President Donald Trump Will NOT Attend White House Correspondents’ Dinner

President Donald Trump has announced he will skip the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 29.

The event draws celebrities, journalists and politicians, normally including the president.

Donald Trump said he would not attend the event a day after the White House excluded several major broadcasters and newspapers from a press briefing.

The president has frequently described negative news coverage as “fake”.

However, he has not provided any evidence for his claims.

The announcement comes as relations between the White House and some media outlets continue to deteriorate.

On February 24, the CNN, Buzzfeed, BBC and the New York Times were among media groups barred from an off-camera informal briefing held by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

Hours before the briefing, President Trump had delivered a strong attack on what he called “fake news” in the media, targeting stories with unnamed sources.

He said “fake news” was the “enemy of the people”.

President Trump announced his non-attendance at the correspondents’ dinner via Twitter, writing: “I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!”

Bloomberg News and the New Yorker magazine are among media outlets who have said they will not hold their usual after-parties this year.

There have been some calls for journalists to boycott the event itself.

According to the New York Times, every sitting president since 1924 has attended the correspondents’ dinner at least once.

They traditionally make a light-hearted speech at the annual event. Former President Barack Obama attended eight times.

Donald Trump has been a regular at the dinner in the recent past.

In 2011, Barack Obama joked that Donald Trump would turn the White House into a casino if he became president and made fun of rumors, then propagated by Trump, that President Obama was not born in the United States.

Donald Trump was shown on camera sitting stony-faced through a barrage of jokes at his expense, including some from host Seth Meyers, although he said last year that he “loved that dinner”.

Many believe that the 2011 event fuelled Donald Trump’s desire to enter politics and later run for office.

In a statement the White House Correspondents’ Association said it took note of President Trump’s announcement and said the dinner would “continue to be a celebration of the First Amendment and the important role played by an independent news media in a healthy republic”.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Kuala Lumpur Airport Declared Free of Any Hazardous Material

0

The Kuala Lumpur airport terminal, where Kim Jong-nam was killed with VX nerve agent, has been declared free of any “hazardous material” by Malaysian police.

Security teams in protective suits had earlier swept the area.

According to Malaysia’s health minister, an autopsy suggested VX used to kill Kim Jong-nam caused “very serious paralysis”.

Tests show the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was killed with VX.

An Indonesian woman arrested for the murder has said she was given 400 Malaysian ringgit ($90) to carry out a prank.

Siti Aisyah, 25, told Indonesian embassy officials that she was given the cash to smear Kim Jong-nam’s face with “baby oil” as part of a reality show joke.

VX is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the UN. A drop on the skin can kill in minutes.

Kim Jong-nam died on February 13 after two women accosted him briefly in a check-in hall at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s low-cost carrier terminal, known as KLIA2.

Health Minister S Subramaniam said the discovery that the VX toxin was used confirmed the hospital’s autopsy result, which suggested that a “chemical agent caused very serious paralysis”, leading to death “in a very short period of time”.

Kuala Lumpur airport has been swept for toxic chemicals by various specialized police teams, forensic experts, the fire department’s hazardous materials unit and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board.

“As a result of this screening process done we confirm: number one, there is no hazardous material found in KLIA2. Number two, KLIA2 is free from any form of contamination of hazardous material. And thirdly, is KLIA2 is declared a safe zone,” said Abdul Samah Mat, the police official heading the investigation.

There is widespread suspicion that North Korea was behind the attack, which it strongly denies.

A Vietnamese woman and a North Korean man have also been arrested in connection with the killing.

The Vietnamese foreign ministry confirmed that the Vietnamese national being held was 28-year-old Doan Thi Huong, saying she had told officials she thought she was taking part in a television prank.

At least seven other suspects are wanted for questioning by police, including Hyon Kwang Song, 44, second secretary at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The officials said they did not see any physical signs that the suspect had been affected by the chemical.

Malaysian police say the attackers had been trained to immediately wash their hands after the attack.

Some experts have suggested that they might have each smeared two different non-lethal elements of VX, which became deadly when mixed on Kim Jong-nam’s face.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo Responds to Donald Trump’s Negative Comments

Paris’ Mayor Anne Hidalgo has hit back at President Donald Trump’s negative remarks about the city, using Walt Disney characters.

She tweeted a picture of herself with Mickey and Minnie Mouse celebrating Paris’ “dynamism and spirit of openness”.

French President Francois Hollande said such criticisms were “never good”.

At a speech to conservative activists, Donald Trump cited a friend who no longer wanted to take his family to Paris.

The president also criticized Europe’s handling of terrorism, saying that Americans could not let recent attacks happen in the US.

More than 230 people have died in a series of attacks in France since the beginning of 2015, including in January and November of that year in Paris and in Nice in July 2016.

France has been under a state of emergency for more than a year.

Speaking at the CPAC on February 24, Donald Trump sought to justify his crackdown on immigration by criticizing the effect it had had on some European countries.

The president singled out Paris, mentioning a friend called “Jim” who used to be a regular visitor to the city but had stopped going in recent years because “Paris is no longer Paris”.

“Take a look at what’s happening to our world, folks, and we have to be smart… We can’t let that happen to us,” Donald Trump went on.

Anne Hidalgo stressed the inclusivity and energy of Paris, tweeting a picture of her launching a tourism campaign at the Eiffel Tower.

The remarks came as France celebrated the 25th anniversary of the theme park Disneyland Paris.

She also challenged the suggestion that tourist numbers from the United States were in decline, saying reservations were up 30% in 2017.

President Hollande, meanwhile, said Donald Trump’s remarks were no way to behave towards an ally.

“It is never good to show the slightest mistrust towards a friendly country,” he said.

“That is not what I would do towards a friendly country and I would ask the American president not to do it to France.”

