Do We Really Care About Our Oral Health and How Often We Visit the Dentist?

Many people only see a dentist when experiencing a big health issue like a severe toothache or tooth loss. Are you one of them? If so, remember that regular dental checkups play a critical role in preserving oral health. It lets your dentist identify and treat a problem in the initial stage before it becomes more serious and costly.

If you’re wondering about the real state of oral health and hygiene of the nation, we will provide you with data and statistics related to dental trends.

How Often We Visit the Dentist?

It’s impossible to give a universal answer because this widely varies from country to country and person to person. Generally speaking, those having a healthy mouth need to see a dentist every six months.

However, this doesn’t apply to people at high risk for some dental problems. They are advised to visit the dentist more frequently, preferably every three months. Those people can fall into any of these categories:

  • Pregnant women
  • Smokers
  • Diabetics
  • People with gum diseases
  • People who often suffer from cavities or plaque buildup
  • People with a weak immunity to bacteria

The good news is that more and more people visit the dentist on a regular basis. A growing number of people give high priority to oral health, so it’s a little wonder that nearly 40% of adults visit the dentist twice a year for preventive services and cleanings.

A recent study conducted by the ADA Health Policy Institute has revealed that the vast majority of Americans highly value good oral health. Even 95% regard their oral health as a critical factor of overall wellness, while 93% said that regular dental visits help them keep healthy.

Why We Visit the Dentist?

As already stated, most of us only go to the dentist in an extreme case. The most common dental problem is caries or cavity. In fact, this is why most adults and kids visit the dentist. Additionally, we also see a dentist due to the following oral health issues:

  • Tooth or root decay
  • Bone disease
  • Gum disease and infection (periodontitis or gingivitis)
  • Facial or jaw pain
  • Tooth loss
  • Oral cancer

The factors like genetics and age play a role in the severity and susceptibility of these conditions. Whatever the case may be, the dentist can detect just about any sign of a dental problem that should be closely monitored or addressed as soon as possible.

How Do We Maintain Oral Health Routine?

Even though there are numerous tips for improving dental routine, we don’t care enough about oral health and often avoid receiving dental exams. Unfortunately, many people maintain a very simple dental routine. That said, most adults merely rely on a toothpaste and toothbrush for their oral health routine. It’s estimated that every fourth person incorporates mouthwash into his/her daily routine, whereas less than 20 percent use dental floss. This is definitely not enough.

Despite being a very important aspect of a general health, oral health is often underrated or overlooked. Let’s improve the current state. Be sure to regularly make dentist appointments to get proper dental care in a timely manner. Prevention is better than cure.

Four Natural Treatments for Depression

Treating mental health issues isn’t easy. However, it doesn’t need to be as difficult as you might imagine. There are many alternative therapies that can improve depression. Learn about the four top natural treatments for depression.

  1. Eating serotonin-rich foods

Most of the doctor-prescribed medications for depression have serious side effects. If you’re not willing to deal with those side effects, then you should consider an alternative to pharmaceuticals. Eating serotonin-rich foods is one worthy alternative.

Anti-depressants often work by increasing your serotonin levels. When this occurs, you can combat depression and improve your mood. But anti-depressions aren’t the only things that can increase serotonin. Eating certain foods can have the same effect.

Certain serotonin-rich foods can boost your serotonin levels. This includes foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like wild salmon, herring, mackerel, and other fish. However, fish isn’t the only serotonin-rich food. Foods like free-range turkey and coconut oil have plenty of serotonin.

  1. Equine Therapy

Have you ever felt the rush of horseback riding? Many people enjoy horseback riding, but few realize the mental health benefits that it provides. Equine therapy is horseback riding for your mental health. It’s especially effective with depression.

During equine therapy, you get out in the sun. You also keep your body in motion and stay active. As a result, you combat the symptoms of depression. You also learn how to build trust and deal with your emotions. Horses are very intuitive animals. When you work with a horse, he can help you identify hidden aggression. He can get you more in touch with your feelings, which can help you cope with your depression.

If you’ve never been on a horse, you shouldn’t have any concerns. Horseback riding is both safe and fun. When you wear the right helmet and accessories, the activity is quite safe.

  1. Balance Your Hormones

Often, issues like depression can be affected by hormone levels. By balancing your hormones, you can keep your depression in-check. For a natural treatment of depression, check your hormone levels and then work towards balancing them. Thyroid levels, adrenal levels, and sex hormones can get off-balance and can make you moody.

You can go to a doctor to get your hormone levels tested. When you get the results, you can take the steps towards balancing your hormones. There are usually natural methods of balancing them. Doing so might not completely resolve your depression, but it could help.

  1. Talk to Someone

If you don’t want to treat depression with medication, then you could try talking it out. Sometimes, all it takes is speaking with a therapist to make a difference. They can help you come up with a plan for fighting off depression and improving your mental health.

If you’re intimidated by the idea of speaking to a therapist, then you could try speaking to a friend. Just discussing your emotions can help you cope with depression. Pull aside a friend or family member and have a heartfelt conversation. The effects of talk therapy can be enough to combat symptoms of depression.

Alternative treatments to depression can make all the difference. Rather than getting hooked on pharmaceuticals, try a natural alternative and change your life.

Didi Chuxing: China’s Major Ride-Sharing Company Suspends Service After Driver Killed Female Passenger

China’s major ride-sharing company Didi Chuxing has suspended its carpool service after police said a driver raped and killed a female passenger.

A Didi Chuxing statement said the incident showed there were deficiencies in its processes, and so it would suspend its Hitch system for re-evaluation.

According to authorities, the 20-year-old woman hailed the ride on August 24 in the eastern city of Wenzhou.

A similar incident happened just months ago.

In May the company suspended and changed Didi Hitch, which pairs car owners and passengers, after a 31-year-old flight attendant died after using the service in Zhengzhou.

In the most recent incident, police said the woman got into the taxi at 1.00 PM local time and messaged a friend for help an hour later before losing contact.

Authorities detained 27-year-old driver named Zhong early on August 25, who confessed to raping and murdering his passenger, police said.

According to Didi’s statement, the body has been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.

Didi Chuxing said Zhong had no previous criminal record, but admitted there had been a previous complaint made against him.

A previous passenger allegedly said Zhong had taken them to a remote place and followed them after they left the car.

The company also fired the head and vice president of Hitch.

Didi Chuxing is the world’s largest ride-hail company by number of trips, reportedly completing more than one billion journeys in the past three years.

