4 Stories of Magic Surrealism: When Dreams Echo Reality

Maravilloso real or magic surrealism is a style of writing largely associated with Latin America, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Columbian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of the most prominent literary figures for the genre, along with Isabel Allende and Jorge Luis Borges, among others. Stories that employ the magic surrealism often depict unbelievable or unsettling events or characters in a realistic way. Haven’t read much yet in the way of genre classics? Here are a few pieces to serve as an excellent introduction to the style:

Two Words by Isabel Allende

This is a short story about Belisa Crepusculario, a young woman who sells words for a living. The narrative starts out with a description of how life began for Belisa, born to a family so poor they didn’t even have names for their children. We see her survive her family’s deaths, wandering around, and finally finding salvation in an old newspaper: she finally learns what words are and finds a priest to teach her how to read and write. That’s how she honed her craft. And so one august morning, we see her carried off by a soldier and brought to camp because the dreaded leader, Colonel, wanted to be president. And he needed a speech. And who better to provide that than a woman who sells words? From there, the story unfolds in a simple but absorbing way. When Belisa finally finishes the speech and renders all the men at camp in tears, she’s let go and paid for her services. But before she goes, she offers two secrets words for the Colonel alone.

From town to town, we see the Colonel succeed, the speech giving the man the fame and support he needs. But the Colonel himself doesn’t see that, repeating the secret words over and over. So the solider captures Belisa again, this time and brings her to the Colonel, this time to demand that the Colonel give back the two words. Read the story and find out how it ends. It’s a wonderful tale about the spellbinding power of words, of how a speech can sway an entire nation or a mere two mere words steal your heart. If you haven’t downloaded this yet, no worries. Plenty of online bookstores carry it. Nook Ebook store offers classics on its list. So browse through the selection and download the whole book.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

While Kafka wrote other stories representative of the genre—like The Hunger Artist, The Judgment—it is, perhaps, The Metamorphosis that remains one of the most well-known of his works, possibly due to the tone of the material. It starts off with Gregor Samsa waking up one day to discover he has turned into an insect, which according to a lot of sources, seems to be a beetle. The New Yorker describes it as a reference to a life that has gone out of control. Soon, he becomes a housekeeping problem for his family, who keeps him out of sight. Gregor is an anti-hero typical of Kafka’s works. Before his transformation, he was practically the family’s sole source of income. As a bug, Gregor is unable to work, much less speak to his family. However, he understands them quite clearly and when his father expresses the opinion that Gregor ought to simply leave, he retreats back to his room and dies. The writing is detailed, harrowing, and darkly amusing.

The Library of Babel by Jorge Luis Borges

Included in his famous collection, Ficciones, this short story about a library, a colossal collection of books arranged in a geometric fashion. The Paris Review says that the library contains all the possible permutation of 22 spaces, commas, letters as well as periods. It contains books of nonsense but it also contains, based on those permutations, all the books ever written or ever will be. Somewhere in the chaos, there’s that one book that contains all the names of the books in the library, like a magic master list and those caught in the library’s labyrinth are eager to chase after this book or the ‘Man of the Book,’ who they believe has read it. The story borrows elements from mathematics. If you’ve got a taste for the elusive and haunting, even challenging in your reading material, this one should pass the time quite nicely.

Super Frog Saves Tokyo

A remarkable story from of Haruki Murakami’s After the Quake collection, it’s about a frog who tries to persuade a bank teller to take on an evil worm in combat that promises to be a fight to the death. Where else can you find a frog that quotes Dostoevsky and Hemingway? Contemporary in tone and heart, the story is unquestionably set in the intensely dreamlike and metaphysical prose we associate with Murakami and his greatest works.

So if you haven’t dipped your toes yet in surrealist literature, here’s your chance. Read up on more surrealist stories and discover a world of dreams and reality woven together, a universe where everything and everyone is deliciously possible.

Ko Yong-suk: Kim Jong-un’s Aunt Files Defamation Case against North Korean Defectors

Kim Jong-un’s aunt, Ko Yong-suk has filed a defamation case against three North Korean defectors who “spread false stories” about her.

Ko Yong-suk claims the defectors – who fled to South Korea in the 1990s – lied about her having plastic surgery and managing a secret fund.

Her lawyer says she is seeking 60 million won ($51,600) in a South Korean court.

The move is unusual – ruling family members living outside North Korea tend to avoid the public eye.Kim Jong un aunt plastic surgery

The defectors appeared on talk shows and claimed that Ko Yong-suk used plastic surgery to hide after having Kim Jong-un’s half-brother expelled from North Korea, her lawyer said.

