Gotthard Base Tunnel: World’s Longest and Deepest Rail Tunnel Opens in Switzerland

Gotthard base tunnel, the world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel, has officially opened in Switzerland, after almost twenty years of construction work.

The 35-mile (57km) twin-bore tunnel will provide a high-speed rail link under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern Europe.

Switzerland says it will revolutionize European freight transport.

Goods currently carried on the route by a million trucks a year will go by train instead.

Gotthard base tunnel has overtaken Japan’s 53.9km Seikan rail tunnel as the longest in the world and pushed the 50.5km Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France into third place.

In a speech to guests in Erstfeld, near the northern entrance to the tunnel, Swiss Federal President Johann Schneider-Ammann said it was a “giant step for Switzerland but equally for our neighbors and the rest of the continent”.

A live relay carried a speech from the southern end of the tunnel, in Bodio, by the Swiss federal transport minister, Doris Leuthard.

Afterwards two trains set off in opposite directions through the tunnel, each carrying hundreds of guests who had won tickets in a draw, and the new route was formally open.

A lavish show then got under way for the assembled guests in Erstfeld, with dancers, acrobats, singers and musicians celebrating Alpine culture and history.

The sacrifices of the tunnel miners, nine of whom died during the work, were also commemorated in the spectacle.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, Italy’s PM Matteo Renzi, Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern and other European leaders are to attend the day’s events, along with European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker.

Europe’s goods had to cross the Alps and now they will able to do so more quickly, more safely, and more cheaply.

The project, which cost more than $12 billion to build, was endorsed by Swiss voters in a referendum in 1992. Voters then backed a proposal from environmental groups to move all freight travelling through Switzerland from road to rail two years later.

The completed tunnel travels up to 2.3 km below the surface of the mountains above and through rock that reaches temperatures of 46C.

Engineers had to dig and blast through 73 different kinds of rock, some as hard as granite and others as soft as sugar. More than 28 million tons of rock was excavated.

Now the completed tunnel – delivered on time and within budget – will create a mainline rail connection between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Genoa in Italy.

When full services begin in December, the journey time for travelers between Zurich and Milan will be reduced by an hour to two hours and 40 minutes.

The tunnel’s trajectory will be flat and straight instead of winding up through the mountains like the old rail tunnel and a road tunnel opened in 1980.

About 260 freight trains and 65 passenger trains will pass through the tunnel each day in a journey taking as little as 17 minutes.

The tunnel is being financed by value-added and fuel taxes, road charges on heavy vehicles and state loans that are due to be repaid within a decade.

Swiss bank Credit Suisse has said its economic benefits will include the easier movement of goods and increased tourism.

Donald Trump Praised by North Korean Media

Donald Trump has been described by North Korean media as a “wise politician” who could be good for the Asian country.

According to an editorial in DPRK Today, the Republican billionaire was a “far-sighted presidential candidate”.

Donald Trump recently said he would be willing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and has also proposed withdrawing US troops from South Korea.

Analysts said the editorial was not official policy but likely reflected Pyongyang’s thinking.

The writer, Han Yong-mook – described as a Chinese North Korean scholar – said Donald Trump’s policy on US troops would make the North’s “Yankee Go Home” vision come true.Donald Trump praised in North Korea

North Korea has long wanted US troops to leave the Korean peninsula.

“The day when the slogan becomes real would be the day of Korean Unification,” said the editorial, first reported by website NK News.

It suggested Donald Trump’s statement that he did not want to get involved in any conflict between North and South Korea was “fortunate from North Koreans’ perspective”.

Han Yong-mook also said US voters should reject Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, calling her “dull”.

“The president that US citizens must vote for is not that dull Hillary, but Trump, who spoke of holding direct conversation with North Korea,” he said.

North Korea had earlier this month dismissed Donald Trump’s proposal to discuss Pyongyang’s nuclear program with Kim Jong-un as “just a gesture”.

“I think his [Donald Trump’s] idea of talk is nonsense,” So Se-pyong, North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, had told Reuters.

VW Emissions Scandal Hits German Giant’s Profit in Q1 2016

0

Volkswagen profit fell 20% in Q1 of 2016 as the auto maker continues to grapple with fallout from the diesel emissions scandal.

Pre-tax profit fell to €3.2 billion in Q1 of 2016, down from €3.97 billion in the same period a year ago.

VW CEO Matthias Muller said he was “satisfied” with the start of “what will undoubtedly be a demanding” 2016.

The German giant admitted last year that it installed software to cheat US emissions tests.

VW has already set aside more than €16 billion to pay for costs arising from the scandal.

The company has agreed a deal with the DoJ in which it will buy back and “substantially” compensate more than 500,000 American owners of its diesel cars affected by the emissions cheating. Final details are expected in June.VW CO2 issue 2015

“In the first quarter, we once again managed to limit the economic effects of the diesel issue and achieve respectable results under difficult conditions,” Matthias Muller added.

VW Group sales revenue fell 3.4% to €51 billion in the period.

Sales of VW-branded cars were particularly hard hit, with profit from that part of the business falling 83% to €73 million from €514in 2015.

