Depending on conditions, the re-entry plan might change. People in Tahitian Village will be allowed back in Wednesday. The Bastrop Convention Center continues to serve as a communications center for evacuees.

Circle D, Pine Valley, KC Estates and Pine Hill Estates opened on Monday and the road blocks were removed on Highway 21. All communities are scheduled to open until Thursday.

Texas Task Force 1 has completed an entire grid search of the burn zone on Monday. Two people are missing, Arlene Page and Steve Ingram. Bastrop County Sheriff Terry Pickering do not think they have perished in the fire. “We don’t know if they’re actual residents. It may just be a summer home or something like that,” he said.

Aqua Water Supply are disinfecting water system on Monday and water should be drinkable without boiling by Tuesday afternoon. Bluebonnet Electric restored power to some homes, but those in the heavily damaged areas may not receive power until September 21.

1,350 firefighters struggles to contain the wildfire, while power and water are cut off to some areas. There are still some hot spots, fallen power lines and trees need to be cleared out while crews are trying to restore power. The fire was more than 70 percent contained, said Texas Forest Service.

Barack Obama signed the federal disaster declaration late Friday night, then federal funds, resources and Federal Emergency Management Agency support for the victims were available for Texas.

On Sunday night the FEMA started a temporary shelter and assistance program and made wildfire victims eligible for money to pay for nights in a hotel. Rick Perry has launched a similar program this weekend. The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering low interest disaster loans both to businesses and individuals affected by fire.

The debris management is very important, fallen trees have to be removed and destroyed properties will require removing large amounts of burned building materials.

On Monday children returned to school in Bastrop Texas. Schools re-opened in the Bastrop and Smithville school districts.

Bastrop Independent School District headquarters received donations of backpacks, pencils, notebooks and binders and distributed to the children.

Buses picked kids up outside their homes or made detours to shelter hotels. The school district provided breakfast and lunch for all students.

Only 6 percent of pupils were absent because were left homeless, moved in with relatives in other communities, or fell ill with smoke inhalation or other fire-related problems.

“Today has really been a smooth day. A lot of smiles from the kids. It looked from afar mostly like a normal day, except for a few more hugs and a little extra loving and attention,” said Martha Werner, principal of Mina Elementary School.

Over 5,000 people were evacuated by the most destructive blaze that has covered drought-stricken Texas since Labor Day weekend. Hundreds of families are homeless and lots of people remained just with little more than the clothes which they were wearing.

Fed by winds whipped up by Tropical Storm Lee, over 190 wildfires statewide have burned thousands homes and killed four people. In Bastrop Texas two small fires has formed a dreadful blaze, Bastrop County Complex fire, that has destroyed more than an estimated 1,554 homes and blackened over 34,000 acres, heavily damaging Lost Pines and Bastrop State Park.

Beatles Memorabilia auction: very rare signed record of Beatles hit on sale.

Madonna: “I absolutely loathe hydrangeas”. Venice Film Festival press conference.

Announced at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Martin Scorsese is directing the documentary “George Harrison: Living In The Material World” about the life of former Beatles member.

Martin Scorsese has been working with Olivia Harrison, George Harrison‘ second wife for the last 2 years on the film, which will look at George Harrison’s entire life.

George Harrison and his wife Olivia

George Harrison and his wife Olivia

The film will feature previously unreleased footage and photos as well as unreleased recordings that the guitarist saved.

Olivia Harrison, one of the film’s producers, has spent years going through her husband’s tapes, notes and photos to deliver essential elements for the film.

“Marty had a connection with George, and they spent some time together. He is as passionate about film and music as George was passionate about music and film,” she said.

It was surely not the intention of the documentary George Harrison: Living In The Material World to depict the Beatle as the prime mover in a sexual free-for-all.

But, driven by a desire to show the so‑called “quiet Beatle” in both “light and shade”, it portrays him as a sensitive, spiritual man with serious weaknesses when it came to women.

The documentary runs for 3 1/2 hours and is in two parts.

The film has just premiered at the Telluride documentary festival in America, and will be shown in its entirety on the BBC on October this year.

Film presented nights of chaos and excess at Friar Park, George Harrison’s immense Victorian Gothic home in Henley, with a haze of dope, cocaine and alcohol.

In a 1973 night, George Harrison’s friend and houseguest Ronnie Wood took him aside and told him that he intended to sleep with the former Beatle’s wife Pattie Boyd that evening.

George Harrison’s response was to point to the room which Ronnie Wood was sharing with his wife Krissie and say: “And I shall be sleeping there.”

There was a moment on the landing when the two men looked at each other, on the threshold of the two bedrooms, and then they both went in.

Ronnie Wood slept with Pattie, and George Harrison slept with the Rolling Stone’s wife – and even took her off to Spain to meet Salvador Dali a few weeks later, which Wood found amusing.

In the same period, George Harrison also slept with Ringo Starr’s wife Maureen, having announced during a dinner party – and in front of Pattie – that he wanted her.

Both Ringo Starr and Pattie Boyd were greatly distressed, and Pattie in particular became annoyed by Maureen’s habit of turning up late at night and spending the evening in meditation with George, or locking herself away in a studio with him.

Pattie Boyd left George Harrison for Eric Clapton

Pattie Boyd left George Harrison for Eric Clapton

In turn, Pattie Boyd slept with Eric Clapton and eventually left George Harrison for Clapton in 1974.

In an interview, given for the upcoming documentary film about George Harrison’s life, his close friend Eric Clapton recalls that Harrison was “very cavalier” about the affair with Pattie, and almost gave him “carte blanche” to have sex with her.

“To be honest, there was a lot of swapping and fooling around,” Clapton said.

But Pattie Boyd recalls: “That whole period was insane. Friar Park was a madhouse. We were all as drunk, stoned and single-minded as each other.”

In the documentary, Olivia Harrison tells of “hiccups” in their marriage when her husband had affairs, even long after those crazy days of the early 1970s with Pattie were over.

Olivia and George Harrison were married in 1978, a month after the birth of their son Dhani, and she was at his bedside when he died of cancer in 2001.

Between those times, Olivia suggests that her husband had several affairs, which she endured, simply waiting for them to pass and forgiving him when they did.

“He liked women and women liked him,” Olivia says.

“If he just said a couple of words to you, it would have a profound effect. It was hard to deal with someone who was so well loved.”

Paul McCartney says: “I don’t want to say much because he was a pal, but he liked the things that men like. He was red-blooded.”

Red-blooded seems an understatement when it comes to George Harrison, who had an abiding fondness for other men’s wives – much like his devotion to marijuana and sitar music.

According to Beatles expert Bill Harry “George had hundreds and hundreds of affairs. John Lennon was probably the most highly-sexed Beatle, but I would put George next after him.”

And in their tell-all book The Love You Make, two Beatles roadies, Peter Brown and Steven Gaines, assert: “He wanted to seduce every woman he laid eyes on.”

George Harrison and Madonna in 1986 during Shanghai Surprise film press conference

George Harrison and Madonna in 1986 during Shanghai Surprise film press conference

Rather extraordinarily, more than one source suspects that George Harrison had a heavy flirtation with Madonna on the set of the 1986 film Shanghai Surprise, despite the presence of her first husband Sean Penn.

Madonna was at the time deeply unhappy with Sean Penn, and said she found George Harrison, who was executive producer of the film, “very understanding and sympathetic”.

George Harrison came to see them filming in Macau, and also met her several times in London before and after the production.

Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone, noted that, although George Harrison felt moved to “read the riot act” to Sean Penn over his hostile and aggressive attitude during filming and gave the actor a stern ticking-off, he treated Madonna with “kid gloves”.

A few weeks after filming finished, he surprised everyone present at a press conference by going on the attack over allegations that Madonna had been impossible to work with, passionately denouncing the assembled journalists as “animals”.

Those who worked with George Harrison at Handmade Films, where he oversaw numerous projects in the 1980s, recall that one close relationship with a young member of the team was very much the talk of the office.

“The story was widely circulated around the film business that he was having an affair with an office junior,” said a source.

It’s all rather extraordinary as, until now, it has always been thought that George Harrison’s love story with Olivia Arias was one of complete spiritual and emotional union.

Olivia, a young woman of Mexican descent, was working as a secretary for the Dark Horse Records label in America when she struck up a telephone friendship with George Harrison, who was recording music for it.

Olivia and George finally encountered each other in person at a party in Los Angeles in 1974. She was a stunning 23-year-old, and he was lonely after the loss of Pattie Boyd a few months previously to Eric Clapton.

Like George Harrison, whose father was a bus driver, Olivia Arias came from a working-class family – her mother was a seamstress, her father, a dry-cleaner.

George Harrison quickly asked Olivia to move into Friar Park with him, so she relocated to England. At first, she found the house lonely, but although Friar Park was so enormous that Pattie Boyd used to complain she could never find her husband, the charismatic George Harrison filled it with friends.

“He was so generous and open, so much more patient with people than me,” Olivia told an interviewer.

“He took everybody along with him, like a driftnet fisherman.

“If we were going on holiday, everybody would come. If we were having dinner, everybody was welcome. He was Pisces, so he swam in a school.”

One of Olivia and George most significant acts was to visit India together in 1976.

That helped George Harrison to continue his spiritual journey which had begun in 1968 with a visit to meditate with the Indian yoga guru Maharishi with the other Beatles.

In 1969, he even gave up all alcohol, drugs and sex for six months, in search of enlightenment.

Unlike his other band members, George Harrison remained committed to the religious sect Hare Krishna, and Olivia shared his commitment.

There was a real sense in which their married life was a retreat. Harrison concentrated on the enormous task of renovating the house and tending the gardens.

George Harrison became passionate about horticulture. To live invisible to the throng behind high walls was a release after the pressure of being a Beatle.

George Harrison first developed cancer in 1997, but the lump in his neck was removed and he underwent radiotherapy.

In 2001, however, it was discovered he had lung cancer, and soon after a brain tumour was also found. Within seven months he had died, with Olivia and his son Dhani by his side.

Olivia tells the documentary that George Harrison had achieved his spiritual goal, which was to take conscious leave of his life and to be ready to go. And, by the end, she says she had forgiven him completely for his affairs.

Jacqueline Kennedy’s interviews. About Martin Luther King, Charles de Gaulle, Indira Ghandi and more.

“Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words” on ABC News tonight.

JFK assassination: mystery unveiled? Jackie Kennedy Onassis secret recordings released this fall.

The former First Lady, Jackie Kennedy talked about her disgust towards Martin Luther King after claimed he tried to arrange a sex party while in Washington for a march.

In the interviews that will be released in series starting with September 13, Jackie Kennedy also talks about how she could barely look at images of the iconic leader after he apparently also made derogatory remarks at JFK’s funeral.

Jacqueline Kennedy’s relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King became strained as a result of wire taps arranged by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.

Those taps allegedly caught Dr. King Jr. trying to arrange a sex party in Washington, although this has been dismissed by some material concocted by Hoover to damage Martin Luther King.

Nonetheless, Jackie Kennedy branded Martin Luther King “tricky” and a “phoney” after hearing of the FBI recordings.

In the first interview that interviews to be broadcast on September 13, the former First Lady said:

“I just can’t see a picture of Martin Luther King without thinking, you know, that man’s terrible.”

Jackie Kennedy said Martin Luther King had mocked her husband’s funeral and Cardinal Richard Cushing, who celebrated Mass at the funeral.

“He made fun of Cardinal Cushing and said that he was drunk at it,” Mrs. Kennedy said.

“And things about they almost dropped the coffin.”

The Jackie Kennedy secret interviews also reveal that JFK saw U.S. participation in Vietnam as “hopeless” and scorned the idea of Lyndon Johnson succeeding him in office.

In the explosive memoirs from the secret tapes, Jackie Kennedy reveals that JFK was highly skeptical about victory in Vietnam.

The secret recordings will be revealed this month on the 50th anniversary of JFK’s first year in office, also describe how former President Kennedy feared what would happen if rival Lyndon Johnson took office.

JFK chose Lyndon Johnson, a Texas senator and former political rival, as his running mate in 1960 but later fretted about a LBJ (Lyndon Baines Johnson) presidency.

Jackie Kennedy’ secret tapes were recorded starting few months after JFk’s assassination in November 1963 by historian and former JFK aide Arthur Schlesinger.

In another interview of Jackie Kennedy with Arthur Schlesinger, she said:

“Jack said it to me sometimes. He said, <<Oh, God, can you ever imagine what would happen to the country if Lyndon were president?>>”

Jacqueline Kennedy also told how JFK and his brother, then-Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy even discussed ways to prevent Johnson from winning the Democratic nomination in a future contest.

“He didn’t like that idea that Lyndon would go on and be president because he was worried for the country,” she said.

“Bobby told me that he’d had some discussions with him.

“I forget exactly how they were planning or who they had in mind. It wasn’t Bobby, but somebody. Do something to name someone else in ’68.”

Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as the 36th U.S. president on Air Force One just two hours after JFK’s assassination.

LBJ was re-elected in his own right in 1964, but declined to run for presidency in 1968.

The “Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy,” book includes a series of revealing interviews with the former first lady.

Jackie Kennedy said JFK was highly about victory in Vietnam, a central battleground of the Cold War and the conflict that brought down Johnson’s presidency.

She also said that President Kennedy, a Democrat, had named Henry Cabot Lodge, a Republican he had defeated for a Massachusetts Senate seat in 1952, as U.S. ambassador to Vietnam because JFK was so doubtful of military success there.

“I think he probably did it… rather thinking it might be such a brilliant thing to do because Vietnam was rather hopeless anyway, and put a Republican there,” Jackie Kennedy said.

Kennedy increased the U.S. presence in Vietnam throughout his brief administration, adding military advisers to help train the South Vietnamese military.

Lyndon Johnson, while was president, escalated the war in Vietnam by later committing ground troops to the conflict despite initial promises not to. Historians still debate whether Kennedy would have done the same.

The interviews where the former first lady speaks candidly about life in the White House have been sealed in a safe until this year.

Over seven sessions with Schlesinger thought to have been recorded just months after Kennedy’s death, she recalled conversations on topics ranging from her husband’s reading habits to the botched Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba.

According to previous reports, the tapes would contain explosive content and include details of JFK’s affair with a White House intern and even theories that LBJ and a cabal of Texas tycoons were involved in JFK’s assassination.

Originally planned for one hour, the interviews will be aired during a two-hour ABC special on September 13, before being released in book form, “Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy” on September 14.

After Jackie Kennedy did the interviews, she steadfastly refused to publicly discuss any details with anyone else about that time in her life.

Jackie Kennedy had ordered that the tapes should not be released until 50 years after her death, with some reports suggesting she feared that her revelations might make her family targets for revenge.

An ABC source said last month that the tapes also revealed that she too had affairs – one with Hollywood star William Holden and another with Fiat founder Gianni Agnelli – as a result of the president’s indiscretions.

