Abdullah Ocalan calls for PKK fighters to end armed struggle in Turkey

Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of Kurdistan Workers’ Party in Turkey, has renewed a call for his fighters to end their armed struggle in the country.

In a message read out at a huge rally marking the Kurdish New Year, Abdullah Ocalan called for a congress to decide on abandoning the insurgency.

PKK has been waging a 30-year armed struggle for Kurdish independence.

Abdullah Ocalan called a ceasefire in 2013 and there are growing hopes of a long-term deal.

More than 40,000 people, mostly Kurds, have died in fighting for a Kurdish homeland in Turkey’s south-east.

Abdullah Ocalan has been in prison since 1999, serving a life sentence for treason.Abdullah Ocalan PKK

His message was delivered instead by Sirri Sureyya Onder, a pro-Kurdish politician who visited Abdullah Ocalan in jail on March 19.

Hundreds of thousands attended the celebration in Diyarbakir, the largest Kurdish-populated city in eastern Turkey, with many carrying images of the imprisoned leader.

A ceasefire announced by Abdullah Ocalan in 2013 still holds despite ongoing mistrust between the two sides.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan angered some Kurds by saying the country “never had a Kurdish problem”.

Turkey is facing parliamentary elections later this year, with analysts suggesting Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s comments were an attempt to shore-up nationalist support.

Brooklyn house fire kills 7 children

A New York City house fire has killed seven children in Brooklyn, officials say.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said that the blaze started shortly after midnight and that those killed were all between 5 and 15 years old.

A woman believed to be the children’s mother and a teenager escaped by jumping out of second-floor windows.

Both survivors are in a critical condition in hospital, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.Brooklyn house fire

Speaking at a press conference on March 21, Daniel Nigro said that the incident was the “largest tragedy by fire that this city has had in seven years”.

“It’s a tragedy for this family, it’s a tragedy for this community, it’s a tragedy for the city,” he added.

FDNY spokesman Jim Long said that more than 100 fire-fighters had worked to bring the blaze under control.

The fire was believed to have been started by a malfunctioning hot plate in the kitchen.

Daniel Nigro said that the family had become trapped on the second floor when the fire reached the stairs, cutting off their escape.

“There was no evidence of smoke detectors on either the first or the second floor that may have alerted this family to the fire,” he said.

South Korea, China and Japan hold first trilateral meeting in three years

0

China, Japan and South Korea’s foreign ministers are meeting for their first talks since 2012.

The meeting in Seoul is likely to focus on ways to ease regional tensions over territorial and diplomatic disputes.

The three states have strong economic ties but relations still suffer from unresolved issues dating back to Japan’s actions in World War Two.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said he hoped the ministers would be able to “look forward into the future”.

South Korea’s Yun Byung-se welcomed Japan’s Fumio Kishida and China’s Wang Yi to South Korea’s capital on March 21.

Foreign ministers from China, Japan and South Korea last met in April 2012, for their sixth annual trilateral meeting.

It was cancelled the following year after Japanese PM Shinzo Abe angered China and South Korea by visiting a shrine that honors Japan’s war dead, including a number of senior war criminals.Japan, South Korea and China foreign ministers

China and South Korea have accused Tokyo of failing to adequately atone for aggression in World War Two, including its wartime use of s** slaves, known euphemistically as “comfort women”.

They also accuse Japan of whitewashing wartime atrocities in schoolbooks.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed hope that South Korea would join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and South Korea’s Yun Byung-se said Seoul was reviewing its options, a South Korean official told Reuters after the meeting of the two ministers.

Fumio Kishida met his South Korean counterpart ahead of the trilateral meeting, and said that “despite difficult issues between the two countries”, the two sides would “continue communicating at various levels in order to strengthen our co-operation”.

The resumption of the foreign ministers’ meeting has fuelled hopes that a summit of the counties’ three leaders could be held later this year.

The poor relationship between Japan and South Korea has become a concern for the US, which sees the two countries as its main military allies in Asia.

Last week, US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel described the tension between its “two friends” as a “strategic liability”.

Saturday’s meeting comes just days after China and Japan held their first high-level security talks in four years.

Those discussions are believed to have centered on the creation of a maritime communication hotline between the countries, following tensions over islands in the East China Sea.

There have been several disputes in recent years over the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, and officials have expressed fears that a clash could trigger a full-blown conflict.

Carnufex carolinensis: Prehistoric crocodile discovered in North Carolina

A previously unknown prehistoric crocodile, whose bones were found in Chatham County, North Carolina, several years ago, has been named Carnufex carolinensis.

Paleontologist Lindsay Zanno says she chose Carnufex carolinensis which is Latin for “Carolina butcher”.

