4-MEI: High levels of carcinogen still found in Pepsi drinks

0

An environmental group has revealed that the caramel coloring used in Pepsi, 4-methylimidazole, still contains a concerning level of a carcinogen, even after the company said it would change its formula.

In March, PepsiCo Inc. and Coca-Cola Co. said they would adjust their formulas across the U.S. after California passed a law ruling drinks with a certain level of carcinogens display a cancer warning.

Chemical 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI or 4-Mel) can form during the cooking process and may subsequently be found in trace amounts in many foods.

Watchdog group The Center for Environmental Health found that while Coke products no longer test positive for the chemical, Pepsi products sold outside of California still do.

Pepsi said its caramel coloring suppliers are changing their manufacturing process to cut the amount of 4-MEI in its caramel. That process is complete in California and will be finished in February 2014 in the rest of the country. Pepsi said it will also be taken out globally, but did not indicate a timeline.

Meanwhile, the company said the FDA and other regulatory agencies around the world consider Pepsi’s caramel coloring safe.

Coca-Cola said it has transitioned to using a modified caramel in U.S. markets beyond California that does not contain 4-MEI, so it wouldn’t have to have separate inventory of products for different locations. It also said all of its products, whether they have the modified caramel or not, are safe.

The watchdog group Center for Environmental Health said it commissioned Eurofins Analystical laboratory in Metairie, Louisiana, to test Coke and Pepsi products from California in May and from across the country in June.

The lab did not find the chemical in California products. And it found no 4-MEI in nine out of 10 Coke products outside of the state.

But it found levels of 4-MEI that are 4 to 8 times higher than California safety levels in all 10 Pepsi products purchased outside California, according to the Center for Environmental Health.

Trace amounts of 4-MEI have not been linked to cancer in humans.

The American Beverage Association said that California added the coloring to its list of carcinogens with no studies showing that it causes cancer in humans.

It noted that the listing was based on a single study in lab mice and rats.

The Food and Drug Administration has also said that a consumer would have to drink more than 1,000 cans of soda a day to reach the doses administered that have shown links to cancer in rodents.

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo account for almost 90% of the soda market, according to industry tracker Beverage Digest.

Mohamed Morsi ousted by Egypt’s army

General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, the head of Egypt’s army, has given a TV address, announcing that President Mohamed Morsi is no longer in office.

Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said the constitution had been suspended and the chief justice of the constitutional court would take on Mohamed Morsi’s powers.

Flanked by religious and opposition leaders, General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said Mohamed Morsi had “failed to meet the demands of the Egyptian people”.

Anti-Morsi protesters in Cairo gave a huge cheer in response to the speech.

The army’s move to depose the president follows four days of mass street demonstrations against Mohamed Morsi, and an ultimatum issued by the military which expired on Wednesday afternoon.

TV stations belonging to Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood went off air at the end of the speech.

Minutes later, a notice went up on Mohamed Morsi’s Facebook page denouncing the army move as a “military coup”.

The statement asked Egyptian citizens – both civilians and military – to “abide by the constitution and the law and not to respond to this coup”.

The ousted leader’s current whereabouts are unclear.

General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said on state TV that the armed forces could not stay silent and blind to the call of the Egyptian masses.

He spoke of a new roadmap for the future, and said that the chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adli Mansour, would be given the task of “running the country’s affairs during the transitional period until the election of a new president”.

After General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi’s address, both Pope Tawadros II – the head of the Coptic Church – and leading opposition figure Mohammed ElBaradei made short televised speeches about the new roadmap for Egypt’s future which they had agreed with the army.

Mohammed ElBaradei said the roadmap aimed for national reconciliation and represented a fresh start to the January 2011 revolution.

“This roadmap has been drafted by honorable people who seek the interests, first and foremost, of the country,” added Pope Tawadros.

The army is currently involved in a show of force, fanning out across Cairo and taking control of the capital.

The tens of thousands of anti-Morsi protesters on the streets of Cairo are now celebrating, with fireworks lighting up the night sky and car drivers honking their horns in excitement.

But Mohamed Morsi supporters elsewhere in the city are reported to have shouted: “No to military rule.”

Prince reveals he does not own a cell phone during V Magazine interview

In a new interview with V Magazine, legendary Prince hints that he does not have a cell phone.

When asked whether he owned a highly coveted iPhone, Prince scoffed.

“Are you serious? Hell, no,” Prince, 54, says, before mimicking a high-voiced woman.

“Where is my phone? Can you call my phone? Oh, I can’t find it.”

In fact Prince reveals that he hardly communicates with others much at all, just a select few in his team.

“This organization is different than most, in the sense that we don’t take directions from the outside world,” the singer explains.

“It’s like a galaxy. The sun is in the center giving off energy, and everything revolves around it … Nobody really talks to me. Nobody talks to me a lot.”

