Barack Obama welcomes Ukraine’s interim PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk at White House

Ukraine’s interim PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk met President Barack Obama at the White House.

During their meeting, Barack Obama pledged to “stand with Ukraine” in its dispute with Russia.

The US president warned Russian President Vladimir Putin the international community “will be forced to apply costs” if Russia does not remove its troops from Crimea.

Earlier, leaders of the G7 group of nations issued a similar threat.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, speaking after meeting Barack Obama, said Ukraine “will never surrender” to Russia.

“It is absolutely unacceptable to have Russian boots on the Ukrainian ground in the 21st century, violating all international deals and treaties,” he said.

The diplomatic appeals to Moscow come ahead of Sunday’s referendum in Crimea, in which citizens will be asked if they want to stay with Ukraine or join Russia.

The Russian military and pro-Russian armed men moved in to seize key sites in Crimea – an autonomous region of Ukraine whose population is mainly ethnic Russian – in late February after the fall of President Viktor Yanukovych.

Barack Obama said the US has “been very clear that we consider Russia’s incursion into Crimea outside of its bases to be a violation of international law”.

“We have been very firm in saying we will stand with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in ensuring that territorial integrity and sovereignty is maintained,” he added.

In reference to scheduled talks between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in London on Friday, Barack Obama said he hoped diplomatic efforts will result in a “rethinking of the process”.

But he stressed that if Moscow “continues on the path that it is on then, not only us, but the international community… will be forced to apply a cost to Russia’s violations of international law and its encroachments on Ukraine”.

The president did not specify what those costs would be, but Washington has already issued visa bans to some high-profile Russians and threatened asset freezes for others.

Barack Obama also said the US “will completely reject” the results of Crimea’s referendum, saying it had been put together in a “slapdash” way.

As Barack Obama and Arseniy Yatsenyuk were holding talks, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to authorize $1 billion in loan guarantees to Ukraine’s new government and allow the US to impose sanctions on Russian and Ukrainian officials.

The new drama will mark a return to TV for Olivia Wilde, who played Dr. Remy Hadley in House from 2007 to 2012.

Olivia Wilde recently appeared in Spike Jonze film Her and Ron Howard’s Formula One drama Rush.

Herbalife pyramid scheme investigated by FTC

0

US Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into the operations of nutrition and weight-loss firm Herbalife.

The FTC move follows allegations that the company operates a “pyramid scheme” – making money from recruiting new distributors, rather than sales.

Herbalife has denied these allegations and said it would “cooperate fully” with the FTC inquiry.

Its shares fell by as much as 16%.

But they recovered slightly and ended the day down by 7%.

“Herbalife welcomes the inquiry given the tremendous amount of misinformation in the marketplace,” the company said in a statement.

“We are confident that Herbalife is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.”

The investigation comes just a day after prominent hedge fund manager, William Ackman, renewed his attack on the firm.

William Ackman has been one of Herbalife’s biggest critics and has a $1 billion short sale position on the firm’s stock – betting that the share price will drop.

He first publically accused Herbalife of running a pyramid scheme in 2012.

On Tuesday, William Ackman accused the company’s China business of violating direct-selling laws in the country, something Herbalife denies.

China is one of the fastest growing markets for the firm and its sales there rose 65% in 2013.

Herbalife sells a range of nutritional products across the globe through a network of independent distributors.

It reported revenues of $4.8 billion in 2013, a jump of 18% from the previous year.

The company has got the backing of billionaire investors George Soros and Carl Icahn, who have picked up stakes in the firm.

Herbalife shares have risen by more than 50% over the past 12 months.

Flight MH370: Last message received from missing jet revealed

0

Malaysian authorities have unveiled the last communication received from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

The message suggests everything was normal on board minutes before the plane went missing over the South China Sea.

Flight MH370 replied: “All right, roger that” to a radio message from Malaysian air control, authorities said.

The search has been widened to waters off both sides of the peninsula.

Malaysia’s air force chief has denied reports the plane was tracked to the Malacca Strait in the west.

The China-bound plane went missing on Saturday with 239 people on board.

The plane vanished about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, as it flew over the South China Sea, south of Vietnam’s Ca Mau peninsula. No distress signal or message was sent.

Malaysian authorities revealed the plane’s last communication at a news conference held in Beijing for relatives of the 154 Chinese who are among the missing passengers.

