Elizabeth Lauten resigns after criticizing Malia and Sasha Obama

GOP aide Elizabeth Lauten has resigned after accusing President Barack Obama’s daughters of lacking class.

Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Congressman Stephen Fincher, gave up her post on December 1.

She earlier criticized Malia and Sasha Obama on Facebook following their appearance in short skirts at Thanksgiving turkey pardon ceremony.

She later took down the post and apologized for her “hurtful words”.

Elizabeth Lauten had also accused Malia and Sasha Obama of looking bored when they stood with their father at a traditional turkey pardoning event at the White House.

While most commentators reported humorously on what they saw as the uninterested expressions of Malia, 16, and Sasha, 13, throughout the ceremony, Elizabeth Lauten was notably more outspoken.Elizabeth Lauten Obama daughters row

Her deleted post reads: “Dear Sasha and Malia: I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play.

“Then again, your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter. So I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the <<good role model>> department.”

The post goes on to advise Malia and Sasha Obama to “rise to the occasion and act like being in the White House matters to you”.

“Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar,” Elizabeth Lauten added.

In her subsequent apology, Elizabeth Lauten wrote: “After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were.

“I’d like to apologize to all of those who I have hurt and offended with my words, and I pledge to learn and grow (and I assure you I have) from this experience.”

She pointed out that she “had judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager”.

Sasha and Malia Obama are among the youngest presidential children at the White House for years.

Sony Pictures unreleased movies leaked online following cyber attack

Over the Thanksgiving weekend five films distributed by Sony Pictures leaked online following a reported cyber-attack on the company.

Among the titles is a remake of classic film Annie, which is not due for release until December 19.

Sony Pictures was reported to have shut down its internal systems last week due to an “IT matter”.

Some have linked the cyber-attack to forthcoming film The Interview, Sony’s comedy about North Korea.

That film does not appear to have been leaked. The Interview Sony leaked movie

However, reports say other high-profile titles have been circulated. Among them Fury, starring Brad Pitt, which was in cinemas in October but is yet to be made available on DVD.

According to research firm Excipio, Mr. Turner, Still Alice and To Write Love on Her Arms are also being distributed and downloaded.

Sony has not confirmed the authenticity of the leak, but was quoted in Variety magazine as saying: “The theft of Sony Pictures Entertainment content is a criminal matter, and we are working closely with law enforcement to address it.”

Little is known about the breach of Sony’s systems last month.

A group calling itself the Guardians of Peace – #GOP – claimed responsibility.

Some reports said some computers of Sony employees displayed a picture of a skeleton, threatening to release large amounts of data from the company.

The early leak of films is considered, by the film industry, to have a devastating effect on the potential success of a title.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer inspires spoofs

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer has amassed more than 40 million YouTube views in 72 hours.

The newly released trailer has also inspired a series of spoofs, including a “George Lucas edition”, which pokes fun at the director’s poorly received prequels.

The parody – viewed nearly four million times – was created by Michael Shanks and is cluttered with extra CGI and a voice-over about trade negotiations.

A Lego version of the trailer appeared within 24 hours of the original.

Pieced together brick by brick and shot by shot, the video recreates shots of a rolling R2 droid and the Millennium Falcon.

The animator also comes up with an ingenious way of replicating the new three-pronged lightsaber.

It has so far been seen two million times.Star Wars The Force Awakens

A third parody takes aim at director JJ Abrams, who has been hired to oversee the renewal of the sci-fi franchise.

Noting his fondness for lens flare (the director took the unusual step of apologizing for over-using the effect in his Star Trek films) it adds glaring reflections to every shining surface in the trailer.

The official teaser trailer – the first look at a film that is not out for another year – has generated reams of media coverage.

It opens with a simple shot of the desert and a mysterious voice (now confirmed to be Andy Serkis) intoning: “There has been an awakening.”

John Boyega then bursts cartoonishly into frame, wearing the suit of a Storm Trooper.

We also see newcomer Daisy Ridley as the film’s heroine and Oscar Isaac as an X-Wing pilot, as well as a long tracking shot of the Millennium Falcon.

The seventh episode of the Star Wars universe, The Force Awakens is due for release in December 2015.

Kirk Douglas dead? People magazine accidentally publishes Kirk Douglas’ obituary

People magazine accidentally published Kirk Douglas’ obituary on November 30.

