A woman became a victim of William Jameson, an old friend contacted via Facebook, who lured her to an isolated shed where she was bound, gagged and raped.

The man, William Jameson, 48, who unknown to the woman had a history of violence including manslaughter, attempted murder and child rape, then left the victim tied up with a rope around her neck.

The 31-year-old woman, who is a civil servant and cannot be named for legal reasons, managed to free her feet and force her way out of the building with her wrists still tied by electric cable.

She frantically tried to raise the alarm and was seen by the driver of a passenger train as she ran alongside a railway track in Wiltshire waving her bound hands, an image which was caught by the onboard CCTV.

The victim then managed to reach a nearby farmhouse where, distressed and covered in mud and blood, she got help.

Sex offender William Jameson was jailed for life after he bound, gagged and raped a woman contacted via Facebook

The woman, who worked in the civil service in Ireland, first met William Jameson, who she knew as Liam, in 2004 when they were on a computer course.

The woman had suffered from delusions that a relative was being held against their will in hospital, which married William Jameson knew about and preyed upon.

William Jameson enticed her to England saying he would help free the family member.

William Jameson cheated her out of £18,000 ($27,000), saying he needed the money to pay for the relative’s “escape” and to buy some land in Wiltshire which they would sell at a profit.

In November 2010, William Jameson took the woman to a patch of land near the village of Minety, Wiltshire, under the pretence of meeting a nurse with the relative there.

When Jameson got the woman into the shed, he forced her to the ground and tied her hands and feet with electric cable, binding it behind her back.

The attacker put a gag in her mouth and tied a rope around her neck and started to strangle her, saying she was going to be his “sex slave”.

William Jameson told the woman he was “a dangerous and violent man” and that he had been in prison in Belfast for rape and attempted murder.

Prosecutor Kerry Barker told Swindon Crown Court the woman offered William Jameson more money in a bid to get him to leave her, but he was not interested and raped her.

After William Jameson went outside to answer his phone the woman heard him leave and she managed to free her feet after removing a shoe and sock.

The victim then forced the shed door and, with her hands still tied, got to the railway line before running to a nearby farm to raise the alarm.

After William Jameson was arrested police searched his home and found he had more than 1,500 sickening films and pictures of violent sexual child abuse on his computer.

William Jameson, of Finchampstead, Berkshire, pleaded guilty to rape, false imprisonment and ten counts of making indecent images of children.

Prosecutor Kerry Barker told the court that in 1986 William Jameson was jailed for 12 years for attempted murder, attempted rape, and other sex offences against a child.

William Jameson lured an 8-year-old girl from a Belfast street before putting a belt round her neck and sexually abusing her, then twice slammed a breeze block into her head in an attempt to kill her.

In 1998, William Jameson was jailed for 6 years in Dublin after a man died when he strangled him in a sex game.

William Jameson’s attorney, Alex Daymond said his client realized he presented a danger to the public and was facing a lengthy jail term, but urged it to not be a life term.

Alex Daymond said his client had been abused terribly as a child and while in custody on remand was clean of drugs and was even a “listener” for other prisoners.

Although the shed was kitted out with sex toys Alex Daymond said it was where William Jameson went to act out his alter ego, Julie-Ann, away from his wife and was not set up for the rape.

Jailing William Jameson for life, Recorder Peter Blair QC said: “You pose a considerable risk of serious harm to the public. This case falls fair and square into one that that demands a sentence of life imprisonment.

“Mr Daymond rightly observes that this sentence should be reserved for the most grave cases – in my judgment this is one of those.

“I am quite simply of the view that there is a significant risk of serious harm to the pubic. Your offences are considerably serious to justify such a sentence. I also take into account your previous convictions.”

William Jameson will not be allowed to seek parole for five years and must register as a sex offender for life.

200 passengers aboard a JetBlue flight diverted because of the unusual October snowstorm were forced to wait on the grounded plane for more than 7 hours with no food, water or working bathrooms.

At this moment, federal authorities are investigating why passengers aboard JetBlue flight 504 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Newark, New Jersey, were kept on the tarmac in “disgusting” conditions for so long after being diverted to Bradley International Airport in Connecticut.

Many passengers called 911 after receiving little explanation and the ordeal was only ended when police and firefighters came on board to help a paraplegic man who had difficulty with the circulation in his legs.

People wanting to leave were then told they could do so at their own risk, as the unseasonally early snow continued to fall. Loud cheers greeted the announcement.

200 passengers aboard a JetBlue flight diverted because of the unusual October snowstorm were forced to wait on the grounded plane for more than 7 hours with no food, water or working bathrooms

The JetBlue flight had left Florida at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and sat motionless on the Bradley runway from 01:30 p.m. to 09:00 p.m.

Andrew Carter, a football writer for the Sun Sentinel newspaper in Florida who was intending to cover today’s Miami Dolphins game against the New York Giants at the Meadowlands, was one of those left stranded, the Hartford Courant reported.

“Still on the plane. We haven’t moved. Now EWR closed. Getting ugly in here. People yelling wanting to get off,” Andrew Carter posted on Twitter just before 06:00 p.m.

“This is awful customer service,” Andrew Carter added to his followers.

“Still on the runway. Still blizzarding outside. Aren’t there rules about how long they can make people sit here?

“To answer questions we’re on Tarmac. No water. Bathrooms don’t work. Don’t know the reason why we’re stuck. It changes.

“Lady on board just broke down. Like that guy who cried in his cell at the beginning of Shawshank. Can someone sneak me in Rita Hayworth?”

While on the plane, Andrew Carter told the Hartford Courant via cell phone: “It’s been a long day. There’s been no real explanation as to why we’ve been sitting here for seven hours.

“We ran out of water. The bathrooms are all clogged up and disgusting. The power would go off every 45 minutes for five minutes or so, and that would freak people out. I’ve heard about these kind of stories.

“We’re close to the terminal. We can look out the window and see other planes.”

Andrew Carter said that while a few arguments popped up, passengers had mostly been well behaved.

Victoria Lucia, JetBlue spokeswoman said last night: “JetBlue is doing everything possible to ensure our customers affected by today’s unusual combination of weather and infrastructure issues are being well cared for.

“We apologize for the experience.”

The JetBlue flight was one of 23 aeroplanes diverted to Bradley Airport yesterday, according to Governor Dannel Malloy.

Connecticut was trying to move 1,000 cots to the airport late last night to help make stranded passengers comfortable, Governor Dannel Malloy said.

Bradley International Airport refused to comment.

The Boy Scouts of America has been accused of covering up the abuses of Rick Turley, a paedophile who was repeatedly allowed back as a leader despite admitting to abusing boys in his care.

Police has recently released documents showing that Boy Scouts of America officials didn’t call authorities after Rick Turley admitted molesting three boys and welcomed him back as a leader even after he kidnapped a boy in a stolen plane.

Rick Turley, now 58, said he is surprised at how many times he got away with it.

An investigation has found that Rick Turley molested at least 15 children in Southern California and British Columbia over 20 years, most of whom he met through American and Canadian Scouting.

“It was easy,” Rick Turley told CBC News.

Rick Turley said that he thinks if the police had been called in 1979 when he confessed to abusing three boys it “probably would have put a stop to me years and years ago”.