In a reference to France’s tighter gun control laws, Francoise Hollande said: “There are no weapons circulating here. There are no people who take weapons to shoot into the crowd simply for the satisfaction of causing drama and tragedy.”

According to figures published by the Paris Office of Tourism, 7,356,945 foreign tourists arrived at hotels in the city of Paris between January and November 2016, 11.9% fewer than in the same period the previous year.

Among American tourists the decline was only slighter smaller – there were 1,387,191 hotel arrivals, down 9.9%.

In the same period there was a slight rise in the number of tourists from other parts of France, of 0.3% to almost 6 million.

The 2015 figures mostly cover the period before the November 13 attacks which shocked the country and left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded.

No figures were given for tourists staying in non-hotel accommodation such as Airbnb.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: Indonesian Suspect Was Paid $90 to Carry Out A Prank

0

Siti Aisyah, an Indonesian woman who was arrested for the murder of Kim Jong-nam, has said she was given 400 Malaysian ringgits ($90) to carry out a prank.

Indonesian embassy officials met the 25-year-old on February 25 in Kuala Lumpur.

Siti Aisyah said she was given the cash to smear Kim Jong-nam’s face with “baby oil” as part of a reality show joke.

Tests show the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was killed with the highly toxic nerve agent VX.

VX is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations.

Kim Jong-nam died on February 13 after two women accosted him briefly in a check-in hall at Kuala Lumpur international airport.

Malaysian police have said that a sweep of the airport for toxic chemicals by a forensic team, the fire department and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board will take place from 01:00 on February 26.

There is widespread suspicion that North Korea was behind the attack, which it strongly denies.

A Vietnamese woman and a North Korean man have also been arrested in connection with the assassination of Kim Jong-nam. At least seven other suspects are wanted by police.

After a 30-minute meeting with Siti Aisyah on February 25, Indonesian Deputy Ambassador Andreano Erwin said: “She only said in general that somebody asked her to do this activity. She only said in general she met with some people who looked Japanese or Korean.

“According to her, that person gave her 400 ringgits to do this activity… She only said she was given a kind of oil, like baby oil.”

The officials said they did not see any physical signs that the suspect had been affected by the chemical.

Vietnamese officials also met their arrested national, Doan Thi Huong, 28, but made no comment.

Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on February 24 that the presence of the nerve agent had been detected in swabs taken from Kim Jong-nam’s eyes and face.

Kim Jong-nam had sought medical help at the airport, saying someone had splashed or sprayed him with liquid. He then had a seizure and died on the way to hospital.

Oscars 2017: Jodie Foster Joins United Voices Rally to Protest Against Donald Trump

Actors Jodie Foster and Michael J. Fox have led an anti-Trump protest two days before the Oscars in Beverly Hills.

The United Voices rally was staged by Hollywood’s United Talent Agency instead of its usual pre-Oscars party.

Jodie Foster said she rarely spoke out in public but that it was now “time to show up”.

Michael J. Fox told the crowd “we are the lucky ones” and that he wanted to “share a bit of that luck” with refugees who want to enter the United States.

The Canadian-born star, who became a US citizen two decades ago, showed only relatively small signs of the Parkinson’s Disease he has lived with since 1991.

Michael J. Fox added that he believed “in the power of the arts to change not just our hearts but the world”.

Jodie Foster, who has won Oscars for The Silence of the Lambs and The Accused, said the rally was “exactly the way to celebrate our industry, to celebrate all of you, to celebrate artistic expression and our commitment to humanities on screen and off”.

The actress did not air her views in public often, she told the crowd during her impassioned speech.

“I’m not somebody who’s very comfortable using my public face for activism.

“And so in my life I’ve found the small ways, much like most of you, to serve and to show up and to give somebody a lift at the bottom of the hill when they’re going to the top.

“But this year is a very different year and it’s time to show up. It’s a singular time in history. It’s time to engage.”

The rally comes ahead of an Academy Awards ceremony that is likely to be highly politically charged.

President Donald Trump has previously been dismissive of celebrity protests and of stars who have criticized him, such as Meryl Streep.

The rally was also shown a video message from Oscar-nominated Iranian film director Asghar Farhadi, who has said he is staying away from February 26 ceremony following President Trump’s attempt to ban travel from Iran and six other mainly Muslim countries.

Also on February 24, all the nominees for best foreign language film – including Asghar Farhadi – issued a joint statement denouncing the current “climate of fanaticism and nationalism”.

How Does Your Car Affect Your Health?

0

Just because you spend so much time in your car, doesn’t necessarily mean you think about it having a relationship with your health. Unless you’re some sort of crazy enthusiast, driving probably just blends into the background as the thing that takes you to work every day. But a car can need AZ emissions testing – what you need to know and also end up having more impact on your health than you think. While your Honda may not sneak into your bedroom window to smother you with a pillow, it may be more serious that you think.

Road Rage and Your Heart

Getting angry means that your heart rate increases, and when your heart rate increases from stress, it’s not the same as if you ran several miles. Your ticker is important when it comes to keeping you alive, and putting it under that kind of duress won’t help. Whether you must do breathing techniques, stay off the road during certain times of day or just simply close your eyes (oops, never mind, don’t close your eyes), you’re going to have to find a way to calm your blood pressure down some.

driver

Sitting and Your Body

Driving is inherently sedentary, and that’s not helping your body with everything it needs to do. Your body needs to move to get the circulation going, and long car trips don’t help. But we already know the excuses. You’re not going to carry back 15 pounds of groceries back from the store, you’re not going to go for a walk when it’s pitch black and there might be puppy kickers waiting for you, you’re not going to go out after you just spend an hour in the car. We get it. We know why you’re sitting and not exercising. That doesn’t mean it’s ok though.

