Two convicted killers are on the run after escaping from a maximum security jail in New York.

They used power tools to cut through steel pipes at a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border and escape through a manhole, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on June 6.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo described Richard Matt and David Sweat as “dangerous individuals”.

They cut through steel pipes at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora and fled through a man hole.

Andrew Cumo said the prison breakout was the first escape from the facility in 150 years.

“It was an elaborate plot,” the governor added.

David Sweat, 34, was serving a life sentence without parole for the first degree murder of Broome County sheriff’s deputy.

Richard Matt, 48, was given a jail term of 25 years to life for the kidnapping and beating a man to death in 1997.

The two men’s adjoining cells were found to be empty during a morning check, said Anthony Annuci, the acting state corrections commissioner.

“A search revealed that there was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which these inmates escaped,” he added.

“They went onto a catwalk which is about six stories high. We estimate they climbed down and had power tools and were able to get out to this facility through tunnels, cutting away at several spots.”

Police are trying to determine how the men acquired the tools.

More than 200 officers are searching for the prisoners, using sniffer dogs and aerial surveillance.

Clinton Correctional Facility is about 20 miles from the Canadian border. Roadblocks have been set up in the area, according to local media.

David Sweat is described as a white male, 5ft 11in tall, with brown hair and green eyes. He weighs 165lb and has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers.

Richard Matt is also white and is 6ft tall.

He has black hair and hazel eyes and weighs around 210lbs.

Richard Matt’s tattoos include “Mexico Forever” on his back, a heart on his chest and left shoulder and a Marine Corps insignia on his right shoulder.

Californian authorities are searching for fugitive homeless Eduardo Rosas Cruz, who has refused treatment for tuberculosis and may be contagious.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Eduardo Rosas Cruz, 25, of Mexico.

Eduardo Rosas Cruz was diagnosed with tuberculosis at a local emergency room in March but fled when asked to remain in the area for treatment.

Health officials are concerned he may be infected with a drug-resistant strain of the illness.

“We need help getting him in,” San Joaquin County public health officer Dr Alvaro Garza told US media.

“We’ve not been able to find him in places he’s told us he’s going to be.”

Californian authorities are searching for fugitive homeless Eduardo Rosas Cruz, who has refused treatment for tuberculosis and may be contagious

It is currently unclear if Eduardo Rosas Cruz is contagious, but he has not completed a nine-month course of medicine required for treatment.

Tuberculosis – spread through air when an infected person sneezes or coughs – can be fatal if left untreated.

In March, Eduardo Rosas Cruz arrived in hospital in San Joaquin complaining of a severe cough, shortness of breath, high fever and weight loss.

After he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, he was told to stay in a nearby motel and wait for a health worker to deliver medication.

Eduardo Rosas Cruz did not comply, forcing government officials to add him to a state-wide law enforcement database and later obtain an arrest warrant.

Health officials cannot, by law, force a person to be treated for tuberculosis. They can however isolate the infected person from the public.

“We’re interested in this guy because he broke the orders of the health officer,” San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Stephen Taylor told the Associated Press News Agency.

“He could be in a homeless shelter. He could be around the corner from the courthouse,” he added.

Canadian police arrested Justin Bourque suspected of killing three officers and wounding two others in Moncton, New Brunswick.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in New Brunswick tweeted that Justin Bourque was arrested just after midnight in Moncton.

News of the arrest came after a huge manhunt went into its second night.

Schools and government offices were closed and residents told to stay indoors during the operation.

Police said residents of Moncton could now leave their homes.

A grainy image purporting to show Justin Bourque being taken into custody was circulating on social media.

The mayor of Moncton, George Leblanc, told CBC: “On the one hand we feel very happy, almost elated that this person has been arrested and this ordeal is over.

“But at the same time we have a great sense of sadness for the losses that our families have suffered.”

Earlier, police said the suspect, who was wearing camouflage gear and carrying rifles, had been spotted several times in north Moncton.

Dozens of police officers were seen scouring the search area with weapons drawn. Armoured security trucks were also visible.

One of the wounded Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers has been released from hospital, and one remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The officers were shot while responding to a report of an armed man at the north-west side of the town at about 20:00 local time on Wednesday.

