AWS’ S3 Failure Knocks Websites Offline Temporarily

Several high-profile websites and services sites, such as Quora, a Q&A forum, and Trello, were knocked offline by a failure at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS allows companies to rent cloud servers in order to host data on the internet without needing to invest in their own infrastructure.

On February 28, the sites which help people monitor productivity, went down.

After several hours, Amazon said it had rectified the problem.

It did not make public the reason behind the disruption.

As well as sites that went down, other services, such as workplace collaboration tool Slack, also lost some key functionality.

Specifically, it was AWS’s S3 – which stands for Simple Storage Service – that was affected.

To varying degrees it serves around 150,000 sites and services around the world, mostly in the US.

AWS is used by some of the web’s most recognizable and powerful names including Netflix, Spotify and Airbnb. While none of those services went offline on February 28, users did report performance issues and slowdown.

US government services such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) were also affected.

Downtime is a critical issue for any cloud service. Amazon competes with Google, Microsoft and others for what is an increasingly lucrative line of business for the web giants.

Donald Trump Believes Barack Obama Is Behind Protests and Security Leaks

President Donald Trump has told Fox News he believes former President Barack Obama is behind a wave of protests against Republican lawmakers, and national security leaks.

He said: “I think President Obama’s behind it because his people are certainly behind it”, but added: “I also think it’s just politics.”

President Trump offered no evidence for his claims and his predecessor in the White House has not commented.

He also spoke about his budget plans and other issues.

The president’s interview was broadcast hours before he is due to give his first address to a joint session of Congress.

In the speech he is expected to set out in greater detail his plans to cut spending and boost the economy.

Donald Trump has said his proposal to increase the defense budget by $54 billion would be paid for by a “revved up economy”.

The foreign aid purse and the environmental department face a squeeze to pay for it, but analysts are doubtful the spending promises can be kept without increasing the deficit.

President Trump said he would get “more product for our buck” in terms of buying military hardware and would ask for a “form of reimbursement” from countries making use of the US military.

In the Fox News interview, President Trump was asked about the protests faced by some Republican politicians at town hall meetings across the country.

The president said he was certain Obama loyalists were behind both those protests and White House leaks.

“In terms of him being behind things, that’s politics. And it will probably continue,” Donald Trump added.

The president was asked for more detail on how he would find the money for the 10% increase in military spending he has proposed for 2018. Proposed cuts elsewhere are unlikely to cover the proposed increase.

The White House sent Donald Trump’s 2018 budget blueprint, which begins on October 1, to federal agencies on February 27.

The agencies will then review the plan and propose changes to the cuts as the White House prepares for negotiations with Congress.

The Republican-controlled Congress must approve any federal spending.

Donald Trump’s plan is expected to face a backlash from Democrats and some Republicans over the planned cuts to domestic programs.

Photos of Kellyanne Conway Putting her Shoes on Oval Office Couch Spark Social Media Storm

0

Several pictures of Kellyanne Conway kneeling on the couch in the Oval Office with her shoes on have sparked a social media storm.

The senior White House adviser is seen clutching her phone as President Donald Trump poses with leaders of historically black colleges and universities.

Twitter users accused Kellyanne Conway of “disrespect”.

She was taking her own photos at the time.

One user tweeted on the social media site: “That’s no way to act in the People’s Oval Office.”

“Think of all the great people who sat on that couch and put your feet down,” wrote another.

The pictures led some to question Kellyanne Conway’s body language, suggesting that she was not taking the meeting on February 27 seriously.

Others downplayed the excitement, indicating that it was all a bit of a storm in a teacup.

The images of Kellyanne Conway also drew comparisons to a photograph taken in 2013 showing then President Barack Obama with a foot up on the Oval Office desk.

President Trump was meeting leaders of historically black colleges and universities to discuss his administration’s support for the schools, including contracts and grants.

Kellyanne Conway is no stranger to controversy.

Earlier this month she was criticized after citing a “massacre” which never happened while defending Donald Trump’s controversial immigration ban.

Kellyanne Conway’s recent promotion of products linked to Ivanka Trump led to calls for an investigation into whether she had violated ethics rules.

Rio Carnival 2017: Twelve Injured as Float Collapses in Sambadrome

Twelve people were injured when a float collapsed in Rio de Janeiro’s Sambadrome, the venue where the samba schools hold their annual carnival parade.

On February 28, a walkway on top of the float on which dancers were standing toppled, sending them tumbling.

The incident came a day after twenty people were injured at the Sambadrome when a float crushed them against a fence.

Police are investigating both incidents.

The float represented Bourbon Street in New Orleans and members of the samba school were dancing on walkways made to look like balconies when the upper walkway gave way.

The parade was halted for 25 minutes as the emergency services took the injured to hospital.

The float belonged to Unidos da Tijuca samba school.

The school’s director, Aiton Freitas, said he did not know what had gone wrong.

Aiton Freitas said the float had been tested three times a week with more weight than it was carrying during the parade.

He told journalists: “We are even more shocked than you all are.

“I don’t know what is happening, but Rio’s Carnival is not being blessed this year.”

No Money To Start A Business? No Problem!

0

Starting a business takes a lot of money, right? Not necessarily. Having the capital to start a business is one of the more prominent alternative facts you will find. Yes, it is better to have more money, but it isn’t always the deciding factor with regards to your success. In fact, plenty of businesses succeeds without having the money they need. How? They did it by utilizing these tips. Enjoy!