Leather and Your Skin

How old is your car? How old is that leather? How well was it made when it was brand new? If your skin has been itchy where it makes contact with the seat, you may be having some type of adverse reaction to your car. Also, if you haven’t cleaned it for a while, there could be a variety of dust mites or dirt in the fibers that aren’t helping you have that natural glow. Even if there’s no visible rash, you may want to consider what you’re exposing your body to every time you get in the car. Reupholstering your car or even cleaning it may help tremendously.

Fumes and Your Lungs

Carbon monoxide isn’t great for you, and while car manufacturers know this, it’s worth avoiding it as much as possible. Carbon tends to stay in your lungs, so the less of it you have, the better off you are. Air pollution is a major concern for our health, and the reason why you don’t hear about it as often as you should, is that there really isn’t much we can do about it right now. Driving is a necessity in our world today, so the best we can do is reduce our amount of time on the road for the benefit of better breathing.

Look, no one’s saying that your car is killing you. Plenty of people drive for decades and die in their sleep at the age of 100. But it is something to be aware of when you’re in your car and on the road. The more you pay attention to rules and tips from traffic school, your body is doing as you spend more time in the car, the more likely it is you’ll make better choices about what you do and how often you drive.

Border Wall Funding: Mexico to Respond with Retaliatory Tariffs

Mexico has warned the United States against imposing a unilateral tax on Mexican imports to finance the border wall, saying it could respond in kind.

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said the government could place tariffs on selected goods from United States reliant on exports to Mexico.

Earlier, President Donald Trump vowed to start building the wall “soon, way ahead of schedule”.

The US government says it will start accepting design proposals next month.

The US Customs and Border Protection Agency has informed that it will ask companies to submit proposals “for the design and build of several prototype wall structures” on or around March 6.

A shortlist of the best designs will be drawn up by March 20, after which bidders will be asked to cost their ideas.

Contracts are expected to be awarded by mid-April.

Addressing the CPAC in Maryland on February 24, President Donald Trump vowed to always put American citizens first and build a “great, great border wall”.

Donald Trump has pledged that Mexico will pay for the wall, which could cost up to $21.5 billion, according to Reuters, which cited a Department of Homeland Security internal report.

The figure is much higher than Donald Trump’s estimated price tag of $12 billion.

President Trump has proposed to levy a 20% tax on Mexican imports to pay for a border wall.

In a radio interview on February 24, Luis Videgeray said that “Mexico believes in free trade”, but “would have to respond” if the US tried to fund a border wall by imposing a tax on Mexican imports.

“What we cannot do is remain with our arms crossed,” he said.

“Mexico will face this as a reality and not just as a rhetorical threat because we have realized that rhetorical threats come and go.”

According to reports, Luis Videgeray has previously identified states including Iowa, Texas and Wisconsin as possible targets for retaliatory tariffs.

Mexico is by far the top destination for Texan exports, with goods worth $92.4 billion exported there in 2015, according to the US Department of Commerce.

The wall is a sensitive political subject in Mexico. President Enrique Pena Nieto canceled a trip to meet President Trump last month over the dispute and has said Mexico will not fund the wall.

On February 23, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly met their Mexican counterparts in Mexico City.

Neither side made any mention of the wall in the news conference after their closed-door meetings.

President Donald Trump needs Congressional approval for funding before moving forward with construction of the wall.

White House Leaves Out Some of the Media at Gaggle in Sean Spicer Office

The White House has banned several media outlets from attending an informal press briefing.

The CNN, BBC, the New York Times and others were excluded from an audience with Press Secretary Sean Spicer, with no reason given.

It came hours after President Donald Trump delivered another attack on the media in his CPAC speech, saying that “fake news” was the “enemy of the people”.

President Trump has previously singled out CNN and the New York Times for criticism.

Recent reports claiming Donald Trump’s campaign aides had contact with Russian intelligence officials have particularly irked the president.

Shortly after his speech on February 24, a number of selected media organizations were invited into Sean Spicer’s office for an informal briefing, or “gaggle”.

Those allowed into the room included ABC, Breitbart News, Reuters, Fox News and the Washington Times.

When asked why some were excluded, Sean Spicer said it was his decision to “expand the pool” of reporters.

Sean Spicer also warned the White House was going to “aggressively push back” at “false narratives” in the news.

Buzzfeed, the Daily Mail and Politico were also left out, but CNN was the only major TV network to be denied entry.

USA Today, Time magazine and the Associated Press refused to attend as a protest.

New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet said it was the first time such an exclusion had happened in the newspaper’s history.

A White House spokeswoman said they had invited a group which included all journalists in the press pool, which shares information with other reporters

“We decided to add a couple of additional people beyond the pool. Nothing more than that,” Sarah Sanders said.

During the briefing, Sean Spicer addressed reports that White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus had asked the FBI to publicly dispute media stories about contacts between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Sean Spicer said Reince Priebus had little choice but to seek assistance in rejecting what Spicer said were inaccurate reports. The FBI did not issue the statement requested.

Donald Trump has been dogged by claims of alleged links to Moscow since his presidential campaign.

He asked for national security adviser Michael Flynn’s resignation last week after he misled VP Mike Pence about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador during the transition.

The White House Correspondents’ Association says it is “protesting strongly” about how the press briefing was handled by the White House.

Donald Trump Vows to Build Mexican Border Wall Ahead of Schedule

0

Addressing the Conservative Political Action Congress (CPAC), President Donald Trump has promised to start building a wall on the Mexican border “soon, way ahead of schedule”.

President Trump vowed to always put American citizens first and build a “great, great border wall”.

He also promised to focus on “getting bad people out of this country”.

Donald Trump was greeted by chants of “USA, USA, USA!” as the president addressed the annual forum in Maryland.

“We’re building the wall,” he said.

