Donald Trump Reveals He Has A “Great Relationship” with Rodrigo Duterte

0

President Donald Trump has revealed he has a “great relationship” with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, after a highly anticipated meeting in the country’s capital Manila.

It was unclear whether President Trump raised human rights violations in the Philippines, despite calls for him to do so.

Barack Obama’s administration had spoken out against Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, which has killed almost 4,000 people.

President Trump is almost at the end of an extensive Asia tour.

The first meeting between Donald Trump and Rodrigo Duterte, which took place at the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, was closely watched as both are known for striking a controversially outspoken and direct tone.

After the private meeting, President Trump did not respond to questions about whether he had raised the subject of human rights while a spokesman for President Duterte said the topic had not been discussed.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders later said the topic was mentioned briefly in their private meeting, in the context of the war on drugs, but did not give further details.

On November 10, President Duterte said he stabbed a person to death when he was a teenager. His spokesman later said the remark had been “in jest”.

Since coming into office in 2016, Rodrigo Duterte has presided over a massive crackdown on crime in the Philippines, which critics allege undermines fundamental human rights.

The Filipino president has encouraged extrajudicial killings of those involved in the drug trade, and said he would “be happy to slaughter” three million drug addicts in the country.

Police say they have killed almost 4,000 people in anti-drug operations since 2016. More than 2,000 others have been killed in connection with drug-related crimes.

President Trump has previously praised Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, reportedly telling him: “I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem. Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing.”

A Philippine government transcript of the April 29 phone call was later leaked to US media.

President Trump and other leaders attending the ASEAN event had already met on Sunday evening at a gala in Manila ahead of the summit.

During the evening, Rodrigo Duterte took to the stage to sing a Filipino hit love song, afterwards saying it had been “on the orders of the commander-in-chief of the United States”.

Demonstrators took to the streets in Manila on November 12 and 13, protesting against Donald Trump’s visit and carrying banners like “Trump Go Home” and “Ban Trump #1 terrorist”.

Riot police used water cannon and sonic alarms to repel the protesters.

Donald Trump’s visit to the Philippines wraps up the president’s five-country trip to Asia which also had him visit Japan, South Korea, China and Vietnam.

Iran-Iraq 7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Kills at Least 335

At least 335 people have been killed and thousands more injured after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake has shaken the northern border region between Iran and Iraq on November 12.

The majority of those who died were in Iran’s western Kermanshah province. Nearly 4,000 were said to be injured.

Seven people died in Iraq, where people fled into the streets in Baghdad.

Mosques in the capital have been broadcasting prayers through loudspeakers.

One Iranian aid agency said 70,000 people needed shelter after the quake, one of the largest this year.

Iranian state news agency Irna quoted an emergency official as saying 3,950 were injured in Iran alone.

Most of the victims were in the town of Sarpol-e Zahab, about 10 miles from the border, Iran’s emergency services chief, Pir Hossein Koolivand was quoted as saying on Iranian state TV channel Irinn.

Sarpol-e Zahab’s main hospital was severely damaged, leaving it struggling to treat hundreds of wounded, state TV reported.

Many homes in the mountainous area are made of mud bricks and are at risk of collapse in a significant earthquake like the one that struck on November 12.

Damage was reported in at least eight villages, the head of Iran’s Red Crescent Organization, Morteza Salim, told the channel.

“Some other villages have suffered power cuts and their telecommunications system has also been disturbed,” he said.

Rescue teams were being hampered by landslides, Pir Hossein Koolivand said.

On the Iraqi side, the most extensive damage was in the town of Darbandikhan, 47 miles east of the city of Sulaimaniyah in the Kurdistan Region.

“The situation there is very critical,” Kurdish Health Minister Rekawt Hama Rasheed told Reuters.

The Iraqi ministry of health said 321 people had been wounded in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at 21:18 local time, about 19 miles southwest of Halabja, near the northeastern border with Iran.

The strike occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 14.4 miles, and tremors were felt in Turkey, Israel and Kuwait.

Hollywood #MeToo March Seeks to Shed Light on Harassment

0

A #MeToo march has been organized on November 12 in Hollywood in support of victims of assault and harassment.

The march, attended by hundreds of people, follows a torrent of assault and harassment allegations against public figures, set off by revelations about Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

The marchers started on Hollywood Boulevard and walked along the “Walk of Fame” to CNN’s headquarters.

They were predominantly women but many men attended.

The #MeToo hashtag was first used by social activist Tarana Burke and popularized by Italian actress Alyssa Milano in the wake of the Weinstein allegations.

Tarana Burke led November 12 march.

“For every Harvey Weinstein, there’s a hundred more men in the neighborhood who are doing the exact same thing,” the activist wrote on Facebook ahead of the event.

“What we’re seeing, at least for now, is a unity of survivors, a community of survivors that have grown out of this #MeToo viral moment, that I’m just hoping and praying that we can sustain.”

Kevin Spacey and Louis CK are among the high-profile figures accused of harassment over the past few weeks.

On November 10, Louis CK published an apology admitting after years of denials that the allegations were true.

The comedian wrote: “The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly.”

Last month, the New York Times reported that Harvey Weinstein, 65, had settled out of court with eight women who had accused him of harassment and unwanted physical contact.

Harvey Weinstein has also been accused of rape, but said through a spokesperson that he “unequivocally denied” any allegations of non-consensual contacts.