Resell Products

There is no need to waste money on manufacturing new and unique products. Instead, you can just resell old products and make a killing. It sounds like a bad idea, or like it won’t work, but it is very effective. The important thing to remember with this tactic is the fashion of business. Products go through cycles, and when they come back into fashion, they are very much in demand. A quick look around the local flea market could be the difference between success and failure. Buy anything you think you can sell because there is always someone who is interested.

Sell Services

Selling your services is one of the cheapest ways to start a business. A service has a very little cost attached, unlike making and selling products. For example, there is no need for staff or machinery to manufacture the goods. The service will have some cost involved, but it is minimal and won’t affect your lack of capital. With the help of the internet, it is easy to sell them, too. Do you have skills in literacy or math, for example? If you do, you can tutor people online. Tutors make a lot of money per hour which is why it is a good business idea. Tutoring is one method, but there are plenty more at your disposal.

Loan Agreement

File

Secure A Loan

As you can see, it is hard to start a business without any costs. That means you will need some capital, at least to get on your feet, which is why you need a loan. Regardless of the type of loan, you get the amount of money you need, and you get it quickly. And, as any informational guide will point out, you don’t even need to have squeaky clean finances. The positives are pretty huge and could help you start a business which turns into a leader in the industry. Of course, you have to look out for the cons because they can harm your future. As long as you understand the terms of the loan, though, you should be fine.

Haggle

Everything you need to start a business comes at a cost. However, you don’t have to accept the cost as iron clad because you can barter down the price. Westerners don’t like to barter, but it is time to let go of your inhibitions. After all, ‘no’ is the worst someone can say. In that case, you go to the next person and ask them for a discount until someone says ‘yes.’ Haggling is simple as well as effective, and it will save you a fortune.

Money might make the world spin, but the same doesn’t have to apply to business.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Who are Doan Thi Huong and Siti Aisyah?

0

The two women implicated in the killing of Kim Jong-nam, the estranged brother of North Korea’s leader, are Doan Thi Huong and Siti Aisyah.

Little is known about Doan Thi Huong and Siti Aisyah except that they had left their homes in different parts of Asia and were trying to make a living in Malaysia.

According to Malaysian police officials, Doan Thi Huong, a 28-year-old from Vietnam, is an “entertainment outlet employee” while Siti Aisyah, a 25-year-old from Indonesia, was working in a hotel massage parlor.

Doan Thi Huong’s Facebook page, in which she posted under the name Ruby Ruby, showed her posing in a number of selfies and glamour shots. There are rumors she once auditioned for Vietnam’s version of Pop Idol.

Her family said she left her home village in north Vietnam at 17 to study in the capital Hanoi, and had rarely returned home since. They said they were surprised to learn she was in Malaysia.

Her stepmother said that the family was fed up with all the attention they had received, but were grateful for the support of their neighbors.

Siti Aisyah was arrested for the killing along with her 26-year-old Malaysian boyfriend, who was later released on bail.

She told the Indonesian embassy officials that she thought she was taking part in a reality TV show, and had been paid 400 Malaysian ringgit ($90) to smear what she thought was baby oil on to Kim Jong-nam’s face.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Two Women to Be Charged with Murder

Siti Aisyah was out partying with her friends the night before the killing. A friend, who spoke anonymously, said they were celebrating her birthday, which had been the day before. Film footage purportedly from the evening shows her talking with friends about becoming an internet star.

Other suspects in Kim Jong-nam’s assassination are:

Ri Jong-chol, 47, is a North Korean who has lived in Malaysia for the last three years. He is in Malaysian detention.

The Malaysian boyfriend of Siti Aisyah, Muhammad Farid Jalaluddin, was arrested but police said he would be released on bail.

Hyon Kwang Song, 44, second secretary at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur is being sought by police. He is believed to be in the embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Kim Uk-il, 37, is a staff member of North Korea’s state airline Air Koryo, and is also believed to still be in Malaysia.

Ri Ju-u, 30, a North Korean also known as “James”, has been identified by the women as the man who recruited them.

Ri Ji-hyon, 33, a North Korean, is believed to have fled to Pyongyang.

Hong Song-hac, 34, a North Korean, is believed to have fled to Pyongyang.

O Jong-gil, 55, a North Korean, is believed to have fled to Pyongyang.

Ri Jae-nam, 57, a North Korean, is believed to have fled to Pyongyang.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Two Women to Be Charged with Murder

0

Two women involved in the assassination of Kim Jong-nam are to be charged with murder on March 1, Malaysia’s prosecutor says.

Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali said the Indonesian and Vietnamese suspects would be formally charged and could face death if convicted.

They allegedly smeared a deadly chemical over Kim Jong-nam’s face at a Malaysia airport earlier this month.

The women have said they thought they were taking part in a TV prank.

“They will be charged in court under Section 302 of the penal code,” the attorney general said, which is a murder charge with a mandatory death sentence if found guilty.

Mohamed Apandi Ali said no decision had yet been taken on whether to charge a North Korean man, Ri Jong-chol, who is also being held over the killing.

Kim Jong-nam Died in Pain Within 15-20 Minutes, Says Malaysia’s Health Minister

Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam and Siti Aisyah from Indonesia are among some ten suspects identified by Malaysia as being involved in the killing.

The other suspects include a senior official at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur and a staff member of the state airline. South Korea believes at least four suspects are North Korean spies.

A high-level delegation from North Korea – led by the former ambassador to the UN – arrived in Kuala Lumpur on February 28.