Under the headline “DO NOT PUB Kirk Douglas Dies,” People magazine accidently posted a pre-written tribute to the actor, who turns 98 on December 9.

The post listed details about Kirk Douglas’s life and career spanning six decades, including his 1956 Vincent Van Gogh biopic Lust for Life.Kirk Douglas obituary People magazine

The obituary, which sparked reaction on Twitter, has been since removed.

It is unclear whether the tribute, which had a date stamp of September 29, had been online for two months.

It read: “Kirk Douglas, one of the few genuine box-office names to emerge just as TV was overtaking American culture in the years right after World War II, died TK TK TK. He was 97 (DOB 12/9/1916) and had been in good health despite having suffered a debilitating 1996 stroke that rendered his speech difficult.”

It is common for media outlets to write obituaries of celebrities or important figures in advance.

In 2008, Bloomberg made a similar mistake when it reported Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had died, three years before his actual death in 2011.

Oryong 501: South Korean fishing boat sinks off Russia’s Chukotka peninsula

A South Korean fishing boat sank off Russia’s far eastern Chukotka peninsula leaving one person dead and at least 52 missing, officials say.

The trawler Oryong 501 became stranded in the Bering Sea at around 05:20 GMT, the South Korean government said.

The 60-strong crew comprised 35 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos, 11 South Koreans and a Russian inspector.Chukotka peninsula

Russian media said seven people had been saved, but weather and water conditions were hampering the search.

The boat sent no distress signal before the incident, the RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing law enforcement officials.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap said the 1,590-tonne Oryong 501 was built about 40 years ago and was operated by Sajo Industries.

Moldova elections 2014: Pro-EU parties take narrow lead over pro-Russia rivals

The Moldovan pro-EU parties have a narrow lead over those backing closer ties with Russia, the latest results from the country’s parliamentary elections show.

With 89% of the votes counted, the three pro-Western parties have about 44%. The opposition has 39%.

No party appears to be able to form a government, and tough post-election bargaining is predicted.

The elections have taken on a wider significance in the shadow of the conflict in neighboring Ukraine.

Moldova and Ukraine have signed far-reaching partnership agreements with the EU, bitterly opposed by Russia.

On the eve of the vote, one pro-Russian party was banned from Sunday’s poll – a move criticized by Russia.

Residents of the Russian-backed breakaway region of Trans-Dniester did not take part in the election.

According to latest results, the three pro-European parties are set to have 57-58 seats in Moldova’s 101-seat parliament, while the two pro-Russian opposition parties are expected to hold 43-44 seats, reports say.

The pro-Russian Socialist Party led with more than 21% of the vote. The Communist Party was in third with almost 18%. The party is a Soviet-era survivor that still uses the hammer and sickle as its symbol, although it is not seen as fundamentally opposed to EU integration.

The pro-EU Liberal Democrats are in second place with 19%. The party wants Moldova to achieve EU candidate status by 2017 and full membership by 2020. Two other pro-Europe parties – the Democrats and the Liberals – are on just under 16% and 9% respectively.

There have been reports that the pro-EU parties may now try to form a “grand coalition” with the communists to keep the country on the European track.

Ahead of the Moldova vote, analysts said poll ratings of the Socialists, who want Moldova to turn its back on the EU and join a Russia-dominated economic bloc, had been boosted by their populist campaigning, including concerts by Russian pop stars.

Turnout was just under 56%, the central electoral commission said, out of a total of 2.7 million eligible voters.

Parties need to get at least 6% of the vote to gain seats in parliament.

Indian sisters fightback video becomes viral

The video of two Indian sisters beating up three men who were allegedly harassing them on a moving bus in the northern state of Haryana has gone viral on social media.

The men have been arrested and charged with assault, police said.

The incident happened on November 28 and was recorded by a passenger on a mobile phone.

Violence against Indian women has been in the spotlight since the gang rape and murder of a student on a bus in the capital, Delhi, in December 2012.

The attack caused outrage and prompted India to introduce stringent anti-rape laws.

The latest incident happened in Rohtak district when the two students, aged 22 and 19, were on their way home.

One of the women told the Press Trust of India news agency that the three young men “threatened us and abused us”.Indian sisters fightback Eve teasing

“One of them touched my sister inappropriately… After a heated exchange, one of the boys called his friends asking him to beat us up. One of them beat my sister while two others caught hold of me,” she said.

The women said they decided to take on the attackers when other passengers did not come to their help.