Instead, Rick Turley “went back to the Scouts again and again as a leader and offended against the boys,” he told CBC News.

Rick Turley is one of more than 5,000 suspected child molesters named in confidential files kept by the Boy Scouts of America.

An investigation has found that Rick Turley molested at least 15 children in Southern California and British Columbia over 20 years, most of whom he met through American and Canadian Scouting

Boy Scouts of America had long recommended that troops kept abuse allegations a secret.

In Rick Turley’s earlier known sexual abuse in 1971, he met Joey Day, a 10-year-old boy while working as a truck driver on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Rick Turley offered to take Joey Day to cubs, but instead took him to a nearby lake where he coerced him into skinny dipping and molested him.

Over the next two years, instead of taking the boy to cub meetings, Rick Turley took him to his apartment where he plied the boy alcohol, showed him pornography and abused him.

When Joey Day tried to tell his father about the abuse, he was beaten.

In January 1975, Rick Turley visited a Scout troop in Orange County and asked Eddy Iris, an 11-year-old boy, if he could show him around, saying he was one of Canada’s top Scout leaders.

Rick Turley shared a sleeping bag with Eddy Iris in the mountains, before taking him to the airport where he stole a plane and after taking off reportedly told the boy: “You do realize you’ve been kidnapped, don’t you?”

When the plane ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing, Rick Turley was arrested and pleaded guilty to child stealing.

Rick Turley was committed to Patton State Hospital as a “mentally disordered sex offender”.

He was released after 18 months on probation and ordered to return to Canada, but he instead got a job at a Boy Scout camp close to the hospital and worked at camps in San Bernardino and San Diego counties for the next three summer.

By 1978, Rick Turley had become a programme director at a Scout Camp in San Diego County. He persuaded the leader of a troop to let his son and two other boys stay at the camp for an extra night.

When they went home they reported that they had been arrested. Rick Turley admitted the offences but officials decided not to report them to police.

Buford Hill, a former Orange County Scouting official told the LA Times:

“We were following exactly the national recommendations of the Boy Scouts of America and its board who set up the rules.”

“You do not want to broadcast to the entire population that these things happen. You take care of it quietly and make sure it never happens again.”

Rick Turley returned to British Columbia where he became a Scout Master again.

At least two Canadian Scout leaders reported that Rick Turley had boys share his tent on trips.

In the mid 1980s, Boy Scouts officials decided rather than calling police or forcing Rick Turley to step down that he should be transferred to another troop.

In 1995, Rick Turley was arrested when his girlfriend told police that he was sexually attracted to children.

Rick Turley was sentenced to 7 years in prison, reduced to 5 on appeal, after he was convicted of five counts of molesting children.

In 2000, while out on parole Rick Turley was caught trying to coerce two boys into a relationship and was sent back to prison for two years.

Rick Turley now says that he is able to control his behaviour.

When questioned by CBC News at a motel in Alberta where Rick Turley now works he said that “it’s hard to put a number” on how many boys he abused.

Asked if he had a son, would he send him to Scouts, Turley said: “No, it’s still going on and will probably always go on.”

A Boy Scouts of America spokesman told the LA Times: “The BSA has continued to enhance its youth protection efforts as society has increased its understanding of the dangers children face.”

Three people died and more than 2.3 million homes have lost power as the US East Coast has been hit by an unusual early period snowstorm.

New York City has been hit by more than one inch of snowfall before Halloween for the first time ever – with experts predicting much more on the way.

It was reported that an 84-year-old man from Pennsylvania died when a tree crashed into his house in Temple on Saturday afternoon, while he was having a nap in his recliner chair. He was killed “instantly” according to police.

Another death was in Colchester Connecticut, according to Governor Dannel Malloy who warned that some parts of the state could expect as much as 18 inches of snow.

A third man in his 20s died in Springfield, Massachusetts, after he ignored police warnings and cross a barricade around a downed power line. The man was killed when he touched a metal guard rail that was charged.

October snowstorm killed 3 people and left 2.3 M houses without power on East Coast.

There are reports saying that some places in mid-Atlantic states saw more than half a foot of snow on Saturday and approximately 250,000 customers lost power in Pennsylvania and Maryland, requiring utility crews from Ohio and Kentucky to fix it.

More than 1,000 flights into or out of the United States were cancelled today, with New York particularly affected. JFK airport had around 230 called off by 5:00 p.m. local time.

According to meteorologists, about 60 million people will experience the rare October snowstorm, which should unleash heavy, wet snow and wind, causing fallen tree branches and potential travel chaos.

Halloween weekend looks set to see huge amounts of sleet and snow covering the North East, invariably causing power outages and travel chaos.

In New York City By, 1.3 inches of snow had fallen in Central Park by 2:00 p.m.; never before in October has an inch of snow fallen on a given day in New York City, AccuWeather reported.

AccuWather website reported 10 inches of snow in Ogletown, Pennsylvania, 9.5 inches in Frostburg, Maryland, and 8.5 inches in Lost River, West Virginia.

New York has received measurable snow before Halloween only three times since 1869 – and never more than one inch, as happened today.

The heaviest snow is forecast for later in the day on Sunday in the Massachusetts Berkshires, the Litchfield Hills in northwestern Connecticut, southwestern New Hampshire and the southern Green Mountains.

Chris Vaccaro, a NWS spokesman said:

“It’s going to be wet, sticky and gloppy. It’s not going to be a dry, fluffy snow.”

The snowstorm comes on a busy weekend for many along the Eastern Seaboard, with trick-or-treaters going door-to-door in search of Halloween booty, hunting season opening in some states and a full slate of college and pro football scheduled.

Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy warned residents that they could lose power due to the anticipated wet, heavy snow.

The heaviest snows are expected between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. this evening, although the temperatures could bring light snow throughout the night.

According to meteorologists, the storm is expected to come hard and fast, with the heaviest snow set for the Virginia and West Virginia border through eastern Pennsylvania and southeastern New York state, northwestern New Jersey, northern Connecticut, Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

Six inches of snow has already fallen in New England, where is also expected to be powerful winds which could be very dangerous – bringing down trees and power lines.

Temperatures in the 30s and 40s and wind chills in the 20s will make it feel like winter has truly arrived.

Forecasters at weather.com say the heaviest amounts of snow will fall in parts of Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, upstate New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

“Precipitation will start as rain in these locations, but may change over to snow. How quickly this occurs and how much snow falls is dependent on the availability of enough cold air, which is difficult to forecast early in the season.”

An industrial dispute made the Australian airline Qantas to ground all international and domestic flights with immediate effect.

All employees involved in industrial action would be locked out from Monday evening and flights grounded from 06:00 GMT on Saturday.

With regard to the aircrafts currently in the air, they will complete their flights, but there will be no further departures.

Fair Work Australia, the national industrial tribunal, adjourned a hearing on the Qantas dispute on Saturday night. The tribunal – which has the power to suspend or terminate industrial action – is to reconvene later on Sunday.

It was reported that Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has warned that the dispute could have “implications” for the national economy.

Qantas airline has been hit by a series of costly strikes. Baggage handlers, engineers and pilots have been involved in the action which the company says is costing A$15 million (US$16 million) a week.

Qantas airline issued a statement on its Facebook page saying customers booked on Qantas flights should not go to the airport until further notice. Qantas said a full refund would be available to those affected.

