David Petraeus was betrayed by his own bodyguards, claims new book Benghazi: The Definitive Report

0

Former CIA Director David Petraeus was betrayed by his own bodyguards and vengeful high-ranking enemies in the CIA, who made sure his affair with Paula Broadwell was exposed to the public, a new book claims.

It comes from two retired special operations commandos – a Navy SEAL and a Green Beret – who say they discovered a plot against David Petraeus while doing research about the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Senior CIA officers targeted David Petraeus because they didn’t like the way he was running the agency – focusing more on paramilitary operations than intelligence analysis. They used their political clout and their connections to force an FBI investigation of his affair with Paula Broadwell and make it public, according to Benghazi: The Definitive Report.

Jack Murphy and co-author Brandon Webb also revealed that the September 11 Benghazi terrorist attack that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, was retaliation by Islamist militants who had been targeted by covert U.S. military operations.

The book claims that neither Chris Stevens nor even David Petraeus knew about the raids by American special operations troops, which had “kicked a hornet’s nest” among the heavily-armed fighters after the overthrow of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

John Brennan, President Barack Obama’s Deputy National Security Adviser, had been authorizing “unilateral operations in North Africa outside of the traditional command structure”, according to the e-book.

John Brennan is Barack Obama’s pick to replace David Petraeus as head of the CIA.

Benghazi: The Definitive Report, published by William Morrow and Company, is due out in e-book on Tuesday. The authors, Brandon Webb and Jack Murphy, are editors of SOFREP.com, a site devoted to news and stories written by current and former special operations commandos.

Perhaps the most startling accusation in the book is that David Petraeus’ affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell was leaked by the
members of his personal protection detail.

The authors say that senior intelligence officers working on the 7th floor of CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, used their political clout to ensure that the FBI investigated the former Army general’s personal life.

They then told David Petraeus that they would publicly humiliate him if he didn’t admit the affair and resign.

“It was well known to Petraeus’s Personal Security Detachment [bodyguards] that he and Broadwell were having an affair. He wasn’t the only high-ranking Agency head or general engaged in extramarital relations, but when the 7th floor wanted Petraeus out, they cashed in their chips,” Brandon Webb and Jack Murphy write.

The book continues: “The reality of the situation is that high-ranking CIA officers had already discovered the affair by consulting with Petraeus’s PSD and then found a way to initiate an FBI investigation in order to create a string of evidence and an investigative trail that led to the information they already had – in other words, an official investigation that could be used to force Petraeus to resign.”

Brandon Webb and Jack Murphy said the CIA bureaucracy wanted David Petraeus out of the CIA. Senior officials were furious over the way he had been running the agency since he was appointed in September 2011.

David Petraeus was betrayed by his own bodyguards, who made sure his affair with Paula Broadwell was exposed to the public, claims the book

David Petraeus was turning the agency’s focus from intelligence gathering and analysis to paramilitary operations, including drone strikes.

Additionally, he ran the CIA like a four-star general, instead of treating it like a political institution, the authors say. His management style made countless powerful enemies within the CIA.

On November 9, three days after Barack Obama’s reelection, David Petraeus shocked the USA by resigning as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and admitting that he had been sleeping with Paula Broadwell – whom he had met while she was researching her biography of him, All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.

Before he was publicly castigated, David Petraeus was the most high-profile and highly-respected commander in the military. His counter-insurgency strategy was credited with turning the tide in the Iraq War and securing the country so U.S. troops could withdraw. He also commanded a surge of American forces in Afghanistan.

David Petraeus, 60, earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University and was hailed as a “warrior scholar”. Before his resignation, he was mentioned as a possible vice presidential nominee for Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

His public image is in shambles after the affair went public.

Media reports indicate that the FBI began investigating David Petraeus’ affair with Paula Broadwell after Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, a friend of Petraeus and his wife Holly, reported that she had received threatening emails from the mistress warning her to stay away from the CIA director.

The authors say that Jill Kelley’s report may have started in the FBI investigation – but CIA officers pressured the Justice Department to keep the inquiry open.

Brandon Webb said his sources in the FBI told him federal agents wanted to close down their investigation when they learned that nothing illegal had happened, but they were told to keep digging. The FBI investigators, Brandon Webb says, never wanted to out David Petraeus’ affair.

Jack Murphy said he learned of the “palace coup” from current and former members of the CIA.

The authors claim that David Petraeus was already on his way out when the scandal broke. They learned weeks before that he was interviewing for teaching jobs at Princeton University.

David Petraeus was furious, they say, because he was kept in the dark about the raids being conducted without his knowledge by the Pentagon’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) across Libya and North Africa.

Brandon Webb and Jack Murphy claim that the September 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate and a CIA outpost in Benghazi proved to David Petraeus that he was an outsider in the Obama administration and that he would remain marginalized as long as he was at the CIA.

The central premise of Benghazi: The Definitive Report is that the attacks were precipitated by secret raids
JSOC had performed in Libya. An attack on the Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia days before September 11 may have been the final straw.

Heavily-armed militants with Ansar al-Sharia attacked the consulate on September 11 as retaliation, the book claims. Ambassador Chris Stevens and Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith died of smoke inhalation when insurgents set fire to the consulate.

After the raid, the militants launched a second attack against a CIA annex across town. It was there that CIA security contractors Ty Woods and Glen Doherty – both former U.S. Navy SEALs – were killed when their position took a direct hit from an enemy mortar.

Brandon Webb and Jack Murphy said they wrote the book to reveal “the truth” behind the attack. They say news accounts of the incident have often been inaccurate because journalists have not had inside access to the people who were on the ground at the time.

The authors have been frustrated, they say, by politicians who have attempted to twist the facts of the case to suit their own ends. Conservatives sought to use the attack as an election issue and place the blame on Barack Obama.

Democrats and the Obama administration have worked to deflect responsibility and downplay the warning signs that were present before the consulate was raided.

Brandon Webb and Jack Murphy claim that the “inside” story of the attack – as told by their connections in the CIA and special operations units of the military – show that Brennan never warned the CIA or Chris Stevens about ongoing U.S. military operations in the country.

State Department and the intelligence community known about what was happening, they would have stepped up security in Benghazi and could have prevented the tragedy.

Both authors are well-positioned to access classified insider information about the attack. They run SOFREP.com, a news site written and edited by current and former members of the special operations community.

Brandon Webb served as a Navy SEAL for ten years and deployed overseas five times. He left the Navy in 2006. Jack Murphy served eight years in the U.S. Army, including as an Army Ranger and a Special Forces Green Beret. He deployed overseas three times before retiring in 2010. He is currently studying political science at Columbia University.

