Italy Earthquake 2016: Mass State Funeral Held for 35 Victims

Italy has held state mass funeral for some of the 290 people killed in August 24 powerful earthquake.

Thirty-five victims from the town of Arquata were mourned at a sports hall in the regional capital, Ascoli Piceno.

The death toll from the 6.2-magnitude earthquake, which struck a mountainous central region, has again risen as more bodies were found.

Italian PM Matteo Renzi was among those attending the funeral along with President Sergio Mattarella, who earlier visited Amatrice, the town with the most casualties.

One of the children’s coffins contained the body of Giulia Rinaldo, whose younger sister survived the earthquake because she was under Giulia’s body.

One of the firefighters, Andrea, had left a moving note on Giulia Rinaldo’s coffin, apologizing for arriving too late, and signing it with a heart symbol.

The coffins will be taken for burial to a cemetery near Arquata, a local official told Ansa news agency.

Most of the earthquake’s victims were Italian, but several foreigners were among those killed.

More aftershocks were registered in the early hours of August 27, one with a magnitude of four.

The ground beneath Accumoli, another severely affected village, sank 8in as a result of the earthquake, satellite images obtained by Italy’s scientific authorities show.

The district which sank is shown in red on this image compiled from data from a Japanese satellite and published by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

Flags are flying at half mast across the country as Italy remembers victims of the quake.

More than 200 people died in Amatrice alone. Along with Arquata and Accumoli, Pescara del Tronto was also hard-hit.

Many bodies have also been brought to a makeshift morgue in an aircraft hangar in the city of Rieti, where relatives have been identifying loved ones.

The first funeral for one of the earthquake’s victims was held on August 26, for the son of a state official who died in Amatrice.

At least 388 people have been treated in hospital for their injuries while more than 2,000 people were made homeless.

The earthquake hit in the early hours of August 24, 65 miles north-east of Rome.

Italy’s government has been criticized for failing to prevent deaths after the 2009 earthquake in nearby L’Aquila left 300 dead.

Historic towns do not have to conform to anti-quake building regulations, which are also often not applied when new buildings are put up.

In addition to emergency funds, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi canceled taxes for residents and announced a new initiative, “Italian Homes”, to tackle criticism over shoddy construction.

Matteo Renzi also said that it was “absurd” to think that Italy could build completely quake-proof buildings.

Donald Trump’s Doctor Wrote Bill of Health in Five Minutes

Donald Trump’s doctor Harold Bornstein has said he spent just 5 minutes on a letter endorsing the Republican candidate’s health, while Trump’s car waited outside.

Dr. Harold Bornstein told NBC News: “In the rush I think some of those words didn’t come out exactly the way they were meant.”

The doctor’s letter said Donald Trump, 70, would be the “healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency”.

Harold Bornstein, of York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, said he “picked up” the candidate’s own “kind of language” when writing it.Donald Trump hails Brexit referendum result

Two weeks before the note was written, Donald Trump tweeted to say he had “instructed my long-time doctor to issue, within two weeks, a full medical report”, adding that it would “show perfection”.

Donald Trump later highlighted the endorsement from Dr. Harold Bornstein, who faced questions about its exaggerated tone.

Dr. Harold Bornstein says he may have overstated the case “so that they [the Trump campaign] would be happy”.

“I think I picked up his kind of language and then I just interpreted it to my own,” he said.

Donald Trump would be the oldest person to be elected US president, were he to win in November. His rival Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is 68-year-old.

The health of two candidates has become a focal point in the campaign, with Donald Trump repeatedly alleging that Hillary Clinton is physically unfit.

Hillary Clinton has hit back at what she says are unfounded allegations, and Donald Trump has faced criticism over the personal nature of the attacks.

Neither candidate has divulged their full medical record. Hillary Clinton released a statement from her doctor, Lisa Bardack, in 2015.

Dr. Lisa Bardack said: “She is excellent physical condition and fit to serve as President of the United States.”

Barack Obama Creates World’s Largest Marine Reserve in Hawaii

President Barack Obama has announced the expansion of Hawaii’s Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

Therefore, the monument has become the world’s largest marine reserve, the White House says.

Barack Obama’s announcement on August 26 quadruples in size a monument originally created by President George W. Bush in 2006.

The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument will now span 582,578 sq miles, more than twice the size of Texas.

The designation bans commercial fishing and any new mining.

The White House says the marine reserve’s expansion is helping to protect more than 7,000 species and improves an ecosystem affected by ocean acidification and warming.

A fact sheet previewing the announcement also states that the expanded area is considered a sacred place for Native Hawaiians.

The expansion was welcomed by environmental campaigners.

Joshua Reichert, an executive vice president at the Pew Charitable Trusts said: “By expanding the monument, President Obama has increased protections for one of the most biologically and culturally significant places on the planet.”

Greenpeace also hailed what it called a “bold decision” that will ban commercial fishing and mineral extraction in the region.

However, some fishing groups have voiced concerns.

Sean Martin, the president of the Hawaii Longline Association told the Associated Press: “We are disappointed that the president has made a decision to close an area nearly the size of the entire state of Alaska without public process.”

“This action will forever prohibit American fishermen from accessing those American waters. Quite a legacy indeed,” he added.

The area is also known for its many shipwrecks and downed aircraft from the Battle of Midway, which marked a major shift in World War Two.

Barack Obama, who was born in Hawaii, will travel to the Midway Atoll next week.

With this announcement, President Obama will have created or expanded 26 national monuments during his time in office.

In 2014, Barack Obama extended the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument south-west of Hawaii, which now covers 490,343 sq miles.

Sarah Palin Warns Donald Trump over Immigration Plan Softening

Sarah Palin has warned Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump of “massive disappointment” if he backs down on his plan to deport undocumented immigrants.

