Kyle Busch breaks legs in Xfinity Series crash

0

Kyle Busch broke his right leg and left foot after hitting an inside wall during the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, February 21.

The driver will miss the Daytona 500 on February 22 and is out indefinitely.

Kurt Busch’s brother sustained a right lower leg compound fracture and left mid-foot fracture in the crash with eight laps remaining. Joe Gibbs Racing said he was undergoing surgery on his right leg.

On February 21, NASCAR’s final appeals officer upheld Kurt Busch’s indefinite suspension for an alleged domestic assault on ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll last fall.

It means the Daytona 500 will not have one of the Busch brothers in the field for the first time since 2000.

Matt Crafton, a two-time Truck Series champion, will replace Kyle Busch in the No. 18 Toyota on February 22 in the season-opening Sprint Cup Series race. It will be Matt Crafton’s Daytona 500 debut.

Malcolm X’s assassination: 50th anniversary marked in New York

Black civil rights activist Malcolm X’s death anniversary has been marked with a commemoration ceremony at the site where he was assassinated 50 years ago in New York.

Activists, politicians and actors were among some 300 people who paid tributes to Malcolm X in Harlem.

They heard a call by one of Malcolm X’s daughters to reassess her father’s importance to civil rights in America.

By the time Malcolm X was gunned down, the Muslim leader had moderated his militant message of black separatism.

He remained a passionate advocate of black unity, self-respect and self-reliance.Malcolm X assassination 50th anniversary

Saturday’s ceremony was held at the Malcolm X & Dr Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, previously known as the Audubon Ballroom.

A blue light was shone onto the floor in the exact spot where Malcolm X, whose real name was El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was gunned down.

This happened when the 39-year-old was preparing to address his followers.

“He was just a young man who gave all that he possibly could,” his daughter Ilyasah Shabazz said.

Malcolm X’s relatives also insisted that his revolutionary rhetoric was still a vital part of the struggle for equality, arguing that he should be remembered more in American history than he currently is.

Three members of the Nation of Islam organization were convicted of his murder.

Ukraine rebels agree to begin to pull back weapons from frontline

Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine have agreed to begin to pull back heavy weapons from the frontline, Russian General Alexander Lentsov, who is involved in implementing the truce, has said.

Gen. Alexander Lentsov said the pro-Russian rebels had signed the orders to complete the withdrawal over the next two weeks, starting from Sunday.

It is not clear whether the move will be reciprocated by Ukraine.

This comes as Ukraine and the separatists exchanged 191 prisoners, a key part of the Minsk ceasefire deal.

It was the first step carried out successfully under the terms of the February 12 agreements signed in Minsk, brokered by France and Germany.

The exchange came as Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington was considering “serious sanctions” against Russia following breaches of the truce, and that a decision would be made in the coming days.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said sanctions would not help solve Ukraine’s crisis.

Meanwhile, thousands of Ukrainians – as well as a number of European leaders – are expected to take part in a “dignity march” in the capital Kiev on February 22, remembering the victims of sniper fire during protests last February.Ukraine rebels ceasefire

Nearly 5,700 people have died since the fighting erupted last April Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, according to the UN.

This followed Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s southern Crimea peninsula.

Gen. Alexander Lentsov, a Russian member of the Joint Centre for Control and Co-operation (JCCC), said: “We have designated February 22 as <<D-Day>> as determined by the agreement from all sides. So from tomorrow [February 22] we will within the period of 14 days observe the agreement on the pullback of heavy weapons.”

He said the leaders of the self-proclaimed rebel Luhansk and Donetsk people’s republics had already signed the orders.

“We hope for Kiev’s participation and help first and foremost,” the general added.

Petro Kanonik, a Ukrainian member of the JCCC, said Kiev had been informed of the rebel move, according to Ukraine’s Ukrainska Pravda website.

The pullout process had been due to start on February 17 and completed by March 3, but Gen. Alexander Lentsov said it would now take until March 7.

Ukraine and rebel forces accuse each other of multiple breaches of the truce, and there were reports of violations around Donetsk and the port city of Mariupol on February 21.