“These defectors who often make appearances on TV are not in a position to know about her directly and what they are saying is not true,” he told Reuters.

“She and her husband find it very unpleasant.”

Ko Yong-suk took asylum in the US with her husband in 1998. She took care of Kim Jong-un when he was a teenager studying in Switzerland, according to her lawyer.

It is not clear if she will appear in court.

Ko Yong-suk’s lawyer told AFP news agency: “I’m not 100% sure, but her husband indicated she could come.”

EU Refugee Crisis: Greece Could Be Suspended from Schengen Travel Zone

Greece has been threatened with Schengen suspension if the EU country fails to improve conditions for refugees, reports say.

EU officials accuse Greece of refusing to accept help in accepting more refugees. Greece would become the first country to be suspended since passport-free travel was established in 1985.

More than 740,000 people have arrived on the shores of Greece in 2015 before moving north across Europe.

A top EU official has warned that children are dying on Greek beaches because of a lack of medical help.

There is also anger that Greece has been slow to let in EU experts and improve its registration of refugees.

The influx of refugees across countries with few border restrictions has alarmed European leaders and raised doubts about the very future of the 1985 Schengen accord.Greece refugee crisis 2015

According to the Financial Times, Greece has been repeatedly warned this week that it could be suspended from the 26-member zone if it fails to take action before an EU leaders’ summit in mid-December.

Separately, unnamed officials in Brussels have said that a suspension has been discussed in recent days in an attempt to persuade the Athens government to improve its handling of migrants and refugees.

Greece is not only struggling to cope with the numbers of people arriving on the islands closest to Turkey such as Lesbos, but thousands of people are camped on the northern border with Macedonia, which has erected a fence to stop people crossing.

Greece’s EU partners are frustrated that the Athens government has been slow to accept offers of help from the border agency, Frontex, to better manage its sea border. The offer is particularly sensitive in Greece because of concerns over its national sovereignty.

While suspension from the Schengen accord would directly affect Greeks travelling to the 25 other members of the passport-free zone, it is unclear what effect it would have on the refugee crisis.

None of the Balkan countries on the refugee route between Greece and Hungary are part of Schengen.

Greek businesses are becoming increasingly concerned by the crisis on the Macedonian border because protests on the railway line have halted rail traffic.

Montenegro Invited to Join NATO

Montenegro has been invited to join NATO, in its first expansion for six years.

The decision, described by NATO head Jens Stoltenberg as “historic”, comes 16 years after the alliance bombed Montenegro during the Kosovo war, when it was still part of Yugoslavia.

Russia has reacted to the news. Montenegro’s accession would result in “retaliatory actions”, said a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Accession talks are expected to take about a year to complete.Montenegro NATO

The invitation to Montenegro is NATO’s first expansion into Eastern Europe since Albania and Croatia joined in 2009.

The mountainous Adriatic state of 650,000 people has a small military with about 2,000 active members.

NATO diplomats say it sends a message to Russia that it cannot veto the alliance’s expansion – but Russia has said it will retaliate.

“The continued eastward expansion of NATO and NATO’s military infrastructure cannot but result in retaliatory actions from the east, i.e. from the Russian side, in terms of ensuring security and supporting the parity of interests,” Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Dmitry Peskov added that it was too early to specify what the retaliatory actions would be.

Montenegrins themselves remain divided over joining.

Many remain angry that NATO bombed Serbia and Montenegro in 1999 as part of a strategy to halt the killing and expulsion of ethnic Albanians in Serbia’s then southern province of Kosovo.

Montenegro has also seen an influx of Russian money, homebuyers and tourists since splitting from Serbia in 2006.

Milo Djukanovic’s government – which is in favor of joining – has resisted calls from some opposition parties for a referendum on the issue.

However, NATO diplomats point to polls that suggest public opinion is narrowly in favor of joining.

Besides Montenegro and Georgia, the other current candidates for NATO membership are Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia.

Bank of China Facing Large Fine in US

The Bank of China is facing a daily fine in the US if it does not comply with a court request to give details of customers accused of selling fake goods.

The state-owned lender was held in contempt of court in Manhattan last week for refusing to turn over the records.

The bank is appealing the civil contempt order and fine of $50,000 a day starting on December 8.

The BOC said it would be violating China’s privacy law if it gave the information.

The records stem from a 2010 lawsuit by a group of luxury retailers including Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent that sued a group of Chinese companies for allegedly selling counterfeits goods like handbags.Bank of China fake luxury goods

The luxury brands had asked US district judge Richard Sullivan to order the BOC to pay $12 million to cover their losses from counterfeiting or impose a fine.

