Starbucks Opens First Store in Italy

0

Starbucks has decided to open its first coffee shop in Italy.

The coffee chain promised to enter the birthplace of the espresso “with humility and respect”.

The first Starbucks will open in Milan early next year, in partnership with Italian developer Percassi.Starbucks Italy

President Antonio Percassi said: “We know that we are going to face a unique challenge with the opening of the first Starbucks store in Italy.”

Starbucks chain has 22,000 outlets in 67 countries.

Despite Italy’s long cultural and historical links with coffee – the espresso machine was invented in Italy – it is only the seventh-largest consumer of the beverage in Europe.

According to the European Coffee Federation, Finland consumed the most coffee in Europe in the year to May 2014 – the most recent figures available – followed by Austria and Sweden.

Otto Warmbier: American Student Arrested in North Korea Admits to Stealing Propaganda

0

American student Otto Warmbier, who was arrested in North Korea, has appeared on state media admitting to trying to steal a piece of propaganda from a hotel.

Otto Warmbier, a 21-year-old University of Virginia student, said he was asked by a US church to bring back the “trophy”.

He had been on a tourist trip to North Korea in January.

Otto Warmbier was arrested on 2 January as he was about to leave.

At the time, North Korea said the US government had “tolerated and manipulated” the student.

Otto Warmbier was charged with committing a “hostile act”.Otto Warmbier North Korea

At a news conference in Pyongyang, Otto Warmbier said a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church had promised to give him a used car worth $10,000 if he brought back a propaganda sign from his North Korea trip.

“I committed the crime of taking down a political slogan from the staff holding area of the Yanggakdo International Hotel,” North Korea’s KCNA news agency quoted Otto Warmbier as saying.

“The aim of my task was to harm the motivation and work ethic of the Korean people. This was a very foolish aim,” the student was quoted as saying.

Otto Warmbier said his crime was “very severe and pre-planned” and that he “never should have allowed myself to be lured by the US administration to commit a crime in this country”.

CNN, which received a copy of the video, said Otto Warmbier sobbed as he begged for forgiveness, saying he had made “the worst mistake of my life”.

It was not clear whether Otto Warmbier had made the statement voluntarily, but foreign detainees in North Korea have previously recanted confessions, saying they were made under pressure.

The US state department strongly advises Americans against travelling to North Korea, which sometimes uses the detention of foreigners as a means of exerting pressure on its adversaries.

Oscars 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio Takes Home His First Statue

Leonardo DiCaprio took home his first Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony for survival epic The Revenant, after six nominations.

The 41-year-old was named best actor at the 88th Academy Awards, with Brie Larson named best actress Oscar for Room.

Spotlight took home the best picture Oscar with Mad Max: Fury Road picking up the most awards of the night, with six accolades.

Mark Rylance won the best supporting actor Oscar, and Sam Smith won best original song.

The ceremony had been boycotted by some Hollywood figures protesting about the lack of ethnic diversity among this year’s nominees, as all 20 nominees in the best acting or supporting acting categories are white.

Host Chris Rock addressed the controversy head on as he launched the ceremony, and it was a theme that was returned to several times during the night.

Chris Rock commented he had “counted at least 15 black people” in the montage that opened the ceremony, before welcoming people to the “white People’s Choice awards”.

The Revenant won three of the 12 awards for which it was nominated. Alejandro Inarritu also won best director and Emmanuel Lubezki won his third Oscar for cinematography in a row, having won in 2015 for Birdman and 2014 for Gravity.Oscars 2016 winners

Leonardo DiCaprio received a standing ovation as he picked up his award, after five acting nominations and one nomination as producer of best picture nominee Wolf of Wall Street.

He thanked his director and co-star Tom Hardy for his “fierce talent on screen” and “friendship off screen” before campaigning for action to combat climate change, saying making The Revenant was “about man’s relationship to the natural world”.

He asked the audience to “support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who’ll be affected by this”.

It is 22 years since Leonardo DiCaprio was first nominated for an Academy Award, having been nominated for best supporting actor for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

Speaking to reporters after his win, Leonardo DiCaprio said: “I feel very honored, to share this has been an amazing experience, to sit there and talk about the film.

“I also got to talk about something I have been obsessed with – the environment and climate change – on a platform with hundreds of millions of people watching worldwide.”

As he accepted his award, Alejandro Inarritu said it was a “great opportunity to our generation to liberate ourselves from all prejudice”, saying the color of someone’s skin should be “as irrelevant as the length of their hair”.

It is the fourth Oscar for Alejandro Inarritu, having won best director, best original screenplay (as co-writer) and best picture (as producer) for Birdman in 2015.

Brie Larson had won praise for her role as abducted woman Ma in Room, based on the book by Emma Donoghue.

The actress thanked everyone involved in the film, including young co-star Jacob Tremblay, who plays her son.