Yesterday, Ukraine’s military and the rebels completed the first exchange of prisoners after the ceasefire. A total of 139 Ukrainian soldiers were freed and 52 rebels.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko tweeted the news of the prisoner exchange, which took place near the front line town of Zholobok.

Some of the government soldiers were wounded and walking on crutches.

Petro Poroshenko originally said 140 soldiers would be freed, and Ukrainian officials said one more soldier would be released in the coming days.

Turkey evacuates Suleyman Shah tomb in Syria

A Turkish military convoy have entered into northern Syria and evacuated a historic Ottoman tomb and the soldiers guarding it.

Turkey’s PM Ahmet Davutoglu said the remains of Suleyman Shah would be moved elsewhere in Syria.

He said troops had destroyed the tomb’s complex, apparently to prevent it from being used by Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

Turkey considers the shrine be to sovereign territory.

Suleyman Shah was grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, Osman the first.

“We had given the Turkish armed forces a directive to protect our spiritual values and the safety of our armed forces personnel,” Ahmet Davutoglu said in televised remarks.

Earlier, in a series of tweets, Ahmet Davutoglu hailed the armed forces for carrying out a “highly successful” operation amid the “inherent risks” of conflict in Syria.Suleyman Shah tomb evacuated in Syria

He said the remains had been moved to Turkey but would soon be rehoused in an area of Syria under Turkish military control, closer to the Turkish border.

The Turkish flag had already been raised over the site, Ahmet Davutoglu said.

There were no clashes with ISIS during the operation, but one soldier died in an accident, he added.

The operation began on Saturday at about 21:00 local time and ended on Sunday morning.

A large convoy, including 600 troops and almost tanks and armored vehicles, passed through Kobane – the city which Syrian Kurdish fighters retook last month from ISIS – and travelled some 20 miles south to the tomb on the banks of the Euphrates river.

Suleyman Shah is believed to have drowned in the river.

The tomb has been permanently guarded by a contingent of about 40 soldiers, who rotate periodically. The site is part of Turkish territory, according to a treaty signed in 1921.

The Turkish convoy was believed to be larger and more heavily armed than usual because of recent heavy fighting between the Kurdish militia and Syrian rebel groups against IS militants.

Since driving ISIS out of Kobane in January, the Kurdish Popular Protection Units and rebels have taken a number of surrounding villages.

They are now said to be only 15 miles from Tal Abyad – the strategically important border town east of Kobane that is used by ISIS militants to cross into Turkey.

ISIS has seized large swathes in Syria and Iraq, proclaiming a caliphate.

Sydney cafe siege report: 18 calls about Man Haron Monis received before attack

The first inquiry into the deadly Sydney cafe siege has been released on February 20, with its findings to shape PM Tony Abbott’s address on national security this week.

Australia’s security hotline received 18 calls about self-styled cleric Man Haron Monis just days before his deadly attack on Lindt Café in Sydney – but none suggested an imminent attack, the report says.

The report says the calls last December related to offensive Facebook posts by Man Haron Monis, who later took hostages at the Lindt cafe.

Two hostages were killed along with the gunman after a stand-off with police.

“Plainly, the system has let us down,” PM Tony Abbott said.

He said he would consider changes to the legal and immigration systems in response to the siege.

“Plainly, this monster should not have been in our community.”

Tony Abbott said Australia would have to reconsider the line between individual freedoms and the safety of the community may have to be “redrawn”.

His comments came as he released the 90-page report conducted by officials from the federal government and the government of New South Wales.

The document says that the 18 calls to the national security hotline were made between December 9 and 12 – three days before the cafe siege.

It says Australia’s security service and police considered that the Facebook posts by Man Haron Monis “contained no indications of an imminent threat”.

“On the basis of the information available at the time, he fell well outside the threshold to be included in the 400 highest priority counter-terrorism investigations,” the review says.

It adds that Iranian-born Man Haron Monis – who first came to Australia as a refugee in 1996 and was granted citizenship in 2004 – was “the subject of many law enforcement and security investigations” in the country before the attack.

He had a history of religiously-motivated activism and called himself a cleric, but officials have said there is as yet no evidence his actions were linked to international Islamist militant networks.

