Startup Businesses Are On The Rise: What You Need To Know To Start Up Your Own

The UK economy is set to grow by around 0.5 percent before the end of 2014, according to a recent survey. Even though this figure is less than what was forecast earlier this year, it represents the worst case scenario. The most optimistic prediction is a rise of 0.8 percent. Despite the future being uncertain, some believe the British economy is still growing at a faster rate than its counterparts around the globe.

Startups on the rise

Regardless of whether there is an economic recovery or rescission, it is always a risk to start up a new business. For the moment, however, the outlook for small businesses seems positive. More and more people are choosing to leave large corporations and set up businesses of their own. A survey recently found that 65 percent of people working in a corporate environment would rather be working for a small startup company. People are attracted to the idea of starting their own business because it could mean making their dream job a reality. It could also give people more control over their work, and the freedom to create their own rules and regulations. On the other hand, working for a large corporation is sometimes viewed as political and bureaucratic. Some people may feel that they are not respected within the organisation and are not given sufficient training or opportunities to progress.

Government initiatives

The UK Government seems to be taking notice of this development and facilitating this change in various ways.

Lord Young’s third and final report on enterprise was published in June 2014 and focuses on encouraging enterprise in education. Of particular significance, Lord Young recommends the introduction of an ‘enterprise passport’. This passport will act as a digital record of all enterprise-related activity that a child has taken part in during their time in education. This move will allow young people to learn business techniques at an early stage in life and allow them to develop important employment skills.

There many UK Government schemes available that help new and emerging businesses. The growth vouchers scheme helps small enterprises get strategic advice on finance, marketing and hiring and training staff. The decrease in corporation tax and the removal of restrictions on starting a business from home, will also benefit small businesses.

Startup businesses that don’t qualify for government funding can apply for a bank loan. Or, new businesses may wish to try the popular method of crowdfunding to cover the initial costs of setting up. Crowdfunding involves gathering monetary contributions from a large amount of people. Additional funds can be raised by selling shares in the new business. There are plenty of funding options available and several online resources which help startup businesses find the right finance package.

Recommendations for new businesses

Budding entrepreneurs are encouraged to find mentors in the business world who can impart wisdom and provide advice. This is known as radical mentoring, where mentors provide guidance, feedback, and support to entrepreneurs. Having a radical mentoring expert by their side means that entrepreneurs can learn from the mistakes of others and avoid costly errors. Mentors can also provide insight into the best practices to follow when running a business, and they can offer valuable advice on how to best structure the organization. There are a number of services available that link up new businesses with business mentoring organisations. Mentors provide advice on dealing with difficult situations and give guidance on developing and improving the business.

Market research is an essential element to launching a new enterprise. It is important to test any new products or services before selling them. Market research also allows a new business to receive feedback from potential customers. It is important to pay close attention to negative feedback and think about whether alterations to the product or service should be made. Researching the market also allows new businesses to identify and analyse competitors.

New enterprises should start with a solid business plan. The development of a comprehensive plan is an essential step in order to set out the finer details, set goals and address any problems at an early stage. The plan will include a summary of the business, finance information and market research. It will also include details of competitors, as well as sales and marketing information. Business plan templates are available online to download from various sources. Businesses will need to present their plan to banks, potential investors and partners, so it is important that it is complete and professional.

Experienced entrepreneurs recommend that every emerging business should have a website. Establishing an online presence is an essential way to spread the message about the goods and services that the enterprise provides. It is also important to use social media to reach out to potential customers and to other businesses. Commercial organisations are not only using social media to connect with customers, they are also using it to give their company personality. Images and videos are used to portray a more friendly, approachable organisation. Social media channels are also being used by businesses to provide customers with exclusive information and deals.

It is also recommended that new businesses invest money in upskilling their staff. Even if the company employs a small number of people, this is still an important step. Providing regular training for your staff will ensure the business is kept up to date. Training will also keep staff motivated. Many businesses are now also offering their staff training in areas that are not directly relevant to their role, in order to boost morale.

Startup companies should organize an opening event and hire a professional speaker to promote the business. Depending on the state of the company, this speaker could be used to motivate new employees or attract potential clients. If the speaker is being used to motivate employees, bringing in one of the top sales motivational speakers in the world makes sense because it can help these employees to hit the ground running. Having a well-known and reputable speaker associated with the company immediately adds credibility to the organization and that alone can generate sales as the business attempts to grow.

New businesses are advised to think carefully about the right office space. It is not likely that a new business will want to be locked into a lengthy lease. The company may increase in size before the lease is up and so more suitable accommodation may be required. Businesses should consider the rent and running costs of the premises. It may be possible to find office space in Leeds available for rent at a reasonable price, as well as elsewhere in the UK. New businesses should also consider the type of space the business needs and what amenities are necessary.

It is recommended that entrepreneurs work out what legal structure fits their business. The company may be set up as a sole trader, limited company or partnership. Each model comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. This decision should be made before registering for tax and trading.