Spotlight tells the true story of how investigative reporters at the Boston Globe uncovered child abuse by Catholic priests in Massachusetts.

Mark Rylance won his Oscar for Steven Spielberg’s Cold War film Bridge of Spies, in which he plays Rudolf Abel, the real-life Soviet intelligence officer who was arrested in 1950s New York and prosecuted as a spy.

Sam Smith, whose song was featured in Bond film SPECTRE, told the audience at LA’s Dolby Theater he could not breathe as he picked up his award and described his fellow nominees as “incredible”.

Alicia Vikander won the best supporting actress Oscar for The Danish Girl.

The Swedish-born actress thanked her co-star Eddie Redmayne and her parents, after winning her first Oscar, saying: “Eddie, thank you for being the best acting partner. I could never have done it without you. You raised my game.

“My mum and dad, thank you for giving me the belief that anything can happen – even though I would never have believed this.”

Amy Winehouse documentary Amy won the best documentary feature Oscar for British filmmakers Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees.

Composer Ennio Morricone won the Oscar for best original film score for The Hateful Eight – the first Academy Award the 87-year-old has won in his career.

Irish director Benjamin Cleary and Serena Armitage won the best live action short Oscar for Stutterer, about a man with a severe stammer.

The best foreign language film Oscar went to Hungarian film Son of Saul, telling the story of a Jewish man forced to work at a Nazi death camp who seeks a proper religious burial for a boy who he believes is his son.

Donald Trump Re-Tweets Mussolini Quote

Donald Trump has re-tweeted a quote attributed to Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini.

The tweet, created by a parody account and including Donald Trump’s handle, read: “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.”

The account is named @ilduce2016 after Benito Mussolini’s Italian title, the Leader.

Asked about the tweet in a TV interview, Donald Trump said he wanted “to be associated with interesting quotes”.

“Mussolini was Mussolini… What difference does it make?” the Republican presidential hopeful said when asked about the re-tweet on NBC’s Meet The Press.

“It got your attention, didn’t it?”

Benito Mussolini led Italy from 1922 until 1943, and led the coutry into war with the US in 1941.

The Gawker website said it had created “a Twitter bot that would post quotes from the writings and speeches of… Mussolini” at Donald Trump until he eventually re-tweeted one.Donald Trump Mussolini quote

Correspondents say this is the latest example of behavior which would have damaged any other candidate but which seems not to dent Donald Trump’s status as frontrunner for the GOP nomination for the presidential election later this year.

Donald Trump’s campaign has seen a number of surprising moments, including one of his previous rivals for the candidacy, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, endorsing him on February 26.

On February 28, Meg Whitman, CEO of Hewlett Packard and former finance co-chair of Chris Christie’s campaign, called Christie’s endorsement “an astonishing display of political opportunism”.

“Trump would take America on a dangerous journey. Christie knows all that and indicated as much many times publicly,” Meg Whitman said.

On the same day, Donald Trump appeared reluctant in a CNN interview to distance himself from an endorsement from David Duke, a former senior leader of the white supremacist group Ku Klux Klan. He told the interviewer he “didn’t know anything about David Duke”.

Later, however, he tweeted a video from an earlier press conference in which he appeared to recognize Duke’s name immediately and said: “David Duke endorsed me? OK, I disavow.”

An NBC poll put Donald Trump ahead in contests in Georgia and Tennessee due on March 1 as part of “Super Tuesday”, when 11 states will go to the polls to choose candidates.

Donald Trump’s rival Ted Cruz was ahead in his home state of Texas, while Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton had leads in all three states over Vermont senator Bernie Sanders.

Oscars 2016 Predictions: The Revenant and Leonardo DiCaprio Tipped as Winners

The Revenant and Leonardo DiCaprio are widely expected to win at this year’s Oscar ceremony.

If he wins, Leonardo DiCaprio will take home his first best actor Oscar statue.

The Revenant is seen as a strong contender for best picture and best director.

The 88th Annual Academy Awards ceremony gets under way at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles at 20:30 PST.

This year’s ceremony is being boycotted by some Hollywood figures who are protesting about the lack of ethnic diversity among the nominees.

All 20 nominees in the best acting or supporting acting categories are white.

Last week, Harvey Weinstein discouraged a boycott, reassuring those concerned that host Chris Rock would “annihilate” Hollywood in his opening monologue at the ceremony.Oscars 2016 predictions

The black comedian is known for dealing with racial issues in his routines and it is expected he will make reference to the recent controversy.

Earlier this month, director Spike Lee – who was one of the first figures to speak publicly about the lack of diversity – said the boycott had been vindicated by the response from organizers.

The Academy, which hands out the Oscar honors, announced it would double the number of women and ethnic minority members by 2020 after the protests.

The Oscars take place two weeks after Leonardo DiCaprio won a BAFTA for best actor – often a good indicator of Academy Awards success.