Prince says he mostly communicates directly with his devoted assistant Ramadan.

“I talk to her. She talks to you. She talks to Richard. And so on and so forth. If I trust her, then you can trust her,” the singer explains.

In his interview, featured in the August edition of V Magazine, Prince also slams lip-synching, telling the publication that he would not dare to cheat his fans like that.

“People come to see us fifty times. Well, that’s not just going to see a concert – that’s some other mess going on,” he explains.

“This music changes you. These people are not being satisfied elsewhere by musicians, you feel what I’m saying?

“It’s no disrespect to anyone else, because we’re not checking for them. But we don’t lip synch. We ain’t got time for it. Ain’t no tape up there.”

And when it comes to his large catalog of hits, Prince says he does not have a favorite, referring to his songs as “babies”.

“Which one of your children do you like the best?” he says.

“Music comes from the same source. It’s all the same thing.”

In his photo shoot for the magazine, Prince, who has had a hit-making career spanning over three decades, sports a large Afro that compliments his retro look.

Prince is dressed like a 1970’s super-villain with a wild silver and tapestry-style jacket.

Adorning his eyes is his signature guy-liner along with a coating of makeup.

Prince, who’s produced 10 platinum albums and 30 Top 40 singles, has altered his look many times over the years – while always maintaining a gender neutral theme.

Prince’s androgynous look and “Minnesota sound” has been inspired by soul stars and rockers like James Brown, Little Richard, and Jimi Hendrix.

“You learn from the best,” Prince has said of both his musical and fashion influences.

V Magazine’s August issue hits newsstands on July 18th.

Is it time to upgrade and you want to search for a phone to fill your video-making needs? Of course, you might already have a great phone for videography in your pocket. iPhones are capable of shooting high-quality 1080p HD video. They also feature software for image stabilization, so people who view your videos won’t be left wondering if an earthquake was happening.

There are also attachments available for iPhones that are not typically available for other models, including a variety of external lenses.

If you prefer to use a device with the Android operating system, consider the 2013 HTC phones, which feature spectacular HD cameras. Like iPhones, HTC phones have image stabilization software, which the HTC website says makes for videos that are “stable and a joy to watch.” You can also watch your videos in slow motion, so you don’t miss one beat of the action.

2. The Right Lighting

No matter how good the camera on your phone is, a video is generally only as good as the lighting in which the shooting took place. You know the basic principles of lighting. You need enough light, and not too much light behind your subject. When you are indoors, you can manipulate those things. When your shooting happens outside, the sun presents a new challenge. The Golden Light app will let you know the time of day that is best for shooting.

Lighting Designer is an iPad app for those truly serious about their mobile movie production. It serves as a tool for you to design lighting for your production. Choose the types of lights and their positions, create a floor plan, and communicate the set up to the crew who is helping with your video-making.

James Gandolfini will reveals he left bulk of his $70 million estate to his children

James Gandolfini’s newly-filed will reveals the actor has left the bulk of his estimated $70 million estate to his 13-year-old son Michael and 8-month-old daughter Liliana.

James Gandolfini, who died of a heart attack while on vacation in Italy last month, also left millions to his wife, his two older sisters and friends – including his personal secretary and assistant.

The will, which was seen by the New York Post, was signed on December 19 last year and filed in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court on Tuesday.

It shows that James Gandolfini’s teenage son Michael by his first wife is to get the largest chunk of his father’s estate through a trust set aside for him until he turns 21.

Through the trust, Michael Gandolfini will also be able to buy his father’s lavish home and parking space in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

Michael Gandolfini will split his father’s Italian property with his half-sister, Liliana, when she turns 25.

James Gandolfini asked in the documents that they “keep it in our family for as long as possible”.

His other properties – a $1.1 million home in Califon, New Jersey, and a $7 million penthouse in Tribeca, Manhattan – are not specifically mentioned in the will but it notes they can be sold.

Michael Gandolfini also gets his father’s clothing and jewelry.

The remainder of James Gandolfini’s estate will be split among his wife, Deborah Lin, his sisters, Johanna Antonacci and Leta Gandolfini, and his baby daughter Liliana.

Johanna Antonacci and Leta Gandolfini each get 30% of the leftover estate, while Deborah Lin and little Liliana will each receive 20%. He also left $500,000 to each of his two nieces, the daughters of Johanna.

James Gandolfini left $200,000 each to his personal assistant and friend, Thomas Richardson, and secretary, Trixie Flynn Bourne, and amounts of $100,000 and $50,000 to other select friends.

The actor was estimated to be worth up to $70 million when he died of a sudden heart attack on June 19 when he was just 51.

James Gandolfini was found suffering a heart attack by his son Michael and was pronounced dead in hospital. A funeral for the beloved actor was held in Manhattan last week.

