Bob Iger, chairman of ABC’s owner, the Walt Disney Company, described Frank Gifford as “an exceptional man who will be missed by everyone who had the joy of seeing his talent on the field, the pleasure of watching his broadcasts, or the honor of knowing him”.

Frank Gifford made 367 catches for 5,434 yards with 43 touchdowns, whilst also running for 3,609 yards and 34 touchdowns.

He was the MVP in 1956 and was an eight-time selection to the Pro Bowl.

In a Twitter post, Kathie Lee Gifford said: “Deeply grateful to all 4 ur outpouring of grace. We r steadfast in our faith and finding comfort in knowing where Frank is.”

Vegemite Sales Won’t Be Limited in Australian Remote Communities

0

Australia’s PM Tony Abbott has announced that Vegemite sales will not be limited in remote communities, amid reports the spread was being used in home-brewed alcohol.

The prime minister said he did not want a “Vegemite watch”.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion had earlier described Vegemite as a “precursor to misery”, according to local media.

However, Tony Abbott said for most people Vegemite, made from brewers’ yeast extract, was “reasonably nutritious”.Australia Vegemite sales ban

“This is a deregulatory government and the last thing I want to do is to have a Vegemite watch,” he told local media on August 9.

A Queensland newspaper had reported that Vegemite was being made into alcohol in large quantities in some remote Indigenous communities.

Nigel Scullion was quoted saying the spread was being bought in bulk to make moonshine.

“Businesses in these communities… have a responsibility to report any purchase that may raise their own suspicions,” he said.

The minister added that in some cases, children were failing to turn up to school because they were too hung-over, and that Vegemite was an increasingly common factor in domestic violence cases.

Dr. John Boffa of the People’s Alcohol Action Coalition, who is based in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, said the problem was not widespread.

David Conley Charged with Capital Murder over Texas Killings

0

Texas police has found six children and two adults handcuffed and fatally shot in the head in a Houston-area home, following the arrest of a man who exchanged gunfire with officers.

The gunfire broke out when officers who had been called to the home late on Saturday spotted the body of a child and tried to enter.

A man surrendered about an hour later, after talks with police negotiators.

Police said the suspect, David Conley, was later charged with capital murder.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the bodies were found after “a welfare check was conducted on the premises” by deputies at about 21:00 local time.

The dead were identified as Dewayne Jackson, 50, his wife Valerie Jackson, 40, and children Nathaniel, 13, Dewayne, 10, Honesty, 11, Caleb, 9, Trinity, 7, and Jonah, 6.

Nathaniel was believed to be the son of David Conley, 48, and Valerie Jackson from a previous relationship.

Chief Deputy Tim Cannon of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said: “We… cannot fully comprehend the motivation of an individual that would take the lives of so many innocent people. Especially the lives of the youngest.

“The killer’s motives appear to be related to a dispute with Valerie.”

David Conley is being held in jail without bond.

The officials had previously said the bodies of five children and three adults were found in the house.

Court records showed that David Conley’s criminal history dated back to at least 1988, the Associated Press reports.

Last month, he was charged with assault of a family member, the news agency says.

Donald Trump Defends His Relation with Women After Attacking Megyn Kelly

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump has defended his relations with women, calling them “tremendous”, but stopped short of apologizing for attacking Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly.

Donald Trump was criticized for seeming to suggest that Megyn Kelly was tough on him in Thursday’s first GOP debate because she was menstruating.

In an interview with ABC’s This Week on August 9, the tycoon said that only a “sick person” would interpret his remarks that way.

Donald Trump is running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

The billionaire, who spoke to a number of news outlets on August 9, said he had an “amazing” relationship with women in business.

“They are phenomenal. And I have many executives that are women,” he told ABC’s This Week.

“They are doing a phenomenal job. I pay them a tremendous amount of money. Donald Trump scandal with Megyn Kelly

“They make money for me. They make money for themselves. And in many cases, they truly are really talented and they can be killers.”

On August 6, Donald Trump was one of 10 Republican hopefuls taking part in a debate on Fox News, co-hosted by Megyn Kelly.