“I thought it had a nice ring,” said Lindsay Zanno, a research professor at N.C. State University who also runs the paleontology and geology lab at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences.

“When I saw this animal, and when we reconstructed its skull, it was clearly an animal built for slicing flesh.”

The discovery of the Carolina butcher will be announced next week in a paper in the journal Scientific Reports and with a public presentation at the science museum in downtown Raleigh starting at 11 a.m.

The presentation includes an artist’s rendering of what the creature might have looked like, based on the few bones that were found and what’s known about its closest relatives.

This specimen was about 9 feet long and was probably a top predator, feasting on armored reptiles and early mammals found at the time, about 231 million years ago. This is the beginning of what’s known as the late Triassic Period, when what is now Chatham County was near the equator in a warm, humid environment of ferns and conifers.

Scientists know the age of the creature not from its bones but from the age of the rocks in which it was found, in a quarry more than a decade ago.

Photo Jorge Gonzalez/PA
Photo Jorge Gonzalez/PA

Museum curator Vincent Schneider found the bones mostly encased in rock and brought them back to the museum, where they remained a mystery for years.

Lindsay Zanno said Carnufex appears to be a missing link between creatures that stood on their hind legs and had skulls that resembled a Tyrannosaurus rex and later ones that moved around on all fours, like present-day crocs and alligators.

Scientists won’t know for sure until someone finds Carnufex’s hind limbs, but the animal’s small forelimbs suggest that it walked on its hind legs, Lindsay Zanno said.

The Carolina butcher is the second new ancient crocodile ancestor found near Raleigh and identified at the science museum in as many months. Last month, Appalachian State University geology professor Andrew B. Heckert announced the discovery of a new kind of aetosaur from the late Triassic Period with a distinctive ring of armor plates around its neck.

Blurred Lines copyright case: Pharrell Williams warns verdict could have chilling effect on creativity

In his first interview since losing the Blurred Lines copyright case, Pharrell Williams warned the ruling could have a chilling effect on creativity.

“You can’t own emotions,” the singer told the Financial Times.

“The verdict handicaps any creator out there who is making something that might be inspired by something else,” Parrell Williams said.

“This applies to fashion, music, design… anything. If we lose our freedom to be inspired we’re going to look up one day and the entertainment industry as we know it will be frozen in litigation. A federal court in LA had ruled Pharrell Williams’ song Blurred Lines infringed the copyright of Marvin Gaye’s Got to Give It Up, and ordered Williams and fellow singer Robin Thicke to pay damages of $7.3 million to the Gaye estate.

On March 19, Marvin Gaye’s family filed an injunction to stop the copying, distributing and performing of Blurred Lines.

Suge Knight collapses in courtroom

Marion “Suge” Knight has been hospitalized after collapsing in court in Los Angeles.

It happened shortly after a judge ordered that Suge Knight’s bail be set at $25 million in a murder case.

Death Row Records co-founder’s defense lawyer said Suge Knight, 49, hit his head on a chair as he fell.

The music mogul has pleaded not guilty to murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run charges.

Suge Knight denies running down two men with a pickup truck in Los Angeles following an argument in January on the set of a commercial for the film Straight Outta Compton.

One of the men, 55-year-old Terry Carter, was killed, while the other was seriously injured.

After his collapse, lawyer Matthew Fletcher told the court that his client, who is diabetic and has a blood clot, hadn’t received any medication since March 19.

Matthew Fletcher claimed Suge Knight was being kept in solitary confinement without proper access to medication.

The lawyer also criticized the bail amount calling it “absurd” and “clearly excessive”.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Coen approved the amount because prosecutors noted that Suge Knight was already on bail over a separate robbery case.

Since his arrest, Suge Knight has suffered various health problems and this is the fourth time he’s had to be taken from the courthouse by ambulance.

He’d previously been hospitalized after complaining of chest pains and also said he’s now blind in one eye and has about 15% vision in the other.

Suge Knight has previous convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and could face 25 years to life in prison if he’s convicted at trial.

Day of Happiness 2015: People invited to focus on their connections with others

0

Since 2012, March 20 is being celebrated as the International Day of Happiness every year.

According to the United Nations (UN), which declared March 20 to be observed as the International Day of Happiness, the day recognizes that happiness is a fundamental human goal, and calls upon countries to approach public policies in ways that improve the well being of all peoples.

By designating a special day for happiness, the UN aims to focus world attention on the idea that economic growth must be inclusive, equitable, and balanced, such that it promotes sustainable development, and alleviates poverty.International Day of Happiness 2015

Additionally the UN acknowledges that in order to attain global happiness, economic development must be accompanied by social and environmental well being

The initiative to declare a day of happiness came from Bhutan – a country whose citizens are considered to be some of the happiest people in the world. The Himalayan Kingdom has championed an alternative measure of national and societal prosperity, called the Gross National Happiness Index (GNH). The GNH rejects the sole use of economic and material wealth as an indicator of development, and instead adopts a more holistic outlook, where spiritual well being of citizens and communities is given as much importance as their material well being.

