Guardians of Peace – #GOP – claimed responsibility.

Some reports said some computers of Sony employees displayed a picture of a skeleton, threatening to release large amounts of data from the company.

The early leak of films is considered, by the film industry, to have a devastating effect on the potential success of a title.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer inspires spoofs

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer has amassed more than 40 million YouTube views in 72 hours.

The newly released trailer has also inspired a series of spoofs, including a “George Lucas edition”, which pokes fun at the director’s poorly received prequels.

The parody – viewed nearly four million times – was created by Michael Shanks and is cluttered with extra CGI and a voice-over about trade negotiations.

A Lego version of the trailer appeared within 24 hours of the original.

Pieced together brick by brick and shot by shot, the video recreates shots of a rolling R2 droid and the Millennium Falcon.

The animator also comes up with an ingenious way of replicating the new three-pronged lightsaber.

It has so far been seen two million times.Star Wars The Force Awakens

A third parody takes aim at director JJ Abrams, who has been hired to oversee the renewal of the sci-fi franchise.

Noting his fondness for lens flare (the director took the unusual step of apologizing for over-using the effect in his Star Trek films) it adds glaring reflections to every shining surface in the trailer.

The official teaser trailer – the first look at a film that is not out for another year – has generated reams of media coverage.

It opens with a simple shot of the desert and a mysterious voice (now confirmed to be Andy Serkis) intoning: “There has been an awakening.”

John Boyega then bursts cartoonishly into frame, wearing the suit of a Storm Trooper.

We also see newcomer Daisy Ridley as the film’s heroine and Oscar Isaac as an X-Wing pilot, as well as a long tracking shot of the Millennium Falcon.

The seventh episode of the Star Wars universe, The Force Awakens is due for release in December 2015.

Kirk Douglas dead? People magazine accidentally publishes Kirk Douglas’ obituary

People magazine accidentally published Kirk Douglas’ obituary on November 30.

Under the headline “DO NOT PUB Kirk Douglas Dies,” People magazine accidently posted a pre-written tribute to the actor, who turns 98 on December 9.

The post listed details about Kirk Douglas’s life and career spanning six decades, including his 1956 Vincent Van Gogh biopic Lust for Life.Kirk Douglas obituary People magazine

The obituary, which sparked reaction on Twitter, has been since removed.

It is unclear whether the tribute, which had a date stamp of September 29, had been online for two months.

It read: “Kirk Douglas, one of the few genuine box-office names to emerge just as TV was overtaking American culture in the years right after World War II, died TK TK TK. He was 97 (DOB 12/9/1916) and had been in good health despite having suffered a debilitating 1996 stroke that rendered his speech difficult.”

It is common for media outlets to write obituaries of celebrities or important figures in advance.

In 2008, Bloomberg made a similar mistake when it reported Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had died, three years before his actual death in 2011.

Oryong 501: South Korean fishing boat sinks off Russia’s Chukotka peninsula

A South Korean fishing boat sank off Russia’s far eastern Chukotka peninsula leaving one person dead and at least 52 missing, officials say.

The trawler Oryong 501 became stranded in the Bering Sea at around 05:20 GMT, the South Korean government said.

The 60-strong crew comprised 35 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos, 11 South Koreans and a Russian inspector.Chukotka peninsula

Russian media said seven people had been saved, but weather and water conditions were hampering the search.

The boat sent no distress signal before the incident, the RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing law enforcement officials.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap said the 1,590-tonne Oryong 501 was built about 40 years ago and was operated by Sajo Industries.

Moldova elections 2014: Pro-EU parties take narrow lead over pro-Russia rivals

The Moldovan pro-EU parties have a narrow lead over those backing closer ties with Russia, the latest results from the country’s parliamentary elections show.

With 89% of the votes counted, the three pro-Western parties have about 44%. The opposition has 39%.

No party appears to be able to form a government, and tough post-election bargaining is predicted.

The elections have taken on a wider significance in the shadow of the conflict in neighboring Ukraine.

Moldova and Ukraine have signed far-reaching partnership agreements with the EU, bitterly opposed by Russia.