The sisters said the men pushed them out of the bus when it came to a halt after some distance and attacked them again.

They said they retaliated by throwing a brick at the men who then fled.

Police say they received a call from the women on November 28, and the three men were arrested on November 29.

Senior police official S Anand told The Hindu newspaper that they were contemplating action against the bus driver and his helper.

“The driver was supposed to take the bus to the nearest police station. But he did not do so. The conductor also did not intervene. We are considering legal action against them,” he said.

Correspondents say public abuse of women – called “Eve teasing” in India – is rampant in parts of the country.

“Eve teasing” makes life miserable and even dangerous for women when they go out in public and use public transport.

Australia hit by extreme hot weather

Australia is suffering from extreme hot weather for 13 days.

The stretch with temperatures exceeding 40C in Longreach that ended last week was some of the hottest weather in living memory for the Queensland town.

It was also a new heatwave record for the cattle country town, beating the previous record by four days, according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

Livestock dams began drying up, local companies asked staff to start work early to avoid the worst of the heat and native animals struggled to find water.

It was not an isolated weather pattern. Last year was Australia’s hottest since records began in 1910, according to the bureau.

Thanks to climate change, much of Australia will be subjected to longer, hotter and more regular spells of extremely hot weather, say climate scientists.

Symptoms of severe heat stress include dizziness, headaches, confusion and fainting. More severe outcomes include dehydration, loss of fluids and electrolytes, and kidney and heart damage.

Tennis Australia is reviewing its hot weather policy after the 2014 Australian Open in Melbourne was disrupted by a week-long heatwave in January.

Organizers of the event – the first of four annual international Grand Slam tennis events – implemented an extreme-heat policy halfway through the tournament when temperatures on the outside courts hit 43C.

The roofs on the central arenas were closed when the mercury hit 43.9C, although play continued.

Football NSW, which represents about 220,000 players, has had a hot-weather policy in place since 2011, says the association’s risk manager Michelle Hanley.

Heatwaves are occurring more often because of climate change, says climate scientist Sarah Perkins.

The University of New South Wales researcher, who specializes in heatwaves, says Australia is experiencing different types of extreme temperatures, including hotter, longer and more regular periods of heat.

Gauhar Khan slapped during India’s Raw Star shooting for wearing short dress

Gauhar Khan was slapped during the shooting of reality show India’s Raw Star by a member of the audience who admonished her for wearing a short dress.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man for attacking the Bollywood actress and model during the shooting of India’s Raw Star in Mumbai.

They quoted the man as telling Gauhar Khan that “being a Muslim woman, she should not have worn such a short dress”.

Gauhar Khan’s attacker will be produced in court on December 1.

The incident took place on November 30 during the final episode of the show, reports said.

“A preliminary probe has revealed that someone from the audience started teasing Khan to which she protested. An argument ensued between Gauhar and the man who was teasing her. Things turned ugly when the man suddenly slapped the actor,” The Hindustan Times quoted a police official as saying.

Reports said security men present at the venue overpowered the man and handed him over to the police.

Police have registered a case of assaulting a woman against Gauhar Khan’s attacker.

Gauhar Khan has acted in about half a dozen films and was appreciated for her role in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year.

Hong Kong clashes near government offices

Hong Kong pro-democracy activists have clashed with police near the government offices, in some of the worst unrest in two months of protests.

Protesters fought police armed with pepper spray, batons and water hoses on roads around the camp in Admiralty.

Police say 40 people have been arrested and a number of officers were injured.

The protesters want the people of Hong Kong to be allowed to choose their leaders in the 2017 elections without interference from Beijing.

The Chinese government has said it will allow universal suffrage, but will screen candidates for the chief executive post in advance.

Last week police and court bailiffs removed one of the major protest camps in the Mong Kok commercial district.

The protesters had public support at the beginning, but that is now ebbing as many Hong Kong residents believe the protests are causing too much disruption.

The unrest flared late on November 30, after student protest leaders called on supporters to converge on the offices of Chief Executive CY Leung on Lung Wo Road.

The road is a short distance away from Connaught Road in Admiralty, the major road protesters have been occupying for two months.

Protesters, many wearing hard hats and carrying umbrellas – the symbol of their movement – moved into the area, throwing bottles, helmets and umbrellas towards police.

Police ordered them to retreat, then charged protesters, eventually forcing them out of the area. Police sprayed water to disperse protesters, in addition to batons and pepper spray.

