Cities that Have Taken Measures to Improve Road Safety during COVID-19

0

During the COVID-19 pandemic there are less people on the roads across Europe. With less cars and traffic, drivers tend to drive more recklessly. There has been an increase in accidents on the continent. In response to this, cities around Europe are taking steps to improve safety when the roads are emptier and people are driving faster. While each city has their own problem with road safety, all of them are creating their own solutions. A universal issue that is contributing to accidents and making more dangerous roads is speeding. Below are some of the stats about speeding and how various European cities are dealing with it.

Empty Roads & Speeding

Whenever roads empty, the speeding increases for those still driving. Furthermore, according to the personal injury claims law firm McGinley Solicitors, speeds have gone up during the COVID-19 pandemic. While speeds have increased, the number of accidents have gone up. This goes for accidents with cars, pedestrians, cyclists, and more. Speeding isn’t the only problem, people are also drinking and driving and getting on the roads during inclement weather. Driving under the influence also increases the speed of drivers and the likelihood that an accident will occur. The problems are multi-faceted, but so are the solutions. Each country and city has their own way of dealing with speeding, driving under the influence, accidents, and deaths in their own way.

Berlin

Berlin is already known for being a forward-thinking and progressive city. It is a city of constant change and flux. It has been destroyed and rebuilt, evolving into a modern and accessible place to live. The city has responded to the increase in speed and accidents by temporarily widening the cycle lanes, allowing wider distance for cars and social distancing. The response is to create new space for pedestrians and bicyclists, but with so many vehicles in Germany some are not happy about the new roads.

40 percent less people are on the roads. The extra space and less traffic has provided safer situations for people who want to walk and cycle, but cars are also now having to avoid more pedestrians. Currently there aren’t really reliable numbers on how this will effect accidents between cars and pedestrians, but it seems clear cars are having to be more careful when they are driving these widened roads. It is a significant change, and not everyone likes change, but they are necessary in this ever-evolving pandemic.

Brussels

Brussels is another progressive city that has responded quickly to the changing roads during the COVID-19 pandemic. The city has decided to lower the speed limit inside their main drag, the inner ring road. The speed limit will be lowered to 20 kmh. Brussel’s center is shaped like a pentagon, which makes it ideal for pedestrians. This means that pedestrians have space to move around, and bicycles can more easily maneuver. Again this creates more foot-traffic for drivers to navigate, but with so few cars on the road it makes for a socially distanced and traversable intersection. There are also concerns about the center becoming a meeting place. With social distancing, Brussels is learning how best to use their city.

Milan

Milan is also taking measures to open up traffic to pedestrians while making the roads safer for drivers. They are doing their best to open up the center for walking, closing 35km streets to cars. Like other Italian cities, Milan is changing its environmental regulations to make cities livable and social-distanced. While many city centers like Milan are closing to car traffic and opening up for pedestrians, there are still less cars on the highways and people are speeding, causing an increase in accidents.

Paris

Many large cities around Europe have begun rolling out cycling lanes that give cars and pedestrians more room. The city aims to create 650 kilometers of lockdown cycle lanes. This will not only provide space for social distancing, it will help commuters and others who are taking a ride for exercise. With fewer cars on the streets of the French capital, it provides a more regulated system of streets where drivers have to be careful with pedestrians around. This system, while it is becoming common, is especially suited to French society.

European cities around the continent are adapting to the new streets that have less cars and more pedestrians on them. Everyone is adapting to social distancing with less people on the roads and more people trying to get out of the house and other closed spaces. We all can learn how to adapt our cities like the ones above.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett Confirmed to Supreme Court

Judge Amy Coney Barrett has been confirmed to the Supreme Court by the US Senate in a victory for President Donald Trump aweek before the presidential election.

President Trump’s fellow Republicans voted 52-48 to approve Judge Barrett, overcoming the unified opposition of Democrats.

Justice Barrett’s appointment seals for the foreseeable future a 6-3 conservative majority on the top US judicial body.

Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden called the move rushed and unprecedented.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said that by going ahead with the vote so close to the election the Republican majority was “lighting its credibility on fire”.

Democrats fear Judge Barrett’s confirmation to the lifelong post will favor Republicans in politically sensitive cases that reach America’s top court for potentially decades to come.

Amy Coney Barrett, 48, took the oath of office at the White House alongside President Trump.

Only one Republican, Senator Susan Collins, who faces a tough re-election battle in Maine, voted against the president’s nominee in October 26 vote.

Amy Coney Barrett is the third appointed by President Donald Trump, after Neil Gorsuch in 2017 and Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.

Amy Coney Barrett is President Trump’s Nomination for Supreme Court

Who Is Amy Coney Barrett, President Trump’s SCOTUS Pick?

The federal appeals court judge from Indiana fills the vacancy left by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a liberal icon who died last month.

Supreme Court justices take two oaths before beginning their job – the constitutional oath and the judicial oath.

President Trump, just returned from campaigning in Pennsylvania, presided over Justice Barrett’s constitutional oath ceremony on October 26.

He said: “This is a momentous day for America, for the United States constitution and for the fair and impartial rule of law.”

The president added: “She is one of our nation’s most brilliant legal scholars and she will make an outstanding justice on the highest court in our land.”

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a conservative, administered the oath of office to his new colleague.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett said afterwards: “A judge declares independence not only from the Congress and the president, but also from the private beliefs that might otherwise move her.

“The judicial oath captures the essence of the judicial duty: the rule of law must always control.”

She took the judicial oath in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court on October 27.

The White House ceremony took place on the south lawn of the executive mansion. It came a month after a similar event to unveil Amy Coney Barrett as the president’s nominee was linked to a Covid-19 outbreak that was followed by the president himself testing positive for the disease.

At 48, Amy Coney Barrett becomes the Supreme Court’s youngest justice.

Tanzania Elections 2020: Zanzibar Presidential Candidate Arrested at Poll

Maalim Seif Sharif, the presidential candidate of Zanzibar’s main opposition party, was arrested a day before local and national elections in Tanzania, his party has announced.

On October 27, Maalim Seif Sharif was at a polling station when police officers hauled him away, his ACT Wazalendo party said.

US Ambassador to Tanzania Donald Wright said he was “alarmed by reports from Zanzibar and elsewhere of violence, deaths and detentions”.

Police have denied killing three people on Pemba on October 26.

Zanzibar is a group of islands off the coast of Tanzania which have semi-autonomous status from the mainland.

In Zanzibar, residents vote for the islands’ leaders, including the election of a Zanzibari president, as well as in Tanzania’s national election.

The authorities have yet to comment on Maalim Seif Sharif’s alleged arrest.

Tanzania’s police chief Simon Sirro said police did not kill three people in Pemba, adding that 42 people had been arrested in connection with the violence.

Internet users across Tanzania have also reported difficulties accessing WhatsApp and Twitter ahead of the polls.

ACT Wazalendo said its presidential candidate was detained trying to cast his vote as polling stations opened a day early to allow officials from the Zanzibar Electoral Commission, returning officers and security personnel to take part.

Zanzibar has a history of contested polls, including in 2015 when they were annulled for not being free and fair. The opposition boycotted the re-run and the ruling Chama Cha Mapenduzi (CCM) party’s candidate was declared the winner.

There 17 presidential candidates in Zanzibar.

The tussle is likely to be between Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad, now in his sixth run for president, and Hussein Mwinyi who is the son of a former president from the ruling CCM party.

Zanzibar’s current president Ali Mohammed Shein is stepping down after serving two five-year terms in office.