It was the deadliest attack on Canada’s police force since four officers were killed by a gunman on a farm in the western province of Alberta in 2005.

Moncton remains on lockdown as Canadian authorities hunt for suspect Justin Bourque accused of shooting five police officers, killing three, on Wednesday.

Officials say Justin Bourque, 24, was spotted multiple times early on Thursday morning.

They have warned people to stay inside and lock their doors.

The two wounded Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers are undergoing surgery in hospital and their conditions remain unknown.

“We have an armed and dangerous individual and we do not know where he is,” RCMP Commanding Officer Roger Brown told reporters, asking citizens to remain “vigilant”.

RCMP Supt. Marlene Snowman warned that the suspect was armed with high-powered firearms.

“He’s not known to us, he’s a young person,” she said.

“We’re doing a complete investigation to learn as much as we can about him, about his history, what may have sparked this.”

New Brunswick Premier David Alward said he felt “incredible grief” stemming from the incident.

The officers were shot while responding to a report of an armed man at the north-west side of the town at about 20:00 local time on Wednesday,

Police established road blocks in an effort to seal a perimeter around the residential area and combed nearby woods, searching through the night and into the morning.

Schools in the town are closed, buses are not running, and postal service has been suspended.

Pedestrians and motorists have been asked to stay away from the area.

Justin Bourque was spotted after daylight, but Marlene Snowman warned he was “very mobile”.

“There’s no question that we’re going to continue this search in order to apprehend him,” she said.

Paris authorities have launched a manhunt after a gunman attacked offices of the newspaper Liberation and fired outside the HQ of the bank Societe Generale.

A photographer, 27, was critically hurt at Liberation. The gunman later forced a motorist to drive him to the Champs Elysees before allowing him to go.

Police are looking for the same man who broke into the Paris offices of the 24-hour news channel BFMTV on Friday.

Police have now been stationed outside all the main media offices in Paris.

At a news conference, investigators held up two images, one of the suspect in a street and another picture, from BFMTV surveillance cameras, which was earlier shown on Le Parisien‘s website.

Paris prosecutor Francis Molins said that a lone gunman appeared to be behind the three attacks and the hijacking. He said the suspect had not yet been identified and the motive was still unclear.

The man is said to be between 40 and 45, and shaven-headed.

The gunman had walked into BFMTV on Friday morning and emptied the chamber of his gun in the reception area.

“Next time, I will not miss you,” the man had said to an editor he threatened.

A police helicopter hung over the Champs Elysees amid fears the gunman might be heading towards the Eiffel Tower, but it is speculated that he might have gone into the metro.

People have been encouraged to stay indoors.

Paris authorities have launched a manhunt after a gunman attacked offices of the newspaper Liberation and fired outside the HQ of the bank Societe Generale

Police say the suspect is calm and assured and each time has walked away from the scene of his attacks.

French media say the suspect told the motorist he hijacked that he was armed with grenades.

President Francois Hollande, who is in Israel, said the priority was “to stop an individual who had tried to kill and could try to kill again”.

At 10:15 local time on Monday, the gunman entered the Paris offices of Liberation, near the Place de la Republique in the east of the city, and opened fire.

He injured a photographer in the chest and stomach before escaping. Liberation said three spent cartridges had been found.

The gunman did not say anything during the attack, Liberation reported.

Some two hours later, the bank Societe Generale confirmed that a man opened fire outside its headquarters in the western business district of La Defense. No-one was injured, the bank said.

One witness of the bank shooting told Le Figaro that he heard a large bang and saw a man wearing a khaki coat and a cap and carrying a shotgun.

The gunman’s second shot caused panic and the man then disappeared down some stairs on to a street, the witness said.

Police say the gunman then hijacked a car in Nanterre, close to La Defense, and forced the driver to take him to the Champs Elysees, where he was dropped near the metro station George V.

Liberation‘s deputy editor Fabrice Tassel said the victim there was fighting for his life.

The victim – who has not been named – was said to be a freelance assistant photographer who had just arrived at the newspaper office to work on a fashion photoshoot.

Police have sealed off the area around Liberation‘s offices. Interior Minister Manuel Valls has visited the scene, along with Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti and the Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoe.

Manuel Valls said: “As long as this person is still on the loose and we do not know the motives, this represents a threat. We must move fast.”