Donald Trump’s Tweet Calls Kim Jong-un Short and Fat

While being in Vietnam for his Asia tour, President Donald Trump have fired off a series of angry tweets about his war of words with Kim Jong-un and his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He wrote: “Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me “old,” when I would NEVER call him “short and fat?” Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!”

On November 11, North Korea denounced President Trump’s Asia trip, calling it a “warmonger’s visit” and again described the president as a “dotard” – a centuries-old insult for an elderly person.

President Trump responded by suggesting in a tweet that Kim Jong-un was “short and fat”, and complaining: “Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!”

The president also tweeted out a short tirade over criticism of his handling of Vladimir Putin.

On November 11, he told reporters that he trusted Vladimir Putin’s word that Russia had not attempted to interfere with the US election, despite a consensus among US intelligence agencies to the contrary.

“When will all the haters and fools out there realize that having a good relationship with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing,” Donald Trump wrote.

“There [sic] always playing politics – bad for our country. I want to solve North Korea, Syria, Ukraine, terrorism, and Russia can greatly help!” he added.

He later clarified, after intense criticism, that he supported US intelligence agencies in their conclusion.

“As to whether or not I believe it or not, I’m with our agencies. I believe in our… intelligence agencies,” the president said.

“What he believes, he believes,” he added, of Vladimir Putin’s belief that Russia did not meddle.

He went on and tweeted: “Does the Fake News Media remember when Crooked Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State, was begging Russia to be our friend with the misspelled reset button? Obama tried also, but he had zero chemistry with Putin.”

Asked at a news conference in Vietnam if he could see himself being friends with Kim Jong-un, President Trump said: “That might be a strange thing to happen but it’s a possibility.

“If it did happen it could be a good thing I can tell you for North Korea, but it could also be good for a lot of other places and be good for the rest the world.

“It could be something that could happen. I don’t know if it will but it would be very, very nice.”

President Trump will travel to Manila on November 12 for the final stop on his Asia tour, before flying back to the US.

Catalonia Crisis: Spain’s PM Mariano Rajoy to Address Campaign Meeting

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will visit Catalonia for the first time since he imposed direct rule on the north-eastern region two weeks ago.

Mariano Rajoy has called regional elections for December and will address a campaign meeting of his center-right party.

On November 11, some 750,000 people protested in Barcelona against the detention of Catalan leaders.

Several Catalan officials were held after the regional government made a unilateral declaration of independence.

The Catalan crisis was sparked by a disputed referendum held in the region in October, which had been barred by the Spanish courts.

According to Catalan officials, the independence campaign won 92% of the vote, from a turnout of 43%. Many of those who were against independence did not cast votes, refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the referendum.

Spain’s government responded to the referendum by dissolving the Catalan parliament, imposing direct rule, and calling a snap regional election on December 21.

Since the crackdown by Madrid, Catalonia’s sacked President Carles Puigdemont has gone into self-imposed exile in Belgium, and his top allies have been prosecuted.

#MeToo: Rebel Wilson Shares Harassment Experience in Hollywood

Rebel Wilson is the latest Hollywood star to reveal her experience of harassment in the entertainment industry.

In a series of tweets, the Australian actress alleged that “a male star in a position of power” had repeatedly asked her to perform an inappropriate act.

“I refused. The whole thing was disgusting,” the Pitch Perfect star said.

Rebel Wilson said the unnamed star’s male friends had attempted to film the incident before she left the room.

The actress complained to the film studio about the encounter, but says she was later “threatened by one of the star’s representatives”.

Rebel Wilson also recounted a second incident which she described as a “hotel room encounter with a top director”.

“Nothing physical happened because the guy’s wife called and started abusing him over the phone for sleeping with actresses… I bolted out of there immediately,” she said.

Wilson added: “If I witness this behavior, whether it happens to me or someone I know, I will no longer be polite.”

A growing number of harassment and rape allegations have been made against public figures in recent weeks.

The allegations have been sparked by multiple women speaking out against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, and a subsequent campaign encouraging victims to share their stories of sexual harassment under the #metoo hashtag.

Donald Trump: “President Putin Feels Insulted by Allegations of Russian Interference in US Election”

President Donald Trump said President Vladimir Putin feels insulted by allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

The two leaders briefly met at the APEC summit in Vietnam.

“He said he absolutely did not meddle in our election,” Donald Trump said.

President Trump, who defeated Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, said the allegations were a “Democratic hit job”.

The US intelligence community concluded earlier that Russia had indeed tried to sway the poll in favor of Donald Trump.

The DoJ has appointed special investigator Robert Mueller to examine any possible collusion involving Donald Trump’s team, and legal action has already been taken against several former aides.

Russia Hacking Briefing: Vladimir Putin Developed a Clear Preference for Donald Trump

President Trump has refused to acknowledge a reported assessment by the CIA and other intelligence agencies that Russia was behind the hacking of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

The contents of the emails, passed to WikiLeaks and posted online, were embarrassing to the Democrats and shook up the presidential campaign, which ended in defeat for Hillary Clinton.

In addition to Robert Mueller’s inquiry, congressional committees have been set up to carry out their own investigations.

Relations between the US and Russia have been strained for years, with the Kremlin long accusing Washington of seeking to sway elections in Russia and other ex-Soviet states including Ukraine and Georgia.

While Russian hackers are widely suspected of involvement, there has been no conclusive link to the Kremlin.