They said they were seeking the retrieval of the body and the release of Ri Jong Chol, as well as the “development of friendly relationships” between North Korea and Malaysia.

North Korea has not confirmed that the person killed on February 13 at Kuala Lumpur airport was Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of leader Kim Jong-un, saying only he was a North Korean traveling on a diplomatic passport.

Kim Jong-nam, 42, was at a check-in desk for a flight to Macau, where he lives, when he was accosted.

Kim Jong-un’s brother was smeared with a very high amount of the toxic nerve agent VX and died in pain within 15-20 minutes, Malaysia’s health minister said on February 26.

Lee Jae-yong: Samsung Chief to Be Indicted on Bribery and Embezzlement Charges

0

Samsung vice-president and heir apparent Lee Jae-yong is to be formally indicted on multiple charges including bribery and embezzlement, South Korean prosecutors said.

The case is tied to the Choi Soon-sil scandal which led to the impeachment of South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye.

The special prosecutor’s office announced the charges against the de-facto Samsung chief, along with four other company executives.

Three of those executives resigned on February 28 following the announcement.

Samsung also said it was dismantling its corporate strategic office, a unit coordinating the various arms of the huge conglomerate.

The tech giant is accused of giving donations to non-profit foundations operated by Choi Soon-sil, a close friend of President Park Geun-hye, in exchange for government favors.

Lee Jae-yong had been arrested earlier this month as prosecutors prepared the indictment.

Prosecutors accused Lee Jae-yong of giving donations worth 41 billion won ($36 million) to organizations linked to Choi Soon-sil. They alleged this was done to win government support for a big restructuring of Samsung that would help a smooth leadership transition in favor of Lee Jae-yong, who is standing in as chairman for his ill father, Lee Kun-hee.

The controversial merger required support from the national pension fund – the allegation is that this support was granted in return for the donations.

In a December parliamentary hearing, Samsung admitted giving a total of 20.4 billion won to two foundations, but denied seeking favors in return.

Lee Jae-yong also confirmed the company gave a horse and money to help the equestrian career of Choi Soon-sil’s daughter, Chung Yoo-ra, something he said he now regrets.

This centers around President Park Geun-hye’s ties to Choi Soon-sil and has brought allegations of cult activities, influence-peddling and leaks of classified information.

Choi Soon-sil is a long term family friend whose father had already had close ties with President Park’s father who was president in the 1970s.

As well as soliciting donations, Choi Soon-sil is accused of using their friendship to interfere in politics.

Choi Soon-sil is now on trial charged with various offences, including abuse of authority, coercion and attempted fraud, and denies wrongdoing.

In December 2016, the parliament voted to impeach President Park Geun-hye. Her case is now being heard by the constitutional court. Meanwhile she has been stripped of her presidential powers.

Regardless of the outcome, Lee Jae-yong’s trial is a big blow to Samsung. His arrest may not affect short term production or the running of the firm but there could be long term implications.

Samsung is one of the biggest electronics companies in the world and for the head of a company that thrives on a premium brand image to be involved in a corruption scandal is a huge embarrassment.

Earlier in February, when Lee Jae-yong was first arrested, Samsung said it would do its best “to ensure that the truth is revealed in future court proceedings”, though denies wrongdoing.

SpaceX to Fly Two Private Citizens Around the Moon in 2018

SpaceX has announced that two private citizens have paid to be sent around the Moon.

The company’s CEO Elon Musk said the mission is planned for late 2018 and the tourists “have already paid a significant deposit”.

The two unnamed space tourists will fly aboard a spaceship which is set for its first unmanned test flight later this year.

Elon Musk said the co-operation of NASA had made the plan possible.

He said the two passengers “will travel faster and further into the solar system than any before them”.

Elon Musk declined to reveal their identities, only saying that they knew each other and that “it’s nobody from Hollywood”.

He added: “Like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all humankind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration.

“We expect to conduct health and fitness tests, as well as begin initial training later this year.”

The first mission would be unmanned, and the next one – with crew – was expected in Q2 of 2018, he said.

Elon Musk also said the first passengers “are entering this with their eyes open, knowing that there is some risk here”.

“They’re certainly not naive, and we’ll do everything we can to minimize that risk, but it’s not zero.”

The tourists would make a loop around the Moon, skimming the lunar surface and then going well beyond, the entrepreneur said.

The mission will not involve a lunar landing.

If NASA decided it wanted to be first to take part in a lunar flyby mission, then the agency would have priority, Elon Musk said.

The US has not sent astronauts to the Moon since the early 1970s.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic venture proposes to send tourists on short sub-orbital flights in its vehicle SpaceShipTwo; the cost of a seat is listed as $250,000.

However, Virgin Galactic’s space vehicle was destroyed in a crash in 2014 and it remains unclear when the first flights with paying customers will begin.

New Budget: Donald Trump Seeks to Increase Military Spending by 9%

President Donald Trump is seeking to boost defense spending by $54 billion in his proposed budget plan for 2018, which is about a 9% increase.

The blueprint also calls for deep cuts elsewhere, including to foreign assistance and environmental budgets.

However, President Trump’s plan leaves large welfare programs such as Social Security and Medicare untouched, despite Republican calls for reform.

Donald Trump is expected to release his final budget proposal in mid-March.

He said in a meeting with governors at the White House on February 27: “We’re going to do more with less and make the government lean and accountable.”

President Trump, who vowed to increase military spending and preserve welfare programs during his campaign, said the budget will focus on “military, safety, economic development”.

He said: “It will include an historic increase in defense spending to rebuild the depleted military of the United States of America at a time we most need it.”