In 2016, Uber agreed to sell its local business to Didi after failing to make a profit.

Senator John McCain Dies in Arizona Aged 81

The Vietnam War hero turned senator and presidential candidate John McCain has died aged 81.

Senator McCain died on August 25 in Arizona surrounded by his family, a statement from his office said.

John McCain was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor in July 2017 and had been undergoing medical treatment.

His family announced on August 24 that the senator, who left Washington in December, had decided to stop treatment.

The son and grandson of Navy admirals, John McCain was a fighter pilot during the war in Vietnam. When his plane was shot down, he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war.

While in the custody of his captors, John McCain suffered torture that left him with lasting disabilities.

John McCain Diagnosed with Brain Cancer

John McCain’s widow, Cindy, tweeted: “My heart is broken. I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years. He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best.”

His daughter Meghan said the task of her lifetime would now be “to live up to his example, his expectations, and his love.

Following news of John McCain’s death, wellwishers waving flags lined the street as a hearse brought his body from his ranch near Cornville, Arizona, to a funeral home in Phoenix.

The six-term senator for Arizona and 2008 Republican presidential nominee was diagnosed after doctors discovered his tumor during surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye last July.

John McCain’s family said he would lie in state in Phoenix, Arizona, and in Washington DC before a funeral at the Washington National Cathedral and his burial in Annapolis, Maryland.

Former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama are expected to give eulogies.

Prince’s Family Sues His Doctor over Opioid Addiction

Prince’s family is suing the singer’s doctor, alleging he failed to properly treat the star for an opioid addiction.

According to ABC news, a lawsuit filed in Minnesota alleges that failures by Dr. Michael Schulenberg played a “substantial part” in the star’s death.

Prince Rogers Nelson died in 2016 at the age of 57 from an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl, a powerful opioid.

Dr. Michael Schulenberg has denied any wrongdoing.

Earlier this year, prosecutors said no criminal charges would be brought over Prince’s death.

However, the family’s lawsuit, filed in Hennepin County District Court on Friday, alleges that Dr. Schulenberg’s actions had played a part.

Prince Cause of Death: Singer Died of Fentanyl Overdose

According to ABC, the lawsuit read: “He failed to appropriately evaluate, diagnose, treat and counsel Prince for his recognizable opioid addiction, and further failed to take appropriate and reasonable steps to prevent the foreseeably fatal result of that addiction.

“These departures from the standard of acceptable medical practice had a substantial part in bringing about Prince’s death.”

Prince’s family is seeking unspecified damages in excess of $50,000.

Dr. Schulenberg’s lawyer said they intended to defend the case, the Associated Press reported.

Paul Peterson said in a statement: “We understand this situation has been difficult on everyone close to Mr. Nelson and his fans across the globe. Be that as it may, Dr. Schulenberg stands behind the care that Mr. Nelson received. We intend to defend this case.”

As well as Dr. Schulenberg, the lawsuit also names North Memorial Health Care, where the doctor worked, Walgreens stores, which dispenses medication, and UnityPoint Health.

President Trump Calls off Mike Pompeo’s Planned Trip to North Korea

President Donald Trump asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to call off a planned trip to North Korea.

The president tweeted that insufficient progress was being made in dismantling North Korea’s nuclear program.

President Trump also suggested China was not doing enough to put pressure on North Korea – due to trade tensions with the US.

After his summit with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in June, Donald Trump said North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat.

However, since then there have been several reports that it is failing to dismantle nuclear facilities.

The UN’s nuclear agency (IAEA) has also said North Korea is continuing with its nuclear program.

Mike Pompeo was due to head to Pyongyang next week with his newly appointed special envoy for North Korea – Stephen Biegun, a retiring Ford executive.

It would have been the secretary of state’s fourth trip, though he was not expected to meet Kim Jong-un.

Mike Pompeo Makes Second Visit to North Korea Ahead of Trump-Kim Summit

President Trump took a swipe at China in the second of three tweets on the issue.

He tweeted: “…Additionally, because of our much tougher Trading stance with China, I do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were (despite the UN Sanctions which are in place)…”

China and the US are embroiled in a tit-for-tat tariff war after President Trump complained about the size of the US trade deficit with China and what Washington sees as other unfair trade practices.

However, only two days ago President Trump said China had been a “big help on North Korea”.

Mike Pompeo might still make another trip though.

President Trump tweeted: “…Secretary Pompeo looks forward to going to North Korea in the near future, most likely after our Trading relationship with China is resolved. In the meantime I would like to send my warmest regards and respect to Chairman Kim. I look forward to seeing him soon!”

After the optimism of Singapore, the latest development might seem like quite a change.

However, there have been ups and downs in the Trump-North Korea relationship since then.

After a visit by Mike Pompeo in July, North Korea condemned his “gangster-like demands”, only for another trip to be announced, albeit now cancelled.

The summit itself was called off in May – President Trump citing Pyongyang’s “open hostility” – only for it to take place after all.

The US has made clear that it wants to see an end to North Korea’s nuclear activities before it will consider lifting economic sanctions.

The summit was seen as possible turning point after a ratcheting up of tensions.

North Korea had carried out a sixth nuclear bomb test in September and boasted of its ability to launch a missile at the US.

Donald Trump: “Hush Payments Were Not A Campaign Violation”

0

President Donald Trump has said that payments to two women who say he had affairs with them did not break election campaign rules.

His comments come after his ex-lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to violating laws during the 2016 presidential election over his handling of the hush money.

Interviewed by Fox & Friends, President Trump said the payments had come from him personally, not from the campaign.

Donald Trump has in the past denied knowing about one of the payments altogether.

He also accused Michael Cohen of making up stories to receive a lighter sentence.

In an excerpt from the Fox & Friends interview, which will be aired in full on August 23, President Trump responded to questions about the hush payments by insisting that they were “not a campaign violation”.

He said: “They came from me. And I tweeted about it. But they did not come out of the campaign.”

President Trump added that he only found out about the payments “later on”.

The president’s comments contradict a statement made earlier by Michael Cohen under oath in which he said Donald Trump had instructed him to make the payments.

President Trump Reimbursed Michael Cohen for Stormy Daniels Hush Money, Says Rudy Giuliani

Stormy Daniels Lawsuit against Michael Cohen Put on Hold for 90 Days

Michael Cohen’s Documents to Be Reviewed by Special Master Barbara Jones

Last month, Michael Cohen released audio tapes of him and Donald Trump allegedly discussing one of the payments before the election.