Jackie Kennedy died in 1994 from cancer aged 64 and now her daughter, Caroline Kennedy, has agreed to release the recordings early.

9/11 Intercepted: Documentary – Air Traffic Audio Recordings

9/11: Nine little known facts.

9/11 WTC rescuers at higher risk of cancer, The Lancet reveals.

New audio recordings from 9/11 morning that never-before have been heard are shedding new light on the confusion and desperate quest by aviation and military workers for information as the tragic events unfolded.

The recordings were originally organized for 9/11 Commission investigators, but never released to the general public.

With the occasion of 10-year commemoration of the terror atrocity, the audio tapes provides jarring first-hand accounts of airport workers and the moment they phoned the military about scrambling fighter jets to find planes that were not responding and had disappeared from radars.

Newly released audio files detail aviation officials' desperate scramble for information on the morning of 9/11 as United Airlines Flight 175 headed toward the south tower of WTC. (AP photo

Colonel Miles Kara, now retired from U.S. Army and former 9/11 Commission investigator, organized the audio files this year in the National Archives and transcribed them with help from law students and Rutgers Law School Dean John J. Farmer Jr., who served as top counsel to the commission.

The audio files were released by The New York Times this morning.

The recordings begin at 8:13a.m., the moment FAA air traffic controllers in Boston realized American Airlines Flight 11, the jet that crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center, was not responding.

At 8:19, a cabin crew member on the doomed plane, Betty Ong, contacted the airline’s reservations agents in Cary, North Carolina.

“Um, the cockpit’s not answering. Somebody’s stabbed in business class, and we can’t breathe in business and um I think there is Mace that we can’t breathe. I don’t know, I think we’re getting hijacked.”

Immediately after 9:00 a.m. and 16 minutes after Flight 11 crashed into the World Trade Center, an exchange was recorded between a radio caller and a New York air traffic control manager.

“Can you, can you see a guy at about 4,000 feet, about 5 east of the airport right now, looks like he’s-“

“Yeah, I see him,” the traffic control manager said.

“Do you see that guy, look, is he descending into the building also?” the caller asked.

The traffic control manager said:

“He’s descending really quick too, yeah. Forty-five hundred right now, he just dropped 800 feet in like, like one, one sweep.”

“What kind of airplane is that, can you guys tell?”

“I don’t know, I’ll read it out in a minute,” the manager said.

But it was too late, because that plane was United Airlines Flight 175, which crashed into the south tower at 9:03.

“The whole building just came apart,” the manager said.

The audio files also detail how some FAA officials were still in the dark, as aviation officials scrambled to get the U.S. military involved seconds before the south tower was hit.

“Why, what’s going on?” a man at the FAA headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, asked at 9:01 a.m.

[youtube bHyecoBKPiA]

The 9/11 Commission found out on those recordings that military officials were not kept informed of the events, with many not knowing about the last three hijacked flights until after they had crashed.

It was reported that military was not informed that officials had lost contact with American Airlines Flight 77 – which crashed into the Pentagon – until 30 minutes later.

About three minutes before Flight 77’s impact, an FAA official is heard saying:

”They said that it was east of York. And I don’t even know what state that is.”

At 10:32am, the shoot-down order was issued by Vice President Dick Cheney approximately a half hour after United Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

However, two key recordings will remain unreleased.

One is the 30-minute audio clip of the cockpit from United Flight 93.

The other is a classified conference call between high-ranking White House officials like Vice President Dick Cheney and then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

The release of the audio files comes as Reuters reported the vast majority of the 9/11 Commission’s investigative records remain sealed at the National Archives in Washington, even though the commission had directed the archives to make most of the material public in 2009.

The National Archives’ failure to release the material presents a hurdle for historians and others seeking to plumb one of the most dramatic events in modern American history.

The 575 cubic feet of records were in large part the basis for the commission’s public report, issued July 22, 2004.

The 9/11 Commission, formally known as the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, was established by Congress in late 2002 to investigate the events leading up to the 9/11 attacks, the pre-attack effectiveness of intelligence agencies and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the government’s emergency response.

Matt Fulgham, assistant director of the archives’ center for legislative affairs which has oversight of the commission documents, said during an interview this week that more than a third of the material has been reviewed for possible release.

However, many of those documents have been withheld or heavily redacted, and the released material includes documents that already were in the public domain, such as press articles.

9/11 Commission items which are still not public include a 30-page summary of an April 29, 2004 interview by all 10 commissioners with President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, conducted in the White House’s Oval Office.

That moment was the only time the two were formally questioned about the events surrounding the attacks.

Several former 9/11 Commission staff members said that because there is no comprehensive effort to unseal the remaining material, portions of the records the commission had hoped would be available by now to scholars and the public instead will remain sealed indefinitely

9/11: New tapes of aviation industry’s response as WTC fell.

9/11 Intercepted: Documentary – Air Traffic Audio Recordings

9/11 WTC rescuers at higher risk of cancer, The Lancet reveals.

In 2011, US commemorates 10 years since 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked three passenger planes and ploughed them into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. A fourth passenger plane allegedly heading straight for Capitol Hill or the White House crashed in a field in rural Pennsylvania, killing all onboard. 2,993 people were killed and thousands injured in the co-ordinated attacks.

9/11 (September 11, 2001) marked one of the biggest news events in modern history and almost everyone will remember where they were when the story broke.

9/11: 20 people were pulled from the rubble alive

9/11: 20 people were pulled from the rubble alive

According to Yahoo! there are nine surprising things people may not have known about 9/11:

1. 20 people were pulled from the rubble alive

According to 9/11 research on World Trade Center survivors, 20 people were pulled from the rubble alive. Among the survivors were John McLoughlin and William Jimeno, two Port Authority policemen, who were rescued after being buried in debris around a freight elevator for about 13 and 21 hours. They were the subject of the 2006 Oliver Stone film ‘World Trade Center.’

Pasquale Buzzelli, a structural engineer for the Port Authority, and Genelle Guzman, a secretary, were in offices on the 64th floor of the North Tower when the building was hit. Buzzelli was knocked unconscious for three hours, and awoke on a hill of rubble, looking at the sky. Suffering from a broken foot, cuts and a concussion, he was removed by rescue workers and evacuated on a stretcher. Guzman, who was just below the surface, was rescued more than 27 hours after the Tower fell. Her leg was crushed but she fully recovered within four months.

2. Second biggest loss of life – the British nationality people

It wasn’t just Americans who fell victim to the attacks at both the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. More than 80 nationalities suffered at least one loss from the day’s horrific events, including Japanese, Irish, British, Australian, New Zealanders, Swiss, Indian, Mexican, Brazilian, South African and Canadian. Out of 372 foreign fatalities, 67 people of British nationality died.

3. Ron DiFrancesco managed to escape from collapsing South Tower

37-year-old Canadian DiFrancesco was escaping the World Trade Center South Tower as the second plane hit between the 77th and 85th floors, immediately throwing him against the wall on impact. After making a difficult descent to the ground floor, DiFrancesco managed to exit the building – which then collapsed behind him.

Engulfed in a fireball, DiFrancesco woke in hospital days later with lacerations on his head, burns all over his body and a broken bone in his back. After his miraculous escape he was one of only four people to escape from above the South Tower 81st floor.

9/11: fires raged for 99 days

9/11: fires raged for 99 days

4. Fires raged for 99 days

It took 99 days for the fires at Ground Zero to be extinguished completely. At 8.46am on 11 September the fires started as the first plane hit the North Tower. The remaining fires were eventually put out on 19 December.