Police to Interrogate Nestlé-Russia

The MIA Administration for the Kaluga Region opened a criminal case on the theft of land by OOO NLMK-Kaluga (LLC) with a total area of 8.35 hectares, which was later acquired by the Russian division of the Swiss company Nestlé.

According to the investigation materials, the site is located in the Vorsino industrial park between the two enterprises. The creation of the park was initiated by the government of the Kaluga region, exempting investors from paying the tax on the property of organizations and reducing the income tax rate.

At the same time, the seller of the land was a certain individual entrepreneur Arabadzhi B.F., who allegedly bought it from NLMK-Kaluga for 28 thousand rubles a year earlier, and then sold it to Nestlé for 62.3 million rubles. At the same time, the Swiss company turned to the regional authorities with a request to remove from the territory the infrastructure of the former owner at the expense of the Kaluga Region Development Corporation – the sewer network and modular buildings.

At present, the investigation has requested Nestlé-Russia LLC to provide information about the persons who were directly involved in the preparation, conclusion and execution of the contract with the individual entrepreneur Arabadzhi B.F. to interrogate them and to clear out the circumstances of the case.

According to the Office of Rosreestr (Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography) of the Kaluga Region, it was one of Nestlé’s managers for work with state authorities who was engaged in the execution of the transaction with individual entrepreneur Arabadzhi, however, when he was interrogated by the investigator, he refused to testify, citing the Art. 51 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

Novye Izvestia editorial was also unable to receive on its request a prompt comment from Nestlé.

Negotiating For the First Time? Deal or No Deal, Keep These Five Tips in Mind!

0

Beads of sweat are rolling down your face. It’s a big day. You know you’ve worked for this. But wait, that may not help. You have to convince this person.. or else.. or else?

‘Well, do or die!’

Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. But it’s a significant moment, nevertheless. And you don’t want to mess this up! What do you do?

‘..Panic and run!’

No, that’s not ideal. How about you read some negotiation tips instead?

‘That’s a real thing?’

Yes. Get your reading glasses. This might just save the day.

#1 Improve Your Listening Skills

It’s no secret that the number you mention first is a number that may not be the final one. The trick is to be quiet and let the other person do the talking. That doesn’t mean you’re not contributing.

While the other person is going on about how small his/her budget is, you can be racking your brains to let him know how you’re going to make a difference to his company and increase those numbers in the long run! Don’t interrupt them while they’re making their case. Let them speak. Once they have said all they have to, you take the floor and do your routine!

#2 More Information, The Merrier

When you pay attention to the person you’re negotiating with, you will want to know more to uncover the full picture. To discover everything that there is to the story, asking questions works like a dream. Finding out more about the subject will move the conversation forward.

The more details you have on their preferred negotiation strategies, the better you’ll be able to tackle them.

#3 What’s The Hurry? Don’t Rush It!

Haven’t we all been in negotiations where we said the right thing at the wrong time – making your point only to realize that the boss had a better one?

That does sound painful. Being alert to your surroundings and the other person’s mood is crucial to being in a negotiation. You can have any number of strategies or tactics up your sleeve, but if you don’t wait for the right moment – it could all go down the drain.

Make sure that you have the right timing with your words, actions, and offers. Who knows, you might just get what you were looking for!

#4 Sometimes you HAVE To Ask For It!

Here’s an idea – Take your nervousness and anxiety – roll it up into a ball, throw it high up in the air, and hit it out of the park. But here’s a more practical tip – How about you pen down all the reasons why you deserve to have what you are aiming for. Without considering yourself too ambitious or demanding, make a list of everything that can support your claim.

That was the easy part. Now comes the tough part. You have got to ask for it! Sure, it might be nerve-wracking and mind-boggling, sometimes you may not even get what you want, but the important thing is that you put your demand across. And sometimes, that can be rewarding in more ways than one!

#5 Don’t Forget Where You Are Coming From

Sure, the other person will have their problems – Not enough money, no available positions, no good enough opportunity, etc. However, one must have their morals and principles intact. Once you know what your reason for being in the situation is, you’ll rarely back down!

Some values cannot be compromised – and you should know what those are. Whether they are settling for a lower designation of not receiving a good enough offer or not enough perks. Know where your bar is and don’t go lower – because it may become a habit, and not by choice!

Conclusion

Phew! That was one tough negotiation, wasn’t it? But, it was a good experience.

Hopefully, you’ve learned something for the next negotiation!

Harris County Judge Accused of Racial Bias and Misconduct

Press release

A major political bombshell comes just days before the election of many Harris County criminal judges.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office filed a formal complaint with the Texas Judicial Conduct Commission over alleged misconduct by Judge Darrell Jordan, the current administrative judge of the Harris County Misdemeanor Courts.

The 26-page complaint alleges Judge Jordan accused prosecutors of racial bias and improperly injecting race into the proceedings in his court — telling prosecutors they reminded him “of a slave driver, you whip the slaves, work them in the field, and mistreat them.”

The complaint details the threatening treatment of an African-American prosecutor when they declined to grant pretrial diversion to an African-American defendant during a plea proceeding. Judge Jordan ordered the prosecutor to “Turn around and look at the people sitting down. Everybody in here looks like you.”

The District Attorney’s office complained the commentary was outside “the ethical boundaries of judicial conduct.”

The complaint details allegations Jordan threatened prosecutors in chambers for “disrespecting” him when he found out that a case he had found no probable cause in might be re-filed. One memo from a prosecutor said Jordan described himself not as a judge, but the “king” of Court 16. There are claims Jordan threatened prosecutors with contempt behind closed doors.

Judge Acknowledges Woman at Center of International Divorce Battle “May Have Had a Good Case”

Dolcefino Consulting learned of the Judicial Conduct Commission complaint after company President Wayne Dolcefino was held in contempt by Jordan and jailed overnight in the Harris County Jail.  Hidden camera footage proved that Jordan’s basis for holding Dolcefino in contempt was false. Dolcefino’s appeal is pending in the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

The District Attorney’s Office complaint was filed just two months before then felony administrative Judge Maria Jackson filed her own Judicial Conduct Commission complaint. Judge Jackson also accused Jordan of hostility, claiming that Jordan “verbally intimidated me to the point of fear for my physical wellbeing.”  Jackson also stated that Jordan’s “bullying, yelling and intimidation would not be tolerated in any other setting.”

“A day after the meeting, I saw a man on the street who looked like Judge Jordan and felt physically in fear,” Jackson said. Jackson is an African American judge who also ran against Rodney Ellis for County Commissioner. Commissioner Ellis is the largest donor to the Jordan campaign.

The District Attorney’s complaint was filed in April of 2019 after complaints from prosecutors in the misdemeanor division, but both District Attorney Kim Ogg and Judge Jordan fought to keep it secret. The Texas Attorney General ruled the complaint and prosecutor’s memos about Jordan’s purported conduct were public records. Dolcefino Consulting agreed to redact the names of prosecutors out of fear of retaliation by Judge Jordan and other misdemeanor court judges so the complaint could be released.

There is no evidence the Judicial Conduct Commission has taken action on either complaint.

“I think the public has a fundamental right to know whether justice was handed out based on race. Racial bias has no place in criminal justice, whatever color it is,” said Dolcefino Consulting President Wayne Dolcefino. “I also think Kim Ogg has to explain why she kept this alleged injustice secret from the voters. Sure — they are both democrats — but justice has to take precedence over political parties. People deserve to know this before they reelect a judge with clear biases.”

Final Debate 2020: Donald Trump and Joe Biden Clash over Covid-19 and Race

President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden clashed over Covid-19 and race while trading corruption charges, in their final live TV debate which took place on Thursday night in Nashville, Tennessee.