On the eve of the vote, one pro-Russian party was banned from Sunday’s poll – a move criticized by Russia.

Residents of the Russian-backed breakaway region of Trans-Dniester did not take part in the election.

Photo Reuters
Photo Reuters

According to latest results, the three pro-European parties are set to have 57-58 seats in Moldova’s 101-seat parliament, while the two pro-Russian opposition parties are expected to hold 43-44 seats, reports say.

The pro-Russian Socialist Party led with more than 21% of the vote. The Communist Party was in third with almost 18%. The party is a Soviet-era survivor that still uses the hammer and sickle as its symbol, although it is not seen as fundamentally opposed to EU integration.

The pro-EU Liberal Democrats are in second place with 19%. The party wants Moldova to achieve EU candidate status by 2017 and full membership by 2020. Two other pro-Europe parties – the Democrats and the Liberals – are on just under 16% and 9% respectively.

There have been reports that the pro-EU parties may now try to form a “grand coalition” with the communists to keep the country on the European track.

Ahead of the Moldova vote, analysts said poll ratings of the Socialists, who want Moldova to turn its back on the EU and join a Russia-dominated economic bloc, had been boosted by their populist campaigning, including concerts by Russian pop stars.

Turnout was just under 56%, the central electoral commission said, out of a total of 2.7 million eligible voters.

Parties need to get at least 6% of the vote to gain seats in parliament.

Indian sisters fightback video becomes viral

The video of two Indian sisters beating up three men who were allegedly harassing them on a moving bus in the northern state of Haryana has gone viral on social media.

The men have been arrested and charged with assault, police said.

The incident happened on November 28 and was recorded by a passenger on a mobile phone.

Violence against Indian women has been in the spotlight since the gang rape and murder of a student on a bus in the capital, Delhi, in December 2012.

The attack caused outrage and prompted India to introduce stringent anti-rape laws.

The latest incident happened in Rohtak district when the two students, aged 22 and 19, were on their way home.

One of the women told the Press Trust of India news agency that the three young men “threatened us and abused us”.Indian sisters fightback Eve teasing

“One of them touched my sister inappropriately… After a heated exchange, one of the boys called his friends asking him to beat us up. One of them beat my sister while two others caught hold of me,” she said.

The women said they decided to take on the attackers when other passengers did not come to their help.

The sisters said the men pushed them out of the bus when it came to a halt after some distance and attacked them again.

They said they retaliated by throwing a brick at the men who then fled.

Police say they received a call from the women on November 28, and the three men were arrested on November 29.

Senior police official S Anand told The Hindu newspaper that they were contemplating action against the bus driver and his helper.

“The driver was supposed to take the bus to the nearest police station. But he did not do so. The conductor also did not intervene. We are considering legal action against them,” he said.

Correspondents say public abuse of women – called “Eve teasing” in India – is rampant in parts of the country.

“Eve teasing” makes life miserable and even dangerous for women when they go out in public and use public transport.

Australia hit by extreme hot weather

Australia is suffering from extreme hot weather for 13 days.

The stretch with temperatures exceeding 40C in Longreach that ended last week was some of the hottest weather in living memory for the Queensland town.

It was also a new heatwave record for the cattle country town, beating the previous record by four days, according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

Livestock dams began drying up, local companies asked staff to start work early to avoid the worst of the heat and native animals struggled to find water.

It was not an isolated weather pattern. Last year was Australia’s hottest since records began in 1910, according to the bureau.

Thanks to climate change, much of Australia will be subjected to longer, hotter and more regular spells of extremely hot weather, say climate scientists.

Symptoms of severe heat stress include dizziness, headaches, confusion and fainting. More severe outcomes include dehydration, loss of fluids and electrolytes, and kidney and heart damage.

Tennis Australia is reviewing its hot weather policy after the 2014 Australian Open in Melbourne was disrupted by a week-long heatwave in January.

Organizers of the event – the first of four annual international Grand Slam tennis events – implemented an extreme-heat policy halfway through the tournament when temperatures on the outside courts hit 43C.