Military spending has declined in recent years due to budgetary battles in Congress that led to a defense sequester.

Donald Trump’s proposal would return the United States closer to wartime spending.

He also said he would discuss his plans for infrastructure spending, in a speech to Congress on February 28.

“We’re going to start spending on infrastructure big,” he said.

Donald Trump did not say how his budget proposal will tackle mandatory spending and taxes, promising those details to come later.

He pledged to cut taxes during his presidential campaign, which would likely add to the national debt.

Military spending has declined in recent years due to budgetary battles in Congress that led to a defense sequester.

The White House sent President Trump’s 2018 budget blueprint, which begins on October 1, to federal agencies on February 27.

The agencies will then review the plan and propose changes to the cuts as the White House prepares for negotiations with Congress.

The Republican-controlled Congress must approve any federal spending.

Donald Trump’s plan is expected to face backlash from Democrats and some Republicans over cuts to domestic programs.

South Korea Major Opposition Party Seeks Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn’s Impeachment

South Korea’s opposition seeks the impeachment of acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn over his decisions on the country’s corruption scandal.

The interim leader decided not to extend a special prosecutor’s investigation which involves his predecessor, President Park Geun-hye.

Prosecutors want more time to question her over the scandal.

Park Geun-hye is awaiting a separate ruling on her December impeachment from the  constitutional court.

She is still technically president, though she has been stripped of her powers while the constitutional court decides her fate. As long as she remains president, she is immune from prosecution.

However, the wider corruption investigation which emerged from the scandal will now end on February 28, before special prosecutors have the opportunity to question Park Geun-hye.

Any further investigation will fall to individual state prosecutors.

Hwang Kyo-ahn, who remains prime minister while he sits in for the president, said that continuing the investigation is not in the best interests of the nation.

His spokesman said: “After much deliberation [the acting president] has decided that it would be best for country’s stability to not extend the special investigation and for the prosecutors to take over.”

Choo Mi-ae, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, said Hwang Kyo-ahn’s decision indicated he was trying “to become Park’s shield to protect her and her associates”.

Park Geun-hye was impeached weeks after her old friend Choi Soon-sil was arrested.

In a written statement on February 27, Park Geun-hye maintained her innocence, but said she had “belated regret, that I should have been more cautious with my trust in her.”

Choi Soon-sil is accused of using her presidential connections to pressure companies for millions of dollars in donations to two non-profit foundations she controlled. President Park Geun-hye is alleged to have been personally involved.

On November 20, Choi Soon-sil was charged with various offences, including abuse of authority, coercion, attempted coercion and attempted fraud, leading to the wider investigation.

Samsung vice-president was also arrested in connection with the probe.

The company is accused of giving donations to non-profit foundations operated by Choi Soon-sil in exchange for government favors.

Park Geun-hye’s case at the constitutional court also heard the final arguments on February 27. It is not known when the final verdict will be delivered.

The court may reject Park Geun-hye’s impeachment, restoring her powers and returning the country to its status quo.

If, however they uphold the parliament’s decision, a presidential election must be held.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets calling on ousted President Park Geun-hye to step down immediately, rather than continue to fight her impeachment in the constitutional court.

Deaf Ears: Business Advice You Should Never Listen To

0

When you’re running a business, there’s no shortage of people who want to come out of the woodwork in order to give you advice on exactly how you should go about doing it. Whether it’s other business owners, investors, or even blog posts and websites. Everyone has an opinion of the right and wrong ways to go about running a business, and the big issue is that these opinions often end up conflicting with one another. Of course, that’s not always a bad thing. There are plenty of occasions where the best possible thing is to hear as many sides of the story as possible in order to create a more nuanced and deep understanding of how to deal with something. However, there is a significant amount of advice that get’s given out to new business owners a lot of the time that is not only wrong but can sometimes actually be dangerous to your business as a whole! With that in mind, here is are some pieces of business advice that you should never take.

Bigger is always better

business

https://pixabay.com/p-1370984/?no_redirect

Of course, this is not to say that growth it not important to a business, of course, it is. Not business could possibly expect to compete without being able to grow over time. But far too often business owners assume that growth is the only thing that’s truly important. This often ends up with them doing so in a way that is almost entirely unsustainable. The bigger a business becomes, the more responsibility you have to deal with. Not to mention the increased pressure from both customers and investors. If you haven’t grown your business in a sustainable way, then there’s simply no chance that you’re going to be able to support that kind of pressure. The key is to only every grow your business at a rate that still allows you to support it properly, even if that means doing so more slowly than you might have expected.

Don’t bother with physical marketing

digital-marketing

https://pixabay.com/p-1527799/?no_redirect

You can almost never get through a conversation about the modern business world without someone claiming that the internet has “killed” traditional marketing techniques. Anyone with any sense can see that this is utter nonsense, but it’s something that far too many impressionable new business owners tend to take to heart. If you ignore physical marketing, then you’re shutting yourself off from entire demographics who might be incredibly interested in your product. Not only that but there are plenty of different types of traditional marketing that you can use. Whether it’s custom signs and banners from www.selbys.net, direct mail, or even simply networking with people in person, there are always ways in which traditional marketing can help your business. You’ve just got to be willing to put in the time and effort.

More employees make things easier

Brussels-Airport

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brussels_Airport_Company_employees_(11993150334).jpg

The issue here is that it assumes that many hands always make light work, which is simply not true. In fact, if each employee doesn’t have enough work to keep them busy, they’re going to get bored. This means that you end up with a large staff who you are paying to do virtually nothing. It’s far better to streamline your staff and provide them with enough work to keep them engaged and motivated throughout the day.

