Two US Diplomats Expelled from Moscow Amid Row

Two US diplomats have been expelled from Moscow, after the White House said it had ordered two Russian embassy staff to leave Washington.

On July 8, the US State Department said their move came after a Russian policeman attacked a US diplomat near the US embassy in Moscow.

That US diplomat has now been expelled from Moscow, along with one other embassy worker.

The Kremlin accused the men of being CIA agents.

Russian deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said both US embassy staff were expelled for “activities incompatible with their diplomatic status”.

State department spokesman John Kirby said the two Russian officials, who have not been named, were told to leave on June 17.

John Kirby said that earlier that month, a Russian policeman attacked a US diplomat near the US embassy in Moscow.

“The action was unprovoked and it endangered the safety of our employee,” he said.

“The Russian claim that the policeman was protecting the embassy from an unidentified individual is simply untrue.”

Russia said earlier this week that the US official was a CIA agent who had refused to provide his identification papers and hit the policeman in the face.

In June, US officials said harassment against US diplomats by Russian security and intelligence services was on the rise.

According to the Washington Post, that included breaking into the homes of embassy staff, rearranging furniture and even killing a family pet.

Russia has denied the allegation that security staff mistreated the US diplomat. It said the diplomat worked for the CIA and had refused to show ID papers.

Russian media have also released a footage showing what they say was the scuffle between the US diplomat and the Russian policeman.

In response to seeing its two diplomats ordered to leave Washington, the Kremlin announced its move on July 9.

“After their unfriendly step two employees of the United States embassy had to leave Moscow,” Sergei Ryabkov said.

“They were declared persona non grata for activities incompatible with their diplomatic status.”

No official response has been made by Russia to the allegations of harassment of US diplomats. A statement to the Washington Post said there had been US provocation against Russian diplomats.

Wimbledon 2016: Serena Williams Wins Her 22nd Grand Slam Title

Serena Williams beat Angelique Kerber to win a seventh Wimbledon and 22nd Grand Slam title.

The world No 1 coped with a gusty wind on Centre Court to win 7-5 6-3 and equal Steffi Graf’s Open era record of major titles.

Angelique Kerber, 28, had beaten Serena Williams in the Australian Open final in January but could not produce another shock.

Serena Williams ends a losing run at Slams stretching back to Wimbledon in 2015.

Fourteen years since she first won Wimbledon, Serena Williams claimed the title for a seventh time after dropping just one set all tournament.

Serena Williams moves alongside German great Steffi Graf in the all-time list of Grand Slam singles champions, and just two behind overall leader Margaret Court, the Australian who won 13 of her 24 major titles before tennis turned professional in 1968.

Angelique Kerber was the outsider but buoyed by her win over Serena Williams in Melbourne, and the swirling wind added another element of uncertainty to the final.

Riri Williams: New Iron Man Is A 15-Year-Old Black Girl

Riri Williams, a 15-year-old black girl, will be donning the famous armor of Iron Man in an upcoming episode of the series, Marvel has revealed.

Civil War II sees Tony Stark hang up his boots to be replaced by Riri Williams, the comic book maker says.

Riri is a Chicago-born science genius studying at MIT and made her debut earlier this year.

The news has prompted a huge reaction online, with many welcoming it as a step forward for diversity.

Iron Man writer Brian Michael Bendis told Time he came up with Riri Williams’ character after being struck by the “chaos and violence” of Chicago while working in the city.

“And this story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life, just random street violence, and went off to college was very inspiring to me.

“I thought that was the most modern version of a superhero or superheroine story I had ever heard.”

The Iron Man character first appeared in 1963. The series focuses on billionaire weapons inventor Tony Stark.

Philando Castile: Another Black Man Killed by Police in Minnesota

Philando Castile, a black man from Minnesota, has been shot dead by police as protests continued over the police killing of another black man in Louisiana.

His girlfriend live-streamed the aftermath of the latest incident, showing Philando Castile covered in blood as an officer pointed his gun at him.

Philando Castile, 32, was shot as he reached for his driving license, she said.

His death follows the death of Alton Sterling from Louisiana, who was shot dead by police during an incident in Baton Rouge on July 5.

Hundreds of people have protested for two nights over Alton Sterling’s killing.

The deaths follow a long line of high-profile incidents involving African-Americans at the hands of the police, igniting a national debate about the lethal use of force.Philando Castile killed in Minnesota

Philando Castile had been stopped in Falcon Heights, a suburb of St Paul, because the car had a broken rear light, the woman, identified in local media reports as Lavish Reynolds, said.

Before he was shot, Philando Castile told the officer that he was licensed to carry a concealed gun and had one in his possession, she said.

“You shot four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his license and registration, sir,” Lavish Reynolds says in the video.

A child, Lavish Reynolds’s daughter, was also in the car at the time.

Police said an investigation was under way and the officer involved had been put on leave.

Philando Castile worked as a cafeteria supervisor at a Montessori school. His cousin Antonio Johnson told the Star Tribune newspaper he was “immediately criminally profiled” because he was black.

About 200 people have been protesting outside State Governor Mark Dayton’s mansion in St Paul.

In Baton Rouge, hundreds of people gathered for a second night of protests at the shop where Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old father of five, was killed on July 5.

Some demonstrators chanted “Black lives matter” and called for justice.

Video emerged on July 6 appearing to show Alton Sterling being held down and then shot several times, although some shots are heard when the camera moves away from the confrontation.

Seconds later, one of the officers is seen removing an object from Philando Castile’s trousers as he lies on the ground with blood on his chest.

The officers involved, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II, have been put on administrative leave and the DoJ has launched a civil rights investigation.

Why two of the most expensive cities in the world still attract investors around the globe

0

Often hailed the “Capital of the 21st Century”, London is shaping up to be one of the hottest cities in the world. However, the allure of New York never goes out of style, with The Big Apple still being one of the most popular cities to call home.

While it may seem difficult to compare such vibrant cities on either side of the Atlantic, it turns out they both have quite a lot in common, and this is especially true when examining the most affluent markets. Taking a look at areas such as Mayfair, one of London’s oldest neighborhoods, alongside the stylish Upper East Side, it can be seen that both have plenty to offer those who enjoy the finer things in life…

NYC-Skyline

Population

There are 5,100 permanent residents in Mayfair, while the Upper East Side is home to 206,908 residents. Geographically of course, the Upper East Side spans far more space, covering 4.56 km².

