Fed Increases Key Interest Rate by 0.25% In Spite of Warnings from President Trump

The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates again despite President Donald Trump’s opposition.

The Fed’s key interest rate has been increased by 0.25% to a target range of 2.25%-2.5%.

However, the Fed officials also said future increases could come at a slower pace amid concerns about global growth.

The move comes two days after President Trump warned the Fed against making “yet another mistake” in raising rates, urging it instead to “feel the market”.

The president also urged the bank not to wind down a multi-billion dollar stimulus program brought in after the financial crisis.

President Trump – who appointed the Fed’s chairman, Jerome Powell – has repeatedly blamed the central bank for unsettled markets and dismissed analysts who cite other factors, such as rising trade tariffs.

His remarks have put pressure on the Fed, as presidents generally avoid criticizing the bank publicly, for fear of politicizing the institution.

President Trump tweeted: “I hope the people over at the Fed will read today’s Wall Street Journal Editorial before they make yet another mistake. Also, don’t let the market become any more illiquid than it already is. Stop with the 50 B’s. Feel the market, don’t just go by meaningless numbers. Good luck!”

At a press conference on December 19, Jerome Powell defended the Fed’s independence, saying that political pressure played “no role whatsoever” in its discussions or decisions.

The Fed’s chairman added that the central bank had no plans to change its ongoing reduction of its portfolio of Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities.

The central bank has been gradually raising the benchmark rate since 2015, moving the US away from the ultra-low rates put in place during the financial crisis to spur economic activity.

The decision, which was widely expected, marked the ninth increase since 2015 and the fourth this year.

However, the moves have made borrowing more expensive, contributing to slowdowns in some sectors, such as housing.

With economic growth expected to slow, some worry that further increases risk stifling economic activity.

On December 19, officials did cut their forecasts for economic growth in 2019 to 2.3%, down from the 2.5% they anticipated in September.

Estimates released by the bank showed most Fed members expect two rate increases in 2019 – not three, as previously forecast.

It follows a downturn in financial markets and concerns about slowing growth in the US and abroad.

However, Jerome Powell said the strength of the US economy – which is expected to grow about 3% this year – justified another rate rise, despite recent “cross currents” that have weakened the outlook.

He said: “We think this move was appropriate for what is a very healthy economy.

“Policy at this point does not need to be accommodative.”

In its official statement, the Fed also said increases to its benchmark rate would help the US economy sustain its expansion, keeping the unemployment rate low and inflation near 2%.

Shares sank after the announcement, reversing earlier gains. The Dow and S&P 500 closed about 1.5% lower, while the NASDAQ fell than 2%.

US Withdraws Ground Troops from Syria

US troops are being withdrawn from Syria, after President Donald Trump said the ISIS group had been “defeated”, the Trump administration has announced.

However, the Pentagon said it was transitioning to the “next phase of the campaign” but did not give details.

Some 2,000 troops have helped rid much of north-eastern Syria of ISIS, but pockets of fighters remain.

It had been thought defense officials wanted to maintain a US presence to ensure ISIS did not rebuild.

There are also fears a US withdrawal will cede influence in Syria and the wider region to Russia and Iran.

Both the Pentagon and the WhiteHouse statement said the US had started “returning United States troops home as we transition to the next phase of this campaign”.

The Pentagon said it would not provide further details of what that next phase is “for force protection and operational security reasons”.

The White House said the US and its allies stood “ready to re-engage at all levels to defend American interests whenever necessary, and we will continue to work together to deny radical Islamist terrorists territory, funding, support and any means of infiltrating our borders”.

Israel said it had been told the US had “other ways to have influence in the area” but would “study the timeline [of the withdrawal], how it will be done and of course the implications for us”.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on state-controlled Channel One TV that the US decision could result in “genuine, real prospects for a political settlement” in Syria.

Pulling troops out of Syria had long been promised by President Trump.

The state department abruptly canceled its daily briefing on December 19 after the withdrawal was announced.

One of President Trump’s supporters, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who sits on the armed services committee, called it a “huge Obama-like mistake”.

In a series of tweets, Lindsey Graham said ISIS was “not defeated”, and warned withdrawing US troops puts “our allies, the Kurds, atrisk”.

This week Turkey said it was preparing to launch an operation against a Kurdish militia in northern Syria, which has been an ally of the US in its fight against ISIS.

Amphibian Named After President Donald Trump

A newly discovered amphibian that buries its head in the sand has been named after President Donald Trump, apparently in response to his comments about climate change.