Donald Trump has signaled he will soften his immigration plan, which was a central plank of his primary campaign.

Instead of sending all 11 million people living illegally in the United States, Donald Trump now says only criminals will go.

The former Alaska governor’s backing of Donald Trump in January was regarded as a coup.

Sarah Palin demonstrated as John McCain’s running mate in 2008 that she possesses a rare star power in the Republican Party.Sarah Palin backs Donald Trump

On August 26, Sarah Palin told the Wall Street Journal that “wishy-washy positions” on core positions would result in “massive disappointment”.

“Parts of the message we heard in the last week are clearly not consistent with the stringent position and message that supporters have received all along,” she said.

Donald Trump made his tough line on immigration central to his win in the primary contests, a triumph that was unexpected when he launched his campaign with a controversial attack on Mexican immigrants as “rapists”.

The New York businessman often derided Republican rivals Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio as weak on immigration and his plan to build a wall on the Mexican border became a chant at his rallies.

However, this week Donald Trump has openly talked about how tough it is to break up families and said people who have been in the United States a long time and not broken any laws should stay.

Donald Trump has not backed down on the wall, but staunch conservatives like columnist Ann Coulter and radio host Rush Limbaugh have also expressed concerns about his change of stance on deportations.

Rival Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton dismissed his new policy as “a desperate effort” while Jeb Bush called Donald Trump’s repositioning “abhorrent”.

Jeb Bush: “I can only say that whatever his views are this morning, they might change this afternoon, and they were different than they were last night, and they’ll be different tomorrow.”

Trump’s new campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, insists “nothing has changed in terms of the policies”.

Donald Trump is expected to outline his new immigration policy in a speech next week, after postponing one that was due this week in Colorado.

Issues Americans May Face if Donald Trump is Elected President

There is a very real chance that Donald Trump is going to become the next President of the United States. And, if this happens, there are going to be significant repercussions for everyone. You need to make sure you prepare for what might occur if this happens. These are a few of the ways the country could be affected if Trump becomes President.

Deportation

If you are living in the USA, but you aren’t a naturalised citizen, Trump may well want you deported. This is a very real risk for a lot of US residents if he becomes President. However, you will have grounds to fight a final deportation or removal order. A lot of the time changes in legislation will need to be debated in Congress, and it’s possible the state could reject Trump’s legislation. However, this is something that you need to make sure you prepare for in case it affects you.

Becoming a Laughing Stock

One of the dangers we all face as Americans is becoming a laughing stock of Trump ascends to power. Remember when Jesse Ventura became 38th Governor of Minnesota? Or when Arnie was elected Governor of California? Right, well it will be worse than those two occasions. Much worse. Donald Trump is now almost a caricature of himself. The rest of the world views him as a joke, and if he becomes our leader, we may well be viewed the same way. We have so long been seen as a great superpower of the world, but all that could change if we get a cartoon President.Photo

Economic Downturn

We might also have to prepare ourselves for the possibility of man economic downturn. We’ve had two terms under Obama, and, if Trump takes to office, he is going to want to make big changes. Such a drastic change of direction could lead to a noticeable economic downturn for some time. Especially as Trump is taking an anti-immigration stance. Immigrants provide a pivotal role in the economy of the United States. Indeed, immigrants contribute to over 14% of the US economy. If Trump gets his way and gets rid of the immigrants, then we could see the economy suffer for a while.

Spike in Crime

Trump would likely become the most reckless President due to his volatile opinions and incendiary comments. Because of the racist and bigoted views championed by Trump, he has given a voice to unsavoury characters. This means that if he is inaugurated, we can expect to see a huge spike in crime for the first couple of months. People will take to the streets in outrage, while others will use it as a catalyst to air their questionable beliefs and ideals. This is likely to lead to confrontation, rally’s, and hate crime dominating for much of the first few weeks and months. This may well not happen, of course. But, it is the most likely outcome for the country. A spike in crime is something that usually follows political unrest and defining moments in the country’s history.

If the unthinkable should happen, and Trump is elected, it could be a monumental moment in American history. The fallout will be significant, and there is no way of knowing what the future holds. One thing is for sure, and that is that many people may regret their decision when push comes to shove.

Richard Branson Injured In Bike Crash

0

Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has been injured in a bike crash.

The businessman says he thought he was “going to die” after crashing his bike on Caribbean island Virgin Gorda.

Richard Branson, 66, said he was “extremely fortunate” only to have suffered a cracked cheek and torn ligaments.

He was cycling down a hill when he hit a speed bump, and “the next thing I knew, I was being hurled over the handlebars and my life was literally flashing before my eyes.”

In a post on the Virgin website, Richard Branson said: “I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a sleeping policeman hump in the road head on.

“I really thought I was going to die. I went flying head-first towards the concrete road, but fortunately my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life.

“We’ve since recovered the crumpled bicycle, completely destroyed. My cheek has been badly damaged and my knee, chin, shoulder and body severely cut.”

Richard Branson said his assistant, Helen, was first on the scene as he was “lying prostrate on the road” and then another member of his team, George, “sprinted from the bottom of the hill” to assist.

The businessman traveled to Miami for X-rays and scans, and later posted pictures online showing his bloodied face.

The accident happened on the fifth anniversary of a fire which destroyed Richard Branson’s luxury home on Necker Island.

Richard Branson was cycling with his children Holly and Sam as part of his training for the Virgin Strive Challenge endurance event from the base of the Matterhorn in the Alps to the summit of Mount Etna in Sicily.

He still hopes to take part in the event.

“My attitude has always been, if you fall flat on your face, at least you’re moving forward,” he said.