The judge had initially ordered the BOC to provide the customer information in 2011 and then renewed the order in September.

“BOC’s refusal to comply with US law, while it continues to receive the benefits attendant to its banking activity in the US, has inflicted a significant harm on plaintiffs and the general public,” Richard Sullivan said.

“Only a large fine will have a coercive effect on BOC at this stage.”

He has also ordered the top-four Chinese lender to cover the retailers’ legal costs.

But the BOC said the judge lacked the jurisdiction to force its compliance.

The BOC is China’s fourth biggest lender by assets and made a profit of nearly $28 billion in 2014.

Canadian Economy Exits Recession in Q3 2015

The Canadian economy emerged from recession in Q3 of 2015 after exports picked up, official figures show.

Canada’s GDP rose at an annualized rate of 2.3% compared with 2014.Canadian economy pulls out of recession

Higher consumer spending and a more buoyant housing market also added to growth.

On December 2, Canada’s central bank meets to decide the level of interest rates. The bank has cut rates twice this year to 0.5%.

Exports were 9.4% higher in the third quarter compared with 2014, boosted by demand for motor vehicles. Oil exports were also higher.

Previous figures showed GDP shrank by an annualized rate of 0.5% between April and June.

That followed a contraction of 0.8% in Q1, meaning the Canadian economy saw two consecutive quarters of negative growth, the usual definition of recession.

VW Emission Scandal: US Sales Fall 25% in November 2015

VW has seen its US sales decline sharply as a result of the continuing emissions scandal.

November sales were down by 24.7% from the previous year.

The German automaker said the drop reflected “the impact of the recent stop-sale for all 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI vehicles as well as for the 3.0L V6”.

VW was forced to stop selling 2 and 3 liter diesel engine cars after it was discovered they contained software that disguised emission levels.

The group sold fewer than 24,000 cars in November, with the Golf and Passat models seeing the steepest declines.VW US sales dieselgate

VW saw a very minor sales decline of 0.24% in October. The US is not a large market for Volkswagen. Even before the scandal it had struggled to gain traction in a market where larger SUVs and trucks are popular.

Volkswagen has admitted to installing devices that lowered the emissions levels of diesel engine cars during testing, but that increased emissions during normal driving.

VW CEO Matthias Muller has previously apologized for the scandal and said: “My most urgent task is to win back trust for the Volkswagen Group.”

Other automakers have seen a steady rise in US sales this year.

Sales of General Motors cars rose by 1.5% in November. Toyota and Fiat Chrysler each reported a 3% increase in their November sales compared with 2014.

Mark Zuckerberg to Donate 99% of Facebook Shares

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have announced they will give away 99% of their Facebook shares to good causes as they welcomed the birth of their daughter Max.

The new father made the announcement in a letter to daughter Max on his Facebook page.

Mark Zuckerberg said they are donating their fortune to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative because they want to make the world a better place for Max to grow up in.

The donation amounts to $45 billion at Facebook’s current value.

However, the shares will not be donated to charity immediately, but over the course of the couple’s lives.

Max Zuckerberg was born last week, although her birth was only made public on December 1.

In his letter, the Facebook founder said the aim of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is “to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation”.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.

“Your mother and I don’t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future,” Mark Zuckerberg said at the start of his letter to Max.

“You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in,” it added.

The letter highlighted the important role of technology in achieving the couple’s goals of advancing human potential and equality.

“Many of the greatest opportunities for your generation will come from giving everyone access to the internet,” Mark Zuckerberg wrote to his daughter.

The Facebook CEO said more details about the donation will be released once he and Priscilla Chan return from paternity and maternity leave.

Mark Zuckerberg, who Forbes estimate is worth some $46.8 billion, said he will remain chief executive of Facebook for “many, many years to come”.

In a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Facebook said that Mark Zuckerberg “plans to sell or gift no more than $1 billion of Facebook stock each year for the next three years and that he intends to retain his majority voting position…for the foreseeable future”.

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan Welcomes Baby Girl Max

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have welcomed baby girl Max.

Max Zuckerberg was born last week, although her birth was only made public on December 1.

Mark Zuckerberg has made the announcement in a Facebook post, accompanied by a Facebook Notes letter to the new little lady in his life.

In the letter, Mark Zuckerberg writes that he and Priscilla Chan will donate 99% of their Facebook shares – currently about $45 billion – over the course of their lives “to join many others in improving this world for the next generation”.

The new parents have also launched the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which has the broad mission of “advancing human potential” but will focus specifically on personalizing learning, curing disease, connecting people, and building strong communities.

In the letter, Mark Zuckerberg also laid out his vision for the world he hopes Max will inherit, a world in which Facebook plays an increasingly central role.