Liberation‘s publisher Nicolas Demorand said: “In a democracy, when someone enters a newspaper office with a gun, this is very, very serious, whatever the person’s mental state.”

Boston SWAT officers who handcuffed Dzhokhar Tsarnaev say that they didn’t “have time to be afraid” as they inched toward his hiding spot on Friday.

The SWAT officers from the MBTA held a press conference on Monday, as they were officially recognized for their efforts in taking down Boston Marathon suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev after an all-day manhunt in Watertown.

Watertown was gripped with fear as the sun went down on Friday, when pops of gunfire and the booms of flash grenades were heard – all focused on a boat parked in a Franklin Street driveway.

The well-trained SWAT team then approached David Henneberry’s boat, not knowing whether Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was armed or had rigged the vessel with the same bombs he allegedly used in the attack at the marathon days prior.

SWAT Officer Jeff Campbell – who pulled Dzhokhar Tsarnaev off the boat – noted how the officers had proceeded carefully, saying: “We had no idea if the boat was rigged with explosives. He could have done anything.”

The officers admitted that they were sitting ducks – out in the open in the backyard as they moved in.

Jeff Campbell told former FBI assistant director John Miller in a CBS interview airing on Tuesday: “As we’re approaching what we call the danger zone… That’s the danger zone because there’s no cover for us except that ballistic shield.”

But as they got closer, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev suddenly stood up in the boat, acknowledging that he was ready to surrender.

Officer Jeff Campbell noted that the suspect “looked weak” and was “shaky”.

He told John Miller: “[Dzhokhar Tsarnaev] appeared to be losing consciousness and did have some wounds to his body. You could see the blood on his body.”

Once the suspect was off the boat, Officer Saro Thompson said: “Officer [Kenny] Tran helped me secure the suspect along with other people from different teams that we do not know the names of.”

Sgt. Sean Reynolds, who is also part of the team, told reporters: “You don’t really have time to be afraid.”

Officer Saro Thompson added: “At a time like that, training kicks in. We don’t have emotion going into something like that.

“We ended up putting him in cuffs and we turned him over to the medics after we moved him away from the boat.”

When asked if Dzhokhar Tsarnaev spoke as he was arrested, Saro Thompson said: “I don’t think he had the energy to say anything. Once we got him on the ground, he was compliant and was going in and out of consciousness.”

One of their colleagues, transit police officer Richard H. Donahue, 33, was seriously injured during the wild shootout with the Tsarnaev brothers early on Friday morning.

Officer Saro Thompson said that when he visited Richard H. Donahue in the hospital on Monday, he proudly informed him: “We got him.”

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s older brother Tamerlan died in a hospital after that confrontation, likely from injuries sustained when he was run over by a stolen vehicle driven by Dzhokhar.

The interview with the SWAT officers came after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was read his Miranda Rights on Monday as he was charged with using weapons of mass destruction during an arraignment while he laid in his hospital bed.

During the proceedings in his Boston hospital bed, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev only uttered the word “no” when asked if he could afford a defense attorney.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was arraigned in his hospital bed at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on Monday by a magistrate judge, court officials said.

A probable cause hearing in the case was then set for May 30.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Suspect 2 in the Boston Marathon bombings, has been captured alive in Watertown and taken into custody, police have said.

Gunfire was heard as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was reportedly found hiding in a boat in a backyard in Watertown.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, had escaped on foot early on Friday after a police shootout that claimed the life of his elder brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Three people died and more than 180 were hurt in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings.

Boston Police Department tweeted: “CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody.”

A law enforcement official told the Associated Press news agency that suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was covered in blood.

Police helicopters buzzed overhead, and bomb squad vans and ambulances were in position around the house in Franklin Street in Watertown on Friday night.

CNN reported that a family of ten were removed from the scene and officers were seen carrying children.

The home reportedly belongs to Mr. Henneberry and Elizabeth Henneberry, a couple in their mid-sixties.

At one stage a series of about 15 explosions erupted, which local television channels speculated could have been flash-bang grenades used by the authorities.

A local resident, Anna Bedirian, told Reuters news agency: “There’s about 50 guys there with machine guns and they all got bulletproof vests on, some of them are holding shields.