Megyn Kelly asked Donald Trump why voters should elect a man who has called women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals”, a question the tycoon later said was “nasty”.

On August 7, Donald Trump told CNN: “You could see there was blood coming out of her [Ms Kelly’s] eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.”

Many of his challengers called on him to apologize, and a major US conservative forum dropped him as a speaker in the wake of the remarks.

In the ABC interview, Donald Trump repeated his assertions that he had been misunderstood, saying he had “nothing against” Megyn Kelly, while declining to apologize.

Donald Trump also attacked rival Jeb Bush, who himself is under fire after having to backtrack on comments that the US government was spending too much on women’s health.

“What he said about women and women’s health issues was ridiculous, and I’m the exact opposite,” said Donald Trump.

Donald Trump is ahead of the 16 other Republican candidates in several recent polls despite a string of controversial remarks since launching his campaign.

Donald Trump Fires Campaign Adviser Roger Stone

Donald Trump has announced on August 8 that he fired his campaign top adviser Roger Stone.

However, Roger Stone insists that he really dumped the GOP presidential font-runner.

Roger Stone said his departure was spurred by Donald Trump’s decision to continue trash-talking Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly after Thursday night’s debate.

The veteran political consultant tweeted on August 8: “Sorry @realDonaldTrump didn’t fire me – I fired Trump.

“Disagree with diversion to food fight with @megynkelly.”

With Donald Trump insulting Megyn Kelly via Twitter and in a damaging interview, steered attention “away (from) core issue messages”, Roger Stone tweeted.

Donald Trump was told by organizers to stay home Saturday from the RedState Gathering, a high-profile Georgia meeting of influential conservative activists, after one particularly noxious remark.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Donald Trump said that he fired Roger Stone in an effort to rid his campaign of “publicity seekers”.

“I want to surround myself only with the best and most serious people,” the billionaire said.

“We want top of the line pros.”

Donald Trump added that he would not apologize to Megyn Kelly, and was moving on from his campaign’s latest verbal conflagration.

His remarks about Mexicans, Senator John McCain and Rosie O’Donnell have defined his presidential run as much as any policy positions.

Haiti Elections 2015: Tight Security for Long Awaited Parliamentary Elections

Haiti is voting in general elections that have been repeatedly delayed since 2011.

Thousands of police have been deployed as voters are choosing two-thirds of the senate and the chamber of deputies. A presidential poll is set for October.

President Michel Martelly, who is barred from running again by the constitution, has ruled by decree.

The opposition has accused Michel Martelly of abusing his powers.

Polling stations across Haiti are due to open at 06:00 local time and will close at 16:00.Haiti elections 2015

Nearly six million eligible voters are choosing 119 deputies and 20 senators from more than 1,800 candidates registered from different political parties.

The run-off round will be held on October 25 – the same day as the presidential election.

Several people have been killed since campaigning for Sunday’s poll opened in July.

Haiti’s police are being helped by UN police and peacekeepers to ensure safety during the voting.

Haiti’s parliament was dissolved in January over its failure to hold elections, leaving Haiti without a functioning government.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, and is still struggling with the legacy of the devastating 2010 earthquake.

Nagasaki Marks 70th Anniversary Since Atomic Bombing Attack

Nagasaki has marked the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing attack on Sunday, August 9.

Speeches at the ceremony criticized the attending PM Shinzo Abe for his plans to loosen the restrictions on what Japan’s military can do.

At least 70,000 people died in the US forces attack, which came three days after another bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

Nagasaki was only chosen after a cloud obscured the original target, Kokura.

A solemn ceremony in front of guests from 75 countries, including US ambassador Caroline Kennedy, began with a declaration read out by children.

A minute’s silence and bells marked the time of the explosion in 1945 at 11:02.Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombing 1945

Nagasaki mayor Tomihisa Taue then delivered a peace declaration to the ceremony. He said there was “widespread unease” about PM Shinzo Abe’s bid to alter the country’s pacifist constitutional.

A survivor of the Nagasaki attack, 86-year-old Sumiteru Taniguchi, described the injuries he had suffered and said he could not accept Shinzo Abe’s new legislation.