“In fact it’s going to start very soon. Way ahead of schedule. It’s way, way, way ahead of schedule.”

Donald Trump’s comments come a day after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly met their Mexican counterparts in Mexico City.

Neither made any mention of the wall in February 23 news conference after their closed-door meetings.

The wall could cost up to $21.5 billion, according to Reuters, citing a Department of Homeland Security internal report – much higher than Donald Trump’s estimated price tag of $12 billion.

Donald Trump, who has insisted Mexico would later pay for the wall, needs Congressional approval for funding before moving forward with construction.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has said he would not finance Donald Trump’s wall.

On February 24, President Donald Trump also said he was working on a plan to “totally obliterate” ISIS.

“Foreign terrorists will not be able to strike America if they can’t get in to America,” he said.

Donald Trump continued that he “took a lot of heat on Sweden”, referring to his erroneous claim that an attack had recently happened there.

He told the crowd: “I love Sweden… but the people over there understand I’m right.”

President Trump then referred to terrorist attacks in France before telling an anecdote about a friend who used to love travelling to Paris every year, but has stopped because “Paris is no longer Paris”.

One of the loudest rounds of applause came when he emphasized his “America First” outlook.

“Global co-operation, dealing with other countries, getting along with other countries is good,” he said.

“It’s very important.

“But there’s no such thing as a global anthem, a global currency or a global flag.

“This is the United States of America that I’m representing. I’m not representing the globe; I’m representing your country.”

President Trump devoted the first 13 minutes of his speech to criticizing the media and its use of unnamed sources, without saying which stories he was unhappy with.

Relations between the White House and the media hit a new low for his presidency a few hours later.

Reporters from the BBC, The New York Times, CNN and other outlets were excluded from a briefing by the White House press secretary Sean Spicer. No reason was given, but Associated Press and Time magazine boycotted the so-called gaggle in protest.

Donald Trump is the first president to address the group during his first year in office since Ronald Reagan in 1981, according to American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp.

Pancreas Can Be Triggered to Regenerate Itself through Fasting Diet

0

A new study, published in the journal Cell, showed that the pancreas can be triggered to regenerate itself through a type of fasting diet.

Restoring the function of the pancreas – which helps control blood sugar levels – reversed symptoms of diabetes in animal experiments.

According to the American researchers, the diet reboots the body.

Experts said the findings were “potentially very exciting” as they could become a new treatment for the disease.

People are advised not to try this without medical advice.

In the experiments, mice were put on a modified form of the “fasting-mimicking diet”.

It is like the human form of the diet when people spend five days on a low calorie, low protein, low carbohydrate but high unsaturated-fat diet.

It resembles a vegan diet with nuts and soups, but with around 800 to 1,100 calories a day.

Then they have 25 days eating what they want – so overall it mimics periods of feast and famine.

Previous research has suggested it can slow the pace of ageing.

However, animal experiments showed the diet regenerated a special type of cell in the pancreas called a beta cell.

These are the cells that detect sugar in the blood and release the hormone insulin if it gets too high.

Dr. Valter Longo, from the University of Southern California, said: “Our conclusion is that by pushing the mice into an extreme state and then bringing them back – by starving them and then feeding them again – the cells in the pancreas are triggered to use some kind of developmental reprogramming that rebuilds the part of the organ that’s no longer functioning.”

There were benefits in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the mouse experiments.

Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system destroying beta cells and type 2 is largely caused by lifestyle and the body no longer responding to insulin.

Further tests on tissue samples from people with type 1 diabetes produced similar effects.

Dr. Valter Longo said: “Medically, these findings have the potential to be very important because we’ve shown – at least in mouse models – that you can use diet to reverse the symptoms of diabetes.

“Scientifically, the findings are perhaps even more important because we’ve shown that you can use diet to reprogram cells without having to make any genetic alterations.”

Separate trials of the diet in people have been shown to improve blood sugar levels. The latest findings help to explain why.

However, Dr. Valter Longo said people should not rush off and crash diet.

He said people could “get into trouble” with their health if it was done without medical guidance.

What Is VX Nerve Agent that Killed Kim Jong-nam?

It appears Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has been killed in Malaysia by a highly toxic nerve agent called VX.

The VX nerve agent is the most potent of the known chemical warfare agents. It is a clear, amber-colored, oily liquid which is tasteless and odorless.

The agent works by penetrating the skin and disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses – a drop on the skin can kill in minutes. Lower doses can cause eye pain, blurred vision, drowsiness and vomiting.

VX can be disseminated in a spray or vapor when used as a chemical weapon, or used to contaminate water, food, and agricultural products.

It can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, ingestion, skin contact, or eye contact.

Clothing can carry VX for about 30 minutes after contact with the vapor, which can expose other people.

VX was banned by the 1993 UN’s Chemical Weapons Convention.

Kim Jong-nam Killed by VX Nerve Agent, Malaysia Toxicology Reports Reveal

0

Kim Jong-nam was killed by VX nerve agent, Malaysian toxicology reports say.

The half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un died last week after two women accosted him briefly in a check-in hall at a Kuala Lumpur airport.

The toxicology reports indicate Kim Jong-nam was attacked using VX nerve agent, which is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the UN.

Kim Jong-nam is thought to have fallen out of favor with Kim Jong-il in 2001 after he was caught trying to sneak into Japan using a false passport

There is widespread suspicion that North Korea was responsible for the attack, which it fiercely denies.

North Korea responded furiously to Malaysia’s insistence on conducting a post-mortem examination and has accused Malaysia of having “sinister” purposes.

Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on February 24 that the presence of the nerve agent had been detected in swabs taken from Kim Jong-nam’s eyes and face.

One of the women Kim Jong-nam interacted with at the airport on February 13 had also fallen ill with vomiting afterwards, he added.

