Water on Mars: Scientists have definitive proof that water existed on Red Planet

Scientists have found definitive proof that many of the landscapes seen on Mars were indeed cut by flowing water.

The valleys, channels and deltas viewed from orbit have long been thought to be the work of water erosion, but it is NASA’s latest rover, Curiosity, that has provided the “ground truth”.

Researchers report its observations of rounded pebbles on the floor of the Red Planet’s 100 mile-wide Gale Crater.

Their smooth appearance is identical to gravels found in rivers on Earth.

Rock fragments that bounce along the bottom of a stream of water will have their edges knocked off, and when these pebbles finally come to rest they will often align in a characteristic overlapping fashion.

Curiosity has pictured these features in a number of rock outcrops at the base of Gale Crater.

It is confirmation that water has played its part in sculpting not only this huge equatorial bowl but by implication many of the other landforms seen on the planet.

“For decades, we have speculated and hypothesized that the surface of Mars was carved by water, but this is the first time where you can see the remnants of stream flow with what are absolutely tell-tale signs,” said Dr. Rebecca Williams from the Planetary Science Institute.

NASA first announced the discovery of the pebbles in September last year, barely seven weeks after Curiosity had landed in Gale.

Researchers have since been studying the robot’s pictures in more detail and have now written up a report for Science magazine – the first scholarly paper from the surface mission to make it into print; and the study reinforces the initial interpretation.

It describes the nature of the outcrops, and estimates the probable conditions in which their sediments were laid down.

The pebbles range in size from about two to 40 mm in diameter – too big to have been blown along by the wind.

These clasts, as scientists will often call them, are cemented together in a sandy matrix to make a rock type referred to as a conglomerate.

In many places, the clasts are touching each other, and the pictures show examples of so-called imbrication – an arrangement where elongated pebbles stack like a row of toppled dominos. It is a classic sign of past river activity.

Precisely dating landforms on Mars is not possible, but the rock outcrops seen by the rover are almost certainly more than three billion years old.

Curiosity’s pictures have enabled the team to make some informed statements about the speed and depth of the water that once flowed across the crater floor.

The pebbles come in a variety of dark and light shades, further indicating that they have been eroded from different rock types and transported from different locations.

Using its Chemcam remote-sensing laser, the rover was able to detect feldspar in the lighter toned clasts.

Feldspar is a common mineral on Earth that weathers quickly in the presence of water.

This suggests past conditions were not overly wet and that the pebbles were carried only a relatively short distance – probably no more than 10-15km.

This fits with satellite observations of what appears to be a nearby network of old rivers or streams spreading away from the mouth of a channel that cuts through the northern rim of Gale Crater.

This valley – or Peace Vallis as it is known – is the probable route down which the water flowed and later dumped its load of rounded gravels.

Curiosity is due to drive back on itself in the coming weeks as it makes for the big peak, Mount Sharp, at the centre of the crater.

Scientists hope this will take the vehicle past similar rock outcrops so that additional pictures can be obtained.

Huge asteroid 1998 QE2 set for Earth fly-by

Huge asteroid 1998 QE2, that measures nearly 1.7 miles across, is set to fly past the Earth.

The space rock is so large that it is orbited by its own moon.

It will make its closest approach to our planet at 20:59 GMT, but scientists say there is no chance that it will hit.

Instead it will keep a safe distance – at closest, about 3.6 million miles.

That is about 200 times more distant than the asteroid “near-miss” that occurred in February – but Friday’s passing space rock is more than 50,000 times larger.

Prof. Alan Fitzsimmons, an astronomer at Queen’s University Belfast, said: “It’s a big one. And there are very few of these objects known – there are probably only about 600 or so of this size or larger in near-Earth space.

“And importantly, if something this size did hit us one day in the future, it is extremely likely it would cause global environmental devastation, so it is important to try and understand these objects.”

Huge asteroid 1998 QE2, that measures nearly 1.7 miles across, is set to fly past the Earth

This fly-by will give astronomers the chance to study the rocky mass in detail.

Using radar telescopes, they will record a series of high-resolution images.

They want to find out what it is made of, and exactly where in the Solar System it came from.

Prof. Alan Fitzsimmons said: “We already know from the radar measurements, coupled with its brightness, that it appears to be a relatively dark asteroid – that it’s come from the outer part of the asteroid belt.”

Early analysis has already revealed that the asteroid has its own moon: it is being orbited by another smaller piece of rock that is about 2,000 ft across.

About 15% of asteroids that are large are “binary” systems like this.

This celestial event will not be visible to the naked eye, but space enthusiasts with even a modest telescope might be able to witness the pass.

After this, asteroid 1998 QE2 will hurtle back out into deep space; Friday’s visit will be its closest approach for at least two centuries.

Researchers are becoming increasingly interested in potential hazards in space.

So far they have counted more than 9,000 near-Earth asteroids, and they spot another 800 new space rocks on average each year.

Istanbul: Taksim Gezi Park protesters attacked by police with tear gas and water cannon

Turkish police have used tear gas and water cannon against protesters occupying Gezi Park in central Istanbul.

Scores of people have suffered injuries, several of them when a wall collapsed during a police chase.

Demonstrators had been camping since Monday in Gezi Park, angry at plans to develop it as part of a revamp of Taksim Square, in which it is situated.

Many protesters also expressed discontent with the government of PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been in power since 2002 and some in Turkey feel that his government is becoming increasingly authoritarian.

Last week, Turkey’s parliament approved legislation restricting the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

The regulations would prohibit retail sales between 22:00 and 06:00, ban all alcohol advertising and promotion, and stop new shops and bars from opening within 100 m (330 ft) of schools and mosques.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wanted to stop young Turks from “wandering about in a state of inebriation” and was not trying to impose Islamic values.

The prime minister’s Justice and Development (AK) Party has its roots in political Islam, but he says he is committed to Turkey’s state secularism.

Opponents to Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s plans to re-develop Gezi Park say it is one of the few green areas left in central Istanbul.

One banner at Friday’s protest included a cartoon of Recep Tayyip Erdogan dressed as an Ottoman sultan with the slogan: “The people will not bow down to you.”

