Xi Jinping confirmed as China’s leader for next decade

Xi Jinping has been confirmed as China’s leader for the next decade.

Xi Jinping led the new Politburo Standing Committee onto the stage at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, signaling his elevation to the top of China’s ruling Communist Party.

The party faced great challenges, he said, but would work meet “expectations of both history and the people”.

Most of the new committee are seen as politically conservative, and perceived reformers did not get promotion.

Xi Jinping replaces Hu Jintao, under whose administration China has seen a decade of extraordinary growth.

The move marks the official passing of power from one generation to the next.

Xi Jinping was followed out onto the stage by Li Keqiang, the man set to succeed Premier Wen Jiabao, and five other men – meaning that the size of the all-powerful Standing Committee had been reduced from nine to seven.

Those five, in order of seniority, were Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang, Shanghai party boss Yu Zhengsheng, propaganda chief Liu Yunshan, Vice-Premier Wang Qishan and Tianjin party boss Zhang Gaoli.

The new leaders had great responsibilities, Xi Jinping said, but their mission was to be united, and to lead the party and the people to make the Chinese nation stronger and more powerful.

“The people’s desire for a better life is what we shall fight for,” he said.

Corruption had to be addressed, he said, and better party discipline was needed.

“The party faces many severe challenges, and there are also many pressing problems within the party that need to be resolved, particularly corruption, being divorced from the people, going through formalities and bureaucratism caused by some party officials,” Xi Jinping said.

“We must make every effort to solve these problems. The whole party must stay on full alert.”

The new Standing Committee was endorsed in a vote early on Thursday by the new party Central Committee, but in reality the decisions had been made in advance.

The new leaders will gradually take over in the next few months, with Hu Jintao’s presidency formally coming to an end at the annual parliament session in March 2013.

Xi Jinping has also been named chairman of the Central Military Commission, a Xinhua news agency report said, ending uncertainty over whether that post would be transferred from Hu Jintao immediately.

Hu Jintao’s predecessor, Jiang Zemin, held on to the post for two years after he stood down from the party leadership.

New Standing Committee member Wang Qishan has also been named head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection – the party’s anti-corruption watchdog.

Xi Jinping, a former Shanghai party chief, was appointed to the politburo in 2007.

A “princeling” – a relative of one of China’s revolutionary elders – he has spent almost four decades in the Communist Party, serving in top posts in both Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, as well as Shanghai.

His speech drew praise online, with a number of netizens liking his more informal style.

“This big boss at least is talking like a human being. I won’t comment on the rest,” well-known Chinese journalist Gong Xiaoyue said via micro-blog.

Xi Jinping, 59, is said to be a protégé of Jiang Zemin, while Li Keqiang is said to have been Hu Jintao’s preferred successor.

Hu Jintao has been the Communist Party chief since he led the Standing Committee line-up out on stage in November 2002.

Under his administration China has seen a decade of rapid development, overtaking Japan as the world’s second-largest economy.

But the development has been uneven, leading to a widening wealth gap, environmental challenges and rumbling social discontent over inequality and corruption.

Analysts say there has been division at the very top of the leadership in the lead-up to the party congress, with two rival factions jostling for position and influence.

The transition process has also been complicated by the scandal that engulfed Chongqing party leader Bo Xilai – a powerful high-flier once seen as a strong contender for the top leadership. His wife has been jailed for murdering a British businessman and he looks set to face trial on a raft of corruption-related charges.

That notwithstanding, the power transition process has been orderly, for only the second time in 60 years of Communist Party rule.

“The ostensible lack of drama throughout the week-long session may disappoint sensation seekers,” China Daily said in an editorial on Thursday before the new Standing Committee line-up was announced.

“But the confidence in continuity, instead of revolutionary ideas and dramatic approaches, means a better tomorrow is attainable.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal Sweden vs. England: The Greatest Goal Ever

Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic last night scored the “greatest goal ever” to round off a crushing victory over England in the first match at his national stadium.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s remarkable overhead kick came when he was 30 yards from goal. He sprang six feet into the air to arch the ball over the helpless goalkeeper and into the net.

The world’s biggest football names are already queuing up to praise the goal, with even England’s gobsmacked stars hailing his achievement as “extraordinary” and “world class”.

England captain Steven Gerrard, playing his 100th match for his country, said: “It is the best goal I have seen live.

“The best goal I’d seen before that was Wayne Rooney’s against Manchester City.

“Everyone knows how special that was, but this one – an overhead kick from 30 yards when the ball is six feet in the air – only certain players can do that. And he is a special player.

“This was a world-class performance from a world-class player.”

Zlatan Ibrahamivic’s goal was his fourth of the match, taking the score to 4-2 to round off the first game at Friends Arena in Stockholm.

The propeller kick came after goalkeeper Joe Hart had come out of his area to head the ball clear.

Silence fell as those inside the arena held their breath and watched the flight of the ball. Then the noise exploded as it landed in the net.

Even England supporters stood to applaud the audacity of Sweden’s captain, thrilled to witness such a brilliant flash of sporting beauty.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic ripped off his shirt, tossed it towards the crowd and shrugged as he was shown a yellow card.

Asked to rate his international career out of 10, Zlatan Ibrahimovic replied: “Ten. When I saw the goalkeeper was out of his net, I tried to put it over him. It was a good try, and when it comes off it’s fantastic.”

Former England manager Graham Taylor said: “That’s the greatest goal I’ve ever seen.”

England manager Roy Hodgson, who suffered his first defeat over 90 minutes, said: “Ibrahimovic’s fourth goal was extraordinary and it put the tin lid on the game. It was a fantastic goal.

“But it was the second and third goals which killed us.

“For 60-70 minutes we played very well and deserved to be leading. There are lots of reasons to be optimistic.”

Sweden substitute Tobias Sana said: “It was Zlatan against children. He has been criticized in England and this proves them all wrong.”

The Sweden player became the first footballer to hit four in a match against England.

No-one had even scored a hat-trick against England since Marco van Basten in 1988.

The two England goals came after Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring in the 20th minute, with Danny Welbeck and Steven Caulker taking the national side to a half-time lead.

The excitement was abruptly cut off in the last 14 minutes, however, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored three more and went down in history.

Barack Obama reiterates that US wealthiest must pay more tax at his first press conference

President Barack Obama has reiterated his call for high earners in the US to pay more in taxes, in his first news conference since winning re-election.

Barack Obama called for quick legislation to rule out tax rises on the first $250,000 of income, but refused to extend cuts for the wealthiest 2%.

“We should not hold the middle class hostage while we debate tax cuts for the wealthy,” he said.

The US faces an end-of-year “fiscal cliff” of spending cuts and tax rises.