An industrial dispute made the Australian airline Qantas to ground all international and domestic flights with immediate effect

Relations between the unions and Qantas management started deteriorating in August after the airline announced plans for restructuring and moving some operations to Asia.

Qantas airline has a 65% share of the domestic Australian market, but has been making heavy losses on its international flights.

Qantas restructuring is expected to mean the loss of 1,000 jobs from its 35,000-strong workforce.

The disruption to Qantas flights has also affected a meeting of Commonwealth heads of government in Perth, with reports that members from 17 delegations have been stranded in the city because of the dispute.

The dispute comes on a busy travel weekend, just days before the country’s biggest horse race, the Melbourne Cup.

Anthony Albanese, Australian minister for transport said the government would take action to intervene in the dispute.

“We are very concerned about Qantas’ actions, of which we were notified only mid-afternoon, with no advance notice from Qantas at any stage,” Anthony Albanese said.

“The government is making an urgent application to Fair Work Australia to terminate all industrial action at Qantas. This will be aimed at both actions by unions and by Qantas management.”

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce announced the grounding of the airline on Saturday: “The airline will be grounded as long as it takes to reach a conclusion on this.”

Alan Joyce said that he would not take “the easy way out” and agree to union demands.

“That would destroy Qantas in the long term.

“I’m actually taking the bold decision, an unbelievable decision, a very hard decision, to ground this airline.”

Alan Joyce said he made the decision early Saturday and then gained the approval of the Qantas board.

“We are locking out until the unions withdraw their extreme claim and reach an agreement with us,” he said.

“This is the fastest way to ensure the airline gets back in the air.

“They are trashing our strategy and our brand.

“They must decide just how badly they want to hurt Qantas, their members… and the travelling public.”

The Australian pilots association criticized the grounding.

“It’s unprecedented and really it has hijacked the nation. It really has put everyone on notice and… it’s forcing the government’s hand on this,” Barry Jackson of the Australian and International Pilots Association told Sky News.

“We really need to address this sooner rather than later and get the aircraft back in the air.”

Qantas said as of 04:00 GMT on Saturday, there were 64 aircraft in the air – 36 domestic and 28 international – carrying more than 7,000 passengers. In total, 108 aircraft will be grounded in 22 airports around the world.

Qantas also said 13,305 passengers were booked to travel on its planes from overseas airports to Australia in the next 24 hours. About 1,310 international passengers may be at international airports now waiting for their flights to depart.

Five ideas for a last minute Halloween costume that can be picked up at your local thrift store or the back of your closet:

The 99%: Make a sign and wear your grungy clothes to dress up as a political protester. Keep it in the spirit of Halloween by protesting the living or protesting for more candy.

Your Facebook profile: Take a piece of white poster board and decorate it like your Facebook profile. Cut out a window for your “profile picture” and simply hold the board up to your face. Bonus points: cover the poster board with a sheet of lamination film to make a write on-wipe off surface, then tape a dry erase marker to your board so friends can add “updates” to your “page.”

Instant cowboy: If you have jeans, boots and a long sleeve shirt you can dress up as a cowboy. Add a Nerf gun or cap pistol from the toy aisle and you’re ready to rustle up Halloween fun.

Tourist: If you have a Hawaiian shirt, this one is a cinch. Dig in the back of your closet for an old 35mm camera (or two) to hang around your neck. Bonus points: wear a set of mouse ears or other souvenir hat from a past vacation.

Thrift store zombie: Fenton has two thrift stores to search for frightfully cheap Halloween costumes: Value Village and Goodwill. Thrift store clothes are cheap enough that you can tear them up and splatter them with blood, and just throw them away when your spooky evening is over.

A small passenger aircraft crashed on Russ Baker Way, a busy street from Richmond, Canada, injuring all nine aboard, but miraculously all passengers were alive.

The aircraft broke in half and burst into flames as it hit the ground near Vancouver International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

Three people, two of them believed to be crew members, are in critical condition. A person on the ground was also injured in the crash and taken to hospital.

A small passenger aircraft crashed on Russ Baker Way, a busy street from Richmond, Canada, injuring all nine aboard, but miraculously all passengers were alive

The Beech King Air 100 caught fire after it came to rest on a street just 900 meteres from Vancouver International Airport.

Witness Steven Baran told CBC News that the aircraft slammed onto the road and slid into a car before stopping.

Steven Baran, who works for the post office at the airport, said no-one in the car appeared to be hurt and his first instinct was to help the plane passengers.

“The rear door was ajar and one of the fellows pulled it down. One after another, we just pulled passengers out real quick.”

According to Alyssa Polinsky, spokeswoman for Vancouver Coastal Health, three people were taken to Vancouver General Hospital in critical condition, while three more were stable.

Another three people were taken to the nearby Richmond General Hospital with injuries considered to be non-life threatening.

A pedestrian was also sent to hospital after being struck by a flying object. The person’s condition was unknown.

Two people in a car were also reported to have suffered minor injuries.

During an interview, Alyssa Polinsky said:

”We have everything from burns to fractures and back injuries.”

She also said she had no information on any identities.

The aircraft capacity is up to nine passengers.

“The plane’s basically broken in half, as far as I can see,” said Graeme Wallace, who works at a nearby pilot supply store.

Graeme Wallace also said about half of the plane was burning, but emergency crews put out the fire.

The aircraft was operated by British Columbia-based Northern Thunderbird Air and was bound for Kelowna.

According to Bill Yearwood, from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the flight took off at 3:40 p.m. but turned around when the crew got the “indication of a problem” about 15 minutes after take-off.

The plane did not make it back to the airport, crashing on Russ Baker Way in Richmond, about 900 metres short of the runway.

In an audio recording, obtained by CBC News, the pilot can be heard telling air traffic control that he is declaring an emergency and turning back to Vancouver, but is confident he can reach the airfield.

The air traffic controller asks the pilot to confirm whether he “doesn’t need equipment or help” on the runway.

The pilot responds: “Negative, everything’s good here at the moment”.

Visibility was good with clear skies at the time of the crash, according to meteorologists.

Vancouver Airport Authority went into emergency mode at 4:12 p.m. local time.

A new capsule called Swallowable Parfum promises to deliver perfume directly into the body, turning the skin into an “atomizer”.

Swallowable Parfum, which is currently in its development phase, is said to work with the natural processes of metabolism, releasing fragrant molecules through the skin’s surface during perspiration.

The pill creator, a Netherlands-based Australian artist Lucy McCrae claims that Swallowable Parfum can turn perspiration into a fragrance and because we are all genetically unique, our scented sweat will take on an individual characteristic, too.

Swallowable Parfum is a bio-genetic discovery that comes in a capsule and makes your sweat fragrant

Swallowable Parfum is a bio-genetic discovery that comes in a capsule and makes your sweat fragrant

Lucy McRae is an internationally appraised body-architect, inventor and ballerina who has always focused her work on powerful, primal transformations of the human body with surprising, innovative and grotesque results.

Swallowable Parfum is a bio-genetic discovery that comes in a capsule and makes your sweat fragrant. The more you sweat, the more scented you’ll be while you’ll be perspiring a genetically unique fragrance.

Lucy McCrae writes on her site: “Swallowable Parfum is a digestible scented capsule that emits a unique odor through your own perspiration.”

