Disney develops 3D lights for toys

Disney is exploring the use of 3D printers to build new kinds of light features into objects.

The firm’s researchers are working on a range of techniques including “light pipes” and tubes of enclosed air that can be made to glow in controlled ways.

They say that 3D printers can create objects with “micron accuracy” that would otherwise be more complicated and costly to build.

It paves the way for the firm to create new kinds of toys.

However, one expert suggested it might be some time before the innovation became cheap enough to use to create mass produced items.

A paper published by the entertainment giant’s Pittsburgh labs details prototypes already created including a bug-like figure with glowing eyes that display different graphics; chess set pieces that use light to display information about their position on the board; and blocks of plastic that appear to show explosions inside when light is shone at them.

“We envision a future world where interactive devices can be printed rather than assembled,” wrote the team.

“A world where a device with active components is created as a single object, rather than a case enclosing circuit boards and individual assembled parts.”

The engineers used computer software to make objects which included innovative lighting elements. They explained that creating the toys on 3D printers allowed them to create a real-world prototype within minutes, rather than having to wait for a factory to be retooled.

The process used a liquid substance that hardened when exposed to ultraviolet light. The printer deposited and hardened this polymer layer by layer with a high degree of accuracy that equated to a print resolution of 600 dots per inch.

One application involved the creation of air pockets in the shape of thin hollow tubes of various lengths which were arranged to resemble the shape of a cartoon heart inside an animal-shaped figurine.

When illuminated from below using a light emitting-diode (LED) the tubes looked as if lots of tiny lights had been built into the toy and programmed to shine in sequence to resemble a beating heart.

Another example involved creating “light pipes” as a 3D-printed alternative to optical fibre.

The engineers said the pipes could be easily shaped to fit a toy’s specific form, with joints placed at specific places allowing them to be linked to other light pipes. They said this would have been much harder to achieve with traditional fibre.

The Disney team used a series of these pipes to funnel light up from the base of a toy demon into its eyes. Engineers could control which bits of the eyes were illuminated in a specific color, to make the toy appear as if it was rolling its eyeballs, blinking, or showing two small throbbing hearts.

The team also showed how a large number of light pipes could be used to form a kind of dot matrix display. By controlling which pipe received light at any one time they were able to make text and numbers glow through the sides of the bases of specially constructed chess pieces.

They suggested the technique could be used to show the pieces’ location and a suggested move during a game.

The researchers acknowledged they needed to do more work before the technology was ready for market. For instance the light pipes currently suffer from too much light loss unless they are kept short, and there were complications in creating completely enclosed hollow areas.

However, the researchers appeared confident that these setbacks could be overcome and added that future 3D printers should permit greater control over reflectivity, light absorption and other factors allowing toy designers to incorporate additional functionality.

But one industry watcher had doubts.

“The toy industry will always look to see if it can use technology to enhance the <<wow factor>>,” said John Baulch, editor of Toy World magazine.

“But the key thing is whether this can be used to make toys at a price that makes the end-product commercially viable.

“So far the small number of other companies that have developed 3D printing methods have found that the resulting products end up being expensive and have targeted them at adult collectors, rather than children, as a result.”

In the meantime some in the toy business see 3D printers as a potential threat, allowing users to download designs and create their own toys at home.

File-sharing site The Pirate Bay already hosts a limited number of 3D file blueprints and has claimed “physibles” would be the “next step in copying”.

Aspirin may slow brain decline in elderly women

0

A new research has find that an aspirin a day may slow brain decline in elderly women at high risk of cardiovascular disease.

Around 500 at risk women, between the ages of 70 to 92, were tracked for five years – their mental capacity was tested at the start and end of the study.

Those taking aspirin for the entire period saw their test scores fall much less than those who had not.

The Swedish study is reported in the journal BMJ Open.

Dr. Silke Kern, one of paper’s authors, said: “Unlike other countries – Sweden is unique, it is not routine to treat women at high risk of heart disease and stroke with aspirin. This meant we had a good group for comparison.”

The women were tested using a mini mental state exam (MMSE) – this tests intellectual capacity and includes orientation questions like, “what is today’s date?”, “where are we today?” and visual-spatial tests like drawing two interlinking pentagons.

But the report found that while aspirin may slow changes in cognitive ability in women at high risk of a heart attack or stroke, it made no difference to the rate at which the women developed dementia – which was also examined for by a neuropsychiatrist.

Dr. Silke Kern added: “We don’t know the long term risks of taking routine aspirin. For examples ulcers and serious bleeds may outweigh the benefits we have seen. More work is needed. We will be following up the women in this study again in five years.”

Denver Presidential Debate: Barack Obama and Mitt Romney clash over taxes, the deficit and healthcare

President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have clashed over their economic plans in the first of three televised debates.

In their Denver duel, the candidates contrasted their approach on taxes, the deficit and healthcare.

Barack Obama said he would ensure Americans were “playing by the same rules”. His rival said re-electing Barack Obama would continue a “middle-class squeeze”.

The president has held a narrow lead in recent opinion polls.

He went into the debate ahead in national polls and in many surveys in the swing states that will decide the election.

But he faced a confident opponent on the debate stage, with Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, sounding bullish throughout.

By contrast, the president at times appeared hesitant, occasionally asking moderator Jim Lehrer, of US public television network PBS, for time to finish his points.

Throughout the debate, each man attempted to paint his rival as a disaster for working American families.

They traded barbs on their economic plans, with Barack Obama describing his rival’s approach as “top-down economics” and a retread of Bush-era policies.

“If you think by closing [tax] loopholes and deductions for the well-to-do, somehow you will not end up picking up the tab, then Governor Romney’s plan may work for you,” he said.

