Suez Canal Expansion to Be Inaugurate in Egypt

Egypt is preparing to inaugurate a major expansion of the Suez Canal, deepening the main waterway and providing ships with a 22 mile channel parallel to it.

Foreign leaders are due to attend an inauguration ceremony on August 6, promoted by Egypt’s government as an occasion for national pride.

The expansion aims to increase the traffic handled by the canal.

They point out that the volume of world trade has not been growing at the pace needed to deliver the sums Egypt hopes to collect.

Takings from Suez could also be hit by an expansion of the Panama Canal, due to be completed in 2016, which will compete for traffic along the Asia-North America route.

Many Egyptians have questioned whether the money could have been better spent on welfare or other infrastructure work.

The project is estimated to have cost $8.2 billion.

The expansion will allow for two-way traffic along part of the route, as well as for larger vessels overall. The construction of the new lane began in 2014, on the orders of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Security has been tightened for the inauguration ceremony amid fears of attack by militants allied to Islamic State (ISIS).

The militants, based in the Sinai Peninsula, have killed hundreds of people since the military overthrew the Islamist government of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The original canal, opened in 1869, currently handles 7% of global sea-borne trade.

The waterway connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, providing the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe.

Hiroshima Commemorates 70th Anniversary of Atomic Bombing

Hiroshima is commemorating the 70th anniversary of the first atomic bomb being dropped by a US aircraft.

A ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, was held at Hiroshima’s memorial park before thousands of lanterns are released on the city’s Motoyasu river.

The bombing – and a second one on Nagasaki on August 9 – is credited with bringing to an end World War II.

It claimed the lives of at least 140,000 people in Hiroshima.

A US B-29 bomber called the Enola Gay dropped the uranium bomb, exploding some 1,800ft above Hiroshima, at around 08:10 on August 6, 1945.

On that day alone, at least 70,000 people are believed to have been killed. Many more died of horrific injuries caused by radiation poisoning in the days, weeks and months that followed.Hiroshima bombing 1945

People across Japan have observed a minute’s silence to mark the anniversary. In Hiroshima a bell tolled at 08:15 local time – when the US aircraft dropped the bomb that flattened the city centre.

Addressing 40,000 people who attended the commemoration ceremony at Hiroshima’s peace park near the epicenter of the 1945 attack, Shinzo Abe called for worldwide nuclear disarmament.

The prime minister said that that atomic bomb not only killed thousands of people in Hiroshima but also caused unspeakable suffering to survivors.

“Today Hiroshima has been revived and has become a city of culture and prosperity.

“Seventy years on I want to reemphasize the necessity of world peace,” he said.

Shinzo Abe and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matusi were joined by US Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy for the official ceremony of remembrance on August 6, which included silent prayers, the release of doves and a declaration of peace.

Kazumi Matsui described nuclear weapons as an “absolute evil” while urging the world to put an end to them forever.

“To coexist we must abolish the… ultimate inhumanity that is nuclear weapons. Now is the time to start taking action,” he said in his annual speech.

Later in the day, thousands of paper lanterns will be released on the city’s Motoyasu River – symbolizing the journey to the afterlife of those who died.

MH370: Debris Found on Reunion Island Belongs to Missing Malaysia Airlines Plane

Malaysian PM Najib Razak has confirmed that part of the aircraft wing found on Reunion Island is from the missing MH370 plane.

Najib Razak said international experts examining the debris in France had “conclusively confirmed” it was from the aircraft.

The Malaysia Airlines plane carrying 239 people veered off course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014.

It was found on the remote French Indian Ocean island of Reunion a week ago.

In a statement, Najib Razak said the “the burden and uncertainty faced by the families” in the 515 days since the aircraft disappeared had been “unspeakable”.

“We now have physical evidence that flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean,” he added.

French prosecutor Serge Mackowiak later confirmed the wing fragment, known as a flaperon, was from a Boeing 777 – the same make and model as the missing Malaysian airliner.

He said the results of initial tests showed there were “very strong indications” the flaperon was from flight MH370.

Serge Mackowiak said confirmation would come after further tests on the fragment, which would begin on August 6.

Cricket legend Wasim Akram’s car has been fired at Pakistan’s commercial capital, Karachi, police say.

The shooting took place near the National Stadium in Karachi’s Karsaz area on August 5, reports said. The former Pakistan cricket captain was not hurt in the attack.

Police said the incident appeared to be a case of road rage.

“I feel sorry for my client [Walter Palmer]. He is a good man. He did nothing wrong,” he told reporters.

Theo Bronkhorst attacked the legal proceedings: “I think it’s frivolous and I think it’s wrong.”

He added that was hunting was “integral” to the country and had to continue.

“If we do not use wildlife sustainably there will be no wildlife,” Theo Bronkhorst said.