Lucy McCrae is teaming up with synthetic biologist Sheref Mansy and they hope the pill will create a “biologically enhanced second skin synthesized directly from the natural processes of the body”.

Swallowable Parfum is a potential solution to odour issues or simply for those who are too lazy to squirt a spritz of perfume each morning.

Swallowable Parfum pill comes on the heels of a new “perfume candy” that mimicks the staying power of garlic, replacing its antisocial breath odour with something altogether more attractive.

Meanwhile, research is underway for a pill that will provide SPF, negating the need for suncream, and tablets to counteract grey hair are slated to be launched by L’Oreal in 2015.

Swallowable Parfum tablets are still very much on the drawing board, with no product launch date yet planned.

Steven Hayes from Connecticut, who is convicted of killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters in a deadly home invasion, spoke about how he killed 17 others and raped dozens of women in leaked letters revealed yesterday.

Steven Hayes, 48, described in detail how in two of the attacks he had tied up, tortured and killed women – and even made a 16-hour video of him murdering one of his victims.

The serial killer, who is on death row for his role in the 2007 home invasion, boasted to a female companion about how he had collected the sneakers of all of his victims as trophies, but said “the 17 kill trophies” meant the most to him.

Steven Hayes, a Connecticut home invasion triple murderer speaks about killing other 17 women and raping dozens in sickening prison letters

In 2010, Steven Hayes was convicted of raping and strangling Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, before tying her daughters, Hayley, 17 and Michaela, 11, to their beds and setting the house on fire.

Steven Hayes is currently appealing the conviction.

Steven Hayes’ accomplice was Joshua Komisarjevsky, who was also convicted for his role in the killings earlier this month and is due to be sentenced on Tuesday.

Three of Steven Hayes’ victims pictured in a 2007 photo, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, right, and her daughters Michaela, front, Hayley, centre rear

In the four letters revealed yesterday, which were written in August and September, Steven Hayes wrote that he would have killed Joshua Komisarjevsky if he had not been jailed because while he had the same “capacity for evil”, the accomplice was not committed enough.

Steven Hayes told a female in North Carolina, only identified as “Lynn”, that he wanted to share his “dark secret” as “someone else really should know the truth about” him.

In the letters which were obtained by the New Haven Register, Steven Hayes wrote:

“Yes, I’ve killed before.”

“I have 17 kills throughout the Northeast United States. Perfect victims and well executed, controlled endeavors.”

There are 17 pages of handwritten letters, which were confiscated by prison authorities.

Steven Hayes also recounted the rape and murder of his first victim in 1982 and the eighth. The killer wrote that all of his victims were aged between 14 and 25.

According to the New Haven Register, which has not detailed how it acquired the letters, they read “like a twisted pornographic fantasy”.

Steven Hayes wrote that he spotted his first victim, a girl who was hitchhiking, as he was driving home from a bar, describing her as “short, hot and the perfect victim”.

“Like any great hunter, timing is critical,” Steven Hayes wrote about how he chose his victims.

The serial killer told how he picked up the girl and drove her to a secluded location where he tied her up and threw her in the trunk before taking her to a cheap motel, which he said became his “location of choice” for his attacks.

He described in detail how he sexually assaulted the woman and then pinched her nose and suffocated her.

“A monster was born,” Steven Hayes wrote.

“This carried on with my top 17 sexual conquests and kills.”

“The trophies, the signature kill, the thrill of the hunt and the disposal of my adventure buddies.”

He said that he picked up his eighth victim, who he found drunk walking along a road, and told her he would take her back to his house to smoke crack cocaine and drink beer.

Steven Hayes claimed that he tied her to his bed for an entire weekend and tortured her before killing her.

“The more pain and emotional abuse she went through, the better I liked it.”

“And believe me, I was in heaven.”

The serial killer also claimed that he recorded the assault and killing on a 16-hour video, which he described as “by far the best snuff film ever created”.

Steven Hayes said that he kept hold of the tape for six months before it “found a home” in Portland, Oregon.

He described Joshua Komisarjevsky, who could also face the death penalty for his part in the attacks, as being a disappointment to him in the letters.

“I’ve searched my whole life for someone who could embrace and had the capacity for evil as I possess,” Steven Hayes wrote, according to the newspaper. “I thought I finally found it in Josh.”

“But events show Josh, while [he] had the proper evil intent, lacked in the most serious aspects, commitment and control.”

Steven Hayes asked the recipient to hold on to the details of the letters until after his execution because the information “could be worth millions to the right people”.

Michael Dearington, State Attorney and FBI spokesman have declined to say whether Steven Hayes’ purported crimes are being investigated or whether authorities are aware of 17 unsolved homicides matching details in his letters.

An alleged mentally ill 14-year-old boy was kept locked in a filthy room of a mice-infested trailer for three years by his own mother.

Amanda Joliff, the teenager’s mother, who described her son as “developmentally delayed”, only allowed him out to take care of the family’s ducks, to clean and to eat, according to police.

It is reported that the boy ate only about four times a week.

It also appears that authorities missed numerous chances to intervene despite visiting the address numerous times.

Police visited the trailer at least three times since 2007, but, incredibly, failed to notice that anything was wrong.

Amanda Joliff, her boyfriend Richard Smith and the boy’s sister had kept him locked in the room since early 2008, the teenager told police.

According to police, the boy's room was filled with junk and had a soiled mattress with no sheets

According to police, the boy's room was filled with junk and had a soiled mattress with no sheets

The boy was found on September 27, hiding under a neighbour’s porch, while his mother and her boyfriend took a trip to New York.

According to police, the boy’s room was filled with junk and had a soiled mattress with no sheets. The only window was boarded up and there appeared to be a leak in the ceiling.

It appears that mice had eaten through boxes of pasta which were his main source of sustenance.

Two dogs, six birds including two ducks, and four toads lived inside the trailer, and another dog lived outside.

The home reeked of animal urine and faeces, police said.

The child’s mother, Amanda Joliff claimed that the lock on the plywood door to the boy’s room was originally installed because he had once run away.

The boy’s father and sister decided to move out of the trailer on September 27 but told him he would have to wait another day to leave, the teenager said.

His father gave him $5 to find a place to stay and he crawled underneath a neighbour’s porch to sleep, too afraid to ask for help, the boy said.

Police acknowledged Friday that they previously had visited the home but had seen no signs of abuse.

Authorities were first called to the address in February 2007 after the family’s dog bit a boy.

A male child who lived at the home showed up at a bar to listen to country western music in August 2010 after which police took him home.

In 2011, police were again called to the home because neighbors had complained about unlicensed dogs.

Lt Lee Mathis said authorities never entered the home during those visits and didn’t notice anything suspicious.

“If we had any indication of what was going on, we would have taken action,” Lt Mathis said.

Amanda Joliff, 36, and her boyfriend Richard Smith, 31, have been jailed on charges of false imprisonment, child abuse and neglect.

An American diver was killed today by a great white shark in the second fatal shark attack off the coast of Western Australia state in 12 days.

The victim, who has yet to be named, is said to have died from “shocking” injuries after witnesses reported seeing a 10-foot great white shark.

The American man was a 32-year-old U.S. citizen who diving alone off a 25 feet boat near Rottnest Island, which lies a few miles off the coast, when he was taken by the shark.