5. A third skyscraper fell down

A third skyscraper World Trade Center (WTC) Building 7 – a 47-story building and one of the largest in downtown Manhattan fell during the attacks. It went largely unnoticed in the media because it hadn’t been hit by a plane. It is commonly believed that ‘ancillary damage’ from the collapses of the Twin Towers led to the collapse of WTC Building 7.

The 9/11 Commission Report states: “The total collapse of the third huge skyscraper late in the afternoon September 11th was reported as if it were an insignificant footnote… most people never saw video of Building 7’s collapse… Incredibly, it is virtually impossible to find any mention of Building 7 in newspapers, magazines, or broadcast media reports after September 11th.”

6. Code messages were sent out online by 9/11 conspirators

It is claimed that one of the 9/11 conspirators – Abu Abdul Rahman – sent a coded love post on an Internet chat room to his “German girlfriend” weeks before the attack, who turned out to be fellow 9/11 conspirator Ramzi Binalshibh.

The message allegedly read: “The first semester commences in three weeks. Two high schools [Twin Towers] and two universities [Washington DC targets] … This summer will surely be hot …19 [the eventual number of hijackers] certificates for private education and four exams [the number of planes used]. Regards to the professor. Goodbye.”

CNN reports that about three weeks before 9/11, targets were assigned to four teams, with three of them bearing a code name. The US Capitol building was called ‘The Faculty of Law;’ the Pentagon became ‘The Faculty of Fine Arts;’ and the North Tower of the World Trade Center was code-named as ‘The Faculty of Town Planning.’

7. One company – Cantor Fitzgerald – lost 2/3 of its workforce

Global financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald was the worst business affected by the 9/11 attacks. Unfortunately, its New York headquarters based on the 101st and 105th floors at One World Trade Center lost 658 out its 960-strong workforce – which amounted to two third of its total NYC staff.

After the tragedy hit, CEO Howard Lutnick called a colleague and said: “We could shut the firm and attend our friends’ funerals, or we’re going to work harder than we’ve ever worked before to help their families.” And that’s exactly what they did. Ten years later, Cantor Fitzgerald has handed out more than $180 million (£109 million) to the families of the deceased staff and has fulfilled its promise to pay their health care.

8. World Trade Center steel was sold on

What did the US authorities do with the 185,101 tons of steel left at Ground Zero? They recycled it. The American public was outraged because authorities removed the steel before it was properly tested for evidence. Mayor Bloomberg responded by saying: “If you want to take a look at the construction methods and the design, that’s in this day and age what computers do. Just looking at a piece of metal generally doesn’t tell you anything.”

According to the ‘9/11 Research’ Website, the bulk of the steel was shipped to China and India. The Chinese firm Baosteel purchased 50,000 tons at a rate of $120 (£73) per ton. The rest of the steel was used for memorial material across all 50 states.

9. Plane engine survives crash

In the wake of the attacks, engineers volunteered to investigate the structural responses of the WTC buildings. According to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a single engine from one of the planes that struck the Twin Towers miraculously survived the plane crash and the explosion and collapse of the Towers.

After declaring that they’re killing the line of tablets, seeing the enormous success it’s price strike-down had, Hewlett Packard Co are planning to produce “one last run” of TouchPads.

 HP Tablet in STOCK UPDATES

A day after the chief of HP’s personal devices division told Reuters the TouchPad might get a second lease on life, HP announced a temporary about-face on the gadget after being “pleasantly surprised” by the outsized demand generated by a weekend fire-sale.

HP TouchPad Tablet in STOCK

HP TouchPad Tablet

HP slashed the price of its tablet to $99 from $399 and $499 the weekend after announcing the TouchPad’s demise on August 18, part of a raft of decisions intended to move HP away from the consumer and focus on enterprise clientele.

That ignited an online frenzy and long lines at retailers as bargain-hunters chased down a gadget that had been on store shelves just six weeks.

“The speed at which it disappeared from inventory has been stunning,” the company said. “We have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand.”

HP may lose money on every TouchPad in its final production run. According to IHS iSuppli’s preliminary estimates, the 32GB version carries a bill of materials of $318.

“We don’t know exactly when these units will be available or how many we’ll get, and we can’t promise we’ll have enough for everyone. We do know that it will be at least a few weeks before you can purchase,” HP said in a blogpost.

Critics have blasted HP for wavering on pivotal decisions, such as its original stated intention to integrate its webOS software into every device it makes, followed by a decision to stop making webOS gadgets, including the TouchPad.

The storied Silicon Valley giant is struggling to shore up margins as smartphones and tablets eat away at its core PC business, the world’s largest. On August 18, HP said it was also considering spinning off the PC division.

CEO Leo Apotheker is under immense pressure from investors unhappy with HP’s back-and-forth on strategy. The former SAP chief has also been forced to slash HP’s sales estimates three times since he took over last November.

In a resounding rejection of his grand vision, shareholders sent HP shares down almost 20 percent the day it announced its sweeping moves, which included a pricey acquisition of software player Autonomy. That wiped out $16 billion of value from HP in the stock’s worst single-day fall since the Black Monday stock market crash of October 1987.

HP declined to comment beyond the blogpost. Shares in the company were down marginally in after-hours trade on Tuesday.

Omaha, NE (NYSE: BRK.A; BRK.B)—An editorial in today’s Wall Street Journal says that “Berkshire Hathaway will enjoy an effective tax rate of 10.5% on the $300 million in dividends it will receive each year from Bank of America.” That statement is incorrect.

Warren Buffet Bank of America
Warren Buffet saves Bank of America

Virtually all of the stocks that Berkshire owns are held in its property-casualty subsidiaries, and that will be the case with the Bank of America preferred.

The tax treatment for dividends paid by U.S. corporations to property-casualty insurance companies was materially changed by a law passed in 1986. The changes were described in detail in the chairman’s letter included in Berkshire’s 1986 annual report. A minor change in rate was made in 1993. Since that time dividends that insurers receive from U.S. companies incur an effective tax rate of 14.175%. For Berkshire, that rate will apply to dividends it receives from Bank of America.

Warren Buffet injects 5 billion in Bank of America

These moves are great news for the bank’s workers and shareholders, also as for the U.S. taxpayer, which will probably be around the hook if Bank of America’s management flies the business into a mountain. But numerous analysts think that Bank of America will require to raise a great deal much more capital prior to it gets back on sound footing. These analysts think that Bank of America is nonetheless overstating the worth of a few of the assets on its balance sheet. When the business is lastly forced to understand the actual values of those assets, this theory goes, the bank will as soon as once more need to fill a significant capital hole.

Warning: Why You Shouldn’t Follow Buffett Into purchasing Bank of America’s Stock

Why would a big bank like Bank of America, which is can get money from the Fed at an interest of no more than 0.25%, pay 6% to get cash from Buffett? The first plus is that it strengthens the balance sheet, but the tangible common equity is $128 billion, so what will $5 billion do? The bank just had to settle for over $8 billion a mortgage pushback situation, which is still not resolved. Buffett’s $5 billion will be used up quickly.

On September 24th, 2008, Buffett assisted Goldman Sachs (GS) by purchasing GS preferred stock at a 10% discount along with warrants for $5 billion. The warrants can be exercised at $115. The stock was around $110 a week ago. So, the warrants are below price.

Precisely how ended up being the actual moment for that? It turned out merely twenty days into the economic crisis, that didn’t conclude right up until five months later, on March 6th, 2009.

