Emma Watson, 22, has already had an image change for upcoming movie The Bling Ring.
The young actress told GQ that she relished the opportunity to play an “amoral” character such as Nikki.
Emma Watson said: “When I read the script and I realized that essentially it was a meditation on fame and what it’s become to our society, I had to do it.
“The character is everything that I felt strongly against – she’s superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral. She’s all of these things and I realized that I hated her. How do you play someone you hate?
“But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job or my role as an actress could be.”
She plays the leading role in the Sofia Coppola-directed movie about the real life Bling Ring or The Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch as they were known, who were arrested in 2009 for a string of break-ins at the homes of stars including Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.
Emma Watson also told GQ that she is doing her best to vary the roles she signs up for in a bid to avoid being pigeonholed.
“I was open-minded about doing anything but the one thing I didn’t want to do was get myself into a corset because I was worried I would never get out again.
“This has been a really big departure for me. It’s a really big character. That’s so exciting for me because it meant I was really acting,” she said.
The complete interview with Emma Watson will appear in the May issue of GQ magazine, out on Thursday, April 4.