Denying that Russia had tried to interfere last year by fostering contacts with Donald Trump’s campaign, Vladimir Putin told reporters in Vietnam: “Everything about the so-called Russian dossier in the US is a manifestation of a continuing domestic political struggle.”

President Trump said he believed President Putin had been “very insulted by” the allegations and that was “not a good thing” for America.

“He [Vladimir Putin] said he didn’t meddle,” the president added.

“I asked him again.”

Asked if he believed President Putin, Donald Trump replied: “He is very, very strong in the fact that he didn’t do it. You have President Putin very strongly, vehemently says he has nothing to do with that. Now, you are not going to get into an argument, you are going to start talking about Syria and the Ukraine.”

Michael Flynn Offered $15 Million to Help Remove Fethullah Gulen from US

0

Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was reportedly offered $15 million to help forcibly remove Fethullah Gulen from the US and deliver him to Turkey.

Michael Flynn and his son discussed the alleged plot with Turkish representatives, NBC News and Wall Street Journal report.

The matter is said to be under scrutiny in the wider DoJ investigation of alleged Russian election meddling.

Michael Flynn resigned after misleading the White House about meeting an envoy.

The alleged plot to remove the Muslim cleric was first revealed in March 2017 by former CIA Director James Woolsey.

The Turkish government accuses Fethullah Gulen, who lives in Pennsylvania, of being behind last year’s failed coup.

Fethullah Gulen is viewed as chief political rival to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has repeatedly called for his extradition from the US.

According to the Wall Street Journal, special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is focusing on a meeting in mid-December between Michael Flynn and Turkish officials in New York.

Michael Flynn reportedly discussed having Fethullah Gulen transported on a private jet to the Turkish prison island of Imrali.

He was serving on the White House transition team during the reported meeting, which came a month before he joined the Trump administration.

Michael Flynn also met Turkish representatives in September 2016, according to James Woolsey, a board member for Flynn’s consultancy.

James Woolsey has previously told CNN that in September, “there was at least some strong suggestion by one or more of the Americans present at the meeting that we would be able, the United States would be able, through them, to be able to get hold of Gulen”.

NBC reported that federal investigators are also looking into whether Michael Flynn tried to push for the return of Fethullah Gulen to Turkey during his time as White House national security adviser.

A spokesman for Michael Flynn’s company has denied he discussed any illegal actions with the Turks.

Michael Flynn was the first aide in Donald Trump’s White House to resign, after only 23 days on the job.

The retired lieutenant general had admitted lying to VP Mike Pence about a meeting with the Russian ambassador in which the lifting of US sanctions was discussed.

Michael Flynn also failed to register as a lobbyist for the Turkish government while he was seeking White House security clearance.

In 2016, his consultancy Flynn Intel Group was paid $530,000 for lobbying on behalf of the Turkish government – work which required him to register as “a foreign agent”.

According to his lawyer , Michael Flynn did not register because he was working for a Turkish businessman, rather than a government official.

Investigators are also looking into the actions of his son, Michel Flynn Jr., who worked closely with him at Flynn Intel Group.

According to both publications, Michael Flynn and the meeting participants discussed a way to free Turkish-Iranian gold trader Reza Zarrab, who is in a US jail over charges that he evaded US sanctions on Iran.

APEC Summit Vietnam: President Donald Trump Says US Will No Longer Tolerate Chronic Trade Abuse

In a defiant address at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in Vietnam, President Donald Trump has said the US will no longer tolerate “chronic trade abuses”.

The president said he would always put US interests first and APEC nations should “abide by fair reciprocal trade”.

In stark contrast, China’s Xi Jinping said globalization was irreversible and voiced support for multilateralism.

Donald Trump has visited China and Japan as part of his five-nation Asia tour.

APEC brings together 21 economies from the Pacific region – the equivalent of about 60% of the world’s GDP.

Since taking office, President Trump has pursued his “America First” agenda and pulled the US out of the regional Trans-Pacific Partnership – a major trade deal with 12 APEC nations – arguing it would hurt US economic interests.

President Donald Trump Arrives in China amid North Korea Tensions

In a speech in the Vietnamese port city of Da Nang on November 10, President Trump railed against the World Trade Organization, which sets global trade laws, and said it “cannot function properly” if all members do not respect the rules.

Donald Trump complained about trade imbalances, saying the US had lowered market barriers and ended tariffs while other countries had not reciprocated.

“Such practices hurt many people in our country,” the president said, adding that free trade had cost millions of American jobs.

However, President Trump did not lay the blame on APEC countries, and instead accused earlier US administrations of not acting earlier to reverse the trend.

He said America would make bilateral agreements with “any Indo-Pacific partner here who abides by fair reciprocal trade”, but only “on a basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit”.

President Trump has repeatedly referred to the region as “Indo-Pacific”, a term used to define America’s new geopolitical view of Asia.

He had travelled to Da Nang from Beijing, where he had also discussed America’s huge trade imbalance with China.

After attending the APEC summit, President Trump will pay a state visit to the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.

The president will end his 12-day Asian tour in the Philippines on November 13.

Emmanuel Macron Makes Unscheduled Visit to Saudi Arabia amid Lebanon Crisis

France’s President Emmanuel Macron has made a surprise visit to Saudi Arabia amid an escalating crisis between the kingdom and Lebanon.

The president’s trip comes days after Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri resigned while in Riyadh, saying he feared for his life.