The fiscal cliff would see the George W. Bush-era tax cuts expire in combination with automatic, across-the-board reductions to military and domestic spending.

Some $607 billion of savings and tax rises are planned, including reductions in the defence budget, the end of an employee tax holiday, changes to Medicare allowances and higher personal taxes.

The lower paid are set to lose some child and income credits, but Barack Obama has made fewer references to other portions of the stimulus deal set to expire beyond the tax cuts.

The fiscal cliff is due to take effect because Congress failed to reach a deal on deficit reduction after a stand-off over the US debt ceiling in mid-2011.

Congressional Republicans have said since last week’s US elections that they are open to raising revenue through tax reform and closure of loopholes, but oppose tax rises on the wealthy.

Glenn Hubbard, an economic adviser to Republican Mitt Romney’s failed presidential bid, writing in the Financial Times, called on fellow Republicans to accept the need for the rich to pay more tax, albeit through closing loopholes such as tax deductions.

Other Republicans favor ending the right of Americans to deduct mortgage interest payments from their taxable income – something analysts say is likely to hurt the middle classes far more than top earners.

During his news conference on Wednesday, Barack Obama was dismissive of a loophole-only reform, telling reporters that “the math tends not to work” in helping to cut the deficit.

“It really is arithmetic, not calculus,” he said.

The president has long opposed extending the Bush-era tax cuts for earnings above $250,000 a year, but gave into Republican demands in 2010 when the cuts were last up for renewal.

On Wednesday, Barack Obama said that would not happen this time.

“A modest tax increase on the wealthy is not going to break their backs,” he said.

“They’ll still be wealthy.”

But the president said he was confident that the White House and Congress could reach a deal before 1 January to avoid the “fiscal cliff”, as the US economy could not afford it coming to pass.

Barack Obama suggested the immediate extension of all the expiring tax cuts except the top rate, followed by a more comprehensive reform of the tax code as well as some of the US’ largest benefits programmes, including Social Security in 2013.

In doing so, he distanced himself from some in his own party who want the combined tax rises and cuts to happen, in order to give Barack Obama a better negotiating position.

On Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned against extending all of the tax breaks that are due to expire in January as a way of giving Washington more time to broker a deal on the deficit.

Timothy Geithner claimed doing this would create more uncertainty in the financial markets.

House Speaker John Boehner has scheduled a response to Barack Obama on Wednesday, as the White House planned to meet with congressional leaders on Friday, when both sides are expected to designate aides in search of a compromise.

Barack Obama met on Tuesday with allies from labor and liberal groups, and also invited a group of chief executives to the White House.

Earlier, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois said that “many Republicans believe now is the time to sit down and talk more revenue”, saying up to 20 Republican senators are willing to work towards accommodation.

But Senator Dick Durbin said “there is a great distance” between Republicans in the House and Senate.

“Basically it comes down to the question of whether Speaker Boehner is willing to look for a bipartisan solution.”

Deficit

The amount by which spending exceeds income over the course of a year.
In the case of trade, it refers to exports minus imports. In the case of the government budget, it equals the amount the government needs to borrow during the year to fund its spending. The government’s “primary” deficit means the amount it needs to borrow to cover general government expenditure, excluding interest payments on debts. The primary deficit therefore indicates whether a government will run out of cash if it is no longer able to borrow and decides to stop repaying its debts.

China set to unveil its new leaders for the next decade

China is set to unveil the new leaders who will rule for the next decade.

Early on Thursday, selected Communist Party delegates will endorse the new Politburo Standing Committee – the highest decision-making body.

The committee line-up will then be made public at 11:00, when leaders walk out in order of seniority.

Vice-President Xi Jinping is set to succeed outgoing leader Hu Jintao as party chief. Vice-Premier Li Keqiang is also on course for a top-level post.

It is not yet clear who will fill the other spaces on the committee or indeed how many spaces there will be.

Recent months have seen speculation that the committee could be reduced from nine to seven members.

Front-runners include Vice-Premier Wang Qishan, propaganda chief Liu Yunshan, party organization chief Li Yuanchao, Tianjin party boss Zhang Gaoli and Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang.

Guangdong party chief Wang Yang, Shanghai party boss Yu Zhengsheng and the only female politburo member, Liu Yandong, are also thought to be in contention.

Although the Central Committee delegates – elected before the week-long party congress closed on Wednesday – will vote for the new Standing Committee, in reality the selection will have been made ahead of time.

The move marks a generational shift in the party’s top ranks – the new leaders will be mostly in their late 50s.

They will gradually take over in the next few months, with Hu Jintao’s presidency formally coming to an end at the annual parliament session in March 2013.

The Communist Party will also announce on Thursday whether Hu Jintao will retain control of the Central Military Commission or pass it on to Xi Jinping. Hu Jintao’s predecessor, Jiang Zemin, held on to the post for two years after he stood down from the party leadership.

Under his administration China has seen a decade of extraordinary growth, overtaking Japan as the world’s second-largest economy.

But the development has been uneven, leading to a widening wealth gap, environmental challenges and rumbling social discontent over inequality and corruption.

On Wednesday, a party congress resolution hailed achievements under Hu Jintao, saying China had seized “the important period of strategic opportunities” for development.

Centralized party leadership was “the source of its strength and a fundamental guarantee for China’s economic and social development”, it emphasized.

Kim Kardashian and Larsa Pippen show off their bottoms

Kim Kardashian shared with her 16.6 million plus Twitter followers that she was being “so lazy”, which apparently seemed a great reason to post a snap of her bottom.

The 32-year-old was spending the evening with her pal Larsa Pippen of Real Housewives of Miami fame after returning to Miami following a trip to London.

Kim Kardashian posted the picture of herself and Larsa Pippen displaying their shapes along with the words: “We are being so lazy! @larsapippen & I can’t get up for dinner!”

The brunette was seen looking exhausted upon her return to Florida the evening before and it seems she hadn’t caught up on her rest before sharing the photo.

The image sees Kim Kardashian and Larsa Pippen lying on their fronts on a plush cream rug, in what appears to be a walk-in wardrobe, while admiring themselves in a full-length mirror.

There’s no doubt Kim Kardashian had every intention of highlighting her famously voluptuous figure as she sported a pair of skin-tight beige jodhpurs.

She teamed the sexy bottoms with a sheer white shirt and tied her glossy locks into a slick ponytail to complete her equestrian inspired look.

Meanwhile, Larsa Pippen sported leopard print yoga pants and a casual black top.

Two hours later, it seems the reality TV duo weren’t any closer to getting active.

Kim Kardashian posted another snap to her Twitter page – this time showing herself and Larsa Pippen pouting in front of the mirror.