“We do not have a government, we have Tayyip Erdogan,” political scientist and protester Koray Caliskan told the Reuters news agency.

“They are not listening to us,” he added.

“This is the beginning of a summer of discontent.”

Hurriyet Daily News reported that seven of those wounded in the clashes with police had serious injuries, including a broken leg and head injuries.

A journalist was hit in the head with a tear-gas canister and Hurriyet‘s own photographer was injured, it added.

Amnesty International condemned the use of what it called “excessive force” against “peaceful protesters”.

Probiotics could prevent diarrhoea during antibiotic treatment

0

People who are taking antibiotics may benefit from taking probiotics at the same time, a review of evidence shows.

Scientists at the organization Cochrane Collaboration say taking the supplements could prevent diarrhoea – a common side-effect of many antibiotics.

They looked specifically at cases of diarrhoea caused by the potentially dangerous Clostridium difficile bug.

Experts say probiotics could be a “pre-emptive strike” to ensure a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut.

Antibiotics can disturb the ecosystem of organisms normally present in the digestive system, allowing bacteria such as C. difficile to overwhelm the gut.

And people infected with the bug can suffer from diarrhoea, an inflamed and painful bowel or even death.

People who are taking antibiotics may benefit from taking probiotics at the same time
People who are taking antibiotics may benefit from taking probiotics at the same time

Researchers worldwide have been investigating whether probiotics – cocktails of micro-organisms – can keep gut bacteria in check by competing with more harmful bugs.

Scientists from the independent Cochrane Collaboration looked at data from 23 trials involving 4,213 patients who were on antibiotic treatment for a variety of reasons.

The researchers found 2% of patients given probiotics developed C. difficile-associated diarrhoea compared with 6% of patients who were taking placebos.

The authors suggest probiotics could be particularly useful when there are outbreaks of C. difficile.

Dr. Bradley Johnston, part of the Cochrane team, said: “Implementing the appropriate dose and strains of probiotics in hospitals could provide cost savings and improve quality of life.”

And the review showed that people taking probiotics had fewer unwanted side-effects than those on placebos, including stomach cramps, nausea and taste disturbances.

The authors say more work needs to be done to to pinpoint exactly which types of probiotics work best.

And though probiotics were seen to prevent diarrhoea associated with the bug, they note they did not prevent infections with C. difficile.

They suggest this property needs further investigation to help them understand more about how probiotics work.

What is Avandia and why are Glaxosmithkline facing legal claims for its damaging effects?

0

Express Solicitors have begun legal proceedings against British pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline after a number of individuals have been seriously affected by the drug Avandia.

The diabetes drug Avandia was first introduced on to the NHS in the year 2000 and was used primarily to treat people with type 2 diabetes whose glucose levels were not being kept properly under control by the everyday, already in use drugs – a sulphonylurea drug and metformin. Avandia was created to lessen the body’s resistance towards insulin and could be used alone or together with metformin, which is also known as Avandamet.

The drug was banned in 2010 after ten years, due to very serious health concerns surrounding it. The health concerns connected with the drug were issues such as heart failure and heart attacks after a US scientist carried out clinical trials on 28,000 different people.

GSK (a company who produces and sells a large range of prescription and over the counter medicines) faces legal action due to a number of instances where the drug Avandia was prescribed to patients eight weeks subsequent to the European medicines regulator ordering it to be removed. The pharmaceutical firm also admitted to covering up any data which showed the drugs damaging side effects.
The National Health Service is too facing difficulties of the same sort for the marketing and sale of the drug even after its ban in Europe.

Since the discovery of Avandia’s side effects, thousands of families have come forward demanding compensation for the death or harm of a close relative but only the US claimants have prevailed. GSK have agreed since to pay out billions of dollars to the US government to cover and settle any claims from people in the US.

However, despite the pharmaceutical company being of British origin, UK families may not be quite as well off, as GSK are not prepared to pay out without a fight to defend themselves. Whilst claimants in the US got it relatively easy, fighters in the UK will be faced with having to produce evidence such as medical expert opinions and reports to stand up in court.

Express Solicitors in Manchester are at present representing four families, with a further 15 on its books and are offering a “no win, no fee” basis for anyone affected by the drug.

Oscar Pistorius bathroom photos emerge to media

0

The bathroom where Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead by Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been pictured for the first time.

The pictures show inside Oscar Pistorius’ house in Pretoria, South Africa, where Reeva Steenkamp was killed in the early hours of Valentine’s Day.

Big spots of bl**d cover the toilet and floor of the room, with police tape marking the holes where bullets flew through the bathroom door, which is missing a panel.

It is thought that the low position of the bullet holes will be used by Oscar Pistorius’ defense team to argue that he was not wearing his prosthetic legs at the time of the shooting, so could not have planned the murder.

Oscar Pistorius, 26, claims he shot Reeva Steenkamp, 29, by accident because he believed a burglar had entered their home while they slept.

The pictures, obtained by Sky News, also show trails of bl**d leading from the bathroom and down the stairs of the house, from Oscar Pistorius carrying Reeva Steenkamp’s body as he called for help.

In one poignant scene, a Valentine’s gift for Oscar Pistorius, 26, from his girlfriend remains unopened.

A card bearing the nickname “Ozzy” and a packet of heart-shaped sweets lie on top of a parcel wrapped in striped paper.

Oscar Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder for the shooting of his model girlfriend.

He is due in court on Tuesday for a brief hearing while the police investigation continues.

The Sky footage also shows bl**died footprints – thought to have been caused by investigating officer Hilton Botha walking into the house without protective covers on his shoes.

The investigation into Reeva Steenkamp’s death has been heavily criticized.

Officer Hilton Botha was then forced to step down when it emerged he faced seven charges of attempted murder for a 2011 case in which he and two other officers fired on a vehicle in an attempt to make it stop.

Sources told Sky News that other officers in the case are being investigated for the disappearance of a watch belonging to Oscar Pistorius.

Today, his uncle Arnold Pistorius described what life is like for the athlete while he waits for his trial to begin.

He told CNN: “He is housebound. He doesn’t go out in public places.

“But he’s not keen to go out. This fits him at the moment.

“He’s got photos [of Reeva Steenkamp] in his room, he’s got photos all over the places.