“But I think math, common sense, and our history shows us that’s not a recipe for job growth.”

Mitt Romney derided Barack Obama’s policies as “trickle-down government”.

“The president has a view very similar to the one he had when he ran for office four years ago, that spending more, taxing more, regulating more – if you will, trickle-down government – would work,” Mitt Romney said.

“That’s not the right answer for America.”

Mitt Romney pledged not to reduce taxes for wealthy Americans, and said Barack Obama had misrepresented Romney’s tax plans on the campaign trail.

He hit out at the president for failing to cut the budget deficit in half as he pledged in 2008, and insisted that the US must not allow itself to go down the path of Greece or Spain.

Clashing repeatedly with Jim Lehrer over the time clock, Mitt Romney said that in order to reduce the $1.1tn US budget deficit he would repeal Barack Obama’s 2010 healthcare law and cut other unspecified programmes.

Barack Obama deflected criticism of his fiscal management, highlighting Mitt Romney’s pledge not to raise additional tax revenue. He said Mitt Romney’s approach to deficit reduction was “unbalanced” as a result.

“There has to be revenue in addition to cuts,” Barack Obama said.

On healthcare, Mitt Romney said that Barack Obama’s “Obamacare” reform law of 2010 had increased health costs and kept small businesses from hiring.

Even as he pledged to repeal Barack Obama’s health law, Mitt Romney praised and defended a plan he himself had previously signed as governor of Massachusetts that is widely hailed as the model for the Obama law.

Barack Obama, meanwhile, said his plan had kept insurance companies from denying coverage to sick people.

As the debate ended, each candidate’s allies rushed to talk up their man’s performance.

“The average person at home saw a president who you could trust,” Barack Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters.

“That’s what the American people are looking for.”

But senior Mitt Romney aide Eric Fehrnstrom said the president had spoken “only in platitudes”.

“If this was a boxing match, it would have been called an hour into the fight,” he added.

The University of Denver debate was the first in a series of three presidential forums and one vice-presidential encounter this month.

Running-mates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan will meet in Danville, Kentucky on 11 October, before the second presidential debate on 16 October.

Turkey: Syrian shells kill five people in Akcakale

Turkey has contacted the UN and NATO after Syrian shells killed five people in Turkish town Akcakale near the border between the two countries.

The shells exploded after being fired into Akcakale from Tall al-Abyad in Syria, where forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are trying to put down an 18-month-old insurgency.

The dead are said to include a woman and her three children.

Later, reports said Turkey had struck back at Syrian targets.

A statement from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkish forces had shelled targets along the border identified by radar, AFP news agency reported.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc was quoted as saying that Syria must be made to account for the incident and there must be a response under international law.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu contacted UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, the UN’s Syria peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen after the incident, his office said.

The minister cleared his schedule and chaired an emergency meeting at the foreign ministry, it added.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen told Turkey’s foreign minister that he strongly condemned the incident, a NATO spokeswoman said, and continued to follow developments in the region “closely and with great concern”.

He has repeatedly said that NATO has no intention of intervening in Syria but stands ready to defend Turkey if necessary.

Akcakale has been fired on several times over the past few weeks. Residents have been advised to stay away from the border, and more than 100 schools have been closed in the region because of the violence in neighboring Syria.

Turkey’s state-owned Anatolia news agency reported that angry townspeople had marched to the mayor’s office to protest about the deaths on Wednesday.

Town mayor Abdulhakim Ayhan said: “There is anger in our community against Syria,” adding that stray bullets and shells had panicked residents over the past 10 days.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said: “We are outraged that the Syrians have been shooting across their border… and regretful of the loss of life on the Turkish side.”

She added it was a “very dangerous” situation.

Although Turkish territory has been hit by fire from Syria on several occasions since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began, Wednesday’s attack is believed to be only the second time that people have died as a result.

Two Syrian nationals were killed on Turkish soil in April by stray bullets fired from Syria.

In Syria itself, at least 34 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a series of bomb explosions in the centre of Syria’s second city, Aleppo.

The attacks leveled buildings in the city’s main square. A military officers’ club and a hotel being used by the military bore the brunt of the blasts, some of which were carried out by suicide car bombers.

Kim Kardashian gained 20 lbs since dating Kanye West

Kim Kardashian says that she is serious about slimming down since gaining a reported 15-20 pounds during her relationship with Kanye West.

And in a concerted effort to shift the weight, Kim Kardashian slipped on a pair of geeky black-rimmed reading glasses to work-out on the beach on Wednesday.

However, her more conservative and smarter style failed to distract from her sexy curves as she did some strenuous lunges on the sand.

Kim Kardashian, 31, displayed plenty of cleavage in a black sheer tank top, which she paired with tight leggings, that in turn highlighted her famous derriere.

She has admitted that she has put on weight, and tells Life & Style she’s determined to get back into shape after letting herself go since dating beau West.

“I’m hoping to slim down a little bit, and I’m not afraid to say it,” she tells the magazine in their latest issue.

“I think everyone goes up and down in whatever that comfortable love relationship phase is where you like to eat out, but now it’s time to get it together again.”

Friends of Kim Kardashian tell the magazine that she has gained several pounds since the duo started dating earlier this year.

“She’s gained 15 to 20 pounds. All Kim and Kanye ever do is go out to eat,” a friend tells the magazine.

“She feels so comfortable around him – he loves her curves – she hasn’t been vigilant about dieting.”

Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian says that she has also started taking QuickTrim again – the diet supplement for which she and her sisters are the face of.

“I’ve started [diet supplement] QuickTrim again,” she says.

“When I start that, it’s full focus.”