The first debate was a chaotic, insult-filled exchange between the two candidates. But on October 22, the personal attacks were (mostly) out – instead audiences got the chance to hear some of what Biden and Trump had to offer to Americans.

The muted mics probably helped to cool temperatures and the moderator, Kristen Welker, has been celebrated for encouraging a higher standard of debate.

With arguments on coronavirus, race, climate change and corruption, both candidates made it clear how different their visions for the US were.

On the pandemic, Joe Biden would not rule out more lockdowns, while President Trump insisted it was time to reopen the US.

Donald Trump cited unsubstantiated claims Joe Biden personally profited from his son’s business dealings. The Democrat brought up President Trump’s opaque taxes.

Joe Biden has a solid lead with 11 days to go until the presidential election.

However, winning the most votes does not always win the election, and the margin is narrower in a handful of states that could decide the race either way.

More than 47 million people have already cast their ballots in a voting surge driven by the pandemic.

This is already more than voted before polling day in the 2016 election. There are about 230 million eligible voters in total.

In snap polls – from CNN, Data Progress and US Politics – most respondents said Joe Biden had won the debate by a margin of more than 50% to about 40%.

The final debate was a less acrimonious and more substantive affair than the pair’s previous showdown on September 29, which devolved into insults and name-calling.

Following that political brawl, debate organizers this time muted microphones during the candidates’ opening statements on each topic to minimize disruption.

However, the 90-minute debate, moderated by NBC’s Kristen Welker, was the scene of plenty of personal attacks between the opponents, whose mutual dislike was palpable.

White House 2020: States Break Early Voting Records

Second Presidential Debate: President Trump Refuses to Take Part in Virtual Debate

In individual closing argument to voters, they offered starkly different visions for the nation on everything from shutting down the US to tackle coronavirus, to shutting down the fossil fuel industry to confront climate change.

Nowhere was the distinction between the two candidates more apparent than in their approach to the pandemic.

Asked about his support for more lockdowns if the scientists recommended it, Joe Biden, a Democrat, did not rule it out.

Donald Trump, a Republican, said it was wrong to inflict further damage on the economy because of an infection from which most people recover.

“This is a massive country with a massive economy,” said the president.

“People are losing their jobs, they’re committing suicide. There’s depression, alcohol, drugs at a level nobody’s ever seen before.”

Donald Trump, 74, declared that the virus was “going away” and that a vaccine would be ready by the end of the year, while Joe Biden, 77, warned the nation was heading towards “a dark winter”.

President Trump said: “We’re learning to live with it.”

Joe Biden countered: “Come on. We’re dying with it.”

He laid blame for the 220,000-plus American deaths as a consequence of the pandemic at President Trump’s door.

“Anyone who’s responsible for that many deaths should not remain president of the United States of America,” he said.

During a back-and-forth on race relations, President Trump said: “I am the least racist person in this room.”

He brought up the 1994 crime bill that Joe Biden helped draft and which Black Lives Matter blames for the mass incarceration of African Americans.

However, Joe Biden said Donald Trump was “one of the most racist presidents we’ve had in modern history. He pours fuel on every single racist fire”.

He added: “This guy is a [racial] dog whistle about as big as a fog horn.”

President Trump brought up purported leaked emails from Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, about his business dealings in China.

However, Joe Biden denied the president’s unfounded insinuation that the former US vice-president somehow had a stake in the ventures.

“I think you owe an explanation to the American people,” said President Trump.

Joe Biden said: “I have not taken a single penny from any country whatsoever. Ever.”

He referred to the New York Times recently reporting that President Trump had a bank account in China and paid $188,561 in taxes from 2013-15 to the country, compared with $750 in US federal taxes that the newspaper said he had paid in 2016-2017 when he became president.

President Trump said: “I have many bank accounts and they’re all listed and they’re all over the place.

“I mean, I was a businessman doing business.”

Why the House Market Crash Occurred

0
Housing Markets

By now, you’ll have heard of the Financial Crisis of 2007 to 2008. Financial crises are rarely caused by one thing. They are usually a culmination of several things. For example, the main reasons for this crisis were the stock market crash and the housing market crash. Why did the housing market crash occur? Here is what you need to know.

The Players

In the beginning, there were three leading players in the housing market. There was the homeowner who wanted to buy a home, the bank which lent the homeowner the money to buy the house, and investors with a lot of money who wanted to invest in an asset or assets that had high returns. The general assumption was that the price of homes was and would always be going up.

Then, what went wrong when the housing market crash happened?

Home Owners Borrowed from a Bank

When the average citizen decided that they wanted to become a homeowner, they saved the amount needed for the down payment and found a home they liked. They then approached a bank that would be willing to lend them money to buy the house. For the bank to have the money to lend to homeowners, they had to take loans from federal reserves. They paid them through the interest rates on the mortgages. Initially, the banks only offered loans to prime borrowers. They had good credit, proof of income and proved that they would pay back the money they borrowed.

Investment Banks Bought Loans from Banks

Investment banks approached the banks about buying the mortgages from them. The banks agreed to this because it transferred most of the risk to the investors. The investment banks took loans and bought many mortgages from the banks. Banks used this money to pay off part of their loans. The investment banks then package the mortgages into structured products called collateralized debt obligation, which they sold to investors. They were sold in slices to investors with different risk appetites.

Banks Started Giving Loans to Subprime Home Buyers

There were no more prime buyers; therefore, the banks started giving loans to subprime home buyers. They had bad credit, no proof of income and sometimes no papers. The idea was that if a person defaulted on their payments, they could sell the house again to someone else. However, more and more people – particularly the subprime buyers – were unable to pay their premiums; therefore, more and more homes become foreclosed.

Houses Foreclosed, House Prices Fell

With more houses foreclosing, the supply for houses began to exceed the demand. This consequently led to the fall in prices of the homes. When prime buyers saw these lower prices, they saw no value in paying premiums for overpriced houses, and they too stopped paying their premiums. Now, investment banks had CDOs they would like to sell off to investors who don’t want to buy. Banks also had mortgages they wanted to sell to investment bankers who didn’t want anymore.

Banks and Investment Banks Went Bankrupt

A crash occurred because banks and investment banks could no longer pay the money they owed and declare bankruptcy. The investors informed the homeowners that they had no money to pay them back as the value of the assets had dropped, and the investment banks could not pay them back. In the end, a lot of people lost their money, people and institutions went bankrupt, and it was a while before the economy recovered.

Pope Francis Endorses Same-Sex Civil Unions

In a recent documentary, Pope Francis has said that he thinks same-sex couples should be allowed to have “civil unions”.

The Pope made the comments, which observers say are his clearest remarks yet on gay relationships, in a documentary directed by Evgeny Afineevsky.

He said in the film, which premiered on October 21: “Homosexual people have a right to be in a family.

“They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it.

“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered.”

Pope Francis added that he “stood up for that”, apparently referring to his time as Archbishop of Buenos Aires when, although opposing same-sex marriages in law, he supported some legal protections for same-sex couples.

The film Francesco, about the life and work of Pope Francis, premiered as part of the Rome Film Festival.

As well as the Pope’s comments on civil unions, the film also shows him encouraging two gay men to attend church with their three children.

Under current Catholic doctrine, gay relationships are referred to as “deviant behavior”.

Easter 2020: Pope Francis Urges People Not to Yield to Fear Over Coronavirus

In 2003, the Vatican’s doctrinal body, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said that “respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or to legal recognition of homosexual unions”.

The Pope’s comments are the latest in a series of sentiments he’s expressed about LGBT rights – voicing some support, but not a full endorsement.

In 2013, in the book On Heaven and Earth, the Pope said that legally equating same-sex relationships to heterosexual marriages would be “an anthropological regression”.

