Argentina Elections 2015: Daniel Scioli Leads Vote but May Face Runoff

Daniel Scioli is leading exit polls in Argentina’s election, but it is not clear if the vote will go into a runoff.

The center-left candidate was handpicked by two-term President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.

The head of the campaign led by Daniel Scioli’s main challenger, center-right Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri, says the election is heading for a second round.

A run-off would be held on November 22.

Argentina’s C5N television network said Daniel Scioli had won by “a large margin”.

To win outright, a candidate needs 45% of the vote or a minimum of 40% as well as a 10-point lead over the nearest rival.

Daniel Scioli, the governor of Buenos Aires province, is a former world power boating champion who lost his right arm in a race in 1989.

Last week, he pledged tax cuts for workers earning under a certain income, a move expected to affect half a million people.

Daniel Scioli has also vowed to bring down Argentina’s inflation to single digits in less than four years and promises to introduce policy changes to invigorate the economy.

Another candidate, Sergio Massa, a former ally of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, is polling behind Mauricio Macri. There are three other names on the ballot paper, with 32 million people eligible to vote.

Long queues formed outside polling stations from the early hours on October 25.

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who stands down after eight years in power, says she leaves Argentines a better country.

“We are voting today in a completely normal country,” she said after casting her vote in the Patagonian town of Rio Gallegos.

In previous decades, Argentines always went to the polls “in the middle of a serious crisis,” Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner added.

She said achieving stability and leaving Argentines “a normal country” was the promise made by her late husband, Neston Kirchner, when he took office in 2003.

Nestor Kirchner died in 2010, three years after handing over the presidency to his wife.

Whoever wins Argentina’s presidency faces significant economic challenges.

While Argentina gained strength after a financial crisis in 2002, its economy, the third-largest in Latin America, has slowed in recent years, with GDP growing by only 0.5% in 2014.

Ivory Coast Elections 2015: President Alassane Ouattara Running for Second Term

Ivory Coast is holding the first presidential election since the civil war ended in 2011.

The bitterly contested presidential election has been marred by prominent opposition candidates pulling out, citing widespread irregularities.

Ivory Coast’s incumbent President Alassane Ouattara is running for a second term in the world’s largest cocoa producer.

Some 3,000 people were killed in the conflict which ended with Alassane Ouattara coming to power in 2011.

The conflict broke out after former President Laurent Gbagbo refused to accept Alassane Ouattara’s victory in the 2010 election.

Laurent Gbagbo was subsequently arrested and is due to stand trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he denies war crimes charges.

Three of the 10 opposition candidates, including former PM Charles Konan Banny, have withdrawn from the election.

They allege that the process has been rigged to guarantee victory for Alassane Ouattara, a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) economist.

Alassane Ouattara denies the charge, and has called on people to turn out in massive numbers.

Memories of the conflict are still fresh in people’s minds, especially in strongholds of Laurent Gbagbo, correspondents say.

Tanzania Elections 2015: Ruling CCM Party Faces Challenge from Ukawa Coalition

Tanzanians are expected to polls in the country’s most tightly contested general elections, as a new opposition coalition tries to end the governing party’s 54-year grip on power.

There has been a high turnout at voting stations, reports say.

Opinion polls have put the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party ahead, but the result is expected to be close.

Four opposition groups are backing one candidate, a former prime minister, in the presidential race.

Some of the major issues for the almost 23 million registered voters include access to clean water, improved health care and better education.

President Jakaya Kikwete, who is standing down after two terms, has called for peace ahead of the election, adding that “anyone who tries to cause trouble will be dealt with”.John Magufuli introduced by Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete

The CCM was formed in 1977 from a merger of two post-colonial parties and has effectively been in power since independence in 1961.

Tanzania’s works minister, John Magufuli, 55, has promised change and to improve on the pace of progress laid down by the previous CCM government.

John Magufuli has promised to end the country’s power shortages and exploit Tanzania’s natural gas discoveries.

“My government will put emphasis on fighting corruption, job creation and industrialization,” he said on October 24.

John Magufuli is nicknamed The Bulldozer for driving a program to build roads across Tanzania.

Ukawa coalition’s candidate Edward Lowassa, 62, decided to leave the CCM when it did not pick him as its presidential candidate earlier this year. Four opposition parties rallied behind Edward Lowassa as a coalition candidate.