On Wednesday during her work-out, Kim Kardashian was also joined by her sister Kourtney and their Real Housewives Of Miami pal, Larsa Pippen.

The trio was seen going for a jog – the exercise session recorded by a film crew for the sister’s new reality show.

Tying her hair back in a ponytail and toning down her usual full-force of make-up, Kim Kardashian slipped her spectacles on and off during the workout.

The glasses, from the sister’s own eyewear line, boasted dark and almost squared frames, which also gave the star a look reminiscent of the well-known sexy secretary style.

Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian displayed her post-pregnancy figure in some black leggings paired with a yellow sports bra worn underneath a sheer blue T-shirt.

The combination revealed her flat tummy, obtained just under three months since welcoming her daughter Penelope Scotland into the world on July 8.

Kourtney Kardashian wore her hair in a similar style to her sister’s and opted to shield her eyes with some sunglasses.

Forbes’ highest-paid women in 2012: Oprah Winfrey crowned as the highest female earner in Hollywood

Oprah Winfrey has been crowned the highest female earner in Hollywood by Forbes magazine, having taken home an estimated $165 million last year.

Britney Spears is next, with earnings thought to be about $58 milion.

Taylor Swift completes the top three, only just behind Britney Spears, making $57 million in the past 12 months.

According to Forbes, Oprah Winfrey is America’s only African-American billionaire and owns the television company, Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

She is also a television presenter and recently interviewed Rihanna about her relationship with Chris Brown.

Britney Spears did not make the Forbes list last year, possibly down to a reduction in the amount of her touring.

This year the pop star has performed 75 dates as well as earning money from various endorsements and her perfume line.

She has also taken a role on the judging line-up of The X Factor USA.

Taylor Swift’s place is partly down to her tour, which grossed more than $1 million per night and ran for more than 65 dates.

Other names on the list include television host Ellen DeGeneres and singers Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

Forbes’ highest-paid women in 2012:

1 – Oprah Winfrey, $165 million

2 – Britney Spears, $58 million

3 – Taylor Swift, $57 million

4 – Ellen DeGeneres, $53 million

5 – Rihanna, $53 million

6 – Lady Gaga, $52 million

7 – Jennifer Lopez, $52 million

8 – Gisele Bundchen, $45 million

9 – Katy Perry, $45 million

10 – Judge Judy Sheindlin, $45 million

How Jennie Garth lost 30 lbs after splitting with Peter Facinelli

Following her March split with Peter Facinelli after 17 years of marriage, Jennie Garth cut a noticeably slimmer figure.

Now Jennie Garth has revealed the full extent of her weight loss.

Jennie Garth, 40, says that she has lost a staggering “30lbs of dead weight” from her frame.

In a new interview with People magazine, Jennie Garth says her body transformation came when she realized she had became a shadow of her former self.

The actress explains that her union with Peter Facinelli was suffering long before they announced their break-up in March, and it was deeply affecting her appearance.

“I spent a couple of years lying in bed being depressed,” she tells the magazine.

“It was that <<I can’t breathe>> pain.

“Physically I didn’t look my best, and mentally I didn’t feel my best. I was doing everything I could to be a good mom, but that was all I could handle.”

Jennie Garth says she was finally motivated to do something about it when she saw a home video of herself.

“We were dancing to Wii and I didn’t know I was being filmed by my nephew,” she explains.

The actress says she was “stunned” by the “depressed person” she saw on camera.

“I didn’t even know that person. I’m such a different person now.”

Following the end of her marriage, the actress hid herself away on her Californian ranch in Santa Ynez, with her three girls Luca, 14, Lola, nine, and Fiona, five.

But after celebrating her 40th birthday, Jennie Garth realized that she could no longer be a hermit.

“I just looked at it like there’s no way I can hide out in the country and never work again, never love again and never laugh again,” she says.

It was then that Jennie Garth, famous for her role as Kelly Taylor on the hit Nineties TV series Beverly Hills 90210, moved back to Los Angeles and got busy.

With the help of a personal trainer and a healthy diet, Jennie Garth dropped 30 lbs.

She credit her weight loss to a combination of eating smaller portions, consisting of a diet of Greek yoghurt, salads, salmon and coconut water, and an exercise regime of lightweight gym training twice a week, hiking and personal training sessions.

And she says that she didn’t push herself, gently losing 1-2 lbs a week over the course of six months.

Staying focused, Jennie Garth also tried not to think about the emotional things going on in her life.

“Sitting around on the couch eating Pringles all day is not going to help anyone,” she laughs.

While she is enjoying her new life and “not pining” for Peter Facinelli, she admits that her heart still sinks when she sees happy couples and families out and about.

“I go out, and I see happy families – and men and women out on dates – and there’s a part of me that’s like, <<Ouch!>> But you have to pick yourself up and say <<Let’s go!>>” she says.

The actress has recently just plunged back into the dating pool, and despite being spotted out on a date with handsome photographer Noah Abrams, she reveals that she is still single.

She admits that the whole dating game is nerve-racking.

“Sometimes it feels awkward, and sometimes it feels really natural. I just want to love and be loved,” she explains.

Jennie Garth just recently wrapped The Eleventh Hour, a Lifetime movie adaptation of CNN correspondent Nancy Grace’s novel.

Iran clashes over rial crisis

Iranian riot police have clashed with protesters in Tehran over sharp falls in the currency, the rial.

Tear gas was used to disperse the demonstrators, some of whom were setting fire to tyres and rubbish bins. There were many arrests, reports say.

Eyewitnesses said scores of people gathered outside the central bank, calling for the governor to stand down, chanting anti-government slogans.

The rial has plummeted to record lows against the US dollar in recent days.

Money dealers were joined by traders from the nearby central bazaar, reports say.