His family joined more than 1,000 mourners including Edith “Edie” Falco, Gandolfini’s on-screen wife, for the two-hour ceremony, which was described as a “wonderful” tribute to the star.

Friend Thomas Richardson, who was named in the will, described how every day with James Gandolfini was an adventure, whether it was sharing sushi on set or helping New Jersey residents recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

“He really made the most of every day,” he said.

“In his passing, he is forever with us. Amen.”

The will is the first and primary filing of James Gandolfini’s estate; more documents are expected to be filed.

Egypt: Army deployed into key sites amid Cairo tension

Egypt’s army has moved into key sites in Cairo hours after its ultimatum passed for President Mohamed Morsi to resolve a political crisis.

Tens of thousands of pro- and anti-Morsi protesters have gathered in areas of the capital, as Egyptians await a televised statement.

Opposition figure Mohammed ElBaradei and religious leaders will make this statement, the state news agency said.

Before the deadline passed, Mohamed Morsi repeated his refusal to step down.

His aides took to social media to describe the events as a military coup but there was no confirmation of this.

There are unconfirmed reports that Egyptian officials have placed an international travel ban on Mohamed Morsi and other senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The army is involved in a show of force, fanning out across Cairo and taking control of the capital.

He described seeing eight armored personnel carriers heading for Cairo University in Giza, where one of the main pro-Morsi demonstrations was being held. At least 16 people were killed and about 200 wounded at the university when gunmen opened fire on protesters on Tuesday night.

Another pro-Morsi protest was being held in Nasr City, where New York Times reporter Kareem Fahim tweeted that soldiers had fired into the air to disperse demonstrators.

Opponents of the president gathered in Tahrir Square in their tens of thousands. When the army’s 48-hour deadline passed, cheers echoed across the square.

Whether it is a military coup or not, on the streets of Cairo it certainly looks like one.

Egypt’s army has moved into key sites in Cairo hours after its ultimatum passed for President Mohamed Morsi to resolve a political crisis
Egypt’s army has moved into key sites in Cairo hours after its ultimatum passed for President Mohamed Morsi to resolve a political crisis

Before the army’s ultimatum to President Mohamed Morsi expired at 16:30 local time, he posted a Facebook message calling for a roadmap involving an interim coalition government.

His whereabouts were not immediately clear but BBC Arabic confirmed that he was at the Cairo headquarters of the Republican Guard, a military site where he has stayed since the start of the protests.

One of Mohamed Morsi’s aides, Issam al-Haddad, wrote on his Facebook page that he was “fully aware” his words might be the “last lines I get to post on this page”, adding that what was happening was a “military coup”.

The army had earlier held meetings with political and religious leaders to discuss the crisis.

But the ruling Freedom and Justice party – the political arm of Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood – stayed away from the talks.

Mohamed Morsi’s opponents have accused him and the Muslim Brotherhood of pushing an Islamist agenda onto Egypt, and say that he should stand down.

In a defiant televised speech on Tuesday evening, Mohamed Morsi said he would give his life to defend constitutional legitimacy, and blamed the unrest on corruption and remnants of the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak.

Army chief Gen Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was reported to have met his top commanders on Wednesday – and a source close to the military told AFP news agency they had been discussing details of a post-Morsi roadmap.

Members of the Tamarod (Rebel) movement, which has mobilized millions of demonstrators onto the streets to demand Mohamed Morsi’s resignation, were also part of the meeting. So too were leading religious figures and Mohammed ElBaradei.

The president was put under further pressure by the resignation of six ministers from his government on Monday, including Foreign Minister Kamel Amr.

Mohamed Morsi became Egypt’s first Islamist president on 30 June 2012, after winning an election considered free and fair following the 2011 revolution that toppled Mubarak.

But dissent has been growing, with protesters angry at the lack of change in post-revolution Egypt and accusing the Brotherhood of trying to protect its own interests.

“This is a president threatening his own people. We don’t consider him the president of Egypt,” said Mohammed Abdelaziz, a leader of Tamarod.

However, Mohamed Morsi and the Brotherhood still have significant public support, and both sides have drawn huge numbers to rallies in recent days.

At least 39 people have now died since the protests began on Sunday.

The instability has also hit global oil prices, sending US light crude above $100 a barrel for the first time since September last year, amid concerns supply routes through the Suez Canal could be affected.

King Albert II of the Belgians announces his abdication

King Albert II of the Belgians has announced his abdication.

In a national televised address, King Albert, 79, said he would step down in favor of his son Crown Prince Philippe, 53, on July 21st, Belgium’s national day.

The monarch said his health was no longer good enough to fulfill his duties, and he would step down after nearly 20 years on the throne.

He is the first of Belgium’s line of six monarchs to abdicate.

“I realize that my age and my health are no longer allowing me to carry out my duties as I would like to,” King Albert said.