The Dermophis donaldtrumpi, which was discovered in Panama, was named by the head of a company that had bid $25,000 at auction for the privilege.

EnviroBuild said it wanted to raise awareness about climate change.

The company’s co-founder Aidan Bell in a statement: “[Dermophis donaldtrumpi] is particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change and is therefore in danger of becoming extinct as adirect result of its namesake’s climate policies.”

The small, blind, amphibian is a type of caecilian that primarily lives underground, and Aidan Bell drew an unflattering comparison between its behavior and President Trump’s.

He wrote: “Burrowing [his] head underground helps Donald Trump when avoiding scientific consensus on anthropomorphic climate change.”

The amphibian is not the first creature to be named after Donald Trump.

CBS’ former chairman and chief executive Les Moonves will not receive a $120 million severance package after an inquiry into alleged harassment and assault.

CBS said that Les Moonves misled the company over the allegations and failed to work with investigators, meaning ithad grounds to fire him.

Les Moonves stepped down in September following fresh claims he had harassed or assaulted six more women.

He said that the accusations made in The New Yorker magazine were untrue.

At the time of Les Moonves’departure as chairman and chief executive at CBS, where he had worked for 23 years, CBS said it had set $120 million aside as possible payment for him pending an investigation.

Actress and writer Illeana Douglas, known for her roles in the filmsGoodfellas and Cape Fear, was oneof the first women to speak publicly about an alleged assault by Les Moonves.

In the first of two articles The New Yorker published on Les Moonves, Illeana Douglas said: “What happened to me was a sexual assault, and then I was fired for not participating.”

The article also said there was a culture of harassment at CBS.

Following an investigation by external law firms, the company said they had concluded “that harassment and retaliation are not pervasive at CBS”.

“However, the investigators learned of past incidents of improper and unprofessional conduct, and concluded that the company’s historical policies, practices and structures have not reflected a high institutional priority on preventing harassment and retaliation.”

1MDB Scandal: Malaysia Files Criminal Charges Against Goldman Sachs and Two Employees

Malaysia has filed criminal charges against Goldman Sachs and two former bankers in connection with a corruption and money laundering investigation at the state-owned investment fund 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Goldman Sachs has been under scrutiny for its role in helping to raise funds for the 1MDB.

The US bank is being investigated in at least six countries.

Goldman Sachs called the charges “misdirected” and said it would “vigorously defend them”.

The bank added: “The firm continues to co-operate with all authorities investigating these matters.”

Malaysia filed the charges against Goldman Sachs and its former employees Tim Leissner and Roger Ng.

Tim Leissner served as Goldman’s South East Asia chairman, and left the bank in 2016. Roger Ng was a managing director at Goldman until his departure in May 2014.

Malaysia has also brought charges against former 1MDB employee Jasmine Loo and financier Jho Low.

Malaysia’s attorney general Tommy Thomas said in a statement: “The charges arise from the proceeds of three bonds issued by the subsidiaries of 1MDB, which were arranged and underwritten by Goldman Sachs.”

Last month, Tim Leissner, Roger Ngand and Jho Low were served with criminal charges in the US in relation to 1MDB.

Tim Leissner pleaded guilty in the US to conspiring to launder money and violating anti-bribery laws.

In that case, prosecutors said Tim Leissner and Roger Ng worked with Jho Low to bribe government officials to win 1MDB business for Goldman Sachs.

US authorities said billions of dollars were embezzled from the state fund to buy art, property, a private jet- and even to help finance the Wolf ofWall Street movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The scandal has prompted investigations around the world and played a role in the election defeat earlier this year of Malaysia’s former PM Najib Razak, who is accused of pocketing $700 million from the fund he set up.

Colin Kroll: Vine Co-Founder and HQ Trivia CEO Found Dead In His Manhattan Flat

Vine and HQ Trivia co-founder Colin Kroll has been found dead in his New York flat at the age of 34.

Colin Kroll was found by police after his girlfriend reportedly asked them to check on him.

An HQ spokesperson confirmed the death of the CEO “with deep sadness”.

HQ Trivia app, a live trivia game on mobiles, became hugely popular, although its appeal waned this year.

NYPD officers went to Colin Kroll’s flat in Manhattan to carry out a welfare check and found his body along with drugs paraphernalia nearby, TMZ reported in the initial media coverage of his death.

The company confirmed Colin Kroll’s age after police had initially said 35.

Alan Kroll, Colin’s father, told the NewYork Times: “He had so much talent and had accomplished so much at such a young age. It truly is a waste.”

