Modern Offices: How Easy Is It to Get Work Done?

Many tech companies take the “all work and no play” philosophy to the next level by providing all kinds of cool things for their employees to enjoy during work time. LinkedIn Australia is no exception. Their newly revamped headquarters in Sydney features a fitness center, indoor BBQ and arcade games, which is pretty much what Google, Apple and Facebook already offer their employees, so how on earth does anyone ever get any work done in these places?

Offices used to be sterile environments where grey people wearing suits sat hunched over computers all day long. Apart from a brief trip to make a coffee or pass by the water cooler, it was an uneventful life and the only bit of excitement most office workers had was when the sandwich lady stopped by before lunch.

Shaking it Up

Modern companies have shaken it up a great deal in the last few years. In an attempt to attract younger, hipper employees, office space has slowly been transformed into a youth-friendly environment where video gaming, hoody wearing tech geniuses spend their time playing at being a grown up.

Modern Workplaces: Campus Style

Facebook’s HQ has been likened to a university campus – it has a noodle bar, an art and design lab, a barber’s shop, a room full of free, organic food, a climbing wall and a music room. The building was creatively designed to encourage people from different departments to interact with one another. Google’s workspace is just as funky. There are scooters and a cool monkey ladder in the Google New York office whereas the YouTube office has padded cell meeting rooms and an employee slide.

Bright Young Things

All of this may seem a bit “far out” but it is the way forward if you want to entice bright young things into your company. So how can you transform your office space into a cool playground for grown ups?

The thing with office spaces is that they do need to be functional. Employees need desks and there has to be storage cupboard space for files, HP printer parts and boxes of paperclips. You will also need space for meetings and a kitchen area. Beyond that, it is time to think outside the box and create an environment where people enjoy spending time.

Design a Collaborative Working Environment

Take a leaf out of Facebook’s vibe. It is a great idea to design a more collaborative environment where employees can bounce ideas around and (hopefully) come up with some great new ones. Setting aside a communal games room or chill-out zone can be useful in this regard. Plug in a games console, bring in a pool table, or leave a scrabble board out. Anything that encourages people to chat and interact is good.

Modern workplaces don’t have to be boring. You may be concerned that your employees won’t get anything done if there are too many distractions, but the opposite is probably true. The more fun the workplace is, the more time they will spend there. Isn’t that a good thing?

MH370: Second Plane Debris Washed Ashore on Reunion

A second piece of plane suspected to come from the missing flight MH370 has washed ashore on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion.

A wing part was also found on July 29.

The object, believed to be the door of an aircraft, was discovered just south of the city of St Denis.

It is said to have writing on it and possibly some illustration.

The first piece of wreckage has gone to France, where investigators in the city of Toulouse will seek to establish if it came from MH370.

It is believed to be a wing flap from a Boeing 777 – the same type of aircraft as the one that vanished.

Fragments of a suitcase found on the same beach in St Andre are also to be examined.

Investigators will begin work on August 5.

An Australian-led search effort for the plane has been focused on a vast area of the southern Indian Ocean about 2,500 miles to the east of Reunion.

Authorities believe MH370 veered off course on the way to Beijing and crashed into the sea – but they do not know why.

The estimated last location of missing flight MH370 was based on “pings” sent from the aircraft that were detected by satellite.

However, no physical trace has been found.

Lynn Anderson has died in hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 67.

She was best known for her worldwide 1971 hit (I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden.

The country singer had been in hospital after suffering a heart attack on July 30.

The Grammy-winning singer had just returned from Italy and was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia.

Born in North Dakota and raised in Sacramento, California, Lynn Anderson was the daughter of two country songwriters and started performing at the age of six.Lynn Anderson dead at 67

In 1967, Lynn Anderson began a two-year television engagement on The Lawrence Welk Show, which led to a contract with Columbia Records in Nashville, the capital of country music.

She won a Grammy award for Rose Garden and was the Country Music Association’s female vocalist of the year in 1971.

“It was popular because it touched on emotions,” she told AP.

“It was perfectly timed. It was out just as we came out of the Vietnam years and a lot of people were trying to recover. This song stated that you can make something out of nothing. You take it and go ahead.”

Alongside her singing career, Lynn Anderson made a number of TV appearances with stars including Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby and John Wayne.

Lynn Anderson also appeared in episodes of the cop show Starsky and Hutch.

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have announced via Facebook that they are expecting a baby girl.

Facebook founder wrote on his page: “Priscilla and I have some exciting news: we’re expecting a baby girl!”