One week afterwards, on October 1st, 2008 he invested $3 billion in General Electric (GE), which required the money because the business paper market was frozen. The GE stock had a discount of 10% interest, similar to the GS investment. He obtained warrants to acquire $3 billion of stock options at $22.50. The stock was trading at $15 one week ago. The warrants are underwater.

Lets draw some conclusions: Two big companies, which in fact had divisions or subsidiaries in the business of funding companies, were happy to shell out 10% interest to acquire funds from Buffett. Wasn’t that a reasonable forewarning for the crisis? The warrants have become basically worthless. Therefore, it appears like Mr. Buffett has made a great interest rate, however otherwise absolutely no gain on the investments. Additionally, he still had to go through the deepening financial crisis in 2008-2009 that presented us to “within 10 minutes of shutting down the entire banking system,” according to Senator Chris Dodd.

Steve Jobs resigns forced by pancreatic cancer?

Steve Jobs resigned as Apple’s CEO. Tim Cook is the new CEO.

Comex, the teenage hacker who developed JailbreakMe, an iPhone tool for users to download applications that have not been approved by Apple has been hired, of course, by Apple.

Nicholas Allegra or Comex, as the hacker is better known among iPhone users, has launched JailbreakMe 2.0 last year, the tool that made a lot of problem to Apple.

Comex, now 19, claimed he has been hired by the technology giant as an intern.

Comex, the JailbreakMe developer claims he has been hired by Apple.

Comex, the JailbreakMe developer claims he has been hired by Apple.

Comex wrote on his Twitter page:

“It’s been really, really fun, but it’s also been a while and I’ve been getting bored.

“So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple.”

Apple made no comment on whether or not Nicholas Allegra has become its employee.

Jailbreakme 2.0, which has been developed by Comex, works on all iPhone’s types which are running Apple’s iOS4 operating system.

The download tool, launched in 2010, was the first that can be accessed through the iPhone’s own system rather than via an external computer.

Users can simply visit JailbreakMe.com on their iPhone and download the application and its instructions of use. It can be also easily removed, as the jailbreak’s developer claim.

Comex explained at that time:

“A jailbreak is simply the ability to run apps and use themes and tweaks not approved by Apple.”

“Jail-breaking doesn’t slow down your device or use any extra battery, and is fully reversible (just restore in iTunes). A jailbreak lets your device be how you want it.”

Jailbreakme 2.0 allows iPhone owners to legally unlock their devices, so they can run software applications that are not approved by Apple.

If they don’t unlock their devices, they could only download applications from Apple’s iTunes store.

Software developers must get such applications pre-approved by Apple, which sometimes demands changes or rejects programs for what the developers say are vague reasons.

In 2010, the practice known as “jail-breaking” has been allowed through a legal decision. It was one of a few exemptions from a 1998 US law that prohibits users from bypassing technical measures that companies put on their products to prevent unauthorized uses.

The Library of Congress, which oversees the Copyright Office, reviews and authorizes exemptions every 3 years to ensure that the law does not prevent certain non-infringing uses of copyright-protected material.

However, the new government rules will not stop Apple from continuing its practice of disabling jail-broken phones with software upgrades.

Subsequently, owners of such devices might not be able to take advantage of software improvements and they are still under the risk of voiding their warranty.

Hurricane Irene: 10 deaths and millions of power outages.

A hurricane name can’t tell you about the storm’s power, although September’s hurricanes have a record of being strongest, but its name can tell you how many have already been in the season.

With a huge quantity of information from storm-tracking stations, scientists need a short, easy to understand naming convention for hurricanes in order to process them as quickly as possible.

Before 1950, hurricanes didn’t have names.

In the past, the most memorable hurricanes were simply described, such as the “1935 Labor Day hurricane” and the “1821 Norfolk and Long Island hurricane.”

A hurricane name can't tell you about the storm's power, although September's hurricanes have a record of being strongest, but its name can tell you how many have already been in the season.

A hurricane name can't tell you about the storm's power, although September's hurricanes have a record of being strongest, but its name can tell you how many have already been in the season.

Since 1950, hurricanes began getting names, but the same names were repeated each year until 1953, which became confusing.

From 1953 until 1979, it was customary to use only female names, supposedly after girlfriends and wives of Army and Navy meteorologists.

The current system began in 1979, and runs alphabetically through male and female names starting with a name beginning with the letter A, such as Arlene for this year.

Every year the names are different from the last until the six-year cycle restarts.

In 2011, the following names have been allocated:

Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katia, Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince, Whitney.

In 2012 the names will begin with Alberto, Beryl, Chris, and so on.

The last time Irene name was used was in 2005, the same year Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.

Like 74 other Atlantic hurricanes, Katrina’s name has been permanently retired to reduce confusion and show respect for those who lost their lives in the hurricane.

All hurricanes that result in extraordinary loss of life have their names retired, and are replaced by another name beginning with the same letter. The name Katrina was replaced with Katia, which will be the name assigned to the 11th hurricane in the 2011 season.

Irene 2005 never hit ashore and only reached Category 2, according to Saffir/Simpson Hurricane scale.

In 2011 Hurricane Irene is expected to reach Category 4 by the time it comes ashore.

A cap belonging to John Lennon is also expected to attract huge interest and carries an estimate of up to £4,000.

Among the more unusual items up for sale is a compulsory purchase order issued for the famous Cavern Club before it was filled in with concrete in the early 1970s.

The order, dated November 17 1970, carries an estimate of up to £5,500.

Other Beatles Memorabilia collected from the Mathew Street venue include a piece of the stage, which could fetch £1,600 to £1,800.

A programme of the Cavern Club reopening, carried out by then prime minister Harold Wilson in July 1966, has a guide price of £80 to £120.

The auction is also inviting bids for a telegram addressed to “Mr. G Starkex” sent by comedy star Peter Sellers to Ringo Starr and first wife Maureen on August 21 1968.

The message is to let them know that the weather is holding up for Sellers’ visit to see them.

“The annual sale, part of the Beatles Convention in Liverpool, is attracting huge levels of interest,” the organizers said.

Stephen Bailey, manager of the Liverpool Beatles Shop which is staging the sale, said:

“The memorabilia has just kept coming in and there’s a lot of excitement building.

“We have several signed singles this year and they always attract a lot of interest from fans and collectors.

“But it’s always the more unusual items which capture the imagination of the buyers.”

There are a total of 322 lots being sold in the auction, which will take place today in the Paul McCartney Auditorium at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

This apparently much-needed injection has reassured Bank of America’s clobbered shareholders, and the stock is up 25% on the news.

For his $5 billion, Buffett can also be obtaining the proper to purchase a staggering 700 million Bank of America typical shares at $7.14 a share–options which are currently within the cash. This signifies 7% dilution to Bank of America’s typical stockholders.

Put simply, Buffett is obtaining a favored safety having to pay 6% a 12 months that’s safeguarded from dilution from long term funds raises AND a choice to purchase 7% with the company–all for $5 billion. That is costly cash. But offered that Bank of America waited as well lengthy to increase funds, it is also obviously the very best offer they could get.

“We are building the best franchise in financial services and we have laid out a clear plan to deliver long-term shareholder value,” said Bank of America Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan. “I remain confident that we have the capital and liquidity we need to run our business.  Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and Chief Executive Officer commented:

Bank of America is focused on their customers and on serving them well. That’s what customers want, and that’s the company’s strategy.”

A private gone AWOL of Muslim American descent was detained near Fort Hood.