“We must stop being a nation of beggars,” he told a rally on October 24.

“It is a shame for Tanzania to still be poor after 54 years of independence.”

Edward Lowassa has already served as prime minister, but had to resign over a corruption scandal in the energy sector. He continues to deny involvement in the scandal.

South Korea Fires Five Shots at North Korean Boat in Yellow Sea Waters

South Korean navy has fired shots at a North Korean boat that strayed into its waters, the Yonhap, South Korea’s largest news agency, reports.

Five shots were fired at 15:30 on October 24 when the patrol boat crossed the de facto maritime border, Yonhap said.

North Korea disputes the maritime border in the Yellow Sea and has crossed it before.

Pyongyang called the shooting a “serious provocation”.

According to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency, the boat was conducting a “routine” operation.

The line was breached several times in February 2014.

Ships between North and South Korea briefly exchanged fire near Yeonpyeong island last October.

The incident comes as the two Koreas hold the second of two reunions for family members separated by the Korean War.

The family reunions taking place this week are only the second round in the past five years.

Congo-Brazzaville Referendum to Decide on Denis Sassou Nguesso Third Term

Voters in Congo-Brazzaville are expected to polls in a referendum on constitutional changes that would allow President Denis Sassou Nguesso to stand for a third term.

Opposition leaders have called for a boycott after a number of protesters died in clashes with security forces.

Under the country’s current constitution, Denis Sassou Nguesso cannot seek re-election because he is over the age of 70 and has already served two terms.

Denis Sassou Nguesso first came to power in 1979.

He is now coming to the end of his second seven-year term.

Denis Sassou Nguesso won the last election 2009 with nearly 79% of the vote in a poll boycotted by half the opposition candidates.

Tens of thousands of people took part in a peaceful demonstration against the referendum in September.

Four people died on October 20, when security forces dispersed further protests in the capital Brazzaville and the economic capital Pointe-Noire.

Several activists and opposition leaders reported arrests and intimidation.

The outcome of today’s vote and the Congolese people’s response to it will be watched closely in the region, as presidents in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda are also expected to try to run for third terms in forthcoming elections.

There have been months of unrest in Burundi, where President Pierre Nkurunziza was re-elected for a controversial third term in July.

Among the changes being voted on are scrapping the presidential age and two-term limits.

Texting and internet services were cut and public meetings banned ahead of the referendum, residents said.

Congo-Brazzaville opposition has been campaigning under the slogan “Sassoufit”, a pun on the French expression for “that’s enough” (Ca suffit).

Poland Elections 2015: Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s Eurosceptic Law and Justice Party Tipped to Win

Poles are voting in the country’s parliamentary elections, with the conservatives hoping to return to power after eight years in opposition.

Opinion polls in run-up to the election put the Law and Justice party, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski well ahead of Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz’s Civic Platform party.

Law and Justice party regained the presidency in May when Andrzej Duda won the poll.

The party is most strongly supported in rural areas and by those who close to Poland’s powerful Roman Catholic Church.

Civic Platform has been hit by disrepute, with a number of ministers caught up in an eavesdropping scandal last year.

On October 23, Deputy Justice Minister Monika Zbrojewska was fired after being charged with DUI.Poland elections 2015

Europe’s refugee crisis also proved to be a key topic of debate before the election. While the government has agreed to take in 7,000 refugees, opposition parties have spoken out against the move.

Last week, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, 66, was criticized for suggesting refugees could bring diseases and parasites to Poland.

He is not running as prime minister, and has instead nominated Beata Szydlo, a relative unknown, as the party’s choice for the post.

However, some observers think Jaroslaw Kaczynski will take on the top job himself, if Law and Justice scores a convincing victory.

The result of the election is likely to be closely followed among Eurosceptic nations.

While Civic Platform sought close ties with the EU, one Law and Justice party member told Reuters they were keen for “a less bureaucratic, more cost-effective EU that does not seek deeper political integration”.

Argentina Elections 2015: Voters to Pick Replacement for President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner

Argentina is voting to choose the country’s next president in a general election that ends 12 years of rule under the Kirchners.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has served two consecutive terms and, under Argentina’s constitution, cannot run again.

