Panama elections 2014: Outsider Juan Carlos Varela wins presidential poll

Panama’s opposition leader Juan Carlos Varela has won the presidential election with almost 40% of the votes.

Juan Carlos Varela, who is currently the vice-president, had distanced himself from outgoing President Ricardo Martinelli.

Correspondents say Juan Carlos Varela has taken credit for Ricardo Martinelli’s economic success, but has promised a cleaner, more transparent government.

The president’s preferred candidate, the governing party contender Jose Domingo Arias, came second.

President Ricardo Martinelli had actively supported the campaign of Jose Domingo Arias, 50, and the leader’s wife Marta Linares was the candidate’s running mate.

Critics said his support for the Arias-Linares team was an attempt by Ricardo Martinelli to hold on to the reins of power.

Under the Panamanian constitution, presidents are obliged to step down after one term and are banned from running for the two following terms.

Juan Carlos Varela, a former centre-right ally of Ricardo Martinelli, fell out with the president after he was dismissed from his post as foreign minister in 2011.

After he had achieved an unassailable lead in the poll, Juan Carlos Varela, 50, told Reuters news agency that “better times are on their way”.

Alluding to allegations of corruption against Ricardo Martinelli’s government, he said his would be “an honest, humane government of national unity”.

Hearing of Juan Carlos Varela’s win, Ricardo Martinelli said: “I know the candidate, and really, may God help us!”

He said in light of Juan Carlos Varela’s success he would change his plans of “enjoying life” and go into opposition instead.

Juan Carlos Varela struck a conciliatory note, saying it was time “to put the party banners away and to govern under one flag, that of Panama”.

Despite his unexpected win in the presidential poll, Juan Carlos Varela’s party only got 11 of the 71 seats in Congress which were also up for election.

After his swearing-in on July 1st, Juan Carlos Varela will therefore have to form alliances with the opposition to push his planned reforms through the legislature.

He faces the challenge of maintaining buoyant growth while dealing with economic inequality, with a quarter of the population living in poverty.

Juan Carlos Varela will also have oversight of a major expansion of the Panama Canal, which accounts for 8% of gross domestic product in the country.

Recent discontent led to a nationwide construction strike over pay, which halted work on the canal and thousands of other projects.

Among the first leaders to congratulate Juan Carlos Varela was Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Venezuela earlier this year broke ties with Panama accusing the Central American nation of fomenting a coup against Nicolas Maduro by offering support to a Venezuelan opposition leader.

Nigeria missing girls: Goodluck Jonathan admits security forces still don’t know girls whereabouts

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has admitted that the country’s security forces still do not know where more than 200 abducted schoolgirls are being held.

The girls were taken three weeks ago from their school in Borno state by suspected Islamist militants.

President Goodluck Jonathan was speaking for the first time since their disappearance amid growing criticism of the response.

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has admitted that the country’s security forces still do not know where more than 200 abducted schoolgirls are being held

He has come under fire for not speaking earlier and his government has faced increasing anger from the public.

“We promise that anywhere the girls are, we will surely get them out,” he said in a live TV broadcast.

Goodluck Jonathan said that despite searches by the army and the air force, the girls had not been found.

He asked for the co-operation of parents and the local communities in the rescue efforts, saying the “government needs assistance.”

“It is a trying time for this country… it is painful,” he added.

Islamist militants known as Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is a sin”, are believed to be behind the kidnapping of the girls from their school in Chibok.

They have waged a violent campaign in the north-east that has killed hundreds of Christians and Muslims.

Goodluck Jonathan dismissed the suggestion that negotiations were taking place to secure the release of the girls, saying it was impossible to talk to Boko Haram.

“You don’t negotiate with somebody you don’t know. The issue of negotiation has not come up,” he said.

He said his government has spoken to the United States and several other world powers, including France, Britain and China, for help with its security issues.

“We are talking to countries we think can help us out. The United States is number one. I have talked to President Obama at least twice,” Goodluck Jonathan said.

Michelle Knight returns to Dr. Phil show after six months

Cleveland survivor Michelle Knight is returning to Dr. Phil show for a follow-up discussion after her two-part interview aired six months ago.

The new interview with Dr. Phil McGraw will air Wednesday, May 7, a day after the release of Michelle Knight’s memoir, Finding Me: A Decade of Darkness, A Life Reclaimed.

Dr. Phil airs at 5 p.m. on WKYC Channel 3.

Michelle Knight also is being interviewed by Savannah Guthrie for an episode of NBC’s Dateline. The program airs at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 4, on Channel 3. She will then be in studio Monday morning for NBC’s Today show.