“If the person you love the most died and you were the instrument, how would you feel? It’s unthinkable.

“[His life] won’t be the same again. He will have to cope with it somehow.”

Earlier this week, Oscar Pistorius was fined about $95,000 for not paying his taxes in South Africa.

The fine came after he was forced to declare his assets during his bail hearing in February.

Oscar Pistorius declared in an affidavit during his application that he earned around $660,000 a year and owned three houses and land in South Africa with a combined value of nearly $950,000.

Media reports in South Arica suggested that he also owned another property, in Johannesburg, which was bought for around $950,000 this year.

That house was not declared as part of his assets in his affidavit.

Eurozone unemployment rate hits another record high in April 2013

According to official figures, eurozone unemployment rate has reached another record high in April 2013.

The seasonally-adjusted rate for April 2013 was 12.2%, up from 12.1% the month before.

An extra 95,000 people were out of work in the 17 countries that use the euro, taking the total to 19.38 million.

Both Greece and Spain have jobless rates above 25%. The lowest unemployment rate is in Austria at 4.9%.

The European Commission’s statistics office, Eurostat, said Germany had an unemployment rate of 5.4% while Luxembourg’s was 5.6%.

The highest jobless rates are in Greece (27.0% in February 2013), Spain (26.8%) and Portugal (17.8%).

In France, Europe’s second largest economy, the number of jobless people rose to a new record high in April.

“We do not see a stabilization in unemployment before the middle of next year,” said Frederik Ducrozet, an economist at Credit Agricole in Paris.

“The picture in France is still deteriorating.”

Eurozone unemployment rate has reached another record high in April 2013

Youth unemployment remains a particular concern. In April, 3.6 million people under the age of 25 were out of work in the eurozone, which translated to an unemployment rate of 24.4%.

Figures from the Italian government showed 40.5% of young people in Italy are unemployed.

“We have to deal with the social crisis, which is expressed particularly in spreading youth unemployment, and place it at the centre of political action,” said Italy’s President Giorgio Napolitano.

In the 12 months to April, 1.6 million people lost their jobs in the eurozone.

While the jobless figure in the eurozone climbed for the 24th consecutive month, the unemployment rate for the full 27-member European Union remained at 11%.

The eurozone is in its longest recession since it was created in 1999. At 1.4%, inflation is far below the 2% target set by the European Central Bank (ECB).

Consumer spending remains subdued. Figures released on Friday showed that retail sales in Germany fell 0.4% in April compared with the previous month.

Earlier this week, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) predicted that the eurozone economy would contract by 0.6% this year.

According to Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING, in the past, the eurozone has needed economic growth of about 1.5% to create jobs.

Some consider that the ECB needs to do more than simply cutting interest rates to boost economic activity and create jobs.

Earlier this month, the ECB lowered its benchmark interest rate to 0.50% from 0.75%, the first cut in 10 months, and said it was “ready to act if needed” if more measures were required to boost the eurozone’s economic health.

In its report earlier this week, the OECD hinted that the ECB might want to expand quantitative easing (QE) as a measure to encourage stronger growth.

The European Central Bank is due to meet next week.

FIFA approves new racism sanctions

Football teams could be relegated or expelled from competitions for serious incidents of racism after tough new powers were voted in by FIFA.

First or minor offences will result in either a warning, fine or order for a match to be played behind closed doors.

Serious or repeat offences can now be punished by a points deduction, expulsion or relegation.

Jeffrey Webb, head of FIFA’s anti-racism task force, said the decision was “a defining moment”.

He added: “Our football family is fully aware that what is reported in the media is actually less than 1% of the incidents that happen around the world.

“We’ve got to take action so that when we look to the next 20 or 50 years this will be the defining time that we took action against racism and discrimination.”

FIFA, world football’s governing body, passed the anti-racism resolution with a 99% majority at its congress in Mauritius.

Jeffrey Webb said of the vote against the measures: “I would like to think it was a mistake but I’m glad it wasn’t the other way. I’m glad only 1% went that way.”

Nonetheless, FIFA president Sepp Blatter accepted more must be done to eradicate racism.

Football teams could be relegated or expelled from competitions for serious incidents of racism after tough new powers were voted in by FIFA

He said: “We need zero tolerance and strict punishments everywhere. We must lead. We must set a tough, uncompromising example.

“We can make a difference. We can send a strong signal to the racists that their time is up.”

FIFA commissioned a task force to address the issue of racism after a friendly game between AC Milan and Pro Patria was abandoned due to racist chanting.

Their verdict includes putting an official inside the stadium to identify potential acts of racism and ease the pressure on the match referee.

The new rulings standardise punishment across the members, meaning federations will lose the power to impose their own judgements.

Further to the regulations that relate to clubs or international teams, the new measures will see any individual who commits a racist offence banned from stadiums for a minimum of five matches.

The five-match suspension is one that has been introduced by the Football Association, whose chairman David Bernstein sat on the task force in Mauritius.

Also on the task force was Kevin-Prince Boateng, the AC Milan player who led the walk-off in the game against Pro Patria in January.

Former England international striker Luther Blissett, an ambassador for anti-racism charity Show Racism The Red Card, admitted to reservations about the new measures.

Kim Kardashian cooking special meal for Kanye West

Kim Kardashian claims she was cooking a special meal for her “babe” Kanye West.

In the kitchen at her Beverly Hills home, Kim Kardashian, 32, was making a surprise dinner for the father of her unborn child.

On the menu was Kim Kardashian’s soul food, consisting of fried chicken, sweet potato souffle, green beans, mac ‘n’ cheese and her mother Kris Jenner’s brownies for dessert.

Looking camera ready in a very low-cut dress, Kim Kardashian addressed her fans in a bubbly Keek video in which she demonstrated the cooking of the meal.

“Hi Keekers I am making my famous soul food meal for my babe,” she explained.

“I am making fried chicken, sweet potato souffle, green beans, mac ‘n cheese and my mom made her brownies.

“He is going to be so surprised!”

The special surprise meal comes as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have often been separated while Kanye has been based in Paris, France for the last few months.

Kim Kardashian recently visited Kanye West in the romantic city, however they spent much of her trip there apart.