“Prince Philippe is well prepared to succeed me.”

King Albert met the Belgian government’s cabinet earlier on Wednesday to inform them of his decision, Belgian state TV reported.

King Albert II of the Belgians has announced his abdication
King Albert II of the Belgians has announced his abdication

King Albert was sworn in as the sixth king of the Belgians on 9 August 1993, following the death of his brother, King Baudouin at the age of 62.

After he succeeded his brother, King Albert became embroiled in a major royal scandal when he was alleged to be the father of an out-of-wedlock daughter, Delphine Boel, and suffered a crisis in his marriage with Queen Paola.

That issue came to the fore again this spring when Delphine Boel opened court proceedings to prove she was the king’s daughter. There is some speculation in the media that this may have influenced his decision to abdicate.

Belgium has a constitutional monarchy in which the king plays a largely ceremonial role.

One of the duties the monarch does have is trying to resolve constitutional crises.

King Albert exercised his authority in mediating between political leaders on the formation of a government during the 2010-2011 parliamentary stalemate, when Belgium was left without a government for 541 days after elections failed to find a clear winner.

Tensions between the two main language communities of Flemish and French sometimes run high, and the issue has brought down several governments, creating frequent political instability.

Respect for the royal family, though, is one of the few factors that cross the communal divide.

King Albert’s announcement comes only three months after Queen Beatrix of the neighboring Netherlands vacated the Dutch throne in favor of her son Willem-Alexander.

4th of July 2013 weather: Rain expected in east and droughts in west

Bad weather is expected to put a dampener on 4th of July celebrations in the south and mid-west with rain and threats of heavy flooding on Thursday.

The unsettled conditions could upset favorite holiday activities including firework displays, barbecues and days at the beach.

In the north-east, coastal areas will be mainly dry on Thursday following scattered showers and thunderstorms in West Virginia, upstate New York, northern Vermont and New Hampshire today.

Parties in the south may take a hit according to the Weather Channel. Rain and thunderstorms have been forecast from the eastern Gulf Coast to Tennessee, Kentucky and the southeast.

There is a danger of heavy flooding in northern Georgia, northern Alabama, eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky, the far western Carolinas and the mountains over the next 48 hours.

It is also expected to be a washed-out Fourth for the Midwest from eastern Ohio to the Great Lakes.

Bad weather is expected to put a dampener on 4th of July celebrations in the south and mid-west with rain and threats of heavy flooding on Thursday

However. there is better news for the Plains where Thursday will be dry with temperatures climbing to 90F.

There will be the odd thunderstorm on the Fourth from the Southwest to Northwest at higher altitudes.

Extreme heat and dry conditions are being forecast for Thursday in the southwest. Temperatures of 110F are expected from southern Nevada into the California and western Arizona deserts.

Although dry conditions are expected in the west, firework displays may be canceled because of droughts and fire bans.

However, most bans are only in place for private properties and towns will hold exhibitions.

It is expected to be the reverse on the east coast, where there will be scattered showers.

Meterologist Alex Sosnowski told Accuweather.com: “The pattern through Independence Day and the weekend beyond in some Eastern locations favors additional widely separated torrential downpours and conditions favoring fog in some locations.”

However he added: “A pocket of mostly rain-free weather will stretch from the coastal part of the Carolinas to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City and perhaps Boston on Thursday evening.”

The Plains looks likely to be the best region for Fourth of July firework celebrations with low humidity and gentle breezes forecast.

Ariel Castro asks permission to visit daughter Jocelyn he fathered with Amanda Berry

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro has asked permission today to visit the six-year-old daughter Jocelyn he fathered with Amanda Berry, one of the women he stands accused of keeping captive for ten years at his home.

At the end of a pre-trial hearing on Wednesday, Ariel Castro, bearded with his chin tucked to his chest for most of time, asked to see Jocelyn he had with kidnapping victim Amanda Berry.

Cleveland judge Michael Russo denied the request, saying: “I just think that would be inappropriate.”

Amanda Berry was dramatically rescued from Ariel Castro’s Cleveland home along with Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and her 6-year-old Jocelyn on May 6.

The three women had been kept prisoner by Ariel Castro for almost ten years and suffered systematic rapes, beatings and induced abortions at the hands of the 52-year-old former school bus driver.

Amanda Berry, now 27, is living currently with her sister Beth Serrano in Cleveland and is said to be suffering from the horrifying memories of her ordeal at the hands of her captor.

Ariel Castro was found competent to stand trial at the hearing today.

An examination found that Ariel Castro is mentally able to understand the charges and assist attorneys in his defense, Cuyahoga County judge said.