The roofs on the central arenas were closed when the mercury hit 43.9C, although play continued.

Football NSW, which represents about 220,000 players, has had a hot-weather policy in place since 2011, says the association’s risk manager Michelle Hanley.

Heatwaves are occurring more often because of climate change, says climate scientist Sarah Perkins.

The University of New South Wales researcher, who specializes in heatwaves, says Australia is experiencing different types of extreme temperatures, including hotter, longer and more regular periods of heat.

Gauhar Khan slapped during India’s Raw Star shooting for wearing short dress

Gauhar Khan was slapped during the shooting of reality show India’s Raw Star by a member of the audience who admonished her for wearing a short dress.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man for attacking the Bollywood actress and model during the shooting of India’s Raw Star in Mumbai.

They quoted the man as telling Gauhar Khan that “being a Muslim woman, she should not have worn such a short dress”.

Gauhar Khan’s attacker will be produced in court on December 1.

The incident took place on November 30 during the final episode of the show, reports said.

“A preliminary probe has revealed that someone from the audience started teasing Khan to which she protested. An argument ensued between Gauhar and the man who was teasing her. Things turned ugly when the man suddenly slapped the actor,” The Hindustan Times quoted a police official as saying.

Reports said security men present at the venue overpowered the man and handed him over to the police.

Police have registered a case of assaulting a woman against Gauhar Khan’s attacker.

Gauhar Khan has acted in about half a dozen films and was appreciated for her role in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year.

Hong Kong clashes near government offices

Hong Kong pro-democracy activists have clashed with police near the government offices, in some of the worst unrest in two months of protests.

Protesters fought police armed with pepper spray, batons and water hoses on roads around the camp in Admiralty.

Police say 40 people have been arrested and a number of officers were injured.

The protesters want the people of Hong Kong to be allowed to choose their leaders in the 2017 elections without interference from Beijing.

The Chinese government has said it will allow universal suffrage, but will screen candidates for the chief executive post in advance.

Last week police and court bailiffs removed one of the major protest camps in the Mong Kok commercial district.

The protesters had public support at the beginning, but that is now ebbing as many Hong Kong residents believe the protests are causing too much disruption.

The unrest flared late on November 30, after student protest leaders called on supporters to converge on the offices of Chief Executive CY Leung on Lung Wo Road.

The road is a short distance away from Connaught Road in Admiralty, the major road protesters have been occupying for two months.

Protesters, many wearing hard hats and carrying umbrellas – the symbol of their movement – moved into the area, throwing bottles, helmets and umbrellas towards police.

Police ordered them to retreat, then charged protesters, eventually forcing them out of the area. Police sprayed water to disperse protesters, in addition to batons and pepper spray.

On December 1, government offices were shut and staff were told to stay home. But the roads outside the government site were clear of protesters and open for traffic.

By afternoon government employees were able to go back to work.

The atmosphere remains tense at Connaught Road where hundreds of protesters are still occupying the area amid a police presence.

Hong Kong’s security secretary, Lai Tung-kwow, has blamed students for escalating violent behavior, and defended the use of force by police.

“The police have to take resolute actions, they have no choice … it is their duty to restore law and order,” Lai Tung-kwow told reporters at a press conference on December 1.

Last week more than 100 people – including some key protest leaders – were arrested as the Mong Kok camp, across the harbor from Admiralty, was dismantled.

The latest clashes come after China said it would not allow a UK parliamentary committee to enter Hong Kong as part of an inquiry into British relations with its former colony.

Internships programs

These programs typically require the partnership between American universities and host universities abroad where there can also be service learning. However, the program emphasizes on the need to seek approval from both institutions prior to the internship program for those interested in cross cultural learning.

Summer time study programs

Host universities abroad make prior arrangements with American universities and students to allow the visiting students to study for the summer program. In most cases, students learn for one semester, and language proficiency is necessary as this makes it easier for the students to understand the subject matter.