LAPD make offer to fugitive Christopher Dorner

0

LAPD have said they will re-examine the sacking of fugitive former officer Christopher Dorner, suspected of killing three people.

Christopher Dorner, 33, has been on the run for the past week, following the attacks in southern California.

In an online manifesto, Christopher Dorner swore to take revenge on police officers he blamed for his firing in 2008, which he claimed was racially motivated.

Police Chief Charlie Beck appealed for Christopher Dorner to hand himself in.

He said re-opening the investigation was not a response to his demands.

“I do this not to appease a murderer. I do it to reassure the public that their police department is transparent and fair in all the things we do,” Charlie Beck said in a statement.

Christopher Dorner is suspected of killing three people, including the daughter of a retired police captain who represented him in a disciplinary procedure.

Charlie Beck said police were now protecting 50 families, many belonging to former LAPD colleagues, against whom Christopher Dorner has vowed revenge for ruining his career.

In an online manifesto, Christopher Dorner suggested that some were motivated by racism, writing: “Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name.”

Police are combing an area near Big Bear Lake, 80 miles east of Los Angeles, after finding the suspect’s burned-out truck near a ski area.

Fire officials in Big Bear Lake told the Los Angeles Times that fresh tracks spotted in the snow were believed to be Christopher Dorner’s but that it was possible the truck was a diversion.

A former US Navy reservist, Christopher Dorner was with the police department between 2005 and 2008, but lost his job for making false statements.

Christopher Dorner is suspected of:

  • Shooting dead Monica Quan, 28 – the daughter of a former LAPD captain – and her fiance Keith Lawrence, 27, on Sunday night in their car at their home in Irvine, California
  • Shooting at two police officers, grazing one, on Thursday morning in Corona, east of Los Angeles
  • Ambushing two policemen in their patrol car in the town of Riverside a few hours later, killing one and wounding the other

According to court documents, Christopher Dorner was fired in 2008 after making a complaint against his field training officer, saying she had kicked a suspect, a schizophrenic man with severe dementia, during an arrest.

Rio Carnival 2013 draws more than 1.5 million revellers

As Brazil’s annual carnival gets under way, Rio de Janeiro’s oldest street parade has drawn an estimated 1.5 million revellers.

The samba-dancing crowd filled the streets of Rio’s business district and some passed out under the summer heat.

Police arrested more than 100 partygoers for minor crimes, but the majority of celebrations were peaceful, officials say.

About 700 other street parties and the world-renowned samba schools’ parade will take place in Rio until Tuesday.

The Cordao do Bola Preta 95th annual street parade kicked off at 10:00 on Saturday.

Thousands, many wearing costumes, danced as live bands on lorries played tunes of traditional carnival songs and samba school themes.

The crowds converged in the early afternoon, and many revellers climbed onto parked police cars, as the massive street party drew to a close.

One of the cars had its windscreen smashed in and more than 100 were detained by the police, mostly for urinating on the streets, the authorities said.

Hundreds of other street parties are happening in Rio, many simultaneously in different parts of the city.

The samba schools competition, with its sophisticated floats and costumes, is set to happen in Rio’s Sambadrome between Sunday and Monday.

The carnival is set to draw 1.1m tourists to Rio, generating some $650 million for the local economy. Hotels and restaurants are booked almost to capacity.

Will Smith, rapper Kanye West and Megan Fox are already in the city for the celebrations.

Brazil’s annual carnival kicked off on Friday, but the parades and street parties had a sombre tinge, coming after a nightclub fire that killed 238 people.

Mourning rituals continued as the mayor of Rio de Janeiro handed over the keys of the city to carnival ceremonial figurehead King Momo.

President Dilma Rousseff attended a memorial Mass for the fire victims at Brasilia’s cathedral on Thursday night.

She is not taking part in the five-day party, spending it in Bahia state.

For Brazil, Rio Carnival 2013 is an important test of the city’s infrastructure ahead of the big sporting events lined up for the future, including the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

Maha Kumbh Mela 2013: 30 million pilgrims expected to take a dip on the most auspicious day

More than 30 million pilgrims are expected to take a dip at the confluence of Ganges and Yamuna rivers as the main day of bathing has begun at India’s Kumbh Mela.

This is the most auspicious of six bathing days at the event, billed as the biggest human gathering on Earth.

More than eight million took to the waters on the opening day, January 14.

Hindus believe a festival dip at Sangam – where the rivers meet – will cleanse sins and help bring salvation.

In all, up to 100 million pilgrims are expected to bathe in the holy waters in January and February at the 55-day Kumbh Mela, which is held every 12 years.

This occasion is also a Maha Kumbh Mela, which comes round only once every 144 years.

Early in the morning on Sunday, holy men – and some women – belonging to various Hindu monastic orders arrived to bathe.

Carrying pennants, bow and arrow and banners, many danced and beat drums. Some arrived on gaudily decorated chariots. Others arrived on horses. Most were dressed in saffron.

The sadhus, mostly naked, dreadlocked and smeared in ash, ran to the river amid heavy security.

There are also thousands of poor families living under the open skies in cold weather here at the sprawling festival grounds in the northern city of Allahabad.

One young devotee, Ashutosh Pandey, a pharmacy student, said the holy dip was a form of prayer for him.

“When I bathe I am praying to God for the good of my country and the world,” he said.

More than 14,000 policemen, along with paramilitary forces and commandos, have been deployed to ensure security on Sunday.

Police officers, many of them on horseback, are having a hard time controlling the crowds, as many of the bathers linger to gaze at the colorful processions of the holy men.

The festival’s police chief, RKS Rathore, said the turnout for Sunday would be “unprecedented”.

He said some 12 million people had arrived at the festival grounds on Saturday alone.

The bathing on Sunday – the most auspicious day according to Hindu tradition – is taking place at 18 main locations along the river bank.

Rajkumar Singh, a government worker from the state of Punjab, said: “I have travelled for three days by bus, train and foot to reach the festival.

“I believe a bathe on the most auspicious day will get rid of all my sins and will help secure me and my family’s future.”

Officials at the Mela said that some 12 million people had already taken a holy dip at the festival since its opening on January 14.

The 14 hospitals at the Mela grounds have already treated more than 150,000 pilgrims since the opening. Two pilgrims have died.

Most of those treated suffered from respiratory problems, cold, joint pains and dust allergy, Dr Kalim Aqmal, at the main hospital, said.