Cristina Fernandez’s hand-picked successor, left-winger Daniel Scioli, is leading polls.

However, Daniel Scioli he is expected to face stiff competition from Mauricio Macri, the centre-right mayor of Buenos Aires.

Another candidate, Sergio Massa, a former Kirchner ally, is polling behind Mauricio Macri, while there are three other names on the ballot paper.

Today is the first round of voting – if no candidate gets more than 45% of the vote, or gets a minimum of 40% as well as a 10-point lead, there will be a run-off on November 22.

Whoever wins the presidency faces significant economic challenges.

While Argentina gained strength after a financial crisis in 2002, its economy, the third largest in Latin America, has slowed down in recent years, with GDP growing by only 0.5% in 2014.

The government is also locked in a battle against American hedge funds who disagree with how is wants to restructure $100 billion of debt on which it defaulted in 2001.

While the companies successfully sued Argentina for repayment, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner refused to pay.

She succeeded her husband Nestor Kirchner as president. He died in 2010, three years after handing over the presidency to his wife.

Daniel Scioli, the governor of Buenos Aires province, is a former world powerboating champion who lost his right arm in a boat race in 1989.

Last week, he pledged tax cuts for middle-class workers earning under a certain income, a move expected to affect half a million people.

Daniel Scioli has also vowed to bring down Argentina’s inflation to single digits in less than four years and promises to introduce policy changes to invigorate the economy.

Like Daniel Scioli, Mauricio Macri is married to a former model. He is a former president of Boca Juniors, Argentina’s most successful soccer club.

While Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has sought to press Argentina’s claims for the disputed UK territory of the Falkland Islands, Daniel Scioli says he would not appoint a Falklands minister, and would seek closer ties with London.

Montenegro Protests Turn Violent in Podgorica

Montenegro police fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters demanding the resignation of PM Milo Djukanovic.

Demonstrators in the country’s capital, Podgorica, chanted “Milo, thief!” and demanded fair elections organized by a transitional government.

Some threw flares and fireworks at police guarding parliament.

Fifteen policemen were injured and 24 protesters sought treatment after being tear gassed, the interior minister said.

A leader of the Democratic Front opposition group, Andrija Mandic, was been questioned by police after the rally, along with another protest leader, Slaven Radunovic.

Milo Djukanovic has been in power for much of the past two decades, after holding prominent positions in the republic from the early 1990s when it was part of the former Yugoslavia.

In 2012, he won elections and became prime minister for the third time since Montenegro became independent after splitting from neighboring Serbia in 2006.

Montenegro’s government hopes to be invited to join the NATO in December, but many Montenegrins with historic ties to Russia are opposed to this.

The country’s general elections are scheduled for early 2016.

Oklahoma Car Crash: Four People Killed and 44 Injured at OSU Homecoming Parade

Four people have been killed and other 44 injured after a car crashed into a crowd of spectators during a university parade in Oklahoma, police say.

A local woman, 25, has been arrested on suspicion of DUI after her car hit the crowd in Stillwater.

Witnesses described dozens of bodies being flung into the air.

Police said it was one of the worst accidents they had seen in 30 years.

The initial death toll was three, but a two-year-old boy died later from his injuries.

Five children and three adults remain in hospital, some in critical condition, officials say.

The car crash happened as the crowds were watching a homecoming parade – a traditional event welcoming back Oklahoma State University (OSU) alumni.

The vehicle is reported to have hit a stationary police motorbike – which had no rider at the time – before plunging into spectators at the homecoming parade.

Stillwater Mayor Gina Noble said that the incident had left people in the town heartbroken, while OSU President Burns Hargis said that what was supposed to be “a wholesome, happy event” had been besmirched by “a terrible tragedy”.

Israel-Jordan Deal on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif Holy Site

Secretary of State John Kerry has announced that Israel and Jordan have agreed on moves aimed at reducing tensions surrounding Jerusalem Jerusalem’s Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif holy site.

Issues relating to the complex have been at the center of violence between Israelis and Palestinians in recent weeks.

John Kerry was speaking after talks in Jordan, the formal custodian of what is known to Jews as the Temple Mount and as Haram al-Sharif to Muslims.

He said Israel had renewed a pledge to maintain existing rules there.