Leonardo DiCaprio, 41, has never won a best actor Oscar before, despite three previous nominations and relentless campaigning from fans.

He is up against Eddie Redmayne, Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon and Michael Fassbender for the statue.

The Revenant faces tough competition in the best picture category from The Big Short and Spotlight.

The Big Short was not initially seen as the favorite to triumph, but its chances were boosted after it won the top prize at the Producers Guild Awards (PGA).

The best picture winner at the PGAs has gone on win the same award at the Oscars every year for the past eight years.

Brie Larson is up for best actress alongside Saoirse Ronan, Charlotte Rampling, previous winners Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence – the latter has already picked up a Golden Globe for her performance in Joy.

Kate Winslet stands a strong chance of taking home best supporting actress after winning in the category both at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs.

She is up against Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rooney Mara, Alicia Vikander and Rachel McAdams.

The nominees for best supporting actor are Christian Bale, Mark Ruffalo, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance.

Glastonbury 2016: Muse Announced as Friday Headliner

Muse will headline this year’s Glastonbury Festival on Friday night on the Pyramid Stage.

The Friday slot makes Muse the first band to have headlined every night of the festival – they played on Saturday night in 2010, and Sunday in 2004.

Muse posted a video on Friday titled “Playing a little show at home…” showing clips from their previous Glastonbury performances.

The band won a Grammy for best rock album earlier this month.

Their seventh studio album, Drones, was released last June.

Coldplay revealed last week they would headline the Pyramid Stage on Sunday.

The Saturday headliners are yet to be announced – but Jeff Lynne’s ELO have been confirmed for the Sunday teatime slot.

The 2016 Glastonbury Festival runs from June 23 to 26.

Eagles Of Death Metal Forced to Cancel European Tour

Eagles Of Death Metal have been forced to cancel the rest of their European tour because frontman Jesse Hughes has torn a tendon in his finger.

They had already postponed the dates following the terrorist attack at the Le Bataclan theater in Paris.

Eighty-nine people were killed and 200 injured during the attack in November 2015.

The band returned to Paris earlier this month for an emotional performance for survivors at the Olympia.

The remaining eight dates in Europe have now had to be cancelled because of Jesse Hughes’ injury.

In a statement, posted on Facebook, EODM wrote: “Eagles of Death Metal has regrettably been forced to cancel the remainder of their European tour.

“Hughes has tried to play through the injury during the current tour but doctors have advised that the only way to properly heal it is to stop playing now, or risk further injury and having to cancel several weeks worth of shows.”

EODM are due to play Reading and Leeds festivals later in the summer and those gigs are not expected to be affected by Jesse Hughes’ injury.

Speaking about returning to Europe to finish the tour after the Paris attacks, he told the news agency AFP, Jesse Hughes said he thought it was his “sacred duty”.

Iran Elections 2016: Hassan Rouhani’s Reformists Win All Tehran Seats

Iran’s reformists have won a landslide victory in Tehran, in the first elections since the country signed a nuclear deal with world powers.

With 90% of the votes counted, the allies of reformist President Hassan Rouhani – the pro-Rouhani List of Hope – are set to take all 30 seats in Tehran.

The leading conservative candidate Gholamali Haddad-Adel is in 31st place.

Millions voted on February 26 to elect the 290-seat parliament as well as members of the Assembly of Experts.

The 88-member assembly appoints Iran’s Supreme Leader and might end up choosing a successor to Ayatollah Khamenei, who is 76 and has suffered ill-health.Iran elections results 2016

Early results gave former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a moderate Conservative, and Hassan Rouhani the most votes for the assembly, which is composed of mostly elder and senior clerics.

By contrast, the leading candidate of Islamic hardliners, Ayatollah Taghi Mesbah Yazdi, was hovering near the bottom of the list.

The parliamentary result in Tehran is significant because lawmakers from the capital usually determine the political direction of the house, analysts say.

However, reformists look to have done less well in constituencies outside the capital.

Hassan Rouhani said on February 27 that the election gave the government more credibility and clout.

“The competition is over. It’s time to open a new chapter in Iran’s economic development based on domestic abilities and international opportunities,” the official Irna news agency quoted the president as saying.

“The people showed their power once again and gave more credibility and strength to their elected government.”

Voting was extended three times as crowds reportedly flocked to polling stations. Turnout was more than 60%.

Reformists, who want better relations with the outside world and more freedoms at home, were hoping to gain influence in the conservative-dominated bodies.

However, of 12,000 people who registered as candidates, only half were allowed to stand, including just 200 moderates.

This was the first election to be held since last year’s deal between Iran and world powers over the country’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions.

Hillary Clinton Wins South Carolina Primary ahead of Super Tuesday

Hillary Clinton has won the South Carolina primary, the latest battleground in the race to be Democratic presidential nominee.

