CERN restarts Large Hadron Collider after two years

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has restarted, with protons circling the machine’s 27km tunnel for the first time since 2013.

Particle beams have now travelled in both directions, inside parallel pipes, at a whisker below the speed of light.

Actual collisions will not begin for at least another month, but they will take place with nearly double the energy the LHC reached during its first run.CERN LHC

Scientists hope to glimpse a “new physics” beyond the Standard Model.

CERN’s Director General Rolf Heuer told engineers and scientists at the lab: “Congratulations. Thank you very much everyone… now the hard work starts.”

CERN’s director for accelerators and technology, Frédérick Bordry, said: “After two years of effort, the LHC is in great shape.

“But the most important step is still to come when we increase the energy of the beams to new record levels.”

Urbi et Orbi 2015: Pope Francis calls for peace in Syria and Iraq

During his traditional Easter Sunday’s Urbi et Orbi address, Pope Francis has called for peace in Syria and Iraq.

The pontiff urged the international community to address the “immense humanitarian tragedy” in both countries.

Pope Francis also called for peace in the Holy Land, Ukraine, Libya, Yemen, Nigeria, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He once again referred to the persecution of Christians in many countries.

Pope Francis said: “We ask Jesus, the victor over death, to lighten the sufferings of our many brothers and sisters who are persecuted for his name, and of all those who suffer injustice as a result of ongoing conflicts and violence.

“We ask for peace, above all, for Syria and Iraq, that the roar of arms may cease and that peaceful relations may be restored among the various groups which make up those beloved countries. Pope Francis Urbi et Orbi 2015

“May the international community not stand by before the immense humanitarian tragedy unfolding in these countries and the drama of the numerous refugees.”

The Pope also said his thoughts and prayers were with the young people killed in last Thursday’s massacre at Garissa University College in Kenya.

Referring to the outline agreement on Iran’s nuclear program recently reached in the Swiss city of Lausanne, he expressed hope that it might be “a definitive step toward a more secure and fraternal world”.

Pope Francis concluded his address by saying: “We ask for peace and freedom for the many men and women subject to old and new forms of enslavement on the part of criminal individuals and groups.

“Peace and liberty for the victims of drug dealers, who are often allied with the powers who ought to defend peace and harmony in the human family. And we ask peace for this world subjected to arms dealers.”

During this year’s Good Friday service in Rome, Pope Francis condemned what he termed the “complicit silence” about the killing of Christians.

Easter Sunday 2015: Pope Francis celebrates Mass of Jesus Resurrection in St. Peter’s Square

Pope Francis is celebrating a Mass of Jesus Resurrection in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City starting with 10:15 AM local time on Easter Sunday.

The Mass and the subsequent Urbi et Orbi (to the City and to the World) blessing will attended by thousands of devout Roman Catholics and will be livestreamed by the Vatican across the world.Pope Francis Easter Sunday 2015

The special Easter Mass commemorates the day in Christian faith when Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven. It is the culmination of the Christian Holy Week, which is marked by numerous holy days and celebrations. It also marks the end of the Lent.

According to religious tradition, the resurrection occurred three days after Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and burial, marked as Good Friday on the Christian calendar. Holy Week is observed by most Christian denominations, including the Orthodox Churches, Roman Catholic Church and most Protestant Churches.

Kenya attack: Three days of national mourning for Garissa University attack victims

Kenya has declared three days of national mourning for the 148 victims of Garissa University attack by militant group al-Shabab.

Easter ceremonies will be held to remember those who died in Thursday’s attack on Garissa University campus, and flags are expected to fly at half-mast.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to respond to the attack “in the severest ways possible”.

Sunni Islam’s most respected seat of learning, Cairo’s al-Azhar University, has also condemned the attack.

The Kenyan Red Cross says that so far 54 of the victims have been identified by relatives at a morgue in the capital, Nairobi.

Buses are transporting more than 600 students and about 50 staff who survived the attacks to their hometowns.