In his post, Mark Zuckerberg, 31, revealed that they had suffered three miscarriages previously, but added that the risk of miscarrying at this stage of the pregnancy was low.

He said that they had decided to share the experience to help others in a similar situation.

“We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories.

“Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you – as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.”

Mark Zuckerberg also referenced the popular “Like” feature on the social network.

“In our ultrasound, she even gave me a thumbs up <<like>> with her hand, so I’m already convinced she takes after me,” he wrote.

Mark Zuckerberg did not say when the baby was due.

PKK Suicide Attack Kills Turkish Troops near Iraq Border

A PKK suicide attack has killed two Turkish security troops and wounded other 24 near the town of Dogubayazit in Agri province, close to Turkey’s border with Iran, the regional governor’s office says.

A tractor laden with explosives was driven at a military police station, reports by Turkish media say.

Since July 24, Turkey has carried out hundreds of air raids on PKK bases on both sides of the Iraq-Turkey border.

The Turkish state news agency, Anadolu, said that the attack happened at around 03:00 local time.

It said that the tractor was carrying two tons of explosives that were detonated by a suicide bomber.

The regional governor did not say how the PKK had been identified as the group behind the blast. The PKK has not commented.

AFP said it would be the first time the Kurdish militants were accused of deploying a suicide bomber during recent clashes.

Turkey’s official news agency says about 260 Kurdish fighters have been killed in strikes in northern Iraq and Turkey since July 24. It has also targeted positions held by the Islamic State group, known as ISIS.

Further Turkish air raids were reported early on Saturday, this time in the Rawanduz area east of Erbil, capital of Iraq’s Kurdish region.

At least six people were killed and several more wounded in the town of Zarkel, local officials said. They reportedly included at least two women.

Turkey considers both the PKK and ISIS terrorist organizations.

The PKK was established in 1978 and called for an independent state within Turkey – a country that now has 15 million Kurds.

In 1984, the PKK began an armed struggle.

Since then, more than 40,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced, but in 2012, the government and PKK began peace talks and the following year a ceasefire was agreed.

Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, has been laid to rest amid new family drama.

Her father, Bobby Brown, emerged from the funeral service, staring toward the ground before lifting his head up and briefly gazing at the sky.

Dressed in all black, Bobby Brown was one of the first to exit the tension-filled private memorial service for Bobbi Kristina on August 1 at the St. James United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only child of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, died in hospice care July 26, nearly six months after she was found face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub at her townhome on January 31.

Several celebrities showed up for the funeral including filmmaker Tyler Perry, Grammy-winning R&B singer Monica and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

In the middle of the service Bobby Brown’s sister Leolah Brown walked out of the church and spoke to reporters gathered outside. She said she was angry because Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law and former manager Pat Houston was speaking at the funeral.

“I told her that Whitney is going to haunt her from the grave,” Leolah Brown told reporters outside the church.

Leolah Brown suggested that the feud between the Houstons and the Browns was far from over.

“It’s just getting started,” she said before going back inside the church.

For years, there’s been a longstanding rift between the families of Bobbi Kristina Brown’s famous mother and father. Bobby Brown briefly appeared at Whitney Houston’s funeral three years ago, saying he and his children were seated but asked repeatedly to move. Bobbi Kristina’s death was grimly similar to the way her mother had died three years earlier.

Whitney Houston’s assistant found the pop icon’s lifeless body face-down in a foot of water in her bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel just before the Grammy Awards in 2012. Authorities found prescription drugs in the suite, and evidence of heart disease and cocaine in her body, but determined her death was an accidental drowning.

Her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was found in the Atlanta home she shared with Nick Gordon, an orphan three years older, whom Whitney Houston had raised as her own. A police report earlier this year described the incident as a drowning, and authorities are investigating her death.

Relations between Nick Gordon and other relatives have soured over the past few years, especially after Bobbi Kristina Brown was hospitalized. A protective order barred him from being within 200 feet of Pat Houston. And a feud erupted over whether Nick Gordon could visit Bobbi Kristina Brown while she stayed in the hospital.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said he and his office are interested in reviewing the investigative file to determine whether any charges will be filed.

Leolah Brown said she believes Nick Gordon was involved in the death of Bobbi Kristina Brown.

The rap star, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was travelling through an airport in Calabria, southern Italy, where he had been performing.

Sums of more than €10,000 ($11,000) must be declared by anyone travelling through airports in the European Union.