Khalid Abu Bakar said other exhibits were still under analysis and that police were investigating how the banned substance might have entered Malaysia.

Donald Trump Wants US to Expand Its Nuclear Arsenal

0

President Donald Trump has repeated calls for the US nuclear supremacy, in his first comments on the issue since taking office.

He said it would be “wonderful” if no nation had nuclear arms, but otherwise the US must be “top of the pack”.

President Trump told Reuter that the United States had “fallen behind on nuclear weapon capacity”.

Critics say the US and Russia already have more weapons than necessary to deter a nuclear attack.

According to the US nonpartisan Arms Control Association, the US has 6,800 nuclear weapons and Russia has 7,000.

Speaking to Reuters in a wide-ranging interview, President Trump said: “I am the first one that would like to see everybody – nobody have nukes, but we’re never going to fall behind any country even if it’s a friendly country, we’re never going to fall behind on nuclear power.

“It would be wonderful, a dream would be that no country would have nukes, but if countries are going to have nukes, we’re going to be at the top of the pack.”

Donald Trump’s latest comments on nuclear weapons echo a tweet he sent a few weeks after his election win, in which he pledged to increase the country’s capability.

A new strategic arms limitation treaty between the US and Russia, known as New Start, requires that by February 5, 2018, both countries must limit their arsenals of strategic nuclear weapons to equal levels for 10 years.

The independent Arms Control Association non-profit group criticized Donald Trump’s remarks.

The group said in a statement: “Mr. Trump’s comments suggest, once again, that he is ill-informed about nuclear weapons and has a poor understanding of the unique dangers of nuclear weapons.

“The history of the Cold War shows us that no one comes out on <<top of the pack>> of an arms race and nuclear brinksmanship.”

During Donald Trump’s campaign he referred to nuclear proliferation as the “single biggest problem” facing the world, but also said he could not rule out using nuclear weapons against Europe.

Hillary Clinton repeatedly cast Donald Trump during the campaign as too erratic and lacking in the diplomatic skills required to avoid a nuclear war.

Beyonce Cancels Coachella Festival Performance

Pregnant Beyonce has canceled her appearance at Coachella music festival in April under doctor’s orders.

She was due to top the bill at the annual festival in the California desert on April 15 and 22.

Coachella organizers have said Beyonce will headline the event in 2018 instead.

A statement said: “Following advice of doctors to keep a less rigorous schedule, Beyonce has made the decision to forgo performing at the 2017 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

“However, Goldenvoice and Parkwood are pleased to confirm that she will be a headliner at the 2018 festival. Thank you for your understanding.”

The festival, which is based in Indio, hasn’t revealed who will replace Beyonce.

Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar are still headlining the two-weekend festival.

Earlier this month, Beyonce performed at the Grammys, where she showed off her baby bump and took home two awards.

The 35-year-old singer won best music video for Formation and best urban contemporary album for Lemonade.

Beyonce and her husband Jay Z already have a daughter, five-year-old Blue Ivy.

They haven’t said when their twins are due.

Repurposing: the Secret to Increasing Your ROI

0

Businesses everywhere are focusing on a simple 3-letter abbreviation: ROI, or return on investment. This is essentially calculated with the money you’ve invested into a business and the amount of return you got. For example, if you bought 50 shares in a company at $10 a share, that’s an investment of $500. Let’s say you make back $550, that’s roughly a 10% return on your investment.

To give you a harder example, thinking about spending $50,000 on an employee for a year. Now you have to calculate how much money that employee has made you. If that employee sells products and works independently then you could potentially have an easy calculation on your hands, but unfortunately, an employee usually doesn’t work on their own and is part of a team, contributing ideas, manpower and other things to help your business succeed. In a situation like this, it’s not easy to calculate how much return you get on your investment.

The Secret to Increasing Your ROI

Repurposing is perhaps the best way to improve your ROI. Essentially, it means to continue using your investment past whatever projections you have. For instance, if you invested money into a marketing campaign that cost $10,000 but you have some leftover assets that could be used, such as sample products that weren’t used, logo and website design features that can still be used, then you can continue to utilise those extras and repurpose them.

For instance, your $10,000 could’ve been projected to give you a 50% ROI, meaning you made $15,000 back due to extra sales. However, you still haven’t used up all the sample products you have, meaning you can repurpose them in unique ways. For example, you could offer an affiliate marketing opportunity with bloggers. You send them left over samples, give them a link for their readers to buy from you and further increase your ROI. The blogger gets money, you get to reuse samples and continue making money from your investment, and everyone is happy.

Repurposing Software and Technology

Another great way of increasing your ROI is to repurpose technology and software. For instance, if you have an alert notification software setup for your business and employees, you can convert it to a global messaging service to keep your employees in check and give them notifications about various jobs or tasks that need to be done.

Another method of repurposing software is to just continue using an older version despite there being a newer edition. For example, you could buy an older version of Microsoft Office instead of subscribing to Office 365. You’ll save money in the long run, it probably has all the features you need, and you don’t need to spend extra money on features you won’t use. For hardware, you could probably continue using old computers as word processing machines or handling spreadsheets. You don’t need a powerful computer to run simple office tasks, so why upgrade and waste money? That $500 computer you bought for your office could probably last you an entire decade and still be powerful enough to repurpose as an office computer should you upgrade in the future.

Repurposing Employees

Hiring an employee is expensive. You have to consider the costs of interviewing the employee, equipping them with a new computer and other tools, and also consider benefits they receive. It’s not cheap hiring an employee, but you can get more value out of your staff if you know how to. You might be thinking about forcing them to do overtime or making them do multiple tasks that they weren’t initially hired for, but that would be a brutish way to go about maximising the efficiency of your staff.