Many survivors have been reunited with their families at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium which has been set up as a disaster centre.Kenya national mourning for Garissa University attack victims

Almost all of the 148 killed were students and another 79 people were injured.

Four gunmen were killed, and officials say they are holding five people for questioning – one of whom is believed to be a university security guard.

Both Christians and Muslims have denounced the attack. On April 5, Sunni Islam’s most respected seat of learning, Cairo’s al-Azhar University, said it condemned the “terrorist attack”.

Pope Francis is expected to use his traditional Easter Sunday message to describe the students as contemporary Christian martyrs.

In Kenya, people took the streets to protest the killings and reject the idea that al-Shabab had succeeded in dividing the country.

US economy adds only 126,000 jobs in March 2015

The US economy added only 126,000 jobs in March – a gain far lower than January and February.

The slower gains mark a break from a 12-month streak where employers added over 200,000 jobs each month.

Severe winter weather, factory slowdowns, and dull construction activity contributed to low numbers.

The unemployment rate held at 5.5%, the US Department of Labor said.

Additionally, the job statistics for January and February were revised down by a combined 69,000 jobs.US jobs March 2015

Factories shed 1,000 jobs after 19-months of hiring, while the construction industry broke a 15-month streak with same number of losses.

Restaurant hiring took a sharp downward turn, while the sector for mining, logging, and oil drilling lost 11,000 jobs.

Wage growth was unexceptional. Average hourly wages rose just $0.07 – a year-over-year rise of 2.1%.

People in the US worked fewer hours on average in March than they did in February, meaning their actual earnings fell.

Many Americans are out of the labour force, due in part to the large number of so-called “baby boomers” who are reaching retirement age.

In March, only 62.7% of Americans were working or looking for work – a figured tied with the lowest rate since 1978.

Cheaper gasoline and past job growth have not yet boosted consumer spending, and modest wage gains have burdened the US economy since the Great Recession ended nearly six years ago.

Fenerbahce team bus attacked by gunman in Trabzon

Fenerbahce’s team bus has been attacked by a gunman after their 5-1 victory at Rizespor.

The driver was taken to hospital but no players were injured in the attack, which happened while they were travelling to Trabzon airport.

PM Ahmet Davutoglu said an investigation was under way.

The Turkish Football Federation condemned the attack and Fenerbahce general secretary Mahmut Uslu said the incident was “very wrong”.

“We come here to do sport; we come to play football,” said Mahmut Uslu, who was on the bus at the time of the attack.

Abdulcelil Oz, the governor of Trabzon in the north-east of Turkey, initially said the bus appeared to have been hit by a stone but later released a second statement, saying it seemed to have been a bullet.

“The latest situation is that it appears to be a gun,” Abdulcelil Oz said.

“It is too soon to say anything definite, but it appears to be a type of bullet fired by a rifle.”

Large crowds of Fenerbahce fans waited at Istanbul Airport to welcome the players back.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a Fenerbahce supporter, reportedly called the local governor to inquire about the investigation into the incident.

Fenerbahce are the defending champions and have won the major domestic competition 19 times, with former Premier League players Dirk Kuyt, Raul Meireles and Emre in their side.

Istanbul-based Fenerbahce went top of the table with their victory on April 4, one point ahead of bitter rivals Galatasaray.

Germanwings crash: French authorities halt search for victims’ bodies

The search for Germanwings flight 4U 9525 victims’ bodies at the crash site has ended, French authorities say.

Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz is said to have crashed his aircraft in the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board.

Identification of the victims will continue with analysis of the DNA found and debris will carry on being removed.

Meanwhile reports said the European Commission took issue with Germany’s aviation authority before the crash.

Wall Street Journal said it was told to “remedy long-standing problems”.

The aviation authority, the Luftfahrtbundesamt (LBA), was told in November to sort out problems including a lack of staff which could have limited its ability to carry out checks on planes and crew, the publication reports.

In light of investigators believing co-pilot Andreas Lubitz crashed the plane deliberately, the way airline crew are vetted has come under scrutiny.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) “had pointed out several cases of non-conformity,” spokesman Dominique Fouda told AFP news agency.