A “lost-and-found” centre has reunited 40,000 people since the opening of the festival, officials said.

The Kumbh Mela has its origins in Hindu mythology.

Many believe that when gods and demons fought over a pitcher of nectar, a few drops fell in the cities of Allahabad, Nasik, Ujjain and Haridwar – the four places where the Kumbh festival has been held for centuries.

What is a Maha Kumbh Mela?

The Kumbh Mela is a mass pilgrimage in which Hindus gather in locations along the holy rivers Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical river Saraswati.

There are three different kinds of kumbh: an ardh (or half) kumbh is held every six years at two set locations; a purna (full) kumbh is held every 12 years at four set locations.

The 2013 gathering is a Maha Kumbh and that only happens after 12 purna kumbhs, every 144 years, and always at Allahabad. Astrology determines most aspects of the festival, including its exact date and length.

Curiosity rover picks up historic drill sample on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars has finally drilled deep enough into a rock to acquire a powdered sample for analysis.

The fine grey tailings from the 6cm-hole will be sieved and inspected before being delivered to the robot’s onboard labs in the coming days.

It will represent a historic first in planetary exploration – never before has the interior of a rock on another world been probed in such a way.

The US space agency said the drilling was an immense achievement.

“This is the biggest milestone accomplishment for the Curiosity team since the sky-crane landing last August, another proud day for America,” said Prof. John Grotizinger, the mission’s chief scientist.

Drilling is absolutely central to the rover’s mission in Gale Crater, a deep bowl sited on Mars’ equator.

Curiosity is investigating whether past environments at this location could ever have supported life, and getting inside rocks to analyze their make-up will provide some of the most telling evidence.

Engineers have waited a full six months before deploying the drill tool, which is held on the end of the rover’s 2.2 m-long robotic arm.

Its first action was just to hammer down briefly on a rock target last weekend – a simple check to prove the machinery was behaving as it should.

This was followed in the week by the drill turning in the chosen rock to cut a shallow, 2cm hole.

It produced a fine powder that engineers deemed suitable to try to pick up. So, the command was given to drill a second hole that was deep enough to push some tailings into the tool’s sample acquisition chamber.

Some of this material will be used to scrub the machinery’s innards of any contamination that may have travelled with the rover from Earth.

The rest will be sorted to a size and volume that can be put inside Curiosity’s Chemin and Sam labs.

These instruments will determine the rock sample’s precise chemistry and mineralogy, and identify any interesting carbon chemistry that may be present.

Chemin will likely set to work on the powder first. This is because its findings can influence the settings run the Sam experiments..

“We may alter our temperatures depending on what they see in Chemin,” said Paul Mahaffy, the principal investigator on Sam.

The flat slabs of rock currently being investigated by the rover have been dubbed “John Klein”, the name of a Curiosity engineer who died in 2011. They lie in a small depression referred to as Yellowknife Bay, about half a kilometre from the robot’s point of touchdown last year.

The rocks contain very fine-grained sediments but are cut through with pale veins of what could be calcium sulphate.

Curiosity has already seen plenty of evidence for past running water in Gale Crater and the results from the drill-hole analysis are expected to reveal further information about that wet history.

Triumph celebrates 127 years of lingerie with pop up event at Covent Garden

Triumph celebrates 127 years of lingerie and proves they still remain at the forefront of fashion after being named as the official supplier of underwear at London Fashion Week.

To celebrate their second collaboration with the British Fashion Council, Triumph has teamed up with designers including Matthew Williamson and Fyodor Golan who have created their own unique customizations of their underwear.

The designers’ styles will be on display at a special pop up event, Maison Triumph, in Covent Garden, London next week.

The pop up centre will also house an exhibition revealing Triumph’s styles across the decades since they were established in 1886 by merchant Michael Braun and corset-maker Johann Gottfried Spiesshofer.
From humble beginnings with just six sewing machines and six employees at their factory in southern Germany, they have gone on to become the world’s leading lingerie manufacturers with a presence in more than 120 countries and 37,500-plus employees.
In the beginning, Triumph production focused on corsets that emphasized the bust and derriere while tautly shaping the waist and hips in line with what was considered the perfect female shape during the Victorian era.

The company faced a challenge to their business in the 1920s when the corset began to fall out of favor as female fashion began to change radically and boyish shapes and the bra became more popular.

Triumph moved with the times and began developing new ranges of underwear including bras with front fastenings and adjustable straps.

Further developments in line with style tastes, their own innovations and incorporating new fabrics like Lycra, continued through the swinging sixties to the present day – with their signature corsets continually coming in and out of fashion again.

Visitors to the pop event can see this style evolution played out in the exhibition that includes some of the images you can view here.

There will also be a number of other special events at the pop up store including a question and answer sessions with industry experts including model-turned-designer Helena Christensen, who will unveil a sneak peek of her autumn/winter collection for Triumph.

Michelle Phan kitty litter facial mask shrinks pores, prevents acne and leaves skin soft

Self-taught beauty expert Michelle Phan claims pasting kitty litter on your face will shrink pores, prevent acne and leave skin feeling “extremely soft”.

Michelle Phan, 25, from Boston, Massachusetts, who produces online make-up tutorials for a number of big brands including Lancome, reveals that kitty litter are made from bentonite clay – the main ingredient in most purifying facial masks and body wraps.

In a homemade video – which has attracted over 745,00 hits as of today – Michelle Phan sets to work using a $2 bag of cat litter and warns viewers to opt for the unscented variety “because scented versions might have harmful chemicals that can irritate the skin”.

“Open your brand new bag of kitty litter,” Michelle Phan chimes while scooping out two tablespoons of granulated clay into a small mixing bowl.

She notes that a bag of litter will probably last over a year if used for cosmetic purposes only.

After adding a splash of water Michelle Phan squirts in some Aloe Vera, and gives the muddy-looking concoction a stir.

After all of the ingredients are combined she places the mask into the microwave to cook for 20 seconds.

“You just want your mask to be warm not hot, this will help dilate the pores,” Michelle Phan explains.

Once baked the “flat and muddy” clay is ready for application. Instead of the pellets Michelle Phan only applies the murky water to her skin.

“Try not to directly apply the clay rocks onto your face, you just really need the water.

“The water contains enough of the clay particles for this to work. The clay rocks are way too rough for your delicate skin.”

Michelle Phan also warns to avoid the eye area and only use thin coasts because “less is always more”.

Once she’s finished applying the kitty litter mask she waits 15 minutes for it to dry and even has time to give her pet cat some affection in front of the camera.