Her victory was widely expected but it gives her momentum ahead of the “Super Tuesday” primaries in 11 states next week.

“Tomorrow this campaign goes national,” Hillary Clinton told cheering supporters.

Rival Bernie Sanders has congratulated Hillary Clinton but said the campaign was just beginning.

With almost all the votes counted Hillary Clinton leads Bernie Sanders by an almost 50-point margin.Hillary Clinton South Carolina victory

Eight out of 10 black voters backed Hillary Clinton, exit polls suggested, a key section of the Democratic electorate.

It is Hillary Clinton’s third victory in four contests, after wins in Iowa and Nevada. She lost to Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire.

Eight years ago, Hillary Clinton lost the South Carolina primary overwhelmingly to then Senator Barack Obama.

It was a different story this time. Soon after polls closed Hillary Clinton told supporters: “You sent a message – in America when we stand together, there is no barrier too big to break.”

On the Republican side, Donald Trump leads a field that has dwindled to five from 12 a month ago.

Donald Trump won the Nevada caucus on February 24 by a wide margin – correspondents say he is beginning to look unstoppable.

In her victory speech, Hillary Clinton aimed a dig at the man tipped to be the Republican presidential candidate.

“Despite what you hear, we don’t need to make America great again. America has never stopped being great,” Hillary Clinton said, referencing Donald Trump’s campaign slogan.

Donald Trump’s closest challengers in the Republican field, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, sought to put him under pressure by releasing several years of their tax returns.

The billionaire says he will not release his until an audit has been completed; his rivals accuse him of holding back the information to hide exaggerations about his wealth.

Bernie Sanders, a veteran senator from Vermont, said he was now focusing on the Super Tuesday vote.

“In politics, on a given night, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Tonight we lost,” he told reporters in Minnesota, one of the states taking part.

“I congratulate Secretary Clinton on her very strong victory. Tuesday, over 800 delegates are at stake, and we intend to win many of them.”

There was some welcome news for Bernie Sanders after he was endorsed by Robert Reich, a former official in Bill Clinton’s presidential administration.

Robert Mugabe’s 92nd Birthday Party Criticized by Zimbabwe’s Opposition

Zimbabwe’s opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has criticized the ruling party for hosting lavish 92nd birthday celebrations for President Robert Mugabe while swathes of the population face food shortages.

The event reportedly cost almost $800,000.

Robert Mugabe has dominated Zimbabwe politics since independence from the UK in 1980.

The event, which was televised and featured schoolchildren reading poetry about the president, was held in the drought-stricken south eastern city of Masvingo.

Robert Mugabe, accompanied by his wife Grace, released 92 balloons to kick off the event at the Great Zimbabwe monument, with tens of thousands of people attending.

In a speech, Robert Mugabe attacked Western donors, and said he would not accept “rotten, filthy” aid if it was contingent on Zimbabwe accepting same-gender marriages, the government-owned newspaper the Herald reported.Robert Mugabe birthday party 2016

The MDC said the celebrations were “ill-conceived”.

Money used for the event should be used to import maize “to avert the impending starvation” in Masvingo and other areas, said Obert Gutu, a MDC spokesman.

The UN’s World Food Program said food production had fallen by half compared to a year earlier, because of severe drought.

The government said about three million people were food insecure and earlier this month it asked for nearly $1.6 billion in aid.

Obert Gutu said the ruling Zanu-PF “should be utterly ashamed” for hosting the costly celebration while “more than 90 %of Zimbabweans are wallowing in grinding poverty”.

However, a youth leader for the ruling Zanu-PF party defended the birthday celebrations.

“Money is not the issue here,” Pupurai Togarepi told the Reuters news agency.

“You cannot put a price on the contribution of President Mugabe to the history and development of this nation. All these things are worth more than money.”

Zimbabwe has faced severe economic challenges in recent years, which critics blame on policies including the seizures and redistribution of white-owned farms in 2000.

Hyper-inflation left its currency worthless and required the use of foreign currencies for most transactions.

Robert Mugabe has blamed Zimbabwe’s economic troubles on Western meddling.

Dow Chemical Agrees to Pay $835 Million for Price Fixing Scam

0

Dow Chemical agreed to pay $835 million to settle a class action lawsuit after determining the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia made victory less likely.

The payment is less than the $1.06 billion a court in Kansas ordered it to pay in 2013.

Dow Chemical was hoping the Supreme Court would overturn the ruling, but the death of Justice Antonin Scalia left it evenly split between conservatives and liberals.Dow Chemical settlement

A split decision in the Supreme Court reverts to the lower court’s ruling.

Dow Chemical said in a statement that it settled because of the “increased likelihood for unfavorable outcomes”.

The company said it still believed the original verdict was “fundamentally flawed,” but felt settling was in the best interest of shareholders.

In 2015, Dow Chemical announced plans to merge with competitor DuPont in a $130 billion deal.