Last week, Snoop Dogg was stopped on suspicion of possessing drugs by police in Uppsala, Sweden.

He criticized what he said was “racial profiling” but Swedish police say they have yet to receive the results of tests to see whether Snoop Dogg had drugs in his system.

After stopping him on July 31 as he prepared to board a private plane, Italian police seized half of the $422,000 under money laundering laws, the state news agency Ansa reported.

It is now likely to be returned, with a fine deducted, the Italian financial police say.

Andrea Parisi, a lawyer representing Snoop Dogg, told Reuters: “We clarified everything from a legal point of view. The money came from concerts he had performed around Europe. There was no crime; it was just an administrative infraction.”

Snoop Dogg is scheduled to play the Kendal Calling festival in northern England on August 2.

The rapper has not responded to his latest detention and his current whereabouts are unconfirmed.

The outburst reflects the continuing tensions in Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family even after her death.

“I didn’t like that, so I left… I just told her that Whitney is going to haunt her from the grave.”

British Airways Cuts Cabin Luggage Allowance

British Airways has announced it is cutting the cabin luggage allowance for customers on its flights.

The maximum size of main carry-on bags will remain unchanged, but smaller second bags such as handbags will be capped at 40x30x15cm, British Airways said.British Airways cabin luggage allowance

British Airways said there had been “an increase in customers travelling with hand baggage that exceeds their allowance” in recent months.

The change will come into force “in the coming weeks”, the airline added.

Currently, passengers can board flights carrying one bag of up to 56x45x25cm, weighing up to 23kg, plus another bag up to 45x36x20cm.

A British Airways spokesman said the new guidelines – which apply to all customers – meant the latter changing “ever so slightly”.

He said overloading of hand baggage caused delays as staff removed bags from the cabin.

Last month, a teenager from Scotland collapsed with heat exhaustion after wearing 12 layers of clothing to avoid paying a £45 ($72) extra luggage fee.

Afghan militant leader Jalaluddin Haqqani died at least a year ago, the BBC reported.

It appears the founder of the Haqqani network died after a long illness and was buried in Afghanistan.

Rumors about Jalaluddin Haqqani’s death have circulated for some years and can still not be independently confirmed.

The latest report comes a day after the Taliban acknowledged that its leader, Mullah Omar, was dead.

Reports of Jalaluddin Haqqani’s death, quoting Taliban sources, also appeared in Pakistani media on July 31. One senior Afghan official said he had died six years ago.

The network has never confirmed the death of its founder.

However, a man linked to the family denied reports, telling the BBC that Jalaluddin Haqqani was still alive but ill.

The Haqqani network – based in the tribal regions of Pakistan with links to al-Qaeda and the Taliban – has been behind many of the co-ordinated attacks on Afghan and NATO forces in recent years.

Jalaluddin Haqqani’s son, Sirajuddin Haqqani, has long been thought to be in de facto control of the group and has just been announced as a deputy leader of the Taliban.

Jalaluddin Haqqani was an Afghan guerrilla leader who fought Soviet troops that occupied Afghanistan in 1980s.

US officials have admitted that at the time Jalaluddin Haqqani was a prized asset of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

However, Jalaluddin Haqqani later allied himself to the Taliban after they took power in Afghanistan in 1996.

Jalaluddin Haqqani served as a cabinet minister under the Taliban’s supreme leader, Mullah Omar.

The Haqqani network was one of several militant groups that operated from the tribal areas along the Afghan-Pakistan border following the US-led military campaign in Afghanistan, which began in 2001.

As the Haqqanis grew in strength, Pakistan’s security establishment was accused of secretly supporting the group, although it has strongly denied this.

Analysts say the Haqqani network has always been part of the Taliban and its members accepted Mullah Omar as their leader.

On July 30, the Taliban said they had appointed their deputy leader, Mullah Akhtar Mansour, as successor to Mullah Omar.

Correspondents say the move is likely to divide the group and that many senior figures opposed the appointment.

Ebola vaccine VSB- EBOV has led to 100% protection and could transform the way the virus is tackled, preliminary results suggest.

There were no proven drugs or vaccines against Ebola virus at the start of the largest outbreak of the disease in history, which began in Guinea in December 2013.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said the findings, being published in the Lancet, could be a “game-changer”.

Experts said the results were “remarkable”.

This trial centered on the VSV-EBOV vaccine, which was started by the Public Health Agency of Canada and then developed by the pharmaceutical company Merck.Ebola vaccine VSV EBOV

It combined a fragment of the Ebola virus with another safer virus in order to train the immune system to beat Ebola.