The Financial Advice You’ve Heard A Million Times But Should Never Listen To

0

If you’ve been to university, especially a top-tier university like Oxford or Harvard, you will have been deluged with advice about how you should take a job at a corporate gig. This advice seems logical at the time: after all, corporate work is usually stable and relatively well paid. But it’s not exactly enjoyable, especially for people who are looking to take a more entrepreneurial path. In fact, for some people, advice to go down the corporate road can lead to decades of misery that are never really resolved.

Flickr

The problem is that a lot of financial advice is based on intuition, rather than after a careful examination of an individual’s priorities. It’s about striking a balance between what seems possible, and what seems safe. The problem for many entrepreneurs is striking a balance between the two. Some entrepreneurs rely on other people exclusively for advice about their finances, while others only rely on themselves. Jodi Goldstein, the woman behind Drync, the mobile wine company, says that what entrepreneurs need is a bit of both. They have to know good advice when they hear it and ignore all the bad.

“Stick To Advisors In Your Industry”

The first thing that Goldstein recommends that businesses do is seek advice outside of their immediate industry. Relying solely on one narrow cadre of people won’t give you the diverse range of experience that you need to understand how to go about organizing your finances successfully. Approach people with diverse backgrounds outside of your industry who have also been successful, and try to find out what it was that they did that helped them to make money.

“Focus On The Short Term”

Another bad piece of advice that you often hear is to focus on the short term. Usually, this is dressed up in a different way, like the importance of cash flow or the necessity of living in the moment. But the problem with this advice is that making money is almost always about taking the long road. Goldstein says that she has been to startups where the exclusive focus is on making money in the immediate term without thinking about how those quick financial gains will translate into long-term business plans. Often, she says, the promise of making money fast leads to a deterioration in the ethics of the company, which can ultimately hurt it in the long term.

“Don’t Litigate, Just Move On”

Another piece of financial advice that is bandied about with worrying regularity is this idea that entrepreneurs shouldn’t sue, they should just move on. However, this isn’t something that most entrepreneurs do as evidenced by the number of personal injury law firms. Goldstein says that founders need to take advantage of opportunities to litigate, otherwise they will find themselves working in an asymmetric environment. If they aren’t litigating, their competitors will be.

“Don’t Vet The People Who Give You Advice”

If you’re still in the startup phase, you’ll be amazed by just how many people there are out there who want to give you advice. Often, they’ll claim to have experience and know what’s best for your business, but you shouldn’t take their word for it. Do a quick background check on these people to make sure they’re who they say they are.

What Employees Want Most

0

It’s often been said that people don’t quit their jobs, they quit their managers. Every year, thousands of people escape a toxic office environment where their emotional, personal, professional and safety needs remain unmet. The problem for employers is that all of this stuff is rather costly. There’s a lot of money involved in finding and training new staff, so any way to get your existing staff to hang around is a bonus.

Some enterprising companies are already looking at ways to do this. For instance, Jeff Gunther a CEO of a Charlottesville software company decided to switch things up at his company, after being influenced by the book Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It. He realized that the best way to improve his productivity and make his staff happier was to operate what is known in the industry as a “results-based working environment.” What this meant, essentially, was that workers could do whatever they wanted and use their time as they saw fit, so long as they got the job done. Employees at his company can take time off when they want, work late, work early and work from home if so they choose, so long as the business as a whole achieves its objectives.

What else do employees want from the companies for which they work? Let’s take a look.

Employees Want Goals

It turns out that just asking somebody to do the same task over and over again isn’t a particularly good way to make them thrilled about coming to work. It’s boring doing the same thing every day, without an overarching objective in mind. Gunther says that he tries to institute measurable and obtainable goals for his team members to give them something to strive for. For instance, he tasked his sales team with making a given dollar value amount of sales in a particular time period. Gunther says, however, that it is important to give teams a degree of autonomy in this process. It should be up to them, he says, to decide how they’re going to complete the mission.

Employees Want Safety

Every year, something like 300,000 people get seriously ill and die in the workplace. More often than not, it’s because of things like heart attacks and stroke. This is why there is a growing demand from employees for companies that are prepared to react when things go wrong. Older employees especially, want to know that they are protected, should the worst happen. An onsite automatic external defibrillator, for instance, as well as a trained member of staff, are important for getting the message across that team working on your site are protected. Remember, employees want transparency and safety, as well as high pay.

Employees Want To Be Able To Innovate

innovate

Flickr

When Google instituted it’s 20 percent creativity time where employees got to do whatever they wanted, nobody thought it would work. But surprisingly, it did work and led to greater success within the company. The same goes for your business. People in the organization need to have the opportunity to bring something new to the table. Foster innovation through things like brainstorming sessions.

MWC 2017: Nokia 3310 Re-Launched in New Version After 17 Years

The iconic Nokia 3310 phone has been re-launched in a revamped version nearly 17 years after its debut.

Many consider the original handset iconic because of its popularity and sturdiness. More than 126 million were produced before the model was phased out in 2005.

The new Nokia 3310 will be sold under license by the Finnish start-up HMD Global, which also unveiled several Nokia-branded Android smartphones.

The announcement was made ahead of the start of the Mobile World Congress tech show in Barcelona. Huawei, Lenovo and LG are among others to have unveiled new devices.