A European Commission spokesman said: “All EU member states have findings and this is a normal and regular occurrence.

“It is part of a continuous system of oversight – findings are followed by corrective action, similar to an audit process.”

A spokeswoman for the LBA said the authority had answered several criticisms leveled at it during the audits and those responses were now being assessed by the EASA.

France’s air accident authority has said its investigations will include a study of “systemic weaknesses” that could have led to the disaster, including psychological profiling.

Lufthansa, the parent company of budget airline Germanwings, has said Andreas Lubitz disclosed that he had had severe depression in 2009 while training for his pilot’s license.

It has also emerged that Andreas Lubitz received treatment for suicidal tendencies at one point before getting his pilot’s license.

German prosecutors found torn-up sick notes at Andreas Lubitz’s home, including one covering the day of the crash.

He was also found to have researched suicide methods and cockpit security on a tablet computer in the days preceding the disaster.

Lufthansa’s chief executive Carsten Spohr has said he is “very very sorry that such a terrible accident could have happened” and that the airline was utterly unaware of any health issues that could have compromised Andreas Lubitz’s fitness to fly.

What is Easter Vigil?

Easter Vigil, also called the Great Vigil of Easter or the Paschal Vigil, is a service held in traditional Christian churches as the first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Many Christians observe Easter Sunday a little differently than Catholics do.  For lots of churches, the peak celebration is Easter Sunday, maybe even a service at sunrise.

The Great Vigil of Easter, when observed, is the first service of Easter. It is celebrated at a convenient time between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Morning. Easter Vigil

The Easter Vigil liturgy is the most beautiful liturgy in the Roman Catholic Church. This walks through the Easter Vigil, and includes the words to the Exsultet.

Although celebrated Holy Saturday evening, it is the dramatic Easter vigil liturgy that marks the beginning of Easter. We are awaiting our master’s return with our lamps full and burning, so that he will find us awake and seat us at his table (cf. Luke 12:35ff). All Catholics should try to attend this beautiful service. The vigil is divided into four parts:

  1. Service of Light,
  2. Liturgy of the Word,
  3. Liturgy of Baptism, and
  4. Liturgy of the Eucharist.

We have been preparing for Easter through forty days of Lent, culminating in the Easter Triduum:  Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Vigil of Easter on Saturday night.  All that waiting and preparation peaks when we gather on Saturday night for a solemn vigil.

[youtube HBD7iRK6oxQ 650]

What is Holy Saturday?

In the Catholic Church, Holy Saturday, or the Saturday of Holy Week, is the final day of the Lent and the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Holy Saturday is the final day of the Triduum, the three days during which we commemorate Christ’s Passion.

It is the day when Jesus lay in his tomb after his death, according to Christian belief.

Holy Saturday (from Sabbatum Sanctum, its official liturgical name) is sacred as the day of the Lord’s rest; it has been called the “Second Sabbath” after creation. The day is and should be the most calm and quiet day of the entire Church year, a day broken by no liturgical function.Holy Saturday

On Holy Saturday the Church waits at the Lord’s tomb, meditating on his suffering and death. The altar is left bare, and the sacrifice of the Mass is not celebrated. Only after the solemn vigil during the night, held in anticipation of the resurrection, does the Easter celebration begin, with a spirit of joy that overflows into the following period of fifty days.

Candles that are lit during Holy Saturday church liturgies symbolize Jesus Christ’s victory over death, as well as the Christian belief in his resurrection. It can also mean spiritual hope and victory.

Activities on Holy Saturday:

  • Today we remember Christ in the tomb. It is not Easter yet, so it’s not time for celebration. The day is usually spent working on the final preparations for the biggest feast of the Church year. The list of suggested activities is long, but highlights are decorating Easter eggs and attending a special Easter food blessing.
  • For families with smaller children, you could create a miniature Easter garden, with a tomb. The figure of the risen Christ will be placed in the garden on Easter morning.
  • Another activity for families is creation of a paschal candle to use at home. [youtube SuW5l0Nn4Ic 650]

Blue Bell Ice Cream suspends operations at Oklahoma facility

Blue Bell Ice Cream has suspended operations at its Oklahoma plant after health officials linked the deaths of three people to contaminated ice cream.