Meanwhile, foes Saudi Arabia and Iran have accused each other of fuelling instability in Lebanon and the wider region.

Emmanuel Macron and Saudi officials also discussed the crisis in Yemen, where Riyadh is leading a war against rebels.

France has historical ties with Lebanon, as its former colonial power before it gained independence during World War Two.

President Macron was in the UAE on November 9 to open the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a spin-off of the famous Paris art museum.

Ahead of his two-hour visit to Riyadh, Emmanuel Macron said all Lebanese officials should live freely, “which means having a very demanding stance on those who could threaten any leader”.

Lebanon: PM Saad al-Hariri Resigns Fearing for His Life

No details of the alleged plot against Saad al-Hariri have been made public.

Uncertainty surrounds Saad al-Hariri’s circumstances, amid rumors he was being held in Riyadh.

President Macron said on November 9 he had had informal contact with Saad al-Hariri, without giving details, while the French foreign minister said France believed Saad al-Hariri was able to move freely.

On November 5, Saad al-Hariri said in a TV broadcast that he was resigning because of the unspecified threat to his life.

In the video statement, Saad al-Hariri also attacked Hezbollah, which is politically and militarily powerful in Lebanon, and Iran.

There are fears Lebanon could become embroiled in a wider regional confrontation between major Sunni power Saudi Arabia and Shia-dominated Iran.

President Macron is a keen supporter of the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal, which both the Saudis and the Trump administration have heavily criticized.

Before going to Saudi Arabia, Emmanuel Macron said that he had heard “very harsh opinions” on Iran from Saudi Arabia, which did not match his own view.

“It is important to speak with everyone,” the president added.

However, an official communiqué from his office following the visit did not say Iran was among the matters discussed, Le Monde reported.

Tensions between Saudi Arabia, Iran and Lebanon have soared since Saad al-Hariri announced his resignation.

On November 9, Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies told their citizens in Lebanon to leave the country immediately. The move came after Saudi Arabia accused Iran of “direct military aggression”, saying it supplied a missile which it says was fired by Hezbollah at Riyadh from Yemen on November 5.

Iran has dismissed Saudi Arabia’s allegations as “false and dangerous”.

Louis CK’s Movie Premiere Canceled Following Harassment Accusations

Louis CK’s I Love You, Daddy premiere has been canceled hours before the screening as five women leveled inappropriate behavior allegations against the comedian.

The movie distributor said it was reviewing plans for its general release.

Four comediennes – Dana Min Goodman, Julia Wolov, Rebecca Corry and Abby Schachner – and a fifth woman who spoke on condition of anonymity made allegations about the entertainer in November 9 edition of New York Times.

Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov said Louis CK had an inappropriate behavior after inviting them to his hotel room during the Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado, in 2002.

Rebecca Corry told the newspaper that the comic was a guest star on a TV pilot she was appearing on in 2005 when he asked if he could go to her dressing room.

She said she rebuked him and pointed out that he had a daughter and a pregnant wife.

Abby Schachner has accused Louis CK of inappropriate behavior during a phone conversation in 2003.

“I felt very ashamed,” she told the New York Times.

A fifth woman, who did not want to be named, told the publication of alleged incidents involving Louis CK in the late 1990s while she was working in production on The Chris Rock Show.

I Love You, Daddy was written and directed by Louis CK, who also stars in the movie as a father who tries to stop his 17-year-old daughter (Chloe Grace Moretz) from having a relationship with a seedy 68-year-old film director (John Malkovich).

The movie’s distributor has not confirmed that it will go ahead with its release date in cinemas on November 17.

The Orchard has issued a statement to industry publications, saying: “In light of the allegations considering Louis CK references in today’s New York Times, we are cancelling tonight’s premiere of I Love You, Daddy.

“There is never a place for the behavior detailed in these allegations.

“As a result, we are giving careful consideration to the timing and release of the film and continuing to review the situation.”

Louis CK’s planned appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has also been canceled.

On November 9, HBO announced it would purge Louis CK’s past projects from its On Demand service.

HBO also said Louis CK would no longer participate in a charity comedy special, Night of Too Many Stars, later this month.

Two months ago, at the Toronto film festival, where I Love You, Daddy, was shown, the New York Times said it had asked Louis CK about claims of misconduct against him.

The divorced father of two daughters dismissed the reports as “rumors”.

Louis CK joins a growing list of Hollywood figures including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner and James Toback who have been engulfed by such allegations.

On November 9, a Los Angeles County district attorney Jackie Lacey announced a task force of prosecutors to address “the widespread allegations of abuse in entertainment industry”.

Steven Seagal Accused of Harassment by Portia de Rossi

Steven Seagal is accused of harassment by Ellen DeGeneres’ wife, Portia de Rossi.

Portia de Rossi, who is married to Ellen DeGeneres, made the allegation in a tweet posted on November 8.

The actress alleges that during a movie audition Steven Seagal told her “how important it was to have chemistry off-screen” before unzipping his trousers.

Steven Seagal, 65, is best known for his action roles during the 1980s and 1990s, including Under Siege and Flight of Fury. The star was given Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin in 2016.

Several other women have come forward to accuse Steven Seagal of inappropriate behavior and harassment, including the Good Wife actress Julianna Margulies and model Jenny McCarthy.

Steven Seagal is the latest person in Hollywood to stand accused of harassment or assault after women began coming forward about producer Harvey Weinstein.