He informed police investigators that he wanted to damage fellow members of the military from the military services base, law enforcement boss in Killeen, Texas, claimed Thursday.

[googlead tip=”vertical_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”]

Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo is expected to face federal government criminal charges soon after his police arrest, Chief Dennis Baldwin claimed. Baldwin mentioned that he knew of no additional threats for the location and also that Abdo had not any accomplices, “as far as I know.” The Chief officer made no other comments about the AWOL status of the detained soldier.

AWOL Campbell

Fbi representatives detected a bevy of potential bomb-making elements inside Abdo’s room, FBI spokesman Erik Vasys mentioned. Abdo, twenty-one, turned down deployment to Afghanistan and later had gone absent out of Fort Campbell in Kentucky following being accused of possessing child porn material, Vasys mentioned.

After a tip-off from a neighborhood weapon shop, Killeen police force detained Abdo at a traffic stop Wednesday, Vasys stated.

Two years ago, during 2009, that very same Texas army base had been the target of the firing spree that mortally wounded 13 individuals. Nidal Hasan had been charged with those killings. He’s yet another Muslim American soldier.

Gun store alerts police force to AWOL soldier

“Thanks to quick action by a Texas firearm dealer in alerting local police force to a suspicious character, and a prompt and vigorous response by the Killeen Law enforcement officials Department, we may well have averted a repeat of the tragic 2009 radical Islamic terror attack on our nation’s largest military installation,” stated Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, the House Army Caucus chairman.

Carter mentioned: “We now have an example of what works to prevent these type attacks, and as the coming days reveal more details about this attempt, we can determine better ways to thwart similar efforts in the future”

Carter’s office mentioned Killeen firearm supplier Guns Galore, the same store utilized by Hasan to acquire guns allegedly utilised in his assault, tipped off law enforcement officials with regards to a “suspicious male” whom obtained gunpowder, shotgun ammo, as well as a newspaper for a semiautomatic pistol.
Greg Ebert, a retired police force officer who works at Guns Galore, mentioned a young man showed up in the store Tuesday afternoon and browsed for about 20 minutes. He selected six one-pound canisters of smokeless gunpowder, Ebert explained.

AWOL soldier

Then, Ebert reported, the man asked the store owner questions about the nature of smokeless powder.

“That is a red flag for me,” Ebert mentioned. “He should know. Why is he buying that much?”

Ebert reported the man also picked up one magazine and shotgun shells, and then left in a cab. After discussing the matter at length with the owner, Ebert called police force.

The soldier also purchased uniforms with Fort Hood unit patches from the neighborhood military surplus store, Carter’s office stated, citing police.

After Abdo’s arrest, police searched his hotel room and backpack and found six pounds of smokeless powder, Christmas lights and battery-operated clocks – which were apparently intended to create a timing and triggering device – sugar, shrapnel, a pressure cooker, and shotgun shells that were being dismantled for raw explosives.

The materials were sufficient to create a couple of bombs, a Department of Defense official reported to BelleNews. The awol soldier did not comment.

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”centrat”]

Inside of the soldier’s rucksack, law enforcement officials also uncovered “Islamic extremist booklets,” a .40-calliber gun along with a grocery list of elements to get a bomb, a law enforcement officials official reported.

The investigation is still on-going in this case. It’s extremely likely that Abdo acted on his own and there is no evidence up to this point that links him to any terrorist groups, law enforcement officers declared.

“Islam is a much more peaceful and tolerant religion than it is an aggressive religion,” he explained. “I don’t believe that Islam allows me to operate in any kind of warfare at all, including the U.S. military and any war it partakes in. I believe that our first duty as a Muslim is to serve God.”

Hasan, the prime suspect in the 2009 Fort Hood killings, could face the death penalty. His trial is set to begin March 5, 2012.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”dreapta”]

Witnesses at a preliminary hearing identified Hasan as the man who walked calmly through a medical building on the country’s largest military base, shooting and sometimes reloading his handgun as he shouted “Allahu akbar,” which means “God is great” in Arabic.

A statement on the Fort Hood website acknowledged Abdo’s arrest but said it had no connection to the base.

It reported Abdo had been assigned to Company E of the 101st Airborne Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team.

“Since he is in the custody of civilian authorities, jurisdiction over any potential new charges is yet to be determined. If returned to military control, he may face additional charges including AWOL,” the statement reported.

Fort Hood spokesman Chris Haug said base officials have no indication that Abdo ever tried to obtain onto Fort Hood between the time he went AWOL and the time of his arrest.

A June 15th hearing recommended that Abdo be court-martialed.  He went AWOL after that.

In an interview this past year, Abdo explained felt compelled to remain true to his faith.

“We have two things that I believe make us American, and that’s freedom of religion and freedom of choice,” he explained.

When he first signed up for the military, Abdo did not think his religion would be an issue. “I was under the impression that I could serve both the U.S. Army and my God simultaneously,” he mentioned.

But as his deployment neared, he began to rethink things and eventually worked up the courage to approach his unit and tell them how he felt. AWOL soldier is currently in custody, awaiting a trial.

A new project begins at the University of Michigan as the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund marks ten years in the search for a cure of bipolar disorder.

According to a University of Michigan Health System statement  posted on its website on August 22, the new stem cell lines developed from the skin of adults living with bipolar disorder are providing researchers at the University of Michigan Health System an unprecedented opportunity to delve into the genetic and biological underpinnings of the devastating mood disorder.

Scientists will be able to link new findings – such as how gene expression is affected by different medications – to extensive clinical and demographic data from the cell donors, who are also participants in an ongoing long-term study of hundreds of individuals with bipolar disorder.

The induced pluripotent stem cells could offer new hope for unlocking the secrets of bipolar disorder.

The induced pluripotent stem cells could offer new hope for unlocking the secrets of bipolar disorder.

The new research comes as the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund, based at the University of Michigan Depression Center, prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of its establishment by Waltraud “Wally” Prechter following the July 2001 death of her husband, Heinz. Before he took his life, few people knew that the well-known automotive entrepreneur wrestled with bipolar disorder.

“Currently the best treatments for bipolar disorder are only effective for 30 percent to 50 percent of patients,” said Melvin McInnis, M.D., the Thomas B and Nancy Upjohn Woodworth Professor of Bipolar Disorder and Depression at the University of Michigan Medical School and associate director at the University of Michigan Depression Center.

“New discoveries have been limited, in part due to the lack of access to tissue and cells from individuals with bipolar disorder. But that is now changing because of the Prechter research program and advances in stem cell research.”

The new stem cell lines – among the first to be created by the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute Consortium for Stem Cell Therapies – were made from fibroblasts from skin samples donated by adult research volunteers both with and without bipolar disorder.[googlead tip=”patrat_mic” aliniat=”dreapta”]

In the lab, scientists can coax these skin cells into behaving like embryonic stem cells. Known as induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSC, these, in turn, can be manipulated to develop into different types of body cells, including brain cells.

“We will be able to see if there are differences in how the neurons of a person with bipolar disorder make connections, determine how they respond to different medications and explore potential deficiencies in signaling pathways,” explained Sue O’Shea, Ph.D., a professor of cell and developmental biology at the Medical School who leads the stem cell lab with Gary Smith, Ph.D, professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

“So far, five lines have been created. The goal, is to develop 30 cell lines – 20 from people with bipolar disorder and 10 control subjects. Creating each line is a painstaking and expensive process.”

“We often think of stems cells being used in therapies to treat disease, but this is a great example of stem cells’ usefulness for studying the mechanisms of disease.”