On December 1, government offices were shut and staff were told to stay home. But the roads outside the government site were clear of protesters and open for traffic.

By afternoon government employees were able to go back to work.

The atmosphere remains tense at Connaught Road where hundreds of protesters are still occupying the area amid a police presence.

Hong Kong’s security secretary, Lai Tung-kwow, has blamed students for escalating violent behavior, and defended the use of force by police.

“The police have to take resolute actions, they have no choice … it is their duty to restore law and order,” Lai Tung-kwow told reporters at a press conference on December 1.

Last week more than 100 people – including some key protest leaders – were arrested as the Mong Kok camp, across the harbor from Admiralty, was dismantled.

The latest clashes come after China said it would not allow a UK parliamentary committee to enter Hong Kong as part of an inquiry into British relations with its former colony.

What are the most popular travel study programs for US students

0

Highlight on travel study programs

There are numerous travel study programs options available for U.S. students abroad depending on their needs and interest. Europe has been one the most popular destination for American students, whereby U.K. which shares cultural ties with the America being the preferred destination. The cost, destination, credit transfers, cultural barriers, as well as academic discipline are criteria which may affect popularity of travel study programs.

Internships programs

These programs typically require the partnership between American universities and host universities abroad where there can also be service learning. However, the program emphasizes on the need to seek approval from both institutions prior to the internship program for those interested in cross cultural learning.

Summer time study programs

Host universities abroad make prior arrangements with American universities and students to allow the visiting students to study for the summer program. In most cases, students learn for one semester, and language proficiency is necessary as this makes it easier for the students to understand the subject matter.

Host university sponsor

Study programs classified under the duration aspect are not the only popular options. According to custom essay services, students may visit and study abroad through paying fees in their home universities. This option works well when there are arrangements between the home and foreign institutions. Nonetheless, students have to take care of accommodation and transportation, but since there is credit transfers the program is popular.

Direct sponsorship by U.S universities

This option allows students to study in foreign institutions, but the programs follow a U.S. academic framework.  There are many similarities since students can use credit transfer and follow the same academic calendar to the U.S.  The option also integrates international branches of U.S. colleges and universities.   Even though, students may want to experience different cultural perspectives on learning, the problem of funding is a challenge.  Hence, sponsored travel study programs tend to be popular among U.S students.

Swiss gold referendum rejected by 78% of voters

The Swiss referendum that would have required the Swiss National Bank (SNB) hold 20% of its reserves in gold has been rejected by the majority of voters.

Early projections from Swiss broadcaster SRF show 78% of voters rejecting the change.

Two separate proposals that would have curbed immigration and closed a tax loophole for foreigners were also easily defeated, according to projections.

Under Swiss law, any petition signed by 100,000 voters must go to a national vote. Past referendums have covered topics as varied as gun control, a public smoking ban, allowing shareholders to limit executives’ salaries, and assigning state legal aid to animals that might have suffered abuse.Swiss gold referendum

Gold bugs were optimistic about the vote in early November but in the past two weeks hopes began to dim. On Friday, gold fell $24 to 1167, the lowest since November 14.

The plan’s proponents wanted one fifth of the SNB’s reserves to be in gold, which would have involved buying about 1,500 metric tons in the coming 60 months.

Switzerland’s wealthy residents drawn to the tax haven also looked set to offer their thanks to ordinary voters.

A bid to scrap the “Pauschalsteuer” – a controversial law allowing Swiss residents who work outside to the country to pay tax on their spending, not their income – also looked set to fail just over an hour after polls closed.

Ecopop initiative: Swiss voters reject referendum proposal to cut net immigration

The Swiss voters have decisively rejected the Ecopop proposal to cut net immigration to no more than 0.2% of the population.

Switzerland’s 26 cantons rejected the proposal, with about 74% of people voting No in Sunday’s referendum.

Supporters of the measure argued that it would have reduced pressure on Switzerland’s resources. Opponents said it would have been bad for the economy.

Around a quarter of Switzerland’s eight million people are foreigners.

The measure would have required the government to reduce immigration from about 80,000 to 16,000 people a year.

Under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy, citizens can force a referendum if they muster enough signatures of support.

Switzerland voted in February to re-introduce immigration quotas, in effect opting out of an EU free movement agreement.

The government still has to implement that referendum result, which threw relations with the EU into turmoil.