Saudi Arabia $100 Billion Scandal: Over 200 People Detained in Anti-Corruption Purge

Saudi Arabia’s attorney general Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb says at least $100 billion has been misused through systemic corruption and embezzlement in recent decades.

He also said 201 people were being detained for questioning as part of a sweeping anti-corruption drive that began on Saturday night.

Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb did not name any of them, but they reportedly include senior princes, ministers and influential businessmen.

“The evidence for this wrongdoing is very strong,” he said.

The attorney general also stressed that normal commercial activity in the kingdom had not been affected by the crackdown, and that only personal bank accounts had been frozen.

He said investigations by the newly-formed supreme anti-corruption committee, which is headed by 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, were “progressing very quickly”.

All the Money in the World has also been withdrawn from the American Film Institute’s (AFI) annual festival in Los Angeles later this month.

Valentina Violo, who plays a secretary in Ridley Scott’s movie, said she had met Kevin Spacey at a party held at the end of shooting this summer.

Kevin Spacey’s career has nosedived since the first allegation of advances were made by actor Anthony Rapp on October 30.

Netflix has axed further production of Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards drama and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced it would no longer give the actor a special Emmy award, and his agent and publicist dropped him as a client.

Anthony Rapp accused Kevin Spacey of trying to seduce him when he was aged 14.

In response to Anthony Rapp’s claims, Kevin Spacey said he had no memory of the incident and offered an apology.

Since then several others have come forward accusing Kevin Spacey of predatory behavior, including Heather Unruh who said the actor had assaulted her 18-year-old son in 2016.

Kevin Spacey’s representatives say he is seeking unspecified treatment.

5 important steps to creating a profitable business

0

While thinking of a business idea is relatively easy, it takes skill, patience and determination to build a thriving company that can stand the test of time. Get one thing wrong and your dream could crash and burn, so with this in mind here are five important steps to creating a profitable business.

  1. Be organized and efficient

As an employee, most of the daily organizational tasks are thought of for you. You’re just a cog in the wheel. When you it go alone and head up your own business, however, it’s essential to be efficient from the start to avoid ending up in a confused mess down the line. There’s plenty to think about from purchasing assets to reporting employee wages and salaries, so it’s important to come up with a well thought out business plan and to implement it in a structured way.

  1. Understand your finances

If you don’t have a firm understanding of your finances from the word go, it will be hard to make a success of your business. As an entrepreneur, you must keep an eye on the numbers including: cash flow; net income; profit and loss; sales; price point (the price at which to sell a product/service in order to make a profit), gross margin and total inventory.

Looking over your figures once a year is simply not enough. Instead, you need to monitor price movements and financial-related issues on a regular basis.

  1. Build a trustworthy and talented team

Behind every successful company is a trustworthy and talented team. Employees with a lazy, negative or unenthusiastic attitude can be bad for business, so instead look for bright, talented and conscientious individuals who will bring a sense of urgency and innovation to their role. While the interview process is never easy, be sure to browse through resumes thoroughly – looking beyond the ‘too good to be true’ track record – and give potential employees a trial period to see if they are up to scratch.

  1. Have a high-speed internet connection

Whether your company is entirely internet based or has an online element, having a high-speed internet connection is important – especially if you rely on real-time data as in the trading industry. There is simply no time to sit and wait for pages to buffer when digital competition is fierce, so be sure to utilize the newest in connective technology. Not only will this allow for easier and faster collaboration with your business partners or clients, a seamless connection will also boost your reputation giving you a strong and reliable online presence.

  1. Track your progress

To create a profitable business, you must stay on the ball. Monitoring campaigns is of paramount importance and you can do this by setting Key Performance Indicators frequently referred to as KPIs. These are measurable values that demonstrate whether or not you are achieving your company objectives. If you want to improve brand awareness through social media, for instance, you may challenge yourself to get 1000 new followers on Facebook or Twitter over a set time.  You can then check to see if you are meeting this objective or if you need to rethink your strategy.

Running a business is far from easy but with a considerable amount of hard work, a talented team and a firm grasp of your figures, it is possible.

Alternative Medical Solutions: Not a New Concept, Simply a New Legislation

0

When people in ancient times used marijuana to alleviate pains and aches, they didn’t think of it as resorting to alternative medicine. It was all just medicine, solutions to their health problems. Legends tell of Chinese emperors making references to marijuana as a healing agent. The earliest written record of using cannabis as medicine is found in the Chinese Pharmacopeia, which came out in the 15th century BC.

Experts in various fields even believe that the Bible contains references to cannabis featuring among the ingredients of holy anointing oil. The ancient Egyptians and Indians used cannabis to treat glaucoma, inflammation, pain, and even leprosy. The Greeks and the Romans wrote extensively about the medicinal properties of the plant.

The change of heart

Until the turn of the 20th century, marijuana was a mainstream remedy used to treat various conditions. In the U.S., things began to change with the introduction of the Food and Drugs Act in 1906. All states had outlawed the sale and possession of marijuana by 1937, when the Marihuana Tax Act came into effect. The restrictions imposed by this law led to a sharp drop in marijuana prescriptions.

However, many scientists kept urging the study of cannabis to understand better its medical properties. As Dr. William Woodward of the American Medical Association (AMA) had argued in the 1930s, marijuana was “largely an unknown quantity, but might have important uses in medicine and psychology.”