During her November appearance on Dr. Phil, Michelle Knight spoke about the day she was kidnapped by Ariel Castro, how she endured 10 years in captivity, and how she finally escaped from Castro’s Seymour Avenue home.

In the follow-up interview with Dr. Phil McGraw, she discusses her first year of freedom and how she’s worked to build an independent life.

According to a statement released by the show: “Since her nightmare ended one year ago, Michelle is healthy and happy, and has created a productive and meaningful life for herself. Though she once was forced to live off of meager food scraps, she is now in culinary school pursuing a secure and stable career. She shows her strength as she joins Dr. Phil for her first interview in front of a live, studio audience.”

Michelle Knight was the first of three Cleveland women abducted by Castro. She disappeared in August 2002. She was 21 at the time.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were held captive by Ariel Castro for more than 10 years. Amanda Berry was kidnapped in April 2003, the day before her 17th birthday. Gina DeJesus was 14 when she disappeared in April 2004. They escaped from the Seymour Avenue home on May 6, 2013.

“Having formed a deep bond with Dr. Phil during their first meeting last year, Michelle had shared some painful experiences with him privately that she wasn’t comfortable sharing publicly,” the production company’s description of the episode says.

“The experience of writing her book over the past year, though, has been therapeutic for Michelle and prepared her to discuss these experiences in front of the audience.”

Dr. Phil McGraw was granted a look inside the many journals Michelle Knight kept while in captivity, reading the poems and letters she wrote to her son.

“Amanda and Gina had families to go home to, but after Michelle was freed, no one thought she could care for herself or that she could live on her own,” Phil McGraw said in the statement released by the Dr. Phil show.

“Michelle has certainly proven everybody wrong.”

Michelle Knight recently reunited with her fellow captives, and she tells Phil McGraw about their relationship today, and where she sees it going in the future.

Odessa detainees released as pro-Russian separatists attack police headquarters

Pro-Russian separatists have attacked Ukraine’s police headquarters in Odessa, forcing the release of several people held over deadly violence two days ago.

Friday’s clashes led to more than 40 deaths. Most victims were pro-Russian activists killed when the building they were in caught fire.

Ukraine’s interim PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk has accused police of failing to prevent the violence.

He was speaking as Ukrainian troops encircled Sloviansk in the east.

The army operation is trying to wrest control from separatists who have taken over a government buildings in a number of towns.

Hundreds of people descended on the police headquarters on Sunday afternoon in an initially peaceful protest calling for the released of those detained.

The gathering turned violent as protesters – some wearing masks and carrying improvised weapons – broke windows and forced the gates.

There were chants of “Russia, Russia” and “Russians won’t abandon their own”.

A number of detainees were then released by the police, apparently in an attempt to pacify the crowds. Reuters, quoting police sources, put the number freed at 30. The interior ministry, in a statement quoted by the Associated Press, said 67 people were released.

Odessa had been observing a day of mourning for those killed on Friday, when running street battles involving petrol bombs led to a fire breaking out on the third floor of a trade union building.

Dozens of pro-Russian activists had barricaded themselves inside. While some were rescued, 38 people either burned, suffocated or jumped to their deaths.

Moscow and Kiev have blamed each other’s supporters for the fire.

On Sunday, many visited the burned out trade union building, which now has a large Russian flag draped on one wall, to pay tribute.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who has travelled to Odessa, has ordered a full investigation into what happened, saying the authorities did “nothing to stop this crackdown”, and were “inefficient and they violated the law”.

He told a news conference that all the senior police in the city had been fired and would be replaced.

But he said the unrest was “part of a plan fomented by Russia to destroy Ukraine”.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk insisted Kiev had not lost control entirely, saying much would depend on whether local populations “support peace and stability or whether they support those who are sponsored by Russian”.

Sewol ferry confirmed death toll reaches 244

The confirmed death toll from the Sewol ferry disaster has reached 244, South Korean officials have announced.

Meanwhile President Park Geun-hye met relatives of those on board.

Park Geun-hye told family members that those responsible for the ferry sinking on April 16 would be “punished severely”.

The Sewol ferry had 476 passengers on board when it sank – 174 were rescued, and 58 remain unaccounted for.

Prosecutors say the ferry owner ignored safety warnings and allowed the ship to be overloaded.

Park Geun-hye visited Jindo island, close to where the ship sank, on Sunday. It was her second meeting with the family members.

Speaking to relatives, the president said: “I feel a sense of unlimited responsibility… it is heart-rending to imagine how you must be feeling.”

“A thorough investigation will be conducted to find those who were responsible and criminally at fault… and they will be punished severely,” she added.