The letter covers Mark Zuckerberg’s passion for giving the world access to the Internet and the investments he and Priscilla Chan have made in education, and it paints a rosy view of a world that has felt utterly grim:

“While headlines often focus on what’s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today. We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation.”

Rudy Giuliani: Some New Yorkers Did Celebrate after 9/11

Ex-NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani has said there were “pockets” of people celebrating when the World Trade Center towers fell on September 11, 2001.

Rudy Giuliani, who was mayor at the time, disputed claims by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump that thousands of people were involved.

Donald Trump’s comments have been refuted by local political leaders because of a lack of evidence.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie simply said “it didn’t happen”.

Rudy Giuliani, who ran unsuccessfully for the 2008 Republican nomination himself, said: “We did have some [reports of] celebrations, there were pockets of celebration, some in Queens, some in Brooklyn.”

The former mayor said in one specific report which was later proved to be true, owners of a sweet shop were celebrating and children from a nearby housing development “beat them up”.

However, Rudy Giuliani said Donald Trump was willfully exaggerating the numbers and he himself “would’ve been thrown out of the race” had he made such an inflated claim during his 2008 campaign.Rudy Giuliani on 9-11 celebration

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik later backed up Rudy Giuliani’s comments, saying “10-50” people were reported to be celebrating in different areas throughout the city.

Donald Trump, who comes from New York and runs his billionaire property empire from the city, has come under constant attack for days, ever since he made his controversial 9/11 remarks at a rally in Alabama.

The mayor of Jersey City, which Donald Trump named, said no such thing happened and accused the Republican of “shameful politicizing”.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, his Republican rival in the race for the White House, said it was not true.

“It didn’t happen and the fact is, people can say anything, but the facts are the facts, and that didn’t happen in New Jersey that day and hasn’t happened since.”

Donald Trump leads the Republican race to be presidential nominee, two months before voting begins in the primary contests.

The Republican presidential hopeful has also urged increased surveillance of Muslims in the US, in light of the Paris terror attacks that killed 130 people.

Brazil Economy Shrinks in Q3 2015

Brazil’s recession has deepened as the country’s economy shrank by 1.7% in Q3 of 2015 compared with the previous quarter.

The country’s GDP dropped 4.5% on an annual basis as investments fell 15%.

Brazil’s unpopular President Dilma Rousseff has been trying to cut spending and raise taxes and this new fall in economic activity will make the latter harder.

Dilma Rousseff’s government is also entangled in a massive corruption scandal.Brazil recession 2015

The drop in economic activity was largely due to a drop in investment, which fell by 15% compared with a year ago.

That has been falling for nine quarters in a row.

Unemployment is at a six-year high and inflation is running at 10%, meaning household spending is being squeezed.

Brazil’s credit rating was cut to junk in September because of mounting political turmoil and the difficulties faced by Dilma Rousseff’s government in tackling growing debt.

The rating means most of the world’s major investors cannot lend to Brazil.

In September, the Brazilian government announced a $7 billion package of spending cuts aimed at plugging the huge black hole in the country’s 2016 budget.

Dilma Rousseff’s public approval rating has hit record lows.

Brazil’s economy has been depressed by the end of the global commodities boom, while a corruption scandal centered on state oil giant Petrobras has damaged investor confidence.

Accidents Happen: Living with Spinal Cord Trauma

0

Spinal cord trauma can result in injuries which are particularly difficult to treat and often very panful.   The spinal cord is one of the most vital organs in your body as it is responsible for the communication between the brain and the rest of your body. This miraculous organ is simply a long and thin bundle of tubular nerves filled with support cells, also known as stem cells. The combination of your brain and the spinal cord are known as the central nervous system which allows you to move around, speak, and feel your sense of touch. Without your spinal cord, there would be no connection between your brain and the rest of the nervous system, and depending on the location of the spinal injury you may never be able to feel the lower part of the trauma site again. This of course greatly depends on the treatment and recovery process after the injury has taken place as well as the amount of attention that is paid to the doctor’s specific instructions.

Trauma Occurrences and Stages

Injury or trauma to the spinal cord can happen at any moment and during just about any activity. Vehicle accidents are frequently the culprit with whiplash injuries to the spinal cord in the neck the result.  Even more serious spinal cord damage can be caused in accidents often associated with SUVs.  One of the most frequent causes of this kind of injury is the regrettably common event of a SUV rollover in an accident. These accidents will always end with an injured person being taken to the closest hospital or center that is equipped and ready to deal with spinal trauma. This is because the faster the person gets treated, the better their chances of recovering with as little impairment as possible, and as the chances of spinal damages are greater in these cases the faster treatment is available, the better.