The push for recognition

Research reports over the years maintained that marijuana was not as dangerous as previously thought and was actually less harmful than some other opiates and alcohol. One such report was commissioned by the UK government and published in 1968. You might want to know more about Cannabis Topicals and Cancer as well.

Evidence kept piling up that cannabis wasn’t a demonic plant and could, in fact, deliver substantial medical benefits. In 1970, a non-profit called National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) was launched in the U.S. Two years later, the bi-partisan Shafer Commission recommended that marijuana be decriminalized for personal use. That same year, NORML filed a petition to have the classification of marijuana changed from a Schedule I to a Schedule II drug.

Patients themselves began rallying to upset the status quo. In 1976, a federal judge ruled in favor of glaucoma patient called Robert Randall, who stood trial on criminal charges of cultivating marijuana. The ruling made Randall the first U.S. citizen cleared to receive marijuana as medicine. Five years later, he teamed up with other patients to establish the Alliance for Cannabis Therapeutics (ACT) – an organization dedicated to helping patients and doctors obtain access to this alternative medical solution.

The case for embracing change again

The collection of historical facts presented so far aims to make it clear that what people now call alternative medical care has always existed. Social, economic or political factors may have affected attitudes and legislation over the years, but at no point in time have patients and doctors stopped believing in the medical benefits of marijuana.

As technological and scientific progress drives humanity forward, new discoveries create tremendous opportunities but also raise the need for protection against abuse. Whatever people think about marijuana in general, very few doubt the medicinal properties of the plant.

While governments are relaxing their grip, it is still far from enough to advance research and approvals. Old, familiar concepts have become the source of confusion simply as a result of new terminology, classifications, and legislation. The modern definition of alternative medical care is so broad that it hinders understanding, regulation, licensing, and practice.

It seems the time has come for things to go full circle. Once a mainstream treatment, cannabis was pushed to the fringes of medicine and later criminalized. It is now staging a comeback, even if mostly regarded as an alternative to standard treatments. The medical marijuana community is hoping that one day, sooner rather than later, the law will catch up with science and cannabis will once again be regarded as a legitimate, fully endorsed solution for multiple medical problems. Just as it was centuries ago, when people didn’t care whether they were receiving traditional or alternative medical care as long as it helped them.

Barack Obama Dismissed from Serving on Chicago Jury Duty

Ex-President Barack Obama has turned up for jury duty at a Chicago courthouse, but was dismissed by the judge without being called on to serve.

Crowds thronged the Daley Center municipal building to catch a glimpse of the former president, who has a home in the Illinois city.

On November 8, Barack Obama left his home at 09:30 local time and returned at around midday.

Each potential juror receives a $17.20 cheque from the county.

News helicopters filmed from above as Barack Obama’s Secret Service motorcade moved from his home in the Kenwood neighborhood to an indoor car park downtown.

Wearing a jacket but no tie, the former president took a lift to the 17th floor, where he was met by other jurors as well as journalists, court staffers and lawyers.

After watching an “introduction to jury duty” video, Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans dismissed Barack Obama.

Later in the day, the former leader delivered a paid speech to investment firm GCM Grosvenor, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Barack Obama’s communications director Katie Hill said in a statement that the former Democratic president “believes the most important office in our democracy is that of citizen, and he considers jury duty a core obligation of citizenship”.

He had previously been summoned in 2010, during his first four-year term as president, but he managed to get a postponement from the court.

Barack Obama’s excuse at the time was that he had a previously scheduled meeting with the president of the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

In 2015, ex-President George W. Bush was called to jury duty in Dallas, Texas.

After posing for photos with other jurors, the former president was also dismissed.

In 2013, former President Bill Clinton was also dismissed from serving on a New York City jury hearing a gang shooting case.

White House Implements New Cuba Travel Restrictions

A series of measures increasing limits on Americans’ dealings with Cuba have been published by the White House.

The measures include a blacklist of state-owned companies and entities, including shops and hotels.

Most US citizens traveling to Cuba will now have to go as part of organized tour groups.

The measures come as part of a partial rollback of ex-President Barack Obama’s policy of engagement with Cuba, as announced by President Donald Trump in five months ago.

Officials have denied that any of these steps are related to the recent acoustic incidents, defined as “health attacks” by the state department against its officials in Havana.

Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin laid out the new rules, which will take effect on November 9.

“We have strengthened our Cuba policies to channel economic activity away from the Cuban military and to encourage the government to move toward greater political and economic freedom for the Cuban people,” he said in a statement.

According to the statement, the aim is to maintain “opportunities for Americans to engage in authorized travel to Cuba and support the private, small business sector in Cuba”.

The measures include a ban on dealings with 180 state-run and military-owned companies – the interior and armed forces ministries, 83 hotels, two travel agencies, and five holding companies involved with the organized tourism sector, 10 Havana boutiques and two rum distilleries.

Restrictions have also been placed on people-to-people exchanges, a travel category under which Americans can stay with families in Cuba.

From now on, these exchanges can only take place “under the auspices of an organization subject to US jurisdiction” and accompanied by a representative of that organization.

Kevin Spacey Scandal: Heather Unruh Speaks Out as New Allegations against Actor Emerge

More men and women allege Kevin Spacey groped or made advances toward them.

The claims, spanning from the mid-1980s to 2016, raise further questions about Kevin Spacey’s conduct in the decades he worked in Hollywood and as artistic director at London’s Old Vic theatre.

