Barack Obama to ask Congress to end NSA phone data collection

President Barack Obama is planning to ask Congress to end bulk collection of US phone records by the National Security Agency (NSA).

NSA senior officials told the New York Times the agency would “end its systematic collection of data about Americans’ calling habits”.

Phone records would instead remain with telecoms companies, only to be accessed by government when needed.

It follows widespread anger at home and abroad after leaks revealed the full extent of US surveillance operations.

The documents – leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden – revealed that the US collects massive amounts of electronic data from communications of private individuals around the world, and has spied on foreign leaders.

In a speech in January, Barack Obama said it was necessary for the US to continue collecting large amounts of data, but that civil liberties must be respected.

He said the current system, in which the NSA collects the details of the times, numbers and durations of phone calls, known as metadata, would come to an end.

According to the New York Times report, Barack Obama told the US justice department and intelligence officials to come up with a plan by March 28.

Under the new proposal, officials say surveillance “would require phone companies to swiftly provide records in a technologically compatible data format, including making available, on a continuing basis, data about any new calls placed or received after the order is received”.

The phone companies would not be required to hold on to the data for longer than they normally would, the New York Times says.

The NSA currently holds information for five years, whereas telecoms companies are required by federal regulation to retain customer records for 18 months.

The new proposal “would retain a judicial role in determining whether the standard of suspicion was met for a particular phone number before the NSA could obtain associated records”, the newspaper adds.

The Obama administration plans to renew the current NSA program for at least another 90 days until Congress passes the new legislation.

New legislation has also been developed separately by leaders of the House intelligence committee that would allow the NSA to issue subpoenas for specific phone records without prior judicial approval, the New York Times reports.

The New York Times report does not provide information on possible changes to the NSA’s surveillance of phone records from other countries.

Top 10 Male Addictions in the U.S. Today

0

The definition of addiction is not always agreed upon among professionals. In general it would be any type of behavior that becomes compulsive and interferes with an individual’s daily life. Building a tolerance and needing more of whatever activities or substances are being used is often a substantial element of addictions. Finally, losing control over the behavior is the hallmark of an addiction. The following are 10 prevalent addictions affecting men in the United States and all 10 addictions have available treatment support in rehabs for men.

Alcohol
Men are twice as likely as women to be addicted to alcohol. It also takes men approximately five years longer than women to seek help for an alcohol addiction.

Top-10-Male-Addictions

Smoking
According to the CDC approximately 20 percent of men in the United States smoke cigarettes. The number of men who smoke by age group is fairly evenly divided.

Drugs
While drug addiction covers a wide range of prescription and street drugs, the most commonly abused drug is marijuana. Painkillers appear to be the prescription drug of choice for men and women.

Gambling
Between 15 and 20 million adults have a gambling problem. The majority are men. Research indicates that men tend to be “action” gamblers, preferring games like poker that take a certain amount of skill. Women, however, are more likely to be “escape” gamblers and participate in games based on luck.

Pornography
Studies have revealed that the same brain changes that occur in drug addicts occur in those addicted to pornography. Men between the ages of 18 and 24 make up the largest percentage of men using pornography on a regular basis.

Cell Phone
Nomophobia is the official term for anxiety if there isn’t access to mobile technology. Nearly 47 percent of men have two phones. If a guy constantly checks his phone before getting out of bed each morning or can’t get through the first course in a restaurant without texting, there may be a problem.

Work
This is a tough addiction to pinpoint since a hardworking man is often viewed as successful. About 25 percent of American men work more than 50 hours each week. While working long hours is not necessarily a problem, when it interferes with health or personal relationships it may qualify as an addiction.

Sex
Sex addictions are not the same as addictions to pornography. One is primarily living in a fantasy world while the other is actually having sex with another person. About 8 percent of men in the United States suffer from this affliction.

Internet/Social Media
While online addictions are often connected to other addictions such as porn and gambling, constantly visiting places like Facebook and Twitter can also become a problem. Men may be especially susceptible to social media addiction because it’s an easy way for them to connect to others while still remaining disconnected on a certain level.

Food
Yes, men can struggle with food addictions, though usually not as much as women. Like so many other addictions, the release of dopamine in the brain is the driving influence behind this behavior.

While women’s addictions seem to be more severe, men are more likely to become addicts. Men are also less likely to seek help for their addictive behavior.