Michael Cohen, who was Donald Trump’s personal lawyer for more than a decade, admitted passing on funds to two women thought to be Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

The hush money payments were not reported to the Federal Election Commission during the campaign.

The question is whether the payments were made to protect Donald Trump’s personal reputation or to protect his image as a presidential candidate.

Under US election rules, any payments made with the aim of influencing a vote must be reported.

Michael Cohen acknowledged in court that the aim was indeed to protect Donald Trump’s candidacy, saying he had paid the money “at the direction” of Trump “for the principal purpose of influencing the election”.

If Donald Trump were to be prosecuted over the money – not through the normal courts, because he is the sitting president, but conceivably in Congress, through an impeachment process – investigators would have to prove that he had indeed given the money to Michael Cohen for electoral reasons.

In his first public comments, back in April, about his alleged affair with Stormy Daniels, President Trump denied knowing about the $130,000 payment made to the actress via Michael Cohen.

Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, alleges that she and Donald Trump had met in a hotel room in 2006.

Asked by a reporter in the press cabin of Air Force One if he had any knowledge about where Michel Cohen had got the money to pay Stormy Daniels, President Trump responded at the time: “I don’t know.”

The following month, the president officially disclosed a payment to Michael Cohen of between $100,001 and $250,000 for expenses incurred in 2016.

Michael Cohen has reached a plea deal with prosecutors, which may see his prison sentence reduced from 65 years to five years and three months.

On the same day that Michael Cohen pleaded guilty, a jury convicted former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of bank and tax fraud charges.

It was the first criminal trial arising from the justice department probe led by former FBI chief Robert Mueller.

Robert Mueller has been investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, and whether the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to swing the election in his favor.

Russia has denied claims it interfered in the elections.

There is no confirmation that Michael Cohen will speak to Robert Mueller’s Russia inquiry but his personal lawyer has said his client is happy to talk.

4 Common Health-Related Myths Debunked

0

When it comes to your physical well-being, what you don’t know can very much hurt you. And while the internet has provided society with a myriad of benefits, it also contributes to the spread of some very silly rumors. Unfortunately, certain health-related myths have been perpetuated across the web for years and have convinced many people of their veracity. That’s why we’re here to sift through four common myths and separate fact from fiction. Check these out now and learn how to start handling your health better today:

Cracking Joints Leads to Arthritis

Simply put, cracking your knuckles won’t make you any more prone to developing arthritis later on in life. People who do crack their knuckles, like those who don’t, have about the same probability. So crack away if you feel like it!

You Can Catch an STD from a Toilet Seat

STDs are some of the most common, yet misunderstood infections around, and this is just one outlandish rumor associated with them. The truth is though, in just about every case, STDs can’t persist outside of the body. That means casual contact with an infected person –– or sitting on a toilet seat –– won’t put you at risk for contracting an STD.

Weight Loss is all about Willpower

In one sense, yes, it does require strong force of will to stick to a dietary regimen within a busy schedule, but to think that all weight loss is down to forcing yourself to exercise and eat healthy is incorrect. A number of biological and genealogical factors influence a person’s weight, and it’s highly reductive to suggest losing weight is as easy as adopting a new mindset.

Mental Health Issues are Rare

Fortunately, we’ve come a long way toward destigmatizing mental-health issues from a cultural standpoint. Nevertheless, the falsehood that mental-health problems are rare still persists. The opposite, in fact, is true. Around twenty percent of Americans deal with some form of mental health issue, and many children (around one in ten) experience serious depression during adolescence.

The Bottom Line

Many people don’t understand certain health and science intricacies because they don’t want to educate themselves. After all, it can be frightening to see a doctor –– even for something as routine as a checkup. The truth is though, there’s nothing to fear from a stethoscope or a luer adapter or any other medical instrument. And the more active a role you take in learning about your health and seeking sound medical advice, the better off you’ll be for it.

How the FitBit Device Measures Your Sleeping Habits

0

Sleep — the most basic of things to do to keep your body healthy and your mind sharp. But it seems that even this is as difficult as pushing ourselves to go to the gym every week. There are many reasons why sleep is difficult for us like a condition that prevents us from doing so, or due to mountains of work that needs finishing.

Regardless of the reason, not getting enough sleep exposes us to serious illnesses like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease. For this reason, tracking devices for sleep are becoming increasingly popular. In a fast-paced world where sleep has become a privilege, it is important that we consciously keep track of it.

Tracking devices like the FitBitVersa, is equipped with technology that can help us get the best sleep possible. It seems you will not be getting one just to count your steps for the day, but to track your “ZZZs” at night too.

How does the FitBit Sleep Feature work?

When you consult a sleep specialist, you will be asked to stay in the hospital so they can measure your stages of rest. They will use an instrument called an electroencephalogram which measures brain activity and muscle movements.

The FitBit technology works mostly in the same way as the electroencephalogram. What it does is measure your heart rate and movement all night. Based on those the data gathered, it will make intelligent guesses on your sleep cycle.

Of course, this does not mean a FitBit is a viable replacement for a sleep doctor. But it can give you a general idea on how often you get to the deep sleep level and for how long.

Different levels of sleep

To give users a better picture of what their sleeping cycle looks like, FitBit worked with the National Sleep Foundation to show the four different stages of sleep. These are what you will expect to see when your FitBit shows you your sleep data.

Awake  – Waking up in the middle of the night is completely normal, especially if you are going to take care of bodily needs such as peeing or drinking water. It is also normal to wake up from a dream or move around a few times.

Light Sleep – This stage is when you are still aware of your surroundings even if you are asleep — the early stage of the sleep cycle. You can still be easily woken up in this stage, and may still even lose sleep. Light sleep already has the capacity to re-energize your mind and body, which is why power naps are helpful at times when you cannot sleep for long.

Deep Sleep – In deep sleep, you will become less responsive to outside stimuli because your body is in its most relaxed state. This is when your body starts healing and recovering from the day’s activities. While sleeping patterns are different from person to person, as observed, we get lesser deep sleep when get older. This is partly because the body produces less melatonin and many adults are magnesium deficient. To achieve deep sleep some use prescriptions like Ambien or a natural sleep aid, such as Better Rest which contains both melatonin and magnesium.

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) – This is the second stage of deep sleep where you brain becomes active even when you are sound asleep. Dreams happen in this stage, but your muscles are inactive so that you will not act out what you are seeing. Additionally, this is when your brain starts storing your memories in your long-term memory bank.