Amateur video footage posted online appeared to show hundreds of people marching towards Iran’s central bank.

Eyewitnesses said riot police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Reports say many shops in the central Grand Bazaar have brought down their shutters in sympathy with the demonstrators.

Traders are angry at the lack of direction from the government in the crisis, which they say has led to more instability in prices and made trading almost impossible, according to commentators.

Authorities began jamming the channel’s signals on two satellites after the London-based Persian-language channel reported the Tehran protests.

The head of Tehran’s bazaar unions, Ahmad Karimi-Esfahani, said shopkeepers had not opened their businesses as they were “worried about security” but he expected them to reopen on Thursday.

A protest outside the bazaar started with a small group and then grew, he told the Iranian Labour News Agency (Ilna).

One eyewitness, who gave his name only as Omid, said the Sabze Maydon area within the bazaar was closed down and some shop windows were smashed.

He said the government had closed the currency exchange shops, hoping to curtail the turmoil.

A senior Iranian police commander confirmed to Ilna that “a limited number of people protested in front of the bazaar,” but he said the bazaar was not closed.

Hundreds of police are also reported to have rounded up and arrested illegal money changers in the capital.

Tehran’s bazaar is traditionally the biggest financial ally of the Iranian regime. The bazaar is said to have bankrolled the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The political core of the bazaar is the Islamic Allied Society or Motalefeh, a political group loyal to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The protests were clearly targeting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government, accusing it of mismanagement and inefficiency in curtailing Iran’s currency crisis.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has blamed Western sanctions for the fall in the rial, saying they amounted to an economic war.

However, many Iranians accuse him of financial mismanagement.

US officials say the slide reflects the success of US economic sanctions targeted at Iran’s controversial nuclear programme.

Meanwhile, Ayatollah Khamenei said in a speech that the Iranian people would never submit to pressure from abroad.

Iran would put this crisis behind it, he was quoted by Iranian news agencies as saying.

Valerie Trierweiler regrets tweet against Segolene Royal

France’s first lady Valerie Trierweiler has admitted she made a mistake sending tweets aimed against President Francois Hollande’s former partner.

Valerie Trierweiler caused controversy when she used Twitter to publicly back an opponent of Segolene Royal in parliamentary elections in June.

Segolene Royal, the Socialist presidential candidate in 2007, is the mother of Francois Hollande’s four children.

Valerie Trierweiler told a French newspaper she regretted the move.

“It was a mistake that I regret. I must have been clumsy because this was badly interpreted,” Valerie Trierweiler told regional newspaper Ouest-France.

“I had not yet realized that I was no longer a simple citizen. It won’t happen again.”

Government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem welcomed the remarks.

“It is entirely to her credit that Valerie Trierweiler has taken the time to express her regrets,” she said according to French news agency AFP.

During the elections, Valerie Trierweiler tweeted support for Segolene Royal’s opponent, dissident socialist politician Olivier Falorni. Her actions embarrassed Francois Hollande, who had only recently been elected president.

The president had given his public support to his former partner Segolene Royal, who subsequently lost the election to Olivier Falorni.

He recently told journalist that he and the first lady agreed on everything except her tweets.

There has long been speculation of the intense rivalry between the two women.

Segolene Royal is a former leader of the Socialist Party who ran for president in 2007 but was defeated by conservative Nicolas Sarkozy. Valerie Trierweiler is a former political journalist.

In the interview with Ouest-France, she said she planned to continue working at Paris-Match – the weekly magazine where she writes an arts column. – but would abandon plans for a more high-profile television presenting role.

“I understand that being the president’s partner and working for a television channel may be problematic or even fuel suspicion for some people,” she said.

Denver Presidential Debate: Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney on domestic policy issues

President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney are making final preparations for the first of three crucial presidential debates.

With just 34 days to go until election day, Wednesday’s Denver debate will focus on domestic policy issues.

Mitt Romney has long criticized the president for his economic record, but is likely to face questions over his own tax plans and immigration policy.

Barack Obama has opened up a narrow lead in the race over the past month.

He leads Mitt Romney in national polls and in many recent polls conducted in the swing states that will decide the election.

The latest national survey, released on Tuesday by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, shows Barack Obama leading, but by just 49% to 46%.

Mitt Romney has struggled in the polls since a secretly filmed recording emerged of him telling a private fundraising event that the 47% of Americans who did not pay income tax viewed themselves as “victims” and were dependent on government help.

Wednesday’s debate at the University of Denver will be the first time voters across the US have had the chance to see Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on stage together.

Both men have already been on the campaign trail for months, and used their prime-time speaking slots at the recent party conventions to make their case to voters.

An even bigger audience is expected for this first debate: the opening head-to-head of the 2008 election attracted more than 50 million TV viewers across the US.

The candidates’ body language will be heavily scrutinized, as will their tone of voice and how they handle themselves under pressure. Media pundits and campaign spin doctors will attempt to seize on any gaffe or mis-statement in an effort to claim victory.

Both campaigns have been playing down their man’s prospects in the run-up to the debate, with Barack Obama praising his opponent’s debating skills and Mitt Romney’s running mate Paul Ryan insisting that one debate alone will not change the campaign.

Nevertheless, both candidates’ messages are well-honed, and their sharp words for each other are familiar to millions of swing-state voters who have faced a onslaught of mostly negative TV advertisements in recent months.

Mitt Romney’s campaign is based around his belief that Barack Obama’s stewardship of the US economy has been a dismal failure. He points to an enduringly high unemployment rate (currently 8.1%) and poor job growth, and says his experience in business will turn the US economy around.

Barack Obama, by contrast, says his opponent offers little except a rehashing of the “failed” Republican policies that caused the economic crash of 2008.