Nigeria: Boko Haram militants seize Chibok

According to new reports, Boko Haram militants have seized the north-eastern Nigerian town of Chibok, the home of more than 200 schoolgirls the insurgents kidnapped in April.

Militants attacked and took control of the town, in Borno state, on Thursday evening, residents said.

The militants have repeatedly targeted villages around Chibok over recent months.

Boko Haram says it is fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.

Residents told the Sahara Reporters news website that the militants headed to the centre of Chibok and declared that they were taking it over as part of their caliphate.

The schoolgirl kidnappings in Chibok caused worldwide outrage and sparked a social media campaign.

Since the kidnapping people have complained that the area was not well protected and many residents of Chibok had already moved to safer parts of the country, fearing another attack.

Boko Haram has changed tactics in recent months by holding on to territory rather than using hit-and-run attacks that have left thousands dead.

Last month, the group dismissed the government’s claims to have agreed a ceasefire. The government had said the ceasefire would set the stage for the release of the Chibok schoolgirls.

Chibok is a relatively small, mainly Christian town.

Its seizure comes a day after a government helicopter came down in Yola, in north-east Adamawa State – the second military helicopter to go down in the area in a week.

Officials and residents said the army had managed to recapture the town of Mubi, which was the biggest town under Boko Haram’s control.

Alibaba considers issuing first US bond sale

0

Alibaba will meet with investors next week as it considers issuing its first US bond sale.

The Chinese e-commerce giant has hired Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan to manage the sale.

Alibaba would offer dollar-denominated notes to institutional investors, the company said in a statement.

Reports suggest that Alibaba would sell $8 billion in bonds after its record public listing just two months ago.

News of Alibaba’s bond sale comes after it made $9 billion in sales on Singles’ Day in China this week, which is considered the world’s biggest online sales day.

In September, the company’s initial public offering in New York was the biggest in the world, raising $25 billion and its stock is up nearly 70% since then.

Alibaba will hold meetings next week in Boston, New York, Hong Kong, London and Singapore.

Moody’s has given the proposed bond an A1 credit rating.

Halliburton in talks to buy Baker Hughes

0

Oil industry giants, Halliburton and Baker Hughes, are in talks about a possible merger.

Baker Hughes, the industry’s third largest services provider, confirmed press reports, adding that the talks were “preliminary”.

Any deal with Halliburton, the sector’s No 2 behind the far larger Schlumberger, is likely to face competition issues.

The companies provide drilling and logistics services, but have been hit by falling oil prices and higher costs.

The falling crude oil price has made exploration less economical and the big oil and gas producers have been cutting costs. A tie-up would allow the companies to better weather the downturn in the market.

A merged Halliburton-Baker Hughes would create a company worth about $67 billion, employing initially 140,000 people. But its market capitalization would still be half that of market leader Schlumberger.

Analysts said that antitrust authorities in the US, Europe and China would want to investigate the terms of any deal, and that a merged group might need to sell some assets before approval was given.

Warren Buffett buys Duracell for $4.7 billion

0

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has announced it will acquire battery maker Duracell from Procter & Gamble.

Last month, Procter & Gamble had announced plans to spin off the battery business.

Berkshire will acquire Duracell via an unusual move, in which the company sells the $4.7 billion shares it owns in Procter & Gamble back to P&G.

That structure will reduce the overall tax bill Berkshire Hathaway must pay.

Also as part of the deal, Procter & Gamble will first invest $1.7 billion in Duracell in order to recapitalize the business.

Warren Buffett said in a statement: “I have always been impressed by Duracell, as a consumer and as a long-term investor in [Procter & Gamble] and Gillette.”

“Duracell is a leading global brand with top quality products, and it will fit well within Berkshire Hathaway.”

Procter & Gamble had acquired Duracell when it bought Gillette in 2005 for over $50 billion.

However, as the company has sought to focus more on growth, it has started to shed some underperforming aspects of its business.

Duracell leads the battery market with an estimated $2.2 billion in sales, but that figure has not been rising rapidly.

Warren Buffett had said over the summer he was looking for “elephants” – or big, brand name firms – to acquire.

Mick Jagger is deeply upset as court reveals confidential medical information

Mick Jagger is reportedly “deeply upset” after confidential medical information was revealed during a court battle over a contested insurance claim.

On November 14, the Rolling Stones settled a dispute with insurers over a $12.7 million claim for concerts postponed when Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, L’Wren Scott, died.

However, the Stones expressed concern about private information being made public.

Documents revealed Mick Jagger, 71, was suffering from “acute traumatic stress disorder” following L’Wren Scott’s death.

L’Wren Scott took her own life in March, prompting the Stones to postpone a tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Court documents suggested Mick Jagger was advised by doctors not to perform for at least 30 days.