When asked about his prosecution, Theo Bronkhorst said it was “crazy”.

It is unclear whether, the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who is on a private trip, will be able to meet top North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong-un.

In 2000, President Kim Dae-jung held inter-Korean reconciliation talks – later winning a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

India Train Crash: At Least 24 Deaths as Two Services Derail in Madhya Pradesh

At least 24 people have been killed in India after two passenger trains in Madhya Pradesh have derailed minutes apart on a flooded bridge, officials say.

The trains were passing each other near the town of Harda when a flash flood triggered by heavy rain struck the bridge, reports said.

The tracks collapsed and some of the carriages were submerged.

According to officials, at least 25 people have been injured and another 300 rescued.

The Kamayani Express travelling from Varanasi to Mumbai derailed first, while the Janata Express travelling in the opposite direction derailed shortly after.

The bridge crosses the Machak river, about 590 miles from India’s capital, Delhi.

Rescuers worked through the night, mostly in darkness, trying to free those trapped. Divers used gas-powered cutters to access the submerged carriages, officials added.

India has been badly hit by heavy monsoon rains and the tail-end of Cyclone Komen in recent days. More than 100 people have died in flooding, landslides and building collapses.

All the coaches had been cleared and bodies of the victims recovered, Madhya Pradesh railway police chief MS Gupta told AFP news agency.

However, MS Gupta said the death toll could rise slightly. It was not clear if any passengers remained unaccounted for.

Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted that he had ordered an inquiry and that he would make a full statement to the Indian parliament later on Wednesday.

PM Narendra Modi has also expressed concern, and offered condolences to the relatives of those who died.

Safety standards on India’s massive state-run railway network, which operates 12,000 passenger trains and carries some 23 million passengers every day, has been an ongoing concern amid a spate of accidents.

Correspondents say the state-run railway network has a patchy safety record – there has been little investment in upgrading decaying tracks and signals, and India lags behind on anti-collision technologies.

Decades of neglect, low investment and subsidized fares have left the network in a shambles, correspondents say.

Who Is Eligible?

People who are dependent on drugs or alcohol are eligible for this type of procedure. Additionally, those who have hypothyroidism are also often not eligible. However, this does not mean everybody else is. Ideal patients are those who:

  • Have a BMI of at least 40.
  • Those who are at least 100 pounds overweight.
  • Those who have a BMI of between 30 and 40 and have co-morbidities (arthritis, sleep apnea, diabetes or high blood pressure).
  • People who are between 18 and 55 (with some exceptions).

How it Works

Essentially, a lap band is an inflatable prosthetic device made from silicone. Using keyhole surgery, it is wrapped around the top of the stomach. Using a small access port just underneath the skin, the band is then inflated. Then, a saline solution is introduced so that the membrane of the port is not damaged. Because the band is adjustable, people are able to have it deflated or further inflated if their situation changes. For instance, someone who falls pregnant may have it deflated somewhat.

Because the intestines are left untouched, there is no risk of gastric dumping syndrome. Additionally, there is no need to take vitamin B12 or calcium supplements or injections. However, patients do have to think about their own lifestyle choices. They must learn to eat a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet. They should also eat more slowly and make sure that they chew their food properly.

In some cases, people feel that they can still eat quite a lot before they are “filled” for the first time. In fact, this is one of the advantages of the surgery, because it means that weight loss is not so rapid that it cannot be managed. Exact weight loss varies tremendously, however, and it depends on how committed patients are and how well they take to the procedure.

Complications

As with any type of surgery, complications are possible. Commonly, lap band patients regurgitate their food, which is known as “productive burping”. While common, it is not normal and should be seen to as soon as possible.

Less frequently, the passage at the bottom part of the stomach becomes blocked. This is common in those who do not chew their food properly. Other complications include abnormal stools, diarrhea, constipation, stomach obstruction, gastric reflux, vomiting and nausea.

Choosing to have a lap band is a decision not to be taken lightly. Extensive consultation both pre and post-operative will be required in order for it to be a success.

When you enter a hardware or craft store, you may find that the number of adhesives on offer there is so large that you may feel overwhelmed by the multitude of choices. Some of these adhesives are designed specifically for certain tasks. Other adhesives are designed to join different materials together. Hopefully, the following information will be of benefit to you if you are considering purchasing adhesives.

Types of Adhesive

There are six main types of adhesives to choose from:

  1. Wood work adhesives, like Unibond.
  2. Contact adhesives, such as Thixofix and Evo-Stik.
  3. Two part epoxy adhesives, like Araldite.
  4. Cyanoacrylale adhesives, which most people know as “super glue”.
  5. Universal and other general purpose glues and adhesives like Durofix and UHU.
  6. Two part acrylic adhesives, which are more of an acrylic than an adhesive.