US Economic Growth Revised Upwards for Q4 2015

The US growth rate has been revised upwards for Q4 of 2015, according to the latest official figures.

The economy grew at an annualized pace of 1% in Q4, compared with an initial estimate of 0.7%.

Most economists had taken a more pessimistic view, expecting the figure would be revised downwards.

However, businesses bought more stock than previously estimated, which meant inventory levels were $13 billion higher.US economic growth 2015

The downside is that next month’s growth figures may be lower than expected if businesses do get round to cutting back on inventory spending.

Some forecasts put the growth rate for the first three months of 2016 as high as 2.5%.

Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of US economic activity, rose at a 2% pace in Q4, rather than the 2.2% rate previously estimated.

Cheap oil and lower heating bills from a mild winter has helped consumer confidence.

The chair of the Federal Reserve, Janet Yellen has indicated that rates could rise gradually through the year if the economy grows strongly enough.

However, many economists believe US growth will be held back by slowing economies round the world from China to Brazil, pushing down the prices of raw materials and leading to deflation.

A Reuters survey this month estimated that the top 30 global oil companies had cut their budgets by an average of 40%.

Syrian Truce Comes into Effect after Five Years of Civil War

A Syrian truce has come into effect after five years of civil war.

The “cessation of hostilities” began at midnight on February 27 with early reports saying front lines were silent.

UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said fighting had “calmed down” but one breach was being investigated.

In the run-up to the deadline, President Barack Obama warned the Syrian government and its ally Russia “the world will be watching”.

The truce involves government and rebel forces, but not ISIS or the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.

More than 250,000 Syrians have been killed in Syria’s civil war and millions more have been forced from their homes.

A few hours after the deadline passed, a car bomb killed two people outside the government-held town of Salamiyeh, near Hama, Syrian state media reported. It is not clear who carried out the attack.

Monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said while some gunfire was heard in the northern city of Aleppo as the deadline passed, elsewhere it was quiet.Syria truce 2016

Staffan de Mistura has said that peace talks will resume on 7 March if the truce “largely holds”, adding that he had no doubt there would be “no shortage of attempts to undermine this process”.

Russia said it would continue to bomb militant targets. Russian jets were reported to have intensified attacks on Syrian rebel positions on February 26.

In the run-up to the truce, heavy attacks around Damascus and Aleppo were blamed on Russian airstrikes, but denied by Moscow.

The cessation was brokered by the US and Russia, and is backed by a UN resolution. Previous talks in Geneva collapsed in early February after making no progress.

One of the key aims of the cessation is to allow desperately needed aid to reach people trapped in besieged areas.

The UN resolution names about 30 areas in dire need of aid, including eastern and western rural Aleppo and the eastern city of Deir al-Zour, which is under siege by ISIS jihadists.

Almost 100 rebel factions have agreed to respect the truce, Syrian opposition umbrella group the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) said.

However, the HNC warned the Syrian government and its allies not to use the “proposed text to continue the hostile operations against the opposition factions under the excuse of fighting terrorism”.

President Vladimir Putin says the Russian forces are targeting ISIS, Nusra Front and other extremist groups designated as legitimate targets by the UN Security Council.

However, Russia is widely accused of also attacking more moderate rebel groups fighting President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of the Kremlin.

Is Your Business Looking Shabby? Here’s How to Change It

0

The way your business looks matters a great deal. If it looks less than perfect, it could even affect your overall sales. Here’s how to change things for the better.

Replace Old Doors

One of the first things that people will see when they arrive at your business premises is the door. They will open it when they walk in. So, if it’s looking old and shabby, then this sets a pretty poor tone for the rest of the place. This is something that you should think about changing. It’s all about setting things right from the get-go. If people are already thinking negative things about the business as they walk through the door, things are going to have to improve from there.

Clean Up

Sometimes, something as simple as having a clean up of your property is enough to make a huge difference. Start with the outside of the premises. Are there overflowing bins in view as clients and customers arrive? If so, there shouldn’t be. Unattractive things like that should be removed to the back of the property out of side to the general public. It seems like an obvious thing to say, but many people don’t think about things like this. You should also make sure that any litter is picked up.

Add a Driveway

If you don’t have a proper driveway that leads up to the entrance of your business, you should create one. Having somewhere that clients and customers can drive up and park near your business is important. It sets the right tone because it makes the place seem more refined and professional. It doesn’t cost much money to do this kind of work either. Get in touch with an excavator hire company and get the tools you need to dig up the old land. You can then get it tarmacked and create the drive.

Create a New Logo and Sign

When was the last time that you thought about changing the sign that hangs over your front door? If you haven’t done anything about it for years, it is probably starting to look a little past its best by now. A fading and cracked or damaged sign does not impress people when they arrive at your premises. It’s the kind of thing that should be changed as soon as possible. And, while you’re at it, why not think about having the logo of the business redesigned too? Logos can appear out of date before long.