The Pope also said then that if same-sex couples were allowed to adopt, “there could be affected children… every person needs a male father and a female mother that can help them shape their identity”.

That same year, Pope Francis reaffirmed the Church’s position that homosexual acts were sin, but said homosexual orientation was not.

“If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge?” he asked.

In 2014 it was reported that Pope Francis had expressed support for civil unions for same-sex partners in an interview, but the Holy See’s press office denied this.

Then in 2018, the Pope said he was “worried” about homosexuality in the clergy, and that it was “a serious matter”.

CEO of Ferrari Energy Adam Ferrari Discusses 7 Recession Resistant Industries You Can Enter as an Entrepreneur

0

Some entrepreneurs aren’t in business to present a new idea; they’re there because they love the thrill of entrepreneurship. These individuals aren’t necessarily looking to revolutionize anything. All they want is a business resistant to the ebb and flow of the economy. For some, the current events in the US are feeding fears of an impending recession. Reasonable or irrational speculation, only time will tell. In this article, Adam Ferrari – CEO of Ferrari Energy – details seven industries considered recession-resistant.

Technology

Innovative technology is at the forefront of the global economy. We love our widgets, and technology holds out the promise of making our lives evermore productive, enjoyable, safe, and healthy. A prolonged recession could be expected to dampen high-end, less essential technology products. Still, household and business staples such as phones, TVs, and computers will continue to sell with additional competitive pressure.

Energy

Our need for reliable energy is constant. This reliance is not dependant on economic conditions. Innovative energy solutions can be expected to experience waning interest. Still, legacy energy sources such as oil, natural gas, coal, wind power, and solar will continue to meet the country’s needs.

Pet products

Maybe not the most obvious candidate for this list, but people are not any more likely to stop caring for their pets under poor economic conditions than they are their family members.

Healthcare and Senior Services

Hopefully, even more than pets, people will not decrease their healthcare expenditures under anything less than the direst economic conditions. People continue to age and become ill and will need medical services. These are the least discretionary services.

Construction

Even in an economic recession, construction will continue. It may look different than it does under bright financial news, but it will continue nonetheless. If new homes sales slump, upgrades and remodel work usually increases.

Security

Poor economic conditions affect scofflaws just as they do law-abiding citizens. Poor economic conditions historically have been accompanied by an increase in crime. The need for security, both physical and cyber, will not decrease in a financial downturn. The more cost-effective a security solution is, the better it will fair in these conditions.

Food and Beverage

People need to eat no matter the stock market. Every other category will suffer before food and beverage. The more basic the food item, the more stable it will prove to be. Exotic items are more susceptible to economic conditions.

To find the common denominator for all of the above industries or to identify others, ask, “what will people need, even if the economy tanks?”

About Adam Ferrari

Adam Ferrari is an accomplished petroleum engineer and is the founder of a private oil and gas company, Ferrari Energy. Throughout various roles in the oil and gas industry, Adam was inspired to learn more about property rights and the inner workings of petroleum exploration and extraction. After gaining expertise in the energy sector, Adam obtained knowledge of the financial industry through his time at an investment banking firm. He then pivoted to bootstrapping his own business from the ground up as he blended his energy and finance knowledge.

The Blunt Approach: Neal Kwatra on Representative Max Rose’s Chances Against GOP Challenger Nicole Malliotakis

Politics can be confusing. Opinions can change, and candidates are not always truthful. This is why researching and understanding who you are voting for is so important. Still, races often get messy and hard to follow, with candidates trading blows until the final bell.

This is certainly the case in the feverish race between Rep. Max Rose and GOP State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis in the most hotly contested congressional election in the city.

Representative Max Rose: A Blunt Candidate

Democrat Rose is seeking reelection after his first win in 2018 following nearly 30 years of Republican winners in a district that includes Staten Island and South Brooklyn. His straight-as-an-arrow, honest approach likely resonated with voters.

“Blunt” is the best word to describe Rose. He is an aggressive, call-it-like-he-sees-it candidate who pulls no punches. An example: In one short campaign advertisement, he said, “Bill de Blasio is the worst mayor in the history of New York City.” In fact, that was the entire 15-second ad.

De Blasio, a progressive mayor and fellow Democrat, has been the subject of a lot of criticism due to his views and ineffective policies. Neal Kwatra says Rose was smart to distance himself this way, adding that Rose has “a very identifiable anti-de Blasio brand as a part of who he is, which is a huge asset in a district like that, frankly.”

This affinity for speaking bluntly extends into his remarks regarding Malliotakis. He has referred to her as a “rubber stamp” for Republicans on major issues who supports the President and his policies.

Rose also noted that Malliotakis said in 2017 she regretted voting for President Trump, but then changed her mind when he backed her. As Election Day nears, both candidates are slugging it out before voters decide whether they prefer Rose’s honesty to Trump’s support for Malliotakis.

Regardless of your political beliefs, Kwatra says it best regarding Representative Rose. “He’s very visceral and, frankly, New Yorkers appreciate that in their politicians,” Kwatra says. If that bears out, Rose certainly has a fighting chance of retaining his seat in the House of Representatives.

About Neal Kwatra:

Kwatra founded Metropolitan Public Strategies (MPS) in 2013 and has since been at the forefront of some of the most fiercely contested political and advocacy campaigns in New York and across the nation. Kwatra has fought to uphold his ideals with great tenacity and continues to expand the reach of MPS into the strategic management of nationally recognized grassroots and issue advocacy campaigns.

Robert Redford’s Son James Dies Aged 58

Robert Redford’s son, James, an activist and filmmaker, has died at the age of 58.

James Redford died on October 16 after being diagnosed with liver cancer, his wife Kyle confirmed via Twitter.

Robert Redford’s publicist, Cindi Berger, said: “The grief is immeasurable with the loss of a child.”

“Jamie [James] was a loving son, husband and father,” added Berger, who asked for privacy for the Redford family “during this difficult time”.

“His legacy lives on through his children, art, filmmaking and devoted passion to conservation and the environment.”

James Redford made documentary films, including The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.

His latest film Playing Keeps, which explored the importance of play and downtime in our lives, was given a virtual premiere online at this month’s Mill Valley Film Festival in California.

Dealing with Privacy Issues: 5 Things Website Owners Need to Know

Owning and operating a website today has many new levels of complexity many wouldn’t have considered at all a few years ago. One of these complexities, internet privacy, is a big talking point at the moment, so let’s take a look at a couple of considerations when you’re building your website to be privacy focused.

SSL is a Must

The first jumping off point of any discussion related to website security and privacy is how information is exchanged between your users and your website’s server. If you are collecting any information, particularly personal information, ensuring you have an SSL certificate that is valid for all your domains and subdomains is critical. It’s a huge sign of trust for your users and it’s required for many reasons, least of all because modern browsers are quick to inform users about any websites that aren’t using one.

Don’t Store Data You Don’t Need

Consider every piece of data you choose to store on your users, whether it be via a sign-up form or automatic data logging. Decide how important it is for you to have this information and stop logging or requesting information you don’t need. The less information you have on your users, the less trouble you’re likely to face with privacy issues. A general rule of thumb is to keep as little information as possible on your users.

You Must Have a Privacy Policy

A privacy policy tells users of your product, service, app or website exactly what personal information you collect from them and what you intend to do with it. Your website requires a privacy policy by law (like the GDPR in the European Union) and this law requires that you adhere to it. Because websites are global and anyone can access them, you need to make sure you’re compliant to the best degree possible. Including specific things in your privacy policy is important to cover these bases. At a minimum, your privacy policy should include the following:

  • A thorough list of all the information your website collects from your users, whether they are logged in or not.
  • How you intend to notify visitors to your website of any changes to your privacy policy.
  • A quick how-to for those who would like to access and/or change this information, delete their data, or opt out of any information being stored.
  • Explicitly state the age restriction for accessing and using your website.
  • An explanation on how any information you collect might be shared. Remember to include any third-party payment processors and other trusted third parties in this list too.