The legislation would allow Japan to engage in combat – in defense of an ally which comes under attack – for the first time since World War Two.

In his address to the ceremony, PM Shinzo Abe said Japan remained “determined to pursue a world without nuclear weapons”.

In a statement read out on his behalf, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said: “Nagasaki must be the last – we cannot allow any future use of nuclear weapons. The humanitarian consequences are too great. No more Nagasakis. No more Hiroshimas.”

The effects of the atomic bomb were instant and devastating. It destroyed a third of the city, killing thousands instantly and condemning more to death from radiation sickness.

Days later, Japan surrendered, ending World War Two, although the necessity of the two bombs has been debated ever since.

SG50: Singapore Celebrates 50 Years Since Becoming an Independent State

Singapore is celebrating 50 years since it became an independent state with nationwide events.

Tens of thousands of people are expected on August 9 to attend an outdoor parade, complete with flybys by the air force and a Singapore Airlines A380 airliner.

People are also being asked to join together in reciting the national pledge and singing the national anthem.

Singapore became an independent state when it was ejected from the Federation of Malaya amid social unrest.

In 50 years, the former British colony has transformed itself into one of the world’s wealthiest countries.

However, its critics say the rapid development has been accompanied by a strict control on free speech and politics.

The city state celebrates its independence day in style every year, but this year’s SG50 events are being billed as Singapore’s biggest ever celebration, with months of build-up in shops, schools, work places and in the media.

Singapore has declared a four-day weekend for the anniversary.Singapore 50th anniversary

There were long queues at the crossing points into Malaysia on Thursday and Friday evenings, as thousands of Singaporeans chose to go away for the weekend.

This year’s parade includes a special tribute to Lee Kuan Yew, who led Singapore into independence and was its prime minister until 1990.

Lee Kuan Yew, a much-respected leader in Singapore, died in March this year, prompting public mourning.

A recording of Lee Kuan Yew reading the Proclamation of Independence was played on radio and TV at 09:00 local time.

Speaking on the eve of the celebrations, PM Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Kuan Yew’s son, said: “At 50 years, as we stand at a high base camp, we look back and marvel how far we have come. We are grateful to those who made it happen.”

Key figures attending Sunday’s celebrations include Malaysian PM Najib Razak and Australian Deputy PM Warren Truss.

Despite achieving such goals as 90% home ownership and per capita GDP above $56,000, critics continue to point to the strict political controls.

Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has been in power for more than 50 years and the opposition hopes to make more inroads in elections that could be called in September.

The last election saw the PAP suffer its worst performance, though it still kept 80 of the 87 seats.

It will hope the boost of the anniversary and recognition of the legacy of Lee Kuan Yew will help it at the next election.

The National Day Parade usually features a military march past with fighter jet displays, large-scale performances by community groups, and a retelling of Singapore’s history. It ends with a massive firework display as the country recites the pledge and sings the national anthem.

In its early years, organizers used it to push social messages such as courtesy and diligence.

These days it’s a more sophisticated, glitzier affair, held by the shiny skyscrapers of Singapore’s Marina Bay.

Though the propaganda still gets heavy, Singaporeans love it anyway for its pomp and splendor. Tickets for the parade and its rehearsals run out every year.

Michael Brown’s Death: Ferguson Commemorates First Anniversary

People in Ferguson, Missouri, are commemorating the first anniversary of the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

On the eve of Sunday’s anniversary, several hundred marched through Ferguson in his honor, led by his father.

The shooting of Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson sparked demonstrations across America.

Along with killings of unarmed black men elsewhere in the US, it also fuelled a national protest movement against racial bias by the police.

Activists and religious figures from across the country are among those who have gathered this weekend in Ferguson, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri.

Saturday’s rally was peaceful and heavily policed.

Michael Brown’s father, also called Michael, said: “Some families got justice through Michael Brown’s legacy, and that helped them. But I’m still trying to get through.”Michael Brown Ferguson shooting anniversary

On Sunday, a march is planned from the site of the shooting to a local church.