Man Haron Monis was on bail after being charged with dozens of assault charges and with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife, who was stabbed to death and set alight.

Spirit Awards 2015: Birdman wins top prize one day before Oscars

Birdman has won the top prize at this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards – one day before the Oscars.

Alejandro G. Inarritu’s movie won the best feature, best actor for Michael Keaton and for cinematography.

The awards, which honor low budget film-making, were made in a giant tent on Santa Monica beach on Saturday.

Birdman‘s triple win adds to the film’s momentum ahead of Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Alejandro G. Inarritu said he felt “so proud and emotional” to win and praised Michael Keaton and his cast that includes Edward Norton and Emma Stone.Birdman Michael Keaton Independent Spirit Awards 2015

Boyhood – a family drama filmed with the same actors over 12 years – won best director for Richard Linklater while Patricia Arquette was named best actress.

Patricia Arquette, who is strongly tipped to win an Oscar, spoke of the film’s long lifespan.

“People buried their parents, got married, divorced and had babies,” the actress said.

“It was an enormous commitment of time.”

Two other Oscar front runners also walked off with acting prizes. Julianne Moore won best actress for Still Alice in which she plays a woman with early onset Alzheimer’s.

The actress, who undertook extensive research into her role, highlighted the low budget spirit of the film.

“We made the movie in 23 days for $4 million,” Julianne Moore said.

“I brought my own bras and food.”

JK Simmons won best supporting actor for his role as a tyrannical teacher in jazz drama Whiplash.

The role, which he described as “a good fit”, has already drummed up a lot of trophies for Simmons.

Polish drama Ida won best international film.

“We did everything to make a film nobody watches – black and white, the camera doesn’t move,” said director Pawel Pawlikowski as he picked up his prize.

“But miracles happen.”

Oscar goodie bags 2015: Sneak peek inside Nominee Gift Bag

This year’s covetable goody bag, officially titled the “Everybody Wins at the Oscars Nominee Gift Bag”, is being handed out for the 13th year by the Los Angeles-based marketing company Distinctive Assets.

This year’s extravagant bag worth over $160,000 – an amount deemed taxable by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The celebs nominated in the acting and directing categories will all be gifted with an assortment of pricey swag from Distinctive Assets, with the gifts ranging in price from $5 to $20,000.

Goods donated by 59 brands, the most expensive including art, fine wine, jewellery and luxury travel vouchers, are delivered in a box the morning after the awards ceremony to 20 nominees in the acting and directing categories who don’t take home a prize.

Top of the list in terms of dollar is a $20,000 gift certificate to have Enigma Life founder Olessia Kantor fly out for a personal meeting with each nominee “to discuss their 2015 horoscope, analyse dreams and teach them mind control techniques”.Oscar goodie bags 2015

This year’s giveaway reportedly also includes a luxury three-night stay in Tuscany ($1,500), a wildly expensive train ride through the Canadian Rockies ($14,500), a Reset Yourself lifestyle makeover package ($14,500) and a silver necklace engraved with the latitude and longitude coordinates of the Dolby Theater where the Oscars takes place ($150).

Oscar losers will be offered herbal tea lollipops and lean protein bars. Lest despondent actors are tempted to binge on their Live Love Pop healthy popcorn, the bags also contain portion-control plates.

Nor are celebrities encouraged to take any time out of their presumably gruelling fitness regimes, post-Oscars. For those whose new year’s resolutions are on the wane, there’s a PolarLoop 24/7 activity tracker and vouchers for personal fitness sessions with celebrity trainer Alexis Seletzky. Stars exhausted from the ceremony might welcome a quick fix in the form of anti-ageing products, facial repair cream, and acne treatment. Unfortunately, the anti-perspirant and Starlettos heel protectors come too late to save embarrassments on this year’s catwalk.

There’s a “glamping” trip ($12,500), posh French Mediterranean sea salts ($1,500), a Wellness 360 gift pack ($1,200), a Haze vaporizer ($200) and a year’s worth of Audi A4 car rentals ($20,000) thrown in too.

The goodie bags are distributed by Distinctive Asset and are not endorsed by the Academy. In 2006, the Academy voted to bring an end to them after an IRS agreement stated that specified recipients would have to pay taxes on them.