In the latest upsurge of violence, at least 8 Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded in knife or gun attacks by Palestinians, following rumors that Israel was planning to change the rules.Jerusalem Temple Mount Haram al-Sharif Holy Site

About 50 Palestinians, including several of the attackers, have been killed in recent weeks.

John Kerry, who is on a tour of the region, met Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah of Jordan in Amman on October 24.

“All the violence and the incitement to violence must stop. Leaders must lead,” John Kerry told reporters.

The steps he announced include round-the-clock video monitoring and Israel’s agreement to reaffirm Jordan’s historic role as custodian of the religious complex.

Israel says it has not challenged the status quo on the Temple Mount and has no intention of doing so.

John Kerry met Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu on October 22, and said the talks had raised ideas that were worth exploring.

On October 24, John Kerry will travel to Saudi Arabia for talks with regional leaders.

In the latest violence, Israeli police said they shot dead a Palestinian attacker in the northern West Bank on Saturday, October 24.

Maureen O’Hara Dies in Idaho Aged 95

Hollywood icon Maureen O’Hara has died aged 95, her manager announced.

The Irish-American actress, one of the last living stars from the golden age of Hollywood, died in her sleep at her home in Boise, Idaho, Johnny Nicoletti said.

Maureen O’Hara starred in the 1941 multi-Oscar winning drama, How Green Was My Valley, set in a Welsh mining village.

The actress also regularly featured alongside John Wayne, in movies such as The Quiet Man.

Born in Dublin, Maureen O’Hara moved to Hollywood in 1939 and later became a US citizen.

“Her characters were feisty and fearless, just as she was in real life,” her family said in a statement.

“She was also proudly Irish and spent her entire lifetime sharing her heritage and the wonderful culture of the Emerald Isle with the world.”

Korean Family Reunions 2015: Second Round Held at Mount Kumgang Resort

0

About 250 South Koreans have met relatives in North Korea, in the second of two organized reunions for family members separated by the Korean War.

The South Korean group has been allowed to travel for three days of meetings at Mount Kumgang resort in North Korea.

Another group attended reunions earlier this week.

For most of those attending it is the first time that they have had any contact in over 60 years.

Millions of Korean people ended up separated from loved ones by the physical division of the Korean peninsula.

The reunions taking place this week are only the second round in the past five years.

The South Koreans were chosen using a computerized lottery system from among thousands who applied.

Often accompanied by family members, they traveled in a convoy of buses from South Korea to meet their relatives.

Given their age and the infrequent nature of these reunions, they are unlikely to ever see each other again.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Play Artwork Released

The artwork for the upcoming play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been released.

Published on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter website Pottermore, the images show a young boy in a nest with wings.

The play, split over two parts, is designed to be seen either on the same night, or over consecutive evenings.

Producers have also announced it is going to be a sequel to J.K. Rowling’s books, focusing on Harry Potter’s son, Albus Severus.

“While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted,” a synopsis reads.Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

“As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

Previews will start in June 2016, at the Palace Theatre in London.

Early performances will have some cheap tickets on sale for just £10 per part, rising to £15 for the official run.

Harry Potter fans have suggested the nest and wings in the picture are reminiscent of a Golden Snitch, the smallest ball used in a game of Quidditch.

The final Harry Potter book ends with an epilogue – set 19 years after the main plot concludes – featuring Harry and his now-wife Ginny seeing their son off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Previously J.K. Rowling has refused to give away many details about the plot of the play, saying she did not “want to say too much more, because I don’t want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans”.

A new Harry Potter movie starring Eddie Redmayne – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – based on a screenplay written by J.K. Rowling, is expected in 2016.

Shining Hotel Reveals Plans to Build Horror Museum in Colorado

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, that inspired Stephen King to write his novel The Shining, has announced plans to build a horror museum and movie center.

Last week, the landmark hotel near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park released plans to create a building that would house a horror-themed museum, film production studio and film archive.

Simon Pegg and Elijah Wood are among those backing the project, which is seeking $11.5 million in state funds for a “year-round horror destination”.

Elijah Wood said there was “no better place for… a permanent home for the celebration of horror”.

Photo Wikipedia
Photo Wikipedia

The Stanley was the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King’s 1977 novel.