“At this time you should start feeling a minty tingling sensation on your skin,” Michelle Phan says at the five minute point.

Once time is up Michelle Phan uses warm water to wash the white paste off before moisturizing.

She concludes: “It’s going to feel really refreshing… your skin should feel extremely soft. It just comes to show you the best stuff comes from the most unexpected things.”

Several other websites also recommend the bizarre treatment. The Vegan Beauty Review states that it’s “one of the best face masks you will ever try!”.

Rodial Bee Venom halts damaging effects of menopause on your skin

0

Rodial has launched a new skincare line called Bee Venom, which is clinically proved to halt the damaging effects of the menopause on the face.

Experts say that as well as mood swings, sleeplessness and weight-gain, women going through the menopause also suffer a variety of skin problems.

Deep wrinkles, puffiness and dryness are just some of the symptoms brought on by hormone changes at this time of life.

During the menopause, levels of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone drop rapidly leading to accelerated skin ageing.

Levels of collagen and elastin also go down, leading to saggy skin and deep wrinkles and production of skin-hydrating acids and oils also significantly drop, causing dryness and a “crepe” appearance to the skin.

In trials involving 14 women aged between 50 and 59, all the volunteers said the bee venom cream improved the texture of their skin, reduced lines and wrinkles and left them appearing “visibly more youthful”.

Honey bee venom is used cosmetically to “fool” the skin into thinking it has been lightly stung with the toxin melittin.

This causes the body to direct blood towards the area and stimulates the production of the naturally-occurring chemicals collagen and elastin.

Collagen strengthens body tissue while elastin is the protein that helps the skin to remain taut and bounce back into shape after being pressed or pinched.

Rodial has launched a new skincare line called Bee Venom, which is clinically proved to halt the damaging effects of the menopause on the face

The venom also has the effect of relaxing the muscles, it is claimed.

Experts collect bee venom by placing a pane of glass alongside a hive and running a weak electrical current through it, which encourages the insects to sting the surface.

Because the bee’s lance remains in its body, it does not die.

Tiny quantities of the venom are then collected. It is so valuable that it costs up to $50,000 for one ounce.

A spokesman for Rodial said: “Bee Venom moisturizer is an advanced formula that revitalizes and renews, giving naturally younger looking skin.

“It works in synergy with a unique complex of plant stem cells to help visibly improve skin tone and elasticity.

“Other ingredients refine the skin’s surface to help plump and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and provide intensive moisturization and long-lasting hydration for a radiant complexion.”

Bees are already responsible for other supposedly anti-ageing products from honey to royal jelly, a health supplement used by celebrities such as Cliff Richard, Lulu and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Knights of Malta military order of the Catholic Church celebrates 900th anniversary

The Knights of Malta military order of the Catholic Church – which dates back to the time of the Crusades – is celebrating its 900th birthday in Rome.

The order is one of the few created in the Middle Ages that is still active.

It has now become a major international humanitarian organization.

The order says that its battles today are no longer fought with swords, but with “peaceful tools against disease, poverty, social isolation as well as protecting the faith”.

The Knights of Malta military order was officially recognized by Pope Paschal II in February 1113.

More than 1,000 knights and dames from dozens of countries – all dressed in flowing black robes bearing their order’s distinctive eight-pointed cross on their shoulders – will walk in procession into St. Peter’s Basilica.

They will attend mass and hear words of congratulations and blessings from Pope Benedict XVI for their charitable work among the sick and the poor all over the world.

The current Grand Master of the Order, Matthew Festing, is elected for life and comes from Britain. He bears the title of prince, and ranks as a cardinal of the Catholic Church, having sworn oaths of poverty, chastity and obedience.

“We have 13,500 members, with about 4,500 people here [in Rome] over the weekend, so it’s a very big gathering.

“It’s interesting that a small band of Crusaders has expanded into this huge worldwide organization.

“The reason we’ve survived is because we have changed from knights in armor to what we are now in the 21st century. We are still doing what we did then, looking after the sick,” said Matthew Festing.

The order was originally founded by a group of aristocratic European Crusaders who looked after sick pilgrims in Jerusalem in the 12th Century, when they received official papal recognition.

Centuries later, they were chased from their headquarters in Malta by Napoleon and now have their headquarters in an ancient palace in the smartest and most fashionable shopping area of central Rome.

Today they run hospitals and humanitarian operations in more than 120 countries.

The order is eager to shed its image as a club for wealthy European aristocrats and is now searching for new talent to continue its worldwide mission.

The Knights of Malta:

  • Believed to have been formed around 1048
  • Also known as Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem
  • Founder was called Blessed Gerard
  • All members are expected to conduct their lives in an “exemplary manner”
  • They must live in conformity with the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • They must also devote themselves to humanitarian assistance

Taylan K is not suspect of Sarai Sierra murder

Taylan K, the Turkish man accused earlier yesterday of having a secret affair with Sarai Sierra, the New York mother who was bludgeoned to death during a solo trip to Istanbul last week, has denied the claims, insisting they were just friends who met up for a cup of tea.

Sarai Sierra, 33, from Staten Island, was said to have met a man named as “Taylan K” on Instagram a few months ago before her trip to Turkey and then met up with him several times while she was there.

Various Turkish media reports claimed they had sex in a bar restroom the night before Sarai Sierra was murdered but that was the last time he had seen her.

Police said he was not a suspect.

Taylan K’s lawyer Ozkan Polat said Friday that his client denies the claims, calling them “wholly untrue”.

Ozkan Polat insists the pair had “no emotional relationship” and had met for a cup of tea as friends, adding that his client comes from a “good family and completed a master’s program abroad…He’s very demoralized”.

The claims come one day after the body of Sarai Sierra arrived at her home in Staten Island. Her devastated husband Steven Sierra and two children, aged 9 and 11, are preparing for her wake and funeral on February 15.

It was also revealed on Friday that two Iranian women are among the 46 people being held over the murder.

Turkish police took DNA samples from 22 people – none of which matched the crime scene – and are questioning a number of others.

They said there is a possibility Sarai Sierra fought against her attacker and left traces of the killer on her skin or under her fingernails.

As well as being bludgeoned over the head, Sarai Sierra had extensive trauma to her torso, her right hip area and bruises on her arms, suggesting a struggle.

Istanbul authorities say the area where Sarai Sierra was murdered is a known rape black spot in a run down part of the city.

A Swedish tourist was raped at knife point in the same place in January 2007, and in March 2010 a Japanese girl suffered a chillingly similar attack to Sarai Sierra’s murder when she was bludgeoned about the head with a rock and raped, according to Turkish daily newspaper Takvim.