When you access the sleep cycle data on or FitBit Versa, these are the four stages you will be seeing. Pay close attention to how long it took you to get to deep sleep and REM, because that will determine whether you will need to consult with a specialist or just need to take a leave from work to get a much needed rest.

Leaving It Behind: 4 Cornerstones of Making Sure You Never Relapse into Drugs

0

As victorious as recovery feels, it doesn’t end with rehab. It continues one day at a time for the rest of your life. Along the way, most addicts do relapse. But whether or not this turns out being a temporary misstep, or a complete backslide in your former life, is up to you. Here are four principles that will help you stay clean.

  1. Develop a new routine.

No one knows the power of habit quite like an addict. Some aren’t even aware of how deeply substance abuse is ingrained into their daily lives until they try to do routine tasks while sober. This can be incredibly challenging, which is why you must create a fresh daily routine to match your new start.

This includes healthier sleep habits and regular meals, but can also impact what routes we drive, which stores we visit, and where we decide to work. Many in recovery find that moving away and beginning in an entirely new place is the most effective way they can avoid prompt relapse.

Image result for d toxic relationships

  1. End toxic relationships.

It goes without saying that one clean and sober partner will be incredibly challenged staying with one who still uses. Still, any relationship where emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse takes place is a trigger.

It’s not just about avoiding the addictive substance; you must extricate yourself from relationships that could lead you into wanting to use. On top of this, you no longer have room for relationships with people who don’t take your addiction seriously and are unsupportive of your sobriety.

  1. Connect with other people and activities.

For some people in recovery, the ending of toxic relationships can find them feeling rather lonely, like there is no one left who knows what they’re going through. But on the bright side, here’s an opportunity to forge new relationships, or strengthen existing ones with people who want to be there for you and support you.

Speak about how you’re feeling with people you trust. Don’t assume that they’re not interested, or won’t “get it”. They can only be supportive if you let them in. And while you’re at it, try something new to fill your free time. Running, knitting, fixing cars – it only matters that you enjoy the distraction.

  1. Keep up with your treatment.

Far and away, this is the one rule that can make or break your recovery. Follow the advice of your therapist or doctor when it comes to counseling, medication, and more. Rehab facilities like those found at https://arcproject.org.uk/rehab-centres know that the work you do after rehab is every bit as important.

Attend group sessions and meetings if recommended, and actively stay on top of your steps. Becoming complacent and “forgetting” your addiction is a sure way to suddenly find yourself back at the bottom.

Finally, always remember what we said at the start – relapses of all sizes and scales are very common. If you do relapse, it’s vital that you don’t lose hope or feel as though you’ve “ruined” your progress. Revisit your guiding principles often, and you can get clean as many times as is necessary.

#MeToo Accuser Asia Argento Accused of Assault Herself

One of the #MeToo accusers, Italian actress Asia Argento, has reportedly been accused of assault herself.

Asia Argento was one of the first to speak out against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The New York Times reports that legal documents show the actress paid a former co-star $380,000 after he alleged she had assaulted him in a California hotel room in 2013.

A lawyer for Asia Argento declined to comment on the allegations.

The actress’ accuser, Jimmy Bennett was just 17 at the time. The age of consent in California is 18.

Asia Argento would have been 37 at the time of the encounter.

Jimmy Bennett says in the documents that the encounter traumatized him and threatened his mental health and career, the New York Times reported.

He had played Asia Argento’s young son in a 2004 film.

In the documents seen by the paper, Asia Argento’s lawyer said that the money was given to Jimmy Bennett to help him, and that it was Argento who had been preyed upon.

In a statement published by Vanity Fair, a lawyer for Jimmy Bennett said his client would not comment but would take the “next 24 hours, or longer, to prepare his response”.

A lawyer for Harvey Weinstein said the development revealed “a stunning level of hypocrisy by Asia Argento”.

Another high-profile accuser of Harvey Weinstein, Rose McGowan, has also reacted to the reports, tweeting: “I got to know Asia Argento ten months ago. Our commonality is the shared pain of being assaulted by Harvey Weinstein. My heart is broken. I will continue my work on behalf of victims everywhere. None of us know the truth of the situation and I’m sure more will be revealed. Be gentle.”

Greece Ends Three-Year Bailout Plan with EU

Greece has successfully completed a three-year eurozone emergency loan program worth €61.9 billion ($70.8 billion) to tackle its debt crisis.

It was part of the biggest bailout in global financial history, totaling some €289 billion, which will take the country decades to repay.

Deeply unpopular cuts to public spending, a condition of the bailout, are set to continue.

However, for the first time in eight years, Greece can borrow at market rates.

Greece’s economy has grown slowly in recent years and is still 25% smaller than when the crisis began.

The EU’s Commissioner on Economic and Financial Affairs, Pierre Moscovici, said: “From today, Greece will be treated like any other Europe area country.”

Greece’s reforms had, Pierre Moscovici said, “laid the foundation for a sustainable recovery” but he also cautioned that its recovery was “not an event, it is a process”.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), only four countries have shrunk economically more than Greece in the past decade: Yemen, Libya, Venezuela and Equatorial Guinea.

Growing Your Business with Personal Encounters

0

Trade shows have been around for a while. Unfortunately, not everyone knows about them, and as a result, not everyone who plans to grow a business is aware of its existence and its benefits.

Businesses who do however, have enjoyed its benefits for a long time, especially those who have nice stands in Barcelona, London, Oslo, and Paris, for example. This draws the attention of the crowd, as well as other big names in the industry you are currently trying to become a part of. In addition, it also helps to be part of the shows in large cities.

So, how does nice stands in Barcelona or London help your business?

First and foremost, you have to remember that having nice stands is not only for aesthetic purposes. It is almost necessary in order to attract, not only foot traffic, but also encourage visitors to at least stop by your stand and look around.

Quality Over Quantity

Going back, some of the benefits that trade shows have for businesses is, as mentioned above, foot traffic which potentially can generate qualified leads. These leads are essentially people who are in substantive companies that may help talk or advertise to the right people. In turn, this will lead into much needed advertising that you may have not before you participated in the conference.

In fact, having nice stands in Barcelona or any other major city may help attract much needed foot traffic. However, as long as you catch the attention of the right people, that is more than enough.

Seeing Customers Eye-to-Eye

It is a lost art in this day and age, but nothing compares having a one-on-one conversation with potential customers. This is particularly true with buying clients who encounters your product for the first time. They will have problems that you may be able to fix.