Colin Kroll co-founded HQ Trivia with Rus Yusupov, who paid tribute on Twitter: “So sad to hear about thepassing of my friend and co-founder Colin Kroll. My thoughts & prayers goout to his loved ones. I will forever remember him for his kind soul and big heart. He made the world and internet a better place. Rest in peace, brother.”

HQ Trivia was launched in the US in 2017 and Colin Kroll was appointed CEO this September.

The free app live-streams quiz shows, with a pot of money – often thousands of dollars – available to split between winners.

The quiz show was guest-hosted by some big names, from Jimmy Kimmel to Bert from Sesame Street.

HQ’s popularity faded this year, dropping out of the App Store’s list of top 100 apps.

Colin Kroll was also a co-founder of Vine, a six-second video streaming service that was bought out by Twitter in 2012 for $30 million.

Vine announced in December 2016 that Twitter was discontinuing the mobile app.

Mick Mulvaney also describes Donald Trump’s then opponent, Hillary Clinton, as “just as bad”.

The White House has not responded.

Meanwhile, a 2016 Facebook post shows that Mick Mulvaney described Donald Trump as “not a very good person”, NBC reported.

Mick Mulvaney was responding to the release of a tape from 2005 in which Donald Trump made inappropriate comments about women.

He wrote in a post: “I think one thing we’ve learned about Donald Trump during this campaign is that he is not a very good person.

“What he said in the audiotape is disgusting and indefensible. My guess is that he has probably said even worse.”

However, he added: “I’ve decided that I don’t particularly like Donald Trump as a person. But I am still voting for him. And I am still asking other people to do the same. And there is one simple reason for that: Hillary Clinton.”

Cherif Chekatt: Strasbourg Christmas Market Gunman Shot Dead by Police

Cherif Chekatt, who attacked Strasbourg’s Christmas market on December 11, has been shot dead by police, France’s interior minister has announced.

A police unit came across Cherif Chekatt in a Strasbourg street and shot him after the suspect opened fire.

Three people have died following the shooting at the Christmas market and several more were seriously injured. Previous reports had said that four people had been killed in the attack.

Cherif Chekatt, 29, had a string of criminal convictions in France and Germany and had become a radical Islamist in jail.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said three members of the National Police saw a suspicious individual on rue du Lazaret, in the Neudorf area of Strasbourg at 21:00 local time.

The officers stopped the man, who turned round and fired on the police. Police fired back and “neutralized”the attacker, said Christoph Castaner, who later went to the scene.

Hundreds of French police and security forces had been searching for the gunman.

A large police operation had taken place in Neudorf earlier on December 13, but ended apparently without results.

Five people have been arrested in connection with the attack. They include Cherif Chekatt’s parents and two of his brothers.

Strasbourg mayor Roland Ries said that finding Cherif Chekatt meant the worried people of his city would now be able to return to a normal life.

On December 11, at about 20:00 local time, a man opened fire close to the famed Christmas market near Place Kléber, which attracts thousands of visitors.

France’s anti-terror prosecutor, Rémy Heitz, said the man had shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest”) as he opened fire.

The suspect was armed with a gun and a knife and escaped the area after commandeering a taxi, Rémy Heitz said.

As the attacker fled he came into contact with four soldiers, Rémy Heitz said, and began firing at them. The soldiers fired back, apparently hitting him in the arm.

The gunman boasted to the taxi driver that he had killed 10 people, and also said he had been injured during a firefight with soldiers.

Cherif Chakett ordered the taxi driver to drop him near the police station in Neudorf. When he got out of the vehicle, he fired at police officers before escaping.

Cherif Chekatt was born in Strasbourg and was already known to the security services.

The man was the subject of a “fiche S”, a watch list of people who represent a potential threat to national security.

Cherif Chekatt had 27 convictions for crimes including robbery spanning France, Germany and Switzerland, and had spent considerable time in prison as a result.

On December 11, in the morning, police were seeking him in connection with another case, but did not find him at home.

A search of his apartment in Neudorf revealed a grenade, a rifle, four knives – two of which were hunting knives – and ammunition.

The third victim is believed to be a Thai tourist who was on holiday with his wife. Anupong Suebsamarn, 45, has been named by Thai media as one of the dead.

Michael Spavor is a businessman based in Dandong, near the Chinese border with North Korea. He has ties to the North Korean government and has met Kim Jong-un many times.

Ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig currently works for a think tank, the International Crisis Group (ICG), which has said it is concerned for his health and safety.