Authorities are investigating whether the ship sank from overloading and changes in the structure of the ship.

Anger has also been directed at the ship’s captain and crew members, who delayed giving evacuation orders.

Last week, South Korean PM Chung Hong-won resigned amid criticism of the government’s handling of the disaster.

Divers have been navigating the sunken ship in an attempt to retrieve the remaining bodies. However, the search has been hampered by strong currents, debris, and poor visibility.

Several divers were suffering from decompression sickness, Yonhap news agency reported on Friday.

Who is Cressida Bonas?

This week Prince Harry had decided to part ways after a solid two-year relationship with Cressida Bonas.

And Prince Harry has wasted no time getting back to his single life.

A blue-blooded, blond, leggy former model, Cressida Bonas had all the makings of a princess. But it was not to be.

Born in February 1989, Cressy, as she is known to friends, is the daughter of Jeffrey Bonas and Lady Mary-Gaye Curzon. She has one sister and three half-siblings from her mother’s first marriage.

Cressida Bonas studied dance at the University of Leeds but is also known to have tried her hand at stage acting. She has been pictured frequenting music festivals and is said to love partying on the dance floor.

It is believed that Princess Eugenie was the one to introduce Cressida Bonas and Prince Harry in June 2012

It’s believed that Princess Eugenie, who is a mutual and close friend to both, was the one to introduce Cressida Bonas and Prince Harry in June 2012.

Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas were first photographed together after the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 before hitting clubs and theaters together later that year.

As a couple, Cressida Bonas and Prince Harry were low-key and rarely gave the press a chance to catch them together.

They had a bumpy and sometimes turbulent relationship: Prince Harry was pictured partying in Miami in 2012, which is said to have temporarily put the brakes on their romance. But the pair managed to patch things up and got more serious than ever.

Cressida Bonas is said to have been unhappy at the amount of attention given to her by the press and overwhelmed at the possibility of becoming a royal.

When it was announced, Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas split surprised even the most avid royal-watchers.

“Nobody had any idea that this was coming,” Ingrid Seward, editor in chief of Majesty magazine, told PEOPLE magazine.

“She was moving into her new flat and getting on with her life. I thought they were very happy together.”

According to sources, Cressida Bonas, who is currently working for a marketing company in London’s Soho, has been given compassionate leave from work, while she gets over the break up.

Cressida Bonas was photographed earlier this week looking tired and drawn as she made her way to the office, and hasn’t been seen since then.

When Kate Middleton and Prince William broke up in 2007, she was granted the same thing.

Prince Harry does not seem to be suffering the same difficulties; he has been living it up at Miami pre-wedding celebrations for his friend, Guy Pelly.

Despite a recent InTouch cover story that claimed Jennifer Aniston is expecting a baby girl with fiancé Justin Theroux, it appears the actress is not pregnant.

“She’s not pregnant,” one source told Us Weekly.

Jennifer Aniston, who recently returned to the West Coast following an NYC jaunt with Justin Theroux, complained to pals in March that she ate too much in Manhattan.

Following her NYC trip, Jennifer Aniston returned to work on the L.A. set of upcoming indie flick Cake, where she was photographed last month from a side angle – revealing a supposedly fuller tummy.

The InTouch story also claimed that Justin Theroux was a “changed man,” going from “commitment-phobe carouser to doting dad-to-be overnight” following Jennifer Aniston’s alleged pregnancy.

A source close to Justin Theroux says that while the couple is not yet expecting any little ones, they are open to having a family in the future.

Ukraine: PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk blames security forces for failing to stop Odessa violence

Ukraine’s interim PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk has blamed the country’s security services for failing to stop violence in the southern city of Odessa that left more than 40 people dead.

Most of the victims were pro-Russian separatists who died in a fire after barricading themselves in a building.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s comments came as Ukrainian troops surrounded the pro-Russian stronghold of Sloviansk in the east.

He said of the Odessa violence: “I personally blame the security service and law enforcement office for doing nothing to stop this crackdown.”

Arseniy Yatsenyuk said: “These security forces are inefficient and they violated the law.”

He said the police chief of the Odessa region had been removed and that the prosecutor’s office had started an investigation.

“The prosecutor’s office is to investigate everyone – starting with the chief of police, his deputies and every single police officer.”

However, Arsniy Yatsenyuk also blamed pro-Russian groups for “provoking the unrest”.

He accused Russia and pro-Russian protesters of orchestrating “real war… to eliminate Ukraine and eliminate Ukrainian independence”.

Ukrainian troops have encircled Sloviansk as the government seeks to wrest control from the separatists.

