Suge Knight charged with murder and attempted murder following hit-and-run incident

Music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight has been charged with murder and attempted murder following a fatal hit-and-run incident.

Suge Knight’s lawyer says it was an accident which happened as his client tried to escape an attack last week.

Prosecutors allege that the record producer intended to run over a friend and another man after an argument.

On February 2, a court commissioner revoked the $2 million bail after police said the defendant had a violent past and could intimidate witnesses.

Suge Knight is scheduled to appear in court in Compton, Los Angeles, on February 3, facing four charges under his real name Marion Hugh Knight.

His friend, Terry Carter, 55, was killed and Cle “Bone” Sloan, 51, injured in the incident in Compton, in Los Angeles County.

Suge Knight founded Death Row Records in the 1990s, but later declared bankruptcy and the company was sold at auction.

He helped launch the careers of artists including Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg.

Suge Knight has previously been convicted of armed robbery and assault with a gun.

Barack Obama seeks tax rises in $4 trillion budget proposal

President Barack Obama has sent a $4 trillion budget proposal to Congress with significant tax rises, primarily on companies and the wealthy.

Barack Obama’s plan would use new taxes to remove current budget caps and fund infrastructure projects.

The president spoke at the US homeland security department, which faces a funding shortage at the end of February.

However, analysts say it is unlikely the Republican-controlled Congress will approve the proposals.

Barack Obama’s spending plan is considered the opening gambit in an expected negotiation with Congress.

Republican budget officials are expected to put forward their own proposals in a few weeks time.

GOP representatives accuse Barack Obama of reverting to tax-and-spend policies without changing the biggest areas of government spending – social security and health programs.

Paul Ryan, the Republican’s top budget official, said Barack Obama was exploiting “envy economics” in his proposal.

“This top down redistribution doesn’t work,” Paul Ryan told NBC.

Among the new tax rises is a one-off 14% tax on US profits made overseas, as well as a 19% tax on any future profits as they are earned.

No tax is currently due on foreign profits as long as they are not brought into the US.

The $238 billion raised would be used to fund infrastructure projects across the country.

According to Audit Analytics, US companies made $2.1 trillion-worth of profits abroad at April 2014.

Among Barack Obama’s proposals are:

  • tax credits for child care and “second earners”
  • earners taxed at the top rate would only be able to take tax deductions at a lower rate
  • an increase in capital gains tax from 20% to 28%
  • a tax rise on cigarettes over 10 years from $1.01 per pack to $1.95

Barack Obama also called for an end to spending caps on the military and most domestic agencies first put in place in 2011.

Calling the caps “mindless austerity”, Barack Obama’s budget eliminates such limits for the six years they are scheduled to remain in place, representing a spending increase of $362 billion.

Barack Obama warned congressional Republicans on February 2 that he would not accept lifting caps on national security spending without doing the same for domestic programs.

“I will not accept a budget that severs the vital links between our national security and our economic security,” he said.

“Those two things go hand in hand.”

The spending plan also includes proposals Barack Obama promised in his State of the Union speech last month, including free community college tuition.

Oil prices rally continue as investors pile in

Oil prices rallied on February 2 as investors speculated that the falling cost of crude may have ended.

Brent crude was up 1.3% at $53.65 a barrel, having reached $55, while US oil rose 1.7% to $48.52.

It followed the release of data showing that US demand for leasing oil rigs was slowing, suggesting that producers might be preparing to cut output.

On January 30, data showed that more than 90 US oil rigs were idled, the largest number to be wound down in a single day since the mid-1980s.

Today’s price rise extended the gains made last week, and boosted oil and gas share prices. Tullow Oil rose almost 7%, while BG Group climbed 5%.

Since last summer, the prices of Brent and UK West Texas Intermediate Crude have fallen from above $100 a barrel.

Meanwhile, Exxon, the world’s largest publicly traded oil company, saw profit in the fourth quarter fall to $6.57 billion, from $8.35 billion for the same three months the year before.

Oil and natural gas production fell 3.8%, Exxon said.

At the coronation ceremony, on January 30, runner-up Sheislane Hayalla hugged winner Carol Toledo when she was first announced as queen, but a few seconds after the crown was gracefully placed on her rival’s head, Hayalla snatched it, threw it to the stage floor and left in a rage.

Sheislane Hayalla accused Carol Toledo of having bought the title.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 has secured its claim to this year’s best animated feature Oscar by taking top honors at the 42nd Annie Awards at the University of California, Los Angeles’ Royce Hall.