“We are deeply upset that confidential medical and other private information about members of the band and their immediate family and loved ones has entered the public domain as a result of a US court filing initiated by insurers four weeks ago,” said a spokesman for Mick Jagger.

“This was done without the knowledge of the band or reference to their legal representatives.

“This has only been discovered and reported in the press in the last week, by which time we are pleased to say the insurers and the Rolling Stones had, in fact, settled the insurance claim.”

“No further comment will be made about this matter,” the statement concluded.

The Rolling Stones had taken out a policy to be paid in the event shows were cancelled due to the death of family members or others, including L’Wren Scott.

Underwriters had contested the claim saying L’Wren Scott’s death may not be covered by the policy, arguing that she may have been suffering from a pre-existing mental illness which could invalidate the policy.

AC/DC had problems with Phil Rudd while recording latest album

AC/DC members say they have not spoken to drummer Phil Rudd since he was charged with attempting to arrange a murder on November 6.

Angus Young said they had had “a few problems” with Phil Rudd while recording their latest album but his arrest “took everyone by surprise”.

“We haven’t had contact,” said Angus Young.

“He’s got himself in a pickle.”

Key charges were later dropped, but Phil Rudd still face charges of drugs possession and making threats to kill.

“We had a few issues before with him,” said Angus Young, speaking about Phil Rudd during an interview in New York to promote their album Rock or Bust.

“Even when we were recording it was hard even to get to him to do the recording.”

“And then he was supposed to show up to do promos with us, to do video shoots and a few other things, and he never showed up for that either.

“So, at this stage, it’s a pretty tough call for us.”

AC/DC is one of the highest grossing music acts of all time. Their best known hits include Highway to Hell and You Shook Me All Night Long.

Phil Rudd, now 60, was kicked out of the band in 1983 and rejoined in 1994. But his absence from a recent photo of band members prompted online speculation about whether he was still in the band.

New Zealand police had initially accused Phil Rudd of trying to arrange for a hitman to carry out two killings, but charges were dropped after 24 hours.

Under the current charges, Phil Rudd could face a maximum prison term of seven years for the charge of threatening to kill.

“He’s got to sort himself out I think,” said Angus Young, adding that the band remain “resolved to go forward”.

“At this point it’s kind of a question mark. But if we’re touring, there will be a drummer in place, put it that way.”

Angus Young, 59, is the only remaining original member of the band, after his brother, Malcolm, was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year.

The current line-up includes Cliff Williams, Brian Johnson and Angus Young’s nephew, Stevie.

Phil Rudd is due to appear in court in New Zealand on November 27.

Immigration reform: Barack Obama defends plans to use executive powers

President Barack Obama has defended plans to use his overriding executive powers to push through changes to the US immigration system.

Barack Obama said Congress had been given ample opportunity to come up with its own plan but had failed to act.

Republicans in Congress say such action would be beyond Barack Obama’s authority.

His remarks follow media reports he plans to extend protection from deportation, potentially affecting as many as five million immigrants.

At a news briefing during a visit to Myanmar, Barack Obama said he had given the House of Representatives more than a year to come up with an immigration bill but they had failed to do so.

The Senate passed a far-reaching immigration bill in 2013, but the House has not taken up the legislation.

“There has been ample opportunity for Congress to pass a bipartisan immigration bill that would strengthen our borders, improve the legal immigration system and lift millions of people out of the shadows,” he said.

“I said that if in fact Congress failed to act, I would use all the lawful authority I possess to try to make the system work better,” the president added.

“And that’s going to happen before the end of the year.”

Barack Obama added that as soon as Congress passed a bill he could sign, “any executive actions will be replaced”.

However, Republicans in Congress said the president should work with them.

“We’re going to fight the president tooth and nail if he continues down this path,” House Speaker John Boehner told reporters.

Mitch McConnell, the incoming Senate majority leader, urged the president to “work with us to try to find a way to improve our immigration system”.

Some Republicans are pushing for the budget bill to include a statement prohibiting “the use of appropriated funds for the president’s immigration machinations”.

Such a move could provoke a block by the Democrats, or a veto by the president, which in turn raises the risk of a government shutdown.

Unilateral action has been expected on immigration but details of what the president was considering were first reported this week in the New York Times and Fox News.

At the centre of the reports is a plan to extend Barack Obama’s “deferred action” plan, which was designed to protect young adults who were brought to the US illegally as children from being deported.

The plan is to include parents of children who are US citizens or legal residents.

The action is designed to prevent the break-up of families via deportations. The number of those affected by the suggested policy is based on how long an individual has lived in the US.

If the administration limits the “deferred action” to those who have lived in the US for more than 10 years, it would affect 2.5 million undocumented immigrants, experts estimate.

If the time limit is lowered to five years, it would stop deportations for as many as 3.3 million.

Other parts of the executive action reported by the media include: increasing the number of high-tech workers allowed to live and work in the US; an expansion of the existing deferred action plans that would move the cut-off date for children arriving to 2010; shift border security resources to the US southern border, according to reports.