As the plane reached the boundary between Malaysian and Vietnamese airspace, the Malaysian air control announced it was handing over to Ho Chi Minh City Control.

Minutes later, all contact with Flight MH370 was lost.

China’s foreign ministry said there was “too much confusion” regarding the information released about the plane’s flight path.

“It is very hard for us to decide whether a given piece of information is accurate,” spokesman Qin Gang told reporters in Beijing.

Earlier on Wednesday, Malaysia’s air force chief Rodzali Daud denied remarks attributed to him in local media that flight was tracked by military radar to the Malacca Strait, far west of its planned route.

Gen. Rodzali Daud said he “did not make any such statements”, but the air force had “not ruled out the possibility of an air turn-back”.

Early search efforts focused on waters between Malaysia and Vietnam.

The search was later extended to the Malacca Strait and the Andaman Sea, off Malaysia’s west coast, amid reports that the plane could have turned back.

Operations are now covering some 27,000 square nautical miles.

Malaysian authorities on Wednesday requested assistance from India in searching the Andaman Sea, north of the Malacca Strait.

Vietnam has confirmed an investigation into a possible sighting of the plane has so far yielded no results.

Vietnam’s air traffic management earlier said it had received an email from a New Zealander working in one of the oil rigs off Vung Tau.

“He said he spotted a burning [object] at that location, some 300 km [200 miles] southeast of Vung Tau,” deputy general director Doan Huu Gia said.

Officials still do not know what went wrong with the aircraft, and several leads pursued so far have proven not to be linked to the plane.

G7 calls on Russia to stop efforts to annex Crimea

The G7 leaders have called on Russia to stop all efforts to “annex” Ukraine’s Crimea region.

G7 said if Russia took such a step they would “take further action, individually and collectively”.

They also said they would not recognize the results of a referendum in Crimea this weekend on whether to split from Ukraine and join Russia.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s national security chief has warned of a major Russian military build-up on Ukraine’s borders.

Andriy Parubiy said Moscow had not withdrawn its troops after carrying out military exercises near Ukraine’s eastern and southern frontiers last month.

The Group of Seven industrial nations – Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US – along with the EU urged Russia to “cease all efforts to change the status of Crimea”.

G7 said Crimea's referendum has no legal effect as it is in direct violation of Ukraine's constitution
G7 said Crimea’s referendum has no legal effect as it is in direct violation of Ukraine’s constitution

“In addition to its impact on the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea could have grave implications for the legal order that protects the unity and sovereignty of all states,” they said in a statement released by the White House.

They said Sunday’s referendum, asking the people of Crimea if they want to be a part of Russia or Ukraine, has “no legal effect” as it is in “direct violation” of Ukraine’s constitution.

“Given the lack of adequate preparation and the intimidating presence of Russian troops, it would also be a deeply flawed process which would have no moral force.”

The leaders repeated their calls for Russia to de-escalate the crisis by withdrawing its troops, talking directly with Kiev and using international mediators to “address any legitimate concerns it may have”.

US Secretary of State John Kerry says he has been asked by President Barack Obama to travel to London for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday.

“Our job is to present them with a series of options that are appropriate in order to try to respect the people of Ukraine, international law and the interests of all concerned,” John Kerry told the House Appropriations Committee on Foreign Operations.

All train services in and out of Grand Central terminal have been halted following the incident near its tracks.

The New York fire department has elevated the incident to the highest threat level possible and dispatched 168 members from more than three dozen nearby fire stations to battle the blaze.

The local utility has been called to shut off the gas following the explosion, which damaged windows in the area, reports WABC TV.

A witness told the New York Daily News she had smelled gas “for weeks” before the explosion.

Berkin Elvan funeral brings thousands of protesters to Istanbul streets

The funeral of Berkin Elvan – a teenage boy injured during Istanbul anti-government protests last year – has gathered tens of thousands of people on the streets of Turkey’s biggest city.

Berkin Elvan, 15, spent 269 days in a coma before his death on Tuesday.

Many of the protesters echoed his mother’s claim that Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan was Berkin’s “killer”.

Police in the capital Ankara fired tear gas to disperse several thousand protesters who had gathered in the central Kizilay square.

Berkin Elvan was 14 when he was struck on the head by a tear gas canister while going to buy bread during last year’s unrest.

“Berkin’s murderers are the AKP police,” protesters shouted in Istanbul, referring to PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The crowds, shouting anti-government slogans, lit a huge fire as they made their way to a cemetery for the burial of the teenager.