“We are taking this step out of an abundance of caution to ensure that we are doing everything possible to provide our consumers with safe products and to preserve the trust we have built with them and their families for more than a century,” the company said in a statement on April 3.

Last month, Blue Bell and health officials said a 3-ounce cup of ice cream contaminated with listeriosis was traced to a plant in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. The now-recalled ice cream product — cups of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla — is not sold in retail locations and is shipped in bulk to “institutional accounts” such as hospitals in 23 states that comprise less than 5% of the company’s sales.

“We recommend that consumers do not eat any Blue Bell brand products made at the company’s Oklahoma facility and that retailers and institutions do not sell or serve them,” the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on April 3.Blue Bell Ice Cream Listeria

Ten products recalled earlier in March were from a production line at a plant in Brenham, Texas, the company’s headquarters.

The recall, the first in Blue Bell’s 108-year history, began when five patients at Via Christi St. Francis hospital in Wichita, Kansas, became ill with listeriosis while hospitalized at some point from December 2013 to January 2015. Officials determined at least four drank milkshakes that contained Blue Bell ice cream. Three of the patients later died.

Listeriosis is a life-threatening infection caused by eating food contaminated with bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes, according to the CDC. The disease primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

The CDC also said on April 3 that it has identified six patients with listeriosis between 2010 and 2014 that was indistinguishable from that found in the 3-ounce cup ice cream product traced to the Oklahoma plant.

Four of the six patients were hospitalized in Texas for unrelated problems before developing listeriosis, according to the CDC.

The one patient for whom information is available reported eating ice cream in a Texas hospital before developing listeriosis and the Texas Department of State Health Services reported the hospital had received Blue Bell brand ice cream cups, the CDC said.

The “investigation to determine whether these illnesses are related to exposure to Blue Bell products is ongoing,” the CDC said.

Blue Bell said it will conduct a “careful and complete examination” of its Oklahoma plant “to determine the exact cause of the contamination.”

“Once our investigation is complete and we have made all necessary improvements, it will return to operation,” according to Blue Bell’s statement.

“Our other plants continue to operate and supply our products to retail stores and institutional customers.”

The FDA has been notified of Blue Bell’s decision to voluntarily shut down the plant, the company said.

In addition to the Broken Arrow plant, Blue Bell has two plants in Brenham and one in Sylacauga, Alabama.

The recalled ice cream had been shipped to Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming.

Fidel Castro makes first public appearance in more than a year

Fidel Castro made his first public appearance in more than a year on Monday, March 30, greeting a delegation of Venezuelans, official media reported on April 4.

The 88-year-old former Cuban appeared to be full of vitality, official media reported.

It was his first known appearance outside his home since Cuba in December agreed to normalize relations with the US, Fidel Castro’s longtime adversary.

Official media showed images of a seated Fidel Castro shaking hands with the visiting Venezuelans through the window of his vehicle, wearing a baseball cap and a windbreaker.

Photo Miami Herald
Photo Miami Herald

There was no explanation why five days passed before the encounter was reported in Cuba.

Fidel Castro met at a school with 33 Venezuelans, who were on a solidarity mission to Cuba, for about 90 minutes. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, oil-rich Venezuela has become Communist Cuba’s closest ally and chief benefactor.

The former leader impressed the Venezuelans with a firm, long handshake and a lucid mind, the newspaper Juventud Rebelde reported in a writer’s first-person account.

Fidel Castro relayed “multiple details about life in Venezuela, especially now that this great nation has become the bull’s eye for imperial greed,” the report said, in apparent reference to U.S. sanctions on Venezuela that declared the South American nation a national security threat.