“All you have to do is get back up and try again. At least I’m practicing what I preach – though a little too literally!”

Richard Branson made headlines earlier this week when his Twitter account posted CCTV images appearing to show British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn walking past empty unreserved train seats before he was filmed sitting on the floor complaining about “ram-packed” carriages on a Virgin Trains service.

Italy Earthquake 2016: State of Emergency Declared In Worst Hit Regions

A state of emergency has been declared in Italy’s regions worst hit by August 24 earthquake as hopes of finding more survivors fade.

Italian PM Matteo Renzi has pledged €50 million in funds for rebuilding.

At least 268 people are now reported dead and 400 were injured. Rescue teams have continued to search the rubble of toppled buildings for a second night.

However, hundreds of aftershocks have hampered the efforts of the 5,000 rescuers.

Another magnitude-4.7 tremor struck on August 26.

In addition to the funds, Matteo Renzi canceled taxes for residents and announced a new initiative, “Italian Homes”, to tackle criticism over shoddy construction.

Photo ANSA
Photo ANSA

He also said that it was “absurd” to think that Italy could build completely quake-proof buildings.

The move follows criticism in the Italian media over building standards in high-risk areas. Some of the buildings that collapsed had recently been renovated.

Historic towns do not have to conform to anti-quake building regulations, which are also often not applied when new buildings are put up.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit in the early hours of August 24, 65 miles north-east of Rome in mountainous central Italy.

The worst affected towns – Amatrice, Arquata, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto – are usually sparsely populated but have been swelled by tourists visiting for summer, making estimates for the precise number missing difficult.

More than 200 people died in Amatrice alone.

Bodies are still being found in the town, including one discovered in the rubble of the Hotel Roma in the city on August 25.

An official with the fire department, Lorenzo Botti, admitted they were facing a race against time.

However, other rescuers said there was still hope, noting that one survivor was pulled from ruins in L’Aquila in 2009 three days after an earthquake that killed more than 300 people.

Search teams have asked locals to disable their Wi-Fi passwords to help rescue workers communicate more effectively.

Police have also arrested a man for attempting to break into and loot an empty home in the town, Ansa reported.

Prince’s Paisley Park Mansion to Open for Public Tours

Prince’s Paisley Park mansion and studio complex is to open to the public six months after his death.

The pop star died in an elevator at the 65,000 square-foot complex in Minneapolis in April.

The trust company overseeing his estate announced Paisley Park will open for daily public tours from October 6, provided the city approves the plan.

The singer’s sister, Tyka Nelson, said: “Opening Paisley Park is something that Prince always wanted to do.”

Prince died after an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl.

Officials investigating Prince’s death said earlier this week the pills had been mislabelled as hydrocodone, a weaker type of opioid.

“Only a few hundred people have had the rare opportunity to tour the estate during [Prince’s] lifetime,” Tyka Nelson said.

“Now, fans from around the world will be able to experience Prince’s world for the first time as we open the doors to this incredible place.”

The company that runs Elvis Presley’s Graceland will manage the project.

More than 20 million people have visited Graceland, where Elvis Presley died in 1977, since it opened to the public – with around 600,000 annual visitors in recent years.

The plan says the tours will include studios where Prince recorded and mixed his songs, and the soundstage where he rehearsed for tours and hosted private concerts.

Tickets will cost $38.50 for the 70-minute tour but VIP tours will also be offered to small groups.

As the plan will require approval from the city, a planning commission hearing has been scheduled for September 20.

Ryan Lochte Charged In Brazil with Making False Statement

0

Ryan Lochte has been charged by Brazilian police with making a false statement about being robbed at gunpoint during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the police statement, the court issues a summons for the Olympic swimmer.

The US State Department said it was aware of the request.

Ryan Lochte flew out of Brazil after the Games before he could be questioned about the alleged false claim.

The swimmer initially claimed that he and three fellow athletes were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi by men with a police badge as they returned to the Olympic village from a party.

Photo Wikipedia
Photo Wikipedia

However, the police say Ryan Lochte made up the story and officers produced video evidence that the group were actually challenged by security guards after they had vandalized a gas station toilet.

Ryan Lochte, 32, has admitted he was drunk and apologized, but he now has to decide whether or not to return to Brazil to defend the charges.

The crime faces a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison and the swimmer can be tried in his absence.

However, it is understood that if Ryan Lochte did attend the hearing he could agree to pay a fine like fellow swimmer Jimmy Feigen, who was with him during the incident.

Jimmy Feigen agreed to donate nearly $11,000 to a Brazilian charity to resolve the case.

The US and Brazil have an extradition treaty which Brazil has flouted in the past. US authorities could take the same stance if Ryan Lochte is found guilty.

Donald Trump Accuses Hillary Clinton of Taking Advantage of African-American Community

In his latest appeal to minority voters, Donald Trump has called Democratic rival Hillary Clinton a “bigot”.

Speaking at a Mississippi rally, the Republican presidential nominee said his opponent “sees people of color only as votes not as human beings worthy of a better future”.

Donald Trump added that Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party had taken advantage of the African-American community.

Hillary Clinton fired back, saying “he is taking a hate movement mainstream”.

She called out Donald Trump for questioning the citizenship of President Barack Obama and for failing to disavow former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, adding that he was “peddling bigotry and prejudice and paranoia”.Donald Trump hails Brexit referendum result

Donald Trump took aim at Hillary Clinton during a campaign stop in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 24, where he was joined by Britain’s outgoing UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

Nigel Farage, who is viewed as a major force behind Brexit, told Trump supporters to “get your walking boots on” and begin campaigning.

In recent days, Donald Trump has attempted to court African-Americans after failing to gain support among this key voting bloc.