“There are a couple of armored cars and they’re all standing around.”

Friday night’s breakthrough came less than an hour after authorities lifted a city-wide order for residents to stay indoors, and reopened the transport system, as the trail appeared to have gone cold.

Thousands of SWAT team officers scoured the streets all day in a manhunt that virtually shut down the city.

Officials had shut down all mass transit and warned close to one million people in Boston and some of its suburbs not to leave their homes.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a college student, had fled on foot following a gun battle that left 200 spent rounds and a car chase in which he and his brother hurled explosives at police, authorities said.

Brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev also shot and killed an MIT policeman and severely wounded another officer late on Thursday, authorities said, hours after the FBI released images of marathon-bombing suspects.

Law enforcement officials and family members have identified Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev as ethnic Chechens who had been living in America for about a decade.

The FBI interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011 after a request from a foreign government, US law enforcements officials have confirmed. But agents closed the case after finding no reason for concern.

Boston Marathon attack killed Martin Richard, 8, Krystle Campbell, 29, and Lu Lingzi, 23, a postgraduate student from China.

Authorities have taken three people into custody in connection with the Boston bombings in New Bedford, Massachusetts, 65 miles south of the city, the Boston Globe reports. It is unknown how they were connected to the case.

Large parts of the city of Boston remain in virtual lockdown amid a major manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of two brothers suspected of bombing the city’s marathon on Monday.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, remains at large after he escaped a shoot-out in which another suspect, his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died.

Police said they had searched 60-70% of a locked-down area of a Boston suburb.

Three people died and more than 180 were hurt when two bombs exploded near the finish line of Monday’s Boston Marathon.

On Friday afternoon, Col. Timothy Alben of the Massachusetts State Police said officers in Watertown were searching “door to door, street to street” for the suspect, but there was as yet no word on his whereabouts.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said there were “continuing developments” in the investigation, and that an order to stay indoors remained in place across the whole of Boston and surrounding suburbs.

Earlier the FBI released images of the two men they were hunting in relation to the bombing.

Police said one suspect – widely named in the US media as Tamerlan Tsarnaev – had been killed early on Friday, and they were looking for another suspect, later named as the dead man’s younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Both are said to be of Chechen origin, and are reported to have moved to the US about 10 years ago.

The manhunt began late on Thursday when university police officer Sean Collier, 26, was killed on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus.

Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev carjacked a driver at gunpoint and drove away with the driver still in the car. They later released the man unharmed.

Police chased the suspects, who threw bombs and exchanged gunfire with police, seriously wounding one officer.

In the Boston suburb of Watertown, officers and the men were involved in a gun battle lasting 10 minutes, according to witnesses.

The authorities in Massachusetts Bay have suspended the transport system and no vehicles are being allowed in or out of the Watertown area.

The warning to stay indoors was later extended to the whole of Boston, in what correspondents said was an unprecedented move.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama was briefed on developments in the manhunt and investigation for about an hour in the White House Situation Room.

Secretary of State John Kerry, also at the briefing on video link, said the authorities were “part of the way there” in bringing the Boston terror suspects to justice, AP reported.

Overnight, video footage emerged showing a fully-clothed suspect lying on the floor, surrounded by police. More video was shown by US media of a suspect being led into a police car after being stripped of his clothes.

But it is not clear who the men were, or what happened after their apparent arrests.

Dr. Richard Wolfe, of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said an individual was brought in with multiple blast and gunshot wounds to his upper body.

He was in cardiac arrest when he arrived at hospital and despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at 01:35 a.m., Dr Wolfe said.

The authorities were investigating whether the dead man had a home-made bomb strapped to his body when he was killed, reports said.

Boston police Commissioner Ed Davis said he believed the man being hunted in the Watertown area was a “terrorist”.

“We believe this to be a man who came here to kill people,” he said.

A grey Honda CRV vehicle, which reports said had been sought in connection with the suspects, was found on Friday morning in the Boston area, Connecticut police said.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s father, Anzor Tsarnaev, said his son was a second year medical student in the US and was hoping to be a brain surgeon.

He also said that he believed the secret services had framed his sons.

“It was a terrorist attack carefully organized by secret services – I don’t know which ones. My son used to go to a mosque, so they once paid us a visit to ask why he is doing that.