“Fidel is full of vitality,” the report said.

Fidel Castro’s last previous public sighting came on January 8, 2014, at the opening of a Havana cultural center sponsored by one of his favorite Cuban artists, Alexis Leyva, alias Kcho.

In December 2014, President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro, Fidel Castro’s younger brother, announced they would re-establish diplomatic ties, opening a new era in the previously turbulent relations that arose after the Castros came to power in 1959.

Fidel Castro stepped down due to illness provisionally in 2006 and definitively in 2008, handing off to his younger brother Raul, now 83. Fidel Castro writes an occasional newspaper column, receives dignitaries at home, and rarely appears in public.

His current role in policy-making is unknown. Many Cubans presume Raul Castro consults with his brother on major decisions, and Fidel Castro’s long silence after the December announcement raised questions about his health and whether he agreed with the rapprochement with the Americans.

Joni Mitchell’s health status improved

Joni Mitchell is “getting stronger each day” after being hospitalized earlier this week, a statement published on her website says.

The 71-year-old Canadian-born singer-songwriter was found unresponsive in her Los Angeles home on March 31.

A statement released on Joni Mitchell’s website on April 3 said the singer was “resting comfortably”.

It is still not clear what Joni Mitchell is being treated for.Joni Mitchell Morgellons disease

“We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day,” the statement said.

In December 2014, Joni Mitchell told Billboard magazine that she had a rare skin condition, Morgellons disease, which prevented her from performing.

“I can’t sing any more – don’t miss it. I can’t play any more – don’t miss it. I’ve got all these instruments laying around and hopefully one day I’ll pick them up,” Joni Mitchell was quoted as saying.

Morgellons is a controversial condition and is not recognized by mainstream medical authorities.

Sufferers say it is characterized by crawling and stinging sensations under the skin but many in the medical community believe it is a psychiatric disorder.

Kenya attack: Five suspects arrested over Garissa University assault

Five suspects have been detained in Kenya over the al-Shabab attack on Garissa University campus on April 2 which left almost 150 people dead, officials say.

Some of the suspects were arrested while trying to flee to neighboring Somalia, the internal security ministry said.

At least 148 people – mostly students – were killed when gunmen attacked a university campus in Garissa.

Al-Shabab has since pledged a “long, gruesome war” against Kenya.

The militant group said its attacks were in retaliation for acts by Kenya’s security forces, which are part of the African Union’s mission in Somalia against al-Shabab.

In Garissa, a survivor has emerged from hiding more than two days after the assault was unleashed.

The 19-year-old girl was found unhurt in a cupboard on April 4, but security officials had to bring in a teacher to convince her that it was safe to come out.

She told reporters that she drank body lotion when she felt hungry.

Four other people were found alive on the campus on April 3, including two suspects. One was said to be a Tanzanian national with no known links to the university.

While many of the survivors spoke to the media, little is known so far about those who were killed.

Their bodies have been flown to Nairobi for identification, as local mortuaries have been unable to cope, and many of the students killed came from other parts of Kenya.

There has been criticism in Garissa, which is 100 miles from the Somali border, at how the security services dealt with the attack.

Only two guards were on duty at the time of the assault, despite official warnings that an attack on an institution of higher learning was likely.

One survivor said the students had raised security issues late last year. Another said the gunmen appeared to know the site well.

In an address to the nation after the attack, President Uhuru Kenyatta said he had instructed the police chief to speed up the training of 10,000 recruits, because Kenya had “suffered unnecessarily” because of a shortage of security personnel.

Police in neighboring Uganda say they have received information suggesting a similar attack is being planned there.

Lucille Ball fans want horrific statue of actress to be removed

Lucille Ball fans are not happy with a public statue erected in her hometown Celoron, New York.

They complained the statue is “frightening” and looks nothing like I Love Lucy star, and are now looking into fundraising options to fix it.

Celoron residents have been clamoring to refurbish the statue on a Facebook group called We Love Lucy! Get Rid of this Statue.