A unique clinical trial took place in Guinea. When a patient was discovered, their friends, neighbors and family were vaccinated to create a “protective ring” of immunity.

One hundred patients were identified in the trial between April and July and then close contacts were either vaccinated immediately, or three weeks later.

In the 2,014 close contacts who were vaccinated immediately there were no subsequent cases of Ebola.

In those vaccinated later there were 16 cases, according to the results published in the Lancet medical journal.

The WHO says it is so far 100% effective, although that figure may change as more data is collected.

Close contacts of Ebola patients in Guinea will now be vaccinated immediately. Since the vaccine has been shown to be safe the process will also be extended to include children.

Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) is involved with this research, and is part of a parallel trial for frontline healthcare workers.

Medical director Bertrand Draguez said the Lancet results should spur instant action.

“With such high efficacy, all affected countries should immediately start and multiply ring vaccinations to break chains of transmission and vaccinate all frontline workers to protect them.”

One of the first considerations when picking a pair is your skin tone. Wearing briefs that closely match your skin tone is a practical choice when you’re wearing light colored pants or shorts. They tend to skew toward the more transparent, and you want to find underwear that’s subtle and won’t show through whites, khakis, and other light shades. If you’re wearing slimmer fitting pants in particular, this is definitely something you should take into consideration.

American dentist Walter Palmer, who killed Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe, should be extradited to face charges, Zimbabwe’s Environment Minister Oppah Muchinguri has said.

His extradition was being sought so that he could “be held accountable for his illegal action,” she said.

Walter Palmer, from Minnesota, is believed to have paid about $50,000 to hunt the lion.

He says he thought the hunt was legal and was unaware Cecil was protected.

At a news conference in the capital, Harare, Oppah Muchinguri referred to Walter Palmer as a “foreign poacher”.

“As we frantically try to protect our wildlife from organized gangs such as this one, there are people… who can connive to undermine Zimbabwean laws,” she said.

“One can conclude with confidence that Dr Palmer, being an American citizen, had a well-orchestrated agenda which would tarnish the image of Zimbabwe and further strain the relationship between Zimbabwe and the USA,” Oppah Muchinguri added.

She also said Walter Palmer’s use of a bow and arrow against Cecil was in contravention of Zimbabwean hunting regulations, Reuters reports.

Two Zimbabwean men have been implicated in the death of the lion.

A professional hunter has been charged with failing to prevent an illegal hunt – which he denies – and prosecutors are deciding on the exact charges the landowner should face.

There has been a huge online backlash against Walter Palmer. The dental practice he runs in Minneapolis has been closed since he was named as the hunter who shot Cecil.

On July 30, the White House said it would review a public petition to extradite the American dentist after more than 100,000 signed it.

However, spokesman Josh Earnest said it was up to the DoJ to respond to any extradition order.

According to a new research, HIV can be flushed out of its hiding places in the body using PEP005 – one of the ingredients in a treatment to prevent cancer in sun-damaged skin.

The cornerstone of treatment, anti-retroviral therapy, kills the virus in the bloodstream but leaves “HIV reservoirs” untouched.

The study, published in PLoS Pathogens, showed PEP005 was “highly potent” at reactivating hidden HIV.

The power of the HIV reservoir was shown with the case of the Mississippi baby.

The baby girl was given antiretroviral drugs at birth. Despite appearing to be free of HIV for nearly two years after stopping treatment, she was found to be harboring the virus.

A strategy known as “kick and kill” is thought to be key to curing HIV – the kick would wake up the dormant HIV allowing the drugs to kill it.

The team at the Davis School of Medicine investigated PEP005. They tested the drug in cells grown in the laboratory and in parts of the immune system taken from 13 people with HIV.

The report said “PEP005 is highly potent in reactivating latent HIV” and that the chemical represents “a new group of lead compounds for combating HIV”.

One of the researchers, Dr, Satya Dandekar, said: “We are excited to have identified an outstanding candidate for HIV reactivation and eradication that is already approved and is being used in patients.

“This molecule has great potential to advance into translational and clinical studies.”

However, PEP005 has still not been tested in people who are HIV-positive.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has launched an investigation into the killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe but say they have been unable to reach dentist Walter Palmer.

The FWS said it was “deeply concerned” about the “tragic” death of one of Africa’s most famous lions.

Director Dan Ashe said they will “go where facts lead” but efforts to reach Walter Palmer have been unsuccessful.

