Rogue One: A Star Wars Story soared to top of box office with $290.5 million globally on its opening weekend.
It is the second-biggest weekend December debut in history.
The US accounted for about half of the first Star Wars spinoff’s total, making $155 million, according to box office analyst Exhibitor Relations.
However, the tally is less than the record $248 million taken in 2015 by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Rogue One is yet to open in China and South Korea.
The biggest movie of all time title is still held by Avatar, which made almost $2.8 billion in 2009, followed by Titanic on close to $2.2 billion in 1997. The Force Awakens has made about $2.07 billion.
Produced by Lucasfilm and directed by Briton Gareth Edwards, Rogue One stars Felicity Jones and Riz Ahmed, alongside Forest Whitaker and Diego Luna.
The first standalone chapter in Rogue One is set shortly before the events of the original 1977 movie and tells the story of Rebel Alliance fighters trying to steal plans for the Empire’s feared Death Star.
The next movie in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, known as Episode VIII, is scheduled to be released in December 2017.
Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac has read a letter by Alec Guinness letter at a performance in London.
In the letter, Alec Guinness branded co-star Harrison Ford a “languid young man”.
Writing during filming of the 1977 movie Star Wars: A New Hope, actor Alec Guinness, who played Obi Wan Kenobi, said: “Can’t say I’m enjoying the film.”
The letter from the late actor talks about the movie’s “rubbish dialogue”.
Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was at Letters Live at Freemasons’ Hall in London.
Alec Guinness wrote to his friend Anne Kauffman: “New rubbish dialogue reaches me every other day on wadges of pink paper, and none of it makes my character clear or even bearable.”
The actor said he was working with “Mark Hamill and Tennyson (that can’t be right) Ford. Ellison? No! Well a rangy, languid man who is probably intelligent and amusing”.
Letters Live sees actors and performers reading out literary correspondence to a live audience.
Actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Louise Brearley also took part, along with theater and opera director Sophie Hunter.
Benedict Cumberbatch read out a letter by American author Mark Twain to the American poet Walt Whitman, which paid tribute to all the changes he had witnessed in the world over the course of his lifetime.
Louise Brearley and Benedict Cumberbatch then performed letters between Bessie Moore and Chris Barker, two sweethearts separated by World War Two.
Sophie Hunter read out a letter from deaf and blind woman Helen Keller to the New York Symphony Orchestra, thanking them for the music which she had experienced through the radio by feeling the vibrations.
Avatar 2’s release date is being delayed and it could be because of Star Wars.
The follow-up to the 2009 blockbuster was supposed to be ready by Christmas 2017.
However, according to several reports, Avatar 2 filming hasn’t even started.
This comes just after Disney announced the sequel to The Force Awakens was being delayed and would be coming out at the same time as Avatar 2 was due for release.
Avatar and Star Wars already have a good rivalry going.
Earlier this month, Star Wars overtook Avatar as the biggest ever movie in America.
However, Avatar remains the highest-grossing movie around the world, for now at least.
Avatar introduced the world to 3D as a realistic cinema experience.
Last month, director James Cameron said work on the follow-up trilogy was nearly complete.
James Cameron told Entertainment Weekly: “We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much done.”
The idea is to film them all at once.
So far, Twentieth Century Fox hasn’t explained what’s happened.
It’s likely Disney must have known about the delay – otherwise it probably wouldn’t have shifted the Star Wars release date back.
The release of Star Wars: Episode VIII has been delayed until the end of 2017, Disney has announced.
The next installment of Star Wars saga was due to go on global release in May 2017 but instead will not be aired until the following December.
The new movie will follow The Force Awakens, which is still showing and has become the biggest-grossing movie in US history.
In the five weeks since its release, The Force Awakens has earned $861 million in the US and $1.88 billion globally.
Disney did not say why Star Wars: Episode VIII had been delayed but there had been speculation that the script was being rewritten.
Production is set to begin next month at Pinewood Studios, west of London.
The new release date means Episode VIII could come up against another long-awaited blockbuster, Avatar 2, which is set for Christmas 2017 but could be further delayed.
Despite the bad news concerning the postponement, Star Wars fans have the consolation of the spin-off Rogue One, which is due out in December 2016.
Actor Jason Wingreen, who provided the voice of Star Wars character Boba Fett, has died at the age of 95.
Jason Wingreen’s son Ned told the Hollywood Reporter he died at his home in Los Angeles on Christmas Day.
The actor also played Harry the barkeeper in the sitcoms All in the Family and Archie Bunker’s Place between 1976 and 1983.

The actor only had four lines of dialogue but the character has become a favorite with his own fan club.
In 2004, when director George Lucas re-released the original trilogy, Jason Wingreen’s voice was replaced by Temuera Morrison, who played Boba Fett’s father, Jango Fett, in the prequel movies.