Cost of buying

In Mayfair, property priced at £1 million or less is rapidly disappearing, and similarly on the Upper East Side, real estate here is expensive and highly sought-after. The Global Property Guide lists London has being the second most expensive city when it comes to renting and buying property; in January 2014, it was reported that the average price per sq. ft. in Mayfair was £2,320, a figure substantially higher than that of the Upper East Side, which was just £796.

Cost of renting

For those who can’t afford to get on the property ladder, opting to rent in either market will still prove expensive. TransferWise reveals the average monthly rent for a 120 sq. m. flat in London to be $6,856, while for the same size apartment in New York, it is marginally cheaper at $6,553.

Transport - London

Transportation links

There are five airports within reach in London, compared with three in New York. However, when it comes to local public transport, NYC’s subway system comes out ahead of the tube. With 1.65 billion users compared with 1.2 billion on the tube, the subway has 249 miles of track and runs 24 hours a day. It goes farther, runs for longer and more people use it, and yet the subway is still less expensive than the tube. Users can pay $2.75 for a single subway fare, compared with $7.30 for a single ride on the London Underground.

Culture and Entertainment

Both London and New York are cultural meccas, home to film festivals, theatre districts (The West End and Broadway respectively), museums, art galleries, events and a great deal more each year. As far as culture and entertainment goes, both NYC and London are fairly evenly stacked.

Dining out and local cuisine

London’s food scene has certainly stepped up to be a contender in recent years, but this is still one area in which New York truly excels. There are a staggering 126 Michelin star restaurants in NYC, not to mention a huge variety of cheap street eats, authentic multicultural cuisine, and fast food options for those on the go. Of the world’s top 100 restaurants, nine are found in NYC, compared to just five in London.

cost-of-living-new-york-city

Cost of living

London has topped a list of the most expensive cities in the world to live and work; it was revealed that the cost of living and work accommodation per person in London was £80,777 ($112,800), while in NYC, the same costs totaled £79,680 ($111,300).

Crime rates

According to Numbeo, the cities are relatively similar when comparing crime rates. New York experiences a “moderate” level of crime (51.29), with London having the same level and a slightly higher ranking at 56.09.

Quality of life

The Mercer Quality of Life survey compares 221 cities, looking at metrics such as relationships with other countries, crime and corruption rates, health and public services, and political stability. Based on this, the report ranked London at no. 38, while New York wasn’t far behind at no. 47.

What Is It That Makes Your Company Appeal To Customers?

0

Having a product or a service that is in demand is the bare essentials of what you need to make a successful business. However, it’s not all you need. Many business owners can be surprised to find that their business isn’t doing as well as hoped even with all that market research in their favor. In a lot of these cases, all that’s needed is finding what really appeals to the customers. In this article, we’re going to focus on those aspects and how you can use them.

black-and-white, city, man

Pic

Know your audience

The first major step into creating an approach that’s customer focused is understanding who your customers are. Knowing your audience in detail. Without doing adequate research on who you’re trying to reach, the idea of a customer is a vague thing that you can’t prepare for. A lot of this can be done using the data from the customers you already have. From looking beyond just what they purchase. Look at the demographics they fit, their channel-preference, their household composition. Find out more about the everyday lives of the people that you want to appeal to. When you better understand their lifestyles, you will better understand what you can offer to make the lifestyle just a bit better.

Know your niche

Similarly, you need to know exactly what it is you offer. Not just your products and services and the gap in the market they inhabit. You need to define your niche down to the most unique elements of your company. Particularly in relation to your competition. The points below offer a more in-depth look at what unique advantages you could have to offer. Keep them in mind and compare them to what’s unique about your company compared to the competition. Make a unique selling point of them to give yourself a competitive edge. People often need to be convinced why your business is the correct choice over your competitors. You need to have the right answer to offer them. Otherwise, they’re more likely to go with the option they already know.

Quality branding

Regardless of what aspects you find work in favor of your company, you need customers to know them. You need to form them into part of the company narrative, the story that people receive to understand what you offer them. A quality, consistent brand identity is how you communicate that story. It shapes what you say about your services and how you say them. It unifies itself with a visual design scheme that echoes through your site, your logo and everything else your company produces. It’s how people will recognize your company and what it is you have to offer them. If you want people to see value in your business, the brand is how you communicate that.

Customer service

However, your branding isn’t something that stands on its own. Your business has to have the values that appeal to customers to support that brand. To inform it and inform your customers. One of the values that every company should (but doesn’t) adopt is a comprehensive approach to customer service. A devotion to making sure the user experience of your company, whether in person, on the phone or online, is as positive for them as possible. A lot of businesses focus so much on trying to get customers, that they neglect the ones they already keep. A business with a focus on customer services ensures that they are always on call to answer when needed. As well as to make sure that the customer’s experience was satisfactory after the purchase.

Keeping your customers

As we hinted, the service that you provide after the customer has paid and received what they paid for should be part of your business. If you’re racing to always appeal to new customers, you’re missing the ones you already appeal to. Redefine your services to include how you keep the customers on your side. Some companies will do this by forwarding them exclusive deals. Others will do it by offering an easy to use loyalty system to those who plan on returning. As well as offering great services, you can also do this by using the power of numbers. In particular, the numbers of people who use and return to your services.

Community

Indeed, numbers can be very convincing if they’re used the right way. But you need to be offering the right numbers up. For example, using positive social proof instead of negative. Don’t focus on the people who haven’t converted to your side yet. Give them the numbers of those who have. But maintain that number as more than just a statistic. People like to be a part of something, so build that something up as a community centered around your business. The businesses with the best community get social with it, nowadays. The internet has made that easier than ever. Don’t just use channels of communication to send messages their way. Get involved in the conversation and get talking. Ask questions to get them talking, too.