Another 24-year-old Turkish girl was attacked at knife point at the same spot but managed to fight off her attacker and flee to safety.

Since those attacks, Turkish police have installed extra lighting and CCTV in the area in a clearly-failed attempt to make it safer.

Taylan K has denied wrongdoing and said he met Sarai Sierra on January 10 for the first time in Istanbul but he did not see her again until January 20 when she wrote to him: “I want to see you.”

The next day Taylan K missed two messages from her in the morning and when he tried to call, her phone was off.

Ozkan Polat told the New York Daily News that his client and Sarai Sierra made plans to meet again – near the Galata Bridge in Istanbul before her death. But she never showed up.

State Prosecutor Huseyin Kaplan said Taylan K is not being considered as a suspect and authorities aren’t concerned about their alleged affair.

“We’re not interested in whether she had a sexual relationship,” Huseyin Kaplan told the Daily News.

“What’s important for us is who killed her.”

It was also reported that police are questioning a drug dealer and hostel owner in the area where Sarai Sierra’s body was found after checking her phone and Gmail records.

Meanwhile, Sarai Sierra’s family are preparing for her funeral under the intense scrutiny of the media.

The family will gather on February 15 at Christian Pentecostal Church, where Sarai and Steven had met, for Sarai Sierra’s funeral.

Sarai Sierra’s wake will take place on Valentine’s Day – which would have been the couple’s 15th wedding anniversary.

Caffrey: Persian cat survives on two legs on the same side

When black Persian Caffrey was three, he was run over by a car and lost his left hind leg.

The cat happily carried on with three, thanks to a $5,000 series of operations that stitched up the damage and made the best of his front left paw, which was also injured in the crash

For the next ten years or so, Caffrey coped so well it was easy to forget his disability. But four months ago he developed a malignant growth on the repaired front leg.

Caffrey’s owner Sue Greaves, 58, from UK, couldn’t bear to have him put down or put him through the pain of chemotherapy with no guarantee of success.

When her vet sought opinions from four colleagues, all said it shouldn’t be done. They insisted he would be unable to walk and his life would not be worth living.

Although he was expected to spend weeks recovering at home in Woking, Surrey, within days Caffrey had achieved near perfect balance – helped by next door neighbor Ashleigh Tyler, 8, who joined the campaign to nurse him back to health.

And less than two months after the $6,000 operation, Caffrey is skipping along like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Pablo Neruda exhumation ordered in Chile

A Chilean court has ordered the exhumation of the remains of poet Pablo Neruda, as part of an inquest into his death in 1973.

Pablo Neruda, a left-wing Nobel Prize winner, died 12 days after a military coup replaced the socialist president Salvador Allende with General Augusto Pinochet.

The poet’s family has always maintained that he died in a Santiago clinic of advanced prostate cancer, aged 69.

Chile started investigating allegations that he may have been poisoned in 2011.

The date of the exhumation has not been fixed yet.

Pablo Neruda’s body is buried next to his wife Matilde Urrutia in Isla Negra, 70 miles west of the capital Santiago.

Pablo Neruda was a Communist and a friend of President Salvador Allende.

But the foundation that guards his legacy says it believes Pablo Neruda died of cancer.

In a statement, it said it had been informed by the authorities of the exhumation plans a few days ago.

It also stated that it expected the operation would be executed “with the greatest possible respect and care” and that it would end “any doubts that might exist”.

The current investigation was brought about after Pablo Neruda’s former driver, Manuel Araya Osorio, said that agents injected the poet with poison at the clinic on the orders of General Augusto Pinochet.

Pablo Neruda was a fierce critic of the military coup, which he saw as a betrayal of his country.

His death is not the only one from that time to be re-examined.

In December 2011, after the remains of President Salvador Allende were exhumed, it was confirmed that he committed suicide, and was not killed by soldiers who stormed the presidential palace during the coup, as some had argued.

Venezuela devalues bolivar by 32% against US dollar

Venezuela has cut the value of its currency against the US dollar by 32%, in an effort to boost the country’s economy.

The widely expected measure ramps up the official exchange rate of the bolivar from 4.3 to 6.3 per US dollar.

The move was announced after Vice-President Nicolas Maduro’s return from Cuba, where he said President Hugo Chavez gave him instructions on the economy.

Hugo Chavez has not been seen or heard in public since December 2012, when he went to Havana for cancer treatment.

This is the fifth devaluation of the bolivar since Hugo Chavez’ administration started controlling the exchange rate, in 2003.

The previous devaluation was in 2010.

Experts have long considered the bolivar overvalued and the move came as no surprise in the oil-based economy.

As oil exports are calculated in US dollars, a weaker bolivar should mean more cash for the government.

Strict controls to prevent currency going out of the country mean that dollars are normally hard to get in Venezuela, but in recent times this situation had become acute.

Dollars have been trading at four times the official rate on the black market.

In a country that largely depends on food imports, the scarcity of dollars also led to shortages of products such as sugar and flour.

The new exchange rate is expected to address this situation.

But the measure is also expected to have an impact on the inflation, which has already been climbing.

The leader of the opposition, Henrique Caprilles, criticized on Twitter the fact that the government announced the devaluation on Carnival Friday in South America.

The opposition says the government has waited until after the elections to take the necessary steps in the economy.

“They’ve spent the money on the campaign, corruption and presents overseas,” wrote Henrique Caprilles, who lost the presidential elections to Hugo Chavez last year.

Hugo Chavez went to Cuba on December 8 to treat an undisclosed cancer and has not been seen or heard from since.

VP Nicolas Maduro recently said the president was “battling on” and had entered a new stage of treatment, after successfully finishing the post-operative phase.

Rio Carnival 2013 kicks off in Brazil

Rio annual carnival has kicked off in Brazil, but the parades and street parties have a sombre tinge coming after a nightclub fire that killed 238 people.

More than 60 casualties of the inferno remain in hospital, and many cities – particularly near the southern city of Santa Maria where the fire happened – have scaled down their festivities as a result.

For Brazil, Rio Carnival 2013 is an important test of the city’s infrastructure ahead of the big sporting events lined up for the future, including the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

Streets in Rio, where festivities kick off on Saturday, were already crowded on Friday with thousands of people, following more spontaneous street parades.

This year, more than 700 processions will make their way through various parts of the city, with US actress Megan Fox among the international celebrities expected to take part.