He is being held officially “on suspicion of engaging in activities that harm China’s state security”.

However, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Lu Kang, suggested another reason, saying the ICG had not been registered as a non-governmental organization (NGO) in China and therefore it was unlawful for its staff to work there.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland has said Michael Kovrig’s case was raised directly with Chinese officials.

Canadian foreign ministry spokesman Guillaume Bérubé confirmed that Michael Spavor had contacted them earlier in the week because “he was being asked questions by Chinese authorities”.

Two people have been killed and 11 others wounded in a shooting at the famed Christmas market in Strasbourg, France.

The gunman, who was identified by security services, is on the run and is being hunted by police. According to police, the suspect had been injured in an exchange of gunfire with a soldier.

The shooting happened in one of Strasbourg’s central squares, Place Kléber.

France’s counter terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation.

Confirming the death toll had risen to two, the French interior minister, Christophe Castaner, who is on his way to Strasbourg, called it a “seriouspublic security incident”.

Seven of the injured are said to be in a serious condition.

Police said the gunman was already known to the security services as a possible terrorist threat.

The European Parliament, which is close to the scene, is currently in lockdown. The parliament’s president, Antonio Tajani, tweeted to say it would”not be intimidated by terrorist or criminal attacks”.

The attack unfolded at around 20:00 local time close to the city’s famed Christmas market.

Emmanuel Foulon, a press officer for the European Parliament, wrote that there was “panic” in the center following the sound of gunfire andthat police with guns were running through the streets.

The memo says that although this crime was serious, any sentencing should be served concurrently with the NewYork prosecutors’ recommendations on other crimes.

Meng Wanzhou: Huawei CFO Arrested in Canada

Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the founder of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, has been arrested in Canada and faces extradition to the US.

The Huawei’s chief financial officer and deputy chair was arrested in Vancouver on December 1.

Details of the arrest have not been released but the US has been investigating the Chinese company over possible violation of sanctions against Iran.

China’s embassy in Canada protested at the arrest and demanded Meng Wanzhou’s release.

Huawei said it had little information about the charges and was “not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng”.

Meng Wanzhou’s arrest comes at a sensitive time for US-China relations. China and the US are engaged in a trade war that has seen both impose duties of billions of dollars on one another’s goods.

The arrest will not help the 90-day tariff truce the nations agreed after President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping met at the G20.

It also coincides with moves to restrict the use of Huawei technology in Western countries. The US, Australia and New Zealand have blocked the use of Huawei’s equipment in infrastructure for new faster 5G mobile networks.

Canada’s ministry of justice confirmed the date and place of Meng Wanzhou’s arrest and added: “She is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday.”

It said it could not say more as Meng Wanzhou had sought a ban on the publication of details and this had been ordered by the courts.

A spokesman for the DoJ in the Eastern District of New York – which Huawei said had brought the charges – declined to comment.

Huawei is under investigation for potential violations of US sanctions against Iran.

One report in the New York Times said the US commerce and treasury departments had subpoenaed Huawei over suspected violation of sanctions against both Iran and North Korea.

US lawmakers have repeatedly accused Huawei of being a threat to US national security, arguing that its technology could be used for spying by the Chinese government.

Huawei said Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of founder Ren Zhengfei, was detained while transferring between flights.

In a statement, the company said it had complied with “all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU.

“The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion.”

Huawei is one of the largest telecommunications equipment and services providers in the world, recently passing Apple to become the second-biggest smartphone maker after Samsung.

Some Western governments fear China will gain access to fifth-generation (5G) mobile and other communications networks through Huawei and expand its spying ability, although the company insists there is no government control.

The US has brought a number of legal cases against Chinese technology firms, with accusations such as cyber-security theft and violations of Iran sanctions.

Earlier this year, it barred US companies from exporting to ZTE, effectively shutting down the firm. The US later replaced the ban with a fine and governance changes.

World figures and all surviving US presidents have paid their respects to former President George H.W. Bush, during a state funeral in Washington.

Former President George W. Bush described his father as “a noble man, the best father”.

George Bush Sr., who served as the 41st US president between 1989 and 1993, died on November 30 at the age of 94.

He will be buried in his home state of Texas, alongside his wife Barbara.

In his eulogy, George Bush Jr. said his father had taught him that “public service is noble and necessary”.

The invitation-only funeral at the National Cathedral was attended by President Donald Trump and his predecessors Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

The Prince of Wales, former UK’s PM John Major,  German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Jordan’s King Abdullah II were among the world figures there to pay their respects.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush Dies Aged 92

December 5 has been declared a national day of mourning – many government offices and US stock exchanges are closed.