3 Trending Unknown Industries Worth Checking Into

The economy is always experiencing phases where this or that industry begins to emerge as a major source of jobs. This can be because a new technological advancement gives rise to the need for a new career type. It can also mean that an industry is simply generating a lot of consumer demand. Often it is useful to research which industries are experiencing an uptrend both for getting a head start on a new job or even for investment purposes. Here are three trending industries that may deserve a closer look.

 3-Trending-Unknown-Industries

In the realm of hazardous chemicals and biological materials there exists the need for biorepositories and laboratory moving services. A Biorepository is a place where biological material is dealt with. This could include storage of biological materials, processing, and even proper distribution of such products and specimens. In the case where biological materials need to be transported in mass, the need for laboratory moving services becomes essential. These moving services need to have trained staff who comply with the regulatory measures imposed on the transport of hazardous chemicals and infectious biological agents. They must also have the proper temperature controlled refrigerated containers and back up refrigerator units to facilitate the proper and safe storage of specimens during transport. This industry may involve a hint of danger, but there are certainly exciting career possibilities to be considered.

Data Infrastructure Services are often overlooked facilities where private and public cloud services are housed will be a growing industry in 2014. The cloud infrastructure is home to much of the digital applications being developed, stored, and accessed by mobile devices, such as smart phones, tablets, and phablets. As more mobile devices increase demand for cloud services in the industry, this creates a greater need for more data centers and cloud infrastructure. The expansion of new data centers translates to more positions needing to be filled. Management, software engineers, and sales representatives will be among the many key positions needing to be filled by qualified applicants as this trend of infrastructure expansion occurs and business continues to pick up.

Perhaps one industry people do not take much time to think about is the role played by materials engineers. Every product we use is made of materials. Materials have specific properties that are often studied and manipulated to determine their range of use. Materials engineers spend countless hours playing and experimenting with various materials to figure out these properties and where they are most useful. Usually, a materials engineer will specialize in an area, such as metals, plastics, or ceramics just to name a few. Many times materials engineers are dealing with substances at the atomic level, trying to figure out how to manipulate atomic structures to produce new and exciting properties. As long as companies continue to create innovative products with new substances that exhibit exotic properties, this industry will continue to positively trend.

Catching an unknown industry as it is trending can often involve a lot of investigation and research. However, being able to determine if demand, product sales, and employment in an industry is increasing or not are sometimes indicators that an industry is on an up or down swing. Sometimes, only time can tell for certain what industries were trending in which direction.

Gwar’s frontman Dave Brockie has been found dead at his Virginia home at the age of 50.

Officers were called to a home in Richmond, Virginia, on Sunday evening to a report of a dead person, said Dionne Waugh, a spokesperson for local police.

When police arrived, Dave Brockie was found dead inside the home.

Dionne Waugh said the medical examiner’s officer would determine the cause of death but foul play is not suspected.

On Monday, a picture of Dave Brockie was posted on the heavy metal band’s official website, along with the dates of his birth and death.

Search for missing Malaysia Airlines jet suspended due to bad weather

0

The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has been suspended because of bad weather, Australian officials say.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said high winds and rain meant planes could not fly safely.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says satellite data showed the plane ended its journey in remote seas west of Australia.

In Beijing relatives of passengers clashed with police outside Malaysia’s embassy, as China asked to see data on which Malaysia’s conclusion was based.

About 200 relatives marched to the diplomatic mission, with scuffles breaking out as they confronted security personnel.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared on March 8 as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. It was carrying a total of 239 people, including 153 Chinese nationals.

A multinational search effort has focused on seas some 1,500 miles to the southwest of the Australian city of Perth.

In a news conference late on Monday, Malaysian PM Najib Razak said it had to be concluded “with deep sadness and regret” that according to new data “flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean”.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said: “We do not know why, we do not know how this terrible tragedy happened.”

But he added: “The announcement made last night and shared with families is the reality that we must now accept.”

The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has been suspended because of bad weather
The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has been suspended because of bad weather

Malaysia Airlines Chairman Mohammed Nor Yusof described the situation as “an unprecedented event requiring an unprecedented response”.

“The investigation under way may yet prove to be even longer and more complex than it has been since March 8,” he said.

“But we will continue to support the families as we have done throughout, and to support the authorities as the search for definitive answers continues.”