As Kim Kardashian’s pal Jonathan Cheban can be seen in the background, she wrote alongside the photo: “Stop trying to photobomb @jonathancheban.”

Bruce Jenner consulted divorce lawyer as his marriage to Kris Jenner is on the rocks

Bruce and Kris Jenner have been hit by tabloid claims their marriage is on the rocks.

Former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner has apparently consulted a divorce lawyer regarding his 21-year marriage to the Kardashian matriarch.

This week’s edition of the National Enquirer reports Bruce Jenner has reached breaking point because of Kris allegedly flirting with younger men – and her ego over the Kardashian clan’s growing business empire.

The couple – who have teen daughters Kendall and Kylie together and a $155 million fortune – renewed their wedding vows last year, which was aired during an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

But insiders told the National Enquirer: “Bruce feels that Kris treats him like a doormat, and he’s had enough.

“She constantly belittles his appearance and complains to mutual friends that he’s a boring old fart.

“Then she has the gall to flaunt her relationships with younger guys in his face!”

The tabloid magazine reports that Bruce Jenner, 63, has been discussing the idea of divorce with golfing friends at Lake Sherwood Country Club in Calabasas, California, where he regularly attends.

The insider added that Bruce Jenner hates the way Kris Jenner, 57, is portrayed as the money-maker – and how his Country Club pals jokingly refer to him as “Bruce Kardashian”.

The National Enquirer claims Bruce Jenner has sought the help of an entertainment lawyer who has helped him value their assets in the event he decides to file for divorce.

“He’s also talked to a divorce attorney buddy about potential custody arrangements for his two girls with Kris,” the source added.

Jill Kelley bombarded with offers from TV networks to conduct a sit down chat

Jill Kelley, the woman at the center of the David Petraeus sex scandal, has refused to speak publicly about her involvement with former CIA chief and General John Allen.

Jill Kelley has remained at her colonial style mansion during the scandal, appearing briefly in bold designer dresses for the media who have gathered outside her home.

The mother-of-three has been bombarded with offers from TV networks to conduct a sit down chat about her relationship.

Jill Kelley is the most sought after person to be named in a Washington sex scandal since Monica Lewinsky and has hired a DC lawyer. A producer from CBS TV flew from New York to Jill Kelley’s Tampa home to drop off a request for a sit down.

The producer said the aim was to “get Kelley” to New York as the bids from other networks roll in.

Friends believe Jill Kelley will agree to talk – because she desperately needs the money.

Regions Bank filed a foreclosure lawsuit against her and husband Scott in April 2010, claiming they failed to make a payment on the mansion.

The bank demands repayment of $1.8 million in principal and interest on the mortgage.

Their company, Kelley Land Holdings, defaulted on a $2.1 million loan from Central Bank. Credit card issuer FIA Card Services sued Jill Kelley for defaulting on more than $25,000 in credit card debt.

It is a dramatic leap into the national media glare despite her eagerness to be a player on the local Florida social scene.

One unnamed officer at the base described Jill Kelley and her sister to the Washington Post as “rich Tampa socialites who like to hang out with four-generals”.

Since news of the affair between David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell broke on Friday the Kelleys have retained the services of high -owered Washington Lawyer Abbe Lowell.

Jill Kelley in the meantime has refused to draw the curtains on the large windows of her South Tampa home – a stately, two-story brick house with a half-dozen white columns – even visibly watching news coverage of the affair.

At least twice over the past two days Jill Kelley has left her home dressed up to the nines wearing dark sunglasses and ferried herself around town in her silver Mercedes.

Jill Kelley’s identical twin sister, Natalie Khawam, also lives inside the stately home with her.

South Tampa is a conservative Southern community of big houses, big bank accounts, garden clubs and wives who pride themselves on volunteer work.

Senior military figures from MacDill Air Force Base, where Central Command is headquartered, live and socialize in the area, where helping members of the military is a major volunteer activity.

Former Mayor Pam Iorio said that she went to several parties to benefit the military at the Kelleys’ home attended by figures including Petraeus.

But they were by far not the only parties held around the city for MacDill’s officers.

“Our community’s relationship with MacDill is just multifaceted,” said Pam Iorio, who later invited the Petraeuses over to her own home for dinner.

“It’s something that is generational. People sincerely care about the military.”

David Petraeus aides said Jill Kelley took it to another level, winning the title of “honorary ambassador” for her extensive entertaining. David Petraeus even honored Jill Kelley and her husband Scott with an award in a special ceremony at the Pentagon.

Jill Kelley invoked her honorary diplomatic status when she called 911 to complain about reporters on her property

0

Jill Kelley, the woman at the center of the David Petraeus sex scandal,  invoked her honorary diplomatic status on November 11 when she called to complain about reporters on her property.

“I’m an honorary consul general, so I have inviolability, so they should not be able to cross my property,” she told the 911 operator.

“I don’t know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved as well, because that’s against the law to cross my property because, you know, it’s inviolable.”

Jill Kelley was a frequent visitor to the sprawling military base. The doctor’s wife courted four star generals and other senior military figures as an unpaid liaison officer – describing herself as an “honorary consul” of South Korea – a position she achieved one official said “last August thanks to her good connections and network”.

She held lavish parties at her $1.3million home overlooking Tampa Bay where the General’s and their wives were feted.

In fact, her position of honorary consul, which she has proudly displayed on her Mercedes’ license plate, is symbolic and has no official duties.

“She does not work as a real consul,” the anonymous official said to Foreign Policy Magazine.

He added: “Jill Kelley helped to get support for [the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement] and she arranged meetings between the ROK Ambassador to Washington and local businessmen when the ROK Ambassador visited the Tampa area.”

Jill Kelley is a close friend of the Petraeus family, and photographs circulating in the media show the dark-haired woman at parties with David Petraeus and his wife Holly.

She also met General John Allen at Central Command, and now investigators are looking at 20,000-plus pages of documents and emails between Jill Kelley and Allen.

Jill Kelley’ military access at Tampa base revoked during David Petraeus inquiry

0

Jill Kelley, the woman at the center of the David Petraeus sex scandal, is facing the prospect of being blackballed by the military establishment.

Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa socialite who hosted parties for the nation’s top brass, has been told today that she is no longer welcome at military HQ near her Florida home.

Her complaint over threatening emails triggered an FBI investigation that led to CIA director David Petraeus’ resignation when it came to light that he was having an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell.

In an increasingly tangled sex scandal, Jill Kelley is now at the center of an investigation over alleged “inappropriate communications” between her and General John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.

Jill Kelley and her identical twin sister Natalie Khawam rose from humble beginnings as daughter of Lebanese immigrants in Pennsylvania, to prolific networkers on the Tampa social scene close to Central Command.