Two other referendums were also being held on November: one on forcing the central bank to boost its gold reserves and one on scrapping a tax perk for wealthy foreigners.

They, too, failed to garner enough support for the measures to pass into law.

The immigration proposal was dubbed the Ecopop measure, after Switzerland’s 40-year-old Ecopop movement which seeks to link environmental protection with controlling population growth.

Switzerland’s population has grown by over a million in 20 years, and is currently 8.2 million. Some 23% of its inhabitants are foreign nationals, most of them from EU states.

Last year, net immigration stood at 81,000, according to public broadcaster Swiss Info.

Supporters of the measure said restricting immigration would safeguard Switzerland’s environment by reducing the need for new transport links and new housing.

The proposal also included a measure to limit overpopulation abroad by devoting 10% of Switzerland’s overseas aid to family planning in developing countries.

Opponents, among them all the major political parties, argued that the proposals would be bad for the economy because business leaders wanted to be able to recruit skilled labor from across Europe.

They also feared that if passed, the measure could put the country in breach of its international commitments and damage its image.

Switzerland’s population is about 8.18 million – of whom 1.96 million are not Swiss nationals, according to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO). EU citizens make up the vast majority of immigrants.

The largest group of foreign nationals living in Switzerland is Italians; immigration from Italy started more than one hundred years ago, but difficulties getting Swiss nationality meant many families remained Italian.

The second largest group comes from Germany, and the third largest comes from the former Yugoslavia.

Innocent Ricky Jackson released from prison after 39 years

0

Ricky Jackson has been freed after 39 years in prison after a witness said he lied as a boy.

The 57-year-old man, who was imprisoned at the age of 18, came to Cincinnati on November 25 to thank the law project that worked to win his freedom.

Ricky Jackson told members of the Ohio Innocence Project and others at the University of Cincinnati that he would have walked to Cincinnati from Cleveland if necessary to thank the people he says “saved my life.”

The Ohio Innocence Project usually works to free people using DNA evidence but took Ricky Jackson’s case despite the lack of DNA.

Project staff attorney Brian Howe said before Ricky Jackson’s remarks that they had seen many weaknesses in the case against Jackson, and they were skeptical of the witness’ testimony before he told his pastor and then authorities that he had lied.

Ricky Jackson was released from prison on November 21 after a judge in Cleveland dismissed the cases against him and Wiley Bridgeman, 60.

Witness Eddie Vernon, who was 12 years old at the time of the slaying, recanted last year and said Cleveland police coerced him into testifying that the two men and another man killed Cleveland businessman Harry Franks in 1975.

Ricky Jackson was imprisoned for 39 years, serving a life sentence for aggravated murder and other charges.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty has said the case fell apart after witness Eddie Vernon recanted his testimony.

Eddie Vernon said he kept quiet because investigators threatened to imprison his parents.

Ricky Jackson said that he did hate Eddie Vernon at first, but later realized he was just a child. He says he would like to meet with Vernon in private to tell him he forgives him and to thank him.

A fund set up by the Ohio Innocence Project to help Ricky Jackson as he tries to readjust to life outside prison has already raised almost $43,000, project Director Mark Godsey said.

Tugce Albayrak: Germany pays tribute to student killed for helping harassed teenage girls

Germany is paying tribute to student Tugce Albayrak who was killed after defending two teenage girls reportedly being harassed by a group of men.

Around 150 people attended a vigil in Berlin in Tugce Albayrak’s memory on November 30.

President Joachim Gauck has described the student as a “role model”.

A18-year-old man is in custody over the November 15 attack, which left Tugce Albayrak in a coma. Her life support was switched off on Friday.

Tugce Albayrak had intervened when she heard cries for help from the toilet of a fast food restaurant in the town of Offenbach, near Frankfurt, where the two girls were being harassed, German media report.

Later, one of the men returned and attacked her in the car park, striking her head with a stone or a bat.Tugce Albayrak killed in Germany

Tugce Albayrak’s parents made the decision to turn off life support on her 23rd birthday when doctors told them she would never regain consciousness and was brain-dead.

A petition calling for Tugce Albayrak to be awarded the national order for merit posthumously has gathered over 100,000 signatures.

Confirming he would consider the award, President Joachim Gauck wrote to her family to say: “Like countless citizens, I am shocked and appalled by this terrible act. Tugce has earned gratitude and respect from us all.

“She will always remain a role model to us, our entire country mourns with you.