When Stanley Kubrick filmed the book in 1980, though, the ghost-ridden hotel was “played” by Timberline Lodge in Oregon.

If built, the $24 million facility will include a 500-seat auditorium, a museum and a 3,000 square foot soundstage.

Hotel owner John Cullen said the centre was “my chance to give back to the millions of horror fans around the world who have supported… the hotel for so many years.”

Other names on the center’s founding board include director George A. Romero, famed for Night of the Living Dead and other classic zombie movies.

Stephen King, now 68, wrote a sequel to The Shining, called Doctor Sleep, in 2013.

Barack Obama’s Grumpy Cat Face at DNC Women’s Leadership Forum

President Barack Obama has hit out at his Republican rivals likening them to “Grumpy Cat”, the notoriously unhappy feline.

As he addressed the DNC Women’s Leadership Forum on October 23, Barack Obama accused the Republicans of being “so down on America” and always suggesting that “everything is terrible”.

Photo ABC News

“I mean, they are…They are gloomy. They are like Grumpy Cat,” Barack Obama added, referencing the feline internet sensation.

The comparison was accompanied by an imitation of the Grumpy Cat frown – an image familiar to fans of the Internet meme that ultimately spawned a product line and a Christmas movie.

“I mean, I know it’s political season, but you listen to [the Republicans] and they’ve constructed this entire separate reality. It’s like the Twilight Zone,” Barack Obama continued.

Several times during his 23-minute speech, Barack Obama referred to Republicans’ statements as “crazy”.

Ahmed Adeeb: Maldives Vice-President Arrested over Alleged Assassination Plot

Maldives Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb has been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate the president, the home minister says.

Ahmed Adeeb was in detention and being charged with high treason, Umar Naseer said on Twitter.

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen narrowly escaped injury when a blast struck the boat he was using to return home from the airport late last month.

In recent years, the Maldives has been rocked by political infighting.

Abdulla Yameen’s election has been the subject of drawn-out wrangling.

Security has been tightened in the capital Male amid fears of “turmoil” triggered by the arrest, says the Maldivian newspaper Haveeru.

“By early morning Saturday, trucks loaded with policemen and soldiers were seen on nearly every street,” it reports.Ahmed Adeeb arrested

Four others were also arrested on October 24, the Maldives Independent website quoted police sub inspector Abdulla Nawaz as saying, but he gave no further details.

The website said Ahmed Adeeb’s arrest had “surprised and enthralled many Maldivians”.

President Abdulla Yameen and his wife were travelling to Male from the island where the airport is located on September 28 when their speedboat was hit by the bomb blast.

They had been to the hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The president was unhurt, but his wife and a number of others were injured when the device went off under a seat normally – but not in this instance – occupied by Abdulla Yameen.

Officials described the attack as an assassination attempt and had arrested two senior police officers – a week after the president fired his defense minister.

On October 24, Ahmed Adeeb too was arrested at the airport as he returned from an official overseas visit, police confirmed.

Home Minister Umar Naseer said the vice-president was being held on a prison island.

Ahmed Adeeb, who has denied any links to the explosion, had only been vice-president for three months.

Ahmed Adeeb came to office when the previous vice-president was sacked by Abdulla Yameen, also on charges of treason.

Most Powerful Storms in Last 35 Years

0

Worldwide, the number of intense tropical storms has increased 80%, according to an article published by Science magazine in 2005.

According to recent studies, while the total number of hurricanes per year did not increase, the percentage of category 4 and 5 hurricanes did sharply increase during the last 35-40 years.

Most researchers agree that the warming oceans are the result of rising amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, also known as global warming. This process occurs when there are high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Global warming and hurricanes are linked because heat essentially is the fuel of these storms. Researchers have described hurricanes as heat engines that draw their energy upward from the warm ocean water to drive their winds; the increase in ocean temperatures is like throwing a log on a fire.Typhoon Haiyan Philippines