There are two stages to spinal cord trauma, the first stage is considered the acute phase which is when the person first gets the spinal injury and the following few days of treatment. The second phase of spinal cord trauma is the rehabilitation phase which is when the injuries and other necessary information is explained to the injured person, assistance is provided with various everyday activities, and the injured begins to learn their new lifestyle as well as learn to become independent once more. Spinal trauma doesn’t only effect the physical aspects of the person though, it can also affect their mental health and stability as they feel as though their freedom was ripped away from them in a single flash of time.

The Acute Phase

Once the injured party has been taken to the closest and most equipped center in the area for spinal cord injuries, they will be given painkillers while they are being examined and treated.  Inevitably, spinal cord injuries can result in moderate to severe pain requiring, at least in the short term, serious pain medication such as codeine, morphine, or modern synthetic versions of these opioid medications. The doctor’s examination and testing will enable them find any and all broken bones, brain and spinal trauma as well as bruising, and the painkillers should provide you with some comfort at least while this is going on.

The Rehabilitation Phase

This is one of the most important parts of spinal cord trauma treatment, the recovery process. Recovery from this kind of injury can take a long time as the person isn’t only physically injured, but often emotionally and psychologically as well, especially if they face the prospect of living with permanent damage or loss of functionality. The first part of this treatment phase is helping the patient understand not only his or her injuries, but the details of their car, and the changes that their life has now taken on. This can also prepare them for the act of rehabilitation to learn to not only care for themselves but possible regain movement. This will all greatly depend on the location of the injury as well as the care that is not only given to the patient, but that the patient provides themselves. There is always hope when it comes to spinal damage, even though it is slim and the thought of sustaining an injury as severe as this can be earth shattering to anyone involved or who knows the patient.

Paris Attacks: US to Tighten Visa Waiver Program

The US State Department has announced it will tighten travel restrictions on foreigners who visit the country without needing full visas.

About 20 million people from 38 countries enter the United States each year under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

The move has come under increased scrutiny since last month’s attacks in Paris, with lawmakers expressing concern that militants could get into the US.

Under changes that are be submitted to Congress, all countries in the scheme would be asked to issue “e-passports”.US Visa Waiver Program after Paris attacks

Their registrations would come under greater scrutiny from US agencies, and travelers would also be screened to see if they had traveled to militant-held areas.

The Department of Homeland Security will also ask Congress for additional powers, including increase fines for airlines that fail to verify passport data.

The changes will “enhance our ability to thwart terrorist attempts to travel on lost or stolen passports”, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in Paris, where President Barack Obama is attending UN talks on climate change.

The Visa Waiver Program currently allows people from designated countries to visit the US for 90-day stays without getting a visa.

Several of the suspected perpetrators of the Paris terror attacks were from Belgium and France, which are countries on the list.

SU-24 Crash: Barack Obama Urges Turkey and Russia to End Dispute

President Barack Obama has urged Turkey and Russia to end their dispute, a week after Turkish forces shot down a Russian warplane.

After talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Paris, Barack Obama reaffirmed US support for “Turkey’s right to defend itself and its airspace”.

However, the US president stressed that Russia and Turkey should “de-escalate” their dispute.

“We all have a common enemy,” Barack Obama said, referring to ISIS.Barack Obama on Russian warplane downing

“I want to make sure that we focus on that threat,” he said.

“Turkey is a NATO ally,” Barack Obama added.

“And we’re very much committed to Turkey’s security and its sovereignty. We discussed how Turkey and Russia can work together to de-escalate tensions and find a diplomatic path to resolve this issue.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan also spoke to reporters after December 1 meeting. He said his government wanted to reduce tensions and was “determined to keep up the fight” against ISIS.

Barack Obama and Recep Tayyip Erdogan are among 150 leaders attending climate change talks in Paris.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan renewed his criticism of Russian air strikes against Turkmen rebels in north-western Syria, complaining that the area is being “continuously bombed”.

Moscow says Turkey shot down its SU-24 warplane inside Syria on November 24.

Turkey says the fighter jet entered its airspace and was repeatedly warned to leave before it was downed.

Russia has insisted its warplane did not cross the border and that it gave advance notice of the flight path to the US.

One Russian pilot was killed and the other rescued. A Russian marine was killed during the rescue operation.

Russia is a major ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and its air strikes have targeted rebel groups, including ISIS.

Turkey strongly opposes Bashar al-Assad and has been accused of turning a blind eye to jihadist fighters crossing from its territory into Syria.