Man survives fall from World’s End in Sri Lanka

0

A Dutch honeymooner has become the first person to survive a fall from the World’s End, a 4,000-foot (1,200-metre) cliff that is one of Sri Lanka’s main tourist attractions, the Sri Lankan military said on February 21.

The 35-year-old man had taken a few steps back to take pictures of his new bride when he flew off the unprotected cliff, army spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said.

“He was extremely lucky because he fell on top of a tree about 130 feet from the top,” Jayanath Jayaweera told AFP.World's End Horton Plains Sri Lanka

“He is the first person to survive a fall from World’s End.”

Rescue troops used ropes to reach the man and winch him to safety. Some 40 soldiers were involved in the initial rescue which was later backed by a military helicopter.

The man had to be evacuated from the area on the shoulders of troops who carried him over a distance of 3 miles to the nearest point at which he could be driven to hospital.

The World’s End cliff is the main attraction at the Horton Plains nature reserve in central Sri Lanka and is a key tourist attraction.

Bobbi Kristina Brown used drugs weeks before she was found unresponsive

Bobbi Kristina Brown was abusing drugs before she was found unresponsive in a bathtub at her Georgia home on January 31, People magazine reported.

Like her doomed mother Whitney Houston, Bobbi Kristina Brown, 21, was regularly taking heroin, cocaine and Xanax in the months before she was rushed to a Georgia hospital last month, the outlet reported.

Xanax was one of the drugs found in Whitney Houston’s system after she drowned in a bathtub at a Beverly Hills hotel three years ago.Bobbi Kristina Brown used drugs

A source told the magazine that Bobbi Kristina Brown, in the weeks before the tragedy at her home in Roswell, Georgia, was “distraught” about the coming third anniversary of her mother’s death.

Bobbi Kristina Brown was also in and out of rehab for her demons – including heavy drinking – since Whitney Houston’s death, the source indicated.

She was hospitalized for depression almost immediately after Whitney Houston passed away.

Toxicology reports on Whitney Houston showed the singer had marijuana, Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril and the OTC medication Benadryl in her system at the time of her death.

Bobbi Kristina Brown remains in a medically-induced coma at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta three weeks after she was discovered by her boyfriend Nick Gordon.

Ray J enters Amber Rose vs. Kardashians battle

Ray J has entered the Amber Rose vs. Kardashians war after Rose referenced his infamous tape with Kim Kardashian.

The singer took to Instagram and posted the famous moment in The Godfather Part III when Michael Corleone declares: “Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in!”

Few days ago, Amber Rose slammed the Kardashian family in an interview, calling Kim “fake” and saying Tyga should be ashamed for dating “baby” Kylie Jenner, who is 17 years old.Amber Rose and Ray J

Khloe Kardashian then attacked Amber Rose, telling her to “stop talking” about the family and pointing out that Rose was a stripper when she was 15.

Amber Rose fired back, claiming she was just trying to support her family, much as Kim Kardashian did when she and Ray J made their famous tape.

On February 20, Kanye West reignited the war of words with a Power 105 “Breakfast Club” sit-down, during which he joked about Amber Rose: “If Kim had dated me when I first wanted to be with her, there wouldn’t be an Amber Rose, you know what I’m saying?”

Kanye West then called Amber Rose dirty, declaring: “It’s very hard for a woman to want to be with someone that’s with Amber Rose. I had to take 30 showers before I got with Kim.”

Maureen McDonnell sentenced to one year in jail in corruption case

0

Maureen McDonnell has been sentenced to one year and one day in jail for her part in a corruption case, a court has ruled on February 20.

Virginia’s former First Lady was convicted, alongside her husband Bob McDonnell, for taking more than $165,000 in exchange for promoting a vitamin firm.

Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was sentenced in January to two years in prison.

Bob and Maureen McDonnell remain free pending an appeal against their convictions.

In court, Maureen McDonnell apologized to her family and Virginians, saying said she takes full responsibility for her mistakes.

Photo AP

“I would ask in your sentence today that you consider the punishment I’ve already received,” she said.

“My marriage is broken, my family is hurting and my reputation is in shatters.”