However, her role in a sex scandal that may have heavy repercussions for national security led to a military official calling Jill Kelley to revoke her access pass while an investigation into the 30,000 “flirtatious” emails is carried out.

Defence Secretary Leon Panetta ordered the inquiry while President Barack Obama has given his backing to Allen while the investigation takes place.

“She did have base access but does not currently because of her involvement in an ongoing investigation,” a military official told the Tampa Tribune.

Both generals, David Petraeus and John Allen, met Jill Kelley, who friends have described as a “ferocious social climber”, when they were in charge at U.S. Central Command in 2008.

Jill Kelley has refused to speak publicly about her involvement with David Petraeus, who turned 60 last week, and General John Allen.

John Allen, 58, has denied any wrongdoing and insisted his relationship with Jill Kelley was purely platonic.

Jill Kelley has remained at her colonial style mansion during the scandal, appearing briefly in bold designer dresses for the media who have gathered outside her home.

Anne Petraeus wedding: Jill Kelley and Natalie Khawam among guests

0

Jill Kelley, the Florida socialite who sparked the FBI’s discovery of the affair between David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell, scooped an invite to his daughter Anne’s high security wedding last month.

Jill Kelley – whose own alleged relationship with General John Allen has led to his nomination to lead American troops in Europe being put on hold – was invited to the wedding of Anne Petraeus and Matt Mauney, alongside her twin sister Natalie Khawam.

Pictures taken at the nuptials clearly show Jill Kelley, 37, standing just behind the elegant bride as she claps along to a band and mingles with guests said to have included Vice President Joe Biden – and illustrate just how far the ambitious brunette had infiltrated the high-powered political world.

Anne Petraeus has posted many pictures of her big day on her website fANNEtasticfood.com and in a post called We’re Married! the 30-year-old blonde, who is a trained dietician, gave a sneak peak at her reception – with Jill Kelley standing behind her in one of the photos.

Dressed in a smart black gown, Jill Kelley – who was the unpaid “social liaison” at MacDill Air Force base in Tampa – looked to be having a fine time at the wedding, held at Rosemont Manor in Berryville, Virginia, on October 13.

Frances Townsend, former Homeland and Counterterrorism security advisor to President George Bush, today even tweeted: “Sources tell me Jill Kelley & twin both attended the Petraeus daughter wedding last month whr 1 guest refrd 2 them as the Kardashian twins!”

The wedding was said to be a high security affair as pr service PR Log noted three days after the wedding that: “Berryville was abuzz this past weekend as residents noticed tightened security around Historic Rosemont Manor, the former estate of Virginia Governor and US Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr.

“Rumors began circulating around town that Vice-President Joe Biden was at Rosemont. Others thought Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta was visiting.

“Berryville Police and Clarke County Sheriff Department cruisers and several unmarked SUV’s were parked within the perimeter of the Rosemont estate, some noticeable from the road.”

General Manager Bill North acknowledged that while there was heightened security at Rosemont, all Rosemont clients are offered a high level of privacy and security, saying: “Obviously, this wedding has special significance because of General Petraeus’s presence, but there will be other weddings in the future that will have enhanced security.”

Stephanie Bongiovi, Jon Bon Jovi’s daughter, arrested and hospitalized for drug overdosing

Stephanie Bongiovi, Jon Bon Jovi’s teenage daughter, was arrested at her college on Wednesday morning – after allegedly overdosing on heroin.

Police in Upstate New York responded to a call that Stephanie Rose Bongiovi, 19, was unresponsive in her dorm room at Hamilton College – a well respected, $55,000-a-year liberal arts institution in Kirkland.

Stephanie is understood to have received medical treatment and is set to be released from hospital at some point on Wednesday.

Cops and a volunteer ambulance squad were called to the scene at 1.51am, according to People.com.

The room was searched and a “small quantity” of heroin along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia was found, according to the Town of Kirkland Police Department.

Stephanie Bongiovi – also an aspiring model – was arrested and charged on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance possession of marijuana and criminally using drug paraphernalia, police say.

She has since been released from custody and ordered to appear in court at a later date on the misdemeanor charges, TMZ reports.

Police also arrested and charged 21-year-old student Ian S. Grant on suspicion of drug possession, who like Stephanie Bongiovi, is from Red Bank, New Jersey, People reports.

Hamilton College has released a statement, saying it is co-operating with the police investigation – but would not say what action it will be taking against Stephanie Bongiovi.

It says say the “alleged actions” not only violate state law, but also contravene college policy – stressing the primary concern is with “the safety of our students”.

The statement, obtained by WKTV, reads: “The college is cooperating with the police investigation.

“Our first concern is always for the safety of our students. Out of respect for the privacy of our students and in accordance with federal regulations we do not discuss individual health or disciplinary matters.”

Stephanie Bongiovi is Jon Bon Jovi’s only daughter and the oldest of his four children, who he shares with wife Dorothea Hurley.

The news will no doubt come as a huge blow to Jon Bon Jovi, 50, who these days prides himself on his family-man reputation.

Jon Bon Jovi has been married to Dorothea Hurley – his childhood sweetheart – for 23 years and is regarded as having one of the strongest marriages in Hollywood.

He has admitted to dabbling in drugs himself in the past – but says he “wised up quickly”.

In a 2007 interview with Best Life magazine, Jon Bon Jovi confessed: “I did the drug thing very young and wised up very young too, because I was into drugs a little too much.

“I’ve never been a drug guy. I’ve always felt I didn’t have the mental stability to handle drugs.”

David Petraeus scandal: Barack Obama says he has seen no evidence of national security breach

President Barack Obama says he has seen “no evidence” that former CIA director David Petraeus’ extramarital affair compromised national security.

General David Petraeus’ resignation should be a “sidenote” to his distinguished career, Barack Obama added in his first public comments on the scandal.

The general will testify to Congress about September’s attack on the US consulate in Libya, a top senator says.

Republican senators have called for a joint committee to probe that attack.

Barack Obama declined to say whether the White House should have been informed earlier of the investigation into David Petraeus.

“I am withholding judgment with respect to how the entire process surrounding General Petraeus came up. We don’t have all the information yet,” Barack Obama said.

He added that he had a lot of confidence in the FBI and that they have a “difficult job” to do.

News of the scandal shocked officials in Washington in the immediate aftermath of the US election. Congressional leaders of both parties have said they should have been informed earlier.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said General David Petraeus, who stepped down on Friday, would give evidence only about the Benghazi attack, in which four Americans were killed.

He would not testify about his resignation over an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell, she added.