Following the funeral service, George H.W. Bush’s flag-draped casket was carried from the cathedral by a military honor guard and was later flown to Texas, arriving in Houston at 23:00 GMT.

The casket will lie in public repose at St Martin’s Episcopal Church until December 6.

There will be a second service before the Bush 4141 – a train which was named in honor of the president – takes his body to its final resting place, next to his wife Barbara at the George HW Bush presidential library.

Jim McGrath, who was George H.W. Bush’s spokesman, said the president had once wondered if anyone would attend his funeral.

George H.W. Bush was a decorated fighter pilot in World War Two, a head of the CIA and vice-president to Ronald Reagan before being elected president in 1988.

His time in office was dominated by foreign policy – and he was praised for how he navigated the end of the Cold War, and handled the first Gulf War.

However, he was accused of neglecting domestic affairs and, after reneging on a campaign promise not to increase taxes, lost to Bill Clinton in the 1992 presidential election.

George H.W. Bush has been described as a bipartisan figure who tried to make conservatism “kinder and gentler”.

Five Tips for Start Up Success

How does the free market differentiate start up companies that end up successful from those that fall flat?  It would seem that the base concept of the new company is where either the fault, or the success, lies.  But there’s more to start up achievement than that.  Of course, your product or service needs to solve a real problem, and/or meet real needs.

But lots of start up concepts do that and still fail.  Why?  Because leadership is more than just vision; it is the ability to inspire in others your desire to be the best and that starts by setting an example with your attitude, work ethic, and determination.

Your start up is going to succeed mostly by the triumph of your will over the other competitors in the marketplace that were there before your new start up came on the scene.  There’s only room for so many gladiators in the supply side arena and you need to battle and make sure that your company is still standing when the dust clears.

Here are some tips and tactics that can help you survive the early start up challenges long enough to establish your brand and thrive in the struggle for today’s expanding market share.

Tip #1: Put the Right Team in Place

This product or service may be your baby, but you’ll need help to get it out there, up and running.  You’ve got to surround yourself with experienced experts who understand your vision and fit into the culture and mindset of your company in order to achieve your ultimate goals.

And don’t assume you’ll be able to take your time assembling your team.  The good people, the ones that can drive your business as hard as you do, usually aren’t available for very long.  Make sure you’re quick on the hiring trigger when the right person’s CV floats across your desk.

Tip #2: Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

Once you get your product off the ground, particularly if it is innovative and popular straightaway, there are going to be copycats.  So, what do you do?  Try to sue everyone to prevent them from copying you?  Or do you immediately develop ancillary products that enhance your original so that you quickly have a whole line of items that are dependent upon and, thus, support each other.  Think iPhones and the proprietary peripherals that are only available from Apple.

Expanding your product line to prevent imitation is going to take experimentation in the real world and that means trial measures like producing working prototypes quickly and efficiently.  There are companies, like medical prototype manufacturing businesses or product design and development firms that specialize in this sort of on-the-fly, real-world development.  Many of these Research and Development outfits will work with your company on a contingency basis, especially if you can offer the developer a share in the manufacturing of that prototype when it eventually goes into production.

Tip #3: Find the Mentors You Need

As your business develops, you are going to want an advisory board to offer advice and guidance to help you navigate the entrepreneurial maze.  Don’t be embarrassed or anxious to solicit people to mentor you.

You’re going to be surprised by how many of the giants of the industry are glad to be asked to be on your board, and eager to help guide your new business, just like their own mentors once guided them.

Tip #4: Establish a Business Entity for Your Protection

Contracts and legal paperwork might not be very important to you during the early days of your startup, but operating a business without a business entity in place can put your idea in jeopardy and also your personal assets at risk.

Protect your concept legally and form an LLC so that you don’t risk legal problems later.  Talk to an attorney that specializes in creating start up businesses in order to set up your new company as a separate entity in and of itself.

Tip #5: Treat Your Ideas Carefully

One of the hardest parts of having a terrific new idea or concept is not talking about it to everyone you meet.  Practice keeping your ideas as close to the vest as possible and not talking about them to anyone who’ll listen.  Of course, eventually you will have to tell potential investors about your fantastic new concept in a very vigorous and forceful way.  That’s the only way to fundraise and grow the business.

But before you begin presenting your ideas in public, make sure you’ve consulted with an attorney who can help you with non-disclosure agreements and other legal tools that can protect your sensitive information.