For the International Day of Happiness 2015 people are invited to focus on their connections with others.

John Boehner to visit Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel

House Speaker John Boehner plans to visit Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel next month.

Republicans have been highly critical of President Barack Obama over the deteriorating relationship with Israel.

John Boehner’s visit will take place in April, weeks after a clear election victory for Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party.

During the campaign, Benjamin Netanyahu vowed not to allow the establishment of a Palestinian state, angering the White House.

Benjamin Netanyahu has since tempered those remarks, but the White House still warned there would be “consequences”.John Boehner to visit Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel

Barack Obama called Benjamin Netanyahu on March 19 to congratulate him on his election victory, but warned him that the US was reassessing its approach to Israeli-Palestine peace in the wake of Netanyahu’s comments.

John Boehner’s visit will take place at some point during a two-week congressional recess that begins on March 30, according to his spokesman, Kevin Smith.

“He looks forward to visiting the country, discussing our shared priorities for peace and security in the region, and further strengthening the bond between the United States and Israel,” Kevin Smith said.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz said the visit would include several congressional Republicans.

Kevin Smith declined to comment on specifics of the trip.

In January, John Boehner invited Benjamin Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress without notifying the White House.

Benjamin Netanyahu used the speech on March 3, two weeks before the Israeli elections, to criticize Barack Obama’s efforts to reach an agreement with Iran on its nuclear program.

Obama Administration officials and several Congressional Democrats criticized Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech, calling it a political ploy.

Many Democrats chose not to attend the speech, and Barack Obama refused to meet with Benjamin Netanyahu.

John Boehner last visited Israel in 2008.

Jeremy Clarkson expects to be fired

Jeremy Clarkson has said he expects to be “sacked” by the BBC.

The Top Gear host was speaking at a charity event in London, where he was auctioning what he described as his “last lap” on the show.

“I don’t know when I did my last ever lap of the track before the BBC sack me,” he said.

An investigation into Jeremy Clarkson’s current suspension following a “fracas” with a producer is still ongoing and the final report is due next week.

The report over the incident will be handed to BBC director general Tony Hall, who will consider the evidence and “set out any further steps”.

The Roundhouse Gala on March 19 saw Jeremy Clarkson offer to drive someone round the Top Gear track as part of an experience offered during the auction.

“I didn’t foresee my sacking, but I would like to do one last lap,” he said.Roundhouse Gala Jeremy Clarkson

“I’ll go down to Surrey and I’ll do one last lap of that track before the [BBC] sack me.

“And I’ll drive somebody around in whatever I can get hold of when I’m sacked, so it’s probably an Austin Maestro.”

Jeremy Clarkson also said that Top Gear had been “a great show” but it had been ruined by the corporation.

The BBC said it would “not be offering further commentary” on any issues involving Jack Clarkson until the current investigation was concluded.

Jeremy Clarkson was suspended from Top Gear on March 10, following an alleged altercation with producer Oisin Tymon.

A petition of almost one million signatures calling for Jeremy Clarkson’s reinstatement was delivered to New Broadcasting House on March 20.

The petition was delivered by a man dressed as “The Stig” who arrived at the BBC’s London headquarters in a tank bearing the words “Bring Back Clarkson”.

All remaining shows in the current To Gear series were pulled following the incident.

Millions of people in northern Europe have glimpsed the best solar eclipse in years on March 20.

A great swathe of the Earth’s surface was plunged into darkness as the Moon came between us and the Sun.

The deep shadow formed first in the North Atlantic and then swept up into the Arctic, ending at the North Pole.

People keen to catch a glimpse of the rare phenomenon were advised not to look directly at it.Solar eclipse 2015

Looking directly at the Sun can cause serious harm, and skywatchers were directed to the multiple ways to catch an eclipse safely and in comfort.

Many professional and amateur astronomers positioned themselves in the Faroe Islands, where the capital city of Torshavn got totality for a full two minutes, beginning just before 09:41 GMT.

Those who could not book a flight or a hotel for the Faroes went to Svalbard, where the capital city of Longyearbyen witnessed two and a half minutes of totality, starting shortly after 10:10 GMT.

Irrespective of the cloud cover, scientists said citizens could still help them with their research.

The next solar eclipse will occur on March 9, 2016, and will cross Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, and extend out over the Pacific.