Only about 2% of black voters say they will vote for Donald Trump, according to current polls.

Last week, the billionaire made a direct appeal to black voters during a rally in Michigan, where he told a nearly all-white crowd that African-Americans “are living in poverty” and “their schools are no good”.

In an unscripted plea, Donald Trump added: “What do you have to lose?”

Donald Trump has combined his minority outreach with his latest line of attack on Hillary Clinton in the deep-red state of Mississippi.

“She doesn’t care what her policies have done to your communities. She has no remorse,” he said on August 24.

“She’s going to do nothing for Hispanics and African-Americans.”

Hillary Clinton is due to speak later in Reno, Nevada, where she will accuse Donald Trump of “embracing extremism and presenting a divisive and dystopian view of America”.

The polls have Hillary Clinton ahead nationally and in key states, with about 80 days to go before the election.

Italy Earthquake 2016: Death Toll Rises to 247

Italy’s earthquake death toll has risen to at least 247 as thousands of rescuers continue efforts to find survivors.

According to officials, dozens are believed trapped in ruined Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, in mountainous central Italy.

The search went on through the night, and there was a strong aftershock which rocked already damaged buildings.

More than 4,300 rescuers are using heavy lifting equipment and their bare hands.

Many of the victims were children, the health minister said, and there were warnings the toll could rise further.

The 6.2-magnitude quake hit at 03:36 local time on August 24, at 65 miles north-east of Rome.

There were several hundred tremors after the quake, some of which were felt in Rome.

The latest death toll was given on Thursday morning – 190 deaths in Rieti province and 57 in neighboring Ascoli Piceno province.

Rescuers said they had pulled five bodies from the ruins of the Hotel Roma in the historic town of Amatrice. As many as 70 tourists were staying at the hotel when the quake struck. Many are feared to be in the rubble, though several were pulled out and given medical care.

Yesterday there were cheers in the village of Pescara del Tronto when a young girl was pulled alive from the rubble after being trapped for 17 hours. Almost all the houses there had collapsed, the mayor said.

The earthquake struck small towns and villages in the mountainous area where the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Le Marche meet.

Hope Solo Suspended from US Women’s Soccer for Six Months

US Soccer has suspended goalkeeper Hope Solo for six months for describing Olympic opponents Sweden as “a bunch of cowards”

Hope Solo, 35, was speaking after Sweden knocked her side out of Rio 2016 in the quarter-finals, winning 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Sweden lost 2-1 to Germany in the Olympic final.

US Soccer president Sunil Gulati said Hope Solo’s comments were “unacceptable”.

World Cup winner Hope Solo wrote on her Facebook page that she was “saddened” by the decision.

“I could not be the player I am without being the person I am, even when I haven’t made the best choices or said the right things,” the goalkeeper added.

Hope Solo will not be eligible for selection until February.

US Soccer has only announced two matches in that period, against Thailand and the Netherlands next month.

Hope Solo could miss several games once the team’s fixture list is finalized – they played 14 games in the same six months of the 2015-2016 season.

Last year, Hope Solo was suspended for 30 days following an incident during a training camp.

Media reports claimed Hope Solo was in the car when husband Jerramy Stevens was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Airlander 10 Crash: World’s Largest Aircraft Nosedives During Test Flight

The Airlander 10, the world’s largest and longest aircraft, has crashed after on landing during its second test flight near London, the UK.

The 302ft long aircraft – which is part plane and part airship – was damaged during the flight from Cardington Airfield in Bedfordshire.

The £25 million ($40 million) aircraft sustained damage to its cockpit when it hit the ground in a slow nosedive.

The Airlander 10 developer Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) said all the crew were “safe and well”.

A HAV spokesman said: “The flight went really well and the only issue was when it landed.”

Photo Flickr
Photo Flickr

The company has denied claims from a witness that a line hanging down from the vehicle hit a telegraph pole about two fields away from its landing.

In a statement HAV said: “The Airlander experienced a heavy landing and the front of the flight deck has sustained some damage which is currently being assessed.”

The Airlander 10 had just completed its planned 100-minute flight when it nosedived as it came in to land.

“Hybrid Air Vehicles runs a robust set of procedures for flight test activities and investigation of issues,” the company said.

“We will be running through these in the days ahead as we continue the development of the Airlander aircraft.”

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has confirmed it is investigating the crash, but said it would not be sending a team to the site.

The Airlander 10 had its first test flight from the airfield on August 17.

Christened the Martha Gwyn, the Airlander 10 was first developed for the US government as a surveillance aircraft but the project was shelved amid defense cutbacks.

HAV launched a campaign to return the Airlander 10 to the skies in May 2015.

The company claims the aircraft could be used for a variety of functions such as surveillance, communications, delivering aid and even passenger travel.

HAV says the Airlander 10 will be able to stay airborne for about five days during manned flights.

The developer hopes to be building 10 Airlanders a year by 2021.

Italy Earthquake 2016: Death Toll Rises to 120

Italy’s earthquake death toll has risen to at least 120, PM Matteo Renzi has said.

Other 368 people have been injured in the earthquake that hit a mountainous area of central Italy, he added.

The 6.2-magnitude quake struck at 03:36 local time, 65 miles north-east of Rome, not far from Perugia.

Many of the dead were in the historic town of Amatrice, where the mayor said three-quarters of the town was destroyed, and in nearby Accumoli.

Many people are still believed to be buried under rubble.

“This is not a final toll,” Matteo Renzi warned as he gave the latest figures.

The prime minister had earlier paid tribute to the volunteers and civil defense officials who had rushed to the scene in the middle of the night and used their bare hands to dig for survivors.

Photo ANSA
Photo ANSA

He promised “no family, no city, no hamlet will be left behind”.