Nokia no longer makes phones itself, but manufactures telecoms equipment, Ozo virtual reality cameras, and health kit under the Withings brand.

The new 3310 qualifies as a “feature phone” rather than a smartphone as it only provides limited internet facilities.

It relies on 2.5G connectivity – which has slower data speeds than 3G or 4G – and is powered by the S30+ operating system, which allows web browsing but has a much smaller range of apps than Android or iOS. Its single camera is also restricted to two megapixels.

However, the new version’s advantage over more powerful handsets is its battery life. HMD says the color-screened phone has up to a month’s standby time and delivers more than 22 hours of talk time.

Nokia 3310 also comes with the modern version of the classic game Snake preinstalled.

Its launch price is €49 ($51,75).

HMD also confirmed the Nokia 6 Android smartphone would be released worldwide following its China debut in January.

The device has a 16 megapixel rear camera, a 5.5in 1080p “full definition” screen and includes the Google Assistant helper – the search engine’s rival to Apple’s Siri.

Nokia 6 is priced as a mid-tier device at €229, alongside a glossy black special edition that costs €299.

In addition, the company showed off smaller, lower-range Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 models.

Taiwan’s Foxconn will manufacture the phones, which may offset concerns that networks might have about HMD’s capacity to deliver.

Kim Jong-nam Died in Pain Within 15-20 Minutes, Says Malaysia’s Health Minister

0

Kim Jong-nam was given a very high amount of the toxic nerve agent VX and he died in pain within 15-20 minutes, Malaysia’s health minister says.

No antidote would have worked, said Subramaniam Sathasivam.

The half-brother of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un died two weeks ago after two women accosted him in a check-in hall at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The women say they thought they were doing a TV prank. North Korea denies killing the high-profile critic of the regime.

VX is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the UN. A drop on the skin can kill in minutes.

Kim Jong-nam is thought to have fallen out of favor with Kim Jong-il in 2001 after he was caught trying to sneak into Japan using a false passport

One of two women held, Siti Aisyah, a 25-year-old Indonesian national, told officials from her country’s embassy that she was given 400 Malaysian ringgit ($90) to smear Kim Jong-nam’s face with “baby oil” as part of a reality show joke.

Doan Thi Huong, a 28-year-old Vietnamese national, has also said she thought she was taking part in a TV prank.

Malaysian police say the attackers had been trained to wash their hands immediately after the attack.

Some experts have suggested that they might have each smeared two different non-lethal elements of VX, which became deadly when mixed on Kim Jong-nam’s face.

A North Korean man has also been arrested in connection with the killing.

At least seven other suspects are wanted for questioning by police, including 44-year-old Hyon Kwang Song, second secretary at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

On February 26, Malaysian authorities swept the airport and declared it safe.

They are also analyzing samples found at a flat said to have been rented by suspects.

Oscars 2017 Big Mistake: Moonlight Wins Best Picture After La La Land Wrong Announcement

A big mistake has happened at the 89th Academy Awards – La La Land was announced as the best picture winner, then organizers revealed that Moonlight won the award.

It appears Warren Beatty was handed the previous winner’s envelope, containing a card saying “Emma Stone, La La Land”, resulting in the error.

The La La Land team was in the middle of their acceptance speeches when the mistake was discovered.

Emma Stone said backstage afterwards: “Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time? Cool! It’s going to be history.”

The musical won six Oscars including best director and best actress. Moonlight also won adapted screenplay and best supporting actor.

La La Land director Damien Chazelle became the youngest filmmaker to win a best director Oscar at the age of 32.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land had taken the best picture prize – but then the musical’s producer Jordan Horowitz announced there had been a mistake.

Jordan Horowitz said: “This is not a joke. Moonlight is best picture,” and showed the camera the card that revealed the winner.

Two La La Land producers had already given their acceptance speeches before the mistake was revealed.

This year’s Academy Awards host Jimmy Kimmel joked that he knew he would mess up compering the ceremony, and added: “Personally I blame Steve Harvey for this,” referring to Harvey’s mistake in announcing the Miss Universe winner in 2015.

Warren Beatty had opened the envelope but hesitated to read out what it said in side, leaving it to Faye Dunaway to announce La La Land.

He returned to the microphone to say: “I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said <<Emma Stone, La La Land>>, and that is why I took such a long look at Faye and at you.

“I wasn’t trying to be funny. This is Moonlight for best picture.”

Moonlight director Barry Jenkins said: “Very clearly even in my dreams this can’t be true. But to hell with it because this is true. It’s true, its not fake.”

Paying tribute to the team behind La La Land for the way they handled the mistake, he said: “We have been on the road with these guys and it was so gracious and so generous of them.”

Emma Stone, who won the coveted best actress prize, said backstage.

“I’m so excited for Moonlight. Of course it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land and I would love to win best picture. But we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it is one of the best films of all time.

“Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time? Cool! It’s going to be history.”

She also said that she still had the envelope for best actress in her hand, although there are always two envelopes (one for back-up), which might explain why the mistake occurred.

La La Land also picked up best cinematography, best score and best original song for City of Stars.

The movie also won best production design.

Casey Affleck won best actor for Manchester by the Sea, while the drama also won best original screenplay.

Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor, for Moonlight.

He thanked his wife in his acceptance speech, telling the audience she gave birth to their daughter four days ago. It also picked up best original screenplay.

Best supporting actress went to Viola Davis for Fences, directed by and starring Denzel Washington.

The movie is an adaptation of August Wilson’s play of the same name.

Jimmy Kimmel put on a strong performance, with much of his patter unsurprisingly relating to the current political climate.