Instead of a romantic reunion in the city, Kim Kardashian spent time with her mother Kris Jenner after the rapper skipped off to Milan to be with friends.

Kanye West has recently returned to Los Angeles but has yet to be spotted with Kim Kardashian.

Kim Kardashian’s dinner comes just days before she is set to celebrate the impending birth of her first baby with a lavish baby shower.

It was also claimed that Kim Kardashian begged Kanye West to attend the upcoming shower because it is being filmed for an E! special.

Kim Kardashian – who is expecting her first child in July with the 35-year-old rapper – is eager for him to make an appearance at the bash, even though he wants nothing to do with her reality TV show.

Nathaniel Richardson: Texas Army veteran quizzed over ricin letters sent to Barack Obama and Michael Bloomberg

Nathaniel Richardson, a Texas Army veteran, is being questioned in connection with poison letters sent to President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg after his wife found a container in their refrigerator filled with what appeared to be ricin.

Father-of-five Nathaniel Richardson is a civilian employee of the Department of Defense who works at the Red River Army Depot. Sources said he is being treated as a person of interest.

His wife, actress Shannon Glass, told officers that as well as the container in the fridge, she also found internet searches related to ricin production, Barack Obama and Michael Bloomberg on their computer.

The development comes two days after it emerged that Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his anti-gun group were sent two ricin-laced letters. On Thursday, it was revealed that another, identical letter was sent to President Barack Obama.

Nathaniel Richardson, 37, was taken into police custody but has not been arrested. He is not considered a suspect at this time, reports the New York Post.

Neighbors said he worked at the Red River Army Depot, which was once used as an ammunition storage facility, and which now repairs Humvees and other military vehicles.

Shannon Glass, 35, is a model and actress who has had small roles in The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead. She is pregnant with her sixth child.

It comes after one of the ricin-tainted letters intended for Michael Bloomberg was pictured for the first time.

The envelope shows the letter, posted on May 20, was postmarked at Shreveport, Louisiana, where other letters intended for Mayor Michael Bloomberg and President Barack Obama were also handled.

Sources said that Nathaniel Richardson has connections to Shreveport. The city’s postal center handles mail from Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas, KSLA reported.

The typed threat in the letter, splattered with the poisonous substance, is also shown. It tells the pro-gun control mayor: “You will have to kill me and my family before you get my guns.

“Anyone wants to come to my house will be shot in the face. The right to bear arms is my constitutional God-given right and I will exercise that right ’til the day I die.

“What’s in this letter is nothing compared to what I’ve got planned for you.”

The letter sent to Barack Obama contained the same chilling text, sources said on Thursday.

Army veteran Nathaniel Richardson is being questioned in connection with poison letters sent to Barack Obama and Michael Bloomberg
Army veteran Nathaniel Richardson is being questioned in connection with poison letters sent to Barack Obama and Michael Bloomberg

The letter to the president was received at a mail screening facility and did not reach the White House, law enforcement sources told NBC4.

One of the letters sent to Michael Bloomberg was retrieved at the City Hall, and the second arrived at the headquarters of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which Bloomberg operates and personally finances.

They contained threats warning him to stay away from the gun laws debate, authorities said.

NYPD officials said the threatening letters were opened on Friday in New York at the city’s mail facility and on Sunday in Washington at the headquarters of the nonprofit.

Three members of the NYPD fell ill after being exposed to the letters, which contained a “pink, orange oily substance”, authorities said. Their symptoms have since subsided.

Michael Bloomberg, speaking Friday on his weekly WOR Radio show, shrugged off any specter of danger.

“There’s always threats, unfortunately. That comes with the job,” he said.

“I trust the police department and I feel perfectly safe. I’ve got more danger from lightning than from anything else and I’ll go about my business.”

On Wednesday, he said it would not scare him away from engaging in the debate over gun laws.

“There’s 12,000 people that are going to get killed this year with guns and 19,000 that are going to commit suicide with guns, and we’re not going to walk away from those efforts,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

“And I know I speak for all of the close to 1,000 mayors in Mayors Against Illegal Guns,” he said.

“This is a scourge on the country that we just have to make sure that we get under control and eliminate.”

It is not yet known why it took the FBI and the NYPD five days to announce the discovery.

The matter is being investigated by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force which said that the letter sent to Manhattan for billionaire Michael Bloomberg arrived at 100 Gold Street – the home of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Both the New York and Washington D.C. notes were addressed to Michael Bloomberg and contained threats referencing the debate on gun laws.

The second letter to the mayor was opened by Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, who has not been reported to have fallen ill.

The NYPD confirmed preliminary testing indicated the presence of ricin.

“The FBI has an investigation ongoing and so things like the exact wording and the postmarks, etc. we’re not going to disclose,” NYPD deputy commissioner Paul Browne told WCBS 880.

“It was a pink-orange oily substance that subsequently, in the preliminary tests, indicate the presence of ricin.”

Ricin is a poison found naturally in castor beans.

It’s not clear if the letters were related to other threatening, ricin-laced letters sent to other lawmakers recently.

Authorities are now “in the process of searching to determine if there may be additional letters”, according to the statement.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is an outspoken critic of current gun laws and has campaigned nationally and on Capitol Hill for stricter gun legislation – using his own considerable wealth to fund commercials.

The confirmation of ricin present in both letters came through on Wednesday from the National Bioforensic Analysis Center in Maryland.

Ricin symptoms depend on the amount of exposure and dose received, but within a few hours lead to cough, fever, nausea, tightness in the chest and heavy breathing.

Death follows through fluid buildup in the lungs.

Several ricin-laced letters have been sent to U.S. politicians over the past few months – including one addressed to President Barack Obama in mid-April.

The Shreveport postal hub handles mail from parts of Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas.

A Mississippi man, James Everett Duschke stands accused of making the poison ricin and sending those letters – which also went to Senator Roger Wicker and a Mississippi judge.

Initially, a friend of James Everett Dutschke’s, Paul Kevin Curtis was arrested, but he claimed he had been framed after he was released.

What do the poisoned letters say?

One of the ricin-tainted letters sent to Bloomberg has been pictured. It reads:

“You will have to kill me and my family before you get my guns.

“Anyone wants to come to my house will be shot in the face.