On November 8, the journalist whose October tweet triggered a series of accusations about Kevin Spacey spoke out.

Former TV news anchor Heather Unruh told a press conference in Boston that her son had been assaulted by Kevin Spacey, at the age of 18 in a bar in Nantucket, Massachusetts, in July 2016.

Heather Unruh said Kevin Spacey had bought her son alcohol – the drinking age in Massachusetts is 21.

She said the actor had invited her son to a party, but he had run away from the bar when Kevin Spacey had gone to the lavatory.

A criminal investigation was now under way, Heather Unruh said.

“Shame on you for what you did to my son. Your actions are criminal,” she said through her tears.

Kevin Spacey Facing New Allegations of Assault

Since the first allegation of advances were made by Anthony Rapp on October 30, Netflix suspended further production of House of Cards series, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced it will no longer give the actor a special Emmy award, and his agent and publicist dropped him as a client.

In response to Anthony Rapp’s claims, Kevin Spacey said he has no memory of the incident and offered an apology.

On November 3, UK police confirmed they were investigating an alleged assault on a man from 2008.

Meanwhile, Kevin Spacey said he was seeking treatment after facing the allegations but did not give information about the type.

Since then more men have come forward.

Barman Kris Nixon, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, said he had been working near the Old Vic in 2007 when Kevin Spacey groped him at a party.

Two weeks later, Kris Nixon was in the basement of the bar he had been working in, when, he said, he realized Kevin Spacey was two feet behind him.

President Donald Trump Arrives in China amid North Korea Tensions

President Donald Trump has landed in Beijing for a visit likely to focus heavily on trade and tensions with North Korea.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has prepared a lavish reception for President Trump.

Earlier, in a speech to the South Korean parliament, President Trump urged China to sever ties with North Korea.

President Trump is in China as part of a five-nation tour of Asia. He has also visited Japan so far.

Before his arrival, President Trump piled praise on President Xi, saying he was looking forward to meeting the Chinese leader after “his great political victory”.

Donald Trump Criticizes China Following North Korea’s Test of Long-Range Missile

Xi Jinping recently consolidated his power at a Chinese Communist Party congress, a move analysts say will make him less likely to reach compromise with President Trump.

Despite his congratulations, there are tensions between the two men, with President Trump having attacked China over its allegedly unfair trade practices.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania are scheduled to visit the Forbidden City, for centuries the home of China’s emperors, followed by afternoon tea.

The president’s arrival came just hours after his speech in the South Korean capital Seoul, in which he described North Korea as “a hell that no person deserves”.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons program has sparked international alarm, with Pyongyang carrying out its biggest nuclear test yet in September. In typically stark language, Donald Trump warned North Korea: “Do not underestimate us. Do not try us.”

However, there were hints though he might be open to a deal, telling North Korea “we will offer you a path for a better future”.

Singling out Russia and China, President Trump urged “all responsible nations” to isolate North Korea, and fully implement UN sanctions, downgrade diplomatic ties and sever trade and technology ties.

“You cannot support, you cannot supply, you cannot accept,” he said.

China is North Korea’s only major ally, but says it is committed to the UN sanctions and argues its leverage is overestimated.

Nissan Reduces Full-Year Profit Forecast Following Japan Recall

Nissan has cut its full-year profit forecast as a safety inspection scandal hit earnings.

Japan’s second-largest auto maker expects operating profit of 645 billion yen ($5.7 billion) for the year to March 2018, down from previous guidance of 685 billion yen.

Nissan also saw a sharp drop in operating profit for Q3 of 2017 owing to weakness in the US.

The company recalled 1.2 million cars in the domestic market in October after flaws in safety checks were discovered.

At a media briefing in Yokohama on November 7, Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa gave a long bow of apology and vowed to “regain the trust” in the wake of the scandal.

He said: “I would like to express my apologies to customers, business partners, dealers and all the people who have been supporting Nissan.”

Nissan to Acquire Controlling Stake in Rival Mitsubishi Motors

Toyota and Nissan Issue Massive Auto Recall over Takata Airbags

Nissan suspended local production for about three weeks after it revealed uncertified workers carried out final vehicle inspection checks for decades. On November 7, the company resumed production at all six of its domestic assembly plants.

The saga is the latest in a string of misconduct cases involving Japanese manufacturers, including a data falsification scandal at Kobe Steel.

In 2016, Mitsubishi Motors admitted that it had falsified fuel efficiency tests on some models.

While costs related to safety scandal are expected to hit Nissan’s annual profit, other headwinds weighed on its quarterly earnings.

Operating profit fell to 128.5 billion yen for the three months to September, down from 163.9 billion a year earlier.

The result, which missed market expectations, came as sales fell 2.2% in the increasingly competitive US market.

On November 7, Toyota – Japan’s largest auto maker – said its sales in North America hit their lowest level in nearly three years.

However, Nissan fared better closer to home. Sales rose 8% in China, the world’s biggest car market, and jumped 25.6% in Japan over the quarter.

Harvey Weinstein Used Ex-Israeli Agents to Spy His Accusers

According to a new report, Harvey Weinstein used ex-Israeli agents to spy on his accusers.

Italian actress and director Asia Argento has described the New Yorker report as “terrifying”.

Reporter Ronan Farrow has published a story claiming Harvey Weinstein used private investigators to try to cover up abuse claims.

Asia Argento has accused Harvey Weinstein of rape.