“Yes, there was such an episode. So they put all the blame on him and shot him. That’s it.”

Ruslan Tsarni, an uncle of the suspects who lives in Maryland, said he was “ashamed” of their alleged involvement in the bombings.

“Yes of course we’re ashamed, they’re the children of my brother,” he said.

Asked what the bombers’ motives may have been, Ruslan Tsarni replied: “Being losers, hating everyone around them.”

Monday’s attack on the Boston Marathon killed Martin Richard, 8, Krystle Campbell, 29, and Lu Lingzi, 23, a postgraduate student from China.

Boston police have identified Tamerlan Tsarnaev as the “black hat” bombing suspect, killed during the manhunt that followed.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev became a legal permanent resident, according to NBC, in 2007.

He died overnight in the firefight with police, suffering from “blast and potentially gunshot wounds …probably a blast injury [and] possibly shrapnel” throughout his trunk.

His brother, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, aged 19, is surviving Boston bomber, named Suspect 2 by police, who was seen on CCTV wearing a white baseball cap.

Freelance photographer Johannes Hirn made Tamerlan Tsarnaev the subject of a photo essay, titled Will Box for Passport, taken before the boxer competed at National Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City. The captions give us a micro-profile of suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

“Tamerlan, who studies at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston and wants to become an engineer, took the semester off from school to train for the competition.

Tamerlan fled Chechnya with his family because of the conflict in the early 90s, and lived for years in Kazakhstan before getting to the United States as a refugee.

Originally from Chechnya, but living in the United States since five years, Tamerlan says: <<I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them.>>

If he wins enough fights… Tamerlan says he could be selected for the US Olympic team and be naturalized American. Unless his native Chechnya becomes independent, Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia.

Tamerlan says he doesn’t drink or smoke anymore: <<God said no alcohol.>> A Muslim, he says: <<There are no values anymore>>, and worries that <<people can’t control themselves>>.”

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was arrested for domestic assault and battery in 2009 after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, according to police records. A YouTube account linked with his Google Plus profile is focused on videos about Islam.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a competitive boxer for a club named Team Lowell, who won the Rocky Marciano Trophy for being New England Golden Gloves heavyweight champion in 2010. He did this while taking time off from school at Bunker Hill Community College, where he studied in hopes of being an engineer. He’s been boxing in the US since at least 2004, and his uncle told WBZ in Boston that he arrived in the United States in 2000 under refugee status.

The Lowell Sun wrote this about his bout at the Golden Gloves nationals in 2009: “In Team New England’s last bout of the night, Tamerlan Tsarnaev dropped a controversial decision to Lamar Fenner of Chicago in the 201-pound devision.

“After flooring Fenner with a huge punch that required an eight count, it seemed that Tsarnaev was in control of the whole fight.

“Yet somehow the judges saw it differently and awarded Fenner the decision, a decision that drew boos from the crowd.

“Team New England finished the first day of action with two wins and two losses.”

Johannes Hirn photo gallery features Tamerlan Tsarnaev’ss girlfriend at the time, and the caption reads:

“Tamerlan says his girlfriend is half Portuguese, half Italian girlfriend and converted to Islam: <<She’s beautiful, man!>>”

Other photo captions in the gallery:

“Tamerlan demonstrates a way of walking to strengthen the ankle muscles at the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center. A native of Chechnya, Tamerlan says: <<In Russia, we used to train like this. Here nobody does it, I don’t know why!>>.

“Tamerlan says he loves the movie “Borat,” even though some of the jokes are a bit too much.”

Fugitive ex-LAPD officer, Christopher Dorner, whose remains were found in a burnt-out cabin after a six-day manhunt, died from a single gunshot wound to the head, authorities say.

Police had launched the manhunt for Christopher Dorner after he killed three people, apparently in revenge for being fired from the LA police in 2008.

Christopher Dorner was cornered near Big Bear Lake and incendiary tear gas was fired in.

Police could not confirm whether the gunshot was self-inflicted.

After a six-hour post-mortem examination, San Bernardino County coroner Kevin Lacy said: “We are not yet able to speak about the manner of death and tell you whether or not it was the result of a self-inflicted wound or another round.