Nobody realized the man was missing until two people on board the dive boat noticed bubbles emerging from the water, 500 yards north- west of an area known as Little Armstrong Bay.

Thy thought that air had escaped from diver breathing equipment – and a short time later the American’s body rose to the surface with what were said by a local fisherman to be “shocking injuries”.

An American diver was killed today by a great white shark in the second fatal shark attack off the coast of Western Australia state in 12 days

The great white shark struck 500 yards north of Rottnest Island, which is 11 miles from a popular Perth city mainland beach where a 64-year-old swimmer is believed to have been taken by a great white on October 10.

Last night, local police was interviewing witnesses so a report can be prepared for the coroner.

It is understood the American citizen was on a work visa and had been living near the coast, at North Beach.

Greg Trew, Water Police Senior Sergeant said the American had surfaced in “a flurry of bubbles” with horrific injuries, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The American diver was believed to be dead when hauled aboard by his two companions.

Sergeant Greg Trew said the shark was seen by the man’s two companions as they were leaving the area after retrieving his body.

“It’s traumatic for everyone involved, it’s a tragic situation,” the sergeant said.

Authorities were trying to contact his family and have closed off the beaches on the popular resort island.

Officials cannot say whether the man was killed by the same shark that is believed to have taken Bryn Martin as he made his regular morning swim from Perth’s premier Cottesloe Beach toward a buoy about 380 yards offshore.

An analysis of Bryn Martin’s torn swimming trunks recovered from the seabed near the buoy pointed to a great white shark being the culprit. No other trace of Bryn Martin has been found.

Western Australia Police Sergeant Gerry Cassidy said:

“It’s a cloudy old day today which is the same as we had the other day with Cottesloe, and they’re the conditions that sharks love.”

The unnamed American is the fourth person to be killed by a shark off the Western Australian coast in 14 months.

Great white sharks can grow to more than 20 feet in length and 5,000 pounds in weight. They are protected in Australia, a primary location for the species.

Gordon and Norma Yeager from Iowa, who had been married for 72 years, had only one hour separation between them in their passing.

Gordon, 94, and Norma Yeager, 90, had never been separated, even after their tragic car accident which sent them both to the hospital.

Gordon and Norma were both born in Iowa before he moved to a farm a Minnesota with his family. He later came back in the town, when he was 16, to work at the Chevrolet Garage in State Center, Iowa, a business which he would eventually go on to own.

Once back in the town, Gordon Yeager fell in love with Norma who was still studying at high school.

After his proposal, Gordon and Norma were married on the very day that she graduated, May 26, 1939.

They had a small wedding in the same evening held in the home of Gordon’s sister, the expense of which was covered by his first pay cheque.

Gordon and Norma Yeager spent their first few years of marriage in California where he worked as a welder in the shipyards during the Second World War while volunteering at night for the war effort.

The newlyweds later returned to the town of State Center and had four children – Donna, born in 1940, Roger in 1943, Gordon in 1946 and the youngest Dennis in 1949.

Tragically both middle sons Roger and Gordon later died in car crashes.

Gordon and Norma Yeager first ran a hardware store before taking over the Chevrolet Garage with Gordon’s brother Roger until both men retired at 65.

Their youngest son, Dennis, 62, described his parents as incredibly active individuals.

“We took family camping trips in Iowa and Canada but spent most of the time at Clear Lake, Minnesota. We rented a cabin and went boating.

“I remember my Dad, even at almost 60 years old, water-skiing at Clear Lake. One time, when I was driving the boat he disappeared under for such a long time, that my Mom was worried sick.

“When he eventually surfaced, she screamed at him, <<what were you doing down there?>> to which he yelled back, <<well I wasn’t coming back up without my trunks!>>”

When they retired, Gordon and Norma Yeager spent half the year in Tucson, Arizona, enjoying the outdoors and fishing in the Hoover Dam.

Despite their closeness, Dennis admits at times his parents were “total opposites”.

“They just loved being together but of course they would get mad at each other.

“My Dad was very sociable, he loved doing anything that involved being with people. My Mom was quieter but she would support my Dad in whatever he was doing. She would be there making sure everyone had something to eat, had a drink in their hand.

“She was such a perfectionist. When they had the garage, she won every award going from Chevrolet for her book-keeping. I remember they would be up together poring over those books until 2:00 a.m. if there was even a penny out of place.”

Gordon and Norma Yeager had been married for 72 years and had only one hour separation between them in their passing

After Gordon and Norma Yeager celebrated the rare achievement of a 70th wedding anniversary, they loved to spend time watching sports, socializing and walking their little Yorkie dog Radar.

Last week, while making a trip into town, the car Gordon Yeager was driving mistakenly pulled out in front of another.

According to the police report, the oncoming driver tried to avoid the collision, but it wasn’t able to stop in time.

Dennis Yeager said he found his parents at hospital sharing a unit in the intensive care unit, never separated and holding hands they lay, though “not really responsive”.

In the same day, on October 12, at 3:38pm, Gordon Yeager passed away, with Norma and family beside him. The anomaly began though for the family, when Gordon’s heart monitor kept beeping.

Dennis Yeager recalled: “It was really strange. They were holding hands, and dad stopped breathing but I couldn’t figure out what was going on because the heart monitor was still going.”

“But we were like, he isn’t breathing. How does he still have a heart beat?’

Their son asked a nurse who checked, pointing out the couple’s hands which were still locked together.

“Her heart was beating through him and picking it up,” the nurse explained.

One hour later, at 4:48pm, Norma Yeager died too.

Gordon and Norma Yeager held hands at their funeral on October 18, sharing the same casket. Their family said after Gordon and Norma Yeager are cremated and their ashes will be mixed together.

Gordon and Norma Yeager are survived by Norma’s sister, Virginia Kell, and Gordon’s brother, Roger, along with their children Donna and Dennis as well as 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Authorities in Nuku Hiva Island believe that teeth found in a camp fire match those of Stefan Ramin, the German tourist feared to be eaten by a cannibal in French Polynesia.

Despite DNA tests that will take weeks to complete, a dental file sent from Germany to Papeete, French Polynesia capital, where the charred bones were sent for analysis, shows the remains to be positively identified as of Stefan Ramin.

According to German media, the local investigators are now certain guide Henri Haiti, 31, killed, dismembered and ate Stefan Ramin.

German newspaper Bild wrote: “It is the suspicion of the authorities that the hunter carved his victim up, ate parts of the body and burned the remainder along with animals cadavers. He is regarded as a cannibal.”

Jose Thorel, prosecutor on Polynesian island Nuku Hiva, said: “It is almost certain the remains we found in the fire are those of Stefan Ramin.”

Local authorities have intensified the hunt for Henri Haiti on the island of Nuku Hiva. But the guide knowledge of the bushland, where authorities say he led Stefan Ramin, is unparalleled, giving Haiti a huge advantage over his pursuers.

Further examination of the site where Stefan Ramin’s remains were discovered showed how fierce the fire was that consumed him.

Leaves 25feet up show evidence of scorch marks and ash, clothes, teeth and bone fragments were found over a 35 foot radius.

Today it was confirmed the BKA (the German bureau of investigation) is now involved with French authorities in the hunt for Stefan Ramin’s killer.