SU-24 Crash: Turkey Asks Russia to Prove ISIS Oil Trade Claim

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has asked Russia to prove its claim that Ankara shot down a Russian fighter jet in order to protect its oil trade with ISIS.

“If you allege something you should prove it,” he said.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan was responding to a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin saying that Turkey downed the jet as it was flying over Syria.

Turkey says the warplane entered its airspace and was warned to leave.

One Russian pilot was killed and the other rescued after Russia’s Su-24 bomber was shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter on the Syrian border on November 24.

A Russian marine was killed during the rescue operation in north-western Syria.

Russia has insisted the fighter jet did not cross the border and that it gave advance notice of the flight path to the US, Turkey’s ally.

The US has supported Turkey’s version of events.

“You should put your documents on the table if you have any. Let’s see the documents,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

“We are acting with patience. It is not positive for the two countries which have reached a position which could be regarded as a strategic partnership to make emotional statements.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan also vowed to step down if the allegation that Turkey was buying oil from ISIS proved true, suggesting that President Vladimir Putin should do the same if he was wrong.

Russia is a major ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and its air strikes have targeted rebel groups, including ISIS.

Turkey strongly opposes Bashar al-Assad and has been accused of turning a blind eye to jihadist fighters crossing from its territory into Syria.

Until a few months ago, Turkey was reluctant to play an active role in the coalition against ISIS. However, in August it allowed the US-led coalition to begin using its airbase at Incirlik.

Russia has imposed sanctions on Turkey over the downing of the warplane, including restrictions on imports of Turkish food and an end to visa-free travel.

ISIS earns much of its money from illegal oil fields it controls in north-eastern Syria and western Iraq.

Some of the oil is sold to the Assad regime and some is smuggled through middlemen to Turkey. However, the Turkish government has consistently denied being involved in the trade.

“We have every reason to think that the decision to shoot down our plane was dictated by the desire to protect the oil supply lines to Turkish territory,” Vladimir Putin said at a news conference in Paris on November 30.

Vladimir Putin also accused Turkey of harboring “terrorist organizations” operating “in various regions of Russia, including the North Caucasus”.

AirAsia Flight 8501: Faulty Component and Crew Action Caused Plane Crash

According to Indonesian officials, a faulty component was a “major factor” when an AirAsia plane crashed into the Java Sea in December 2014, killing 162 people.

The first major report into the crash found that actions by the crew in response to the malfunction also contributed to the disaster.

The Airbus A320-200, going from Surabaya to Singapore, was 40 minutes into the flight when contact was lost.

The report is the result of a year-long investigation.

Investigators had initially indicated that bad weather was a major factor in the crash.

However, the new report has found that the soldering on a tiny electronic part in the system that controlled the rudder was cracked, causing it to send four warning signals to the pilots.

The crew tried to fix the problem by resetting the computer, but this disabled the autopilot. They then lost control of the plane.

The AirAsia plane then entered “a prolonged stall condition that was beyond the capability of the flight crew to recover,” said Indonesia’s national transport safety committee.

Maintenance crews were aware of the problem as it had occurred 23 times in 2014, and resetting the system was one of several methods used previously to address it, the report said.

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes thanked investigators on Twitter and added that “there is much to be learned here for AirAsia, the manufacturer and the aviation industry”.

“We will not leave any stone unturned to make sure the industry learns from this tragic incident.”

The plane’s wreckage was found days after the crash at the bottom of the Java Sea near Borneo.

Most of the passengers were Indonesian, and others on board included a Frenchman, a Singaporean, a Malaysian, a Briton, and three South Koreans.

Only 106 bodies have been retrieved so far.

The AirAsia crash capped a year of major air disasters including the disappearance of MH370 and the shooting of MH17- both flights operated by Malaysia Airlines.

Queen Elizabeth II Jokes with New Canadian PM Justin Trudeau

Queen Elizabeth II joked that she is made to feel old by the new Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, aged 43, after he spoke of her historic visits to Canada.

Justin Trudeau had earlier toasted the 89-year-old Queen at a banquet for the leaders of Commonwealth countries, taking place in Malta.

He referred to the Queen’s trips to Canada, including one in 1982 when she was welcomed by his father – the former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

The Queen, flashing a sense of humor, gave a witty and cheeky reply to Justin Trudeau’s toast, saying: “Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister of Canada, for making me feel so old!”

Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to explain his view, saying “on the contrary, you are forever young”.

Freddie Gray Trial: Jury Selection Begins for Officer William Porter

0

Jury selection for the first officer to go to trial over the death of Freddie Gray has begun in Baltimore.

Freddie Gray’s death in police custody set off days of protests.