Participants are expected to observe a four and a half minute silence to reflect the approximately four-and-a-half hours that Michael Brown’s body lay in the street.

The protests, which sometimes involved violent clashes between demonstrators and police, continued in Ferguson for weeks after the killing.

The protest movement gained fresh impetus in November, when a grand jury decided not to charge Darren Wilson.

Officer Darren Wilson, who argued that he was acting in self-defense, resigned from the police force in November.

In March, a justice department investigation found evidence of widespread racial bias in the Ferguson police department.

The report led to several high profile resignations, including the chief of police.

The “Black Lives Matter” movement that emerged in the wake of 18-year-old Michael Brown’s death has focused attention on the troubled relationship between black communities and police forces in a number of US states.

Vegemite Sales May Be Limited in Australia

Australia is proposing banning the sale of Vegemite in some communities because it is used to make alcohol.

The government says the popular yeast-based product is contributing to anti-social behavior in some remote communities.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion described the salty spread as a “precursor to misery”.Vegemite Australia

Nigel Scullion said Vegemite was being bought in bulk to make moonshine, sometimes being brewed in bathtubs.

In communities where alcohol is banned because of addiction problems, Nigel Scullion said Vegemite sales should also be restricted.

The minister added that in some cases children were failing to turn up to school because they were too hung over, and that Vegemite was an increasingly common factor in domestic violence cases.

Vegemite, which is something of an Australian culinary icon, started as a wartime substitute for Marmite.

John Michael Pio Roda: Chris Brown’s Promoter Accused of Fraud in Philippines

Chris Brown’s promoter John Michael Pio Roda has denied claims he defrauded an influential religious sect in the Philippines.

John Michael Pio Roda denied receiving over $1 million from the Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ) for a December 31 concert hosted by the sect for which Chris Brown failed to show up.

The promoter has been held at the capital’s Bureau of Immigration detention facility for nearly two weeks.

His legal counsel described his arrest as “Gestapo-like”.

Chris Brown failed to attend the show in question due to a lost passport.

Iglesia-linked local concert producers Maligaya Development Corp. have asked the justice department to file criminal fraud charges against Chris Brown and John Michael Pio Roda, saying they had been advanced their million-dollar fee.

John Michael Pio Roda’s lawyers said in a statement: “To hold Mr. Pio Roda accountable for the entire one million dollars… is not only without legal or factual basis but is a travesty of justice and a continued violation of human rights.”

They said John Michael Pio Roda, in fact, received $45,000 and that he and Chris Brown received another $578,750 in advance from another company.

Chris Brown was stopped from leaving the Philippines by the immigration bureau for three days in July over the row, having returned to play another show.

Although Chris Brown was later allowed to the leave the country, the fraud complaint hearings against the singer will proceed.

Typhoon Soudelor Makes Landfall in China

Typhoon Soudelor has hit south-eastern China prompting the evacuation of thousands of people and leaving millions of homes without power.

The powerful typhoon struck Fujian province late on Saturday night, bringing rains and gale force winds, state media said.

It earlier swept across Taiwan, leaving at least five people dead.

Although it has weakened, typhoon Soudelor is expected to continue moving across the region in the coming hours.

Fujian raised its typhoon alert to the highest level in anticipation of the storm, with at least 163,000 people evacuated to higher ground. There are reports of more evacuations in neighboring Zhejiang.

Rail services and flights have been cancelled in the path of the storm, and schools and offices closed.

Taiwan earlier on Saturday saw winds of more than 142mph, when Soudelor made landfall.

It ripped up trees and tore down billboards, and triggered a landslide in at least one village.

Among the victims were an 8-year-old girl and her mother who were swept out to sea.

A firefighter was reportedly killed after being hit by a drunk driver as he tried to move a fallen tree.

Typhoon Soudelor gradually lost its strength as it crossed the island, but was still packing winds of up to 89mph over the strait between Taiwan and China.

Frances Oldham Kelsey: Anti-Thalidomide Doctor Dies in Canada at 101

0

Anti-thalidomide hero Frances Oldham Kelsey has died at the age of 101.