The president proposes tax rises for the wealthiest Americans to help reduce the federal budget deficit, and says his opponent’s plans would hurt the middle class.

But critics say neither man has fully fleshed out his economic policies, and doubts remains about how either Republican or Democrat will tackle the $15 trillion US deficit.

The two candidates have been largely absent from the campaign trail in recent days, shutting themselves away with aides for hours of rigorous preparation and practice.

Mitt Romney, who is known for his meticulous approach to debates, arrived in Denver on Monday and has been using Ohio Senator Rob Portman to play the role of Barack Obama.

The president, meanwhile, has been preparing in Las Vegas, Nevada, with 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry reportedly playing Mitt Romney.

With the principals waiting in the wings, Tuesday saw vice-presidential candidates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan take centre stage.

Joe Biden stole the headlines, telling a campaign rally in North Carolina that the US middle class had been “buried” for four years. The remark was seized on gleefully by the Romney campaign.

“Of course the middle class has been buried,” Paul Ryan said in Iowa later on.

“They’re being buried by the Obama administration’s economic failures.”

Nicki Minaj foul mouth rant at Mariah Carey during American Idol audition

Nicki Minaj is said to have threatened Mariah Carey after her American Idol co-star called her a “b****” – it is now being claimed.

Show bosses cancelled filming in Charlotte, North Carolina for the day on Tuesday after a huge blow up between the pair where Nicki Minaj allegedly threatened and swore at Mariah Carey.

But witnesses insist Mariah Carey started it, according to reports.

A source told Mouthtoears.com: “Nicki Minaj walked off of set because Mariah Carey kept making jabs at her.

“Nicki’s manager and team convinced her to come back to the show. Mariah kept at it and called Nicki <<a b****>> and then proceeded to cuss her out. Producers had to stop filming and call it a night.”

It was previously reported how Nicki Minaj fumed she was sick of her co-judge, labelling Mariah Carey her “f*****g highness”.

Their fellow panelists Keith Urban and Randy Jackson were caught in the middle of the row, according to TMZ, which is running a video of the row, where Nicki Minaj can be heard ranting at Mariah Carey.

A source told the website: “[Nicki said to Mariah] <<I’m gonna knock you out>> – although this was not caught on tape.”

In the video being run by TMZ, Nicki Minaj can be heard saying: “I told them I’m not f*****g putting up with her f*****g highness over there [Referring to Mariah]. Figure it the f*** out. Figure it out.”

Mariah Carey can also be heard answering back in the video – but it is difficult to make out exactly what she is saying.

The row is said to have started due to a disagreement over a contestant’s performance.

As he headed to bed on Tuesday night, host Ryan Seacrest wrote on Twitter: “Going to bed in Charlotte after an anything but dull day at #idol auditions. Hit u in morn.”

Producers are now said to be concerned about how the pair will manage to work together for the rest of the season, TMZ reports.

Mariah Carey was said to be unhappy with Nicki Minaj joining American Idol because she was worried it would turn the reality TV programme into a “freak show”.

A source previously told Hollywoodlife: “Nicki isn’t established enough to qualify as a judge.

“Mariah wants a panel of bright, inspirational and constructive judges. Not some freak show!

“Mariah thinks Nicki will just be a distraction and it will all be about her and her outrageous behavior. Mariah will not be happy if Nicki joins the panel and she has let the producers know just how she feels!”

While Mariah Carey has 22 years experience in the industry, relative newcomer Nicki Minaj only leaped to fame two years ago.

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have apparently not been getting along since auditions first started in New York last month.

During their first taping of the talent reality show the pair were said to have talked over one other in a bid to be the most vocal judge.

The drama began when 29-year-old Super Bass singer Nicki Minaj starting critiquing a contestant, but despite it being her moment to reign, Mariah Carey, 42, couldn’t resist butting in on several occasions.

But according to TMZ, each time the Dreamlover star intervened, feisty Nicki Minaj just spoke louder.

A source said at the time: “These girls just don’t like each other.”

Following the first day of shenanigans in New York, a fan tweeted Nicki Minaj to ask how the judging had gone, to which she cryptically responded: “It was… interesting… “

Lady Gaga totes machine gun on Milan stage

Lady Gaga showed off a machine gun at her audience as she performed in Milan as part of her Born This Way tour on Tuesday night.

Emerging from a stone castle, Lady Gaga, 26, looked positively angelic in a flowing white gown, matching fur coat and a trademark quirky headpiece as she held a giant machine gun in her hands.

And that wasn’t the only gun reference of the evening, with Lady Gaga later showing off her curves in a black bra let with weapons strapped to the front.

As usual, Lady Gaga was out to shock with her spectacular showcase, and made sure to flash the flesh in a series of revealing outfits as she took to the stage in Italy.

In addition to her skimpy ensembles, she added a host of weird and wonderful outfits to her collection, including a giant statue of liberty headpiece.

Meanwhile, in another set, Mother Monster channeled her inner rock chick, taking to the stage in leathers on a fierce motorbike.

And once again, the carnivorous theme was back in force, with Lady Gaga taking her obsession to a new extreme by reclining back on a sofa made entirely of meat while surrounded by her troupe of dancers.

The star later ripped off her outer clothing to delight crowds with her controversial meat dress once again as giant lions hung in the background of the stage.

But it would seem being in Italy has made Lady Gaga somewhat homesick for her New York-based Italian father, Joe Germanotta.

Writing on her Twitter page, she said: “little italian girls all grown up, living the life. @germanottajoe be home soon daddy for spaghetti.”

And it wasn’t just her family the star was longing for as she continues travelling the world on her epic 113-date tour.