The earthquake was felt across Italy, from Bologna in the north to Naples in the south. There have been dozens of aftershocks.

Hardest hit were the small towns and villages in the mountainous area where the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Le Marche meet.

Italy’s civil protection department said that at least 73 people were now known to have been killed.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said it had recorded more than 200 aftershocks by 15:00 on August 24.

Italy is no stranger to earthquakes: in 2009 a tremor killed more than 300 people in L’Aquila and in May 2012 two tremors nine days apart killed more than 20 people in the northern Emilia Romagna region.

Rescue teams from around the country have been sent to the affected region.

The area is mountainous and access is difficult. Tent camps are being set up for those who need shelter, while others will be accommodated in buildings such as gymnasiums.

Many of the people affected are on holiday.

The national blood donation service has appealed for donors to come forward.

Mediterranean seismicity is driven by the great collision between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates; but when it comes down to the specifics of this latest quake, the details are far more complicated.

The Tyrrhenian Basin, or Sea, which lies to the west of Italy, between the mainland and Sardinia/Corsica, is slowly opening up.

Scientists say this is contributing to extension, or “pull-apart”, along the Apennines. This stress is compounded by movement in the east, in the Adriatic.

The result is a major fault system that runs the length of the mountain range with a series of smaller faults that fan off to the sides. The foundations of cities like Perugia and L’Aquila stand on top of it all.

Turkish Tanks Roll Across Syrian Border

0

Turkey has sent tanks and other vehicles across the Syrian border after heavy shelling of an area held by ISIS.

Military sources told Turkish media 70 targets in the Jarablus area had been destroyed by artillery and rocket strikes, and 12 by air strikes.

Syrian rebels who are following the advance say they have entered the town of Jarablus itself.

The operation is aimed against both ISIS and Kurdish fighters.

Turkey shelled Syrian Kurdish forces in the region this week, determined not to let them fill the vacuum if ISIS leaves.

Photo Wikipedia
Photo Wikipedia

US Vice-President Joe Biden warned Kurdish forces in Syria they would lose US support if they advanced west of the River Euphrates.

Making the highest-ranking visit to Ankara by a Western official since the failed Turkish coup on July 15, Joe Biden also sought to dispel any doubts about America’s solidarity with its NATO ally.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced in a speech in Ankara: “At 04:00 [01:00 GMT] our forces began an operation against the Daesh [ISIS] and PYD [Kurdish Democratic Union Party] terror groups.”

Operation Euphrates Shield was aimed at “putting an end” to problems on the border, he said.

Between 9 and 12 tanks crossed the border, followed by pick-up trucks believed to be carrying Turkish-backed Syrian rebels from the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The FSA said progress was slow because of mines planted by ISIS fighters in the area. There were no immediate reports of fighting on the way in.

Turkey has vowed to “completely cleanse” ISIS from its border region, blaming the group for a bomb attack on a wedding that killed at least 54 people in Gaziantep on August 20.

This is Turkey’s first known ground incursion into Syria since a brief operation to relocate the tomb of Suleyman Shah, a revered Ottoman figure, in February 2015.

The air strikes are Turkey’s first inside Syria since the downing of a Russian jet in November. Moscow and Ankara only mended ties in June after punitive Russian sanctions.

Fighters from the Syrian Kurd YPG militia – the military wing of the PYD – led the battle to drive ISIS out of the strategic crossroads town of Manbij this month.

Responding to news of the Turkish advance, PYD leader Saleh Moslem tweeted that Turkey was now in the “Syrian quagmire” and would be defeated like ISIS.

Tesla Launches New Battery Pack for Model S and X Cars

0

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has announced the electric car maker is launching a new battery pack for the performance versions of its Model S and X cars that will extend the range and mean faster acceleration.

Elon Musk hailed the upgraded charger as a “profound milestone”.

The battery cell chemistry is the same, but the reconfigured product stored more energy in the same space, he said.

Tesla, which this month posted a steeper-than-expected loss, is adding a new sedan car to its sports line-up.

Elon Musk claimed that the new 100-kilowatt hour battery pack means high-end versions of the Model S sedan, called the P100D, will be the world’s fastest accelerating car in production.

The P100D will do 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds. Elon Musk said there were faster cars on the market, but these were limited-run vehicles, while the Tesla is aimed at the mass market, he said.

“These are very profound milestones and I think will help convince people around the world that electric is the future,” Elon Musk said on a conference call with journalists.

The new battery extends the range of performance versions of the new Model S well beyond 300 miles, from about 290 miles, Tesla said.

Elon Musk said that in cool weather, a driver could travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles – a nearly 400 mile drive – without recharging.

In May 2016, Tesla said it was stepping up production plans for its upcoming Model 3 mass-market sedan and would build a total of 500,000 all-electric vehicles in 2018, two years ahead of schedule.

The Model S and X vehicles with the upgraded batteries will help fund the more affordable Model 3 still in development, Elon Musk said. The performance versions of the S and X without the new battery currently start at $108,000 and $115,500, respectively.

However, Tesla Motors also warned that investment would ramp up as well.

The company has been under investigation from US safety regulators following a fatal crash in Florida earlier this year involving its drive-assistance feature known as Autopilot.

Elon Musk said a software update of the feature is nearing completion, adding that it will result in “material improvements in the autonomy of the car”.

You Are Living Green…Is Your Energy Provider Doing the Same?

In a report titled “El New Energy Top 100 Green Utilities,” Energy Intel ranks worldwide utility companies by their greenness. The USA ranks a few times in the top twenty, but Canada doesn’t make an appearance until number 27. Hydro-Quebec made the top twenty in 2014, but has since declined.