  • Typhoon Tip, October 1979: largest and most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded with wind speeds of 190mph, killed 99 people in its path across the Pacific, mostly in Japan
  • Hurricane Allen, August 1980: strongest Atlantic hurricane by wind speed, with sustained winds of 190mph, caused nearly 300 deaths in Haiti and severe damage in the US state of Texas
  • Bangladesh cyclone known as 02B, April 1991: at least 138,000 died and up to 10 million made homeless after a 20ft storm surge
  • Odisha or Paradip cyclone, October 1991: the strongest ever recorded in the northern Indian Ocean, killed about 10,000 people, mostly in India
  • Hurricane Katrina, August 2005: killed at least 1,836 people after striking states of Louisiana and Mississippi and was the costliest storm in history, causing $81.2 billion in damage (with wind speeds of 175mph)
  • Hurricane Wilma, October 2005: most intense tropical cyclone in the Atlantic basin with wind speeds of 185mph, killing 87 people on its path through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico
  • Typhoon Haiyan, November 2013: the strongest storm recorded at landfall, with one-minute sustained wind speeds of 197mph, it devastated parts of the Philippines, killing at least 6,300 people

Mexico: Hurricane Patricia Downgraded to Category Two Storm

Hurricane Patricia still poses a threat of floods and landslides as it brings heavy rain to parts of Mexico, President Enrique Pena Nieto has warned.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said Hurricane Patricia – the strongest storm recorded in the Americas – had so far caused less damage than feared.

The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Hurricane Patricia hit as a Category Five storm – the highest classification.

The hurricane has since been downgraded to a Category Two tropical storm.

The storm touched down in western Mexico on October 23, bringing destructive winds and rain, but heavy damage appears to have been avoided.

The NHC said winds had decreased to 100 mph as Hurricane Patricia weakened over land.

While still over the ocean, Patricia had winds of 200 mph at its peak, which made it the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Western hemisphere.

Thousands of residents and tourists on Mexico’s Pacific coast were evacuated and moved inland.Hurricane Patricia Mexico

Hurricane Patricia is now moving north-northeastward inland over northern Mexico.

The states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, and Guerrero are in particular danger from the high rainfall expected on October 24, the center says.

Total rainfall of 8 to 12 inches is “likely to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides,” it added.

“The first reports confirm that the damage has been smaller than that corresponding to a hurricane of this magnitude,” President Enrique Pena Nieto said in a TV address.

Mexican federal police said only “minor landslides and fallen trees” had so far been reported in Colima.

However, the Mexican government has warned that ash from the Colima volcano, which has become increasingly active this year, could combine with heavy rainfall to trigger huge mudflows.

Some 400,000 people live in vulnerable areas, according to Mexico’s National Disaster Fund.

Hurricane Patricia reached land in the Cuixmala area of the western Jalisco state, some 55 miles from the port city of Manzanillo.

The NHC said Patricia hit the coast with winds of 165mph.

At one point before landfall, the hurricane’s winds had been strong enough “to get a plane in the air and keep it flying”, World Meteorological Organization spokeswoman Claire Nullis said.

Video filmed in the port city of Manzanillo shortly before the hurricane struck showed trees bending in severe wind.

Residents had stocked up on food and other supplies, while shop owners boarded up windows.

Jalisco is home to the resort town of Puerto Vallarta, which appeared to have escaped the worst of the storm.

Police patrols in the resort urged people to leave the shorefront for safer areas at least three blocks inland, while loudspeakers ordered hotel residents to evacuate.

Puerto Vallarta airport, along with two others in the path of the storm, were closed.

Ukraine and Russia to Cease Direct Flights

As of Sunday, October 25, Ukraine will stop direct flights to Russia, as new sanctions initiated by Kiev come into effect.

Moscow first called Kiev’s ban on Russian airlines “madness”, then announced that it would mirror the move.

Ukraine now says flights will end at midnight on October 24, after last-minute crisis talks failed.

Up to 70,000 passengers a month will be affected.

The sanctions are intended to punish Russia for annexing Crimea and supporting armed rebels in eastern Ukraine. The fact that they have been introduced now, when a ceasefire is finally holding on the ground, shows how bitter relations remain.

Photo Reuters
Photo Reuters

Russia has accused Ukraine of shooting itself in the foot with the move, pointing out that most passengers are Ukrainian travelling to work in Russia, visiting relatives or in transit.

Two-thirds of all passengers travel on Russian airlines.

Russia’s transport minister has estimated that the loss in ticket sales to both countries will run to around $110 million a year.

The ban is already angering passengers from both countries.

Last-minute talks to find a compromise are under way – so far to no avail – and the chances of success look slim in this climate.