On the other hand, they may have suggestions about problems that you can use to add to a product that you have down the pipeline that is geared towards the very problem that they are trying to fix. These suggestions may make your products better, or complete your product if they are still under development.

Like any relationship, business-customer relationship is a two-way street, and coming in contact with them in person is more beneficial than having them provide suggestions over surveys or the internet.

A Good Time to Research

In line with being able to meet your buying consumers face to face, trade shows are also the best time to conduct market research in a cost-effective manner. Without this chance, companies tend to spend more in order to do so through sales calls. Having them in front you not only help cut the cost by half, but also gives you an opportunity to answer some problems that they raise immediately.

Trade shows have always given businesses the perfect opportunity to not only show off nice stands in Barcelona, or any other city. It has also given them the opportunity to conduct research and allow them to grow their business because in order to do so, all it takes is one personal encounter with your buying customers to convince them that you are a brand to look out for.

Egypt Tightens Control over Internet with New Legislation

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has ratified a new law that tightens controls over the internet.

The law on “cybercrime” means websites can be blocked in Egypt if deemed to constitute a threat to national security or the economy.

According to the new legislation, anyone found guilty of running, or just visiting, such sites could face prison or a fine.

Egypt Church Attacks: President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi Declares Three-Month State of Emergency

Authorities say the new measures are needed to tackle instability and terrorism.

However, human rights groups accuse the government of trying to crush all political dissent in Egypt.

The Cairo-based Association of Freedom of Thought and Expression said more than 500 websites had already been blocked in Egypt prior to the new law being signed.

Last month, another bill was passed by parliament, yet to be approved by the president, that would allow any social media accounts with more than 5,000 followers to be placed under supervision.

Correspondents says that with street protests in Egypt all but banned, the internet has been one of the last forums left for Egyptians to express dissent.

Last month, Human Rights Watch issued a warning that Egyptian authorities were increasingly using counterterrorism and state-of-emergency laws and courts to unjustly prosecute journalists, activists, and critics for peaceful criticism.

Those recently arrested include the well-known blogger and rights defender Wael Abbas; Amal Fathy, a political activist and the wife of the head of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms; and the comic Shady Abu Zaid.

Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, known for hits like Respect and Think, has passed away in Detroit at the age of 76.

She was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and only announced last year when she was retiring from music.

The legendary singer won 18 Grammys, and had 17 Top Ten US chart hits over a music career spanning seven decades.

Aretha Franklin gave her final performance in November 2017 at a gala in New York held in aid of the Elton John Aids Foundation.

In a statement, the singer’s family said: “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart.

“We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins knew no bounds.”

Aretha Franklin’s family also confirmed her death was due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type.

Born in Memphis to a gospel singer/pianist and a celebrated Baptist preacher, Aretha Franklin was tutored from an early age by such gospel stars as Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward.

Aretha Franklin struggled to find fame in the early years, with record label Columbia unsure how to frame her impressively powerful voice.

After moving to Atlantic Records in 1966, the singer broke through, and released some of her most iconic songs like Respect soon after the switch.

By 1968 Aretha Franklin was renowned throughout America and Europe as “Lady Soul” – a symbol of black pride who appeared on the cover of Time and was given an award by Martin Luther King.

Reaction to Aretha Franklin’s death has poured in throughout on August 16 – as high-profile figures paid tribute to her musical legacy and commitment to US civil rights.

Mariah Carey paid tribute to the Queen of Soul on Twitter, calling her an inspiration, mentor and friend.

In the world of politics, President Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka tweeted tributes to the soul star.

Former President Barack Obama, whose inauguration Aretha Franklin performed at, released an emotive statement with his wife Michelle saying the legendary’s music “helped define the American Experience”.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Thuong Go on Trial

0

Two women who killed Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, will go on trial, after a judge said evidence suggested they knew what they were doing.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Thuong smeared the toxic nerve agent VX on Kim Jong-nam’s face in Kuala Lumpur airport last year.

However, the women deny murder, saying they were told they taking part in a TV prank.

Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Thuong could face the death penalty if convicted.

Four North Korean men also charged over the murder are still at large.

Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-un, had been waiting to board a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Macau on February 13, 2017, when two women approached him in the departure area.

Kim Jong-nam Murder: Women Suspects Plead Not Guilty in Malaysia Trial

What Is VX Nerve Agent that Killed Kim Jong-nam?

CCTV footage shows one woman placing her hands over his face before she and the other woman leave the scene.

Kim Jong-nam is then seen seeking medical help – he told staff a chemical had been sprayed on him.

He died on the way to hospital from what was later found to have been exposure to the VX, one of the most toxic of all known chemical agents.

Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Huong – both in their 20s – have said they were innocent victims of an elaborate North Korean plot.

Their lawyers say that in the days before Kim Jong-nam’s death, the women had been paid to take part in pranks where they wiped liquid on people at airports, hotels and shopping malls.

They thought the airport was just another prank.

Their lawyers had expressed confidence that the court would see they had no motive to kill Kim Jong-nam.

However, Judge Azmi Ariffin said there was enough evidence to suggest it was “a well-planned conspiracy between the women and the four North Koreans at large”.

He said there was no hidden crew and no attempt to bring the target in on the joke afterwards, and that the footage “showed that they had the knowledge that the liquid on their hands was toxic”.

They will now go on trial for murder and could be hanged if found guilty.

Kim Jong-nam was the older half-brother of Kim Jong-un.

He was once seen as a future leader of North Korea, but when his father died, was bypassed in favor of the younger Kim.

Kim Jong-nam was largely estranged from the family, and spent most of his time overseas in Macau, mainland China and Singapore.

He had spoken out in the past against his family’s dynastic control of North Korea and in a 2012 book was quoted as saying he believed his half-brother lacked leadership qualities.

North Korea has fiercely denied any involvement in the killing.

Four men – believed to be North Koreans who left Malaysia on the day of the murder – have also been charged in the case, but have not been found.

Judge Azmi Ariffin said on August 16: “I cannot rule out that this could be a political assassination. Despite that, I am unable to confirm this fact.”

Italy: Highway Bridge Collapse Kills at Least 26 in Genoa

At least 26 people were killed and other 15 severly injured in Genoa, Italy, after a dramatic collapse of a highway bridge.

Dozens of vehicles fell 45m (148ft).

Rescuers are now searching into the night for possible survivors

Reports say cries can be heard from people trapped in the debris. Twelve people are said to be missing.