Put Up a New Fence

The great thing about adding a fence to your property is that it makes the place looked nice, and it also adds some extra security. You want your business to be secure, and you want to improve the appearance of your business, so why not go for it? It’s a sensible move. It can add a bit of class to the premises as well. It shows that you care about what you’re doing and that you want to protect it. Rather than it just being a shabby site that your business happens to operate from.

4 Types Of Insurance You Must Have

0

Today, we’re going to talk about a crucial part of your personal finances; insurance. More specifically, we’re looking at four types of insurance you need to have:

car-insurance

(Picture via Flickr: https://flic.kr/p/snzzRc)

Car Insurance

This is perhaps the most well-known and talked about insurance. If you ask someone to name an insurance type, the majority will say car insurance. But, what is it and why do you need it? Basically, it insures your car against different kinds of damage. This means that if you get into an accident, your insurance provider will pay for any repairs that are needed. Obviously, this can save you a lot of money, and I mean a lot. If your car is severely damaged, you can get it fixed through your provider and save tonnes of money. Without insurance, you might have had to fork out lots of money on a new car. Plus, it’s illegal to drive a motor vehicle without it being insured. So, you have to make sure you’ve got it for your car. There are tonnes of providers out there that will give you quotes depending on a few factors. Age, gender, driving experience, and the car you drive can all have a bearing.

Home Insurance

Another type of insurance that you must have is all to do with your home. Yes, home insurance is essential for anyone that owns property. With it, you’ll get the option to protect two aspects of your house. You can get accidental damage cover and contents cover. The first of which will protect you if your home gets damaged for whatever reason. Maybe a storm damaged your roof, or someone broke your window. Either way, if your home insurance covers this, you’ll have the repairs paid for. Contents cover will protect you if your house ever gets burgled. If someone steals items from your house, you’ll be covered. Similarly, home insurances will protect your possessions if they get damaged in floods, etc. Some companies will give you replacement items free of charge. If you own a property, then you can’t forget about home insurance, trust me.

Life Insurance

Life insurance is something that no one likes to think about, but it’s very important. You see, we get life insurance to cover our family in case we die. As you can tell, this is a very sensitive topic, which is why people don’t like thinking about it. No one wants to talk about death, but sometimes you have to. With life insurance, your family will get money paid to them, if you pass away. This means they’re going to be financially stable when you’re gone. You may be the primary money maker in your house, so if you’re not there to earn money, they could be in trouble. Thankfully, life insurance ensures that your family finances are not ruined by your death. Types of life insurance can vary, some come with critical illness cover, others have certain requirements. Although you don’t like to think about it, death is inevitable. It makes sense to give your family some financial gain when you pass away.

Health insurance

Health Insurance

One of the most important things in life is your health. If you aren’t healthy, you need to get treatment and see a doctor. Doctors can help you get better and back to feeling your best. When you have health insurance, seeing medical professions is a lot easier. In fact, some institutions only accept people that have insurance. What health insurance does is protect your health and wellbeing. It can cover the cost of doctors appointments, operations, physical therapy, etc. Without it, it’s very hard to find reliable, high level, medical care. Sure, there are some public options for people without insurance. However, the waiting times for appointments are insane, let alone the wait for surgeries. Without health insurance, you could be waiting for surgery for up to two years! But, if you have it, you can get the surgery covered by your insurer and make sure you’re seen to as soon as possible. It’s highly recommended for everyone, particularly those with a family.

Insurance is a very important part of your financial life. It can protect you from so many things and ensure you aren’t paying loads of money for different stuff. Imagine if you had none of the insurance above. Think about how much money you’d have to pay to cover things like car breakdowns, medical bills, and so on. Chris Christie Endorses Donald Trump for President

Chris Christie has made a surprise announcement saying that he is endorsing Donald Trump for president.

The New Jersey governor and former Republican candidate dropped out of the 2016 presidential race after a lacklustre showing in polls and state races.

During a press conference, Chris Christie said: “I’m happy to be on the Trump team and I look forward to working with him.”

The New Jersey governor said junior senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, both running for president, were “unprepared” for the job.

There is “no question” that Donald Trump will turn around Washington, Chris Christie continued, and keep Democratic candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from winning the White House.

Donald Trump is leading in many state polls and has already won three consecutive state contests in New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, despite never having worked in politics.

He shouldered some criticism from Marc Rubio and Ted Cruz at a Republican debate on February 25 but it is not yet clear whether this has hurt his popularity.

“He is rewriting the playbook of American politics because he’s providing strong leadership that is not dependent upon the status quo,” Chris Christie said of Donald Trump.

“I will lend my support between now and November in every way that I can for Donald, to help to make this campaign an even better campaign than it’s already been.”