At the end of a pre-trial hearing, Ariel Castro asked to see daughter Jocelyn he had with kidnapping victim Amanda Berry
At the end of a pre-trial hearing, Ariel Castro asked to see daughter Jocelyn he had with kidnapping victim Amanda Berry

He has pleaded not guilty to a 329-count indictment that includes multiple kidnapping and rape charges. He’s being held on an $8 million bond.

Cleveland authorities accuse Ariel Castro of kidnapping Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry between 2002 and 2004 when they were 20, 14, and 16 years old.

Also on Wednesday, prosecutor Tim McGinty said a meeting is planned for July 11 to discuss the possibility of seeking the death penalty for Ariel Castro, who faces aggravated murder charges stemming from allegations that he caused the deliberate termination of one of the women’s pregnancies.

Tim McGinty invited Ariel Castro’s attorney Craig Weintraub to submit evidence to him before the meeting to support an argument against the death penalty in the upcoming discussions.

Ariel Castro’s attorneys have previously hinted that he might plead guilty if talk of capital punishment was taken off the table.

Tim McGinty said prosecutors would be going back to the county grand jury to seek more charges against Ariel Castro, but he didn’t know when that would happen.

Ariel Castro has pleaded not guilty to a 329-count indictment alleging he kidnapped Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus off the streets between 2002 and 2004 and held them for a decade in his two-story home in a rough Cleveland neighborhood.

He fathered a six-year-old daughter child with Amanda Berry and is accused of starving and punching Michelle Knight to cause her to miscarry.

Ariel Castro was arrested on May 6, shortly after one of the women broke through a door at the home and yelled to neighbors for help.

The trial is scheduled for August 5, but judge Michael Russo said it could be delayed. Another hearing is set for July 24.

Last month, prosecutors increased the number of charges against Ariel Castro and he now faces 329 indicted counts.

Ariel Castro was indicted on 139 counts of rape, 177 counts of kidnapping, seven counts of gross se***l imposition, three counts of felonious assault and one count of possession of criminal tools.

The indictment alleges Castro held the women captive, sometimes chaining them to a pole in a basement, to a bedroom heater or inside a van.

It says one of the women tried to escape and he assaulted her with a vacuum cord around her neck.

The indictment covers the period from August 2002, when the first of the women, Michelle Knight, disappeared, to February 2007.

Top 7 Celebrity Meltdowns

Celebrities live their lives under such a carefully examined microscope. While their fame is notorious and their faces are recognizable, there is an ugly side that the public loves to expose. They often have very public meltdowns and cameras capture every riveting second of it. They are meant to be a major source of entertainment, and it doesn’t make a difference if their reputation is ruined in the process. Take a look at some of top celebrity meltdowns of recent time.

Charlie Sheen

It is hard to pinpoint the exact number of meltdowns that Charlie Sheen has had during his career. One of them resulting him in getting kicked off Two and a Half Men. If that isn’t bad enough, he is now having major issues with one of his co-workers on his new show, Anger Management. At this point, it is only a matter of time before his next major meltdown.

Lindsay Lohan

When Lindsay melts down, it is front page news. This time, it is all about rehab. She switches rehab facilities faster than the paparazzi can snap those out of rehab pictures. Most of her pictures are pretty funny, especially the ones taken right before she enters rehab.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber and cars are a volatile mix. From racing through his neighborhood to now running over a man in his car, he seriously has issues behind the wheel. Fortunately for him, there were no serious injuries. But, it is only a matter of time before he finds his driver’s license revoked. Oh, he still hasn’t retrieved his monkey from Germany.

Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes has released her weirdness on Twitter. She has tweeted jailhouse photos, nude photos and gotten into some Twitter wars with other actors. The tarnish on her good girl image is all due to her irrational tweeting.

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne stepped into controversy big time when he stomped all over the American flag in his latest music video. His is excuse is that he didn’t mean it. But this is one big insult that the veterans of this country won’t forget any time soon.

Chris Brown

Chris Brown’s activities have expanded beyond the assault of Rihanna. He is now in the midst of some Twitter wars with other artists. His behavior has also been rather unpredictable, as he has also gotten into scuffles with other celebrities at night clubs. His once held “good guy” image is far in his review mirror and a new persona has emerged in the eyes of fans.

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson had a serious meltdown during a project. The entire episode was recorded on film and posted. Included in the video are profane words, a rant against Jews, and a tirade against his ex. He later apologized but the rant still lives on.

These are some of the biggest celebrity meltdowns. The stress of being famous definitely brings out the worst in these celebrities. While their actions may eventually be forgiven, their meltdowns will live forever.

HIV Breakthrough: Two patients taken off their HIV drugs after bone-marrow transplants

A doctors’ report showed that two patients have been taken off their HIV drugs after bone-marrow transplants seemed to clear the virus from their bodies.

One of the patients has spent nearly four months without taking medication with no sign of the virus returning.

The team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in the US, caution that it is far too soon to talk about a cure as the virus could return at any point.