Some 300 firefighters from across Italy have been using sniffer dogs and climbing gear in the search.

Hundreds of people were evacuated amid fears other parts of the bridge might fall.

The cause of the bridge’s collapse, which occurred during torrential rain, was not immediately clear but questions had been raised about the safety of the structure.

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has vowed to bring anyone responsible for the collapse to book.

The Morandi Bridge, built in the 1960s, stands on the A10 toll highway, an important conduit for goods traffic from local ports, which also serves the Italian Riviera and southern coast of France.

The Italian fire service tweeted a video of one person being extracted and carefully lowered on cables from a shattered vehicle, which was suspended in the wreckage of the bridge, high above the ground.

Between 30 and 35 cars and three heavy vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

A huge tower and sections of the bridge collapsed on to railway lines, a river and a warehouse. Reports suggest that nobody was killed on the ground, although some people were injured.

A section measuring about 200 meters fell at around 11:30 local time. Police say there was a violent cloudburst at the time.

An unnamed witness quoted by Italy’s Ansa news agency said: “We heard an incredible roar and first we thought it was thunder very close by.

“We live about 5km [3 miles] from the bridge but we heard a crazy bang… We were very scared… Traffic went completely haywire and the city was paralyzed.”

The collapse of the bridge was an “incident of vast proportions on a vital arterial road, not just for Genoa, but for the whole country”, said the governor of Liguria region, Giovanni Toti.

“The Morandi bridge connects three major ports in our country, used by tens, even hundreds of thousands of people. They depart from these ports on holiday. These docks receive most of our country’s imported goods. It damages the very structure of the Italian logistics system. We are expecting a very fast response from the government.”

The new government has pledged to increase public investment.

Italy spent more than €14 billion ($16 billion) on its roads in 2006 but that had dropped to less than €4 billion after the 2008 financial crisis, after the according to data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The figures cover spending on new transport construction and the improvement of the existing networks.

Westminster Car Attack: Suspect Arrested after Swerving into Pedestrians

A suspect has been held in London on suspicion of terrorism offences after a car crashed outside the Houses of Parliament.

The car swerved into cyclists and pedestrians on August 14, injuring three people.

The 29-year-old man is not believed to be known to MI5 or counter-terrorism police, and is not co-operating with officers. Searches are taking place in Birmingham and Nottingham.

Two people were treated in hospital for their injuries but discharged.

Neil Basu, the Scotland Yard’s head of counter terrorism, said: “Given that this appears to be a deliberate act, the method and this being an iconic site, we are treating it as a terrorist incident.”

The assistant commissioner added there was “no intelligence at this time of further danger” to London or the UK as a whole.

No-one else was in the car and no weapons have been found.

The government held a meeting of its Cobra emergency committee and PM Theresa May has paid tribute to the “formidable courage” and professionalism of the emergency services who “ran towards a dangerous situation in order to protect the public”.

Urging the public to remain vigilant but “carry on as normal”, the prime minister added: “For the second time in as many years the home of our democracy, which is a potent symbol of our precious values of tolerance and freedom, has witnessed terrible scenes just yards from its door.”

The suspect, who has not been named, is being held at a south London police station and the vehicle is being searched.

According to sources, the suspect is from the Birmingham area.

A number of eyewitnesses have said the silver Ford Fiesta, which was travelling westbound in Parliament Square, appeared to deliberately hit members of the public as it swerved into the opposite lane.

The car traveled from Birmingham to London on the previous night, arriving in the capital just after midnight.

Westminster subway station was closed for entry and exit, and streets around Millbank and Parliament Square cordoned off for several hours after the crash.

The immediate area around the incident remains taped off and screened by white temporary fencing.

The British parliament is not currently sitting.

Turkey to Boycott US Electronic Goods Following Punitive Sanctions

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced his country will boycott US electronic products, after Washington imposed punitive sanctions on Ankara.

President Erdogan said, referring to Apple and its South Korean competitor: “If [the US] has the iPhone, there’s Samsung on the other side.”

Last week, the US doubled tariffs over Turkey’s refusal to extradite US pastor Andrew Brunson who is imprisoned there.

Turkey’s weakened currency, the lira, plunged by a full 20% in response.

President Erdogan said his country was taking measures to stabilize the economy, and should not “give in to the enemy” by investing in foreign currencies.

At a news conference on August 14, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is visiting Ankara, branded the US sanctions an illegitimate policy. He accused the US of seeking an unfair competitive advantage in global trade.

Since January, the Turkish lira has lost more than 34% of its value against the dollar, pushing up the price of everyday items.

President Donald Trump tweeted: “I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar! Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!”

US and Turkey Mutually Suspend Most Visa Services Following Diplomatic Row

President Erdogan has presided over soaring inflation and borrowing levels, but insists the lira’s plight is the result of a “campaign” led by foreign powers.

In a TV address last week, President Erdogan called on Turkish citizens to exchange foreign currency and gold for lira, calling it an “economic war”.

Now it appears there may be a small respite for the flailing currency, which has gained slightly in value after days of dramatic falls.

Turkey’s central bank has promised to provide banks with liquidity. The  finance minister – who is also President Erdogan’s son-in-law – will seek to reassure around 1,000 international investors in a teleconference scheduled for August 16.

President Erdogan has accused the US of trying to “bring Turkey to its knees through threats over a pastor”.

However, the US insists Andrew Brunson, a long-time Turkish resident who ran the tiny Izmir Resurrection Church, is “a victim of unfair and unjust detention”.

An evangelical from North Carolina, Andrew Brunson has been held in Turkey for nearly two years over alleged links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party and the Gulenist movement, which Turkey blames for a failed coup in 2016.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the US had seen “no evidence that Pastor Brunson has done anything wrong”.

Andrew Brunson has denied charges of espionage, but faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty.

The ruckus between Turkey and the US has impacted on other countries’ currencies, including the Indian rupee, as investors fear the lira’s wobbles could spread to developing nations.

On August 14, India’s government urged people not to panic on Tuesday after the rupee slid to an all-time low against the dollar.

Brazil Russia, Argentina, South Africa and Mexico have also seen their currencies fall over the last week.

The 6 Ways IT Has Transformed Team Communication

The recent news that Apple has become the first trillion-dollar company by market cap in history is indicative of how much technology has revolutionized the world. While IT has infiltrated virtually every part of everyday living, nowhere else has it had as much of an impact as in the business world.