Myanmar: Barack Obama meets opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi

0

President Barack Obama has met Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon.

At a news briefing with the US president, Aung San Suu Kyi has said constitutional rules which bar her from running for president because her sons are half British are “unfair, unjust and undemocratic”.

She said the reform process in the once military-ruled nation had hit a “bumpy patch”.

Aung San Suu Kyi said it could be brought on track with international help.

President Barack Obama said the reforms were “by no means complete or irreversible”.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, moved from military to civilian rule in 2010 and is governed by a military-backed civilian administration.

Under Thein Sein, many political prisoners have been freed and media restrictions eased. The pro-democracy party of Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent years under house arrest, has rejoined the political fold and holds a small block of seats in parliament.

Critics have warned that reforms have stalled in recent months, as all eyes turn to 2015 when the next general election will be held.

A clause in the new constitution states that anyone whose spouse or children are foreign citizens cannot run for the top job. Aung San Suu Kyi’s late husband was British and her two sons are British citizens.

Aung San Suu Kyi told reporters outside her home: “I always warn against over-optimism, because that could lead to complacency.

“Our reform process is going through a bumpy patch, but this bumpy patch is something we can negotiate with commitment, with help and understanding from our friends around the world.

“What we need is a healthy balance of optimism and pessimism.”

Barack Obama was in the Burmese capital, Nay Pyi Taw, on November 13 for an Asian summit where he held talks with President Thein Sein.

He said the process of reform was “by no means complete or irreversible” and added that the US “recognizes the challenges ahead and cannot be complacent”.

“I don’t understand a provision that would bar someone from running for president because of who their children are. That doesn’t make much sense to me,” he said.

Aung San Suu Kyi said the Burmese people supported the opposition’s call to amend the clause, but added: “I don’t think it’s because they want me to be president, but because they recognize it’s unfair, unjust and undemocratic.”

Her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), won a landslide victory in the by-elections in 2012. It did not contest the November 2010 general election because of laws it said were unfair.

Barack Obama said he and Aung San Suu Kyi had discussed ways of bolstering Myanmar’s transition.

Paris tiger: Major police operation launched to capture big cat

French authorities have resumed search for a tiger on the loose near Paris.

The big cat appears to have moved closer to Paris after fresh paw prints were found.

A huntsman confirmed animal prints at the Ferrieres-en-Brie service station 16 miles east of Paris at 06:45 AM, Le Parisien daily reports.

The young tiger was first spotted at Montevrain, 24 miles east of Paris, on Thursday morning.

To reach the service station, it apparently crossed the A4 motorway.

A reporter from Parisian radio station France Bleu 107.1 photographed the new prints.

Following their discovery, the Total service station at Ferrieres-en-Brie, on the A4, was shut down.

“It seems the beast crossed the A4,” Seine-et-Marne council leader Vincent Eble told France Bleu 107.1.

Following initial doubts about the nature of the stray beast, French officials and experts are categorical about it being an actual tiger, France’s AFP news agency reports.

A resident raised the alert after spotting the animal at the service station on the side of the motorway leading away from Paris, Le Parisiene reports.

Police, fire officials and a specially trained hunting dog have been combing countryside outside Montevrain, helped by a helicopter.

Residents of Montevrain and two other towns have been told to stay indoors.

Children were kept in schools on November 13 and collected by their parents by car.

It was unclear where the animal came from, though there is a big cat park near Montevrain.

The helicopter was equipped with a thermal detector to try to spot the animal in the undergrowth.

A huntsman, officially designated as a “wolf catcher”, with a specially trained dog was also part of the search team, authorities in Montevrain and Seine-et-Marne said.

Specialists said the animal’s tracks were those of a young tiger. An official from the mayor’s office said they had been able to trace the animal to the woodland by following its prints.

The Montevrain mayor’s office dismissed the idea that the tiger could have escaped from a circus that was in the town until Saturday, Le Parisien reported.

White House security breach report shows Secret Service flaws in fence jumper case

0

The White House security report has found that an intruder armed with a knife managed to dodge guards and enter the building because of poor communication and a series of lapses.

Omar Gonzalez jumped over the fence in September, ran past guards and was only stopped deep inside the building.

An official US inquiry says Secret Service agents – including one with an attack dog – did not react on time or in the right manner.

The Secret Service chief, Julia Pierson, resigned, partly as a result of this breach.

She stepped down after details emerged of this incident, and of previous breaches in the security surrounding the president.

The latest findings about the September incident are part of a broader inquiry into the lapses, led by the Department of Homeland Security.

According to The New York Times, an executive summary of the inquiry released on Thursday night said the blame for the breach lay with “performance, organization and technical” failures.

Several lapses were highlighted in the report, pointing to a lack of training, bad staffing decisions and failures in communication.