“The rage of mothers will suffocate the killers,” screamed others.

Berkin Elvan’s death triggered violent protests in at least 32 towns and cities across the country on Tuesday – reminiscent of last year’s unrest.

President Abdullah Gul expressed his sadness and appealed for calm, urging everyone “to do everything to prevent this from happening again”.

He said Turkey was going through difficult days and that the “mind of the state has become overwhelmed by anger and hatred.”

The president added: “Little 15-year-old Berkin Elvan is the latest victim of this atmosphere.”

Correspondents say Berkin Elvan became a symbol of the heavy-handed tactics used by police to rein in the biggest demonstrations against the prime minister.

His death brought the toll from last year’s unrest to at least eight, including one policeman.

Berkin’s mother, Gulsum Elvan, had challenged Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who praised police “heroism” during the protests.

“It’s not God who took my son away but prime minister Erdogan,” the tearful mother told reporters on Tuesday.

The renewed unrest is likely to add to pressure on Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose government has been rocked by an escalating corruption scandal ahead of elections that could decide his fate.

Gulnara Karimova: Switzerland probes Uzbek president’s daughter for money laundering

Swiss prosecutors have opened a money laundering investigation into Gulnara Karimova, the eldest daughter of Uzbekistan’s President Islam Karimov.

The public prosecutor said in a statement that Gulnara Karimova is now part of an inquiry already looking at alleged wrongdoing involving four Uzbeks linked to her.

The investigation involves the business activities of a Swedish telecoms firm.

Gulnara Karimova, 41, had her diplomatic immunity lifted last year when she lost her post as Uzbek envoy to the UN.

A flamboyant businesswoman as well as a pop star in her home country, Gulnara Karimova is believed to have broad commercial interests in the Central Asian republic, ruled by her father for more than two decades.

The public prosecutor revealed on Wednesday that Gulnara Karimova had been under investigation since September 2013 and that her villa in Cologny, just outside Geneva, had been searched by police the previous month, a few weeks after her immunity was lifted.

Gulnara Karimova is believed to have left Geneva after her role as permanent UN ambassador there came to an end.

Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber told Geneva daily Le Temps that Gulnara Karimova’s diplomatic immunity had previously prevented any action from taking place.

A sum of 800 million Swiss francs ($910 million) has been frozen as part of the inquiry, although the origin of the money is not yet clear, officials say. Several searches have also taken place in France.

Four Uzbek nationals have been under investigation since the summer of 2012. Two were held in custody but released a few months later.

Swedish-Finnish company TeliaSonera, which is partly state-owned, was accused in a 2012 Swedish TV report of paying an intermediary company, Takilant, $300 million for 3G mobile phone rights in Uzbekistan.

Although TeliaSonera strongly denied any wrongdoing, the case was taken up by Swedish prosecutors.

The Swiss authorities did not name TeliaSonera in their statement but said their Swedish colleagues were involved in a corruption inquiry linked to various acquisitions made by a “Swedish enterprise” in the Uzbek telecoms market.

A few months ago, Gulnara Karimova denied any involvement in the TeliaSonera case.

Angelina Jolie will have more cancer-preventing surgery

Angelina Jolie will have more cancer-preventing surgery, after a double mastectomy last year, the actress confirmed in a recent interview.

Angelina Jolie, 38, had the procedure after discovering she was at high risk of developing breast cancer.

“I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could,” she said at the time.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Angelina Jolie said she is “very happy” with her decision to have the operation.

“There’s still another surgery to have, which I haven’t yet. I’ll get advice from all these wonderful people who I’ve been talking to, to get through that next stage,” she said.

“I was very fortunate to have great doctors and very, very fortunate to have a good recovery and have a project like Unbroken to have something to be really focused on, to be getting healthy for, and to be able to just get right back to work.”

Angelina Jolie has previously explained her reasons for having the surgery, arguing she needed to minimize her risk after her mother died from ovarian cancer aged 56.

Doctors estimated Angelina Jolie had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer, because of genes she had inherited.

Oscar Pistorius trial day 8: Bathroom door account contradicted by forensic expert

Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius was not wearing his prostheses when he broke down a door to reach Reeva Steenkamp after he shot her, his murder trial has heard on the eighth day.

The forensic evidence contradicted Oscar Pistorius’ claim that he was wearing prosthetics at the time.

The door has been brought into court to be examined during the murder trial.