Confirmation that David Petraeus will attend a committee hearing comes after days of reports focusing on the fallout from the revelation that he had an extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell.

After the CIA director’s resignation, it then emerged that Jill Kelley, who filed a harassment report over emails she received that led to the discovery of the affair, was in contact with Marine General John Allen.

The link to General John Allen – currently commanding US forces in Afghanistan and nominated to be the top NATO commander in Europe – prompted the US defence secretary and the White House to stress they have complete confidence in him.

But Leon Panetta requested that Gen Allen’s nomination as Supreme Allied Commander of US and NATO troops in Europe be placed on hold, saying it was the “prudent” thing to do.

General John Allen has denied any wrongdoing and has spoken to Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to emphasize he is innocent of misconduct, a spokesman for Gen Dempsey said.

David Petraeus could appear before congressional committees as early as Thursday, although no final date for a hearing has been confirmed.

Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the general would be asked about the Benghazi attacks, which took place while he was in charge of the CIA.

The attack – initially blamed on a spontaneous protest over an anti-Islamic film – remains a divisive issue in Washington and a focal point of Republican anger.

Arizona Senator John McCain led a group of Republican senators on Wednesday calling for the establishment of a special committee to investigate the deaths of the four Americans, which included the Ambassador Christopher Stevens, in Benghazi.

They said there was need to find out whether there had been a cover-up over the attack, which Senator Lindsay Graham referred to in the same breath as Watergate and the Iran/Contra scandal.

Republicans have also criticized UN Ambassador Susan Rice, after she cited the protests as the reason for the attacks in appearances on US media.

On Wednesday, Barack Obama said Susan Rice had fulfilled her diplomatic duties with “skill and professionalism, and toughness and grace”, and that it was “outrageous” to muddy her reputation.

The president suggested that Republicans had criticized Susan Rice “apparently because they think she’s an easy target”, and said he would co-operate with congressional investigations into what happened in Benghazi.

Meanwhile, acting CIA Director Michael Morell began meetings with legislators in the Senate on Tuesday to answer questions about David Petraeus’ resignation.

Legislators are concerned about a possible breach of national security after it was reported that classified material was discovered on Paula Broadwell’s computer.

However, FBI officials have said the agency concluded in its investigation that there had not been any security breach.

President Barack Obama has made his first public comments on the scandal at a news conference, before meeting business leaders.

His remarks concentrated on his economic agenda and plans for reaching a deal to avoid a package of spending cuts and tax rises known as the “fiscal cliff”.

While David Petraeus attempts to focus on Benghazi, Pentagon investigators are also examining as many as 30,000 pages of Gen Allen’s documents.

They are said to include extensive communication between the general and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old, married Florida socialite.

The emails are now understood to have included pet names such as “sweetheart” or “dear” but were not sexually explicit or seductive, the Associated Press reports.

In May, Jill Kelley reported anonymous, harassing emails to the FBI. The agency launched an investigation that traced the emails to Paula Broadwell and revealed her affair with David Petraeus.

Jill Kelley has been described as a “social liaison” for the MacDill Air Force Base near Tampa, Florida. Home to the US Central Command, both generals have served at the base in recent years.

The Kelleys are said to have developed close friendships with General David Petraeus and General John Allen, both of whom wrote letters supporting Jill Kelley’s twin sister, Natalie Khawam, in a messy custody battle for her son.

Jill Kelley is known to have thrown extravagant parties for the officers posted there and in August was appointed as an honorary consul representing South Korea, ABC News reports.

It is reported that her Mercedes car displays consular license plates reading “JK1”.

In a recording of a phone call to police on Monday, Jill Kelley asked for diplomatic immunity to have media crews waiting outside her house removed.

“I’m an honorary consul general, so I have inviolability, so they should not be able to cross my property. I don’t know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved as well,” Jill Kelley can be heard saying.

Drunk businessman trying to walk wrong way down escalator

A “drunk” businessman, who was so determined to reach his platform at the London Underground, attempted to walk the wrong way down an escalator.

A fellow commuter captured this footage of the businessman, wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase, trying to ride down to the tube on an escalator moving upwards at Tottenham Court Road.

Despite moving absolutely nowhere, the unnamed man continues to take on the escalator with dogged determination.

And he keeps going even when several other passengers point out he is walking the wrong way.

One good Samaritan makes several attempts to lead him off the escalator but the businessman takes no notice and continues on his fruitless journey.

After struggling for more than two minutes as people push past – he is guided off by a helpful commuter who pushes the emergency stop button and points him in the right direction.

The incident was caught on camera last Friday by Sam Napper, 27, who described the man as a “drunk Japanese businessman”.

Sam, from London, said: “I was making my way home after dinner when we quite literally bumped into this chap on the escalators between the Northern and Central Lines at Tottenham Court Road station.

“At first I thought he was playing silly buggers with a few of his FX Trader mates but then we saw his dogged stagger and realized he was alone.

“One by one, concerned commuters tried to steer him in the right direction, to no avail.

“Eventually, someone pushed the emergency stop button.

“After pausing for a few seconds, he turned around and walked out, as if nothing ever happened, saying nothing, leaving us stunned.”

Nick Cannon reveals Mariah Carey doesn’t change Monroe and Moroccan’s nappies

Nick Cannon revealed wife Mariah Carey always tries to get out of changing their toddlers’ nappies.

The funnyman says Mariah Carey usually finds a way to make sure he is the one left holding the dirty diapers after 18-month old twins Monroe and Moroccan.

Speaking on Anderson Live, Nick Cannon, 31, told the show’s host: “It’s a good time! Right now, the kids run the house. We are just running and chasing after them and then my wife is being the diva that she is. I am trying to keep up with them.”

When the newsman asked if the Glitter favorite was “a big diaper changer” and “who changes the most?” Nick Cannon’s response was perhaps no surprise.

He gave a hearty laugh as he said: “Me,” raising incredulous guffaws from Anderson.

The America’s Got Talent host added: “I mean we all do it but for some reason I get that duty a little bit more.

“I am not scared of it. I go in, I put the gloves on. Real men change diapers!”

While Anderson did not look too keen on the idea, his co-host Jane Velez-Mitchell gave a supportive grin.

Later the radio host spoke about of his wife’s reported feud with fellow American Idol judge Nicki Minaj.

He said: “Think it was what it was. A lot of theatrics and stuff.

“I guess I was a little disappointed in the producers because that’s not what American Idol is about.

“I felt like they fed off of it a little bit. You know, people are always going to have disagreements and stuff.

“Clearly you can see that they are a very intense judging panel but obviously everybody is interested in what the show is going to be about and my wife is the classiest and the strongest woman that I’ve ever met so she’s handling it the way she is supposed to handle it.”