The report described in detail how agents had missed a series of opportunities to stop Omar Gonzalez – on the evening of the intrusion as well in the run-up to it.

Omar Gonzalez scaled the fence at a point where a spike was missing, the report said.

Many officers at a gate on Pennsylvania Avenue did not have a clear view of him because of a construction project.

An officer with an attack dog on the White House driveway was using his mobile phone at the time, and did not hear warnings on his radio earpiece, or on another radio, which had been stashed away in a locker.

Two officers who were pursuing Omar Gonzalez did not expect him to pass through thick bushes, which he did.

Doors into the White House that officers had assumed were locked turned out to be open. Some officers also hesitated to follow Omar Gonzalez because they did not know the layout of the building, the report said.

Once inside the building, the report said Omar Gonzalez was able to push past a female officer, who was smaller than him and who had accidently reached for her torch instead of a metal baton.

He was eventually tackled in the East Room, a long, ornately-decorated chamber used for presidential addresses and formal receptions.

Early on in the intrusion, warnings were not relayed properly to agents inside the White House building because alarm systems and radios failed to function as intended.

The report also cited failings in the run-up to the intrusion, as the former soldier’s suspicious behavior had attracted the attention of the authorities several times.

Omar Gonzalez was stopped in Virginia in July. Then, officers found two powerful rifles, four handguns and other firearms and ammunition in his vehicle along with a map marking the White House.

President Barack Obama and his family were not at the White House when the intrusion happened, having departed about 10 minutes earlier by helicopter.

Omar Gonzalez has been indicted on charges including unlawfully entering a restricted building or grounds while carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of ammunition.

North Korea to send Choe Ryong-hae as special envoy to Russia

North Korea will send top Communist party official Choe Ryong-hae as special envoy to Russia, state media have said, without stating the purpose of the trip.

Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) also did not say when Choe Ryong-hae would go.

In Soviet times, Russia was a strong ally to North Korea, supplying aid and missile technology.

Relations with China, North Korea’s strongest supporter in recent years, have frayed recently.

North Korea will send Choe Ryong-hae as special envoy to Russia
North Korea will send Choe Ryong-hae as special envoy to Russia

Beijing is distancing itself from Pyongyang after North Korea raised tensions last year with a third nuclear test and issued threats of nuclear strikes against South Korea and the US.

North Korea has also pulled out of the six-party talks aimed at its nuclear disarmament which involve China, the two Koreas, Russia, Japan and the US.

The visit comes ahead of an expected UN General Assembly vote next week on a resolution – put forth by the EU and Japan – that condemns the North’s human rights record.

Choe Ryong-hae is thought to be one of Kim Jong-un’s closest associates. He went to Beijing last year as Kim Jong-un’s special envoy to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Choe Ryong-hae was also part of a high-profile delegations that went to South Korea in October to resume senior-level talks.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi: ISIS releases message from leader after death reports

Islamic State (ISIS) militants have released an audiotape they say was recorded by the group leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, days after reports that he had been killed or injured.

In the recording, released via social media, the speaker says ISIS fighters will never stop fighting “even if only one soldier remains”.

Correspondents say the recording appears authentic and recent.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was said to have been caught in a US-led air strike near the Iraqi city of Mosul last week.

Thursday’s 17-minute recording makes no direct reference to that air strike, but does mention some developments that have occurred since then.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was said to have been caught in a US-led air strike near the Iraqi city of Mosul
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was said to have been caught in a US-led air strike near the Iraqi city of Mosul

An English transcript of the recording was also released.

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the US-led coalition fighting ISIS was making progress, but must “prepare for a long and difficult struggle”.

The ISIS audiotape mentions President Barack’s Obama decision to deploy an extra 1,500 troops to Iraq – a move announced shortly after the air strike on Mosul.

The recording calls on ISIS supporters to “erupt volcanoes of jihad” across the world.

He disparages opponents of ISIS as “Jews, Crusaders, apostates… [and] devils”, and says the US and its allies “are terrified, weak and powerless”.

The recording also calls for attacks in Saudi Arabia – describing Saudi leaders as “the head of the snake” – and says that the US-led military campaign in Syria and Iraq is failing.

Gulf state rulers, who have joined the US-led coalition against IS, are described as “treacherous”.

The recording also refers to new pledges of allegiance from jihadist groups in Libya, Egypt and Yemen that occurred in recent days.

“O soldiers of the Islamic State… erupt volcanoes of jihad everywhere. Light the earth with fire against all dictators,” the voice on the recording says.

In contrast to the audio messaging disparaging the coalition efforts, Chuck Hagel said US-led air strikes had helped in “degrading and destroying ISIL’s [ISIS] war fighting capacity and in denying safe haven to its fighters”.

“Directly and through support of Iraqi forces, coalition air strikes have hit ISIL’s command and control, its leadership, its revenue sources… and impaired its ability to amass forces,” he added.