The Canadian doctor played a central role in preventing the drug being distributed in the US.

Frances Oldham Kelsey refused to approve thalidomide while working for the FDA in the 1960s.

It was later found that thalidomide – prescribed to pregnant women to ease morning sickness – was causing thousands of babies to be born with missing limbs or organs. Many died.

Dr. Kelsey was lauded by citizens’ groups and was awarded honorary degrees.

She passed away in London, Ontario, on August 7, Canada’s CBC reported.

Her daughter Christine Kelsey was by her side.

Frances Oldham Kelsey is seen as a hero by many across the US for raising concerns about the safety of thalidomide, which is also known as Kevadon.

She continued to press the manufacturer – who complained about her attitude – for information.

The side-effects of the drug then became apparent as the battle of wills dragged on.

Frances Oldham Kelsey was given the award for distinguished federal civilian service by President John F. Kennedy.

Last month Frances Oldham Kelsey was appointed to the Order of Canada.

Erick Erickson Disinvites Donald Trump from Speaking at RedState Conference

Donald Trump has been disinvited from speaking at an activist conference hosted by conservative commentator Erick Erickson this weekend.

Erick Erickson cited disparaging remarks Donald Trump made hours earlier on CNN about Fox News Channel anchor Megyn Kelly.

In an interview with The Washington Post on August 7, Erick Erickson said Donald Trump had been scheduled to speak at his RedState gathering on August 8 at the College Football Hall of Fame.

However, Erick Erickson later told Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, about an hour before midnight that the GOP presidential candidate was no longer welcome.Donald Trump banned from RedState conference

Donald Trump’s campaign said in a statement that Erick Erickson’s decision was “another example of weakness through being politically correct. For all the people who were looking forward to Mr. Trump coming, we will miss you. Blame Erick Erickson, your weak and pathetic leader. We’ll now be doing another campaign stop at another location.”

His CNN interview Friday evening instantly drew controversy and criticism after he said Megyn Kelly, one of the moderators of Thursday’s Republican presidential debate in Cleveland, “had blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever”.

Erick Erickson, a Fox News regular and face of the popular RedState blog, has long been a foe congressional GOP leaders and an ally of conservative grass-roots organizers. He has also drawn criticism for saying impolitic things, once calling retired Supreme Court Justice David Souter an “[expletive] child molester” and First Lady Michelle Obama a “Marxist harpy”. He has since apologized for both comments.

Nick Gordon Accused of Giving Toxic Cocktail to Bobbi Kristina Brown

Bobbi Kristina Brown’s conservator Bedelia Hargrove has filed an amended lawsuit alleging that Nick Gordon gave Whitney Houston’s daughter a “toxic cocktail” and then put her face down in a tub of cold water.

The original suit was filed on June 24 in Fulton County Superior Court. It accused Nick Gordon of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and transferring money from her account into his own without authorization.

Bobbi Kristina Brown died on July 26 months after being found unresponsive in the tub of her Roswell home on January 31. She was 22.

She never regained consciousness and was moved to hospice care in June.

The amended complaint, filed on August 7, adds a wrongful death count. It alleges that around 6AM on January 31, Nick Gordon returned after “being out all-night on a cocaine and drinking binge”. It also says that Nick Gordon watched camera footage of Bobbi Kristina Brown and listened to her conversations.

Nick Gordon and Bobbi Kristina Brown allegedly began arguing in the kitchen. The dispute moved to the living and then upstairs to the master bedroom. Nick Gordon accused Bobbi Kristina Brown of cheating and called her a number of names, the lawsuit alleges. The argument lasted about 30 minutes and then “everything abruptly became quiet.”

Photo Instagram
Photo Instagram

The lawsuit then says that Nick Gordon “gave Bobbi Kristina a toxic cocktail rendering her unconscious and then put her face down in a tub of cold water causing her to suffer brain damage”.

According to the suit, Nick Gordon then came out of the bedroom wearing different clothes than he was wearing in his argument with Bobbi Kristina, got into bed, laid his head on a female guest’s ankle and said: “Now I want a pretty little white girl like you.”