Lady Gaga also confessed she was missing her boyfriend, actor Taylor Kinney, whose new show Chicago Fire previewed in the US on Tuesday night.

She tweeted: “Miss T so much, so excited his show CHICAGO FIRE has their premiere 2nite. Congratulations Dick Wolf and the whole cast! Sending my love!”

Marcello Di Finizio scales St Peter’s Basilica in anti-EU protest

Marcello Di Finizio has scaled the dome of St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, in an apparent protest against EU measures he alleges penalize small businesses.

He is standing on one of the many ornate window ledges of the dome.

A large fabric banner hangs beneath him reading, “Help! Enough Monti. Enough Europe. Enough multinationals!”

Marcello Di Finizio, a beach bar owner, staged a similar protest in July against an EU directive that will see parts of the seafront auctioned off.

Firefighters have been pacing a walkway which circles the cupola on the top of the dome.

On the square below, Pope Benedict XVI held a service on Wednesday morning.

Marcello Di Finizio started to scale the dome, an iconic feature of one of Catholicism’s most revered churches, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to one of his friends, he is angry about an EU directive, backed by the Italian government, which will reform rules for auctioning licenses to operate patches of Italy’s seafront. He argues the measure will favor big multinationals.

A telephone call to Italian ministers on Tuesday failed to persuade him to climb down.

Marcello Di Finizio rents out parasols and sun loungers to sun bathers.

In August beach operators protested against the measures by keeping parasols closed along large stretches on Italy’s coastline.

The operators have said the new rules threaten the jobs of some 600,000 resort workers.

The directive is due to come into effect in Italy from 2016.

Barack Obama 2007 race remarks on Katrina aftermath response

A tape has emerged on the eve of the presidential debate of President Barack Obama making controversial “race” remarks about the government’s response in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Speaking to an audience of predominantly black ministers at Hampton University in 2007, Barack Obama said that the response to Katrina was lacklustre because “the people down in New Orleans, they don’t care about them as much”.

Critics say the tape is an example of the President trying to whip up “fear and hatred” but supporters of Barack Obama said the speech has already been widely reported and dismissed the release as an attempt to deflect attention away from Mitt Romney ahead of tonight’s crucial debate in Denver, Colorado.

The speech had previously been aired but only an edited video was released and a transcript that did not include the ad-lib remarks about New Orleans.

Barack Obama said: “Down in New Orleans, where they still have not rebuilt 20 months later. There’s a law, federal law – when you get reconstruction money from the federal government – called the Stafford Act.

“And basically it says, when you get federal money, you have to give a 10 per cent match. The local government has to come up with ten per cent. Every $10 the federal government comes up with, local government has to give a dollar.”

He continued: “Now here’s the thing. When 9/11 happened in New York City, they waived the Stafford Act – said: <<This is too serious a problem. We can’t expect New York City to rebuild on its own. Forget that dollar you have to put in. Well, here’s $10.>>

“And that was the right thing to do. When Hurricane Andrew struck in Florida, people said: <<Look at this devastation. We don’t expect you to come up with your own money here. Here’s the money to rebuild. We’re not going to wait for you to scratch it together, because you’re part of the American family>>.

“What’s happening down in New Orleans? – <<Where’s your dollar? Where’s your Stafford Act money?>>

“It tells me that somehow the people down in New Orleans, they don’t care about as much.”

The recording of Barack Obama also reveals him giving a “special shout out” to controversial pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright who was in the audience.

In the footage, Barack Obama introduces Reverend Jeremiah Wright as “my pastor, the guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me”.

“He’s a friend and a great leader. Not just in Chicago, but all across the country.”

Barack Obama’s speech in June 2007 came a year before Jeremiah Wright’s infamous “God damn America” remarks surfaced in 2008.

Referring to treatment of African-Americans in the U.S, Rev. Jeremiah Wright said in a sermon in 2003: “No, no, no, not God Bless America.

“God damn America….God damn America, for treating our citizens as less than human.”

The retired pastor also came under fire after he said the September 11 terrorist attacks were “America’s chickens coming home to roost”. He was kept at a distance by Barack Obama during the 2008 campaign.

Right and left-wing media were divided over the impact of the tape. The Daily Caller, which broke the story, erupted over Barack Obama’s remarks, describing them as “racially-charged”.

The conservative blog added that the “at times angry speech undermines Obama’s carefully-crafted image as a leader eager to build bridges between ethnic groups”.

It also compared the President with radical civil rights activist Al Sharpton. The site’s editor Tucker Carlson told Fox that the clips were Barack Obama “whipping up race hatred and fear. Period”.

The liberal media played down the Obama tape as old news.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow heaped sarcasm on the clip, saying: “This is how he snuck into the White House, right? People didn’t actually know he was this black, and if they had known, they never would have elected him.”

Sam Feist, Washington Bureau Chief at CNN, tweeted: “Re: Secret tape of the Obama event: CNN covered it in 2007. It was open press.”

Both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have stepped back from the campaign trail in recent days as they prepare ahead of their first head-to-head meeting on stage on Wednesday night.

The Republican National Committee has stayed quiet over the release of the tape while Mitt Romney’s camp has denied involvement.

The Obama campaign said the release of the clips were a “transparent attempt” by Mitt Romney’s allies to divert from a secretly-recorded tape where the Republican nominee told a fundraiser that “there are 47% who are with him [President Obama], who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims”.

Campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said: “The only thing shocking about this is that they apparently think it’s wrong to suggest that we should help returning veterans, children leaving foster care and other members of Mitt Romney’s 47% get training that will allow them to find the best available jobs.