“The iPS cells renew themselves, so they’re an unlimited source of material and offer hope to individuals with bipolar disorder.”

Still, the researchers caution, new treatments spurred by this work could be a decade or more away.

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, affects 5.7 million adults in the United States. It is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and marked by significant changes in mood, thoughts, energy and behavior.

Heinz Prechter, the well known automotive entrepreneur wrestled with bipolar disorder.

[googlead tip=”lista_medie” aliniat=”dreapta”]Because bipolar disorder runs in families, research at University of Michigan (U-M) has focused on studying disease genes. There is no single gene that “causes” someone to become bipolar, but the disease has its roots in genetic vulnerabilities.

The Prechter Bipolar Genetic Repository already houses more than 1,500 genetic samples from people with bipolar disorder and healthy controls from studies at U-M along with collaborating sites: Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Cornell and Penn State. It is the first independently funded bipolar genetics repository in the nation. In addition to sharing the knowledge between the different universities, confidential, coded DNA repository samples and clinical information will be made available to scientists worldwide to accelerate and share clinical breakthroughs in evaluating and treating bipolar disorder.

The Prechter longitudinal study has already collected more than 5 years’ worth of data.

“I’m really proud that over the last 10 years my husband’s legacy has grown to include the strides we’re making to understand bipolar disorder and find new treatments,” Wally Prechter says.

“Bipolar is like any other illness – cancer, diabetes, heart disease – and deserves the same urgency.”

“That lack of effective treatment is a big reason for the high risk of suicide or suicide attempts among people with bipolar disorder. Anywhere from 5% to 15% of bipolar patients will attempt or commit suicide sometime in their lives,” said McInnis.

“Depression caused by Heinz Prechter’s bipolar disorder affected his whole being,” said Wally Prechter.

“He was extremely exuberant and happy, and very, very optimistic, to the point that I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve never met anyone like that.’ But when he was depressed it was to the point that he would stay home and just sit in a chair and look out at the river,” she said.

The memory of how her brilliant husband was reduced to such a low, unable to tell anyone what he was going through, is part of what continues to drive her today.

U-M Health System CEO and Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D., points to the research as a great example of the strides that can be made when public institutions and private donors collaborate on research that benefits the public.

“The Prechter research shows how we continue to fuel innovation through exciting collaborations that highlight our commitment to bench-to-bedside medical advances,” Pescovitz said.

“We are very fortunate to have Wally and her family as part of our Michigan family.”

Umar al-Basrawi wrote:

“Is there not amongst you a Sayyid Nosair al-Masri (may Allah release him) to cut the tongue of this lowly Jew and shut it forever. Just as Sayyid (may Allah release him) did with the Jew Kahane.”

[googlead tip=”vertical_mic”]Al-Basrawi also wrote that David Letterman had made reference to both Osama bin Laden and Kashmiri and said that Letterman had demonstrated on his neck how Kashmiri died.

Sayyid Nosair al-Masri was tried for the murder of Rabbi Meir Kahane in 1990.

According to Adam Raisman, SITE analyst, the Shumukh-al-Islam forum is a site where messages from Al Qaeda frequently first appear online in the United States.

“It’s a clearing house for Al-Qaeda material. It gets the most Al-Qaeda supporters,” he said.

Adam Raisman ranked the threat as more worrisome than the “warning” posted against South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone last year.

“This was a more explicit threat,” he said.

“It was direct and to the point.”

David Letterman, who is not Jewish, apparently made jokes on the accused terrorist leader Ilyas Kashmiri death, who was killed by an US airstrike in Pakistan on June 5. The forum contributor said Letterman put a hand to his neck and demonstrated the “way of slaughter.”

“He showed his evil nature and deep hatred for Islam and Muslims, and said that Ilyas Kashmiri was killed and he joined bin Laden,” he wrote.

“We ask Allah to paralyze his tongue and grant the sincere monotheists his neck.”

The news was first reported by Stars and Stripes.

SITE group is now trying to find out more information about the commenter, who has more than 1,200 messages on the forum. Adam Raisman also advised David Letterman to take “as much precaution as he would with an obsessed fan.”

There was no comment from CBS or Letterman.

A “potentially catastrophic” bomb plot hatched by an expelled high-school student has been thwarted in the US city of Tampa, Florida, according to the police.

“We were probably able to thwart a potentially catastrophic event the likes of which the city of Tampa has not seen and hopefully never will,”  Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor told a news conference.

Police named the suspect, as Jared Cano, 17, who is accused of planning to plant a device at Freedom High School in Hillsborough County, north Tampa and detonate it as students returned on Tuesday.

Fuel, shrapnel and plastic tubing, along with timing and fusing devices were found at his home, police said.

The teenager had previously been arrested on several juvenile charges.

[googlead tip=”vertical_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”] “Mr. Cano, who had been expelled from the school, was hoping to kill or injure more people than the 1999 shooting by two students at Columbine High School in Colorado,” police chief Jane Castor said.

In April 1999, two students at Columbine High School in Colorado killed 12 students and one teacher in one of the deadliest school massacres in US history.

“Mr. Cano was arrested on Tuesday night after an unnamed individual came forth with information about the plot,” said Jane Castor.

“That’s what we need in this community, to have the citizens involved in keeping this community safe,” she added.

“And that was a prime example of allowing us to avoid a very serious event yesterday.”

In addition to the alleged bomb-making material found in his home, investigators also found drawings of rooms inside the school and statements about his intent to kill people, police said.

“The minute-by-minute plot targeted specific school staff and any students who were nearby,” police said.

St Petersburg Times reported that when Jared Cano appeared in court on Wednesday he was asked by the judge if he had anything to say.

Cano began: “The plan wasn’t…”, but a defence lawyer interrupted and advised him to say no more, reports the newspaper.

Chris Farkas, Freedom High School principal told media that Jared Cano had been expelled in April 2010 because of a non-school-related incident.

Farkas said of his former student’s arrest: “Once I found out and saw the information and saw what was taken from the apartment complex, that was when the reality and the fear set in that this was a real situation.”

The 2011 finale of  So You Think You Can Dance was a display of strong performances, the four finalists gave their best. Head judge Nigel Lythgoe remarked in a comment on Thursday night that the winner will be one of the two remaining women:  Sasha Mallory or Melanie Moore.

After 11.5 million votes the competition came down to the two women.

The winner with almost 50 percent of the Top Four vote was Melanie Moore. She was crowned America’s Favorite Dancer.

“You two are both exquisite dancers, you have both been amazing,” Cat Deeley told the dual finalists – only moments before announcing the winner.
For the first time in all the eight seasons two females were the top contestants.

The crowning was a beautiful moment, the crowds cheering and confetti falling upon everyone, pyrotechnics making her face seem even more glamorous and Moore was crowned America’s Favorite Dancer.

[googlead tip=”lista_mica” aliniat=”stanga”]”Thank you,” is what she could utter as tears flowed heavily down her beautiful face, smiling, right then she was lifted on their arms by the entire Top 20.

The rest of the contestants for the So You Think You Can Dance finale came Mallory second with a 32 percent of the vote; Germar, third; and Gadduang, fourth.

So You Think You Can Dance 2011 Finale – the toughest contest

[googlead tip=”vertical_mare” aliniat=”dreapta”] In the beginning there were thousands and thousands of wannabes, nine weeks ago, and it came down to only twenty dancers fighting for the $250k prize and a sponsorship deal. After the weeks went by, only four contestants, some would argue the best, made it to the finals.