The DreamWorks sequel was named best feature at the event, which honored 2014’s best achievements in animation.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 also took home awards for Dean DeBlois’s direction, feature character design, storyboarding and music.

The Lego Movie won a writing award, while Ben Kingsley was recognised for his voice work in The Boxtrolls.

Based on the book series by Britain’s Cressida Cowell, How to Train Your Dragon 2 follows the adventures of a young Viking called Hiccup and his pert dragon Toothless.

The original How to Train Your Dragon was named best animated feature at the 2011 Annies but lost out at the Oscars to Toy Story 3.

Earlier, Frozen star Idina Menzel kicked off proceedings at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona with the traditional rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.

She avoided the controversy that dogged such previous performers as Janet Jackson, whose infamous “wardrobe malfunction” made headlines around the world in 2004.

Katy Perry marked the occasion by having XLIX – the Latin numeral for 49, marking the 49th Super Bowl – tattooed on one of the fingers of her right hand.

Ebola experimental vaccine first large-scale trial is due to begin in Liberia.

The potentially preventative medicine was taken under strict security to a secret location in the West African country.

Scientists aim to immunize 30,000 volunteers, including front-line health workers.

More than 8,500 people have died in the Ebola outbreak, the vast majority in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The trial beginning on February 2 will involve injecting a small amount of the strain of the Ebola virus into 12 volunteers in order to trick the body into producing an immune response.

However, it is not yet clear whether this will really offer protection against the disease.

Community nurses are being trained in how to monitor volunteers in the months after they have had their injections.

In the meantime, parts of the largest Ebola treatment centre in the world, on the edge of Monrovia, are being knocked down.

The number of Ebola cases in Liberia has been steadily decreasing – in recent months, there have only been five confirmed cases across the country.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says the epidemic has entered a “second phase” with the focus shifting to ending the epidemic.

The survival rate of the current Ebola outbreak is around 40%.

Al-Jazeera reporter Peter Greste was freed from Egypt prison and deported on February 1.

After 400 days behind bars, Peter Greste landed safely in Cyprus, on his way to his native Australia.

Peter Greste will not rest until his colleagues are released from prison in Egypt, his family says.

He was arrested in 2013 and tried on charges that included spreading false news and aiding the Muslim Brotherhood.

Two al-Jazeera colleagues, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, remain jailed.

Mohamed Fahmy, who holds dual Egyptian and Canadian citizenship, may be freed after having his Egyptian nationality revoked, presidential sources said.

But there are still concerns about Baher Mohamed, an Egyptian who holds no dual nationality.

Peter Greste spoke about his concerns for his colleagues to his family after his release.

Speaking at a press conference in the Australian city of Brisbane, brother Andrew Greste said: “We want to acknowledge that Peter’s two other colleagues are still there.”Peter Greste jailed in Egypt

His father Juris Greste said that they felt very deeply for those left behind.

Andrew Greste also thanked all those who had supported his brother and worked for his release.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Peter Greste had told her in a telephone conversation that he was eager to return to his family in Brisbane.

“He was immensely relieved and he was desperate to come home to Australia and reunite with his family,” said Julie Bishop.

“From my discussion with him, he was very keen to be back on a beach and lying in the sun in Australia.”

The three journalists had been accused of collaborating with the banned Muslim Brotherhood after the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi by the military in 2013.

All the defendants denied the charges against them and said their trial was a sham.

Mohamed Fahmy and Peter Greste were sentenced to seven years in prison and Baher Mohamed to 10. Their convictions were overturned on January 1, but the men remained in custody pending a retrial.

Peter Greste’s release on Sunday came after a long international campaign.

His family said that he would return to Australia when he felt ready.

His mother, Lois Greste, said she had been quietly dreaming about this moment.

The first hints of Peter Greste’s release came in November, when President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said he was considering granting pardons to the two foreign al-Jazeera journalists.

He had earlier signed a decree on repatriating foreign prisoners.

Peter Greste’s release was eventually confirmed by a statement issued by the Egyptian interior ministry.

According to campaign group Reporters Without Borders, there are currently 165 journalists imprisoned around the world, in countries including China, Iran, Eritrea, Egypt, Uzbekistan and Russia.

According to new reports, Bobbi Kristina Brown is brain dead and on a ventilator after being found unconscious in a bathtub at her Atlanta home on Saturday, January 31.

Another source told MediaTakeOut.com that Bobbi Kristina Brown and her husband Nick Gordon were “staying apart” at the time of the incident.