There are also a number of specialist adhesives, which are mainly used in repairs. Some are made specifically for glass, PVC or even polystyrene. Others are for hobby work like paper and card glue, wallpaper glue or even bathroom tile glue to name just a few options.

How to Choose an Adhesive

When you are looking to use an adhesive, you need to first know what job you will be using it for. A few other things you should take into consideration include:

  1. What types of materials do you want to glue together? The adhesive you use has to be suitable for this, which is particularly important if the two elements are made from different materials. This can, unfortunately, be very difficult if you are dealing with plastic, because there are many types of plastic out there and it can be difficult to find out exactly which one you’re dealing with.
  2. How strong does the hold need to be? If you think of a wood glue, for instance, the bond it creates is often the same as the strength of the wood itself. However, if you use a plastic or metal glue, it will generally be much weaker. If strength is everything in your specific project, you may want to consider whether there are things you can do to reinforce the materials.
  3. In almost all cases, when you join two things together, you will need to fill a gap. The size of this gap is very important and different adhesives can deal with different sized gaps. For instance, a contact adhesive work on almost any medium sized gap. An eyanoacrylate, by contrast, will only work on a tiny gap. Choosing epoxy glue, finally, is a great idea if you have a wide gap, although epoxy works just as well on narrow gaps as well.
  4. How hot will the item become once it is glue. Some adhesives are so called ‘thermoplastics’, which means they will melt and let go if the temperature rises. If you know this could happen to your item, you may want to choose thermosetting glue instead, as this can withstand hotter temperatures.

Former Texas Governor Rick Perry is not among the 10 Republicans running for president who will take part in the first primetime TV debate.

Donald Trump, Jeb Bush and Scott Walker will take the stage in Cleveland on August 6 with seven rivals.

Fox News selected the 10 most popular Republicans based on five national polls, excluding Rick Perry and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham.

Those two and five other candidates will take part in an earlier debate.

Sandra Bland, who was black, died in police custody three days after a physical confrontation with a white police officer during a traffic stop.

Police say that Sandra Bland hanged herself while being held in the Waller county jail. The family has denied that she was suicidal.

In the last 12 months, the death of black Americans in police custody has caused debate and protests.

The wrongful death lawsuit was announced in Houston by the family of the 28-year-old Chicago native.

In it, they name State Trooper Brian Encinia, the Texas Department of Public Safety in Waller County, the county’s sheriff’s department and two jailers as defendants.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified punitive damages “for egregious acts and omissions” and alleges Brian Encinia, 30, falsified an assault allegation to take Sandra Bland into custody.

The jail is accused of being “reckless” in disregarding her safety and failing to keep her free from harm.

An argument began after Sandra Bland was asked to put out her cigarette and demanding she get out of her car.

Brian Encinia then points his stun gun at Sandra Bland, telling her “I will light you up” after she refuses his orders.

Sandra Bland was arrested for assaulting an officer. On July 13 she was found dead in her jail cell.

The Texas Department of Public Safety had previously said that Trooper Brian Encinia had acted improperly during the stop.

Germany’s top prosecutor Harald Range, who had accused the government of interfering with a treason investigation, has been fired by Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection Heiko Maas has announced.

Heiko Maas said he no longer had confidence in Harald Range, dismissing his statements as “incomprehensible”.

Prosecutors are investigating whether the Netzpolitik website revealed state secrets in articles about plans to step up state surveillance.

The outcry put the German government on the back foot, with senior officials stressing that Germany was committed to press freedom and casting doubts over whether the articles constituted treason.

On August 4, in a rare public row between the German judiciary and the state, Harald Range said the government had asked him to drop an independent investigator from the inquiry, who concluded that one of the articles published did amount to a disclosure of a state secret.

The request, said Harald Range, amounted to “an intolerable encroachment on the independence of the judiciary”.

He said that while the freedom of press was valuable it was not “limitless”.

Minister Heiko Maas responded at a news conference in which he called Harald Range’s comments “incomprehensible and misleading”.

He said his trust in the prosecutor’s ability had “suffered lasting damage” and he had requested his dismissal.

Harald Range, who is 67-year-old, was due to retire in 2016. Munich’s chief public prosecutor, Peter Frank, has been named by Heiko Maas as his successor.

The state investigation, into two journalists at Netzpolitik.org, is currently paused. The journalists have called for the case to be dropped.

Their first story, in February, alleged that Germany’s domestic intelligence agency wanted additional funds to increase its online surveillance program.

A later article in April concerned the spy agency’s efforts to set up a special unit to monitor social networking websites.

Critics have accused Harald Range of double standards, with the prosecutor earlier this year dropping an investigation into alleged tapping of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone by the US National Security Agency (NSA) over lack of evidence.

The head of Cecil the lion is wanted by a Zimbabwe conservation group to be mounted in a case in Hwange National Park, where he was killed last month.

Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said the lion’s head was found in the home of Theo Bronkhorst, one of the co-accused.

The lion’s death made headlines around the world, sending Walter Palmer into hiding.

Johnny Rodrigues told the BBC the plan had been for the head to be sent to South Africa and then on to the US where Walter Palmer would be able to claim it.

He said the Task Force would raise the money for Cecil’s head to be mounted in a glass case and would ask the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority about the plan “once the dust had settled”.

“Any tourist should be able to come and see the cause of all this turmoil around the world,” Johnny Rodrigues said.

Johnny Rodrigues said he has been subjected to a torrent of abuse after speaking out against hunting following Cecil’s death.

“I had to put my phone off. Hunters are using this as a way to get to me, sending insults and remarks by email and by text.”

He said he had been accused of taking money from hunts, a claim he denied.

“I hate hunting, I don’t believe in it,” he said.

Cecil’s six cubs were being looked after by another lion, Jericho, according to Johnny Rodrigues.

“We were expecting the worst and for the other male to come in and take the female and kill the cubs. But Jericho is doing a good job.

“They are following him around and he is playing with them. We are monitoring them all the time and everybody is happy.”

Although they would go on to achieve huge commercial success, it was reported that he was often abusive towards his family.

Three American airlines – Delta, United and American Airlines – have banned the shipment of big-game trophies on flights after the illegal killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe.

They would no longer transport lion, rhinoceros, leopard, elephant or buffalo remains, the airlines announced.

The airlines have not, however, given official reasons for their announcements.

Delta flies direct to a number of African cities and was subjected to an online petition to ban such shipments.

United spokesman Charles Hobart said: “We felt it made sense to do so.”

Cecil the lion was shot illegally in July by American dentist Walter Palmer of Minnesota. Zimbabwe is seeking his extradition and that of a doctor from Pennsylvania, named as Jan Casimir Seski, who is suspected of killing another lion in April.

Walter Palmer is believed to have paid about $50,000 to hunt Cecil, a major tourist attraction in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park.

He says he thought the hunt was legal and was unaware Cecil was protected, but the killing triggered a huge online backlash.

Delta would not answer questions from journalists as to why it made its decision on August 3, nor would it detail how many hunting trophies it has transported in recent years.

“Effective immediately, Delta will officially ban shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies worldwide as freight,” Delta said in a brief statement.

Its announcement came as several other airlines indicated that they are – or soon will be – stopping the transport of all trophy-hunting kills.

As recently as May, Delta said it would continue to allow such shipments.

California Wildfire 2015: More than 13,000 People Evacuated

More than 13,000 people have been evacuated in California as firefighters struggle to contain some 20 wildfires.

Some 9,000 firefighters worked throughout August 3 in steep terrain and rugged conditions, officials said.

The biggest blaze – the so-called Rocky fire north of San Francisco – has already consumed more than 90 square miles of land.

The Rocky fire tripled in size over the weekend, with officials describing its rate of growth as unprecedented.

At least 24 homes were destroyed as the blaze was whipped up by winds that fuelled the flames.

More than 6,000 properties currently lie in the path of the flames.

Four years of drought in California left the landscape tinder dry. Coupled with unseasonably humid conditions, lightning strikes and gusting winds, this has posed a severe challenge for fire fighters and water-dropping aircraft.

While some progress has been reported in tackling the blazes, partially due to a slight fall in temperatures, there is no rain forecast.

Puerto Rico Defaults on Debt Payment

Puerto Rico government has confirmed that it failed to make a debt payment at the weekend, in the latest sign of the economic crisis in the US territory.

It said it did not have the funds available to pay more than $50 million due on bonds.

The ratings agency Moody’s said it viewed the development as a default.

Puerto Rico’s governor said in June that the island’s debts of more than $70 billion were unpayable and that its finances needed restructuring.

The US commonwealth paid only $628,000 of a $58 million payment due on its Public Finance Corp (PFC) bonds, Government Development Bank President Melba Acosta Febo said in a statement on August 3.

Melba Acosta Febo said the reason was because the legislature did not appropriate sufficient funds.

The government said on July 31 that although it would not complete the full payment, it should not be considered a default under a technical definition of the phrase. But that argument has been discounted by Moody’s and other financial institutions.

Puerto Rico has $72 billion of public debt. That makes it by far the most indebted territory or state per capita in the United States.

Unemployment is at almost 14% – more than double the national average – and over the last decade there has been little or no growth, resulting in the economy teetering on the brink of oblivion.

Puerto Rico has been losing 1% (around 30,000 people) a year to Florida and other parts of the US. And it is mainly the economically active young who are leaving.

The government has rejected recommendations made by some economists from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that employers should pay less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

There is also resistance to cutting the bloated public sector, which accounts for almost 20% of the workforce.