Planes from several nations have been scouring waters far off Perth for signs of the missing plane, in a search co-ordinated by Australia.

There have been several sightings of debris, but none have yet been confirmed as linked to the plane.

In its statement, AMSA said it had undertaken a risk assessment “and determined that the current weather conditions would make any air and sea search activities hazardous and pose a risk to crew”.

“Therefore, AMSA has suspended all sea and air search operations for today due to these weather conditions,” it said.

Australia’s Defense Minister David Johnston said search efforts were unlikely to start again for “at least another 24 hours”.

David Johnston described the search as a “massive logistical exercise” in an “extremely remote” part of the world.

Mark Binskin, vice-chief of the Australian Defense Force, said: “We’re not searching for a needle in a haystack. We’re still trying to define where the haystack is.”

China, meanwhile, has asked Malaysia to hand over the data that led it to conclude the plane had flown into the sea.

“We demand the Malaysian side state the detailed evidence that leads them to this judgement as well as supply all the relevant information and evidence about the satellite data analysis,” Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Xie Hangsheng said, according to a statement on the ministry’s website.

“The search and rescue work cannot stop now. We demand the Malaysian side continue to finish all the work including search and rescue,” he added.

Washington landslide death toll climbs to 14 with up to 176 missing

Washington authorities have found six more bodies after Saturday’s huge landslide, bringing the number known to have been killed to 14, say police.

Officials now say as many as 176 people may remain unaccounted for after the 177ft wall of mud hit near the town of Oso, north of Seattle.

Search crews have worked day and night, using helicopters and laser imaging.

Officials admit they have little hope of finding survivors.

President Barack Obama has declared an emergency in Washington State and ordered federal authorities to co-ordinate the disaster relief effort.

Speaking earlier after surveying the area from the air, Washington Governor Jay Inslee said it was “devastation beyond imagination”.

Jay Inslee said the slide “basically cut a mountain in two” and deposited it on the town below. Nothing in the path of the slide was still standing.

“It’s that absolute devastation that causes us all real pain,” he said.

Family members and volunteers were using chainsaws and their bare hands to shift the wreckage and try to find those missing.

At a news conference on Monday evening, Snohomish County emergency management director John Pennington said the official list of the missing stood at 176.

But he said he did not think the final death toll would be so high, because some of those listed as unaccounted for would be found to be alive, and other names would prove to be duplicates.

But he said authorities no longer expected to find survivors in the debris.

“We as a community, we as a county, are beginning to realize that we are moving toward a recovery operation,” John Pennington said.

“There is an awful lot of grieving.”

The landslide left behind a cliff known as a head scarp 600ft high, Washington state geologist Dave Norman told reporters on Monday afternoon.

Authorities have continued their search-and-rescue operations amid a tangled, water-logged field of mud and debris, using rescue dogs, aerial photography and laser imaging to help the search.

Officials said the conditions were treacherous, and the threat of further landslides on Monday forced the authorities to pull rescue workers back from the scene briefly until scientists determined there was no further risk.

More than 30 homes were destroyed and more than half the town of Oso is missing – a recent census put its population at 180.

The landslide cut off the city of Darrington and clogged the north fork of the Stillaguamish River.

Flight MH370: Malaysia Airlines officials defend SMS notification of family members

0

Malaysia Airlines officials defended their handling of the notification of family members on the presumed final fate of missing Flight MH370.

At a press conference held in Kuala Lumpur airport, Malaysia Airlines Group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya first gave his condolences to the family members of the passengers and noted: “It must be remembered that 13 of our own colleagues were also on board.”

Regarding the text messages that some relatives got from the airline on Monday, Jauhari Yahya said Malaysia Airlines’ “sole motivation” was to make sure the victims’ families “heard the news before the world did”.

“Wherever humanly possible, we did so in person with the families or by telephone, using SMS as the last resort,” Jauhari Yahya said.

Malaysia Airlines officials also said that preparations were being made to provide the families with more than the $5,000 they were already set to receive as compensation, and to shuttle families to the recovery zone in Australia when possible.

Malaysian officials also noted some 40 extra “caregivers” have been trained to assist the passengers’ families.

Australian officials earlier had said that visas for family members looking to be as close to the search zone as possible would be expedited.