Walter Palmer says he thought the hunt was legal but two Zimbabwean men have been arrested over Cecil’s death.

The dental practice Walter Palmer runs in Minneapolis has been closed since he was named as the tourist who shot Cecil, Zimbabwe’s most famous lion.

Protesters gathered outside the building on July 29, carrying placards saying “Justice for Cecil”, “Trophy hunters are cowards” and “Prosecute poachers”.

On July 30, the White House said it would review a public petition to extradite Walter Palmer after more than 100,000 signed it.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it was up to the US justice department to respond to any extradition order.

Earlier, the FWS said: “We are currently gathering facts about the issue and will assist Zimbabwe officials in whatever manner requested.”

“It is up to all of us – not just the people of Africa – to ensure that healthy, wild populations of animals continue to roam the savannah for generations to come,” the statement said.

The whereabouts of Walter Palmer is currently unknown, but he is thought to have returned to the US after Cecil was killed on July 1st.

In a letter to his patients, Walter Palmer said he would assist authorities in Zimbabwe or the US in their inquiries and apologized for the disruption to the clinic.

He is believed to have paid about $50,000 to go on the hunt in Zimbabwe.

Prosecutors in Zimbabwe have charged the hunter who supervised Walter Palmer’s outing, Theo Bronkhorst, for killing a lion not authorized to be hunted. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Zimbabwe’s safari organization also said the way in which Cecil was lured out of a national park was unethical and possibly illegal.

A second suspect, farm owner Honest Ndlovu, was also arrested but is yet to be charged.

An international hunting organization suspended the memberships of both Walter Palmer and Theo Bronkhorst on July 30, saying it wanted a “full and thorough investigation” into the lion’s death.

Safari Club International, which promotes big-game hunting worldwide, said “those who intentionally take wildlife illegally should be prosecuted and punished to the maximum extent allowed by law”.

Cecil, who was a major tourist attraction at Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve in Hwange National Park, was being monitored by Oxford University as part of a conservation program.

The lion is believed to have died on July 1st, but the carcass was not discovered until a few days later.

Malaysia PM Najib Razak has announced that debris found on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion is to be transported to France to find out whether it is from the missing airliner MH370.

Initial reports suggest the 2-meter long wreckage is very likely to be from a Boeing 777, the prime minister said.

Malaysia Airlines’ flight MH370 is the only Boeing 777 to have disappeared over an ocean.

There were 239 people on board when the plane went missing in March 2014.

Razak Najib said French authorities were taking the debris to the southern French city of Toulouse – the site of the nearest office of the French body responsible for air accident investigations (the BEA) – to verify it as quickly as possible.

Najib Razak said the location was “consistent with the drift analysis provided to the Malaysian investigation team”.

Aviation experts who have studied photos of the debris found on Reunion on July 29 say it does resemble a flaperon – a moving part of the wing surface – from a Boeing 777.

On July 30, a municipal employee found what appeared to be a very badly damaged suitcase on the Reunion coast, according to local media.

The item was found at Saint-Andre, the same location as the earlier debris.

Reunion, a French overseas department, is about 370 miles east of Madagascar.

The search efforts for MH370, led by Australia, are focused on a broad expanse of the southern Indian Ocean – around 2,500 miles to the east of Reunion.

After MH370 disappeared from radar screens, experts analyzed data from faint “pings” the aircraft sent to satellites to narrow down its last known location.

It was this information that identified the search area in the southern Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said: “We have noticed the reports and are wasting no time in obtaining and checking the information.”

More than half of those on board the missing plane were Chinese citizens.

A group of relatives of many of the Chinese passengers said in a statement that they wanted “100%” certainty about where the part is from, and that the search for the airliner should continue.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will front three series of a new motoring show for Amazon Prime, with the first season to be made available worldwide in 2016.

The move follows the team’s departure from Top Gear earlier this year.

Jeremy Clarkson’s contract was not renewed following an “unprovoked physical attack” on a Top Gear producer.

His co-hosts then followed him in leaving the show.

In a statement from Amazon, Jeremy Clarkson said: “I feel like I’ve climbed out of a biplane and into a spaceship.”

The Amazon deal is part of a company’s plan to compete with traditional broadcasters and streaming rivals like Netflix.

Amazon has also signed up Woody Allen to make his first television series; resurrected drama Ripper Street after it was canceled by the BBC; and won awards and acclaim for its dark comedy Transparent.

Meanwhile, Top Gear will continue on BBC Two, with Chris Evans among the new hosts.