Stefan Ramin, 40, from Haselau, north-west Germany was on a round-the-world trip with his girlfriend Heike Dorsch, 37, when they anchored off Nuku Hiva on September 16.

According to his girlfriend, Heike Dorsche, Stefan Ramin went off on a goat hunt with Henri Haiti – a guide registered with authorities on the island – and never returned.

Police say Henri Haiti went back to the boat to try to lure Heike Dorsch into the jungle claiming he had had an accident. Heike Dorsch was suspicious and refused to go with the guide.

Henri Haiti ended up sexually assaulting Heike Dorsch and tying her to a tree.

On Wednesday last week human remains were found in a camp fire. Among the embers were bones including a jaw bone, teeth and melted metal, believed to be fillings.

Stefan Ramin, a fanatical sailor, was a former business adviser and he kept a regular blog of his trip begun in 2008 and one of his last entries read: “I seek freedom and adventures”.

Stefan Ramin bought his catamaran Baju in Turkey and had planned to spend the next two years island hopping in the South Pacific.

Deputy Mayor of Nuku Hiva, Deborah Kimitete told local news website Les Nouvelles: “No one can believe what has happened. This has never happened here before, this is the first time, it’s horrible.”

San Diego police has arrested at least two people and used pepper spray yesterday to break up a human chain formed by Occupy movement protesters at a downtown plaza where they’ve camped for a week.

The action started Friday early in the morning, when police began removing about a half-dozen tents after warning protesters their personal belongings couldn’t stay in the Occupy San Diego camp. However, Occupy demonstrators can continue protesting without the tents, tarps and tables, according to authorities.

According to police Lt. Andra Brown, one man was arrested before 8 a.m. for interfering with a police officer after he sat down and refused to take away his tent. After the man and his tent were removed, other protesters erected another tent and formed a human chain around it.

By noon, police officers pulled apart Occupy demonstrators and used pepper spray to disperse them.

According to demonstrators, several protesters were suffering burning eyes from the pepper spray.

One of the protesters, Michael Basillas, a 26-year-old college student, said they were regrouping to make a new plan and many of them had moved to Balboa Park.

Michael Basillas said San Diego Police refused to negotiate with the Occupy protests organizers about the removal orders.

Police said they met with the Occupy protests organizers on Thursday night to tell them they would need to remove their tents to allow the city to prepare for a weekend event at the civic center plaza.

“They chose just to force their way in,” student Michael Basillas said.

On Friday night, Officer David Stafford said that Occupy San Diego protesters remain on the scene, and police officers are there to monitor the situation.

Occupy San Diego protest is in sympathy with Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in New York and other cities to protest corporate influence on politics.

The gunfire happened Wednesday afternoon, the day after Scott Dekraai is said to have been served a restraining order by former wife Michelle Fournier after she won custody of their son Dominic.

Michelle Fournier, who claimed in court filings that Scott Dekraai was unstable and physically abusive to her when they were married, was murdered, along with salon owner Randy Fannin, newlywed Laura Elody and Michele Fast, a young mother to two teenage daughters.

Another man, David Caouette, was killed outside Salon Meritage by a shot to the head as he sat in his Land Rover.

After the terrifying shooting at Salon Meritage, Orange County authorities rushed to the scene and seized Scott Dekraai in a traffic stop half a mile away.

Scott Dekraai is said to have moved to Seal Beach in 2009, after he was honourably discharged from the military because of a work-related leg injury.

The gunman worked on tugboats after being discharged by the military and walked with a limp after a boat accident.

Scott Dekraai allegedly remarried Mindy Miguel, his rehab nurse, who is currently assisting detectives with their investigations.

Helen Tamaki is the second person who died from injuries suffered in the crash of a helicopter that plunged into the East River off of Midtown Manhattan with five people onboard last Tuesday.

On October 4, Sonia Marra had organized the doomed flight over Manhattan’s skyline to celebrate her 40th birthday with her parents, who now live in Portugal, and her partner, Helen Tamaki.

Helen Tamaki, 43, who lived in Australia, had been hospitalized in critical condition since being pulled from the water unconscious minutes after the helicopter crashed just after liftoff.

Sonia Marra, the British tourist who was celebrating her 40th birthday, was trapped in the helicopter when it sank and she died at the scene.

Helen Tamaki died one week later, on Tuesday evening, according to officials at New York’s Bellevue Hospital.

Harriet Nicholson, Sonia Marra’s mother, remains hospitalized, according to local media reports; Sonia Marra’s stepfather, Paul Nicholson and Paul Dudley, the helicopter pilot, who is a family friend, escaped with minor injuries.

The pilot was treated at the scene.

Eyewitnesses said the helicopter was not equipped with floats and was upside down in the water as rescuers arrived.

The cause of the helicopter crash remains under investigation.

According to eye-witnesses, the chopper spun wildly and barely got off the ground before landing upside-down in the river off a helipad on the river’s edge, on East 34th Street in Manhattan.

The veteran pilot, Paul Dudley, has told the National Transportation Safety Board that the helicopter’s nose swung to the left as he lifted off and that he was unable to regain control as he tried to steer the aircraft back to the heliport.

According to the investigators’ preliminary report, the Bell 206 helicopter had just undergone an annual inspection, during which mechanics disassemble much of the aircraft to check for rust and corrosion. A final report is expected within months.

A $45 million Atlanta mansion – Forsyth County estate Le Rêve – was foreclosed and then sold at a massive 75% drop at only $11.5 million.

Forsyth County estate Le Rêve (“The Dream” in French) was foreclosed at the end of 2010 after taking three years to build with no expense spared by Hubert and Norma Humphrey.

The impressive mansion, which has its own private 18-hole golf course, now has a new owner, who bought it for almost $34million less than the asking price.

WSBTV reported Le Rêve (The Dream) estate features seven bedrooms, nine full baths, 11 half baths, ten fireplaces and two elevators.

The $45 million Atlanta mansion - Forsyth County estate Le Rêve - was foreclosed and then sold at only $11.5 million

The $45 million Atlanta mansion - Forsyth County estate Le Rêve - was foreclosed and then sold at only $11.5 million

Besides the private 18-hole golf course, the expensive mansion features other sports courts, stables, a camping area, bowling alley, home theatre, fifties diner, an exercise facility, a massage room and a pool. Le Rêve property is gated and entirely monitored by security cameras.

Troy Stowe, a real estate agent described the property:

“One of the largest challenges of selling Le Rêve was it sat on 72 acres, it was 47,000 square feet and just trying to find someone (who) wants to take on (what) I kind of call the big dragon.

“If you’re not used to maintaining and caring for a property like that, it is a challenge.

“I was told that in that one room, there are 27 seats and there was over $1 million spent in the home theatre.”

Immediately after foreclosure, the mansion was originally listed for $45 million. Then the bank took possession of the property and its price was dropped to $28 million. The Forsyth County estate Le Rêve price was dropped down to $16 million before the $11.5 million offer was accepted.

Troy Stowe said: “Ultimately, if you get a $50 million house for $11.5 (million), at some point, when the money lined properly with what the property offers, (a buyer) just came onboard.”

According to Zillow, the online real estate database, Hubert Humphrey started life as a railroad brakeman and conductor who later enjoyed entrepreneurial success.