“The right to bear arms is my constitutional God-given right and I will exercise that right ’til the day I die.

“What’s in this letter is nothing compared to what I’ve got planned for you.”

Hailey Baldwin: Stephen Baldwin’s daughter joins her father for After Earth premiere in New York

Stephen Baldwin enjoyed some family time with his daughter Hailey as they walked to the After Earth premiere in New York on Wednesday evening.

Despite wearing high heels that made her even taller that her 5’10” father, 17-year-old Hailey Baldwin didn’t seem to mind walking through the Soho neighborhood as he protectively linked her arm.

Once they arrived at the star-studded event, Hailey Baldwin fitted right in on the red carpet in a short graphic print black and white dress, while Stephen Baldwin dressed down in a dark T-shirt and sports coat.

Concerned that it might get cooler as the evening went on, the teenager carried a stylish black leather jacket on her arm along with a neutral clutch purse.

Hailey Baldwin tweeted her excitement about the movie opening that evening, saying: “After Earth premiere later! The getting ready process right now is rough.”

The teen no doubt ditched her father after they arrived to hang out with good friends Kylie Jenner and the film’s young star, Jaden Smith, who she had been out with for lunch earlier that day at Nobu 57.

She was no doubt delighted to rub shoulders with a host of other Hollywood celebrities at the premiere, including Jaden’s father and costar, Will Smith, Bruce Willis, and Justin Bieber.

Dannielynn Birkhead may be entitled to some of J. Howard Marshall’s fortune

Dannielynn Birkhead, the daughter of the late Anna Nicole Smith, may be finally entitled to some of the fortune left by her mother’s late husband, oil billionaire J. Howard Marshall, following a ten-year-long legal battle.

Although Dannielynn Birkhead was declared the sole heir to the estate back in 2008, The Supreme Court had ruled that Anna Nicole Smith’s estate was not entitled to any of J. Howard Marshall’s fortune.

On Thursday however, a Californian judge said that Dannielynn Birkhead, who is now 6-year-old, is entitled to sanctions against J. Howard Marshall’s family, reports TMZ.

Dannielynn Birkhead could now be entitled to up to $49 million of J. Howard Marshall’s fortune, which is estimated to be between $500 million and $1billion.

The judge made their decision based on allegations that attorneys working for J. Howard Marshall’s estate used unsavory tactics through litigation, including concealing crucial legal documents from Anna’s estate lawyers.

Anna Nicole Smith herself went to court after J. Howard Marshall’s death in 1995, claiming he promised to leave her $300 million, even though his will made no mention of her.

After Anna Nicole Smith died from a d**g overdose in 2007 aged 39, her lawyers argued that the money should go to Dannielynn Birkhead, who was fathered by one of her lovers, Larry Birkhead, 37.

But a federal court later ruled that J. Howard Marshall intended to leave his entire fortune to Pierce Marshall, his son by an earlier marriage.

Anna Nicole Smith married oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall in 1994 when she was just 26, and he was 89.

J. Howard Marshall died a year later.

Meanwhile, Dannielynn Birkhead is growing up to be the spitting image of her mother, who was aged just 39 when she was found dead in a Florida hotel room.

Her father, Larry Birkhead, who was forced to establish paternity in a suit against Anna Nicole Smith’s then partner and lawyer Howard K. Stern, seems to have done an excellent job raising his daughter by himself.

“I see her mom in everything she does,” Larry Birkhead told UsWeekly.

“We were at the Kentucky Derby and she started smiling and posing like her mom would. People ask me to put her in modelling, but I don’t want to push,” Larry Birkhead added.

Ibuprofen and diclofenac can increase risk of heart problems

0

New data suggests that two common painkillers, ibuprofen and diclofenac, can slightly increase the risk of heart problems if taken in high doses for a long time.

People with severe arthritis often take the drugs, which also calm inflammation, to go about daily life.

The researchers said some patients would deem the risk acceptable, but they should be given the choice.

A study, published in the Lancet, showed the drugs posed even greater risks for smokers and the overweight.

The risks have been reported before, but a team of researchers at the University of Oxford analyzed the issue in unprecedented detail in order to help patients make an informed choice.

The group investigated more than 353,000 patient records from 639 separate clinical trials to assess the impact of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

They looked at high-dose prescriptions levels, rather than over-the-counter pain relief, of 150 mg diclofenac or 2,400 mg ibuprofen each day.

They showed that for every 1,000 people taking the drugs there would be three additional heart attacks, four more cases of heart failure and one death as well cases of stomach bleeding – every year as a result of taking the drugs.

Common painkillers ibuprofen and diclofenac can slightly increase the risk of heart problems if taken in high doses for a long time

So the number of heart attacks would increase from eight per 1,000 people per year normally, to 11 per 1,000 people per year with the drugs.

“Three per thousand per year sounds like it is quite a low risk, but the judgement has to be made by patients,” said lead researcher Prof. Colin Baigent.

He added: “So if you’re a patient and you go and sit in front of your doctor and discuss it, you are the one who should be making the judgement about whether three per thousand per year is worth it to allow you, potentially, to go about your daily life.”

He said this should not concern people taking a short course of these drugs, for example for headaches.

However, he did warn that those already at risk of heart problems would be at even greater risk as a result of the high-dose drugs.

High blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking all increase the risk of heart problems.

Prof. Colin Baigent said: “The higher your risk of heart disease, the higher your risk of a complication. Roughly speaking, if you’ve got double the risk of heart disease, then the risk of having a heart attack is roughly doubled.”

He said patients should consider ways to reduce their risk, which could include statins for some patients.

A similar drug called rofecoxib (known as Vioxx), was voluntarily taken off the market by its manufacturer in 2004 after similar concerns were raised.

A third drug, naproxen, had lower risks of heart complications in the study and some doctors are prescribing this to higher-risk patients.

The drug does a similar job to aspirin by stopping the blood from clotting although this also increases the odds of a stomach bleed.

Ibragim Todashev autopsy photos revealed by his father at Moscow press conference

Abdul-Baki Todashev, father of Ibragim Todashev, who was shot by an FBI agent a week ago while being quizzed over his links to the Boston bombers, revealed the extent of his son’s injuries in photographs of his dead body today.