“Where other people looked the other way, Tugce showed exemplary courage and moral fortitude.”

Before today’s “civil courage” vigil on Oranienplatz in Berlin, tributes were paid in Offenbach, with people holding signs which read “Thank you, Tugce”.

Oranienplatz is in the heart of Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, which has a large Turkish community.

Tugce Albayrak, who was from the town of Gelnhausen, also near Frankfurt, was Turkish by origin.

Her attacker, named only as Senal M from the Sandzak region of Serbia, has confessed to striking Tugce Albayrak, German public radio station Deutsche Welle reports.

“It will be a really special moment for me and I can’t wait to share it with everyone

“I can now say <<Yes, I’m playing Glastonbury>>.”

Moldova elections 2014: Contest between pro-EU parties and pro-Moscow forces

People in Moldova are heading to polls to vote in parliamentary elections which are widely seen as a contest between pro-EU parties and those backing closer ties with Russia.

Recent opinion polls gave a lead to the pro-Westerners, but tough post-election bargaining is predicted.

On the eve of the vote, one pro-Russian party was banned from the poll – a move criticized by Moscow.

The elections have taken on a wider significance in the shadow of the bloody crisis in neighboring Ukraine.

The crisis began last November after Ukraine’s former leadership made a last-minute U-turn, refusing to sign a landmark association and free trade deal with the EU – under huge pressure from Russia.

This triggered mass protests in Ukraine that ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, and Kiev later signed the EU deal. But the protests, in turn, led to Russia annexing southern Crimea peninsula in March and throwing support behind separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Moldova – which also signed the EU agreement – has been under growing Russian pressure to change course.

About 2.7 million people are eligible to cast their ballots, electing a single-chamber 101-seat parliament by a system of proportional representation.

However, residents of the Russian-backed breakaway region of Trans-Dniester are not taking part in the election.

Moldovan PM Iurie Leanca’s Liberal Democratic Party wants the country to achieve EU candidate status by 2017 and full membership by 2020.

Its coalition partner, the Democratic Party, is more moderately pro-European.

The most strongly pro-EU and pro-NATO party, the Liberals, left the ruling coalition and went into opposition last year.

The opinion polls predict that the three pro-Western parties may get up to 43% of the vote.

The main opposition party is the Communist Party – a Soviet-era survivor that still uses the hammer and sickle as its symbol.

Poll ratings of another pro-Russian party – the Socialists – have been recently boosted by its populist campaigning, including concerts by Russian pop stars.

Pro-Moscow forces are also expected to pick additional votes after the ban of the Fatherland party. It was barred from the elections on the grounds that it illegally received foreign funding.

The party – whose leader has fled to Russia – denies the claim.

The opposition also hopes to capitalize on the growing economic problems under the pro-Western government in Moldova – one of Europe’s poorest countries.

The situation worsened after a Russian ban on Moldova’s import of agricultural products – including wine, meat, fruit and vegetables.

Swiss Gold Referendum 2014: Switzerland votes on Swiss Gold Initiative

Voters in Switzerland are heading to polls to vote on “The Swiss Gold Initiative” in a national referendum.

On the ballot is a measure to prohibit the Swiss National Bank (SNB) from further gold sales, to repatriate Swiss-owned gold to Switzerland, and to mandate that gold make up at least 20% of the SNB’s assets.

According to analysts, the Swiss referendum is driven by an undercurrent of dissatisfaction with the conduct not only of Swiss monetary policy, but also of Swiss banking policy.

Gold prices took a dive on November 28 as the market geared up for what could be the metal’s own OPEC moment – when Switzerland will vote on whether its central bank should hold more gold and bring back its other gold reserves held in places like Canada and the U.K.

The result of the Swiss vote is expected at 1PM local time on November 30 (7AM Eastern Time). Latest polls show support is fading for that “Save our Swiss Gold” campaign. If the “Yes” camp wins, gold will see an initial jump in prices.

Under such a vote, the SNB would need to accumulate 1,500 tons of gold over five years.

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn of Thailand strips Princess Srirasmi’s family of royal name

0

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn of Thailand has asked the government to strip his wife Princess Srirasmi Akrapongpreecha’s family of their royally bestowed name.

The prince’s decision comes after seven of Princess Srirasmi Akrapongpreecha’s close relatives were arrested in a purge of officials allegedly involved in corruption.