A long-term solution for improving the investment you made in your employees is to give them a career and not just a job. If you want the most out of each member of staff, then it would be wise to give them a clear path to progress further in your business. Perhaps they can start as interns and slowly work their way up to become more important members of staff. Eventually they could become more specialised team members, or perhaps they take on a general role and help with other departments whenever the time is right. Having employees that grow and fill a variety of different roles is critical when you are growing your business, and it’s one of the best ways to improve your ROI on each individual employee you hire.

Mosul Airport Recaptured from ISIS

Mosul airport has been recaptured by Iraqi elite forces from ISIS.

The operation took four hours. ISIS continued to fire mortars at the airport from further inside the city after losing the ground to the army.

The jihadists have also entered a nearby military base amid further clashes, a military spokesman said.

Eastern Mosul was retaken last month.

Today’s advance brings the army within less than a mile of western Mosul, where the militants are expected to launch attacks from densely populated neighborhoods.

The assault began with air strikes by the US-led coalition before armored columns advanced to the airport’s perimeter.

Iraqi forces also came under fire from ISIS militants holed up inside airport buildings, reports said.

Foreign troops from the US-led coalition were with the attacking troops, officials told the Associated Press, without specifying their nationality.

According to reports, the airport’s runway has been destroyed by ISIS.

The airport and the al-Ghazlani base are on Mosul’s southern outskirts on the western side of the Tigris River.

Thousands of Iraqi troops, backed by artillery and air power, are involved in the assault to retake Mosul.

Leaflets warning residents of an imminent offensive were earlier dropped over western Mosul, where military officials say narrow winding streets could make retaking the area particularly difficult.

Although slightly smaller than the east, western Mosul is more densely populated and includes districts seen as pro-ISIS.

The UN has voiced concern about the welfare of civilians trapped in the city.

North Korea Accuses China of Giving In to US Demands

0

North Korea has accused China, its only international ally, of giving in to American demands.

Last week, China announced a ban on coal imports during 2017, in response to North Korea’s continuing ballistic missile tests.

The Pyongyang statement did not name China, but referred to a “neighboring country” which “often claims” to be friendly.

“This country, styling itself a big power, is dancing to the tune of the US,” the state-run KCNA news agency said.

In a direct reference to the ban on imports, the Pyongyang statement said China had “taken inhumane steps such as totally blocking foreign trade”, which would help its enemies “to bring down the social system” in North Korea.

North Korea relies on the coal trade with China for cash income.

Although China backs North Korea, alone among the international community, it has been a critic of its nuclear program, and has backed UN sanctions against it.

China’s ban on coal imports came a week after North Korea tested an intermediate-range ballistic missile, in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.

The following day, Chinese media reported that a coal shipment from North Korea worth $1 million had been stopped at Wenzhou port, on China’s eastern coast, before the ban was officially announced a few days later.

North Korea claims to have advanced nuclear capabilities that have never been verified. The country said it created a nuclear weapon in just a few years without any external aid.

If North Korea successfully created a fully functional inter-continental ballistic missile, it could conceivably threaten the US – about 5,500 miles away – as well as closer neighbors.

Howver, the government remains defiant in the face of international pressure.

“It is utterly childish to think that [North Korea] would not manufacture nuclear weapons and inter-continental ballistic rockets if a few [pennies] of money is cut off,” it said in its statement.

The words “dancing to the tune of the US” may refer to President Donald Trump’s remarks, before taking office, that China should bring North Korea “under control”.

Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox and Friends on January 4: “China has… total control over North Korea.

“And China should solve that problem. And if they don’t solve the problem, we should make trade very difficult for China.”

The rebuke of its only ally is the second verbal attack on another nation by North Korea on the same day.

Earlier, the secretive country appeared to blame Malaysia for the death of Kim Jong-un’s half-brother, Kim Jong-nam, and said the country was attempting to politicize the return of his body.

Kim Jong-nam died after being poisoned at Kuala Lumpur airport in an apparent planned attack.

Kim Jong-nam Assassination: North Korea Reacts for the First Time by Condemning Malaysia

0

North Korea has reacted for the first time to Kim Jong-nam’s assassination saying that Malaysia is responsible for the death of one of its citizens and is attempting to politicize the return of his body.

It does not name Kim Jong-nam, but the KCNA report appears to be state media’s first reference to the death of Kim Jong-un’s half-brother.

Kim Jong-un died after being poisoned at Kuala Lumpur airport and his body remains in a hospital mortuary.

Several North Koreans are wanted in connection with his death.

They include a senior official at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur as well as an employee of the state airline, Air Koryo.

Four other North Koreans named earlier in the case are thought to have left Malaysia already, while another North Korean is in detention.

Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on February 23 that he had asked international police agency Interpol to issue an alert for the four.

On February 22, Malaysian police confirmed that Kim Jong-nam died after two women – also in detention – wiped a toxin on his face while he was waiting for a flight to Macau.

It said the attack was “planned” and that the women had been well trained. They have not directly blamed the North Korean state, but said North Koreans were clearly behind it.

Kim Jong-nam was once seen as a possible successor to his father, Kim Jong-il, but was bypassed in favor of his younger half brother, Kim Jong-un, and spent many years living abroad.

He had been travelling on a passport under the name Kim Chol.

Malaysia says it believes the man was indeed Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-un, though it is seeking family DNA samples for official confirmation, a request North Korea called “absurd”.

KCNA said only that “a citizen of the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea]” who was traveling on a diplomatic passport had died due to “a heart stroke”.

It said reports of a poisoning were false and Malaysia was part of an “anti-DPRK conspiratorial racket launched by the South Korean authorities”.

Conducting a post-mortem on the holder of a diplomatic passport without state permission was “a wanton human rights abuse and an act contrary to human ethics and morality”, it said.