The 400-pound life-size bronze statue made by artist Dave Poulin was erected in 2009 after being privately commissioned.

Replacing the statue is not easy.

“It would be a lot of money,” Celoron mayor Scott Schrecengost told the local Post-Journal.

Photo Facebook
Photo Facebook

“Over the past couple of years, I’ve reached out to Dave Poulin, and have had at least four conversations with him about redoing the statue. He finally came back and said he wanted $8,000 to $10,000 to do it. I’ve also reached out to several other sculptors in the region, and some said they would do it, but we’re still looking at about $5,000. We’d like to work with the original sculptor, and wish he would stand behind his work enough to step up and fix it for free.”

The mayor also assured locals that he has no intention of using taxpayer money to fund the statue renovation, nor is the statue taking precedence over his more pressing duties.

Meanwhile, according to the Facebook group: “Dave Poulin, is going to give a phone interview with Good Morning America tomorrow morning. Saturday Morning. I hope you will all turn in to see what he says. Let’s be open minded, But… he must be forewarned that 63 thousand people have read this page and there are over 4 thousand people that have “Liked” this page. We are watching. Let’s hope he announces it is being melted down and the metal sold to help charity. As I have stated before I am 100 percent against another penny being spent to “fix” this statue.”

Zimbabwe: Joyce Mujuru expelled from Robert Mugabe’s ruling party

Zimbabwe’s ex-VP Joyce Mujuru has been expelled from President Robert Mugabe’s ruling party, Zanu-PF.

Zanu-PF said Joyce Mujuru had plotted to remove Robert Mugabe from office and brought the party into disrepute.

Joyce Mujuru had been seen as a likely successor to Robert Mugabe but was sacked at the end of last year.

She was accused of corruption and plotting to kill the president – allegations she denied.

Robert Mugabe, 91, will have been in power for 35 years when Zimbabwe marks its independence from the UK later this month.Joyce Mujuru and Robert Mugabe

The first lady, Grace Mugabe – who is now a senior figure in the Zanu-PF Party – has been very vocal against Joyce Mujuru in public.

Joyce Mujuru fought alongside Robert Mugabe in the 1970s guerrilla war against white minority rule and was known as “Spill Blood”.

Zanu-PF spokesman Simon Khaya Moyo said in a statement that the ruling party’s top decision-makers had agreed to Joyce Mujuru’s dismissal citing 10 reasons.

These included plotting to remove Robert Mugabe from office, alleged corruption and bringing the party into disrepute – charges she has previously denied.

“The politburo felt that she lacked the quality of strong moral principles, honesty and decency and therefore ceases to be a member of Zanu-PF,” Khaya Moyo said.

Roebrt Mugabe has not publicly indicated a preferred candidate to take over his presidency.

However, in December 2014, Robert Mugabe purged the government of several ministers, including Joyce Mujuru, and appointed Emmerson Mnangagwa as his deputy, making the former justice minister the favorite to succeed him.

Didymus Mutasa, one of the sacked ministers and a former confidante of Robert Mugabe, was expelled from Zanu-PF earlier this year.

Anthony Ray Hinton: Alabama prisoner released after 30 years on death row

Alabama death row inmate Anthony Ray Hinton has been freed after nearly 30 years.

Anthony Ray Hinton, 58, was convicted of murdering two restaurant managers in Birmingham in 1985, but was granted a new trial last year.

Tests on bullets found at the crime scene could not be connected to a gun found at Anthony Ray Hinton’s home, prompting prosecutors to drop the case.

Anthony Ray Hinton’s lawyer, Bryan Stevenson, said his client was convicted because he could not afford better legal counsel.

Walking out of the Jefferson Country Jail in Birmingham, Anthony Ray Hinton hugged family members and said: “Thank you, Jesus.”Anthony Ray Hinton exenorated

“All they had to do was test the gun,” Anthony Ray Hinton said, explaining why he shouldn’t have had to sit on death row for nearly three decades.

Bullets from the crime scene were the only evidence that linked Anthony Ray Hinton to the murders.