Princess Srirasmi Akrapongpreecha is Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn’s third wife, and the pair married in 2001.

The move is widely expected to be a first step to divorce.

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn was already known to be estranged from the princess, although they continued to attend official functions together.

The purge of Princess Srirasmi’s family over the past 10 days has been widely reported in Thailand.

However, until now the severity of the lese majeste law criminalizing any critical comment about the monarchy meant that no Thai media had pointed out the family connection.

Princess Srirasmi’s uncle, a senior police general, was arrested over accusations of amassing vast wealth through smuggling and gambling rackets.

Four of her siblings and two other relatives have also been held.

The office of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has now sent a letter to the interior ministry ordering her family to be stripped of the royal name he bestowed on them when he married her.

The dramatic downfall of Princess Srirasmi comes at a very sensitive time, analysts say, with the 86 year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej in poor health.

As the Crown Prince’s wife, Princess Srirasmi would have been expected to become Queen when he succeeds his father, a potentially very powerful position given the exalted status of the monarchy in Thailand.

The pivotal position of the monarchy in Thailand’s political order makes the succession an extremely sensitive issue, many aspects of which still cannot be reported from inside the country.

The world’s longest-reigning monarch, King Bhumibol has been on the throne in Thailand since 1946.

Malia and Sasha Obama criticized by Elizabeth Lauten for Thanksgiving outfits and attitude

0

First daughters Malia and Sasha Obama have been called disrespectful and classless by Republican Elizabeth Lauten for their attitude and clothes at this year’s Thanksgiving turkey pardoning ceremony.

Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Republican congressman Stephen Fincher, made her comments in a Facebook post.

Her comments were heavily criticized and subsequently deleted.

Elizabeth Lauten has apologized for her “hurtful words”.

She attacked President Barack Obama’s girls over their choice of short skirts for the annual turkey pardoning event at the White House, and also for looking bored.

Malia, 16, and Sasha, 13, stood next to President Barack Obama during the ceremony.

Elizabeth Lauten said that the girls should “try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play”.

“Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar,” she added.

Elizabeth Lauten’s comment caused outrage on social media, amid accusations that she was “shaming” teenage girls.

Swiss referendum on immigration quotas

Swiss people are voting in a referendum on measures aimed at severely restricting immigration.

The ballot marks the second time this year that the non-EU country has held a referendum on immigration.

Last February voters narrowly backed the reintroduction of quotas, effectively opting out of a free movement agreement with Brussels.

The new proposal, known as Ecopop, goes much further, limiting net immigration to just 0.2% of the overall population.

Switzerland’s population is just 8.2 million – but that is still more than a million more than it was 20 years ago.

While unemployment is low and living standards are high, many Swiss worry about overcrowding and environmental degradation.

Supporters of the Ecopop initiative say restricting immigration will safeguard Switzerland’s environment by reducing the need for new transport links and new housing.

Ecopop also aims to limit overpopulation abroad, by devoting 10% of Switzerland’s overseas aid to family planning in developing countries.

Opponents, among them all the major political parties, say the proposals will be bad for the economy – 25% of the Swiss workforce is foreign, and business leaders want to be able to recruit skilled labor from across Europe.

Meanwhile, many environmental groups argue that if the Swiss really want to protect their environment, they should start by adjusting their own lifestyles.

Opinion polls show a close vote, with latest indications suggesting that while many Swiss are worried about immigration, the Ecopop measures may be a step too far.

Darren Wilson resigns from Ferguson police

Officer Darren Wilson, who fatally shot unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9, has resigned from police force, his lawyer Neil Bruntrager says.

Neil Bruntrager told media the resignation was effective immediately.

Darren Wilson himself has been quoted by as saying he had taken the step because of threats of violence if he stayed.

Ferguson and other US towns and cities saw rioting after a jury decided Darren Wilson, 28, should not be charged.

The August 9 shooting in the St Louis suburb and last week’s state grand jury decision triggered a nationwide debate over relations between black communities and law enforcement.

The St Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper said Darren Wilson had decided to step down after his police department received threats that violence would follow if he stayed on as an employee.

The newspaper published what it said was his resignation letter, which read: “I have been told that my continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that I cannot allow.

“For obvious reasons, I wanted to wait until the grand jury made their decision before I officially made my decision to resign.

“It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal.”

In a subsequent telephone interview on Saturday evening, the paper quoted Darren Wilson as saying: “I’m resigning of my own free will. I’m not willing to let someone else get hurt because of me.”