VW maintained its forecast of a 5% fall in 2016 sales revenue compared with last year, “depending on economic conditions – particularly in South America and Russia – and exchange rate developments as well as against the backdrop of the diesel issue”.

However, the company predicted “a marked decrease in sales revenue” in 2016 for its passenger car brands, which include Audi, Seat and Skoda.

Matthias Muller said: “2016 will be a transitional year for Volkswagen… we remain confident that our operating business will again record solid growth this year.”

After publishing the profit report, VW shares fell 3% in Frankfurt to €133.57 and are down 40% over the past 12 months.

7 Kinds Of Financial Crime That Occur In The Business World

0

If you work in the world of business, you need to know all about the most common kinds of financial crimes. When you know about them, you can ensure that you never become either a victim or a perpetrator. Here are seven of the most common financial crimes in the business world.

  1. Mortgage Fraud

Mortgage fraud is something that happens in the real estate industry from time to time. And it can have a devastating impact on people’s lives. A company that does this can extract money from the transaction to increase profits. It’s illegal and can lead to real estate companies getting shut down. This can affect ordinary homebuyers, but it can also affect companies that rent commercial properties.

  1. Forgery

Forgery is when a company is involved in faking documents. It could be as simple as faking signatures to make it appear that they have authorisation for something when they don’t. The reasons for doing this are varied. But it usually links back to money and companies wanting to get their hands on more of it. It can be used to facilitate other kinds of fraud too.

  1. Tax Evasion

When a company does not pay the amount of money in taxes that it’s obliged to, it’s a crime. It’s a serious crime, and many companies have been exposed as tax evaders in recent times. It is very difficult to distinguish between aggressive avoidance and evasion though. For example, there are some very dodgy schemes that are frowned upon but are technically legal.

  1. Money Laundering

Money laundering happens when illegal money is channelled into legitimate companies. This is done so that the money can enter circulation naturally and appear legal and legitimate. This money has often been used for illegal activities such as selling drugs. On other occasions, it’s simply used as a way to avoid paying tax on some money.

  1. Fraud

Fraud can encompass many different kinds of activity. At its core, fraud refers to a company or individual trying to extract money from elsewhere through illegal means. Fraudulent activity is commonly conducted via things like insurance policies. Sometimes, people take advantage of policies illegally to trigger a payout from the insurance company. But that’s just one example of fraud.

  1. Bribery

Bribery is one of the most common and widespread forms of financial crime in the business world. Bribes are used to get an unfair advantage over the competition, and it’s a key sign of corruption. It occasionally happens that honest payments are mistaken as bribes though. The best criminal defense attorney you can find if you think you’ve been wrongly accused. There is a fine line between the two and a grey area.

  1. Racketeering

Racketeering is when organised groups operate an illegal business. These businesses can take many different forms. Some of them are used to simply embezzle funds. And others focus on other particular illegal activities, such as drug and trafficking offence. These organisations obviously have to be kept covert, so they can be difficult for the authorities to uncover them and take action.

Does air pollution nullify the health benefits of cycling and walking?

0

There is no magic medicine solution that can make us healthier on the long run like good old exercising can. Even just a few days at the gym per week can make your body stronger and much healthier, thus reducing the exposure to various diseases.

benefits of cycling and walking

Regular exercising can greatly reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and several types of cancers. Many people have tried to increase the quality of their lifestyle through “active travel” which includes cycling or walking. However, due to the high levels of pollutants in the air, is this alternative commuting really that healthy? Many people are actually more concerned for their health while walking or cycling to work in our urban environments.

Over the past few decades, air pollution has become one of the major environmental risks for our health. According to World Health Organization, there were 3.7 million premature deaths in 2012 all around the world, due to ambient air pollution. Additionally, recently in Australia it has been reported that 1.5% of all deaths are related to long-term exposure to air pollution in urban areas and 0.8% to short-term ones.

health benefits of cycling and walking

According to several studies from earlier this year, air pollutants kill over 5 million people every year. While walking or cycling to work, more air is inhaled than when you are just sitting in your car or train. All the huffing and puffing on your bicycle makes you breathe in much more air, thus inhaling toxic pollutants which later lead to some severe respiratory problems.

Additionally, researchers have calculated the “breaking point” which represents the point when the cycling is no more beneficial for the health, but it does more harm. However, that point occurs only after cycling for more than 60 minutes per day.

Since people try to increase the quality of their lives by cycling and walking to work or school, they have tried several protection measures from the pollution. Mostly, people wear masks to protect their respiratory systems and try to inhale as least polluted air as possible. This helps them reduce the muck on their faces and noses. Another possible solution is opting for faster bicycles. The less time you spend behind a car or the least you huff and puff, the inhaled pollutants will reduce. That is why many people consider it convenient to find electric bikes in Sydney shops. Since these are electric and do not require a lot of pedaling, you automatically inhale less polluted air.

health benefits of cycling and walking

However, even though long-term exposure to the air pollution can be harmful, according to the latest studies, everyday cycling and exercises outweighs the negative effects on health of those pollutants. The study was done by scientists in Spain, Brazil and Switzerland and the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh and Imperial College London in the UK. They have showed that even in the most polluted cities of the world, such as Delhi and London, regular cycling and physical activity can outweigh polluted air effects.