“[He] got a call from Bobbi Kris and he felt that she was try to hurt herself. So he [and a friend] rushed home, and they found her.”

Bobbi Kristina Brown is in hospital in an unknown condition after being found unresponsive in a bathtub.

Medical privacy laws mean information is restricted, but unconfirmed reports said Whitney Houston’s daughter was in a medically induced coma to reduce swelling on the brain.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, 21, was found on January 31 by her husband Nick Gordon and a friend.

The incident happened less than two weeks before the third anniversary of Whitney Houston’s death.

A post-mortem examination later concluded she died of accidental drowning due to the effects of cocaine use and heart disease.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was found in the bathtub on Saturday morning, Roswell police spokeswoman Lisa Holland said later in the day.

Lisa Holland said that Bobbi Kristina Brown was now at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Georgia, and that she was “still alive and breathing”.

At a later news conference, Lisa Holland said she could not comment on Bobbi Kristina Brown’s condition because of medical privacy laws.

The police spokeswoman also noted the incident’s similarity with the circumstances of Bobbi Kristina Brown’s mother’s death.

Bobbi’s cousin Jerod Brown told Sky News: “She’s pretty good right now, she’s around family.

“We’re just praying for a speedy recovery, that’s it… I’m pretty sure she’ll be getting out of there very soon.”

Jerod Brown refused to comment on reports that his cousin was in a coma.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was born after the singer’s tumultuous 1992 marriage to hip-hop singer Bobby Brown.

A New Mexico toddler has shot his mother and father with the same bullet after pulling a gun from her handbag, police say.

The incident took place in a room at the America’s Best Value Inn on January 31 in Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico.

The 3-year-old boy was apparently reaching for an iPod.

The bullet passed through his father’s buttock and hit his mother, who is eight months pregnant, in the arm. Both parents are said to be recovering.

Justin Reynolds told NBC News station KOB he and his girlfriend Monique Villescas were about to order a pizza when he heard the shot.

“The next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realized I was shot too.”

Justin Reynolds called emergency services and tried to staunch Monique Villescas’s bleeding with towels.

He said: “I was more worried about my girlfriend than myself and anything else that was going on. And my son because I didn’t know if he had shot himself or not. He was shocked and crying. It was traumatizing.”

Justin Reynolds has been released from hospital and Monique Villescas is in a stable condition.

Albuquerque police said the district attorney’s office would decide whether the parents would face negligence charges. The children have been taken into care.

Barack Obama plans to tax US companies on overseas profits

President Barack Obama is planning to close a tax loophole that allows American companies to avoid paying taxes on overseas profits, the White House says.

Barack Obama’s 2016 budget will impose a one-off 14% tax on US profits stashed overseas, as well as a 19% tax on any future profits as they are earned.

The $238 billion raised will be used to fund road projects in the US.

The proposal is one of the main components of Barack Obama’s latest budget, due to be presented on February 2.

The spending plan, including the proposal on overseas profits, would require approval from the Republican-controlled Congress to be made law, something seen as unlikely.

Research firm Audit Analytics calculated last April that US companies in total have $2.1 trillion-worth of profits stashed abroad.

It found US conglomerate General Electric had the most profit stored overseas at $110 billion. Tech giants Microsoft and Apple and drugs companies Pfizer and Merck all featured in the top five.

No tax is currently due on foreign profits as long as they are not brought into the United States.

As a result some companies put their earnings in low tax jurisdictions and simply leave them there.

The White House said its plans for an immediate 14% tax would raise $238 billion, which would be used to fund a wider $478 billion public works program of road, bridge and public transport upgrades.

“This transition tax would mean that companies have to pay US tax right now on the $2 trillion they already have overseas, rather than being able to delay paying any US tax indefinitely,” a White House official said.

The official said that after this one-off tax, the 19% permanent tax firms would have to pay on overseas profits “would level the playing field, and encourage firms to create jobs here at home”.

The tax rate is far lower than the current US top corporate tax rate of 35%.

Novak Djokovic has beaten Andy Murray to win his fifth Australian Open title in Melbourne.

World’s No 1 came through 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-0 in three hours and 39 minutes.

It was a third win over British number one Andy Murray in a Melbourne final and brought him an eighth Grand Slam title.

Andy Murray, 27, has now won two of the eight Grand Slam finals he has played in, having lost all four in Australia.

“I would like to congratulate Novak – it is a fantastic record and thoroughly deserved,” said Andy Murray.