Officer William Porter is charged with manslaughter, accused of failing to give medical help to Gray despite complaints and warning signs.

Freddie Gray sustained a severe spinal cord injury while riding in a police van and died a week later.

The case became a lightning rod in the US movement against police brutality.Officer William Porter Freddie Gray death trial

William Porter is one of six police officers charged over Freddie Gray’s death. All have pleaded not guilty. They will be tried separately and prosecutors hope to use William Porter as a witness in the other trials.

The case has already shaken Baltimore. After the riots, some police union police officials said the Gray case made officers “hesitant” to stop crime.

In a media campaign, police officials publically criticized the mayor and the city council, saying the force lacked their support.

City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts has been fired and the once-popular Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has agreed not to run for election in the ensuing fallout. The city recently surpassed 300 murders within a year for the first time since 1999.

“Everything is at stake. The future of the city is at stake,” Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said.

Finding an impartial jury is expected to be difficult given how Freddie Gray’s death affected the city. A Baltimore judge denied a defense request for a change of venue in September.

SU-24 Crash: Russia Accuses Turkey of Downing Jet for ISIS Oil

0

Russia is accusing Turkey of shooting down its fighter jet on the Syrian border in order to protect its oil trade with ISIS.

Speaking at international talks on climate change in Paris, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the warplane’s downing a “huge mistake”.

Turkey has denied any ties to ISIS and is part of a US-led coalition carrying out airstrikes against the militant group.

The Turkish government has refused to apologize for the incident.

One Russian pilot was killed and the other rescued following the crash on November 24. Turkey says the plane entered its air space – an accusation Russia denies.

On November 30, the US state department said evidence from Turkish and US sources indicated the aircraft did violate Turkish airspace.

Spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said the US wanted to “encourage dialogue now… we need to de-escalate the situation”.

Russia has been carrying out air strikes in Syria, targeting rebels against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, including ISIS.

Turkey is a vehement opponent of Bashar al-Assad and has been accused of turning a blind eye to jihadist fighters crossing from its territory into Syria.

Until a few months ago, Turkey was reluctant to play an active role in the coalition against ISIS. However, in August it allowed the US-led coalition to begin using its airbase at Incirlik.

Russia has imposed sanctions on Turkey over the downing of the plane, including restrictions on imports of Turkish food and an end to visa-free travel.

ISIS earns much of its money from illegal sales of oil – however, Turkey has staunchly denied that it is involved in the trade.

“We have every reason to think that the decision to shoot down our plane was dictated by the desire to protect the oil supply lines to Turkish territory,” Vladimir Putin said at a news conference in Paris on November 30.

The Russian president said his president had received more information to show that ISIS oil was passing through Turkish territory.

Earlier Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu said the incident was unfortunate but that Turkey had a right and duty to protect its airspace and would not apologize.

On November 30, Russia said it would ban mainly imports of agricultural products, vegetables and fruits from Turkey, although it may delay the restrictions for several weeks to “ease inflationary pressure”.

Turkish industrial goods would not be banned for now but future expansion of the sanctions was not ruled out, officials said.

Turkey and Russia have important economic links. Russia is Turkey’s second-largest trading partner, while more than three million Russian tourists visited Turkey in 2014.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey will act “patiently, not emotionally” before deciding its response to the economic sanctions.

Prime Air: Jeremy Clarkson Presents Amazon’s Drone Delivery Project

Former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has unveiled Amazon’s drone delivery project Prime Air.

In a video of the new prototype, the drone could fly for up to 15 miles and deliver a parcel within 30 minutes of the order being placed.

There was no indication of when it might be used by the retail giant.

Amazon was given permission to test delivery drones in the US earlier this year.

The company also has drone delivery development centers in the UK and Israel.

Prime Air will be part of a “family” of delivery aircraft, Jeremy Clarkson said in the clip, and is one of around a dozen devices Amazon is developing.

The drone is equipped with “sense and avoid technology” and can fly at a height of 400 feet.

Amazon said it would not launch the service until it was able to “demonstrate safe operations”.

The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has strict criteria for commercial drone use and some American politicians have called for the setting up of a drone register.

The FAA estimates that by 2020 there will be around 30,000 commercial drones and many more civilian devices in use in America.

Great Reasons To Take Your Business To Foreign Countries

0

Before we begin this article, let’s get one thing out in the open: going global isn’t easy. You’ll need to go through a lot of planning and research to plot your moves. And, you will need an in-depth knowledge of the market you intend to enter.

That said, there have never been more opportunities to take your business elsewhere. And, of course, it’s simple to get started, thanks to the Internet. These days, you can begin to sell in another country with relative ease, and it’s an excellent way to test the different water. Here are some of the advantages – take a look and let us know what you think.