Meanwhile, when asked if they would resign in the wake of the handling of the investigation, Malaysia Airlines officials said they were considering it, but it was a personal decision.

Brazil World Cup 2014: Porto Alegre may drop out

0

Mayor of Brazilian city Porto Alegre, Jose Fortunati, says his city may drop out of June’s football World Cup if key legislation is not approved this week.

Mayor Jose Fortunati told a local Radio Gaucha that “there was no plan B” to find much-needed extra funding.

He says a bill creating tax breaks for companies investing in temporary structures for the tournament must be voted on Tuesday.

The Brazil World Cup starts on June 12 but some cities are behind schedule.

Porto Alegre’s Beira Rio stadium is nearly ready, but it still needs temporary structures to house the media, sponsors and other requirements by the world football governing body, FIFA.

The outside of the stadium in the southern Brazil city, due to host five matches, including fixtures with France, Holland and Argentina, is still unfinished.

However, in an interview with local Radio Gaucha, Jose Fortunati said he was more worried about the temporary structures.

“If the project is not voted, we won’t have the World Cup in Porto Alegre. There’s no Plan B, nor C nor Z,” he warned.

The legislation that allows tax exemptions to firms that invest in the structures was poised to be voted by the Rio Grande do Sul state legislative assembly on Tuesday.

The authorities are not allowed to use public money in structures that will not be used after the World Cup.

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said on Friday that delays were most worrying in Sao Paulo’s Arena Corinthians – set to host the opening match – and in Porto Alegre’s Beira Rio, just under three months before the tournament.

Venezuela revokes Maria Corina Machado’s Congress mandate

Venezuela has stripped leading opposition congresswoman Maria Corina Machado of her mandate after she spoke before the Organization of American States (OAS) last week.

Maria Corina Machado had been invited by Panama to give her account of the recent wave of unrest in Venezuela.

But Venezuela’s authorities say Maria Corina Machado “acted as a Panamanian official” by accepting the invitation.

The decision means Maria Corina Machado will lose her parliamentary immunity and could be prosecuted for “inciting violence”.

More than 30 people have died since mid-February in demonstrations against high inflation, food shortages and violence levels.

Venezuela’s National Assembly’s president, Diosdado Cabello, said Maria Corina Machado had contravened the constitution.

Diosdado Cabello also said Maria Corina Machado was introduced at the OAS meeting in Washington DC as an “alternate ambassador” to Panama.

“Maybe the Panamanian government will now name her permanent ambassador,” he added.

Arriving in Peru’s capital, Lima, for a seminar at an institution presided by the 2010 Nobel Prize winning author Mario Vargas Llosa, Maria Corina Machado accused Diosdado Cabello of running a “dictatorship in the National Assembly”.

Maria Corina Machado wrote later on Twitter: “Mr. Cabello: I am a Congresswoman at the National Assembly so long as the people of Venezuela want it.”

She also said she was prepared to deal with the consequences of her actions.

“If the price that I must pay for having gone to the OAS so that the voice of the Venezuelan people could be heard is that I’m being persecuted today, in what they’re doing to me now, I will pay for it one and a million times.”

On Saturday, President Nicolas Maduro had already referred to Maria Corina Machado as “former congresswoman”.

Maria Corina Machado has been openly demanding the resignation of Nicolas Maduro since the start of the recent protests.

Venezuela’s government accuses “right-wing fascists” of inciting the unrest as part of a plot to overthrow the government.

Russia and Ukraine hold first talks since Crimea annexation

Russia and Ukraine are holding talks for the first time since Russia’s move into Crimea triggered a diplomatic crisis.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says his country is unfazed by the prospect of being expelled from the G8.

Other members of the group of industrialized countries have agreed not to hold a planned summit in Russia.

The move comes as Ukrainian troops are leaving Crimea after Russian forces seized military bases in the region.

Earlier this month, Russia annexed Crimea after a referendum considered illegal by Kiev and the West.

Sergei Lavrov met Ukraine’s interim Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsia on the sidelines on a security summit in The Hague on Monday.

“We set forth our vision to establish good national dialogue taking into account all residents of Ukraine,” Sergei Lavrov told a news conference.

He also said he saw “no great tragedy” if Moscow was expelled from the Group of Eight (G8) club of leading nations for its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula.

“If our Western partners think that this format has outlived itself, then so be it. At the very least, we are not trying to cling on to this format,” he told reporters.