Florida Senator Marco Rubio continued to assail Donald Trump the morning after the debate.

He told CBS: “A con artist is about to take over the Republican Party and the conservative movement, and we have to put a stop to it.”

Gianni Infantino Elected FIFA President

0

Gianni Infantino has been elected as the ninth president of world soccer’s governing body FIFA.

The UEFA secretary general polled 115 votes, 27 more than closest rival Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein (4 votes) and Jerome Champagne (0) were third and fourth respectively.

Sepp Blatter, who had led FIFA since 1998, stood down last year and was later suspended from football for six years for breaching ethics guidelines.

Gianni Infantino is a 45-year-old lawyer from Brig in the Valais region of Switzerland, less than six miles from Sepp Blatter’s home town of Visp.Gianni Infantino FIFA president

He entered the presidential race when it became clear that UEFA President Michael Platini could not stand.

“I will work tirelessly to bring football back to FIFA and FIFA back to football,” Gianni Infantino said.

“This is what we want to do.”

He added: “I feel a lot of emotion and have not realized yet what has happened today.

“It is still very fresh and it’s been a long and exciting journey and I probably need some time to chill out and see what has happened.”

The election was due to be fought between five candidates, but South African Tokyo Sexwale withdrew before voting began in Zurich.

The first round of voting failed to determine an outright winner, though Gianni Infantino led with 88, three more than pre-vote favorite Sheikh Salman.

A simple majority of more than 50% – 104 of 207 available votes – was sufficient for victory in round two.

An emotional Gianni Infantino told delegates that together they would “restore the image of FIFA and the respect of FIFA”.

He added: “I want to work with all of you together in order to restore and rebuild a new era of FIFA where we can put again football at the centre of the stage.

“FIFA has gone through sad times, moments of crisis, but those times are over. We need to implement the reform and implement good governance and transparency. We also need to have respect.

“We’re going to win back this respect through hard work, commitment and we’re going to make sure we can finally focus on this wonderful game.”

To help the new president tackle the crisis that has enveloped FIFA, key reforms were passed to help make it a more transparent and accountable organization.

All salaries of FIFA officials will be disclosed, while a limit of four years has been placed on a president’s term.

A new council to replace the current executive committee has also been introduced, featuring a female representative from each confederation.

Hesston Shooting: Three Killed and 14 Injured at Excel Industries

0

Three people have been shot dead and other 14 injured after a gunman opened fire at a lawnmower factory in Hesston, Kansas, and nearby.

The gunman, an employee at the factory, was shot dead, and terrorism is not suspected, police say.

Ten of the wounded were critically injured in the shootings.

The attack comes less than a week after a man was charged with killing six people and wounding two others during a shooting rampage in Michigan.Hesston shooting Excel Industries

A number of mass shootings in the US have elevated gun control as a campaign issue in this year’s presidential election.

Local police say the gunman, named as 38-year-old Cedric Ford, began shooting at around 5pm local time in the town of Newton.

Cedric Ford shot a truck driver in the shoulder, and another man in the leg as he drove towards the Excel Industries site where he worked.

The gunman then opened fire in the car park, killing one person, before killing two more people inside the factory site.

Factory employee Martin Espinoza described how the gunman, a colleague who he said usually had a calm demeanor, attempted to shoot him.

The gunman pointed his weapon at Martin Espinoza and pulled the trigger, but the weapon was empty. Martin Espinoza then ran away as the gunman took out a second gun.

Los Angeles Methane Leak Biggest in US History

According to a research published in Science, the natural gas leak near Los Angeles was the biggest in US history.

The Aliso Canyon blowout vented almost 100,000 tons of methane into the atmosphere before it was plugged.

The impact on the climate is said to be the equivalent of the annual emissions of half a million cars.

According to University of California researchers, the Los Angeles methane leak had a far bigger warming effect than the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

First detected on October 23, the leak came from one of the 115 wells connected to a massive underground natural gas storage facility, the fifth largest in the US.Los Angeles methane leak

Seven unsuccessful attempts were made to shut down the billowing plumes of methane and ethane by the owners, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas).

Concerns over the impacts of the spewing gas eventually led to more than 11,000 nearby residents being evacuated as California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in the area.

The blowout pushed enough of the gas into air every day to fill a balloon the size of a football stadium.

At its peak, the flow doubled the rate of methane emissions from the entire Los Angeles basin.

The leak was permanently sealed on February 18. By then almost 100,000 tonnes of methane had poured into the atmosphere.

The scientific analysis was based on 13 research flights that captured air samples in and around the methane plume as well as from the ground. The initial aircraft readings were so high that the researchers rechecked their monitoring equipment for errors.

The amount of methane entering the atmosphere from the leaking well makes it the largest of its kind recorded in the US. A bigger escape of gas occurred in Texas in 2004 but as most the methane burned off in a fire that followed an explosion, the impact on the climate was muted.