The carnival is set to draw 1.1 million tourists to Rio, generating some $650 million for the local economy. Hotels and restaurants are booked almost to capacity.

South Korean pop phenomenon PSY – whose trademark Gangnam Style dance mimicking trotting on a horse, holding the reins and spinning a lasso has made him a household name – will perform during the street parties in Brazil’s third largest city, Salvador.

Last year, the Cordao da Bola Preta, one of Rio’s oldest and most popular carnival street parties, attracted 2.2 million revellers – the largest crowd in its 93-year history.

From Sunday, Samba schools compete with each other at spectacular parades in special stadiums known as sambadromes – with elaborately decorated floats and dancers wearing multicolored costumes often adorned with large feathers.

Annette Schavan resigns over plagiarism row

German Education Minister Annette Schavan has resigned after Heinrich Heine University stripped her of her doctorate for plagiarism.

Duesseldorf’s Heinrich Heine University voted last Tuesday to remove her doctorate following a review.

Annette Schavan, a close ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel, had insisted she would fight the ruling and not resign.

In 2011, Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg also quit after allegations he plagiarized his thesis.

Annette Schavan, 57, was awarded her doctorate 30 years ago, but the university found she had “systematically and intentionally” copied parts of it.

She had been scathing in her criticism of Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg when the scandal of his plagiarism broke.

Analysts say her resignation will be hugely embarrassing to Angela Merkel.

Angela Merkel is facing federal elections on September 22.

Part of Annette Schavan’s brief as education minister is to oversee German universities.

Mohammad Afzal Guru hanged over Delhi parliament attack plot

Mohammad Afzal Guru, the Kashmiri militant sentenced to death over a 2001 plot to attack India’s parliament, has been hanged after his final clemency plea was rejected.

Officials said Mohammad Afzal Guru, who had been on death row since 2002, was executed at Tihar jail near Delhi.

Afzal Guru had always denied plotting the attack, which left 14 dead.

India has stepped up security and announced a curfew in Indian-administered Kashmir, where news of the execution was expected to spark unrest.

Executions are very rare in India – Afzal Guru’s was only the second since 2004, after Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving attacker from the 2008 Mumbai attack was executed in November.

“This is only about the law taking its course,” Home Secretary RK Singh said.

Hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in towns and cities across Indian-administered Kashmir to try to contain any unrest sparked by the execution.

Claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan, Kashmir has been a flashpoint for more than 60 years and two wars have been fought over it.

The December 2001 attack was one of the most controversial incidents in recent Indian history, correspondents say.

Five rebels stormed India’s parliament in Delhi on December 13, 2001, killing a gardener and eight policemen before they were shot dead by security forces.

India blamed the attack on the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group, which it said was backed by Pakistan.

Pakistan denied involvement in the attack but relations between the two countries nosedived as their armies massed about a million troops along the border.

Mohammad Afzal Guru, a former fruit seller, was one of two men sentenced to death for helping to plan the attack, although the sentence of Shaukat Hussain was later reduced on appeal to 10 years in jail.

He was found guilty of arranging weapons for the attackers and of membership of Jaish-e-Mohammed, both of which he denied.

Two other people accused in the case, SAR Geelani and Afsan Guru, were acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

Mohammad Afzal Guru’s appeal was first refused by the Supreme Court and then the president.

Beyoncé unflattering Super Bowl photo becomes instant meme

An “unflattering” picture of Beyoncé performing at the Super Bowl’s halftime show has transformed into a meme rivaling McKayla Maroney’s now-iconic “Not Impressed” scowl.

After Beyoncé’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, emailed Buzzfeed earlier this week to ask that the site “respectfully change” several images of her client to “some better photos” from the halftime show, her attempt backfired in epic proportions.

Buzzfeed published the email, and in the Internet phenomenon known as the Streisand Effect, one image in particular circulated so virulently it became an instant meme.

The original seven images that Yvette Noel-Schure asked Buzzfeed to remove were included in a list of “The 33 Fiercest Moments From Beyoncé’s Halftime Show”.

Yvette Noel-Schure wrote: “As discussed, there are some unflattering photos on your current feed that we are respectfully asking you to change.

“I am certain you will be able to find some better photos. The worst are #5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 19 and 22.”

Since the email became public on Monday, internet users have been trying to come up with ways to make Beyoncé’s “unflattering” facial expressions even more unflattering via Reddit and other social media platforms.

So far, Beyoncé has been turned into a bloody zombie, a “She Hulk”, Conan’s wife, and an Olympic weightlifter.

More creative types have created GIFs dedicated to her “fierce” poses.

One in particular shows Beyoncé’s limbs contracting into her torso, before she shoots off like a turtle with a rocket launcher attached to her leather bodysuit.

And another puts dumbbells in Beyoncé’s hands, reinventing her as a bodybuilder.

Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn: golfer sends his private jet to Austria to fly skier girlfriend home for surgery

0

Tiger Woods dispatched his private jet to an airport in Austria on Friday so Olympic golds medalist Lindsey Vonn could fly home to the U.S. to undergo several necessary surgeries.

Lindsey Vonn, 28, suffered two torn knee ligaments earlier this week after a ghastly fall doing the super-G during the Alpine Ski World Championships.

Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn were linked after being spotted in Antigua in January and on the slopes in Austria last November.

Lindsey Vonn – who divorced fellow skier Thomas Vonn last month after 11 years together – “will not participate in any speculation surrounding her personal life at this time”, she said in a statement last month.

But a source told Us Weekly: “They’ve been seeing each other for the past 9 months or so regularly.”

Tiger Woods has been a free man since 2010 when he was divorced by wife Elin Nordegren after she discovered he’d cheated on her with a string of women.

Elin Nordegren, 33, lives in North Palm Beach, Florida funded by her reported $100 million settlement with the golfer, with whom she shares kids Samantha, 5, and Charlie, 3.

Shockwaves were sent through the sporting world in December 2009 when it was revealed that Tiger Woods had cheated so many times.

Swedish supermodel Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods were married for five years. Tiger Woods’ career and marriage fell apart after he was revealed as a serial cheater.

Since their divorce, Elin Nordegren has dated several men, including wealthy financier Jamie Dingman and professional hockey player Douglas Murray, to whom she was first romantically linked in July 2012.

Tiger Woods, 38, appears to have learnt from his mistakes and is making every effort to go the distance with his new love.

“He wants to marry again and thinks Lindsey could be the woman,” a source close to the golfer revealed to Star magazine.

Lindsey Vonn was reportedly wary of getting involved with the golfing star because of his past, but it appears that Tiger Woods has pulled out all the stops to prove he has learnt from his mistakes.