The findings were presented at the International AIDS Society Conference.

It is difficult to get rid of an HIV infection because it hides inside human DNA, forming untouchable “reservoirs” in body.

Anti-retroviral drugs keep the virus in check within the bloodstream – but when the drugs stop, the virus comes back.

The two men, who have not been identified, had lived with HIV for about 30 years.

They both developed a cancer, lymphoma, which required a bone-marrow transplant.

Bone marrow is where new blood cells are made and it is thought to be a major reservoir for HIV.

After the transplant, there was no detectable HIV in the blood for two years in one patient and four in the other.

The pair came off their anti-retroviral drugs earlier this year.

One has gone 15 weeks, and the other seven, since stopping treatment, and no signs of the virus have been detected so far.

Dr. Timothy J. Henrich said the results were exciting. But he added: “We have not demonstrated cure, we’re going to need longer follow-up.

“What we can say is if the virus does stay away for a year or even two years after we stopped the treatment, that the chances of the virus rebounding are going to be extremely low.

“It’s much too early at this point to use the C-word [cure].”

It is thought that the transplanted bone marrow was initially protected from infection by the course of anti-retrovirals. Meanwhile the transplant also attacked the remaining bone marrow, which was harboring the virus.

However Dr. Timothy J. Henrich cautioned that the virus could be still be hiding inside brain tissue or the gastrointestinal track.

“If [the] virus does return, it would suggest that these other sites are an important reservoir of infectious virus and new approaches to measuring the reservoir at relevant sites will be needed to guide the development of HIV curative strategies,” he said.

Timothy Brown, also known as the “Berlin patient” is thought to be the first person cured of AIDS. He had a bone marrow transplant from a rare donor who was resistant to HIV.

The two US cases both received bone marrow from normal donors.

There was also a report of an HIV cure in a baby born in Mississippi, US. She was treated with anti-retroviral drugs at birth so it is thought the virus was cleared from the body before reservoirs were established.

It is far too early to call this a cure for HIV. And even if it was a cure, it wouldn’t be a very good one.

It is very expensive and often leads to “graft-v-host” disease. There is a 15-20% mortality rate within the first few years after the transplant.

This occurs when new immune cells produced by the graft treat the rest of the body as foreign and attack it.

The two patients in this study have replaced their regimen of anti-retroviral drugs, with those to suppress the immune system.

The procedure was carried out in these patients only because they had cancer that needed to be treated.

The real value of this research for the majority of people with HIV will come from a deeper understanding of the virus and HIV reservoirs.

Miley Cyrus on Bahamas holiday without Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus insists she is still engaged to Liam Hemsworth, but she continues to spark rumors that their relationship is on the rocks after reportedly jetting off to the Bahamas for a holiday without her fiancé.

Twitter user Brittainy Trevathan snapped Miley Cyrus at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge in Hope Town, on the Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas on Saturday, according to Radaronline.com.

Miley Cyrus, 20, was make-up free and dressed down, apparently with “a guy named Stephen and a girl”.

Other Twitter users confirmed that Miley Cyrus rented a cottage in the tropical paradise, but more for a place to relax than rage.

Miley Cyrus had enough action for a while at the iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party at the Fontainbeau in Miami Beach last week.

She’s been heavily promoting her latest single We Can’t Stop.

During an interview on the SiriusXM Studios on Thursday, Miley Cyrus spoke about how excited she was about beating Justin Bieber’s VEVO record with her new single, thanking her fans for their support.

“They’re the ones that are getting [my We Can’t Stop music video] to be at 33 million views,” she said.

“Haters are going to hate, but haters are also going to click on your YouTube video to watch it, so I don’t really care. You helped me break the record. And if you were watching just to hate on me, now I hold the record, so I win.”

Miley Cyrus also revealed that the video clip for her new song is based on her life.

“The video is based on true events,” she said.

“Things that have happened to me in the past.”

She also gushed about her relationship status with Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, which has long been the fodder of tabloid headlines, saying that their engagement was definitely still on.

“I’m wearing a ring, so. . .” she mused.

But the last time Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were last spotted together was on June 17, while on a date at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood to see Man Of Steel.

Meanwhile, Liam Hemsworth has been filming his latest feature Cut Bank in Edmonton, Canada, away from Miley Cyrus.

Michelle Obama and Laura Bush complain about how the White House can feel like a prison

First Ladies Michelle Obama and Laura Bush attended the African First Ladies Summit in Tanzania where they complained about how the White House can feel like a prison.

“There are prison elements to it. But it’s a really nice prison,” Michelle Obama said at the Tuesday panel in Tanzania.

Her predecessor, Laura Bush, then added that the chef is an addition unlike other prisons, and Michelle Obama brought it back to the point, saying: “You can’t complain.  But there is definitely elements that are confining.”