“If the Romney campaign believes that Americans will accept these desperate attacks tomorrow night in place of specific plans for the middle-class, it’s they who are in for a surprise.”

Sriprakash Jaiswal apologizes for sexist remark at a poetry meeting

Sriprakash Jaiswal, a senior Indian minister, has apologized for his remarks that wives lose their appeal with age.

Federal Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said he had been quoted out of context, and that he was joking when he made the remarks at a poetry meeting.

Sriprakash Jaiswal said he did “not want to insult women”, and he had no intention of hurting their feelings.

Women’s groups have expressed outrage and said Sriprakash Jaiswal’s comments were “very unfortunate”.

Sriprakash Jaiswal made the remarks at a Hindi language poetry meeting in the northern city of Kanpur on Monday night.

He was referring to the Indian cricket team winning a game against Pakistan in the ongoing World T20 championship in Sri Lanka.

“New victory and new wedding, both of them have their own importance. As time will pass, the victory will become old,” Sriprakash Jaiswal was reported as telling the meeting.

“As time passes, wife also becomes old, that charm does not sustain”.

After footage of Sriprakash Jaiswal’s comments was aired on TV channels, women’s groups and opposition parties criticized the minister and demanded an apology.

The main opposition BJP said the minister had made a “sexist remark” and called him “insensitive”.

The chairman of the National Commission for Women, Mamta Sharma, said the minister’s comments were “very unfortunate”.

Vitamin D supplements have no impact on colds

0

Scientists say they can find no convincing evidence to show that taking vitamin D supplements will fend off a cold.

A New Zealand team did the “gold standard” of tests – a randomized placebo-controlled trial – to see what impact the supplements would have.

The 161 people who took daily vitamin D for 18 months caught as many colds as the 161 who took fake pills.

The study was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

However, Professor Ronald Eccles, a leading UK cold expert, said vitamin D was useful.

Prof. Ronald Eccles, of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University, said it can give the immune system a much-needed boost during winter when vitamin D reserves may be low.

He said he takes it every year as a precaution.

“There is sufficient information to indicate that vitamin D is a vital vitamin for the immune system.

“Supplementation might help to support the immune system over the winter when we are short of vitamin D.”

He said Echinacea supplements may also help ward off coughs and colds, but added: “Supplements do not work for everybody because people’s immune systems are different. It’s not a case of one size fits all.”

They are pointless unless you are deficient, he said.

We get most of our vitamin D from sunlight on our skin, but it is also found in certain foods like oily fish, eggs and breakfast cereals.

Most people should be able to get all the vitamin D they need by eating a healthy balanced diet and by getting some summer sun.

The study, carried out in New Zealand, which gets more sunshine annually than the UK, found the vitamin D supplements increased blood levels of the vitamin.

But this had no significant impact on the rate or severity of colds.

The vitamin D group caught an average of 3.7 colds per person compared with 3.8 colds per person for the placebo group.

There was no significant difference between the two groups in the number of days missed off work as a result of cold symptoms or duration of symptoms.

Adults catch between two to four colds a year and children up to 10 a year.

Toyota Motor leads US car sales rise

New car sales in the US posted the best month in more than four years, with Toyota Motor showing the biggest rise.

Toyota saw sales rise 42% in September. Honda reported a jump of 31%, while Chrysler sales increased 12%.

Analysts said buyers in the US were taking advantage of low interest rates and cheap financing.

The US car industry’s recovery has been a boon to the US economy in recent months.

Industry-wide sales were up 12.8% in September compared to a year earlier, to 1.19 million cars and light trucks.

Calculated on an annualized basis that is 14.94 million vehicles, the highest rate since March 2008 according to Autodata.

Analysts said the increased demand for passenger vehicles comes after consumers in the US delayed buying new cars during the recession which went on till 2009.

That pushed the age of vehicles on the road up, and now those consumers are looking for replacement cars.

“I think in general with the economy chugging along at about 1.5% to 2% that we are gradually seeing people come back,” said Ford chief economist Ellen Hughes-Cromwick.

Japanese carmakers continue to show the biggest gains as they rebound from a supply shortage caused by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Ralls Corp sues Barack Obama over blocked US wind farm deal

Ralls Corp, a Chinese-owned firm in the US, is suing President Barack Obama after he blocked a wind farm deal on national security grounds.

Ralls Corp, a private firm, acquired four wind farm projects near a US naval facility in Oregon earlier this year.

Barack Obama signed the order blocking the deal last week. The lawsuit alleges the US government overstepped its authority.

It is the first foreign investment to be blocked in the US for 22 years.

The move forced Ralls Corp to divest its stake in the projects, which were located near restricted airspace used by the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility.

Ralls Corp’s complaint, filed on Monday, alleged that the US president had “acted in an unlawful and unauthorized manner”.

The firm, owned by two Chinese nationals, said in its suit that Mr Obama failed to adhere to the law to treat Ralls Corp on equal terms. The court documents were made public on Tuesday.

Issuing the order last week, the White House said: “There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that Ralls Corporation… might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States.”

However, the company said in its suit that Barack Obama had not produced evidence to support that.

The military has said it uses the Oregon base to test unmanned drones and other equipment for electronic warfare. The aircraft fly as low as 200 ft (60 m) at speeds of as much as 300 mph (500 km/h).

Ralls Corp is owned by two executives from Sany Group, China’s largest engineering machine producer.

Responding to Barack Obama’s decision last week, a representative of Sany Group told Chinese state media that the deal posed no threat to US security.

Zhou Qing, a company legal officer, told Xinhua news agency on 29 September that Barack Obama’s move was more likely a campaigning ploy or to protect the US wind farm industry.

The block on the wind farms comes just weeks ahead of November’s presidential election.