After Tiger Woods whisked Lindsey away to Antigua for a romantic break, and earlier this month he stopped off on his way to The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship to visit her in Austria, where she was competing in a World Cup Ski event.

Tiger Woods’ form has improved since he has been seeing the champion skier: after dropping out of the top 50 in 2011, his ranking is now back up to No. 2.

Lindsey Vonn was married to fellow 2002 Olympian and former US Ski Team athlete Thomas Vonn in 2007, at the Silver Lake Lodge in Deer Valley, Utah. The couple were married for four years, but began divorce proceedings in November 2011. Their divorce was finalized in January 2013.

Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System: first bionic eye awaits FDA approval

Last month, the Food Drug Administration  (FDA) was supposed to approve the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System by California developer Second Sight, now those in the U.S. who would qualify for the device wait with bated breath as February roars on.

A first of its kind technology, first bionic eye Argus II was already approved for use in Europe in 2011 and is the culmination of 20 years of scientific research into the delicate and deeply complex sight organ.

The implant and eyewear duo will most benefit patients with an inherited form of degenerative blindness that destroys the retina called retinitis pigmentosa, which affects about 3,000 people in the U.S.

Sufferers of the disease experience a gradual retinal generation and an accompanying loss of vision that eventually leads to blindness.

By implanting a series of electrodes inside the eye, the Argus II prosthesis will make up for the failing retina by itself transmitting information about lightness and darkness, for instance, to the brain.

A second aspect of the Argus II is the eyeglass headset.

Patients wear eyeglasses mounted with cameras that then transmit data about what is in front of them to a small wearable computer.

From there, the information is transmitted wirelessly to the implant and the brain is sent a series of electrical impulses the patient eventually learns to interpret as light, dark, and shapes.

“No one really thought it would be possible because the tissue around the eye is so soft and delicate,” Dr. Mark Humayun, of the Keck School of Medicine at USC told the Wall Street Journal.

“If we continue to develop this type of technology and begin to understand the new electrical language of pulses to the brain, to the eye, we can apply it to other parts of the body and we can change our world and how we relate to it,” continued Dr. Mark Humayun, who has been working on the technology for 25 years and is co-creator the Argus II.

A first of its kind technology, first bionic eye Argus II was already approved for use in Europe in 2011 and is the culmination of 20 years of scientific research into the delicate and deeply complex sight organ

One early patient, Elias Konstantopoulos of Glen Burnie, Maryland, had lost his sight completely to retinitis pigmentosa and sought help from the Argus II researchers.

After undergoing the implantation in 2011, Elias Konstantopoulos was able to distinguish between dark and light and used that ability to help him maneuver through space.

His hope is to one day see the face of his grandson, Anthony.

Neither Elias Konstantopoulos nor any of the other recipients of the Argus II in the U.S. and Europe thus far are able to see completely normally.

However, researchers say some of the Argus II recipients are able to identify letters just a few inches tall.

Dr. Mark Humayun says the device’s reliance on an external computer is key to its future success and usefulness.

“Software upgrades will allow us to do more for people – because the implants don’t need to change, the glasses can be enhanced with software upgrades.”

Mark Humayun sees a future where thanks to his device, once-blind patients will see in various colors and even, he says, in digital zoom, just like “your iPhone”.

Kate Upton second Sports Illustrated cover leaked online

Kate Upton’s second ever cover for Sports Illustrated magazine has been revealed after it was leaked online.

Kate Upton, 20, is near topless as she shows off her famous curves in white bikini bottoms in a snap so scorching she could melt the ice caps in the background.

The blonde bombshell covers her modesty with a fur-lined hooded jacket, pressing her cleavage together as she holds up the hood.

In the snaps, Kate Upton wears minimal make-up on her youthful complexion and has her blonde locks out in a straight style.

Back in December, Kate Upton was seen working the chilly shoot for the magazine spread on a boat with the Sports Illustrated crew.

Sports Illustrated chartered the boat for a ten day voyage between Argentina and Antarctica.

Apparently, they wanted to photograph Kate Upton for the forthcoming issue of the magazine with a backdrop of icebergs.

Kate Upton was more than happy to take part, after all it was featuring on the cover of the magazine’s much-lauded swimsuit edition that Kate first came to public attention last year.

Kate Upton's second ever cover for Sports Illustrated magazine has been revealed after it was leaked online

Since that now famous issue, which hit newsstands in February 2012, Kate Upton has become one of America’s top rated models.

Furthermore, she has made the tricky leap from swimsuit model to high fashion, appearing on the covers of American and Italian Vogue.

In photographs from the photo shoot, Kate Upton can be seen braving the incredibly cold minus temperatures in just a small white bikini top and tasseled bottoms.

Her feet, in thermal moon boots, are just as white as the snow piled up on the deck of the boat.

Eventually, Kate Upton was able to swap the ebb and flow of the Antarctic Sea for the firm ground of Antarctica itself.

Bizarrely, Kate Upton was greeted by a man dressed as an Oreo cookie once she stepped on terra firma.

It is not clear why there was a man dressed as a giant biscuit on the icy uninhabited continent, but he might have been overseeing the delivery of 5,000 Oreo cookies to the scientists based at the Palmer Station in the Antarctic Peninsula.

Hillary Clinton is more popular than Barack Obama, shows Quinnipiac poll

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appears to be one of the most popular figures in Washington, even more popular then President Barack Obama himself, according to new polls.

The influential poll out of Quinnipiac University gives the former top American diplomat a 61% favorability rating, according to Huffington Post.

That’s a ten point on Barack Obama, who was up until recently her boss and who just won reelection to the highest office in the land for the second time.

In the telephone poll taken January 30 through February 4, Hillary Clinton also beat out fellow beltway big wigs Vice President Joseph Biden, House Speaker John Boehner, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and new Secretary of State, John Kerry.

“Hillary Clinton ends her term as Secretary of State and the bruising inquiry into the Benghazi murders as easily the most popular actor on the American political stage today,” said Quinnipiac’s assistant polling director Peter A. Brown told the Huffington Post.

But that has by no means always been the case.

Hillary Clinton’s popularity remained at the current levels basically throughout her tenure as Secretary of State.

Hillary Clinton appears to be one of the most popular figures in Washington, even more popular then President Barack Obama himself
Hillary Clinton appears to be one of the most popular figures in Washington, even more popular then President Barack Obama himself

However, starting from Hillary Clinton’s time as a first lady maligned by many, due in part to her avid politicking for healthcare reform, she has seen her share of intense public scrutiny, both negative and positive.