Vernon Loeb, ghost-writer of David Petraeus’ biography, says he had no idea of former CIA boss and Paula Broadwell affair

0

Vernon Loeb, the journalist who co-wrote Paula Broadwell’s biography of General David Petraeus, has confessed to being the “most clueless man in America” for never realizing the two were having an affair.

Vernon Loeb, a Washington Post reporter who covered the Pentagon, was the ghost-writer on Paula Broadwell’s effusive All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.

Colleagues raised an eyebrow at the exclusive access David Petraeus gave to Paula Broadwell, he dismissed any questions, he said.

In a column for the Post, Vernon Loeb said he found Paula Broadwell ambitious, driven and intelligent.

He said he questioned David Petraeus letting her into his inner circle, but explained away his own concerns with realization the two are alike in important ways.

Both David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell are fiercely competitive runners and both a Ivy League-educated West Point Military Academy graduates.

But, Vernon Loeb admits, his judgement was flawed.

“My wife says I’m the most clueless person in America,” he wrote.

“I never anticipated the extramarital affair between David H. Petraeus and Paula Broadwell, the woman I’d worked with for 16 months on a book about Petraeus’s year commanding the war in Afghanistan.”

Vernon Loeb said signs were there, but he always dismissed them.

“Female colleagues of mine weren’t shy in remarking about Broadwell’s good looks and her affinity for flashy, cocktail party attire even at staid national security conferences,” he wrote.

But, Vernon Loeb said, Paula Broadwell spoke warmly about her husband, a surgical radiologist in Charlotte, North Carolina, and she “clearly adores” her two young sons.

The Washington Post journalist says he wrote the book from the basement of his home in Maryland based on the notes and emails collected by Paula Broadwell on her reporting trips.

Paula Broadwell edited most of the manuscript to add her own take on David Petraeus’ command in Afghanistan – including much of the highest praise she communicated throughout the book.

Paula Broadwell photographed for the first time since the resignation of David Petraeus at her brother’s home in Washington DC

0

Pictured for the first time since her scandalous affair with shamed former CIA boss David Petraeus became public on Friday, Paula Broadwell has taken refuge at a house owned by her brother, Stephen Kranz, in the Petworth suburb of Washington D.C.

The 40-year-old mother of two was seen looking pensive as she sipped a glass of red wine and spoke to a man and woman in the kitchen on Tuesday night – yet there was no sign of her husband Scott Broadwell.

Paula Broadwell’s emergence from the shadows came a night after FBI agents visited her Charlotte, North Carolina home and left with electronic equipment. She has not returned there since the scandal broke.

A source told ABC the search came after Paula Broadwell admitted to the FBI that she had taken significant amounts of military documents, including classified material, from government buildings to her home.

The government demanded she return the documents and organized the visit. Prosecutors are now deciding whether to charge her with a crime as she has potentially violated federal law.

It was Paula Broadwell’s threatening emails to Jill Kelley, a Florida socialite who is a David Petraeus family friend that led to the FBI’s discovery of the affair between the biographer-turned-mistress and the nation’s top spy-chief.

David Petraeus’ biography fake cover appears during ABC’s Denver broadcast

0

As if the All In title wasn’t controversial enough for the David Petraeus biography written by his mistress Paula Broadwell, a news station ran a fake book cover during a broadcast – with a few unfortunate words added.

The blunder occurred during ABC’s Denver affiliate KMGH-TV’s 5:00 p.m. news broadcast yesterday, when the image of Paula Broadwell’s All In: The Education of David Petraeus, appeared alongside a recent video of her speaking.

But the title of the book had been altered to say: “All Up in My S*****.”

The photo pops up as one of the top images when doing a Google search of the words “All In” and “Broadwell”, which is likely what the editor searched for.

The photo links to DeathandTaxesmag.com, which had removed the image by Tuesday morning – but republished it later in the day.

In a story on KMGH-TV’s own website, news director Jeff Harris called the incident “a regrettable and an embarrassing error”.

He added: “We are mortified this appeared during our 5 p.m. news broadcast. The editor pulled the image of the book cover from the internet without realizing it had been doctored.

“We sincerely regret the error and have corrected the story to avoid any recurrence of its broadcast. We are following up internally as well to avoid a repeat of this inexcusable oversight.”

There was no mention of the editor’s name, or whether he or she will be keeping their job.

As news of the story broke, the title of the book has been called out as an early indication of what David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell were up to.

Last night, Daily Show host Jon Stewart joked that the title should have been “Who Has Two Thumbs and Is Banging His Biographer?”

Paula Broadwell’s driver’s license found by jogger in Rock Creek Park, Washington DC

0

A jogger recently discovered a driver’s license belonging to Paula Broadwell, the woman whose affair with David Petraeus led to his resignation as CIA director, according to Maryland Park Police.

Paula Broadwell’s North Carolina license was found in Rock Creek Park, a national park that extends across Washington, D.C.’s northwest border with Maryland. The license was found in D.C. but the jogger who picked it up turned it over to the Maryland Park Police.

Paula Broadwell’s lawyer, Robert F. Muse, confirmed to U.S. News that his client had recently lost her license in the park. The agency notified the FBI that it had obtained the license and is now holding it for 90 days until it is claimed.

Paula Broadwell is believed to be staying at her brother’s residence in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Washington D.C., which is near Rock Creek Park.

The 40-year-old mother of two, who wrote a biography on David Petraeus, has often talked about how she and the ex-CIA chief enjoyed going on long runs together.

David Petraeus believed he could keep his affair with Paula Broadwell secret even after he was interviewed by the FBI

0

Former CIA Director David Petraeus believed he could keep his affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell secret even after he was interviewed by the FBI, it emerged today.

After meeting David Petraeus on October 21 and also conducting two interviews with Paula Broadwell, the second on November 2nd, the FBI had concluded that no criminal charges would be brought.

But the FBI appears to have decided to inform the White House after a Florida-based agent informed a Republican member of Congress of the investigation.

This was the same agent who had triggered the inquiry when his friend, the socialite Jill Kelley, complained to him about anonymous harassing emails.

The fallout now threatens to engulf General John Allen of the US Marines, the NATO commander in Afghanistan. He is said to have exchanged between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of emails with Kelley since 2010.

To complicate matters further, the FBI agent had allegedly sent shirtless photos of himself to Jill Kelley before she reported the harassing emails to him and had been told not to interfere in the investigation.

The agent, depicted by government officials as a Right-winger, contacted Representative Dave Reichert and asked for a member of the House Republican leadership. On October 31st, Dave Reichert put him in contact with Representative Eric Cantor, House Majority Whip.