Oscar Pistorius denies intentionally killing Reeva Steenkamp on February 14 last year, saying he fired after mistaking her for a burglar.

A replica of the toilet in which Reeva Steenkamp was shot has been also brought into court.

The court will hear forensic evidence on the location of shooter, the grouping of the shots and their trajectory.

Cross-examining, Oscar Pistorius’ defense team asked the forensic expert to kneel on his knees and lift his feet, which caused him to wobble.

The defense team claimed that Mr Pistorius therefore would not have been able to balance on his stumps and break down the door using a cricket bat.

The prosecution witness argued that if Oscar Pistorius, 27, was balanced enough to fire a gun, he could also break down a door with a bat.

The trial is now halfway through its second week, and is expected to feature over 100 witnesses.

Earlier on Wednesday, a friend of Oscar Pistorius claimed that the star had driven at 124mph and that he had taken a picture of the speedometer to prove it.

The defense team alleged that Darren Fresco was himself driving at the time and had therefore fabricated evidence.

The state is seeking to convince the court that Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, and reality TV star, had an argument before the athlete fired the shots that killed her.

Flight MH370: Confusion over missing Malaysia Airlines plane’s last known location deepens

0

According to new reports, confusion over missing Malaysia Airlines plane’s last known location has deepened.

Malaysia’s air force chief has denied reports that the plane was tracked to the Malacca Strait in the west.

Now, search teams are scouring waters off both sides of the Malaysian peninsula.

Vietnam has dispatched a plane to investigate an eyewitness report of a possible object burning in the sky east of Vietnam.

Flight MH370 went missing on Saturday. It had 239 people on board.

Authorities have been searching for the plane, which disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, for the past five days.

Earlier this week, Malaysia widened the search for the missing plane amid conflicting reports on its last known position.

The Malaysian authorities initially said flight MH370 disappeared about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, as it flew over the South China Sea, south of Vietnam’s Ca Mau peninsula. No distress signal or message was sent.

Early search efforts focused on waters between Malaysia and Vietnam.

The search was later extended to the Malacca Strait and the Andaman Sea, off Malaysia’s west coast, amid reports that the plane could have turned back.

On Wednesday, Malaysia’s air force chief Rodzali Daud denied remarks attributed to him in local media that a missing Malaysia Airlines plane was tracked by military radar to the Malacca Strait, far west of its planned route.

Gen. Rodzali Daud said he “did not make any such statements”, but the air force had “not ruled out the possibility of an air turn-back”.

On Wednesday, authorities also began searching the Andaman Sea, north of the Malacca Strait.

“We are not going to leave any chance. We have to look at every possibility,” Malaysian civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told AFP news agency, without indicating why the search was expanded north.

Malaysia had requested assistance from India in searching areas near the Andaman Sea, India’s foreign ministry said.

Meanwhile, Vietnam said it had deployed aircraft to investigate a possible sighting of the plane.

Doan Huu Gia, deputy general director of Vietnam’s air traffic management, said: “We received an email from a New Zealander who works on one of the oil rigs off Vung Tau.

“He said he spotted a burning [object] at that location, some 300 km southeast of Vung Tau.”

Officials still do not know what went wrong with the aircraft, and several leads pursued so far have proven not to be linked to the plane.

At least 40 ships and 34 aircraft from several different countries are taking part in the search for the plane.

Two-thirds of the passengers on board the plane were Chinese. Some were from a range of other Asian countries, North America or Europe.

Oleksandr Turchynov: Russian government rejects Ukraine crisis talks

Russian government is refusing all negotiations with Ukraine, Ukrainian acting President Oleksandr Turchynov has said.

Oleksandr Turchynov told AFP news agency that Ukraine would not intervene militarily in Crimea, even though a secession referendum there was a “sham”.

Meanwhile interim PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk is travelling to the US to meet President Barack Obama.

On Thursday Arseniy Yatsenyuk is due to address the UN Security Council in New York.

“We cannot launch a military operation in Crimea, as we would expose the eastern border [close to Russia] and Ukraine would not be protected,” Oleksandr Turchynov told AFP.

Ukraine would not intervene militarily in Crimea, even though a secession referendum there was a sham

He said that Sunday’s referendum in Crimea – in which people on the peninsula will decide whether or not to become part of Russia – was “a provocation” that would be boycotted by most people.

“The Russian forces don’t intend to hold a referendum, they’re just going to falsify the results,” he said.