“While we are still assembling the reports and putting it together, the implication seems to be that the wound that took Christopher Dorner’s life was self-inflicted.”

Christopher Dorner had holed up in a flat in Big Bear Lake, a ski resort 80 miles east of Los Angeles, for six days after he killed a couple and a policeman.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told reporters that officers had knocked on the door of the condominium during the manhunt.

“Our deputy knocked on that door and did not get an answer, and in hindsight it’s probably a good thing that he did not answer based on his actions before and after that event,” he said.

When owners arrived to clean the building, Christopher Dorner tied them up and fled in their car, killing a sheriff’s deputy in a shootout and then barricading himself in the remote cabin.

A Swat team fired incendiary tear gas to try to force Christopher Dorner out.

A blaze started and a single gunshot was heard.

Police found a cache of weapons in the cabin, including assault rifles.

Christopher Dorner started his killing spree on February 3 when he shot dead the daughter of a former police captain and her fiancé.

The woman’s father, Randal Quan, had represented Christopher Dorner at a police disciplinary board.

Christopher Dorner was fired in 2008 from the force on a charge of making false statements, after he lodged a complaint against his field training officer, saying she had kicked a suspect during an arrest.

In an online manifesto, Christopher Dorner, who was black, suggested that racism was still rife in the LAPD.

Los Angeles authorities have offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest of fugitive ex-policeman Christopher Dorner suspected of three murders.

Christopher Dorner, 33, has been on the run for the past week, following the attacks in southern California.

Announcing the reward, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said his “reign of terror” must end.

In an online manifesto, Christopher Dorner swore to take revenge on police officers he blamed for his firing in 2008.

“We will not tolerate anyone undermining the security, the tranquility of our neighborhoods,” Antonio Villaraigosa said at a news conference announcing the reward on Sunday.

“We will not tolerate this reign of terror that has robbed us of the peace of mind that residents of southern California deserve,” he added.

Christopher Dorner, a former officer of the LAPD, is suspected of killing three people, including the daughter of a retired captain who represented him in a disciplinary procedure.

Police are now protecting 50 families, many belonging to former LAPD colleagues, against whom Christopher Dorner has vowed revenge for ruining his career.

In his online manifesto, Christopher Dorner suggested that some were motivated by racism.

Police are combing an area near Big Bear Lake, 80 miles east of Los Angeles, after finding the suspect’s burned-out truck near a ski area.

LAPD have launched a huge manhunt for Christopher Dorner, a sacked officer who is suspected of killing three people, including a former colleague.

Christopher Dorner, 33, is alleged to have gunned down a policeman and wounded two others on Thursday morning.

He is also wanted over the shooting deaths of a couple at the weekend.

Police are going door-to-door after finding the suspect’s burned-out truck near a ski area at Big Bear Lake, 80 miles east of Los Angeles.

Fire officials in Big Bear Lake told the Los Angeles Times that fresh tracks spotted in the snow were believed to be Christopher Dorner’s but that it was possible the truck was a diversion.

Nearby schools and other buildings were placed on a security lockdown as a precaution.

Christopher Dorner is said to have implicated himself in a 14-page “manifesto” that made threats against several people, including Los Angeles police employees.

A former US Navy reservist, he was with the police department between 2005 and 2008, but lost his job for making false statements.

Christopher Dorner is suspected of:

  • Shooting dead Monica Quan, 28 – the daughter of a former LAPD captain – and her fiancé Keith Lawrence, 27, on Sunday night in their car at their home in Irvine, California
  • Shooting at two police officers, grazing one, on Thursday morning in Corona, east of Los Angeles
  • Ambushing two policemen in their patrol car in the town of Riverside a few hours later, killing one and wounding the other

Monica Quan’s father represented Christopher Dorner before a disciplinary tribunal that ruled against the suspect at the time of his dismissal.

According to court documents, Christopher Dorner was fired in 2008 after making a complaint against his field training officer, saying she had kicked a suspect, a schizophrenic man with severe dementia, during an arrest.

Officials have assigned more than 40 protection details to potential targets of the fugitive, and electronic signs that usually list expected commute times urged motorists to call police if they saw Christopher Dorner or his vehicle.

Los Angeles chief of police Charlie Beck told reporters: “Of course he knows what he’s doing – we trained him. It is extremely worrisome and scary, especially to the police officers involved.”