The remaining members of the powerful body, who also met on the sidelines of the nuclear summit, agreed that the planned G8 summit in Russia would be called off because Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine.

Several G8 members have also called for Russia’s membership of the group to be suspended.

Secretary of State John Kerry also met Sergei Lavrov on Monday and expressed “strong concern” about the massing of Russian forces on the Ukrainian border, Reuters quoted a senior US state department official as saying.

“A Bun’dle of love!”

Though Stacy Keibler, 34, has known Jared Pobre, 39, for more than five years, the pair didn’t start dating until fall 2013, after she split from George Clooney last summer.

Stacy Keibler dated George Clooney, 51, for two years, attending numerous red carpets on his arm.

News of the pregnancy is as surprising as Stacy Keibler’s impromptu wedding on March 8.

Stacy Keibler and tech entrepreneur Jared Pobre simply told their families about a surprise Mexican vacation. Once their loved ones arrived, the couple revealed plans for a “rogue wedding” a source said.

In an interview for Ok Magazine a friend of the couple revealed that yes, indeed a baby, or babies were on the way.

“Ashton and Mila feel like they won the baby lottery,” a friend of the couple told the March 31 issue of OK magazine.

“It was a total shock for both of them, but they feel up for the challenge. It didn’t seem like it was possible for them to fall any deeper in love, but the prospect of raising an insta-family together has solidified their commitment to each other.”

Mila Kunis was photographed just last month wearing a massive diamond ring while out shopping with her mom at the Grove shopping center in LA, and a source confirmed to E!Online that Ashton Kutcher had indeed popped the question to make their romance legit.

Washington mudslide: 108 names on list of missing people

At least 108 people are reported missing or unaccounted for after Saturday’s huge landslide in the north-western Washington.

Eight bodies have been recovered so far after the 177ft deep wall of mud swept near the town of Oso, about 55 miles north of Seattle.

Search crews have worked day and night, using helicopters in the dangerous conditions that destroyed 30 homes.

Several people, including an infant, were critically injured.

Snohomish County emergency management director John Pennington said the figure did not necessarily represent the total number of injuries or fatalities.

John Pennington said the list had been consolidated from a number of sources.

Authorities have continued their search-and-rescue operations amid a tangled debris field that Washington Governor Jay Inslee labeled “a square mile of total devastation”.

The landslide cut off the city of Darrington and clogged the north fork of the Stillaguamish River.

This prompted fears of severe flooding downstream if the build-up of water behind the debris breaks through suddenly.

The authorities say the landslide was caused by recent heavy rain.

The area has had problems in the past with unstable land.

Reeva Steenkamp scared of Oscar Pistorius, text messages shown in court reveal

Oscar Pistorius trial in Pretoria has heard today that his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp sent him a text message saying: “I’m scared of you sometimes.”

The message was sent after Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp had a row when he accused her of flirting with another man – weeks before he shot her dead.

A police captain has been testifying about the couple’s mobile phones.

Oscar Pistorius denies deliberately killing his girlfriend of three months, saying he thought she was an intruder.

The trial has now entered is fourth week, with the prosecution expected to wrap up its case before Friday.

Capt Francois Moller said he had been able to extract some 35,000 pages’ worth of messages from Reeva Steenkamp’s phone.

He told the court on Monday that 90% of the messages between the couple were loving, but he had picked out exceptions.

Oscar Pistorius has said he has forgotten the password to his iPhone and investigators went to the US shortly before the trial began to meet Apple officials to try and gain access to it.

Reeva Steenkamp sent Oscar Pistorius a text message saying she was scared of him

In one message sent on January 27, 2013, Reeva Steenkamp wrote: “I’m scared of you sometimes and how you snap at me and of how you react to me.”

Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp had attended an engagement dinner and left abruptly.

In another message she wrote: “I can’t be attacked by outsiders for dating you and be attacked by you – the one person I deserve protection from.”

Reeva Steenkamp’s messages paint a picture of the athlete as a jealous and possessive boyfriend.

Earlier, one of Oscar Pistorius’ neighbors said she had heard both a man and woman scream on Valentine’s Day 2013.

Anette Stipp, whose husband gave evidence earlier in the trial, said she heard the screams and gunshots at around 0300 local time on the day of the shooting.