Oleksandr Turchynov said that at the same time the Russian government was refusing to enter into any dialogue with Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, for now Russia is rejecting a diplomatic solution to the conflict,” he told AFP.

Oleksandr Turchynov earlier on Tuesday called for the creation of a national guard and provide support to troops.

He said that the force would include volunteers with military experience who would be on guard against external and internal aggression.

Oleksandr Turchynov was speaking as Moscow announced more military exercises involving 4,000 paratroopers – apparently the biggest such exercise in 20 years.

Michael Schumacher shows encouraging signs in his fight for recovery

Michael Schumacher has been showing “small, encouraging signs” in his fight for recovery, the Formula 1 champion’s family says.

“We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up,” the relatives said in a statement.

Doctors in France have been working to bring the seven-time champion out of a medically induced coma.

Michael Schumacher, 45, suffered a severe head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps on 29 December.

He has been kept in a coma to help reduce the swelling in his brain.

On Wednesday, Michael Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, released a statement on behalf of his family because of “an increasing interest in [his] condition in light of the start of the Formula 1 season”.

The family praised the efforts of the French doctors at Grenoble hospital, but also warned this was “a time to be very patient”.

“It was clear from the start that this will be a long and hard fight for Michael,” the statement read.

Investigators probing the accident said Michael Schumacher had been going at the speed of “a very good skier” at the time of his crash in the resort of Meribel.

He had been skiing off-piste when he fell and hit a rock, investigators said.

Experts reconstructed events leading up to the crash after examining Michael Schumacher’s skiing equipment and viewing footage filmed on a camera attached to his helmet.

Michael Schumacher retired from racing in 2012 after a 19-year career.

Barack Obama on Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis

President Barack Obama has been interviewed by comedian Zach Galifianakis for his spoof chat show Between Two Ferns.

Barack Obama joined Zach Galifianakis in a bid to encourage young people to sign up for health insurance.

The president was asked about sending “Ambassador Dennis Rodman” to North Korea and outlawing gay divorce.

Barack Obama was also billed on-screen as a “community organizer”.

Streamed on the Funny or Die, the notoriously awkward chat show takes place on a sparse set, decorated with two fern plants.

Barack Obama started on the offensive, declaring: “When I heard that people actually watch this show, I was actually pretty surprised.”

“What is it like to be the last black president?” retorted Zach Galifianakis.

“What’s it like for this to be the last time you ever talk to a president?” Barack Obama replied.

“It must kind of stink, though, that you can’t run three times?” the comedian continued.

Barack Obama replied: “If I ran a third time it would be like doing a third Hangover movie. It didn’t really work out very well, did it?”

He then praised Zach Galifianakis’ previous interviews, especially one featuring his Hangover co-star Bradley Cooper, which ended with the pair slapping each other.

“That was a great show. He probably carried that movie didn’t he?” said Barack Obama.

The Between Two Ferns series, which began in 2008, has become a cult hit online.

A typical recent video, which featured Zach Galifianakis whipping singer Justin Bieber with a belt for his bad behavior, was watched by 16 million people.

Zach Galifianakis and Barack Obama sparred for three-and-a-half minutes before the president revealed his real motive for appearing on the show, asking: “Have you heard of healthcare.gov?”

The comedian replied under his breath “here we go”, before adding: “OK, let’s get this out of the way, what did you come here to plug?”

Barack Obama went on to explain why he felt it was important for young people to sign up for health insurance in the US, before the deadline on March 31st.

The interview ended with Barack Obama hitting a panic button, which prompted the standard black set to drop to the ground and reveal a room that appeared to be in The White House.

“Thanks for letting me shoot my show here all these years,” said Zach Galifianakis, claiming former President George W. Bush had given him clearance to film in the Diplomatic Room.

Nicolas Sarkozy loses confiscated diaries appeal in Bettencourt case

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has lost the confiscated diaries appeal in Bettencourt case.

The Court of Cassation has ruled investigators can retain the seized diaries and rejected Nicolas Sarkozy’s challenge to the seizure.

The diaries were initially confiscated as part of an inquiry into alleged illegal funding during his successful 2007 presidential campaign.

That case has since been dropped, but the diaries may be used in other investigations targeting Nicolas Sarkozy.

The former president, who lost his re-election bid in 2012, is planning a political comeback and correspondents say the drip of allegations has harmed him.

The diaries were seized after claims surfaced in 2010 that Nicolas Sarkozy had taken advantage of 90-year-old L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt when he was standing for president.