“The biggest responsibility for his death rests with the government of Malaysia,” said the KCNA report, and the refusal to hand the body back to North Korean officials “proves that the Malaysian side is going to politicize the transfer of the body in utter disregard of international law and morality and thus attain a sinister purpose”.

Trappist-1: Seven Earth-Sized Exoplanets Orbiting A Single Star Detected

A record seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a single star have been detected.

The astronomers say that all seven exoplanets could potentially support liquid water on the surface, depending on the other properties of those planets.

However, only three are within the conventional “habitable” zone where life is considered a possibility.

The compact system of exoplanets orbits Trappist-1, a low-mass, cool star located 40 light-years away from Earth.

The planets, detected using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and several ground-based observatories, are described in the journal Nature.

Lead author Michaël Gillon, from Belgium’s University of Liège, said: “The planets are all close to each other and very close to the star, which is very reminiscent of the moons around Jupiter.

“Still, the star is so small and cold that the seven planets are temperate, which means that they could have some liquid water – and maybe life, by extension – on the surface.”

Co-author Amaury Triaud, from the University of Cambridge, UK, said the team had introduced the “temperate” definition to broaden perceptions about habitability.

Three of the Trappist-1 planets fall within the traditional habitable zone definition, where surface temperatures could support the presence of liquid water – given sufficient atmospheric pressure.

However, Dr. Amaury Triaud said that if the planet furthest from the parent star, Trappist-1h, had an atmosphere that efficiently trapped heat – a bit more like Venus’s atmosphere than Earth’s – it might be habitable.

The six inner planets have orbital periods that are organized in a “near-resonant chain”. This means that in the time that it takes for the innermost planet to make eight orbits, the second, third and fourth planets revolve five, three and two times around the star, respectively.

This appears to be an outcome of interactions early in the evolution of the planetary system.

The astronomers say it should be possible to study the planets’ atmospheric properties with telescopes.

However, the astrophysicist also warns that we must remain extremely careful about inferring biological activity from afar.

Some of the properties of cool, low mass stars could make life a more challenging prospect. For example, some are known to emit large amounts of radiation in the form of flares, which has the potential to sterilize the surfaces of nearby planets.

In addition, the habitable zone is located closer to the star so that planets receive the heating necessary for liquid water to persist. But this causes a phenomenon called tidal locking, so that planets always show the same face to their star.

This might have the effect of making one side of the planet hot, and the other cold.

Dr. Amaury Triaud said UV light might be vital for producing the chemical compounds that can later be assembled into biological systems. Similarly, if life emerges on the permanent night side of a tidally locked planet, it might be sheltered from any flares.

However, he said the Trappist-1 star was not particularly active, something it has in common with other “ultra cool dwarfs” the team has surveyed.

“It is fair to say there is much we don’t know. Where I am hopeful is that we will know if flares are important, we will know if tidal locking is relevant to habitability and maybe to the emergence of biology,” he explained.

“Many of the arguments in favor or disfavor of habitability can be flipped in that way. First and foremost we need observations.”

In addition to the Spitzer observations, astronomers gathered data using Very Large Telescope in Chile, the Liverpool Telescope in La Palma, Spain, and others.

Will Flying Private Be the Next Travel Trend?

0

Private air travel has long been the preferred mode of transport for celebrities, footballers and wealthy businessmen – a lifestyle that the normal flyer in standard class can only dream of. Hiring a private plane is extravagant and luxurious, but could it actually be the next big trend for travellers?

Let’s have a look at some of the reasons why you could be flying privately in the near future.

  • Social Status

With everything shared on social media in our digital age, people are increasingly chasing “likes” or social gratification. Even the news reports how social media channels like Instagram are changing the world. Its influence means that posts are becoming more extreme, taken in far-flung destinations, attempting to project an opulent lifestyle on their social media.

In essence, it’s a constructed reality and people may be willing to fork out the money to project an extravagant lifestyle to their followers. However, this is not an impossible prospect as flying privately may not be as costly as we may think.

  • Lower Costs

Although the price of hiring a private jet may still be higher than a first-class ticket, the difference between the prices isn’t so extortionate. If you fill all the seats in light seven-person jet, then the cost is split between your entire party rather than each of you paying separately for a seat on a commercial airline.

There are also websites that offer cheap deals and private jet owners occasionally post specials for the next day on their Facebook pages, which means that a round trip in a private jet may not be exclusive to only the rich and famous. You can use a private jet charter membership program and fly with as little as three hours’ notice also.

  • Convenience

The entire process involved in flying is much easier when you fly privately. Forget about flight schedules, you can enjoy flying at times that suit your own schedule. Never again will you have to wake up at 4am to check in for an early flight at a busy airport – flying privately means that if you’re running late, then the plane waits. You can also skip the long queues for baggage check-ins and the lines for security, saving you valuable time.

Private planes are able to land at many more airports than a commercial aircraft, so if there’s any delays predicted, then they can easily change their plans with little notice and choose to land at an alternative airport nearby. It’s the epitome of flexible travel.

With an 137% increase in private flights recorded last year, travellers seem to be moving away from the traditional commercial air travel for a more flexible and convenient way. If the gap between the cost of commercial and private flying continues to close, more people will be tempted to use these services and you too might be enjoying the luxury of private air travel in the near future.

Three Fantastic Reasons to Use an Online Estate Agent to Sell Your Property

Selling your home can be a drawn out, expensive, and stressful affair, so you want to go about it the best way you can. Your estate agent will play a big part in this, and should be chosen to save you as much time, money, and hassle as possible.

That’s why we recommend using an online estate agent rather than traditional high street names. Likely to cost less, have a larger audience of potential purchasers, and make the whole process go more quickly, they can be a great alternative to doing things the old-fashioned way.