Global Trade Peaking in Africa by Way of the Middle East

As the world economy becomes more globalized, developed nations are starting to look at those that are less wealthy as prime places to trade with and invest in. It is because of this that global trade is now starting to peak in Africa, a region long ignored when it came to trade agreements. One of the biggest leaders in the movement has been the Middle East. The nations in this area are starting to invest heavily in Africa for many reasons, along with forming trade agreements.

There are many reasons that Africa is being favored by Middle Eastern countries. The first, and major reason is that they are close by. Trading and working with another nation is much easier when the two of them are in close proximity, and this is certainly true for Africa and the Middle East. Working with someone who is nearby, or at least in a similar time zone, makes communicating and working with one another simpler and more efficient. Another benefit of close proximity is that the cultures are similar to one another. This again, makes it easier for the two places to communicate effectively.

Besides being close to one another, the Middle East is also full aware of the challenges that Africa is facing. For a long time, countries in the Middle East struggled to build infrastructure, along with training a capable workforce. Africa is facing many of the same problems now as new businesses are looking to expand into the region. A perfect example of this is Ras Al Khaimah, an area in the United Arab Emirates. The leader there, Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi has led initiatives to increase the education levels in his country to help improve polices and the workforce. Since similar actions are needed in Africa, leaders like this will be well versed in what is needed. By being familiar with the challenges, leaders in the Middle East can help these nations out and reaching trading agreements is much easier.

There are two more factors that have led to an increased trade level with Africa, along with heavier investments. First, is that since Africa is largely still developing, there is more potential for growth. By investing in an area that has more room to grow, you are increasing your chances of getting a bigger return for your investment. Secondly, the governments in Africa have been relatively stable over the past decade. In previous years there was a lot of turnover, making it hard to reach trade agreements since you didn’t know who would be in power in a year. Now, countries like the United States and ones inside Europe have been able to reach substantial trade agreements with Africa, ones that were not always possible in the past.

As time continues to go by, trading is becoming even healthier in Africa. No longer is the primary export the illegal ivory trade that has plagued the area for so long. Legal and legitimate trade is flowing from Africa to all corners of the world, thanks large in part to the leadership of the Middle East. Their heavy investments and trade agreements have been examples for the rest of the world to follow. As such, we are now starting to see global trade peaking in Africa like we never have before.

Amazon drone testing gets FAA approval

Amazon’s plans to begin testing drones for online deliveries have been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA has granted Amazon a certificate for people with pilot’s licenses to test the unmanned aircraft.

The drones must be flown at 400 ft or below during daylight hours, and must remain within sight of the pilot.

Under US law, operating drones for commercial purposes is illegal.

However, those rules are under revision by the FAA, which is expected to issue new rules regarding the operation of unmanned aircraft for commercial and recreational purposes.Amazon Prime Air drone testing

Amazon had asked the FAA for approval to begin the tests in July 2014.

In December 2014, the company warned that it might begin testing the program – known as Amazon Air – in other countries.

“Without approval of our testing in the United States, we will be forced to continue expanding our Prime Air R&D footprint abroad,” wrote Paul Misener, Amazon’s vice president of global public policy, in a letter to the FAA at the time.

As part of this ruling, Amazon must also provide data on the number of flights conducted and any other relevant information, on a monthly basis.

Amazon announced in December 2013 that it was going to begin trialing delivery to some customers by drone.

Chinese internet giant Alibaba, Google and parcel service UPS are among other companies carrying out more private trials of drones.

Eric Garner’s death: Grand Jury testimony will remain secret in chokehold case

New York Judge William Garnett has refused to make public the evidence a grand jury heard about Eric Garner’s death in a police “chokehold”.

Judge William Garnett said those suing did not make a “compelling and particularized need” to release the records, which are usually kept secret.

The jury did not charge Officer Daniel Pantaleo for Eric Garner’s death.

Eric Garner’s death, alongside other similar cases, led to nationwide protests over police brutality.

The black man was stopped by police for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes in Staten Island in August and placed in a chokehold by Daniel Pantaleo.

In a witness video, Eric Garner, who had asthma, is heard saying “I can’t breathe”. A city medical officer later ruled the death a homicide stemming from the effects of the chokehold.Eric Garner Grand Jury testimony

The New York Civil Liberties Union and other groups who argued for the records’ release said there was a need to reconcile the widely watched video of the arrest with the decision not to indict.

Richmond County District Attorney Daniel Donovan said those who testified had an expectation of secrecy, and making their testimony public could damage the credibility of prosecutors in the future.

In statement on March 19, Daniel Donovan’s office said: “We respect and will adhere to Judge Garnett’s well-reasoned decision.”

Similar records were released for a Missouri grand jury investigating the death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson.

St Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch released the records, with witness names redacted, after the jury declined to charge Officer Darren Wilson for the killing of Michael Brown, 18.