The prevailing public view of Hillary Clinton’s ebbed and flowed as she weathered her husband’s high-profile infidelity, ran for and won a U.S. Senate seat, and eventually went on to narrowly lose the 2008 Democratic Presidential, primary.

Now, as Hillary Clinton enters private life with the world wondering if she’ll make 2016 presidential run, she is seeing some of her highest favorability ratings of all time.

That leaves her potential rivals, many of whom this same Quinnipiac poll currently list as less popular, wondering the very same thing.

John Kerry refuses to speak French at his maiden press conference as US Secretary of State

US Secretary of State John Kerry has prompted a Gallic shrug by refusing to speak French at his maiden news conference in the new position.

Asked to answer a question with a “bit of French please”, John Kerry said: “Not today. I got to refresh myself on that.”

The response surprised some in the francophone world as John Kerry attended a Swiss boarding school and is known to speak the language well.

He was speaking after meeting his Canadian counterpart in Washington.

John Kerry’s knowledge of French prompted scorn from the right-wing US press during his unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 2004, due to the souring of US-French ties over the war in Iraq.

Since then, he has played down his language proficiency, bolstered during childhood summers spent at his mother’s family estate in Brittany.

Foreign Minister John Baird was the first foreign dignitary to be welcomed to the state department by John Kerry since he took office last week.

Speaking alongside John Baird at his maiden press conference as the top US diplomat, John Kerry urged Iran to address concerns about its nuclear programme.

The 69-year-old former Massachusetts senator said the US was committed to preventing Iran from securing a nuclear weapon and would continue its policy of both pressure and engagement to try to bring this about.

He said the international community would respond, if – as he put it – Iran was ready to talk substance at the negotiations to take place in Kazakhstan later this month. Iran insists its nuclear programme is solely for civilian purposes.

The 2004 Democratic presidential candidate was greeted by a cheering crowd of employees on Monday in the large black-marble lobby of the state department.

John Kerry succeeds Hillary Clinton who, in her four years as the top US diplomat, visited 112 countries and notched up nearly a million air miles.

In a speech to staff, John Kerry joked that he had “big heels to fill”.

The new state department head has spent much of his first week getting in touch with foreign leaders.

Last weekend, he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

John Kerry also contacted the foreign ministers of Japan, South Korea, Turkey and Mexico, as well as John Baird.

Lunar New Year 2013: Chinese New Year begins on Sunday when the new moon is seen in the sky

Millions of people across the world are preparing to celebrate Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, the most important annual holiday in much of Asia.

Chinese New Year begins on Sunday, when the new moon is seen in the sky.

In the Chinese zodiac, this year will be the year of the snake, taking over from the dragon of 2012.

In China, an estimated 200 million people are travelling to be with their families in what is considered the biggest mass human migration on Earth.

Vast crowds of people have passed through railway stations, airports and bus stations onto crowded transport, many of them making journeys of thousands of miles, sometimes lasting several days.

Migrant workers in China often only have one holiday a year in which to visit their home towns, and will be taking the money they have saved back to their families.

“For Chinese, the most important thing is to be with family. Family always comes first,” Jin Yuan, a 34-year-old worker in Beijing told Reuters.

“No matter how busy I am, I must go home. That is why so many people in Beijing are travelling home for the Lunar New Year.”

Vietnamese media said tens of thousands of people were also on the move there.

Markets and shops across the region have been selling red and gold decorations – colors considered lucky – for the past few weeks, bearing messages wishing good fortune and prosperity.

“Tet is an important event and the house must be decorated,” said Dam Duc Thong, a shopper in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, using the Vietnamese name for the holiday.

“I buy these ornaments with hope to bring good luck to my family.”

Traditional foods associated with long life or good luck are a key part of lunar new year festivities.

“I’m slicing the rice cake so that people can make rice noodle soup during the holidays,” said Oh Jung-sook, a 72-year-old rice cake seller in the South Korean capital, Seoul.

“People say that eating rice noodle soup can keep them healthy, age one more year and have no unfortunate events for the family throughout the year.”

The new year is traditionally brought in with fireworks and firecrackers, but residents of Beijing have been asked to set off fewer this year, in an attempt to minimize additional pollution in the frequently smog-bound city.

Winter Storm Nemo: Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island declare states of emergency

Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island have declared states of emergency as Winter Storm Nemo begins dumping a massive three feet of snow across the North East Coast resulting in at least one death.

Thick snow is blanketing the north-eastern US as Nemo storm cuts power to thousands of homes and plays havoc with transport schedules.

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut and Maine are all on an emergency footing, with millions of residents being warned to stay indoors.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has temporarily banned all non-essential traffic on the state’s roads.

Meteorologists say the storm could be New England’s worst for decades.

Airlines cancelled more than 4,300 flights – including all those to and from the three major airports in New York City – and the train operator Amtrak has suspended nearly all services north of the city.

People have been warned to stay off the roads, and stock up on food and other supplies as the storm affects 25 million people in the region.

With the heaviest snow expected late on Friday and early on Saturday, blizzard warnings were in effect for much of the coastal section of the north-eastern US, from Newark to southern Maine.

Forecasters said the storm could dump as much as 3 feet (90 cm) of snow in some places as it hammered swathes of territory, with winds of up to 75 mph (120 km/h) expected to create deep drifts.

Parts of Massachusetts were already under a foot of snow by Friday night, with more expected over the weekend. Some 350,000 homes and businesses across the region were without electricity.

“This is a storm of major proportions,” warned Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

“Stay off the roads. Stay home.”

In New York City, which is expecting a 12 in dousing, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said snow ploughs and 250,000 tonnes of salt were being put on standby.

Winter storm Nemo has also disrupted New York Fashion Week, which is held under a big tent. Organizers say they will bring in extra crews to help with snow removal and add an extra layer of tenting to the venue.

Some neighborhoods in the city are still recovering from Sandy, an October storm that brought record flooding. Many of those areas face a renewed risk of storm surge and flooding from the winter storm.

Fuel shortages were being reported from Connecticut to New York City as motorists queue at petrol stations to fill up vehicles, generators and snow blowers.

The National Weather Service had earlier said the combination of two weather systems from the polar and sub-tropical jet streams would produce a “potentially historic” storm.

Snow was being blamed for a 19-car pileup in Maine on Friday morning.

Further north, meanwhile, Ontario has already seen 200 vehicle accidents, the CBC reported. At least three people have been killed.