Businessmen, Honest, Honesty, Sincere, Sincerity

Pic

Honesty

If you want people to get ‘on side’ with your business, you need to really be on their side. This includes making it a policy to be one-hundred percent honest with the public. Nowadays, the message of marketers is often disregarded as just that. People know when they’re being sold to. If your strategies are honest and you refrain from misleading messaging, you will get a better result. Even better, you can use the honesty of those who are already your customers. Word-of-mouth and testimonials can go alot further as far as credibility in the customer’s eyes are concerned. If you have satisfied customers, capitalize on them. A lot of them will be glad to share their experiences with you.

Sustainability

It’s not just product satisfaction and a community that people care about, however. If you want your product to be something that people really support, then having a cause behind it is just one of the ways you can do that. One of the fastest rising examples of a good cause is by making your business and your products more environmentally sustainable. For example, look at this story of Hampton Creek in the LA Times. A company that started to make egg free mayonnaise that was less carbon reliant than the average. After initial difficulties, soon their competitors began to follow in their footsteps. This narrative has gone the same way for industries making the switch to more sustainable methods all over. People vote with their wallets and are consistently voting for companies with real ethics.

Social responsibility

This goes for more than just those whose values are environmentally based, as well. The Fairtrade movement has proven that people care just as much for the fairness towards societies at large. Enough to often pay more than they would for products that don’t have the Fairtrade logo on their products. Social responsibility not only offers your customers another reason to support you, either. It also makes for a company culture that can make your workplace and your employees some of the best to work in. Even if it’s only in the small scale by getting involved with local communities and charities. People are a lot more likely to trust and buy from companies that show some responsibility.

Pic

The aesthetic

Now for another point that’s more about appealing directly to the customer. We’re going to talk about the aesthetic of your business. Not just the branding or the design on the products that you’re offering. But the premises, as well. In retail and the food service industries, curb appeal and design is a huge part of making a satisfactory customer experience. But this goes for those businesses set in offices, as well. You want people to see that your company is professional and well organized. A strong aesthetic can be a part of communicating that. Regardless of what kind of business you have, interior design can help build prestige in the eyes of customers and staff alike.

Quality

What needs to support every single point above, however, is the quality of what it is you offer. If you’re not doing the best to improve your product and your business at every step, the customer will know. As they say, the proof is in the pudding. So never stop reiterating on what you’re doing, even if it is a success. Always pursue improvement and innovation in your business. Show when you’ve done quality work by demonstrating it and taking it to trade shows or other venues. Sell your product by selling the quality that goes into it. Without having the proof that your product is worth buying, none of the other appealing steps above will do you much good.

The customer-driven approach to business is the only one that works in the long-run. Without understanding them and what they want from you, you are effectively blinding yourself. We hope the points above help you better the approach that works for your business.

5 Things to Consider Before Opening a Business in the US

Most international business owners would love the opportunity to expand their business into new markets, such as the United States. After all, the US brings new people with new needs who would make a great market for your business. However, just because you want to start a business in the US doesn’t mean that it’s easy. It’s actually a lengthy and detailed process, and you want to be sure that you consider everything before making your final decision.

1. Market

Before you consider starting your business in the United States, you want to be sure there is a target market for your products or services. Do some research in that area to determine if it’s the right place. The United States is very large, and what may work for people in New York may not work for those in Arizona, so you want to be sure you are choosing the right location for your business.

Do this with a small test run. For instance, if you’re selling a product, you can see if a third-party in the area would be willing to sell it for you and see how it does. If you have a service, consider testing it out in a small area. The more research you can do to see if this is something that people would like in that area, the better chance you have for success. After all, if you spend the money to move to this new place and your business doesn’t take off, it wasn’t a very good investment.

2. Laws

Immigration laws vary from location to location, and chances are you may want to take some of your existing employees to the new business location. In order to do this, you want to be fully aware of any immigration laws that need to be followed. According to Hirson Immigration, “For those who are interested in obtaining lawful permanent residence in the US by investing into a US business, acquiring the services of an experienced EB-5 attorney is of the utmost value and importance.” By doing this, you’ll be able to receive the information you need to legally keep your employees safe during the transition.

3. Logistics

There are plenty of benefits to opening a business in the United States, but you need to carefully consider the logistics. If you will still need to travel regularly to the new location, then you’ll want to consider the cost of the logistics. You also want to make sure that the location you choose is close to clients or consumers who want your products or services. After all, if you opt for a location that isn’t logistically accessible or effective, it could actually harm your business more than help. As mentioned above, be sure to do your research, because your product may be better off in one state versus another.

4. Cost

Obviously, money is very important, so you want to be sure you’re making the right decision when it comes to overall business cost. Make sure you understand exactly what it will cost you to open a business in the United States. Don’t just consider the cost of the building, employees, etc., but also the cost of permits, visas, and other items that are required for you to legally open shop. Once you have a firm number, you can use this to determine if opening this business is actually worth it.

5. Benefits

Sometimes the perks outweigh the risks. There are plenty of advantages to opening a business in the US, but it should still be something you truly think about before diving in. Be sure to ask yourself some important questions. Do you receive tax breaks? Is there a better market? Do you have more growth opportunity? There are many things to consider, but besides just focusing on the legality and cost, you should also allow the benefits to play an important role in your overall decision.

Making the decision to open a business in the US an important step for any global company, so you want to be sure that you do it correctly and successfully. Use these tips to make sure you consider everything necessary before making a drastic change for your company.

Legal Mistakes Fewer Of Us Should Be Making

0

Getting involved with the law in any kind of context is an occasion for considerable concern. Money, our reputations and records and even our freedom can be at risk. That said, there still isn’t a lot of common understanding in how to best avoid serious trouble when you’re in those situations. You can never truly predict what will happen, but here are a few tips you should always keep in mind. We’re going to look at some common legal risks and precautions you should take.

Our taxes

It doesn’t often result in jail time. However, the penalties we can receive for doing our taxes wrong, even accidentally, are considerable. At most risk when it comes to their taxes tend to be those in charge of small businesses. There are many who, for instance, file for the wrong kind of organizational structure. This entity type has an impact of its own on audit risk. Other risks include the amount of gross income and deductions included in a return. You can’t always protect yourself from an audit, so you need to make sure that everything you report is accurate and legal. There are tax lawyers who can help small businesses do just that with an expert opinion to help.