Your privacy policy should be easy to find and written in language that can be understood by anyone. If you need a privacy policy, you can use a privacy policy generator as noted here.

Protect the Data You Store

Your website needs to have steps in place to stop data breaches to the best of your ability. If you’re using a commercial CMS or online hosting service, they will do most of the heavy lifting for you and are thus recommended for the less technical minded. If you do host your own web server or platform, making sure that you’re always running the latest version of any web hosting software (like Apache or nginx), database software (like MySQL) and your actual CMS platform is critical. Having a working understanding of how to secure a webserver is also important, and if this is beyond your scope, rather opt for a web hosting company that can take care of this for you.

Use a Third-Party Payment Processor

The easiest way to deal with any privacy issues related to the processing of credit card data is to offload this responsibility onto a third party. While some information will still be sent to the credit card processor, like your user’s details, your website won’t be interacting with, storing or transmitting credit card data, which is a real benefit when it comes to dealing with privacy issues, as this is one of the most sensitive.

The most important consideration when you’re dealing with privacy issues is to be as transparent and open with your users as possible. Let them know each time you’re storing information or what you’re going to do with their information so that they’re never left surprised by anything.

Making the Switch to Renewable Energy? Avoid These Common Misconceptions

For more than a century, fossil fuels have been the source of the world’s power. The only thing about it is that it has been harming the environment in the process, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, carbon emissions, and climate change. And as more and more people become aware of the harmful impact of fossil fuels, they’re looking into safer, alternative energy sources to do their part in helping the environment.

Unfortunately, in their efforts to make positive changes, it’s going to lead to misconceptions in conducting research. This can then sway decisions, and that’s okay… It’s natural to have questions about how renewable energy works and why it’s the better option over fossil fuels because if you’re going to make the switch, you need to understand what you’re switching to.

There are, of course, different ways to generate renewable energy, so it’s understandable to want to know if solar power is the best way to generate clean energy over hydropower or if making the switch really will save on your electric bill… But in searching for answers to those questions, you’re also going to run into mistruths and falsehoods that simply aren’t true…

As you know, you can’t believe everything you see or read online, so to set the record straight, if you’re planning on switching to renewable energy or just considering it, here are some common misconceptions you want to avoid.

Misconceptions About Renewable Energy to Avoid

1. Renewable Energy Sources Can’t Provide Enough Electricity For Your Needs

There is a great concern among skeptics that wind and solar energy can’t meet the world’s growing needs for electricity, especially during certain seasons and times of the day. Well, the funny thing about this particular skepticism is that wind and solar power are infinite resources that can be used all the time; non-renewable sources are actually deteriorating in supply.

According to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), not only is renewable energy feasible but it’s making the grid more reliable as well. In fact, the US could reach an 80% renewable energy penetration rate by 2050. So to say that renewable energy can’t provide enough electricity to meet the world’s needs is pure blasphemy.

2. Renewable Energy is Expensive

One of the biggest draws to switching to renewable energy is because it lowers your electric bill! Why else do you think people are having solar panels installed on their roofs? To speak further on that, people who aren’t able to have solar panels installed are still able to reap the benefits of renewable energy simply by switching to alternative electricity.

People in Texas are switching electricity providers and are now able to find the least expensive energy rates in TX. It’s cheap because it’s a natural resource that doesn’t require any manmade efforts. People don’t have to invest millions of dollars for the sun to rise or for the wind to blow, therefore, renewable energy is a great way to not only help the environment but also lower your electric bill.

3. Renewable Energy Kills Birds

It’s been said that clean energy kills birds, and that’s just not true. Now, it’s important to note that wind turbines have caused some bird deaths by flying into the turbines but not the way people are making it out to be. According to the National Audubon Society, bird deaths are more likely due to cats, tall buildings, and the greenhouse effect of excessive pollution.

4. Renewable Energy Isn’t a Reliable Source

This myth is more so directed towards solar and wind energy. The theory is that because sun and wind can’t be produced around the clock that it isn’t reliable. Well, this is where people go wrong. Wind and solar energy actually go hand-in-hand.

Wind speeds tend to pick up at night and solar energy is produced during the day but just because they’re not sources that are produced around the clock doesn’t mean that they’re unreliable. Things like batteries and other energy storage sources have made wind and solar energy very reliable sources, giving you the flexibility to use the power whenever you need it.

So, just because the wind isn’t blowing or if the sun isn’t visible to you, that doesn’t mean your house will shut down. Both wind and solar energy are abundant sources. Biomass, hydropower, and geothermal are energy sources that indeed do produce electricity around the clock.

Stocks to Look Out for in Early 2021

With many hundreds of millions of people around the world looking forward to the end of 2020 and the uncertainty that it has brought to the global arena, investors are likewise turning their sights towards 2021. It has understandably been an up and down year when it comes to investments. It has been difficult to make sense of it all. That is why it is important to look for solid investments that have the potential to bring many of those portfolios back into positive territory relatively quickly. With that in mind, here are some stocks to look out for in early 2021.

Pinterest

People are spending more time at home these days. That means that many people are finding that they have more time to spend on hobbies and crafts. This renewed interest in that sector of the economy is what Pinterest has capitalized on. It is such a simple concept, but they have developed a visual search engine that craft lovers have found so useful. It is possible to find advice on a range of home decor items, fashion, and even beauty. In just the past year, Pinterest has seen the number of active users each month increase by 39%. This means that 416 million people spent a significant amount of time on the site last year. That translates into tremendous revenue growth. This has occurred mostly by way of advertising space.

Blue Apron

Blue Apron is another major company in this sector. While it has spent the last few years losing revenue, that is starting to show signs of a reversal. This is a gourmet meal kit company that will send food right to the doorstep of the consumer. This is yet another way that a company is capitalizing on the fact that people are staying home more and are less willing to go out. Not everyone has the time or the knowledge to cook at home, so this is a concept that appears to be catching on. In the last quarter alone, Blue Apron has seen an increase in sales in the neighborhood of 10%. If this continues, then it is definitely a stock to look out for in early 2021.

Bumble

This is a technology stock that seems to be shunning the Corona Virus slump that many businesses find themselves in. In fact, the Bumble IPO might just be one of the hottest startups to invest in over the course of the coming year. According to Money Morning, “Bumble has been one of the winners of this post-pandemic economy”. That means you can count on this company to make some waves entering 2021. Bumble is essentially a dating app with a twist. They have created a unique spin on the sign-up process that users love. In the post-pandemic world, people will be looking for ways to meet new people without putting themselves out in massive crowds just to do so. Bumble appears to be on the cutting edge of taking advantage of this new movement, so it is an investment that you will want to consider making.

Invitation Homes

It seems that the trend of younger families and couples shunning the suburbs for urban areas is starting to reverse the other direction once again. However, home prices are often out of reach for this segment of the population. This has resulted in high demand for rental homes in areas across the country. Invitation Homes has capitalized on that and is buying up single-family homes at a record rate. They have been known to own as many as 5,000 homes in a city. This translates into enormous revenue growth in areas where the rental market is tight.

Teladoc Health and Livongo Health

With more and more people today turning to Telehealth as a way to see the doctor, it is not surprising that these two stocks are worth watching. In fact, these are two companies that have just recently joined forces. While these companies lost money last year, the fact that they are joining forces speaks well to the future. Look for revenue to increase substantially in the coming year.