Hubert Humphrey sold insurance for A.L. Williams, where he earned record sales, then launched his own company, Humphrey Worldwide Network, before selling it to Primerica, which is now part of CitiGroup.

The entrepreneur then formed World Marketing Alliance, followed by the World Leadership Group, a marketing, financial services and mortgage company based in Atlanta.

Hubert Humphrey started building Le Rêve mansion in 2005 on the 72-acre property.

Asked about the identity of the new Le Rêve owner, Troy Stowe said he cannot give anything away:

“Everybody wants to know who bought it. And I did sign a confidentiality agreement, but I just tell them it’s normal folks, husband and wife living at the property.”

A terror plot of the Iranian government to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. in Washington has been revealed to press yesterday.

Attorney General Eric Holder spoke during a press conference of how elements of the Iranian government financed and aided the plot to murder Adel al-Jubeir , the Saudi ambassador in US- offering a bounty of $1.5 million to the plotters.

Two persons have been charged with the plot, according to the authorities; Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old U.S. citizen who also holds an Iranian passport and Gholam Shakuri, whom it said to be a member of the Iranian regime’s hard core “Quds Force”.

It was reported that when asked by undercover agents about the potential loss of innocent life in the bombings, Manssor Arbabsiar replied:

“They want that guy [al-Jubeir] done.

“If the hundred go with him, f**k ’em.”

Saudi ambassador in US, Adel al-Jubeir was the target of the Iranian plot

Saudi ambassador in US, Adel al-Jubeir was the target of the Iranian plot

Attorney General Eric Holder said: “The criminal complaint unsealed today exposes a deadly plot directed by factions of the Iranian government to assassinate a foreign Ambassador on U.S. soil with explosives.

“Through the diligent and coordinated efforts of our law enforcement and intelligence agencies, we were able to disrupt this plot before anyone was harmed.

“We will continue to investigate this matter vigorously and bring those who have violated any laws to justice.”

According to US Justice Department, from the spring of 2011 to October 2011, Manssor Arbabsiar and his Iran-based co-conspirators, including Shakuri of the Quds Force, had been plotting the murder of the Saudi Ambassador.

Manssor Arbabsiar was said to have unknowingly hired informant from the Drug Enforcement Administration to carry out the plot.

The informant [CS-1], who was posing as a member of a Mexican drug cartel, met with Manssor Arbabsiar several times in Mexico.

Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old U.S. citizen who also holds an Iranian passport, has been charged with the Saudi ambassador assassination plot

Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old U.S. citizen who also holds an Iranian passport, has been charged with the Saudi ambassador assassination plot

Manssor Arbabsiar was said to have first met with CS-1 in Mexico on May 24, 2011, inquiring informant’s knowledge of explosives before explaining that he was interested in, among other things, attacking an embassy of Saudi Arabia.

According to the charges, CS-1 allegedly indicated he had knowledge of using C-4 explosives.

Manssor Arbabsiar has returned to Mexico in June and July 2011 where he held additional meetings with CS-1.

In a July 14, 2011, they had another meeting in Mexico and CS-1 allegedly told Manssor Arbabsiar that he would need to use four men to carry out the Ambassador’s murder and that his price for carrying out the murder was $1.5 million.

Manssor Arbabsiar then offered a $100,000 down payment and during the same meeting, he boasted to CS-1 his cousin in Iran – a “big general” in the Iranian military, as Arbabsiar said – had knowledge of the attack.

In July 17, Manssor Arbabsiar and CS-1 met again, with the informant saying one of his men had already carried out surveillance of the ambassador.

On August 1, and August 9, 2011, with Gholam Shakuri’s approval, Manssor Arbabsiar allegedly made two overseas wire transfers “totalling approximately $100,000” that prosecutors say were sent to an FBI undercover account.

After the informant then demanded a further down payment, Manssor Arbabsiar flew to Mexico to act as a guarantee the fee would be paid.

After being refused entry to Mexico on September 28, Arbabsiar was returned to New York’s JFK airport, where he was arrested by federal agents on September 29.

Iran’s secretive Quds Force is an elite brigade within Iran’s revolutionary Guard.

The Guards, with their own navy, air force and command structure separate from the regular armed forces, are seen as fiercely loyal to the supreme leader.

Within the Guards, Quds are tasked with “exporting” the Iranian revolution abroad.

The Quds Force, which is said to contain 15,000 troops, is accused of operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, North Africa and now North America.

In the past, the U.S. has accused Quds of arming Iraqi militants with deadly bomb-making material, building up an extensive network in the war-torn country, recruiting Iraqis and supporting not only Shiite militias but also Shiites allied with Washington.

Last night, David Arquette, 40, and partner Kym Johnson also danced the Paso Doble, but they chose to do so to the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme song.

David Arquette and Kym Johnson scored a 23 for the dramatic dance. In true Indiana Jones style, David Arquette swung onto the dance floor on a rope.

David Arquette’ seven-year-old daughter, Coco, ex-wife Courteney Cox, and his sister Patricia were all in the audience to cheer him on.

Carson Kressley, the fashion expert, was a fan favourite with his hilarious pirate costume and sword fighting dance-off, but the judges had issues with his performance.

Carson Kressley, 41, and partner Anna Trebunskaya danced the Viennese Waltz from Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.

Judge Len Goodman said about their performance:

“Like childbirth – terrible while it’s happening, and a joy when it’s over. No quality of movement…but it was great fun. If I was at home, I’d be phoning for you.”

DWTS insiders said that Ricki Lake and partner Derek Hough are the team to beat, but the 43-year-old talk show host doesn’t agree.

She seemed to have problems in rehearsals, saying that she felt a ‘tremendous amount of pressure’ and expressing her desire to quit.

When Ricki and Derek danced to the theme song from Psycho, they received a standing ovation and scored 29, the highest score of the night.

A Nancy Shevell’s black-and-white photograph surfaced today, few days after the new Lady McCartney married Sir Paul in central London, and shows her aged just 17.

It appears also that Nancy Shevell have had her teeth straightened and possibly veneered, giving her the smile she has today.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” read a statement by Apple’s board of directors.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

The homepage of Apple’s website this evening switched to a full-page image of Jobs with the text, “Steve Jobs 1955-2011”.

Clicking on the image revealed the additional text:

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being.

“Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor.

“Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Steve Jobs leaves a wife, a son and two daughters.

Steve Jobs’ relatives also released a statement, which said he “died peacefully today, surrounded by his family”.

“In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the news of Steve Jobs’s death to Apple employees via e-mail:

“I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

“We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon.

“No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.”

Within minutes of his death being confirmed, tributes to Steve Jobs began flooding the web, led by President Barack Obama, who tweeted:

“Rest in peace, Steve Jobs. From all of us at #Obama2012, thank you for the work you make possible every day – including ours.”

Barack Obama later gave a fuller statement, in which he praised Steve Jobs as a “visionary” who was “bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it”.

“The world has lost a visionary,” Obama said.

“And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.

“Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

“Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.”

From its earliest beginnings as a personal computer also-ran in a scrappy garage in northern California to its all-conquering development of life-changing gadgets the rise of Apple has been intrinsically linked to Steve Jobs.

When Steve Jobs left for eleven years after a row over the company’s direction, Apple’s fortunes dipped.