It was alleged that Liliane Bettencourt had given large sums of cash to Nicolas Sarkozy’s aides. Both Nicolas Sarkozy and Liliane Bettencourt denied this. Last October, Nicolas Sarkozy was removed from the list of defendants.

Lawyers for Nicolas Sarkozy argued that confiscating the diaries had been illegal.

But in Tuesday’s ruling, the Court of Cassation decided there was no need to rule on the issue as Nicolas Sarkozy was no longer a suspect in the case.

The ruling comes days after Le Monde newspaper reported that Nicolas Sarkozy had recently had his phone tapped on orders from judges investigating alleged campaign donations from late Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

The papers said the phone taps had revealed evidence of tampering with the justice system. Nicolas Sarkozy denies the claims.

French media say the diaries could be used in this case, and also in an investigation into allegations that French tycoon Bernard Tapie received a huge payout in 2007 to settle a long-running legal battle with the French state.

“We started it to get the message of God out there.”

Sadie Robertson said her family’s show helped to fill a hole in today’s television programming by providing wholesome, Christian values for families to enjoy together.

“We could have easily done a reality show like everyone else,” she said.

“But it’s our faith that catches people’s eyes because sadly, it’s not something we’re used to seeing [on TV] these days.”

Sadie Robertson pointed out that there are several new Christian-themed films coming out this year.

“It just takes one person to take a stance and begin doing something different. We think [the show] has done a good job of getting out God’s message.”

The family sat down for one of their weekly dinners to set up some ground rules before they signed on for the reality show.

“We had a family dinner before the show started and we talked about if at any time in this journey that God is not first, then we have to put the show away,” Sadie Robertson recalled.

“If we start to think of ourselves too highly, we remember that we were happy before the show and we will be happy after the show.”

They even came up with a secret phrase should any family member start to let the fame get to their heads.

“At the dinner, my Uncle [Si] said, <<Remember the Alamo?>>” she explained they simply utter the sentence to remind the person to stay grounded.

Sadie Robertson has seen success outside of Duck Dynasty reality show.

At just 16, Sadie Robertson has sung a duet with country super star Allison Kraus, walked the runway in New York fashion week and co-hosts a popular Youtube series called The New Different with Preacher’s Daughters star Kolby Koloff.

“We started <<The New Different>> because we saw all of these people get famous from doing stupid things on Vine and YouTube and we thought if they can put the stupidest things online and have millions of views, why don’t we start a Christian-based video series?”

Sadie Robertson said it “was a God thing” when fellow reality star Kolby Koloff moved to Louisiana and they started producing the weekly series to cover the “daily struggles that teenagers go through” to give them “words of encouragement each week”.

Missing jet: MH370 flight changed course turning west before vanishing

According to military radars, the missing Malaysia Airlines plane turned west, away from its planned route, before vanishing, Malaysia’s air force says.

Flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing went missing on Saturday, after taking off with 239 people on board.

The international search for any wreckage has been widened.

Earlier, it emerged two men travelling on stolen passports on board the plane were Iranians with no apparent links to terrorist groups, officials said.

One of the men is believed to have been migrating to Germany.

The Malaysian authorities initially said flight MH370 disappeared about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as it flew over the South China Sea, south of Vietnam’s Ca Mau peninsula.

No distress signal or message was sent, but it is believed the plane attempted to turn back, perhaps towards Kuala Lumpur.

Officials still do not know what went wrong with the aircraft.

None of the debris and oil slicks spotted in the South China Sea or Malacca Strait so far have proved to be linked to the disappearance.

Two-thirds of the passengers were Chinese. Others were from various Asian countries, North America or Europe.

Relatives have expressed frustration at the lack of information about the plane’s fate.

At least 40 ships and 34 aircraft are taking part in the search in the seas off Vietnam and Malaysia.

Search teams from Australia, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, New Zealand and the United States of America are assisting.

The search is being conducted on both sides of the Malay Peninsula.

The area has been expanded from 50 nautical miles (57 miles) from where the plane disappeared – over waters between Malaysia and Vietnam – to 100 nautical miles.

Dianne Feinstein: CIA searched Senate computers

Head of the US Senate intelligence committee Dianne Feinstein has publicly accused the CIA of improperly accessing computers used by congressional staff.

Senator Dianne Feinstein said on the Senate floor that such activities “may have undermined the constitutional framework” of government oversight.