Eric Cantor informed the FBI of his conversation with the FBI agent, now himself under internal investigation, but did not make the matter public. Eric Cantor apparently knew of the FBI investigation into David Petraeus’ affair eight days before President Barack Obama.

The allegedly harassing emails were discovered to have been sent by Paula Broadwell. It is believed that John Allen received at least one email from the same email account used by Paula Broadwell to contact Jill Kelley.

John Allen is now under investigation by the Pentagon’s inspector general and his Senate confirmation hearings for the new post of NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, originally due on Thursday, have been put on hold.

A senior defence official told reporters that it was alleged there had been “inappropriate communications” between John Allen and Jill Kelley, Leon Panetta, Defence Secretary, said in a statement.

If John Allen follows David Petraeus into retirement it will leave Barack Obama with two gaping holes to fill at the heart of his national security team at a time when he is also expected to be replacing his secretaries of state, defence and treasury.

It is unclear exactly when FBI Director Robert Mueller and Attorney-General Eric Holder were informed although it has emerged that the investigation began as early as May.

Jill Kelley taunted over her large nose in high school

0

Yesterday it was revealed that Jill Kelley was taunted over her large nose in high school and vowed to get plastic surgery to make it look better.

Perhaps the episode points to an inner frailty about her looks that drove her determination to have a string of powerful men in her thrall.

Jill Kelley, the woman who is at the center of the scandal that has felled two top generals told fellow pupils when she and her twin sister, Natalie Khawam, were 18, that they were “going to get a nose job and when we you do you’ll all be in awe of us”.

She was also “flirtatious”, gave boys she met a big grin and used to wear tight blue jeans which brought many an admiring male gaze.

It is not clear if Jill Kelley followed through on her promise to get plastic surgery.

The claims show that Jill Kelley’s interest in carefully crafting her image started at an early age.

Since the David Petraeus scandal broke, Jill Kelley has appeared in public “looking a million dollars”, notably in a bright yellow dress and three inch heels as she climbed into her Mercedes outside her mansion in Tampa, Florida yesterday and today in a polished pink and gold heels ensemble.

Judging by pictures in her high school yearbook, then Jill Khawam was glamorous and well aware of her charms even at a young age.

In her official 1993 graduation photo for Lower Moreland High School in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, Jill Khawam posed wearing a black dress and pearls around her neck with her jet black hair tumbling over her left shoulder.

Her body is turned to the left and has a radiant grin on her face

Jill Kelley, 37, has become the central figure in the scandal which has caused General David Petraeus, 60, to step down as head of the CIA and forced General John Allen to stand down from his post leading US troops in Afghanistan.

General John Allen, who is married, sent her between 20,000 to 30,000 e-mail messages, some of which were of an inappropriate nature.

David Petraeus sent X-rated emails to Paula Broadwell

0

The military scandal gripping America took an extraordinary twist yesterday, when a second general, John R. Allen, was linked to one of the two women who precipitated the fall of CIA director General David Petraeus.

David Petraeus, 60, hailed by some as the finest officer of his generation, was forced to step down after the exposure of a scandal involving X-rated emails, compromised state secrets and an affair forged in the ruins of Afghanistan.

His mistress was revealed as Paula Broadwell, a glamorous defence academic and ex-army officer, who had written a fawning biography of David Petraeus after she was “embedded” with him in Afghanistan.

Though they conducted their affair via private email accounts and with sufficient discretion to hoodwink even the suspicious minds of his CIA subordinates, it came to light thanks to old-fashioned female jealousy.

Paula Broadwell became convinced that she was, in fact, involved in a love triangle – and not one that involved David Petraeus’ wife, Holly.

The “other woman”, a 37-year-old Florida socialite and mother of three named Jill Kelley, went to the FBI after receiving threatening emails from Paula Broadwell.

But, almost incredibly, the investigation she set in train not only led to the demise of David Petraeus, but has ensnared another senior figure, General John Allen.

Yesterday, the Pentagon announced that General John Allen, 58, – who was about to be appointed NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe – is being investigated for “inappropriate communication” with Jill Kelley.

Paula Broadwell, a glamorous defence academic and ex-army officer, had written a fawning biography of David Petraeus after she was embedded with him in Afghanistan
Paula Broadwell, a glamorous defence academic and ex-army officer, had written a fawning biography of David Petraeus after she was embedded with him in Afghanistan

While investigating Jill Kelley’s case, the FBI discovered what it says amounts to between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of emails between her and General John Allen between 2010 and 2012. Yesterday, some of those emails were described by a senior defence official as “flirtatious”.

John Allen succeeded Petraeus as the head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, but his new European post is now on hold.

Like David Petraeus, John Allen got to know Jill Kelley when he was stationed at Central Command near her home in Tampa, Florida, where she organizes social events for senior military families.

Not only has the widening scandal been disastrous for the Petraeus, Broadwell and Kelley families, but it has also caused major ructions in Washington as the first nightmare of the new Barack Obama presidency.

Some FBI agents considered the missives too trivial to warrant following up, but – encouraged by Jill Kelley’s FBI chum – investigators spent weeks tracing where the emails had been sent from, and eventually matched them to hotels where Paula Broadwell had been staying.

Gaining a warrant to monitor her emails, they discovered Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus – using a pseudonym – had set up private Google Mail accounts to send steamy messages to each other.

(Terrorists use the technique, by which the sender can leave messages in a “draft” folder so the recipient can log in and read them without anything being emailed.)

By late summer, the FBI had worked out the general was involved and – alerting the U.S. Justice Department and Attorney General Eric Holder – they interviewed Paula Broadwell in September.

Paula Broadwell admitted the affair and agreed to hand over her computer. On its hard drive, investigators found copies of undisclosed classified documents – a discovery that inevitably rang even louder alarm bells. (Federal agents returned to her home on Monday night and removed boxes of documents and two computers.)

Confronted by the FBI with its evidence the week before the presidential election, David Petraeus also admitted to the affair, but insisted he hadn’t sent the secret material to his mistress.

Officials are reportedly convinced David Petraeus is telling the truth, but still don’t know how the documents were found on Paula Broadwell’s computer.

Pat Robertson defends David Petraeus’ affair with Paula Broadwell

0

David Petraeus found one surprising defender on Tuesday in conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson.

Pat Robertson, who is host of the Christian current events TV show The 700 Club, seemed to justify the disgraced CIA Director’s relationship with Paula Broadwell.

“The man is in a foreign land and he’s lonely and here’s a good looking lady throwing herself at him and… he’s a man,” Pat Robertson said.

He seemed sympathetic to David Petraeus’ “affairs of the heart”, and implied that he seemed to be a tragic victim.