Andy Murray, who underwent back surgery towards the end of 2013 and was playing in his first Grand Slam final since winning Wimbledon earlier that year, added: “I’m closer than I was a few months ago.

Novak Djokovic celebrated by throwing his racquet into the crowd, while a furious Andy Murray smashed his in despair.

Midwest and Northeast brace for new snow storm

A new storm is expected to dump more than a foot of snow on parts of the Midwest, New York and New England, which is still recovering from a winter walloping it received just a few days ago.

The storm is forecast to move into the Midwest on Saturday night and last through Monday morning. It’s expected to be the most widespread storm of the season so far and dump a significant amount of snow from Nebraska to Maine, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s also forecast to be unusually slow-moving, meaning accumulations of between 10 to 14 inches of snow are possible for parts of northern Illinois, Indiana and northwest Ohio. Similar amounts of snow are expected for the Northeast on Monday, February 2.Midwest winter storm 2015

The storm could make road conditions hazardous for those heading to Super Bowl parties, especially in the Midwest, where the most intense period of snow is forecast to hit Sunday right around game time. Combine that with potential wind gusts of up to 40 mph, and drivers could face terrible visibility and snarling snow drifts. The good news for game-day revelers living near public transportation in the Chicago area is that the storm is not expected to be rough enough to shut down train traffic.

Parts of New England are still recovering from a blizzard that threw down a record 34.5 inches of snow in the central Massachusetts city of Worcester, where dump trucks and front-end loaders had to be brought in to move snow.

This week’s storm hit Boston with 24 inches, and Providence, Rhode Island, had about 19 inches.

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters have returned to the streets for their first big rally since mass protests last year.

A large police presence was in force to deter protesters from reoccupying key areas of Hong Kong.

Protesters were not reported to be planning a repeat of the occupations that shut down parts of the city.

Last year’s Occupy demonstrations called for fully democratic elections for the territory’s chief executive.

China has promised the semi-autonomous territory direct elections in 2017, but ruled that candidates had to be vetted by Beijing.

Initial estimates suggested around 3,000 protesters marched through the city’s upmarket shopping and financial districts, watched by about 2,000 police officers.

Many demonstrators carried yellow umbrellas – the symbol of the political campaign.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators had taken to the streets in September last year, demanding political change.

There were violent clashes with police, and the final protest camp was dismantled in December.

One organizer of the latest march, Daisy Chan, told the AFP news agency it would show that last year’s demonstrations were a watershed for Hong Kong.

Before the march police had been wary of reports that there were no plans for protesters to reoccupy public areas, issuing a statement saying: “It is believed that those supporting the illegal occupation are likely to seize the opportunity to reoccupy roads which have been now reopened to traffic.”

Greece’s new PM Alexis Tsipras has said he is confident that agreement can be reached with creditors over repayment of his country’s debts.

Alexis Tsipras said in a statement issued to Bloomberg news agency that he had never intended to act unilaterally.

This week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has ruled out debt cancellation, saying creditors had already made concessions.

Alexis Tsipras’ Syriza party won last weekend’s election with a pledge to have half the debt written off.

The troika is made up of the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Greece still has a debt of €315 billion – about 175% of gross domestic product – despite some creditors writing down debts in a renegotiation in 2012.

Alexis Tsipras said Greece would repay its debts to the ECB and IMF, and reach a deal with the eurozone nations that funded most of the bailout package.

“The deliberation with our European partners has just begun,” he said.

“Despite the fact that there are differences in perspective, I am absolutely confident that we will soon manage to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, both for Greece and for Europe as a whole.”

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, chairman of the eurozone finance ministers’ group, said he welcomed Alexis Tsipras’ comments.

“It is now up to the Greek government to determine its position on how to move forward,” he said.

“Further decisions will be taken jointly in the Eurogroup in the coming weeks.”

In interviews in the German media published on Saturday, Angela Merkel said she still wanted Greece to stay in the eurozone but did not “envisage fresh debt cancellation”.

“There has already been voluntary debt forgiveness by private creditors, banks have already slashed billions from Greece’s debt,” she told Hamburger Abendblatt.

Greece’s current program of loans ends on February 28. A final bailout tranche of €7.2 billion still has to be negotiated but the new government has already begun to roll back austerity measures.

Miley Cyrus is reportedly aware of the whole death hoax, and supposedly thinks it’s kind of entertaining.

This is not the first time Miley Cyrus’ name has been used as a part of an online hoax.