Scientists used computer simulation in order to assess the risks and benefits for different intensities and duration of active travelling exposed to different air pollution levels in locations around the world. What the results have shown is that the benefits outweigh the risks. Such results should encourage people to get out of their cars and not to be afraid of cycling and walking to work. What is more, fewer cars on the street can only result in less pollution.

health benefits of cycling and walking

With this study, the policy makers should consider changing the way of planning their infrastructures, and more politicians and public figures should now promote cycling and regular physical activity in order to show people how to live healthier.

Alan Pulido Rescued Hours After His Kidnapping

Mexican soccer star Alan Pulido is now “safe and sound” after police rescued him from kidnappers who seized him in north-eastern Mexico.

Alan Pulido was abducted at gunpoint on Saturday night in his home town of Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas state.

The  25-year-old striker, who plays for Greek team Olympiakos, phoned police while his captors were distracted, officials say.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested. Officials say he confessed to belonging to a local criminal gang.

Police are searching for another three men believed to have been involved in the kidnapping.Alan Pulido kidnapped in Mexico

Alan Pulido’s car was surrounded by several vehicles as he was leaving a party with his girlfriend on Saturday night.

Masked men took him away, leaving his girlfriend unharmed in the car park where the incident took place.

Alan Pulido’s family received a phone call on Sunday demanding a ransom payment, state prosecutor Ismael Quintanilla told journalists.

It is not clear whether the family was planning to meet the kidnappers’ demands or how big the ransom demand was.

Ismael Quintanilla said that the security forces were able to locate Alan Pulido thanks to the phone call he managed to make to police.

He said no shots had been fired and the Olympiakos striker only sustained a minor injury.

One of his hands bandaged, Alan Pulido told reporters on May 30: “[I am] very well, thank God.”

Tamaulipas is one of Mexico’s most violent states, and Mexico recently deployed more security forces to tackle cartels operating in the area.

Mexico has one of the world’s highest kidnapping rates, with government figures saying some 1,000 people are abducted every year.

Others argue that the true figure could be almost 10 times as high.

Alan Pulido joined Olympiakos in July 2015 and finished the season with six goals in 15 games.

Donald Trump DC Biker Rally: Illegal Immigrants Often Get Betther than US Vets

Donald Trump told a bikers’ rally in Washington DC that illegal immigrants in the US often get better care than the nation’s military veterans.

“We’re not going to allow that to happen any longer,” he said.

The Republican presidential nominee did not provide any evidence for his assertion.

In 2015, Donald Trump sparked anger by attacking the military record of Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war.

Donald Trump said John McCain was only considered a hero because he was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.

He then added: “I like people who weren’t captured.”

Since then Donald Trump, who never served in the military, has tried to repair the damage by frequently honoring veterans at his rallies and holding fundraising events for them.

The billionaire’s latest comments came at the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally on Sunday, which was dedicated to remembering POWs and those missing in action.

Despite previous criticism, many in the crowd cheered Donald Trump.

He was speaking ahead of the June 7 California primary.

Donald Trump is running unopposed in California after his Republican rivals pulled out and he reached the number of delegates needed to secure the nomination. It has yet to be formalized.

Venezuela Crisis: Lufthansa Suspends Caracas Flights from June 18

Lufthansa has announced that it will suspend flights to Venezuela from June 18 due to economic difficulties in the country.

The German airline also said currency controls in Venezuela made it impossible for airlines to convert their earnings into dollars and send the money abroad.

Venezuela’s economy has been hit hard by a sharp drop in the price of oil – the country’s main source of income.

The country has high inflation and severe shortages of basic goods.

In a statement, Lufthansa said that it “will be forced to suspend our service between Caracas and Frankfurt as of June 18”.Lufthansa suspends Venezuela flights

The company noted that the demand for international flights to Venezuela had dropped in 2015 and in the first quarter of the current year.

However, it said it hoped to restore services in the near future.

Strict currency controls were first imposed in Venezuela in 2003 by late President Hugo Chavez.

The restrictions were further tightened two years ago, forcing several airlines to reduce their operations in the country as they struggled to repatriate billions of dollars in revenue held in the local currency – the bolivar.

Some airlines are now requiring passengers to pay their fares in dollars.

Venezuela’s government has defended its policies, saying it must prioritize.

Caracas says it is using its foreign reserves – which are now scarce – to pay for essential items such as medicines and industrial machinery.

Vladimir Putin Visits Holy Mount Athos for Second Time

Vladimir Putin has visited Mount Athos, one of Orthodox Christianity’s holiest sites.

The Russian president joined celebrations at the monastery of St Panteleimon to mark 1,000 years of Russian monks at Mount Athos, in northern Greece.

Vladimir Putin was accompanied by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill.

Mount Athos is an all-male Orthodox enclave of 20 monasteries. Women have been banned for over 1,000 years.Vladimir Putin visits Mount Athos

Greece and Russia are both largely Orthodox Christian countries and have close religious ties.