In a reference to President Donald Trump’s Twitter attack on Meryl Streep following her criticism of him at the Golden Globes, Jimmy Kimmel joked that the actress was “uninspiring… mediocre… underwhelming and lackluster”.

Jimmy Kimmel asked the audience to give a round of applause for “the highly overrated Meryl Streep. Great dress, is that Ivanka?”

He also joked that Hollywood doesn’t discriminate – apart from “on age and weight”.

The first political speech of the night came from Alessandro Bertolazzi, one of the make-up and hairstyling winners for Suicide Squad, who said: “I’m an immigrant, I’m from Italy, this is for all the immigrants.”

Colleen Atwood won an impressive fourth Oscar for costume design for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, having won previously in 2011 for Alice in Wonderland, in 2006 for Memoirs of a Geisha and in 2003 for Chicago.

Kevin O’Connell finally picked up an Oscar after 21 nominations for Hacksaw Ridge. He was first nominated back in 1984 for Terms of Endearment.

The movie also picked up best editing.

Iranian film director Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman was named best foreign film.

Asghar Farhadi chose to stay away from the ceremony following President Trump’s attempt to ban travel from Iran and six other mainly Muslim countries.

Zootopia won best animation, beating films such as Kubo and the Two Strings and Moana.

Other winners included The White Helmets, which picked up best documentary short.

The US denied entry to 21-year-old Syrian Khaled Khatib behind the movie because of problems with his documents.

The a 40-minute Netflix documentary follows volunteers who risk their lives to rescue civilians in Syria.

He also earned three Best Actor Golden Globe nominations for his starring role in the HBO drama Big Love, where he played a suburban polygamist juggling three wives and families.

At the time of his death, Bill Paxton was working on a crime thriller TV series – Training Day – for CBS.

He played a morally dubious LAPD officer, Detective Frank Rourke.

Fellow Hollywood stars were quick to pay tribute to Bill Paxton as news of his death spread –

Bill Paxton’s family said in a statement: “A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker.

“Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.”

Mardi Gras 2017: Pick-up Truck Driven Into Crowd at New Orleans Parade

A pick-up truck has driven into a crowd at a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, leaving 28 people injured, some seriously.

On February 25, the vehicle hit crowds watching the Krewe of Endymion parade in the Mid-City district.

Police say one person was in custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and terrorism was not suspected.

The driver seemed unaware of what he had done, one eyewitness told local media.

“He was just kind of out of it,” Kourtney McKinnis told the New Orleans Advocate.

Police Chief Michael Harrison said 21 people were taken to hospital, five in serious condition, with another seven also injured.

A police officer was among the injured, he said.

Social clubs, known as Krewes, organize different parades in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

President Donald Trump Will NOT Attend White House Correspondents’ Dinner

President Donald Trump has announced he will skip the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 29.

The event draws celebrities, journalists and politicians, normally including the president.

Donald Trump said he would not attend the event a day after the White House excluded several major broadcasters and newspapers from a press briefing.

The president has frequently described negative news coverage as “fake”.

However, he has not provided any evidence for his claims.

The announcement comes as relations between the White House and some media outlets continue to deteriorate.

On February 24, the CNN, Buzzfeed, BBC and the New York Times were among media groups barred from an off-camera informal briefing held by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

Hours before the briefing, President Trump had delivered a strong attack on what he called “fake news” in the media, targeting stories with unnamed sources.

He said “fake news” was the “enemy of the people”.

President Trump announced his non-attendance at the correspondents’ dinner via Twitter, writing: “I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!”

Bloomberg News and the New Yorker magazine are among media outlets who have said they will not hold their usual after-parties this year.

There have been some calls for journalists to boycott the event itself.

According to the New York Times, every sitting president since 1924 has attended the correspondents’ dinner at least once.

They traditionally make a light-hearted speech at the annual event. Former President Barack Obama attended eight times.

Donald Trump has been a regular at the dinner in the recent past.

In 2011, Barack Obama joked that Donald Trump would turn the White House into a casino if he became president and made fun of rumors, then propagated by Trump, that President Obama was not born in the United States.

Donald Trump was shown on camera sitting stony-faced through a barrage of jokes at his expense, including some from host Seth Meyers, although he said last year that he “loved that dinner”.

Many believe that the 2011 event fuelled Donald Trump’s desire to enter politics and later run for office.

In a statement the White House Correspondents’ Association said it took note of President Trump’s announcement and said the dinner would “continue to be a celebration of the First Amendment and the important role played by an independent news media in a healthy republic”.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Kuala Lumpur Airport Declared Free of Any Hazardous Material

0

The Kuala Lumpur airport terminal, where Kim Jong-nam was killed with VX nerve agent, has been declared free of any “hazardous material” by Malaysian police.

Security teams in protective suits had earlier swept the area.

According to Malaysia’s health minister, an autopsy suggested VX used to kill Kim Jong-nam caused “very serious paralysis”.

Tests show the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was killed with VX.

An Indonesian woman arrested for the murder has said she was given 400 Malaysian ringgit ($90) to carry out a prank.

Siti Aisyah, 25, told Indonesian embassy officials that she was given the cash to smear Kim Jong-nam’s face with “baby oil” as part of a reality show joke.

VX is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the UN. A drop on the skin can kill in minutes.

Kim Jong-nam died on February 13 after two women accosted him briefly in a check-in hall at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s low-cost carrier terminal, known as KLIA2.