Know your rights

We all have rights that protect us when we come into trouble with the law. This includes the right to legal representation, which you should always exercise if you’re under arrest. However, you also have rights when it comes to your arrest. Those rights include the right to self-defense in cases of false arrest. As resisting arrest can prove a danger to your own health, however, it’s not recommended you take that course of action. Rather, learn what the parameters of a false arrest are. Your best chance to take justice for that false arrest is being able to prove it in a court of law. Otherwise, you are only putting yourself in a position where the police’s advantage over you can have fatal results.

Your right to silence

A notion that has always been in the public consciousness is starting to gain some traction as a way of dealing with police questioning and stops. We’re talking about the right to remain silent. However, a significant misunderstanding of how to apply that right is causing a lot of people more trouble than good. For instance, there are some out there who advise that you simply say nothing to the police. Naturally, this is only likely to arouse suspicion more than anything. The right to silence is to protect people from the danger of incriminating themselves under pressure. This is a right that protects you when in custody, not outside of it. If you are arrested, that’s when you invoke your right and request your attorney.

Dealing with police

Instead of following the misguided advice to physically resist or stay silent, the right way to deal with police is carefully. Remember the advantage that they have over you in most encounters and stay calm. When talking to them, be polite and be respectful. Keep your hands visible and keep eye contact. It can help you to be recording, and make it known that you’re recording, any communication. Ask why you have been stopped and whether anything they ask you to do is a request or an order. Make sure you ask and understand whether you are being detained or are free to go. If you’re not being detained, then ask to leave often.

Having the right advice on your side

If you are under arrest, then you need to start preparing for a legal defense. Any evidence you might have collected from the steps above can help you start to prepare that defense. But the most important aspect of those preparations are going to be who you have representing you. If you are able, it is recommended that you go for a private attorney over a public defender in every case. The best criminal defense lawyers have nowhere near the workload as public defenders. They are also able to give their cases the right attention and time that they demand. Finding the best defense lawyers you can means doing your research and looking at their past records.

Not understanding the game plan

When it comes to the court, your logical following of the events isn’t going to always be the same as how the case is presented. Your lawyer will likely come up with a strategy, so take heed to understand what kind of plans they may come up with. Common legal defense strategies include using the evidence you have collected beforehand. Particularly to prove a wrongful arrest, for example. Other ways they may be able to help is by demonstrating bias on the part of witnesses involved in the case. The truth is a vital component of a legal strategy, but not always the only thing that matters. Following your lawyers lead in using that truth to create the case is your best option.

Giving the wrong image in court

In a truly just system, the image and behavior of the defendant should have no impact on the judge or the jury, whichever is involved in your judgement. However, this is the real world. People will make shallow judgements based on the image that you give off. That’s why you need to put an effort into it. Not just in terms of being well dressed and well groomed. But how you talk, react and even sit. You need to, again, be aware of the authority that you’re under in these situations. You need to be respectful and direct. Don’t be flippant, don’t be rude. With specifics, your lawyer will again give you a lot of advice, so take heed of it.

The balance of power always lies in the hands of the state, but it is entirely possible for you to wrestle it back. Just make sure you keep the above tips in mind but follow the advice of a skilled attorney above all else.

Ankle boots are timeless, and they are durable too. So invest in a quality pair and they will last you a long time.

Juno: NASA Mission Enters Jupiter’s Orbit

NASA’s Juno probe has successfully arrived in Jupiter’s orbit.

The satellite, which left Earth five years ago, had to fire a rocket engine to slow its approach to Jupiter and get caught by its gravity.

A sequence of tones transmitted from the spacecraft confirmed the braking maneuver had gone as planned.

Receipt of the radio messages prompted wild cheering at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“All stations on Juno co-ord, we have the tone for burn cut-off on Delta B,” Juno Mission Control had announced.

“Roger Juno, welcome to Jupiter.”

NASA scientists plan to use Juno to sense Jupiter’s deep interior. They think the structure and the chemistry of the planet’s insides hold clues to how this giant world formed some four-and-a-half-billion years ago.

Engineers had warned in advance that the engine firing was fraught with danger.

No previous spacecraft has dared pass so close to Jupiter; its intense radiation belts can destroy unprotected electronics.

Photo NASA
Photo NASA

One calculation even suggested the orbit insertion would have subjected Juno to a dose equivalent to a million dental X-rays.

Jumo is built like a tank with titanium shielding, and the 35-minute rocket burn appeared to go off without a hitch.

While the radiation dangers have not gone away, the probe should now be able to prepare its instruments to start sensing what lies beneath Jupiter’s opaque clouds.

July 5 orbit insertion has put Juno in a large ellipse around the planet that takes just over 53 days to complete.

A second burn of the rocket engine in mid-October will tighten this orbit to just 14 days. It is then that the science can really start.

This will involve repeat passes just a few thousand of miles above the cloudtops.

At each close approach, Juno will use its eight remote sensing instruments – plus its camera – to peer down through the gas planet’s many layers, to measure their composition, temperature, motion and other properties.

A priority will be to determine the abundance of oxygen at Jupiter. This will be bound up in its water.

The probe will also try to settle old arguments over whether the planet hosts a solid core or whether its gases go all the way down to the centre in an ever more compressed state.

It will look for the deep swirling sea of liquid metallic hydrogen that theory suggests is the driver behind Jupiter’s immense magnetic field and its spectacular auroras.

NASA plans to run Juno through to February 2018, assuming any radiation damage has not made it inoperable by then. The performance of the camera is expected to degrade rapidly within a few months.

In line with the practice on many previous planetary missions, Juno will be commanded to end its days by ditching into the atmosphere of Jupiter.

This ensures there is no possibility of Juno crashing into and contaminating the gas giant’s large moons, at least one of which, Europa, is considered to have the potential to host microbial life.

Medina Attacks: Four Guards Killed Near Prophet’s Mosque

Three suicide attacks hit Saudi Arabia on July 4, including one near Islam’s second holiest site.

Four guards were killed near the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, while only the bombers died in Jeddah and Qatif.