She said she heard two groups of gunshots with a woman screaming in between.

Anette Stipp testimony has closely matched that of other neighbors and witnesses, including her husband.

The defense has previously claimed that Oscar Pistorius screams like a woman and that neighbors had confused his screams with those of Reeva Steenkamp.

“It was a definitely a woman screaming,” said Anette Stipp.

She also said that the light was on in the bathroom cubicle, where Reeva Steenkamp was when she was shot.

This contradicts evidence given by Oscar Pistorius, who said that it was “pitch dark” where the shooting took place.

On Sunday the trial was extended and will now run until the middle of May. It had been due to end this week.

The prosecution says it will call upon four more witnesses before closing its case.

The defense team, led by Barry Roux, will then call upon its own witnesses, including Oscar Pistorius himself.

Last week the trial heard evidence from ballistics experts and computer forensic teams who described the sequence and timing of the shots that killed Reeva Steenkamp.

Chicago train crash injures 32 people at O’Hare airport

A commuter train has derailed at an underground station at Chicago O’Hare International Airport early Monday, injuring 32 people on board, officials said.

The eight-car Chicago commuter train plowed across a platform and scaled an escalator.

No one suffered life-threatening injuries in the Blue Line derailment at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said during a morning briefing.

An enormous disaster was avoided thanks to the timing of the crash at 02:50 a.m. The bustling station is usually packed with travelers making their way to or from Chicago from the major airport, and a Chicago Transit Authority official said the crash happened at a traditionally quiet time.

CTA investigators along with the city fire department and police were reviewing security footage and interviewing the driver and other CTA workers to pin down the cause of the accident around 2:50 a.m. National Transportation Safety Board investigators were expected to arrive later in the day.

“We will be looking at equipment. We will be looking at signals. We’ll be looking at the human factor and any extenuating circumstances,” CTA spokesman Brian Steele said.

“But really at this point, it’s far too soon to speculate.”

Transit agency officials said crews were working to remove the train and fix the escalator, which received “significant damage”. Hours after the crash, the front of the first car could still be seen near the top of the escalator.

Christopher Bushell, CTA’s chief infrastructure officer, said it would likely be at least 12 to 24 hours before the station would reopen. He said workers will cut the train apart and remove it in pieces on a flatbed.

The CTA was busing passengers to and from O’Hare to the next station on the line.

The train appeared to have been going too fast as it approached the end-of-line station and didn’t stop at a bumping post — a metal shock absorber at the end of the tracks.

The injured were taken to four hospitals and most were able to walk away from the wreck unaided.

Divergent tops US box office with $56 million

Divergent has topped the US box office over the weekend.

Based on the Veronica Roth books, the sci-fi thriller took $56 million over the weekend, studio estimates said.

Divergent is the third franchise based on young-adult best-sellers from Lionsgate after Twilight and The Hunger Games.

The movie made less than anticipated but Richie Fay president of domestic distribution for Lionsgate called it “a great beginning”.

Twilight opened with $69.6 million and The Hunger Games with $152.5 million.

Shailene Woodley and Theo James star in Divergent, which also features Kate Winslet and is set in a dystopian Chicago where society is divided into five factions and one of them, the Divergents, are targeted to be destroyed.

The Muppet sequel Muppets Most Wanted, starring Ricky Gervais did not do as well as expected, taking just $16.5 million over the weekend.

The original Disney Muppet movie reboot opened with $29.2 million in 2011.

Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, admitted it was disappointing, especially as advance tracking had suggested the sequel would do much better.

In its third week of release, Mr. Peabody and Sherman continued to do well – it took $11.7 million putting it in third place.

The biggest surprise was the film God’s Not Dead, which made $8.6 million, despite playing on just 780 screens.

The independently released faith film is about a college student who battles his philosophy professor, as he refuses to sign his declaration that God is Dead in order to pass his course.

Meanwhile the film version of the TV show Veronica Mars made just $144,000 in its second week.

Veronica Mars, which was funded by fans via Kickstarter, has made a total of $2.9 million for Warner Bros.

Flight MH370: Australian plane spots two new objects in hunt for missing jet

According to new reports, an Australian plane has spotted two objects in the hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, and a ship has arrived in the area to find them.

The objects could be picked up in the southern Indian Ocean in a few hours, Malaysia’s transport minister said.