Technology has improved the efficiency and impact of business processes by several orders of magnitude. Communication in particular has seen dramatic changes. Here is a look at how workplace team communication is no longer the same thanks to IT.

  • Speed

Electronic communication has long displaced snail mail as the primary means of business communication. It’s actually difficult to imagine how companies communicate with one another and with their remote branches just three decades ago.

Electronic communication via email, IP telephony, live chat, social media platforms, shared file servers and more has slashed the time it took to relay a document from several hours or days to just a couple of seconds. In more technical teams, tools for analyzing logs and aggregating data have also made hastened decision-making.

  • Seamless Collaboration

Technology has simplified collaboration in teams. Apps like Slack have made it possible for one to communicate with multiple teams quickly. Team members can disseminate information to the entire group or target it to an individual or a subset of the wider team.

You can now take your communication even further via Slack Integrations with Tray.io

Communication is not limited to voice and text-based messages. Files, images and videos can be shared with the team in order to clarify things that may be hard to explain in speech or writing only.

  • Increased Morale

Millennials are gradually becoming the most dominant generation at the workplace. For the advancement of technology, this is a positive development. Millennials have spent the majority of their lives depending on and interacting with IT.

They are not only less likely than preceding generations to resist workplace changes brought about by technology but are also more keen to celebrate such transitions. With majority of office team members bound to be Millennials, IT is therefore proving to be a great morale booster.

  • Remote Supervision

One of the benefits of the Internet has been to shrink the world into a small interconnected virtual village. This has made coordination between remote branches of multinational organizations easier and even facilitated telecommuting as a viable way to work.

Through tech, managers can better lead and personally supervise remote team members. Email, messaging apps, file sharing and video conferencing have all added multiple layers of communication features that make those working from far feel more connected to the rest of the team. This enhances camaraderie.

  • Decentralization

Social media networks like Facebook initially started as a fun informal way for people to keep in touch with their friends and family. That has changed and not only is social media now a tool of business but has also influenced how proprietary business communication tools are designed.

Social media features like mentions, news feeds, informalism and cross-level participation are increasingly incorporated in business communication thus changing how decisions are made and work is executed.

One of the consequences of this is the disintegration of bureaucracy. This creates a more informal and ad hoc structure thus ensuring majority of team decisions are made lower down in the hierarchy.

  • Effective Coaching

‘This call may be monitored or recorded for quality assurance and training purposes.’ We’ve all heard this phrase in its various forms numerous times before and perhaps don’t pay too much attention to it anymore. Yet, this is just another example of how technology is bettering team communication.

The call libraries companies create from these recorded conversations are used in training sales teams, demonstrating best practice and cautioning on how a call could go wrong. Using actual calls is a much more effective training tool than role-playing.

It’s not possible to cover here all the ways IT has transformed communication. These examples only scratch the surface. What is certain is that the influence of technology on communication will only continue to grow.

Venezuela: President Nicolas Maduro to End Cheap Fuel

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said the country’s subsidized fuel prices should rise, to stop smugglers cheating the country out of billions of dollars.

He said in a TV address: “Gasoline must be sold at an international price to stop smuggling to Colombia and the Caribbean.”

Like many oil producing nations, Venezuela offers its citizens heavily subsidized petrol.

A fuel price rise in 1989 caused deadly riots in Caracas.

The country’s economy is in freefall, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicting inflation rates will reach a million percent this year – but the price of fuel has barely changed.

Petro: Venezuela Launches Ethereum-Based Cryptocurrency

The price of a liter of petrol in Venezuela currently stands at 1 bolivar. On the black market, Venezuelans pay more than 4 million bolivares for one US dollar.

That means that for the equivalent of one dollar, Venezuelans can fill the tank of a medium-sized car about 720 times.

Smuggling the subsidized fuel from Venezuela into neighboring countries, where prices are much higher, is big business.

According to government figures, Venezuela loses $18 billion to fuel smuggling annually. President Maduro says adapting Venezuelan fuel prices to international levels will stamp out smuggling.

The move is part of a wider plan to increase government revenue in the face of falling oil production, the country’s main export income.

According to President Maduro “only those individuals who don’t answer the call to register will have to pay fuel at international prices”.

He said that all Venezuelans who hold the “Fatherland ID”, a government-issued identity card introduced by his administration in 2017, will continue to receive “direct subsidies” for “about two years”.

However, many Venezuelans opposed to Bicolas Maduro’s government have refused to get the ID cards, alleging they are used by officials to keep tabs on them.

President Maduro introduced the new ID card in January 2017 arguing it would serve to make his socialist government’s social programs more effective.

The price rise is therefore expected to hit opponents of President Maduro in greater numbers than those who support him.

Nicolas Maduro said he would announce further details of how the new subsidies scheme would work in the coming days. It is expected to come into effect on August 20.

What Makes A Strong Economy

According to The Balance (a personal finance website), a healthy economy is where unemployment and inflation are in balance. That is, the “natural rate of unemployment will be between 4.7 percent and 5.8 percent” while the “target inflation rate will be 2.0 percent.”

A healthy economy is traditionally defined and measured in terms of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or “the total value of everything produced by all people and companies in the country.” Therefore, if the GDP growth rate is healthy and thereby sustainable, “the economy stays in the expansion phase of the business cycle as long as possible” which leads to a positive change in the level of goods and services production, high level of employment, and ultimately, increased standard of living – thus, economic growth.

However, on a side note, more growth isn’t always better or healthier. Think about it as a body temperature – If the temperature is lower than the ideal, the body is sick. If too low, it is near death. Similarly, a higher temperature could mean fever. If beyond that, the body is deathly ill.

There is, therefore, a need for balance. And there are several key components that are detrimental to achieve this. In one way or another, they affect the economic growth in a helpful or hampering way but without them, it is quite impossible for a country’s economy to stay in the “ideal zone”.

Following are the important factors that make a strong economy:

Natural Resources

“Natural resources are materials from the earth that people use to meet their needs” and therefore, an abundance of it can give a head start as it could increase a country’s production capacity.

Natural resources can be categorized into two major types being renewable and non-renewable.

Renewable resources are “those that are used at a slower rate than they are replaced” which include water, animals, plants, wind, and the sun. Whilst non-renewable resources are “those that are used faster than Nature can create” like natural gas and minerals.

A country that is blessed with rich natural resources could give it an advantage towards the growth path. But it does not necessarily mean that countries with lesser natural resources will not. The exploitation and utilization of these resources depend on the skills and abilities of the labor force, technology, and availability of capital. A country with a skilled and educated workforce could spur growth, otherwise, it is most likely to struggle.