The conversation came up as Michelle Obama and Laura Bush were interviewed by an American journalist about how African first ladies can take a public stand and use their spotlight for good.

The Democrat and Republican said that they both grow frustrated at how the public focuses on trivial aspects of their appearance- like Michelle Obama’s famous bangs- rather than the causes that are close to their heart.

“We take our bangs and we stand in front of important things that the world needs to see. And eventually, people stop looking at the bangs and they start looking at what we’re standing in front of,” Michelle Obama said.

Laura Bush, whose hairstyle has largely stayed the same since she and her husband first entered the White House in 2000, added: “Our daughter, Barbara, cut bangs at the same time Michelle did. They commiserated.”

“I was doing what Barbara was doing. I was just following her lead,” Michelle Obama joked.

The Tuesday panel was a very public display of mutual affection between the two first ladies, moderated by journalist Cokie Roberts- who works for ABC but was also appointed onto President George W. Bush’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Michelle Obama said that she made a point of spending some time with Laura Bush during their overlapping trips to Africa because: “I like this woman.”

“It’s sort of a club, a sorority, I guess,” Laura Bush said.

Michelle Obama praised Laura Bush and her staff for helping with their transition into the White House, but both women complained about the steep learning curve they faced.

“Nothing prepares you for this role. I mean, it is so startling that the transition of power in the United States happens so quickly that you don’t have access to the house until the President takes the oath of office,” Michelle Obama said.

“I remember walking into that house and I didn’t even know where the bathrooms were. But I had to get ready for a ball. It was like, and I’ve got to look nice? It’s like, what door is this, and you’re opening up all these doors, and you can’t find your toothpaste, you don’t know where your kids are.”

Obamacare employer mandate delayed until 2015 because of 2014 midterm elections?

The Obama administration will not begin enforcing employer mandates in the Obamacare law until 2015 – one year later than originally planned.

Mark Mazur, the Assistant Treasury Secretary for Tax Policy, announced on the agency’s blog that the administration “will provide an additional year before the … mandatory employer and insurer reporting requirements begin”.

The blog post explained that the delay was intended to leave time to simplify reporting requirements and give companies time to adapt.

But an unnamed Treasury source said the extra year will give the White House an extra year to persuade health insurers to participate in the exchanges that make up the backbone of the Affordable Care Act.

The revised timetable, the source added, will also push back the final implementation of Obamacare’s penalties past the 2014 midterm elections, providing Republicans fewer chances to highlight the law’s potentially harmful effects on businesses’ bottom lines.

The Obama administration’s new schedule means business won’t be penalized immediately for failing to enroll all their workers in health plans and report the results to the federal government, Bloomberg News was first to report.

The Obama administration will not begin enforcing employer mandates in the Obamacare law until 2015
The Obama administration will not begin enforcing employer mandates in the Obamacare law until 2015

The Affordable Care Act includes financial penalties on companies that fail to comply if they employ 50 or more people. The Treasury Department is involved because the Internal Revenue Service, a Treasury sub-agency, will be tasked with enforcing the law and assessing those penalties.

“Obamacare is a flawed law,” said Republican National Committee Deputy Press Secretary Raffi Williams.

“It has been from day one and continues to be one now.”

“This latest announcement is just another sign that the president and his administration are afraid of the havoc that this imperfect law will wreak on everyday Americans.”

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chair Darrell Issa, a California Republican, piled on Tuesday evening, drawing attention to the GOP’s efforts to repeal the Obamacare law in its entirety.

“The House has repeatedly voted to repeal Obamacare because it will not work and is bad public policy,” Darrell Issa said in a statement.

“The President has delayed a critical component of the Affordable Care Act because it is absolutely unaffordable for American job creators and workers. It is unclear that he has the authority to do this without Congress.”

“This is another in a string of extra legal actions taken by his Administration to mask the horrible impact his law will have on the economy and health care in the United States.”

Politico noted that Tuesday’s pivot from the White House will not affect the so-called “individual mandate”, which will require most Americans to be insured. It also won’t delay the scheduled October rollout of health care marketplaces, called exchanges, set up to help taxpayers and companies find coverage that satisfies the Obamacare law.

The administration has been on a full-court press in California, Texas and Florida, enlisting the help of Hispanic advocacy groups and Spanish-language media networks to encourage enrollment in advance of the autumn start date.

The Treasury Department said it expects to publish regulatory rules in one week that will formalize the new 2015 enforcement deadline for companies.

Kim Kardashian threatens to call police on Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian

In the latest episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, filmed when Kim Kardashian was still pregnant, she is seen losing it at mother Kris Jenner and sister Khloe who cause chaos after a drunken night out, and even threatens to call the cops.

Clearly trying to get some well earned rest, Kim Kardashian, 32, is seen with an almighty face of thunder as Kris and Khloe come crashing back home having enjoyed a few too many tequila shots.