Abdul-Baki Todashev called for an investigation and possible legal action against the agent involved at a press conference in Moscow where he showed the images of his son’s body lying in a morgue with up to seven gunshot wounds, including one to the back of the head.

His angry calls for justice came as a report claimed the 27-year-old native Chechen was unarmed in the clash with a federal agent in Florida on May 22.

Previous reports claimed the US citizen went for the agent with a knife while being interrogated in his home.

However, a report by the Washington Post yesterday cited law enforcement officials saying he had no weapon.

Ibragim Todashev allegedly did become violent when police quizzed him over links to Tamerlan Tsarnaev and an unsolved 2011 triple homicide but he did not have a knife as previously claimed.

“Today I want justice. I want an investigation, so that these people [the FBI] are sued under US laws,” Abdul-Baki Todashev said.

“These are not FBI agents. These are bandits and they must appear in court.”

Abdul-Baki Todashev said he received the 16 images of his son’s body from a friend in the US.

Ibragim Todashev is pictured lying in a Florida morgue. His father claims they show brutal injuries from up to seven bullets including one to the back of the head.

“This is not a shot that you fire when you come under attack. This is a shot you fire to execute someone,” he said.

“Couldn’t they just handcuff him? At the very least, they could have wounded him in the foot or shoulder. And here he was – killed execution style.”

He added that his son must have had information they didn’t want him to reveal.

“They silenced him,” he added.

Abdul-Baki Todashev now plans to journey to the US to pick up his son’s body and said he had been to the US embassy in Moscow to apply for a visa to do so.

Authorities were pressuring Ibragim Todashev to make a full confession to the murders of three men found in an apartment in Waltham, Massachusetts on the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001.

It is known Tamerlan Tsarnaev was close friends with one of the victims and the FBI have been looking into whether he was involved.

Law enforcement sources told NBC that Ibragim Todashev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev carried out the 2011 killings when a drug deal that turned violent. The suspects didn’t want the three victims to be able to identify them, so they slit their throats, according to the network.

It is that evidence which apparently led them to Ibragim Todashev and his Orlando apartment not far from Universal Studios on May 22.

He had questioned for some hours before he allegedly flipped and the shooting came as one agent stepped out of the room, leaving Ibragim Todashev alone with one officer, the Post said.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is walking, says his mother Zubeidat Tsarnaeva

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has recovered enough to walk, his mother Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said.

In an interview for the Associated Press, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said her son told her in a phone call that he and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed in a police manhunt after the Boston Marathon blasts, were innocent.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, who was shot and injured during the manhunt, is currently being held in a prison hospital.

Last month’s bombings left three people dead and more than 260 others injured.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva told AP that it was the first conversation she had had with her son since he has been held in custody.

He told her he was getting better but was struggling to comprehend what had happened.

“He didn’t hold back his emotions either, as if he were screaming to the whole world: <<What is this? What’s happening?>>” Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said.

“I could just feel that he was being driven crazy by the unfairness that happened to us, that they killed our innocent Tamerlan.”

The Tsarnaev family has continued to claim the men’s innocence in the bomb attacks, which targeted the finishing line of the Boston Marathon on April 15.

The family, who are ethnic Chechen Muslims from Russia, spoke from an apartment in the Russian republic of Dagestan which reportedly belonged to 26-year-old Tamerlan, who was hit in a shoot-out with police in the aftermath of the bombings.

The suspects’ father, Anzor Tsarnaev, said they bought the apartment in anticipation of Tamerlan and his family moving to Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan.

“All I can do is pray to God and hope that one day fairness will win out, our children will be cleared, and we will at least get Dzhokhar back, crippled, but at least alive,” he told AP.

Meanwhile, the father of a Chechen immigrant Ibragim Todashev, who was shot and killed during a violent confrontation with Boston Marathon investigators, has accused agents who killed his son of being “bandits”.

Ibragim Todashev, 27, admitted a role in a triple murder near Boston in 2011 and implicated Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the crime.

However, no evidence has emerged to link Ibragim Todashev to the bombings.

On May 22, he was shot and killed in Orlando, Florida.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, his father, Abdul-Baki Todashev, showed 16 photographs that he said were of his son in a Florida morgue.

He claimed his son had six gunshot wounds to his torso and one to the back of his head. However, the photos have not been authenticated.

There are conflicting reports about the events that led to Ibragim Todashev’s death, with law enforcement officials initially saying he was shot after attacking an FBI agent with a knife but later saying they were not clear about what happened.

Ibragim Todashev’s father says his son was “100% unarmed” and has called for an investigation into his death.

“These are not FBI agents but bandits – I cannot call them anything else and they must be tried,” he said.

His son met Tamerlan Tsarnaev at a boxing gym in Boston in 2011 but they were “not particularly close friends”, Abdul-Baki Todashev adds.

Ricin letter sent to Barack Obama similar to Michael Bloomberg threats

A suspicious letter sent to President Barack Obama was intercepted by the Secret Service.

The Secret Service said the letter was “similar” to two ricin poisoned letters mailed to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg this week and was being tested by FBI investigators.

The letters to Mayor Michael Bloomberg referred to his support for stricter gun control.

One was delivered to the Washington DC office of Michael Bloomberg’s gun control group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

The other was addressed to the New York City mayor’s office but intercepted at a mail sorting facility.

Police have said preliminary testing of the letters sent to Michael Bloomberg indicated the presence of ricin, a poison extracted from castor beans.

One thousand times more toxic than cyanide, it can be fatal when inhaled, swallowed or injected, although it is possible to recover from exposure.

Law enforcement officials have told US media that all three letters were marked as having been sorted in a facility in Shreveport, Louisiana.

A Louisiana State Police spokeswoman said the Shreveport postal centre handled mail from Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas, so the letter could have come from any of those states.

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters on Thursday he believed that the letter addressed to Barack Obama was identical to those sent to Michael Bloomberg.

According to Ray Kelly, the letters contained a threat to “shoot in the face” anyone who came for the sender’s guns.

Civilian personnel who came into contact with the letters experienced no symptoms. Minor symptoms in emergency workers who handled the letter at the sorting facility for the mayor’s office “have since abated”, the New York Police Department said in a statement.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is one of the most prominent proponents of stricter gun control laws in the US.