Harvey Weinstein’s spokesperson denied that “any individuals were targeted or suppressed at any time”.

In his New Yorker story, Ronan Farrow alleged that Harvey Weinstein employed two intelligence companies, Kroll and Black Cube, to try to collect information on several women and on journalists trying to expose the allegations.

Black Cube advertises itself as “a select group of veterans from the Israeli elite intelligence units”. The New Yorker said they included former members of Israeli spy agency Mossad.

After the story was published, Asia Argento tweeted: “Why didn’t I, @rosemcgowan, @RoArquette @AnnabellSciorra speak up earlier? We were followed by ex-Mossad agents. Isn’t that terrifying? Very.”

The Sopranos star Annabella Sciorra and Rose McGowan have also accused Harvey Weinstein of rape. He has denied all allegations of non-consensual contacts.

Ronan Farrow’s report alleges that two private investigators from Black Cube, using false identities, met Rose McGowan to “extract information” from her in an effort to stop the publication of abuse allegations. One of the investigators is reported to have posed as a women’s rights advocate.

Rose McGowan praised Ronan Farrow for his investigation, writing on Twitter that “your words will line the halls of justice”.

Annabella Sciorra told the New Yorker that the alleged use of private investigators by Harvey Weinstein had scared her “because I knew what it meant to be threatened by Harvey”, adding: “I was in fear of him finding me.”

The New Yorker also reported that one intelligence company held a profile of Rosanna Arquette, who has also accused Harvey Weinstein of harassment.

Harvey Weinstein’s spokeswoman Sallie Hofmeister dismissed the report, saying: “It is a fiction to suggest that any individuals were targeted or suppressed at any time.”

Saudi Arabia Accuses Iran of Direct Military Aggression over Yemen Missile

According to new reports, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of an act of “direct military aggression” by supplying missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen.

This “may be considered an act of war”, Saudi Arabia state media quoted the crown prince as telling UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson in a phone conversation.

On November 4, a ballistic missile was intercepted near Riyadh.

Iran has denied arming the Houthi movement, which is fighting a Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen’s government.

On November 6, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Saudi Arabia’s “wars of aggression” and “regional bullying” were threatening the Middle East.

Houthi-aligned media reported that the rebels had fired a Burkan H2 ballistic missile at King Khaled International Airport, which is about 530 miles from the Yemeni border and 7 miles north-east of Riyadh, on November 4.

Saudi media reported that missile defenses intercepted the missile in flight, but that some missile fragments fell inside the airport area. No casualties were reported.

Human Rights Watch said the launch of an indiscriminate missile at a predominantly civilian airport was an apparent war crime.

On November 7, the official Saudi Press Agency (SAP) reported that in his telephone call with Prince Mohammed, Boris Johnson had “expressed his condemnation of launching a ballistic missile by Houthi coup militias” and affirmed “Britain’s stand with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in confronting security threats”.

“For his part, the crown prince stressed that the involvement of the Iranian regime in supplying its Houthi militias with missiles is considered a direct military aggression by the Iranian regime and may be considered an act of war against the kingdom,” it added.

On November 6, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told CNN that Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement, an Iranian proxy, was also involved.

“It was an Iranian missile launched by Hezbollah from territory occupied by the Houthis in Yemen,” he said.

President Donald Trump Urges North Korea to Discuss Giving Up Nuclear Weapons

0

During his visit to South Korea, President Donald Trump has urged North Korea to “come to the table” and discuss giving up its nuclear weapons.

Striking a different tone from previous fiery rhetoric, the president said he “hoped to God” he did not have to use the US military against North Korea.

Donald Trump was speaking at a press conference with South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in in Seoul, as part of his tour of Asia.

The president has previously threatened “fire and fury” against North Korea.

Donald Trump is on a five-nation tour of Asia, where Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions have been high on his agenda.

At a press conference, Presidents Trump and Moon reiterated their call for Pyongyang to denuclearize, with Donald Trump saying it “makes sense for North Korea to come to the table”, and to “do the right thing, not only for North Korea but for humanity all over the world”.

The two leaders also called on China and Russia to put pressure on North Korea, and said they were lifting the limit on South Korean missile payloads, which they had agreed to do in September.

President Trump also said that South Korea would be ordering “billions of dollars” in military equipment from the US, which he said would reduce their trade deficit.

It was unclear if a deal was already struck, but Moon Jae-in said they had agreed to “begin consultations on acquisitions” that would enhance South Korea’s defense capabilities.

President Trump had earlier tweeted that “massive military and energy order” from Japan were also happening, and claimed on November 6 that Japan could shoot down North Korea’s missiles with US equipment.

Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe said earlier that he was considering it.

Though the President Trump will only spend about 24 hours in South Korea, it is perhaps the most symbolic stop in his Asian tour.

His visit is designed to bolster the military alliance that has long protected South Korea, and strength in unity is the message they want to send to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un just across the border.

However, the two presidents also have their differences. President Trump has previously accused Moon Jae-in’s government of trying to appease North Korea.

Donald Trump has also previously criticized the free trade agreement between the US and South Korea, and has made clear he wants to re-negotiate its terms.

During the press conference, President Trump said the deal had been “quite unsuccessful” for the US, and that the two countries were going to “pursue a much better deal”.

Protests against Donald Trump, as well as counter-rallies welcoming him, have been held in Seoul and elsewhere.

President Trump will be going to China, Vietnam and the Philippines in the coming week.