“I don’t think he’s a devious human being. I think he’s been one of the greatest general America has ever produced. He’s a brilliant man, he’s got a Ph.D. from Princeton,” Pat Robertson said.

He added: “We’ll sadly miss a man like that.”

David Petraeus, one of the country’s most decorated war heroes, resigned from his post as the nation’s top spy on Friday after the FBI stumbled across email evidence of a months-long affair between him and Paula Broadwell.

Both are married with children, but David Petraeus, age 60, is 20 years Paula Broadwell’s senior.

Pat Robertson, who is host of the Christian current events TV show The 700 Club, seemed to justify David Petraeus' relationship with Paula Broadwell
Pat Robertson, who is host of the Christian current events TV show The 700 Club, seemed to justify David Petraeus’ relationship with Paula Broadwell

Pat Robertson said it was easy to explained the attraction between the two.

“She is a Lt. Colonel. She is an extremely good looking woman. She is a marathon runner. She runs Ironman triathlons. And she’s out running with him and she’s writing a biography and… I think the term is propinquity.”

Propinquity is a social science term that explains how intimately people connect with each other based on a combination of physical proximity and how similar their backgrounds and viewpoints are.

The Virginia Beach-based broadcaster’s take on the sex scandal immediately drew fire, especially from liberal groups.

“There is no evidence that Broadwell initiated the relationship and, even if she did, that doesn’t mean that he no responsibility for his decision to engage in extra-marital relations,” wrote left-wing news site Think Progress.

“Apparently Pat Robertson thinks men can’t control their bodies, but they have the divine right to control women’s. Huh.,” tweeted Daily Beat blogger Emily L. Hauser.

Google reveals global data snoops from its Transparency Report

According to Google’s Transparency Report, governments around the world made nearly 21,000 requests for access to its data in the first six months of 2012.

Google’s Transparency Report indicates government surveillance of online lives is rising sharply.

The US government made the most demands, asking for details 7,969 times in the first six months of 2012.

Turkey topped the list for requests to remove content.

Google, in common with other technology and communication companies, regularly receives requests from government agencies and courts around the world to have access to content.

It has been publishing its Transparency Report twice a year since 2009 and has seen a steady rise in government demands for data. In its first report in 2009, it received 12,539 requests. The latest figure stands at 20,939.

“This is the sixth time we’ve released this data, and one trend has become clear: government surveillance is on the rise,” Google said in a blog post.

The report acts as a bellwether for government behavior around the world, said a Google spokeswoman.

“It reflects laws on the ground. For example in Turkey there are specific laws about defaming public figures whereas in Germany we get requests to remove neo-Nazi content,” she said.

“And in Brazil we get a lot of requests to remove content during elections because there is a law banning parodies of candidates.

“We hope that the report will shed light on how governments interact with online services and how laws are reflected in online behavior,” she added.

The US has consistently topped the charts for data requests. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK are also in the top 10.

In France and Germany it complied with fewer than half of all requests. In the UK it complied with 64% of requests and 90% of requests from the US.

Google said the top three reasons cited by government for content removal were defamation, privacy and security.

Worldwide authorities made 1,789 requests for Google to remove content, up from 1,048 requests for the last six months of 2011.

In the period from January to June, Turkey made 501 requests for content removal.

These included 148 requests related to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk – the first president of Turkey, the current government, national identity and values.

Others included claims of pornography, hate speech and copyright.

Google has its own criteria for whether it will remove content – the request must be specific, relate to a specific web address and have come from a relevant authority.

Toyota recalls 2.7 million cars worldwide because of steering wheel and water pump system problems

0

Toyota has decided to recall 2.7 million cars worldwide because of problems with the steering wheel and water pump system.

The recall affects nine models, including the Toyota Corolla and the second-generation Prius.

It comes four weeks after the firm recalled more than seven million vehicles worldwide, including some Corolla and Camry models, over faulty window switches.

Toyota is Japan’s biggest carmaker.

Joichi Tachikawa, a spokesman for Toyota, said the problem with the steering wheel was to do with “insufficient hardness of the steering shaft”.

He explained that due to this, the splines which connect the extension shaft to the gearbox may deform if the steering wheel is “frequently and forcefully turned to the full lock position while driving at a very slow speed”.

“This may create an increased backlash and the splines may eventually wear out over time, which could result in loss of steering ability,” he added.

However, Joichi Tachikawa said that no accidents due to this fault had been reported so far.

Toyota’s reputation was damaged in 2009 by a recall that ended up involving 12 million vehicles and fines from US regulators.

The Japanese carmaker is still trying to rebuild its reputation and regain customer trust after that fiasco, which saw the firm’s head apologizing to consumers.

Its efforts to do so have been dealt a blow over the past few weeks, as it has announced recalls totaling nearly 10 million vehicles.

However, some analysts said that while the latest recalls, which are voluntary, were a setback, they might not cause as much damage to its reputation as the ones in 2009.

“Nobody is perfect. Vehicles nowadays are very complicated,” said Koichi Sugimoto, an auto analyst with BNP Paribas in Tokyo.

“The company is taking appropriate measures to fix the problems, so I don’t think this will cause significant damage to Toyota’s reputation.”

Australia eclipse: thousands of tourists and astronomers gathered in Queensland to see rare total solar eclipse

Tens of thousands of tourists and astronomers gathered in northern Australia to glimpse a rare total solar eclipse.

The eclipse, which occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, plunged parts of Queensland into darkness for just over two minutes.

Estimates suggest the event, early on Wednesday, was viewed live by millions.

A partial eclipse was expected in other parts of the region, including New Zealand and eastern Indonesia.

The next total solar eclipse will not take place until March 2015.

Onlookers gathered at vantage points, in boats and on hot air balloons to witness the rare phenomenon.

There had been fears that cloudy weather would obscure the eclipse but the clouds parted just as it began, drawing cheers from the crowd as the full spectacle came into view.

“Immediately before, I was thinking, <<Are we gonna see this?>> And we just had a fantastic display – it was just beautiful,” said Terry Cuttle, from the Astronomical Association of Queensland.

“And right after it finished, the clouds came back again. It really adds to the drama of it.”

“It’s really cool. I’ve never seen anything like this before,” one young spectator at Palm Cove said.

Temperatures dropped as the shadow of the Moon blocked the Sun, and animals reacted to the eclipse with confusion.

“Wow, insects and birds gone quiet,” one tourist, Geoff Scott, tweeted.

Scientists were set to use footage from underwater cameras at the Great Barrier Reef to investigate creatures’ reactions to the eclipse.

Australian tour operators welcomed the surge in holiday-makers, with reports of some hotels being booked up more than three years in advance.

State officials estimate that over 50,000 extra people visited Queensland to experience the phenomenon.