The firearms debate divides Americans and has leapt to the top of the political agenda since 26 people were killed in a school shooting in Connecticut in December.

In a separate case, a Mississippi man is charged with sending ricin-laced letters to Barack Obama, a judge and a Mississippi senator. Another man has been arrested in Washington state in connection with letters sent to a judge.

Start button back on Windows 8

The Start button is returning to Microsoft desktop mode’s taskbar of its Windows 8 operating system, the company has confirmed.

The lack of the facility – which had been in every previous version since Windows 95 – has been one of the most controversial aspects of the software.

However, it will not offer all the functionality previously associated with the feature.

Instead it will bring users to the recently-introduced “Metro” interface.

“We’ve improved the way you navigate to Start with the mouse by changing the Start ‘tip’ to be the familiar Windows logo,” the company said in a blog post.

“The new tip appears anytime you move the mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen, and is always visible on the taskbar when on the desktop.”

On current versions of Windows 8, the start tip would only appear when users hovered their cursor over the lower-left corner of their screen.

In the 8.1 update, the area will be more visible.

A left-click on the tip will bring up a tile-based Start Screen – formerly known as the Metro interface – designed for touch-screen users.

A right-click will display a small menu of other options such as Event Viewer, Device Manager and Disk Management.

Another change will allow users to boot their computers directly into desktop mode, meaning they can avoid ever using the Start Screen if they wish.

Many users had complained that ditching the traditional Start Menu and introducing the Start Screen had made the system less straight-forward to use, meaning businesses which adopted it would need to retrain staff.

Microsoft had been stung by claims that the expected reintroduction of a Start button would mark a major U-turn.

An article in the Financial Times described the move as one of the “most prominent admissions of failure for a new mass-market consumer product since Coca-Cola’s New Coke fiasco nearly 30 years ago” – making reference to the soft drinks company’s decision to ditch a new recipe after overwhelming customer dissatisfaction.

Microsoft later issued a statement saying it was “unfortunate” the FT did not represent the “good response to date on Windows 8.”

A preview download of Windows 8.1 will be released to the public in June, and a final version before the end of the year. Both will be free of charge to existing users.

Other changes that will appear to users running the update include:

  • Added customization options, with more choice over colours and backgrounds on the Start Screen.
  • An improved search function that covers web content as well as apps, files and settings on the PC.
  • A new version of the firm’s web browser – Internet Explorer 11 – which Microsoft said would offer improved tools for developers.

Wool & Prince shirt: Mac Bishop invents shirt that stays clean even after 100 days of wear

Wool & Prince shirt you can wear 100 days without washing or ironing

Mac Bishop got tired of wearing the same button-down shirts to his job in marketing every day and he has invented a shirt that stays clean even after 100 days of wear.

The garment resists odor so effectively that it even smells fresh after being worn during rigorous exercise.

It is also said to need no ironing because it is made of wrinkle-free material that can withstand even the roughest of treatment.

“They were Brooks Brother cotton, button-downs,” 24-year-old Mac Bishop told FOX 411.

“They wrinkled or smelled after a couple wears and needed cleaning.”

Mac Bishop thought there had to be a better way to meet his office’s dress code without having to take his shirts to the dry cleaner after one use. So, he decided to experiment.

“I had some vintage wool button downs in my closet, and I started wearing those to work. They were more of a flannel, heavier [material]. They got by on the…business casual meter. I started wearing those, and they didn’t wrinkle. They didn’t smell,” he said.

“[I thought] <<This is really cool. I hate doing my dry cleaning, and now I don’t really do any dry cleaning because I am wearing these shirts>>.”

Mac Bishop quit his job and decided to focus on creating a “better-button down.” The idea, he explained, was a shirt made entirely of wool, which was formal enough to wear to work but wouldn’t wrinkle or smell like cotton shirts. Something, he said, the wool shirt market was missing.

“I ended up wearing one of these shirts for 100 days,” he said, explaining the shirt he experimented with came from his family’s woolen mill, in Oregon.

“It performed well. I threw a lot at it,” he said.

After the 100 days, Mac Bishop challenged people to feel and smell the shirt and recorded their reactions. He posted a video of the results on the project-funding website Kickstarter, in the hopes of raising $30,000 to create a business casual shirt out of the same material.

Now, his Wool & Prince fashion label has raised more than $300,000, and he has presold thousands of shirts, priced at $98 each. The label’s website has a waiting list for those hoping to get their hands on one of the low-maintenance shirts.

“It’s an overwhelming amount of hype for not having a completely finished product,” Mac Bishop said, adding the first batch of shirts are being produced in Asia and will ship to buyers in December.

Mac Bishop said those looking for an easier business casual shirt will likely be please with his product, but he still advises wearers wash it… at least every once in a while.

“I don’t recommend that guys wear this shirt for 100 days. I’m not really a smelly guy but I’m pretty active,” he said.

“I think guys can expect to get more wears out of this shirt than their cotton shirts. We’re going to learn a lot about what guys think about the shirt when it ships.”

Wool & Prince sent researchers around the world wearing the shirts doing everything from backpacking in the Andes to dancing in sweaty New York nightclubs to test their design.

The shirts are made of wool which lasts six times longer than cotton. Laboratory tests have shown that wool fibres resist tearing and can bend back on themselves more than 20,000 times without breaking. Cotton breaks after 3,200 bends.

Wool is also highly resilient to wrinkles because it has a natural crimp.

Monica Lewinsky and Erin Moran considered for Celebrity Swan show

Fox is bringing back their most controversial reality makeover The Swan with Monica Lewinsky and Erin Moran being considered for the show.

This time celebrities will undergo the makeover transformations.

According to Today.com, Fox has greenlighted Celebrity Swan to air later this year. The casting process is going on now and Fox will begin production this spring.

Entertainment Weekly reports: “Celebrity Swan will feature female celebrities and will offer these popular women the incredible opportunity to undergo physical, psychological and career changes as cameras follow them through the transformative process. This opportunity will allow these women to come back better than ever, have a second chance at personal and career redemption and re-introduce themselves to their supportive fans in a whole new way.”