The role of Boba Fett was physically played by Jeremy Bulloch.
Jason Wingreen also appeared in many TV series. He was a regular on The Untouchables and appeared in the original Twilight Zone and Star Trek series.
George Lucas has donated $10 million to the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, the same place he graduated from nearly 50 years ago.
The gift – the largest single donation for student support in the school’s history – will establish The George Lucas Foundation Endowed Student Support Fund for Diversity which will provide financial support for African American and Hispanic students enrolled at the School.
The Star Wars creator said Hispanic and African-American storytellers were underrepresented in the entertainment industry.

Student support will be split equally between male and female students, who will be known as George Lucas Scholars or Mellody Hobson Scholars. The first recipients will be awarded for the fall of 2016.
In addition to the Lucas Family Foundation’s fund, the School of Cinematic Arts has recently received a number of endowment gifts specifically earmarked for student support including: the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Fund for Student Support, the Shriram Family Graduate Student Support Fund, and the Kelly & Ron Meyer Family Fund for Student Support.
George Lucas previously donated around $175 million in 2006, some of which was used to rebuild the film school.
The director is awaiting a vote by Chicago’s City Council on his plans to build a 300,000 square foot Museum of Narrative Art beside Lake Michigan.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens final trailer has debuted online and has been met with considerable acclaim.
The seventh Star Wars movie reunites original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. They are joined by newcomers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.
The new trailer gives little away to the plot of the movie but the central character appears to be Rey – played by Daisy Ridley who, it’s been speculated, is the daughter of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher – both seen in character as Han Solo and Princess Leia.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens picks up three decades after the events of Return of the Jedi, released in 1983.
The new villain of the movie, Kylo Ren – played by Adam Driver – also features in the trailer as he appears to address the misshapen mask of the trilogy’s original antagonist Darth Vader.
Former child star Jake Lloyd has been arrested after a high-speed chase in South Carolina.
Jake Lloyd, 26, starred in 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, paying a young Anakin Skywalker.
He faces charges after failing to stop for police in South Carolina.
A former talent agent confirmed to Colleton County Sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Kyle Strickland that the man was Jake Lloyd.
The man gave his name as Jake Broadbent, a resident of Colorado.
He was charged with failing to stop for officers and reckless driving after hitting speeds of more than 100mph.
Deputies in coastal Charleston County initially tried to stop the car early on Wednesday afternoon, but stopped chasing after the man drove into neighboring Colleton County.
The chase lasted for more than 25 miles before Jake Lloyd drove off a highway, ploughed through a fence and continued speeding along another local road.
That road ended at a dead end but the car kept going into a wooded area before it hit several small trees and stopped.
The man hadn’t posted bail and remained in jail on Sunday evening, June 21, said Sgt. Kyle Strickland.
Jake Lloyd said in a 2012 interview that the role he performed when he was 10 years old made his youth hellish because he was bullied by other children.
His last acting credit was in Madison, which was filmed in 2000 but released in 2005.
Before his appearance in Star Wars, Jake Lloyd appeared in several episodes of ER.
Actor Kan Bonfils, who appeared in James Bond films and as a Jedi master in the Star Wars franchise, has collapsed and died during a theater rehearsal.
Kan Bonfils, 42, was rehearsing for Dante’s Inferno, which was due to open at The Rag Factory in London this week.
Members of the production’s Craft Theatre company and paramedics were unable to resuscitate Kan Bonfils.
The cause of death is not known.
Dante’s Inferno is expected to continue with another actor from the theater company replacing Kan Bonfils.
Kan Bonfils played a “henchman” in 2012’s Skyfall with Daniel Craig and Isagura in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies with Pierce Brosnan. He also appeared as Jedi master Saesee Tiin in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), opposite Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor.
George Lucas has selected Chicago as the future site of a museum of his movie memorabilia and prized art collection.
Chicago had been battling for the site against San Francisco.
The selection of Chicago was a surprise given George Lucas’ close ties with the state of California.
George Lucas has selected Chicago as the future site of a museum of his movie memorabilia and prized art collection
Star Wars creator’s home and visual effects company LucasFilm are based in California. The museum is currently scheduled to open in 2018.
The news was confirmed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office on Tuesday, though no further details were offered.
George Lucas has referred to Chicago as his “second home” in the past. His wife, Mellody Hobson, is from Chicago and they celebrated their wedding there.
Chicago has reportedly offered a patch of real estate along Lake Michigan near other popular attractions including the Field Museum of Natural History and the Shedd Aquarium.
San Francisco is said to have rejected George Lucas’ first choice of sites near the Golden Gate Bridge.
A vote by the museum’s board to accept the decision is expected on Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The board is also expected to change the museum’s name from the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Among the items said to be in the museum’s collection are Norman Rockwell paintings and a scale model of the Millennium Falcon, the spacecraft helmed by Han Solo in Star Wars series.