The six-week trial exposed the McDonnell family’s strained marriage and shaky finances.

Jurors heard the former governor was in financial need and traded on his position to win gifts of travel and cash from Star Scientific chief executive Jonnie Williams, in exchange for promoting his company’s nutritional supplements.

Jonnie Williams testified, under immunity, that Maureen McDonnell asked him for money and to pay for high-end shopping trips, offering to connect him to the governor in return.

Defense lawyers argued the McDonnells could not have conspired to extract bribes from Jonnie Williams because they were barely communicating.

Prosecutors had requested an 18-month prison term, while the defense requested 4,000 hours of community service and probation.

On February 20, Judge James Spencer called the case “puzzling and bizarre”.

He said there appeared to be two versions of Maureen McDonnell – a loving mother and devoted wife but also the first lady “who belittled and terrorized employees” at the Virginia executive mansion.

Greece bailout: PM Alexis Tsipras hails Brussels agreement and warns of real difficulties

Greece’s anti-austerity PM Alexis Tsipras has warned of “real difficulties” ahead, as his government faces February 23 deadline to submit a list of reforms to lenders.

Under a deal agreed on February 20, the list must be approved by the international creditors in order for Greece to secure a four-month extension of its bailout.

“We won a battle, not the war,” Alexis Tspiras said on February 21.

The deal is widely regarded as a major climb down for the prime minister, who won power vowing to reverse budget cuts.

Alexis Tsipras hailed the agreement as a “decisive step” that “achieved much” towards ending austerity, but added: “We have a long and difficult road ahead.”

The Greek cabinet is due to meet to discuss it on February 21.Alexis Tsipras Greece debt deal

No details have emerged about the potential list of reforms, which must be approved before eurozone members ratify the bailout extension on Tuesday.

Analysts say a collapse of the deal would revive fears of an exit from the euro, a so-called “grexit” – something both the EU and Greece say they want to avoid.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble stressed on February 20 that there would be no payment of new funds to Greece until the conditions of the deal had been met.

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said he would work night and day until February 23 to devise the list of reforms.

“If the list of reforms is not agreed, this agreement is dead,” he admitted.

The Greek Communist Party (KKE) accused the coalition, which is led by its far-left rivals Syriza, of extending the bailout without getting the loan conditions changed.

“Ultimately the bill will be footed by the people, as it happened with all previous governments,” KKE leader Dimitris Koutsoumbas said.

The Greek government is already in trouble with its voters for seeking the bailout extension at all – something it swore it would never do.

Jason Momoa first picture as Aquaman unveiled

Zack Snyder has unveiled the first picture of actor Jason Momoa in character as Aquaman, from his forthcoming film Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The director tweeted the picture adding: “There is only one true King. #unitetheseven.”

It is thought to refer to DC Comics’ seven-strong Justice League; Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter.

Batman V Superman is due in cinemas March 2016.Jason Momoa as Aquaman

Momoa – who played Khal Drago in hit series – will then appear in Zack Snyder’s two Justice League films in 2017 and 2019, as well as his own Aquaman movie in 2018.

Aquaman is the ruler of the seven seas, which comic book fans have speculated could also be what Zack Snyder’s “#unitetheseven” reference means.

Zack Snyder kicked off the DC Comics Shared Universe films with 2013′s Man of Steel and other spin-offs are scheduled, with the Justice League films uniting the characters in a similar way to Marvel’s Avengers.

According to IMDB, other films planned include Suicide Squad in 2016, Wonder Woman in 2017, The Flash in 2018, Shazam in 2019, Cyborg and Green Lantern in 2020.

Batman v Superman wrapped principal photography in December 2014 and will be released on March 25, 2016.

Zack Snyder has previously used his Twitter feed to tease images from the movie, including Ben Affleck as Batman and the new look Batmobile.

Oscars 2015: American Sniper and Birdman top illegal downloads since nomination

According to a recent study, Oscar nominees American Sniper and Birdman have seen a surge in online piracy rates since nomination.

The report was carried out by Irdeto, a Netherlands-based company that sells piracy controls to the pay-TV sector.