One object was circular and grey or green, and the other rectangular and orange, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.

Tony Abbott said it was not known whether the objects were from flight MH370, and could be flotsam.

The two objects were different, the prime minister said, from several white, square-shaped objects spotted earlier by Chinese military planes.

“The Australian Maritime Safety Authority [AMSA] has advised that objects have been located by a Royal Australian Air Force P3 Orion. And I can advise the House that HMAS Success is on scene and is attempting to locate and recover these objects,” Tony Abbott told the Australian parliament.

Investigators could be closer to resolving “one of the great mysteries of our time”, the prime minister added.

Speaking at a daily news briefing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein confirmed the missing airliner had been carrying wooden pallets, but said there was no connection yet to a reported Australian sighting of pallets floating in the search zone.

Ukraine: President Oleksandr Turchynov orders withdrawal of armed forces from Crimea

Ukraine’s interim President Oleksandr Turchynov has ordered the withdrawal of armed forces from Crimea.

Ukraine’s decision was taken because of Russian threats to the lives of military staff and their families, Oleksandr Turchynov announced.

Russian troops have seized most of Ukraine’s bases in Crimea, including the naval base at Feodosia.

Earlier this month, Russia annexed Crimea after a referendum which Ukraine and the West considered illegal.

The G7 group of industrialized countries is to consider a collective response to the crisis during talks in The Hague.

G7 leaders are meeting on the sidelines of a long-planned summit on global threats to nuclear security.

“The national security and defense council has reached a decision, under instructions from the defense ministry, to conduct a redeployment of military units stationed in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea,” Oleksandr Turchynov said.

“The cabinet of ministers has instructions to resettle the families of soldiers as well as everyone else who today is forced to leave their homes under the pressure and aggression of the Russian army’s occupying forces.”

The announcement came shortly after Russian troops captured the naval base at Feodosia, the third such takeover in 48 hours.

Defense spokesman Vladislav Seleznyov said the Russians had attacked the base from two directions using armored personnel carriers and stun grenades.

Feodosia was one of the last remaining bases under Kiev’s control, but had been surrounded by Russian forces for some time.

Two other military bases were stormed and seized on Friday.

Russian defense officials said earlier that the tricolor of Russia had been hoisted at 189 Ukrainian military units and facilities in Crimea.

Egypt: 529 Muslim Brotherhood members sentenced to death

An Egyptian court has sentenced to death 529 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

Muslim Brotherhood members were convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacks on people and property.

The group is among over 1,200 supporters of Mohamed Morsi on trial, including senior Muslim Brotherhood members.

Authorities have cracked down harshly on Islamists since Mohamed Morsi was removed by the military in July. Hundreds have been killed and thousands arrested.

They are expected to appeal.

The verdict now goes to Egypt’s supreme religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval or rejection.

Campaigners say that while death sentences are often handed down in Egypt, few have been carried out in recent years.

The final trial session will not be held until April 28, so there is some time left before the sentence is confirmed and there will be time to appeal in that period.

The court in Minya, south of Cairo, issued its ruling after only two sessions in which the defendants’ lawyers complained they had no chance to present their case.

Lawyers have accused the presiding judge of “veering away from all legal norms” and denying justice to the accused, our correspondent adds.

They were convicted, among other charges, of the murder of the deputy commander of the Matay district police station in Minya.

More than 150 suspects were in court for the trial – the others were convicted in absentia, reports say.

The court also acquitted 16 other defendants.

The attacks took place in August after security forces broke up two camps of pro-Morsi supporters in Cairo, killing hundreds of people.

Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military in July 2013 following mass street protests against his government.

A second group of 700 Mohamed Morsi supporters is due to go on trial on Tuesday.

Flight MH370: Chinese plane spots possible debris in southern Indian Ocean

Suspicious objects have been spotted in the southern Indian Ocean by a Chinese plane hunting for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet as more nations joined the search, China’s state media say.

Searchers saw two “relatively big” objects with “many white smaller ones scattered within a radius of several kilometres”, Xinhua news agency said.

Australia said it had been informed and would try to locate the objects.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared on March 8 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

Ten planes were scheduled to scour the southern Indian Ocean area on Monday for possible debris picked up earlier by radar echoes and satellite imagery.