His return, after a successful stint as head of animation innovators Pixar, marked the start of the company’s relentless drive to become one of America’s biggest and most successful companies.

Steve Jobs’ death comes just six weeks after his poor health led him to stand down as the company’s CEO and his successor, Tim Cook, presented the new generation iPhone yesterday.

The fact that Apple stayed cool as it grew is credited to Steve Jobs’ innovative marketing techniques almost as much as his visionary wizardry.

Even when he announced that he was taking two years off on medical leave, Steve Jobs still kept hold of his CEO title, just as he did on two previous occasions in the past seven years when he needed to take leave from the day-to-day running of the company for health reasons.

At the time, Steve Jobs could barely walk and photographs of him looking gaunt and frail led to reports that he just had weeks to live.

But Steve Jobs fought back and appeared to be relishing proving the doubters wrong by introducing the second-generation iPad and meeting up with President Obama to discuss the future of the tech industry.

Other than his well-rehearsed stage appearances to launch the latest Apple innovation, Steve Jobs always treasured his privacy.

Steve Jobs survived surgery to remove a cancerous pancreatic tumor in 2004 and a liver transplant in 2009.

As CEO, Steve Jobs earned only $1 a year, but he held 5,426 million Apple shares as well as 138 million shares in Disney.

Steve Jobs’ wealth is estimated at more than $5billion.

With his trademark jeans and casual jumper, Steve Jobs became synonymous with the company’s every innovation in recent years, from the iPod through to the iPhone and iPad.

Born in San Francisco, Steve Jobs, who was adopted, dropped out of university after one term and only took his first computer job to raise money to go on a spiritual retreat to India.

Steve Jobs returned a Buddhist with his head shaved and admitted experimenting with LSD, calling his drug-induced experiences ‘one of the two or three most important things’ he had done in his life.

Back in northern California, Steve Jobs started working for computer firm Atari before founding Apple in his garage in 1976 with friends Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne and Mike Makkula.

After a power struggle in 1985, Steve Jobs left the company, only to return eleven years later to launch the company’s extraordinary growth over the past fourteen years.

One of the world’s most famous CEOs, Steve Jobs remained stubbornly private about his personal life, refusing interviews and shielding his wife and their children from public view.

Even when he resigned six weeks ago, he divulged very little, not directly mentioning his cancer as the reason he quit.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” Steve Jobs wrote in his letter of resignation.

“Unfortunately, that day has come.”

But that personal life – he was given up at birth for adoption, had an illegitimate child, was romantically linked with movie stars – was full of intrigue for his fan base and Apple consumers.

Steve Jobs admitted that when he was 23, he had a child out of wedlock with his high school girlfriend, Chris Ann Brennan. Their daughter, Lisa Brennan Jobs, was born in 1978.

Sonia Marra, a British tourist has died in a horrific helicopter crash when the aircraft she was flying in plummeted into New York’s East River seconds after take-off.

Three other British persons were fighting for their lives after the chopper spun out of control and plunged into the river.

The injured British passengers were Paul Nicholson, believed to be her stepfather, and his wife Harriet and Sonia Marra’s partner Helen Tamaki.

Sonia Marra had organized the doomed flight over Manhattan’s skyline to celebrate her 40th birthday with her parents, who now live in Portugal.

The Foreign Office said: “We can confirm that three British nationals were involved in the helicopter crash in New York City.

“One of them has died in the crash and the next of kin have been informed. We are providing consular assistance.”

The fourth passenger is thought to be Helen Tamaki, Sonia Marra’s partner, thought to be from New Zealand.

According to the New York Daily News website, Harriet Nicholson and Helen Tamaki are both in a critical condition at the city’s Bellevue Hospital, while Paul Nicholson is being treated at New York University Medical Center.

Five people were on board the Bell 206 Jet Ranger tourist helicopter – and two survivors could be seen clinging onto the craft as they were rescued.

Sonia Marra was celebrating her 40th birthday with her parents, reported ABC News.

The pilot of the helicopter is also believed to be a family friend.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called Prime Minister David Cameron to tell him about the tragedy.

“We have a family who’ve come here to see the best of our city and to end up in a tragic accident like this just breaks our heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said last night.

“From what we know so far, the pilot reported having trouble keeping aloft, tried to turn back, but crashed in the water just north of the landing pad,” he added.

Joe Galluzzo, who runs a fruit market in Glebe, Sydney, said Sonia Marra had worked there for the last three months.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald Sonia Marra’s friend had surprised her with plans to go to New York.

“That was her 40th birthday present from Helen. How said that is.

“She just had that kind of a personality… people just gravitated towards her. She was a really lovely person.”

“Four of them were outside the helicopter when rescuers got to them, one was trapped inside. We did get the body out.”

One of the five people rescued was the veteran pilot, called Paul Dudley.

The pilot was treated at the scene. His helicopter was not equipped with floats and was upside down in the water as rescuers arrived.

Joy Garnett and her husband were on the dock waiting to take the East River ferry to Brooklyn when they heard the blades of a helicopter and saw it start to take off from the nearby helipad. She said she saw it do “a funny curlicue”.

Joy Garnett said: “I thought, <<Is that some daredevil move?>>. But it was obviously out of control. The body spun around at least two or three times, and then it went down.”

Joy Garnett said also the chopper had lifted about 25 feet off the ground before it dropped into the water without much of a splash.

The helicopter flipped over, and the blades were sticking up out of the river. She said people on the dock started throwing in life jackets and buoys. Two people came up out of the waves.

Joy Garnett added: “It didn’t make much noise. It was just a splash and sunk.”

Scuba divers, police and fire units were all deployed in the area, where local media reported the water temperature as around 66F.

At least seven boats were involved in the East River rescue effort and ladders were used to pull survivors out of the cold water.

Later Tuesday, crews were able to hoist the helicopter out of the river.

It had reportedly just taken off from the East 34th Street heliport in Manhattan when it hit the water.

“The water is not too cold, but even 60 degrees can be dangerous,” coast guard spokesman Erik Swanson told the New York Post.

The helicopter was registered N63Q, and was reportedly owned by Paul Dudley, 56, who is also the director of Linden Airport in New Jersey.

The helicopter was built in 1976 and formerly operated as a “news chopper”.

Paul Dudley, a married father-of-three and an experienced pilot who has flown helicopters for more than 20 years, remained at the scene while the other passengers were rescued.

Paul Dudley, who has been quoted on helicopter security in the past, had to land a Cessna 172 in a park in Brooklyn, New York, five years ago.

The chopper, a Bell 206 Jet Ranger, is one of the world’s most popular helicopter models and was first flown in January 1966.

In August 2009, a small plane collided with a helicopter over the Hudson River, west of Manhattan, killing nine people, including five Italian tourists.

A government safety panel found that an air traffic controller who was on a personal phone call had contributed to the accident.

The Federal Aviation Administration changed its rules for aircraft flying over New York City’s rivers after that collision.

Pilots must call out their positions on the radio and obey a 161mph speed limit. Before the changes, such radio calls were optional.

Earlier that year, an Airbus 320 airliner landed in the Hudson after hitting birds and losing both engines after taking off from LaGuardia Airport.

The flight, U.S. Airways Flight 1549, became known as the “Miracle on the Hudson” plane.