It used “crawler” software to monitor downloads via Bittorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing services around the world and says its figures represent the minimum number of illegal downloads.American Sniper online piracy

As part of the study, the company compared the amount of piracy in the week before nominations with the week after.

Selma, Wild, American Sniper, Still Alice and Birdman saw some of the biggest swings in popularity, and each accounted for more than 100,000 downloads.

By contrast, two other films that had been tipped for the awards but failed to secure nominations in the major categories did not experience similar demand: Mr. Turner has been downloaded 9,086 times since January 15, and Inherent Vice has been downloaded 53,008 times, according to the study.

Amber Rose responds to Kanye West’s 30 showers joke on Twitter

After Kanye West joked during The Breakfast Club interview on February 20 that he “had to take 30 showers” after dating Amber Rose before Kim Kardashian would be with him, Rose fired back on Twitter.

“If Kim had dated me when I first wanted to be with her there wouldn’t be an Amber Rose,” Kanye West said during radio interview.

“It’s very hard for a woman to wanna be with someone that’s with Amber Rose. I had to take 30 showers before I got with Kim,” the rapper said.

Referring to Kim Kardashian’s infamous tape, Amber Rose wrote on Twitter: “Wait 30 showers? But Kim let Ray J… on her…. Never mind.”

She continued: “@kanyewest This is my moment to let the world know who u really are and the things you’ve done to me.

“After all these years I never snitched on u and I don’t plan on starting now. We once loved each other so I won’t do u like that. I’ll leave that up to the Kartrashians to humiliate u when they’re done with u.”

Amber Rose went on: “I’m always so quiet and just a cool fun girl. The funny thing is I’m all for a woman making something out of nothing. Ppl make mistakes in life trust me I have. But when u bully other ppl and ur not perfect its so f—–. I own up to every piece of my life.”

Great Lakes frozen 2015: Nearly 81% of lakes’ surface covered with ice for second consecutive year

Most of the Great Lakes surface has frozen for the second consecutive winter.

Nearly 81% of the lakes’ surface area was covered with ice, the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory reported on February 20.

That was down slightly from more than 85% on February 19.Lake Erie frozen 2015

Temperatures have plunged this month, nearly doubling over the past couple of weeks.

Records show the lakes’ most widespread freeze was 94.7% in 1979. The ice cover topped out at 92.2% in March 2014.

The ice blanket reaches across more than 90% of Lakes Superior, Huron and Erie, while Lakes Michigan and Ontario are more than halfway covered.

It has produced some spectacular visual images, from ice caves along the Lake Michigan shoreline to a glacial buildup making it appear that Niagara Falls had frozen in place.

NASCAR: Kurt Busch indefinitely suspended after assaulting ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll

0

Kurt Busch has been indefinitely suspended by NASCAR after a court ruling that he had probably physically abused his former girlfriend Patricia Driscoll.

The move means Kurt Busch will miss NASCAR’s premier event – the Daytona 500 – on February 22.

A judge in Delaware earlier ruled that it was more likely than not that Kurt Busch abused Patricia Driscoll by “manually strangling her” and smashing her head into a wall last year.

Kurt Busch, 36, was the 2004 Sprint Cup winner.

“Given the serious nature of the findings and conclusions made by the Commissioner of the Family Court of the State of Delaware, NASCAR has indefinitely suspended driver Kurt Busch, effective immediately,” a NASCAR statement said.Kurt Busch and Patricia Driscoll

“He will not be allowed to race nor participate in any NASCAR activities until further notice,” it said, adding that the driver was aware of the decision.

Patricia Driscoll alleges Kurt Busch grabbed her by the neck in a motor home at Dover International Speedway in Delaware in September and repeatedly hit her head against a wall.

Kurt Busch – who competes for the Stewart-Haas Racing team – has denied the alleged physical assault.

He is the first driver to be suspended by NASCAR for alleged domestic violence.

Kurt Busch’s lawyer Rusty Hardin said: “We are extremely disappointed that NASCAR has suspended Kurt Busch and we plan an immediate appeal.

“We assure everyone, including NASCAR, that this action against Mr. Busch will turn out to be a travesty of justice.”

In 2012, Kurt Busch was temporarily suspended for violating NASCAR’s policy forbidding swearing in public.