A brief look at Canada’s greenest utilities as ranked by Energy Intel:

27. Hydro-Quebec

28. Ontario Power Generation

30. BC Hydro

67. TransAlta

The good thing is that certain parts of Canada feature a deregulated market, which means citizens can pick and choose who provides their utilities. For example, Edmonton residents can search Edmonton gas prices in the deregulated markets and compare the low-cost gas providers and their level of greenness. Canada’s residents are urged to choose providers that are affordable to them, but also are dedicated to improving their eco-friendliness.

China’s Utilities are Greener than Canada’s?

China’s utility companies actually take more top spots than Canada’s companies, which is surprising because China is the world’s biggest carbon emitter; and yet, Chinese utility companies have fewer carbon emissions and more renewables than Canadian utility companies.

Canada’s ranking is surprising because Canada is a leader in clean energy with many communities collecting energy from clean sources such as wind, water, sun, and recycled waste. If you’re a citizen in Canada, you’re probably thinking, What about “Let’s Go Green, Canada?” or What about new prime minister Trudeau’s promises to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels? or I’m green in my home, so why isn’t that reflected? The companies aren’t ranked by what you’re using, but rather what they’re expending.

How Winners are Chosen

Rankings are determined by points. The more points a company has, the higher they rank on the list. At most, a company can receive 300 points. For example, the number one greenest utility company, Acciona from Spain, received a grand total of 234 points. Companies can receive up to 100 points in regards to their carbon dioxide emissions or CO2 per megawatt hour generated, and up to 200 points for their non-hydro renewable capacity.

How green you are really has little effect on how green your utility company is; however, that doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference and help your utility company go green. Here are three ways you can make a difference and encourage your utility company to be greener:

1. Write a letter to the CEO

2. Vote for green policies and greener energy policies

3. Switch to a utility company that creates energy from renewable sources, such as wind turbines (this sends a strong message to other companies that if they want to retain their customers they should put their focus on renewables)

You can help your Canadian energy provider be as green as you are. By promoting the value of green utility providers, Canada may be able to improve its 2016 utility rankings by virtue of listening to its people. Right now, Canada has a lot of great ideas and is a leader in building renewable energy sources, so the future is looking bright for Canada’s utility providers.

Italy Earthquake: At Least 37 People Dead and 150 Missing

At least 37 people are reported and dead and many others trapped under rubble after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake has hit central Italy.

Many of the dead were in the village of Pescara del Tronto which was leveled to the ground and there were fears the number could rise.

Much of the town of Amatrice was reduced to rubble and a family of four is feared dead nearby in Accumoli.

The earthquake hit at 03:36 local time, 65 miles north-east of Rome.

Although it struck at a shallow depth of 6 miles, its intensity was compared to the Aquila earthquake in April 2009 in which 309 people died. The epicenter was around Accumoli where several people died.

Some buildings in Rome shook for 20 seconds as the quake struck an area between the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Marche. The tremor was also felt from Bologna in the north to Naples in the south.

The highest casualties were reported in the small village of Pescara del Tronto, where 10 people were reported dead, among them children. Other 20 people have been taken to hospital.

Two boys aged 4 and 7 were pulled alive from the rubble of the house they had been staying in with their grandmother, Ansa news agency reported. Rescuers said they had been sheltering under a bed.

More damage was reported a short distance up the road in Arquata del Tronto.

Some of the worst damage was in the town of Amatrice, where at least five died and rescue efforts were under way to find survivors.

The main street through the town has been devastated and emergency workers are trying to reach six people in a collapsed building.

In Accumoli, a short distance to the north, Mayor Stefano Petrucci said one person had been pulled out of the rubble during the night.

Seismologist Andrea Tertulliani said there were sure to be further, numerous shocks that would probably diminish in intensity.

Italy’s Civil Protection agency described the earthquake as “severe”.

Rescue teams are being sent to the worst-hit areas, the prime minister’s office said.

The earthquake was initially reported as being magnitude 6.4. It was followed by several powerful aftershocks, La Repubblica reported.

North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile from Submarine

0

According to South Korean and US officials, North Korea has fired a ballistic missile from a submarine off its east coast.

The KN-11 missile was launched from waters near Sinpo and flew about 300 miles before falling into the Sea of Japan, a US official said.

Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe said it fell inside Japan’s Air Defense Identification Zone, calling it a “reckless act”.

The move comes as South Korea and the US begin annual military drills, which routinely anger Pyongyang.

Ulchi Freedom involves about 80,000 US and South Korean troops in a largely computer-simulated defense of South Korea from a fictional North Korean invasion.

North Korea, which sees these drills as a rehearsal for invasion, recently warned they were pushing the Korean peninsula towards the brink of war and threatened a “pre-emptive nuclear strike” in retaliation.

The communist country is banned by the UN from any use of ballistic or nuclear technology. But in recent months it has carried out repeated missile launches, and is believed to be close to conducting its fifth test of a nuclear device.

Today’s launch appears to have been its most successful test yet of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

SLBMs are of particular concern because of the mobility of submarines and the ease with which launch preparation can remain undetected.

South Korea’s military said it “seemed to be aimed at raising military tension in response to the Seoul-Washington military drill”, the Yonhap news agency reports.

It said it would “sternly and strongly respond to any provocation by North Korea”.

Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe confirmed reports that the missile fell into Japan’s ADIZ, an area of airspace over which a country exercises security controls.

He said it was an “unforgivable, reckless act” which “poses a grave threat to Japan’s security”.

The US State Department said it “strongly condemned” this, and previous missile tests, and would raise concerns at the UN.

North Korea’s launch also coincided with a meeting of foreign ministers from Japan, China and South Korea in Tokyo.

South Africa Elections 2016: ANC Loses Control In Johannesburg

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) party has lost control of Johannesburg, the country’s largest city and economic center.