Diversify your market

All businesses tend to do better when they can expand their offering, and going abroad is the perfect opportunity. For example, let’s say that you sell a product here, and think it might be a success in Australia. So, you take your product out there and start to get some sale. But, you notice something. People that buy your product in the UK tend to buy an accompanying product with it, too. But that product isn’t on sale in Australia. So, not only have you had success with your product, but you have also spotted a gap in the market – and given yourself the chance to diversify.

Maximize product lifespans

All goods and services have limited lifespans. There are only a certain amount of people that can buy something from the same area, after all. So, heading abroad gives you a whole bunch of fresh faces, that can help your product expand its lifespan. There is a lot of research to do first, of course. But, if you want to make the most of what you sell, it is silly to limit yourself to your geographical location.

Better profits

In some cases, selling a product abroad might be more profitable for you than selling at home. There are a few reasons why. First of all, you can add on extra charges for taxes and delivery – although you shouldn’t push too far. Most importantly, you can look for the best currency rates to give you the best return when you receive the funds. While it won’t happen all the time, or for every currency, the strength of the pound could be beneficial for you. Check in with an international exchange broker to make sure you get the best deals.

Less risk

If you only sell in one country, many different things can happen that can put you at risk. A better product than yours could come to the market, for example. Or, there could be a crash in the stock value of your industry, meaning people put less faith in your company. Neither of these things is your fault, but you do need to protect yourself against them. So, it makes complete sense to spread your risk in the same way that successful investors do. Selling in more than one country will protect your company if things go wrong in one particular area of the world.

Still think your business is restricted to the UK? We hope we have shown you an alternative route to success!

Brussels Security Delays St. Nicholas Events

Brussels security has delayed Saint Nicholas’ traditional Christmas welcome by school kids.

St. Nicholas is the traditional bearer of Christmas gifts in much of continental Europe.

Heightened security has delayed St. Nicholas’ arrival in the Belgian capital from November 30 to December 4, Visit Brussels says.

Saint Nicholas, similar to Santa Claus, had been due to land by steamboat at Peniches Quay on Monday morning, November 30.

He will distribute sweets and hot chocolate in a decorated marquee.Saint Nicholas Brussels

St. Nicholas will be “welcomed in style by a crowd of impatient children” along with Rudi Vervoort, Premier of the Brussels region, Visit Brussels reports.

All schools in the Brussels area had been invited to take part, but the event was canceled last week as the terror threat level was still at four – the highest – following the Paris attacks on November 13.

The threat level, which curtailed a range of activities in Brussels including school outings, has since been downgraded to three.

Visit Brussels, the organizers, gave details of December 4 welcoming ceremony.

“From early morning all the children can participate in a feast, full of animation, music and hot drinks.”

Previous years have included face-painting contests with a prize presented by Saint Nicholas.

Traditionally St. Nicholas leaves presents for children on December 6 in return for a glass of milk.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Continues to Top US Box Office

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 has held onto the top spot at the North American box office, despite competition from Pixar’s new release, The Good Dinosaur.

The final movie in the Hunger Games series took $51.6 million on its second weekend in North American cinemas.

The Good Dinosaur took only $39.2 million after five days from its release.

Creed, a continuation of the Sylvester Stallone Rocky series, opened in third place with a $30.1 million haul.

Both The Good Dinosaur and Creed opened in cinemas on November 25 to take advantage of Thanksgiving holiday.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, the final outing for Jennifer Lawrence’s futuristic tyranny-battling Katniss Everdeen character, has now made more than $440 million worldwide.Good Dinosaur US box office

However, its 10-day takings in North America – which currently stand at just short of $200 million – are $25 million down on what its immediate predecessor had grossed at the same point in its release one year ago, according to the Box Office Mojo site.

The Good Dinosaur, Pixar’s second release of 2015, tells of a friendship between an Apatosaurus and an infant caveman in an alternate reality in which dinosaurs have not become extinct.

The movie, which had a troubled production history, had the third lowest North American opening in the company’s history, with only A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2 faring less well with what were far more limited debuts in comparison.

Creed, in which Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa character becomes the trainer to the son of his former adversary Apollo Creed, attracted an audience primarily made up of males aged 25 and over.

SPECTRE, the latest entry in the James Bond series, is ranked fourth in this week’s chart, with The Peanuts Movie charting in fifth place.

North American box office Top 5:

  1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 – $51.6 million
  2. The Good Dinosaur – $39.2 million
  3. Creed – $30.1 million
  4. Spectre – $12.8 million
  5. The Peanuts Movie – $9.7 million