Health Minister S Subramaniam said the discovery that the VX toxin was used confirmed the hospital’s autopsy result, which suggested that a “chemical agent caused very serious paralysis”, leading to death “in a very short period of time”.

Kuala Lumpur airport has been swept for toxic chemicals by various specialized police teams, forensic experts, the fire department’s hazardous materials unit and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board.

“As a result of this screening process done we confirm: number one, there is no hazardous material found in KLIA2. Number two, KLIA2 is free from any form of contamination of hazardous material. And thirdly, is KLIA2 is declared a safe zone,” said Abdul Samah Mat, the police official heading the investigation.

There is widespread suspicion that North Korea was behind the attack, which it strongly denies.

A Vietnamese woman and a North Korean man have also been arrested in connection with the killing.

The Vietnamese foreign ministry confirmed that the Vietnamese national being held was 28-year-old Doan Thi Huong, saying she had told officials she thought she was taking part in a television prank.

At least seven other suspects are wanted for questioning by police, including Hyon Kwang Song, 44, second secretary at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The officials said they did not see any physical signs that the suspect had been affected by the chemical.

Malaysian police say the attackers had been trained to immediately wash their hands after the attack.

Some experts have suggested that they might have each smeared two different non-lethal elements of VX, which became deadly when mixed on Kim Jong-nam’s face.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo Responds to Donald Trump’s Negative Comments

Paris’ Mayor Anne Hidalgo has hit back at President Donald Trump’s negative remarks about the city, using Walt Disney characters.

She tweeted a picture of herself with Mickey and Minnie Mouse celebrating Paris’ “dynamism and spirit of openness”.

French President Francois Hollande said such criticisms were “never good”.

At a speech to conservative activists, Donald Trump cited a friend who no longer wanted to take his family to Paris.

The president also criticized Europe’s handling of terrorism, saying that Americans could not let recent attacks happen in the US.

More than 230 people have died in a series of attacks in France since the beginning of 2015, including in January and November of that year in Paris and in Nice in July 2016.

France has been under a state of emergency for more than a year.

Speaking at the CPAC on February 24, Donald Trump sought to justify his crackdown on immigration by criticizing the effect it had had on some European countries.

The president singled out Paris, mentioning a friend called “Jim” who used to be a regular visitor to the city but had stopped going in recent years because “Paris is no longer Paris”.

“Take a look at what’s happening to our world, folks, and we have to be smart… We can’t let that happen to us,” Donald Trump went on.

Anne Hidalgo stressed the inclusivity and energy of Paris, tweeting a picture of her launching a tourism campaign at the Eiffel Tower.

The remarks came as France celebrated the 25th anniversary of the theme park Disneyland Paris.

She also challenged the suggestion that tourist numbers from the United States were in decline, saying reservations were up 30% in 2017.

President Hollande, meanwhile, said Donald Trump’s remarks were no way to behave towards an ally.

“It is never good to show the slightest mistrust towards a friendly country,” he said.

“That is not what I would do towards a friendly country and I would ask the American president not to do it to France.”

In a reference to France’s tighter gun control laws, Francoise Hollande said: “There are no weapons circulating here. There are no people who take weapons to shoot into the crowd simply for the satisfaction of causing drama and tragedy.”

According to figures published by the Paris Office of Tourism, 7,356,945 foreign tourists arrived at hotels in the city of Paris between January and November 2016, 11.9% fewer than in the same period the previous year.

Among American tourists the decline was only slighter smaller – there were 1,387,191 hotel arrivals, down 9.9%.

In the same period there was a slight rise in the number of tourists from other parts of France, of 0.3% to almost 6 million.

The 2015 figures mostly cover the period before the November 13 attacks which shocked the country and left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded.

No figures were given for tourists staying in non-hotel accommodation such as Airbnb.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Indonesian Suspect Was Paid $90 to Carry Out A Prank

0

Siti Aisyah, an Indonesian woman who was arrested for the murder of Kim Jong-nam, has said she was given 400 Malaysian ringgits ($90) to carry out a prank.

Indonesian embassy officials met the 25-year-old on February 25 in Kuala Lumpur.

Siti Aisyah said she was given the cash to smear Kim Jong-nam’s face with “baby oil” as part of a reality show joke.

Tests show the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was killed with the highly toxic nerve agent VX.

VX is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations.

Kim Jong-nam died on February 13 after two women accosted him briefly in a check-in hall at Kuala Lumpur international airport.

Malaysian police have said that a sweep of the airport for toxic chemicals by a forensic team, the fire department and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board will take place from 01:00 on February 26.

There is widespread suspicion that North Korea was behind the attack, which it strongly denies.

A Vietnamese woman and a North Korean man have also been arrested in connection with the assassination of Kim Jong-nam. At least seven other suspects are wanted by police.

After a 30-minute meeting with Siti Aisyah on February 25, Indonesian Deputy Ambassador Andreano Erwin said: “She only said in general that somebody asked her to do this activity. She only said in general she met with some people who looked Japanese or Korean.

“According to her, that person gave her 400 ringgits to do this activity… She only said she was given a kind of oil, like baby oil.”

The officials said they did not see any physical signs that the suspect had been affected by the chemical.

Vietnamese officials also met their arrested national, Doan Thi Huong, 28, but made no comment.

Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on February 24 that the presence of the nerve agent had been detected in swabs taken from Kim Jong-nam’s eyes and face.

Kim Jong-nam had sought medical help at the airport, saying someone had splashed or sprayed him with liquid. He then had a seizure and died on the way to hospital.