Yemen: Former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi flees Sanaa

Former Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi has fled the capital, Sanaa, weeks after he was put under house arrest by Houthi rebels who forced him to resign.

Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi is thought to have reached the main southern city of Aden.

It comes a day after rival parties agreed on the formation of a transitional council to govern the country.

Yemen has been in crisis since the takeover by the Houthis, a Shia group.

UN mediator Jamal Benomar announced the preliminary accord between feuding factions on Thursday and hailed it as “an important step”.Former Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi flees Sanaa

Abd,Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s supporters in Aden have so far refused to recognize what they denounce as a political coup.

Last week, the governors of the provinces of Aden, Lahij and Mahra demanded the reinstatement of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and reaffirmed their support for Yemen becoming a federation of six regions.

Houthi rebels seized the capital Sanaa in September, before capturing the presidential palace and placing Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi under house arrest. He then quit his presidential post, saying he could not continue under such pressure.

The Houthis dissolved parliament and installed a five-member “presidential council” on February 6.

This sparked security concerns that saw several Arab and Western states close their embassies and remove diplomats.

Since overrunning Sanaa, the Houthis have expanded their control to coastal areas and regions south of the capital.

Their takeover was denounced as a coup by rival political factions and prompted mass protests, mainly from the country’s Sunni majority.

The Houthis have also faced fierce resistance from Sunni tribes and al-Qaeda militants.

Anti-Maidan rally held in Moscow to condemn Ukraine coup

Anti-Maidan protesters rally in Moscow to condemn the “coup” in neighboring Ukraine, a year after the downfall of its pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych.

Russian state media heavily promoted the rally and march with the slogan “We won’t forget! We won’t forgive!”.

Ukraine’s protests ousted pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Russia has since annexed Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula and is accused of backing rebels in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government, Western leaders and NATO say there is clear evidence that Russia is helping the rebels in eastern Ukraine with heavy weapons and soldiers. Independent experts echo that accusation. Moscow denies it, insisting that any Russians serving with the rebels are “volunteers”.

Shelling could be heard on Saturday morning in the city of Donetsk, the rebels’ main stronghold, further fraying the ceasefire which was meant to begin nearly one week ago in eastern Ukraine.

Nearly 5,700 people have died since the fighting erupted in April 2014 and some 1.5 million people have fled their homes, according to the UN.Anti Maidan rally Moscow 2015

The Moscow event is styled as an “anti-Maidan” march – a reference to Ukraine’s pro-EU protests that started on Kiev’s central Independence Square, widely known as the Maidan.

Groups of demonstrators gathered in central Moscow on Saturday under patriotic Russian banners.

One group of marchers in military fatigues could be seen with a placard which read “Maidan is an illness – we’re going to cure it!”

Another placard read “Maidan benefits the enemies of Russia!”

At least 10,000 people are expected to turn out with more than 100 public organizations mustering support, Russia’s NTV news channel reports.

The channel says it will air an interview with Viktor Yanukovych later in the day.

The anti-Yanukovych revolt was triggered by a sudden U-turn that ditched a wide-ranging pact with the EU in favor of closer ties with Russia.

Since Viktor Yanukovych fled Kiev, the new authorities in Ukraine have issued an arrest warrant for him over the “mass murder of peaceful citizens”.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko accused Russia on February 20 of direct involvement in the sniper fire that killed dozens of protesters in Kiev on February 18-20 last year.

Petro Poroshenko was speaking just two days after his army retreated from the key town of Debaltseve, now in rebel hands.

Speaking at a commemorative gathering in Kiev, he said Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov had organized “groups of foreign snipers”. The president cited information he had received from Ukraine’s security services.

The Russian foreign ministry hit back at the claim, calling it “nonsense”.

The rebels took the strategic transport hub, despite the ceasefire signed on February 12, arguing that the truce did not apply to the flash-point town.

An intense rebel bombardment forced some 2,500 government troops to retreat from Debaltseve, and dozens of others surrendered.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a tough statement on February 20 warning that he would not allow any foreign state to gain the military advantage over Russia.

“No-one should have the illusion that they can gain military superiority over Russia, put any kind of pressure on it,” he said.
