Parents of transgender children have posted messages on social media thanking Modern Family for “giving a voice” to their community.

In this week’s episode, same-gender couple Cameron and Mitchell allow their daughter Lily to have her transgender friend Tom over to play.

Tom is played by 8-year-old Jackson Millarker from Atlanta.

Ryan Case introduced Jackson Millarker to her followers on Instagram and Twitter.

One of the show’s stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson also tweeted his joy that Jackson Millarker was a part of the show.

Many people on social media have praised Modern Family for “breaking boundaries”.

Modern Family has won 22 Emmy awards and two of its stars are some of the highest paid actresses on US television.

Sofia Vergara, who plays Gloria, topped Forbes magazine rich list in 2016 after apparently earning $52 million in 12 months.

Her co-star Julie Bowen, who plays Claire, earned $12 million and came 10th.

Transgender actors have appeared in shows like Orange Is The New Black and Nashville, but none of them have been child stars.

A trans teenager called Jazz Jennings has a reality show on TLC, called I Am Jazz.

Modern Family actor Reid Ewing, who plays Dylan in the hit sitcom, has revealed his struggle with body dysmorphia.

In a letter published by Huffington Post, Reid Ewing describes his mental torment, explaining how he felt so ugly and he got surgery after surgery.

Reid Ewing, 27, went under the knife in 2008 when he was 19 years old. He now regrets it.

According to experts, body dysmorphia is an anxiety disorder that causes a person to have a distorted view of how they look and to spend a lot of time worrying about their appearance.

For example, they may be convinced that a barely visible scar is a major flaw that everyone is staring at, or that their nose looks abnormal.

Having body dysmorphia does not mean the person is vain or self-obsessed.

“I genuinely believed if I had one procedure I would suddenly look like Brad Pitt,” Reid Ewing explains.

A doctor then “quickly determined that large cheek implants would address the issues I had with my face, and a few weeks later I was on the operating table.”

Reid Ewing remembers how he woke up screaming from pain, with tears down his face.

He describes his face, after all the swelling went down, as “horrendous”.

Reid Ewing asked for more surgery because he was unhappy with the change but the doctor said he had have to wait for six months.

For the next couple of years Reid Ewing continued to have more cosmetic surgery, including chin implants but they would cause new “problems” he felt needed fixing.

Reid Ewing was filming Modern Family while this was happening.

Sofia Vergara, 40, shared pictures of her fashion mishap on her Twitter page, showing the busted back zip of her Zuhair Murad teal cut-out gown.

The actress later thanked her wardrobe team for helping fix the malfunction before she headed onto the stage to collect the Outstanding Comedy for Modern Family for the third consecutive year.

Sofia Vergara wrote: “20 min Modern Family won!! Dress malfuncion !!! Thank you emergency team!!”

She had earlier looked stunning as she posed on the red carpet in the aquamarine sequinned outfit, which hugged her figure and highlighted her tiny waist.

The stunning actress teamed the outfit, which featured a cut-out back panel, with silver jewellery and left her brown hair loose in waves around her shoulders.

And following Modern Family’s victories at the ceremony – it also took home Outstanding Supporting Comedy Actor for Eric Stonestreet,

Julie Bowen for Supporting Actress in a Comedy and Outstanding Comedy Director award for Steven Levitan – Sofia Vergara marked the show’s success at the FOX Broadcasting Company, Twentieth Century FOX Television and FX 2012 Post Emmy party at Soleto Trattoria in LA.

The actress also ensured she kept her fans updated with her movements at the party, regularly tweeting pictures from inside the event.

Sofia Vergara, who lost out on the Supporting Actress award to co-star Julie Bowen, certainly appeared to be letting her hair down at the event, even indulging in a spot of crowd surfing as the free-flowing alcohol took hold.

She tweeted a picture of herself crowd surfing with the caption: “This is how the Colombians partyyy at the Emmys!!”

Sofia Vergara had earlier written: “I party like a mermaid!” alongside a picture of herself cuddling up to fiancé Nick Loeb.

The actress even invited 19 family members to enjoy the festivities alongside her at the afterparty.

Sofia Vergara told Extra TV: “I brought a lot of people from my family. They wanted to come here with me. There are 19 people, and they love coming here with me, so we have a great time.”

The 63rd edition of Primetime Emmy Awards contained enough surprises to confound oddsmakers as well as skeptics who consider the awards show too predictable.

Modern Family, the ABC production won Best Comedy Series award for the second straight year and another two acting prizes (for Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell, who play a harried married couple) as well.

Mad Men, about the New York ad industry in the 1960s, won its fourth consecutive Emmy as Best Drama, a feat last achieved by NBC’s White House series The West Wing nearly a decade ago.

Jim Parsons of CBS’ nerd sitcom The Big Bang Theory repeated his win from last year, Actor in Comedy Series award and Julianna Margulies, a previous winner for ER, won Actress in Drama Series Award for CBS’ legal drama The Good Wife.

Melissa McCarthy of the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly, Kyle Chandler of the now-canceled small-town soap Friday Night Lights, and Barry Pepper for his role as Robert F. Kennedy in the controversial Reelz miniseries The Kennedys were the other surprises of the Sunday evening ceremony.

At Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony held at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles and hosted by Jane Lynch of Glee and aired live nationwide on Fox, the win for Mad Men was almost unexpected, according to its creator.

“Oh, my goodness,” said Matthew Weiner, as the cast crowded behind him onstage.

“I did not think that was going happen.”

Some of the  observers had speculated that voters at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences might pass the baton instead to either of two acclaimed new HBO dramas, the Prohibition mob story Boardwalk Empire or the fantasy Game of Thrones.

Boardwalk Empire won only one award for Oscar-winning film director Martin Scorsese, who had never previously won an Emmy. PBS’ Downton Abbey drama miniseries was ranked second.

“I must say, this is something I really never dreamed of,” Martin Scorsese told reporters backstage of his win for Boardwalk Empire.

“It’s a different medium in a way, although we approached <<Boardwalk Empire>> as a film — a very long film. It’s just as exciting.”

The British winners of Emmy Awards 2011 were Maggie Smith (for Downton Abbey), Julian Fellowes (who created and wrote much of Downton Abbey) and Kate Winslet, who won the award for the title role in HBO’s miniseries remake of Mildred Pierce.

“Oh, I didn’t think I was going to win anything!” Kate Winslet said onstage.

Kyle Chandler won Actor in Drama Series Award as Eric Taylor, the stoic football coach on Friday Night Lights, which this year wrapped up five critically acclaimed but perilously low-rated seasons, first on NBC and then on DirecTV.

Kyle Chandler’s competition include three multiple Emmy nominees who have never won: Jon Hamm of Mad Men, Hugh Laurie of Fox’s House and Michael C. Hall of Showtime’s Dexter.

“I did not write anything and now I’m starting to worry,” Kyle Chandler said during his speech.

Other first-time winners included supporting actor, drama, Peter Dinklage, for his part as the Imp, a crafty and debauched member of the ruling family in Game of Thrones; and supporting actress, drama, Margo Martindale, for her role as an unlikely crime boss in FX’s Justified.

Peter Dinklage summed up the unpredictable nature of the evening by saluting his rivals for the supporting dramatic actor category, including John Slattery of Mad Men and Alan Cumming of The Good Wife.