About 15 minutes later, a guest at the home went in to check on Bobbi Kristina Brown and found her face down in a tub. A dust pan was at the bottom of the tub, the lawsuit states.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was unresponsive, unconscious with a swollen mouth and a tooth hanging loosely from her mouth.

Nick Gordon allegedly then came into the bathroom, let the water out of the tub and shouted: “Clean up, clean up.”

Others, including Nick Gordon, began efforts to resuscitate Bobbi Kristina Brown and called for medical personnel.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was transported to North Fulton Hospital, where she was revived. She was later placed in a medically-induced coma.

Later, Bobbi Kristina Brown was diagnosed with “global and irreversible brain damage” and the lawsuit says “as a result of [Nick Gordon’s] actions.”

On August 7, Bedelia Hargrove amended the complaint, saying: “I am deeply saddened by the recent death of Bobbi Kristina Brown. I extend my sincerest condolences to all of her family. Consistent with and to the letter of the civil action I initially filed on behalf of Bobbi Kristina, we will continue to pursue justice for her. I have filed today an amended complaint against Nicholas Gordon adding a count for wrongful death and for pain and suffering. We will leave no stone unturned in seeking justice for Bobbi Kristina Brown.”

The amended suit also goes into more details on an incident where Nick Gordon allegedly knocked out a tooth of Bobbi Kristina Brown. According to the lawsuit, days before January 31, several witnesses saw Nick Gordon punch Bobbi Kristina Brown as she sat on a couch. The lawsuit said that the impact was so great that the couch broke, knocking Bobbi Kristina to the floor. Nick Gordon continued to attack Bobbi Kristina on the floor, “hitting her in the face until she was bloody,” the suit said. It goes on to say that Nick Gordon then began kicking her in the side “to the point that she was on the floor screaming and curled up in a fetal position.”

Bobbi Kristina Brown’s tooth was knocked out in the attack, the lawsuit states.

Nick Gordon then allegedly dragged Bobbi Kristina up the stairs by her hair to the master bedroom, later telling witnesses: “I don’t do this often.”

The lawsuit asks for damages of at least $10 million each for the assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and conversion. It asks for an amount to be determined later for counts of quantum meruit/unjust enrichment and attorneys’ fees.

At this time, no criminal charges have been filed against Nick Gordon.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was buried in New Jersey next to her mother on August 3.

Kevin Ward’s Family Sues Tony Stewart for Wrongful Death

0

Kevin Ward Jr.’s family has filed a wrongful death suit on August 7 against NASCAR champion Tony Stewart over the killing of the 20-year-old driver during a race at an upstate New York dirt track.

Kevin Ward, 20, died after he got out of his car in the middle of a road race in New York in August 2014 and was hit by Tony Stewart’s car.

The Ward family has accused Tony Stewart of acting with “reckless and malicious intent and negligence” and is suing for unspecified damages.

Tony Stewart was not criminally charged.

In a statement, Kevin Ward’s parents Kevin and Pamela said: “Our hope is that this lawsuit will hold Tony Stewart responsible for killing our son and show him there are real consequences when someone recklessly takes another person’s life.”Tony Stewart Kevin Ward tragedy

A court hearing in September 2014 heard that Kevin Ward was under the influence of marijuana on the night of the accident.

Kevin Ward had “enough to impair judgment”, according to Ontario County District Attorney Michael Tantillo.

Tony Stewart, 43, a three-time NASCAR champion, had previously described the collision as “the toughest and most emotional experience” of his life.

They were racing alongside each other at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on August 9, when Kevin Ward’s car spun out of control.

He exited the vehicle and walked down the track, waving his arms at Tony Stewart in an apparent attempt to confront him.

The lawsuit claims Tony Stewart then revved his car’s engine, causing it to slide and strike the victim, throwing him into the air.

Kevin Ward’s father later told a local newspaper there was “no reason” for the death, given Tony Stewart’s experience and skills.

Police spent four weeks examining evidence in the case, including two videos, which they said “did not demonstrate aberrational driving by Tony Stewart”.