Celebrity Swan will be a two-hour special instead of a whole season of one-hour episodes.

The Swan‘s celebrity version is being produced by FremantleMedia and Galan Entertainment with Nely Galan and Arthur Smith serving as executive producers. The producers are just beginning the casting process and no names have officially been announced. Monica Lewinsky and Erin Moran are being considered for the show. Already slimmed down from 300 lb, Monica Lewinsky is in talks to appear on the Fox TV show which turns “ugly ducklings” into “beautiful swans” with cosmetic surgery, dental treatment, counseling and personal training.

Monica Lewinsky 2013: Where is she now?

World’s most famous intern Monica Lewinsky, it seems, is making a return to public life in 2013.

At the beginning of this year Monica Lewinsky was spotted at the birthday party of Heather Kerzner at the Downton Mayfair restaurant. In the company of amongst others the Duchess of York, Princess Eugenie and her former Admiral Codrington barman boyfriend Jack Brooksbank, Donna Air and the Duchess of Cambridge’s brother, James Middleton, the Daily Mail described her as wearing “dark layers with gem-laden accessories”.

Monica Lewinsky was introduced to Heather Kerzner, the former wife of hotel magnate Sol Kerzner, by socialite and actress Amanda Eliasch in August 2012. Amongst others at a party held at the Chateau Marmont were Lisa Zane, Yassi Mazandi, Edward Bennett-Coles and Ronnie Sassoon.

Aside from having plainly found a niche on the social circuits of London and Manhattan, Monica Lewinsky, who has openly admitted that she’s “kind of known for something that’s not so great to be known for”, appeared in a $1 million endorsement campaign for Jenny Craig starting in January 2000. The deal was a disaster and by February of that year, the firm dropped Monica Lewinsky and paid just for $300,000 for her involvement.

On the memoir and interview appearance fee front, Monica Lewinsky has been far more successfully. Andrew Morton’s Monica’s Story is said to have netted her around $500,000 and circa $1 million from the international rights to her 20/20 interview with Barbara Walters on ABC.

In due course, supposedly seeking a more private life, Monica Lewinsky moved to London in 2005 to study social psychology at the London School of Economics. She produced a thesis titled In Search of the Impartial Juror: An Exploration of the Third-person effect and Pre-Trial Publicity.

In September 2012, Forbes magazine revealed that Monica Lewinsky was about to sign a $12 million memoir “detailing her relationship with the first seducer, discussing everything from his sexual peccadilloes to his complaints about wife Hillary”.

Around the same time, a “friend” told the New York Post: “No one will hire her and she can’t get a job because of Clinton.”

In another feature in the National Enquirer, another “friend” added: “She’s facing 40 without a man in her life” as an excuse for why Monica Lewinsky is again peddling her story.

The latest? It’s now being suggested that Bill Clinton’s former lover will appear on a FOX show named The Swan along with Happy Days actress Erin Moran. The programme, last broadcast in 2004, sees participants receive “physical and mental makeovers” including plastic surgery as they prepare to “reinvent themselves”.

Whether the memoirs and reality show go ahead or not, it looks like Monica Lewinsky will be back in London soon. In conclusion, Heather Kerzner told Charlotte Griffiths of the Mail on Sunday’s diary: “It was great to have Monica along – we’re old friends. I’m now organizing the Masterpiece Midsummer Gala in aid of charity on July 2. Hopefully Monica will be able to attend.”

What are the odds of naturally conceiving quintuplets?

0

The odds of naturally conceiving quintuplets are one in several million, according to Dr. Wright Bates, from the University of Alabama.

Dr. Wright Bates told ABC News that quins are “exceedingly rare”.

He said twins are born in up to 1 in every 100 births, while triplets are 1 in every 7,000 to 10,000 births.

Naturally conceived quadruplets are born in every 1 in 600,000 births.

The first recorded set of quintuplets known to have all survived were the Dionne sisters, who were born in Ontario, Canada.

Fewer than 10 sets of quintuplets are born every year in the United States.

Last month, Guillermina and Fernando Garcia had five babies – three girls and two boys – who weighed between 2 to 3 pounds each at the University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City for another six weeks.

In 2010, British mother Vicky Lamb had four girls and two boys after taking a fertility drug but sadly one of the babies died.

Alexandra Kinova: Czech mother pregnant with country’s first naturally conceived quintuplets

Alexandra Kinova from Czech Republic has beaten staggering odds to become pregnant with quintuplets without using IVF.

Alexandra Kinova, 23, is due to give birth by Caesarean section on Sunday to the Czech Republic’s first ever set of quins.

Alexandra Kinova, who already has one son, did not realize she was carrying five babies until last month.

At first doctors said she was having twins but in March staff at the Prague Institute for the Care of Mother and Child said she was actually pregnant with four children.

However, it was not until the following month that she finally discovered she was having quintuplets.

Alexandra Kinova, from Milovice, about 30 km (20 miles) east of Prague, told Czech news site denik.cz that she was in shock when she was told.

She said: “When we finally found a fifth head, I started to cry.”

According to local media, her children will be the country’s first set of quins.

The odds of conceiving quins naturally is one in several million, according to experts.

The mother said both she and her partner have a family history of twins.

Alexandra Kinova said aside from four months of morning sickness, she has had few complications in the pregnancy.

She said she has been able to sleep on her side and has not had any problems with her breathing.

Alexandra Kinova said she plans to breastfeed all five, as she did with her first-born son.

She told denik: “The first child I nursed for almost a year and a half and I want to breastfeed now.

“While I know that some will be on artificial nutrition.”

Alexandra Kinova said despite the best efforts of the doctors they still do not know the gender of all the babies.

Two of the unborn babies are hidden underneath the other three – two boys and a girl, who she plans to call Daniel, Michael and Tereza.

Alexandra Kinova said: “I very much look forward to seeing how they will look. It’s a great charm, but we cannot see anything properly -only a head or legs.”

The hospital will double the number of doctors and midwives for her Caesarean.

They said they have administered drugs to help speed up the development of the babies’ lungs but they cannot be sure of their condition until they are born.

Dr. Alena Měchurová, head of the hospital, said they hope that all five babies and the mother will be fine but said they cannot rule out complications.