These are just a few of the stocks to look out for in early 2021. You just want to make sure that any stock you choose fits within your overall investment strategy. You want to feel comfortable with the mix that you have in your portfolio, so take time in the coming months to determine what moves you want to make as the calendar gets ready to turn the page on another year.

Paris Teacher Attack: Nine Arrested After Grisly Beheading of History Teacher

France’s President Emmanuel Macron has called the beheading of a teacher in a north-western suburb of Paris an “Islamist terrorist attack”.

The teacher of history and geography is said to have shown controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to his pupils. The attacker was shot dead by police.

President Macron said the as yet unnamed victim was murdered because he “taught freedom of expression”.

“They won’t win… We will act,” the president said from the scene.

The attack occurred on October 15, at about 17:00 local time, near a school. Anti-terror prosecutors are investigating.

The knife-wielding attacker was shot as officers tried to arrest him in the aftermath of the attack. Police have not released any personal details about him, although French media report he was an 18-year-old man of Chechen origin who was born in Moscow.

A trial is currently under way in Paris over a 2015 Islamist assault on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which was targeted for publishing the cartoons.

Three weeks ago, a man attacked and wounded two people outside Charlie Hebdo‘s former offices.

A man wielding a large knife attacked the teacher in a street in the town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, cutting off his head. A police source said that witnesses had heard the attacker shout “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is Greatest”, the Reuters reported.

The attacker then ran off, but local police alerted by the public were quickly at the scene.

The officers confronted the man in the nearby district of Éragny.

When they shouted at him to give himself up, he is said to have threatened them. The officers shot him and he died a short time later.

The scene is now sealed off, as the investigation continues.

Nine people, including a minor, have been arrested, judicial sources have told French media. They reportedly include relatives of the attacker and parents of a child at the school where the teacher worked.

Why was Charlie Hebdo attacked?

Je suis Charlie: Who is behind viral slogan?

According to Le Monde newspaper, the victim had been talking in class about freedom of expression in connection with the Muhammad cartoons, which caused uproar among some Muslims when Charlie Hebdo published them.

He had reportedly advised Muslim students to leave the room if they thought they might be offended.

Earlier this month, some Muslim parents complained to the school about the teacher’s decision to use one or more of the cartoons as part of a discussion about the Charlie Hebdo trial, French media report.

Reacting to the attack, Charlie Hebdo tweeted: “Intolerance just reached a new threshold and seems to stop at nothing to impose terror in our country.”

France has seen a wave of Islamist violence since the 2015 attack on Charlie Hebdo that left 12 people dead, including famous cartoonists.

White House 2020: States Break Early Voting Records

A record numbers of voters casted their ballots ahead of Election Day on November 3, state election officials across the US have reported.

More than 22 million Americans had voted early by October 16, either in person or by mail, according to the US Election Project.

At the same point in the 2016 race, about 6 million votes had been cast.

According to experts, the surge in early voting correlates to the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused many people to seek alternatives to Election Day voting.

On October 13, Texas, a state that has relatively tight restrictions on who can qualify for postal voting, set a record for most ballots cast on the first day of early voting.

On October 12, the Columbus Day federal holiday, officials in Georgia reported126,876 votes cast – also a state record.

In Ohio, a crucial swing state, more than 2.3 million postal ballots have been requested, double the figure in 2016.

Reports indicate that registered Democrats have so far outvoted registered Republicans – casting more than double the number of ballots. And of these early voting Democrats, women and black Americans are voting in particularly high numbers. Some are motivated by dislike for President Donald Trump, while others have been energized by racial justice protests throughout the summer following the police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.

However, this early advantage does not mean that Democrats can already claim victory. Republicans, who claim postal voting is vulnerable to fraud, say Democrats may win the early vote, but that Republicans will show up in large numbers on Election Day.

According to a 2017 study by the Brennan Center for Justice, the rate of voting fraud overall in the US is between 0.00004% and 0.0009%.

The enormous numbers of voters have led to long queues, with some people waiting for up to 11 hours for an opportunity to vote.

Younger people, who historically have been difficult to get to the polls, appear to be turning out in larger numbers this year. The youth vote may be the highest it’s been since 2008 for the election of Barack Obama – the US’s first black president.

A recent survey by Axios found that four in ten university students said they planned to protest if President Trump wins. Six in ten said they would shame friends who could vote but choose not to.

By contrast, only 3% of surveyed students said they would protest if Joe Biden was elected.

Remdesivir Has Little to No Effect on Preventing Covid-19 Deaths, WHO Solidarity Trial Finds

Remdesivir has little to no effect on Covid-19 patients’ chances of survival, a WHO study on the anti-viral drug has found.

The WHO’s Solidarity clinical trial evaluated four potential medications for Covid-19, including hydroxychloroquine and remdesivir.

Remdesivir was among the first to be used to treat Covid-19, and was recently given to President Donald Trump when he was in hospital.

The company manufacturing the anti-viral drug, Gilead Sciences Inc., rejected the findings of the trial.

In a statement, Gilead said the findings of the study were “inconsistent” with others, and that it was “concerned” that the results have yet to be reviewed.

For the Solidarity clinical trial, the WHO tested the effects four potential treatments – remdesivir, an Ebola drug, was one, but they also looked at malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, auto-immune drug interferon, and the HIV drug combination of lopinavir and ritonavir.

Dexamethasone, a low-cost steroid now widely used on Covid patients in intensive care in many countries, was not included in this study.

The four drugs were tested with 11,266 adult patients in total, across 500 hospitals in more than 30 different countries.

The results, which are yet to be peer-reviewed, suggest that none of these treatments has a substantial effect on mortality or on the length of time spent in hospital, the WHO said on October 15.

Coronavirus: FDA Authorizes Ebola Drug Remdesivir for Treating Covid-19

Coronavirus: Dexamethasone Can Help Preventing Covid-19 Deaths

On October 14, WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said that their trials on hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir/ritonavir were stopped in June because they had already proven ineffective. However, the other trials continued.

The study’s results appear to contradict a previous study from earlier this month, conducted by Gilead, which concluded that treatment with remdesivir cut Covid recovery time by five days compared to patients given a placebo. About 1,000 patients took part in that trial.

Gilead dismissed the findings, saying in a statement: “The emerging (WHO) data appears inconsistent, with more robust evidence from multiple randomized, controlled studies published in peer-reviewed journals validating the clinical benefit of remdesivir.

“We are concerned the data from this open-label global trial has not undergone the rigorous review required to allow for constructive scientific discussion, particularly given the limitations of the trial design.”

Remdesivir was given emergency use authorization in the US from the FDA on May 1and has since been authorized for use in several other countries.

How Doctors Help Children in Hospice

0

Hospice is specialized medical care for those with a life-threatening illness, typically reserved for patients expected to live a year or less who have lessened or stopped curative treatments. Of course, the prognosis isn’t always accurate and can be even harder to predict in children as they generally have healthier organ systems, and some may get better, even “graduating” from hospice as their health improves and it’s no longer required.

Unfortunately, hospice care for children is underutilized – of the approximately 44,000 pediatric deaths a year, according to a 2014 study, “Who are the children using hospice care?” fewer than 10% of children utilize it for end of life care. Children’s hospice is a bit different than it is for older adults. While relieving pain and managing symptoms is the focus, helping to improve quality of life, children may also receive curative treatments and receive care from various providers too.