Moore, 19, of Marietta, Ga., had been the highest rated contestant from the start of the season when she and Germar amazed the judges with their statue routine. Moore was imersed in to the material and seemed to enjoy every new partnership. This lead to her being called an “actress”, in addition of being a dancer.

Mallory, 23, of Bakersfield, Calif., was tied to Alexander Fost in the beginning, but they didn’t reach an understanding, they had no chemistry. After they were separated she immediately climbed to the top with emotional routines – such as her wall routine in season 7’s with Kent Boyd – as well as strong and powerful, like the breakfast table routine from season 4, when Twitch was her partner.

The Final Four’s only B-Boy, Gadduang, 25, born in West Valley City, Utah, was named the underdog because he was forced to dance out of his style all season long. His “ace-in-the-sleeve” was his “sweetie-pie factor” and that’s what  won Murphy over, even though he was the only finalist from the four who was perpetually at the bottom of this season.

The Guam native, Germar, 22, had began the competition at a disadvantage, after having been shot in the shoulder just a couple of years ago, but he didn’t let his shoulder injury hold him back and judge Mary Murphy even said that he’s to be “a beast just like the girls.” When his mother came from Guam to watch him dance he broke into tears. He’s a “crier,”, in his own words.

Mark Duggan’s death forensic report.

The man who was shot by police, sparking the wave of rioting that has hit London, died of a single gunshot wounding his chest. An inquest has heard.

Mark Duggan was deadly shot by armed officers in Ferry Lane, Tottenham, north London, on Thursday, August, 4, after they stopped the minicab he was in to carry out an arrest as part of a pre-planned operation.

Mark Duggan, the man who was shot by police, sparking the wave of rioting that has hit London, died of a single gunshot wounding his chest

[googlead tip=”lista_mica” aliniat=”stanga”]An inquest, which began on Tuesday morning at North London coroner’s court, in High Barnet, heard that Mark Duggan died of a single gunshot wounding his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene onThursday at 6:41p.m.

Last Thursday evening, officers from the Metropolitan Police (Met) Operation Trident and Special Crime Directorate 11, accompanied by officers from CO19, the Met’s specialist firearms command, stopped the silver Toyota Estima minicab in Ferry Lane, close to Tottenham Hale tube station, to arrest Mark Duggan.

According to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), Mark Duggan, whose shooting by police sparked London’s riots, did not fire a shot at police officers before they killed him.

Releasing the initial findings of ballistics tests, the police watchdog said a CO19 firearms officer fired two bullets, and that a bullet that lodged in a police radio was “consistent with being fired from a police gun”.

The IPCC said Duggan was carrying a loaded gun, but it had no evidence that the weapon had been fired. It said tests were continuing.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”]The officer who fired the fatal shots has been removed from firearms duties, which is standard procedure, pending the IPCC investigation. One theory, not confirmed by the IPCC, is that the bullet became lodged in the radio from a ricochet or after passing through Duggan.

The IPCC’s statement said the bullet lodged in the police radio was a “jacketed round“. This is a police-issue bullet and is “consistent with having been fired from a [police] Heckler and Koch MP5“, it said.

The statement said:

“Our investigators will be examining recordings of radio transmissions from both police and London ambulance service, including 999 calls, with a view to tracing further witnesses. We will also be examining any intelligence and surveillance material leading up to the planning of the operation.”

The non-police firearm found at the scene was a converted BBM Bruni self-loading pistol. The gun was found to have a “bulleted cartridge” in the magazine, which is being subjected to further forensic tests.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”]The police officer whose radio was hit was taken to Homerton hospital where he was examined and discharged later that night.

The minicab driver was not injured but was badly shaken by what he saw, the IPCC said. His account, as well as those of the officers, is being examined along with the forensic evidence.

The police watchdog said it was examining CCTV footage of the area, including from buses passing by at the time.

Colin Sparrow, the deputy senior investigator for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), told the brief hearing that the organization’s “complex investigation” could take 4 to 6 months.

Andrew Walker, the coroner for the northern district of Greater London, adjourned the hearing until December, 12, when a pre-inquest review will be held.

Semone Wilson, Mark Duggan's fiancee, at North London coroner's court, in High Barnet, Tuesday morning

Walker told members of Duggan’s family, including his fiancee, Semone Wilson:

“Can I just offer my deepest sympathies to the family of Mark Duggan.”

“As members of the family will know, in due course there will be an inquest touching the death of Mark Duggan and this is the first stage in that process.”

“Of course, as well as offering our deepest sympathies to members of the family, I would like to reassure members of the family that we will be working closely with the IPCC throughout the process.”

According to Rachel Cerfontyne, the IPCC commissioner:

“Any concerns expressed by the wider public about a perceived lack of information from the IPCC should be considered in the context that I am only willing to share information once I have had it independently verified and once the people who are directly involved in this case – including Mr Duggan’s family and community leaders – have been fully informed.”

After the hearing, the family said they were “distressed” by the rioting in the wake of his death. In a statement on their behalf, Helen Shaw, from the organization Inquest, said:

“The family wants everyone to know that the disorder going on has nothing to do with finding out what has happened to Mark. They also want people to know they are deeply distressed by the disorder affecting communities across the country.”

So far, the specialists found the first three reels of the six-reel film made in 1923. No other copy of the movie is known to exist.

The White Shadowis a “wild, atmospheric melodrama” starring Betty Compson in dual roles as twin sisters, one angelic and the other “without a soul”. The film was made when Hitchcock was just 24 years old.

The White Shadow Alfred Hitchcock

The White Shadow Alfred Hitchcock

The White Shadow was directed by Graham Cutts, and Alfred Hitchcock is credited as writer, assistant director, editor and art director.

Hitchcock, whose suspense classics include Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window and Vertigo,  made his own directing debut two years later.

According to Annette Melville, Foundation Director, the reels of “The White Shadow” were found among films donated to the archive by the family of New Zealand projectionist and collector Jack Murtagh. “The White Shadow” was among the many silent-era movies salvaged by Hastings projectionist Jack Murtagh. After his death in 1989, the highly flammable nitrate prints were sent to the Film Archive for safekeeping by his grandson Tony Osborne.

“At the time, people said the plot was improbable. I’m putting a polite spin on it. Many said it was ridiculous,”

Melville said.

“It’s a totally crazy, zany plot with soul migration back and forth and all these improbable meetings.”

[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”] “The White Shadow”, made in 1923, have turned up in a cache of unidentified American nitrate prints safeguarded for the last 23 years by the archive. The surviving reels will be preserved at Park Road Post Production in Wellington. Black and white duplicate negatives will be struck from the original nitrate material and color prints made which will replicate the tints used in the original print.

The Hitchcock film is just one of the treasures uncovered, including John Ford’s Upstream. They all owe their survival to Mr Murtagh’s passion for early cinema.

A restored print of “The White Shadow” will be shown September 22 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences headquarters in Beverly Hills. The program also will feature two recently rediscovered short films, including one directed by and starring silent-era superstar Mabel Normand.  [googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”dreapta”]

David Sterritt, chairman of the US-based National Society of Film Critics and author of The Films of Alfred Hitchcock, said the film’s discovery was one of the most significant developments in memory for scholars, critics, and admirers of Hitchcock’s extraordinary body of work. The “lost” films would be preserved over the next three years in partnership with the US National Film Preservation Foundation, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, George Eastman House, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art and UCLA Film & Television Archive and made available in the United States.

Copies of the films would also be publicly available in New Zealand.