The self-styled Islamic State – a jihadist group also known as ISIS, or ISIL – has seized swathes of Syria and Iraq since June, declaring a caliphate over territory it controls.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi himself is a shadowy figure who only showed himself publicly for the first time in a video released in July, when he delivered a sermon in Mosul, Iraq.

He claims lineage from the family and tribe of the Prophet Muhammad.

Although currently limited to Iraq and Syria, ISIS has promised to “break the borders” of Jordan and Lebanon and to “free Palestine”.

Oil price falls at four-year low

0

Brent crude oil price has fallen at a four-year low, from $3.60 or 4.4% to $77.52.

The benchmark US crude oil price is also at a four-year low, after losing $2.57 to close at $74.28.

The price has fallen sharply since the summer and is 30% below its June price.

The drop comes as traders believe members of the OPEC oil exporting countries, which control about 40% of world oil exports, will not cut production.

Brent crude oil price has fallen below $80 a barrel
Brent crude oil price has fallen below $80 a barrel

OPEC’s 12 member countries will meet later this month to discuss the global oil market.

Lower oil prices typically prompt OPEC nations, which include the biggest oil exporting nation in the world, Saudi Arabia, to rein back output in order to limit supply and boost prices and income.

Most need higher oil prices to fund rising government spending.

Recent comments by oil ministers from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait suggest the group is unlikely to agree to a cut.

The US energy department said this week that it expected low fuel prices to last into next year.

Elvis Presley memorabilia: First recording to be auctioned in Memphis

Elvis Presley’s first recording is to be sold at an auction in Memphis.

In June 1953, an 18-year-old Elvis Presley went to the Memphis Recording Service to record My Happiness and That’s When Your Heartaches Begin onto acetate.

He wanted to find out what his voice sounded like on record and paid $4 for the session.

Elvis Presley returned to record sessions for Sun Records the following year and went on to become the “king of rock ‘n’ roll”. The auction will take place in January.

It will be one of 68 rare artifacts to be auctioned at his former home of Graceland in Memphis.

The announcement from Graceland described the record as “part of the <<Holy Grail>> of artifacts in rock ‘n’ roll history”.

Elvis Presley was said to have made the recording partly as a present for his mother.

But the family did not have a record player, so he took it to a friend’s house to listen to the results of the session and left it there.

This will be the first time it has come up for public sale.

The other items in the auction will include Elvis’ driving license, issued in 1952, a 1955 contract to perform on the Louisiana Hayride radio and TV programs and a jacket worn in the film Viva Las Vegas.

The auction will take place on January 8, what would have been Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday. The items have not been given estimated values.

Montgomery school strips Christmas from calendar

0

The Montgomery County Board of Education in Maryland voted 7 to 1 to scrub Christmas and other religious holidays from its published school calendar without disturbing the days off.

Montgomery School Board member Rebecca Smondrowski was flooded with angry messages after Tuesday’s decision. She had supported a proposal to strip Jewish and Muslim holy days from the calendar and offered an amendment to remove Christmas and Easter, too.

A day later, Rebecca Smondrowski stood by her decision and stressed that students would still have the holidays off; only the calendar presentation would change. The idea, she said, was to reflect that schools were not being closed for religious observances but because of high absenteeism among students and staff members on those days.

School Board Vice President Patricia O’Neill said she’s confident that the board made a good decision.

“It seems we’ve made multiple religious groups mad, but I believe we did the right thing,” she said.

“And we’re in good company. Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun – all are silent in calling out Christmas; they call it winter break.”

Montgomery’s School Board vote to eliminate calendar references to religious holidays followed an earlier request by Muslim community leaders to give equal prominence on the calendar to the Islamic holy day of Eid al-Adha.

Muslim leaders had for years requested that Montgomery’s schools be closed for at least one of the two major Muslim holy days. They had not succeeded, but in the 2015-2016 academic year, Eid al-Adha falls on the same day as Yom Kippur, which is a day off in Montgomery. So Muslim leaders asked for equal billing on the calendar.

Montgomery County officials note that state law requires school closings for days surrounding Christmas and Easter.

The decision to close schools for Jewish holidays goes back to the 1970s, officials say, although there has been some dispute about how high absenteeism would be on those days.

George W. Bush responds on Instagram to Bill Clinton’s Twitter challenge

0

President George W. Bush sent an incredible reply after President Bill Clinton asked why he wasn’t on Twitter on November 12.

Bill Clinton questioned George W. Bush with a tweet saying he received his copy of 41: A Portrait of My Father, the biography of former President George H.W. Bush written by his son.

In the message, Bill Clinton asked why George W. Bush had not joined Twitter.

George Bush responded on another social media site, Instagram. He asked why Bill Clinton didn’t have an Instagram account. His message included the hashtag “#BrotherFromAnotherMother”.Photo AP

“Thanks, 42! Hope you like the book about your pal, #41. #HowAreYouSTILLNotOnInstagram #PresidentialGrammers?”