No group has yet said it was behind the attacks, but suspicion has fallen on ISIS.

The Sunni Muslim jihadist group has called for the overthrow of the Saudi monarchy and its supporters have previously carried out bombings in the Gulf state, targeting the Shia minority community and security forces.

ISIS has also claimed a series of deadly attacks in the predominantly Muslim countries of Turkey, Bangladesh and Iraq during the holy month of Ramadan.

In July 4 first bombing, two security officers were wounded when a man detonated an explosive vest he was wearing near the US consulate in the coastal city of Jeddah shortly after midnight.

An interior ministry spokesman identified the assailant as a 35-year-old Pakistani expat called Abdullah Qalzar Khan, who it said had worked as a private driver in Jeddah for 12 years.

The second attack took place near dusk outside a Shia mosque in the mainly Shia eastern city of Qatif.

A resident told the Reuters news agency that there were believed to be no casualties apart from the bomber, as worshippers had already left to break their daylight Ramadan fasts.

However, the interior ministry spokesman said the remains of three people had been found and were being identified, without providing any details.Medina suicide attacks July 2016

Not long afterwards, another bomber struck near the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, where thousands of worshippers had gathered for the Maghrib prayers.

On July 5, the Senior Council of Ulema issued a statement saying those behind the three attacks, whom it described as “renegades”, “have no respect for any sanctity and they have no religion or conscience”.

The head of the Shura Council, Saudi Arabia’s main advisory body, said the attack was “unprecedented”.

The Grand Sheikh of Cairo’s al-Azhar University, the leading religious institute in the Sunni Muslim world, also stressed “the sanctity of the houses of God, especially the Prophet’s Mosque”.

The foreign minister of Shia power Iran, Saudi Arabia’s main regional rival, tweeted: “There are no more red lines left for terrorists to cross. Sunnis, Shiites will both remain victims unless we stand united as one. #Medina.”

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Interior Minister, Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, meanwhile sought to reassure his fellow citizens, saying: “The security of the homeland is good, it is at its highest levels and thanks be to God it gets stronger every day.”

According to the official Saudi Press Agency, the prince made the statement while visiting the security officers wounded in the Jeddah bombing.

UAE Citizens Urged Not To Wear Traditional Dress Abroad

Emirati citizens are being urged not to wear national dress outside the United Arab Emirates (UAE) region, days after businessman Ahmed al-Menhali was detained in the US.

Ahmed al-Menhali was detained while wearing traditional robes in a hotel in Avon, Ohio.

According to local media, a hotel employee feared he was pledging allegiance to ISIS.

The UAE’s ministry of interior issued advice on July 2 urging citizens to be careful about what they wear abroad.

UAE nationals should avoid wearing traditional costume “to preserve their safety”, the ministry said without referencing the Ohio incident.

Ohio broadcaster WEWS reported that police received a call from the sister of a hotel clerk who had said there was a man “in full headdress with multiple disposable phones pledging his allegiance to ISIS”.UAE national dress

Police later received a call from the employee’s father alleging the same thing.

A video of Ahmed al-Menhali’s arrest, filmed by police, was published by WEWS on July 1.

The footage shows armed police approaching him outside a hotel and forcing him to lie on the floor, before searching him.

Ahmed al-Menhali, who is wearing white robes, the ghutra headdress and the agal – cords to hold the headdress in place – is heard repeatedly asking why police had stopped him.

“They were brutal with me,” he told the UAE newspaper The National.

“They pressed forcefully on my back. I had several injuries and bled from the forceful nature of their arrest.”

Avon’s mayor and police chief have since apologized to Ahmed al-Menhali, who was recovering in Ohio after treatment following a stroke.

After meeting him, Muslim community leaders invited the officials to break fast with them as part of the holy month of Ramadan.

The UAE ministry of interior warning was distributed on July 2. A day later, the ministry also issued travel advice to Emirati citizens, urging them to respect bans of the full-face veil where they are in place.

The note also urges people “to take caution while abroad due to the security developments in some European countries, triggered by the unfolding unrest in the Middle East region, and their fallout, especially the refugee crisis”.

ISIS Bomb Attacks Kill At Least 75 People in Baghdad

ISIS militants have killed at least 75 people in two bomb attacks carried out in Baghdad, Iraqi officials say.

Some other 100 people have been injured in the attacks.

In the first attack on July 2, a suicide car bomb exploded near a restaurant and shopping area in the central district of Karrada.

The street was busy with shoppers after sundown in the holy month of Ramadan.

A second bomb exploded later in a predominantly Shia area north of the capital.

The bombings come a week after Iraqi security forces recaptured the city of Falluja from Islamic State militants.

Authorities say the city was used as a launching pad for attacks on Baghdad by ISIS.

On July 2, ISIS claimed responsibility for the suicide car bomb in Karrada, which caused a huge street fire on the main street, in a statement distributed online by supporters of the hardline Sunni group.

The car bomb went off as people were eating out late during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends next week.

ISIS still controls large swathes of territory in the country’s north and west, including Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city.

However, ISIS has been under pressure in Iraq and in neighboring Syria, where it has been targeted by government forces and US-backed rebels.

Elie Wiesel Dies in New York Aged 87

Auschwitz survivor and Nobel peace laureate Elie Wiesel has died in New York at the age of 87.

Elie Wiesel lived in Manhattan and had been a US citizen since the 1960s.

He became famous after writing about his experiences as a teenager in Nazi concentration camps, where he lost his mother, father and younger sister.

Elie Wiesel dedicated his life to ensuring the atrocities committed under the Nazis were never forgotten, and the president of the World Jewish Congress has called him “a beacon of light”.

Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust remembrance centre announced his death on July 2.

President Barack Obama said Elie Wiesel was “one of the great moral voices of our time”.

Elie Wiesel was born in Sighet, Romania, in 1928. In 1940, Sighet was part of a region that was annexed by Hungary. Four years later the town’s entire Jewish population, including 15-year-old Elie Wiesel and his family, was deported to Auschwitz.

Elie Wiesel’s mother and one sister were killed in Nazi death chambers. His father died of starvation and dysentery in the Buchenwald camp. Two other sisters survived.