Here are just three of the reasons that we recommend enlisting one to sell your property…

#1: Online Estate Agents Usually Cost Less

If you take the time to consider any modern industry, you’ll soon come to the conclusion that online enterprises usually have lower overheads, and are happy to pass these savings on to their customers to increase their competitiveness. This applies to estate agents as much as any other professionals, and most internet ventures will charge significantly less than their high street counterparts, which means that if you would like an easy way to cut back on your costs, a company like Hatched could be the answer.

#2: Online Estate Agents Usually Have a Larger Audience of Potential Purchasers

When it comes to buying, whether it’s a home, a new mobile phone, or a holiday, most people now start their search online. According to the latest statistics, 80 per cent of all property purchasers do their shopping through the World Wide Web, and technologically savvy Generation Y account for 68 per cent of all first-time home buyers. This gives online estate agents a huge audience to mine, and means that for as long as your property is being advertised on the internet, it is being seen by a vast number of would-be purchasers.

#3: You’ll Have Greater Control Over the Sales Process

When you sell online, you have the additional boon of being able to control the process to a greater degree. Most agencies will allow you to manage fundamental aspects of the sale, from arranging viewings to talking with prospective buyers. This means that you can conduct these yourself, showing interested parties around and developing a direct relationship with them from day one. This gives you the chance to be involved in key phases, whilst still being able to leave the tricky bits to the professionals.

If you’re looking for a superior alternative to your local estate agent, could an online enterprise be the best option for you?

The Classic Cars of Tomorrow Predicted

We all know a classic car when we see one, but we might be more hard-pressed to explain exactly what one is if asked. A recent article from AA Cars defines them as rare exceptions to the rule of depreciation—most cars see a dramatic drop in value the moment they are driven away from the dealership and the difference in price after just a few years can be staggering, but collector’s items naturally only go up in price as time goes on.

The article goes on to name a few likely candidates, like the Audi TT, the Mazda MX-5, and the Subaru Impreza. But how can you spot the classic cars of tomorrow? What might they look like? And how can you make the best decisions for classic car investments? Here are some key elements:

Design

Simply being average is no way to be remembered, and many of the classic cars of the 60s and 70s are far from being the standard vehicles of choice for John Q. Public and Joe Everyman.

Real classics tend to be distinct and distinguished even when they are new, which is why the Audi TT and other cars with a sleek and idiosyncratic look make for such a promising investment.

Prestige Makes

To be blunt, family run-arounds and low cost compact cars aren’t the kind of thing we typically expect to see become classics. For a car to hold onto—or regain—its value there needs to be an expectation of quality manufacture, so likely candidates will all belong to prestige brands like Subaru, BMW, and Audi, or at least a manufacturer people can see putting out the occasional masterpiece among more standard offerings.

In short, classic cars tend to begin life as luxury cars, so that’s the sector to search if you’re looking for potential candidates. If you’re a risk taker, the newly launched DS line is aiming for that market in a big way, though it remains to be seen whether it can build the reputation for excellence of design that makes its competitors such good candidates for the classic market.

One Other Thing

One factor to bear in mind isn’t one that makes a car more likely to turn into a classic, but one you shouldn’t pay too much mind. Classic cars don’t instantly start appreciating in value as soon as they’re released—no one would try to make these kinds of predictions if they did—so don’t let a car’s low current price put you off an investment. Classic cars will drop in price before they start to rise, and the best time to buy is when they’re at their lowest.

President Donald Trump to Revoke Gender Neutral Bathroom Rules

President Donald Trump will rescind guidance enacted by President Barack Obama in favor of transgender students, the White House has announced.

The Obama-era rule directed public schools to allow transgender pupils to use toilets of their gender identity.

However, critics said that guidance was government overreach which threatened other students’ privacy and safety.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said President Trump firmly believes “this is a states’ rights issue”.

Sean Spicer told a news conference: “I would expect further guidance to come out on that today.”

Though the Obama-era order will be rescinded, anti-bullying safeguards are expected to remain in place, the AP reported, citing a government official.

In May 2016, President Obama’s justice and education departments instructed public schools to allow transgender students to use whichever bathroom corresponded to their gender identity.

Though not legally binding, President Obama’s order warned schools they could lose funding if they did not follow the new guidance.

The directive sparked a backlash across the country, prompting legal challenges from 13 states and a Texas federal judge’s preliminary injunction blocking the department’s position in August.

The Obama administration’s guidance was based on its interpretation of Title IX, the federal law that prohibits discrimination in education.

Barack Obama argued that protection extended to gender identity.

However, Sean Spicer said the previous administration’s guidelines were confusing and too difficult to implement.

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump said transgender students should be allowed to use whichever bathroom “they feel is appropriate”.

However, he reversed his stance after facing Republican criticism.

Conservative activists praised Donald Trump’s impending order, saying it protected student rights to privacy.

“Our daughters should never be forced to share private, intimate spaces with male classmates, even if those young men are struggling with these issues,” said Vicki Wilson, a member of Students and Parents for Privacy.

“It violates their right to privacy and harms their dignity.”

Meanwhile, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten called the move a major setback for trans rights.

Turkey Removes Military Headscarf Ban

0

The Turkish government has lifted a ban on female army officers wearing the Muslim headscarf.

The army is the last Turkish institution to see the ban removed. It has long been seen as the guardian of Turkey’s secular constitution.

Wearing headscarves in public institutions was banned in the 1980s.

Last month, Turkey lifted the headscarf ban in a number of state institutions

However, Islamist-leaning President Recep Tayyip Erdogan argues that the ban is an illiberal vestige of the past.

The issue has been controversial in Turkey for many years.

Secularists regard the headscarf as a symbol of religious conservatism and have accused President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of pushing an Islamist agenda, converting many public schools into religious ones as part of his pledge to raise “a pious generation”.

Over the past decade the Muslim headscarf ban has been removed for schools, universities, the civil service and in August for the police.