The Hospice Care Team

A board-certified physician with training in pediatrics is part of the hospice care team. The doctor may have another area of specialty, too, such as oncology or neonatology. He or she typically works in coordination with the child’s other physicians and healthcare providers and will provide insight into managing symptoms like pain, nausea. or difficulty breathing. The doctor’s role is to also guide the team in understanding the medical aspects of the child’s condition.

Other team members usually include a nurse who helps to manage pain and other symptoms along with home health aides who are trained in hospice care and can assist with daily care needs.

A social worker is likely to be on hand to help the child and family members cope with emotional and other issues related to their condition, while a grief counselor can provide education for members of the family on loss and grief. There may be others such as art and music therapists, rehab therapists, nutritionists, and psychologists helping too. The team as a whole helps both the child and family caregivers cope with the challenges of the illness and focus on emotional support.

Helping to Determine the Level of Pain and Where It’s Coming From

Children, especially young children, often have difficulty explaining their pain, including how much it hurts and where it is. A hospice doctor and other team members use techniques specific to children, such as body language and special charts to determine how bad the pain is and to identify where it’s coming from.

Providing the Appropriate Pain Relief

It’s more difficult to provide medicine that will treat pain and other symptoms in children as their bodies are smaller, and they process it differently. Many can’t swallow pills. A hospice doctor understands which medicine to prescribe in the right doses while recommending ways the child can take it, such as pills that dissolve on the tongue, liquids, or special patches.

Helping Children Understand Their Illness and Medical Care

Depending on the child’s age, many don’t understand their illness or why they need tests and medicines. The doctor and other hospice team members can help the child understand what they’re going through in an age-appropriate way. They can also recommend ways for the child to express his or her feelings, such as through art, music, or play.

Barron Trump Had Covid-19, First Lady Confirms

President Donald Trump’s son Barron had Covid-19 but has since tested negative, First Lady Melania Trump revealed.

Melania Trump said her “fear came true” when 14-year-old Barron tested positive for the new coronavirus.

However, the first lady said, “luckily he is a strong teenager and exhibited no symptoms”.

Both the president and first lady also tested positive for coronavirus – as well as other White House staff – but have since recovered.

At a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, President Trump said: “He [Barron] had it for such a short period of time.”

The president said his son had had a mild case of the virus: “I don’t even think he knew he had it because they’re young and their immune systems are strong and they fight it off.”

He added: “Barron is beautiful and he is free.”

President Trump cited his son’s recovery as a reason why American schools should reopen as soon as possible, a move opposed by teachers’ unions who fear their members could be infected by students.

He told the crowd: “Barron’s tested positive. Within, like, two seconds it was Barron is just fine now. He’s tested negative, right?

“Because it happens. People have it and it goes. Get the kids back to school.”

Melania Trump revealed Barron’s positive test result in an essay entitled “My Personal Experience with Covid-19” on the White House website.

After the first lady and the president received their positive results two weeks ago, she said “naturally, my mind went immediately to our son”.

Melania Trump said it was a “great relief” when Barron initially tested negative, but was concerned he would later test positive for the virus.

“My fear came true when he was tested again and it came up positive,” she said, adding that Barron exhibited no symptoms.

“In one way I was glad the three of us went through this at the same time so we could take care of one another and spend time together,” the first lady wrote.

Melania Trump also reflected on her own diagnosis. She said she experienced a “roller coaster of symptoms”, including body aches, a cough and fatigue.

“I chose to go a more natural route in terms of medicine, opting more for vitamins and healthy food,” she wrote.

In her statement, Melania Trump also said the “most impactful part” of her recovery was “the opportunity to reflect on many things – family, friendships, my work, and staying true to who you are”.

She said she would be resuming her duties as soon as she could.

While the first lady remained in the White House, President Trump spent three days at Maryland’s Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after his own Covid-19 diagnosis. He received a number of different drug treatments, including dexamethasone, a steroid, antiviral treatment remdesivir and monoclonal antibody therapy.

The president’s personal doctor said on October 11 that he was no longer a Covid transmission risk to others, and he returned to the campaign trail on October 12, telling supporters he felt “powerful”.

Melissa Earnest’s Defense of Barron Trump Becomes Viral

An event at the White House on September 26, for the unveiling of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, was thought to be the root of the localized outbreak of coronavirus.

The White House press secretary, former Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway and two senators were among the people around the president who tested positive for the virus.

Opinion polls suggest President Trump is trailing his Democratic opponent Joe Biden barely three weeks before the November 3 presidential election, but polling is close in several key states.

Joe Biden did not have any public campaign events on October 14, but held a virtual fundraiser and delivered taped remarks to an American Muslim association. The Biden campaign announced that it had raised a record-breaking $383 million in September.

The Democrat was expected to spend much of the day preparing for October 15, when he and President Trump will take part in rival televised town hall-style events.

The two candidates have struck different tones on the pandemic, with President Trump downplaying its severity and Joe Biden criticizing him for not encouraging Americans to wear masks and social distance.

The US has recorded more than 7.8 million coronavirus cases and more than 215,000 deaths – the highest figures of any country in the world.

Joe Biden has criticized President Donald Trump’s handling of Covid-19, while courting elderly voters in the key battleground state of Florida.

The Democratic presidential nominee told them that the president saw seniors, who have been more at risk in the pandemic, as “expendable”.

There are sharp policy differences between the two candidates on Covid-19.

In Pennsylvania, President Trump told thousands of supporters he felt like “Superman” after his Covid treatment.

He tested positive for the virus on October 1, spent three nights in hospital and was cleared by doctors to return to the campaign trail at the weekend, holding his first rally in Florida on October 12.

Battleground states like Florida and Pennsylvania are crucial for gathering the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the presidential election, which is not determined by a simple count of votes nationwide.

Opinion polls suggest Joe Biden has a 10-point advantage over Donald Trump nationally, but his lead in some key states is narrower. In Florida, the Democrat is 3.7 percentage points ahead, according to an average of polls collated by Real Clear Politics.

Presidential Debate 2020: Donald Trump and Joe Biden Clash in Bitter Debate

President Trump narrowly won Florida in 2016 in a result buoyed by senior voters. But the latest polls suggest a shift away from the Republican among them this time around.

Joe Biden spoke to a group of people at a community centre for seniors in southern Florida, with social distancing measures in place.

The event was in stark contrast to the president’s mass rally on Monday in Florida.

The Democratic candidate accused the president of dismissing the threat that coronavirus posed to senior citizens.

He said: “You’re expendable, you’re forgettable, you’re virtually nobody. That’s how he sees seniors. That’s how he sees you.”

The “only senior Donald Trump seems to care about” is himself, he added.

Joe Biden also criticized President Trump for holding “super-spreader parties with Republicans hugging each other without concern of the consequences”, while senior citizens couldn’t see their grandchildren. A recent White House event for the Supreme Court nominee led to several attendees testing positive for Covid.

Introducing Joe Biden at the Florida event, congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said it was voters aged 65 or over who would “swing elections in the Sunshine State”.

Joe Biden, 77, and Donald Trump, 74, are the two oldest candidates to contest a US presidential election.

However, President Trump has regularly mocked Joe Biden as a senior citizen who lacks energy and is “sleepy”. On October 13, the president tweeted a doctored image of Joe Biden as a wheelchair-user and the words “Biden for Resident”, implying a nursing home.

Coronavirus: China to Test Whole City of Qingdao in Five Days

The entire population of the Chinese city of Qingdao will be tested for Covid-19 over a period of five days.

The 9 million population testing comes after a dozen cases were found linked back to a hospital treating coronavirus patients arriving from overseas.

In May, China tested the entire city of Wuhan – home to 11 million people and the epicenter of the global pandemic.

China has largely brought the virus under control.

That’s in stark contrast to other parts of the world where there are still high case numbers and lockdown restrictions of varying severity.