Herman Mashaba from the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) has been elected as mayor by Johannesburg council.

The ANC had run Johannesburg since the fall of apartheid more than 20 years ago. It lost its council majority in local elections, although it is still the largest party.

It has also lost control of the capital Pretoria and Cape Town.

Of South Africa’s six biggest cities, the ANC only won an outright majority in Durban, seen as a stronghold for South African President Jacob Zuma.

On August 22, there was drama at the Johannesburg council meeting, which lasted 11 hours.

A scuffle broke out between opposition party members and electoral commission officials and an ANC councilor who was sworn in earlier in the day collapsed and died shortly after Herman Mashaba was elected.

The ANC had won 44.5% of the vote, more than the DA’s 38.4%. The left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 11% found itself in the position of kingmaker and refused to give its votes to the ANC.

Herman Mashaba, a 56-year-old businessman, has promised to reform Johannesburg administration.

“As of this evening, corruption is declared public enemy number one in this city,” he told cheering supporters.

“Public monies that have been misspent, misused, over the last five, 10 years or so … we’re going to take this money, we’re going to look after it, so that we can provide basic services to our people.”

Herman Mashaba also pledged to tackle unemployment saying: “Over 800,000 of our residents, one-in-three, are today unemployed. We need to address this and we need to address this as a matter of urgency.”

Forty Knives Removed from Indian Man’s Stomach

Indian doctors in the northern city of Amritsar say they have surgically removed 40 knives from a man’s stomach.

The 42-year-old man had swallowed the knives over a period of three months.

He was hospitalized last week after suffering severe pain in his stomach.

Doctors found out that he had been eating knives after conducting diagnostic tests.

The man is recovering in the hospital and is out of danger.

The surgery involved a team of five doctors and it took them five hours to finish the operation to remove the knives.

Doctors are now trying to find out why he was swallowing knives but say it seems like he was suffering from some kind of physiological disorder.

Even his family didn’t know about his habit of swallowing knives, doctors say.

Gaziantep Attack: Turkey Launches Artillery Strikes on ISIS and Kurdish Targets

0

Turkey has launched new artillery strikes on ISIS targets at Jarablus, northern Syria, amid reports Syrian rebels are to launch an offensive against the Islamist group.

Some 1,500 Turkish-backed Syrian rebels are thought to be in Gaziantep waiting to attack.

A bomb attack on a Kurdish wedding there killed 54 people on August 20.

Turkey also shelled positions at Manbij held by Kurdish YPG fighters, who have been advancing against ISIS.

According to new reports, the attack in Gaziantep, blamed on ISIS, may have been spurred by reports of the imminent Syrian rebel offensive.

Meanwhile, more victims of the suicide attack are being identified.

On August 23, Turkish artillery fired at least 40 shells at ISIS positions in the Jarablus area after two mortar bombs landed in the Turkish town of Karkamis, just across the border, Turkish media report.

Nobody was hurt in the attack on Karkamis.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said ISIS should be “completely cleansed” from northern Syria.

On August 22, Turkey also shelled of ISIS positions but equally the bombardment of Kurdish YPG positions in the Manbij area.

A Turkish official quoted by Reuters said artillery had fired on the Kurds 20 times.

The YPG has been at the forefront of the recent advance against ISIS in northern Syria, leading the liberation of Manbij this month and driving the jihadists towards Jarablus.

However, Turkey links them to its own Kurdish insurgents, the PKK, and is determined to keep them away from its border with Syria.

The fighters poised to enter Syria from Gaziantep are believed to be Turkish-backed Syrian rebels.

A senior rebel official quoted by Reuters said they were fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army.

It is believed that any such operation would be aimed at frustrating any further advance by the Kurds.

The Kurds themselves have non-Kurdish Syrian allies, fighting alongside the YPG under the banner of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The identity and motive of the suicide bomber who attacked the wedding party have yet to be revealed.

Soon after the attack, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said ISIS was the likely perpetrator but PM Binali Yildirim said on August 22 that investigators actually did “not have a clue”.

The prime minister downplayed earlier reports that the attacker was a teenager, saying this could not be confirmed.

What is known is that it was a Kurdish wedding and ISIS has targeted Turkish Kurds in the past.

Many of the victims were children as young as 4-year-old.

Sixty-six people are still in hospital, 14 of them in a serious condition, Turkey’s Dogan news agency reported.

How Ramen Noodles Becomes Most Popular US Prison Currency

0

According to a recent study, ramen noodles has become the most valuable commodity in US prisons overtaking tobacco.

The shift was a response to a decline in the quantity and quality of food on offer, the study says.

Study author Michael Gibson-Light said: “Because it is cheap, tasty, and rich in calories, ramen has become so valuable that it is used to exchange for other goods.”

According to US prison data, spending has not kept pace with the number of inmates.

Michael Gibson-Light said staff and inmates at the prison he visited said the amount of food being provided had decreased steadily over decades and warned the shift could have serious implications.

“Prisoners are so unhappy with the quality and quantity of prison food that they receive that they have begun relying on ramen noodles – a cheap, durable food product – as a form of money in the underground economy,” he said.

“The form of money is not something that changes often or easily, even in the prison underground economy; it takes a major issue or shock to initiate such a change,” Michael Gibson-Light added.

The noodles are exchanged for goods including other food items, clothing, hygiene products and even services such as laundry and bunk cleaning, he said.

Other inmates use them as bargaining chips in gambling when playing card games or participating in football pools.

Ramen noodles are also replacing other traditional forms of prison currency, such as stamps and envelopes, the study found.

The shift was taking place across different groups within prisons and was not a response to bans on tobacco products within the prison system, Michael Gibson-Light said.