After the war, Elie Wiesel lived in a French orphanage and went on to become a journalist.

He wrote more than 60 books, starting with Night, a memoir based on his experiences in the death camps.

Night included the lines: “For the survivor who chooses to testify, it is clear: his duty is to bear witness for the dead and for the living.

“To forget would be not only dangerous but offensive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.”

Elie Wiesel’s use of the term Holocaust helped cement the word’s association with Nazi atrocities against the Jews.

In 1986, Elie Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace prize for his role in speaking out against violence, repression and racism.

After Elie Wiesel’s death, the head of the World Jewish Congress said he was “undoubtedly one of the great Jewish teachers and thinkers of the past 100 years”.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said Elie Wiesel “served as a ray of light and an example of humanity that believes in the goodness of man”.

Elie Wiesel leaves a wife, Marion, who also survived the Holocaust, as well as a son, Elisha.

Hillary Clinton Questioned by FBI over Use of Emails

Hillary Clinton has been questioned by the FBI over her use of emails while she was secretary of state, her campaign says.

A spokesperson for the Democratic presidential candidate said it was a voluntary interview.

The FBI is investigating Hillary Clinton and her aides over whether they mishandled classified information on a private email server she used while serving as secretary of state.Hillary Clinton South Carolina victory

Hillary Clinton denies handling classified information in her private emails.

The former secretary of state said she set up the email address for reasons of convenience.

However, a state department inquiry accused Hillary Clinton and other former US secretaries of state of poorly managing email security.

The Justice Department is now seeking to establish whether this constitutes a criminal offence.

On July 1, the US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said she would accept the findings of the FBI and prosecutors, when deciding whether to charge Hillary Clinton.

On June 30, it was revealed that Loretta Lynch had met former President Bill Clinton in what she described as a “social” meeting but which she admitted would “cast a shadow” over the way her role in the case would be perceived.

Bangladesh Holey Artisan Bakery Hostage Crisis Ends After 12 Hours

At least 20 people have been freed after Bangladeshi troops cleared Holey Artisan Bakery cafe in the capital Dhaka where suspected Islamist gunmen took hostages, including foreigners.

Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina said 13 hostages were freed and six attackers shot dead. One of the gunmen was arrested, she said.

Some of those who were held at the cafe were believed to be Italian and Japanese.

ISIS has said it carried out the attack.

The 12-hour siege began as diners were gathering to break their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In a TV statement, PM Sheikh Hasina said: “It was an extremely heinous act.

“What kind of Muslims are these people? They don’t have any religion.

“My government is determined to root out terrorism and militancy from Bangladesh.”

Japan’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Koichi Hagiuda said one Japanese citizen was shot and wounded in the attack, and that seven others were in the cafe. Japan’s government has not yet been able to contact them, he said.

Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper said the gunmen tortured anyone who was unable to recite the Koran. They provided meals overnight for only the Bangladeshi captives, the Daily Star said.

Sumon Reza, a supervisor at the cafe, was in the restaurant when the attack began but managed to flee to the roof.

“The whole building was shaking when they set off explosives,” he told media in Bangladesh. He later jumped off the roof and escaped.

Explosions and heavy gunfire were heard earlier, as the army and navy commandos stormed the cafe.

Armored vehicles were also seen moving in the Gulshan neighborhood.

The gunfire stopped after about an hour.

The identity of the rescued hostages and the fate of other captives believed to have been in the cafe were not immediately known.

At least two police officers were killed in exchanges of fire on July 1, and 30 police officers were injured.

The attack began when eight or nine armed men burst into the cafe in the diplomatic area of Dhaka at about 21:20 on July 1 and opened fire.

A statement on the ISIS’ self-styled Amaq news agency said militants had attacked a restaurant “frequented by foreigners”. It said that more than 20 people “of different nationalities” had been killed but this has not been confirmed.

Seven Italian nationals are believed to have been in the cafe, the Italian ambassador in Dhaka, Mario Palma, was quoted as saying by Italian media.

Lt. Col. Tuhin Mohammad Masud, commander of the Rapid Action Battalion, told Associated Press the gunmen did not respond when asked to negotiate. It is unclear if they made any demands.

The attack comes after a spate of murders of secular bloggers, gay activists, academics and members of religious minorities, blamed on Islamist militants.

Holey Artisan Bakery is described as being popular with expats, diplomats and middle-class families.

Media reports quoted witnesses as saying that “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”, was heard as the militants entered the cafe.

Australia Elections 2016: Coalition Government Expected to Win

Australia is holding federal elections, where the conservative coalition government is widely expected to win.

PM Malcolm Turnball and opposition leader Bill Shorten delivered their final pitches to voters on July 1 after a marathon eight-week campaign.

The UK’s decision to leave the EU appears to have benefitted PM Malcolm Turnbull.

Labor Party leader Bill Shorten said he still intended to win.

Bill Shorten is already answering questions about his leadership in the event of a loss, with frontbencher Anthony Albanese reportedly keen to challenge.

Nearly 15.5 million people are casting their ballots across Australia, where voting is compulsory.

During the campaign, the government and Labor have sparred over the economy, healthcare, immigration and same-gender marriage.

Photo news.com.au

While the government is widely expected to retain power, it is also expected to lose many seats and tight polls indicate a high chance of a hung parliament.

As the result of Brexit referendum became clear, Malcolm Turnbull assured voters that he could deliver “economic certainty”.

The former lawyer and investment banker vowed to deliver tax cuts for workers and small businesses.

In contrast, Bill Shorten has promised to make his first priority legalizing same-gender marriage.

Disappointed with Australia’s two major political forces, many disenfranchised voters have turned to smaller parties.

An electoral flight to the independents could force the next government to walk a legislative minefield.

The Greens – who have 10 senators and one lower house lawmaker – are predicted to win more seats, particularly in inner-city areas where climate change and the treatment of refugees are major concerns.

Senator Nick Xenophon’s new pro-protectionism and anti-gambling party could control the balance of power in the event of a hung parliament.

Pauline Hanson, the founder of the far-right One Nation party, is a chance to re-enter politics on an anti-immigration platform.