This is almost certainly the first time two former presidents have referred to themselves as brothers from another mother.

Both George W. Bush and Bill Clinton could find themselves involved in the 2016 presidential race. Bill Clinton’s wife, Hillary Clinton, is widely considered the Democratic frontrunner and there is mounting speculation George Bush’s brother, former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush, could run on the Republican side.

Honda widens recall after fifth death linked to defective Takata airbag

0

Honda Motor Co has widened its recall for the defective airbags by another 170,000 vehicles globally, taking its total recalls to nearly 10 million vehicles fitted with potentially defective Takata airbag inflators since 2008, including US region-specific recalls.

The Japanese carmaker said on November 13 that a driver in Malaysia died in July after being hit by shrapnel from an airbag supplied by Takata Corp – the fifth such fatality and the first outside the United States.

Before Thursday’s disclosure, Takata airbags had been linked to four deaths in Honda vehicles in the US. All the victims were hit by shrapnel ejected by the airbag.

Defective Takata airbags are the target of a US safety investigation over the risk they could explode with dangerous force in an accident and shoot metal shards into the vehicle. More than 17 million vehicles made by nearly a dozen different automakers have been recalled globally for flawed Takata airbags since 2008.

In the Malaysia accident on July 27, involving a 2003 Honda City model, the air bag inflator ruptured and sent shrapnel into the vehicle, some of which struck the female driver, Honda said.

Honda learned of the incident on August 27 and notified Japan’s transport ministry on September 10.

Philae probe sends first images after historic comet landing

Philae probe is now stable and sending first pictures after a historic comet landing, but there are concerns about its battery life.

After two bounces, the first one about 1 mile back out into space, the lander settled in the shadow of a cliff, 1 mile from its target site.

It may be problematic to get enough sunlight to charge its batteries.

Launched in 2004, the European Space Agency (ESA) mission hopes to learn about the origins of our Solar System.

It has already sent back the first images ever taken on the surface of a comet.

ESA’s Rosetta satellite carried Philae on a 10-year, 4 billion-mile journey to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which reached its climax on November 12.

After showing an image that indicates Philae’s location – on the far side of a large crater that was considered but rejected as a landing site – the head of the lander team Dr. Stefan Ulamec said: “We could be somewhere in the rim of this crater, which could explain this bizarre… orientation that you have seen.”

Figuring out the orientation and location is a difficult task, he said.

“I can’t really give you much more than you interpret yourself from looking at these beautiful images.”

The team is continuing to receive “great data” from several different instruments on board Philae.

It may be possible to reconfigure Philae’s landing gear and “hop” to a new location, but Dr. Stefan Ulamec said there may not be enough time to do the analysis required for such a risky strategy.

“There is a limited amount of battery power there and the solar panels are not really illuminated, so we don’t know precisely how long it’s going to last,” said Rosetta mission manager Dr. Fred Jansen.

Philae robot probe, the size of a washing machine, was dropped from the Rosetta satellite on Wednesday and spent seven hours travelling down to the icy body.

News of the “first” landing was confirmed at about 16:05 GMT on November 12.

Controllers re-established radio communication with the probe on cue on November 13 after a scheduled break, and began pulling of the new pictures.

These show the feet of the lander and the wider cometscape. One of the three feet is not in contact with the ground.

Philae is stable now, but there is still concern about the longer-term situation because the probe is not properly anchored – the harpoons that should have hooked it into the surface did not fire on contact. Neither did its feet screws get any purchase.

Paris: Tiger on the loose in Montevrain

French police and firefighters are searching for a tiger on the loose in a town outside Paris, local authorities say.

A woman alerted officials after spotting “a big cat” in a supermarket car park in Montevrain, east of Paris, local media reported.

The Montevrain council said on its Facebook page that an area of woodland had been roped off.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors, and children are being kept in schools.

It was unclear where the animal came from, though there is a big cat park near Montevrain.

The owner of the Intermarche supermarket in Montevrain said his wife had spotted the animal at about 08:30 AM local time.

The woman took a photograph that appears to show a large cat.

Le Parisien newspaper said several local residents had sighted the animal.

Specialists said the animal’s tracks were those of a young tiger. An official from the mayor’s office said they had been able to trace the animal to the woodland by following its prints, and that a helicopter was assisting police and fire officials in the search.

The Montevrain mayor’s office dismissed the idea that the tiger could have escaped from a circus that was in the town until November 8, Le Parisien reported.

EuroDisney, which operates nearby Disneyland Paris, said it kept no tigers.

Ebola treatment: Clinical trials to start in West Africa in December

Clinical trials for an effective Ebola treatment are to start in West Africa in December.

The medical charity Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), which has been helping lead the fight against the virus, says three of its treatment centers will host three separate research projects.

Meanwhile, Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has lifted the state of emergency imposed in the country.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf warned “this is not because the fight against Ebola is over”.