Several people were reported killed in clashes around Sloviansk on Saturday. The defense ministry said one checkpoint was removed overnight.

Gunfire was also reported overnight in Kostyantynivka and Mariupol as Ukrainian forces tried to reclaim government offices.

There was heavy fighting in the town of Kramatorsk on Saturday, with the interior ministry saying the army had retaken a television tower.

Kiev officials said at least two people were killed in the town, although Russian state television reported 10 deaths.

Barack Obama makes fun of his healthcare policy at White House Correspondents Dinner 2014

Barack Obama made fun of his healthcare policy, his political opponents and Vladimir Putin at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

The healthcare policy has serious IT issues, prompting the joke: “In 2008 my slogan was: <<Yes we can>>. In 2013 my slogan was: <<Control-alt-delete>>.”

Barack Obama ridiculed media commentators for their apparent obsession with Vladimir Putin’s bare chest.

Dozens of celebrities, journalists and politicians were at the dinner.

Barack Obama made fun of his healthcare policy, his political opponents and Vladimir Putin at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner

The roll-out of healthcare.gov, Barack Obama’s main policy initiative of his second term, provided much of the humor.

The president made several references to computer malfunctions.

“Does anybody know how to fix this,” he asked, pretending that the overhead projector had failed to work.

Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who quit as a result of the IT issues, stepped up and said: “I got this. I see it all the time.”

The president used Vladimir Putin as a way of lampooning some conservative commentators and political opponents.

“Last year [conservative commentator] Pat Buchanan said Putin is headed straight for the Nobel Peace Prize… to be fair they give those to just about anybody these days. So it could happen,” he said.

Barack Obama was given the award in 2009 having been nominated for it after less than two weeks in office.

“[Republican] Mike Huckabee and [conservative commentator] Sean Hannity keep talking about his bare chest, which is kind of weird.”

The annual WHCA Dinner is traditionally used by presidents to ridicule their opponents, but also laugh at themselves.

The al-Qaeda-linked group al-Shabab has carried out several attacks in Kenya since 2011, when Kenya sent troops into Somalia to battle it.

No-one has yet claimed responsibility for Saturday’s blasts.

The first blast is believed to have occurred after a grenade was thrown in a Nairobi-Mombasa bus that had just arrived in the busy Mwembe Tayari transport terminal, killing three people and wounding at least four others.

The second explosion took place at a beach bar near the Nayali Reef Hotel, after a device was left in a plastic bag in the washroom.

It is thought that a third attack was planned for a nearby cinema complex but was unsuccessful.

All three incidents happened within minutes of each other.

Tensions have been rising in Mombasa in recent months, with authorities accusing Islamists of radicalizing local youths.

Al-Shabab was blamed for an attack on a church in Mombasa in March that killed six people.

Shortly afterwards, a radical Muslim cleric alleged to have acted as a recruiter for al-Shabab was shot dead near Mombasa, prompting riots in the city.

Afghanistan landslides kill at least 2,500 people in Badakhshan

Afghan rescuers have given up hope of finding any more survivors in a double landslide that is feared to have killed more than 2,500 people in Badakhshan.

They have stopped digging through the earth and mud that swamped a whole village in the remote north-east province of Badakhshan on Friday.

Officials now say the site has become a mass grave for the village of Ab Barik.

Aid, including tents, food and water, has begun to arrive for the survivors.

They spent Friday night camped out in near freezing conditions on the open hillside.

Heavy rain is believed to have triggered Friday’s two landslides, the first of which buried hundreds of homes and the second then killed rescuers who had arrived at the scene to help reach survivors.

Attempts to dig through the thick mud to find survivors continued into Saturday, with people using shovels and even their bare hands.

But the last of the diggers had given up by later on in the day, realizing their efforts are futile, our correspondent reports.

“We cannot continue the search and rescue operation anymore, as the houses are under metres of mud,” provincial governor Shah Waliullah Adeeb said.

“We will offer prayers for the victims and make the area a mass grave.”

The landslide buried around 370 homes, which officials say housed in total some 2,500 people.

The UN says only 350 bodies have so far been recovered.

The landslides hit on Friday morning, a day of rest in Afghanistan, meaning whole families would have been at home at the time.

After the first landslide struck, residents from a neighboring village came to the rescue only to be caught by a second landslide that brought down the entire side of one hill and thousands of tonnes of mud and earth.

Continuing rain has raised fears of further landslides.

Badakhshan is in the most remote and mountainous part of the country, bordering Tajikistan, China and Pakistan.

It is one of the poorest regions in one of the poorest countries.

Another, smaller landslide was reported in Badakhshan on Thursday.