A string of minor and micro parties with wildly diverse agendas are also running for both lower and upper house seats.

Bangladesh Hostage Crisis: Gunmen Storm Holey Artisan Bakery Cafe in Dhaka

A number of hostages have been taken by gunmen that stormed a popular cafe in the diplomatic area of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, officials say.

Several foreigners are among those being detained by eight or nine gunmen in Dhaka’s Gulshan district, they add.

Two police officers have been killed in a gun battle, a spokesman said, and about 30 others injured.

ISIS has already said it carried out the attack.

A statement on ISIS’ self-styled news agency Amaq said militants had attacked a restaurant “frequented by foreigners”. It said that more than 20 people “of different nationalities” had been killed but this has not been confirmed.

Security forces say they are trying to negotiate the hostages’ release.

Initial reports said that as many as 20 foreigners were among those taken captive.

Italian nationals are believed to be among them, a source at the Italian foreign ministry said, quoted by Reuters.

Benazir Ahmed, chief of the Rapid Action Battalion, Bangladesh’s elite police force said: “We want to resolve this peacefully. We are trying to talk to the attackers.

“Our first priority is to save the lives of the people trapped inside.”

Police said the gunmen burst into the Holey Artisan Bakery cafe at about 21:20 local time and opened fire.

The cafe is described as being popular with expats, diplomats and middle-class families.

Media reports quoted witnesses as saying that “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is greatest”, was heard as the attack took place.

Another local resident, Tarique Mir, said he could hear sporadic gunfire nearly three hours after the attack began.

Although high-profile gun attacks are rare in Bangladesh, the latest incident follows a series of murders widely blamed on Islamist extremists.

Austria Court Annuls Presidential Election Result

Austria’s Constitutional Court has annulled the result of the presidential election narrowly lost by Norbert Hofer, the candidate of the far-right Freedom Party.

The Freedom Party had challenged the result, saying that postal votes had been illegally and improperly handled.

Norbert Hofer lost the election to the former leader of the Greens, Alexander Van der Bellen, by just 30,863 votes or less than one percentage point.

The election will now be re-run.

Announcing the decision, Gerhard Holzinger, head of Austria’s highest court, said: “The challenge brought by Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache against the May 22 election… has been upheld.”

In two weeks of hearings, lawyers for the Freedom Party argued that postal ballots were illegally handled in 94 out of 117 districts.

The party alleged that thousands of votes were opened earlier than permitted under election rules and some were counted by people unauthorised to do so.

Photo euractiv.com
Photo euractiv.com

It also claimed to have evidence that some under-16s and foreigners had been allowed to vote.

In its ruling, the Constitutional Court said election rules had been broken in a way that could have influenced the result.

However, it said there was no proof the count had been manipulated.

If elected, Norbert Hofer will become the first far-right head of state of an EU country.

The Freedom Party has based its election campaigns around concern over immigration and falling living standards for the less well-off.

After Brexit, Norbert Hofer said he favored holding a similar referendum in Austria if the bloc failed to stop centralization and carry out reforms “within a year”.

On June 26, he told the Oesterreich newspaper: “If [the EU] evolves in the wrong direction, then in my opinion the time has come to ask the Austrians if they still want to be part of it.”

Norbert Hofer’s opponent, Alexander Van der Bellen, is strongly pro-EU and has spoken of his dream for a border-free “United States of Europe”.

Following the court’s order to re-run the vote, President Heinz Fischer will be replaced on a temporary basis by three parliamentary officials, including Norbert Hofer.

The new election is expected to be held in September or October.

Austria’s president has a mostly ceremonial role.

However, the president does have the power to dissolve the National Council – the more powerful lower house of parliament. That triggers a general election.

The president can only do that once for a particular reason – he cannot use the same grounds to dissolve it again.

It is the chancellor’s job to appoint government ministers. And the chancellor has the power to dismiss the government. But ministers have to be formally sworn in by the president.

Tesla Crash: First Death Potentially Caused by Self-Driving Technology Investigated

The first death potentially caused by self-driving technology is now being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The driver of a Tesla car died in Florida in May after colliding with a truck.

Under scrutiny is Tesla’s Autopilot feature, which automatically changes lanes and reacts to traffic.

In a statement, Tesla said it appeared the Model S car was unable to recognize “the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky” that had driven across the car’s path.

Tesla said the crash was a “tragic loss”.

The collision led to the death of Tesla driver Joshua Brown, 40. The driver of the truck, which was pulling a trailer, was unhurt.

Phot Wikipedia
Phot Wikipedia

A video on YouTube, which appears to have been posted by Joshua Brown, shows a dashboard camera recording of a previous incident, with the car steering to avoid a truck in the next lane.

He wrote: “Tesla Model S autopilot saved the car autonomously from a side collision from a boom lift truck.

“Hands down the best car I have ever owned and use it to its full extent. It has done many, many amazing things, but this was one of the more interesting things caught on the dashcam.”

On June 30, Tesla stressed that cars being controlled by Autopilot had travelled 130 million safe miles to date.

Tesla said in a statement: “The high ride height of the trailer combined with its positioning across the road and the extremely rare circumstances of the impact caused the Model S to pass under the trailer, with the bottom of the trailer impacting the windshield of the Model S.”

“Had the Model S impacted the front or rear of the trailer, even at high speed, its advanced crash safety system would likely have prevented serious injury as it has in numerous other similar incidents.”

The NHTSA will look at whether the Autopilot function performed as expected, or was at fault.

Such investigations can sometimes lead to a recall. Should that be the case, it is likely Tesla would put out an “over-the-air” update to its cars, rather than having to physically take the vehicles back.

However, the incident could be a serious blow to the reputation of autonomous technology at a time when regulators across the world are considering how to safely introduce it on public roads.

Tesla’s shares dropped by 3% after the government said it would investigate the crash.

The Autopilot function was introduced by Tesla in October 2016. In a conference call, the company’s enigmatic chief executive Elon Musk urged caution in using the technology.

“The driver cannot abdicate responsibility,” he said.

In June 30 statement, Tesla said: “It is important to note that Tesla disables Autopilot by default and requires explicit acknowledgement that the system is new technology and still in a public beta phase before it can be enabled.