Two Chinese military planes flew out to the search area, around 1,550 miles south-west of Australian city Perth, on Monday morning, while two Japanese P-3 Orion aircraft set off later in the day.

They joined six other planes, including US and Australian military planes, in searching a 26,000 sq miles area in the ocean.

An Australian navy ship is already in the area, while several Chinese ships are also on their way.

“When two of our IL-76 planes were searching the relevant suspected sea area, one of the planes photographed white, square floating objects,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters at a regular press briefing.

“At present we are unable to confirm whether the floating objects are related to the missing passenger jet,” he said, adding that China was currently analyzing the photographs.

The IL-76 crew has given co-ordinates of the objects to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), as well as China’s ice-breaker Xue Long, which is heading to the area, Xinhua news agency says.

AMSA, which is co-ordinating search efforts, said in a statement it “was advised about the reported objects sighted by a Chinese aircraft.

“The reported objects are within today’s search area and attempts will be made to relocate them.”

However, the US Navy P8 Poseidon plane tasked with investigating the reported sightings was unable to relocate the objects, AMSA said later on its Twitter feed.

Earlier, the authority had warned that weather conditions in the search area were expected to deteriorate.

France local elections 2014: Marine Le Pen’s National Front makes significant gains

French far-right National Front party has made significant gains in local elections, winning an outright majority in Henin-Beaumont on the first round.

The National Front is in first place in some other towns it is targeting, according to projections.

President Francois Hollande’s Socialists have lost ground overall and may lose control of some major towns.

The vote is seen as a key test for the Socialists, deeply unpopular after nearly two years in power.

The Socialists were also hit by the low turnout in the first round of the elections – exit polls suggest up to 35% of voters stayed at home.

The vote is to choose councilors and mayors in more than 36,000 villages, towns and cities.

The anti-immigration National Front (FN) took 50.26% of the vote in the northern town of Henin-Beaumont, which has historically voted for the left.

Elsewhere, in Avignon and Perpignan in the south, the party’s candidates for mayor had the biggest number of votes.

In some 200 places FN candidates have won through to the second round next weekend.

Marine Le Pen, National Front leader since 2011, hailed the results, saying her party had “arrived as a major independent force – a political force at both national and local level”.

In most cases, these candidates have little chance of gaining control of the town halls as they will be beaten in round two.

However, it is a big advance for the far right and an expression of the growing popular exasperation with the establishment parties of the right and the left.

Many people who voted for President Francois Hollande two years ago chose to abstain, which has meant losses for the Socialists and in many important towns they will struggle in the second round to hold off challenges from the main centre-right UMP opposition party.

Earlier, pollsters identified half a dozen towns that could see National Front rule as a result of the elections, giving it the chance to show it can be trusted with power after attempts to run four towns in the late 1990s revealed its lack of competence, Reuters news agency said.

Taiwan: Hundreds of students occupy government headquarters over China trade deal

Hundreds of Taiwanese students have occupied government headquarters to protest at a trade deal with China.

Police used water cannon and dragged out students one by one, clearing the building by dawn on Monday.

Close to 60 people were arrested and more than 100 hurt, reports said.

The protesters say the agreement with China would hurt Taiwan’s economy and leave it vulnerable to pressure from Beijing.

Another group of students and activists have occupied Taiwan’s parliament since early last week.

The students wants more scrutiny over all future dealings with China, including any trade agreements.

They also want the current deal – which would allow the two sides to invest more freely in each other’s services markets – to be scrapped.

The governing Kuomintang party says it is determined to ratify the deal with Beijing, which it says will boost the economy and create jobs.

China formally regards Taiwan as a part of its territory, despite the island governing itself for six decades.

The protests began early last week after ruling party’s lawmakers said a joint committee had completed its review of the pact, which was signed in June 2013 but has not yet been ratified by lawmakers.

Students broke into the legislature late on Tuesday and have since defied police efforts to evict them, using barricades made of furniture.

On Friday thousands of people rallied to support the students, and the opposition Democratic Progressive Party has also backed them.

On Sunday, President Ma Ying-jeou said that the occupation of parliament broke the law, adding: “I must say that [the pact] is completely for the sake of Taiwan’s economic future.”

Late on Sunday, some protesters pushed past riot police to storm the government headquarters, pulling down barbed wire and using ladders to access second-floor offices.

Violent clashes erupted as police moved to restore order.