Host university sponsor

Study programs classified under the duration aspect are not the only popular options. According to custom essay services, students may visit and study abroad through paying fees in their home universities. This option works well when there are arrangements between the home and foreign institutions. Nonetheless, students have to take care of accommodation and transportation, but since there is credit transfers the program is popular.

Direct sponsorship by U.S universities

This option allows students to study in foreign institutions, but the programs follow a U.S. academic framework.  There are many similarities since students can use credit transfer and follow the same academic calendar to the U.S.  The option also integrates international branches of U.S. colleges and universities.   Even though, students may want to experience different cultural perspectives on learning, the problem of funding is a challenge.  Hence, sponsored travel study programs tend to be popular among U.S students.

Swiss gold referendum rejected by 78% of voters

The Swiss referendum that would have required the Swiss National Bank (SNB) hold 20% of its reserves in gold has been rejected by the majority of voters.

Early projections from Swiss broadcaster SRF show 78% of voters rejecting the change.

Two separate proposals that would have curbed immigration and closed a tax loophole for foreigners were also easily defeated, according to projections.

Under Swiss law, any petition signed by 100,000 voters must go to a national vote. Past referendums have covered topics as varied as gun control, a public smoking ban, allowing shareholders to limit executives’ salaries, and assigning state legal aid to animals that might have suffered abuse.Swiss gold referendum

Gold bugs were optimistic about the vote in early November but in the past two weeks hopes began to dim. On Friday, gold fell $24 to 1167, the lowest since November 14.

The plan’s proponents wanted one fifth of the SNB’s reserves to be in gold, which would have involved buying about 1,500 metric tons in the coming 60 months.

Switzerland’s wealthy residents drawn to the tax haven also looked set to offer their thanks to ordinary voters.

A bid to scrap the “Pauschalsteuer” – a controversial law allowing Swiss residents who work outside to the country to pay tax on their spending, not their income – also looked set to fail just over an hour after polls closed.

Ecopop initiative: Swiss voters reject referendum proposal to cut net immigration

The Swiss voters have decisively rejected the Ecopop proposal to cut net immigration to no more than 0.2% of the population.

Switzerland’s 26 cantons rejected the proposal, with about 74% of people voting No in Sunday’s referendum.

Supporters of the measure argued that it would have reduced pressure on Switzerland’s resources. Opponents said it would have been bad for the economy.

Around a quarter of Switzerland’s eight million people are foreigners.

The measure would have required the government to reduce immigration from about 80,000 to 16,000 people a year.

Under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy, citizens can force a referendum if they muster enough signatures of support.

Switzerland voted in February to re-introduce immigration quotas, in effect opting out of an EU free movement agreement.

The government still has to implement that referendum result, which threw relations with the EU into turmoil.

Two other referendums were also being held on November: one on forcing the central bank to boost its gold reserves and one on scrapping a tax perk for wealthy foreigners.

They, too, failed to garner enough support for the measures to pass into law.

The immigration proposal was dubbed the Ecopop measure, after Switzerland’s 40-year-old Ecopop movement which seeks to link environmental protection with controlling population growth.

Switzerland’s population has grown by over a million in 20 years, and is currently 8.2 million. Some 23% of its inhabitants are foreign nationals, most of them from EU states.

Last year, net immigration stood at 81,000, according to public broadcaster Swiss Info.

Supporters of the measure said restricting immigration would safeguard Switzerland’s environment by reducing the need for new transport links and new housing.

The proposal also included a measure to limit overpopulation abroad by devoting 10% of Switzerland’s overseas aid to family planning in developing countries.

Opponents, among them all the major political parties, argued that the proposals would be bad for the economy because business leaders wanted to be able to recruit skilled labor from across Europe.

They also feared that if passed, the measure could put the country in breach of its international commitments and damage its image.

Switzerland’s population is about 8.18 million – of whom 1.96 million are not Swiss nationals, according to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO). EU citizens make up the vast majority of immigrants.

The largest group of foreign nationals living in Switzerland is Italians; immigration from Italy started more than one hundred years ago, but difficulties getting Swiss nationality meant many families remained Italian.

The second largest group comes from Germany, and the third largest comes from the former Yugoslavia.