According to researchers, the blowout will have a significant impact on California’s ability to meet its greenhouse gas emissions targets this year.

Methane is short-lived atmospheric chemical but is highly potent as a warming gas, with an effect 25 times higher than CO2 over a 100 year time period.

The analysis found above normal levels of several potentially harmful chemicals that came from the natural gas leak. These included benzene, toluene and xylenes which have been linked to health impacts from long term exposure.

The authors believe there are important lessons to be learned from the leak – particularly the need to monitor oil and gas facilities more carefully.

They say that there has been little co-ordinated oversight of the biggest oil and gas leaks in recent years. They point to Aliso Canyon, the BP spill and the Total Elgin rig blowout in the North Sea, as examples where luck more than intent ensured the impacts on the environment were monitored.

In the case of Aliso Canyon, the surveying aircraft was working on another project searching for pipeline problems, when the scientists were asked to overfly the leaking well.

Sharp Shares Fall 11% after Foxconn Takeover Delay

0

Sharp’s shares lost 11% in Tokyo amid reports that the delay in its takeover by Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn was due to previously undisclosed losses.

The Japanese tech giant announced the $4.3 billion deal on February 25.

However, Foxconn later said it would not sign the deal until it clarified “new information” Sharp had provided, without giving any specifics.

Several unconfirmed reports quoting unnamed sources have emerged saying that the “new information” provided at the last minute had to do with huge losses on Sharp’s balance sheet.

Reuters quoted sources as saying the liabilities amounted to “hundreds of billions of yen”, while the Nikkei Asian Review put the figure at 350 billion yen ($3.1 billion).

Nikkei said Sharp had sent Foxconn documents listing the details of these losses, including severance pay, breach-of-contract penalties, and repayments of government funds.

However, Bloomberg reported that the liabilities could also end up being much lower if not all of them are incurred.

Sharp is one of Japan’s oldest tech companies, but it has been saddled with heavy debts and has faced two big bailouts in recent years. In 2012 it came close to bankruptcy.

It was founded in 1912 and has pioneered developments in television engineering.

Japanese officials had been reluctant to let Sharp be taken over by a foreign company, particularly because of its breakthroughs in display panel technology.

Iran Elections 2016: Voters Choose New Parliament and Assembly of Experts

Iran is voting in two key elections – the first since a deal with world powers over its nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions.

Iranian voters are choosing a new parliament and Assembly of Experts, a clerical body that appoints the Supreme Leader.

Reformists are hoping to increase their influence in both institutions, which have been dominated by conservatives.

The outcome could affect reformist President Hassan Rouhani’s chances of re-election in 2017.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for a big turnout to “disappoint our enemies”.

“Whoever likes Iran and its dignity, greatness and glory should vote. Iran has enemies. They are eyeing us greedily… People should be observant and vote with open eyes and should vote wisely,” he said after casting his vote.Iran elections 2016

The parliamentary elections are to choose 290 lawmakers for four-year terms. About 12,000 potential candidates registered, but only half were cleared to stand by the Guardian Council, a key body loyal to the Supreme Leader. Only about 200 moderate candidates got through the vetting process.

Voters will also select 88 clerics to the Assembly of Experts, who serve eight-year terms.

Members of the new Assembly might end up choosing the successor to Ayatollah Khamenei, who is 76 and has suffered ill-health.

Polls opened at 08:00 and close at 18:00, with some 55 million people eligible to vote.

However, officials say polling stations could stay open longer if there are queues and more time is needed.

Results for the Assembly of Experts are expected over the weekend. The results of the parliamentary election could take longer and it is likely to go to a second round in April as candidates need 25% of the vote to win outright.

Republican Debate: Donald Trump Attacked by Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have unleashed a barrage of attacks on front-runner Donald Trump in the last Republican debate before Super Tuesday.

They sought to blunt Donald Trump’s momentum after he won three of the first four contests.

Immigration, healthcare and outreach to Latino voters dominated the debate.

Like previous occasions, the debate quickly disintegrated into long periods of shouting and personal insults.GOP debate February 25

Donald Trump has been extremely popular despite his controversial comments about deporting millions of undocumented workers and banning Muslims from travelling to the US.

On March 1, known as Super Tuesday, millions of voters in 11 states will cast ballots.

A quarter of the total numbers of delegates needed to secure the GOP nomination will be up for grabs.

Donald Trump is currently leading in 10 out of 11 states holding contests on Super Tuesday.

He has 82 Republican delegates, Ted Cruz has 17 and Marco Rubio has 16. To become the GOP’s nominee, a candidate has to have 1,237 total state delegates.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will compete for 1,004 delegates on Super Tuesday. So far, Hillary Clinton has 505 delegates and Bernie Sanders has 71.

Each party formally announces its presidential candidate at conventions in July, four months before the presidential election.