The Senate panel was investigating allegations of abuse during a CIA detention and interrogation program.

A CIA internal watchdog has been tasked with looking into the alleged hacking.

“I am not taking it lightly,” Dianne Feinstein said of the matter on Tuesday, adding that the CIA may have violated federal laws in its alleged conduct.

But CIA director John Brennan rejected the Senate allegations.

“The CIA was in no way spying… on the Senate,” John Brennan told MSNBC on Tuesday.

The CIA is accused of secretly removing documents from computers used by the Senate intelligence committee during an investigation into alleged CIA abuse.

Those computers were provided by the CIA to congressional members of staff at a secure site so that Senate investigators could review millions of pages of top secret documents.

The alleged CIA abuse stemmed from a detention and interrogation program under former President George W. Bush.

Dianne Feinstein has previously said that the committee’s 6,000-page “comprehensive review” – completed in 2013 and encompassing six million pages of records – found that the CIA program had yielded little or no significant intelligence.

On Tuesday, the Senate intelligence committee chairwoman reportedly said such improper access to congressional networks, if true, amounted to attempted intimidation of investigators.

Dianne Feinstein also said she had requested an apology from the agency and an acknowledgment that the search was inappropriate, but had “received neither” despite sending letters to the agency requesting information on January 17 and 23.

She noted that CIA inspector general David Buckley had been tasked with looking into the alleged actions.

Dianne Feinstein said he had already referred the matter to the Department of Justice, “given the possibility of a criminal violation by CIA personnel”.

MH370 flight: Iranians travelling on stolen passports identified by Malaysian police and Interpol

Malaysian police named one of the two men who travelled on the missing Malaysia Airlines plane on a stolen passport as Pouria Nour Mohammad Mehrdad, 18, and said he was probably migrating to Germany.

Interpol identified the other man as Delavar Seyed Mohammadreza, 29.

Experts have said the presence of two people with stolen passports on a plane was a breach of security, but one that is relatively common in a region regarded as a hub for illegal migration.

Malaysian police say the younger Iranian was “not likely to be a member of a terrorist group”, adding that the authorities were in contact with his mother in Germany, who had been expecting her son to arrive in Frankfurt.

Interpol says the two men travelled from Qatar’s capital Doha on their Iranian passports, and switched to stolen Italian and Austrian passports to board the Malaysia Airlines flight.

How to re-light the passion in your relationship

0

What do you do when you feel like your relationship has become stuck in a rut? Depending on the circumstances, there are different options available to you.

If you’re young and there are no kids involved, then ending a relationship may not be a big deal. You may have only been going out for a few months and not moved in together, in which case, although it might be difficult to end the relationship as you’ll upset the other person, at least it can be a fairly ‘clean’ break. It’s worse, of course, if you have a property together, or even just live in rented accommodation together, but there are always ways out of a relationship if that’s what you decide to do.

If, however, you are in a long-term relationship or marriage and have children, it can be an entirely different proposition.

i'll take you away, turn this place into our private getawayOf course, most people try to work out the problems in their relationship before they throw in the towel and split up. They originally fell for their partner for a reason – they were physically attracted to them, they were friends before they became lovers – whatever it may be, long-term relationships are often worth fighting for.

There are different ways you can approach relationship problems. Maybe it’s just that you’ve taken each other for granted for too long; the relationship might have lost that special feeling that it used to have. Life has a habit of getting in the way too, and with kids and work taking up so much time and energy, then nurturing the relationship with your partner can sometimes go by the wayside.

Some couples find that having a ‘date night’ is a good way to rebuild the closeness they once had. Making time to spend alone with each other allows you time to get reacquainted, to talk and listen to each other without the distraction of having other people around, to remember why it was that you fell in love in the first place. Putting a regular date night in the diary can make all the difference to some couples.

Other couples might have problems that run deeper than that. They might need help from a third party to look at and analyse their relationship without things disintegrating into an argument. Some people choose to have relationship counseling or to have psychic readings together. Having a neutral third party can sometimes be useful in getting a better understanding of how each other’s behavior can make the other person feel.

It’s not always possible to rekindle the ‘magic’ in a relationship once it has been lost, but it’s certainly worth giving it a try, especially if you have children together, for their sake as much as your own.

Bachelor Season 18 finale: Nikki Farrell gets Juan Pablo Galavis’s final rose

The Bachelor Season 18 finale episode began with each of the girls meeting Juan Pablo Galavis’ family in St. Lucia.