The storyline of the episode starts with Khloe Kardashian complaining that she feels left out by sisters Kim and Kourtney.

“I don’t like being ignored by you two,” Khloe Kardashian reveals in the clip.

As ever, the meddling matriach Kris Jenner comes to the rescue but ends up doing more harm than good to repair relations between the sisters.

“Khloe’s been feeling a little left out lately so I’m going to show her a really fun night out on the town,” Kris Jenner says.

It’s not long before the pair are seen at a Mexican bar downing shots of tequila as Khloe Kardashian drowns her sorrows.

Mischievous Kris Jenner then decides to play an alcohol-fuelled prank on her family, and they arrive home and begin vandalizing the garden.

Acting like a pair of sorority girls gone wild, Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian are seen throwing rolls of toilet paper over the trees.

Not seeing the funny side, Kim Kardashian tells them: “I am so p****d.”

Adding the threat: “If I wanted to call the cops on you guys I could.”

Kim Kardashian , who gave birth to baby daughter North West on June 15, will hopefully be now afforded some rest and peace from her mother and sister.

Her boyfriend Kanye West, 36, was recently seen at the Mailbu RED afterparty for the BET Awards on Sunday, his first party appearance since the birth.

Keeping Up With the Kardashians airs this Sunday on E! at 9/8c.

Edward Snowden suspicion diverts Bolivia’s President Evo Morales plane

The plane of Bolivia’s President Evo Morales plane on Moscow airport had to be diverted to Austria amid suspicion that US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden was on board, the Bolivian foreign minister has said.

Officials in both Austria and Bolivia said Edward Snowden was not on the plane.

France and Portugal reportedly refused to allow the Moscow-Bolivia flight to cross their airspace.

Edward Snowden is reportedly seeking asylum in Bolivia and 20 other countries to avoid extradition to the US.

Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca told reporters on Tuesday that France and Portugal had closed their airspace over the “huge lie” that Edward Snowden, 30, was on board.

“We don’t know who invented this lie, but we want to denounce to the international community this injustice with the plane of President Evo Morales,” he said.

Austrian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Schallenberg said Edward Snowden was not on board the Bolivian leader’s aircraft.

The Bolivian defense minister, also on the flight, pilloried the US after the unscheduled landing.

“This is a hostile act by the United States state department which has used various European governments,” Ruben Saavedra said.

The plane of Bolivia’s President Evo Morales plane had to be diverted to Austria amid suspicion that Edward Snowden was on board
The plane of Bolivia’s President Evo Morales plane had to be diverted to Austria amid suspicion that Edward Snowden was on board

The Falcon aircraft was reportedly allowed to refuel in Spain before the jet went on to Vienna. President Evo Morales was said to be at the airport in Vienna discussing his return route to Bolivia early on Wednesday.

French officials said they could not confirm whether they had denied permission for President Evo Morales’ plane to fly over their territory. Portuguese officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Bolivian president had been on a visit to Moscow, where Edward Snowden, a former CIA contractor, has reportedly been holed up in an airport transit area since arriving from Hong Kong on June 23.

President Evo Morales told Russian television that Bolivia had not yet received an application from Edward Snowden, however, his request, if sent, would be considered.

“Bolivia is ready to accept people who disclose espionage if one can call it this way,” he said.

President Evo Morales and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro had been in Moscow for a meeting of gas-exporting countries.

Nicolas Maduro said he had not formally received an asylum request, but expressed support for Edward Snowden, saying he “deserves the world’s protection” from the United States.

“Why are they persecuting him? What has he done? Did he launch a missile and kill someone? Did he rig a bomb and kill someone? No. He is preventing war,” he told Reuters news agency.

Edward Snowden withdrew his application to Russia after President Vladimir Putin said he could stay only on condition that he stopped damaging Russia’s “American partners” with his leaks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

He is wanted by the US on charges of leaking secrets he gathered while working as a contractor for the National Security Agency (NSA), America’s electronic spying agency.

On Tuesday, National Intelligence Director James Clapper apologized for telling Congress in March that the NSA did not have a policy of gathering data on millions of Americans.

He said in a letter to Dianne Feinstein, head of the Senate intelligence committee, that his answer had been “clearly erroneous”.

The leaking of thousands of classified intelligence documents prompted revelations that the US has been systematically seizing vast amounts of phone and web data.

WikiLeaks, which says it is advising Edward Snowden, said most of his asylum requests had been handed to the Russian consulate at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport late on Sunday for delivery to the relevant embassies in the capital.

Edward Snowden asylum requests:

  • Rejected: Austria, Brazil, Finland, India, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland
  • Withdrawn: Russia
  • Pending: Bolivia, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Nicaragua
  • Unconfirmed: France, Venezuela