In a statement posted to Chinese social media site Weibo, Qingdao’s Municipal Health Commission said six new cases and six asymptomatic cases had been discovered.

According to the Global Times, all the cases were linked to the same hospital.

China now has a strategy of mass testing even when a new coronavirus cluster appears to be relatively minor.

Qingdao’s commission added that a citywide testing program had been launched, with five districts to be tested within three days – and the whole city to be tested within five days.

Some 114,862 people – including medical staff and newly hospitalized patients in the city’s hospitals – have already tested negative for the coronavirus, it said.

Videos circulating online showed local residents lining up on October 11 to get tested, said the Global Times, adding that some of these test points were open from 7AM to 11PM.

The new cases come a week after China’s Golden Week holiday – which saw millions travel across the country.

A Global Times report quoting the Qingdao Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism said the city had received 4.47 million passenger trips over this period.

The nearby city of Jinan, which is also in the same province as Qingdao, called for anyone who had visited the city since September 23 to get tested for the virus, according to a report by The Paper.

Earlier last month, Qingdao announced that two port workers in the city who handled imported seafood had tested positive for the virus. However, they were not known to have infected anyone else.

Daily coronavirus infections have fallen drastically in China, and for the most part the country appears to have recovered from the worst of the virus.

China currently has 85,578 virus cases and the death toll stands at 4,634.

Earlier this year, China completed a mass testing program in Wuhan saying 11 million people had been tested in 10 days.

Second Presidential Debate: President Trump Refuses to Take Part in Virtual Debate

The commission organizing the second presidential debate in Miami on October 15 said it would have to take place remotely after President Donald Trump tested positive for coronavirus.

President Trump has refused to take part in a virtual TV debate with his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

The president’s refusal sparked a day of wrangling about how and when any further debates would take place.

At the moment it appears a debate could take place on October 22, although in what form remains to be seen.

The first presidential debate on September 29 had descended into insults and interruptions. The vice-presidential debate, held on October 7 between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, was a far more measured affair.

Latest opinion polls suggest Joe Biden has a high single digit lead nationally, but the outcome is often decided in battleground states where the races can be much closer.

Six million votes have already been cast in early voting.

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced that candidates would take part in the Miami debate “from separate remote locations… to protect the health and safety of all involved”.

This infuriated the president who, in a phone-in interview with Fox Business Channel, said he was “not gonna waste my time” on a virtual debate and “sit behind a computer, ridiculous”.

Joe Biden said the president “changed his mind every second” and his campaign team added that Donald Trump “clearly does not want to face questions from the voters”.

The Trump campaign answered back, with manager Bill Stepien calling the commission’s decision to “rush to Joe Biden’s defense… pathetic” and saying President Trump would hold a rally instead on October 15.

The Biden team then proposed the town-hall style debate, set for Miami, should go ahead on October 22 instead.

This brought a brief moment of agreement, on the date at least.

However, the Trump team said there should be a third face-to-face debate – on October 29, just five days before polling.

The Biden team refused. Three dates had been set for debates – September 29, October 15 and October 22. That would be it.

VP Debate 2020: Kamala Harris and Mike Pence Clash over Coronavirus Pandemic

Presidential Debate 2020: Donald Trump and Joe Biden Clash in Bitter Debate

On October 15, Joe Biden will now take part in his own primetime event on ABC answering questions from voters.

Quite what format any Biden-Trump debate takes now is hard to pin down.

The president touched on a number of key matters, including his health and the possibility of movement towards a stimulus package for the economy.

On his health, President Trump said: “I’m back because I’m a perfect physical specimen.”

He said he had stopped taking most “therapeutics” but was still taking steroids and would be tested for Covid again “soon”.

Although his doctor has said he now has no symptoms, questions still remain about when the president first became infected and whether he could still be contagious.

And although the names of many people who have interacted with the president and tested positive are now known, it remains unclear just how many were exposed at the White House. New Covid safety measures are in place there.

One of the top Republicans, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, said on October 8 that he had not been to the White House since August 6 because its approach to handling Covid with social distancing and masks was “different from mine and what I suggested we do in the Senate”.

October 8, President Trump said that “somebody got in and people got infected” but gave no more details.

A gathering on September 26 announcing President Trump’s Supreme Court pick has been seen as a possible “super-spreader” event, with several attendees known to have tested positive.

Does A Cable TV Use Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is a calculation of the frequencies used by whichever medium they are being consumed. When it comes to broadcast, especially when compressed, digital TV streams are more powerful than analog ones. This tends to work even though, says UFC, many people on a common cable TV distribution viewing the same show at the same time. On one frequency category also known as a channel, the provider will transmit and all the subscription receivers on that node are tuned to the center frequency of the channel. One source, numerous receivers.

Speaking of cables predominantly, bandwidth is usually referred to as the selection of frequencies that are used for transferring the information over data cables. The wide-ranging the bandwidth the more amount of data it can carry. The standard parameter for measuring bandwidth is cycles per second or Hertz (Hz). Some top-notch cable TV service providers in the US including spectrum TV assure their bandwidth remains intact irrespective of the number of people using it simultaneously.

If you only want to know “You having broadband access and cable television, my access is impacted by utilizing TV,” the answer would be: No. Although some cable TV’s capacity in your home is potentially used, the bandwidth is not the restraining factor for your internet access thus far. Cable TV does consume a part of your bandwidth, but then again it could be deemed as a comparatively smaller share of the bandwidth. For the reason that this is broadcast, and the cable signal for every station is transmitted once and for all the consumers to get it.

If you particularly want to know, “Does cable television broadcast use space that would only be reserved by the internet,” when you searched for ‘Does cable TV use bandwidth?’ the answer is going to be: yes. Cable TV does consume a majority of the bandwidth of the network but should be reckoned as a comparatively smaller part of the bandwidth. The cable signals for every channel is only pushed once when it is transmitted, and all viewers access it simultaneously. However, if both viewers simultaneously were viewing the same TV programs on a streaming service i.e. Netflix, the degree would be greater with the overall bandwidth accessed on the network.

However, on the cable TV system, they do consume the bandwidth. But content providers such as Netflix do have not the same advantage. And if you and your neighbor are watching the same thing from the same internet service provider at the same time, you’re both still having your own Netflix data stream. Fortunately, modern internet service provider’s mechanisms are so fast that much of the time the link is possibly idle, facilitating reuse of the frequency. This ensures that the same data stream from your ISP is processed from both your neighbor’s modem and your modem (i.e. cable, not DSL). Your modem only receives packages sent to it and disregards everything for your neighbors. Moreover, Wi-Fi also functions (simplistically speaking) in a similar manner.

Thus, the frequency of bandwidth that is needed to transfer one analog audio-video one-track stream will provide many consumers with a high speed of the internet. This depends, of course, on the high-speed broadband requirements along with the physical state of the networks. One of the many benefits of modern broadcasting (not the web) is that it transmits the material that is being viewed. If nobody is actually watching MTV on your delivery node, so it may not be passed on, and will not be until anyone updates the station and demands the particular video & audio streaming from their device. When the station is changed again, it no longer needs the content stream down the node, and the sending finishes. It means that a TV network like the cable system will sell thousands of channels which includes names like ABC, central comedy, NBC, but at any given time there will usually only be a few hundred participating subscriber recipients on the node.

Conclusive Notes

The aforementioned discussion specifies that cable TV at its maximum uses a few hundred channels to transmit the stations needed by such receivers. For other forms of data, internet-based data often needs validation, which means there must also be an upstream link. The simplest reply to the title is yes, cable TV does consume a small portion of bandwidth.