“The system also makes frequent checks to ensure that the driver’s hands remain on the wheel and provides visual and audible alerts if hands-on is not detected.

“It then gradually slows down the car until hands-on is detected again.”

In its statement, the NHTSA stressed: “The opening of the Preliminary Evaluation should not be construed as a finding that the Office of Defects Investigation believes there is either a presence or absence of a defect in the subject vehicles.”

Istanbul Attackers Are All from Ex-USSR

0

Turkish sources claim that the three men who carried out the deadly attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk airport on June 28 were all from parts of the former USSR.

One is said to be from Russia’s North Caucasus region and the others from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Turkey believes ISIS was behind the suicide gun and bomb attack that left 44 people dead and some 240 injured.

Meanwhile, Turkish police detained at least 13 suspects in Istanbul and more in Izmir on June 30.

One image on Turkish media purported to show the three men together at the airport moments before the attack, wearing dark jackets and carrying hold alls. Two are wearing caps, one is smiling.Istanbul airport attackers USSR

An unnamed Turkish official confirmed for Reuters news agency the dead attackers’ countries of origin after Turkish media reports.

Some agencies named one of the men as Osman Vadinov, said to have crossed into Turkey from the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa in Syria in 2015.

Reports that Osman Vadinov was a Chechen have been denied by an unnamed police source in the North Caucasus, Russia’s Interfax news agency reports.

The organizer of the attack has been named by Turkish media as Akhmed Chatayev, a Chechen believed to have acted as an ISIS recruiter, who is on a US counter-terror sanctions list. His fate was not immediately clear.

ISIS has long recruited members from mainly Muslim parts of the former USSR, with Russian President Vladimir Putin putting the overall number at between 5,000 and 7,000 in October.

However, data published by the Soufan Group security consultants in December suggests the numbers are lower: 2,400 from Russia and 500 apiece from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Turkey’s government has made no official statement on nationalities yet and no-one has said they carried out the attack on June 28.

PM Binali Yildirim said on June 29 that “our thoughts on those responsible for the attack lean towards Islamic State”.

Istanbul Attack: Turkish Police Raids Against Suspected ISIS Militants

0

Turkey has carried out raids against suspected ISIS militants after the deadly attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk airport.

At least 13 suspects were detained in the raids in Istanbul, with more in the western coastal city of Izmir.

Turkey believes ISIS was behind June 28 suicide gun and bomb attack that left 42 people dead and more than 230 injured.

More details of the victims have emerged, many of them airport workers.

A Turkish official told AFP: “Earlier today, the police raided 16 locations to detain 13 IS suspects, including three foreign nationals.”Istanbul airport attack 2016

Turkish media said counter-terrorism police had raided several areas of Istanbul – including Pendik, Basaksehir and Sultanbeyli.

Arrests were also reported in Izmir, where at least nine people were detained, accused of financing, recruiting and providing logistical support to ISIS.

Separately, Turkish media reported that security forces had killed two suspected ISIS militants on the Syrian border on June 25. They said one was planning an attack on the capital Ankara or the city of Adana.

No-one has yet said they carried out the airport attack.

The Hurriyet newspaper identified one of the three bombers as a Chechen but there is no official confirmation.

Turkey’s PM Binali Yildirim has said again that “our thoughts on those responsible for the attack lean towards Islamic State”.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared Wednesday a national day of mourning and said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups.

Detailing the attack, Binali Yildirim said the three men had wanted to pass through the security system but on seeing the controls “took their weapons out of their suitcases and opened fire at random at the security check”.

One attacker detonated his explosives downstairs in the arrivals terminal, Turkish officials said.

The second went upstairs and set off his explosives there while the third waited outside as passengers fled. He then detonated his explosives, causing the most casualties.

A Kalashnikov assault rifle, a handgun and two grenades were found on the bodies, Turkish media said.

In addition to the 42 killed, more than 230 people were injured and dozens remain in critical condition in hospital.

The assault on Ataturk airport – Europe’s third busiest – is the sixth major attack in 2016 targeting either Istanbul or Turkey’s capital, Ankara.

Philippines: Rodrigo Duterte and Leni Robredo Inauguration

0

Rodrigo Duterte has been sworn in as the new president of the Philippines, after winning election in May.

The 71-year-old overthrew the political establishment at the polls, promising a “bloody war” on crime and corruption.

In his inaugural speech the controversial former mayor of Davao City promised to make sweeping changes to the country’s political system.

However, in a nod to his critics Rodrigo Duterte also insisted that he “knows the limits” of his power.

Rodrigo Duterte, who has barely left Davao in the south since his election win, took his oath at a small ceremony at the Malacanang Palace in Manila.

Only state media were permitted to cover the event, but it was streamed live online.

Rodrigo Duterte told the audience he would tackle an “erosion of the people’s trust” in the leaders, the judiciary and public servants.

He added: “As a lawyer and a former prosecutor, I know the limits of the power and authority of the president. I know what is legal and what is not.”

“I know that there are those who do not approve of my methods of fighting criminality. They say that my methods are unorthodox and verge on the illegal.

“My adherence to due process and the rule of law is uncompromising. You mind your work and I will mind mine.”

Rodrigo Duterte also promised to honor international treaties and respect peace deals agreed with rebels at home.

The new vice-president, Leni Robredo, was sworn in at a separate ceremony in Quezon City, in the suburbs of Manila.

Both will both serve a single six-year term.

The two swearing-in ceremonies were being held separately for the first time in the Philippines, which local media attributed to Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to a opt for a relatively small event.

However, there is a notable political and personality gulf between the two leaders.

Leni Robredo, an anti-poverty campaigner and human rights lawyer, was sworn in by the chairman of the poorest ward of a district in her province, as well as the chairman of the ward in which her new office is located.

She won her new position by a wafer-thin margin against Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, the son of late former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whose family has staged a remarkable political comeback since being toppled in 1986.

Leni Robredo is from the same Liberal Party as outgoing President Benigno Aquino III, who oversaw big improvements in economic growth and foreign investment.

Benigno Aquino had less success tackling endemic corruption and inequality, something Rodrigo Duterte has promised to change.