China’s trade advantage over the US has become a focus of Barack Obama’s battle for re-election against Republican contender Mitt Romney.

In mid-September a new survey by the Pew Research Center showed that while most Americans saw US relations with China as “generally good”, they also saw China as posing the greatest danger to the US.

The majority of those surveyed viewed China as a competitor of the US, rather than as an enemy or partner.

But at the same time, about 52% viewed China’s rise as a world power to be a major threat to the US. At least 26% also saw China as posing the greatest danger to the US, over Iran and North Korea.

Last month, the Obama administration filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against Chinese subsidies for its car industry.

Adele’s Skyfall James Bond 007 theme leaked online

The theme song for the new James Bond movie, Skyfall, sung by Adele, has been leaked on the internet.

Adele confirmed on Monday that she had recorded the theme for Skyfall and posted a picture of the song credits on her official Twitter page.

However, the track wasn’t due to be unveiled until 0:07 BST on Friday 5 October.

The same date marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the first James Bond film, Dr. No.

Some critics are saying the style of the leaked song reminds them of Dame Shirley Bassey, famous for Bond songs like Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever.

Adele’s confirmation that she had done the song came after months of rumours.

Her photo on Twitter appears to show the cover page of the sheet music for the Skyfall theme.

It lists the composers as A. Adkins, the singer’s full name, and P. Epworth – the producer and co-writer of her hit single Rolling In The Deep.

The music has been arranged by Epworth and film composer JAC Redford, whose credits include The Help, The Iron Lady and Wall-E.

In a statement, Adele said: “I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for Skyfall.

“There’s a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song.

“But I fell in love with the script and Paul (Epworth) had some great ideas for the track and it ended up being a bit of a no brainer to do it in the end.

“It was also a lot of fun writing to a brief, something I’ve never done which made it exciting. When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life.

“I’ll be back combing my hair when I’m 60 telling people I was a Bond girl back in the day I’m sure.”

Skyfall was recorded at Abbey Road studios in London with a 77-piece orchestra.

Adele first hinted she would be working on the theme song during an interview on Jonathan Ross’s chat show on ITV1 in September 2011.

“I’m going back in the studio in November, fingers crossed,” Adele told Jonathan Ross.

“Well this is actually a theme, what I’ve got to do for, um… Wow. That’s really giving something away isn’t it?”

Shortly after Adele’s appearance on The Jonathan Ross show last September, her friend Tinie Tempah, said he’d spoken to Adele about her Bond recording.

Speaking at the Mercury Prize on 6 September last year the rapper said: “I was with her [Adele] yesterday, she was telling me about it and that’s amazing.

“I’ve always wanted to do a Bond theme. I’m a bit jealous actually. No, let’s leave it to her, it’s always a really big diva that does it right?”

Recent Bond themes have met with a poor reception.

Chris Cornell’s gritty You Know My Name, from Casino Royale, was described as “unexpectedly dull” and “forgettable”; while Jack White and Alicia Keys’ duet Another Way To Die, from Quantum Of Solace, was branded “a missed opportunity”.

Adele’s theme is the first to carry the same name as the film since Madonna’s Die Another Day in 2002.

The 23rd Bond film, Skyfall, is due for release on 26 October in the UK.

Latin America economies slow in 2012

Latin America will grow at a slower pace than 2011, primarily due to weaker growth in Argentina and Brazil, a United Nations report has suggested.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) forecast the whole area would slow to 3.2% in 2012, down from 4.3% last year.

It is also less than the 3.7% that ECLAC predicted in June.

ECLAC blamed the global economy, which has been hit by the eurozone debt crisis and slowing Chinese growth.

The report, the Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean, identified private consumption as “the main driver of regional growth, thanks to the growth in labor markets, increased credit and – in some cases – remittances”.

Brazil and Argentina are forecast to grow less than their neighbors. Argentina’s economy will grow 2% and Brazil will grow 1.6%, ECLAC suggested.

That is less than predicted by Brazil’s finance ministry, which cut its growth forecast for 2012 to 2% this year, down from its previous forecast of 3%.

President Dilma Rousseff recently launched the first in a series of measures that could inject up to $50 billion into the economy over the next five years.

ECLAC said that regional growth this year would be led by Panama – at 9.5% – and Haiti, which is expected to expand by 6% this year.

Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Venezuela are expected to grow by about 5%. Mexico will expand by 4%.

Paraguay will be the only country to shrink, by 2%, it predicted.

ECLAC said the Caribbean sub-region would grow by 1.6%.

Salmonella found in smoked salmon made by Dutch fish producer Foppen

About 300 people in the Netherlands and the US have caught salmonella after eating Dutch smoked salmon, say Dutch health authorities.

About 200 people have fallen ill in the Netherlands along with about 100 people in the US, said the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM).

An RIVM official said this could be the “tip of the iceberg”.

Smoked salmon made by the Dutch fish producer Foppen is being taken off the shelves.

Foppen supplies major supermarket chains including large retailer Albert Heijn, said the Dutch food safety authority, the NVWA.

“Some 200 people have fallen ill through contaminated salmon” in the Netherlands, said the RIVM, while about 100 people in the US are infected “by the same type of salmonella”.

But this was “probably the tip of the iceberg”, the institute’s Hareld Wychgel said – “the real number of infected people is likely to be much higher”.

Smoked salmon produced by Foppen has been taken off the shelves in the Netherlands, and an international recall targeting salmon sold in the US was being prepared.

In a statement on its website, Foppen offered its “sincere apologies for any inconvenience”.

Infection normally causes diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and sometimes fever and vomiting.

The symptoms usually clear up in four to seven days, but in some cases treatment may be required for dehydration.