Iconic Star Wars character R2-D2 is to make an appearance in the next outing, Episode VII, LucasFilm have confirmed.
The squat, squeaking android is being created at Pinewood Studios by two British men who are members of a Star Wars robot-building group.
Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples say they feel “very privileged” to be working on the film.
Star Wars: Episode VII is currently in pre-production and filming is due to begin in the spring.
The new outing is being directed by JJ Abrams and is set for release in December 2015.
The two robot builders have previously employed their skills on Star Wars-themed commercials, but it was a visit of LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy to a convention in Germany that got their work noticed – and landed them jobs on the new film.
R2-D2 is to make an appearance in Star Wars Episode VII
“I mentioned that the R2-D2 Builders in the UK were available if required, as a semi-joke. When I was contacted to work on the film by executive producer Jason McGatlin, it was on her recommendation,” said Oliver Steeples.
“It’s a dream come true,” he added.
“I hope I can live up to the expectations of the thousands of R2-D2 builders around the world, let alone the millions of Star Wars fans.”
The pair, who have been constructing R2-D2 units for some years, will be responsible for maintaining the robots during the making of the film, and will try to improve on its design.
The robot is a mesh of gears, lights and electronics which need to be kept in excellent condition throughout the production of the movie.
British actor Kenny Baker was inside the machine for the first six Star Wars films. It has not been revealed whether he will rejoin the series for Episode VII.
R2-D2, an astromech android, is best known as a companion to the human heroes of the Star Wars franchise, including Luke and Anakin Skywalker, using its resources to rescue them from perilous situations.
He built up an endearing partnership with his fussy fellow android C-3PO, who is able to understand R2-D2’s language and interprets it for humans.
The droid’s name is an abbreviation of “reel 2, dialogue 2” – which Star Wars creator George Lucas overheard in the editing suite for his second film, American Graffiti.
Star Wars Episode VII release date will be December 18, 2015, the Walt Disney Company has announced.
Disney bought Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, from creator George Lucas last year for $4 billion.
It has committed to making at least three new films in the series, one of the most successful franchises ever.
Disney announced the release date as it reported a better-than-expected 12% jump in net profit for the three months to 28 September.
It made a net profit of $1.39 billion during the quarter, up from $1.24 billion during the same period last year.
Star Wars Episode VII release date will be December 18, 2015
The company also reported that its net income for the financial year to September 28 jumped 8% from a year ago to $6.1 billion.
“We’re extremely pleased with our results for Fiscal 2013, delivering record revenue, net income and earnings per share for the third year in a row,” Robert Iger, chief executive of the firm, said in a statement.
Disney’s movie studio business saw a 7% jump in revenues during the fourth quarter.
Revenues rose to $1.5 billion during the period, helped mainly by the strong performance of Monsters University, which Disney said “partially offset” the weak showing of The Lone Ranger.
However, operating income at Disney’s cable network unit, which includes the ESPN sports channel, fell by 7% to $1.3 billion in the last quarter, which the firm said was due to the timing of some ESPN affiliate fee revenues.
The famous Star Wars film set in the Tunisian desert is about to be buried by migrating sand dunes.
The buildings of the fictional city Mos Espa featured in The Phantom Menace, “Episode I” of the Jedi saga.
Sited on the planet Tatooine, this was the home of the young Anakin Skywalker, later to become Darth Vader.
Scientists have used the dwellings as a fixed geographic reference to measure the migration of giant wind-blown crescent-shaped dunes, or barchans.
The famous Star Wars film set in the Tunisian desert is about to be buried by migrating sand dunes
Homes are rarely built in dune fields, and this study illustrates why. It shows dune movements on Earth are 10 times faster than barchans on Mars.
Wind-blown sand can build huge mounds in arid deserts, with sand grains pushed up the shallow rear slope before falling down the steep front slope in the lee of the wind. With steady prevailing winds, the dune shape reflects the wind direction and can develop crescent “wings” pointing downwind.
Individual crescent-shaped barchans are seen on other planets as well as on Earth, and have been imaged on the surface of Mars as well as on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn.
Ralph Lorenz, from Johns Hopkins University, US, together with Jason Barnes, of Brigham Young University, and Nabil Gasmi, of the University of Sousse, Tunisia, visited the Mos Espa site in 2009, and noted that part of a nearby set used in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope had already been overrun.
Using satellite images of the site, they were able to determine the speed of dune movement, which is approaching the buildings once inhabited by such luminaries as Anakin, his slave owner Watto, and rival podracer Sebulba.
Moving at around 15m a year, the front edge of the barchan appears to have made contact with some of the Mos Espa buildings earlier this year, and is encroaching on Qui-Gon’s Alley.
The barchan will likely continue on its journey past the city site, which in due course will re-emerge from the sand, but it is anticipated that it will not remain unscathed.