The researcher called for more research into what the reduction in food could mean for the care of prisoners.

All states spent about $48.5 billion on prisoners in 2010, 5.6% less than in 2009, according to the US Bureau of Prisons.

Ryan Lochte Scandal: Speedo and Other Sponsors Drop Olympic Swimmer

0

Speedo, Ralph Lauren and other two sponsors have dropped Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte following Rio Olympics scandal.

They were followed by announcements from skin care company Syneron-Candela and Japanese mattress maker Airweave.

The move comes after Ryan Lochte, 32, lied about being robbed at gunpoint by a policeman after a night out during the Rio Olympics.

Ryan Lochte, a 12-time Olympic gold medalist, has earned millions of dollars through endorsements.

Speedo, the biggest sponsor of the four, said: “We cannot condone behavior that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for.”

Ryan Lochte said he respected Speedo’s decision, and thanked the company.

“I am grateful for the opportunities that our partnership has afforded me over the years,” the swimmer said.

Ralph Lauren, which has removed some of Ryan Lochte’s images from its website, said its sponsorship of the swimmer had been only for the Rio Games and would not be renewed.

Airweave and Ralph Lauren both stressed that they would continue their support of the US Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Syneron-Candela said: “We hold our employees to high standards, and we expect the same of our business partners.”

Speedo said it would donate a $50,000 portion of Ryan Lochte’s sponsorship fee to the charity Save The Children’s Brazilian operation.

The value of Ryan Lochte’s Speedo sponsorship has not been disclosed. The contract reportedly expires this year after 10 years.

Forbes magazine calculated that in the year of the 2012 London Olympics, Ryan Lochte earned about $2 million in sponsorships from companies such as Gillette, Nissan, AT&T and Gatorade.

Ryan Lochte’s performance at Rio did not reach the heights of his London triumph, but Forbes estimated the athlete’s endorsements would still have been between $1 million-$2 million.

The saga started when Ryan Lochte and three team-mates returned to the Olympic village after a late night out in Rio.

They tried, unsuccessfully, to use the locked toilet at a garage and urinated outside instead.

After first claiming that Ryan Lochte and his three team-mates had been robbed by bogus policemen, Lochte back-tracked and admitted he had, while still drunk, “left details out” and “over-exaggerated some parts of the story”.

Despite the evidence against him, including CCTV footage, he has however denied that he actually lied in his initial account to Brazilian police.

Ryan Lochte’s behavior has been met with disdain in the US and he has been widely pilloried in the US media.

On August 19, the New York Post carried a front-page headline describing him as the “Ugly American”, along with the slogan “Liar, Liar, Speedo on fire”.

Ryan Lochte is one of the most successful swimmers in history, with 12 Olympic medals, and he once had his own reality TV show.

In Rio, Ryan Lochte swam in two events, winning a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay along with team-mate Jack Conger.

3 Strategies You Can Use To Successfully Trade Binary Options

0

Binary options are financial derivatives in which the payoff is either a fixed monetary amount or nothing. Binary options have previously only been available to institutional investors and large corporations and were mainly used for currency hedging purposes. However, binary options have recently also become available for retail investors who are looking to place bets on stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies or indices.

How do binary options work?

Online binary options brokerages, such as Morton Finance, always quote binary options with a two-way price. An example would be 49.50/50.50. If you want to go ‘long’ and buy a binary option on the underlying asset (such as a stock, commodity, currency or index), you buy it at the offer price, which would be 50.50. Should the underlying asset close up within the pre-defined time horizon (say 5 minutes) your profit would be 49.50 times your investment per point (say USD 5). So, if we were to buy USD 5 per point at 50.50 and the underlying asset closes higher after 5 minutes, we would generate a profit of USD 5 * (100-50.50) = USD 247.50. Adversely, if the underlying asset would end up lower after 5mins, then you would make a loss of USD 5 * (0-50.50) = USD 252.50. The value of a binary option at expiry is always either 0 or 100. Therefore, your potential loss is limited, which helps you manage your loss exposure when trading binary options.

Binary options trading strategies

However, as with all financial trading, it is important to have the right strategies in place to ensure the highest chance of consistent profits. Due to the short-term nature of binary options markets, they are best traded when there is a clear short-term trend in asset prices. That way you have a good chance of profitably closing out 5-minute or 10-minute binary options trades.

  1. Trade on the back of company news

Important company announcements, such as better-than-expected or worse-than-expected earnings releases, provide a great opportunity to put on binary options trades as they result in sharp price movements for a short period of time. You can capitalize on such mini-trends by either buying or selling a binary option on the company’s stock depending on whether the company announcement was positive or negative for its stock price. For example, if Goldman Sachs announces worse than expected results, its stock price will drop immediately after the announcement. In this situation, you could sell a binary option on Goldman Sachs stock and will very likely close out a profitable trade.

finance

  1. Trade on the back of economic data announcements

You could apply the same strategy to macroeconomic data and use stock indices as an underlying asset to put on binary options trades post market-moving economic data announcements. For example, if you trade the S&P500 using binary options you can go long after better-than-expected US economic data has been released or go short immediately after worse-than-expected US data has been announced. Hence, if there are better-than-expected US unemployment numbers you can go long the S&P500 using a 5-minute binary option and profit of the immediate jump in US stock prices.

  1. Trade on the back of central banker announcements

Alternatively to economic announcements, you could also apply this strategy to central banker announcements, which have been making in an increasingly high impact on asset prices since the 2008 financial crisis. If a central banker of a major economy such as the US, the UK or Europe hints at future rate cuts or hikes, this will cause a large movement in stocks prices, thereby creating a great opportunity to capitalize on immediate price trends using binary options.