Vladimir Putin traveled to the peninsula by boat, as there is no road access, and held talks with Greece’s President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

As he was welcomed at the enclave’s administrative centre, Karyes, Vladimir Putin said he was convinced that the Russian connection to Greece as well as to the holy Mount Athos “could only get stronger”.

After attending a service in Karyes, Vladimir Putin traveled on to the monastery of St Panteleimon, unaccompanied by the media.

It was Vladimir Putin’s second visit to the monastery; he traveled there in 2005 as the first Russian leader to visit the site.

Despite his background as a KGB officer in Communist times, when the Soviet state frowned on religion, Vladimir Putin has embraced his Orthodox faith and is believed to have a good relationship with Patriarch Kirill.

Donald Trump’s Opponents Clash with Supporters at San Diego Rally

Donald Trump’s supporters have clashed with his and at a rally in San Diego, California.

Police declared a gathering outside San Diego’s convention centre unlawful and made 35 arrests, as stones and water bottles were thrown.

Donald Trump was in San Diego, near the Mexican border, to hold a rally ahead of the June 7 California primary.

The Republican has pledged to build a border wall to keep out illegal immigrants.

The skirmishes flared as the convention centre emptied following Donald Trump’s rally, and supporters and opponents met in the streets, jeering and heckling each other.Donald Trump San Diego rally

Dozens of riot police officers had been deployed to separate them.

Some protesters scaled a wall of the centre to throw water bottles at police.

After ordering the crowds to disperse, riot police then moved them away from the city’s Gaslamp Quarter.

San Diego’s population is about one-third Latino and hundreds of thousands of people cross the border with Mexico legally each day.

The San Diego Police Department said that 35 arrests had been made and there was no damage to property and no injuries reported.

Donald Trump tweeted to the police after the event: “Fantastic job on handling the thugs who tried to disrupt our very peaceful and well attended rally.”

The New York billionaire is running unopposed in California after his Republican rivals pulled out and he reached the number of delegates needed to secure the nomination. It has yet to be formalized.

On May 27, Donald Trump backed out of an offer to debate with Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, saying in a statement: “As much as I want to debate Bernie Sanders – and it would be an easy payday – I will wait to debate the first place finisher in the Democratic Party, probably Crooked Hillary Clinton, or whoever it may be.”

Bernie Sanders told reporters on the campaign trail that he hoped Donald Trump would change his mind.

“Well Mr. Trump, what are you afraid of?” the Vermont senator said, calling the Republican nominee a “bully”.

Donald Trump said the Democratic nominating process was “rigged” – and that Hillary Clinton and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Deborah Wasserman Schultz would not allow Bernie Sanders to win the nomination.

The latest opinion polls suggest Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by about four percentage points.

Johnny Depp Ordered to Stay Away from Amber Heard

Johnny Depp has been ordered to stay away from his estranged wife, Amber Heard, after the actress alleged he assaulted her.

Amber Heard said in court on May 27 that Johnny Depp threw her mobile phone at her during a fight on May 21.

The judge also said Johnny Depp should not try to contact Amber Heard.

On May 23, Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, 52, after 15 months of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.

Amber Heard brought a photograph of herself with a bruised cheek and eye to the Los Angeles Superior Court.

What Could Affect Your Chance Of Winning A PI Claim?

0

doctor

Flickr Picture

Every year, hundreds of thousands of PI claims are filed in the USA alone. These are typically from employees hoping to be compensated with money due to an injury they experienced on the job. But a personal injury claim could come from anyone at any time. You might slip on ice in the winter. If you’re on property owned by a private owner or public authority, you could sue. It was their responsibility to grit the area and ensure that it was not a safety hazard. However, there’s no guarantee if you do this, that you’ll win the claim. In fact, there are a few different factors that could affect your chances of winning.

Admitting Fault

If you are injured at work, one of the first things that will happen is your employer will try to get you to admit fault. They won’t do this in a way that is apparent. It will be quite subtle. Usually, they will ask what you were doing; then they will twist it to make you seem accountable. They can use any statement you make in their defense. That’s why if you do plan on making on PI claim, it’s best to keep your mouth shut. At least, until you speak to a lawyer.

Social Media

It’s not just in the office that you need to stay silent either. If you are filing a PI claim, it’s best to be careful about what you say on social media. A claimant for PI usually has to show two things. They need to show that their daily life has been negatively impacted by the injury. They might also have to show a certain level of emotional distress. However, if the claimant is posting happy posts on social media, this can be put forward as evidence they have not been negatively impacted. As well as this, it’s possible that social media posts about daily activity could be used to show the injury has not been detrimental. At the very least that could alter how much money you receive.

The Right Lawyer

Of course, choosing your lawyer is a crucial part of winning a PI claim. Depending on the lawyer you might boost or limit the chances of you winning. But don’t forget a personal injury attorney can only win with all the facts. It’s up to you to provide them. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you shouldn’t be honest with your lawyer. You should. They don’t have to disclose everything that you tell them during the proceeding.