Charlie Beck said that Christopher Dorner has access to multiple weapons, including an assault rifle.

On Thursday morning, jittery Los Angeles police mistakenly fired on a vehicle they thought was similar to one used by Christopher Dorner.

Two women were injured. One was in a stable condition with two gunshot wounds and the other had a minor gunshot wound.

Nevada police are also on alert, as the suspect owns a house 9 miles from the Las Vegas Strip.

Police said earlier that an LAPD badge and identification belonging to Christopher Dorner had been found by a citizen near San Diego’s airport.

San Diego police said a man matching the suspect’s description had tried to steal a boat from one of the city’s marinas on Wednesday night.

When the boat would not start, that person tied up an 81-year-old man on board and fled.

He was last known to be living in La Palma, California.

Christopher Dorner’s rambling “manifesto” extends for more than 11,000 words and contains a number of allegations against former colleagues, together with embittered reflections on his childhood.

The essay warns of “unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty”.

He also says “unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name”.

The profanity-peppered rant ends with praise for a range of public figures and celebrities, from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to the actor Bill Cosby.

Authorities in Tulsa, Oklahoma, have launched a manhunt after a series of shootings which police say may have been hate crimes.

Five attacks took place within hours of each other on Friday, killing three and critically wounding two others, within a three-mile (5 km) radius.

All the victims were black and police say there are searching for a white male in connection to the attacks.

Community leaders have tried to calm fears of further attacks.

The police said they were searching for a white man driving a white pick-up truck, who was seen in the area of three of the shootings.

The crimes have shocked people living in a relatively quiet part of north Tulsa, and that there is a fear that the killer may strike again.

Detectives are hoping for people to help them, but that many in the community do not trust the police.

Tulsa police chief Chuck Jordan said they were investigating whether the attacks were hate crimes, after investigators earlier said the incidents were linked.

The FBI has joined a task force set up to investigate the killings, he said.

Jack Henderson, a city councilor for the district where the attacks occurred, urged people to come forward with information.

“This is Tulsa, Oklahoma. We should have the ability to stand out on your porch anytime, day or night, that you want to, to walk down the street, day or night.

“And the only way that this person is going to be brought to justice is we need some leads.”

A 49-year-old was the first killed at about 01:00 a.m. local time on Friday.

Minutes later the gunman approached two other men and asked for directions before shooting them. They survived but later two more were shot dead nearby.

“We’re all nervous,” said one resident, 52-year-old Renaldo Works.

“I’ve got a 15-year-old, and I’m not going to let him out late. People are scared. We need facts.”

“You don’t want to be a prisoner in your own home,” he said.

A manhunt is under way for an Iraq war veteran wanted in connection with the murder of a female ranger at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state.

Mount Rainier National Park was closed after ranger Margaret Anderson, 34, was shot dead after she set up a roadblock to try and stop the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect, named locally as Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, is also wanted in connection with an earlier shooting.

Benjamin Colton Barnes is reported to be an Iraq war veteran with survivalist skills.

Police said they had recovered his vehicle, which had weapons and body armour inside.

The shooting happened as hikers and climbers flocked to enjoy the park’s wooded trails and spectacular views of the 14,410 ft (4,392m) Mount Rainier on an unseasonably mild New Year’s holiday.

The park was immediately closed after the shooting, and around 85 visitors and 15 park staff were moved into a visitors’ centre to wait for police to give them the all-clear to leave.

Police said Benjamin Colton Barnes was wanted for questioning over an early-morning shooting at a New Year’s party in Skyway, just south of Seattle, which left four people injured.

The King County Sheriff’s Office quoted witnesses as saying multiple people at the party were armed and a shoot-out had erupted following an argument over a weapon.

Margaret Anderson and a fellow ranger set up a roadblock after the suspect failed to stop at a tyre-assessment checkpoint at around 10:20 local time on Sunday, a spokesman for the national park said.

Both rangers were fired on, but only Margaret Anderson – a mother of two young daughters and married to another of the park’s rangers – was hit.

“It’s just a huge tragedy – for the family, the park and the park service,” park superintendent Randy King said.

The park will remain closed on Monday while the search continues through its 368 sq miles of terrain.