Related image

Human Resource

Countries (especially the less-developed ones), even those with high amounts of natural resources, will lag behind if they fail to improve the skills and education of their workers.

Human resource is defined as “the people that staff and operates an organization.” The same as in a company setting, a country with skilled, well-trained, and well-educated workforce is more likely to be more productive and could produce high-quality outputs that add efficiency to the economy.

On the other hand, an under-utilized, illiterate, and unskilled workforce could be a deterrent to economic growth as it will become a drag on the economy and could lead to higher possibilities of unemployment.

Physical Capital

Reducing the cost and increasing the efficiency of economic output will lead to higher productivity. Thus, capital formation is necessary for a country’s economic progress. It includes producing and acquiring land, building, machinery, power, transportation, and medium of communication.

“Capital formation increases the availability of capital per worker” which consequently raises the productivity of labor and results in an efficient output and economic growth.

Political and social factors

To a considerable extent, political and social factors contribute to making a stronger and healthier economy.

According to a research study titled “The Impact of Political Determinants on Economic Growth in CEE Countries”, “it is impossible to analyze a country’s economy by taking into account only the market factors.” Therefore, political factors are important to analyze the economic process and observe “to what extent and in what direction the political determinants of a state government affect its economic performance.”

Such determinants include regime type, political stability and instability, policy management, corruption, and the laws.

Meanwhile, social factors or (as it is commonly referred to) social economics examine the relationship between social behavior and economics. These include the following factors,

Lifestyles. A country’s way of living plays a crucial role in economic growth. For instance, a society that resists the adoption of modern ways of living and continues with conventional beliefs and superstitions will less likely to achieve improvement.

Sex distribution. Sex ratio, also, has pervasive effects on humans because it influences consumer behavior and economic decisions. In a study (based on a male-biased sex ratio) done in 2012, it was found that “monetary decisions and consumer spending are related to mating effort – increased mating effort is associated with increased male desire for immediate rewards and increased male spending on conspicuous consumption products.”

Family size and structure. The place of a family within the society largely depends on the economic functions it performs. Specifically, the size of a family which relationship with economic growth is quite controversial. A low-income country with larger family sizes may have slow development, whilst smaller family sizes in high-income countries could create social and economic problems.

Additionally, family structure and economic well-being are correlated. For example, the U.S. economy is strongly related to marriage.

According to a research – marriage, which creates intact family structures, are found to “outperform all other sexual partnering structures; hence the economy rises with intactness” and encounters fewer difficulties and inefficiencies. Divorce, on the other hand, rises poverty – that is, non-intact family structures are six times more impoverished than the married families.

Similarly, Ted Khalaf, an experienced family divorce lawyer of Divorce Lawyers Los Angeles, believes that “divorce is bad for the economy.” Speaking from experience and concerned with the growing divorce rate,, Khalaf explained that throughout the divorce process, the rate of income increase for a man drops almost to that of his always-single counterpart. “It is common misconception that higher divorce rate will lead to stronger economy. This is simply not true.”

O Marisquino 2018: More than 300 Injured as Platform Collapses into Sea at Spanish Festival

At least 300 people have been injured, five seriously, after a section of wooden platform collapsed at O Marisquino urban sports and music festival in the north-west city of Vigo, Spain.

The platform had been packed with people watching a rap artist at the two-day O Marisquiño event in Galicia.

According to eyewitnesses, the wooden platform gave way during the first song of the concert as Rels B, who had just started his performance, told the crowd to jump, local media report.

Police confirmed that there were no known fatalities.

Witnesses reported scenes of panic as people – many of them teenagers – tried to scramble to safety. Some fell into the sea.

Personal effects such as mobile phones and handbags were left scattered on the ground.

Several emergency teams attended to the injured, and divers were sent into the sea to check that no-one was trapped beneath the structure.

The incident happened shortly before midnight on August 12 as a crowd was listening to the Majorcan rap artist Rels B.

Earlier, the regional health minister, Jesus Vazquez Almuina, told local radio about the nature of the injuries people suffered.

He said: “These are provisional figures, patients are still being evaluated… The vast majority are light injuries for bruises. There are five hospitalizations, mainly broken bones and some head injuries.”

In a tweet, Rels B wished “strength” to the injured and advised anyone worried about friends or relatives to contact an emergency information point set up by festival organizers.

The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, has said there will be an investigation into the causes of the incident.

It is not yet clear whether the platform collapsed because there were too many people on it, or because the structure itself was weak, or whether other factors were involved.

President Trump Tweets Support of Harley-Davidson Boycott

President Donald Trump has tweeted that it is “great” that many Harley-Davidson owners plan to boycott the company as a row over tariffs escalates.

Two months ago, Harley-Davidson said it would move some production out of the US to avoid retaliatory tariffs from the EU.

President Trump has already attacked the move, threatening Harley with higher taxes.

He tweeted: “Many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great! Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors. A really bad move! U.S. will soon have a level playing field, or better.”

Harley-Davidson refused to comment on President Trump’s latest criticism, but pointed to an interview CEO Matthew Levatich did with CNBC last month.

President Trump Criticizes Harley-Davidson for Planning to Shift Production to Avoid EU Tariffs

In the interview, Matthew Levatich said the company’s preference “in all cases is to supply the world from the United States”.

He said, however, that Harley-Davidson had invested in international manufacturing over the past 20 years because “trade and tariff situations in certain markets” made it “prohibitive” without this investment.

Matthew Levatich said: “We’re only doing that because these are important growth markets for the company that, without those investments, we wouldn’t have access to those customers, at any kind of reasonable price.”

Harley-Davidson warned last month that its profit margins this year were likely to halve as trade tariffs bit.

The company expects added costs of $45 million-$50 million this year, due to the EU tariffs, as well as higher aluminum and steel prices.

It said in June it would shift some motorcycle production away from the US to avoid the “substantial” burden of EU tariffs.

It has assembly plants in Australia, Brazil, India and Thailand as well as in the US, but it has not said which plant would take up the extra production.

President Trump has said tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which came into force this spring, are necessary to protect the US steel and aluminum industries – he maintains these are vital for national security.

The tariffs have drawn retaliation from the EU, Canada, Mexico, India and others while driving up the cost of metals for manufacturers in the US.

The US has also threatened to hit billions of Chinese imports with import taxes, some of which are already in effect. It is also considering tariffs on foreign cars and vehicle parts.