Integrity

Have you made a PI claim before? It’s unlikely that you’ll be compensated for a second claim. Courts don’t tend to buy that people get struck by lightning twice. In fact, if you’ve been affected by a PI twice, they’re more inclined to believe it’s your fault. That’s not to say a second claim is impossible to win. It’s just not very likely. The character is important when filing a PI claim. If there’s any evidence you can not be trusted, you won’t win.

Financial Tips For Starting A Business

0

To start a business we must have to establish the financial security during the running time and future time if need
extra financing in our business firm as financial condition always fluctuate in every organization so keeping a strong backup of a financial help for an organization always help to run business accurately .

So, when we try to start a business firm we must follow some important things and abide some vital rules which help a firm to sustain in a competitive market situation. To survey market for the produced product is the key factor for
starting the business as real result comes out by serving the market and show the benefit possibility and loss
possibility as well. There are three major survey systems, first to analyze previous data second, analyze present
consumer demand, third to think future demand. On the basis of consumer demand we should take step to manage
business area so that excessive costing would not occur and expected consumer can get and retain customer for a
long time.

Demand of employee:

For starting a business we should know about the demand of employee as employee demand varies from country to
country so where employee demand is high there expense rate is high so it is better to open or start business in the
area of low salary demanding area so that business firm can grow easily and make an expected level profit.

Measure tax rate

By measuring tax rates we can calculate our expense amount which help a firm to take decision to start a business as all government give different condition for different business firm at different place from this sense we get better
facility by establishing a business firm in ‘BISIC ‘area with all modern transport facility, electricity facility, and
various types of facility.  It is true that sometimes government declare a tax free zone for establishing several
business firms in a selected area and it is wise step to choose the tax free area to minimize the cost that will help an
entrepreneur to run a business firm ignoring government tax.

Transport cost

Transport cost is types of cost which always directly effect on production cost and for this it must measure from the
beginning of the business firm, an easy transport facility helps to grow business rapidly and a secure transport
facility ensures a firm to deliver the product safely and swiftly. We can see a dynamic transport facility and low cost
transport system helps a business firm in many ways which best examples are China different transport system so,
it’s a vital element to consider for starting a business.

Banks loan giving tendency:

In every country have several banks to provide loan for the business growth but it is matter to calculate the bank’s
loan giving rate according to time scheduling and if the situation remain in our favor than we should take the
opportunity for the business purpose if need . On the other hand it also necessary to calculate the deposit rate and
foreign exchange rate of the required banks. Every commercial bank has some extra facility for providing loan to the business firm given by the government rather to pressure debt rates. If business firm grow rapidly than that firm
create some employment opportunity that help to reduce country’s poverty.

  Primary Capital capacity:

Measurement of primary running capital capacity helps a business firm to operate its business at the primary level in the running market as a new growing business firm so we should measure the primary investment money and must target the area that which sectors we invest first and how much we should invest, sometimes an effective investment can easily make profit in a new growing firm so it impact directly on the business firm. You can take help from
personal finance in sacramento for your initial capital as well.

Barack Obama Becomes First Serving US President to Visit Hiroshima

President Barack Obama is set to arrive in Hiroshima and become the first serving US president to visit Japan’s city since the 1945 nuclear bombing.

Barack Obama flew into a US base nearby, after leaving the G7 summit.

He has said he will not be issuing an apology for the nuclear attack, but will honor all those who died in World War Two.

Barack Obama told Japanese media the visit would show that “even former adversaries can become the strongest of allies”.

The president wrote in the Asahi newspaper: “Hiroshima reminds us that war, no matter the cause or countries involved, results in tremendous suffering and loss, especially for innocent civilians.”Barack Obama North Korea sanctions

The world’s first nuclear bomb attack, on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, killed at least 140,000 people. Two days later a second nuclear bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing another 74,000.

Barack Obama will lay a wreath at the cenotaph, where an eternal flame remembers Hiroshima’s dead. He will be joined by bomb survivors living in the now thriving city.

Many in the US believe the use of the nuclear bomb, though devastating, was right, because it forced Japan to surrender, bringing an end to World War Two.

Jimmy Carter has visited Hiroshima, but after the end of his presidency.

A US ambassador attended the annual commemoration for the first time in 2010.

Donald Trump Wins Enough Delegates for Republican Presidential Nomination

Donald Trump has reached the number of delegates needed to secure Republican presidential nomination.

On May 26, in North Dakota, Donald Trump thanked 15 unbound delegates from the state who he said “got us right over the top”.

Donald Trump defeated 16 other Republican contenders and according to the Associated Press has 1,238 delegates, one more than needed.

Republicans will finalize their nomination at a convention in July.

While Donald Trump has the required amount of delegates, his nomination by a divided GOP is not yet secured.

Unbound delegates in the party are free to support the candidate of their choice.

If his nomination is confirmed, Donald Trump will face former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who are vying for the Democrat nomination.

On May 25, Donald Trump suggested going against Bernie Sanders in a TV debate in California before the state’s primary on June 7.

Bernie Sanders agreed to the debate in a tweet, saying: “Game on.”