It marks the progress being made in the country, where the weekly number of new infections is falling.

In a radio address she told the nation that night curfews would be reduced, weekly markets could take place and preparations were being made for the re-opening of schools.

One trial involves using the blood of recovered Ebola patients to treat sick people in the Guinean capital Conakry.

Two antiviral drugs will be trialed in Guinea and an unconfirmed location.

“This is an unprecedented international partnership which represents hope for patients to finally get a real treatment,” said MSF spokeswoman Dr. Annick Antierens.

The Ebola outbreak is thought to have infected more than 14,000 people, almost all of them in West Africa. The death toll has risen to 5,160.

The first trials are due to start next month. Initial results could be available in February 2015.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced in September that experimental treatments and vaccines for Ebola should be fast-tracked.

Two experimental vaccines, produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the Public Health Agency of Canada, have already been fast-tracked into safety trials.

The GSK vaccine is being tested in Mali, the UK and the US. Research on the Canadian vaccine is also under way in the US.

Around 400 people participate in the first trials and they will be extended to other centers if the early results are promising.

Jodi Arias trial resumes after two weeks

0

Jodi Arias trial resumed on November 12 with testimony from an expert witness and arguments over allegations that authorities destroyed evidence that may have benefited the convicted murderer’s case.

Jodi Arias was found guilty of murder last year in the 2008 killing of ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander at his suburban Phoenix home, but jurors deadlocked on whether she should be sentenced to death or life in prison.

Prosecutors have one more shot with a new jury to secure a death sentence. Otherwise, Jodi Arias faces life in prison.

The sentencing retrial resumed after a lengthy break during which news organizations protested a decision to let a skittish defense witness testify in private and authorities were accused of destroying evidence on Travis Alexander’s computer.

The judge denied a request by the defense to delay the trial based on the allegations of the destruction of evidence, explaining she would take up the matter at a later date.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez said his office had the computer reanalyzed just this week, and it showed the defense claims are false. He also noted that if anything was deleted from the computer, it was done by Jodi Arias’ previous defense attorneys, not authorities.

Defense lawyer Kirk Nurmi told the judge a “plethora of evidence” is being uncovered by computer experts “as we speak.”

Meanwhile, defense-witness testimony resumed after news organizations succeeded last week in getting an appeals court to bar Judge Sherry Stephens from closing the courtroom to the public after some of the testimony by Jodi Arias’ first witness was conducted in private.

Jodi Arias’ attorneys say several people are unwilling to testify on her behalf unless it is done in private because they are afraid of public backlash. They have said that some witnesses at Jodi Arias’ first trial were threatened and harassed for their role in the case.

That first defense witness remains unidentified to the public and did not take the stand again on November 12.

June Shannon reveals Pumpkin’s real father is Michael Anthony Ford

June Shannon has finally revealed who is the real father of her daughter Lauryn “Pumpkin”.

For the first time since allegedly resuming her relationship with convicted child molester Mark McDaniel, Mama June is sitting down for an exclusive interview with ET‘s Brooke Anderson to defend her actions and answer the questions everyone has been asking.

Honey Boo Boo’s mother said:“I have nothing to hide, I have nothing to lose.

“I just want, honestly, to tell my side of the story and let’s move on.”

June Shannon, 35, came under fire last month after reports surfaced that she had rekindled a romantic relationship with Mark McDaniel, who was recently released from jail after serving 10 years for aggravated child molestation.

However, according to Mama June, she has only seen Mark McDaniel twice since his release from prison, once at a coincidental meeting and the second time at an arranged meeting to give closure to her daughter Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon, 14, who was raised believing Mark McDaniel was her biological father.

“Since two months to almost six years, she knew nobody but him,” June Shannon explained.

“She was starting to resent Anna and she was starting to ask me questions. I can’t answer those questions for Pumpkin.”

June Shannon says that she arranged a second meeting with Mark McDaniel so that Pumpkin could ask him questions in an attempt to get closure and move on.

“I was sitting right there with twelve other people,” she told ET.

“It was a conversation that she wanted her answers: what happened, why did he leave, you know, if he was her real father. He admitted to her, no. I had already told her that but, you know, she wanted to hear from both sides of the story.”

Mama June revealed for the first time her claim that Pumpkin’s biological father is also the father of her 18-year-old daughter Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon. His name is Michael Anthony Ford, he is a convicted s** offender who served time for exploitation of minors after being caught on To Catch a Predator in 2005.

“Jessica and Pumpkin have the same dad, but Jessica’s dad has had nothing to do with her over the years,” June Shannon said.

“So, why the hell would I open up that can of worms until today? I lied to my family and told them it was somebody else.”

As for whether June Shannon understands why people were so upset over her being seen with Mark McDaniel, she says: “I understand that…and honestly it’s not like I’m seeing him every day, I promise…I wanted to be able to give one of my other daughters closure and now Pumpkin is happy, that piece of our life is over.”