He added that resigning was “the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do”.

Earlier this week, Darren Wilson told media that before the shooting, Michael Brown had pushed him back into his car, hit him and grabbed at his drawn gun, and said that he felt “like a five-year-old holding on to Hulk Hogan”.

The policeman said he had feared for his life.

Michael Brown’s supporters said he was attempting to surrender to the policeman when he was shot. Some witnesses said the teenager, who was unarmed, had his hands up.

However, the state prosecutor said physical evidence had contradicted some of the witness statements.

Michael Brown was killed after being shot six or seven times.

Many in the African-American community had called for Darren Wilson to be charged with murder, but after three months of deliberation a Missouri grand jury – of nine white and three black members – made no recommendation of charges.

The decision means Darren Wilson will not face state criminal charges over the shooting.

The US justice department has also launched a federal investigation into whether Darren Wilson violated Michael Brown’s civil rights.

Malaysia Airlines removes offensive year-end promotion tweet

0

Malaysia Airlines apologized for a year-end promotion tweet that draw anger after it inadvertently drew parallels with the still-missing MH370 flight.

“Want to go somewhere but don’t know where?” read the post on Twitter that was meant to promote special deals by Malaysia Airlines, prompting scorn from online users.

Malaysia Airlines said the tweet “was intended to inspire travelers during this holiday period to explore destinations and deals” it was offering.

“Unfortunately, it unintentionally caused offence to some, and we have since removed the tweet,” it said in a brief statement.

It is the second time Malaysia Airlines, which has been devastated by the loss of 537 people in two air tragedies this year, has run into criticism over its advertising recently.

In September, the airlines said it had changed the name of a ticket-sale promotion that invoked an “inappropriate” death reference by asking travelers which places were on their “Bucket List”.

Bookings have plummeted due to the two disasters.

MH370 vanished in March with 239 passengers and crew aboard when it inexplicably diverting from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing course. It is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean, but no trace has been found.

MH17 went down in July – believed hit by a surface-to-air missile – in rebellion-torn eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 aboard.

Malaysia Airlines said on November 28 its Q3 loss widened 54% year-on-year in the wake of the disasters that have sent its business into a tailspin and prompted a government rescue.

Bladder cancer breakthrough: New immunotherapy drug for terminal patients

0

According to a recent study, an antibody drug which makes a wide range of cancers more vulnerable to the body’s immune system is “exciting” and may mark a new era.

The new drug strips cancer cells of the “camouflage” they use to evade attack by the immune system.

In the most detailed study, published in Nature, some patients completely recovered from terminal bladder cancer.

The immune system is in delicate balance with some chemicals in the body encouraging a strong vigorous response, while others try to dampen it down.

Tumors can hijack this system to hide from the immune system.

One trick which tumors use is a protein called PD-L1 which is normally used to prevent autoimmune diseases.

An international team of scientists has been trialing a drug to block PD-L1, produced by the company Roche, on 68 people with advanced bladder cancer.

All the patients had tried chemotherapy and had been given six-to-eight months to live.

More than half the patients, whose tumors were using PD-L1 to hide from the immune system, showed signs of recovery.

In two patients there were no signs of cancer after the treatment.

One in ten patients responded to the experimental therapy even if PD-L1 was not present in the tumor.

Dr. Tom Powles, an oncologist at the Barts Cancer Institute at Queen Mary University of London and part of the research team, said: “There have been no new drugs for bladder cancer for 30 years.

“The tumors have developed a camouflage layer, PD-L1, and by removing the camouflage the tumor becomes identifiable.

“A subgroup of patients seems to do exceptionally well.”

Dr. Tom Powles is funded by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and receives no money from Roche.

The drug has been given “breakthrough therapy” status in the US and could be used widely by patients there at the end of 2015, if a larger trial shows the same results.

Much larger randomized clinical trials would be needed in order for the experimental therapy to be used in Europe.

A similar set of trials to boost the immune attack revealed at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago in June, showed similar therapies could improve survival in advanced skin cancer.

In a trial of 411 patients evaluating a drug, pembrolizumab – 69% of patients survived at least a year.

Those results were described as having the “potential to be a paradigm shift for cancer therapy”.

A separate study of 175 patients, led by Yale University in the US, showed responses to the drug in patients with non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, renal cell carcinoma and other cancers.