On May 26, Donald Trump said: “The problem with debating Bernie? He’s going to lose.”

The New York billionaire also threw a barb in Hillary Clinton’s direction, saying: “Here I am watching Hillary fight and she can’t close the deal. That should be such an easy deal to close.”

Earlier, President Barack Obama said that world leaders “had good reason to be rattled” by Donald Trump, whose proposals he said were “either ignorance of world affairs or a cavalier attitude”.

In response to that, Donald Trump told reporters in North Dakota that rattling leaders of other countries was a “good thing”.

“[President Barack Obama] knows nothing about business,” Donald Trump said.

“Many of the countries in our beautiful world have been absolutely abusing us and taking advantage of us.

“We’re going to have great relationships with these countries but if they’re rattled in a friendly way that’s a good thing, not a bad thing.”

What Types of Danger Are Found in the Workplace?

0

The workplace is the last place any of us want to be injured. Of course, no-one really wants to get injured anywhere at any time. But the fact that you were just trying to do your job at the time definitely adds a bit of a sting to the deal!

In an ideal world, no worker would ever be in danger when they’re at work. But the sad reality is that many workers all over the world are at some risk of injury, even if a relatively small one. In fact, there are very few jobs that don’t come with some kind of risk to your body!

Here is a rundown of the most common workplace hazards. Whenever you’re on the job, keep these things in mind!

Wikipedia

Falls and falling objects

These are probably the most common injuries in any workplace. Of course, when you say “falls”, a lot of people will automatically think of construction work. But dangerous falls can occur in pretty much any workplace. A spilled liquid on the wrong surface that isn’t correctly cleaned up can result in a slip, for example. An officer worker may also have to deal with the dangers of boxes that have been incorrectly stacked.

Of course, it is definitely more of a concern in construction that anywhere else. This is why such sites are now regulated by OSHA. It’s also why innovative new technologies are being developed to keep workers safe and stay compliant with OSHA. Things like the smart hard hat help protect your head and monitor your vital signs!

Automobile accidents

For anyone whose work involves driving or working around vehicles, this is a clear risk. Car accidents are one of the most common causes of injury in America. Taxi drivers and delivery people are at frequent risk of such injuries. But even people who only have to drive a vehicle occasionally are taking a risk – again, this includes construction workers!”

Truck drivers, who often have to drive for more than twelve hours a day, are at particular risk. Highway travel at high speeds doesn’t usually scream “safety”, as I’m sure you know! Such dangers are why truck accident attorneys exist. If you need legal help regarding such an accident, call Sean Park Law’s office.

Repetitive strain injury

Does your job mostly involve you sitting at your desk and typing all day? You may think you’re completely safe from work-related injuries. Unfortunately, the nature of your job actually puts you at risk of RSI – repetitive strain injury.

This is a sort of umbrella term for any injury you can suffer when repeating those motions in your hands and arms for so long. Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the more famous examples. RSI shouldn’t be underestimated. They can have long-term effects on your ability to work. It’s why ergonomics – also known as the combination of comfort and work – is important to investigate in your office.

There are, of course, a number of others risks that come with any job. Remember that it is always your employer responsibility to keep you safe.

Greece Bailout: Eurogroup Agrees to Unlock 10.3 Billion in New Loans

In a major breakthrough deal, eurozone finance ministers have agreed to extend further bailout loans to Greece as well as debt relief.

After Brussels talks, the ministers agreed to unlock 10.3 billion euros ($11.5 billion) in new loans.

The move came two days after the Greek parliament approved another round of spending cuts and tax increases demanded by international creditors.

The 19 eurozone ministers – known as the Eurogroup also said debt relief would be eventually offered to Greece.

This had been a key demand from the IMF, which says public debt is unsustainable at current levels of about 180% of Greece’s gross domestic product.Greece bailout Wikileaks

The deal was announced after 11 hours of talks between the Eurogroup ministers.

Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem told reporters on May 25: “We achieved a major breakthrough on Greece which enables us to enter a new phase in the Greek financial assistance program.”

Jeroen Dijsselbloem said a package of debt measures would be “phased in progressively”, adding that he was “glad to confirm” the IMF would now stay on board.

Poul M. Thomsen, director of the IMF’s European Department, welcomed the recognition that Greek debt was unsustainable and relief was needed.

He warned, however, that the IMF board in Washington still had to agree to the fund’s participation. He also said that the extent of debt relief was still not clear.

The IMF and the Eurogroup have been at odds for months over the issue of reducing Greece’s debt.

Greece’s parliament passed new budget cuts and tax rises at the weekend, in order to unblock much-needed aid to help meet the country’s debt repayments over the coming months.

The bill also created a state privatization fund requested by eurozone finance ministers.

Opponents of the measures demonstrated outside parliament on May 22.

The Greek government, led by the leftist Syriza coalition, agreed to a third bailout worth €86 billion ($96 billion) in 2015.

Donald Trump New Mexico Rally Hit by Violent Protests

A Donald Trump rally in New Mexico has been hit by violent protests with demonstrators throwing burning T-shirts and bottles and clashing with police.