A New York grand jury declined to charge Tony Stewart on charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

James Holmes Sentenced to Life in Jail Without Parole

Aurora gunman James Holmes will serve life in jail without the possibility of parole for killing 12 people at a screening of a Batman film in 2012, a Colorado jury has ruled.

James Holmes’ defense team had argued that the former neuroscience graduate student, now 27, was insane at the time.

The jury agreed with prosecutors that James Holmes, though mentally ill, was responsible for his actions. But the jury was not unanimous on the death penalty.

That lack of agreement meant the jury accepted James Holmes would receive an automatic life sentence without parole.

One juror later told NBC News that two members of the jury were “on the fence” about the death penalty but that another was adamantly opposed on the grounds of mental illness.

“We ended our deliberations when one absolutely would not move,” the juror said.

The decision of the jury – a panel of nine women and three men – was revealed by Judge Carlos Samour in a courtroom in the city of Centennial on August 7.

As the verdict was read out, James Holmes’ mother Arlene leaned her head against her husband’s shoulder and began sobbing, the AP news agency reported.

Ashley Moser, whose 6-year-old daughter died in the attack and who was herself paralyzed, shook her head and then slowly leaned it against the wheelchair of another paralyzed victim.

District Attorney George Brauchler said: “I still think death is justice for what that guy did, but the system said otherwise. I honor that, and I’ll respect that outcome.”

During his three-month trial, James Holmes declined to testify in his own defense or to make a statement expressing his remorse.

The sentence is expected to be imposed formally at a later hearing.

In July, James Holmes was convicted on 165 counts of murder, attempted murder and an explosives charge over the shootings in Aurora, Colorado.

Families of victims had appeared to be conflicted over whether he should get the death penalty. Some were worried about the long appeal process that often follows a death sentence.

On July 20, 2012, James Holmes slipped into a midnight screening of Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises armed with an assault rifle, a shotgun and a pistol.

He threw smoke canisters and shot at people trying to escape.

Prosecutors argued the attack was clearly premeditated, with James Holmes planning and amassing weapons for months, as well as booby-trapping his apartment to kill anyone who tried to enter.

Typhoon Soudelor Hits Taiwan Leaving at Least 4 People Dead

Typhoon Soudelor has hit Taiwan with strong winds and heavy rain, leaving at least four people dead.

The powerful typhoon – with winds of more than 142mph – made landfall on the eastern coast early on Saturday and is now moving across the island.

Soudelor is ripping up trees and tearing down billboards, and triggered a landslide in at least one village.

About two million households have been left without electricity.Typhoon Soudelor Taiwan

Rail services and flights have been cancelled and all schools and offices closed.

According to Taiwan’s weather bureau, the typhoon is moving north-west, gradually losing its strength.

Among the victims were an eight-year-old girl and her mother who were swept out to sea.

Brain Training Game Improves Memory and Learning in Schizophrenia Patients

0

Researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed a brain-training game that could improve the daily lives of people with schizophrenia.

They tested the computer-based game on a small number of patients who played the game over four weeks found improvements in memory and learning.

This could help people to get back to work or studying after a diagnosis.

Schizophrenia is a mental health condition that causes a range of psychological symptoms, from behavior changes to hallucinations.

Many patients also experience cognition problems, which affect their memory and ability to function independently.

The memory game has a wizard theme with various levels of difficulty.Brain training game schizophrenia

It asks players to enter rooms, find items in boxes and remember where they put them, testing their so-called episodic memory.

Prof. Barbara Sahakian, from the department of psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and who researched the impact of the game, said patients who played it made significantly fewer errors in tests afterwards on their memory and brain functioning.

She said this was an indication that they were better prepared to function in the real world.

Prof. Barbara Sahakian said treating the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia was important, but slow progress was being made towards developing a drug treatment.

She added that the memory game could help where drugs had so far failed – with no side-effects.

The game is available as an app that anyone can play.

Although the results are promising, the research team said more research was needed on larger groups of patients to confirm the findings.

The researchers added that any memory training games had to be used in conjunction with medication and psychological therapies.