Clare Crawley is up first and has an interesting conversation with his mom. When Clare asks her if there’s anything she should know, Juan Pablo’s mom eventually says: “He is sometimes very rude.”

Clare then brings up their disagreement from Vietnam and somehow finds comfort in his mom’s reaction to it.

Nikki Ferrell has already spent some brief time with Juan Pablo’s parents, daughter Camila, and Camila’s mom.

This time she sits down with his cousin Rodolfo. It’s then that Nikki also hears what are potential red flags straight from Rodolfo.

“Juan Pablo … sometimes when things are getting rough, he walks away [from] the relationship,” Rodolfo tells her.

“So how can you deal with that?”

“I think a relationship with no fighting, [has] no passion… so I feel like we would fight well,” Nikki says.

Both girls have their final one-on-one dates. For Clare, it’s a romantic helicopter ride. But when they step off the plane, Clare says Juan Pablo made some hurtful, insulting remarks. She explains he said something along the lines of: “I don’t know you that well, but I love hooking up with you.”

Later in her hotel room, Clare tries to get Juan Pablo to clarify and as per usual his party line is: “It’s OK.”

But Clare finally gets Juan Pablo to say what she wants to hear, that it’s more than just the physical with her.

“Tonight I know that he wants me here,” she says.

Nikki’s final date with Juan Pablo begins with a catamaran ride. But, again, he brings up some insecurities Nikki has about their relationship. Later that night, Nikki is still concerned that she’s going to lose Juan Pablo. After giving him a photo and a letter expressing her feelings for him, Juan Pablo says goodbye for the final time before she finds out if she’s the one.

At the end of the show, Juan Pablo picks Nikki, saying: “I have a ring here in my pocket and I’m not going to use it. I’m not 100 percent sure I want to propose to you, but at the same time I’m 100 percent sure I don’t want to let you go.”

For the first time since Brad Womack rejected both ladies in the Season 11 finale, there was no proposal.

Juan Pablo Galavis hands out the final rose, but without a ring, and Nikki Ferrell accepts it.

Elephants are able to recognize human voices

According to a new study, elephants are able to differentiate between ethnicities and genders, and can tell an adult from a child – all from the sound of a human voice.

The research team played voice recordings to wild African elephants.

The animals showed more fear when they heard the voices of adult Masai men.

Livestock-herding Masai people do come into conflict with elephants, and this suggests that animals have adapted to specifically listen for and avoid them.

The study is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Karen McComb and Dr. Graeme Shannon from the University of Sussex, who led the study, explained that in previous research they had used similar playback experiments to reveal that elephants could tell – from the sound of a lion’s roar – whether the animal was a female or a more dangerous male.

Other studies have shown that elephants respond with fear to the scent and even to the red color of the Masai clothing.

“I’ve experienced that,” explained Prof. Karen McComb.

“If you give a Masai man a lift in your car, you can see the elephants behave in a different way around you.

“They’re much more wary of the car and you see a lot of smelling and listening.”

Prof. Karen McComb wanted to find out if the animals used their very acute sense of hearing to identify a potential threat from humans.

The scientists recorded Masai men, women and children saying, in their own language, “look, look over there, a group of elephants is coming”.

They also recorded Kamba men saying this phrase.

While cattle-herding Maasai people often encounter free-ranging elephants, which can result in violent conflict, the Kamba people’s more agricultural lifestyle does not generally bring them into aggressive contact with the animals.

When the team played recordings of these different voices through a camouflaged loudspeaker, they found that elephant family groups reacted more fearfully in response to the voice of a Masai man, than to a Kamba man’s voice – retreating and bunching together defensively.

And the adult male Masai voices triggered far more of these defensive reactions than the voices of women or boys.

An additional and unexpected finding was that when the researchers changed the pitch and frequency of the voices – making a male Masai voice sound more female – the elephants would still react in the same way as they did to the original recording.

“That suggests they’re using completely different cues [to us] in order to attribute gender,” said Prof. Karen McComb.

Frans van der Waal from the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University, a researcher and the author of several books on animal behavior, wrote in an accompanying article in PNAS that this finding suggested we had “much to learn about how elephants make decisions”.

Prof. Karen McComb said the research showed that elephants were “trying to adapt” to human threats.

“Humans are undoubtedly the most dangerous and versatile predators the elephants are faced with these days,” she said.