Riot police fired smoke grenades into the crowd. Protesters also interrupted Donald Trump’s speech at the rally in Albuquerque.

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, wants a wall to be built along the border with Mexico.

New Mexico is the most Hispanic state in the US.

The protesters had gathered outside the Albuquerque Convention Center, with banners that read “Trump is Fascist” and “We’ve heard enough”.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, as the rally got under way, the crowd grew angry – throwing stones at police and trying to set fire to Trump T-shirts they had stolen from a seller.

In a series of tweets, Albuquerque police said bottles and rocks had been thrown at officers and police horses, and damage to a Convention Center window may have been caused by a pellet gun.

Speaking to a crowd of 4,000 people, Donald Trump was typically robust in his response to the protesters.

“How old is this kid?” he asked of one that disrupted the rally, adding: “Still wearing diapers.”

To others, the Republican candidate said: “Go home to mommy.”

Albuquerque is the first stop of Donald Trump’s tour of New Mexico.

Republican Governor Susana Martinez has been critical of Donald Trump’s attacks on immigrants and has not yet said if she will support his candidacy for the presidential election.

Susana Martinez and other senior members of the local Republican party stayed away from Tuesday’s rally.

Facebook Announces Changes in Trending Topics Feed

Facebook is changing to the way it runs its Trending Topics feed, following an internal investigation.

The social network has announced more training for staff and that the feed will no longer rely on a list of news organizations, including the Washington Post, the BBC and Buzzfeed News, to validate subjects.

The feed, which lists popular headlines along with a brief description, has been accused of political bias.

However, Facebook’s report found no evidence of this.

The investigation analyzed 3,000 reviewer decisions following allegations that conservative issues were being suppressed, Facebook general counsel Colin Stretch said.Fcebook Trending Topics

Facebook was accused by anonymous former employees of tampering with its Trending Topics feature, promoting “progressive” views and websites over content presenting views from the American right.

Current and former staff were also interviewed by the company.

The findings were revealed in a 12-page letter, addressed to Senator John Thune but also published online, in response to Senator Thune’s questions about the workings of Trending.

The Trending Topics feed currently works as a mixture of AI and human input, with potential subjects being suggested via algorithm and then reviewed by staff.

They are a mixture of popular subjects discussed on the social network and sourced from 1,000 media organizations. There was also a list of 10 organizations used to determine importance.

However, “as much as half” of the topics suggested algorithmically are rejected “because they do not make sense at the time or are duplicative”, Colin Stretch said.

So-called “stale topics” – events still popular in discussions after two days but with no new developments – and “junk hashtags” – popular topics not related to actual events – are also sidelined, he added.

Colin Stretch added that topics with sources in foreign languages may also not be included on the grounds that the team may be unable to identify them.

The report did find that historically some topics that were discussed over a long period of time did not show up algorithmically.

For example, hashtags relating to the Black Lives Matter campaign failed to appear in December 2014 and were not manually inserted by the Trending Topics review team either.

However, the topic “Ferguson”, which related to the police shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri, was added to compensate for this, wrote Colin Stretch.

North Korean Restaurant Workers Defect to Southeast Asia

0

Three North Korean workers at a state-run restaurant overseas have defected, South Korea has confirmed.

According to South Korea’s Unification Ministry, the North Koreans had “broken away”, but refused to comment further. It said they would now come to South Korea.

The defectors had been in China but were currently in a third country in South East Asia, says Yonhap News Agency, citing an unidentified source.North Korea restaurant workers defection

This would be the second restaurant defection this year.

Last month, a group of 13 North Koreans workers defected to South Korea from a restaurant in Ningbo, China.

Pyongyang has accused Seoul of abducting them, but South Korea strongly denies this.

North Korea runs some 130 restaurants in other countries, a vital source of income.

Workers at the North Korean restaurants are usually chosen for their loyalty to the communist country’s leadership.

Why National Security Is At The Top Of The Political Agenda, And Will Remain So

0

It’s been a taxing time for global geopolitics. Eastern countries sense that the West is in crisis, with its rising debts and aging populations. And the West, like a cornered bear protecting it’s young, is growling and showing its teeth.

But underneath this structural change in the balance of power, lies a few more unsettling trends. One is the fact that the Middle East hasn’t become a new American Midwest with palm trees. In fact, by many accounts, it’s now far more unstable than it was before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Back then, Western countries were riding high on the success of their intervention in Kosovo. The removal of dictators on the edge of Europe was a massive and resounding success. Allied powers, emboldened, turned their attention to the Middle East, expecting a similar result. All they needed to do was depose the dictators, install a democratic government. Iraq and the others would become as peaceful and as benign as Serbia and Montenegro are in today’s Europe.

Well, we all know how that turned out. The Middle East has become a very unstable place. In fact, thanks to the action of NATO countries, the risks to national security appear to be higher than ever before. Countries in the Middle East have become a hotbed for terrorism. It’s clear now that there aren’t any so-called “good guys” in these regions. The people the West supports tend to end up being more radical and more violent than the people the West deposes.

This is where Donald Trump comes in. He’s said on many occasions that he actually favors the despots in the Middle East. At least, he says, they were “good at killing terrorists.”