As of October 25, passengers will be forced to take longer, more expensive routes via third countries, or to brace themselves for a 13-hour trip by train.

Venezuela’s Central Bank Sues DolarToday over Cyberterrorism

Venezuela’s Central Bank has filed a lawsuit at a court in Delaware against American website DolarToday.

The bank accuses DolarToday of cyberterrorism and says its managers are sowing economic chaos in Venezuela.

It requested both an injunction and damages, accusing the site’s managers of fanning inflation in Venezuela.

DolarToday tracks the black market value of the Venezuelan currency, the bolivar.

The website publishes a rate in Venezuelan bolivars for the US dollar, which is far higher than the official one.Venezuela sues DolarToday

On October 23, DolarToday it quoted the dollar at 820 bolivars, which is 130 times higher than Venezuela’s strongest official rate of 6.3 bolivars and four times the government’s weakest rate of 200.

Venezuela uses a three-tier system to subsidize key imports with advantageous exchange rates.

DolarToday says it calculates its rate based on trades on Venezuela’s border with Colombia.

President Nicolas Maduro has in the past accused the website of being part of an international capitalist conspiracy against his socialist government.

Critics say currency controls and widespread government intervention in Venezuela’s economy have caused shortages of goods and shrinking GDP.

Nigeria Bomb Attacks: At Least 42 People Killed in Yola and Maiduguri

At least 42 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in two bomb attacks in north-eastern Nigeria, officials say.

Twenty seven people died when a bomb targeted a newly opened mosque in the town of Yola.

Earlier, 15 people were killed in a suicide bombing in Maiduguri.

It is not clear who carried out the bombings but the Islamist militant group Boko Haram has carried out many attacks in the area.

Boko Haram has targeted both Christians and Muslims who do not adhere to their ideology.

The first blast, in Maiduguri, occurred early on Friday, October 23, as worshippers arrived for dawn prayers.

An eyewitness told AFP that there was one suicide bomber involved.

The second, larger blast targeted worshippers attending Friday prayers at a newly inaugurated mosque in the Jimeta area of Yola.

Thousands of people have been killed and millions forced to leave their homes by Boko Haram violence in recent years.

Alzheimer’s Disease Predicted by Virtual Reality Test

0

A new study suggests that Alzheimer’s disease can be detected decades before onset, using a virtual reality test.

People aged 18 to 30 were asked to navigate through a virtual maze to test the function of certain brain cells.

According to German neuroscientists, those with a high genetic risk of Alzheimer’s could be identified by their performance.

The findings could help future research, diagnosis and treatment, researchers report in the journal Science.Virtual reality test for dementia

The scientists, led by Lukas Kunz of the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Bonn, say the high risk group navigated the maze differently and had reduced functioning of a type of brain cell involved in spatial navigation.

The findings could give an insight into why people with dementia can find navigating the world around them challenging, they say.

“Our results could provide a new basic framework for preclinical research on Alzheimer’s disease and may provide a neurocognitive explanation of spatial disorientation in Alzheimer’s disease,” Science report says.

Although genes play a role in dementia, their effects are complex with many unknowns.

South Africa Student Protests: Jacob Zuma Freezes Tuition Fees for 2016

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has suspended any increases in university tuition fees for 2016 after more than a week of student protests.

They have been the biggest student protests to hit South Africa since apartheid ended in 1994.

The students had rejected an earlier government offer to cap increases at 6%, down from the 10% to 12% proposed by the management of universities.

President Jacob Zuma announced the move as students gathered by his office in Pretoria.

Before Jacob Zuma’s TV address, police had been firing stun grenades and using water cannon to stop a small group of students breaking into the Union Building, the seat of government in Pretoria.South Africa tuition fees protests

On October 21, police clashed with students trying to force their way into the parliamentary complex in Cape Town.

The demonstrations have closed some of South Africa’s top universities.

“We agreed that there will be a zero increase of university fees in 2016,” Jacob Zuma said after meeting university officials and student representatives.

“In the long term, there is a package of issues that was raised at the meeting that needs to be followed up – these include free education, institutional autonomy [and] racism.”

During the protests, universities said they needed to increase fees to maintain standards, as they had been hit by a fall in government subsidies.