Prosecutors said that modern forensic methods failed to link the bullets to a revolver found in Anthony Ray Hinton’s home.

“Every day, every month, every year that the state took from him, they took something that they don’t have the power to give back,” said Bryan Stevenson.

At his first trial, Anthony Ray Hinton’s lawyer believed his client only had $1,000 to hire an expert that could defend against the prosecution’s allegations about the bullets.

The lawyer hired the only expert willing to take the job at that rate, and jurors reportedly laughed as the expert struggled to answer questions during cross-examination.

The US Supreme Court ruled last year that Anthony Ray Hinton did not have adequate legal counsel at the first trial and said the case should be reconsidered at a second trial.

Good Friday: Pope Francis leads traditional Via Crucis at Colosseum

Pope Francis has begun leading the traditional Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) at the Colosseum in Rome at 9.15 pm local time (3.15pm EDT) on Good Friday.

The meditations for the 14 Stations of the Cross have been written this year by Monsenior Renato Corti, Bishop Emeritus of Novara in Italy.

Pope Francis has repeatedly lamented Christian suffering in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. Reflecting this concern, among those chosen to take turns carrying the cross in the Way of the Cross procession in the ancient arena were faithful from Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Egypt and China. Several Italian families also carried the lightweight cross for a few steps.Pope Francis Via Crucis 2015

Standing under a red canopy on the warm evening, Pope Francis listened to prayers affirming the right of religious freedom. Tens of thousands of tourists, pilgrims and Romans held candles as they watched.

Good Friday recalls Jesus’ death by crucifixion.

Earlier this afternoon, Pope Francis presided at the liturgy of the Passion of Our Lord in St. Peter’s basilica. As is customary, the homily was given by the preacher of the papal household, Father Raniero Cantalamessa, OFMCap.

After several Holy Week ceremonies, Pope Francis will celebrate Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Square Sunday, April 5.

Hayley Okines: 100-year-old teenager dies from progeria at 17

Progeria campaigner Hayley Okines, who became known as the “100-year-old teenager”, has died aged 17.

Hayley Okines was born with Progeria, a rare condition that caused her body to age eight times faster than normal.

The rare ageing disease usually debuts within the first two years of birth, when symptoms such as slow growth and hair loss began to appear. The average life expectancy for a child with the disease is just 13, but Hayley Ikines defied all odds and lived for another four years.

Hayley Okines of Bexhill-on-Sea, England, became a spokesperson and fundraiser for progeria and campaigned for greater awareness throughout her teens. She released her autobiography at the age of 14, entitled Old Before My Time.Hayley Okines dead at 17

The girl had been treated in hospital for pneumonia over the past few days and returned home on April 2. She died on the same day, the BBC reported.

Hyaley’s mother, Kerry Okines, confirmed her death on Facebook, writing: “My baby has gone somewhere better. She took her last breath in my arms at 9.39pm.”

Progeria Research Foundation also paid an emotional tribute to Hayley Okines on its Facebook page: “The entire Progeria family mourns together with many as we say goodbye to Hayley Okines, our smart, beautiful and spirited English Rose.”

North Korea test-fires four short-range missiles into sea

According to South Korean military officials, North Korea has test-fired four short-range missiles into the sea off its west coast.

In a statement, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the missiles had a range of about 87 miles.

The missiles were fired from Dongchang-ri in the north of the country on April 3, the statement said.

North Korea often conducts missile tests in protest at US-South Korean military drills, one of which is ongoing.

The US and South Korea say the annual exercises are for defense training purposes, but Pyongyang calls them a rehearsal for invasion. They are always a trigger for a surge in tensions between the two Koreas.

When a drill began in March, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles, and on March 13 it fired seven ground-to-air missiles into the sea to coincide with the end of one part of the drill, Operation Key Resolve.

The current drill, Foal Eagle, is continuing.

A JCS spokesman said today’s test “appeared to have been supervised by Kim Jong-un”, the AFP news agency reports.