And this brings us to our second, unsettling trend – the proliferation of terrorism itself. The Washington Forum, organized by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, will meet later this year. They will ask the question of whether or not Jihadism can be defeated.

It’s an important question to ask. This isn’t your average pitched battle between nation states where a victory is well-defined. This is a battle with a set of ideas – ideas that can be communicated instantly over Twitter and other, less well known messenger services. Controlling terrorism, therefore, is like trying to stop the flow of a river. You might block one channel, but it will just reroute itself, and find a new direction in which to flow.

Right now, terrorism is a significant threat. But the problem is it’s potential to grow as a threat. The terrorist of today have access to makeshift bombs, able to kills hundreds, maybe thousands of people. The terrorists of tomorrow will have access to biological weapons, able to kill far more.

It’s this sobering reality that is forcing the subject of national security to the top of the agenda. And it’s this trend that will drive its importance well into the future. So long as Jihadism remains an idea, the West will have to be vigilant.

Venezuela Sugar Shortage Hits Coca-Cola Production

Coca-Cola has been forced to stop producing soft drinks in Venezuela amid an escalating food and energy shortage.

The company said that sugar suppliers in Venezuela will “temporarily cease operations due to a lack of raw materials”.

The announcement comes after Venezuela’s biggest brewer, Empresas Polar, closed plants due to a barley shortage.

Venezuela’s economy has contracted sharply as oil prices plunge.

A Coca-Cola spokeswoman said the company would continue producing sugarless drinks such as Coca-Cola Light (Diet Coke).

She said: “We are engaging with suppliers, government authorities and our associates to take the necessary actions for a prompt solution.”Coca Cola Venezuela sugar shortage

Sugarcane production has been falling due to price controls and rising production costs, as well as problems in obtaining fertilizer.

As a result, many smaller farmers have turned to other crops that are not price controlled and thus generate higher income.

Venezuela is expected to produce 430,000 tonnes of sugarcane in 2016/17, down from 450,000 tonnes for the previous 12 months, and import 850,000 tonnes of raw and refined sugar, according to USDA figures.

The country’s economic problems have forced many consumers to queue for hours to buy basic foodstuffs.

Venezuela’s economy is expected to shrink by 8% in 2016 after it contracted by 5.8% in 2015.

Its reliance on oil to generate foreign currency and investment has made it a victim of regular recessions.

President Nicolas Maduro has declared a state of emergency in an effort to combat the economic crisis. Critics argue it is an attempt to strengthen his grip on power.

Meanwhile, Bridgestone said on May 23 it was selling its Venezuelan business after six decades in the country.

Bridgestone’s Venezuelan assets will be sold to Grupo Corimon.

Other multinational companies such as Procter & Gamble, Ford and Halliburton have either slowed or abandoned their investments in Venezuela.

MS804: EgyptAir Plane Did Not Swerve and Change Direction before Disappearing

According to a senior Egyptian aviation official, EgyptAir MS804 that crashed in the Mediterranean did not swerve and change direction before disappearing.

The Airbus A320 was en route from Paris to Cairo with 66 people aboard when it vanished from radar early on May 19.

According to Greece’s defense minister, the plane turned 90 degrees left and then did a 360-degree turn towards the right before plummeting.

Ehab Azmy, the head of Egypt’s state-run provider of air navigation services, said there was no unusual movement.

He told Associated Press the plane had been flying at its normal height of 37,000ft before dropping off the radar. Some debris has since been found.

“That fact degrades what the Greeks are saying about the aircraft suddenly losing altitude before it vanished from radar,” he said.EgyptAir MS804 debris

Greece’s defense minister Panos Kammenos had said the radar showed the Airbus A320 making two sharp turns and dropping more than 25,000ft before plunging into the sea.

Ehab Azmy added that there were no problems with the plane as it entered Egyptian airspace, where it was tracked for “nearly a minute or two before it disappeared”.

Greek aviation officials had said air traffic controllers spoke to the pilot when he entered Greek airspace and everything appeared normal.

They tried to contact him again at 02:27 Cairo time, as the plane was set to enter Egyptian airspace, but “despite repeated calls, the aircraft did not respond”.

In a statement to Egypt’s al-Ahram newspaper, Ehab Azmy also denied a report there had been contact between the pilot of the plane and Egyptian air traffic control.

Ehab Azmy did not elaborate on his denial to al-Ahram in further interviews with AP and Reuters.

On May 22, Egypt deployed a robot submarine to search for the flight data recorders of the missing EgyptAir plane.

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said there was “no particular theory we can affirm right now” for what caused flight MS804 to crash.

Egypt’s civil aviation minister has said the possibility of a terror attack was stronger than technical failure, but President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said establishing the cause could take a long time, adding “all scenarios are possible”.

The Egyptian military released images on May 21 of life vests, personal items and debris showing the EgyptAir logo which were found during the search in the Mediterranean Sea.

The search has also reportedly found body parts and luggage. The main body of the plane and the two “black boxes” which record flight data and cockpit transmissions have not yet been located.