Spritam: World’s First 3D-Printed Drug Product Approved by FDA

0

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Spritam, the world’s first 3D-printed prescription drug.

The agency has previously approved medical devices – including prosthetics – that have been 3D printed.

Spritam was developed by Aprecia Pharmaceuticals to control seizures brought on by epilepsy.

Aprecia said that it planned to develop other medications using its 3D platform.

Printing the drugs allows layers of medication to be packaged more tightly in precise dosages.

A separate technology developed by the pharmaceutical company, known as ZipDose, makes high-dose medications easier to swallow.

Printing the drug meant it could package up to 1,000 milligrams into individual tablets.

The 3D-printed pill dissolves in the same manner as other oral medicines.

Being able to 3D print a tablet offers the potential to create bespoke drugs based on the specific needs of patients, rather than having a one product fits all approach, according to experts.

Medical institutions could adjust the dose for individual patients with just a simple tweak to the software before printing. Previously, such personalized medicine would have been extremely expensive to produce.

3D printing works by creating an object layer by layer. In the case of medicines, printers are adapted to produce pharmaceutical compounds rather than polymers which are more usually used.

Such methods are already proving very useful in healthcare with doctors using the system to create customized implants for patients with injuries or other conditions.

Dentists use 3D printers to create replica jaws and teeth as well as other dental implants.

Spritam will launch in Q1 2016, according to Aprecia.

Niloy Neel: Bangladeshi Secularist Blogger Murdered in Dhaka

Bangladeshi secularist blogger Niloy Neel has been killed by a gang armed with machetes in the capital Dhaka, police say.

Niloy Neel was attacked at his home in Dhaka’s Goran area.

He is the fourth secularist blogger to have been killed this year by suspected Islamist militants in Bangladesh.

Police said about six attackers had tricked their way into Niloy Neel’s home by saying they were looking to rent a flat.Niloy Neel murdered in Bangladesh

“Two of them then took him to a room and then slaughtered him there,” deputy police commissioner Muntashirul Islam said.

“His wife was in the flat but she was confined to another room.”

In May, secular blogger Ananta Bijoy Das was killed by masked men with machetes in Sylhet. He was said to have received death threats from Islamist extremists.

In March, Washiqur Rahman was hacked to death in Dhaka. Blogger Avijit Roy was also killed in Dhaka in February.

Bangladesh is officially secular but critics say the government is indifferent to attacks on bloggers by Islamist militants.

Two people have been arrested, but no-one charged, in connection with this year’s killings.

GOP Debate: Donald Trump Slams Fox Moderator Megyn Kelly

Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to slam the three moderators of the GOP’s first debate in Cleveland.

The Republican presidential candidate tweeted that Megyn Kelly and the other moderators were “not very good or professional”, and re-tweeted similar viewpoints from other Twitter users.

Megyn Kelly had challenged Donald trump about his views on women.

Donald Trump was one of ten candidates who took part in the first debate.

They had been selected from a crowded field of 17 candidates by Fox News on the basis of recent national polls.GOP Debate Donald Trump Slams Fox Moderator Megyn Kelly

Donald Trump stumbled on his past support for a national healthcare system but his most uncomfortable moment came when Megyn Kelly challenged him on his views about women.

“You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals,” she said.

The tycoon answered by joking that he only said that about actress Rosie O’Donnell and stating that political correctness was one of the country’s biggest problems.

“I don’t have time for total political correctness,” he said.

In the hours after the debate, Donald Trump took to Twitter to criticize the moderators.

He also took aim at Republican pollster Frank Luntz, whose focus group in a live broadcast after the debate gave an overwhelming thumbs-down to Donald Trump’s performance.

It was when Donald Trump said, during the debate, that he would not rule out running as an independent that the audience and other candidates became hostile.

An enraged Rand Paul said: “He buys and sells politicians of all stripes.”

One of the loudest rounds of applause of the evening was for Florida senator Marco Rubio when he mocked Hillary Clinton, who leads the Democratic field.

“First let me say, I think God has blessed us. He’s blessed the Republican Party with some very good candidates. The Democrats can’t even find one.”
