Adam Smith dead: George Goodman dies from myelofibrosis at 83

Author and economics broadcast commentator George Goodman, best known by his pseudonym Adam Smith, has died at the age of 83.

His son, Mark Goodman, says that he died Friday at his home in Miami after a long battle with the bone marrow disorder myelofibrosis.

For years, George Goodman was known to PBS viewers as the personable host of Adam Smith’s Money World, a multiple Emmy winner.

George Goodman’s books included the best-selling The Money Game, a children’s story and a novel, The Wheeler Dealers, later adapted into a movie of the same name starring James Garner and Lee Remick.

New York Magazine editor Clay Felker convinced George Goodman to call himself Adam Smith, after the 18th century economist.
